The discussion centers on the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, as the first in Asia and the new millennium. The podcast explores whether this tournament is underrated, noting its futuristic feel and unique moments like Ronaldo's infamous haircut, which distracted media from his injury. Qualification stories highlight England's dramatic campaign under new manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, culminating in David Beckham's free kick to secure a 2-2 draw with Greece and top the group. The Netherlands and Colombia notably missed out, while Senegal and China debuted. Australia set records with massive wins, including 31-0 against American Samoa, but lost in the playoffs. The hosts spent $5.6 billion on 20 venues, with Yokohama Stadium hosting the final. The Fevernova ball became iconic, and the tournament averaged 2.5 goals per match. Despite some forgettable aspects—like poor mascots and time zone challenges for global viewers—the 2002 World Cup is remembered for its distinct identity, emerging stars, and memorable upsets, making it a unique chapter in football history.
Everyone was going on and on about my leg injury. I was sick and tired of hearing about it, so I cut my hair like that. I asked my teammates what they thought, and they said, "It's horrible. You can't keep it like that." I thought, "This could work." Sure enough, the journalists forgot about my injury immediately, all they could ask about was my hair. I could relax. That is a great opening quote from Ronaldo, the original Ronaldo, Arnone, a player who will come to define a 2002 World Cup. The 17th edition of the World Cup and the first one that we really remember. It is. It is the one that we have properly in. Now we remember this one, and you remember that haircut for sure. I remember some children having it in school. I remember kids having it. There was one on the news. One kid having the Ronaldo haircut, and the one kid having Sven go and X and X. Oh! It was the main group. Yes, this is a really interesting World Cup. I really enjoyed looking back through this one, definitely. It is. It is the first World Cup that I've joined host. So this one hosted in South Korea and Japan, the first ever, the first ever hosted in Asia as well. The start of a new millennium. This is 2002, of course. We've gone through the 20th century of 1930, all the 98 and now we're in to the new millennium. The promise of time of technology, of video games, of the rise of the internet. Because you're not born. The menu bell, why is you K? You know, it was all going on. You have to say, when you think of technology and advancements, South Korea and Japan seem like the perfect host to really define this sort of era. Yeah, both sort of very modern countries, Japan, a very futuristic type country. And it does stick out a little bit this World Cup, doesn't it? In even footage of it, I think it imps of what we will see as we talk about it into some of the teams that go far and this one that don't really raise their heads again, you know, it's a very out of the ordinary World Cup in some of these games. Yeah, I messaged you didn't know last week, and it just seems a bit like an odd one. It's like, if someone said to me 2006 came straight after 98, four years after I go, yeah, okay. Yeah, that seems like it works. And this one, you watch about the footage, it just seems like in its own kind of world, but it was great. But I think what go on this kind of live is podcast. Is this an underrated World Cup? And that's what we'll kind of discuss as we go through. Is I do think it's almost a bit forgotten about? I think you could translate 98, it's got loads of those, I can't remember, it was close to here in France. 2006, obviously it's close again in Germany. We've got moments we'll talk about in that World Cup. And I feel like this one gets a bit missed in the beginning. It's time zone impacted as well, meaning that people didn't watch everything. Yeah, I think that's one little bit. So we'll go to that a little bit, but shall we go into qualification first? Yeah. Okay, so this is another 32 team World Cup. It's it's worked. 98 is shown that this expansion of FIFA of the size of the torment is a positive. The football is stayed at a decent level, and it is going to continue. And notice below, this is the first World Cup without shall have an orange since 1974. This is now set bladder era of FIFA rule. Definitely not an era of integrity and transparency. No, it's back to that quote. Absolute power corrupts absolutely bladder. Very much live that along with some of his brothers and sisters in the boardroom, his FIFA. We now possibly are logging for set bladder to come back compared to submit. Well, yeah, he is certainly an iconic image of 2000 football, isn't he? He is. He was everywhere, isn't he? So this walk I had 199 nations entering. So almost at 200 now has a massive jump up from those early World Cup so close to 200 and this one, though, 199. Three teams were qualified as a state, South Korea, Japan and France. They were the last defending champion to qualify automatically. They scrapped after this, I think to do FIFA rankings and, you know, I think France dropped a few places because it didn't pick a petitive case. It's not the idea. Preppy, there is a you want to be playing competitive football. If you're playing four years of friendly, so two years of friendly, there isn't ideal for any green. And you'd imagine most hosts qualify any airsoft, most winners, previously would qualify anyway. Yeah, well, they have they haven't they since so it's it's worth 15 away first of this is the same as not yet 15 you a for five South American three North American five African for Asian entrance. Shall we start with you a for who are the other group winners who qualify straight away? So it's a surprise a surprise. I wouldn't rush her in their group, but they do. They're looking at us and we group in a. All right. Portugal and Denmark and Sweden and Poland and Croatia and Spain Italy and England top their groups. Yeah, and we know it was the first wall cup that I would technically went to because I went through a few of these whales. Qualification games I went to watch whales be Poland and we lost to one at home. I also went to watch whales versus Belarus and we did win one nail through a John Hartz Engel. At the time I thought it was like the best day of my life going to watch whales play in the football and the stadium. And I looked back at the stats is only 10,000 there for the game in a 75,000 stadium. So that's been dead and it was the same day as England Greece game for two to so we'll get us out in a minute. So whales watching pretty pretty rubbish. You said that's really where they. Where's where they came in the in fifth place out of six in their group only topping Armenia. They only picked up nine points out of 10 game that. So bad isn't it is not poor looking at that group now if you have drawn with Poland Ukraine Belarus Norway and I mean you would fancy Wales to win that but back then no chance. Yeah, absolutely and we also have no place for Northern Ireland and no place for Scotland in this one too. So the other nations aren't there. One of our sort of near nations friends across the water will be featuring and they have a quite interesting little story later. I'll just get towards the tunnel. Ireland qualifying and England across the England's group is really notable this will come this is probably their most iconic qualification campaign ever. So this is a quite a few story at the start of Kevin Keegan judge after year 2000. And the probably the first notable game is a defeat to Germany. They lose one little home last ever game at the old Wembley. Of course, you know England would have wants to go out on a high there they lose their old enemies Germany. A free kick from Deep Maham and from about from about 35 yards kind of Daisy cut us in Keegan leaves them. He quit his job as England at the end bit of a shop to everyone that incomes Swedish manager Sven Gore and Erickson who has done a few things and in that year at the time. But a bit of a known. But a known really to a lot of. Yes, yeah, very much so you know sort of seniors with a playboy type manager as well. Yeah, I know he he was the first foreign manager of England. He was yeah, and that was certainly something that caused a little bit of consternation still does today foreign managers because there is a fair argument to say that in national team show him you manage by some for that nation. It wouldn't work with lots of. So it's just a little more minded big nations like to say well just be managed by one nationality that the national team are country. Sven certainly got a little bit of. That star, but I think he quickly grew to be a bit of he's loved by his. He is and I think this is the reason why because this is the qualification campaign when England get their revenge on Germany when they go to Munich to play when they're a turn game and beat them five one. I end watching this. Yeah, I was a kid and it because he was on beat with BBC one. It was messy wasn't it was such a huge moment. Yeah, obviously was the last less channels on TV. So everyone probably was watching that game. The Michael Owen hat trick of course. Five one in between two big themes was not a school I knew would ever see back then it was like a genuine like no, I'm it's Germany, you know, we're doing Germany on home. So it's at the lead as well. So yeah, England could back with five one. And position and qualified as a group winner and all comes out of the final game. Germany are playing Finland at home. You probably found it during to in that England are playing Greece at home also advanced England to win that. This is pre greases year 2004 heroics. Do you need to join the game no no with with Finland opens door for England all they need is a draw however they go behind one nail to Greece. The teddy Sharon and equalizers then they go to one down and it's looking like playoffs for England which is not what they want. Into the last minute ticks over David Beckham. I think he said a couple of chances couple of three kicks have gone his way and then 93rd minute. He got a you know, even as well. So we have to say what a free kick is a quality free kick is exactly where he needed to go placed perfectly. You know, he couldn't put it there with his hands better. It was amazing. It was such a good free kick and it was one of those great in the most moments because they qualified automatically. They top the group against Germany to play off. It was really really significant. And you know, important moment in Sven's reign as we say. It falls apart of the songs. I mean the commentary song was out of the ball or one of the songs. I'll get on the minute. Yeah.
