312. The Difference Between Having Identity and an Idea of Yourself

The episode explores the theme of identity, framed by the Rocky quote: "It's not how hard you hit, but how hard you can get hit." The hosts argue that the quality of one's identity is revealed under pressure—when life challenges you, your true self emerges. They introduce "inside-out living," where a strong internal identity pushes outward to influence surroundings, rather than being shaped by external forces. This is compared to osmosis: if what's inside is stronger, you change your environment; if weaker, you are changed. The biblical basis is cited, with Jesus saying "My kingdom is within you," and believers called to be salt and light. Identity must precede purpose; people often seek purpose first, but true direction comes from knowing who you are. The hosts use Jesus' own life as an example—he had a process of discovering his identity through scripture and experience, not an instant understanding. Finally, the apple tree analogy reinforces that fruit (actions) reveals identity, regardless of external criticism. The message encourages listeners to develop a resilient, God-given identity that can withstand life's hits and positively impact the world.

The quality of your identity is what happens when you hit it. That's why I open with the Rocky quote, right? Like, it's not how hard you hit. It's how hard you can get hit. How hard can your identity get hit? Everybody has one. Everyone has an idea of themselves. Then you go through something that tests you to your absolute core and you know if that identity is strong or not. That's impossible. Let me tell you what I believe. Your weakness is not your technique. Yes! Yes! Don't think you are. No you won't. The Impossible Life Podcast? I'm just sitting on a winning lottery ticket. An idea that is fully formed, fully understood, that sticks. This is the Impossible Life Podcast because Nick and I are attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is that nothing is impossible. So instead of using Impossible as an excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of Impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been done before, that just means it's unexplored. If they tell you it's too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified. Impossible is a default label used by uncurragious people, unwilling to take a risk. The real truth is this. The solution to any Impossible task starts with this question. If I had to, what would it take? What would it take? Welcome to another episode of The Impossible Life Podcast. I'm your co-host Nick Surface and I'm looking across at a man whose grip is so strong, he's never used a pair of pliers in his life. That's right friends, the Fomore de VCU. [Fomore de VCU] Garen-Unca-Bach, a man whose handshake is more of an examination of your masculinity than a greedy one. Rentschance is a mindset. You gotta have rentchance. Like I said that to one time, she was trying to like open. I'm like you gotta have rentchance. Use your hand like she's like what does that mean? What does that mean? It gets the people going. It's folded in. Why does that mean you explain this to me? What does that mean? Your hands just need to be stronger. I love that. I made that thing up and I thought it was pretty funny. I didn't realize rentchance was actually a philosophy. Rentschance is a thing. Why can't you make your hands operate like I said, pliers? It's because you're weak mentally. Actually, that's true. Okay, great. Well, I did not see that coming. I always like when I get a surprise and as I've gone back through our older episodes, I realized that that's pretty much every time I never know what you're going to say. My daughter was asking about that and I was like the first time that you ever, that Uncle Garrett ever hears my answer is live on the podcast because she was laughing at us while we were listening to us. Anyways, really Nick is like my wife in that. One of his greatest victories is just if they can make me laugh. Oh, dude, I'm victorious all the time. I live in victory. Praise the Lord. Okay. So, dude, I'm very excited about this episode as I often am because this is, I'm just going to be straight with people because of some things that are going on in our schedule. We did it all back to back, which we don't often do. So we recorded the episode, which would be 312 about the journey that we went on and it instantly inspired this next episode that we're about to do for you about inside out living, which I'm so excited to share with you guys because we talk so much about how when you go on a journey, you think it's about one thing, but what God's actually doing is he's developing your who and developing your identity. And what this kind of boils down to is people are people are going through stuff. You're going through life. Okay. And as our man Rocky would say, it's not about how hard you hit, but about how hard you can get hit. Is life, life in you or you, life in life? Are you going like as you go through stuff? Is it changing you or you the one that's affecting your environment? Because most of the time people are going through stuff and it's like, "Oh, man, it's really hard. It's beating me up. I don't know if I can do this." Or, "Are you overcoming in what you're going through?" And that is not a reflection of what you're going through. It's a reflection of you. Yeah. Because I think about identity all the time. Man, like it's something that's probably the thing I think about the most. And you said something yesterday that we're going to get into. And I realized that the summary of having a strong identity is that what's in you is pushing out on what's outside of you. Like when you live from the inside out, that it's always coming from the inside rather than the outside, that's when you know that you've got a strong identity. And with that being said, gee, I can't wait to get into this. Now, one of the things that I have quoted to you a few times and that we've shared many moods and make really enjoys quoting me to me. I do. This is not you to you. This is your best friend, Josh Kraft to you. But I remember I was talking to Josh about, like, Josh has so many great stories about you just basically being very unique, shall we say, and quirky at a young age. And I remember I was like, man, did you guys even think that he would be a Navy SEAL? Because I've talked to people who knew you when you were like a teenager, like, I would have never picked that guy to be a Navy SEAL. Now, maybe they didn't know you that well. But, you know, obviously they did. Boom. They did not. But what Josh said is he was like, man, Garrett was always trying to do things and we were telling him he was crazy. He was telling me this story about you busting your lip because you tried to pull the Superman off of a homemade ramp. And everybody was like, there's no way you can get enough air to do a Superman. And like, you guys don't know. Now, they were right. Yeah. And people who've never done a Superman on bike trying to tell me you can't do that. And you, like, if somebody who's like, you know, a ramp expert, a BMX, a great BMX rider, is like, that's