I'm your host, Cam Johnson, joined by co-host Tommy Alter. And today we're going to be going over some March madness stuff with John Fanta. Welcome, John. Cam, Tommy, great to be with you guys. Happy madness, everybody. It's that time of year where the tournament arrives. The big dance floor awaits Cinderella's slipper. Will somebody pick it up ahead of the clock strike at midnight? Who is going to be that final forward in Deanapolis? I am fired up. And Cam Johnson, your bracket better be ready to go. Ready. Let's get into this because because John's got a busy day. We all got busy busy days today. John, I want to start. Cam and I were talking about this yesterday. We wanted to just kind of run through the different brackets with you and kind of get your thoughts. Your thoughts overall. What are you most excited for? We're taping this before the tip. So what are you most excited for? Which bracket are you most excited for? What is your like? This is the thing that I have circled heading into Thursday. Well, there's a couple of things that stand out. And the first thing is in the East region. Think about this, fellas. John Shire, Dan Hurley, Tom Ezzo, Bill Self, Rick Patino, you know, how about even Mick Cronin and Jamie Dixon? They're all in the East region. All of them. You know, you're talking about hundreds upon thousands of wins between these coaches. So the East region is the region of blue blood and big time coaches across the board. The opportunity for a St. John's Kansas second round game. Whoa, Whoa, Zubi, Ejaforgan's, Florey, Badunga. And you know, the big elephant in the room in the East is okay, Darren Peterson. If he plays the level he's came beloved, Kansas could totally change his tournament. St. John says, "One 19 of their last 20 games." Guys, I was at the garden over the weekend for the biggest tournament. Kim, you've seen the garden wild or 20,000 plus people inside there for college basketball. That's what we're talking about with what they have done. So that's certainly intriguing to me. I'll give you a fun storyline for this tournament. You're going to feel the theater of it later this week. Nebraska has never won an NCAA tournament game. Never. Remember the year when Northwestern 1-1, you had Chris Collins, the coach, and Doug is dead and Doug's there in the crowd waiting, waiting, hoping you're going to have that theater this week with Nebraska. Michigan, how does Michigan respond from the loss of the Big Ten Championship game to Purdue? And then therefore, get this. The college all-time assist record is going to get shattered this week. Purdue, Braden Smith, he is one assist shy of tying Bobby Hurley's assist record. So there's another storyline. But the biggest of all Tommy and Kim is simple. Last year, we had no Cinderella. We had no upset that made you say, "Wow." And then you know the world we live in. Okay, it's because of revenue sharing. It's because of NIL. It'll never happen again. I'm here to tell you right now. We're going to have a couple of double digit seats win this week. I can give him to you. We're going to have a couple double digit seats win this week that make you say, "Holy cow." The upset will return. I'll throw you a fastball right off the bat. Santa Clara, the Broncos, with a top-quaint five offense in the sport are going to knock off the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round. I was going to ask you about that. Kim, what's an upset? I'm not as bullish on the upset market, but I do like Santa Clara as well. If I'm going to take one, but I think it's going to be similar to last year. I think the higher seats are going to prevail for the most part. In my opinion, I don't see as many upsets. But hey, that's why they got to play the games. What do you think about Akron, John? Well, they're an interesting team because they've got a bucket getter named Tavari Johnson. By the way, my other two first round upsets are USF over Louisville, which I don't even think is that big of an upside. I like South Florida quite a bit, the American champions. And you're not going to like what I had to say, but I did take the seat over Carolina here. Big tournament for your heels, the injury to Kayla Brutal. I wish that he was out there playing. I think it's a tough spot. If Carolina can win, there's that would set up a really compelling second round game with Illinois who's extremely talented. Not the best draw that the Tar Heels have ever had, but you never know the tournament. Let's talk about Akron. Akron has gone to the tournament now three consecutive years. As a result, they really know who they are. Bringing it up again, Tavari Johnson is a guard who averages over 20 points in five assists per game. They've got balanced scoring though beyond him. They got three other guys that are at least 10 points per game. Amani Liles is a forward who provides versatility. They can really score the basketball. And when you