So definitely a really big moment. - This is thing on the staff for David Beckham Redemption arc. - Of course. - Rob Knight, yeah. - Yeah, I'm not. - I'm leaving the Wales Belarus game earlier on. I think he was like, we won the game. So we left it earlier and we were, as we were leaving, we were walking down through town and Cardiff and round where the burkey is, there was like a curry or something. Lose your windows or something, maybe a better shop, loads of windows, there was a TV in the window and it was just a huge crowd of people watching. David Beckham, I'd score that free kick. It was a crazy, I'm gonna try and poke my head through all this gap of people. It was a massive moment, but that's just one team that's qualified. The other team's qualified then for the playoffs where Germany, Turkey, Belgium and Ireland. - Yeah. - Now Ireland, big moment for them. Nice to be in the World Cup of course. Not always there. It all falls apart a little bit, we'll get onto that later. - Yes, it does. There's a film, isn't there? I don't know when about it. - Yeah. - Right, so let's go on to, nobody's been doing qualified that. So there's no Netherlands in this World Cup. Very strong team at this time. You know, massive players or Romania who had been ever present for quite a long time up to this point. - Yeah, really a fair in the playoffs, Nelladans come third in the air group. They, they miss out to the Republic of Ireland who actually get that playoff place. So it's a real sizable moment there. - Yeah. Asia then only two teams qualify for Asia because the hosts obviously take it up to those spots already. China and their only ever World Cup, which for a country of over a billion people, not a great record, is it? - No, it's not, it isn't it. You see it all the time. We note that they're very good at snooking out, for example. There's not the sports, they're very good at. - You got everything. - They look champion. - They just can't play for anything surely. There's been a lot of people, there's some talents there. - I'm sure in the future they will be more Chinese dominance in football. They tried, didn't they? They tried with it in the domestic even. - Not happening. - About them. - South America then who's qualified from South America? - We've got obviously, we said every time. Arjun Cine, they're there. - Brazil are there. You're a Gwai there, although they're not as ever presently well, but they're there. Paraguay and a day being for Ecuador. - Yeah, Colombia missed out on this World Cup. So they missed out despite winning a couple of America in 2001. So I've been the fourth ranked team in the world at this. - What? - To a really strong team. They don't make it. So that's a bit of an upset the apple cart there. North America then we've got the usual suspects. USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, all qualified. Who you kind of expect back then. However, there's a match between Mexico, Costa Rica in the Quadrucated Cape Bay known as the Aztecazzo. So Aztec and American Azteczo put it together. It's a bit of an exaggeration, a bit over the top. This basically just a defeat. Mexico basically lose to Costa Rica. It's the first time they'd lost a World Cup qualifier at home. But that's all it is really. They don't go out or anything. - They get there anyway. - But it's got his label of an Aztecazzo and has a little Wikipedia page, everything. Which a bit over top, but there we go. Who qualified from Africa? - We've got Camaroon in there studying kicks. - Well, I bet Brackets kick. 'Cause this is, they qualified wearing that sleeveless kick. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - I love it. So I caught it. They wouldn't allow it to wear it in the World Cup, though. - No, yeah. It was banned. Yeah, so they'd worn it for the African nation's like, what? It was like iconic and it was cool, wasn't it? - Yeah, it was, wow. - And then FIFA didn't hit the FIFA regulations for kicks. So they had to add these, please on the side, didn't they? - Bad, really, I caught it, kid. No, a G-meer in there, who obviously was in a favor through the 90s as well. - Tundis here in there, South Africa there. And then we've got a debut. And again, this time for Senegal, who will have a very good tournament. - I remember, before the World Cup, 2002 African nations. So only about four months before the World Cup started. Cameroon and Senegal are in the final. And I remember being on BBC and watching the game with my brother. And it was like, wow, and the football was really good. And it was the first introduction of players like Jufe, who was being heralded as like the next best player ever, the only thing. And Eto, of course, for Cameroon. So fantastic players there. We'll see how far they go in this tournament too. Australia, then, the OSC is a really notable World Cup qualification. It isn't usually, usually it's kind of New Zealand or Australia had come top and then lose the playoff here. That happens again here. But before that, Australia baked two records with two victories, who against? - So they've got a group of, and this means South Africa rugby. - Kid does say it. - They think so. It's Australia, Fiji Tonga Samoa, although good rugby players, not necessarily known for it being football and American Samoa too. And they break a future world record, a Guinness World record, it's still there in the books. They win, well, they beat Tonga 22 now, pretty impressive. And 31 now against American Samoa. He's stacked over 31 now. - Yeah, 31 now. What I win that is, I mean, it makes a mockery of the OSC qualification. And we'll let you see Australia leave that, of course, to join the Asian one instead. Forgive this kind of reason, not really competitive enough. All the games in this group were played over the course of a single week in like a small town or small city in Australia. It looks like the table. Australia played for one for 66 goals for four games and then conceded. Archie Thompson also breaks record for the most goalscording in the game, the 13. So four hat tricks and extra one, just for good measure. Yeah. So Eric and Samoa, unfortunately, you'll always be remembered for being that team. I got smashed by Australia. - Yeah, it becomes a bit of a quick question and nothing more, either. - Yeah, so I feel like they'll do miss out. They'll lose a year of white in a playoff. Shall we go on to the hosts? Okay, so we've got South Korea and Japan, of course, the first ever hosts. 20 venues. - That's a lot of it. - That is a lot of the 10 in France. We doubled it as 10 in each of South Korea and Japan. - What's the largest venues? - We've got the Yokohama Stadium, 72,000, pretty impressive and the day-goo stadiums, 68,000. They are sort of, I remember, again, watching the videos of some of the goals, some of the really sort of, one of their new lots of them and futuristic looking, the support of the being one of them. - Cool, yeah. - That like, yeah, like a spaceship. And it was the first one I ever saw with a pitch that would go out to the stadium and then come back into the shopper between baseball and football. - And it was on the game, why would we call the road to the World Cup or whatever it would be about then. - Yeah. - And yeah, definitely. I played a heck of a lot of that video game, being nine, then I spoke to you of nine. And I think you must have been on the PC. I had it initially, but definitely. I think when you remember this World Cup, you remember the feeling of it being a bit just like a bit unique really. - Yeah, probably futuristic. - The mascots, we have three mascots this World Cup, Ato, Ato, Kaz, Nick, three futuristic CGI alien things. Not good. - No, no, no, no. - I mean, it's very much of the time. - Yeah. - It's very much of the host I suppose. - Yeah. - But it was, yeah. It's not great. If you told like the average person in the street, could you like, think, draw them, they say no. - Mm-hmm. - I would struggle. - Yeah. - There you go. Boat street mascots, not the best. Japan alone on this World Cup, spent $5.6 billion. This is a hefty, hefty cost. 64 matches, of course, again, 161 goals. So a 2.5 is too average, not too bad. A classic format again, eight groups, last 16. But we have goals and goals again. So, goals and goals is back for a second World Cup in a row. We'll see how that goes. Total attendance of 2.7 million, 42,000 average. So, nobody the stadium's here. We've got two decent sized ones for the two biggest, but then the rest are kind of around the 40,000 mark. - Yeah. - Isn't the tenest figures I have anything mind-blowing. Still less in America, which only had 24 teams in it. The football was a Deedis Farron over, iconic, gold football. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - And it was the first football I remember of having that debate of I am moved, funny in the keepers don't like it. But it's a nice ball, isn't it? - It's just a iconic one again. And again, I think I probably had it in the garden afterwards when they were doing it cheap, not one of the real ones. But certainly afterwards, maybe one of the size, sort of three ones. But again, it's like it sets you memory because we were, which we said, nine of this tournament. The football is firmly 18, you know, conscious does for the first time, and it is so exciting. - Absolutely, I can see that for the ball just as well as Ben. - Mead is not as good though. - We had a really good peak with 98 with Dario G in Ricky Martin and all the boys. But we do have England's, we're on the ball, Banton Deck. - That was good. And Sven's, Sven's, Sven. - Oh, God, that one as well, yeah. - Sven's, Sven's, Sven. - Garin, Eric, Sven. Oh my God. He's a lovely geezer. Yeah. - Even though he's a reader, yeah. - Yeah, he's a brazier. - Who's that man? - I can remember. It was parrots. - Just too last to come down the pub. - Yeah, yeah. - Where are the balls, good time, yeah? - Not bad. - It's not bad, is it? PJ and Duncan back for England's special. - With their Hesky to win. So not by one, yes. - Yeah, not bad, not bad. - Yeah, it's not bad. - It's no free lines in the world. - World in motion. - It's not bad again. - All the time. - All the time. - I remember it. - Poppin it, pop music about then. - Yeah. - Tomic Kittin and West Life in the pub.
