The biggest moves yet to be made this NHL offseason
151m 14s
The host of "What Chaos?" opens the episode by expressing personal unease before going live, citing a comment that made him feel nervous—an unusual reaction given the show’s typically relaxed tone. He acknowledges the pressure of hosting, comparing it to his own preparation and emotional investment, and emphasizes that the show’s value lies not just in hockey but in offering fresh perspectives, especially from a near-60-year-old viewpoint. The discussion expands to include major sports topics: the NHL’s potential expansion into Texas, MLB’s controversial trade involving Tarik Skubal, and the growing imbalance in baseball due to massive spending by teams like the Dodgers. The host criticizes the current state of baseball, arguing that it’s become uncompetitive and predictable, with the top teams having near-guaranteed wins and smaller-market teams struggling. He highlights how such financial disparities threaten the sport’s long-term sustainability and fan engagement. The conversation also touches on broader issues of fairness in sports, such as the lack of competitive balance and the overuse of no-trade clauses. Ultimately, the hosts advocate for structural reforms—like salary caps and reformed player movement rules—to create a more balanced, sustainable, and exciting league environment. The episode ends with a strong endorsement of underdog teams like the Boston Red Sox, whose resilience and potential are seen as a contrast to the dominant, corporate-driven models in professional sports.

I got to address something off the top here.
Before we went live, you said,
"Pete, I just got to tell you, you make me nervous,"
which is a horrible thing for me to hear.
I think this is the second time I've ever had to host "What Chaos?"
and the other time was with Jeff Merrick,
and he never said anything like that to me right before we go live.
It really threw me off.
So it shakes your cage a little bit.
I get it, Pete, but when you look at DJs,
I don't know what it is about DJs.
It's this chill vibe.
I don't know if it's his music background.
You just bring the professionalism of the chaos up just a notch,
and the expectations become higher, the bar is higher,
and the level of the guest performance needs to match that level of energy.
So I feel a little bit more pressure.
You saw my prep this morning.
Dude, I had 50 papers printed out on my desk.
I've been studying for hours.
Pete, I just turned on the computer.
Excuse me, DJ, I just turned it on and said, "Let's go."
So I hope I bring some energy
and a good enough content to help you, Pete,
get through this next 30 minutes, two hours.
I don't know.
It's definitely not going to be 30 minutes.
We can be honest here.
Certainly, we've never done a 30-minute episode.
That's fair.
But I get where you're coming from
because as the guy who just does a little research,
just shows up and kind of gets talked to,
it's weird to be thrown off.
I don't like hosting.
I don't like having any sort of responsibility whatsoever.
So I definitely understand that probably comes through
from my end, too, where I'm a little uneasy.
But I certainly didn't want to hear like,
"Hey, Pete, you make me nervous.
All right, let's go live."
There we go.
But, Pete, here it is.
I trust you to drive this bus.
And ultimately, what makes what chaos so special?
We're just talking.
Dude, we could sit there without people listening in
and have the same conversation.
So I'm becoming more calm.
I'm becoming more calm already
because I know we're just going to talk.
And I know we're going to talk about things other than hockey.
I know I'm here for hockey.
But I'm also here for a perspective that you guys just don't have.
I'm nearly 60, dude.
And things are different when you're 60,
whether it's movies, music, concerts, even hockey.
Your outlook changes on all of this.
So I think I get nervous partly because I don't fit.
Like, I'm trying to be chaotic in the chaos
because I love you guys that much
that I want to bring some chaos as well.
So I'm excited.
The topics on this show are fucking fantastic.
I'm not kidding.
Like, this is fun.
I'm excited to talk about this.
Same.
And if all else fails, we do have a steadying presence here.
And that is Sean DePaz.
Sean, how are you?
I'm all right.
The Boston Red Sox, the greatest team in professional sports history.
So I don't get much better than that.
I put it on my Instagram story this morning.
The Boston Red Sox turned to the Buffalo Sabres.
My life fucking rocks.
The Red Sox are maybe like two wins away
from making me act like I've been here all along.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, I was there before anybody else.
I'll say I was there before you.
It took you slightly longer to get back on board.
But I mean, they're what?
Like 30 and five over the last whatever.
Like, it's fucking it's insane.
It is.
It is quite literally like they were the worst team in the American League.
And now they are the best over the last handful of months.
It is so Buffalo Sabres ask which.
If this was a big trade deadline to big trade deadline with Ali Rutschman.
I definitely want to talk a little MLB trade deadline is as well as some of the other stuff that I missed on my honeymoon.
Why do you want to do today on the show?
And then we can just kind of get to it today on the show.
Since it's a it's a me show.
I think that I can kind of just lead into it and say these are the topics that is my show.
The topics that I want to talk about.
So we're going to lead off with a manual.
Labor that I made Ellen do on our honeymoon.
It's a staple of our relationship.
She didn't get a break in Hawaii.
She was doing all that manual labor.
So we'll get into that and some of the other honeymoon updates.
We'll talk about what's left to this offseason.
PD came came to me with a not only was doing his prep this morning prep yesterday.
It was like, here's a list of things that I think that we can talk about tomorrow.
And I think at the top of that list was Larkin and Hellebuck.
And it feels like a good day to touch on that stuff.
Because there are a few sort of recent updates that are worth hitting or non updates.
I guess you could say in some cases.
We got a lone star showdown because it looks like the NHL expansion is keying in on Texas.
We just don't know which city yet.
So we'll talk about that.
And then finally, heroes are zeros.
We got pop culture PD here.
We're going to talk a little state of Marvel state of superheroes.
And what you think about all that?
That sounds like an action movie.
Sounds like an action packed show.
And I don't I don't know for those listening from Arizona where I am located currently.
And the NHL talk talking about Houston and Austin.
Don't fear.
I will bring up Arizona as well as the quiet, silent third party in this in this NHL expansion future.
I will say, too, if you noticed the the picture on the today on the show was CM Punk in a Cubs jersey because this is now a wrestling and a baseball podcast.
It's a little Minnesota North Stars talk for you, Pete.
Yeah, let's let's go.
Let's bring them back.
Wait, that's what broke my heart is when the North Stars left.
I can't root for the wild, but the North Stars so sad.
If you might be might be putting CM Punk on a little bit of fraud watch or behavior grade watch based off of what he did at SummerSlam.
That'll be later in the show, I think.
Can you believe it now, dude?
I do think I watch SummerSlam.
No.
See, I watch a little bit.
I know what I don't watch.
I mean, I don't watch wrestling, but I caught that because it was hockey related.
Yeah.
So, OK.
Yeah.
I caught that on my timeline.
Yeah.
Back from Hawaii.
The honeymoon was amazing.
Petey, you said you've been to Hawaii once, right?
Yeah.
I went for a work thing about like 30 years ago.
I was drunk most of the time.
I just don't was sunny.
The water was great.
It was a work conference way before my hockey career.
And I it was nice.
It's fine.
Fine.
I went to the beach.
I went in the water and I got really drunk.
So it was fun.
Yeah, good.
But I can do that anywhere.
I'll tell you what, like upset of the century.
I didn't get drunk like at all on my honeymoon and like drank steadily throughout.
But like you just didn't get that crazy.
I think maybe it was like the sun, maybe just because we were doing stuff all the time.
But like we just had a great time.
We ate like animals.
There was boats, excursions.
We did road to Hana in Maui.
Like it was all incredible and like it probably the best trip I've ever been on.
Ellen Ellen cried like as we were leaving, cried when we landed, cried the first day
back home.
It could have been all the manual labor that I made her do while we were there.
But it was a unbelievable honeymoon.
10 out of 10.
So highest grades possible for Hawaii.
I'd never been.
Like I said that I was never going to go unless I went on my honeymoon just because the travel was so daunting.
The experience was so good.
Like I want to go back to Hawaii next week.
So I will absolutely be back.
We did like five days in Kauai and five days in Maui.
Both were like 10 out of 10s in their own regards.
Kauai was more like lush, more Jurassic Parky.
And Maui was we were on like an incredible resort.
And big time upgrade.
And we had a great weekend for the couple.
I don't know if it was just because like we were on our honeymoon or whatever, but like we got massively upgraded.
And it was we were living a life of luxury for five days.
And now we're back in squalor.
But a couple of things, Pete.
One, I think that's outstanding.
Had a good time.
And being present and not drunk for everything honestly makes the vacation better.
Clearly.
And we can talk about alcohol later.
But but clearly that's great.
Does this spark the bug?
Because there are so many places I would like to go.
I'd love to go to Italy.
I'd like to go to see all of Italy.
I'd love to go to see all of the UK and do all of those things.
But you brought it up.
That plane ride.
Dude, there's like that stops me.
It just it's like I'm not sitting on a plane for 12, 14.
I'm not.
So I'll drive up to Sedona in an hour and a half.
I think that's been the barrier.
You're in Arizona.
The plane ride's not 12 hours for you.
I'm from Boston and it was a combined I think like 12 hours.
Oh, not to Hawaii.
Hawaii is.
Hawaii I can be there in eight hours.
I get it.
Just jump over it.
go see if i want to go to italy or and get some really good food like i i that's no i think i i
have such high anxiety i don't know what i would do like i honest to god i better get really really
high before i get on and buy away gummies way better than alcohol if we get into that later but
that's the only way i can make that flight once i land i i'd love to see all these sites and all the
history and all the food i would love it i know my wife would love it i just don't think i can get
there and so i i don't know we we work on travel or we work on some way to sleep through that so
kudos to you for making it from boston you go to la first is that where you go uh seattle uh and
then on the way back portland so it was like it was pretty split down the middle it was it was
nice but i'll tell you what legs want to hear something crazy i didn't hit a single screen
on any of the four flights damn yeah it's unbelievable to me too i
downloaded
a bunch of movies and tv shows didn't do a single one of them uh i slept in three of the four
flights which is wow upset of the century i never sleep on planes maybe it was like the weird hours
that we took and then i read on the fourth so zero screens all the way to hawaii like a book like a
real paper book like real paper book you wanna you wanna hear a real cute story that reminded me of
my best friend whose wedding i was at was um uh a few weeks ago he's currently on his honeymoon in
australia and
the reason they're in australia is because they met at syracuse in college uh they were
both my friends the bride shout out lauren she was set to go on uh to study abroad in australia
like right as they started dating and you know they had a little conversation she opted
like shortly after they started dating to forego going abroad so she could stay home with my best
friend ty and in when they had that conversation ty told her this is would have been back in like
2018 it's like when we get married i'll take you to australia for your honeymoon and now they're
in australia on their honeymoon and when they i was like damn that rocks ty go crazy
what a baller i know i'm like i was like this guy rocks that's my best friend look at him go
what an absolute baller move uh i love that chad's asking book the books that i read on the honeymoon
i brought three books on the honeymoon which ellen kind of scoffed at laughed at me i finished all
three books
yeah uh i read the first dungeon carl dungeon crawler carl uh i read the second dungeon
crawler carl and then i read uh the last picture show by larry mcmurtry uh can i ask what those
first two books are about pete like what is yeah dungeon crawler carl is like the hardest dragons
in the world right now it's not dragons it's basically like a post-apocalyptic okay reality show
video game sort of hybrid where the world ends and this guy and his cat basically
go into like this underworld where it's a reality show hunger game style and like last
person alive like wins i guess and it's very weird it's very stupid but it is also
extremely entertaining and extremely easy to read so i flew through the first few of those
incredible and that's what that's what and that's what we i know we argue about music we argue about
movies tvs and books and and i won't read anything with a dragon in it sorry game of thrones like
dude don't get it not reading it of no chance apocalyptic i could probably do but thank
goodness there are writers that do different things i i've got a good friend leah you know
who from the old ph and x days reading some i don't even know what called fantasy romance
like love stories with ogres and dragons and fairies dude what the hell is that i read a
straight up suspense somebody gets killed they say i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know
i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know they solve it that's my
book like that's the book i want to read and and i thank goodness we have other authors i'm not
saying yours is wrong i'm just saying dude can't do it and and and the chat is right kindle's the
way to go if you're going to carry three books on a plane buddy kindle i can't read physical media
yeah seriously i'm a big physical media guy same with newspaper i'd much rather read if
like i so very much wish i could get like a a copy of the buffalo news delivered to my
door every day i would i'd be eating that up uh it's funny because somebody in the chat said well
pete's reading ellen's doing manual labor ellen we also brought a book and it's it sounds like your
nightmare pd because it is uh it's like dra it's like horny dragon book uh i think it's called the
fourth wing and she's reading like horny dragon book and those are popular as hell right now i
don't get it i don't but that's okay i'm not supposed to get it i don't think 58 year old
men are their target audience for for love dragon books i just don't think that they are
i have a bunch of i saved my dragons for tv and the house of the dragon has been awesome
so far this season i have a bunch of like literary classics within arm's reach of me i have like the
mount count of monte cristo shakespeare's taming of the shrew uh the color purple all of my old
high school books that i just have on a bookshelf to make me look interesting oh yeah brother
syracuse education paying off no that's a good old saint francis high school college preparatory
college preparatory school um all right so over the past couple weeks i've missed some big sports
the number one one that i was most mad about was lebron going to the 76ers i was on a boat nice
little sail in hawaii with the best views you've ever seen in your life and all i could
think about was how badly i wish that i could hop on what chaos to talk about lebron going to the
76ers and mainly because of the element that came out at some point last week that he's he might be
commuting every day from new york city via helicopter to philly via hello first of all
yeah i know we can't lose another goat braun we can't lose another goat there's famously never
been anybody in the nba an all-time nba great who's ever had a bad experience on a helicopter
to do a daily commute via helicopter but also i just think it should be like illegal to a certain
extent for an athlete to not live in the city in which they play because like maybe this is a
old man yells at cloud boomer take of mine but like such a big part of the sports experience
is the community aspect and if the athlete is not a part of the community in which they play and and
like i'm willing to be pretty flexible on that like if you play for the new jersey devils you
can live in new york city because it's in the tri-state area or something like anything that's
kind of close and i know new york and philly aren't that far apart but they are certainly not the same
fucking market and if you're playing in philly i think that you should live in philly i think that
you should embrace philly i think that you should at least at the very least be a part of the
community and be a resident of philadelphia it will bother me to no end if lebron is living in new york
city and flying to every practice and every game am i alone in this no and here's the funny thing
though but and you go to the philadelphia flyers and i know a lot of the flyers live in new jersey
but we're talking about just across the border we're talking about a short car ride not a
helicopter but your sense of community i think is so important in sports because that's all you have
anymore is players change so often free agency trades loyalty to teams have completely disappeared
so be loyal to my city for right now i'm
okay with right now and in hockey there are so many players in arizona dude they go away in the
summertime they go to halifax or moose job yeah fine and in major league baseball it's a little
bit different because you play 28 out of 30 days and i know most people have homes in different
places but when when you're off you're in your city i i think that's all we have left to sports
fans that's it like this is you better embrace phoenix when you're in phoenix embrace philadelphia
when you're in philadelphia it's so important to those fans that are shelling out huge
humongous amounts of money to to to have you part of their community hey we have lebron like he he's
part of this but to say like dude i'm just gonna i don't really like your community i don't want to
live there i'm just gonna jet in like that's i'm not so sure like i i i'm with you pete like tell
me you're part of this community let me let me embrace you and my city while i root for you into
nothingness i have two big takes the first being lebron would have been a nick if they didn't win
the nba championship i think like i think he just wanted to be in new york and b
i feel like from what i've like seen or whatever like most knicks don't live in new york city like
they i'm pretty sure they practice slightly upstate like outside of the city and a lot of
them will live kind of in between i don't think a lot of the players are like i don't know where
exactly in new york i don't know if he's about to have like a penthouse in manhattan or something
like that but like i i like i don't know like he's damn near 50 years old what do you why do you want
to live in new york city for that seems like way too much going on too far though i love sean's
taking in lebron's too old to live in new york yeah you're 20 if this was like if this
was you know fresh out of high school braun i'd be like yeah man go live in new york you like that's
yeah you're young i mean i guess he probably still had savannah around at that point so it's
not like he's out going he's out partying but what do you need like you need to be in philly more than
you need to be in new york so if you're that if you're that okay with helicoptering then helicopter
to new york anytime you need to be in the city like i don't know are you going to bart like what
are you what do you what's in new york for you that you need it so bad on like a day-to-day
basis on your off days or just like pete said petey said live there in the off season it makes
no sense to me i'm abroad or if you got a day off if you got a day off
you got a day off fly home go then you could go but hey i'm here for the next two weeks we're
gonna stay in philly for the two weeks i got i got a little place here a little condo by the
right by the facility everything's great hey we got we got a day off you know what i think i'm
gonna fly to new york okay i don't think anybody would begrudge that but to think that you're going
back and forth first of all the wear and tear on your body going back and forth i dude wear and
tear on helicopters that's a whole nother story but but but that's going to take it's time it's
time you're not chilling it's time you're not your your apartment with your feet up man i i
don't know i i don't love it but but then again as it's been well documented not a huge basketball
guy turns out hockey and basketball happen at the same time and i don't have that much bandwidth to
keep track of both until the playoffs so really this is something that come october november i
just don't care there's a lot of second family accusations and now i'm thinking about like uh
