Speaker 2Yes, hello, good afternoon.
Speaker 3This is the City set, Mick Gannon, Peter Anthonis, Matty Campbell with you all here. Thanks to Better, Better, Ahead of the Game. What are you really gambling with, lads? It's a big week of racing ahead. Of course, the Golden Eagle. Worth absolutely seeing. The Squillians looking forward to that. Of course, Derby Day down there in Flemington, where both you gentlemen are this afternoon. Good morning to you, Peter Anthonis.
Speaker 4Yes, g'day to you, Ganno, Matty Campbell, everyone at home. It's one of the great weekends, isn't it? Coming off one of the other great weekends. It's just that time of year. It's hard not to get excited about every race meet that comes up. It's just such a pleasure doing the form at the moment.
Speaker 3Really, you have three grand finals in a row, Matty Campbell. But we've already had three. We've got another three to go. Four to go, in fact. How are you traveling?
Speaker 5Yes, hello to you. And hello, Peter. Now, I echo those words. This time of year, and I was talking to Bryce coming up on the lift. This time of year, you can't help but just sort of focus all about racing, isn't it? Especially at Flemington, just go from one to the other. Either you're doing form, or you're having a beer, or you're at the races, or you're doing something. But for 10 days or so, all you do is think racing. And my wife's used to that, which is good. Because she doesn't expect to see me.
Speaker 3Taught her well. Taught her well. So I'm looking forward to getting down there with you gents as well over the next few. Two days. Papaloa, he's back. He'll feature on the show. He's in New York, but he's sent his tips through. So make sure you stay tuned for a bit of that later on the show in the Best Bets segment. So looking forward to that. But let's kick off what was last weekend, gents. What did you make of the racing in Sydney, Pete?
Speaker 4Oh, look. I mean, overall, it was disappointing for me because I did back linebacker, got top price, and I got linebackered. So it serves me right. Look, it was a funny day in a sense, wasn't it? Like, it was certainly no disadvantage, as we predicted, on pace in Sydney. But then you had horses like, you know, DiClici Boulevard, who was clearly just too good in that field in the prelude, just coming down the outside. But then also Central Europe won coming down those wider lengths. So I don't know what this actually means. Because, you know, is that war woven form just so elite at the moment? Has he just finally found his right race and knocked off the maiden? Or is that field just no good whatsoever? So I feel like if war woven was in that field, he probably wins by about eight lengths. But maybe it was just right place, right time for old Central Europe.
Speaker 3Yeah, I think it probably was right place, right time. Albeit, you know, on the day, there's only two horses that made up significant ground. And that was DiClici Boulevard and Central Europe. So I think Why So Hard's a really good horse, Pete. But that was, as we spoke to, that was a shocking setup. And you can understand why they go there. The race is worth a million, and they picked up second prize. So they've had an absolute fill up Team Hawks and Connections. But the performance of Central Europe was very good. I think that's a new career peak for him as well. He'll be tipped out. He'll come back in the autumn. But he was good, Matty. We saw Linda. Obviously, too good. It's unfathomable to think that they could just let this horse just do what it did with Nashor Willer out in front again. Like, is there any threat someone wants to have a go and take him on, Matty?
Speaker 5No, that was easy to watch, wasn't it? Just everything panned out the way we expected. And Nash knew he had that race under control right throughout. And it eventuated in the straight that nothing could get past him. But just quickly on Central Europe, I hosted a fundraiser on Friday. So I interviewed Chris Waller. And he was very keen. On Central Europe, he said, right race, right time. And I mentioned to him, and no war woven. He goes, yes. So he was very pleased. But he said the horse is still a big rat for the horse. And the horse has still got plenty to offer.
Speaker 3Yeah, I mean, you'll come back a bigger, stronger conveyance as well. Pete, did you catch him down there? Or you were awake off of Guinness Day, weren't you?