staff on it. Not another best music. Right. Stickers though, I had this sticker album. This is a big one. I had a free with Match magazine and I had it. And you know what, I've got a bit of a surprise here. Oh, fuck. So, be on eBay. It's set way more than the, of why I would have paid back to 2002. But I'm going back to our two packets of stickers from the 2002 World Cup. Or a bit of ASMR there. If you're on videos, switch to the camera. I know. Open packs. One for you. One for me. Do you want to, should we open up and see who we get? We will. Right. This is a big moment. I'll see if these are going to go on my album later on. Right. Anyone we recognize? What is the first one? Show camera. We've got heavy eight Ernesto Shabbentown from, from player along at home. You're a guy. You're a guy. Right. I've got a, a double a, these are the double. So the players that weren't notable. Two Russian players got Yuri Cofton and Igor Chuganov. Legends of the game. So, I got a goals Omar Duff. I just want to get, just want to get a shining. Right. I got a Paraguay's Roberto Miguel Acunya. There you go. Del Rob Buckley. So, Africa. Oh, I gosh. Yeah. Got onto the players. Yeah. And this walk out. Oh, nice. I got Pierre Wilmake. I think it you Cameroon. Teasing player there. Got a friend team photo. Oh, that's not bad. They don't have any time to go. We've got each other in that World Cup. Yeah. I've got Nuno Gomez. There's a note. There's a notable name. Great one. Francesco Arca. Yeah. From Paraguay. Nice. I got E.K. Shununmoo from Nigeria. He's a golkeeper. And finally, Arif Irdem from Turkey. You have a good time. And Abdallah, Jaman from Saudi Arabia. So, not the best place of this world. Not the place that we remember the World Cup front. But what a moment. Opening 2002 World Cup stickers yet again. You still can't beat opening up a sticker. Taking me back to being nine years old. Anything else? It's like, what's that? Six, seven in a packet there? So probably like 30 p.m. time. Well, they were $70.70 cents in Canada. From Canada. 70 cents. Maybe I still say I'm in Canada. How much are the current world? I didn't pay 70 cents. I paid a good few credit for those. But I'd have a go. They did throw in their free packet of Emily 2021 stickers as well. No, no. That famous season. There we go. Right. Enjoy that. Yeah. There we go. You cannot see me in the opening of Pakistan. There you have it. And then the immediate disappointment when they're all open. Yeah. And I bet they're probably all swaps. Okay. Right. Let's get back onto the. That's great. Let's get back onto the host. So, South Korea and Japan historically have really got on. They're not too countries, even though they're close to each other. History wise, not the best of friends. World or two and so on. Yeah. You know, tensions between the two teams. So you wouldn't really expect them to co-host and walk up together. They originally both wanted to host it individually. So Japan put a bit in, South Korea put a bit in. And FIFA were kind of saying, I'm not really feeling it. We're much good at Mexico. Yeah. So South Korea, Japan said, well, we'll go together and this because they were told, if you go together, that's the best chance of you getting enough votes. FIFA bringing people together. FIFA, and I'm sure it was all about board. There was no, no, no, many changing hands. North Korea wants to get in on the actual first. They wanted to co-host with South Korea. That's that. South Korea, I think we're pretty up for it. I think in this might reunify countries in making you know, that didn't happen. I think got that massive statement. North Korea is going to do this. So North Korea, unfortunately, we're able to do it. So they decided, you know what then, we'll host our own games, our own rival games called the ARIRAN games at the same time, which is like a cultural best of gymnastics and so on. So I don't think it did just well. It's a little cut. But they did host it together and did you a good job, Japan and South Korea. But at the end of the walk out, we realized it doesn't do much still to repair any relations, which is interesting. No, and it's not, you know, the World Cup's do make millions, billions for the countries. But you wouldn't say it led to a massive promotion of Japanese or South Korea football as such. There is, there is a good Japanese and South Korean, domestically, is anyway. They're talented. Some could play as a come across, but no one's sort of watching those leagues. Oh, no, no, no, but internationally, we do a good job. Right. Last thing before we start them, before the football begins, Ireland, you've alluded it to before. Yeah, yeah. Now, go into the World Cup, who is Ireland's best player? Well, I think they'll start saying Kevin Gilbarn, so I do, is it? They are one of those nations. They've got a couple of decent plays, couple of Premier League players, but their talisman was of course, Manchester United captain Roy Keach, who is one of the best players in the world at this point? Yes, yeah. And the grumpy man that you've seen today was the grumpy man you saw about then. He's very much consistent with his character, I think. Yeah, yeah. But he has a four and out, doesn't he? With the island, well, head coach, which is Mick McCarthy at the time. Yeah. But also, just the entire F.A.I. He's not impressed with the standard of the facilities in Cypans, whether, whether sort of based, he kind of thinks a whole thing's a little bit amateur. Yeah. He's really not impressed at all. Yeah. He wants it changed. He's not, he's, you know, very, very open in his criticism. He's an all the sidepan insulin, doesn't it? And it's he's now a film, I like, I can't say I've watched it. I want to see it actually. I've heard, it reads me decent things. I don't think obviously the key players are very happy with how they're portrayed in it, but you never are in the film of yourself, I suppose. Steve Cougan is a big fun experience. Yeah. Yeah. Obviously. Steve Cougan is Mick McCarthy. Can't be any worse, can't it? Yeah, can. Can. And yeah, I wonder if I wonder if McCarthy said that at the time. McCarthy absolutely still despises Roy Kean. He though recently in one of the film promos. He was slightly on my final stage. I think Kean still despises Mick McCarthy. I think there's probably a little bit of both there. But anyway, he goes home and Ireland and without their key man, which is a bit of a blow to them, but it's more just the headlines and causes, isn't it? And there's this famous image of him walking his dog. Yeah. Back home and, you know, knocked with the club. The country has the country going to play the woke up with his skin. Ed looking pretty scary. Yeah. Right. Let's go on to the football then. Opening game. This is a very notable open opening game between Semigal and the Dvenor champions, of course, France. We're all expecting a comfortable French victory. This is a decent French side. However, they are missing their talisman as the Indians are down for this game. He's been injured. A fine dream's kept him out. And it has a massive impact because France lose. Yeah. One nil to a Semigal, Papa Boop a job with the goal kind of scrambles it and stabs it over the line after a really good run from Al Hatchtuth. And as that famous dancer in the corner flag down around the kit, doesn't it? And it starts off this incredible walk up a shocks. Yeah, it does. And it is a massive song. It's a deputy, since, of course, but they were a decent team, Senigal. And lots of these in moves, primarily against other clubs after the World Cup, don't they? Really significant. Lots of them are playing in France at the time too. So it's quite significant for them. A great result. But people like Al Hatcht, Sally, Jal, Papa Boop a job in moves to the Premier League. But this is a great way to start. I mean, it's a dream. The winners of the last tournament. Great. I set the tone for the last tournament. As you've said, I think of the whole of Africa will be celebrating this result. And it does, you know, this is a two-year point in football, of African football, not just being there again to make up the numbers. They are there to compete. And, you know, maybe, you know, it goes far as semi-finals and finals. Who knows? France, though, were pretty gutted by this defeat. Frank LeBurf, famous centre-back, said, "We've run for miles for nothing. For the last 50 minutes, I spent my time only going back and forth. We needed ZZZ to keep the ball. This is a collective and not an individual defeat. So Dan can't be replaced and year is done his best. You can't put the blame on one person." So I think Jorkeye took a bit of the flag, not being able to fill the Dan's boots. Who can fill the Dan's boots? And then what this does, this defeat, is sets up a really poor tournament for France, who have won the Euros in 2000 as well. One of the greatest teams ever assembled. And they finished bottom of the group. Yeah, they draw then to Uroguar Nielsen. They're on a loss and a draw with no goal scored. Going into Denmark being their last game, knowing that they need to do something to try and save their World Cup. And they use two Nielsen to Denmark. So they go home, having scored no goals and achieved just one measly point, incredibly. And Tyronry is sent off in the Uroguar game as well. Does not hit somebody here much on re-getting sent off? Yeah, pretty poor tackle. Yeah, so I have that group progress. Dan Muff and Senegal on debut. Get out in second place.