have a star and a veteran star like Johnson, that lends itself to you hanging around in a game. Now, Texas Tech, Texas Tech would have been a final four dark horse for me. Had JT Top and still been healthy. What's interesting about the Red Raiders is they're actually a better offensive team than they are defensively this year, typically that's the other way around. Donovan Atwells got to be a shot maker for them. He's got to come up big and you know, they're going to need Christian Anderson to step up. He had that slippage in the big 12 tournament. I think he's going to be all right for the NCAA tournament, but I expect this to be a game. You know, there's two 12s that I think have a shot here in this tournament of winning, winning their first round game. I think it would be Akron. And I think that the other one is high point over Wisconsin. Wisconsin has had a sensational season. No doubt about it. Nick Boyd and John Blackwell are excellent players. Wisconsin might be the most volatile team in terms of how you pick them. You could pick them to go in the final four. I would tell you you're not wrong. They could get there. But you guys know, it's a one game postseason. And that high point team's got players who went to the dance last year and I saw them play well for a while before they before they fell. When you get back there that second time around, sometimes you give a team problems. And Nick Boyd, I love him. Boyd and Blackwell, but Wisconsin defensively is not a great team. So I always ask with an upset candidate, do you have what it takes to score? Because if you can't score with these teams, you're not going to have a shot. Ken, what do you think about the East? Duke Yukon, Michigan State, Kansas, St. John's. We've talked a lot, you know, obviously we talked with Chris Shreddekoff weeks ago about Jay Hawks. Just from a pure name recognition standpoint, wattage standpoint, like John mentioned, you know, it feels sort of above and beyond. So what are your thoughts? I mean, I think it's great. I don't really, I don't really understand why the committee put St. John's as a five. But you know, they're as hot as any team right now. It seems like a really tough draw for a foreseed in Kansas. You know, you get through, you know, game one, 64 versus California Baptist. And if you win that, you're surprised. Happy birthday. Here's St. John's for you. I love a 12-5 upset. I think that's one of the, you know, 12-5s and 11-6s are if I'm going to pick one, that's what I'm going to go with in overall and just general trends. But I don't think Northern Iowa is going to knock off St. John's. I think St. John's going to move through. Obviously, I have my eyes on Ohio State TCU as puff is in that game and I played for Jamie in college. So that's going to be a fun one for me to watch. Duke, I think it's just going to be questions about their garple. I think everybody knows they're one of the best teams in the country. It's just going to come down to how well their, their guards can handle, you know, the pressure that comes with increasing game by game. I mean, I'll tell you what, I don't know if I'll say we'll get out around one, but Bruce Thornton is an elite college basketball point guard. I mean, you're talking 20 points per game on unreal efficiency and just controls the pace of the game for his team. I think Kansas is going to go as far as Darren Peterson leads them. I think if they want to get out of the first weekend, you're going to have to see some real, some real Darren Peterson magic. Go ahead John, you got something to say about that? I agree. I think it's a single, it's one of the biggest variables in the tournament, can't boom. Exactly. And yeah, just across the board, I mean, I think, I think East's East's where I have my eye on mostly for a weekend one. The Duke, John, are the Duke injuries concerning it all to you? Well, you know, a little bit, but, but it sounds like Patrick Gomba is making some solid progress and they can get through the first weekend. I mean, make no mistake about it. Cam's right. Like, if Duke meets either Ohio State or TCU, like TCU, you doesn't get enough credit nationally. Jamie has done a fantastic job there. He's made more tournaments than they had combined in a long, long time. If not, I mean, ever. I don't think that people understand the kind of coach that Jamie Dixon is. So I am going to give him his flowers, Kim. I know you won't. You certainly can attest to it too. But like, think about this. TCU since 2018, they've made five NCAA tournaments now total. Prior to that, from 52 to 17, they made seven. That's it. So basically over over 60 years, they made a combined seven. And they've made five in the last eight. So he's done a fantastic job down there at Texas Christian David Punch and Xavier Evans, along with Jaden Pierre, can all play and they're ready. I am looking at that eight, nine game. But for to your point, Duke, they'll