Speaker 4I was, yeah. So it was only my first time seeing Warwoven on Saturday. And, jeez, he is such an impressive athlete now. Yeah, he is. He's not necessarily like your prototype sprinter. So to speak. He's not in that sort of mold. He's got more sort of angles to him. So he is like a real smooth moving horse. So I'm not surprised that he's running super mile numbers like he has been. But he didn't look out of place there in that Cox Platefield, which I think is a big rat for him going forward as a stallion prospect.
Speaker 5Just to extend on that, what did Blind Rays look like in the mounting act?
Speaker 4Oh, look, Blind Rays himself, like, again, he's another horse that didn't look screwed down coming all the way through this preparation. And then suddenly there on Saturday, he's, again, he's not quite the furnished product or the finished product, I should say, just yet. And he looks like he's going to improve again coming towards the autumn, just with a little break under his belt. But I guess Warwoven for me is the one I gravitated towards, just purely in terms of his current condition and his movement. Blind Rays, probably not as smooth a mover overall, but I certainly can't knock the horse. I mean, he's shown great tenacity throughout this preparation and has just found Warwoven to be a little bit better on occasions.
Speaker 3Yeah, true. What do you think that makes for the chances of a horse you've seen in Sydney who's been beaten by Warwoven twice, arguably, and I talk of St. Garth, I arguably probably should have beaten it first up if you swap runs. And obviously the Golden Rose, Warwoven had a PR and St. Garth was just getting bashed by Guesthouse or vice versa out the back and ran on world. Do you think that now becomes the key form line? Any Warwoven form is just the group one, A1 form?
Speaker 4Well, it certainly, it appears that way, doesn't it? And the market hasn't missed St. Garth as a result. It's interesting. You're looking at just raw ratings and numbers and, you know, a few of them, two of these other sprinters in the next episode, so Tono Glow, even Natural Fling, they have really impressive numbers. They've put it on the board. And then St. Garth, yeah, almost have to, I guess, add in that extrapolation of what his potential is because we haven't seen it to the absolute capacity. And I just love this setup as well going, and we'll get to the Coolmore, I'm sure, but this 1,400, hard run 1,400 back to the 1,200 down the straight. I know it's for the first time. That's the only sort of knock against him. That's the question mark, isn't it?
Speaker 5That's about it.
Speaker 4Yeah, I love everything else about it, but that's such a, such a difficult race to actually look at and bet on a Thursday without knowing any other details as to what the weather's doing, which part of the straight they're in, how they're going to turn up and parade in front of a huge crowd. Like, there's so many variables to that race. It's an absolute cracker.
Speaker 3Yeah, certainly is. Looking forward to that. We will touch on that race a little later on. Let's go to 3-2-1s for performances of the week. Matty Campbell, kick us off.
Speaker 5Now, where do I start? Just tongue-in-cheek, firstly, to one vote to Darren Biedman, who had to do five. Interviews on Saturday with Greg Radley on Sky Racing Thoroughbred Channel because the Wallace Day will train five winners. Chris was in Melbourne, as we know, and it was funny because we were talking about Wallace not training a winner in Melbourne, but back home they were just winning every second race. So well done to Darren Biedman coming up with something fresh to say five times. Tommy Berry, this is fascinating, this jockey's race in Sydney at the moment. We know how well Zach Lloyd's going. We know J-Mac's the benchmark, but Tommy Berry's riding brilliantly at the moment. He comes up with another treble. He's right there running the best of his ability and right up the best we've seen from Tommy. But the easy one for me was three votes to the entire combination of Bob Peters, Andrea Leake and Willie Pike for that win on Cosmic Crusader in the Cox Plate. The Bob Peters interview was just outstanding. That's what we love about racing, people with their passion, people with emotion, and our pikey's pikey. So I loved it. I thought it was great. I didn't have a bet in the race. It was just a quaddi-leg for me, but yeah, I loved it.
