Terror in Appalachia || Scary Reddit Stories || Ghosteas || Paranormal Podcast

The episode explores a collection of paranormal stories shared by Reddit users from the Appalachian Mountains, highlighting recurring encounters with unsettling phenomena such as ghostly figures, shadow men, and skeletal beings. One story describes a child seeing a pale blue, skeletal being that fled into the woods, while another recounts a voice mimicking a parent’s voice that frightened a child, leading to chaos in the home. A third story details a man in a dark coat and wide-brimmed hat seen by multiple people over decades, often preceding tragic events, suggesting a possible link between supernatural occurrences and local negativity. Another involves a shadow-like figure with red eyes that frightened a child, who later claims it may have been tied to a history of abuse and emotional trauma in the household. The final story features a woman on a horse farm who senses a howling presence and later witnesses a tall figure walking through the woods, with similar experiences reported by others. These accounts reflect deep-rooted cultural beliefs in the supernatural, with many suggesting that such events are not random but tied to emotional or psychological distress. The narrative is interwoven with promotional content for Progressive Insurance and Monday.com, using AI-generated storytelling to highlight its platform’s ease of use. Ultimately, the episode presents a chilling portrait of the Appalachian wilderness as a place where fear, history, and folklore converge, leaving listeners both fascinated and deeply unsettled.

Yeah, so, that's me. Welcome to the bonus episodes that we have for you this month. We're going to have one every Saturday up through Halloween. I'm really excited about it. And today is a very awesome topic. I think it's one you're going to love. Yes. And I. Sorry. I cannot look at you right now, because if I move my head, this thing falls off. So, I'm going to be looking directly to camera all episode. That's perfect. That's great. So, it's a place we return to often, because it's a place that houses so many curious and horrifying stories. The Appalachian Mountains are beautiful, but the monsters within cause such an intense fear in those who hear their stories. Today, we returned to Reddit, our favorite place on the internet, behind this community, obviously. And gathered experiences from random people on the web who claim to have encountered their worst nightmares in those woods. I'm so excited. Me, too. What a way to start. I know. I thought it would be a good way to bring in the spooky season. Our tea today is the same one we had last time, Tower of London. It's just so good. It felt right. Yes. And we're having them in our little alien mugs from Roswell, from the store called Hanger 209. Ryan went there, and he talked to this. Man, I think it was the owner named Dominic, and he was super sweet, and so just shout out, Dominic. Thanks for the mugs. Super sweet guy. All right. Are you ready? I'm ready. I can't see you right now when I looked at you, so let's go. I just have an intense urge to just. Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you really feeling your character? Uh, not really. Oh. I'm feeling these bangs. The bangs. I am enjoying the bangs. So our first story comes from r slash paranormal encounters from one year ago, titled, Is This a Crawler Encounter? I have a house in Appalachia. I follow all the rules. I don't go into the woods at night. I draw all the blinds. I barely go outside at night. Here is why. When I was 16, we left food out for the animals in the woods. I was standing at the door with the spotlight looking for animals. I was shining my spotlight through the woods. When all of a sudden, I saw a tall being that looked like a skeleton. Oh my god. It was a pale blue color. It looked like it didn't have any eyes. It looked at me and ran back into the woods. I got so scared that I almost dropped my spotlight. I thought at first my mind was playing tricks on me. But the more I thought about it, I know what I saw. The being was real. It was blue? I assume it was like that, like, blue translucent kind of? Oh, like, maybe like blue from like the moonlight-ish. Yeah. Maybe? Like when things are at night time? That's my guess. But it's a crawler. It was tall and like skeletal, like, um. In the comments, they were talking about how it looked like it had the skin stretched over the bones. Oh, that's disgusting. I should have made a sign. Like, this side says applause. I should have made a sign that said boo. Yeah, you should have. I wish I would have. Dang it. Crawler stories are some of my favorite stories. Um, I wouldn't say favorite. Well, okay. Favorite to get spooked by. Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. But, no. I'm not a fan. At all. I would not like to see a crawler, but I would like to read your experience about it. Yes. This next story comes from rslashghosts, also from one year ago, titled, Are the Appalachians Haunted? What is going on here? What's going on in the Appalachian Mountains? I've heard some horror stories come from those parts. Has anyone had their own scary stories visiting or living there? Or, if you've heard any, let me know. And, of course, there were many comments on that post. And this first one says, Some of my family lives in the Appalachian Mountains. There was a year when I was a small child, my parents decided to visit my aunt and uncle. My aunt and uncle live in the woods, and the nearest town was at least a 45-minute drive. They took my mom and dad grocery shopping, so I was left alone with my babysitter and three dogs. The first hour was normal, until I heard a voice. It sounded like my mom's, but that was impossible, because she was at the store. We heard and saw no car pull up. I answered the voice, and it told me to come down. What? I tried to exit my bedroom. But the dogs blocked my door. The dogs wouldn't let me or the babysitter leave for over an hour. When my mom and dad came back with my aunt and uncle, the entire kitchen and living room had knives, vases, and really random things thrown about. Oh my god. And some of the stuff was from places me and the babysitter couldn't reach. We still have no idea what it was. My aunt still lives in that cabin. Okay, first of all, move. Second, shout out to the dogs. Huge applause. Huge applause for the dogs. I actually love them. I love that. That's a good, that's actually, you know what, that's a, that's a good story. That's not a bad story for me. That's a good one. It's spooky to hear your mom calling for you, though. Yes, but ultimately. But it is good for the dogs. Ultimately, the dogs saved you, so like, yeah, I'm okay with that. Trust your animals, for sure. Also, it's really creepy that they didn't live there. This wasn't their house. This was their aunt's house. Yeah. But it, like, still mimicked the mom's voice. Who was just there for, like, what, a few days? Visiting. That doesn't even live there. I would expect a mimic type thing. To mimic the person that lives there. Yeah. And she'd be like, oh, I heard, I heard my aunt's voice, and so I went out, but no, it was the mom. And that's really spooky. Yeah. It was like, whatever it was, was, it's always there waiting for its next victim, you know? Yeah. I don't like it. This next one is from r slash ghosts from nine years ago. So an old one. Titled spirit slash entity cited multiple times over a 50 year period, usually before a tragedy strikes. Oh, no. Growing up in central Appalachia, I always heard ghost stories. And about ghost sightings in the area. One that has stuck with me the most is the story from several people I know describing the same spirit or entity in various locations and various time periods. The first time I was told of this spirit or entity was by my dad. His story happened when he and my aunt were very young, probably around 1961 or 1962, when he was around five years old and she was about 10 or 11. My grandmother and grandfather had a lot of property that included their house and basically a whole mountainside. Whoa. Their house was situated next to the road and the hillside raised up on the opposite side of the road. There was a path leading up the hillside to a couple of flats my grandparents had made with the first flat being about 150 feet from the house and the other one a few hundred feet up. My dad told me that he and my aunt were playing on the first flat when all of a sudden they both looked up the hill at the same time. They saw a man wandering out of the hills. My dad described him as being dressed in a dark overcoat with a black wide brimmed hat. Oh, my God. They couldn't see his face because he had his head down and the man was moving slowly towards them. But my dad described a feeling of absolute terror that swept over him and my aunt as the man got closer. They both got up in a panic and ran the hundred feet home. They frantically told my grandparents what happened and my grandfather grabbed his gun and went out to see who it was. My dad and aunt swear that it couldn't have been more than a minute from the time they took off running until my grandfather was up the hill looking for this man, but by the time he saw him, he was dead. By the time he got there, it was like the man had disappeared into thin air. The second time this spirit or entity was sighted that I know of was in the early 2000s, about a half a mile from where my dad's experience happened. At the time, my stepdad was married to someone else and she had an adult daughter that was engaged. It was Christmas Eve and the daughter and her fiance were getting ready to leave to go to the next place. They had both come back inside to say their goodbyes when my stepdad's ex-wife saw a man in a dark coat and a wide brimmed hat walking in the driveway when she glanced out the window. Again, when her and my stepdad went out to check, no one was there and there's no way someone could make it from the driveway to being out of sight so fast. The next day, the fiance of the