The transcription covers the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, focusing on its most iconic moment: Zinedine Zidane's headbutt in the final. Zidane defends his actions, stating that apologizing would mean admitting the provocation was normal, which it wasn't for him, especially given his mother's illness. The tournament is noted as the last pre-social media revolution, with record viewership of 26.29 billion and 715 million for the final. Germany hosted as a reunified nation, but the bidding process faced corruption allegations, with claims of missing payments and involvement from FIFA officials like Sepp Blatter and Chuck Blazer. The World Cup saw many debutant teams, particularly from Africa (Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo), and a low goal average of 2.3 per match. The opening game was a thrilling 4-2 win for Germany over Costa Rica, featuring standout goals from Philipp Lahm and Torsten Frings. Overall, the tournament is remembered for its dramatic moments, new teams, and controversial off-field issues.
But if I say sorry, I'd also be admitting that he did himself was normal. And for me, it was not normal. Things happen on the pitch. It's happened to me many times, but I could not stand it there, because moreover, it is not an excuse. But my mother was ill. She was in hospital. The people did not know. If it was Kerkha, a regular guy, a good guy. Of course, I would have apologized. If I ask him forgiveness, I lack respect for myself. As all those I hold dear with all my heart. Those are a scathing words of French legend, Zinedine Sedan. This is, of course, the 2006 walkup, with definitely the most famous, infamous exit of a football and career in history. It's the greatest, sort of, a mic drop, as you were, of a player ever. Headbutting is well-themed, it's an astral stage. Yeah, an image in football history that he's just etched in everyone's memory and everyone's consciousness. And we've seen the video in footage of it, and we can get a gallon to it. I can't wait for it. This walkup is definitely one that we remember very strongly. Yes. 13 years old at the time in, or year eight in high school, we probably watched so much of this of this match. Probably the buildup would have been massive as well. This is going to be maybe the easiest one to talk about in terms of just knowing what happened. We've also got to be quite hard to talk about because we're not going to want to leave out much because there's lots of our core football memories are in this very tournament. This is, of course, that I said before, the 2006 walkup, the 18th World Cup. So we've only got, after this, four more World Cup rewinds to go hosted, of course, in Germany. So I'm not too far away from us at all. 2006, yeah. Football is taking on kind of a new game. I find like it's quite different from the game at the start of the Millennium by this point. Yeah. It's all going on. It is. It is. We're fully into the 2000s now. What football looks like there in the TV is a Shrindle football and everything being accessible. Obviously, the internet is far more prevalent, not still knowing what we've got today, but far more prevalent games are far more accessible. And certainly for teenagers at the time of which we were, this was a World Cup that you look forward to. The players were going to be good. The expectations were high. And for many, it doesn't let down. For some, it does. We're going to come on to what people think of the tournament actually later. But definitely, as you were talking about beforehand, it's one that you can near enough remember every little bit of it. Definitely. So there were a last year in the year of the World's World Cup. It's kind of the last one pre-social media revolution as well, isn't it? So it's the last one without the crazy levels of coverage. Yeah, yeah. Twitter's not quite there. Yeah, oh, we just got basically that. No, we've basically got it. So yeah, there we-- My space. Yeah. Bebo. We call the old social media. And the end of the year for quite a few players, too. This is the last World Cup. It is. And the star of a journey for two very famous players as well. Very lovely. Lovely stuff there. Fantastic. Right. This World Cup stands as one of the most watched events in television history, Garner and Estimate 26.29 billion views over the course of the tournament. Wow. Insane numbers. TV is massive now, isn't it? The youngest point, even a bit of cat-chepper's dancer, E.Kitsway in, the final itself on the track to an estimate, audience of 715 million. Football has grown to crazy levels. As we've said, TV times play a massive part of it. Europe is-- Of football's biggest audiences. The German time scheduling is going to mean that near enough everyone in Europe is able to watch it and watch near enough every game, too, if you want to. No ballers were caught there. It's the first time that Germany hosted it as a united country. Of course, it hosted in 1974, but it was as West Germany at the time. East Germany, of course, played that World Cup famously beating West Germany in it. But not-- They've not won it since 1990, Germany, when they were still known as West Germany as well. The Erden wallers, of course, down now. Germany's been reunified. This is a good chance for Germany to show off to the world. 16 years later, that it is a new country with a new sort of outlook, a new image of itself. Yeah. And this is definitely one of the reasons why people would say Germany took the fair host, but straight away it's mining controversy, dodgy stuff. Dodgy stuff. We talked about Blatter last time. This is Heiterblatt. He's back. He's back again. But he's not just Blatter this time. And he's all the crows at the top of the fair. Chuck Blazer is the involved. Probably he was one of the good guys. He was a friend of the show, former friend of the show, Chuck Blazer. He wasn't one of the good guys, was he? He was originally one of the good guys. He was a whistleblower, and then it turned out he was whistleblower. I'm saying he's in it himself. Our message Chuck Blazer on Facebook once-- he was a FIFA Congress member who lived in New York. And it was so large he had to drive around in the Mid-Bility Scooter and had a power on his shoulder. He was a proper eccentric. And he replied when we were in university. Yeah. And Chuck Blazer. And I said, well, I'm chucked for all to do whistleblowing. And he was like, thanks man, I'm just doing it for the good of the game. Just after his death, I possibly just before his death, it came now that he was steeped in controversy too. As was most of the FIFA Congress at this time. As were most of the bits at this time. Because of course you can't have corruption. He's got to go both ways. He's got to be people willing to corrupt. Rumors have it, "Dish Beagle the German magazine" or newspaper. They're very famous German newspaper. And covers in the published this big article in 2015 that accused Adidas and German politicians and the German FA and the German cabinet of being involved in multiple payments to particularly Asian countries, to buy their votes. There was 23 votes but for grabs, you needed, obviously, at least 12 of them, half of them, to win the World Cup. It came down to a final of South Africa and Germany. Obviously, South Africa then get it in 2010 anyway. Closed, it's around the night. England, we're also in the morning. Morocco, we've so many times, we're also in the morning. Boys, they're late, they miss out. But it goes to Germany. And so you could go, "Yeah, fair enough, Germany, of course, Germany, I was the World Cup, make sense." Obviously. But there was always, there's always room as a payment. This one seems to be more than, "Alvis is denied, course is denied." There is a like a missing 7 million somewhere that's every million. Yeah. And there was, there was polls, polls in various accounts to various people. And yeah, I don't think anything's ever been proven but it's almost certain that there was possibly a little backhand. If everyone's out at the time, does it make a difference? I probably every, we're all doing it. That's fine. It's doing it. Classic. Right. Let's go on to qualification. 197 nations entering this World Cup. Yeah. It's the first one since 82 to have all six confederations represented, not in it as well. Top score in qualification was Metzko, Jarrah, Pogetting, we met Jim and the last pop-assera's header against Italy. Jimmy, of course, qualifier's host. But there is no orthodox spot for the defending champions Brazil. Yeah. Like we said last time, France would be the last to be there as a defending champion. Brazil are participating in this World Cup. They are there. But they are there through qualification. It probably makes sense. It's a wise move. These teams tend to be good teams. You'd think surely they're going to be there. And at least then they've played competitive football, although lots of European qualified, it's not always the most competitive football. Definitely, this is. No. But even so, it makes sense to not reserve a place. Possibly, I mean, possibly what they should do, they don't think it is there, but what you could do is reserve a, like a backup place if they don't get there through qualification, I don't know. What's our point now, is that? I mean, I do have to do that. I do have to do that. Right. I saw they use you this time. So we've got Iran qualifying Japan again. So they're builds on the success of the World Cup, in 2002, tells Korea as well, and Saudi Arabia as well. So kind of the usual suspects for Asia. What about for Africa, who's qualified then? Lots of debuts. Yeah, a lot of debuts. So, which we've got the shirts behind us. We have very exciting. So for the five African teams, we've got Angola, debutants, Ghana, debutants, ivory coast, debutants, Togo, the debutants, and Tunisia are there. They're going. So really knows where you haven't got no Cameroon, no San Miguel, who are so good in 2002. Nigeria. No Nigeria. So maybe like three that you really expect to be there, aren't there, but number Rocco as well. But it's great to see, again, African football is building, is growing so much this time, and those sides Ghana and I be coasting particular will become woke up regulars from this point. We're sending the most notable moments in recent woke up history, which will all cause help lead up into the 2010 woke up, which you'll be hosted in South Africa, of course. Coca-calfs. So North America, again, usual suspects. USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, but another debutant.
