That Football Show 7/17: Stop Pretending Josh Allen Is Better Than Patrick Mahomes

This episode of That Football Show, hosted by Tucker Frenzel and Matt Vurman on KC Sports Network, centers on a passionate defense of Patrick Mahomes against the growing narrative that Josh Allen is the NFL's best quarterback. The hosts open by noting the flood of social media debate in July and argue that Mahomes, despite winning three Super Bowls, gets worse public relations than any comparable quarterback. They highlight a striking statistic showing Mahomes converted 13 consecutive playoff drives when trailing by one score, calling it unprecedented clutch performance. The conversation turns to Colin Cowherd's controversial claim that he would take Bo Nix over Lamar Jackson in a late-game situation, which the hosts ridicule as indefensible. They argue Allen benefits from immense grace while Lamar Jackson, a two-time MVP, is unfairly criticized, and they suggest race plays a role in whose mistakes get excused. A basketball analogy compares Allen to Donovan Mitchell—exciting but not ultimately a winner—versus Mahomes as the proven closer. The show also covers Jeremy Fowler's positional rankings, including Nick Bolton's top-10 linebacker status and the Chiefs' strong representation, and questions votes for players like Daniel Jones and J.J. McCarthy. The Bozos of the Week segment features a listener's son who smashed a controller after winning a FIFA match, along with criticism of Sean Payton's reported Belichick plan and the NFL Top 100 list.

Speaker 2The best part is, if the Chiefs end up being good this year, and they play the Bills again in the playoffs, the funniest possible thing could happen.
Speaker 3Coming up, the latest episode of That Football Show, here on KC Sports Network. It's That Football Show here on KC. KC Sports Network, Tucker Frenzel, hanging out with Matt Vurman for your Friday edition of That Football Show. Thank you to our partners, Bid Holiday, Bottled and Bond Bourbon, and Holiday Distillery, for making this program possible. It's a Friday, we're leading you off into the weekend. Matt, how you doing?
Speaker 2I'm doing better than quite a few people in Western New York, based on my Twitter timeline. And then also doing better than Colin Calvert, who probably is actually doing better than me, because the man probably woke up with this bang. I can't want to start laughing. Sure, yeah. But also has to live with the take that he put out this week about Lamar Jackson and Bo Nix, which we can get into. That, I actually like Colin a decent amount of the time. Yeah. That was a face-melting take. That's as good as his take is when he picked Drew Locke to win MVP, like five years ago. Yeah, yeah. Which we know how that, I get it, Mizzou legend. Right, 100%. Hall of Fame, actually. He's going into the Mizzou Hall of Fame this year. Which is good. Because he's not going to the pro football Hall of Fame. Probably not. But yeah, listen, I'm doing better than everybody out there. I have very rarely opened up my Twitter feed and just had like 90 notifications in July. If it's not something horrendous that I did, which thank God I haven't done yet. But then like, I'll open it up again, literally 20 minutes later and have 90 more. Yeah. And it's just a deluge of just comments, likes, retweets. I mean, I guess it's good for the algorithm. But I can honestly say I've never done anything for an algorithm. I guess I just, my personality leans into algorithms. And I've hit a real main vein. And it's been, I got to tell you, I've sincerely enjoyed it.
Speaker 3Well, the thing about like algorithm posting and everything like that is, at least for my learning, is that you're not necessarily supposed to appeal to the algorithm. You're supposed to let the algorithm know who you are. And so they can recommend. I mean, due to the right places. That's at least the thought process behind it. That's doesn't, that's not what happens. That's not what happens at all. But that's like the thought process that leaves behind it. But yeah, I've seen you fighting the good fight on Twitter, mainly. I'm sure you're doing it other places too. But on Twitter, you've been fighting that good fight for the, for Patrick Mahomes' name.
Speaker 2Twitter, radio, it's been good. I'm sure TV is not far behind. Look, we talked about this on Monday, so I won't sit here and go too far into it. But although we kind of like preemptively discussed this on Monday, because we're like, well, we know this bullshit's coming. And then sure enough, Tuesday morning, here it is.
Speaker 3We called it like strangely enough, because we recorded that Sunday night. Yeah. And then we were just like, yeah, it's going to happen. And we already were just kind of preparing ourselves. And it was right to prepare ourselves. We were kind of smart in that way.
Speaker 2If you're a Chiefs fan, and if you're watching this, you probably are. There's probably a bunch of, there's probably a handful of like Bills fans hate watching this, which to all of you, I would. I would say, look, I mean, you're probably, I mean, welcome. But also like, if you get bored of this, it just, you know, listen, I don't blame you if you go on YouTube and you search Josh Allen Super Bowl highlights, and it might be disappointing. The thing that has been the most perplexing about this is it's been fun to watch the, how can I word this? Have you ever watched the Discovery Channel when you were a kid? Or Animal Planet? And it would be like, like a lion, like offending off like a pack of hyenas. And then, you know, like in the next scene, it would be like, whatever. I don't even know what it would be like. Six, six cheetahs taking down like a water buffalo. And it was like this pack mentality, right? Like that's how the animal kingdom works. That's how Twitter works. It's this weird pack. It's like where humans become a pack mentality. And so you have the, the Bills fans fighting a two front war with the Mahomes stuff. And then also like punching down at the Lamar stuff. And it's a fascinating, if you had to do it like as a TV show, it would be fascinating because on one hand you have this argument of, listen, the playoffs are a small sample size. Yeah. The regular season is all that really matters. And yeah, the playoffs are there, but look at the total touchdowns and look at this and look at this and look at that. And then the Lamar fans certainly are hoping to talk about the regular season more than the post season. And they're like, but wait a minute. Our guy is significantly more accomplished in the regular season than your guy is. And Bill's fans are like, that doesn't matter. January LOL. Which from my position, defending Mahomes in this case as the best quarterback in the sports, like, yes, you're both bozos. Like you can't sit there and be as a Bill's fan, be like, it doesn't matter that Josh Allen has had some bad moments in the playoffs. He's still the best. And then say, well, Lamar Jackson, who's won two MVPs. Allen's won one. Who's a three time first team all pro. Allen's never been one. Hey, you don't matter because you're only about the regular season. I'll look at our guy. And then you get that weird take, or it's like, well, he's never had help. Yeah. He's never had a, or he's always been let down in the playoffs by his team. And that's been the one I've gotten the most on Thursday. So that I would say, have you watched the chiefs playoff game? Yeah. Did you see MBS? Just forget which direction he was running in overtime or a 24. Like it's, it's all insane. And somehow pales in comparison to Colin Cowherd being like, let me tell you, something bone Knicks over Lamar Jackson, all that like, buddy, I get your friends with Sean Pate. I get it. Holy crap. Like if, if the Broncos got a phone call from Eric, the cost. And he was like, listen, Lamar for Bo straight up. I don't know if Sean Payton would say yes. Cause he might've had a heart attack from the excitement about the opportunity to say yes. Correct. Like that. Look, man, I'm not always the biggest Lamar guy in the world. Cause I'm obviously like I'm big on the playoffs and like, it hasn't gone. My God, man. Yeah. You'd rather have bone next in a Lamar. You want to think Bryce young too, while you're at it? Like that is, that is shame. And yet here we are walking through the middle of July.
