The Humble Man Sits Still - Vayera #4 5787

Welcome to the Daily Parts, a piece of small piece of the Parts, a big piece of your day. This is Laby Burnham, a partner's Detroit. Let's learn something meaningful in five minutes or less. In this week's Torah portion, we learn about the source for a very important law in Jewish Halacha. The Halacha is that a person is supposed to have what's called a Muckum Kavua, a steady place where they dive in. So that means that when you go to Shold, you shouldn't be sometimes diving in the front, sometimes diving in the back, sometimes diving next to this guy, sometimes diving next to that guy. You should always dive in the very same spot, of course, if a guest is there and they take your spot by mistake, let it be. That's okay. But otherwise, you should have the same spot. And even if you're diving at home for whatever reason, you should have a specific place in your home where you dive in. You should have a set place for that. Where do we learn this from? Because we know that Avram went and prayed to Hashem and tried to save the cities of Saddam and Amuro from being destroyed. In the end, they were destroyed, but we know that Avram went back the next day to dive in there again. And the language in the Torah, this is going to be found in chapter 19 verse 27 by Yashkim Avrambabokar. And Avramb got up in the morning, Alamakomashir, Amacham, Espinashem, to the same place we had stood there. And the face of Hashem, diving, praying the previous day, he went back the same day. Now, the Talmud says, "Entracked it, brough us, page 6." "Anybody who sets a specific place for their prayer, the God of Avramb will be in his help and his aid." Hashem, the God of Avramb, because Avramb, so we learn it from, so the God of Avramb will help him out. And when he dies, they will say about him, "Whoa, we lost an un of a humble person. Whoa, we lost a righteous person. Whoa, we lost me Talmud of Shl'Avrambavino, a student of Avrambavino." Because we see that Avramb also set a place for diving. Now, why specifically do we say that he's a humble person? I can understand you say he's a righteous person because he prays in the proper way. I can understand you say he's a student of Avrambavino because we learn the idea of standing in the same place from Avramb. But why is he considered a humble person specifically? So the Heart-Svi, which is a great book written by Rabbi Tsvi, Paisach Frank, who was born in Kubna, in Lithuania, made his way to Aritystral to Israel and he studied under the Great River of Shmul Saland. And he became the chief Rabbi of Jerusalem from the years 1936 until his death in the year 1960, which obviously saw a lot of turmoil. He says something fascinating. He says, "When you're an arrogant person, you constantly get into fights with people." Everybody, because this guy's not giving you your space. He's not giving you respect. And he said something wrong and he disagreed with you and you get into fights because you're an arrogant person. You can never take any affront, any perceived slight or offence. You're constantly getting into fights with people. So what ends up happening? You're constantly moving around the show. First, you're standing on the left hand side of the show. But then you get into big argument with Mr. Goldberg. So I'm moving away from him. And then you go to the right side of the show and then you get into fight with Mr. Goldstein over there. Because you're always getting into fights with people. I'm not going to stand next to him. You go to the back of the show and you're going to fight with this guy. You go to the front of the show and you're going to fight with the rabbi. You're constantly moving around because you can't live with people when you're an arrogant person. There's not enough room for anybody else in your vicinity. He says, "Rabbi, so he pays off rank. When a person is humble, they're able to set one place." And that's where they pray. It doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the guy next to you, maybe he's making extra noises. Maybe he blows his nose in a way that's not so awesome. He coughs or he has some kind of whatever weird quibble. He leaves a bunch of tissues out on the table and it bothers you when you see it. But if you're a humble person, you could handle other people's little foibles. And you could stay rooted in your place. Because your place of prayer is much more important than the little things that people are doing around you. But when you're an arrogant person, everything bothers you. Everything gets under your skin. Everything's in a front to you and you're constantly on the move. So let's be humble. Let's not let little things that people do bother us as we like to say, don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff. Thank you.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. The Torah teaches that one should have a fixed, steady place for prayer, known as a Muckum Kavua, to maintain consistency and focus.
  2. This practice is derived from Avram’s return to the same spot the next day after praying, as described in Genesis 19:27.
  3. The Talmud states that someone who establishes a fixed prayer place is blessed and will be remembered as a humble and righteous person.
  4. Rabbi Tsvi Pesach Frank explains that humility allows a person to remain rooted in one place despite minor disturbances from others.
  5. Arrogant individuals are constantly moved by conflicts, leading them to shift positions frequently due to perceived slights.
  6. Humility enables one to accept minor inconveniences and prioritize spiritual practice over petty distractions.
  7. The fixed prayer place reflects inner stability and peace, contrasting with the restlessness of the arrogant.
  8. The lesson emphasizes that true devotion comes from inner humility, not from reacting to external disruptions.

FAQs
