Could I argue this is the most interesting, unpredictable, maybe of all the top 15 teams coming into this year? Yes, the answer is yes. I think I can. Because of what happened last year, because of the really unique dynamic, normally you're not coming off a playoff appearance and then talking more about what happened off the field than on the field. Ole Miss fans, different. The rest of the country, they're talking about Lane Kiffin, they're talking about Pete Golding, which is fair. And I think the general feeling coming into this year is this unique balance of we made the playoff last year. However, the outside world may or may not think that a lot of why we made the playoff is not here anymore. So you get to bottle all that up. I view that as a plus for Ole Miss. That's a benefit if you harness it the right way. But Pete Golding now in charge. None of us 24 months ago or even 12 months ago were predicting this. But again, that doesn't matter. It's opportunity. So let's see. Let's see what he makes of it. And let's see what they make of it. Trinidad Chambliss is the best quarterback to me. In the SEC, you could make the argument coming into the season, best quarterback in the country. That is the face of the program. Not coaching transition. To be very clear, Trinidad Chambliss is the man here. And last year, these numbers, like I know he was incredible last year. Sometimes when you look at the numbers on paper, this stuff right here, it really hammers at home. Eight games of 300 plus yards, five games of 50 plus. And only three picks across 13 starts in a season that began with no one knowing anything about him. It's just interesting to see what year two is. So many times in college football, we've seen someone do something big and then you expect them to level up even further the next year and it falls flat. But other times it works exactly how it's supposed to. So you get a new offensive coordinator in here. Also, the league has a full year of now we get to try and adjust to you. Who knows? He may be good enough to play. It's where none of that matters. None of that affects him. But that's one of the great unknowns, I think, as we sit here in August. Three things I think I know about this team. Keewon Lacey is one of the best running backs in the country. This is why I continue to push back on this idea that I don't know if Ole Miss fans realize this because you follow the team day to day, but a lot of the outside world still thinks Lane just took everybody to LSU because that was the initial thought. Oh, he's taking the LSU job. Oh, he's going to take everyone. And I think facts be damned, once people married themselves to that idea, they never paid attention to the fact that, yeah, he took some guys. A lot of really good players stayed behind. Keewon Lacey's one of them. He was one of two backs in the country last year at the FBS level to have over 300 carries. But him alongside Trinidad Chambliss, that's a big deal because it's not a one-trick pony offense. And you got to worry about everything and you got to cover the entire width and length of the field because of that. But it's not just an offensive program. Your head coach is a defensive-minded coach. But it'll still take the rest of the country some time probably to adjust off of sort of thinking default offensively in their head about Ole Miss. But you shouldn't have thought that way last year. This wasn't an elite defense, but it was a top 40 defense last year. And they lost some key pieces, but they still have talent. You got Will Echols here. Cam Franklin's here. Sunterine Perkins is an incredible player. He's still there. You saw them all over the All-SEC preseason teams. Again, just flying. In the face of the idea that everything that was good is gone now. It's not anywhere close to that. You don't talk about preseason top 10 legitimately unless there's something more than just that. But also, if you look at what they did in the portal, you know, like Luke Forelli. Remember that big dust-up when he was at Clemson for a hot second and then he transfers to Ole Miss? Well, that was the soap opera part of it. The football player is a very good player. He was an all-ACC player at Cal. That's a huge deal. They got Keaton Thomas from Baylor. It's a big transfer. He had 103 tackles last season. This secondary is loaded with experience. And those guys aren't guys who are going to run the ball or catch the ball, but they'll be a big reason why Ole Miss is a contender if they are this year. And look, even with Lane Kiffin still gone, when you look at the way the construct of the team is made up, of the 22 projected starters, I think we had 18 being brought in via the transfer portal. Not all this past. It's the offseason, mind you. But it's still a roster that's been really constructed in a more new age manner. So in that sense, it kind of looks similar. Here's the things I want to know about Ole Miss. I want to know how they backfilled at pass catcher. I want to know all that production I saw last year and then losing five of your top six pass catchers. How do you find that production again? They only returned one player over 200 receiving yards. That was Deuce Alexander. Now they grabbed Jontae Cook. That's a former five-star guy. But the thing about recruiting rankings is once we have several years of production or lack thereof from you, you've got to stop referring to guys as former five-star guys. Here's what Jontae Cook is. He's on his fourth team. Got another opportunity here. And that five stars probably means he's got a lot of raw talent. But thus