I'm Jill Winterstein, aka Spirit Jotter. And today I'm super excited because we are kicking off a brand new series that I've wanted to do for a long time. And that's talking about the houses and astrology. And so if you've ever looked at your natal chart and wondered what all of those pie pieces were, this series is for you. On each of the following many episodes, I'm going to go through each of the houses. So one house per episode and I'll go through each of the 12 signs and what it means to have that house governed by each of those 12 signs. So we're going deep. This is going to give you a really practical foundation on your natal chart, on astrology and on the houses. So first of all, what are houses? So like I said, when you pull your natal chart, it will look like a pie. And there are 12 pieces of that pie and those pieces are houses. And so planets are pieces of your personality. And the signs theme those pieces are parts of your personality. The houses are areas of your life that these personality pieces show up in. And so our houses are where the energy happens. So say you have a sun sign in Pisces in your 11th house. Your 11th house is where that sun and Pisces energy is going to show up the most in that area of your life governed by that house. And so houses are really, really important. And before I go any further, just know that it's okay to have empty houses in your chart. I get this question all the time. What are houses and my houses are empty? My six houses empty. Does that mean I still have service in my life? Do I have gifts in my life? Six houses all about gifts and services and offerings? Yes. You still have that area of your life, even if that house is empty. It's still important for you and it's still important to know about it because at some point the moon, the sun, a planet is going to transit that house and it's going to amplify the energy of that house for you even if you don't have natal placements there. So empty houses are okay. And I even will go further to say they can actually show us uncomplicated areas of our life. If we see a lot of planets, a lot of placements in a house, there usually means there's some complication. There's some layers to dig through. There might even be some drama to understand unravel. But if you have an empty house, it's still there. You still have that area of your life. Planets will still transit it. They'll still impact that area of your life. And you might not have as much complication or drama in that area of your life compared to a house that is full of placements and therefore full of pieces of your personality. So let's get started with the first house. The first house in astrology is our house of identity. So this house starts our chart. And it begins with our ascendant or rising sign. So this is the rising sign that was coming up on the horizon when you were born. And this is why it can be important to know your birth date because that determines your rising sign and determines your first house and it kicks off your entire chart. So if you don't know your exact birth time, that's okay, but just know that you may not fully understand where all of your houses are placed or really what zodiac signs are theming each of your house because that precision comes from knowing your time of birth. So that's why it's important and that's why we always ask astrology your time of birth. You still can get a lot out of your birth chart if you don't know your birth time. But to get the most out of it, we want to plug in that birth time so that we know our rising sign and we understand our first house. And so if your areas rising, the areas will begin your chart and it will theme your first house. So let's talk about what that means. We're going to go through each of the zodiac signs and what it means to have them as your rising and governing your first house of identity. And like I said, houses are where these energies show up so the energies in your first house are going to show up in your identity, how you walk into a room, how you're perceived in that room, how you define yourself, how you label yourself even, how you reinvent yourself when those labels don't fit anymore. That's all first house. It's who you are. Think of it as your I am statement house. So what does it mean to have areas rising in this house to have it governed by areas. It means you walk into a room with fire with action with determination. And even if you have a cold felt people can feel your intensity, even if you have a placey sun, even if you have a cancer moon, even if you have softness behind that rising sign, people will meet that areas part of you first. And you'll be ruled by Mars, which is the ruler of areas. So your chart ruler will be Mars and you'll want to find where Mars is in your chart what house it's in and what sign it's in as well because that's going to be one of the driving engines of your chart. Mars is all about passion. It's about motivation. It's about ambition. And so part of your identity is going to be ambition. It's going to be about showing your passions to everybody else as part of who you are. You're going to want to be known by your passions and you're also going to have a lot of energy. You're going to be known as the person who takes action when they need to. This is classic areas rising next up, Taurus rising. So when Taurus governs the first house, this is quite different than areas. Taurus is slow, grounded, stable. And so when Taurus rising walks into the room, people feel a sense of peace. And they may feel their energy slow