And they only just do it again because they go through no lap against Uruguay in the last game and then end up drawing it three-three, which could have really ended, you know, negatively if Uruguay had got a fourth goal. But they don't, those two teams, bit of a shock if you looked at that on pay B, probably say if France and Uruguay's go through, but it just outweights out. This is a real couple of really out of shock in people. Group B, bit of a quieter one maybe, Spain Paraguay topping the group ahead of South Africa and Slovenia. Yeah, Paraguay, South Africa draw the key game between each other. So then it comes down to unbelievably goals scored, which is quite an interesting way to separate the group. Gold if you have level, goal scored, Paraguay by the nature of the fact that they beat Slovenia three-one, the South Africa only achieve a one-nil win, it means they progress so Paraguay through. Okay, right, groups C there, and this is a, I remember watching this group quite a bit, I remember seeing these games. So Brazil, Turkey, Costa Rica and China, China of course straight out. I remember that defeat to Brazil. I remember watching your a bit of Carlos's free kick and he thumps it in like a proper special. I mean, listen, look at the goal score isn't that game between Brazil and China. Rebita Carlos, Revaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo. (laughs) It's iconic in it. That's incredible. All beginning with that. What an amazing side. Brazil all speak Turkey. This is, this is Reno, so the first game in the group stage, I remember Turkey, technically, I remember Hassan Sass was a really good, tricky player. You know, like the bald head, you did, I think you did the rainbow flick over someone, it was like, "Wow, no, it's this before." They do lose, Ronaldo, Revaldo, scored goals, so like them out. But this is, Reno, because it has that moment in the second half where the ball is kicked, but, passionately, to a ward Revaldo in the corner flag, who's time-waste him. Hitchor Revaldo on the knee, and he goes down, holding his face, and the guy gets set off. - A colleague moment of the World Cup. - So, I. - No, she don't let me, you naughty. - Ah, Propagons are after. And then he, of course, goes winning goal as well, so it's like a double, double-edged sword there. But yeah, Turkey do go through a bit of a shock again, maybe at times they've taken a second World Cup at this point. So yeah, Turkey go through with Brazil. - Yeah, they beat China three more or less, enough to say, with a goal difference against Costa Rica. - Go to Costa Rica. - Group D's are really good group. Now, this is full of stories. South Korea, USA, Portugal, and Poland. Portugal, Euros, 2007, we finalists, and Luis Figo, of course, you know, go-mairs, so I've just had the sticker off. Really good team, but they are shocked in the first game. They lose to America three, two. - Yeah, that is a huge result from America. - And this is America who are known at times being a bit of a rubbish, useless, fubbler nation or suck nation. But they could three know that, Portugal almost come back, but they hold on, and it really is an amazing result. And I was looking on some old BBC articles from 2002, talking about Senegal win, and if that's the best shock ever in this walk up. And ever's in no, USA's winner, Portugal, is a bigger shock. - It's nuts. There's a compilation of this game on YouTube and with American commentary, and they're just going nuts, when they go three nil out, they're like, "What is this in the bright?" - It's brilliant. It's massive for them, because that result is enough to carry them through in the second place, because they draw with South Korea in the hosts, and they lose to Portland, but by nature of that win, they top Portugal. Unbelievably top of that group is hosts South Korea. Again, not every time we've talked about in previous walk ups, they've come bottom of the group. They've not done anything yet. Here, it's like when they turn up, they beat Portland to nil, they draw with the USA, and then they beat Portugal as well. Hark G-Sold, future United midfielder. - Yeah, yeah. - And they go through and dump out the Portuguese. - And that's a bit of a controversy game. Portugal, fish with nine men. It's the first game in this walk up where we maybe question some of the referee decisions towards the host nation. But they do win it, and partly someone becomes a bit of a massive star, doesn't he, after this walk up, we've seen them in the jogger Benito, Nike Advert, he, all the times we United, PSB then United, has a very, very good career. And even before Son, it was massive as Hark, G-Sold was just as big, wasn't it? - Yeah, Portugal out. Okay, so we're going to Group E. We got Ireland's group, they got Germany, Cameroon and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia. I am going to this game as well, 8 nil, Germany. Miros have closest call three headers for Atric. - Helps him towards his World Cup record, isn't it? - Yeah, definitely. - Yeah, massive result there for Germany. They draw with a Republic of Ireland, which is a really good result for Ireland. They get a really late result in that, too, too. - I'm a watcher now. I'm a very celebrating, Robbie Keane, wasn't it? - Yeah. - And he does his classic celebration, the car wheel and ill. - That's the first time that's seen a celebration. I was thinking I want to watch the highlights of it, just 'cause he's, you know, Robert and Andrew or for me or whoever, Lualla Warr, all those sort of celebrations. They're really classic, they're really good. Is that Keane, is like this bloke who shouldn't be doing car wheels? It's a good little celebration. - That wheel, and they're really good. - And then the old shaking hands. - Yeah, it's great. It was great in the little cup when we first saw it, 'cause everyone was doing it on some playgrounds, even on the concrete in Prague, yeah, here. But then when you saw it, you know, 15 years later, you still doing it in a permanently gave against walls. You're like, "Oh, no." - And there's an iconic blip of him, his first goal for LA Galaxy when he goes there, 'cause we have a trailblazer along with Beck and those. He scores, he does it in the celebration, he's like, "I wish I was a smiling Robbie Keane, "and welcome to Hollywood." He's doing a little setback in his grain. - He works. - Anyways, they save a point there, Ireland. So Jeremy, top of the group, 'cause then they go on and beat Kalaroon, but for Ireland, without Roy Keane, they manage a draw of the first game with Cameroon. They manage that draw against Germany, and then thankfully for them, they have Saudi Arabia, who can clearly bottom the group. Last, a three-neil victory for them, sees them through in second place. So they have a good group. - That Cameroon gave me opening one as well. I remember watching that with my brother, 'cause I think it was about 8.30 in the morning, it was really early in between, can sat at the morning in between the live and kick-in and SMTB live, they put this game on, and then the Matt Holland squad, a really good long ranger to equalize it. - Yeah, core memories, this one, remember, and that was right, Ireland are through with Germany. Then it goes on to definitely a group of death, this one. - Yes. - Sweden, England, Argentina, Nigeria. - Of course, Fennied Swedish as well, of course. - Of course. - Really notable. - Oh, Rika Johnson, of course. Argentina, our favourites to win this World Cup, go into it as well. - Yeah. - Doesn't end that way. They do start well though, with the one that will live in Nigeria. - Yeah, but it's a super scores, and England start with a draw. You don't think that's not great for England, that's not what you want there. Argentina in all positions in the land, I suppose, after the first round of games, Campbell scores a header, doesn't he? - I Sweden, level it at one one. Second group game, this is a game that we saw, I remember this really clearly. David Beckham scores a penalty to be Argentina for him. This is a massive retribution, isn't it? - This is it. This is the redemption art complete. - Yeah. - This is a game, remember watching it, they've been going over to a friend's house to watch it. And it was massive, wasn't it? It was like it, but again, everyone was watching that game, England and that way, just to go. Simione, he gone in percent of it. Beckham has been like mud for some people. He's obviously the man United, Icon, and not many people like Man United. - He's a global icon here. He's a massive, - Yeah. - An Asia's at this point, isn't he? - Yeah. - With the Mohawk as well. - Yeah, yeah, the header to match, he's sort of stature in that way. Clean as the referee. And, yeah, it earns England a humongous victory against Argentina to sort of banish some of the demons from four years that people are going on to. And not just that, 1986, there's a hell. - Yeah, truly so really sizable moment. Sweden win this, and again, for Sweden now, we're on six points at a six. They draw without Argentina too. So Argentina has a really rocky World Cup. And so Sweden ended up top in that group. England draw with Nigeria, had their beaten Nigeria, they would have top the group. And they would have perhaps had a nicer path to the final that would come onto. But they do draw a Jordan Hill, Nile, and they also progress. So Argentina are out. - Do you want to ask the question, David Beckham? - Go on. - I won't do his voice, because about no one else here. - No, that's not the point. - He said, after the World Cup tonight, yeah, I was shaking almost uncontrollably. I was quite like a baby, clinging onto the shoulders of my dad, as if he was a lifeline in a rage and sea, lovely, lovely little metaphor. - Say, lad, - Apparently, it was the worst time of my life. The only World Cup game is massive, but England against Argentina is on another level. I made a mistake, but the reaction was brutal, and then talking about the penalty itself. He said, "I would never get nervous to take the penalties, but I was with this one." There was two or three minutes between the referee giving it and me taking it. And I was pretty intimidating at the end of front of the Argentina fans. I couldn't get my breath at one point. I nearly stopped breathing, dramatic.