far, it's really been unrealized. So you got him and you got Darren Gill, 500 yards at Syracuse last year. Caleb Odom, former highly ranked guy. Can he emerge here? Or are they maybe relying on someone further down the depth chart? I wonder, because I don't see like a surefire guy outside of Alexander. I see potential, but not a guy I'd say, yep, write that name in pen. Put him down for 650 or 700. And I'd say the same thing about backfilling at pass rush. Principal Yaman Mielian, when he goes to LSU, that's the headliner. Man, nine sacks. He led the team in sacks, nearly twice as many as the other guys. As the next closest guy, he's gone. Yet no one else on the roster had more than five. That's a fact. That's why Cam Franklin is a circle name here. Because he's got to take a step forward. He's got to become a guy that backfills there. It doesn't have to be sack for sack or anything like that. But he needs to be a guy that you mentioned sort of in the first or second breath of pass rushers in this conference. Because if he's not, you may not have a team with a top end edge rusher here. What are the best units on this team? Quarterback, obviously. Trinidad Chambliss is the reason why. But Deuce Alexander as a backup provides a little bit of security there. Keewon Lacey at running back is another reason why you can circle the running back position. Makai Frazier, Joshua Dye, those are two good backups where it doesn't have to be him and only him. And the entire defensive back lineup here, all five starters are upperclassmen. Kite and Crawford, that's a top end corner duo. The safety room, they did a really good job fortifying that through the transfer portal. So I feel good there. I think Deuce Alexander, a wide receiver, if you were to label maybe a breakout player, Cam Frank, maybe, but if you go wide receiver, probably Deuce Alexander. It may just be a case where he goes from maybe a 684-yard receiver to doubling that. And it's not that he just takes this quantum leap and he looks way different this year. It's just he has to be more of a focal point of this offense this year. This schedule, we've got it as the fifth toughest in FBS. And that's important if you go last year to this year. If you're trying to figure out what carries over, how does this team compare to last year? Well, a lot of it has to do with schedule. Last year's Ole Miss schedule was the third easiest in the SEC. And this year, it's tough. And they start with one of the most under-radar games in the first month of the season, and that's Louisville playing them in Nashville. And I know Ole Miss fans really aren't overlooking that game or anything like that. But if you listen to the national conversation, you're picking up a theme, the national conversation, is a little detached from the reality of Ole Miss. The national conversation about Ole Miss is as follows. Boy, they got a big game against LSU in week three. Yes, they do. They also have a big one in week one. So I would pay very close attention to that. It's a huge game for Louisville. That's a huge game for Ole Miss. And then that mid-season portion is grueling. They go to Florida. They go to Vandy. They got a trip to Texas, Auburn. They got Georgia at OU back-to-back. So it doesn't really get all that much. If we look at the best case and worst case and most likely record projections for Ole Miss, courtesy of the model here, pretty wide range. Because this is the nature of how volatile college football is now, and especially in the SEC, because of the nature of the schedules you play down there. Ole Miss' best case is 12-0. You got the best quarterback in college football. You got Q1 Lacey. You got some stars ready maybe to emerge defensively. If it all goes right, there are 12 of no team. Here's what makes it difficult. What if it doesn't? You saw that schedule a second ago. What if it goes worst case for them? And you got some injuries, and maybe Trinidad Chambliss is a letdown in his second season. This kind of stuff happens in college football. They could go 5-7. They could go 6-6. That's in the cards. That's your basement. That's your very, very, very bottom floor. But we want to know what's most likely. And I'd say what's most likely with Ole Miss, according to the model here, is a 9-3 season, which puts them on the playoff bubble. One bounce of ball equals 10-2 or 8-4, obviously. But 9-3 puts them, I think, squarely on the playoff bubble. If you're a believer like me that there is a three-loss team in the playoff for the first time this year, maybe it's Ole Miss. Let's set the stage here. What does it feel like with LSU? What's the general feeling? The general feeling is the Brian Kelly era didn't work out. That's not a feeling. That's reality. So you just, you like, get eliminated from the poker tournament, but then you say, no, we ain't done. And then you just buy right back in and you go for it. And LSU's going for it. And there's no need to apologize or feel bashful about it because that's the world we live in right now. And what you can do is you can go hire the best head coach out there, and you could pour a ton of money into a recruiting class and a portal class, and you don't have to wait three or four years. This is not the old school. This is the modern age. And everybody feels that. So there's the flash, like Hollywood glitzy headlining type stuff. And then there's the football stuff. And in LSU, you don't have to worry about that. So you just buy right back in and you go for it. And then you three things I think I know about LSU. Number one, the run game just flat out cannot