Trinidad and Tobago. To write York Trinidad and Tobago. I can't win Jones. Can't win Jones, can't see that. Really, I can't team this Trinidad and Tobago in mind. I think a lot of people love the Reggae boys, 998 Jamaica. That was before. Our time has said so, for me, this is obviously the equivalent that way. I love that Trinidad and Tobago. So I did, it was just cool for a cool player and it's some peg in the Premier League. Or League One. Oh, League. Championship, yeah, championship. So North America, sorry, South America, let me have Argentina and Brazil. Always there. Ecuador. So there you get building on to us in a two and Paraguay, who seemed to be quite a usual suspect. Interestingly though, they've only got 14 here because the fifth side, which could have been Uruguay, lose in an empty content or playoff to do. Australia, they're finally back. 1974, I believe, was their first World Cup. They've been a long hiatus from qualifying. They've lost multiple playoff in heartbreak in ways. Iran, that one of those 128,000 fans in Tehran, Uruguay and last World Cup, but they're here now. And they beat Uruguay at all time, or not penalties. So if they're played to them, big moment for them. Great moment. UEFA, only, so 14 nations in UEFA this time, we have usual suspects. Again, Netherlands, Portugal, England, Italy, France, Croatia, winning groups, Syribe Montenegro are there. The only time I'll ever see Syribe Montenegro out of World Cup used to be called Yugoslavia and the former Republic Yugoslavia. Now Syribe Montenegro before a split again. It's a Syribe Montenegro. So quite a noticeable there. And Ukraine as well, too, as Debutans. Yeah, now low-fidempsion to this World Cup, which is obviously great for the tournament. Sweden also goes through automatically, as well as Poland. And then the LAT teams have to get through the playoffs, Spain qualify through the playoffs as well. And Switzerland too, and Czech Republic. Because the Switzerland gaming, it's Turkey's noticeable. It was a really feisty, nasty clash, as you can watch clips around YouTube, which when the two sides brewed in like each other. This is when there was two legs, wasn't it, for the playoffs as well? Yeah, and the second leg played, I think, in, maybe in Turkey. But the, it's his feisty heated, and they ended it all out brawl at full time. Turkey don't do themselves much justice in, you know, getting people on their side. In the last time, obviously devastated to not be there. Again. And for the Czechs, they, the first time there is Czech Republic, not the Czechs of Aki, as well, so there's another. Different. France, a good point. Yeah, nice. So yeah, there we go. World Cup qualifies. Wales watching. How did Wales get on? Robes. At all. The new Robes. This is really bad, actually. Lawn in a quite a British group here, isn't it? Yeah, we only, we only win two games out of ten. We've been all night, do we? Three, two, decent. Half-half. I was there, remember it. I was there, as well. Yeah. We drew with us by Jan away, and we drew many non-longs at home. But then we could lose. Greatest driven house. Lost to England, two and a way, one to go home. I used to pole and used to wash, yeah. Not great. Come fifth out of sixth in the group. Not building on the, yeah, almost qualifying for your trousers and four. It was the, yeah, not good. Pretty pants, right. I think I've read to be straight forward qualification. Yeah, it is. In these, there's a lot of new faces, lot of old faces. Let's go ahead. Quite a nice mix of the old and the new. Okay, that's the trigger hosts. Yes. Okay, Germany, of course. So attendance is really high. Three point four million, 52 and a half thousand per match, which is a big jump up from 2012 to that bridge. It's kind of getting nearer the America war cup, I think it's still below, isn't it? But it's, yeah, America is the biggest at all time, but unsurprisingly, Germany has good attendance because they've got a stadium ready for it. And a European people willing to travel to Germany because it's not far. It is easy to get to in all that business. 64 matches played only 147 goals, so relatively low average of 2.3 per match, which I think has only been worsened by Italian 90. So this is pretty, I'm, and 2010, I think this is pretty low. So walk up which is a strong positive memories in my mind, but when you look at average goals, it's pretty disappointing. Yeah, yeah, it is. And as I did the research for this one, it is, that's a little bit of a conclusion that people at the time were making. So we've got to be careful not to stray too much in the Southern nostalgia. Wow. Okay, right 12 host cities down from 20 last down from 20. So very noticeable stadiums across the probably there was nobody's the Berlin Olympus stadium. This is going to be one of history's most iconic stadiums, not just for football. Of course, it hosts this final and so on. Host the Spain beat in England final in the year of 2024 as well. And this is about Jesse Owens of course wins his gold medals in 1936 Olympics. So you mentioned that on our previous 1938, 1934 podcasts. One of the most iconic moments in all sports history there. Jesse Owens in the four gold medals in front of Adolf Hitler, of course. But it's also a statement later that we see in this walk up and it just has a huge moment in it. Yeah, the one in Munich is not used this time out. The host at 74, the Olympus stadium Munich's not used, but they were in Berlin is iconic. And then this other iconic names you will absolutely recognize things like the Allies are re now all the rules and all that. And you wasn't it for this. Yeah, the the World Cup stadium Munich Dortmund stadium again, unbranded as they will have to be for the World Cup. Hamburg stadium, calcium, curkish alka. Frankfurt there. They are really good stadiums, you know, it's green. American style, cologne, hangover. So lots of just really, really iconic ones to a guard. So obviously, you know, Jeremy have great infrastructure and they're ready to host a tournament. And they do it a good place to host a tournament all in all. Yeah. The mascot, disappointing. Galeo and Pele. He's a lion, isn't it? And he's got like a little. Talked all up for like a puppet ball. Yeah, it's really, really weird. It's just a straight fold cute lion. He's quite merchantizable for kids, but it's nothing special. Dress you could dress up as in pretty comfortable. Yeah. Why is it a lion for Jeremy? It's a lion representative, Jeremy. I don't know. I'm sure let's down the comments. Yeah, you were in there just a cute lion boring really. Yeah, I agree. The football though is another iconic ball. The Deedas team guyced and everyone on these ones they keep us worried about for the tournament. It's moving in the air. I can't control it. It was one of the first balls remember when they were like it's only made up of 16 panels. Not 50 like usual. It was like, wow, it's different. It's all glued together, not stitch. You know, so I can read new technology for footballs. But we'll see how that gets on in a little while as well. Not a very noticeable look at the songs this one. No, I don't think so. I don't know if there was a couple of possibly rebuffs of old songs, but nothing iconic. No Vindaloo. No, no, and no, you know, Wacker Wacker that will seem to really tell me that. Well, don't this boy list. That's the only good thing about that next World Cup. It's a song. Right. Shall we go on to the football then already? Yeah. Quick for this World Cup. It was amazing. It was a straightforward admin process in 2006. Yeah. You know, an efficiency. Jim in efficiency. There is is getting through to the podcast too. Right. Group A is Germany's group. This is the first group opening game, sorry, the World Cup, where the hosts play it for quite a long time. Yeah. It's usually defending champions that play the opening game. But now it's the hosts. And it is. It breaks the mold of dull, boring, one-neil, and nil, nil opening games. This is a Dolphest. It's the highest score in opening match in World Cup history. Four two. Germany versus Costa Rica. I'm a watchiness as a kid. It's a true after school. Six minutes in, Philip Laramist, kind of kind of unheard of. He's playing a left back, isn't he, in this World Cup? Cutting. Cutting from the left. On his right foot. Ed corner of the box on the angle. Chills in his wonderful shot into a far top right hand corner. What a goal to open the World Cup. Pandemonium in a stance. It's all going off. I'm a go-shows to parks after this game and trying to recreate this goal. And the Frings go at the end as well. Yeah, the Frings goes to the iconic one, too. So they win four, too. Say closer gets two in between. Pushed his tally. And we'll notice that. He loves World Cup goals. And then Frings, we just chat to your brother about it. He was at the Frings goal. I remember the Frings goal. Good name. Frings, Torsten Frings. Yeah, quite memorable name. And he scores a cracker too. So, yeah, this is exactly what we see from World Cup as a thing. Balls roll to him. Yeah. About three, five yards out. And he just led us it and it had spins away, doesn't it? It's a bit like the Ari Han goal in 74, so 78, sorry. Yeah. For Netherlands top corner. It's an incredibly opening game. You think in here we go. This World Cup is going to be a big hit. Yeah. So, yeah. So, yeah.