that was something that drake accused kendrick of during their beef in one of their songs like
he literally was like you have an apartment in new york
you don't love your wife so and and then braun famously was at the pop out with kendrick like
i don't know none of this makes sense lebron you just have questions to answer
yeah it's all weird and just like in a time where i feel like sports is getting
like more and more like corporatized and like private equity and it feels like we're kind of
losing the plot on what sports are supposed to be and what they're supposed to mean to people
and like who athletes are supposed to be to their sports teams this feels like very
hired assassinate to me i'm like obviously everybody's kind of viewing that for what it is
it's lebron's last stop and uh but like at least pretend at least pretend and if he pulls out any
of like this is our city like philadelphia-based i am ready in the mentions to be like you don't
even live there bro you don't get to do that have we consider that he's just doing this to
like aura farm because we're gonna get like he's gonna do like the jerry jones he's gonna land
outside of the arena and then there's gonna be shots of him like with his go-yard bag
walking off the off the helicopter in slow motion and stuff like he's bob stauffer
i think he might just be doing it because he's lebron james and he wants to do he wants to look
like he's doing cool yeah maybe if i was his teammates i'd be like what the dude
like i know he's lebron and like what are you gonna say if you're a sixers teammate
but i'd be like dude you're how you think jaylen brown helicopter every day yeah who do you think
like jaylen brown's probably pissed he's probably pissed because like of the the the like uh the oil
brown's probably pissed for a lot of reasons yeah true true but he was like i'm i'm gonna be the man
and because certainly not my friend yeah because i don't know basketball so there's two things one
does this make them an automatic contender right now to win an nba championship and two it does the
pay cut from 53 million dollar to eight million dollar contract over two years so he's making
four million bucks does that make any difference in what you think of his sports loyalty or or his
decision to join this team like if you see conor mcdavid go to the toronto maple leafs for for a
league minimum you're like dude what that like that's surprising to me so that part of it as a
takeaway is like oh okay he's willing to take way less just to be a part of a winner like is this
team that close uh yeah like lebron has so much money to like i don't even care about like what
he's getting paid because he just has so much money and will continue to have so much money
for the rest of time that like that salary thing doesn't really i just think that he's he's kind of
he's just ring chasing and they i think they're certainly pretty close i am famously pro ring
chaser kevin rant's one of my favorite players if not my favorite player ever
um so yeah i mean i think it's clearly she just wants to win and like yeah i would say on paper
they probably have the best starting lineup in the league now um so only gets you so far like
the knicks i still would say are the next one the championships or they're still the team to beat but
um yeah i also like this all reminded me the chest started bringing it up like fifa is going through
it too fifa you talk about like the corporatization and private equity uh infantino
tried to sell stakes in the world cup and all of europe was like if you do that we're not coming
to the world cup anymore and now inventino is going to get thrown out of fifa for it because
he's a idiot i mean if anybody is shocked or appalled by fifa's corruptness at this point
in time in 2026 i just have to ask where you've been the most corrupt organization in all of sports
yeah but it's it's just it is funny like and i know we're gonna talk about baseball later like
everything sucks everything sucks money is ruining literally everything we love yep pretty much we
can get to that now because uh the dodgers traded for tarik skubal uh become the first team in the
history of major league baseball to hold both the back-to-back young award winner and the back-to-back
mvp so baseball's ruined like every time there's a big name that's mentioned it's just the dodgers
coming away with them and this one in particular pisses me off to no end because the fucking trade
package that it took to get tarik skubal is just an absolute fucking joke and i'm not going to
pretend to be the biggest mlb prospects guy i don't know anything about mlb prospects at this point in
my life but when i see the return for tarik skubal being three prospects two of which are top 50 in
the mlb and i look a little further and i see that one of these prospects one of these quote-unquote
top 50 prospects is a 27 year old pitcher coming off the bench and he's like i don't want to play
baseball with a 27 year old pitcher coming off of tommy john's surgery what are we talking about here
a tw a 27 year old and i get that like pitchers in major league baseball can be late bloomers
but a 27 year old right-hander coming off of fucking tommy john surgery with
a almost four and a half era in triple-a it's cool i'm glad that that's your fucking pet
on the right-hander coming off of fucking tommy john surgery with a almost four and a half era in triple-a
it's cool i'm glad that that's your fucking pet on the right-hander coming off of fucking tommy john surgery with a almost four and a half era in triple-a it's cool i'm glad that that's your fucking pet
killer return for tarik scoobel one of the best athletes that the detroit tigers have had in
like decades very since maybe probably yeah yeah it's it pete honestly from a guy that's from
minnesota and my twins and i know their ownership is bad i get it we won't even get into that but
from a small market team that just cannot do this you know before the first pitch on opening day
your team doesn't have a chance and and when you go how can this sports sustain itself when you
look in the stands across how many teams are gonna have a hundred losses this year
and they're empty now and it's it's just after july you know just after the trade deadline
stadiums are empty nobody cares nobody has a chance the teams that spend are in the teams
that don't are out like it's just ridiculous to be a baseball fan and of course of course the
dodgers are going to get the number one the number one guy at the trade down of course they are like
it's it's just it's not i i don't want to say it's not fun this is the yankees this is this is by as a
twins fan it's always been the yankees i hate because of their spending like if they don't get
the under control it's going to be over because so many teams just are like okay i won't
spend anything we already have the tv contract i'll make that money i'll make a ton of money
we won't make the playoffs who cares and so i i love baseball i love it it's the soundtrack of my
summers i i really do but you know even the twins i know they're fighting out for a lot of money but
even the twins i know they're fighting out for a lot but they're done like they're done they're
not going to win because the dodgers are the dodgers are just let's just get it over i don't
need to watch the world series this season i can focus on the beginning of the hockey season because
the dodgers are going to win again they need to clean this up and unfortunately baseball fans are
all going to suffer because the idiocracy of the system that we're not going to baseball next year
and it's all because of this and oh what a great gm move what a great package like
really you give me as much money i literally
you give me as much money i literally unlimited money to spend on any player i want
unlimited money to spend on any player i want dude i can do a pretty good job and the management now
dude i can do a pretty good job and the management now if we're all under the same umbrella and the
if we're all under the same umbrella and the
if we're all under the same umbrella and the same rules now i better be good now i better be able
same rules now i better be good now i better be able to judge talent now i'd be able to trade for
to judge talent now i'd be able to trade for
to judge talent now i'd be able to trade for talent now i'd be able to put a roster together
talent now i'd be able to put a roster together
talent now i'd be able to trade for talent now i'd be able to trade for talent now i got unlimited
talent now i got unlimited
talent now i got unlimited purse strings yeah i'll get you a winner
purse strings yeah i'll get you a winner
purse strings yeah i'll get you a winner every single year it's not
every single year it's not
every single year it's not don't pat the gm of the la dodgers on
don't pat the gm of the la dodgers on
don't pat the gm of the la dodgers on the back what a great job like come on
the back what a great job like come on
the back what a great job like come on it's ridiculous this is this makes this
it's ridiculous this is this makes this
it's ridiculous this is this makes this sport almost unwatchable
sport almost unwatchable
sport almost unwatchable i will like i'm very much uh
like uh kind of like a harm reductionist like we need to we just got to acknowledge the reality
that we live in like i give the dodgers all the credit in the world they're doing their job like
they're getting good players they're spending money awesome but like we live in a reality
where like not everybody's doing and i'll say like i know we have a list of like the mlb salaries like
they don't have the highest payroll in the league the mets do and the mets are dog shit
so it's not like spending money guarantees you'll ring but we are at a point where like the money
that the dodger spent damn near guarantees the dodgers the ring like you said i have no interest
in watching a league where it's predictable um and so when this google trade happened i was like
i'm ready for a lockout i need it but isn't so much of the dodgers money deferred does that count
towards the the salary cap i don't fully understand how like how the salaries get um measured but
they are still like the second here's a graphic look they have the second highest payroll in uh
in the league like they they know how to to
to like pick talent they are good at that they at the very least they know how to identify talent
and they know how to like operate their business in a way that they're allowed to do whatever
they're doing right now which is like completely breaking the sport i know that like the tv money
element of it plays into it where like they're allowed to do crazy shit that nobody else can do
because of their
tv deal but like i i will give like them some credit because i know their their their farm
system is really good they're identifying players they're selling players on coming to la like
scooble it pissed me off that scooble said like anybody could have made this trade to get me
fuck off yeah but especially fuck off when the reports were that like he only wanted to go to la
and he was only going to sign in with la once he hit free agency so yeah like other teams could
have given up their top prospects and got you for a half a year but why wouldn't the dodgers just do
that when they could throw out some bullshit package and get you a half a year early but like
i think ultimately here i i'm a huge baseball guy and i have a hard time caring about baseball
particularly major league baseball right now just based off of where the league is how things
operate it just seems like it's not going to work out for me i don't think it's going to work out for
me i don't think it's going to work out for me i don't think it's going to work out for me
it seems like such a broken league such a ridiculous league like i people always say
that the nhl like outsiders say the nhl is the worst run sport of the four major sports and i
just i don't think that that's true anymore like the money is is not there when you compare it to
athletes when you see macklin celebrini sign the the highest aav the biggest contract that's ever
been signed in hockey history at 18.8 it's easy to laugh at like
how that number is dwarfed by so many other sports but like as far as the way that the
league is run i feel like the nhl is in a better place than definitely baseball based off of how
the how weird the money and the salary structure and the competitive balance is off right now
but also like maybe the nba based off of like the quality of the product like nba has so many big
stars but i just feel like the product kind of sucks based off of
teams jacking up threes nobody playing defense and that's just kind of like the new age of the
sport i i don't know like nobody's going to beat the nfl based off of like a business and quality
of play and quality of draw on a weekly basis i feel like the nhl like might be number two
in terms of the leagues in the way that they're run right now am i am i off on that
no you're right a hundred percent dead bag on and a couple things that that that nhl
and ml mlb the difference is you talk about the high spending team and the dodge
what really screws it up are the teams that don't spend any money that are at the very very bottom
spending the gap between top and bottom is over 300 million like that's insanity and if you're a
team like me we're rooting for the twins you don't spend money you don't win in hockey at least you're
forced to you're forced to spend money i can't tell you who's going to make the playoffs this
year but i'm going to tell you the teams are going to be around it are the teams that are
spending to the cap they're the teams they're going to sniff now will their team sneak in below
that of course
but you have to spend the minimum and i think at least you can go okay we're trying to get to the
floor and it brings that closing gap a little bit tighter but you talk about star power the nhl's got
a rule in their cba that you can't give any player 20 a max contract 20 is the most you can pay any
player do you know how many players have made 20 of their team's cap none never happened it's never
happened in the history of the national hockey even when you talk about celebrini you talk about
18 percent of their of the cap space so you're not getting those max contracts because your team
wants to win and if you spend that much money on carol caprizo dude i still need a fourth line
winger in basketball i need five guys that can play yes i better get a six seven and eight but
i need a couple of stars and that can carry a clearly dry saddle mcdavid two of the best
players in the league aren't enough you can't do it with two star players you can't you need a team
and i think that's the other thing that makes the nhl so much better nfl you're right can't
compete we're going to pay our quarterback unlimited money because that's the guy that's
going to do it for us and the teams that don't spend money win because they have young players
under good contracts patrick mahomes in his entry level deal that's why they win their quarterback
their best players are under lower level contracts and i think in the nhl it's at least fair it's at
least fair here's the gap you guys spend to it spend to the cap spend in between there if you
want to get close to winning a cup you better spend to the cap doesn't guarantee it iec toronto
but it's going to get you close
because if you don't spend that cap you're going to be arizona and you're not going to win and
you're going to you're going to have to try to reach the floor by getting a mythical roster
and that's that's what i think the difference in these two sports are i think at least
when you're in hockey and you look at your owner you know what owner that's trying to win
i will say uh like as far as rob manfred's manfred sucks can't stand him uh but i guess
in like defense of mlb like i feel like this happened really fast and like you can only change
the league when it gets to like the cba negotiations so a lot of like a lot is going to be revealed by
what happens like i think we're probably going to miss at like half at least half a season of
baseball like there's i i'd be shocked if they played a full mlb season somehow next year um
that's what i was going to bring up too because i don't think i in my lifetime i don't feel like
we've ever had such a certain lockout on the horizon as we do with baseball right now yeah
i mean because like like obviously all of these teams are owned by billionaires so in
theory they can all spend money but like i don't like part of me is like i i don't think it's it's
on billionaires to make bad business decisions like i i think like i've always been like the
mindset if i was a billionaire i would own i would own a professional sports team as like a leisure
activity like i would do it because i like sports and i want my team to win so i'd be spending money
but like i get whatever and like the the cleveland guardians spend the least they have like a 70 million
dollar payroll this year um and the dodgers have over 330 million dollars but i don't think that
the cleveland guardians can spend that much like that seems unrealistic to me and so like what's
the fucking point they're gonna spend money they're gonna spend another 100 million dollars
just so they can still lose and not like not win a world series so like it has like it structurally
has to be fixed at this point i don't know what's gonna happen like the mb player union is probably
in all professional sports and you're asking players to give up money now like that's the
only like you're asking them to limit their earning power in order for the like i don't know
i have no idea how that's gonna go it seems like a rock and a hard place uh but they gotta fix like
baseball's gonna die i like if the dodgers won the world series this year i have no interest in next
year like it's three straight world series where the obvious team won that doesn't happen in any
sport the the fucking the the
golden state warriors were the greatest team in in ml in nba history they went so what was it 73 and
nine they lost they didn't win that that championship that that year like it's still
you don't know i have no interest in in a league in which the outcome is is predetermined more or
less all i know is that now everybody hates the dodgers and we'll be rooting like absolute hell
that they lose because it'll be so funny if they if they don't end up winning the world series this
year and we'll be rooting for them and we'll be rooting for them and we'll be rooting for them
part of it like it bums me out because like i i they have so many good players that i like
which is like credit credit to them for going out and getting incredibly good players like
i love mookie bets i want to root for mookie bets until he retires show shohei otani is cool as shit
but like i just can't root for those freddie freeman i can't root for those guys because
their team is just too fucking good and that shouldn't exist uh and so that pisses me off
and like terry school another guy that i really i really love he
he's extremely fun to watch now i can't root for him uh school will put me over the edge with the
dodgers i was like a big dodgers defender before that like when they got shohei i'm like listen man
just the world we live in like i don't know what to tell you big team spending big money
my boston red socks don't fucking do that right like like as a red socks fan i like i want my
team to go out and just throw money at awesome players so like and everything that dodgers fans
that will say to me and complain and be like you're just a hater
you you hate us because you ain't us it's a hundred percent true like i wish that my team
was the team that just goes out there and throws money at the best players and gets them and i get
to reap the benefits that's how i grew up being a massive fan of the red socks like they threw
money at pedro martinez they threw money at many many ramirez they were a good team because they
had more resources than a lot of other teams and that was awesome but they also weren't the only
team doing that like there was arms
races still at that time where like the red socks the yankees some like some other teams were
competitive and going out and having arms races for these top players and it made the league
interesting it certainly wasn't an even competitive balance but it was not just one team always
grabbing the best players available because they just have so much money to play with and that's
just where we are right now and it's boring we need promotion relegation yeah and you look about
yeah
but to look at in the nhl it's the vegas golden knights the same thing we're dodgers are following
the rules like they're playing within their rules within the structure and you're right it's the
hate us because he ain't us for sure they're not breaking any rules they're not doing anything
wrong we wished all our teams did that in vegas same thing with the manipulation of the ltir push
them well above the cap we've seen tampa bay do it we've seen florida do it where you manipulate the
ltir into the playoffs so what did the nhl do they changed the rules you can't do that anymore
so when you talk about league and which league has the most power you can't do that anymore
most power to influence the way the league and the teams are managed absolutely it's gary bittman
in the nhl
The last time Major League Baseball tried to put in a salary cap was 94-95.