be as bad as it was last year. A lot of times things go decently and fans say, oh, this couldn't be worse. And they're wrong. But in this case, it really can't be worse. LSU was the worst rushing outfit in the SEC last year, 126th overall in rush yards per game. Just unfathomably, mind-bogglingly bad. It's tough to say. I never have to say it. So the good news, and this is very good news, is if you look at Lane Kiffin's six years at Ole Miss, combine all of them, no team had more rush yards in the SEC than they did. So he's going to run the ball. If not immediately, then eventually. But I think immediately there'll be an uptick here. And it's important because if you look at Sam Levitt's success at Arizona State in 2024, a pretty balanced offense was the key there. So that's going to improve. Just how much does it improve? Another thing I think I know is there's no bigger goal line threat from a pass catcher perspective than Trey Desgreen. Trey Desgreen is if you've got someone who's never really watched football and you want to blow them away, sometimes you'll show them like a big left tackle or something like that. You show them Nick Harbert, South Carolina, show them Trey Desgreen. And they'll think, that's a real person? 6'7", 237, and he moves like that? He only had 30 yards in the SEC. He's not going to be able to do that. He's going to have to three receptions last year and still led the team in touchdown receptions. So I don't know how much I would bet on that increasing, but like 50 receptions, 60, I don't know. But he's going to blow up this year. I can't imagine a situation across college football where a singular player inherited a better upgrade than Trey Desgreen finding out, what's this? I'm hearing Lane Kiffin's my head coach. Oh, we got Levitt from the portal. Well, that's wonderful. That's awesome. The other thing I think I know is this front seven is going to cause a lot of havoc. Blake Baker, American hero at defensive coordinator. When you look at what he has here, Witt Weeks is the only returning starter, but I could not care less. This unit is going to be very nasty. And you went to the portal and you upgraded with like Yvonne Miellen, Malik Blockton comes in, Jordan Ross, TJ Daugherty, but what they also did, and this is going to matter early in year one is they hit on this freshman class. Deuce Geralds, Richard Anderson, both immediate impact guys on the interior of the defensive line. Lamar Brown at edge already pushing for starting reps. I mean, these were guys that are very, very heralded coming out of high school. And yet I remember the retort was, yeah, but I mean, come on now. You're one true freshman guys up front defensively in the SEC. That's not going to work. Hey, they haven't played the games yet, but it sounds like through practice, M.A. work at LSU so here are the things I want to know about them take the wide receiver group where in the whole range of outcome does the wide receiver group fall because I could see it being good I could see it being great to elite if Lane Kiffin just you know sprinkles the dust that he tends to sprinkle across his offense on these guys that could happen if Leavitt really is just back to his old ways that could happen but there are a bunch of players here there are a bunch of names here there's not a ton of proven production which doesn't necessarily mean I doubt them it just means you could see a much wider range of outcomes I could see the room being anywhere from the best in the league to a net disappointment and that's just a huge question mark for me personally like Eugene Wilson's a guy who transferred in here if if Eugene Wilson is a guy who transferred in here if if Eugene Wilson is a guy who transferred in here if if Eugene Wilson recaptures his peak form he can be one of the best receivers in the league and no one outside LSU is talking about him right now just one of many questions there also in the secondary can they develop depth you know you'd be hard-pressed to find a better corner duo just in terms of upside than DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland but if you like I'm looking across the rest of this and the safety room kind of fills up in the air maybe outside of Ty Benefield got a lot of competition not a bad thing but I just want to know four weeks into the year are we looking at that saying boy they can't afford to have any injuries here or are we looking at it saying man good on them do they've developed some real quality SEC caliber depth in their secondary and thirdly I want to know if that offensive line has enough juice I give them credit they did not stand by and just hope things magically work themselves out they knew they needed help and they went and got Jordan Seaton out of the transfer portal all of a sudden they're like all of the interior O-linemen are fifth year seniors so there's some experience there's some well there's some eldership there on the interior there's a young guy left tackle that's going to be a future first round NFL type guy but is that unit like a six out of ten or do we find ourselves midpoint of the season saying man this offensive line is playing well above the level I thought they would that's a seven and a half eight nine just kind of I don't think it'll be terrible but what level of good will it be could it be great best units on this team quarterback quarterback because of Sam Levitt again if he re-emerges sort of back to his pre-injury form but also Husan Longstreet in that room is not the worst situation in the world to have if you need depth if you have to go to a