get tested a little bit by the toughness of TCU or by the fact that Bruce Thornton is trying to keep his college career going. But neither of those teams can get past Cameron Booser. Cameron Booser is an all time winning player. Every high school state championship, he won. Every EYBL championship, he won. He'd stand, he did that too. He and Caden are winners in every single aspect of it. And when I look at that team, Isaiah Evans is an all-American caliber guard. And that to me, between him and Caden, along with the presence of sort of a Swiss Army knife, can come in and do a couple different things for you with Amenia, they are a team that Duke squad, that they just impose their will defensively. But as much as Foster's a loss, provided that they have Booser on the floor, it just feels like everybody else around him plays off that and they guard. I mean, Duke guards you at an incredible level. There are number two in Kempheim defensive efficiency. Michigan is one, the other reason why there are two is because Michigan's one because Michigan's size is so dangerous. I think to your point, like Duke's key variable was, do they have an idea? Even if perimeter shot making, can their guard play be at a high level? Evans has answered the bell. Now Tommy, where the injury comes up big is if Evans, let's say Evans has an off-game, Foster sometimes will pick up the pieces. Well, he's not out there right now. That's the only circumstances where he starts, they are. But I just, I have faith in this team and I think you're going to see them be able to between all these guys and I didn't even bring up SAR and all that he does. They're just so physical. They get up in you and they find enough scoring to do it. They can win it all and they are my pick to win the national championship to Duke Blue Devils. You've painted them. You've painted them. Look at that face. He's tried to, he's tried to, he's tried to come see what, what, you know what, this will be the last time I've ever on this show. You know, as somebody who's close to the situation, the Caleb Wilson injury really pains me because I think this North Carolina team was really starting to figure it out and was on the, they've had random unfortunate injuries all throughout the season and they've managed to stay where they needed to stay in preparation for this march until this Caleb Wilson injury. Now, I'm not saying like, you know, they're incapable of making a little run here, but man, does it hurt their chances? You know, it's really hard for me to endorse Duke in that way, but I'll agree and what I've watched Duke is extremely solid and the boot and Cameron Booser specifically is going to be a lot to handle in this tournament. And you know who else I've really liked in this, in the conference tournament run was Purdue. I really, really, really liked the way they handled Michigan and that big 10 final. And I thought it's really promising. You're talking about the preseason number one. And if they are, you know, starting to find, it's, I'm telling you right now, March is all about who's peaking at the right time. You get a St. John's team that's hot, maybe they make a run. But if you get a Purdue team that slipped up kind of towards the end of the regular season and at a point or in the middle of the season, but now caught their ground, they have experienced players. They have bigs. They have one of the best point guards in the country, one of the best players in the country in Britain, Smith, Shooter and lawyer. I think they can make a run. And this is a team that's been there before. This is a team that's done it. This is, I mean, granted you had Zach Edie on the floor, but Oscar Cluff played a great game in that big 10 championship. Kaufman Ren, last year, average 20 points in game, you know, he can score the ball when he'd be. So I just think Purdue is a team to keep my eye on. I mean, I lost to an Auburn team in 19 that was as hot as any team in college back to. Oh, yeah. And they came out and were just playing fast, playing with energy. This is a team that at one point was ranked in the top 10, early in season, probably got up to six or seven. And then just kind of slid down a little bit in SEC play, made a strong run this. C-Tornament, find themselves as a five seed and then just go crazy. And I mean, they hit three after three after three. And, you know, it's kind of just that where the energy is in a single elimination tournament, that's who wins. It's, you know, it's how it is. It gives you how we're feeling. It's after the fact if you're on the wrong side of it. But again, that's why we watch it. That's the magic in it. The best basketball minds I know don't just watch film. They obsess over it. They'll rewind the same possession 15 times because they cost something and it helped defenders footwork that unlocks an entire defensive scheme. That's the difference between knowing what happened and actually