Speaker 3I think it's very interesting when you talk about this conversation, especially when you talk about just quarterbacks in general. And you know, a lot of times around players, you talk about it. You use, you call it PR, right? Like which, which players have the best PR. Josh Allen has incredibly good PR. I think really to an extent, I think Lamar has some pretty good PR certain to turn on him a little bit, but Patrick Mahomes might have the worst PR of any quarterback that has won three Superbowls. People just conveniently forget that fact too, that he's won three Superbowls. And I saw, I think in one of the responses you had of just like, Oh, well he won a Superbowl three years ago. Just like, okay, well, when was the last time Josh, Allen won one. And that's, that's kind of the thought that, that is so baffling to me of, of just the PR behind Patrick Mahomes is crazy because I saw this tweet from Barry, you know,
Speaker 2I know you're, this is an actually shocking tweet, even if you're a ballers fan.
Speaker 3Yes. Barry at Barry on here tweeted, Patrick Mahomes has had 14 drives in the fourth quarter or overtime of the playoffs where his team was trailing by one to eight points. That's one possession. He erased the deficit on, 13 out of 14 of them, including the final 13 in a row. That means the first time that he had the ball down 14 to 17 against the new England Patriots in the 2018 AFC championship game, it led to a punt, but he got the ball back in that game and led them to a touchdown and led them back into overtime and led them to
Speaker 2a field goal to tie the game at the end of the half. Correct. Yeah, correct.
Speaker 3He, it is something that is not done by, by quarterbacks literally ever. That's a 92.9% completion percentage on just like you get the ball and you are going to score when it matters. I don't know. Oh man. Maybe you've figured out with like trying to talk to all these people, but where, where have we gotten away from this? Where have we gotten away from just like this guy is good when it matters. So he's the best quarterback. People are like, well, the stats aren't there for Patrick Mahomes. It's like, yeah, but he's won Superbowls and he's actually played. well in big games. games like that's the part that is so confusing to
Speaker 2me so the last time we talked about all these quarterback things we were talking on monday and i i just slandered james harden aggressively for about five minutes for no good reason yeah well donovan mitchell's about to get that smoke okay because i actually thought about this and i was like how would this be in another sport what would be comparative to this donovan mitchell is one of the best scorers of his era okay he was traded for a boatload when he went to cleveland he has been a very good player all nba level player okay he's been one of the best i don't know what would be fair 20 best players in the sport maybe even top 15 i think yeah definitely sure right so this past season the one that just ended donovan mitchell all nba second team all-star top 10 mbp voting 27.9 points per game okay the player i'm about to compare him to scored 26 points per game the most of his career in fact i believe all but maybe two of two of the seasons donovan mitchell has outscored jaylen bronson he's outscored him you could sit there and absolutely say well hey i mean donovan mitchell look he's three-time all-nba and so is brunson but donovan mitchell's a seven-time all-star brunson's gone to three yes that is true and yet i watch basketball who would you rather have on you like if somebody says you look man you got to win a series who do you want good fucking luck finding me the guy who's like excuse me i'll take donovan mitchell on this spot but like that's kind of what we're doing here we're getting into this weirdo area of like alan doesn't have the accolades he doesn't win in the big spot like mahomes does he has not really ever been super clutch like i'm not saying he's never had good playoff games but he's never had the like defining moment of his career you go oh my god look at the way he played that game that's never happened like literally never happened and yet i think because it's boring to just say well yeah mahomes is the best quarterback in the league like what if you like people have and should be now for almost a decade it's boring so i don't want to say where is alan is the sexier pick it's more exciting it's more fun and i feel like that is true in other sports like if if there was social media back in the day we would have gotten a whole lot of penny hardaway's better than michael jordan for about a year and a half big penny over here yeah love penny man was an mj i watched bullet phone like we would have gotten a whole lot of that right or like back and they go drexler's better than nj no he's not he's great because there's i think just the boredom factor is the thing that just makes people go well yeah yeah but like like you to your point on monday's show it's like well josh if people would say about how he doesn't have enough help no one says it about mahomes because he doesn't need very much help he just wins where it feels like alan does need help i mean it would show that alan needs help
Speaker 3it's very funny to talk about the roster help part you know the mike clay the the head ring to the visit to the second best roster but then i did notice as jeremy fowler rounded out his list of the best roster in the list for uh the top 10 players by exec scouts and coaches that the bills did not have a top roster on there i think they had less than five players on the top 10 in terms of uh the the play position rankings chiefs had five on there like they were one of the top teams that had the most uh players on the top 10 rosters which i thought that was kind of interesting for the chiefs to have as many guys as they did end up on those lists i mean you're counting nick bolton there too so i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing so the the linebacker list was all over the place so i don't know necessarily know if you can really chalk that up with uh i think they would rather be a year late on linebackers from what i noticed than a year early on on some of that stuff with linebackers from that list but nevertheless chiefs have have five guys there i do think it's so interesting matt when you talked about josh allen i think there was one response to you because i was looking at some of those replies as they were coming across my timeline and it was just like what is this guy doing he's not doing anything he's not doing anything he's not doing anything what metric are you are like what what are you guys saying that patrick mahomes like josh allen is better than patrick mahomes in this regard like because that's kind of where i'm confused it's like where where are we going is are we just doing yards and someone's like well look at all these touchdowns he scored and i'll say this touchdowns don't fucking matter if you don't win the fucking game like that doesn't