backup but the edge position here I do not expect them to be 66th and FBS in sacks per game this year I'll say that Yaman Mielin and Ross and Lamar Brown they've added really really high level traits type position here those three are going to tee off man like Clemson goes down there in week one good luck good luck to anyone that has to face that team this year if we're circling a breakout player I'd say Dylan Jones at running back they hadn't had a thousand yard rusher at LSU since 2021 that was Ty Davis Price and Dylan Jones is a transfer from Wisconsin he was injured last year but still he's a great player and he's going to be a great player for the rest of his career sort of emerged as RB1 throughout fall camp and Harlan Berry is there Caden Durham there I think that if he stays healthy you you could see him you could see them try and use Dylan Jones sort of in that like Kiwan Lacey type role not doing the whole comparative player versus player thing but if that's true you may be looking at a thousand plus yard rusher here the other breakout players like Deuce Geralds and Richard Anderson at defensive tackle you could throw them out there and they're going to be a great player for the rest of their career Lamar Brown in here too but I'm really just honing in on Anderson and Geralds it's just so surreal to see multiple players at that position pushing for early starter reps in their true freshman year I don't know what much more there is to say about that the schedule breakdown it's it's kind of difficult because every SEC schedule will be some degree of difficult but by SEC standards 11th in the SEC they got a good test against Clemson in week one but they get him at home it's kind of a tale of two seasons really because there are three games in their first four games that are losable Clemson at Ole Miss A&M and then they'll kind of I think disappear maybe off the national radar for a second and then they're coming back with at Auburn Bama Texas at Tennessee at Arkansas huge rest disadvantage the reason I mentioned the Auburn game there that's LSU's eighth straight game Auburn's second game off a bye there so they're recently rested let's go to best case worst case most likely record here over under win total at FanDuel's eight and a half I think LSU's best case is 11 and one I didn't quite go undefeated I think even in the best of worlds here there's enough transition where someone gets them 11 and one's plenty good enough to do whatever you need to do though worst case would be it does not come together and the schedule bites you there's probably injury here maybe at the quarterback position and five and seven is if it totally bites you there's probably injury here maybe at the bottom doubt but if you thread the needle what is the most likely record outcome here and the model is spitting out 10 and two as the most likely record outcome for LSU now I gotta say that makes me a little nervous just because there's so much unknown there but I will admit I think there is some point this year where it all comes together for them is it early is it week two or is it week nine do we find ourselves saying boy LSU that's the team you don't want to play now too bad they lost a few games early or is it just clicking early and we're saying man the team could win a national title this year well the model goes 10 and 2 as the best case for LSU and if that's the case or the most likely and if that's the case if LSU goes 11 and 1 or 10 and 2 LSU's in cristobal and shannon dawson and cory heatherman and huge credit to them for getting defense figured out because a couple of years ago that prevented them from maximizing the potential of cam ward and then heatherman came in last year and i don't think it was any small coincidence that they were right there less than a minute away from winning the national title so the general feeling i think going into this year with this team i guess depends on the team but i think it's going to depends on how familiar you are with the roster if you're not familiar you probably look and say they got close last year but you lose the qb and you lose those star pass rushers so probably take a step back right well if you know the roster well and i think i do you don't think that at all it doesn't help you losing ruben bain akeem mesador i actually think they upgraded a quarterback so i'm not even going to talk about that uh with darian mensah coming in but i think this team could be right back there in national championship contention like i would be surprised if they weren't so that's how high on the overall caliber of roster miami has that I am Darian Mensah at quarterback I understand Miami fans you're well familiar with him by now but there may be some other people out there watching a team preview because they're trying to get familiar with Miami this is a third year starter been at Tulane been at Duke but last year six games with 300 plus passing yards and he's here's what's very important he's really really good against pressure 21 touchdown passes no picks against the Blitz last year and he gets to play under Shannon Dawson now and that has number one total offense in the country written all over it to me that's well within the range of outcomes by the way that prediction's not a bust if they only finish number three I'm just saying they're going to be way way up there they averaged over 40 points per game per two years ago I think they'll end up surpassing 40 points per game this year he needs to stay healthy because there is a big quarterback drop off one to two so let's just let's not worry