daughter was found dead. Oh my god. Wait, did they say something bad happened that first time they saw it? Nothing bad that they know of happened the first time. Okay. Okay. Well, at least to them. Yeah. And I mean, they were five and ten years old, so something tragic could have happened in like the extended family that maybe just didn't make it to them. That is true. But in the comments, they said nothing bad happened that first time. The last I've heard of anyone seeing this spirit happened about five years ago, maybe a mile from where my dad's experience occurred. A family friend was cutting weeds on a hill up his property line. Past his property line are just woods, and there are no more houses on that particular hill slash mountain. While he was cutting weeds, he noticed movement in the woods. And when he looked, he saw the spirit dressed just the same as when everyone else had sighted it. He said it turned and headed to the other side of the hill. We're headed back up. hill very slowly as soon as it realized that he had seen it he didn't stay long enough to see which direction it went because he was so creeped out not long after as in a few days later a huge cloud burst hit the area and a few people died due to flash flooding oh my god has anyone else ever seen something similar it seems to be cited right before something bad happens okay so is this like death right it's like the the reaper like what what is this like a bad omen like mothman yeah oh don't say that about mothman well mothman predicted or or warned of or whatever he brought about yeah the bridge collapse yeah okay but when i think about mothman i think of our little plushie over there and so i think mothman is sweet so don't don't defame him but at first i was before all the bad stuff started happening i was like you know my first thought was if i saw someone roaming around outside like in the woods and they were you know maybe had like dirty clothes or you know they had like hunting clothes on or something i'd just be like oh it's a it's just some some guy you know whatever whether they live out there they're just hunting whatever but wearing a suit and like the hat and everything like he he doesn't belong out there yeah and it's like you what are you doing out here yeah this is that is dark did they say where this was exactly no just on the hillside in appalachia where their family lives um where i think a big like key thing for me is the really intense negative feelings that they felt when they first saw him yes like it wasn't oh there's just some wandering spirit or whatever wandering man it was like a dark one he doesn't belong here i don't belong in its vicinity i need to leave yeah this monday.com ad was created by a team of people and lime lemon soda now lime comes first seven up flip the sip but our next story comes from r slash humanoid encounters from three years ago titled solid black shadow man with red eyes encounter from childhood hello all i've been thinking about this encounter for over 20 years now and i still can't make sense of it so i figured i would share the approximate date and location 1997 to 98 in the appalachian region of the carolinas in the southeast united states i was a kid probably first grade maybe second i was sitting on the couch in our old trailer with my backpack on it was a double wide so i could look across through the wall opening to the dining room from the couch in the living room very easily it was a small space so this wasn't far away at all as i'm sitting there waiting for my mom to finish drying her hair she had huge fluffy hair because it was the 90s i look up and directly in front of me standing floating behind the dining room table is this solid black man i look at him and he turns to look at me we make eye contact if you can call it that because his eyes were just like two burning red holes it's just me today pretty much that's how i feel over here you're describing me just a shadow i am just a shadow when he makes eye contact with me it feels like time stops and i feel the most complete terror i've ever felt even to this day and frankly i've been through a statistically improbable number of real terrifying things oh no nothing compares to that feeling at all i was completely frozen absolutely terrified and after what feels like an eternity within a moment he just turns and kind of floats out the end of the trailer as soon as it ends and he's gone i immediately jump up and run screaming to my mother i tell her what just happened and she tells me that it's okay that was just my grandpa and i insist to her that he absolutely was not my grandpa we're from appalachia so ghosts and things like that are well accepted as real although it is definitely also understood that sometimes people make stuff up for the sake of a tall tale so yes ghosts are real but you have to look at it from a different perspective and you have to look at it from a with an attitude of discernment anyway i still can't make sense of it at all about a decade ago in my early 20s i found a story