Speaker 4Pete? One vote to the Australian cricket team. I actually don't know. I don't know what's going on with them, but I'm not sure if they're just trolling everyone at the moment, but I mean, some of the team changes they've made and some of the performances overnight, credit to Josh Inglis and Cam Green coming off injuries and coming straight back in and not looking like they've missed a beat. I still don't know what's going on with them going forward, but I'm happy to see it. They're playing interesting cricket at the moment. And then two votes, three votes. I'm just going to echo what Matty Campbell said. Two votes to Smooth Chino, three votes to Cosmic Crusader. It's been a while since I've had the West is Best chant going there. But it's only taken the best part of five, six years, but it's back. Just echoing that interview with Kate Watson, Bob Peters. It's the first time I've seen Bob cry. I've seen Bob collect that many trophies over the last 20 years and quite often it's just like straight bat, you know, short answers and so forth. But to hear him actually lose his train of thought and lost the words for a couple of moments, it was incredible. And Pikey's like just natural enthusiasm after the race. Just what a relief. What a salute for the ages as well.
Speaker 3Well done, Pete. You've stolen two of mine. They were the obvious though. Bob Peters, Andrew Lee, the whole team involved with that horse. You get one point, super stuff. The fact that they just continue to race this horse. We see horses. We spoke about it in the last few weeks about, you know, horses with grand finals. And yet again, a horse that's just there prepared to race week in, week out, or, you know, 14 days apart or whatever it may be. Just turning up with no real grand final in sight other than just to try and win as many races as possible. They got the job done. And two points to Willy Pike. I think we've seen a different version of Willy Pike. We're certainly from the Sydney side. I'm not, or New South Wales and Eastern Seaboard, I should say, and Victorians over here. Because we're used to sort of just seeing him, you know, one, two word sort of answers and doesn't really give away much. And he's seen, he's celebrating. You see him getting involved and, you know, getting stuck into sort of Trav and a few of the boys with their opinions. And it's been great. It's a different side of Willy Pike. Yeah, it is. That's what we want from superstar jockeys. Yeah. Have we ever seen him? celebrate like that, Pete, in WA?
Speaker 4no not not really like he's always been you know a little bit chirpy here and there like between being a little bit you know irritated and annoyed he he does have a very short fuse when he doesn't win he's one of those great jockeys yeah he just gets off a ride he thinks it should have won he'll absolutely spit the dummy and he's harder on himself than anyone else so um he doesn't need to be told when he's done something wrong so i feel like for him that was just such a fill-up and listening we we did an interview with him on correct weight on sunday and just his ability to run through the race and go i had jmac in front of me but i was traveling so much better and just when you
Speaker 5watch the replay it gets
Speaker 4better doesn't yeah and he was absolutely bang on um so it's it's an absolute credit to him but i agree he's riding just a little bit more relaxed he's just riding his natural style and i don't know if that's maybe a changing of the guard like we've seen some of the older jockeys you know perhaps aren't in their absolute best vein of form at the moment so it's just giving an opportunity for guys like pike who is a very good jockey and he's ridden against the best you know obviously in hong kong before and over here now he's just actually not out of his fighting weight you know he's just riding against the best you know obviously in hong kong before and over here
Speaker 5he is one of them feels like when he's on good horse he doesn't have anything to prove anymore in victoria and and he's right it was it
Speaker 3was a good celebration uh and and he's just shown he's just showing himself not to be a great rider but it's a great personality for the game maddie i think you sort of alluded to it before and i rudely spoke over you but it was you know we're seeing a different side of him we need characters in this game and i think willie pike is fast becoming one of the great characters in the game three points to nick politis uh for those who don't know we the roosters fans we desperately we desperately want sam walker to resign they came back to the table they asked for too much and nick politis says on your bike son so there you go you got an australian halfback queensland halfback maddie that now is currently uh unlikely to turn up at the roosters what do you make of
Speaker 5that i'm sort of not i'm only across this at the end so um he's on the market as we speak
Speaker 3essentially yeah yeah i can't believe that given what we saw from him