Speaker 2matter big history guy here okay talking he this man predates you and mostly me you remember erin are you familiar with the name jim everett i am familiar with the name yes is it because of of him being like ready to fight jim rome yes that is okay okay i had a feeling i might be where we're going with this look here's the thing jim everett was a really good quarterback of the rams in the 80s and early 90s and for three straight years 88 89 and 90 he out statistically outplayed joe montana joe montana arguably alongside bray the greatest quarterback of all time jim everett outplayed him all three years and joe montana had jerry rice okay like loaded team way more talent on his team than what was was had by uh by by ever everything for more yards more touchdowns and montana in those years went to two super bowls one of both was in a third nsc title game smoked effort in the 89 nsc championship game i'm willing to posit there wasn't a soul alive who was excuse me i'll take jim everett over joe montana right there wasn't a single part i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't care that alan ran for like 28 touchdowns unless it's i'm not saying it doesn't matter i'm not saying it doesn't make him a terrific player like yes he is he is probably not probably he is a bigger multi-faceted weapon than mahomes in that regard he is yeah but the point of the game is to win it yeah and like i don't get into all this stuff too with well you know he's been let down the plus bullshit i watched the 20 28 she changed the game was terrible that game the 13 seconds game absolutely there's nothing else he could have done and the bills wet their pants i agree with that 2022 the bangles were without three pitches are starting offensive lineup in buffalo the bills were more than a field goal favorite in that game got killed in that game alan was awfully scored 10 points 2023 alan's 10 of 21 for 95 yards on throws past the line of scrimmage he's generally awful and he also by the way had a fumble in that game that was about to be a 50-yard game-clinching scoop and score because he doesn't know how to hold the football and knocks to his eternal credit was able to knock it away that doesn't matter because tyler bass decided to continue the uh the the great the great buffalo tradition of wide right but regardless it was that game 2024 he throws two balls right at chief's defenders and fumbles three other times like is he ever just gonna have a game where the rest of the team doesn't have to play perfect yeah that would be my argument with him why is it that the rest of the team has to play but if he's the best player in the world why does the rest of the team have to be absolutely perfect for him to win a game like we talk about the brandon cooks play all the time like was it a pick was it a you know was it a catch here's an idea don't miss wide ass open dawson knocks on a seam route to end the game don't fumble before halftime because you're trying to run the ball 70 yards right like that's the kind of stuff that to me just just qualifies the entire the entire argument is just dumb and that's where like if you're gonna sit there and say well it's about the most recent year and six and eleven okay then staff was the best quarterback in football yeah there's no argument josh allen was the best quarterback in football shit there's no argument josh allen is the best quarterback in the a.s.e east last year none zero zero okay drake may make kate sean booty look like he was gonna be the next big time guy on the on the free agency market when he hits it it's true well i mean hell why isn't keon coleman looking like that why isn't josh palmer looking like that what what happened what's wrong why isn't that happening i mean if you're gonna go off of last year then alan's not even close to the top spot yeah my home sure shits further away based on last season although my home's at a higher epa than alan and play three fewer games that's neither here nor there um if we're going off careers what are we doing right it's like brady to like philip rivers who's who's better what what you know like what are we doing this is crazy i it's it is the season needs to begin and listen the best part is if the cheese ends up being good this year and they play the bills again the playoffs the funniest possible thing could happen yes just five and oh and now it's like a sweep plus one so we're just keeping it it's so far it's my home's in four right yes like we could retire that and then go okay my home's in four of the four now it's like we can almost don't like it's a series so like if my home's beat some 12 times in a row in the playoffs we'll just count it as three series it's three sweeps
Speaker 3correct it'll be good it'll be fine i do think it's kind of uh there was somebody responding to you it'd be like oh it's disingenuous to say that my home's is four no because like he's because josh allen's five and one the regular season like yes he is five and one against patrick what did those get you that's like i i've i also
Speaker 2said something it's like me
Speaker 3with the no magic saying oh yeah we swept the miami heat in the regular season so that so that means something
Speaker 2it's like saying as a magic fan well i mean you know it used to be a best of five in the first round if it was that we would have advanced oh correct yes i mean congrats your fucking lations i i don't know what that does for you in 2026 yeah yeah it's like the old kenny atkinson analytically we're up two to one yes lost the man congrats you know i the point of pro sports is to win actually the point of any sport is to win in fact if my kids ever play like you know any kind of little league or aso soccer i'm keeping the scoreboard um yes i think at some point you do just have to sit there and go well do you win do you win and like for all the talk and it's fair lamar jackson bad in the playoffs he's been bad in the playoffs it's fair alan's been to one more afc championship game yeah one more and has never hosted one like lamar has has never hosted the aces auto game like here here's another part of this if you're the best quarterback shouldn't you be a one seat every once in a blue moon that's a great point maybe don't lose to zach fucking wilson yeah like you know maybe don't lose to urban meyer like they did that one year that cost him a one seat maybe don't lose that game you know maybe don't lose to the dolphins like i mean at some point man yeah it matters sorry it matters it just does i i just there just comes a point where like come on what are we even talking about
Speaker 3i was going back through that 2023 season right because i've been working on this this piece de resistance for me of course um and the losses that they took before playing the chiefs they took a six and six record into that game by the way uh into their their 2023 matchup on december the 10th that was week 14 we're talking
Speaker 2about the bills going in six and six
Speaker 3right yes the bills
Speaker 2that was the hilarious year if you remember that like they played denver on that monday night with russ in buffalo yeah and let's miss the field goal but the bills are like 19 guys on the field so you have to kick it again right yes yes only the bills man only the bills they started off
Speaker 3their season by losing to the jets on uh open the season opener of the jets that was the aaron rogers game where he walked out with the with the flag and then plus
Speaker 2just coming down and then the bills were like no no we're gonna lose this game yep which by the way why do you remember why did you remember why they lost that game uh not off the top of my head no alan was horrendous and let me pull up he had at least three interceptions that game oh he didn't
Speaker 3have three interceptions yeah interceptions he was awful in that two fumbles one fumble lost
Speaker 2as well p pants 29 to 41 236 one touchdown three picks and two fumbles yeah one walk he i'm sure i'm sure that was everyone else's fault yes it was everyone else's problems that cost them