online about shadow men with hats and that really shook me up because it was the first time i had encountered somebody talking about anything similar to what i experienced but i haven't ever seen any accounts of this specific dude the sheer terror i felt completely consumed by fear gives me an indication that whatever this thing was it was not kind or good i don't know if it's true or not but i don't know if it's true or not but i don't know if it's true or not does anyone have any similar experiences well yes and they have an edit it says it occurs to me that it might be relevant to include that a lot of really messed up abusive violent stuff happened in that house and on that land and that i was raised experiencing things that no child should ever experience we'll leave it at that anyway a lot of darkness and straight up evil was in the environment okay so does the shadow guy the dark figure whatever it is bring about the negativity or does he show up when negativity is already there i'm trying to figure that out chicken or the egg i think that's always the question yeah yeah so is it is it a manifestation of the evil things that have happened yeah or is it just looking for its next meal oh my meal like to feed on fear my god and um hardship i don't what if you had to if you had to like gun to your head make a guess which one is it for you in your opinion i want to say that it's there because of the negativity i think i agree but in that first uh in that last one with the the shadow guy with the hat and everything he showed up and then the bad stuff happened that person didn't say like oh things were always bad for us yeah the other one wasn't a shadow though it was a man that's true this one's just a straight up like full fully all black form just shadow figure that is true okay you're okay so even if i or even though i believe that the you know it comes because of the negativity i do think that it can exacerbate negativity that's already there so like yeah so say say this family having struggles and they're really stressed out and they don't handle their struggles well and they are abusive or anything of that ilk i think having an entity like that there who feeds off of the the fear and the negativity makes it 10 times worse or maybe even more just it feeds off of it and it's just a never-ending like loop i could see that yeah that's my opinion anyway i that's my opinion yeah i agree i think all right well our next story comes from r slash paranormal encounters from two years ago titled my grandpa's childhood encounter oh wait wait wait wait wait the mom saying oh that's just grandpa what do you mean so was grandpa a dark evil person or is she just trying to comfort the kid okay sorry anyways i hope it was supposed to be a comfort because if my child told me a shadow man with red eyes that brought me great fear was floating in our dining room that's my dad say yeah that's our family yeah no that's scary okay sorry back to this one okay this one comes from r slash paranormal encounters from two years ago ago titled My Grandpa's Childhood Encounter. Hello, long-time lurker, first-time poster. Deciding to share one story, I remember my grandpa telling me. He has since passed away, so I can't ask him any details, unfortunately, but I will share what I remember here. So, for some backstory, my grandpa grew up in an extremely rural area of the North Georgia Mountains. He was, from his estimate, about 8 or 9 years old when this happened in the late 1930s, and it happened on his family farm. Now, he was a very religious man, but when he told this story, it was like he couldn't help but feel it was something supernatural. At this time in his area, they didn't have any electricity and no indoor bathroom. They had an outhouse some distance from the house, which meant at night, you would have to walk in the dark to use it. Well, one night, he got up and had to pee, and when it was nighttime, you generally didn't walk all the way to the outhouse to pee. You just did it right outside the house. This is what he told me, at least. Well, he started doing his business near the back door of the house, and then he looked at the side, near a big tree. He saw what he described as a white, glowing, ethereal, maybe, dog-like creature, or perhaps apparition. He said he just stared at it, and it stared back at him until he finished, and then promptly ran back inside the house. I guess he never told anybody about it until later in life, but it always gave me a chill, thinking about it, even for such a small encounter. I know a lot of weird stuff is not always the case, but I know a lot of weird stuff is not always the case. I know a lot of weird stuff is not always the case. I know a lot of weird stuff is known to happen in Appalachia, and I wonder if anyone could shed some light on what they think it could have been. Did anyone comment? No one really had any answers. I don't have a theory, I just thought it was very interesting that it was this glowing animal. Yeah, would you think that, did it