Locked out for 232 days, missed the World Series in 1994,
and they needed a Supreme Court justice to get the game going again.
Baseball players don't care.
Dude, I'm going to sit on the golf course for 232 days.
That's fine.
I don't care about the disruption of my sport or the potential collapse of the sport.
So if this becomes another strike-slash-lockout, dude, this is going to be a long time.
I don't think either one is ready to give, and I will see.
I don't think it ends well.
I think it has to end with some kind of floor and ceiling.
I think the structure right now for your inability to that luxury tax,
that you just pay more, just pay more, and you can't continue to run like that.
Eventually, the TV money will run out, people will stop going, and the sport will die.
They've got to do the MLS thing where teams have salary caps
but have a handful of contracts.
They have contracts that don't count towards the salary cap.
That's how LA Galaxy ends up with David Beckham.
That's how Inter-Miami ends up with Messi.
I'm fine with the big market teams having an advantage.
We don't live in a perfect world.
That's just the reality of the situation.
It took forever for my Sabres to become apparently a destination.
It's cool when the smaller market teams have these runs where they beat the big market teams.
The Diamondbacks.
That shit rocks.
That happens.
It's not a perfect league.
The league was still in a much better place when it wasn't completely broken by one team.
We all loved baseball growing up, and it was never perfect.
It was never competitively balanced, completely equal,
and it was still a lot better than what it is right now.
This will be a hockey podcast at some point.
I do want to use this to transition to sports interaction.

Ontario or Alberta only must be 19-plus in Ontario, 18-plus in Alberta.
Please play responsibly.
This gives us an excuse to look at the World Series odds from Sports Interaction.
Right now, it's Dodgers plus 260.
And then. The second-best team.
Yeah, Dodgers plus 260 to win the World Series.
All right, guys.
Seems just, like, outrageous.
Free fucking money.
Next closest team, plus 700, it's the New York Yankees.
So this is officially my fucking nightmare, where the top two teams, the only two teams with shorter than plus 1,000 odds,
are the Dodgers and the Yankees.
Which we've already seen, and it is just, like, the worst possible, like, hope the sun explodes and both teams lose.
Congratulations, baseball.
Look what you've done.
My thing is just that, like, if you're not betting on the Dodgers, like, you want to do something else,
Boston Red Sox plus 1,300.
Like, I'm somewhat of the belief that, like, if you get to the World Series,
any given game, like, the Red Sox just swept, or I don't know if they swept,
they just fucking dominated the Dodgers.
Like, over the course of a couple of games, one to two, anything can happen.
So, like, more or less, I guess what I'm saying is, whoever you think is going to come out of the AL,
bet on them to win the World Series if you're looking for value.
I mean, I don't believe in the fucking, the Yankees aren't getting to the goddamn World Series.
It's so funny that the fucking Red Sox, it's like Red Sox against the world,
and, like, the Red Sox are the scrappy underdog at this point in time.
But, like. Yeah, I know.
But, like, the Red Sox are the scrappy underdog at this point in time.
It's, if the Red Sox beat the Yankees, I think that a lot of people are going to be like,
fuck yeah, Red Sox.
We're coming.
Two games behind them.
Best team in baseball since, I mean, at least since Jalen Brown was traded.
Yeah, I mean, right now, it's set up for a wild card series in New York,
but the Red Sox are obviously hot.
We get a Yankees-Red Sox wild card series at Fenway Park.
Brother, I'll be fucking jacked up.
I'll be juiced.
Hell yeah.
So, it's Dodgers plus 260, Yankees plus 700, Brewers plus 1,000, Braves plus 1,100,
Red Sox plus 1,400, Rays plus 1,600, Cubs plus 1,800.
I hope that I'm doing this conversion right.
I think so.
But, yeah, so that's where we are.
Go Red Sox.
Go Sox.
Absolutely.

This does remind me.
Did you see any of the Women's Pro Baseball League stuff?
I saw the National Anthem.
The National Anthem was. Tough start.
Can't start a league like that, I'm afraid.
I'm sorry.
You just can't.
But their mascot, I'm going to blank on the woman's name, but the woman who's like 90
some years old who played in the original Women's Professional Baseball League, their
mascot is just like a cartoon version of her.
And that woman's still alive.
So there's like the mascot version of her meeting the real version of her.
And it was the mascot's awesome.
The mascot fucking rocks.
But the anthem like made Fergie look like a good anthem singer.
It was the worst anthem I've ever heard in my entire life.
Was that the first anthem?
Was that the first anthem out of the gate for that league?
I think so.
It's the only one I saw.
So I think so.
And that just can't happen.
It was just like three women who all were like, we're going to do our anthem at the same time.
Do you remember when the first woman college football player made her debut?
Yes.
For Vanderbilt, I believe.
Yeah.
With the opening kickoff.
And it was just fucking horrible.
Yeah.
Just unfortunate.
You just. That can't happen.
Just unfortunate.
People are just waiting to talk shit.
And be the worst people on the planet and on the internet.
And that happens.
And it's just like, oh, fuck, man.
Yeah.
I mean, I just. I'm rooting for you.
I want it to be awesome.
Only up from here.
Only up from here.
Only up from here.
And I'll say, still not the. It's not like it's the worst run.
We're talking about which leagues are run better than others.
WNBA is still a fucking shit show.
Can't be worse than that.
Tough.
Tough.
All right.
From one Detroit superstar.
Getting out of there.
To one that apparently still wants the hell out of there.
A report from Helene St. James in the Detroit Free Press this morning.
Here is where the wings find themselves as August ages.
Without leadership and with a captain.
I think that's very funny.
Back-to-back lines there.
As Dylan Larkin has not budged on the request to be traded.
That he may not.
That he may not be made shortly after the season ended on April 15th.
So, yes.
We kind of started this off-season.
All of this craziness.
With, damn, Dylan Larkin has requested a trade.
And we still have not had a conclusion to that.
Petey, I'll ask you this.
Is it more surprising to you that Dylan Larkin hasn't been traded on August 5th?
Or that Dylan Larkin still wants to be traded on August 5th?
Even with Steve Eisenman?
Even with Steve Eisenman out as general manager in Detroit?
This is tough.
Because you've got a guy that you locked up for a reason for a very long time.
He wears the C for your team.
And you expect him to be the guy that helps carry you to a Stanley Cup.
At least a return to the playoffs for a team with the longest drought in the league now.
Man, trade him.
Get him.
If your captain wants to get the hell out, what's that going to do to your room?
Like, he has got.
And I like Dylan Larkin.
How many five straight seasons of 30 plus goals?
You have to get him out of that room.
And Detroit's not ready to win.
Like, I'm sorry, Detroit Red Wing fans.
This team isn't ready right now.
And he can't.
Like, get the return while you can to try to get through the rebuild faster than you expect.
Get that young talent.
Get that young core.
Get another draft pick or two and get him out of there.
Unfortunately now, with the firing of Eisenman, which is way too late.
But that's another show.
If you would have fired him maybe a year or two ago, how was the Eiser plan going?
Now you've got to.
You don't have a GM.
So you can't make the deal.
So I think this is just going to get uglier.
I think it's going to get worse.
And it's unfortunate, honestly, for both sides.
I don't know how teammates go into the locker room and look at a guy sitting across from you wearing the C going,
I went out.
Like, screw you.
I live here.
I love playing for Detroit.
Like, beat it then if you don't want to be here.
So I think this is going to cause more problems.
And I think that's something that the organization has to clear up by September 29th when opening season starts.
Yeah, here's the problem with the, like, the just trade them, get something while you can.
At the end of the day, he still has that.
No trade clause.
And if he only wants to go to X, X, and X, and, like, if he's not budging on his trade requests,
I take that to also mean that he's not budging on, like, where he wants to go.
And the early indications were just that, like, he wants to go to the team's, like, I mean, it was, like, Minnesota, Vegas, and Florida.
I think we can probably take Florida out of there now, hopefully.
But, yeah, I mean, I agree with the sentiment.
And I.
I agree with like, I don't know.
know how you move forward it seems like a really ugly place to be i i just the one thing that i
keep going back to is that if dylan larkin is on your roster uh for game one of this season
he absolutely shouldn't be wearing the c in his chest i just i do not think i do not think that
you can request a trade stand on that on august 5th after they fire the gm they give like clearly
i think picked aside because we all know that that larkin and eiserman were like butting heads
kind of adversarial both publicly and privately he can't be the captain of that team and i think
that if he is in that uniform in game one i hope that he just gets fucking skewered by the the home
crowd i know that red wings fans are pissed they should be pissed they should fucking hate that
guy whether he's on their team or not and i'm
sure that like if he stays on their team and he's productive and things kind of smooth themselves
out it'll be fine in the long run but he deserves to absolutely get cooked by the organization and
by the fan base for where they are right now yeah but but pete here's here's one of the things i
wonder and i think when we talked about no no trade no move closet it was initially there so
the player could go to the town and be oh i really like it here i want to be here
please please please don't trade me out of this city and that was the intent
of the rule and now you look at a player going dude i want out but yet like i still have a list
like screw you like you can't have both and this is one of the areas the nhl is clearly going to
have to look at and i think you're going to see gm's less willing to have that no trade list or
you know what it's not a two-team list it's not a four-team list it's half the league like you
can't just say i'm going to four teams because now we have no power but yet you you can control these
terms and you can control these terms and you can control these terms and you can control these
i think that's going to have to shift so what's the rule therefore why do you have a no trade man
i really want to go play for the detroit red rings that's my home state team man just please guarantee
that i'm not going to be traded anywhere okay we'll do that for you dylan we really like you
and then and then for you to say no screw that i want out and i only want to go to three teams
i i don't think that's fair i don't think that's fair to the ownership and management of the
detroit win rings and a bigger broader picture is it fair to the league so i i think you're going to
that much more and much differently in the future the no trade no move clauses and the amount of of
what those lists are going to look like because they cannot be in a situation like this with
dylan larkin with the guy that you're paying eight and a half million dollars a year for the next six
years like you're going to have to have some differences in the way you approach free agents
long-term signings i i think that you're going to see less of this blanket no move i i don't think
you're going to see managers be able to to work in that time frame and work in that ability to
to move a player you're going to be screwed and i don't think this is going to be something
just like we saw the limits where where keith kachuk signs a 13 year or 13 million dollar 10
year contract or dph or with a 15 year contract and that finally got cut down this is something
that's going to be addressed by the gms and ownership over time it has to be and i i think
i said it during the uh with a free agency stream that we did for bleacher report but
like i would love to see some sort of mechanism that if you have a no trade clause and you put in
a formal request to be traded i would love to see that trigger some sort of uh modified no trade
clause where it opens it up to i don't like even like 10 teams 10 teams 15 teams 16 teams half the
i feel like i know that that would kind of open up a gray area for quote-unquote officially request
a trade and sort of just kind of uh unofficially asking for one or pushing for one but yeah like
i just i agree that we're in a place where i i do not want to go down the road where these no trade
clauses and no movement clause are weaponized to go to like one or two teams and we get to a place
where like baseball it is a shortened league with a short list of teams that are relevant and and
whatnot uh
yeah i mean and with the larkin conversation i do want to be careful not to give like the red
wings too much credit here or defend them too much because it's been a while and they really
haven't pushed it forward but like a lot of that falls on eiserman and he's not there anymore and
so like i don't know if that pushes a reset button for for larkin at all i i would certainly
understand if he was like listen i just want to win and i don't like where
we've been i don't like that we've flamed out over the past like handful of years
and i don't like what we've done this offseason because basically it's just been
what patrick kane out victor arvidson in i don't think that addresses a ton of
issues number one center number one young center true that's it's a big big acquisition
for the red wings but yeah like they're still not in a great spot but like a big reason why they
have the longest playoff drought and why they've flamed out over the past few years
is because of a lack of leadership and a lack of ability to get this thing back on track
and who's the fucking captain of that team take some responsibility take some accountability
put your hand up and say like i've been part of the problem here
let's figure this out let's get out of it i just feel like if if larkin is going to come
out in whatever it is september right before the season starts and issue a statement like
zach wierenski did and say like i'm committed to being here i'm like this didn't go the way that i
wanted it to blah blah blah i'm not going to buy that for a fucking second because you know who did
it immediately was zach wierenski i think zach wierenski saw the way that things were going
and saw it moving way too fast and was like whoa let's pump the brakes here i don't know if i really
want out i'm just kind of frustrated right now i respect that and i can approach that from a point
where like listen i see where he's coming from and i get it and i don't blame him for being like what
conversations about my future if larkin had done that or had like even in the past couple of weeks
in post eiserman and said like all right i'll see where this goes i'm just frustrated and i want to
win i would give him some credit i just think that if we're here on august 5th and he's in the same
place that he was at the start of the off season that guy can't be your captain we uh we also
didn't talk about the most masterfully class or massive masterfully crafted social
media post in history i would say which is the dylan larkin happy birthday post with two emojis
for a caption and the captain c covered up by the happy birthday text on the graphic it was
like because you got to do it like you can't not post he's still on the roster you got to post the
birthday thing but it was just like it wasn't a it wasn't like an excited picture of dylan larkin
the c was covered up it was sponsored and they did a cake emoji as the caption like just the most
handled as perfectly
as you can handle a happy birthday post in that situation it made me very happy i mean the only
thing that would have been better would have just been the it is your birthday screenshot from the
office the banners it is your birthday period congratulations dylan larkin uh the other big
name that like might be surprising hasn't been moved yet is connor hellebuck uh and i was i did
see recently that jeff merrick was saying listen
that thing's not dead yet it still could happen connor hellebuck specifically to the buffalo
sabers i think that that's the team that everybody's looking at and sean i see you i see you
doing the mama mia like bring it over bring it over let me hear it all of it you weren't you
weren't always there were you um i don't so i think originally before it became how clear
how clear it was that people didn't give a fuck about this draft class i was a little
i was worried and just some of the names that were getting thrown out like i believe the original
last was zach benson and i was like uh minnesota fold your fucking franchise or minnesota winnipeg
fold your franchise like i don't what are you talking about your hands off my junkyard dog
but like now if the conversation is like upl i was always like obviously we're gonna have to
ship out that goalie to bring one in jack quinn thank you for your service like enjoy winnipeg
hope you can get wi-fi up there um redeem murka great knowing you mr come uh like or come man
whatever his name is
um like any like that is all fine but when we start talking about hellenist or or austlin or
obviously zach benson i get a little more hesitant uh but like obviously yeah like conor hellebuck's
one of if not the best goalie in hockey american hero medal of honor recipient conor hellebuck
like yeah and like tage obviously like i we're in we live in a world where team usa guys you
gotta keep team usa guys happy by having other team usa guys so bring them on down like i yeah
that would obviously that would rock it would make the buffalo sabers a better team and closer to uh
winning a stanley cup so bring them on down yeah i think there's a lot of differences here first of
all his he didn't and to this day correct me if i'm wrong pete did he hasn't publicly through
himself or his agent issued a statement i want to be traded i think it's been more quiet between
himself and management and ownership and i think that that has helped this so that if it does blow
up and it does fall apart that conor hellebuck can still wear the blue jets jersey on opening night
without the chaos that I think Dylan Larkin will bring.