Speaker 3that game i this is another thing about josh allen before i get back to like that season leading up into there just like how they also lost to the jags and they lost to the patriots the bad patriots by the way this is mac jones and then they lost to the bingles at bingles and then they lost to the broncos before losing to the eagles in overtime before their bye week um this is the thing about josh allen i find so interesting his fumble luck is crazy this dude does not protect the football at all but because everyone else falls on it like dan orlowski tells uh that everyone like they like they should i'm looking at just like his playoff fumbles right now i'm gonna run through his game here real quick uh two fumbles one fumble lost one fumble no fumble lost one fumble no fumbles lost no fumbles in this game against kansas city in 2021 uh no fumbles one fumble none lost three fumbles one lost no fumbles no fumbles one fumble no lost then a couple of he did have a couple games where he had no fumbles in uh in the 2024 season but then three fumbles against the chiefs this was the afc championship game and none lost this dude loses this dude this dude has fumbles all the time this is obviously i've noticed this about him since he basically started playing he fumbles all the time but he has the best fumble luck when it comes with it and no one just talks about how his fumbles to fumble loss ratio is just absolutely insane well
Speaker 2because they're so busy talking about the fact that he's 19 turnovers in huge spots every year it doesn't seem to matter it's not important it's irrelevant it makes no difference we shouldn't focus i mean which i will say like moving into a different part of the conversation i do find this very interesting this has nothing to do with jesus why is it that some players get what seemingly is an endless amount of grace 100 and other guys rightfully or wrongly just get crapped on non-stop like jalen hurts is constantly like well is he good is he not good what's his problem what's the issue here well like justin herbert oddly is constantly this bastion of like well i don't know what else he could have done well you can't expect him to complete a pass i i gotta tell you i think i can't expect him to complete a pass um it's very odd like i feel like the allens and the herberts of the world there's like this endless parade of it's never their fault yeah but then like lamar jackson and i look far being for me to defend lamar jackson's postseason track record okay but like why does he get just crushed and yet justin herbert's over here looking like me in every playoff game that he's in well that's i mean what are you gonna do about that not a problem not a problem yeah why is that
Speaker 3i i have a theory go for it they're
Speaker 2white yeah i had the same theory yeah yeah yeah i mean i mean i mean it it it's a fair theory and it's two white guys sitting here i think we have that discussion like it's i think it's the amount of grace given to those two quarters now look alan obviously is better and has accomplished more than herbert has no i'm not trying to say they're two same guys even burrow to some degree it's like burrow hasn't been the playoffs in like a presidential term he's never healthy and you're these people who are like well i actually think he's underrated underrated on the field like how is he underrated i think the world of joe burrow on the field but like look man can you play this sport sometimes yeah i get it it's not your fault like it is reality here like it doesn't matter that you don't play football you know like it's like sitting there being like i think kawaii is the best player in the nba what for those 30 games he suits up in every year it's it is very odd to me how like jalen hurts has won a super bowl being to two of them and played great in both games i know the fumble against her again with bolton but was largely spectacular it was good yeah and was great in the other where he outplayed a thousand ways to sunday okay why isn't he ever given the correct like yeah man he's not a huge stats guy but like when the chips are down the guy is really good and then you have lamar who is look including the homes the most accomplished regular season quarterback of this era two mvps three first team all pros multiple years rushing for a thousand plus yards like that guy's he's an amazing player and yet like he can lose a game and he gets treated like a total bum but alan can lose a game handing out turnovers like oprah hands off cars to bo nicks and it's like oh well i mean you know the lineman had just fallen on that fumble it never would have happened right okay just seems like bullshit it's
Speaker 3the uh it's the sexual harassment maybe if you've seen that one it's like the guys say the same things but one guy's attractive and the other guy's like oh well i'm gonna lose a game and he's like oh well i'm gonna lose a game and then one guy's a little bit bigger yeah it's kind of what it is uh but yeah it's like the same thing too with like you're talking about statistically good quarterbacks that press got statistically good quarterback but i don't think he necessarily gets a lot of the praise he also does not win a lot in the playoffs like that also is a big part of it but you're right like i think there's some of those like justin herbert trevor lorz to an extent and we don't he's not really in the top conversation as much
Speaker 2and he might be this year like if he has a good year yeah no it's
Speaker 3fair but there's those guys get just more leash and like weirdly enough patrick holmes after winning three superbowls and having only four playoff losses in his 10-year career is maybe the worst has maybe the worst pr of any starting quarterback of the national
Speaker 2football league patrick holmes has won more playoff games divisional round than on and he won more of those games in 2023 than alan has won in the past year and he's not going to win in his career okay in 2023 but holmes won three such games including by the way over josh allen it's true bills ravens niners some are saying maybe the greatest run ever to win a superbowl okay somebody might make a video of it over who does somebody might have be working on this and been working on it since march um yeah um he won three of those games alan's won two in his entire career two and people have the audacity but yes but what about that five touchdown performance against the jets in week 11 it's like yes let's talk about that the other thing that oddly gets in there is always like well you had tyreek get tyreek for one of the super bowls right yes i i don't want to scare the hell out of anybody tyreek was not there for the other two juju was justin watson was okay i've never seen a group of receivers pull a bigger inside job than the 2023 chiefs if you look closely at the film those guys are actively committing crimes trying to lose the game okay it's unbelievable to the point that they they had a receiver running backwards in overtime of the super bowl after he caught a pass yeah they did i people are like well i mean yeah but what if josh allen had another great receiver what about
Speaker 3the right receiver room was so bad they said we got to trade for mccall harpin we gotta get him
Speaker 2back at all costs we
Speaker 3gotta we gotta do whatever we can to get this guy back can't cut sky more