say that he felt scared? Or he was just like, you know, kind of caught off guard, confused, stared at it? Because it didn't attack, it didn't do anything scary. No, I think it just freaked him out. I mean, seeing anything that out of the normal, like, what you expect outside when you're going to the bathroom and you're vulnerable, yeah, it would freak you out. But it didn't say he was like, oh my god, it like, I saw it, and I felt like I was going to die. It was just kind of like, they both saw each other like, oop, and then they both went about their business. Yeah. So to me, that one feels kind of like it could possibly be a guardian it could be okay yeah or like a spirit or forest spirit of some kind yeah like i think it could be okay yeah and i was gonna say seeing anything not even just a glowing ethereal looking animal but any animal or thing outside while i'm trying to pee would be horrifying oh well yeah in the middle of the night so but yeah but at least an animal belongs there yeah a man in a suit and a hat and all that stuff does not belong out there an animal it's like oh yeah well yes animal found outside yeah you know what i mean but i just found that story interesting i felt like i don't know it was kind of cool i think so i agree we all have that favorite sweater or best fitting pair of jeans that we reach for time after time the best that hit song named after the color of lemons not a coincidence big lemon has been pulling strings in the industry for years think about it but now seven up is fighting back with their new lime lemon soda now lime comes first seven up flip the sip we have one more story for our little bonus episode for this week it's from r slash appalachia from six days before i found it oh my god it's fresh it's titled something in the woods oh god of course i've lived on the edge of appalachia for most of my life and grew up very comfortable in the outdoors when i graduated college i took a job on a horse farm just on the edge of appalachia this farm was approximately 300 acres and i was the only person that lived on the farm in the employee house for about six months until my boyfriend moved in i had several events over the two years i lived there oftentimes when i would be out feeding in the pastures i would get this gut feeling that something was watching me the horses would react as well but i'd never see anything and just blame it on me being alone the weird feeling would pop up a couple of times a month the entire time i lived there the house that i lived in was an old three-bedroom house it had a dirt floor super creepy basement out of a horror movie the house was close to 100 years old but i lived there for free and as a broke college graduate it made it a little more tolerable i only used the downstairs bedroom and left the two upstairs bedrooms empty at night i would sometimes hear what sounded like someone walking across the upstairs the house the part that really freaked me out was my dog would sit up and follow the footsteps with her head oh god it makes it real yeah i eventually learned that if i ignored it it would stop eventually if i walked in certain parts of the house i would get this feeling of dread my boyfriend at the time and now husband had similar feelings when he moved in his dog was always walking around the house and i would also affected like my dog they would stare at the wall and growl and the hair would randomly stand up on their backs one night i was going to the barn to check on a mare that was getting close to foaling or giving birth it was around two or three a.m in the middle of march and we had about six inches of new snow on the ground i parked the truck and got out and started walking to the barn the stillness in the air is something i will never forget it was so quiet the only sound was me making my way through the snow and directly behind me the sound of the snow was so quiet down the road came this loud almost like a howl it sounded like a man yelling but deeper and more guttural like the lungs on this thing were incredible my body forced me to stop and turn to listen to this thing my instincts fully took over the howl felt like it went on forever but it lasted probably 20 to 30 seconds and it was close like no more than half a mile away when it stopped i hauled back to the barn and didn't leave the rest of the night until my husband and the day crew came in i was freaking out trying to tell them what happened the guys started picking on me until our part-time high school age stall cleaner chimed in he said that his dad and some friends some 20 years ago were four-wheeling in the same area when a large creature started screaming and bluff charging him and his buddies oh my god the stall cleaner claimed that his dad cries when he tells this story oh what a month later i was getting ready to walk into the farmhouse from doing night checks again i heard a similar howl to the previous one but further away this time again i stopped and turned and listened once it ended the coyotes went ballistic whatever