In this podcast episode, host Jason Graystone reflects on the nature of freedom and contentment, challenging the common pursuit of endless goals driven by societal and social media pressures. He shares his personal journey from chasing financial freedom in his 20s to realizing that true fulfillment comes from defining "enough" and appreciating simplicity. Graystone breaks down freedom into three components: freedom of mind (peace and self-ownership), freedom of movement (control over time and tasks), and freedom of money (assets covering expenses). He notes that many people, even after achieving financial success, still feel behind because they let goalposts shift, often mistaking status for freedom. A pivotal moment for him was realizing he would be happy if his life stayed the same for years—a sign of contentment. He emphasizes that financial freedom is mathematically simple, not about endless growth, and that the highest success is a quiet, calm life where nothing feels forced. Graystone encourages listeners to reflect on their own definition of "enough," separate from external influences, and to stop chasing in order to start living.

You're going to get the most from this podcast listening to at least the first 10, 20 episodes in order. But if you're not new, welcome back. I had a bit of a realization over the last few months. Not a realization that I wasn't aware about but it kind of just reaffirmed everything that I was feeling and it kind of, yeah, I was just sitting there. I haven't really done much this year in terms of like development, let's say, other than on my body. I've done a big, got a big fitness goal and I was kind of just sitting in my garden and was just thinking about, you know, what we had and what we built and investments and the businesses and the house and the routine that I've got and everything. And we were talking about like, what are we chasing? What would I chase now? Because in my 20s, a lot of that was clear. I was chasing freedom. I had lots of things that I needed to do in order to chase the goal of freedom and security and financial freedom and all the rest of it. And I didn't want to be dependent on anyone and I didn't want to have to ask permission to live my life and that back then, you know, that kind of force that drive that drove a lot of the decisions that I made back then. Learning how to invest, learning how to trade, learning how to build a business, you know, how to save aggressively and how to build leveraged income streams and how to. Be really mentally clear and mentally free so that I didn't have any distractions or people pulling me different directions. But the interesting thing about goals that I find is that they move or at least we let them move, right? And that's what I want to talk about in this podcast today because a lot of people listening to this podcast are doing well. You know, they're earning good money, they've got good businesses, they've got opportunities, but there's this kind of strange thing that happens when people get to that point where they still feel like they're behind. I talk to people all the time, feel like they're behind, feel like they're not quite doing enough. And I see it all the time. Someone earns 40k, they think, just get to 100k and everything's going to change. Then they get to 100k and suddenly the number becomes 150k, 120k, 250k, 500k or a million. Or whatever it might be. And what's really interesting is the feeling doesn't change, you know, and the pressure just stays exactly the same. And it's because you've got these quiet goal posts that keep moving and you don't actually notice why they're moving. Right? So when I first started thinking about financial freedom, I had personally had a very, very simple definition. I've spoke about this many, many times before, but laid out, you know, it's really three things. It's freedom of mind, freedom of movement and freedom of money. Okay? And if you look at those things carefully, they're actually quite modest goals. Freedom of mind just means peace. You know, you're not constantly stressed. You get to sleep. You know, you're not constantly proving something, trying to please an appease someone. You're not constantly chasing approval. Right? And you're not letting gremlins or skeletons in your closet drag, you know, that you're dragging through time, have guilt over you or shame over you. Right? And you're owning yourself and you're owning things that happen to you and you're a driver. You're a, you're not a passenger. You're in control of your destiny. And in freedom of movement just means control over your time and space. Right? So you decide where you are. You decide when you work, you decide when you stop, you decide how your calendar is filled. And ideally, you're making a conscious effort to prioritize things in your calendar that you're good at and you love doing. And everything else, you're working on delegating, systemizing, optimizing and getting out of the way or, you know, outsourcing to someone who can do the things that you don't love doing and you're not good at. And then freedom of money is simply like your life's funded, right? So if you need to stop, you can. So how much time you can buy into the future, your life works, whether you work or not. And that's it. Right? But if, but realistically, you're going to want to do stuff. Okay? And that's, that's the whole thing. I always accepted that. I would always want to be up to something. Whether that's just tinkering in my garden or making my, you know, salads as I do now, my lunch and meal prep and all that kind of stuff or walking or or working on exciting projects or getting your hands dirty some other way, right? And you're going to want to be up to something, but it's the choice to stop. That's what the money provides. But somewhere along the line, social media or society, they've turned freedom into something else from what I've seen. They've turned it into status. And there's all these people flaunting online, promoting things, making these bold statements and claims that are clearly rubbish, you know, a lot of them. But everyone feels like they're not doing enough because you wake up every morning, you look at other looking on social media and you feel like you're behind, you know, you feel like everyone's doing better than you. And it's not true. So I remember there was a moment that I quite clearly remember this moment when I was sitting in my garden just outside the studio that we've, we've had built in the garden. And it was really quiet. I didn't have any meetings, didn't have any deadlines, there was nothing urgent on the calendar, you know, I was just watching the fish in the pond. And I thought to myself, if my life stayed like this for the next 10 years, 20 years, I'd actually be perfectly happy. Now think about that for a second, because most people can't say that. Most people feel like they're chasing something. They're still trying to get somewhere, they're still trying to prove something. And then when that realization, like hit me personally, something changed inside me that removed any urgency that I might have had, you know, any urgency just disappeared. Okay, ambition's still there. I'm still a very ambitious