pretty decent here. Ghibli then, ease through the group really, winning all three games. And full of luck I've started. Ghibli or Ghibli sort of reputation or what the fans thought about them wasn't very good. They've been pretty useless year, 2004, crashing out on the group stage. I think, drawing the Latvia, I think, losing Czech Republic, losing to Netherlands as well when they know that age-old rivalry. They, and got to the final to us in two, just might be in a very dull, boring, pretty average side, somehow got to the final. So they're not expected to do very well. The junior game sense is, er, not sure about the East-Yugan Kinsman's managers, and of course, but they are completely ripping up the form, and easing through. Yeah, one million is Poland, three million against Ecuador, nine points out of nine, lovely for them. That's exactly what you want from the host nation. Ecuador, top Poland though, which is quite interesting, to second place. The key game there, they both lose to Germany, obviously, and then they play each other really having both beaten Costa Rica. The key game, they beat Poland to Nell. And so they used through in second place, which is great to see Ecuador escape their group. To be then is England's group. They had Sweden Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago. That's a pretty nice group to get. Sweden seems to be with a rivalry with England this time. They can seem to draw them all the time. England though, they just about win the first game as Paraguay for David Beckham, free kickers and it had to flex in. Still spent again, actually. It is still spent again. Yeah, well, yeah, even with those warm balls going to look for then England play Trinidad Tobago and it's not really going to play, is it? England respected better than similar to what's the Algerian X hookup and then he's like, is it the Q8 game in 82 winged and expected to smash him with the only just being one Nell. Here again, it's almost going to finish as a Nell Nell draw. It's just Nell Nell about to be a crack scores. That's great leak doesn't it? Yeah. Not in robot. Does that yeah, robot of course and then Gerard scores as well. That's a good goal. Yeah. So if England thankfully 2-0 win for them, the one Nell is Paraguay thinks from the goal, 2-0 against Trinidad and they give us not brilliant though, is it? For what at this time will come on to it? We talk about squads, talk about England's goal in generation, possibly with the greatest sides of all time for England. A lot of people say this is England's chance. Here's a correct, you know, go ahead and win this and then they in their final game draw 2-2 with Sweden. That's a good match. Yeah, good game. But they top the group. They've not possibly, you know, blown people away yet, but they've done the job. They're through with their top of the group. And that game gets Sweden, of course, features the Joe Cole volley from about 30 yards, chests it, mash it and the volley. S.A. Great goal, isn't it? This has got some good goals. Let's walk up. Yeah, it has. Really good. Right. So England through top of the group. Sweden second for them as well and surprisingly probably there. Okay, group C is a bit of a group of death again. Argentina Netherlands, Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro. And I think when you first talk about this game, of course, we will go into messy later because he makes his debut or will cup debut in this tournament. He scores, isn't he in the in the Serbian Montenegro game? Argin a batter, them six now, but it's most famous for a goal scored by Esteban, Can be asked to and which Argentina goal is incredible. Passing move. 25 passes in total. A lovely little back heel, isn't it? Lazy off. Can be asked to hit into the roof of the net. It's a stunning goal. It's like football at its best, football at its best. Every player touches the ball. All that sort of bits and pieces of it is great. It's so good. And Argentina look really sort of mean in that first couple of games there. They beat Ivory Coast 2-1 and then they beat San, Serbia Montenegro. Unsurprisingly, probably six now, as you say, a young Lionel Messi makes his world cup first. Impact, he scores in that game too. So he's notched one there onto the tally that's still ready and will still be running to a two three six. The only problem is Argentina and Netherlands both win the opening games. Six points each. Yeah. Means the final group game is a little dead rubber. And Nile Nile doesn't know too. So that big game promising so much. Repeated the 98. Birkhand game. Yeah. It's not great. It's a bit dull. Right. So we go onto group D where we see the first one cup of Cristiano Ronaldo. Of course, Portugal drawing its Mexico and go low, which is very noticeable. Because Angola used to be a colony of Portugal, of course, and Iran. Where it is straight forward Portugal. Yeah, they beat in goal one Nile. They beat Iran, two Nile Nile which Ronaldo. Of course, his first World Cup goal penalty penalty. It was a lot of those things. Yeah. And then they'd be Mexico to one. Mexico joined them though. They win three. You want to get surround and they draw Nile Nile and Angola and then they cause they lose to Portugal. The dead rubber there. Is there anything to hang home? No, it's a one-one draw between Iran and Angola. Nothing special. I mean, to be fair, so Angola, two points in our first World Cup. They're on the World Cup. They must have been pretty, you know, chuffed with that. Yeah. And likewise actually in the last group, I've recooked. They do win their last game against Serbia and Montenegro. They were two and they'll come back to win three, too. So, you know, there's a couple of things to hang your hat on if you were a fan of these nations. Much like where Wales went to their first World Cup. Yes. Ages and to do the rubbish job. Now, that World Cup, when Wales qualified in the last one, they had drawing as England, USA and Iran, all four teams were in the World Cup top 20 at the time. Now, this actually a PA group E, Italy, Ghana, Czech Republic and the USA, is even even better group at E, because Italy, Czech Republic and USA are all in the World top five. Go into this World Cup. You don't think about these teams where we now be that high to you, you never qualify anymore. Czech Republic are qualified this time for the first time since 2006. They were crazy good, though, in 2006. This is the Czech Republic of Barras and Colour and Razicki and Ned Vets. What a great team. They've done so well in the year as a thousand four, really unlucky up to win the whole thing. And Ghana are also drawing in it and Ghana are, most of you I think they're going to be straight out. But that's not how it works. They incredibly come second in the group only by Italy. Yeah. And Italy, of course, we're not yet spoken about it, are here on the back of one of footballs and Italian footballs, most influential, controversial scandals yet again. Another one, we've talked about a number of ones. It's not another one. They love to match fix in Italy. We know that and they did it a little bit of that again. A little bit, a lot of it. To the point of, you know, the biggest clubs in Italy are caught up in this eventous, they seem like I don't believe, aren't they? To that, the league, big players leaving. That is uncovered just before the World Cup, really, isn't it? Yeah, it's a cow's shop belief scandal, isn't it? Match fixing on it and precedent, industrial scale, really. Referees, they get their titles, they don't really know anything. Yeah, yeah, this whole controversy is around, you know, who owns those? Two titles, three titles, you've been to us, couple there, other clubs are caught up in it, but the most notable ones, of course, are AC Milan and you've been to us, you've been to Hammond for this. And they're a couple of players state, people like Del Piero and Sparaday and Bufon, others like Slatango, Proud, and not from me, off I'm go, he talks about that, and he's sort of biographies, so Hammond got to stay there when that's happening, I'm not playing Serie B. Really, really controversial moment, and it's due to a year of payment of referees and wire tapped phones where they talk about influencing results right on ballroom level, really significant. I mean, it is a proper scandal, a scandal. Yes, that's a looming over, Mrs. Torrent McGinn, so a lot of these players, you know, unsure of what their future is, it's like, what's going on, what's going on, what's going to happen after this World Cup, and it's lovely, cumin bubble right now, but it's about to pop. They ease through though, they do ease through it. Yeah, they so they come and they look good, they be Ghana 2-0, they be Czech Republic 2-0, the only little hiccup really is a one-month rule with the USA, where they can see they're only going this one months or so far, yeah, it's an ungold, but really they they're walked through, it's quite interesting though, because Ghana, Czech Republic, USA, who's going to join them, it's Ghana actually, who do the checks, they beat USA 3-0. I watched a resistive, she was a cracker, yeah, yeah, we're watching the girls for this tournament, and that's, I love that check, because I love them in 2004, I wanted them to win a head of Greece, obviously memorable one, but they sort of built a goal, yeah, it's brilliant. And then, so they beat USA 3-0, they lose to Ghana real blow, and then obviously they lose to Italy, puts them out, Ghana, great story, they lose to Italy's kickoff, but then they'll win against Czech Republic, they beat the USA, and they head through in his names like, Asama was yam, dancing, is it, yeah, I'm sorry, yeah, Steven, a P, A, P, you know, this play is there that again, etched into our memory, not just for the World Cup, because lots of these things come to the Premier League in the coming years. Okay, let's go on screw back.