it was they knew what it was and that was my cue to move it along a few weeks later my husband and i were driving to the farmhouse i was looking at my phone yakking about something when my husband stopped the truck i looked at him and he had a very puzzled expression on his face i asked him what was wrong and he said i think i just saw something i asked him what he said and he said i think i just saw something i asked him what he meant he said he saw someone really tall walking down the gravel road just past our house as he drove closer he said it looked back at him and stepped over the four-foot ditch in one smooth step oh my god and disappeared into the thicket i told him to turn around and see who this was because there's no way a person got through that thicket already and when he turned around and went to look there was no one around my husband is six five he said this thing was bigger than him and got through the thicket in under a minute it would take us 20 minutes to get through there thankfully we moved just a couple of weeks later oh thank god a few years later we were playing cards with some friends the topic of our weird experiences got brought up one friend brought her boyfriend who she recently started dating he started to act a little uncomfortable as we were talking about this he asked how close we were to this one small town i told him the farm was only about 10 to 15 minutes away and he started to shift a little uncomfortably and hesitantly tells us his story he said that he was hunting on a family member's property he went to his tree stand in the dark to try to avoid the deer detecting him so he climbs up and gets comfortable he goes to reach into the pocket in his jacket when he describes a nearly identical yell or howl to what i heard he freezes and tries to keep from shifting himself he doesn't move for two hours and as soon as it starts getting light he half jumped out of the tree stand and never came back the stand is still there years later after talking a little bit he says i'm sorry i didn't know you were here i'm sorry i didn't know a little bit we figured the howls and the strange figure sighting happened six months to a year before his hunting incident i don't think we'll truly know who or what we encountered we've been told ghosts bigfoot mimics etc i'm sure glad we don't live there anymore although we still live in the foothills of the beautiful appalachian mountains oh absolutely not absolutely not i would be moving as far away as possible i would move to a city after that that's so scary the woods of appalachia are a spooky place they are cryptids and devils and i don't know what they're creepy crawlies and spirits abound and i will never go there sorry sorry appalachian people i really want to take you there i i i don't have any desire to ever go actually i you know i want to travel everywhere i want to see everything except for that okay i think for now all right at least i want to do a challenge like if this video gets so many likes right drop natalie in the woods of appalachia all alone and who yeah and who's agreeing to that not me oh my god i don't know guys how many likes do you think natalie it would take to get natalie to go to it would take i'm not even kidding and i'm gonna give you a number that we're we're not gonna get a million it would take a million a million views or a million like either one okay if if this video gets a million views natalie's gonna go into the appalachian woods at night yeah and so with you yeah and so i'm not going like i said like i said that's insane all right well that's the end of our little half episode two today i hope you enjoyed these stories there were plenty more there were plenty more yes applause everyone applause applause sorry to any audio listeners that don't know i've been holding up an applause sign a very episode every time i held it up i was like oh can they see that this is a um should i should i expose it expose it i was supposed to bring a printed paper and i forgot to grab it yeah - Yeah, but hopefully it worked. I'll see it back in just a minute when I edit it. edit this video yes so like fingers crossed like this video if you liked it share it with your friends so we can get a million views so natalie can go to appalachia no actually block us block us now don't watch everyone leave a donkey in the comments if you can or um for our shirt to our costumes here also if you're only audio listeners yes i am lord farquad and natalie is the executioner i don't remember if we i think we said it but if not just a reminder you should maybe come watch the video yeah um other than that we will see you on monday you know that feeling too many updates too many meetings too many things falling through the cracks monday.com was built for that gap the ai work platform designed from the ground up for people and agents to work side by side and deliver more together drafting the brief flagging risks running a competitive scan your agent can do it all and the best part anyone can build one even you