Speaker 2right now need him it's poor kid dude they were they had richie james on the field in the super like often not like a snap i'm not like i'm not doing some bullshit little like staff pulling it richie james was a mainstay in that game okay and also you know you've pointed this out many times you're right about this you also would be just infuriated by this entire campaign james cook yeah nobody gets more like just like shrapnel in this argument to james cook well he's just surrounded by bullshit the guy just led the league in rushing right you know how much easier that makes his life that he's got the lead the leading rusher in the nfl and be like yeah i know i mean he's got a good line and the running back's great he's got a really good slot receiver but but like look at keon coleman who's supposed to know about this yeah
Speaker 3i mean picture
Speaker 2if every receiver for the chiefs was keon coleman which he might as well be and also isaiah pacheco in my home i'm hiring pa than last year it's crazy it it is crazy i
Speaker 3do think that there is not a fan base that hates their starting running well that's not true she's fans in isaiah pacheco last year was pretty pretty close to run for their money but there's no there's no more disrespectful of a fan base towards her starting running back than what bill's fans were last year like that was a big thing for me it's just like we we keep we keep forgetting what james cook's doing james cook is having a historical year this year i mean he's doing very good he's a very good running back it's not fair for you to say oh he doesn't have any help when he has james cook in the backfield i didn't look this up i'm sure that james cook's on the top 10 running backs
Speaker 2if i'd be surprised he wasn't he was shockingly not like crazy i was thinking like seventh oh that is
Speaker 3a little low i thought he would have been at least
Speaker 2top five i mean because you know like robinson and gibbs and whatever else but yeah i also was proud of himself
Speaker 3it is it is all very interesting conversation and i'm glad that uh i'm glad that we could we could discuss it further here uh before the break but we do have to take any thoughts on
Speaker 2that on the nicks lamar thing like i'll just clear the floor i do have any thoughts on just the nicks lamar
Speaker 3thing what you're saying with bow nicks oh wow you said nicks lamar and i thought new york nicks and lamar i was like did i did something happen that i mixed did he like buy the new york
Speaker 2with that it was about the next no lamar bow next the the colin cowherd uh for anyone who missed this i'll let me pull this up for you uh let me pull up the exact because it is a staggering i saw it i
Speaker 3had to scroll because i said i i can't do that right now i
Speaker 2can't i'm in a lot of my chair
Speaker 3yeah i can't mentally approach this right so
Speaker 2it's like a five minute video which no one needs to watch but the quote that was tweeted out by his by his uh show was quote i no longer trust lamar jackson in a big spot i'm selling my stock i take bow nicks today in the fourth quarter come from behind situation over a whole lot now i'll say two things about this number one was the word today placed importantly here like well in july i'll take it right now also a curiosity that i'd love to ask colin about i no longer trust lamar jackson that's like an active statement what the fuck happened in the last couple of months to make time recalibrate that thing that was my around on memorial day weekend like i gotta tell you i've been thinking about it don't trust him don't like his game like how does that take not like the day after the regular season ended or something yeah now now that take surfaces are just a staggering uh time frame there
Speaker 3that's what took me back at initially as he said now and they they didn't make the playoffs this year so it's like they could have just like he could have said that after you know like you mentioned like the regular season like the regular season like the regular season like the regular season the day after like why why now you know i was like did he was he thinking like a week ago he's like yeah i still trust them on a big spot and then he was like you know what no i can't do it um i again this is a conversation i think that goes back to to my hypothesis on the leash of quarterbacks i do think that i think half of that takes right i think that you i think it's tough to trust lamar in a big spot yes i don't i think that's unequivocally has been proven but the fact that he's like i've got to take bo nicks it's like no one's forcing you to say that that's the other part is like no one's forcing you to say bo nicks he he could have just ended his take i no longer trust lamar period end of sentence move on to the next segment hit the commercial break we roll right that would have been fine that would have been okay but he kept talking and he added bo nicks to it which i i don't know if anyone in their right mind would actually add bo nicks to that because i mean i don't know if anyone in their right mind would
Speaker 2bo nicks heard that clip i was like really you're right yeah i wouldn't take me i'm gonna tell you he's won one playoff game
Speaker 3right and bonus is curry's won one playoff game
Speaker 2they got dog walked in buffalo and then beat buffalo
Speaker 3beat buffalo because they were the one two seed last year right once you once you last year sorry yes and they beat the they beat the the patriots came to town but he didn't play in that game yeah right so he's one and one in playoff games and you saw a game where josh allen actively was had the explosive diarrhea virus and was just going down his pants constantly and they barely won and you said i'll take that guy i'll take bo nicks i don't i don't have a again i don't have a problem with the first part of it the bo nicks part is so confusing to me because again why why are you why are you choosing bone like what have you seen what is there's a statistically even if you want to like talk about the statistics wins yes we just got done talking about how the wins are good yeah he had a lot of wins last year that's very true he got a lot of wins last year but i don't know how you can look at how he plays quarterback and say yes this translates to other situations other than this system i it just it's it's baffling to me because you don't have any evidence
Speaker 2you don't um i just could not get over the framing of the whole take like sure yes i i've been thinking about this yeah and uh i no longer can trust yes lamar it's like have you trusted him in recent years right have you not been following along like i guess like the ultimate problem i have with all this is here this is a good summary of this from my perspective i don't know how anybody watches this sport and comes to some of the conclusions they have unless they are completely full of shit like i i just don't we all are entitled to having different takes we like different styles of the game whatever maybe like a power back like a speed back whatever maybe like jerome bettis and you're just wrong maybe i mean there's a lot of different things shout out to jerome bettis should be an all-time um like there's a lot of different ways to look at the sport and not be wrong just be different in your opinion thinking that lamar i think you'd rather have bo nixon lamar jackson is just wrong like this is no there's no defensive that day yeah and i will absolutely go that far and defend this to the end there's no argument that josh allen is an