In the end, I just drilled it. A lot has gone on in my life, but after four years, I can finally lay it to rest. Lovely goat riding there. But yeah, I mean, he does. In the celebration, it's a bit like your Tardelli's, whoever, you know, he sort of beats his chest and pulls on his shirts and he's so, you can see the relief in there. And it is a massive result, because it means that they progress ahead of Arzuzina. These are the places I ever saw a penalty smashed down the middle as well. Yeah, and celebrate with such vigour isn't it often you sort of just, you know, celebration of the penalty or the less. But yeah, massive huge moment. You do feel for it. John Watson, he's like, you can smash him now about the glasses in the house, wasn't it? How about there's a lot of damage to living room furniture after that moment? Right, next group we've got good G. We've got a Mexico top there group and they do that head on Italy, which is quite an impressive result for them. It is, yeah. I remember the Mexico goal against Italy is to ball gethie header. Yes. Well, it comes over to him. It's got us back to goal. And you think what you're just going to hold it up and kind of like somehow makes his neck moving a crazy way that flicks the ball in past before. And you're like, how was that going to Jaron Boggetti? He's a bit of a star, wasn't he? I like Boggetti. Yeah, I can't tell you who he played for at the time. No, no, he was iconic. Lots of Mexican plays are in the World Cup teams. Yeah, Croatia, sadly for them, they fall out of this group. They obviously got a fantastic run in 1998. Davos, you carry still there, but not as a, that was all concrete as you was in 98. And they be Italy as well. Yeah, they do. And Italy still managed progress because they are able to a playing four points there they get. The picture against Ecuador, who are sort of the Wippenburg something you'll notice in all these groups really there are a team that sometimes dropped off the bottom in this way. Yes. But I do like as we're going through these groups, we're seeing nations perhaps a way not so used to seeing progressing, but I'm certainly topping groups where I talk about shocks in this World Cup. I think that's a great thing. It's great to see different names like we're going to see group H Japan top their group. Hostation again, Japan. Now Japan, this will get better. Cool. I mean, the players have like spiky hair, like red hair and, you know, and all sorts. And he was like, wow, these guys are cool. Japan, we in this group, seven points ahead of Belgium, Russia and Tunisia. So to decent, decent teams are beating there. And instantly you get household names like in a moto, I think you also asked them the catter as well. Great player there. Yeah, really just get a little side that Japan. Yeah, it was and it sets up some really interesting knockout games. But it also possibly sets up some quite nice routes to the final for some of the big nations perhaps. Definitely. By nature of that, you know, he's always great when there's a shock at a World Cup. He's always great when a big side goes out. But in some ways, it harbs the World Cup too because you get a walk over results. Maybe the knockout stages will come on too. Well, what would say is looking back at the goals, Miss World Cup. There are some pretty impressive strikes as well. That fair and over ball is moving, but it's they're doing it well. All the YouTube, you can watch all the dollars. It has a compilation and there are some bats with screamers in it. Right, let's look at the players. We'll come down. We've got some decent, decent squads. I started a group A then Denmark. I mean, we can't look for these players because there are a lot of them are so instantly recognizable now. We do have to very specific with the players you pick out pick a few. So right, Denmark, I think Yondale Thomasson is quite an instantly recognizable name. Yeah, Yondale Thomas, Thomas Grabison, Jasper Grunk, yeah. Liverpool legend Christian Poulson in there as well. Peter Lovencran's, Fuku Marger fans and then the dog in it. The dog. Peter was it Rosen, Peter Rosencran's Lovencran's. That's his name. That's his full name. Is that actually? Yeah, it was in Cran's. There is other players there, but we can't go for more than one hour. Right, France again, excellent squad. Very similar to one night, you got Liz Razoo, Vierre, Jorke, Faka, Lailie, this one, Desai, Jibos, Cise, Youngster, and 20 years old. So, Dan is in it, but he's injured. Will Tord, Henry, Churram, Barthes, Petty, LaBurth, Trazegay, very good. But they go out, which is a massive shot. Yeah, they team that's that good. And then Senegal, where we just picked him in a sticker. Oh, my duff is there, of course. I can tell you now, we played for a show in France. Yeah, they're all in France, and they have the likes of them. So they as we know, we've already mentioned Bocsland, but I'll lose Cise. I'll actually have Sally Churram, both then go to play for Liverpool, and they are on Rikimara. Yeah, Papabuba, Dior, and really iconic names. They made their names of the World Cup. It's a classic story. It's Uruguay, then, not as noticeable as before. Probably the most noticeable is Avara, yeah, Avara, Rikoba, Dintamalan forward, very good pair. Diego Foulan, yeah, no. He scores a bang in goal in the Swag Cup as well. Foulan, yeah, class. Paraguay, we got the famous goalkeeper, Jose Nui-Shilever. How many goals did he, let's have a look at him, he goes he finished with, because he was a proper goal-scoring. So in his career, he's got 46 domestic goals, and he scored eight goals Paraguay, as well. That's not even correct, but he's got three picks in it. Wales Strike. Oh, that's definitely better than Wales Strike. Sounds like Cruz. Rocky's out there. Yeah, it's not that Cruz, of course, he's a proper barclay, he's a mother, as you'd say. Stavine, yeah, not very noticeable. No, no. So a move, we'll pass them. Sam Africa, we've got some decent players. Pretty sure you've won the ball. Yeah, no, he'd play. Aram McQueener. Yes, yeah, Ben and McCarthy, Fradda B, Pina, even Pina, zero caps to his name, Youngster. Obviously, you know, the Barclays men there. Spain, decent team, again, building. Yeah, young Eca Cacias in the ranks. Poyol is there. Pierre is there. Rowl is there. Moyantes. Javi, as a, as a Youngster as well. How old is he there? He's 22, and Fran. Yes, Luisa and Rikki, of course, the manager, Luisa and Rikki, who is that manager of PS3? Yeah, I remember, he's a, a whacking as well. He was brilliant at this. He was like a dynamic winger. And he's, he's going to just stop playing now, isn't he? Cacias, I know it was ball because he wasn't Spain's number one before this walkup. It was Santiago Canazaras, the Lenskeeper, but he dropped the bottle of aftershave on his foot to the wall, the walkup, didn't he? He missed out, which gave Cacias a chance to play. And the rest of this is history. And Cacias came here, arguably, you know, top, top five keepers of all time. Yeah, good, good side, that's Spanish side. Brazil there. Here we go. This is Scalari managed Brazil team. Yes. The likes of Caffin and Lucia and Rocca, Jr. and Ed Mielson, Roberto Carlos and Jabitor Silva are now available in Ronaldinho and Dida and Javiano Beletti and Claverson and Jr. and Ed Mielson. Oh, my word is such a good side. Janinho Luizau and Cacar is there as a 20 year old. Rodrigo Sennius, right? I never go all keeping. Yeah. Ruzco loads of goals. Cacias, yeah, 20 year old Cacar, wow. That's a great team, isn't it? It's a great team. And again, they're of course those people are playing in Europe. But the majority and really are playing in Brazil. So they were, I mean, they are actually in my memory that Brazil side because whilst we talked about perhaps they're not the swagger in Brazil in 1970 or the 82 side, 86 side, they were iconic, definitely iconic players. And that's their last time. They will come onto it. So last time they win the World Cup. So for a good while, they will be a really iconic Brazilian side because we know what 24 years post this and they've not really come close to winning it seems. Yeah, yeah, absolutely right. Even China got some names are recognized. Sunji Hai. Yeah. And like Ty as well. I'm an Everton player. That's my eight though. There you go. Two players for them. I recognize, stay away. Paolo Onechop. Of course, Costa Rica, decent player. Turkey got a few players. They made their names in this World Cup, didn't they? Yeah, Roustie, Rick Bywall, the I Black like. Footballer. Yeah, yeah. Long hair. I had a football head of him. So I've ever remembered him. He's actually more memory. Al Pai. He was dear, he wasn't he? Yeah. Two guy. Muzzy. Is it Emre? Good name. Hakkan Suka. Yeah. Yeah. Well, he was good. By a live cousin player. That's a real fun. That's a sass. Not yet. Not bad. In Mittavala. In Mittavala, it was in Milan player, but he was in the box. He had a really prominent black mobile shady the side like a punk rocker from the clash or something. And he's got a couple goals make as well. Poland's Dudeck was bad. It really isn't it? Not their best squad by by a runway. Portugal though. This is why it's such a shot. They went out. Listen to these players. You've got Louis Figo unreal. He got Pauletta, very good for which Al Pinto, Ruby Costa, Nuno Gomez. They were building with Victor Bia in goals. They're definitely. Apple Xavier. Yeah. Lim Paul, that's you. Yeah. I remember trying to work out. You say Xavier. Yeah. Sergio Conte, Sal. Of course he manages, you know, in Mittavala's portafor. Yeah. Yeah. Not bad team. Salve career then, again, before