down. Taurus rising might seem like they're stubborn or they move slowly or they're fixed, but really they're very thorough. They're grounded. They're in the moment. They're not worried about the future or the past. And that's part of their identity. They're seen as very present people who are here to help bring presence to everybody around them. So this isn't about rushing to the next thing or over talking or over sharing. This is about sitting down and having quality conversations with someone. Conversations that might help bring out truth that might bring out alignment through the gift of sheer presence. Taurus rising are ruled by Venus. So their chart ruler is Venus, the ruling sign of Taurus. So they're going to want to know where Venus is in their chart and beauty is going to be very important to them, not in a superficial way, but in an aesthetically pleasing way. So they need to have a beautiful container in their home. They need to be surrounded by things that help them feel their own inner beauty so they can bring that out. This is part of their life. identity. They're known as the people who help create containers that can hold and express beauty. So if you're a tar, tar is rising, look around and ask yourself if the color of your walls and the furniture you're sitting on bring you comfort. Are they that container you need to bring your gift of pure presence inward to your identity and outward to the people who need it. Next up, Gemini Rising, where Gemini governs the first house. Gemini Rising people often come off as young and playful. They like to talk, they communicate a lot. They have no issues, the small talk, and usually are the life of the party. They're the social butterflies out there. This is part of their identity. People might even describe a Gemini Rising as somebody who socializes with ease who can fit in in any situation who knows how to talk to anyone from any variation of life. They're ruled by Mercury. So Mercury is their chart ruler. Mercury is all about communication. So Gemini Rising, they may be writers, they may be great communicators, they may be speakers. This is part of who they are. They are known for how they communicate. They also are known for their ability to draw in and understand and integrate information quickly. Their minds move fast, and they're able to open up their minds to different perspectives. And they might even be asked about this often from the people around them to see different sides or different viewpoints. Because like I said, that's part of their identity. Next up, Cancer Rising. Cancer governing the first house. So Cancer is softer than Gemini, softer than Aries. And that comes through immediately when people meet you. When you step into a room, you bring a nurturing presence. Everybody feels comforted by you. And they might even ask you to hold their emotions. You might even have people coming up and oversharing things with you because they can immediately sense your ability to nurture and hold emotional depth. The chart ruler here is the moon. And the moon is our emotions. So everything in your world is driven by your emotions. Your emotions are the engine of your chart and the engine of your life. No matter what you're doing, you're going to put your emotion into it. You're going to feel it. And you're going to be known as the person who can do that. You're going to be known as an emotional and an intuitive person. It's part of your identity. And it's part of your path to really understand how emotions and feeling them and expressing them can open the pathway to your intuition, that intuition that will lead you to your truest self. So if you're a cancer rising, ask yourself, how can you hold your emotions in a way that you can integrate them and have them be fuel for your intuition so that that becomes part of the driving force of your identity and how you show up in the world. Next, we have Leo Rising, Leo governing the first house. Leo Rising people were born to shine. They step into a room and they immediately light it up. People gravitate towards them. There's a natural magnetic quality to them and everyone feels it. They glow. They feel warm and people are warmed by their presence. They are attracted to them in the best way possible. With the sun rolling their chart, every aspect of their chart, the pieces, the planets shine brightly. They're here to own their power and take up the space they deserve. And everybody knows it. And it's not that Leo Rising are here to be the center of attention. They're here to shine their brightest and teach others how to do that. It's part of their identity. We can see Leo Rising and so many people that lead lead us through their thoughts, lead us through their ability to step on stage, lead us through their ability to speak their mind, lead us through their ability to take up space. It becomes who they are. So if you're Leo Rising, ask yourself, how are you taking up the space you deserve and owning your power in a way that inspires others to do the same? Next up, Virgo Rising. So Virgo governing the first house. Virgo Rising people, and they step into a room. They are seen as practical, dependable, and maybe a little critical. And that's actually just their discernment. Virgo Rising are very discerning. They understand what works and what doesn't immediately. And it's part of their identity and people feel this. So sometimes people can feel uncomfortable around Virgo Rising people because they know they're seen in their full complexity. And it's not that Virgo Rising is judging