Speaker 5last year both at club level and also at origin level i can't believe that he's on the market it's a big play it's a huge player but it shows a bit of balls as you say from a club to say you can't hold us to ransom we we've got we've got a number in our pocket we reckon you're worth and we're not prepared to pay any more than that or lots more than that whatever it is it's up to them but yeah it's i can't believe that he's on the market and in especially in an expanding nrl yeah with movement to perth with movement coming up north of the country get around the bears get into the bears west is best if if he goes
Speaker 3to the bears i might be back on the bears now we'd love to see that yeah pete off the bench you give it you give your physio slash um hooker you can get the number nine position from time to time uh any horses to follow from this or throw into the scouting report to follow from last week there jen's i'll kick off i thought jenny and roman the first has a bit of ability as she got to the front and she just looked a bit lost so i thought that's one that we could probably just follow looking forward she might just have a spell and we'll see her come back out at a later date other than that i thought the best horses are basically winning across the day central europe he'll come back what a shock he's landed in my scouting reports and look i think the rest is pretty obvious i think those horses who who won races into cleachy boulevard lazura proxima dia i think they'll keep on winning pete anything
Speaker 4to follow i think welcome to the show is absolutely flying days has a horse
Speaker 5ever moved sideways that quick i don't know it
Speaker 4was it's a staggering run i didn't actually think too much of it just watching the race live because i thought oh they've got third he probably should have gone close yep um i don't know where he goes to next time out but he's one of the great follows and that horse um to to the stable tyler donaldson aiken and i don't think i've seen a horse being able to maintain a form and so underrated at the same time for so long he's been absolutely flying for the best part of a year and a half now
Speaker 5well that was the obvious welcome to the show but i thought uh in race one uh rosarito just never got in and just stepped slow and was the widest all the way so that might be one to follow and in race 10's zalika second up third over the 1600 i thought that was a good run gets out in distance it's one over 2100 at listed level it's at two year runs as a three-year-old at 2050 for two wins so when we get zalika to 2000 plus i'll be on board for
Speaker 3todd pollard good to see tyler and todd just both coming to sydney with some of the better horses as well i think that's really good for racing it's now time for the steward's room we know how this works bryce park is going to come in he's going to give us four statements if we agree well it's upheld if we disagree it's dismissed welcome bryce more afternoon
Speaker 6guys it's uh good to be back a big week of racing but let's get straight into it the first one far too many horses are set for grand finals nowadays verse being up and ready to compete week to week upheld
Speaker 5upheld upheld okay
Speaker 6to
Speaker 5extrapolate i mean yeah it's fairly obvious isn't it yeah yeah i mean there's some trainers there's there's some trainers that that'll they'll fly by the seat of their pants and and keep the horse going uh i think kieran ma does that in in on occasions just keeps the horse up because he's getting feedback from the horse that no it wants more but sometimes they're there as we know the trainers this is the target race out there's just
Speaker 4so much money on offer at the moment so i mean it actually rewards you know just consistent performers you know running second to sixth or whatever it is you're still getting a really good paycheck just to keep things ticking over so i guess from that regard like being consistent without necessarily trying to win every race which as a punter it kind of does your head into a certain extent doesn't it
Speaker 3like lindemann's won six million dollars yeah i know it's he's he's good but he's not that good a six million dollar horse poor old char wolf didn't get didn't get a win this crap and there's been a few horses like that and i thought lady shenandoah was almost victim of that for a while but she's found her groove um and hopefully she finds it on the weekend as well but yeah keep racing him keep just sometimes because if everyone has one grand final geez they become hard to hard to win bros the much
Speaker 6maligned central european showed enough to suggest he'll win a group one in the autumn oh upheld
Speaker 5upheld yeah no and just on what chris wallace said uh at that at that lunch so that backs that up
Speaker 4i'll go dismissed just for something different he's going to bump into war woven again so people are switching channels war woven war woven will go to stud surely get you send him off yeah exactly exactly you don't want to jump the gun
Speaker 3too quick pack your nags i'm i'm strong
Speaker 6on this one the cox plate can't get back to the valley quick enough uh uphill yeah