objectively better player than patrick mahomes you want to sit and say well i had a better year fine you want to sit and say well i think he's a bigger dual threat fine there's no world you could honestly sit there and go you know what i think he's better cool you know what we'll have a game with where our lives are on the line you take josh allen yeah and i'll take patrick mahomes and i'll just go to sleep knowing that i'm waking up tomorrow okay i don't have to worry about it because i know in a big spot one of them's gonna drive down the field and the other one's gonna leave it on tyler bass's foot okay like that's what's gonna happen it's it's just such a disingenuous lazy way it's kind of like again i compare it to basketball because i feel like sometimes a cross sport thing it's like when people are like well you know you know this year okay so you got luca and reeves and kessler and every other white guy in america playing for the lakers and it's a big tell you what don't sleep on the lakers forget that get out of here they're gonna win like 45 games get killed by somebody in the first round of the playoffs like we're gonna listen to this crap because people know they know it sells and they know it'll be you know it'll be good for their brand no one alive actually sitting there going you know what i think the lakers ought to they might give the thunder a run for their money thunder in three in that series no one actually thinks this crap right and that that's i guess my biggest frustration i say a lot of dumb things but i come by it honestly but you actually i believe it i'm not sitting there going what can i say that's total bullshit just to get a reaction like if i do that i am retiring from my job yeah like whatever i say whether you believe it i i believe it it's so many there is no way when they went to break colin cowell's like damn i don't know man i think i might have gone a bridge too far there like come on there's no way you could ever convince me that that wasn't the conversation the second they cut the break
Speaker 3it had to be if it's not we need a federal investigation um all right we got to take a break on we've just spent a lot of time talking about bozos but we are gonna have bozos a week uh because a lot of submissions in there as well so we'll hit that and talk about something else coming up right after this chiefs

Speaker 6a contact we had a team and they cared and we never sat in limbo at all with emprise they
Speaker 5they pushed us through they helped us support us and not only that but they've been our biggest
Speaker 6cheerleaders since the day wine everybody who wanted our money it was very difficult it was very challenging part of it but the people who were giving us the money in price bank that was the easiest part so we will always be grateful to emprise i'm cricket i'm jc and together we're the owners of yucca boom color bar come see us at park place looking for tickets?

Speaker 3a youtube comment that was left oh gosh i want to say a long time ago it might have been during the regular
Speaker 8season last year wow real
Speaker 3long time ago about how this show is just you ranting and me nodding along and this this episode specifically could not have been more true to that comment and it is very funny i do think about it frequently somebody brought it up on another one of the episodes about that comment just being like yeah he's like i can't unsee it now that i've now that i've heard that comment uh and that is what today's episode has been pretty much
Speaker 8sure i did i did somewhat co-op this entire situation and
Speaker 3that's okay like sometimes you know sometimes you just need some iso ball and sometimes you know i'll just i'll just post up in the corner and let you let you iso ball up top and i'll be there if you need me right i'll be all be ready in the corner if you
Speaker 2need me well i appreciate well next monday we're we're breaking down our quarterback rank because this is news to everybody except for me uh we're we're gonna see who falls above and below the cousins darn old line that's true yes yes i i uh i look forward to posting that and infuriating half of the fan bases around the league yeah that's gonna be good you can all guess what bo nix is gonna fall and that's that alone is gonna set off shockwave it's just oh my god how could you it's like yeah well actually again i watched the sport
Speaker 3that's what's so crazy to me about like the bo nix thing makes me feel like i'm taking crazy pills like people being like i think this guy's gonna be like an mvp it's just like did we watch did you watch the games like i that is so baffling to me it's like did you watch him it does not look like that well one
Speaker 2person i do appreciate in the space is he's a admittedly but stephen ruiz or the ringer who does his quarterback rankings and it's just steadfast that bo nix is not any good yeah bronco fans just scream at him constantly he's like yeah i don't care he's not by the way my quarterback ranking is out on si friday morning so enjoy those check those out yeah i i can't wait to tweet those out and then just watch people go absolutely insane be fun um spoiler bo nix 18 okay interesting
Speaker 3i i need to do mine so we can have them for the ring up together on the monday edition yeah and we can we can fully combine them and we can have our discussion and make the list
Speaker 2a lot does is the cousins darl line just between the 16th and 17th quarterbacks yeah i think so gotta be right yeah the epitome of this complete average mediocre nonsense did you oh
Speaker 3speaking of position or quarterback rankings did you see that uh jj mccarthy was like receiving votes on the the top 10 list and kyler murray didn't on the list yeah let me double check this voted him as a top 10 quarterback i i'm pretty sure that it that that happened um i need to i saw a tweet about it
Speaker 2person should be brought in front of a of a war tribunal well i
Speaker 3mean look there was somebody who voted patrick holmes nine
Speaker 2like like did fowler get like somebody on the line who he thought was like an nfl scout but like the guy like giving up the number a year ago yeah they're just some like some some like farmer in kentucky who was like i had the day i mean i haven't seen it in a while i look
Speaker 3i need to double check i thought i saw a tweet from like a vikings fan
Speaker 2that was like yeah jj mccarthy got any vote to be on the top 10 that person should be subpoenaed war tribunal and then court-martialed all of it
Speaker 3same unfortunately not true um oh
Speaker 2my god i was about to absolutely lose my mind unfortunately
Speaker 3not true i was kind of hoping that it would be was going to be true that twitter account who who would have guessed a twitter account lied
Speaker 2yeah who all while we're here before we go to the bozos of the week who also got votes just
Speaker 3out of curiosity yes so the honorable mentions that he has honorable mentions in like receiving votes honorable mention was sam donald jayden daniels jordan love brock purdy baker mayfield trevor lawrence jaylen hertz also receiving votes god this is ugly bo nicks daniel jones and cj
Speaker 2stroud okay so the nicks and the john i'll lay off bonus for a minute who the hell watched daniel jones last year and i was like hey i put him in my top 10 like what was that chris ballard or cj stroud like that's
Speaker 3kind of the same conversation what