Brazil, Australia, Croatia and Japan, Japan. Not doing the incredible heroics they did in 2002, that out, bottom of the group, Croatia also poor just two points, which means Brazil, understandably, I'm going through, Cup to B, three with out three. But Australia, in their first World Cup since '74, have also got through to the knockouts. Tim K. Hill firing in some goals. Yeah, they were playing Japan and they win it. They needed to win to guarantee their place through and they win it late. K.L. double 84, 89 minutes. And then Ali Ossi scores in the early second mid. They were up in that three one and they come second in their group, which is a huge achievement for Australia. Like I said, it's the first one since, with 32 years. And the fact that they are able to push through and B. Like I said, Japan, we had the great tournament in 2002, Croatia, they had a great tournament in '98 and they're proced to a little bit more aging now. This is in between Croatian generation, but I guess this is a bit even so good result. Yeah, so Brazil though, they got a fantastic squad on paper in this World Cup. Well, maybe go on to a little bit more detail. Yeah, yeah, yeah, go on to the quarterfinals. The most notable thing in this group though is referee in decision. It's great in Paul. Yeah. It is, if I say to you, great in Paul, what do you think straight away? Three out of cards. Three out of cards. So the, three in a card, you can't have three in a card. You can. So in the last group game between Australia and Croatia, which is a bit of a rivalry, it's quite a lot of diaspora of Croatia in Australia. And it's quite a heated game. One of the most, the fiercest players for Croatia is just a simulnich who gets the yellow card and gets another one. And you can't send it off. And then to think again, hang on, he's got way with it. And the commentators are going, he's missed that. He was missed it. This is obviously pre-var. The embarrass of the English ref. Because you was like, "Come on, I hope the English ref do well." And he's humiliated. Yeah. And then right in the game, he gives him a no-yellow card and he goes, "Oh, yeah, red card off is pretty cringey to watch, isn't it?" Oh, it's not. Now it's at World stage, your chance to referee. It's a really heated game. It's quite bisty. Lots of guys, I think three, two or something. He's obviously just lost in the emotion it is, isn't he? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right. A lafay grey. Right. That's one of those groups. G, Switzerland, incredibly top in this group ahead of France and fourth place in 2002 South Korea. And then go. And Togo. Yeah. So the surprise group times, they get a great draw at Neil Nile with France. Then they win two, they get against Togo, two against South Korea, top the group. For France, following a poor World Cup in 2002, it's not great. Obviously, they make them through the groups of time, but it's not ideal for them to have come second place. Yeah, they're a little bit embarrassing for them really. A bit of a stature in start for France. I'll see how that goes on for the rest of the tournament though. I see if they can pick it up any at all. Yeah. And fortunately with Togo straight out, but they do get a goal before they go out with zero points group 8. And the final group Spain, you cringe in this year. How do you Arabia? A bit of an inspiring group looking at that on a paper, but Spain again, like quite a few of these teams win all three of their group games. So Brazil and all three of their games, Portugal and all three of their games, June and all three of theirs and Spain done the same. This is the Spain. We've been talking about Spain from 82 onwards. 82 was pretty poor, wasn't it? Yeah. And they got progressively better and better into the squad. Now, this one we're thinking of Torres, David Vierde, the two forwards that are firing in the goals that are opening game in the batter Ukraine 4-0. The VSCORS twice, Torres scores that lovely kind of volley, doesn't he? Into the bottom left hand corner. Does that set a bridge? You make these sliders like we're doing. You've seen bulk kind of thing in the arms. It's, you got Javi in the yesterday in this team as well. Yeah. And they're still there. They're still not going to be able to build in for their dominance over the next six years after this. Yeah, we'll come on to Spain the next time. I'm talking about that. But you can recover, don't they? Yeah, Ukraine do. You create a sketch so they get battered 4-0. But then they do make it out of the group in second place. I had a Tunisia and Saudi Arabia because they beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 themselves. They were then 1-0 as Tunisia. And they are through. And so, you know, there is some sort of bounce back from them, but really is a little bit of a good Spain women that group. Okay. The group stage, Nisfalka, was revered as it had the loads of goals. Everyone's like, wow, the goals are back. It's going to be amazing. This can't possibly dry up, but as we see, they are going to dry up a little bit as they go into the knockout rounds. Let's think of some players first now. This is only hard because I think about tonight, our 90-30 podcast. The players bit tick about 30 seconds of the show. This is going to take a while. So what I've seen that you've done is you've cut it down. You've tried to cut it down to just a few players in each country. We've probably mentioned if you're ready to be fair. Yeah. Right. Should we get started? Is it the best players? Group play. Costa Rica. I've only given you a power one shop. Still there. Good name. Yeah. Still there. Ecuador. You know, these other groups played for villain. Yeah. I'm very, very fine. And Tony of Valencia, of course, we all remember him, but he was not big then he was playing for record. He was at the age of 20. Good. Germany recognized one in Italy. Lehman, who's shranked like a friend closer. Balak. Can't still there. Hitzelsberger. Lamb Metasacker. Oh, Lucas Pedalski. He was good. Really. That left for. He is the young player of torment, isn't he as well? Notice about Balak. I didn't mention it on the last podcast, but he is suspended for the final. It was in two despite scoring the goal to get him there. He has that year. He has the worst year. Yes. Any player of football history. He loses the World Cup final. Yes. And he doesn't get to play it. Yeah. He loses the Champions League final. He loses the Bundesliga last day of the season. And he loses the German Cup final as well. Yeah. For, yeah, for Lavecourses. And so all in all, a terrible few months for Michael Balak. Pretty good career still though. Decent. But I don't think you have to want to Champions League. Yeah. Yeah. Or the World Cup. So it could have been a career. What could have been? I mean, that would have been a ball on door winning season. Yeah. Yeah. And Poland's, I mean, you got a few players here. Yeah. Boric. Yeah. Fushak. Ziravski from Celtic as well. Right. England. Now we've able. This is their gold in generation. We've got to see on Twitter or Facebook or whatever. It has the clip of the England team being panned across during the aunt terms. It's like, how did this team never win the World Cup? I mean, we'll see why. Let me see some of the other squads in this tournament. Because this is their golden generation. But there's a lot of golden generations in this tournament. It's probably what this World Cup is known for. It really isn't it? Is the player power? Is the ultimate superstar World Cup? Yeah. I, I, I, I, I, I, I tried to total up gold generations. I went through. There is quite a few of them. But yeah, the names of the England squads. So, you know, Robinson, Neville, Ashley Cole, Gerard, Ferdinand's there, Terry's there, Beckham, still there is Captain, Lambert, really, Owen, Joe Cole, Campbell, still there, James, Bridge, Carrega, Hargreed, Genus, Carrick, Lenin, Downing, Crouch, Carson, and of course, the same Ireland. Hunter, Virge, or to the Theo Walcott added for real no reason at all by Sven. Is he just playing Minity? No, no, no. What I would say about this squad, Owen, does Krush does need? He, he, he, he, he, limps out of the Sweden game, doesn't he? What I would say about this team is that although it is got a fantastic 11, and a couple of subs, like maybe Hargreed. Yeah, the deck. I don't think it's, I don't think the squad is, yeah, in, I think they're, I think they're more recent squads are better than this. Starting 11, isn't it? That you look at, I'd you say that. It's 11. And when you see one of the videos they show, how does this team know in the World Cup? It's got Gerard, then has Lambert, then has Hargreed and has Kariff and like, well, we've been playing four set of mids for a start and might have fit him in a four four two. That's probably not the best thing to do that Sven. And being there, that is a great team. Paraguay, Rocky Santa Cruz. Yeah. But Sweden, Melbourne, Lundberg, Zlatan, Larsen, Kim Kalschrom, Isaacson, the goalkeeper as well. You've got a lot of Trinidad and Tobago players just to do. There's great names in the Trinidad and Tobago team. So Shaka, his club was 37, he's the West Ham, it was Grunas time. Everyone remember Shaka, let's talk. Sting, Johan, Johan, yeah. Coventry, Sting, Johan at the time. Ken Wing, Johan, he played for Old Hoagster, including Kariffy, St Jason, Scotland. Dwight York is there 34 years old. Dennis Lawrence, who's a rex and with the right. So, yeah. Kariff said, "Well, remember, look, he's still playing, he's 47, he's still playing." He was quite good on the, quite quick. Yeah. It was their golden generation. It was a team as well. So, there you go. Argentina, I don't, it's a decent team. It's not as strong as Simulator Squad or the one before this. Ayala, I mean, color Chinese in there. He's okay. Ain't say can be Afso, Saviole, Ashirano, Crespo, Brickelmain, we want to play. He was Tevez, Milito, Ima, Maxiadriguez, and of course, greatest of all to you.
