The Dr. Alban Strategy: How to balance stability and risk in investments at Verdane
40m 2s
The transcription features a discussion on Verdain, a private equity firm, and the Dr. Alban strategy—a concept where a safe “dentist” fallback ensures minimum returns, while a “pop star” opportunity targets high gains. Eleanor and Cecilia explain their roles: Eleanor raises capital from global investors (pension funds, insurance companies, etc.), and Cecilia invests in companies driving digitalization and decarbonization. Verdain uses a flexible growth buyout model, focusing on profitable companies with over 20% organic growth, and stands out with a large in-house tech and operations team. The fundraising climate has been challenging, but Verdain has succeeded due to its niche, track record, and investor trust. In the current market, there is less competition for consumer assets, but quality companies still command high valuations. Stockholm has emerged as a private equity hub because of its talent pool, successful startups like Spotify and Klarna, and transparent data, making it attractive for global investors. Both speakers highlight the versatility of careers in private equity and investor relations, noting growing opportunities in the field. The conversation underscores the importance of balancing risk and return, leveraging local expertise, and adapting to market cycles.
I've heard about something called Dr. Alban's strategy. Is that something that you could expand upon? Yeah, and it's actually not a joke. It's a real thing that we actually talk about. So for the young listeners, Dr. Alban is a Swedish artist who trained as a dentist before pursuing his music career. The idea being that he would have a pretty good fallback while pursuing the more risky artistic path. And for an investment context, when we make a case, we make the base case. And the only thing you know for sure is that this will be wrong, right? The world will turn out differently. So in an uncertain world, you should build a baseline of certainty that will almost guarantee you a minimum return. So regardless of outcomes, you will land on your feet. That's the dentist. And then maybe, maybe, maybe, just maybe, we can get something that is really outsized. That's the pop star. Of course, our gravitas is really a 3x type of return. But we're trying to find that balance where we have a pretty good downside protection at the dentist and then you have the potential pop star outcome. Welcome to Careers and Finance, a podcast for students and young professionals, which aims to explore different careers within the finance industry. Our goal is to understand what it is really like to work in finance, making the industry accessible to everyone. And to help us do that and talk to us about their careers, we're joined by two of the team from Verdain. Eleanor, investor relations principal, and Cecilia, investment principal. It's a great pleasure to have you both here today, and we really appreciate you taking the time. You're both successful finance professionals who've had stellar careers. So I'm hoping we can tap into your knowledge and share some of your experience with our listeners and maybe even inspire some of them to follow in your footsteps. You're both very welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for having us. So you flew in from New York this morning. That's correct. I'm delighted to be here. Yeah, especially for this podcast. Absolutely. Impressive. Thank you. Has life in New York. For Verdain, who's been around for about two decades now, we have increasingly investors coming from all over the world. And in our last fund, about a quarter of our investors are actually based in the US. And we always want to be close to our investors and make sure that we have a good relationship and service to them. And that's why I am now based in New York, yes. Sounds good. Maybe we can start with just bigger picture, Verdain. How would you describe Verdain? So we're a lower mid-market fund based out of-- well, we have seven offices across Northern Europe, 9 billion as at the undermanagement. We focus on backing two mega trends. So digitalization and decarbonization. And within the digitalization is both B2C and B2B. And I'm covering the B2C or the consumer field. And we were founded 2003. What is that? 22 years ago, in Oslo, by our managing partner, who's still our CIO. So we've been around for a while. And if you want to back it us in, because obviously, there's different parts of our productivity. We focus on growth by out, which means that we're looking for profitable companies that we also see solid organic growth. It's typically north of 20% before any add-ons and M&A. And that's the bread and butter, what we do. Yeah. And the growth by out does that mean you would become a majority shareholder in the businesses that you buy typically, or how does that work? I like to think about our mandate. That's very flexible. So we can do both minority and majority positions. We can inject fresh capital into a business. We can buy out other shareholders. So it's very flexible. The key for us is that we want to make sure that we are able to do the value creation projects that we think will be really valuable for the company. And we look there for control, whether that's minority or majority, it doesn't really matter that much. The key is that we are able to use our in-house operations team to do all the things that we can contribute with to