Now, you know, there's an intricate link between our gut and brain, and it plays a crucial role, this link in our overall health and well-being. Now, often referred to as the second brain, that gut significantly influences our mood, behavior, and hormonal balance. Now, understanding this connection, can help us take better care of our digestive health, which in turn can enhance mental clarity, emotional stability, and hormonal harmony. Now, the gut brain connection, or, known as the gut brain access, is a bi-directional communication system, that links the emotional and cognitive centers of the brain, with the digestive system. This connection is facilitated by different pathways, including the vagus nerve, the immune system, and the gut microbiome. Now, the gut microbiome is composed of trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms, and it plays a pivotal role in this communication network. So, when your gut is healthy, it produces neurotransmitters and other chemical messengers that positively impact brain function and mood. Conversely, an unhealthy gut can lead to inflammation, and it imbalances that contribute to mood disorders, anxiety, and hormonal disruption. The gut microbiome interacts with the immune system, helping to regulate immune responses and reduce inflammation. Now a balanced immune response is crucial for preventing chronic inflammation, which as I mentioned, chronic inflammation negatively impacts both the gut and brain health. Now what about the metabolism hormones by your gut? Well, gut bacteria are involved in the metabolism hormones such as estrogen. And so by metabolizing these hormones, gut bacteria can help maintain hormonal balance and influence various body functions, including mood, and even other things like reproductive health. Protection of the gut barrier is very, very important for healthy gut brain access. A healthy gut microbiome supports the integrity of the gut lining, preventing leaky gut syndrome or increased intestinal permeability. A compromised gut barrier can slow harmful substances from entering the bloodstream, which will trigger a systemic inflammatory and potentially affecting your brain health. So let's talk about how digestive health affects mood, neurotransmitter production, a little more specifically. Let's start with serotonin. As I mentioned, serotonin is a very key neurotransmitter. Influences are mood or appetite and are sleep. Now about 90% of the body serotonin is actually synthesized in the gut, where it regulates intestinal movements and influences the gut brain communication pathway. Now serotonin is often referred to as the feel good neurotransmitter because of its role in promoting feelings of well-being and happiness. And so crucial neurotransmitter helps regulate anxiety and promote relaxation. Now certain gut bacteria involved in the production of GABA, which highlights the role of the gut microbiome in mental health. GABA functions to be an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it reduces the neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. Adequate levels of GABA help maintain a common balanced mood. And imbalance in gut bacteria can disrupt GABA production, leading to an increased anxiety and stress level. Now let's talk a bit more about what I mentioned earlier, inflammation and mood disorders. Poor gut health can lead to chronic inflammation, which has a direct impact on brain function and mental health. The gut and brain communicate through the immune system. And when the gut is inflamed, it releases pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemicals, which get into the bloodstream. Now these chemicals or cytokines can travel to the brain causing neuro-inflammation and altering brain function. So chronic inflammation has been linked to the development of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. So by maintaining a healthy gut, it is possible to reduce systemic inflammation and support better mental health. Now let's talk about the all important blood brain barrier. The blood brain barriers a protective membrane that prevents harmful substances from entering the brain. However, chronic inflammation, which can also, and often does originate from the gut, can compromise the integrity of the blood brain barrier making it more permeable.