Speaker 5great race and take nothing away from as we've already discussed it was a great win by cosmic crusader but there's nothing like the amphitheater atmosphere of the cox plate it's unique and we discussed this a little bit last week you just know surely that the committee know that that's part of the deal when you're building a new stadium you've got to have that atmosphere
Speaker 4yeah i think we all had to sort of wait and see it unfold for ourselves before we all came to the same conclusion it was a bit weird yeah it just wasn't quite right um you know i heard it was described as like an all-star mile meeting and that's kind of a good comparison no one's really sure like how important this is but it doesn't feel right bring back the valley
Speaker 6it felt like a new market day yeah yeah yeah that's what it really felt like but flemington's so big it's so big yeah you know you have 30 000 people there it feels
Speaker 5empty i've had a lot of discussions with blokes over a beer since um about oh yeah but the track's going to be ready next year but the grandstand's not yeah please don't race there without people
Speaker 6could they race with those temporary grandstands you see it a lot i don't want to go to a group
Speaker 5one race and go
Speaker 6to portalo yeah true shit that's the mind folks bryce
Speaker 3yep um i'm thinking irrespective of of the race and the race day itself sorry i'm thinking more of it i don't need any more 2000 meter flemington races completely agree yeah just the race itself was a bit disrespectful to say boring but it's just not the same it's so far different um when you're at the valley and even the new version of valley will be completely different so yeah please please let's just get back there and race and
Speaker 6the final one the melbourne cup is still australia's favorite horse race
Speaker 5upheld upheld dismissed talk to us uh anything
Speaker 4other than the bunch of slow horses going over 3200 meters but uh look for me it's getting harder and harder to do the form and get excited about it to be honest just reach out to me pete on tuesday morning i'll give
Speaker 5you the winner i agree but we're too close to it
Speaker 4yeah that's a very good point
Speaker 5the average person in the street or the the average person that goes to the races every now and again is connected to the melbourne cup still yeah yeah
Speaker 3yeah it still wins for me yeah the everest has been great the cox plate from my perspective as a race at the valley is my favorite race and probably always will be but the melbourne cup is the one that's been the stewards room bryce appreciate your time we're gonna head to a break when the greats bet they bet with better better ahead of the game what are you really gambling with for free and confidential support visit gamblinghoponline.org.au coming up next the track pattern races seven through to ten best bets and we'll go around the grounds telling me this is
Speaker 2off the road don't stand on the toe jacked on a hole ramblin' welcome back to the sydney set mcgann and
Speaker 3peter anthony as maddie campbell we're all here thanks to better ahead of the game what are you really gambling with let's go to royal ramwick for golden eagle day with a cool 10 million dollars it's a drop in the ocean for some not for us battlers though the rail true position will be racing most likely on a good four currently a soft five this afternoon i expect pete lanes one two three slightly in the middle of the road Inferior, 4-5, winnable, best going, lane 16. 10 which should very much suit those horses that can settle midfield with a little bit of cover do
Speaker 4you see it similar yeah very similar um i think the last time we were actually on rail true in a good fall was the 7th of feb so it's been a while um on that day it was a disadvantage to settle rearward but yeah certainly lanes you know between that five to seven that looked the zone but i'll just note there's a reasonably strong northeasterly forecast which will be a headwind in the straight um now i suspect that will impact the horses on pace coming around that around the turn um but if you get the right race shape it might be very well hard to to make up significant ground going into that headwind in the straight so it could be a real tricky little tactical day and we'll see how it unfolds perfect
Speaker 3just like it wasn't hard enough to find a winner i'm gonna work out which direction the wind comes from yeah giddy up race number seven the russell balding stakes uh no idea who russell is i'm sure he's a great bloke though um maddie and marco courtesy of better
Speaker 5rb was a terrific bloke um jimmy dahl is your favorite if i've got that right yes i have uh at four dollars uh headwall four dollars forty ninja five dollars so not a lot between the top three and the betting probably best backed early has been headwall then you've got grafter burners at nine uh headley grains 10 uh 13 cabalas and then you're out to 17 or more for pericles and mahuna