understanding the game. Same thing when you're building something that matters or making decisions with real stakes. And maybe the West is the region of energy to play off of you because Purdue comes off the Big Ten tournament championship, Arkansas is the SEC tournament champion. So they ride momentum in. A lot of people have felt good about that Wisconsin team and what they can bring the table. And Arizona, I mean Arizona is just unbelievable. They are a wagon of special levels. Jatin Bradley is just playing at such a high level. Brighton Burries and Co-Apeat, like I covered those guys on the circuit. They're winners in every way. Guys is so hard to be Houston, you know, multiple times. Houston, they walked into this year with four total big 12 losses, four total. And Arizona just took the torch from them, won the league and they beat them twice, which is really hard to do. And that's because they've got one of the things I love, Tommy and Cam. And Cam, I'd love to get your thought on this is like for a couple of years college coaches are just like, I'm just going to portal no matter what. And I'm going to get the old guy, it's junior senior, fifth year and that's what wins. And don't get me wrong. There's value to that play. Okay. There's value to the experienced guy who's been around the block and comes in transfers and is a game changer. That Tommy Lloyd said, the best high school freshman got to go somewhere and there's enough of them out there that they're not just going to go to Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas. So I'm going to recruit two and we're going to be able to get these types of guys. And guess what? He watched Co-Apeat on the circuit. He watched Braden Burys on the circuit. And if you watched those guys play EYBL and stuff, you would have seen what I saw, which was they won. They made winning plays. They were physical. They were tough. They actually played some defense and they're not a lot at sometimes at that level. They didn't care about who got the shine. And Tommy Lloyd said, I want those guys on my team. And I'm going to have Jayden Bradley doing his thing. I'm going to have Crevus on the interior. Car Chenkov as well. We're going to be, we're going to construct this roster with a blend. And I just think, Cam, that that's important still. Like, now what I find is the level of basketball at high school, it took some time with how your game, how the NBA has shifted. Now that shifts complete, right? With three point shooting and spacing to an elite level and volume. But as you know, there's still room. Like, now it's almost like starting to swing. Some teams like, well, we still need a big man. Oh, wait a minute. Should I wait for that? Or it's zigzag. That's basketball. Well, at that high school level, they've caught up. For a while, it was like, man, this whole new three point trend. Some of these kids are taking insane shots and they're not of age to hit them yet. Now it's like they start earlier and earlier and the trends have caught up. And now the level of one and done talent is absurd. This freshman class is incredible. So there's still room. There's more than enough room for the freshman. You not only compete, but win and you don't have to be like, oh, I'm going to do old school John Calipari. And we're just going to go seven freshmen. No, blend it. Blend your watch. But don't tell me there's not room for the 18 year old who's just a stud talent. >> Okay, so in a potential Arizona Duke matchup, why would you be so inclined to take Duke over Arizona? >> Because, it's a really good question. Because I think that what Duke does defensively and on the glass will make it tougher for Arizona to just dominate the interior, like they do against a lot of teams. And I think at that point, Arizona will have to knock down some threes. And that to me is where if they run into that, can they knock down those shots from distance? And will we see Isaiah Evans just fight out loose to Jaden Bradley and get out done by him and lose that head to head matchup? I think Evans can negate what Bradley does, vice versa. I think that Duke's physicality can get Arizona a little bit forced out from the interior when Arizona is on offense. And I just, it's a trust factor with Cam. I've watched this kid win too many big games. Remember the game few weeks back with Washington, DC, when they're playing Michigan. I remember it was like Michigan's best team in the country. Well, on Michigan's best day, I think they are. But that's not how basketball works. So it's a Cameron Booser finding ways to win. Hopefully gone but's healthy because without gone but that's where I would sway the other way. But I just think that they are like Malik Brown, he only averages just a little over four points per game. But he is that guy, I want to go to battle with that guy. And I think there's a little bit of a redemption arc here. There is one thing that Tommy Lloyd