ring now on the other side of it you look at the two teams who of these two teams has a better
chance of being a playoff team or or at least pushing to the cup in the next few years i still
think it's detroit like winnipeg winnipeg's window i unfortunately has closed i i know they have some
really nice players but they're not going to win so the quickest way to get through a rebuild is
take one of your big assets that you have locked up for a long time that's really old and turn it
into some new young assets so i think this deal actually works better for both teams larkin still
as i said five years 30 goals straight hellebuck had his worst winning season wins losses in his
entire career and and so it's time for him to make a move anyway like you see how goalies can get
that resurgent from getting to a new team so i think this is more likely to get done now if you
look at buffalo i agree 100 with everything sean de paz said buffalo now is a team that yeah they
can make the playoffs again this year i think they can i i think there's a team that that may be still
or right on that precipice of being there,
but you put Connor Hellebuck in the net,
man, confidence and belief goes a long way
in the National Hockey League.
And if you can just get him to get into the playoffs,
I think the Sabres have improved their team.
So I still think this can get done,
but if it doesn't, it doesn't change the face
of the Winnipeg Jets when he comes out
as their starting goalie.
I just don't think he's approached it that way.
So this is a different situation
than what you see with Larkin and Detroit.
That's my other thing on Winnipeg, too.
Yeah, definitely agree.
Like, why do they need Connor Hellebuck for?
Even when they were making the playoffs,
I was like, this is not a good team.
They don't have, like, any skaters.
Like, they have a great goalie,
and they have a handful of, like, really good players,
but, like, they don't have any fucking superstars.
Like, that's not a team that's going to win
a Stanley Cup, and other worse.
So why even, obviously, as a Buffalo Sabres fan,
I want them to trade him to the Buffalo Sabres,
but trade that guy anywhere.
Like, you need to be honest with who you are,
and I know that might be hard in that market,
because those fans are incredible,
and they got, they looked like they were close at a point,
even though I don't think they were that close.
But, like, you got, why hold on to him at this point?
And, like, I know Connor Hellebuck
has had his playoff struggles in the past,
but, like, there is nothing sadder
than a very elite goaltender
just being wasted in a place
where, like, he's never really going to have an opportunity
to truly contend for a Stanley Cup.
And so, like, I think it now is a pretty good,
good time for the Jets and Hellebuck
to go their separate ways.
And I agree with you, Petey.
Like, it just feels different than the Larkin thing,
both because of, like, it doesn't seem as ugly,
it doesn't seem as, I don't know,
I don't want to say, like, nonsensical,
because it is sensical for Larkin to be tired
of what's going on in Detroit.
But, like, I think he's handled it better.
And the fact that his trade list seems to be a bit wider,
he's not trying to push himself to a specific location,
and just, like, the situation in Winnipeg.
Plus, like, Hellebuck re-signed in Winnipeg
when it felt like that whole thing was going to fall apart.
Like, him and Shifley were the ones that were like,
you know what, everybody kind of is counting us out
and saying that, like, we don't want to stay here.
Let's commit.
I think it was eight years at the time that they both signed.
Like, they gave Winnipeg the shot
to do something with them there.
And they just. Haven't been able to bring it on home.
So, like, I would personally. I'd like to see Hellebuck go somewhere else
and see if he can continue sort of the redemption arc
as playoff Hellebuck,
because the man has a, what is it,
a Presidential Medal of Freedom
because he had one awesome playoff game.
Let's see what that turns into
in the Stanley Cup playoffs from this point on.
So, I'm kind of hoping that Hellebuck gets traded.
I'm kind of hoping that Larkin doesn't,
because I feel like, as a fan of just a messy bitch
and a messy situation. Not my team.
Yeah, right.
Like, fucking go crazy.
Not me.
So, like, and I don't feel bad for Dylan Larkin
getting, quote-unquote, like, wasted in Detroit,
because I feel like he is kind of playing above his pay grade
and playing above what he truly should be,
like, in the NHL level,
because Detroit hasn't really done a great job
of putting. Putting pieces around him, so. Why doesn't he want to go to Buffalo?
Like. Why doesn't who?
Dylan Larkin?
Like, I mean, like,
I think there's a question about whether or not
it's a true number one center,
but I think we had this conversation with somebody,
I can't remember who it was,
like,
Tage Thompson
is a number one center
who just doesn't really play center.
Like, you have enough talent on that line.
I don't know.
This is just me being a Sabres fan,
but, like,
I don't know.
I think the Sabres,
I think they have enough talent to cover up the. They have a USA Olympian.
That's gone.
Part of the requirements appear to be
Olympic teammates playing together.
They do have an Olympian in Buffalo.
And if you're. If Dylan Larkin,
which he doesn't seem to be,
but if you're at all worried about the optics of it,
about you joining one of these super teams or whatever,
come bring. Come bring the Buffalo Sabres a chip.
Why not?
I don't know if it's even. I don't know if the money can wear. I don't know, but. The last thing I want to say,
and I want to go back to Hellebuck for a second, too,
and I think that this is where you talked about
them signing him for such a long term
for such a high dollar amount is
that was what was supposed to bring you
a cup to. Bring your window.
And I think it brings up a bigger, broader argument
and discussion in the National Hockey League
is how important is a goalie?
Like, how important is that goalie?
Igor Shostakhin, highest paid goalie in the league,
$11.5 million.
Are the Rangers going to win a cup next year?
No.
You look at the list of the top 10 goalies,
anybody making over $7.5 million,
how many of those guys really have a chance
of winning a Stanley Cup?
I don't know.
Dustin Wolfe?
No.
UC Soros?
No.
Demko?
No.
Like, so put your money
where your mouth is, man.
What's more valuable to an NHL team
to win a Stanley Cup?
I.e., look at the Carolina Hurricanes
and look at the Vegas Golden Knights.
Like, you need a good goalie.
And we talked about this
when Kemper won a cup with Colorado.
Just be good.
Just be good enough.
Just be okay.
We've seen it with Chicago.
We've seen it with Colorado.
Like, just be okay.
I think the trend of paying these goalies
this much money,
I think you're going to see it changing.
And I think it's going to be because of this.
And because the highest paid goalie in the league,
unlike the highest paid pitcher in the league,
isn't going to end up at the Dodgers.
You're going to end up in New York.
Okay, great.
I'm making $11.5 million
and we miss the playoffs again.
And I think the Russian goalie
is probably okay with that.
But I think that will be
the bigger discussion long-term
is how important is this?
They're not a quarterback.
Quarterbacks shift it instantly in the NFL.
I don't know if a goaltender does.
I always believed in it before
that you need a really good goalie,
but you don't anymore.
You need an average goalie.
You need a guy that's halfway in the league.
You need maybe a guy in the top 12,
to 15 to win a Stanley Cup.
So I think this will change
the way goalies get paid in the future.
I don't necessarily agree with that
because I think there are two ways
to win a Stanley Cup
when it comes to goaltending.
You either have to have a great goalie
or a goaltender playing great
that closes the gap
between two great teams
or bridges kind of the difference there.
So like you can absolutely like,
you don't have to have an elite goal.
But like, that's the way to do it is like,
if your team is not,
if the margins are close
and you have the goaltender who's playing better
and you have an elite goalie that can't be matched,
then you win that way.
Or you have a team that's so good
that it sort of masks mid to good goaltending.
And that one, I think is a little bit more rare.
I would say where like, I guess maybe not recently,
like the Kemper situation is rare in that like,
they didn't have a goaltender
who was playing particularly well
and they still won the Cup.
You've seen a lot of the times where a goalie goes on a run
and just has a really great team in front of them
and they win the Cup that way.
Like even like the Stuart Skinner example,
like Stuart Skinner is not a great goaltender,
but he had a really, really good team in front of him
and played well enough at points to go on a deep run.
And so like, that's the two ways that I look at it.
- I'll say this though, Pete,
and you talked about that's what you need to do.
Over the last 10 Stanley Cup winners,
how many of them have been great goalies?
Bobrovsky has two, Vasco Alessia has two.
I say they are great goaltenders.
Jordan Bennington has one.
He's elite.
Is he great?
Brandon Bussey. - Oh, he's not elite.
- Bussey, Aiden Hill, Braden Holtby,
Darcy Kemper, Matt Murray.
That's your last decade.
Dude, those are some average fricking goalies.
So I still believe you don't need it.
Like, I'm sorry.
I think you need to be good or good
at the time.
Like, Brandon Bussey was world-class
to win the Cup for five games.
Like, he was elite for five games.
But none of those goalies in the top 10,
except Bobrovsky and Vasilevsky,
would I say are elite goaltenders.
And that's the last decade.
So--
- I would throw Holtby in there.
Like, elite. - Yeah, Holtby,
he was one of the best goaltenders in Canada at the time.
That's fair.
But I won't take that for Murray, Kemper, Hill,
Bussey, Bennington.
I won't.
So I still, it took me a long time to come to that
because I'm a goalie guy and I love my goalies.
But I still think the great goalies,
it's just who, to your point,
who's playing great at the time.
- But I would say, like, in the case of the Sabres,
like, the Sabres have, like,
question marks on the back end
where, like, if they got Hellebuck,
I think that it would make sense
to go out and take that swing
because he helps mask what's in front of him.
And we've seen teams make deep runs doing that.
I think back to, like, Henrik Lundqvist
when he was on those Rangers teams and they got
the eastern conference final and you were like holy shit that defense is so
fucking bad yeah but hank is so good that he's consistently bailing them out i don't think that
the sabers defense is as bad as some of those rangers teams but if they have growing pains
and they have trouble figuring out and they have some holes in the postseason where they're getting
kind of outmatched i think that hellebuck pushes you more towards being a true stanley cup contender
with him in that plus but is that to gibson is that gibson to detroit a veteran goalie who was
supposed to be the guy gets you to detroit and that's going to put us over the hump or is it
even gibson wasn't good when he got to detroit like he hadn't been good for years and hellebuck
had his worst year of his career just one year i get it one year yeah one year tim tom i went back
20 years now it gets worse tim thomas chris osgood anti niemi like it's bad it's amazing there are
good ones jonathan quick outstanding mark andre flurry outstanding cory crawford has two somebody's
going to tell me i know chicago fans will get in an argument with me on how elite cory crawford is
but but uh not elite that's the team again i i just think be careful buffalo if you do get him
is it the man are we putting so much in that basket i i don't know like upl if you play better
would if you had a better goaltender would they have gone on another round potentially i think
their goaltending was a problem clearly they didn't know who to play in that in that second
round so yes you hope that solidifies that it'll be interesting and this pete this debate to me
is why i come on the chaos i loved when you said i didn't know who to play i didn't know who to play
i disagree that's fun like that is fun i i think this is this is an argument that people will
we'll have to wait until june or but eventually july when they play 87 games for christ's sake
um but but on on who's really going to do this if hellebuck joins the buffalo sabres are they
all of a sudden one of the teams contending for an eastern conference title i think they are
i mean they damn near were they were damn near last year i it it sometimes i sit and think about
the fact that the buffalo sabres missed going to the eastern conference final on a game
seven overtime like it doesn't fucking get worse than that what i was going to say about the
hellebuck thing too is i think part of like with the sabres specifically part of why they were so
good last year was because of how aggressive their defensemen were and you're allowed to play that
like you can play that way with more confidence if you have a fucking awesome goalie uh i can
bail you out on a few circumstances and also i meant to bring this up during the baseball
conversation but pd mentioned thatcher demko did you see the gold we got out of the nhl follow
tracker from thatcher demko no thatcher demko
san diego native and presumed padres fan immediately unfollowed terek scooble after
that trade immediately unfollowed him on instagram and that's the good shit right there that's a good
that's a fucking die hard padres fan and i love because that means he's a baseball guy and was
like this guy's one of the best pitchers in the game i'm gonna follow this guy like i i'm a pro
athlete who respects other pro athletes until he's a fucking dodger fuck those guys awesome
shit thatcher demko absolutely
yeah i love that 30 years old by the way i didn't realize he was that old
thatcher demko you didn't realize he's that old no i did not realize i feel like thatcher demko
has been around forever i'm surprised he's only 30 he's on the ir again isn't he yeah i mean he's
just he's hurt somewhere yeah he's hurt somewhere with his feet in the air guaranteed very good
extension on behalf of the vancouver canucks uh when they had other options and i think they kept
We also have a little bit of news from the Sports Business Journal this week
highlighting that the NHL seems to be keying in on Texas for its 33rd franchise.
But the big question is whether it's going to be Houston or Austin.
Apparently, the league is in deep talks with billionaire Dan Friedkin.
I believe that's how it's pronounced.
He's the owner of Aroma, the soccer team, as well as Everton in the Premier League.
Sorry to DJ, I almost called it the Premier League.
The Premier League.
The Prem.
The Prem.
And according to the Sports Business Journal, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daley,
in his recent appearance on the Sick podcast, the Eye Test,
that's a strange name for a podcast,
said that the league's aim is to, quote,
finalize talks with the Friedkin Group and have the league's Board of Governors sign off by the end of this year.
And goes on to say he hopes that the expansion team plays its first game by the 2029-2030 season.
Petey, you got any thoughts on Houston versus Austin?
I don't.
And I do think this is, obviously, it's the first time where we've got this far,
where we go, okay, we have exclusive rights.
We have the money.
We can pay $3.5 billion.
We're committed to it.
It's just we don't know where it's going to be.
And I know people in the chat were saying, well, it's either, you know, whoever,
if Austin doesn't get it, they'll move.
No, no, dude, it's one guy, one owner is going to put a team in one of these two spots.
He's just trying to decide if he's going to go to the fourth largest metro area in the country,
or the largest city in the country that doesn't have any of the four major sports in Austin.