Speaker 2yeah like again again does anyone have eyesight it's like it's like they asked helen keller to give the rankings my god and helen keller she was alive and be jesus i can see that those guys are in top 10 yeah unbelievable well kyler didn't get any
Speaker 3votes either so the vikings may be in a tough spot are you excited for this to be the mccarthy murray line here in a couple of years we you know
Speaker 2we could put that line in but like 24 and 25 right yes that is the mccarthy
Speaker 3you
Speaker 2just have another hilarious
Speaker 3oh my god so the lab has been doing their position rankings too as well i think it's it's fun exercises to kind of been doing to to follow along with these and uh and do your own position rankings with them was there was there anything that surprised you outside of like quarterback in terms of uh positional rankings i think we talked a little bit about the defensive tackle and and uh obviously with like the linebackers that came out a couple days after we recorded nick bolton still in the top 10 i believe he was number nine or eight yes uh with highest ranking as number three they also ran back the nick bolton is fred warner uh well we also got the nick
Speaker 2bolton is positionalist apparently and plays safety occasionally and slot corner my guys when he when the back motions to the slot and he just goes with him he's not a slot corner now he's just a linebacker playing in space but okay um listen i have conflicting feelings about nick bolton but saying that he's versatile and it's a bit much 100 100
Speaker 3i i'm actually kind of shocked he's only 26 to be honest with you um he is like shockingly young yeah that that's right i will say that i i mentioned this earlier but i i do think when i look at these positional rankings it seems like the execs and coaches and scouts for linebackers specifically are a lot quicker to be or a lot slower i should say but i do think they're a lot quicker to move guys because roquan smith is still number two he had a couple of not very good years but roquan smith still being number two is is very interesting but then carson swessinger being three is just like well you threw that dude up there pretty quick uh but he had a really good year but it just seemed like a lot of these guys though like zach bond being up four and like nick bolton still being on the list they just are would rather be a year later ranking linebackers and i think that we're kind of in a weird spot right now just in in terms of like the nfl i was talking to brett coleman about this actually he had texted me after this list came out we're in a weird spot in the nfl where like teams some some teams just like don't know what to do with linebackers like the the ramps don't care about linebackers and there's other teams that just like they you just don't know what to do it's such a weird spot right now because it's like we're kind of in a transition phase of styles of football where you don't really know what style of linebacker to to to add to have for this next phase that's upcoming it is very interesting where the state of the position is right now because there is just so much variety and you if you look at the also receiving votes they've got one two three four five six seven eight nine ten nine ten nine ten nine ten nine ten nine ten nine two three four five six seven eight nine guys had also received votes so like it's a wide-ranging
Speaker 2position it really is it's uh it's a position i think it's hard to define because for the longest time i was like well how many tackles do you have and i think people are realizing like all right yeah you have a lot of tackles it's funneled to you like what is the actual impact that you make yeah and that's it kind of depends like what defense you're in what you're asked to do like there's a lot of variables for an off the linebacker that maybe don't exist for like
Speaker 3sure i did notice too on the uh safety list that was on thursday brian cook former chief on the also receiving votes so he's uh mentioned for him as well yeah um any any of any final thoughts on these uh those lists that came out the hit fowler's
Speaker 2top tens uh no i think we've covered most of it i i think we're good um look i have i i commend jeremy for at least like doing the legwork on these and not just slapping together a bunch of nonsense absolutely of course i said i'm about to put on my quarterback rankings i asked nobody but me about um but no i i actually do enjoy reading those we're like a lot of these i just read them because i know it's about to be a topic yeah um like he actually does the legwork so kudos to
Speaker 3on another list that doesn't do any legwork um did you see that an update on the nfl top 100 the uh drake london is 66
Speaker 8i i did not know i saw kyle hamilton's like 63 or something yep which like what roquan smith 65
Speaker 3again he's coming off of a year where he did not just stick all the
Speaker 2ravens in the 60s so yeah we're good
Speaker 3pretty much yeah that's what they did yeah i still can't get over lamar being 69 that's crazy to me i don't i think we talked about that on the last show but like that is crazy that he's a 69 that they're gonna rate him the 69th best player in the in the league i know again last year he was hardened stuff like that but it doesn't feel right no it doesn't
Speaker 8uh that list is awful and should be shot into the sun
Speaker 3speaking of uh awful things that should be shot in the sun time for bozo the week hell yeah bozo the week presented by maybe you um shout out to everyone who submitted your bozos of the week uh this one is from from columbia missouri he said bozo the week is my seven-year-old son weston after a year older and last year's submissions didn't save him enough it's just a guy from last year it is he he hates his kid he's playing get in here they're
Speaker 2reading off bozo the week
Speaker 3another year older and last year's submission didn't shame him enough playing fifa 20 against the computer he scores his fourth goal and smashes my fucking 60 dollar in his celebration i've smashed many a controller in my day but not when you win damn guess it runs in the family
Speaker 2all right so here's the thing it's hard to call your son a bozo when let's face it we've all smashed a controller or two sure yeah i have certainly done it okay um that said 60 bucks man controllers aren't what they used to be or not like kb toys and going for like 12 bucks um i like his kids with 70 said yes seven all right you can't put him at the heart like you can't have him like mow the lawn next that's just dangerous so like maybe this is one of these deals you have them go out you know like listen you gotta you gotta like do chores inside the house one a day for two months and that'll equal 60 bucks because your bozoness here has cost me 60 that'll just tell him listen until you do all these chores or give him a list that you feel equals 60 bucks make tell you this you're not playing a game
Speaker 3anymore yeah it's a call
Speaker 2send him a message yeah you know that's telling or take something that he loves it towards 60 bucks and just smash it on on the on the driveway like a real parent uh-huh um i mean these are all options you can play to create a lifelong lesson i think
Speaker 3those are very strong moves as somebody who doesn't have any kids i think those are great i
Speaker 2thought my first time uh shout out to