them. They're actually judging themselves. The Virgo Rising is just acting as a mirror for their own insecurities. Virgo Rising though are ruled by Mercury. So Mercury is the chart ruler, much like Gemini Rising. But with Virgo, it goes deep. So Gemini Rising Mercury is about breath. But with Virgo, it's about depth. And they have sharp minds that they're really known for. They're very detailed oriented. And they can spot an error a mile away. And they can be known for that. People can say, oh, hey, send this project over to so and so. They're a Virgo Rising. They may not even know they're Virgo Rising. They'll find any typos or any errors immediately because again, they have that power of discernment, not judgment, but discernment. And so it's really important to distinguish those two things. So it's not that Virgo Rising are judging themselves or judging anyone else. They're just can see the details. Some of the subtler things that others miss. And they're known for that. So if you're a Virgo Rising, ask yourself how you can use your power of discernment to help you heal because Virgo is the sign of the healer and to help others heal. So if you have Libra Rising, when you walk into a room, people immediately feel at ease in your presence. You bring a sense of peace and balance with you everywhere you go. You might even be described as charming, or you may have a calming voice, or something about you is calming to people. They'll place it within your identity. So you get to be known as having this calming aspect as part of who you are. Venus is your chart ruler, and so art and aesthetics are really important to you. So are relationships. It's important to feel balance as well in your relationships. And for you, it's also important to put the people at ease around you in your relationships, which means you might end up people pleasing or feeling guilty at times. And it's really important for you to notice that and step back and know that you can put yourself first. And that true balance in any relationship, including the relationship with yourself, really requires saying no and having boundaries and holding those boundaries without guilt. Overall, though, your identity is all about balance and creating balance in a way that feels good to you and to everyone around you. Moving on to Scorpio Rising, where Scorpio rules the first house. So if you have Scorpio Rising, when you walk into a room, your intensity is immediately felt. Some people may even feel scared of you. They may feel confronted by your energy, or they may run up to you and tell you their deepest, darkest secrets. Your depth is felt. You have both Mars, which is the traditional ruler of Scorpio, and Pluto, the planet of transformation, ruling your chart. And so people feel this transformation, and it's part of your identity. You're an alchemist and everyone around you knows it. And so you're here to transform and to help others transform. And some of this may be a learning process. It may take you a lifetime to understand your power to take one energy and transform it into others. It may take your whole life to understand what to tell people, and they do run up to you and tell you their secrets from their past. And it may also take a lifetime to help you communicate that your depth and your ability to see people is not confrontational. You're here to actually help and heal people. But your energy at first, because you see people so deeply, can feel confrontational to others, because they're not willing to see themselves yet. You act as a very deep mirror for everyone else, and you need people in your life to be able to meet you at that depth. And because you see people so clearly, you can have a hard time trusting others. And that also can get infused into your identity. And so if you're a Scorpio rising, take a risk, and ask yourself if there's somebody in your life, you might not be trusting, because it just feels too vulnerable and too scary, because you can see things all too well. Overall though, you have a strong gift and a strong presence to help yourself and the people around you change in any way. They are you desire. Sagittarius rising. So Sagittarius rolling the first house, you're the life of the party. You walk in and the entire room lights up. Your energy is electric and everybody can feel it. And that becomes part of who you are. You have a great sense of humor, and everyone knows it. They immediately feel at ease around you. Your whole chart is ruled by Jupiter, which is the planet of growth and expansion. So you're here to expand ideas, to expand containers. Everything about you is about expansion. And again, that's felt by everyone you meet. And that becomes part of your identity. You also are very, very honest and truthful, almost to a fault. You don't mean your words, and sometimes people can perceive them in the wrong way. You can lighten it a little bit with your sense of humor, though. And always remember that. If you deliver a brutal truth and somebody has a shocked look on their face, just lighten it a bit with a joke. And that will bring your lightness and your positivity and optimism back into the conversation. And just know that not everybody is ready and willing to hear the truth about themselves. The truth that you can see, and you see everything in a positive light, but not everyone else does. Know that that's part of your gift to find the higher meaning and positivity in any situation. But that can take years and a lifetime for others to really understand. So if you're sadderizing, ask yourself, how am