probably not the best ramps you do Superman on. I would have reconsidered it. Right. But this is like, you were like 10 or 11. So like, think about the level of thinking that's going on in your head at that time. And so Josh, he was telling me the story and he was laughing. I was like, I think Garrett did this and then next thing, you know, we had to stop playing because Garrett had to go to the ER because you, you didn't quite land this. You did the Superman, but you didn't get the full landing. And so you smashed your face up. Now, but what Josh said is like when I, when Superman is where one hand on the handlebar is one hand on the bike seat, you, you'd extend the bike out in front of you and then pull it back in. I did like a half Superman. Basically, like, got my hand down on the handlebar, started to put out and then did not have enough air trying to pull the bike back in, sat on my hand. And so I landed from, I didn't land well and landed with one hand on the handlebars. Right. So my face at the handlebars. There you go. And off you went to the ER, which was not an uncommon experience for your, your parents took my son there yesterday for the first time. So fun times. Anyways, so the quote that Pastor Josh said about you, he said, Garrett knew who he was before anyone else did. And I remember when he said that, I was like, I just grabbed onto it because I couldn't say that in your presence. I told you you said it because I was like, what a great way to sum up. What I was so drawn to you at first in identity. And that's great to say like, oh, you knew who you were before anyone else did. But guess what that's going to do? That's going to have some proof that's going to follow it. And so like quick summary of Garrett's life, you can get the full summary. I think it's on episode 94. I'll double check that. It's either 94 or 96 where you go into your story. And for those that aren't going to go back, I'll just give you a very quickly, quick thing. Because Garrett knew who he was, there's been so many times where people have been like, you can't do that. And Garrett's been like, watch me. And this was Garrett being skinny in eighth grade to becoming very muscular. And people being like, oh, you're not this, you're not that. You're not an athlete. Became a very muscular, well built guy. Then he, you're too young to be here in youth, right? Like, oh, you shouldn't be here. And he becomes a key part of the youth group. This may not seem like big wins, but these were things to him suddenly show up to buds. You shouldn't be here. You've got no chance on the box. What's going to happen in hell week? We don't even think you're going to make it. Oh, yeah, not only am I going to make it, but I'm going to go for a run on the beach at the end of buds. And he did it. Oh, hey, gee, you can't be able to factor in a year. Man, you can't change. You can't revolutionize manufacturing. And I'm sat here wearing a union shirt and you're smiling because you're, this is Garrett is in process of doing probably the biggest you can't do that in his life based on who he knows God made him to be. And so this theme has come up over and over and over again. And by the way, I'm looking forward to sharing the story of union at some point. It's a big good one. It's still being written over and over and over again because, Michael, I'm just going to repeat it. He knew who he was before anyone else did. Now the great thing is God's desire for us to know who we are and to have a strong sense of identity. And remember from the episode two weeks ago, or I should say two episodes ago last week, what you said, you don't know who you are because you don't know who your father is. Like that, that sense of God with you, that is God's desire for all of us. And so like I said, I think you inside out living is to me, the journey of when you is like is actually knowing who you are. So gee, inside out living, like you kind of already touched on. But what is it? Yeah, because this is really what it takes that this is a different way of talking about identity. Yeah. We're talking about identity, but I'm going to talk about it for in a different form. I would say hopefully simpler, simpler. One of the things I've learned just in speaking is like when I first started speaking many years ago, I'd be like, well, said that already. Can't say that anymore. And that's an amateur's understanding of speaking. What a professional understands is you're saying some of the same things over and over and over again. I'd learn to measure my speaking by talking to people afterwards, not looking for comp, when people like, when you give me compliments, I'm tuned out. What I don't care. I know that's true as well. What I want to hear is what I'm judging myself on is I know what my message was. What did you receive from my message? Ethicacy, right? It's I can yell into the radio, right? But if my transmission did not get across to you and what you say back to me isn't what I said, then I know my transmission was poor, right? This is what I'm always judging. And so one of the things that I've learned in speaking, sometimes you'll say the same thing, say it over again, right? And if you like picked apart how I speak, you'll hear me do this. I'll say something. I'll say it the same what I'll say the same thing in a different way. And then I'll say the same thing again in a different way, because I'm coming at you and again, this is like this goes back to like principles of communication. I'm going to keep sending the transmission. I'm going to stand over here, I'm going to stand over here, I'm going to send it from this angle, I'm going to send it from this angle. What do I got to do to get this transmission into you? And so really this is a different transmission of identity because the quality of your identity is what happens when you hit it. That's why I open with the Rocky quote. It's not how hard you hit, it's how hard you can get hit. Everybody has one, everyone has an idea of themselves. In case, and this is what, when we say inside out living, here's really the test of your identity is what's inside of you stronger than what's outside of you. That's the test, right? Because if you know, it may be like look tough on the surface but then you put it under a bunch of pressure and that thing cracks, you didn't really have an identity. You had an idea of one, you had the version of one at the beginning of one and really this hits that, there's always natural supernatural correlation. And this is osmosis, okay? If you remember from science class, like nobody really liked chemistry, but if you remember in biology, but if you remember from science class, what osmosis is, osmosis is your cells and media are always seeking homeostasis where everything's the same, okay? So like if you have a cell, let's just like this is, this is a kindergarten science, but like you have a cell that has more salt in it than the other cells around it. Well salt is going to go out from the really salty cell and to the other ones that are less salty. So if there's more on the inside of this cell, things are going out of it, okay? If you have a cell that doesn't have a lot of salt in