Speaker 320. beautiful uh let's have a look at the speed map here as i click off there and go back on cabalas drawn low has speed as does cold crush and mahuna has speed as well so those three horses drawn to some advantage albeit being slightly off the fence probably more suited and that sort of allows horses like spicy martini ninja wanarua the blades an emergency and uh a horse i don't know you're pretty keen on peter it's not joker's grin believe it or not jimmy star drawn wide but you imagine with ethan brown back aboard we might see a little bit of positivity up in
Speaker 4trip yeah i don't even think he needs to show the positivity to to go on pace or anything like that but just to give him clear air and i think ethan brown rides his horse better than anyone um you just go through his sp profile he won this race last year he basically just it holds up against every other opponent in this race doesn't it um and look i was looking at headwall he's obviously flying um does barrier three suit him i would rather be on jimmy star from the wide barrier so that's the way i'm going to end up playing this race um jimmy star is the main player and i'll save headwall in case he gets the right run through but i think there's way too many horses here that are under the odds ninja um headley grange on sp profile you just can't get him this sort of price versus jimmy star mahuna you know like there's just a lot of horses here that seem to be making up if they run to the absolute best yeah they might be able to run top two but i think if jimmy star just gets even luck and gets the right race shape he just wins
Speaker 3yeah i've marked down headwall from last start first time 1300 meters albeit did close well at 1200 and you suspect gets every chance to but we don't know it's unproven so um happy to take on headwell back towards the inside if he wins uh give him good luck to him good luck to all the owners as well i hope he gives an enormous sight for you but i think jimmy star just clearly by default pete for all the reasons that you have outlined and he's the best 1300 meter horse in the race and ethan brown i think i think he'll be pretty switched on here because there's a few horses that settle worse than midfield i think if you can just roll forward and be positive which is a pretty fair start point to be honest 300 meters get on the back of a ninja just track ninja into the race for as long as possible and then away he goes maddie how do you see the russell balding i've got
Speaker 5nothing much more i can add to that i think we're all in the same boat here with jimmy star i mean i one of my favorite horses and i'm speaking through the kick i mean i've made money off jimmy star so you keep coming back to the world but uh ethan brown being on as you said and we've seen before at 1300 meters that if you go back to say second in the kingsford smith he raced up on speed or just behind the wheel he just immediately go back as you say mickey can just find some cover somewhere and that'll do if he finds covering gets a good run uh watch for jimmy star down the outside to go bang
Speaker 3beautiful looking forward to that race so the sparks will probably fly nice and early hopefully jimmy star can run over the top race number eight well it's now group one golden eagle maddie a
Speaker 5market courtesy of better got a dollar 80 now she's alibi so a dollar 70 uh yesterday so whether you can read into that and it did touch a dollar 90 whether we're going to be able to get to that we're just trying to buy some business or not i'd have to ask the traders but um it'd be interesting to see what uh she actually starts at whether she'd get drifted out to even money but a big gap in the market to bavar at seven dollars then double figures autumn boy 10 skyhook 12 amazing journey 20 and you're sort of 20 apocalyptic and 26 or more for mr miller and decorum so she stifles the betting as she
Speaker 3should 1500 meters star point very fair star point for 10 million dollars there's not a lot of speed in the race for uh well that's on paper we'll wait and see what happens bavock you're nominated a leader and uh i'd say regal award they'll push forward and look to get sort of leaders back skyhook will come across then other than that it's kind of up for grabs pete whether an attica pushes forward or mr miller what do they do with she's an alibi we've seen you know luke nolan have her closer in the run previously she doesn't need to be you know ridiculous amount of them but uh we'll talk more into her barrier position and where she'll sit on the run a second within the law draws better this time and another horse that's probably settled with her in the run a second within the law draws better this time and another horse that's probably settled with her in the run a second within two lengths in in her career in the past up in trip so she can land a little closer not sure what you do with apocalyptic from out there do you try and roll the dice and come across or you do you just hope that they overdo it and let rip and tommy berry sort of by default is negative albeit they did sort of force his hand last week the stable believed to push him forward on the zero so interesting to sort of see how it all unfolds pete but let's chat she's an alibi the obvious um on top you know rated runner here we know how good she is she's arguably top three probably even an argument top three horses in this country she went to 2 000 meters last start we haven't seen her for 21 days she comes back to 1500 meters firstly how do you think she's going to handle that