- Time, Lila Messi. - 18 years old, 18. - The first kid. - First one, and he was all certainly gonna be there, in 236 as well, which is crazy time wise. That is mad, is it? - Yeah, it's there. I've recouched, did he has a core, I wrote a cone A, did he have drock was there, yeah, he had a tall rate, but winnings at a Limpiark, I've gots before, what comes, and a manual of Bue as well. - No cone o' torics, - Engine, no single, no single. - Netherlands, Van der Sarr, from Broncos, Duke Kout, Kaku, Vanisteroi, Vanissar, Robin, and Percy, my Barmol Schneider. Good team out. - Good team, - They look at it in the gold generation one though, in terms of your 74s or whatever. - Yeah, he's not quite a cloy for knee skins in the boys, don't. - Yeah. So, Modsino, a couple of recognizable names, VDH Keserman, who obviously was a flop at Chelsea, Stankovic and Zig-Hitch as well. - Baving him legends. This is VDH pre-United, isn't it, as well? - Iran, Ali Dayi, who was, that wasn't in that play for years, you had the most in South-Hart Golds, isn't it? - Yeah. - He's always in like, how quiz-questional stats of them, he's looking at your old magazine, oh, he's got the most in South-Hart Golds. I think, sorry, Mexico, Raffa, Marquez, Bugetti, a shower, he's there. - First World Cup. - His first World Cup, oh, - Willem. - The Ultimate World Cup legends. - Yeah, Mo, a shower. - I was calling him Willem. - He was in there, let me know the spelling of it. He's a proper World Cup legend. I hope he's there in 2026. - So just put him in. Just put him in as one. And Portugal, another golden generation tick for me. - Yeah, you're reckon? I mean, obviously they won the 2016 Euro, didn't they? - If I wasn't that best in Euro, that was a little better. - I don't want to. - I don't want to. - They have to be team now, yeah. So people like Ricardo and Palfa Rare, Costina, Figo, Paleta, Hugo Viana, Schumann, Duna Verlente, Paul Morta, Ricardo Cavalio, Ron Aldo, First World Cup, 21. Maniche Tiago, Deco, Helga, Osteiga. - Yeah, and this is of course Portugal who lost the final of the Euro's two-three on him. So, Porto won the Champions League in 2004 with a very heavy lot of these players playing for that, Porto side. Porto is football is boomer. So yeah, I think Golden Generation Tiago is probably a fair one's put there. - Yeah. - Deco, what a play he was. - Ciao, public. - I, - Let's hold it for them. - I'm gonna say, it's not, but I think it is the Golden Generation where there's two years after the Golden Generation. - So they're all, - Yes, they've all just got, so check, yeah, tick. Paparski is gone past it. Colors gone past it. Brasiski, sure. Ned Fence gone past it. - Yeah, yeah, fine. - Baras, as he is peek at your trousers for, 'cause he wasn't dendraining in the back of that really. Well, one Champions League, but didn't score many goals. And he got Anthony Kintzki. - Yeah, I was like, Anthony Kintzki. - He's not out all the things. - How many Kintzki's in this set? - Is he started? Anthony Kintzki, they were nothing about the terrible game against a lettiga Madrid for Spurs. This is down actually. But yeah, fine. Okay, an age in Golden Generation. How on to Golden Generation Lafayl? Are these still in the Golden Generation? - Yeah, it's a window though. - Yeah, okay. - Fine. - Ghana, notable names, Asma Jan, Michael S, and oh, he was so good, wasn't he? Steffan Appia, Montari, John Pantson as well. - Yeah. - Not bad, Italy. - Yeah, I questioned this a bit of a modern Golden Generation. - You think that. - Honestly, one of the reasons England's hookup, it sees Horde is better. - Yeah. - Is it unbelievable to you? - Yeah. - And they've had good plays. That's like they've had good plays throughout the year. - This is it to you without Mardini as well. - Yeah. - Buffon, Grosso, Derossi, Canavaro, Balzagi, Dupierre, Kutuso, Tony, Totti, Gildino, Nesta, Cameron Azi in Zaghi's and Brota, Pierlo Matarazzi, you will come to. - Good side. - Very born parot simium parotter as well, is in this squad. - That's an ink, insane squad. And that's like the whole thing is, that's just a selection of their best players. We're going to them at Bill later on, of course. - USA, good night. - Yeah well they would have been hoping to get through for this group really. So, after the 2002 performance, Tim Howard, Bachanegra, Dempsey Eddie Johnson, C. Calcy. - C. Calcy, yep. - As will Rayna, he's still there. Not gonna about his 94 wasn't as well. Casey Keller, Bromot Bride, Lansing Donovan. Yeah, not a bad team, that. - Yeah. Australia, you could have your girls' girls' jokes for them. Some ways. - What could say, K. Hill, Mark Zoodukas still there. - Are you C. Hill, of course? - Yeah, Adrian, they're some of them though. - Brazil, I mean there's not gonna be like old generation, but it's a very good squad. D. De Kaffo, pretty old now. Lucio Emerson, Roberto Carlos, Adriano. He was so good running Pro EVO 6, Adriano. - I know, you know, he's not a child. - Good song as well, I'll hit that one. - Yeah. - Yeah, unbelievable. - Absolutely, well. - Kaff Kaff. I mean he's gonna go into the Boundore the following year. Ronaldo, and Artenio, Zeraperto, Luis Al. You'll go to Silver, Geninho, with the free kicks, of course. Fred, not the United Fred, the one. Rubinho, who was Harold, is the next LA as well at this point, wasn't he? A great team there, that front, that attacking, attacking wise was on paper, so good, but doesn't work out that way. They're managed by Carlos Alberto Pereiro, famously one that woke up in '94, playing a pragmatic, negative style of football. And they kind of weaves its way into this team as well. You've got players like Ronaldinho, who aren't allowed to fully play the way they want to play. And it doesn't work out for them. Croatia? - Cern is there, of course, played there for a long time for Croatia. Daio, Cernich, Nicol Kovaak, Oleg, she's there, and of course, Yukamodri, it's 20 years old. - He'll be, I think, it's was already. - Yeah, playing for Dino Zagreb, this point's a before, it's been here before, Remedread, but he is there. - Japan, Nikata, Silver, in a moto, and free kick legends, Celtic legends, Sunsuki Nakamura, good players. Group G, France, I mean, you put boom sign balance, I mean, no, you can see. - When we're talking about the best places, Celtics woke up, boom sign. - He likes Jean Allen, boom sign, I don't know. - I don't know, it's good, he's terribly. Jean Allen, boom sign, you know, didn't he? - Is it good, David? Do you prefer with me? So, boom sign, who else? - I'm a Dal Vierre Galas, Macalely Leile, Meluda, Zidane, there's Captain, Viltord, Henry, Henry, Silver, Saffa, Lillian, Turan, Fabian Barters, David Trezike, Frank Ribe, not a good old- - A good old- - As 98, and 22, and they are aging, they're still good, but they're not. - Yeah, you got like Macalely's passive release, and he's a dad, means a dad is all due to your analysis retirement, - Yeah. - For after the walkup of this point, he's. - Exactly, 'cause it. - Yeah, he retired from French football after the 2002 walkup, and then maybe after the year 2004, you do want to play him or, and they're struggling to qualify, and they're getting back in, they're getting back his retirement, he comes back, everyone's kind of writing him off, there's a bit of a has been. As a lot of this squad, they probably think of the time, Macalely, Barters, Trezike, Turan, but it's kind of an old guard that will do amazing things. South Korea, part of each son, you've got down in Switzerland, a couple of Arsenal legends, Juru and Senderos. - Yeah. - Don't know if you've heard of the whole, it was a captain from the line, nothing special. And I thought you were off a tow, go of course, was there the most notable player for you. - Spain, we've noticed that we mentioned a lot of this, it's pretty as ready, they'll build a course into the next few tournaments. Csagardo, Marcina, Poyle, Raoul, Javi, Torres, Reyes, in Yester, Sergio Ramos, Marcos Senna, Csess Fabricas, David Vier. - Oh, good side. - That's good, you haven't even mentioned Jabil Anzo, no, yeah, yeah, very good. I mean, you've got Chimchinnesian players here as well. I like these ones though. - Radi Jedi, - Yeah, Balsa legend, - Mettin Fati, the Birmingham. - Yeah, and for Ukraine finally, and Tonne, Anton Ali, Tumashuk, Andrew Shavchenko of course. He was one of the best plays in the world this time. - Yeah, captain and phenomenal player. And Andrew the Royal, because little legends terribly, he was awful. - Proceeds and you were terrible. - Right, there we go. Okay, let's go on to the knockouts. Now, there's some of the goals dry up in this World Cup. So from the goals flowing in in the group stage, they kind of dry up. And we have a few nail nails, couple of one nails, edgy games, Germany, first of all, dispatchers' reading. So England is happy that they won that group. So they would have to host Germany, otherwise. - Do you ever go through rarely to come to me against reason? - Yeah, brace from Buzalski, fourth minute, twelfth minute game over. - Easy. - Perfect. - Yeah. - Then the next game is on my favorite games. I remember watching when I was a kid, the 13. I actually in the Mexico, it was a good World Cup rivalry again. That happens quite often. It's a proper end to end battle of really nice watch, football to watch. It goes a distance to actually time.