is battling. One, and that is he's never made it past the sweet 16. And sometimes that certain things linger. Like you have to show it. And I didn't have Arizona coming out of the West, Cam. I didn't. I picked Arkansas to shock them because I think the guard is talented as Darius A. Cuff Jr. Is he is playing like Kenba Walker in 2011 right now. So I didn't, I don't have the Arizona to match up head to head. I think the odds makers would have Arizona be like a two or three point favorite. But I'm going to side with two because of their defense. And because at the end of the day, they still have the best player on the floor. There are valid points taken across the board. Cam, I was going to ask where you thought A. Cuff ranked in terms of the Cal college guards. Hmm. Hi. Hi, it's hard to say exactly how high because some of these guys, you get a little NBA bias in there. You know what I mean? And some of these guys have done the career. But if you just look at strictly college production, I think the only guy you can't put him over is maybe D Rose. I mean, everybody, what he's been able to do is insane. And what the production, the shot making, the clutch ability and just raw numbers. Like it passes the eye test. You know, it's winning games at this right now. And I think the only person that it would be hard to put him over is Derek Rose. And, and you know, if they make a national championship run, which like you said, it takes a Campbell Walker-esque effort. But he's capable of that. And maybe it's a new conversation. He is something else. I mean, he's like a live wire with how he plays the game. He just can change it in a blink. And now Billy Richmond's playing some of the best basketball of his career. I like that, kid. You know, Cam, you'll like this quote. Ed Cooley who's at Georgetown now. But when he was a Providence, he was talking about a guy by the name of a guy who said opportunities in the league, Justin Manaya, a guy, really good defender. And he said, he's an unmade bad guy. I'm like, what do you mean by that? He's like, well, he just kind of gets out of bed. He just plays. Like, he doesn't need the ball on his hand. And he just goes. And you don't need to wind him up for anything. Well, that's what Richmond is. Richmond just, he is all over the place on both ends of the floor. And he makes things happen. Trayvon Brazil and DJ Wagner. DJ Wagner's playing, well, he's not like he's doing anything that's extreme. He stays within himself. He knows his strengths. And I almost think guys, how at Arkansas, he's got this chip on his shoulder. And the expectations aren't like they are. It can talk you, but that's a good thing because John knows how to, knows how to rise with that. And so I like the makeup on their team. And Arkansas, Wisconsin, second round game. If we got, there's two second round games we could get, right? You could get Carolina, Illinois. You could get Wisconsin, Arkansas. Sign me up for those. Tennessee, Virginia, the other one, because that'd be an absolute battle in St. John's Kansas. Those are the second round games you'd have to really look forward to. >> I would actually also like a BYU Gonzaga. >> Fun, great call. >> I think that would be fun. I think that would be a fun game. >> WCCE game. So that's a really, really good call by you. And DeBonza against DK. Hello. >> And we haven't mentioned him all day, right? We haven't mentioned him once, DeBonza. He's another guy that with this stage, with this opportunity, he could really spark some. >> 100%. >> He's going to be a tough out. BYU is going to be a tough out. He's going to be a tough out. >> Yeah, absolutely. And they lost Richie Saunders. They not lost him. I think they'd be a real dark horse in this thing. The one challenge they have is they got to play the first four winner. And you know, Kamen Tommy, sometimes a tournament's wacky. Somebody wins the first four game, which by the way, as we're recording, shout out to Dickie Vee and Charles Barkley. They're going to call that game together in the tournament. I think it's fun to see those guys getting together to call a game. That's good for basketball. It'll be a fun thing to watch. They're calling that NC State Texas game. For BYU, it's Kenne Guard. Like, Brayden Hoff and Graham E.K. They're men. They make things happen for Gonzaga. So BYU's got to defend. But AJ, AJ DeBonza. He can get to any spot. He can rise up against any defender. He's a special special player. Indeed. Do you think that there's in the Midwest, John? Do you feel like maybe outside of Michigan? There's anything else we should really be clocking? Yeah, I do. You know, Kentucky Santa Clara, which I believe is-- let's see, that game is I think early Friday afternoon. Yeah, that's going to be a really fun watch. You know, Iowa State, guys, for those who don't know, Tayman Lipsy, he's an area kid. He wears down his sleeve for Iowa State. When they recruited