for the World Cup, wouldn't have hit any of these players. - No, managed by Gus Hiddink. I mean, we heard of him, he's a great man, isn't he? And this is the best. He's part of the reason they do so well in this World Cup, isn't he? - And there is a few plays playing in other parts of the world, but most of them are based in South Korea, or Japan, and obviously Park is the key man that becomes iconic. - USA, then, we've got. - I like this. - Cloud Jo Rainer, Brad Fredel, we've got Brian McBride, the legend is Landon Donovan, who will end up becoming the young player of the tournament. - Cloud Jo Rainer, Joe Maxson Ball, who'll play for Sunday night. - Marcus Beasley? - Yeah. - Kobe Jones, Casey Keller, Tony Neola. - Love it. - Not bad. Cameroon, we've got Etou, we've got Lauren, we've got Jeremy, we've got Rigabit Song. - You did the info, said he lost his life, of course. - Yeah, Gemma Gemma. - Desairy Job. Not bad, not bad, Tina. - Germany? This is definitely not Germany's best squad, is it? - I thought that. So, when I looked at these German squad, I thought, Ferdinand, obviously, they went the final column to it, but they, this is not anywhere near as iconic of squads that will come later, and it's not as iconic as some of the squads you've seen previously, I would say. Oliver Cahn, the captain in goals for them. Oliver Norieville, Deep Mar, Hamann, closes there as a youngster, layman, not as the main man, Balsalak was amazing, as it is. But beyond that, really, there's a pity. - Yeah, and older, a bit of half the ace. - Yeah, he was like, "Friends, but not as a main man, he'll be able to play more of the role in 2006." So, yeah, it isn't an iconic German, so is it? - Definitely not. The island team is pretty iconic. I think it's not a bad squad, there's a lot of them are playing new players, shake-given, Steve Finnan, Ian Hartz, who got Steve Stortnan, Jason MacCatier, Matt Holland, Damien Daff, Robbie Keane, Kevin Kill Band. That's a, you know what, there's a lot of players, you know, I'd call him. - It's a pretty good, isn't it? It's a decent team. You can see why they qualify. - Yeah, just notable in this scene, of course, Taliesman and Captain. - Yeah, people are there, they were the deaf thing I'll be afraid of in there. Let's move on to Argentina then. What a flop of a team in this world cup. Ayala, Saring, where that really long hair, Potsatino, Walter Samuels, a Nettie, Bata Stuta, or Tegra couldn't make up for his head, but in '98, they're wrong. - Still there. - I'm, I'm, I'm I was an unbelievable player. He was so good. He plays a ball all time for Valencia and he always just tear us apart. Killy Gonzalez, Tilly and Crespo, Kenesia, and it ranges at this point, you see all there. - England then, managed by Sfair, as we said. David Seaman, classic iconic. I want to, well, I'm assuming, Ashley Cole, Travis and Claire, Rio Verde, and Saul David Beck, and I just did so many plays here. Paul Skulls, Michael Lone and Robbie Fowler, Emil Heskey, Nigel Martin, Renew member him, because I had a friend called Martin, and that's why I remember. I'll get to him so much. But Nigel Martin, did I have a friend? - I got Nigel. - Joe Cole, Darious Fassel, David James is there, Keiran Dyer, he said, "Yeah, it's not as good as 2006 squad, but it is still really iconic in team." That had the chance, possibly, to do a bit more than they end up doing. - Yeah, definitely. Nigeria, Juicio Viobo, Babayaro, Kanin, Tilly Bo West, a culture, decent players, but it's a real, not a great tournament from them. Sweden then, Melbourne, Got Anders Fenson, Freddie Lumberg, Alexanderson, Oldback, Larsson, Not bad, and again, not a local player, is that Iberhimmahvitch, a young 20-year-old Iberhimmahvitch in the squad here. - Croatia, as we said, Davosuke is there, but he's 34 years old now, Nico Kovak, a couple of different plays that we'd recognise, bruh. - Was a necky, so that there. - You know, not as good as they scored in '90. - College? - So much, you know, they'll go on to have. - Yeah. - You know, they'll be playing a part in those later Croatian sides that go really far from the World Cup. - It's the knee then, again, great, great squad, loads of players, again, we know, no straightaway, Bufon, Benucci, Mardini, Kanavaros, and Neti, Del Piero, Gertuso, and Zaggy, Tati, Nesta, Delvekio, Tomassi, Zambrata, Vieri, Toldo, Matarazzi. That's a really good squad. They should have done better in this world, up. - Yeah. - Or maybe we'll see why they don't do as well in a minute. We mentioned Mexico's big players in Pagetti already. Marquez, Blanco, iconic players from World Cup's there. - Cam Pox, another goal scoring keeper though. - He's still there, yeah, very well, I don't think he's starting this point there, you know. Then Belgium, definitely not the golden Belgian side or goal in generation of the 2010s. We've got Mark Phil Mutsay, he'll be the manager when Wales beat them at the Euros in 2016. Then I've got Bison. - Japan, we've mentioned Genitzi in a Montau, Arsenal and then goes to play for Canada City. At some point in his career, the cat, Suzuki, not bad, not bad team there. We'll see, don't go really far. Russia, not really many players in team recognizable there. Genitzi, same, right. That, that right? - Yeah, I think so. We've covered as much as we can there. When we get to 2006, we're going to have to think about our US, because then it's every player in that tournament is going to have to be realed off. Because your whole podcast, naming the players one at a time, yeah, the hall of very good, some of them, not necessarily hall of fame players, but very good players, hall of decent. Okay, let's go on to the knockout round, so we have some games that kind of just pass by without much to say really. Too many of you, Paraguay, one no, a real North America clash here, Mexico, USA at the World Cup, two no USA though, death through again, Spain, knockout, Ireland on penalties, heartbreak for Ireland there, they missed three pens and a shootout, Cassias on form. Denmark are beating Comtiv England's, England often do things the hard way, especially in knockout rounds, but this time, smash them, all three goals in the first half, you got pesky and Owen Scorn, and apparently real third-nan scores the first goal, but it's definitely an own goal. He heads back, back, because of what he's got on it, kind of rolls in, it's been given to him. - You've been credited with it though. - In the lips of it to this day. Brazil comes to be beat, Belgium, 2-0, Japan go out host to Turkey. The two games are going to talk about that when these last six games, we've got South Korea Italy's the first one. This is going to be one of those controversial games in World Cup history, especially if you're Italian. - Yeah. - Start of the game. The Korean fans are in, incredible numbers, supporting their nation at levels, not seeing their many more cuts before. Before Tournament, their tour of gamers is massive red wall of Korean supporters, and they have directly, really clearly the words again, 66, bring about memories of the North Korean victory of Italy, at the 1960s, World Cup, which we have talked about, it's one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history. Now South Korea, they're trying to claim North Korea's win there for themselves. - Yeah. - Which, you know, maybe trying that reunification rhetoric, it does make a real cold during, like atmosphere, - Yeah, yeah. - For the Italian players to come out into. It's usually took due to the lead though, Christian Biaires was against, 'cause quite a few in World Cup, and you think it's all going their way until the eighteenth minute, when South Korea equalized, which is a bit of a shock, a bit of a get to run a play. South Korea had Mr. Palley in the first half as well, they're ticked again to extra time, and that means golden goal as well. Long story short, South Korea win it with a golden goal. Is it Arnyom Kwan? Is it the winning goal? Is it Kehede, whose passport-fun golden goal ends it there? Do you think of, wow, what a shock. This incredible talent, you knock that out of the hosts. This is kind of what the organizers would like. A host nation go afar, pulling off an incredible shock. - Yeah. But it's not that simple. This game is controversial. Some of the decisions we need to watch it back are questionable, to say the least. - Yeah. - First major one is Tottie is sent off for a second year half a dive in. Now, a talent in place at this time, did I have a reputation going down quite easily, and then rolling around in the floor, like, you know, one, two, three, four, five, and doing all the kind of crowd-round referees. But it's a clear penalty. He is completely wiped out. It's like sub-obvious. Tottie goes down, ref comes over, yellow card, red card, he's off. And it's like, whoa, Drafta-y, Marino, not the most fit of referees to be nice. He miles away from that. He's about 30 yards away when he gets taken out. So he can't. He says, "Drafta-y" And then he then denies to musty the winning goal in extra time, the golden goal, when he's on-site. And it's given us off. I mean, that's more of a line to me, not, I suppose. But, yeah, he just allows the goal. It's the then, obviously, let the goal in and go out. And it is this massive thing in Italy that the supporters, and it will have to do, man. Trappers,
Tony, who's the manager, Bittily says, it was obviously from the start, which way the wind was blowing. The World Cup started like this for us and kept on in the same direction because other decisions in previous games, you can't against them as well. Inability and lower tension in the end is caused as a disaster like this. You can't play a World Cup with incompetent linesmen. I've never experienced such a negative moment in my career. We go out with a head held high with a lot of recommendations. If you talk about who should have won, I would say it should be Italy. Get it done in all time then. And the end of the very good point. The guy who scores the winning goal and young Kwan is playing it at a time for Peruzia and he gets sacked by Peruzia straight after the World Cup or during the World Cup. He gets his contract divided by the club. That's funny. The owner of Peruzia who makes a decision, Luciano Gouchi, denies it says he scored the winning goal. No, it's not because he scored the winning goal. He's basically because he's saying that Anion Kwan is slid off Italy and that's why he's been sacked because he's denser than that is damaging to the reputation and the history of Italy. He says, I have no intention of paying a salary to someone who was ruined Italian soccer. I think all he says is South Korea is better than Italy football. Yeah, and get out. So get sacked and FIFA let it happen. Yeah, I think he's awarded to pay compensation or something like that to Peruzia as well. It's shocking. Yeah, it's nuts. That surely gets all kind of employment law. Yeah. And I think that ends his career in Europe as well. He's basically back to the J-league in Japan after that. The Air The Noters for Game is Sweden and Senegal, another game of the Golden Gold. This time it's Senegal who scored it on Ricamara in actual time. But this game is noticeable for Golden Gold. Now this is something that was brought in by FIFA in the mid 90s. It's not going to plan. It had very little impact on them. They brought in to change football to make actual time entertaining. They didn't want football to be gripped by negative tactics. And I'll often next time people would just play for penalties. If all we had this Golden Gold and everyone will try and score it. It didn't work that way with the opposite way. Most teams just offended for their lives instead. They didn't want to do any risk heater, lose extra time losing to Golden Gold. We'd seen it in a few times in year 2000 with David Trezzegase winning gold against Italy for France. We've seen it in 2001. If you could find a Liverpool won that from an own goal from an Alivez player. But it's on the way. This walkup gives it a bit of a lifeline against. We've just seen it have a career in it. And in this game goes against the grey. I'm both size, Sweden and Senegal. I just go for it. How full of it all actual time. One to that golden goal. And it does come from Senegal. No teams go closing. The Woodrow Exit as well. It does have this positive like, oh, maybe Golden Gold can work for them. I'll let you see. It goes by 2004. So Senegal, incredibly earns the quarterfinals as well. What a walkup for them. Well, yeah, on debut, that is an incredible story for them. And you're right. That's exactly what Golden Gold was supposed to bring. It's just sad that this is something in the occasion where it happens. That's gone to quarterfinals. A lot of action here. Let's go on to the first one. In the versus Brazil. How do you remember this game? What happened? What's your core memory of watching this match? Every single Brit on a similar age to ourselves will have this same memory. 