It's hanging a balance and watching as a kid, hoping for penalty. You can't really excited about that as it ends. But we get something even better. The ball is flung across one side of the pitch, switched over. It's stunning. Towards Maxiardry, guys, you take the ball, honest chest. Pop it up to itself, something. Pop it up and left foot, volley. Right, right. Into the top left-hand corner. Oh, it was a little. It's a bit like. How much regas is goal in 2014? Yeah, on an angle. It might be even better. I think it's so good. And then, introduced Maxiardry, of course, to the world as well. Oh, wow, goal. Yeah, Argentina are through. And then he's going to get a song to the tune of Heartbeat. By Liverpool fans. Good song. That's great tune. Italy controversial, you knock out Australia. Viery Dodgy 94. Yeah, how's it going? It's not big. It's not big. Really lay on. Grosso wins it. Italy dives 10 minutes from us again. Mark and Matt are at the same time. I don't like him to be in the. I can't tell you later. But, yeah, a leg penalty controversial. Probably wasn't a penalty. Italy in many people's eyes helped through against Australia. I mean, who knows what happened. They probably wouldn't want to have time anyway, we can't say. But, yeah, there is a bit of the dodgyness around it. Italy are through in finnelltron. OK. Now, this is next game. It's a game regarded by Mart Lawson. He's just played in Cologne. OK, he said, for a game-plading cologne, that stunk. He always had a way with words that he liked. I think he's one of the worst matches of all time. Switzerland, Ukraine, Nell Nell. And three Nell unparities to Ukraine. Switzerland, Miss all their penalties. But they go out of the World Cup. How can seed in a single goal? Staggering. They're the only two World Cup history to go out of that. So, it comes to a single goal. And I think one of the only tight teams to ever miss all their penalties in a penalty shootout as well. And you're creating incredibly, and if David will clap, it makes it the quarterfinals. Bit of a shot. I do remember watching that as well, as a kid. I was just happy it went to penalties, because I was at least that's something entertaining to watch. But it even gave a rubbish as well. England played Ecuador. Again, it's David Beckham free kick. Kind of quite a far out. Kind of goes to the bottom left hand corner. Keep a pop, you should save it, but it goes in. England again, not really, you know, not clicking. No, not really. One Nell actually win over Ecuador and get him into the quarterfinals. Brazil beat Garner, three Nell notable, because Ronaldo becomes the all-time World Cup top scorer for a short spell. Over taking again, but there's 14, there's 15th goal. So he goes through one and one. So that step over doesn't even around the goalkeeper. Knocks another guy over and just taps it in. He's still got it. Unbelievable game there. And then we go on to Spain France. Now, France had been pretty poor in the group stage. Spain had been pretty sensational. You probably expect in Spain to win this. Yeah, definitely. All European tie. But not how it ends up. And this is when we started to see, in Italy and Sudan, beginning is swan song. He is starting to play like the old Sudan. And they win quite come to me three, one. Yeah, two late goals there at one, one. And Vieras causing the eight, three minutes. Sudan in the 90 second minute to dump out Spain. Because of that, that's the Dan's playing classes. Yeah, Zidane was noted for how good he was in that game. Spain are out when they look so good. France threw when they didn't look so good. So, you know, fair point to them. And they progress. Like France always seem to do when they will continue to do apart from 2010. And then going on to your favorite match for white, favorite match of all time. Portugal won Netherlands now. Doesn't sound that good on paper. Rubbish actually. It's terrible. But this game is known as the battle of Nuremberg. We waited quite a long time on this podcast series for another battle. We've had the battle of Bern, Fidaz War, Battle of Bordeaux, 38, Battle of Santiago, 62. And we finally got another battle. The battle of Nuremberg. The most significant justice doubt in Nuremberg in World history, maybe. Yeah, probably. So, it's a fantastic, and entertaining game, even if it's not for the football, because this has a world record of 16 yellow cards and four red cards as well. I remember just watching this. So my parents, you saw the main TV in the front room, and then we had my parents had like a very small TV with a dodgy area at the turn, up in their bedroom. And they said, it was really small. They said, "Oh, for this game, you can take RTB, put in your room, you can watch it, because we're watching, I don't know, Korea, something." So brilliant. So I was watching it on this kind of grey fudge, and I was just, when we were just being in, I was so entertained by the yellow card, just keeping coming out. Yeah, yellow after the yellow. Fight, attack. Fight. Terrible, tackle, tackle. Scuffle after scuffle. It got to a point where it was just a total fast. But it was just so good to watch. And as long as the game's the commentator say, "We don't want to see this in the World Cup, but we do." Yeah. Not all the time. No straight red cards. 16 yellows leading to four reds. Amazing, absolutely amazing. And it finishes with that real image of the end of the play, sort of. Oh, the laugh. Yeah, shut that. Sat going like, "What is happening?" It's Deco and Van Broncos, isn't it? Both by our Salona team mates, they're just like, "I'm gonna chat about the end of the game." This is a good nothing inside. There's Van Basten who is managing them, of course. And Scalaria, Portugal, who's won the last World Cup with Brazil. Yeah, both sides aren't laying down at all. There is just so much pushing and shoving. It is just, yeah, honestly, if you haven't seen it, you need to watch it on YouTube and watch those clips back. But the referee comes in for a lot of flak, doesn't he? Valenting even obvious the referee. The Russian referee, and he gets absolutely hammered for the whole thing. He does, he does, I'm sat Blaster, I think, in particular, it says he's not done a good job, which is no. It's a bit harsh, because I think a lot of the other cards are probably the other cards. Yeah, you lose control of the game, and you see it happening in big games. And once you've sort of dished out a yellow card for one thing, he is just very consistent. He continues to dish out the yellow card. For if there's, he doesn't sort of calm the affair. I think the first yellow card is that he has the two minutes, the bubble, but it's a yellow card. And he does, yeah, he sets the tone then. And everything else then he continues it. Seven minutes is another yellow card. Twenty minutes is another yellow card, and he just keeps calling. And to be honest, Louis Figo headbutt's on the bomb, so he should have been sent up, he only gets a yellow card. Boonroo says yellow card, the first one, it almost breaks Chris Aras's leg, because he has to come off Ronaldo early in the half. So England, I watch this game rubbing their hands, and go, "Deco's out with the quarter final." Custini is out the quarter final, and possibly, would Chris Aras and Adam is too, because he's come off injured. Boonroo, that's what happened. That's what happened. Right, so he go on to the quarter finals. Yes. Again, we said before, the goals were dry, but the action, I can't let moments happen. Jimmy Argentina is a one-all game, a late Mirosav Closer goal to equalise for Germany. It goes to penalties, and this is where Jens Lehman writes his name in German history, saves from Kambiazo and Ayala. And yes, I'm pretty sure he's not checking notes. I don't know if they're even real notes, but they are. One of the first times that I've ever seen that, to get into their head in the opposition. Yeah, I don't even know if, and he's called Mad Jens. Do you know the story that he got done for? Well, he did the way on the pitch. That was one thing that was made. But he also recently, or Fed, you know, the last time he's got done the fair, he was annoyed. His name was a bit like a cosy, both digging the garden, like a pogoda. Yeah. And so he took a chainsaw to it and chopped it down. That's true. Yeah. He was crazy. Yeah, he was a, he was a bit of an hour. But he, he's really important as much. I think it's really interesting to start about this. The fact that it goes to penalties, broke through these sides, are unbeaten in penalty shootouts in World Cup history. Before, yeah, both of them were three low in penalty shootouts. Some of them being really significant penalty shootouts. And the streak is broken, obviously, for us, in Tingen, they lose it. Germany and that iconic thing about Germany, they always win penalty shootouts. They do. They now four know in penalty shootouts, and they win this one. And then at full time, once the shootouts over, it descends into an all out brawl again. Both the sides, both benches, pylon, all like the dignitaries are all not on there. Full on fights, I think, you know, literal punches are being thrown. It's a really bad temper to the game. On this walk up, four, it's, you know, big moments. As a bit of a reputation has been a bit of a violent, a bit of an aggressive tournament. I think as a record for most red cards in a World Cup, yeah, quite comfortably as well. Yeah. But this game here is really feisty. I'm actually not unhappy about the way Germany celebrates their win in the early in Pistadien, but there we go. Germany is through. Italy then comfortably see off your cranes, three nails, I'm Brotto and look at Tony with a couple of goals. And then we got two other notebook games. England's Nell Nell reports. Goals will repeat the year, 2014 final. And England lose on pens again. Again, the who do again again?
Lamppard, Gerard and Cari get all miss. No, it's amazing. I can't use the only one school. As he says, he repeated the court files in New Zealand for at least most notable because Wayne Rooney is dismissed for a stamp. Yeah. And it's always funny watching this and thinking about a time. Everyone was like in uproar about how in the injustice of him being sent off. But it's the most obvious red card ever. It's a real red card. He literally stamped the stamp. He made it just in my body. Contact. I remember people being like us and I've got very good contacts. Yeah, it's on the gentleman region. And then there's really famous for Ronaldo Winkin. His teammate, isn't it? Yeah, because he runs to refters and he really gives a little push. Yeah. And ref stands off Rooney. Yeah. And he walks off Winkin. Yeah. And that called up for a word English. Yeah, a teammate, right? Yes, it made my team mates how he's so out of the solace. He did solve it. I was so out of control this Ronaldo's a scumbag Ronaldo's this. I mean, no one I just buy it like a show. I'll do it. I'm still lucky. I did not have who need them to be fair. But he's doing it. Yeah. And just interesting. Get here for sculari. And they he now has three straight wins over Svanie's got been who do himself. Because he in 2002 World Cup with Brazil. Oh, yeah. And then you know, it's those of four and then he puts them out again. Yeah. So this is the end of Svanie's 10 year as well. Isn't it within the end? Yeah. And Portugal's first semi final since 1966. Yeah. Big. Yeah. And in England. Oh, let me go to the game where we see lots of viral clips of France knockout Brazil. One of our onary volley from a free kick. Because this is the game where Zadan is probably one of the best. Individual