Speaker 3uh to everyone uh who did uh donate or to donate uh who did uh submit as well but quinn i did i did also appreciate you putting a picture of your son for us to make a graphic of him very good uh thank you for that in the mail uh yeah put it in the mail um i do want to give a shout out to mark from anaheim who last week we did kind of rip him apart a little bit for being a bozoness on his submission and he uh i will read it in part i'm not gonna read the whole thing he said wow that was lame hearing the whole thing read back on air my whole take sounded super fucking lame real bushling so thanks for hitting me with a different perspective because i was way off base uh so mark thank you for uh what's the mark yeah look that's we pro accountability podcast here to realize after you hear your take right back like oh that's not a good take hand up that one's on me shout out mark for that yeah i give
Speaker 2him credit because like normally in that scenario if somebody emails us back it's it's just laced with like you're all assholes
Speaker 3yeah yeah right no accountability
Speaker 2right which is the problem in society today um i i appreciate that mark was like you know what you're right i i was i was bullshit and uh i'll be better you know if everybody took that tact we'd be in a lot better of a spot so shout out to mark who's off my bozo list good job by you good job mark
Speaker 3uh shout out to you i really do appreciate you uh listening hanging out and he did say uh hey i love the show discovered kcs in last year i love everything about it
Speaker 2except nate wow send that send that over to nate i should i should send
Speaker 3that over today and be like hey this dude loves everything except you that's the only answer
Speaker 2to that is we got a can nate i think so i
Speaker 3mean i'm not in a position
Speaker 2to do that but i'll i'll i'll i'll just go on strike thought that
Speaker 3uh last last one here i just i don't want to read all of chase's because it's pretty much what we just talked about on the first half of the show okay but chase from houston i want to shout out uh you and your passion for this uh he said in part we could do so many this week we can either talk about the jackass that ranked pat number nine we can talk about people's takes on why josh allen is quarterback one and their bs reasons behind it just because they're bored with the greatest and finally found a reason to bring josh up when every metric said patrick rohomes was more valuable to his team and played better than now the majority of the season is he has tried to piece the serviceable offense and fight against terrorists like matt naggy todd pinkston and connor emphrey and not offering proper adjustments post buffalo uh so yes i hope that we did the first part of the show in service because you're right there are so many bozos that were coming out this week out of the woodwork for us to talk about and he says anyway the bozo of the week is someone who i forgot to reach out about to to nominate sean payton for trying to tell us that he wanted to bring in belichick for 15 wins and then kick him to the curb potentially worse he actually thought about doing it or he's full of shit and wants to feel good either way what a bozo a bozo for just making wickersham right that bo picks is a top 10 quarterback and josh allen is the best quarterback in the league i think that's a perfect i don't know if we talked about that story matt of uh
Speaker 2we didn't and this story like to set wickersham's credit like that's crazy amount of a crazy amount of access to get yeah you're damn good to get that kind of access okay i tell you right now nobody's giving me that access that's nuts um but i i also think like like peyton floating that is just yeah i'm sure bill's gonna come in and just be like a caddy for you so you could just like not do that big of a job for the next couple years like you get paid 20 million a year and like hey i'm back like what it's crazy and by the way bo picks hilarious the best thing i've ever heard is mo picks which just kills me every time i hear it it's bust out
Speaker 3laughing mo picks is very good uh i i very much look forward to a very big fan of uh coming up with nicknames uh back in the day i there was a good one for juju back in the day i don't feel like i should use it very much very much anymore more because I do very much respect Juju, but. Poo-poo shit pooster was a very good one back in the day. I mean, it's hard to beat that one. But we're going to find a good nickname, a good slanderous, like Todd Stinkston. That's what they used to call him back in Philly when he played.
Speaker 2They called him a lot of things in Philly. They did. They did. The only other thing that's going on right now that we don't have to dive into because it's not an NFL thing, but it's absolutely hilarious. You see the NBA is investigating the Bucs are giving Gary Trent four and 64. Like, you know how funny that is? That the league was like, wait a minute. This guy sucks. Like, I'm sure Gary Trent feels really good about that. He gets a 64 million dollar contract. Hold on. Hold on. What are you kidding me? Why? We know Evan Turner signed for 70 million a decade ago. We know some other heinous things have gone down. But this, this is too much. And we're sorry, Gary Trent. Like, that kills me, man. For the NBA to take a stand on that. Well, also, and I get there's like this cap stuff, whatever, but it just
Speaker 8killed me when I saw I was dying.
Speaker 3I did you see that Adam Silver made it tried to make it very clear that the NBA didn't pause the trade between the Clippers and the Raptors. He's like the parties clear. Pause the trade.
Speaker 8Yeah, sure. Yeah.
Speaker 3I'm sure. Thanks, man.
Speaker 2Yeah. Thanks. Don't worry. It's fine. Kawhi is going to play 22 games next year. Just hang out.
Speaker 3Yeah. He might actually. Would he actually play more games if he was suspended? You know, like if he was suspended, he might actually. A little bit. Right. He might play more games. But I think that's going to do it for this Friday edition of that football show. Thank you guys so much. Listen all the way to the program and listen to us. Yell. And rant. Most about. Yeah. Yeah. And watch me. Not along. We appreciate our friends. I've been holiday bottle and bond bourbon holiday distillery for making the show possible. We couldn't rant and rave without them. Right. So thank you to them. We'll be back on Monday to probably talk about some more quarterbacks. And those are the ones we can hit the cousins. Donald line coming up. And we really do appreciate it. So remember, I'm Tucker Franklin. We'll talk to you guys on Monday.

  2. They cite a statistic that Mahomes erased a one-possession deficit on 13 of 14 fourth-quarter or overtime playoff drives, including 13 straight.
  3. Josh Allen is criticized for turnovers and for needing a perfect supporting cast, while his regular-season record against Mahomes is dismissed as irrelevant to playoff outcomes.
  4. Colin Cowherd's take that he would take Bo Nix over Lamar Jackson in a fourth-quarter comeback is mocked as indefensible.
  5. The hosts suggest white quarterbacks like Allen and Justin Herbert receive far more grace than Black quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, who has two MVPs.

  7. Jeremy Fowler's position rankings are discussed, including Nick Bolton's top-10 linebacker placement and the Chiefs having five players on top-10 lists.
  8. The Bozos of the Week segment features a listener's seven-year-old son who smashed a controller after scoring, plus criticism of Sean Payton and the NFL Top 100 list.