8, 13, a minute in the morning. The school hall in primary school was opened. The game was projected onto the screen projected as fancy. Yeah. I'm sure we had the small screen. Well, we thought was bigger than time. It was the memory anyway. Yeah, you can reveal the screen. Yeah. But either way, the game is being shown. Little kids all sat around watching it cheering on England by their evening Wales, because that's what you did. Not now, but might sound a chance to me. I was. And my color in giving me the lead celebrations, the nearium joy, get a little bit toast, probably at the same time. Great stuff. This is what you want from a while. It was Tuesday morning. Then reviled those courses for half time. Got it. Not ideal for England. No idea. Worst times in a go. And then this really, really iconic goal, of course, Ronaldinho, who was cool. Like we've said, plenty of times on various podcasts and videos we've done. One of our favourite plays of all time. Not, you know, the handsome chap of, I don't know, some like David Beckham, but incredibly talented and incredibly joyous to watch. He has a free kick from 40 yards, 25 yards. Yeah, 40 yards from an angle, a really tight angle. Some say it's shot come cross or cross come shot. I think it was, I think it was a shot. I think he aims for it. I do now, yeah, over time, I changed my opinion on it. He sees David Simon off his line and he smashes the free kick into again, sort of posted stump territory. He's perfect. I mean, I've ended up, he was calling it like a falling leaf David Seam. And that's silly what you hear at the time, because he was sort of like a falling leaf, trying to get back to it. Scream. Yeah. With his ponytail. Yeah. And looks like that. I'm looking back into it as it goes over his head. And he decided half times of 45 minutes, rather scores, 50 minutes, Ronaldinho scores. They turn the game on his head. Then Ronaldinho sent off, which is more drama. But it's not enough. Louis Filippo Scullari and his side march through and they beat England and a lot of very sad school children across the British Isle ready for a day of learning. It's been to be picked up to go and do some maths or whatever it may be. It was, yeah, that was a crazy moment that game. I remember the first Owen got, I'm eating my breakfast at home, listening to on the radio. Right. Owen scored, then getting in the car and then the car had the radio on in Ravaldo score, then getting to school for a second half. And then Ronaldinho scored it back then. It was like, when you're a kid and that kind of goal goes in, you think it's a fluke at the time. It's like real injustice. This isn't fair. You can't score that way. It's not fair to score that. And Ronaldinho wasn't the name like Ronaldo or Ravaldo going into school. He was relatively unknown to a lot of people compared to some of the bigger names, but he emerged and was told him and as the future best player in the world. We did a podcast on him, I remember me. How good was it? All about Ronaldinho. So check that out. If you ever listen to it. Here's one quotes, then. Do you want to hear what Ronaldinho says about the goal? Yes. When we play England, I get asked if I meant that goal in 2002. I knew David Seedman came off his line quite a lot. And I knew if I put the ball where I did, that could cause him problems. So I meant it. It was not luck. Well, from Ronaldinho, I believe him. And he, David Seedman was loved quite a few times. His career. Yeah. And he wasn't the most athletic of goalkeepers. He does do that save though. In fact, yes. Yeah. Yeah. That last bit of athleticism in him. Yeah. To stop Paul Pesca Solado knocking our slightly after he got up. But England were out with David progress. Yeah. And David Seedman takes this quite personally. Naturally, before he's down to the nice career. I'd show tea. Yeah. I'd like to show him. Straying on action said that he looked a broken man afterwards. I've talked to him in the dressing room or he said, try to. It was difficult. I don't think he listens to me very much. I've tried again, but we got back to the hotel. I told him, if you go on thinking about my goal, you'll break yourself down. You must stop it. It is over. You saved us in Germany. You saved us many games here should not think about it anymore. But I bet he did. Oh, yeah. He did. He's a better guy. He's got to have two more years after the thing. He doesn't know. So then it's towards the end. Yeah. It is right there. Then Germany knock out USA. Controversial in this because Tring, one of the players for Germany, there's a really obvious handball on the line to stop. Eddie Pope scoring for USA. He should be sent off. It should be penalty. Not given Germany go through via Michael Balak. They're kind of outplayed by USA in this game. But an Oliver Kan must to class keeps him out. Milsonas will go up. Oliver Kan has a ridiculously good torment, which leads to him becoming the only goalkeeper ever to win a Golden Ball. Yeah, etched in my memory Oliver Kan again. He was obviously good to him on the goal. But in my head, I think at the time, he was like, like a noir now, like a bootfall. I think you see, he was never quite as that level. He was good. But I remember he was one of the best goalkeepers of the world ever. Scary man. Scary man. Yeah. Really, really classic goalkeeper. I feel like Jens Leibman to follow him as well. That unique brand of goalkeeper, he does have a heck of a tournament. Germany will not exactly impress through the knockout stage. They win 1-0, 1-0, 1-0. So they just do it. The intro of the line is, yeah. And I really said they've not got as good as size as previous ones. But even so, the Germans just do it in the World Cup. They know it. Yeah. I know a lead to a kind of a real crisis in Germany after this World Cup, because they do really poor in the next year, as well, and it's like going to the 2006 World Cup, you know, I'll do your thing. I'm going to go out. I think I'm going to embarrass myself at home as well. It's has to career then. Go through to semi-finals.
So now they're crazy run. Yeah. Another really dodgy win though for some people in there been over Spain. Spain think of two goals as allowed and fairly for up which shouldn't have been as allowed. All the lead end up to a penalty shootout which South Korea win on home soil. Again, very similar to the Italy win. Spain are pretty unhappy with the way it ends up for them. Yeah, even Helgaire squares up to the Egyptian referee after the games they would be robbed and two good goals ruled out. You watch it back and you say it's probably got a point. Perhaps person and then we were talking in a varie where people despise it. I have always been on the side of either on the habit or not because what you do do is correct things that are outrageous that should never have been denied or were really obviously missed. And certainly this will cap is the one that you could put forward for arguments or say perhaps the referees need a little bit of help here. Definitely. Right. Then pretty straightforward. Turkey go through being Senegal Vioe another golden goal. Echan scores the winning goal for them to Senegal's dreamer is over but incredibly we've got semi finals with Brazil and Germany. Yeah, expected. And Turkey is South Korea. Definitely not expect. What if called that? You never ever ever would have called that. Pretty iconic. Probably maybe unfortunate for those two nations it works out that Brazil, Turkey and June, South Korea and it goes according to the script. Brazil win via a Ronaldo Topo. Ronaldo's growing to his torment is neat. The hair is there. He is scoring lots of goalings. He's got six now up to the final. He is really sitting and still out as I'm back. I'm back to win the World Cup baby. Get the business done. Yeah, so did Germany get the business done. One did again. They beat South Korea and it sets up a World Cup final. I certainly remember being excited about Germany versus Brazil. I very much in the Brazilian corner. Oh, I think I think everyone was. Well, actually going to controversy first. Before we start that. So there's quite a bit in this World Cup. Referee. Now you've mentioned a million previous podcasts that there's often target decisions in your cuts favoring the hosts. But do you think it's this one that really brings that to a head in the most obvious light? Lots of mistakes. It's the game, the Spain game itself of Korea, the most noticeable. There are other mistakes throughout the tournament that do leave this World Cup legacy a little bit chakkin in terms of controversy and in terms of ad referee in. By Romero, who is the referee who to, you know, disallow as the goals for Italy, this is probably where it comes along. So if you go onto the computer base, this is what says how it describes him. By Romero is an Ecuadorian form of football referee and convicted drug trafficker who served in the fifth World Cup as an in-sass referee. There you go. So I think is he looks like a drug dealer more than a referee as well. He does. So straight after World Cup, he was seeking election for the Keto City Council, but he doesn't get it because he's suspended from the football authorities in Ecuador for 20 matches for timekeeping errors. So he's already got a bit of dodging us after the World Cup. And then in 2010, he's arrested in New York for trying to smuggle six kilograms of heroin in his underwear. He goes to prison in Ecuador. He serves two and a half years in prison. He's released though after 26 months. What does it go, Greg? So that doesn't help the image and the questions around the legitimacy of the South Korean victory and make you think, yeah, maybe there was. And they didn't, FIFA did have to investigate him for his referee afterwards. So yeah, doesn't do much so. - No, and it is one of those things that happens in World Cup's referee and because you're bringing together more than 32, about minimum of 32 referees of all sorts of nations, all sorts of backgrounds and football styles. And it is always something you see because if you watch the Champions League, there's been on recently, you see totally different things being allowed, let go, encourage in certain countries. It happens, but this is notable as some really important to space a referee, isn't it? - Okay, we've also got the, we're at Ronaldo Dive as congeverse for play acting, which I think really did hit a massive peak around this time, didn't it play acting, diving and cheating. And then the time of the matches for the rest of the world, and I think a lot of the World Cup is forgotten about for the reason of we didn't see it happening at happen live because it was happening in most of Europe in the early morning, do you know, games think it's half eight, 10, 11 or 12. So if you're in work, you missed the games, if you're in school, you missed all the games. It wasn't like you could even watch the game at the end of your school day. - I'm catch up, whatever, it didn't exist. - You didn't have catch up. So you missed it. And I think lots of those key moments just didn't watch it live. And I think it does have an impact on the legacy of this World Cup. - Yeah, definitely. It is just, by nature of it being a World Cup, it's gonna happen, isn't it? It's gonna happen. Similarly with people being in bed for the 26 World Cup and missing some possibly key moments. Now we've