it and all the other cells around it have a lot of salt in it, well the salt is going to come from the outside to inside, okay? And so like you are always in a form of osmosis in your environment and it's a test of is what's in you stronger than what's outside of you, right? If there's more outside than inside, it's changing you. If you're stronger than what's around you, you're changing it. That's very good. And that's like that is how your identity works in every environment, right? And this is like it's a test of your character, right? You can think you have character and you go hang out with people who have, who have low character, right? But we'll see how strong your character really is. Do they change you or do you change them? Very good. Right. And so your identity has the like who you are, has the ability to affect the environments that you go into if it's strong enough. So that's like really, that's what inside out living is. And understand this is biblical, right? Jesus said, my kingdom is not of this world. My kingdom is within you. Wherever you go, are you, is the kingdom coming out of you into all these other places? Or is the every environment that you go to, it's influencing you. It's, it's softening. It's weakening the kingdom that's inside of you. It says, my kingdom is not of this world. He said, you are the salt of the earth, right? Wherever you go, are you salt in that place? Or are you getting influenced? He says, you're the light of the world, right? This is like the journey and the life that we've put on that that we've been put in. The question is, are you the message or are you the audience? Yeah. Right? Wherever you go, are you the message or are you the audience? Right? And so what's inside of you is stronger than what's outside of you. You have the ability to influence the world wherever you go. Man, I love that so much. And, you know, you said this quote last time. Until you know who you are, you can't go on the journey God has for you. And I love that because something that I've seen in scriptures, that identity precedes purpose, that's how I said it. And everybody wants purpose, right? So number one thing we get asked about, what's my purpose? What we don't want is the formation of our identity because that takes a lot longer. And it's very, it's something that we don't know. It's something that like, you can't just go, here's your three steps. When you know who you are, you know what you're there to do. A lot of people they want the purpose before the identity. Correct. Right? Tell me I'm supposed to be a golfer professional golfer. Now I know, oh, that's my journey. Now I know who I am. Right. Exactly. When you know who you are, then you can go on the journey. Yeah. And we see this in Jesus. And you might be like, wait, what do you mean? I think it's a fascinating thing to understand that when Jesus was born from the womb, he wasn't like, I am the son of God. Here's exactly what I'm supposed to do. Like he had a process to go through and you see this. Right. He learned what obedience through suffering. Wait a minute. This is Jesus. This is literally God. Yeah, he had to learn obedience through the things he suffered. He was a man. He was a man of many sorrows. Wait, what? This is the son of God who were following. Yes. So imagine this. You're Jesus and your mom's had you and you've got your brothers and you're starting to get to the age of understanding. And when Jesus is 12, which we get a picture of him and John, the book of John, we know that that by that point, he's noticeably different. He's got a little bit of like, I have to be in my father's house. Okay. So he knows who he is. Like, he understands. And we kind of think, well, he was just always that way. Well, think about this. You know, you've told your kids, your little daughter came in here before we record this episode and was just being so cute as a five year old is. And like, reasoning with a five year old is amazing. I was like, I'm to observe with you too. So imagine Jesus is like, Mommy, like, you know, what was, what was I, what was I like as a baby? Common question. And imagine the story that that Jesus, mom tells him, Oh, hey, your birth was a little different. And like, as he hears this story and then he goes as a young man and he's starting to be around the scripture as he goes to the temple. And he hears Isaiah 714. Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and we'll call him a manual, a manual, which means God with us. And he's sitting there going like, huh, a Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son. What did my mom say was different about my birth? Because it always talks about how Mary treasured these things in her heart. And look, you can say like, oh, that's a bit of a reach, Nick. And like, okay, it doesn't say in scripture that Mary sat down and told Jesus the story. But you're with your parents. You ask questions. He was a kid. Like, and when Jesus was so adamant about that scripture would be fulfilled. There's so many times he says that to the men. Why? Because once he realized he was the Messiah, do you not think he had more of an intense understanding and a more intense study of the scripture because he knew what he had to do because he knew who he was? And that's why I always use that story of Jesus becoming because I think sometimes we just gloss over and just assume that Jesus just came out of the womb, you know, carrying the whatever you think he would be carrying as the Messiah. And it was like, no, he had a process to go through the same as we do. Or the sword in his hand. Yeah. Exactly. So I say that for it's a kind of hopefully being encouraging to people that you really are going to have the formation by dating. That's what we're giving you today. Do you get this analogy yesterday and of like, and this is one that inside out summary kind of click for me. You talked about like an apple tree. And then this was the picture of like inside no matter who you are being stronger than the outside. Can you share that with everybody? I was just talking about, you know, what we were talking about yesterday was being fruitful. But that fruit is a reflection of who you are. That's what Jesus said. He says, you'll know them by your fruit. What do you call an apple tree? It's an apple tree. It's what it's fruit is. Okay. Does that apple tree ever, does that apple tree question who it is? Now that apple tree knows what it's DNA is. And so you could stand outside of an apple tree like you could, you know, have some stupid prey outside of outside of an apple tree holding up signs yelling at it. You'll never be any good. You're an orange tree. Apples are wrong. You know, apples are racist. Remember you want to say to this tree to try and convince it that it's not what it is. And as long as that apple tree keeps taking in nutrients, it's DNA is not going to change. It's going to keep producing apples. You can't make that apple tree question who it is. It knows who it is. That's what it's called. That's what its name is. It's what it's DNA is. It's just going to continue to produce. And that the fruit is a reflection of who it is. It's not going to change. You can't