Speaker 4i don't think it'll be an issue at all um she's a genuine star and as you said luke nolan's been pretty mindful of not getting too far back um you know which is a little bit ironic because technically speaking that's what exactly what happened last time out but you know there were circumstances around that they're clearly not going to go anywhere near that speed here um and she looks to just map perfectly behind her so i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country um and she's a genuine star and as you said luke nolan's been pretty mindful of not getting too far back um you know which is a little bit ironic because technically speaking here um and she looks to just map perfectly behind an autumn boy or something like that midfield i don't think she gets further back than worse in midfield at the absolute worst but uh i guess we've just got to keep in mind regular ward can he's not exactly the most reliable beginner and so if he is a little bit scratchy out of the gates then really just baywax just leading by default i don't think there's a whole heap of speed and i guess he's the only horse you could possibly make the argument for but nash will need to give him an absolutely perfect to the second rated bride for him to win the race so i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country i think she's going to be one of the top three horses in this country i think she's going to win um but i also just can't see who else in the market this or who else in the race the market's going to come towards i just don't see it i think it has to be her and maybe baywax the only possible
Speaker 3danger yeah maybe a leader pattern which seems highly unlikely pete for baywax would give him his best opportunity you know 1500 meters is right at his top your numbers for the golden eagle well
Speaker 4look yeah exactly right um she's alibi stands out 16 from the one baywax and then really i'm just starting to to reach for a few others i thought thought within the law was probably the best um roughy to include for your exotic c18 um she was a big flashing light there first up but you know drawn soft barrier too as you said probably needs the right run but also might be there about so she's alibi and run so could be on the back of her and get the nice trail through so i guess they're they're the three that i'd be looking towards for exotic players can you take a dollar 80 no i look i can't that's just more my predilection to trying not to back things that are odds on for the most part um i don't know what price i'd necessarily want to to be backing her but i also don't really want to back anything to beat her so it's about just a coward's way of saying i won't be betting in this race um but if i was look i'd probably be trying to take she's alibi and a couple of multis here and there that's probably the only way you can really play this race for me maddie hopefully you don't have
Speaker 3as many splinters as pete your thoughts
Speaker 5um i'll be betting in the race because it's a race um please gamble responsibly but um she's alibi i mean everything everything fits and and i'm going to the people that are doubting 2000 back to 1500 are we really qualified to doubt peter moody and kath coleman in that in that regard so anyway i'm hoping skyhook can get some cover if it comes across because i think skyhook's flying and i think that's the horse i'll probably put in for second and autumn boy who's fast becoming a haylist behind as she's alibi and these sort of horses but uh baywalk's a risk for me yeah i think
Speaker 3autumn um sorry she's an alibi wins a race i think within the law autumn boy chasing those horses down and my numbers for the race for those playing at home would be 16 one and then i'd have 18 and three there in that order when the greats bet they bet with better better ahead of the game what are you really gambling with for free and confidential support for gambling help online.org.au stay with us races 9 10 the set shot and the full sydney set coming right up welcome back to the sydney set
Speaker 2two more races at raw
Speaker 3aramic to work through race number nine will be the next of them the sydney gold cup maddie campbell race number nine stars in the rise is
Speaker 5your favorite at three dollars ninety baron gary four dollars twenty anthracite five dollars there top three at the market covalica 11 militarize still running around still looking for that win eleven dollars uh eleven dollars portland twelve dollars pounding then you got tabby times 17 travolta 20 34 dollars or more i won't mention the fluctuation and his perisher coming out changed everything.