performances ever, isn't it? You just run the show from start to finish. It is a Dan Masterclass. He's doing his turns. He's doing his amazing first touches, playing fantastic passes, setting up goals. Yeah, it's really good. They have played Brazil. I mean, Brazil have one shot on goal in a game. That's under her dog for Brazil. It also probably tells you a little bit about the fact that Brazil wouldn't. Yeah, they're approach. Yeah. So yeah, France who stumbled through the group stage now, being Spain and Brazil. So they do it the hard way, but they're doing it because Zadan is getting in there basically. semi finals then. So you've got to say, finals between Germany and Italy and Portugal and France. There's two Portugal France first. Zadan Pelti, the repeat of the year 84 and the year 2000. Semi's. Those games are better games in this one. Yeah. But it is the Dan who gets France through to finally again, knockout Portugal. We see those Cristiano do tears again. Tell us about the theme of his career. Good. Good stuff. Cracking stuff. Yeah. And then you know, this game is a great game. This is one of the best games ever. Yeah. Despite it being no, no, 190 minutes. Yeah. So it's a game that finishes NIL NIL after 90 minutes. NIL NIL after first half of extra time. As you say, NIL NIL after 190 minutes. And then it erupts with two goals in the last two minutes, but it is a great game. You love this game. All right. I am a watch this with my dad and my brother later night. And it's just that right the end of the game. It looks like it's going to go penalties. It's been a bit of a dinged on battle. The whole game. We've had the crossbar hit. We had amazing saves. We've had just fantastic football or match like both teams going for it, which is like great to watch. And then right towards the end of the game. It's a corner for it to get kind of cleared. Ball ends up with Piano. He's a lovely little short pass to left back. Recently, Fabio Grosso. And before the World Cup, Grosso is a bit of an unknown player reason. He's not the same leverage to kind of borrow the investors and so on. And it comes to him. And it's a first time killing a left footed shot. Kills right away around the far corner, pass ends, they've been into the goal. And then reminiscent of Marco Tardelli in 82. He runs off to kind of do the screaming celebration, shouting like, oh my god, oh my god. And he's just like shaking his head. Can't believe it. Broke with acrobat of floor by the Italian team. It's an amazing moment. Grosso writes his name in world football history. But then even when that's done in and Jimi is seemingly active here, Jimi is still doing trying to get the equalizer. Everyone's gone up. And then it's a fantastic breakaway from it to the amazing counterattack. Borgets played in a little flick from Chiladinho into the path of Dau Piero, who just side-fits it for nested into the top corner. Tumiel Italy, amazing scenes in Dortmund. What a match. Yeah. And it puts out the host, isn't it? You know, it's sizable for Germany because they really wanted to do well in this. They wanted to make the final. They've done better than many people thought they would have done. And but they it comes to an end and it sets up a cracking final. We've had France. We've had some good Italy, truly games over the years. 1970, of course, the game is sent to you between the two. The final in 82 with the Tardinia game is also against Jimmy. So yes, and fantastic, fantastic matches there. And it's like play our final Germany. Do win that. So there's something there for them. They win the three running as Portugal. It's fine. It's called twice. There's an ungold from Betty as well. But yeah, Portugal dominated it. Very skilled once. Jimmy did the job. So a nice third blanche on home soil. Yeah, nice bronze medal to get there. Two, two long ranges of a Schweinstein, isn't it? Two good goals. Right. Could try to see them more than you think in this walk up. We'll get onto the main one. There's one to go. We mentioned Cal Joppeley big before the walk up. We've mentioned the corruption, perhaps to get the walk up for Germany. But as we see the next few were kept to kind of a theme. It's not entirely localizing this torment, per se. Referee contrabacies, even of Ballon, you and Bigg, Graham polls, three yellow cards, of course, really not a good look for him. You got him at the market in as well. Yeah. So some of the Dutch fans, obviously, the classic gym where the later Jose and they had got themselves some orange later Jose and the Dutch orange army is it? They all turn up in orange. They're forced to strip outside the stadium and take off their their later housing because Jose and dispute over sponsorship between Budweiser and a Dutch brewery that they must have had on there. So a funny little story there, a little niche one. And those got that fish prosecutors charged former German officials, including Theo Savanseig, and the full of gang near Spach was fraud as well. So they go. Yeah. And like we said, the other thing you know, it was unprecedented level of cards and, you know, yellow and red cards. There's a red chord break in 345 yellow cards and 28 red cards in the tournament. They even have hampered her for his referee. And I said, I said, bladder, bladder, talked about changing some of the rules. So players with this more games and possibly and also taking off certain yellow caps at certain points so the players wouldn't miss the finals. Not now. And obviously the grain pole incident, so definitely refereeing was one of those things that was noted. Okay. Right. Let's go onto the final because this is actually a really good final. Full of drama, a generally decent match. I remember watching this, of course, you would have mentioned, remembered it. And we've been in school. We were both in the same school at this point. And but most people wanted France to win the World Cup. I wanted to see because I just feared those players. But there was a real love of France going to the tournament. I do think they had most of the neutral support. It's one of those games where you can just remember it straight away. We don't even need the note to this game doing. France get early penalty, don't they? In the first 10 minutes, which is a Dan converts it in truce of Dan style with a cheeky pinnaker off the bar. Bungie the line. Luck it. Lucky boy. Yeah, you've written bravely because it bounces out, doesn't it? And it's like, is it gone in? But it, you know, it is, it is cut off the line. But it, and then a day, a line's in referee, you might not have given it. Yeah. And that penalty is given away by Marka Matamati. So that name crops up again. Zidane schools the penalty. That name crops up again. And then it's really level through Marka Matamati. Always there again. Nice. It comes. He redeems himself a little bit. Lovely. Pilar corner. And then it's the hit the bar just before I've times I look at Tony and they go in one but it's a good first half as an end to say for a start. It's the second half. No goals. Tony has a head of disallowed. For offside. So full time is one or something that balance, where's he's going to go? Extra time then we see one of the best saves of all time. I think there's definitely better saves, but I think there's a place on points. The two plays involved the Dan and Booth on the site. So two names to away, I think in maybe, you know, top 10 players of all time. The great header by the Dan and Booth on just somehow reaches it, tips over the bar. So Dan kind of shouts, doesn't he like, I like you so like, how do you save that? But that's not one extra time as you're meant for. No, in the hundred and tenth minute, Zidane. Possibly other than the hand of God, the most iconic will cup image. I kind of be isn't it? Yeah. He headbutts Marka Matamati. - Who? - Him again? - Is a little bit of a trouble maker, let's say.
he absolutely flaws it with the headbutt though. You sometimes see head to head, little stuff, where players and puts on push against your head. Sometimes they'll drop for no reason on the back of that. But this is so hard. He had put himself into the, like, it just stirring him into the chest. And he just, he drops the flaws. I think matter as he does make more of it than probably there was. He would floor me, but yeah, I mean, the level of a fury and force, as he Dan's running, sort of, I think he's gone out for a gold kick and they both went in back to their position. Zidane's jogging and matter as he pulls his shit, and Stan turns around, what you say. They exchange words and, you know, you see that all the time on the pitch. What you don't see is the reaction of Zidane. He was one of the greatest modern footballers of all time. Yeah. In his final ever game, leaving the world stage in the World Cup final, already scored almost certainly going to take a penalty when it comes to penalties in a little bit. But he's not there to take that because he headbutts and floors matter out to you. He's amazing, isn't it? It's shock. It's like, "Ult at a shock, when you see it." Well, I think on TV, when we were, when it was broadcast, we'd, we always seen was like the players in the sideline and the referee being a bit like, "Go and notice lines me." And we're like, "What's going on here? What's happened?" Yeah. And he paused at the very card and sends it down off. And we were like, "Why is he sending it down off?" Yeah. And he showed his habit and was like, "Oh!" You think about the Gabrielle and Harlan incident a couple of weekends ago when they were writing heads and it was like a tiny flick and like, "Oh, it's terrible." Yeah. And they're, "Yeah, this is both force." I never said, "And they all miss it because the ref misses it." Because I said, "I think it's going for goal, okay, they're not jogging back." And the ref doesn't see it. The lines when they return is their position. It's only the fourth of fish and you see it. There's a massive fit of controversy linked to that because they're saying that the fourth of fish will use the video replay, which of course didn't exist by then to see the head. But now it's never been proven. And anyway, it was a string rate. Yeah, of course it was. It's not an incorrect decision. But yeah, you're right. It's that when you see the replay, you go, "I can't believe that's just happening to work out final." That's a staggering. And of course, Zadana's that famous walk off the pitch pass "Wilco Trophy" and all the cameras that taking that pitch aren't they, that iconic shot there. So Zadana sent off. It goes the distance. It goes to penalties. As I said before, it knows Zadana for the shootout. And it's the score. All five of their penalties. David Trezegay, who had broken Italian hearts in year 2000 when his golden goal hits the bar with his penalty. And it's that man again. It's Fabio Grosso with the winning penalty. "Wilco, I'll be sad." Yeah, he's been holding all the big moments. "I hate him and only one black Mrs as well. I always like it when more than one miss." Because then he feel like, "You're bad." "I feel so bad for Trezegay." Because it's basically his all Trezegay. And that's the matter. Matt Arati, your squirt is pen in the shootout as well. Yeah, he is involved in it. Listen to this, Italian's line at then. Bufon Zambrata, Canavaro, Matt Arati, Grosso, C'mon, AZ, Ketuso, Piro, Perossa, Totti, Tony. And then K. off the bench, Derossi, your Quinta and Delpiero, that's such a good squad as they are. That is really strong. Yeah. I mean, yeah. You can see why they won the World Cup. I'd call the Kimmichis of Canavaro lifting the World Cup trophy. Really, I can't. He goes