yell at it or lie to it to make it be something that it's not. Right. You make it there and go like, oh, well, an apple tree, you know, it just is what it is. Our favorite saying on this podcast. And it's like, well, okay, yeah, an apple tree doesn't have a brain for sure, but that's a picture of what actual, when you, when you are something, it doesn't matter what everybody else is saying. That's why this whole like gender confusion thing is so stupid. You can say whatever you want. The end of the day, your male or female because God's made you that way. You can't change it. I said that yesterday at my admin. I said that apple trees, not going to read a book and decide to chop its genitals off and become something else. It can't do that. Right. Right. That apple tree knows what it is. When you know who you are, then you produce fruit. Right. And that's what I said yesterday. Identity produces fruit. Fruit does not produce an identity. Yeah. And I love that so much. So I hope you guys are capturing what inside out, what this concept is. And I guess the obvious question, Jay, what I'm hoping that we can answer now for people is how do you know if what's inside you is stronger than what's outside of you? Because you gave a great example. You talked about if you think you're a person of great character and you hang out with a bunch of people of low character, who's influencing you? Okay. That's a good specific scenario. And like everyone can relate to that. But like what are the things that are always true? Because you may not always be around people of low character. Yeah. Well, I've got a, I'm going to, that is the test. Right. Are you influencing your environment or is the environment influencing you? You may not know that like instantly in a snapshot. And if you want, like you put cells on a, on a petri dish and look at them, you'll see where the osmosis is happening. You'll see where the change is occurring. Right. So this isn't so much a like that specific example that you gave. You watch it happen. Like you go hang out with low character people. The test is not revealed. Like the answer to the test is not revealed instantly. But it is revealed over time. Yeah. Okay. And so time is going to reveal this to you. What I do want to talk about is I've just got a few examples for you of where like the battle is happening. That is what's inside of you stronger than what's outside of you. So I'll talk about the thing that's inside. I'll talk about the thing that's outside and what you have to listen to. For a jump into that, there's a, as we were kicking off on this, I shared with Nick, you know, when Nick says, you knew who you were before anyone else was, there's something that I've had the privilege of being with around Pastor Keith since I was a little boy. I've had the privilege of being around Pastor Keith since I was a little boy. He's been my dad's best friend for 40 years. And what's cool is been to watch him progress over time. like some of the things. He thinks he says now or more refined, but he was saying it 20 years ago. He's just trimmed it up a little bit. But he used to always, one of the things he says now is there's four voices. There's God's voice, your voice, their voice, and the devil's voice. But he used to talk about, he didn't always say it that way, that's sharp now. But he used to always just talk about how important your own voices. What voices are you listening to? Those are things he'd said when I was little. And maybe just 'cause I was 11 at the time, I didn't hear. That's just what I received. That's what I caught from it. But that is what I caught from it. I caught was how important your own voices and your voice has to be stronger than the voices around you. Otherwise that's the wrong osmosis, right? They're changing you. Yeah. Where that strength comes from. We'll get back to the episode in just a minute. And then we're going to get it. Then I'm going to jump into like, here's the inside, here's the outside. These are the battles you have to win to be that thing that is resilient and whatever circumstance you're in, I just want to say this before we get into those things, is it is a reflect like it's inside out living which is the life that we're called to in following Christ. It is a spiritual life, right? Transformation is living from the inside out not from the outside in, right? This is it's Romans 12, 1 and 2, right? Like you've got to put your flesh on the altar so your thinking can be changed so that you can be transformed and know his purpose. So that you can live your purpose so that you can become what you're called to be. It all starts from an inside out process and that is meant to happen through a life in Christ. Now let me just display the principles here for you. Right, like you can David Goggins your way through this. And I always use Goggins as an example not because I'm beating him up. I have some of the greatest respect for him 'cause he's an incredibly tough individual. I got to be around some really tough individuals in the seal teams and it taught me things. It showed me what like some of the extremes are you learn in extreme environments, right? And David Goggins is an extreme for sure due to his own thing, right? Like he's gone beyond the seal brand, he's the Goggins brand. Right. What Goggins has inside of him is some things that are a lot stronger than the environments that are around him for the most part, just not infinitely strong. There's only one thing that is inside you that can be infinitely stronger than what's outside of you. And that's when Christ is inside of you. Right, when you have let Christ into your life, when you've been transformed spiritually from the inside out, there is nothing on the outside that can break you. What David Goggins has is that pretty much anything on the outside can't break him, but there are things that can, which is a dangerous place to be when you've been convinced that like, well, I'm tougher than my environment, right? Garrett doesn't think he's tougher than an environment. What Garrett knows of that Christ who's in him is greater than anything that he could face that's on the outside, which leads us right into the first point here. Right, first point here, 'cause again, this is about inside out living. How's the voice inside of you stronger than what's outside of you? Well, this is where the first battle here is the battle of truth versus pressure. Okay, like you test, like pressure is what tests truth. Right, truth, like truth is always true. That's the test of it, right? And that's what, when Nick and I talk about principles, when Nick and I are like discovering things, what Nick sees me do is he, I take things to the extreme, 'cause in the extreme, if it's not true in the extremes, that's not true, it's just a method. Right, and a lot of people bank on methods, methods are nice, but when you put them through the fire, they fall apart, right? And so what you've gotta know is learn how to figure out what is true in life. And if it's true, it's always true. And sometimes you can convince yourself something's not true. Like you can think if I jump on a trampoline, gravity's not real. Well, for half