I think that's his decision.
I think it'll be an automatic rivalry with Dallas.
I think this is, it's good for the National Hockey League.
And it probably, unfortunately, Arizona fans is going to happen, and sorry to Atlanta as well.
It's going to happen.
Expansion's going to happen.
The problem with expansion for people that want to get into this league is the fees over the last two years
have doubled in two years.
And I'm going to go back, sorry, this is my Arizona speech.
Alex Morello, who blew up this organization, it's his fault, point all the blame at him.
Sorry, worked for him, don't like him, all those things are true.
But he had an opportunity to get back in the league for $1 billion.
That was part of the agreement on moving the team to Utah.
He had a window that he could bring a team back to Arizona for $1 billion.
He failed to meet deadlines, lost that, the organization goes back to the league now.
However, if he could have found a way to put together a billion dollars,
and bought the team and brought it back to Arizona,
dude could turn around in a year and sell it for two.
Whoops, missed that window, didn't you, Alex?
So now, so now, yeah, just exactly.
By the way, still doesn't have that new building in Nevada that he promised years ago with no public money.
Anyway, that's another story.
So I do think that was an opportunity to do that.
And this is what's pushing Atlanta out.
Atlanta was a done deal.
Atlanta had two sites, it had two ownership groups, they had Alpharetta, they had Foresight,
they were going to build a building.
Anson Carter was involved.
They had two different.
We're in, we've got public money, we've got a government agreeing to it.
And then the fees went up to 1.5.
Now they're two, and now we don't talk about Atlanta anymore.
With $2 billion investment, Atlanta's kind of pushed to the wayside.
So I think it's an opportunity for the owners to make a lot of money at once,
but they've got to find somebody that can pay not just $2 billion.
Now you've got to build an arena.
Now you've got to build the infrastructure.
Now you've got to pay players and the staff.
This has become the way sports are, and what sports has become,
is this is going to be the way it's going to be.
It's going to be very difficult.
And I think Houston, Austin, great.
They're getting this push through to the finish line.
But I don't think they're alone.
I still think there'll be a second team coming.
The thing that's interesting to me about this is, first off,
I feel like the big thing, and I know Craig Morgan hammered this a lot
when the Coyotes moving, like, where in Houston do they play?
Like, they don't have an arena.
I feel like, and this is just me going purely off vibes,
I would assume it would be easier to build an arena,
in Austin, such like a fast-growing city or whatever.
But also, like, a team in Austin simply cannot play games on Saturday
for the first half of the year.
Like, it's not like that.
The only thing they care about in sports there is the University of Texas Longhorns.
Like, you simply can't, or you can play on Saturdays
when Texas plays big noon.
You can play on Saturday night.
You just can't, like, they are going to automatically be number two
to a college football program.
Yeah, but that's true in a lot of different places.
That's true in a lot of different places already.
Yeah, I don't know, though.
Like, where have they added a team in the last 25,
like, that has been so dominated by one?
I mean, Dallas.
Like, you could say the same thing about Dallas.
Like, you can't play on Sundays when the Cowboys play.
Do they, though?
Do the Cowboys?
But there's a way around it.
Like, the Dallas Stars is a successful franchise.
And, like, it's one day a week.
And if your scheduling is competing with,
uh, a team in market one day a week,
then, like, you're going to be fine.
Like, I wouldn't worry about that.
I don't think it's necessarily, like, uh,
preventative from them being successful.
I just, like, Saturday's the biggest night of the week.
And you just can't, you just can't play Saturday nights
if the, if Texas is playing for, like, half the season.
And that's. Texas only plays on Saturday nights, like,
like, three, four times a year anyway.
I guess that's fair.
You only play 12.
Yeah, I don't know.
I just, like, I just, generally speaking,
I'm interested in, like, as far as sports fans in that city go,
it is so. it is so locked in on one thing.
It is Texas football.
And so I'm interested in how those kind of. I mean, Chad's pointing out the obvious one that we missed
is Columbus and Ohio State.
Yeah, fair.
Yeah, Chad, I think you're overstating
college football fans' interest in hockey.
That's just me.
And what the hell do I know?
I don't think that that's a bigger influence.
The bigger influence here, Sean, isn't college football.
The bigger influence is what city can make the owner more money,
which is going to put more seats,
which is going to have more corporate sponsorships,
which is going to allow me to make more money
and for me, that's Houston.
Because there's a larger corporate sports base
and they're used to spending money for sports,
it's a larger market.
It's a bigger TV market.
There's more people.
I think it's Houston just for those reasons,
but they might get that new bump from Austin,
like you got in Seattle with that,
oh my gosh, it's new, the Utah bump.
Oh, it's really new.
Like, maybe, maybe that's why you go to Austin.
I think it ends up being Houston.
But again, like I've said many, many times on the show,
what the hell do I know?
But I think it's Houston.
I will say,
And Phoenix.
burned Coyotes fan, I don't
want it to be Houston. And I see people
in the chat saying Kansas City. I hope Kansas City never
gets a fucking hockey team because
I don't want any of the fans that were talking
mega shit to Arizona
fans. I don't want any of them
to see happiness. Austin, fine, because
they weren't in our mentions.
They weren't beefing with Michaela Perkins
on Twitter. Kansas City was.
Houston was. Shout out, Michaela.
Shout out, Matt.
I'm obviously rooting for Austin here
for obvious reasons. I'm a Longhorns
fan. If I can make a trip down to
Austin every year, get
both Longhorns and
some NHL action in, that would be my dream.
I also just, I know that it makes
more sense on paper for Houston, given the
market and all that, but
the NHL, to your point, PD,
has not been afraid to take shots
at new markets. I mean, it's easy
to forget that the Golden Knights
were the first fucking team in Vegas, and
when they went to Vegas, everybody was saying, I don't know
if this is going to work, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I don't know if this city can
sustain a regular
fan base, and I think
this is just kind of like a shot in the dark.
That team
captivated the city immediately,
and I think that you look at Utah,
they've taken the shot there.
They are very
willing to go into a place and kind of plant
their flag, and given where Austin is
right now in terms of growth and in terms
of how many people are flocking
to Austin, including a lot of celebrities
and just sort of like
a media hotbed, I think
that like the NHL would find that really
attractive. The only
other thing too, Pete, and I think this is
interesting too, you talk about one team coming in, people
say, well, they won't add one. Yeah,
they will. Like, we've had an unequal
balance between East and Western conferences in the
National Hockey League in the past, so they
can clearly do it again. I
do think, though, if expansion happens, and
I think it's going to be Houston or Austin, and I
do think it's going to happen quickly, and I do
think they're going to announce it quickly, I
firmly believe, and maybe I'm just
an optimist, I do think a second team is going
to be added either right at the same
time or nearly after that
first team. I really, really do.
And I do, Sean DePauw's,
I believe it's Arizona.
I really do. And I'm going to
tell you this, Pete, I know we're talking Austin, Texas,
and I know we're talking about the Friedkin
group.
Arizona, to me,
because if you go to Paradise Valley,
if you go to Scottsdale, one of the things
about making this happen is you need billionaires.
Arizona has that. Money is not
the issue. I really, really believe that. I
think this is more of a political issue on where
you can put the arena without the fight
from the Phoenix Suns. I think the
biggest barrier for a team coming
back to Arizona right now is
the Phoenix Suns. And I
think if they can work out a way to
coexist with the Phoenix Suns,
I think you could see an announcement. When
you see Houston, I do think you can
see Arizona at the same time because I've,
again, I'm not a reporter. I'm not Craig
Morgan. I don't have sources. I
just talk to people. So they're not official.
We've got that clear, Pete? Not official.
But the money's there. The ownership
is not the issue. It has been and
continues to be about the arena.
And if they can clear that
hurdle, it's one phone call. It's
buying one piece of land. This could change in
Arizona. It's Wednesday
today. This could change by the weekend.
It's literally that close. And I firmly
believe a team could be playing here in Arizona
by 2030.
We'll see. Shane
Doan, GM, is going to hit like crazy
first off. Why is he not working in the league?
Why is Shane Doan left Toronto?
I know there was some. Well, I can
explain to you why he left Toronto.
I get that. The Chica stuff,
I believe that too. But where is he now?
He's interviewed at other jobs. We've talked about
him being a GM at other places. It didn't
happen. Where's Shane Doan right now?
Mrs. Doan is kind of
the face of the Return
to Arizona group, is she not?
She is. She's officially the
chairman of the organization to bring it back.
But now that Shane is no longer affiliated
with an NHL team, it's Shane.
But I'm saying the Doans have been. Even when Shane was working, the Doans
were trying to bring a team back. He'll bridge the gap
between the political, the business community
and the money. And most importantly,
he's the guy that's worked for the NHL and is
very close, very close
with Gary Bettman. He was his right-hand
man for a few years when he worked for
the league. Don't
count Arizona
out. And I know I'm beating the
drum of my local team, but don't count them out.
Because the fan base is here.
Players, dude, do players want to play in Arizona?
Austin Matthews is here today.
It's 115. Austin
Matthews, Clayton Keller, when they had the lockout,
who came here? Crosby, McDavid.
They all came and played here
to practice. So yes,
players would love to come back to
Old Town Scottsdale and run around with a couple
of million bucks in their pocket after
a Saturday night game. I got an idea.
John, you've been talking about Kansas City
a little bit. I know you hope they don't get a team, but
Travis Kelsey's got a lot of money.
And
his wife famously has
a lot of money.
That would be
absolutely crazy.
Two years into
retirement, Travis Kelsey is
at the center of a Kansas
City NHL expansion group.
He likes hockey. I can't even
begin to tell you how much
I would fucking hate that franchise.
They instantly
might leave the Bruins
off-rep. They're instantly added to
the list of jerseys I would ever put on my fucking body.
I'll tell you that right now.
Get them the fuck
out of my face.
Like I said, I love hating. That's my favorite part of sports.
So as much as I will continue to say
I have no interest in that happening, if it does
happen, it'll give me
a distraction. I'm putting that out in the universe.
I'm putting that out in the universe, Pete. I absolutely
love that. Can you imagine the Swifties
on that? My goodness,
the amount of jerseys you would sell for that
organization? Kansas City versus
San Jose, greatest rivalry in sports.
Yeah, I was gonna say the Swifties going up against the
Wilmac stands.
Oh, greatest rivalry in sports.
That would be
unreal.
I would love it so much. Oh, by the way, PD, they put
anything on that garbage dump yet?
Yeah, they did not. We should do
another report from there, Sean. Maybe we should do a live
remote
from the garbage dump that was supposed to
be the new arena because the city was, everybody
that voted against it, way to go Tempe.
PD, was that like my first
exposure to you? Didn't you do it? Did you do
a live report from the garbage dump?
I did it in my toxic,
in my hazmat suit. I went live
to the dump because they blew
that. And yes, it is still a dump and it could have been
hotels and businesses bringing tax dollars
to the city of Tempe and it's still
at no cost to the taxpayers of Tempe.
At no cost to the taxpayers.
Outrageous, dude. Way to go.
Anytime you can keep a garbage dump in a landfill,
you gotta just, gotta take it.
Sean, we got any
PLL updates? I've been
off the grid a little bit. I wanted to check
in on the PLL and what's going on over there.
Well, first off, last week
you missed it. You missed the fact that they announced
basically four and a half years ago.
Nations for lacrosse. So
I saw the clip. Yeah.
I'm very excited for that. But it was
a pretty solid week in the PLL. They set
a PLL record. The DJs, California
Redwoods set a PL record
for most points in the game. Twenty
one. Pretty crazy. We also
had a goalie fight
and I was going to say, well, kind of a goalie fight.
I love that every sport
has like a protected class, basically
like goalies in baseball
or in lacrosse and
obviously like soccer.
And and in hockey
quarterbacks in baseball or in football
catchers to a certain
extent in like I've not as much
as the Buster Posey and the rules that changed. But like
I love it. Goals are the same thing.
Somebody entered the goalies
crease and it did not go
out. We have video of it.
He's in Zen inside role
cranked it off the post flag
down just to the head
continues around the crease
and more than just that we
got a melee on the end line.
This is it. Ain't you're
saying a baseball
player? Yeah, it's like
and I also like lacrosse
fights are awesome to me because
it's just guys on
their feet. It's not like
it's not a hockey fight. We're like
subdued by the fact that our skates
are sliding around.
There's also just like they have 30 second
penalties in lacrosse, which fascinates me.
But yeah, I just love that.
Going to the crease, you're going to get your ass beat.
Just the way it is. And in a hockey fight,
first thing you do is you drop your stick in your
gloves. Dude, lacrosse, I'm hanging out on my stick.
You're getting it. It's part of the fight.
The dude, the rules in that sport are
absolutely insane. Yeah, you can hit him. You can
slash him with your stick, but there's got to be you got to do it
this way. Like, dude, it's
unbelievable. Watch you guys bat bat
swing like a baseball bat at each other.
Bring it like I have not
watched the PLL. I'm
dialing into the Philadelphia Warthogs on
their next match with your water dogs head.
Okay, they are in Boston.
First, they're in first. So I'm
you know, I'm a bandwagon or the Utah
Archers lead in the last. So I'm going to take one of the
two bandwagon teams, of course.
Petey's a big Dodgers fan.
I do like that
they they like utilize their
sticks and weaponize
them because there's nothing dumber to me
than a like a football
fight where guys keep their helmets on and they
punch the helmets like
I also love the only sport
where their fights are less violent than the
play.
And that's that's
ridiculous. So I'm glad that
lacrosse at least like a sport with
helmets utilizes weapons
in their fights. I also love that. Yeah, and
guy getting cross-checked to the head. Like
if that happens in hockey, that guy's getting
suspended for like five games and lacrosse
is like go sit in the box for 30 fucking
seconds guy 30 second come back in
fire. No other ramifications like it'll
give a shit at all that I
think shows how prevalent scoring
is in in
lacrosse where they're like we can't go
like more than a minute, it'll just ruin the game.