on to win ball and throw. I was in an all round with dread, all those sort of things. What is the headline though? The next day is the headbutt. Yeah. I mean, the math thing about Zadan's career now is you say the words are down. The first one comes to mind is headbutt. Yeah, I wonder if you asked your maybe not year was possibly so here was it. Zadan? Well, possibly year four or five or six is, you know, nine tell 11 year olds. What do you know about Zadan? I wonder if they would know headbutt as the person. I think they would say probably know it more than, not yet, we'll cut for some. Yeah, I don't think they'd say, oh, it's got two headers. And then they could finally not yet. Okay, yeah. So this is crazy head eyes out towards and there was that whole mystery of what did he say? Yeah. What could he have possibly said to making react in that way? And there's all sorts of lip reading claims. And the person that comes to lots of the press put out maybe notable by who puts that the time to suddenly the day star, not three of the best newspapers are by any means. Yeah. And then they say ratarazzi calls the down the son of a terrorist or mass ratatzi says, I didn't say it. And he actually wins a libel down and just claim from all the newspapers. So that's really not what was said. It's kind of for quite a long time. And so Dan, he does say in it and it was said to do with his sister. Yeah. So Zadan believed that it was said about his mother or he certainly he publicly says it was said about his mother. His mother was really in hospital at the time as well. And obviously very, very emotive subject then. Zadan says that he was justified his actions as he went out with the star, Matarazzi, insist that he didn't say the most mother. In the end he admits he says something about Zadan's sister instead. So I didn't say to him either, but he called his sister. And obviously in that case, Zadan, you know, he doesn't justify the head, but I would certainly suggest that Matarazzi does his bit to win Zadan up as he'd been doing his job. Phil Maddox is a damn misdeed way worse comments than his career. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it must just be the whole last game you career got 10 minutes after you career. You know, look at final, the pressure, the sort of atmosphere. It's just snap, doesn't it? Yeah. See you, Red Boom. He says, he sure he says, I'll give you my shirt after the game. You sort of like, Gelfay, I'll give you after the game. And he says, I'd prefer your sister instead or something like that, you know, it's not pleasant. No. Matarazzi has got too much ban for his party incident. Stan also got too much ban, which I guess he's still serving. I guess he's, yeah, I was, I was told people that apparently he switched it for community service. He did two those community services instead. Okay. Nice. It's been parodied. It seems like the Simpsons family guy as well. Yeah. But it's an instant. That's just like gone beyond football and everyone knows about it. Yeah. And then it culminated in that famous five meter bronze sculpture of it, obviously, of the headbutt, which was unveiled in Paris in 2012 and then moved to Qatar in 2015. But he got removed because it promoted violence. Yeah. And reinstalled later on. Oh, nonsense. Give us the headbutt and statue. I think it still exists somewhere. I know he's still somewhere, but he says it's a quality. Yes. If you got it, we'll put it in the garden. That'd be all right. Yeah. And if you don't have a statue, you don't want just like a knee slide statue, like you see or a sheer of arms up statue, have it where your headbone is someone brilliant. Right. Let's go on to the ratings of this World Cup then. Let's rate the hosts. No. I don't think you can criticize him anyway. They've got brilliant stadium. Nothing near. They didn't spend the huge amount of money like some did, but they need to. The stadium's a good though. They're still. I don't know when they like do you think the the afshalker, the galshinkerkshima, the England lost to the screen? Yeah. You know, pretty modern stuff, wasn't it? And they did the signal I've done the park. They did the aliens arena was built by Bimeo, of course. It was pretty decent. Yeah. And it's a great fan experience. It's great. 8.5. Great place to visit. Great training grounds because they used to get infrastructure to get around. Bada and Barrio, where England and Barrio and Bada and Barrio, it wasn't it? It was the Wags, wasn't it. Well, the players being distracted by their wives and girlfriends. Yes, Spent didn't exactly control that. The NBLS was about it. But the switch to Capoele afterwards, and the difference in managerial approach. Because the Wags had as much time in their presses, the team didn't they, I think. They played five years. Yeah, right, 8.05. Right. Let's go for the players. Well, good, isn't it? I've seen this really tricky to not give it a touch. I have to be speaking, isn't it, for players? Lending at five? Yeah. Okay. And it can't be no, I need to be 10, because you can always get better. You know, I say L, good squad, but didn't all come together. Although the players were still good. No, I've played five. 9.5. Yeah, I think it's the best for players, isn't it? I don't think anything can beat this so far. Actjes. Got no like, I want it once. Good final. Good final. Great semi-final. Ballad, Nürburg. If that and you're in big, what a game. A couple of things like penalty outs, capital, of the extra time one, the Maxordry, yes, game. Not bad. Yeah, good. Good. Good. Open game. That's good. 8. 8. Okay. Let's go on to the iconic moments. This has got to be a high, isn't it? The Dan's head, but it's like you said, only probably beaten by how the god and the god and the goal of the century. Maybe cars are a bit of goal, but it's trying to be up there, isn't it? Yeah. Quashtun. Yeah. And then you've got obviously again, but Nürburg comes back. Grosso celebration. Ronaldo's wink. Ronaldo's wink. Good. Well, I have a celebration, yeah. 8 again. Possibly more than a head, but great. And Paul's the other cards. Yeah. - No. - How are you, Rachel? Nine?
- Yeah, it's fine, but it's so I can't have it. - What about the controversy? - Controversy is high again, isn't it? There's obviously the controversy that's never been proven around the missing sort of 6.8 million euros. There's the controversy coming up to it with Carl Trappoli. - Yes, there you go. - The Miss Cardin Cultivacy, in the fact there's lots. I mean, it's a controversy. The daily press afterwards, after World Cup says, has the beautiful game turned ugly and there's this big headline and story about it and just saying all this displays of cheating and unruly behaviour. - Which is a fair point. - Yeah. - Yeah, and the BBC in particular, right in article about iconic images, and they said how really like unforgettable moments captured on camera that you'll live forever which have. So yeah, I'd think it is high. - Or was it? What's your rate in there? - Eight. - Eight, okay. Cool. What about the legacy? Tricky this. - Well, we've got some stuff for everybody. So first one, Germany, it's a big thing for me. We say the walk has been nation building things. 54 was massive for nation building in terms of winning that World Cup after the Second World War. 74 as well, the whole East Germany, West Germany thing. But this fuck up, we mentioned that when Germany had this team at the start of the tournament, the fans weren't really behind them. Then they got down in the tournament, similar to France in '98. And then we started to see a sudden increase in paid-jot experience in Germany, flags waving, which had been a thing that was usually frowned upon in Germany, especially because of the connotation to the Second World War. - Yeah. You can't really be paid-jotic German. You know, it brings into question your character and what are you involved in and what do you believe about Germany. It is a really tricky situation. And so for Germany to actually unite host this tournament, get behind the nation. It's really important for them. I think it's really important for Germany. I think it's important because it starts to change possibly some conversations about referring again and eventually to certainly 2010 builds into assistance coming in. It thinks like go to technology, it would come to. - Yeah, the legacy of the images, you know, the head, but the legacy of moments, I think is important. - Yeah, we got a lot, it was quite a good offer of players because they had the old guard, the buffans, Ronaldo, Figo, Zedans, mixing with those younger players, like Renate Kusharanardo and Messi and Rooney. It was like, oh, it wasn't like some more cups where all the players have passed it. Or the players are too young to really be names yet. This was kind of like a really good mixture of all sorts. - I think a lot of that now is hindsight too. So Jonathan Stevenson for BBC was well, they need footballer eyes the day I got to find him. - He was good, he was good. He was good, he was good. - He judged the World Cup on these things. New stars are interesting considering this is Messi and Ronaldo. - It was well-pair. Disappointing World Cup and no real breakthroughs. Classic matches, cautious coaches do not make for classic games. Classic goals, plenty of studners to save him, say, even if they did drier, I'm just a good one, say, wasn't it? But even set blattemouth, said, "The football isn't bad, but there's not enough goals." And when there's two few goals, the public isn't very enthusiastic the essence of the game's goals. If it's an open game, there's enough room for 11 players with 11 defenders, not enough space. So again, impact straight after. Shocks, no alarm, no surprises. But yeah, I suppose we didn't have many big shocks. - Then? - And then he said one of the big things is the iconic images. And again, there is a Guardian article where some of the big names of the Guardian still around today all have their opinion on it. And they say very similar. And they say lots of stars, people like Canavaron and people like, it was in the Italian side, when he said, but they're also disappointment. Two such so Barry Client Denning said, "Beck, it was a big disappoint." We've got Sean Ingles said, that Ronaldinho is this point. So there is elements of it that, you know, we remember it now, Cosby was 13 as one of the greatest workups of all time. I don't know if everyone was saying "My Grace, we're looking for all time." But it is still a good World Cup. Well, this ended Randy and his career really at top level 'cause he was to bow and door when there were only best players of the world by a mile. He's standing in avation at the San Teo Gabbino bow. But he has such a poor tournament, I thought he was going to be playing off the tournament. And he never hit those heights. I mean, near those ever again, did he? And he kind of just created kind of peed it out a little bit after this. Yeah, what legacy now? What's your reckon? Seven, six, seven. What has lasted this day from it, I suppose, other than the images? I think it is a 6.4507. It must have been part of what was your most? 6.5507. Overrated then. So seven, seven point five? No, I think it's higher. It's higher than, yeah. So I don't know how I was going to do it. We boosted it ever. We have boosted it with some of the big score there so 9.5's and if you average it out, we're probably looking around about eight. I think it's just below an eight. I think it's 10.5. 7.5, fine. Right. 7.5, now a 10. We'll cut them for the 2006 tournament. Truly iconic. I can't at all, but in those are massive moments.