of a second, it feels like it's not. It's like I'm going against it. Look, for a millisecond, I'm floating in the air. Well, eventually time reveals truth. Right, and so when you learn how to look further down the road, when you learn how to play the tape, like we've talked about, when you understand what's always true, even when, right, like, you know, it feels like gravity's being overcome and maybe gravity, you know, in the context that gravity is on your side, right? But it's like, man, I'm believing in gravity, but it's not working right now. Right, well, when you know what, when you know how gravity works, you can be patient. You say, you know what, this thing may be going up for right now, but it's going to come back down. These things may be working against me, but I know what's true, right? With your life is on the line, and you're watching this thing float up in the air, you're like, what? Right, but when you know what's true, no amount of pressure, no amount of pressure that you're going through is going to shake you, because you know what's true. You know what'll happen in the end. This is the understanding that God's always victorious, right? When I know that that's true, I'm willing to continue, I'm willing to stay underneath the pressure. Knowing what's true is how you face giants, right? David said, like, because God was with me when I fought lions and bears, so I will face you too. David didn't say like, didn't size up, glide, but like, you know, I think I've got enough in me to kill this guy. He's stood on what's true. He didn't stand on himself. And so this is one of the tests of is what's inside of you stronger than what's outside of you, is what is the truth that you live by? Truth is always true. And so if you bank on some information or some experience or some knowledge, well, as soon as what's outside of you gets tougher than that thing, you'll crack on the inside. And so we convince ourselves sometimes that we're tough because we go through stuff like, man, I passed the test. No, you just banked on something that might have been tougher than what that external thing was, but you've got to bank on the things that never break. And truth never breaks. Yeah, and that's why I always, if you listen to us, and I hope that you listen to more than one podcast, you'll hear so much reference to principles. That's why you always go to principles because you know that principles are how God created an orderly world. And-- - Galatians 6, 7 God will not be mocked. - Yeah. - A man reaps what he says. - Yeah. - It's one of your favorites. And it's so what we're saying is-- - It's my daily encouragement. - Yeah. - Right? I face opposition every day. And you know what I'm standing on. I'm not standing on, man, I'm gonna show you one day. - Right. - I look at my enemies and I say, I look at the honest, I say God will not be mocked. - Right. - I know what I'm standing on. Right? Gravity may look like it's going against me. God will not be mocked. - Yeah. - It didn't say, "Garrett will not be mocked." - Right. - Said God will not be mocked. - Yeah. And the word of God is truth, man. That's what we're saying. - So that's, I mean, that this first lesson is seek truth. Stand on what's true. Sometimes, sometimes live and write. Sometimes tell them the truth. Sometimes have in character. Sometimes, like, sometimes these things look like you are throwing yourself into a ditch. - Yeah. - And this is just those moments where you're bouncing on the trampoline or your enemies bouncing on the trampoline, they look like they're flying. For a moment, for a moment. Let me do what I do real quick to you before I move on to number two, because I think you said some things. And you gave the analogy of bouncing on a trampoline, which is a very simple one. And you talked about what your filters for truth is would it be true in every context? Right? Like, you talk about it, you take it to the extreme. Now, if you're seeking truth, you may like grasp that and go, "Okay, I need to have truth." We are in a world, especially if you spend any time on social media, really just anywhere, where people find, it's basically a widget world. They find something, they find-- - Hacks. - Yeah, hacks. I know how to get, and it seems to violate principles. - You know what happens to hacks? They disappear. - They get patched. - Yeah. That's exactly right. - Four time. - You've got to look at all these, you know, dudes selling you their success program on the internet and understand their success platform is going to last for about six months before it gets patched. - Yeah. - Yeah, that's exactly right. Because I mean, I just think in our lifetime, I think about some of the people who are like, "I'm gonna be coming to Amazon and sell there and that's gonna change my life." And for some people, it did. And then-- - Don't be shut. Amazon is super power. - Right. - Okay. Amazon is super power today. Do not be surprised if in our lifetime, we see Amazon disappear. - Right. - Which sounds insane. - What? - Sounds insane to people. - Yeah, go back to the '80s and say that to people about JC Penny and Sears and they would have said, "You're crazy." Well, the world changed. And that's what you're saying. It's like, so you may be like, "Well, that means I can't trust anything." No, the more you begin to know the word of God and you know, what's actually principally true, the less you get caught up in things that have a temporary impact. You start to be good. I think that's really what it is. You begin to separate eternal from temporal. And you start to identify temporal things a lot more because so much of what's growth hacks of whatever, it may be 30 days to get you insert whatever you want or this guy on the internet said, "He knows exactly how to get me what I think I want, which is money for my business." And then you sit there and you go, "Well, you get all upset or it works for a time." And then you hope that it works forever. But what works now won't work in five years if it's not based on principles. And that's what we're saying. Sometimes you can be seemingly beating the odds is what people would say, "Oh yeah, I beat the odds." Okay, but the great thing about odds and statistics is what you know is the more you have, the more numbers, the more times you have in repetition of it, the more that the statistics, the more you have in repetition of it, the more that the statistics, become accurate. And so what we're saying is temporal and eternal, right? And I want to put some meat on that for people to actually be able to apply it. That's what you're saying, truth over pressure. Is it's like what's true is always true. So seek truth, aka begin to identify what's eternal, principally true, based on the word of God as opposed to what's temporal, worldly wisdom seems to have an element of efficacy, but won't last. Is that fair? Yeah. So, so this first one is just about truth over pressure and the lesson is seek truth, continue to seek truth. And the more that you can find truth, the more you can stand on it, the more the voice it's inside you is going to be stronger than what's outside of you. Second one, right? And that's what all these