30 second penalty let's go yeah yeah i i agree and i think one of the things that that's for a
future chaos over the summer when we're looking things i do think fighting could be a whole
episode on on where it lies in all of these sports because nothing bothers me and we already talked
about baseball ad nauseum but but dude if you're gonna fight fight throw a fight the guys running
in from the bullpen are laughing and like dude no let's square off on the mound just like we do
a center ice for a hockey fight square off on the mound throw some haymakers like you don't have
any helmets on like let's go you're not gonna cut your hand on the guy's visor like i'm so sick of
the baseball fights where you got 100 guys on the field and everybody's laughing like dude let's go
if you're gonna do it do it yeah there's nothing more embarrassing than when like the bullpen's
empty and you guys you guys got a jog 50 guys doing a light jog while nothing is clearly
developing in the infield and it's just like so now we just got a hundred guys
hanging out and delaying the game yeah there's always like a feeling out process about like is
this a it's gonna be a real fight and also under like we talked about how it's cool that they use
the equipment as a weapon a little bit i it's always lame when a batter comes out or the pitcher
and throws the helmet or throws the glove like you look you look like a wimp every single time
just fucking start fighting dude nothing worse than the the bryce harper throwing was it his
helmet yeah he threw his helmet and it just
the worst throw you've ever seen it went completely down into the right and like
almost tripped himself on his own helmet as he tried to throw it at the pitcher
yeah that's tough but and i want to see paid the pedro martinez throwing down don zimmer like dude
i can't wait for somebody to take babcock by the tie and throw him down at center right i'm ready
for it let's go i'm so glad that twitter didn't exist when the pedro don zimmer fight happened
because you just would have had that meme the worst takes imaginable
and was it was it great behavior on pedro's part to throw an old man to the ground
but you know who but you know who wanted the fucking smoke in that interaction
don zimmer way more than pedro get out of pedro's way more than pedro because if pedro does nothing
then he's getting beat on by an old man and that's a terrible look for pedro yeah that is the that is
like the ultimate fuck around and find out was don zimmer charging pedro and pedro just
completely dispatching him in the
easiest way possible he just got it's like when i when i was younger and like my sisters are trying
to fuck with me i'm not about to hit one of my sisters you just got to remove them from the
situation it might be a little uh unsightly in the way that you do it but i'm not you're not
throwing punches at the old man what else you're supposed to do it was a classic bull fighting
situation where like one guy had the the thing and it was it's not probably not good behavior to pick
a fight with a bull but when you got a somebody charging at you just like slightly step out of
the way and watch them
each exactly so uh justice for pedro r.i.p don zimmer but you fucked around and found out yeah
but uh pll is in in boston this week and it's uh throwback week they're doing a whole like uh
throwing it back to kind of their uh the mll days the the league that preceded uh the pll and
i know we talked a little bit about the new york lizards the wall lizards
they're back like they're doing it like so the atlas i believe or the the outlaws and the
the cannons boston cannons were mll teams so they kind of carried over but uh these are some of the
old mll logos and they're kind of fucking sick the the sf dragons i saw a lot of people hoping
that they are going to be kind of the rebrand for the california redwoods and new york i mean that
logo stinks but well i mean it kind of but i like the dragon and i like the purple it's very um
sacramento kings forward it is a little bit it is but the lizards that shit rocks the connecticut
hammerheads that's dope are there hammerheads in connecticut i don't think so but it's still
awesome yeah what famously uh hammerhead sharks of uh connecticut fame connecticut yeah but but
it's uh it's uh yeah they're in boston throwback week and i love like this was the prime of sports
logos in my opinion so bringing them back one the this one in the center here yeah i don't really
know i can number that looks like that is
that's a interesting logo uh i do like the i assume that's houston launch
bottom right with the spaceship florida launch florida launch well i guess that's the yeah the
other place that would make sense for a team named launch yeah the la riptide logo is pretty sick kind
of kind of san jose sharks forward uh but yeah i said they're in boston this week kind of wish i
was still there uh but i just i love throwback shit it's awesome always awesome is is the uh the
b on the left side is that the cannons i don't know i don't believe so it doesn't include the
cannons or the outlaws okay this was uh this is a post from the lacrosse network asking which
teams you want to see uh come back um i believe the b might be the uh barrage the bridgeport barrage
okay that's a pretty sick logo i like that one i was hoping that it was the cannons because i would
absolutely get my hands on no no cannons the cannons are using their own throwback logo from
mll okay oh somebody said the redwoods are doing
the la riptide that rocks that the the shark logo need more sharks and sports but yeah big
week for the i'm i'm i'm bummed that you're not around uh for this sean but should i get on flight
i'm gonna i'm gonna head down there should i get on flight they're playing at harvard
obviously lacrosse school um i don't know i to the to the surprise of absolutely no one that
was such a thing as a pll until about 10 minutes ago this is not cross my red is this on the ocho
right after slam ball dude it's no they play it's got main espn abc on saturday nights yeah abc
it's they play we love bring back the sting put them in a box put them in a rink let's throw guys
up against the glass with a stick that i will watch this i get let the goalie get some pads
give him a chance like good god that's my problem with the
cross that is my big problem the goalies have no fucking chance i don't know chance who in their
right mind like obviously goalies are always crazy in any sport they're a little crazy and
especially at a cross you're getting a piece of concrete basically just whipped at you with no
padding bare legs they've got no chance i don't like people that thought it to be lacrosse goalies
are are truly a different breed so when you say throwback jerseys when when was the throwback
to like for me finding out a league just exists literally today what are we throwing
back to so popular that you two you two couldn't name five of the goddamn logos on the sheet well
so the mll what are we throwing back to ll doesn't exist anymore mll was a league that struggled a
little bit as a professional lacrosse league how long ago like a year ago 10 years ago they the mll
uh ended in so it started in 2001 and then it folded in 2020 it kind of merged with pll oh my
god 20 years yeah it was on for 20 years yeah but it didn't it never really took off and that's why
came around better better salaries or health care there's sorry there's some really interesting lore
between the mll and pl because i believe that paul rabel like broke off from the mll to start his own
league and then like kind of went at it with uh pll versus mll for like a couple of years and mll
like really didn't take them seriously and then they just got swallowed up by the pll so like
that kind of shit like an oral history of like the pll versus mll would be fascinating to me i hope
that somebody i hope that it exists and if it doesn't exist i hope that somebody does it soon
yeah yeah they uh they went head to head with the pll with their the mll the pll did and the pll was
just better in every way like they were on espn they had better health care better salaries better
resources and they got a pd said or pete said mll was like fucking good luck buddy and they had good
luck and they they entered the mll so uh well they
merged technically so they still kind of well technically and chat chat's pointing it out i
i remember seeing this that like the mll tried to be like okay rabels because i think it's paul
rabel and his brother yeah okay rabels you you've established yourself you've made your point we'll
buy your league and we'll merge it and uh pll was like nah fuck you guys uh we're we're on track to
be able to buy you in like a year and they did and that shit rules pd is like a messy bitch yourself
i feel like
you would really love how this whole this whole league came to be
a messy you're a messy bitch and you're uh a a real expert in poorly run organizations
so i feel like this is right up your alley this is a buddy yeah that's another i'd write a book
but nobody'd read it because no one gives a shit about what happened here but there's a
fucking disaster here in arizona you're telling me from day you're telling me that nobody would
read a book about how you did it you're telling me that nobody would read a book about how you
fucking stupid and messy and just completely arizona i'll read a book on the ineptitude of
anything never mind and i will tell you that your sports organization that just fumbled time and time
again and i was ironically enough i literally was on the inside in the coaching room from 1997 to
2020 there are stories they and and i i would have a lot of them so yeah i maybe people would
read i would never work in hockey again if i told i had wayne gretzky as a head coach for five years
those are stories i would have a lot of them so yeah i maybe people would read i would never work
in hockey again if i told i had wayne gretzky as a head coach for five years those are fun times
those are fun times i had owners that went through issues with drugs and prostitutes and yeah
i had owners that went through issues with drugs and prostitutes and yeah there would be some fun stuff
there would be some fun stuff
there would be some fun stuff and i think maybe somebody would read it maybe you wouldn't
the tell-all would go
crazy in hockey circles
I guarantee it
yeah I guess the discussions
on how Phil Kessel and Taylor Hall
comes to the Arizona Coyotes yeah there might be
some fun maybe we'll John Chayka's
initial meetings yeah okay
maybe we'll get together with a ghostwriter
they might be fun get Craig I bet you
Craig would write that book
I bet you Craig would write that book
I did not sign an
NDA at any time but yeah
thanks Claire Claire Bear no NDA
so we'll talk someday
I did want to bring up Petey
you put this on our radar yesterday
speaking of the Coyotes and John
Chayka John Chayka has
hired Sidney Crosby's long
time strength and conditioning coach
to run the sports
performance department
for the Maple Leafs apparently
this is like kind of his white whale
it is
because when we talk about what
sports performance is
and what it has changed
to O'Brien
Andy O'Brien for the Pittsburgh Penguins
won Stanley Cups there by the way
if you say a member of your staff
that isn't on the ice or behind the bench
helped you win a Stanley Cup buddy
chill a little bit like the equipment
managers are very good but they're not
the reason that the Florida Panthers
are hoisting a cup so when you say
the sports performance guy
100% without a doubt
but but but you talk
about you talk about a power skating coach
that had Austin Matthews dude you had
one guy that was a power skating coach
really good so O'Brien is good and he's
knowledgeable and people really really
like him but he's not moving the needle
like a coach or a player he's not he is
going to help oversee everything okay
fine the problem with John Chayka and
Andy O'Brien and no one's going to care
about the story but I'll tell it anyway
so John Chayka wanted to bring Andy
O'Brien John Chayka's background was the
the performance coach or whatever you
want to call for Max Domi he worked out
with Max Domi when he was just out of
college that's how he started his whole
NHL career because of his his workout
and how you got Max Domi to work out so
he's very into this world of performance
and working out and Andy O'Brien was the
white whale at that time he wanted Andy
O'Brien to join the Arizona Coyotes
desperately a franchise with no money
and no staff and you know let's bring in
a guy and by the way I won't say the
dollars but he would have been the
highest paid guy behind the scenes
except for the head coach every equipment
guy every other assistant coach dude was
gonna get paid and in the interim
getting ready to sign him he let go
one of my best friends who was in charge
of the medical department at that time
and fired him because we're bringing in
Andy O'Brien well guess who didn't come
Andy O'Brien because we couldn't meet
his demands and now we don't have our
head medical guy who I loved who went on
to win a Stanley Cup in Washington
shout-out Jason service lost his job
over Andy O'Brien and now to see ten
years later Andy O'Brien resurface in
Toronto and not only come to Toronto
bring all of these guys with them
doctors and trainers obviously it is
going to be interesting to see how
important and how big of a deal Andy
O'Brien can really really improve the
fitness of a professional sports team
because I tell you what the Toronto
Maple Leafs were spending for
performance and and off ice
conditioning and trainers prior to John
Chayka I hate to tell you they had one
of the biggest departments in the league
why because they could and they had
money and I guess what they're all
reading the same damn books so to think
that this is the this is the mythical
guy that's gonna put them over the top
and win a cup you're out of your mind
thank you for your yeah this is
brilliant this is like first of all I
trust Sidney Crosby in his his selection
but he isn't this way Pete is he not
Sidney Crosby if he if if he works out
with somebody else like if it's the if
it's a strength guy wasn't they have ten
cups why doesn't he want to go to
another team that he wins another cup
there like why doesn't the power skating
coach that taught Austin Matthews how to
skate how come he isn't successful
everywhere else like because I don't
know but it's the player yeah like to a
certain extent of course but like I've
seen Sidney Crosby like in street clothes
and that dude is built like a fucking
like mega fridge and he's obviously been
productive for a long long period of
time over the course of an NHL season or
NHL career so like his his strength and
conditioning coach and performance coach
is doing something right like I just
don't I don't know where does his
commitment to the sport make does his
commitment to the sport and his ability
to put in the time and effort and focus
solely on hockey make the performance
coach better because because I think
they're all selling the same formula
they're all selling the same mystery
drug they all do the same thing it's
it's the athlete that makes those people
there is nobody that prepares I'm telling
you Sidney Crosby is different and he is
different in how he prepares on and off
the ice to his focus on NHL is it's
elite he's not out at the bar sipping on
sodas late night after a game he's not
he's watching the film so I agree but
that's part of the reason why I'm like
at face value I'm accepting this guy as
like sharing somebody worth investing in
because Sidney Crosby if he if he felt
like there was a guy out there that
would get a better performance or better
results out of him he would hire that
guy so this guy's being Sidney Crosby's
longtime strength and conditioning and
performance coach says to me that he is
trusted by the guy who cares the most
out of anybody in the league that I
think that I would recognize fair that's
fair I will give you that there's part
and parcel hand-in-glove all those
things are probably true so I want to go
a higher Connor McDavid's guy can I hire
him I don't know who he is because we
don't talk about him but let's go hire
him I'll tell you what Sidney Crosby and
Connor McDavid don't look the same in
street clothes I've famously a body
mugged Connor McDavid in a in a photo at
one time and it didn't look good for him
that's fair you're you are you are
partially right I I do think that that
one makes me so bitter as all of these
things do it's personal like I have a
problem with with the John Chayka's
management in Arizona I have a problem
that one of my one of my really good
friends that I thought was really good
at his job was forced out and had his
family have to move because he was
forced out by I know Brian that never
actually materialized so I have personal
bias there is absolutely no question
about it and maybe I get an opportunity
to get a little chip off my shoulder
today so so thanks for the forum what
chaos
here's the Sean DePauw's contribution
this conversation Pittsburgh Penguins
better not suck to start that season I
don't want to hear I don't want to hear
least fans talk about it they will but
he's not there though but Sean he's not
there anymore like he's he's not in
Pittsburgh anymore this is far removed
he's been out of Pittsburgh for a while
well and I don't think that's gonna stop
these fans no no but he's a personal he
is Sidney's personal trainer you don't
think that's gonna continue like I think
he will still be Sidney's off-season
trainer unless there's something
written in his contract or he's not
allowed to do that but I believe he will
just like John Teich is owner of a
statistics company that helps every
other team in the league I think there's
a concern there but no one else seems to
care that a company owned by the general
manager of one team is providing data
and information to help other teams
succeed dude what's that so this is the
same thing I still think Sidney cries
we're gonna train with him in the
offseason that's just my opinion I'd be
training with them in the regular season
when they trade them to Toronto at the
deadline there you go these fans along
with McDavid I think it McDavid and
Crosby where's the cap oh never mind
that's a different we already did well
Crosby's only making 8.7 famously
chat's asking for the pick of me body
mogging Connor McDavid I I got a show to
run here today maybe if DJ was hosting I
would be able to find it for you but I'm
sure one of the sleuths I'm sure he YG
can can dig it up or something it's just
like me interviewing Connor McDavid and
my arms look great breaking news I'm going to
see what happens breaking news Stefan
digs is set to sign with the Washington
Commanders okay for a Viking and Buffalo
Bill I thought he was gonna come home
come on the body was gonna sign with like
the Paul Cruz team in the longest yard
because I still on the table I think
it's still on the table but yeah I kind
of wanted to be a Buffalo Bill again a
little bit if he was gonna be out of
the game but I don't think he's gonna be
out of the game but I think he's gonna
be out of the game but I think he's gonna
be out of the game but I think he's gonna
Chicago Blackhawks? Dude, the black and blue division, the Norris division back in the 70s, are you out of your mind? Those two franchises hated each other. I went to a few of those games at the Met Center in Minneapolis. Dude, the brawls, the stick swinging, the jumping off the bench, there is no more hate for two teams in the Norris division than between the Minnesota North Stars and the Chicago Blackhawks.
If I'm a Blackhawk fan right now and him going full North Star regalia, out of my mind. I might have to check him off of the fandom list. That's deep. Why did you do it? Do you need to do that? I don't think you do. I love it. Let's go.
One point from the chat that I hadn't considered would be maybe this is him pissing on a grave. The team doesn't exist anymore. This was in Minnesota.
To utilize the defunct team's logo, turn it into your custom brand, and just be like, what are you going to do about it? Your team doesn't fucking exist anymore. It's public domain. I'm laughing in your face that your team doesn't exist. That, I think, would be good behavior from a Blackhawks fan.
I do, and that's full wrestling. That is full wrestling. Then I'm in. I'm in. I'm in then.
It's also just how wrestling goes. They pander. The faces will wear gear of the local style.
Stuff. Heels will come out in a jersey of the rival team. It was a couple weeks ago in AEW. I believe it was Tommaso Ciampa, who is a Boston guy. He's a wrestler. They were in Boston, or they were in Montreal, and he put on a Bruins jersey, brought out a stuffed yuppie, and just started beating the shit out of it just because he was a heel, just to piss off the Montreal crowd. I love that kind of shit.
I'm going to guess.
He just wanted to put on North Star shit because he's a hockey guy. They probably didn't think about it too much because I'll be honest with you. Never once considered. I was born in 1998. He's older than me. He was born in 78, but never once considered that there was beef between the North Stars and Chicago. That was not a thing that I knew.