I lighting up this room right now? Capricorn Rising, Capricorn ruling the first house. If you have Capricorn Rising, when you enter a room, you're immediately perceived as a responsible person. Maybe somebody who's serious, who's mature, who's wise beyond their years. You carry this energy of discipline that people can depend on you. You're known for your dependability. Your chart ruler is Saturn, and Saturn is the planet of responsibility. And you bring this energy of responsibility and commitment to every piece of your life. You're the person that people trust. They may trust you with some things that they won't trust anyone else with. Because, like I said, your dependability is part of your identity. I will say a lot of Capricorn Rising's feel like they grew up too fast. So they take on this responsibility and seriousness at an early age. Maybe they make some serious commitments at an early age. And then later wonder why maybe they feel like they missed out on some of their youth because they're so serious committed to something. The good news is that they tend to age in the reverse. So as Capricorn Rising's get older, their life actually becomes easier and full of less commitments that feel hard or challenging. And so if you're a young Capricorn Rising, know that it's going to get easier and it's going to feel like you have more flow in your later years. The not everything has to be so structured and so disciplined. And allow yourself to have some fun. Shake it off. Forget about the commitments for a weekend and enjoy life. And that will bring so much energy to you. But also know that you're the one that people trust. It's part of who you are. So embrace it. Aquarius Rising with Aquarius ruling the first house. The Aquarius Rising, your identity is tied up with your ability to think out of the box, to innovate, to disrupt. You may even shake up paradigms. Everybody feels this about you. They feel your electric nature. When you walk into a room, people turn and look. They know that somebody unique and unusual has entered the room and everybody is curious. At times it might feel like you're the center of attention when you don't want to be because everybody can perceive that you know something that others don't. And so this is part of your identity. This is part of who you're known to be is this unique thinker. This is somebody who brings fresh ideas to the table that no one else can think about. You have Saturn as the traditional ruler of your chart. And Uranus as the modern ruler of your chart. So there's the interesting mix of discipline from Saturn. And then that disruptive rebellious nature of Uranus. So you may follow the rules and then decide you're going to break them and show everybody else a new way of being that just rubs the status quo. You're also known for somebody who embraces different forms of technology and can even show others how to use them. That's that Uranus aspect. It lights up your chart and electrifies everything you do. And helps you really think about the future. You're known as somebody who can envision the way we'll live 10, 20, 30 years from now. And people trust your visions. So lean into them. If you're an Aquarius rising, ask yourself, what vision of the future is calling me? What vision of society do I believe in? And how can I share that with others? And lastly, we get to Pisces rising. Pisces ruling the first chart. With Pisces rising, you are immediately perceived as somebody who is soft, somebody who is healer, somebody who understands emotion and intuition, as somebody who's empathic. People feel held in your presence. And people people look to you for healing. They also look to you for creativity. It's part of your identity to create and to help heal others through that creative expression. Your chart is ruled by Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces and Jupiter, the traditional ruler of Pisces. And so Neptune has this dreamy quality about it, and you bring this dreamy quality into everything you do. You bring your ability to create beautiful visions and dreams into everything you do and as part of who you are, you're known to be a dreamer, you're known to bring this element of universal energy everywhere and into every room you walk in. When you walk into a room, people feel that ease in your presence. They may even let their guards down. You help dissolve boundaries. And therefore you can help merge people who might have differing viewpoints so that they can connect and understand that we're all connected in this world. You have a special magnetism about you that people are drawn to because they know you understand them. You immediately give off that sense of understanding and like you can really see people for who they truly are. So use this gift to your greatest ability and know it's part of who you truly are. And so there you have it, the first house, the house of the self, the house of identity, the house of how we define ourselves, the house of how we're perceived, the house of how we walk into a room and what is felt, right? That's all your first house. It's how you dawn on people, right? That's your rising sign. It's the first part of you that people meet before they meet your son's sign or your moon sign or anything else. They meet your first house. And this energy shows up in your identity over and over again. It's also how you reinvent yourself. And so if you want to change up who you are, how you're perceived, you look at your first house energy and you say, how can I use the energy of this sign to reinvent myself?