are. This is, okay, how do I make the voice in me stronger than the voice that's outside of me? The second one is about endurance versus results. Okay, what endurance, what is endurance? Well, it's one of the keys to winning it life, right? Says James, chapter one, right? But maturity comes from endurance and perseverance and that maturity is you lacking nothing in life. I think that's a place that that is a title everyone who's listening to this show would like to have lacks nothing. Yeah, right? It's a great place to be. Well, it doesn't come. You would think the more results I get, the less all lack. Yeah, that's what you would think. But it says that endurance is the key to lacking nothing. Yeah, not gaining more is not how you like nothing. Who you become is how you like nothing, right? Get become someone, right? And this is one of the things that I've talked about that Nick loves. The what like my approach to challenges to life isn't how do I know the answer to every problem is become someone who can answer any problem. Yeah, this is endurance versus results. I'm not seeking the how do I win? How do I get the victory become someone that can run any race? Right? When you continue to practice and develop endurance. Well, whatever you go through and this was one of the things that I like I put this on seal training when I was going through it. I said that everything that I wanted my life is on the other side of this. It wasn't what I meant by that wasn't that being a Navy seal means everything to me. Right? It meant a lot to me. But I also knew that running this race was practice for my next race. I had to get the endurance and the perseverance here so that I could have it in the next place because what I'm teaching myself here isn't to chase after these goals that like I'll do something, you know, being a having a Navy seal trying that is a shiny object. I was not chasing the shiny object. I was chasing the growth into the development instead of I can make it through this process. What other process is going to be able to challenge me? I know if I can do this, I can do anything else. Yeah. And this is pursuing endurance instead of pursuing objectives when you continually practice the processes in your life, then you're preparing yourself to overcome anything. Right? Practice seek endurance. Seek to grow. Enjoy these challenges. That's how the voice in set like what'll get you off track is chasing after the results because when you pursue that and you don't get them, you don't know who you are. Right? When you pursue perseverance, when you pursue growth, when you pursue strengthening yourself, everything you're going through the harder it hits you the more you enjoy it, the more you know you're supposed to be there. That's how the voice inside of you gets stronger than the voice outside of you. Yeah. That's so good. I think we get fixate on results are really practical one. And this was actually something that I was thinking through for myself recently is I decide that I got to get down the old lean up again because I've been in bulk mode. So I've decided to switch again, which is good. I'm about to get on them myself. There you go. Now what do I want is I want to get down my body fat percentage as fast as possible. Right? When I'm fixate on results. I was sitting there and I was kind of like going through looking at my most recent scan and I was like, you know, I'm sitting there talking to myself. I was like, you know what I need to get really good at I had Kobe in my head love the process. And because I was actually listening to one of our podcasts while I was doing the basic discipline training, which I can't say enough how good that thing is I know it's self indulgent. It sounds self indulgent because we wrote it. But I'm going through it as a listener. And I'm just like, I'm getting takeaways even though I help write the program with you know what I mean. It's so good. So anyways, as I'm going through, I'm like, you know what I need to get really good at. I don't need to get really good at being like, man, I can't wait to like think about how my abs are going to look or what lean or I need to get really good at enjoying eating the way I need to eat today. I know exactly how many macros I need to get how many calories I need to get what I need to do today. I need to get really good at just enjoying winning the day and not even think about where I'm going. And you get fixated on results. You then start to go like, how do I get there as fast as possible? A K, how do I take the shortcuts? And you're not that's not an endurance thought process. That is man, once I get my tried it, that's the finish line. Man, that's that you're in trouble. Yeah, you're in trouble. But we all fall into that because we know what we want so bad. But when you start to actually want the process and you want to learn and you want to like not because like the thought process like, well, how can I just get through this? No, how can I learn to love what I'm doing? This sucks. It sucks being hungry. Yeah, it can or you can start to get really good at it. Does becoming a winner suck. No, it's wonderful. Next point. Yes. Right. So this last one was endurance results. Number three here. It's a doozy. It's about evidence over affirmation. Okay. But a lot of people will seek. And we talked about this in the last episode where like this is one of the things I'm I'm. It's not people think I you know, I just enjoy poking people and enjoy being a harsh people. Now I just care and I know what works and I know how to build people and so I'm not going to give you the sugar that you want. Right. The sugar is making you weak affirmation is sugar. Right. It's you like, oh, oh, not now that they see who I am. That must be who I am. Right. That affirmation makes you weak. The more you seek external validation, what think about that? The whole point of this is like what makes you great when makes you strong is that the voice inside of you stronger than the voice outside of you. What is affirmation? It's giving weight to the voice outside of you. It's one of the most dangerous things that you can pursue. Right. Like, oh, yes, they see it. If you listen to like great champion players, quarterback, baseball players, golfers, listen to them in interviews, the guys who are like the goats, like the real greats, they like get they get frustrated almost by validation from the reporters, like they shrug it off, like it is annoying to them. And that that is the strength of their internal character saying like don't listen to that voice. Right. And then the only time you'll see like really these champion players get upset in interviews is they don't care if they're spreading lies about them. They don't care. These guys give zero weight to the reporter's voices, but you'll see them get angry every once in a while when they're saying something like these guys care about their audience and they care about the people who want to be like them. They care about because all these great golfers, all these great football players had people that they looked up to when they were young. And they'll call out these reporters every once in a while like you're