I get what you're saying, and I definitely agree. Pandering is a part of wrestling, and when they visit these places, they pander to the crowd.
That's cool if part of your personality and persona, both on and away from the sport, is tied to a specific team. Punk is a massive Blackhawks fan. That's what I knew him for more than anything because I'm not a wrestling fan.
I don't understand why he didn't pander. If you're pandering, you're playing at the Vikings stadium. Put on purple and gold. I guess if he's a real Chicago guy, you really can't do that.
This was the one opportunity for him to pander.
I don't understand why he didn't pander without repping a team that actively is a rival with one of his teams. You can't do Vikings. You can't do Wild. Not that the Wild and Chicago are massive, but this was his one opportunity to do something that doesn't actually have any kind of ramifications still, I guess.
It's a good jacket, though.
Great jacket.
One more thing, Sean, I'll throw out there because you weren't a part of this. I actually attended this game on April 13, 1993, the final game at home.
It was in Met Center. If you don't know Met Center, Sean, phenomenal. White, green, yellow seats. No rhyme or reason. They just put them in a random pattern. Phenomenal. Go check it out. It's in Ice Castles, the movie back from the 80s.
But they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks at home, 3-2. So their very last game as a North Shore. And not only did that game they lose, it put them out of the playoff contention. So there's even more hate between those franchises. And Andy Belfort got the win for the Chicago Blackhawks. So, former teammate.
Sean, do we have a slate tonight?
Nope.
Oh, that's sad. So sad.
I mean, you can watch baseball. I don't know what's going on. I'm just assuming the Sox are playing the Sox again tonight.
Unfortunately, the Red Sox being good have reminded me that I canceled or paused my Fubo subscription because I'm like, ah, I'm probably not going to watch too much Red Sox this summer.
Now I feel like I think I got to resubscribe.
I got to resubscribe to Fubo to watch the Red Sox every night. I just can't wait for hockey to be back.
I will say I did see that this is like, I think maybe the fourth or fifth time all year that the Dodgers are going into a game as dogs playing the Cubs tonight. They're underdogs. And I believe they are six and one in those games where they're underdogs. So, shout out Sports Interaction again.
One more, Sean. One more, Sean, for the slate. Kelsey Plum and the Phoenix Mercury newly acquired.
Shout out Kelsey Plum, man.
Atlanta, Dream, and Angel Reese tonight. So, that's a big tilt. Mercury acquires Plum. She's one and oh as a Merc.
Plum came. Plum, having not played in, I don't know exactly how long, gets off the plane. Next day, drops 20.
I might have to be Mercury down because I think I got Mercury poisoning in Hawaii from all the fish today.
Hot copper can hoop. I'm telling you.
I mean, that seems like, oh, are you going fucking crazy?
No.
I just ate so much fish in Hawaii.
As one of us?
Yeah, it was truly spectacular. The food was unbelievable.
I'm Mercury down. Shout out Diana Taurasi.
I am.
That's my goat.
Yeah, Dewan Bonner.
Shout out Olivia Miles.
Olivia Miles about to win MVP as a fucking rookie. She's going bonkers, dude. That shit rocks.
Bring her to the links. I like her. Minnesota, that's my home. Again, we're talking about home state leading the way in the WNBA. We'll see.
We do a little pop culture corner.
Here, P.D., I know you have thoughts on. Did you see Spider-Man?
People hate my pop culture takes because I clearly am not part of pop culture. I don't participate.
Spider-Man, dude.
No.
This is, by the way, a massive old man yells at Cloud Take incoming from P.D.
It is.
What the fuck happened to Spider-Man?
He goes, no.
Dude, no.
You know why?
You know why?
Peter Parker's a teenage kid.
Struggling through life and fighting one guy at a time in the streets in New York.
That's Spider-Man.
Multi universes?
What the fuck happened?
Like, how am I supposed to follow that?
The Marvel Universe wants the guy put the jewels in his thing and killed half the. Dude, I was done.
That was it. Turned it off.
I'm done.
I can't decide who's alive, who's dead, what generation, what planet I'm on, what universe I'm in.
Done.
I promise.
I'm done.
Like, give me him fighting in the streets with one guy.
Maybe two in a movie.
Like, the early Peter Parker.
Finding his way.
Awkward, teenage, geeky kid.
Tobey Maguire.
Here's my special. Dude, I don't know how to handle life.
Not alone how to fight against. Like, that's a superhero to me.
What they do now?
I literally need, like, a roster or an org chart to figure out what the fuck is happening in these movies.
Because I don't know what planet I'm on.
Who did what?
Who's alive?
Who's dead?
Like, don't kill superheroes.
Keep them alive.
Like, what are we doing?
I'm done.
I'm absolutely done with the highest grossing superhero movie.
Movie of all time.
And I'm done.
Petey, I think that you thought you were going to be on an island here.
But I'll tell you what.
I'm a lot closer to being where you are than you'd expect.
Like, I've got tickets to see the new Spider-Man movie tomorrow.
Like, I'm always going to be interested in, like, Spider-Man, Batman.
Like, the big superhero movies.
But where Marvel started to lose me was when they started making it, like, required viewing in a lot of cases.
To see all of their fucking movies.
In order to see any of their fucking movies.
And that, to me, is some bullshit.
I should be able to tap in and out as much as I want to.
And I think that that was the case in the earlier Marvel movies.
Now they're so interconnected that I feel like I need a crash course.
And I need, like, a whiteboard with pins and yarn connecting all these different things.
And now you can't get, like, any superhero movies that doesn't have crossover.
With some other superhero jumping in.
Like, go back to basics.
I want a Spider-Man movie.
Like, Tobey Maguire having to, like, his best friend's dad is trying to kill him.
Green Goblins.
Great movie.
And beyond that, Sean, they're not trying to destroy the world.
Why does every goddamn movie have to destroy the universe?
Like, they're going to swallow the planet.
Dude, let's fight on the streets for a bad guy that wants to get the money.
Look at the Joker.
Like, I still put that.
The Dark Knight.
If you don't put the Dark Knight as one of the.
The premier top goaded superhero movies, I think you're just wrong.
But that's just a guy.
Like, it's one guy.
He's not trying to eat the planet.
Like, come on.
We're not eating planets.
We're not destroying the universe with a flick of a button.
Dude's trying to get power and money because he's loopy crazy.
Even the last Batman with, what's his name?
Pattinson.
Who I don't like, by the way.
That movie.
Incredible.
Incredibly dark.
And it was personal.
It was more of a story of, hey, look at my CGI.
It's more of this.
Guys with this inner turmoil fighting one crazy lunatic.
And it's not that it's real world and it really could happen.
But it's like, yeah, it's one guy with a dark history fighting another guy with a dark history.
I'm in.
I'm buying in.
I'm watching it all day long.
This universe blows up.
Come on.
Move on.
Spider-Man.
Teenager.
Lost.
That's what I want to see.
First off, I just want to say I was lost with the MCU when they announced Robert Downey Jr.
as a separate second character in the MCU.
I don't understand how that fucking works.
Especially when it's Robert Downey Jr.
And I would argue that, like, his Iron Man is the most foundational superhero of this modern MCU.
Agreed.
So, I don't understand.
like robert pattinson wait there was no reaction from pete when pd said he doesn't like robert
pattinson i i spaced out you don't like robert pattinson i i'm not in love with with with with
with him but i think he's my favorite actor but here's i'll go this far i uncommonly pete i i
think there are a lot of people in that entertainment world that i'll go gosh i don't really like that
guy but i like almost every single movie he's in is that a fair statement and i don't know why i
don't like him maybe because he's more handsome than i am maybe it's just an interpersonal problem
that i have just like i had with john chica maybe that's what i have with robert pattinson maybe
maybe it's my problem and not his because because he is outstanding that's me with michael b jordan
i i think i like all of his movies i think he's a dog shit actor and i can't i think i don't think
he's yeah fair i don't think his movies are great i don't think that case holds up at all with no
he's a great actor he's a great actor i think robert pattinson fucking rocks yeah i just maybe
it's because he came on the scene now sorry sorry i think robert pattinson right now is on a trajectory
where like at a certain point in time we all just agreed that like leo was the best actor going in
hollywood for a number of years i think that right now robert pattinson is in the conversation with
like maybe two three other guys for like the best actor in hollywood and he's young and alicia hit
has shown a very very strong aptitude for picking good projects and i think that twilight
has allowed him the freedom that's what it was pick the the projects that speak most to him
he can be an indie guy he can be a big blockbuster guy i think that he's got incredible range he's
got comedic chops i think that robert pattinson like him and gosling have the entire world as
their oyster for like taking on literally any project that they want i will not take any
robert pattinson slander i think he is generational but wait wait wait but
wait i i i i i i gotta back step just a little bit i i think his acting performances are phenomenal
his his acting in batman was it's second only to the joker in the dark knight hey honestly it was
outstanding performance of that dark inner turmoil of his parents getting murdered and i saw that in
batman for the first time in a long time i i think he might have been the best batman and that's hard
for me to say with what christian bale did i i think alicia hit it in the chat just a little
bit ago it's twilight bias oh my kid was a tween during twilight and i think he's the best batman
i just think i was inundated with that world and maybe that's what it is because i was at that time
a 40 year old man i just didn't get it werewolf worth of vampires again good movies and i watch
them i think that it is alicia hit it it's twilight bias and again it probably is green monster dude
dude was one of the most successful actors of his time he's an outstanding actor i backpedal a little
bit but i just he's the guy that i go gosh i'm not sure i like him or not so maybe maybe i think
the twilight of it all maybe you are more impressive to me that's what i was gonna say
like it's hard for a lot of people to escape that no i hate twilight twilight is the worst
acting i have ever seen in a movie in my entire life outside of like the room i've never seen a
twilight movie but i think that him being in twilight and sort of the uh the uphill climb
that might exist as a result of being in twilight uh in terms of public perception like the one that
i think makes what robert pattinson has done even more impressive fair and that's fair i think that
pattinson just
like kind of has it as far as movie star goes and like i don't know a lot about robert pattinson
outside of his work which i also kind of hold as a positive and a credit to him as an actor because
it allows him to just be whatever character he's playing instead of me just constantly seeing him
as robert pattinson like when i talk about tom cruise and how like he has managed to like retain
this movie
star aura and this movie star mysteriousness that attaches itself to him i feel like pattinson kind
of has that too and he's just done so well at being at the center of massive projects
and kind of up uplifting smaller projects in the last like 10 years so i i think that
there's there's a very very short list of people that are higher than him right now i i pete i i
i'm willing to say when i've made a mistake i i'm one of the first one of the the things i taught my
son if you make a mistake own up to it and tell people you made a mistake i don't think it's a
mistake i will i think it's a valid i'm not making a mistake come from but i'm going to open the door
a little bit wider on the acceptance of of him i i promise i will i'm not i'm not there yet and when
i say the twilight bias i did think it put him in a box of here's what i am here's what i do and he's
he has earned the right to be outside of the twilight box now he has and so i will i will open
up and give it another chance and i'm going to open it up and give it another chance and i'm going to
give it another chance i'm not there yet but i will give him another chance i love this uh from
chucky mauger in the chat i didn't know that this was a thing uh pete you know nothing about his
real life because he lies about shit for no reason and it's hilarious oh a bunch of people also
confirming that like on his press tours he just fucking makes up shit about himself i mean there's
a clip that i see a lot where he's like i'm gen z or whatever and everyone's like no you're not and
he's like yes i am
and he just like he just says that he is because he is he seems hilarious like he he seems like he
doesn't take himself very seriously which is awesome because he's also i think he has like
he's one of the people that like hates uh method acting because it's just like it's people's excuse
to be a dick um like he rocks i also saw that this was a lot of people's first time being exposed to
my michael b jordan take i don't like that guy plays the same well it's a tough time to have
that take because he holds the oscar for best actor
which i think that you can so i i think that you can kind of hold hold court there like i don't
think it's indisputable but it is a tough time to hold the opinion that michael b jordan is a bad
actor i know i'm i'm brave though and i'm gonna hold on to it that that i will say you are going
michael b jordan thing might be uh black panther bias because i thought he was awful in that and
his monologue at the end of that movie i thought was so cringy and like unbelievable not in like
derogatory unbelievable like i didn't resonate with me uh but i think it's a tough time to hold
uh despite the fact that he was actually the lines the writing was awesome i just think he
plays the same character in every movie or like the same but vibe and it brings it back to the
superhero genre itself when you talk about the black panther and what it did for his career
pete are you going to spider-man the new one i am yeah i'm i'm always interested in spider-man
and i saw some people in the chat saying that this one is uh relatively contained as far as
marvel movies go so like i'm excited about that and like i thought that the the other spider-man
movies were pretty good and tom holland's been a pretty good spider-man i hold the opinion that
like kind of where sean is on michael b jordan i don't know if tom holland is a good actor i think
that he is a good spider-man i think that he's highly entertaining and highly talented but i just
don't know if he is like a top tier leading man in hollywood quality of actor and so i'm just gonna
i'm like i'm interested in that and i'm interested in keeping up with that so i'm gonna check out the
new spider-man i agree as an actor he personifies what i grew up as with spider-man like he is the
nerdy book awkward kid so that's why i like him and that's why i go to the dc universe and what
they did to my favorite superhero of all time when i grew up was flash and they've just absolutely
destroyed flashy whether it was in the justice league or a standalone movie it's not it's not
who flash was it's not the person and the character that he was they didn't bring that
snarky guy i was really disappointed in what dc has done
to him and and so i i wanted to bring my my universe's full circle i'm not loving marvel
for what they did but dc doesn't win any big awards either what they've done in their timeline
i'm uh i'm currently watching beef season two on netflix and i'll tell you what i cannot wait
to get back home and continue watching that because it has been really good
for any connections to season one pete do i need to watch season one to get season two you do not
it's a it's a completely different standalone then i'm in yeah i was also good okay i'm in i need
something new and and i will start that literally tonight over the weekend i sat down and binged all
of uh gary and the new season of the bear and i fucking love that shit i love that really yeah i
love that shit i love that show so much gary fucking did you watch gary like i thought i thought
gary was pretty good oh that was incredible i think john bernthal is like one of the greatest
actors of all time that guy fucking i mean
that's crazy but i love i love john bernthal but like you saying that michael b jordan doesn't
really have range and then saying way more than michael b jordan i mean but the difference between
michael b jordan and like i think they're similar and the fact that like i think michael b jordan
i'm never gonna get i'm sorry i'm never gonna get over you saying that michael b jordan doesn't have
range and then saying that john bernthal is one of your favorite actors here's the difference
fucking guy in everything that he's i agree including the odyssey i agree but it is
i think a way more believable when john bernthal does it and b i think john bernthal is cast better
he's never he's not cast as a leading guy and he's cast for roles that require john bernthal's
intensity and so like the scene of him in the bathroom in gary just that that almost brought
me to tears like i thought that shit was incredible um and yeah that guy's just on a fucking heater
and it's just like we got we got mikey backstory in the bear which i thought was awesome uh i
thought it was very very useful yeah
to have that context and i i i love john bernthal same i and i i
I know it's not as I know you and DJ don't necessarily like share this take, but I loved this season of the bear.
And I thought the only complaint I had was that I wanted I want to clear better come back.
And she never did. Sorry if that's a spoiler. It is a little bit.
But I tweeted in 2019 because I remember I had a specific Jon Bernthal take in 2019.