the companies. It's an increasingly competitive landscape growth by out or by out as a whole. Is there anything in particular you would say that differentiates for a day? I think one thing that I like to talk about with founders is our in-house tech-optim. So it's a team, I think, there are what is it? 40 people now. They are true specialists within their own field. So it could be marketing people. It could be tech. It could be sustainability. And they are basically experts on tap that our portfolio companies can use. I think that is something that sets us apart. I don't think any other European firm of our size really has that size of a team. And then I think it's our culture. I think it's the people that are working at Verdin and how we interact with founders, how we behave, and so on. Sounds good. Both of you do quite different things at Verdin, though. I guess there's a lot of crossover, but there's also differences. So maybe we can dive into the different roles that you're doing, Cecilia. What is it that you do at Verdin? So I'm an investment professional in our consumer team. And so basically, what I do is I try to find great companies to back and to invest in. And then I spend part of my time to work with the companies that we invest in. So it's sort of a double role. And then sometimes I spend time with Elinor on fundraising and sometimes I do podcasts like this. But that's basically what I do. And Elinor? I mean, if you want to take the super high level picture of what we do, I find the money that Cecilia has been. And then she returns it back to our investors and hopefully at a pretty decent profit. And that's the core. But I speak with all our investors. They are currently from 18 different countries. They are everything from public pension funds, insurance companies, family offices, and governments foundation. Anyone out there that is actively investing in alternative assets such as ourselves. And we have a solid long-term backing investor base with many of our investors have been with us almost since the start. But they're also increasingly new investors coming in from different parts of the world. And we want to make sure that they can follow what we do. We are custodian over their capital. And we want to do that in the most professional way that we can and be transparent on how things are going, what's going well, and if there are challenges, et cetera. What are the key things that those investors are looking for today when deciding to invest in a fund like Radein? It's a great question. And there's some things that are similar. And then there's many that are different from each other. But in short, they look at the team mostly. Because in reality, they do give us a blank pool of capital for Cecilia and our colleagues to find great companies to invest in. So team is a really important culture. And of course, look at track record. We have done 200 investments to date now or the 22 years. So they go through how is that performed? They also look at our strategy, both where we are a specialist firm within tech and tech and able companies. And if that's a good fit to their own portfolio and their diversification, that's always something they take into consideration. And then there's a number of different aspects around sustainability, around timing is always a question. And there's many things that play into it. Most think of us as a specialist northerian tech exposure. Yeah. And the fundraising climate over the last couple of years has been quite tough from what I understand. And you can see that by there are many funds out there who have actually been unable to raise capital over the last couple of years. That's not the case for Verdeing. So you haven't, in fact, been very successful in raising capital. Is there any particular reason that you've been so? Very hired Eleanor. I think there's a few different things that has made us have had great support over the last few years when the market's been frosty. But this year alone, we've done 14 exits. We sold 14 companies. And we read a lot about how it's also difficult to exit companies. And I think that's been one of the variables in more recent times. I think the niche that we are in. And also from a global perspective, the Northern European market has viewed as very interesting. There's a lot going on. It's also stable. And you know that the numbers that you see are actually what you get. But then it's also about being partners, being close to your investors. We often have our investors come in alongside us next to our investments, which is called co-invest. So there's many factors such as that that also helped out. But ultimately, we have a great team. And I think culture that--