about that let's keep Darian Mensah healthy three things I think I know about Miami number one they have an elite wide receiver duo but it won't just be two guys that are studs in that room Malachi Toney took the world by storm last year he is a stud he's one of the best players in this sport Cooper Barcate comes with Darian Mensah from Duke he was a thousand plus yard guy last year he was Duke's best receiver Joshua Moore when I was down there in the spring like that was the guy people were whispering about Vandarius Jacobs comes in from South Carolina so they've got options and that's not an exhaustive list they've got other guys I didn't mention there that are really good and I think the offense will have no issues with balance they return Mark Fletcher Jordan Lyles in that room but I'm telling you they probably believe they got three or four guys that are really good and I think they're going to win this game or four running backs that they can win with and what I think that means is if I look at Fletcher's numbers last year he was just under 1200 yards I think there's a world where Mark Fletcher's just as good as he was last year or improves but he doesn't match his regular season rushing output because they have the luxury of being able to depend on multiple guys and to me that's the strategy that I would aim for if I'm Shannon Dawson I want to be able to ride Mark Fletcher championship game in round one or two of the playoffs I don't need to have him carrying about 24 times against Wake Forest in September because I don't have to do that so I think you'll see they got a very deep stable in the running back room and I think the secondary is still elite I in in fact I think in the aggregate they upgraded from last year to this year at corner OJ Fredericks there Xavier Lucas Ethan O'Connor you look across the entire secondary Omar Thornton good depth they were elite against the run last year they were good against the pass there were 43rd and pass yards per game allowed that number will improve this year I think they'll take a moderate to significant step forward that'll be a really really good secondary here are the things I want to know about Miami how's that offensive line fair I know what Mario Cristobal's area of expertise is I know Alex Mirabal is one of the best in the country you're only as good as what you have to work with they got a lot of good players in the league they got a lot of good players in the league they got really good players the difference is these players are unproven but they got really good players Miami is one of the quintessential question marks don't equal weaknesses programs because their question marks are better than a lot of team strengths having said that Jackson Cantwell comes in one of the top offensive tackles in the country he gets thrown into the fire immediately and I want to know also on the interior of that offensive line how does that fare and here's what's likely it's likely that there's some up and down nature to it early but it eventually rounds into form like at some point this year they're going to have a good offensive line at least is it an immediate or is it eventual and they don't have a murderer's row of an early schedule so they can afford if it's either replacing defensive stars like the edge group's still great but losing Ruben Bain and Akeem Mesidor makes an impact and that's even with me believing in Damon Wilson that's with me as a result of that and I think on defense Marquise Lightfoot this is very easy breakout player there because he may not profile right now like Bain or Mesador but he is likely to become their next elite pass rusher he's got the quickness the bend the athleticism all the you know the NFL scout traits that they would list off as what they look for in a premier pass rusher and he's added 30% of the time he's going to be the next elite pass rusher and he's going to be the 35 pounds in three years since he's been at Miami so I mean he came in there and that body type completely gets transformed what about the schedule at Miami 56th in the country that's what we have it rated doesn't matter I mean you are you play the schedule that you're dealt it's not like you apologize for it but they've got that road game against Notre Dame they go to Clemson early on don't know what Clemson's going to be by that point but the big stretch is starting in October they get a bunch of wildcard teams like if you look at Clemson FSU Pitt like those are wildcard teams no one knows what to expect everyone's going to focus on the Notre Dame game do you focus on Duke the next week Virginia Tech the week after that just a bunch of could be really up could be really down type teams let's take a look at what the model thinks about a variety of record projections for Miami what's the best case here easily 12 and 0 what's the worst case this is crazy and kind of a question of the caliber of team but also the strength of schedule the worst case from Miami is nine and three how does it go worse than that maybe like catastrophic injury somewhere maybe but outside of that because we don't forecast that I'd say nine and three is the worst the model says 11 and one is their most likely outcome record wise and that of course probably means a loss at Notre Dame which means they go to the ACC championship game they probably win it they're probably in the playoff maybe with the first round by who knows but I mean that's they've got they've got high level national championship contender written all over them and if you don't believe that yet I would just say watch them early