I tweeted, has any big name actor ever been in more movies for around five minutes than Jon Bernthal?
And I think that the tweet holds up pretty well.
It holds up amazingly. So many things for just like a couple scenes.
Yeah. I mean, that's what he is, obviously, by virtue of his character in the bear.
He does it a lot like he had one big scene in the Odyssey.
He was temporary in in Walking Dead.
Like.
Yeah. Yeah. But that's why I like it.
Like, if he was a guy all the time, I'd probably get tired of him.
Have you ever seen the peanut butter falcon?
No.
That movie is incredible.
Like, I was probably like my favorite movie.
I think it was like 2019 or around that that time.
That was like my favorite movie of the year.
It's Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson.
Two people who have.
Really just been like at different places in the court of public opinion.
I was going to say.
But but Jon Bernthal appears in that movie very, very briefly.
And that movie is so, so enjoyable.
Highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't seen it.
So there you go.
That's my take.
Yeah. See, my silence just precludes me to showing I again am not part of pop culture.
I just cannot participate in this conversation.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I just don't know.
I got my I don't watch any of these shows.
I did watch Bear a little bit, but I know nothing.
I know Jon Bernthal is, but I've got to be better.
I've got to be better.
I sit on Acorn and Britbox all night.
I'm watching the old British shows where they have a mystery.
Somebody gets killed.
Who done it?
I'm all about.
I'm not going to say names of shows because nobody give a shit.
Nobody knows.
But that's what I'm watching.
As soon as sports are off, I'm going to Acorn and Britbox.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
Chad's pointing it out.
Shia LaBeouf could have been in the conversation of like generational actors.
But I literally had this conversation the other day, derailed his career so bad.
And he just like obviously has had mountains and mountains of struggles away from from
the camera.
But he is early movies and unbelievable actor.
Yeah.
He was like, oh, good.
Sasha, like a heater to start his career as acting career.
And then like couldn't get out of his own way.
Couldn't get out of his own way.
Classic, classic story.
Yes, sir.
Have you ever seen the YouTube video?
Actual.
Oh, the Shia LaBeouf.
The.
Wow.
Fuck.
The actual Hollywood superstar Shia LaBeouf or whatever it's called.
I don't.
I'll have to show it to you afterwards if you haven't seen it.
I don't think so.
It was like my favorite YouTube video in the world when I was in high school.
That's not the one that's like he's just in the green in front of the green screen.
No, he's not in it until the very end.
It's like this.
Like.
Cinematic in interpretive dance performance about Shia LaBeouf.
And then it ends with Shia LaBeouf just having been in the crowd the entire time.
Like the only person in the cloud with him giving like a very intense standing.
Is that the clapping one?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
I have seen that.
Yeah.
I love that.
That's a famous meme.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then.
OK.
He turned into the world's biggest piece of shit.
Actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf.
Yes.
Because he's hunting somebody down in the in like the wilderness.
It was way funnier before he seemed like an actual not seemed like before.
He was revealed to be an actual abuser.
Not as cool anymore.
But I love that video in high school.
I have seen that.
It is incredible.
I can't believe that I wiped it from my memory.
Yeah.
All right.
I think that that that ought to do it.
Petey, remember when you said this might be a 30 minute episode?
Yeah.
I didn't make it to come out of your mouth.
We did not make it to the 30 minute mark that we.
Yeah.
Well, we did.
I should know better.
Four times.
I should know better by now.
Got 15.
I was going to say, I assume we have some super chats.
We can hit those.
Sean, can you do that?
Yeah.
First from non Yale Sharks fan.
Happy birthday to Will Smith's sister's friend's dog.
Via the what chaos discord.
Does what chaos discord chaos discord would say.
Yeah.
The chaos discard also pointed to the fact that we got a shout out on the
cesspit as family barbecue trade deadline live stream because somebody
asked that when are you going to start playing bop it like the what chaos
guys.
So we got a name drop on on a cesspit is family barbecue show.
So shout out those guys.
Another super chat from non Yale Sharks fan.
I didn't watch.
I didn't catch the whole live stream last week.
However, the interview was hilarious.
Lots of food.
Joe.
She coded questions.
What do I want to know what food Joe?
She is from from Yale from from somebody who we introduced us to the
term Yale also introduced me to the term, but I also learned that word
isn't in the old.
Or New Testament.
That sounds all right.
I don't know what's going on from Steph.
Ellen stays being our goaded queen.
I'm sure she'll appreciate that from I am.
I'm Sean Taggart.
I know you guys last couple of weeks talked about the other mommy movie
trailer.
Can I suggest if interested reading the book it's adapted from incidents
around the house?
Good good quick read.
If you're into horror and suspense reading horror sounds like a interesting
experience.
I don't think I've ever read like a horror book.
Yeah, I've always that's kind of I've always wondered how words have
managed to stir up those emotions in people like as they're reading it
interesting people scream while they're reading literature.
Yeah, right.
Oh jump scare.
Okay.
We this is clearly when we got to Dodgers talk because here are three
straight super chats from Renee.
First the Kings are paying for the Dodgers hubris.
It all comes back to the Kings.
And then well fuck you Renee.
Hey Pete and Sean Mookie and his three rings.
Say hi.
All right.
I mean like what am I supposed to say to that?
I like Mookie bet.
I want him to have World Series rings.
I love that guy.
You rock.
You fucked up the likability of him having those rings.
Yes, and then said allow me to defend my Dodgers you cowards.
There you go.
They were pretty in defense.
Well again, the Dodgers are defensible just the system's not I don't have
any that.
Yeah, like for now.
Hey, I again like Dodgers fans can talk all the shit.
They want because you have all the best players and we hate you for it
and it's pure jealousy and it's pure annoyance.
There's definitely a different world in which I would thoroughly enjoy
the Dodgers.
It's just not this one.
Shout out the multiverse from load-bearing wokeness.
Thank God college football is on the horizon to deliver us from
these greedy capitalist professional sports leagues.
Hashtag go.
I was gonna bring it up with the PLL talk.
You see that lawsuit that went through in Colorado where all these the class
of 2022 or whatever has like they're getting a fifth year of eligibility.
So there's people and part of that lawsuit was Joey Spallina of the
Maryland Whipsnakes.
So now technically he has eligibility to return to college but his art
but has a professional contract in the PLL very fascinated in how that's
all going to work out but nothing means anything anymore in college sports
generic red circle so excited for when all the league's top players are
bargaining their no movement clauses to move to Florida Tampa and
Houston in parentheses derogatory going to be real tough.
Look for the Dallas Stars of the Houston whatever or Austin whatever
instantly become a destination has got the taxes are the excuse.
They're not an excuse anymore.
Feel like Dallas is a destination though.
Like I mean like didn't didn't Larkin have Dallas on his list.
That's what Eileen had said earlier.
I didn't see that.
But I don't know.
Yeah, like I don't think they're not not a destination.
It's just something seem like people are they're not getting mentioned like Vegas
is but I guess they haven't won yet.
So that's probably why honest as Anna Reeves writes PD book fun from one author
to another I put in the one exactly another part writer supporting writers.
Yes, Emma Haven.
I started rereading lonesome Dove.
What book in the series should I read next?
Love you guys and go Sharks.
Okay, so I can answer that one lonesome Dove.
There's a couple of ways you can do it.
I but I obviously recommend.
Do you recommend doing lonesome Dove first?
That was my experience and it was the first one written in the series.
So I would recommend lonesome Dove and then either going to let me just pull up.
I would recommend doing lonesome Dove and then going to dead man's walk,
which is the first in chronological order then doing Comanche moon and streets of Laredo.
That's basically going three one two four,
which is how I did it and I really enjoyed it or you could do.
You could do lonesome Dove streets of Laredo and then dead man's walk Comanche moon,
which is three four one two.
You can kind of like Star Wars it but definitely start with lonesome Dove and either going
chronological order or in three four one two.
Okay, Stephanie Mills says blessed with PD two weeks in a row.
My hot take King.
Thank you for gracing us with your presence.
Wow, that's how does it look?
You're on the show more than I am at this point.
I buddy, you know, I have been I have been that we talked
about my jealousy and my green-eyed monster it started way back with you guys when i was still
at ph and x and they were talking about doing a national hockey show with the all city networks
at that time and i'm like dude man i've been in the national hockey league like 20 years like maybe
maybe my name might come up maybe and then like who what and then i'm just saying i'm just telling
it like i thought that's all just lore dropping that he's hated us from day one like these
fucking assholes so what i did is i tuned in and just like i'm gonna do with robert patents and i
go shit these guys a knowledgeable and b and probably more importantly they're damn fun so
they they where hockey meets entertainment i've said it since day one is what chaos so i love it
here i feel like uh i'm doing my best to become a whatnot and and i i'm thrilled when i get that
text from pete or dj saying hey you got any time because i honest to god this is the most fun i
ever have sitting behind a microphone so thank you guys for including me i i love coming on and
being a part of the chaos and
you're truly welcome on the show literally anytime you're the best uh from fatima i did
an mcu day yesterday by watching black widow thunderbolt and fantastic four for doomsday prep
now i'm doing what if the what if series really intrigued me but that i feel like it's like a
it's like a series of like cartoon animated happened in this super so i believe like there's
one where like captain america is british yeah what if somebody else got different like there's
just different variations on
classic mcu things if that's if i'm understanding it correctly but i'm never i'm not being british
seems like a a real well that can't happen you know you got to change the whole name it's it's
an animated thing it's it's a it's yeah i mean it's different if you really really really need
more mcu content and by the way you're watching those three movies to prep for this movie
good lord well you might need to because like you said there's they're all so interconnected
there's very specific movies you need to have watched to understand what's happening in this
one movie gotcha hell if i know uh matt friend or foe does the mcu suck right now yes but will i
100 or 1000 be back in once the x-men arrive you bet your ass the x-men would do it for me
x-men i feel like has such untapped potential um stephanie mills are we excited for gosling
as ghost rider i didn't even know that was happening honestly i did see that somewhere
i don't really know it was on comic-con the announcement at comic-con yeah let's do it
he's the nicholas cage that was nicholas cage
right yeah i was gonna say it was yeah if gosling's attached i'm interested it's just kind
of where we are at right now yep fair um eric ripperson calling you out a little bit pete actual
cannibal shiloh buff was a brunch episode i i love that i like have i have no recollection of
like 80 of brunch episodes so i i love that like the brunt touchables are still alive and well
and just like telling me you talked about this years ago so at least you know i wasn't lying
when i said yes i've i've i've heard of that before i've seen that before um nathan mckinnon
shark candidacy dj's not here so i'll read your name correctly uh may or may not have
shouted you out on casuals shout out oh shit hell yeah i like katie no one reposted our uh
sabers banner night thing i i just appreciate that people i got a lot of i got i got defended
a lot in those responses by the way like let us let us have our fucking banner night
um another super chat from renee shohei lead off home run that's the thing that sucks
shohei i'm not gonna root against shohei i can never root against shohei people being like he's
a gambling addict no ipe was a gambling addict i i refuse to believe that shohei then by the way
do you hear the phone call there was release a release phone call of ipe pretending to be shohei
to try and get into shohei's bank account no crazy shit uh they someone interviewed his bookie
and they said within 30 days of of ipe placing his first bank account and they said within 30 days of
of ipe placing his first bank account and they said within 30 days of of ipe placing his first bank account

it has great character driven stuff it is no like no really bad drama stuff everybody gets resolved

james corden and if you haven't seen it it is now on peacock so you don't have to go to brit box
give gavin and stacy a try it spans over 24 years they take five years off between it's
phenomenal i don't believe this is a james corden podcast but uh it is also kind of like a
yeah stay over there and do your shit james corden like if you want to go over there
i'm glad he's doing stuff that i can ignore yeah i have no feeling about him outside of that show
so i don't know
don't know him don't watch it i have no idea about the guy he's not problematic that one show
i don't think he's problematic i just don't think i like i don't also have any feelings on james
corden i just think he's none zero i didn't watch his show here didn't watch i have a lot of feelings
on james corden and most of them stem from that video that he uh that he did the flash mob for uh
the beauty and the beast when that was about to come out they did a fucking flash mob don't know
middle of an intersection in la and he was like shaking his fucking dick as the teapot
in somebody's window as they were stuck in traffic like i think i would have went to prison i think i
would have went to prison if that was sorry i again i don't know the man i just know him from
this one project that is it i do you're allowed to like him pd it's not problematic that you like him
it separate the art from the artist that's fine yeah i appreciate that thank you um hey kid yeah
you says pd please come back so you and i can sit here with uh these kids these kids today
benign look on our faces
i do and i will say this and this is a from a place of love peace and love is that there are
times when i watch the chaos and you guys will talk about a particular artist tv show movie
and i go no idea like zero like never literally have never heard the name and that's when i feel
like maybe it's time happens to me on a regular basis you know how many bands that like pete and
entire lives specifically dj entire lives
revolves around that i had quite literally never heard of in my entire life prior to moving to
boston work on it does make me feel old it makes me feel sad and age is no joke by the way you guys
get there age is no joke man uh it already happens with me like i didn't know what the
fuck's givity toilet meant i don't know i didn't know what that doesn't mean anything that's all
that exactly yeah that's that's the problem at least when i was a kid and like there were things
stuff they meant something now you ask a kid like what this thing that you've never heard of is and
they're just like it doesn't mean anything it can be anything that's the joke about it which i kind
of love there's like this weird level of like self-awareness and like getting it that the youths
have where they're like yeah this doesn't mean anything and it pisses old people off that it
doesn't mean anything and like that's the fucking that's the joke that's what that's the rule that's
the goal now that's what we're doing here um and that part i kind of love it uh the david carlson
says blasting damn it on repeat for pd
happy birthday sean happy birthday david dude that we talk about music but buddy it's my
i've said this before on the show blink 182 all day long let's go like damn it and unfortunately
travis barker was not part of the very studio album of damn it he had not joined the band yet
but but his live performance of damn it is elite shout out to emma haven says my problem with
larkin is that he we're talking hockey again my problem with larkin is that it seems like he wants
one c money but he's not able to do it he's not able to do it he's not able to do it he's not able
slash wanting to pull a team himself which he would have to do in my opinion if he wants to be
a one c in this league well he's like he's like technically not making one c money anymore but
like if he fancies himself a one c we have way too much tape to find out that that's not the case and
i think like the biggest pushback that i saw in the conversation that we had regarding larkin
was me starting it off by calling him a superstar and like i honestly hand up he's he's not based
off of talent but i think just on the fact that he is the captain of the
detroit red wings one of the biggest franchises in in hockey like that would be the superstar
maker element of that of that point for sure um eileen pca home run weird happened over here
the true mvp a little maybe a little internet problem but uh i think we are good um
pca home run the true mvp pca is going crazy uh
i don't think shohei's pitching right now i haven't paid super close attention
so maybe he has a chance because pca is kind of a dog uh non-yay oh sharks fan is back to say

the dj's specialty is keeping a show on the rails but uh he he directs and manages the show very
well i'm willing to sit here all fucking day and just like chat while this thing runs so uh i mean
our last episode without you and with pd was two hours and 11 minutes the last episode with you and

Summary:
" opens the episode by expressing personal unease before going live, citing a comment that made him feel nervous—an unusual reaction given the show’s typically relaxed tone. He acknowledges the pressure of hosting, comparing it to his own preparation and emotional investment, and emphasizes that the show’s value lies not just in hockey but in offering fresh perspectives, especially from a near-60-year-old viewpoint.