him, Kenne and Tommy, you'll love this. When they recruited Tayman Lipsy to Iowa State, they're like, guys, mom works at the school. He'll be a third string point guard. He's as good a point guard as you're going to find. Melon Mom Chillovitch and Joshua Jefferson. Josh Jefferson is an all-American. He's a phenomenal player. Keeping Iowa State no time like the present for them. Texas Tech can they overcome the injury to top and make a run at this thing? Because Akron's a real dark horse. Say what? Alabama Hofstra is going to be good. If you're a hoop said-- if you are a hoop said, find a homework assignment, which the people listening to this are hoop said, you better look up some highlights of Speedy Clackston. Speedy Clackston is the Hofstra head coach, NBA champion, wanted in San Antonio. That guy has done a marvelous job with the pride. They have two guards named Cruz Davis and Preston Edmine, who can flat out fill it up. On the other side is LaBaron Phylon. Phylon could change the whole Midwest region. That's how good he is. Alabama obviously dealing with some off-the-court stuff with Aiden Holloway. Where are they mentally? Hofstra is a dangerous team, guys. That is a frisky 4/13 game on the bracket. But I just-- unless Virginia, to me, Virginia, could make a run at this with Test to Ritter their freshman, I like Michigan's draw. Of the 4/1 seats, Michigan was my favorite draw. You know why? Florida's got to play Houston. Arizona could get Arkansas, Wisconsin, the Sweet 16, and Duke's got all those blue bloods with him, all those big-time coaches. Before we go, can we get one this weekend prediction? One, this is a thing that nobody is talking about. Do you think is going to happen in the next four days? John, do you want to kick us off? Yeah, I'll kick us off. I am going to say-- I think that St. John's does outlast Kansas. And so Darren Peterson gets knocked out in the first weekend of the tournament. And I think USF, after beating Louisville, is going to take Jeremy Fieres and Thomas O'Hall to the wire. So there's a bit of a-- I couldn't stomach picking against Thomas O and Michigan's state because I really like that team. But sometimes they can have some trouble scoring. Brian Hodgson is a coaching star. I think he's going to be the next head coach at Syracuse or Providence. That guy can flat out coach. So I'm going to go with Michigan State, But I expect USF2. to be in that game with a real opportunity to win. I really think that that'll happen. - Ken, what do you think? Close it up. - I'm not really one for the super hot takes. But I'm in it for some field good stories. Let's see Nebraska get their first NCAA tournament up. That should be celebrated. Let's see Miami, Ohio take this Mac at large bid. - A great one. - Right? - Let's see the take this Mac at large bid. Maybe, I mean, it's gonna be tough. It's good. You gotta give them all the credit in the world for making it this far, for being a Mac school and getting in that large bid. It's gonna be tough. They haven't been tested like this. But let's see, you know, let's see some March, some March magic there and keep it rolling. Otherwise, I don't anticipate too many upsets. I think it's gonna be pretty straightforward. I think it's gonna be one of those years where we see a lot of higher seas moving on. - Makes for a better tournament as we get deeper. - It does, 'cause it means the heavyweights really do mean. - Yeah. - Do you have a final for mine is Duke Houston, Arkansas and Michigan, and I got Duke beating Michigan in the final. - That's solid. That's solid. I'm gonna keep mine to the chest for right now. - We're gonna release, we're gonna release ours on Thursday, Thursday morning. We're gonna put them out. He needs a little more time. - Time to do more time to digest. - We're in the middle of it. You know, we're in the middle of a crazy stretch ourselves right now just with a handful of back to back and some travel in it. So, I'm still sort of my thoughts on the matter. But yeah, you know, and I'll tell you one thing. I'll tell you one thing, and I'm sure hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of guys can attest to it. When you're one of those teams that get upset and march as I have been, that's thing don't leave easy. It keeps you up at night wondering what if what we could have done and, you know, so no matter who it is, people who are watching the show, there's gonna be crazy emotion across the board. And again, that's why we love March. - Agreed. It is the best form of reality TV. It is the most-- - It's just do or die. It's just do or die. - Do or die. It is extra, I've been in the locker room when a season ends and a run ends for a player and there's real tears, have seen tears when there's a win because you keep it going. You live to see another hotel but Faye breakfast, Cam Johnson? - Yes, sir. Yes, sir, you gotta love it. John, man, thank you so much for joining us.