person. I'm still on a mission. Okay. And I'm on a mission to help people, which is why I do this podcast. And just as a byproduct of doing that mission that I'm good at and I love doing. Right. So it doesn't feel like work. I will inevitably unlock different milestones and goals and all that kind of stuff in terms of social leadership and following and opportunities and, you know, all that kind of stuff. But when you, when you realize that you haven't got anything to prove, the pressure disappears. It really does. So freedom of the mind is probably the most overlooked one because people assume money fixes everything, but money doesn't fix a restless mind. I can promise you that I know I work with lots of people. I've seen lots of people very, very stressed. They got loads of money. All right. You can earn 10 million pounds and still wake up feeling like you're behind. So freedom comes from something much, much simpler. And that is just clarity of thought. A lot of people when they have goals or they have, you know, they think about what they would love to do or their purpose and all this kind of stuff. Usually it's what other people want them to do. And when they give themselves like a little bit of time to think about it, they're thinking about like fantasies, Disney films and all this kind of stuff. Actually, your purpose, your, you know, your true best life, your most desirable life is the mundane monotony and simplicity in your soul. It is very, very monotonous. It's mundane. Right. And it is much closer under your nose than you think. It's not this big flipping, you know, you're slaying dragons and all this kind of stuff. It's much, much simpler than that. And because you're exposing yourself to other people that look like this, laying dragons, you then say, well, that should be mine. But it's not. You know what matters. Deep down and you know what doesn't matter. So you stop giving your energy to things are not aligned with your life and what actually matters. one of the best exercises
I did was ask myself like what actually improves my life not what improves my status or improves my reputation but my life what improves my life and the list was very very small. It was family, security, health, right, interesting work, peaceful time, empty calendars, right, and that was pretty much it. Everything else was was just optional. So movement freedom is something that people underestimate as well. People think freedom means luxury travel, right, but that's not really it. Movement freedom just means you're not locked in. You know, you can say yes when you want and more importantly, you can say no when you want and you can decide when you take a week off and you can decide to work from somewhere else in the world and you can decide to slow down or speed up or whatever and ultimately you decide what tasks, what daily things feel your calendar, okay, and those things should be inspiring. They should feel like you want to do them, you're good at them, you love doing them and when you have that life feels completely different. You don't actually chase financial freedom at that point and a lot of people can get to that point quicker than they can achieve financial freedom, right. So as much you know, something you should really start working on is optimizing your mobility freedom by figuring out what activities you would love to do that are an extension of you that you can monetize that can pay you and then focus on doing the tasks that you're good at and love doing in that in that field and that is it. And then a financial freedom is where most people focus, right. But as I say, ironically, it's one of it's the simplest one to solve, okay, your life costs a certain amount to run. Let's say someone spends four grand a month if their assets produce four grand a month, they're financially free. That's it. It's not complicated and it's actually the money freedom is the one that you can guarantee. It's definite. It's like math, right. So you follow a formula, you invest X amount and you do all the things that I've been over in episodes one to 10 in this podcast, you will definitely become financially free. It's not a not if, okay, and it's not complicated. But most people don't aim for that. They don't aim for the simple thing. They aim for endless growth. I met two entrepreneurs at a business event the other day and they just talked business and hustle constantly. And I just saw, you know, these guys are in their fulties and I just thought, you're missing a point. You know, you are not happy. You're not happy. And they're chased, chased, chased, chased, chased. They don't know what they're chasing for. And eventually, you know, the old train derails, money's all over the floor, relationships all over the floor. The health's all over the floor. And they think I should have just got off on that station back there or it looked lovely. You know, but you can't get contentment in hindsight. You have to know when enough is enough before you get there. That's how you become content. So there's a version of about success that doesn't really get talked about much on social media. And the reason it doesn't is because it's not flash. It's not, um, Larry, not loud. It doesn't look impressive on Instagram. But it's the, it's actually the highest form of success. And that is a quiet life. Your mind is calm. Your money is working. Your time is your own. Your calendar is your own. And nothing that you're doing in your life feels forced. So here's something to think about, right? When you think about your goals, maybe not think about them in terms of like, what do I need that's more? You know, what if the goal wasn't more? What if the goal was enough? Because when you reach enough, you stop chasing life and you start appreciating it and you start living it. Now I appreciate that there's two levels, right? You're even going to be on your way to where you want to be or you're, or you're missing where you are and you're already there. And enough is enough, but you just haven't recognized it. So have a think about this. Just dwell on this for a bit. You know, am I there? Am I missing the point? You know, or what am I chasing for? And just stop and ask yourself these questions, you know, and start living the life. What does enough actually look like for me? Not what social media says, not what society says, no, my mom and dad say, but what you say, what you say is enough. Because when you define enough, you're much closer to freedom than you realize. I can promise you that. So I hope you got something from this. I would love you to reach out to me and DM me and let me know what you thought about this. Was it thought provoking? Did it give you a little bit of inspiration? Did you gleam anything from it? Was there, did you sit with it and meditate on it? Think on it? You know, did you come up with anything? I would love your feedback. And until next week, by the way, this podcast is now back in full flow every week. So I appreciate if you're still listening, following the little break that I had. But we are back. And until next week, take care. Have a great rest of your day, one weekend. And I'll see you then. For news on all future events and updates, go to jasongrastone.com.