–I know we have the stats, but I don't have that on top of my head. –It's a lot. –It's like a sort of 100– –that type of number. –I have it more. –Is it? –Ja, okay. –The market was extremely hot back in 21–22. –Now it's cooled down over the last couple years– –and I'm interested what does that mean from an investor perspective? –Is it easier or harder today to find interesting investment opportunities? –I think it's a little bit both. It's easier for me as a bit to see investor. It's easier because a lot of funds have pulled away– –from investing in consumer and we're still there. So in that way it's less competition for good assets– –but I think all the good assets out there– –and the companies that are profitable and growing– –they get really good valuation still. So it's not like the valuations has come down that much for the good assets. –Ja. –And then I think we're out of the market– –but an interesting inflection point where a lot of companies had to turn profitable really fast– –after the funding went down. And now it's really time, okay, but out of the ones who did the cost cuts– –and reduced their up-expace– –are they now able to get back to growth? –Ja. –And now we're starting to see that. So we're really starting to see which ones are the ones we should back– –and which ones are the ones that we'll fail. So it's really interesting times now. And have you had to change your investment criteria in any way then over the last couple of years? We have been very consistent, I would say. Of course, slightly stronger focus on profitability– –and destiny control, I would say, given the lack of capital– –and also on the debt side. But no, it's more or less the same. Okay. How does the market look today? And what do you think the private equity industry is going to look like moving forward? And the thing is that in the niche where we are and the mathematics that we look at– –we were asking earlier about the pipeline– –and there are more opportunities there than we've ever seen before. We typically, when we race and close and you fund– –most of the companies that we will invest in are already in dialogue with us one way or another– –or we're tracking them. And the perspective will be very favourable on the market. It's also interesting since I'm in the US right now– –that I do see an increased appetite for Europe– –in particular the northern half of Europe. You also see even more interest from Canadian investors– –which is a large investor group– –that want to increase the exposure. So I think the ecosystem is looking quite positive. Yeah, but that's interesting. And I guess somehow tied into that is the trend that we see in Stockholm– –where there's a few international investment banks that have started– –to establish themselves in the Stockholm market. And clearly there's a reason behind that. And an expectation of deal flow in the future– –I presume you must be able to read into that. I think it's actually very fascinating that we're sitting here in Stockholm– –when talking about priority equity. Because if you look at a global basis– –of course the US has always been the first day invented priority equity– –the done it for so long. But if you look at certain cities– –the size of Stockholm– –versus the number of successful priority equity companies that come out of this region– –is the stats are fantastic. It's a very dense priority equity area– –and you can consistently see over years that this part of the world– –has actually outperformed many other regions year after year. There are many studies that show that. So I think you're right, there's a lot of things going on here– –and if I would look at going into priority equity as a career choice– –I think they're going to be plenty of opportunities– –both similar to Cecilia's role on the investment side– –but what I do and the colleagues I work with– –the team within investor relations, capital formation, fundraising– –co-investments, I think it's a very versatile role. It's changed a lot over the last number of years. There are many interesting skill sets that means that we can effectively– –have all these global investors investing with us. So I would say that this plenty of opportunities going forward– –and I think there's going to be growth in particular in IR. But that's a really interesting point, Ellen. Or why is it do you think that Stockholm has become this hub for excellence within the private equity industry? It's been a long time into making– –and I think there's in my perspective three main things– –why? And the first one is talent. There's a lot of very educated skilled people here. We also see that with every Spotify, Clarna, EQT, King, Loveable Success story– –the ecosystem widens further. It draws international talent and attention. So it's a little bit of a self-fulfilling trend. But also, if you look back before all this was obvious– –we hear from a lot of our investors that when you go to the Nordics– –the data that you look at is actually real data. It's not about that range. It's not I'm guesstimating. It's actually the knowledge that we have.
Whenever I mentioned my background, no one really cares, that I've been with the only thing I care about is my background with Uber. I spend much less time, but that's pretty interesting I think. - What does career progression look like? - A typical entry level into the investment team at Verdain is 2-4, 2-6 years professional experience, and then you start to work your way up. The team, or how does it typically work? Oo hitts literally good question because typically what happens is the people that are engaged in what they do the turn out to be quite good at that. I would encourage if you don't know exactly are you think you might know explore the things that where you are truly engaged, where you genuinely are interested and‑and build from there I know thatoooo sound very concrete. But it does come across clearly when we interview motivation, dedication that you dare to try different things we talked a lot about how you need to navigate different situations all these things add up. I think whether you work on a children's camp doing soccer or you're doing an internship with a big consulting firm it all shows that you can be versatile.