spreading lies. Right. Because they care about what the young people that are wanting to be like them are listening to what is so important. Right. Is not that you care like and the point I was making there with these great athletes in interviews is they don't care about affirmation at all, but they do care about is these private evidence points. Okay, what is evidence? Well, you've like you have proved private victories in this evidence is the things that you've done with yourself over and over and over again to show yourself and tell yourself who you are. Right. When you seek that evidence like and it's personal and it's private. Right. What are you saying? My voice is more important. Like yes. Nobody saw this. I'm going to go out and do this to prove it to myself. Right. If you went back and watched me from like the time I was 17 to the time I went into the seal teams, you would have thought I was a psychopath. I was doing stuff that nobody is watching out there doing it by myself just for me. What was I doing? I'm telling myself who I am. Right. I wasn't asking for anybody to see it. And there's and that's where you know my dad likes to tell the story because he said I wasn't doing it for anybody to watch. Most of the time I was doing it early in the morning. My parents are watching me just because it made them nervous. I get in the I get in in Texas in January when the water is you know 35 degrees 40 degrees in my pool. I'd sit in there for 30 minutes until like I'm about to pass out and then climb out of the water. Go for a run to warm myself up and then come back and do it again. What was I doing? Yeah. Nobody's watching my parents words sneaking of peak through the window trying to make sure I didn't die out there in the pool. What was I doing? I was creating evidence for myself. Right. I'm telling myself this is who I am. So when I and what I didn't even know this at the time. Right. Cause I all I watch was a discovery channel documentary about seal training. I didn't know how cold the water was in the Pacific. Right. You know I couldn't have I didn't know kids preparing for seal training. They're asking their AI. How how how how long do I need to stay in you know what's the water temperature out there. Okay. How do I what kind of training process. Do I need to do to make sure that I'm strong enough. I wasn't doing any of that. I didn't know Jack about the water temperature. I thought log PT was every single day. I haze the crap out of myself. Right. I'm teaching myself. This is who you are. I didn't know what the program was going to be. You know I make fun of a. Sometimes I make fun of these guys who get into like a debt program delayed enlistment program who weren't in there for like six or seven years with a seal mentor preparing. I was like, man, you guys went through like extra buds. But I put myself through buds. Right. I just didn't have. Not looking for someone to tell me. Not looking for a seal instructor. I'm not looking for other people in my class. Like, Oh man, this guy's a great. This guy's going to make it. I was trying to tell myself you're going to make it. Huh. Okay. I was going to ask you. I'm glad that you said that I was going to ask you what the difference was between evidence and affirmation because a lot of who's voice. That's right. It's personal evidence because for some people the affirmation is their evidence. And what you're saying is that's wrong. If other people's affirmation is your evidence, then that's not real evidence. But when the evidence is you again, that's why I was going back to like these guys with the reporters. You'll see them get chirp up when the reporters make an identity statement of you this or like, you'll hear these guys come back real hard. No, I know exactly who I am. Right. Like what your words are worth nothing. compared to my words. - Yeah. - And that's the champion's mentality. - Yeah. - I've built my words. Your words are worth nothing. - Yeah. - It's the old. - I heard from Tony Robbins, as I'm just gonna give him credit, he says you get rewarded in public for what you've spent thousands of hours practicing in private. - Yeah. - And that's it. - Like truly, ask yourself, why would someone else's voice be worth more than yours? You're giving more, what you're saying is, their opinion's worth more than yours. It's dangerous, right? Like when you seek that affirmation, like think about what you're seeking. You must know more about me than I know about myself. - Right. - And when it's the opposite, how do you think you feel about affirmation? Like this is, I don't want that. It's worthless to me. I know way more about me than you do. - Yeah, and I wanna highlight that because you could take that what you just said from a place of pride, but the very first thing you said was truth, is to seek truth and truth is the word of God. So everything that you think and you know about yourself is coming from a place of knowing your father. - Yeah, it's, you're right. It certainly can become prideful. It's a man in the arena mentality. - Yeah, for sure. - You've never tasted the blood in the sand. - Right. - You know nothing, right? I've been in this arena. I know that, well, I know my words are at least worth more than yours. Now, the man in the arena will give credit, will give credence to the words of another man in the arena. And we could talk about semantics there, but really this is just the dynamic of evidence versus affirmation. And if you give more weight to affirmation, you're taking away the strength of your own voice. - Yeah, very good. - Okay, so you know what's number four? - Last one here is thoughts versus feelings. Okay, do you see? You can do this, but most of the time where feelings come from is something happens to you and it evokes a feeling. And you can't, I'm not saying that it's impossible that you can sit, you know, like you can go sit in the sauna by yourself, quiet, nothing's happening to you. You're not experiencing anything and you put yourself through an experience that creates a feeling. But most of the time, right, if you think about like the strongest feelings you've ever felt, the first time you ever felt that feeling, it was something from the external, right? And so feelings are sparked from something that's happening around you. Thoughts come from inward, right? Most of the time, thoughts don't come, like they're not sparked from something on the outside, it is this internal process. And so this is, it's a different form of internal voice versus external voice. There's the battle between your thinking, which think like my feelings are not who I am, my thoughts are who I am. It's not as a man feeleth. It's as a man thinketh. As a man thinketh is so easy. Your as a man feeleth will take you away from your thoughts. And so it's really is the battle between your thoughts and your feelings. And you have to have a strong enough mental identity, a strong enough thought identity that when you get counterpoint, counterpoint feelings that your thoughts have more weight to overcome those feelings. And whenever you get angry and you lash out, your feelings overcame your thoughts. Your thoughts know I should not lash out an anger. Your thoughts know what is right. Yeah, right. I don't feel my way through scripture, right? And Romans chapter 12 verse two, doesn't say let your feelings be transformed. It says let your thinking be transformed. Correct. Now there's a big part of me that I think, well, your feelings are revealing your thoughts. 