obviously got far easier way of catching up on the legs and watching them as live and things like that. But it was simply about then, unless you set your TV to record the whole day and then I think to fast forward on a VHS player trying to find the right moment. You know, of course you're gonna see less of this. And so a lot of the memories are watching highlights. - Take it a little. - Yeah, just take it, I watch it later. - Yeah, right, you guys are the final? - Well, third place player first, let's mention that. Not a bad game, the fastest goalkeeper, I'm sure you wasn't. - Yeah, fast goalkeeper, the commentary is going, South Korea's for South Korea, Turkey, both obviously, like the underdogs and now they're playing each other. You know, and they kick off and it's like a South Korea to give there like a thank you to their fans and then within a leg that's back. - Oh, I got it. - And they closed down the centre back and Turkey take the lead through Hakan's who care. - 11 seconds, isn't it? - 11 seconds and that is not the difference. There's a three to game actually, 'cause South Korea score after nine minutes. - Yeah, good little game. - Three kickers out. - Yeah, I then Turkey win three to, but it's a nice thing to play off that 'cause it probably really means something for both South Korea and Turkey. - And it's normally a bit of a dead rubber, isn't it? - It's rather famous scenes in the game and all the players are like a Turkish player, South Korean, South Korean, all gunning, and in hand, celebrating as well. To joyous scene, thank you to the hosts. And the final is pretty rubbish race. It's a really rubbish game. It's nearly the first half and then Brazil do win it and it is because of Batman Ronaldo, who of course, 98, we discussed it. He has the convulsions. - Yep. - He is in his himself. He's out the team. He's in the team's out. He's in. He is in himself in the final as a bit of a stinker, understandably. The whole mystery that surrounds him, he then gets injured really badly, he's been to Milan. - Yeah. - I hope they say the physio, the doctor, the doctor of physio, tends to him says, "Is the worst injury you've ever seen?" Is like his knees, like exploded kind of thing. It looks like this created by Riobeer. He comes back. He's slightly bigger than he was when he, he got injured, but he has shown the world just what a fantastic player he still is. He's a galacto now. He is scored eight goals in his work. She says two in the final to win the World Cup for Brazil. - It's a massive redemption story. Much like the Beckham one, but obviously on a grander scale, putting it into context. He hadn't played any Serie A against the season before and then he totally played 10 Serie A games before the World Cup. Really two seasons, he played 10 league matches. - Bit of a power of russ, isn't it? - Yeah, in five years in Inter Milan, he only plays 68 times for them, so it's not very much, for example. It is amazing how he recovers his career at Real Madrid 'cause he moves on. Yeah, sort of a year or two removed from the injury on the back of the World Cup and storms as I'd like to go out Real Madrid. But it is absolutely his World Cup. And again, in terms of etched memories, he is someone who is there for me. I don't remember him being the old Dominion. One of the best goal scores of all time as some people would say remember the 90s saying there was no Remitement Al, though. I don't remember him that way, but I certainly remember him in that World Cup, being iconic, wanting to be in, wanted to go out and play. - Yeah, all that sort of stuff. And that is exactly what I did straight after the game and my dad broke his ankle straight after the game. Trying to recreate it was a. - Trying to recreate it. I was doing, come on Dad, you've got to play this seriously as well. We've got to take you side, you know, your gym, you know, in Brazil. And he did his own clubs, the guards, and then broke his own clubs. I mean, when was the final shape? I don't know, eight a.m. They made many suddenly later, midday, something like that. And then by about three o'clock he spoke his own. - You're an A&E, sort of an amount. - Yeah. - And then he had a big football again. - Yeah, yeah. You know, he told me,
that story really doesn't, uh, didn't look well again. But I mean, it is a classic Brazil side for us, not like we've said, as we've done this, not of an all-time Brazilian team. On paper, it could be. Yeah, they just, they don't play out my football. No. Um, right. And also the, the first goal for Brazil is for a mistake by Khan, yeah, who spills a shot into Ronaldo's path. And Khan's been the best player at torment. And it, you know, it's a terrible legacy. He says, he said it was the worst mistake he'd ever made. There's no way I can make myself feel any better or make my mistake go away. So, I certainly shame for him is actually good torment that it is his mistake that leads to Jimmy's coming. Germany weren't going to be not final. They've been pretty, pretty poor. But they somehow made it all the way and took Brazil to the 60th, 70th minute or something in the first goal. So yeah, Brazil will want it though. And his name is image of Kaffee with a right to the all over his top is an air holding the wall cup up on that podium. It's a great, great trophy left. Yeah, it is. And it is a massive moment for Brazil. It's their fifth World Cup. They are back on top of the stage again. Obviously, what did 94? But for any Brazilians watching football today, it is the last time we won the World Cup and everything is always trying to live up to now, not trying to be 1970, not trying to be, I don't know, even 1994, is trying to be that 2002, so wanting to be that 2002. And they're not. And also, I like that this was referred by Collina to who is possibly the scariest rep. Also the best ever, most iconic, most poppies, those are the really iconic referee to him. So yeah, it is really special this World Cup for us as Yomster's remembering it. I think when we think back and remember it. Okay, Charlie Garnes, while ratings of this World Cup. Let's do it. Okay, right. Let's wait the hosts, Japan and South Korea. They spend a lot of money, right? I think you can't knock it. They've got good facilities, timings, not great for you of P&I's, but obviously, I don't know if they're on their own time zone. And there's possibly the question marks towards referee, but there's nothing to implicate sort of them in that. It's just the way it goes. It's futuristic. The mascot's rubbish. Seven, seven, half, what's working? Let's go seven. Okay, what about the players? Good, good group. Very good. I mean, I just reading through those players we got in the stick out earlier. I mean, who could forget Arif Erdem and Francisco Javier Arca? I think there's some missing quality because some of the nations are not there. I think we said the German side, aren't as strong as they could have been. The Brazilians are on paper with quality, but aren't like Connick or some of them. England will see a stronger England into the Danny Mills in this world club. Yeah. Karat Sifke, of course. Yeah, it's not the strongest. The biggest game is not yet. No, and it's not as good to us as six. Seven, point five. No, I think so. Seven. Seven. Okay. What about the matches? Decent games here. Some decent games, but a lot of one-nils. Yeah. I like a shock, so that's good to see the shocks there. Obviously, a couple of iconic, yeah, that's through those games, but it's not again. It's not full of like all that match. Watch that match from 2002. No, no, no, no. No, no, no. So it may be just another seven. Yeah. Yeah. Six point five. Maybe so. If I've had these titles, the corners, right? Yeah, it is. It's a full fun. Iconic moments. That's everything. The Senegal winner for France, that's iconic. Back in the time, the back in the time, the Rwandan Yolab. Yes. The golden goals of South Korea to the game is pretty iconic. Lessed by the fact that you're not all seen them like. Probably keen celebration. Yeah. I think I think not by seven. I think seven again. There's nothing, you know, compared to a hand of God incident. There's a lot of that. Of course. You can't. Yeah. Okay. I mean, that is the ten. That's why that's why. Okay. Right. What about the controversy? There's all down to the referee and questions here. I think there's a decent amount of this one. And down to the referee and questions. There always is, but more so. There's obviously the side pan incident for public. Yeah. Yeah. Revaldo. Yeah. A little bit of cheating and diving that carries on to 2006. And that continues to be headline. But again, nothing stand out in terms of this use talked about for years to come. No. Seven. Seven. Possibly less actually. No, it's going to be higher. The sub-career game is so so dodgy. Seven. Seven. Seven. Seven. Seven. Ten. five. Give us an average of seven. No, seven point five. Okay. It is definitely has to be right. And the legacy. It's tricky because for us, it's our first proper world cup. So we're always going to say. Well, the legacy on that side is the legacy out of me with life changing. But easy. I mean, from Brazil, it's their fifth world cup in the room. Actually, we're not in a lot of time. Yeah. Most ever. You know, the only nation to do it. It's going to possibly impact on Asian international football. Definitely. Because after each pan are always now there, they're about decent and world cups. Just African football positive. Selling out the shop gets friends. It's going to go legacy for shops in the world cup and making you not know that. World Cup's largest cut and dry thing. There is still room for shocks in this new footballing game in the 2000s. Yeah. There's not a lot of the last legacy necessarily that carries into. I mean, the players get moves on the back of it as well. Yeah. And then they walk for them. Seven and a half. Seven. Seven. Seven. Seven. Overall rating then. I remember that. Seven. The average has come out of seven. Is it an injury to walk up? Once you're making this I remember it. I finally remembered it. It was it's a good it's a good tournament. It's undoubtedly a good tournament. I wouldn't hear anyone say it was a terrible tournament. But it was it's hard to remember it when you did struggle to see games life. Of course, anyone who worked or you went to school, which is most of the population struggle to see those games. Yeah. You know, we will have a different view of tricky times in this time around where you will literally be able to catch up and watch the games live as life this time around. It didn't exist by then. It was simply the way it goes. However, it was really important for a couple of nations. Like we said, so I think, you know, I think he's probably for them. They would not say underrated. For us, we didn't say underrated. But but ready for any. Probably ready for any. Setting up the next Great Ball Cup 2006, which is I think this is one of my favorites. Maybe because we were 13 at the time. Yeah. That core part of your life. When you're football consciousness reaches like peak obsession levels, obsession levels, right? I mean, still doing it now. Almost 33. Um, rights. Is everything? I think so. Yeah. What a fun journey we're having through the World Cup. So we've only got five of these together. Yeah. Crazy.