'Cause when something happens, and like you said, you lash out an anger, something in your thinking was incorrect there. But what you're talking about here, what you're talking about is the thoughts that materialize over time and that grow and solidify as opposed to like your feelings screaming at you in the moment. Like, feelings come at you and go, oh baby, listen, you've got to do this now. When you get the desire to sin, is it a feeling or is it a thought? Right. Yeah, I would say it's probably more a feeling. Most of the time it's a feeling. Yeah. And how do you overcome? Right. How do you overcome that temptation to sin? Right. It is an internal thought process. Now that is a dialogue with the Holy Spirit. That's a dialogue with yourself. It's a dialogue with God. But when I am tempted to sin, it is my internal words that take me away from that. What did Jesus do when He was tempted? He quoted scripture. Yeah, very good. Right. He did some good. It was word and thought that overcomes the feeling of temptation. That's so good. And that sets internal versus external. Yeah, very good, gee. I mean, that really is. It's principle overcome comfort. I mean, one of the things I was thinking about is it's logic over rationale, which we touched on briefly. And I want to quickly-- People think those are similar, but cover it. Yeah, logic is truth-based. And from our man know-- Logic is math. Right. Yeah, it's-- Listen, from the Webster, logic is the art of using reason well in our inquiries after truth. It's as stupid, it's as stupid as the crap we've heard in recent years of saying math is racist. (laughs) I guess. Yes, that's rationale. Right. That's people saying, "Well, I feel like," because I see this and this happens, and I feel like that's this. Yeah, because rationale is opinion-based. It's explaining why you did something. It's a detail with reasons. So people will say, "Well, this is-- it was logical. I had to do this because of that." And you go, "Well, hang on a minute. What you're doing is you're basically-- you're explaining why you did something." That's not what you did was not necessarily based on truth. And that was the difference between logic. Logic is truth-based. Right. It works no matter what. It's like what you said. It's principles over pressure. And so your rationale is you just go like, "Well, this is why." Just because you had a good reason why. Like, "Well, I ran that red light because I needed to get my son someplace. Will you rear-ended somebody and kill someone? Will you, but I didn't mean to. Will your rationale was solid, but your logic was not." Right. And so it doesn't matter what you intended to do. And that's where this can be hard, but that's what we're saying. We're saying thoughts and we're feeling. So these are all of these. These are the battles where you're-- and they're similar, but they happen on different battlefields. These are all the battles of where you're inside has to be stronger than your outside to really overcome, to really walk in greatness in life, is that you must stand on truth and truth. There's no amount of pressure that can break truth. It cannot be broken. That's what truth is. Endurance versus results. This is understanding of the more-- like the harder it gets. They're like rocky superpower is how hard he can get hit. Right. And he realizes like, this is how I win. I just continue to persevere. I just continue to keep going. This is run your race. Run the race that has been set out for you. This is the path that life has put you on. It didn't say win every race. It said, run your race. Endure. Persevere. That is, as James chapter one says, like how you achieve maturity and greatness in life that you continue to endure, that you continue to persevere. You have to win the battle of evidence versus affirmation that it's giving more strength to your voice versus the strength of the audience. It's being the message versus listening to the audience. It's caring more about what you say than about what others say. And that's-- it's the danger. It's the danger of affirmation. The more you prize them for affirmation, the more you're taking away weight from the power of your own voice. And then the last one is thoughts versus feelings. Understand, like feelings is where temptations come from. Feeling is like the-- like feelings happen through your biology. Like, oh, I'm tired. Oh, I'm feeling weak. Oh, I'm hungry. All these things, they turn into feelings. They don't turn into a thought. Think about hunger. Is it a feeling or is it a thought? When you get hungry, there's not a data line in your brain that says, need 700 calories. It turns into a desire. And it is only through your thoughts that you process that feeling and say, here's what I'm supposed to do with that. So win these battles internally so you can win the battles that God put you on the Earth to fight. Thank you very much for listening, guys. Remember to share, like, subscribe. Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. Identity is tested by how well it withstands external pressure, not by how strong it appears initially.
  2. The concept of "inside-out living" means what's within you (character, beliefs) should influence your environment, not the other way around.
  3. A strong identity precedes purpose; knowing who you are allows you to fulfill your journey.
  4. Jesus' own development shows that identity formation is a process, even for the divine.
  5. The analogy of an apple tree illustrates that fruit (actions/results) reveals true identity, regardless of external voices.

Summary:

" The hosts argue that the quality of one's identity is revealed under pressure—when life challenges you, your true self emerges.

FAQs

The main theme is 'inside out living,' which emphasizes that a strong identity comes from having what's inside you be stronger than what's outside, allowing you to influence your environment rather than being changed by it.

The quote 'It's not how hard you hit, but how hard you can get hit' illustrates that the quality of your identity is tested by challenges, showing whether your self-concept is resilient or fragile.

Inside out living means that your internal identity and character are strong enough to shape your external circumstances, rather than letting external pressures change you.

Osmosis is used as a metaphor: if what's inside you is stronger than your environment, you influence it; if not, the environment changes you, testing the strength of your identity.

Identity precedes purpose because knowing who you are provides the foundation for understanding what you're meant to do; seeking purpose without identity leads to confusion.

Jesus had a process of identity formation, learning obedience through suffering and understanding his role through scripture and his mother's stories, showing that even he grew into his identity.