Speaker 3Certainly did. A horse that we are keen on earlier in the day. Let's have a little look at the speed map here, Pete. Anthracite goes forward. The rest of them, I have absolutely no idea who's going to put pressure on this horse as on a seven-day backup. So you'd imagine Anthracite out in front and he'll give an enormous sight backup to a more suitable trip. And speaking of just racing horses, Pete, this horse has been up since. Where are we going to go here? That is July the 29th. Kicked off and has continued to race and didn't get a win until, look like, August and has now strung three together. So full credit to Joseph Pride and his team getting this horse up. And when you put horses into the race, Pete, they get every possible chance.
Speaker 4Yes, really well placed as well, which is probably the way to describe this race. It's not much good. Look, all the key principal chances are all coming from the same race and you can get wrapped up in SP profile and so forth. But obviously the Baron Gary did start the narrow favourite. And I thought he probably just had a few excuses there. Got too far back after restrained early. And you can definitely make a case for that horse out of Barrier 6 here on Saturday. But look, at the price, I'm going to have a tiny bit on Kovalika purely on his quick backup record. He's been on the seven-day spin three times. He hasn't done it since 2024. He's won once. He's run second once. And look, I think if he gets the absolute clean run through the inside, it's just got a little bit of different form versus the top end of the market. I think. I think he needs to be a little bit shorter, but it's not a huge confidence play. I'll put it that way.
Speaker 3Check his temperature. He just lost one round in the Melbourne Cup two years ago. Are you right, Pete?
Speaker 4No, probably not, to be honest.
Speaker 3I think it's a race in three, a clear race in three between Stars and their Eyes, Baron Gary and Anthracite. And there's dead set. There is simulations where all three of these win. So I think Baron Gary will be better suited from a position where there's not a lot of speed and can sit closer. I also think Stars and their Eyes is better suited this time around. And Anthracite, if this horse on a seven-day backup who's rock-hard fit gets the lead to himself, he might be the one leader in the day that just absolutely steals it. Matty, no betting opportunities there considering I've found the top three in the market.
Speaker 5No, you're probably right. But a little bit like Peter, I'm going with something that hasn't won for a while. Pounding hasn't won for two years almost to the day. Just like the two runs at Caulfield in the Fian and the Coongie. And third up stats are pretty good and the horse is going all right. I'm not saying it's going to win. It might be a one by three play from a bet perspective, but I'll guess it's going to win. We'll get a reasonable price to the place. So I'll bet pounding one by three.
Speaker 3The last race of the day we will cover is Benchmark 78 over the 1,100 metres. We'll just get the top of the market here, Matty.
Speaker 5Somerset Smart 550, Compensation 6, Silph 7, same price, Water Legacy, 850 Mercy Me, then $10 for Where's the Profit and Hay Street.
Speaker 3Pete's gone for a Panadol. I'll take over. Water Legacy can lead. We'll need it dry and I think that was the reason why he struggled last time. He'll go forward, high-pressure race. He gets his chance, but I'm with Somerset Smart here, Pete. I think his rising talent comes out of a town with 1,000 metre Benchmark 82 where he did sit wide, but he put them to the sword. Hadn't really seen the best of him since his Corindai win. I know, lo and behold, Corindai, Class 1, but I think Sue Grylls has got a really talented galloper on her hands here and we're getting a decent price to find out. Some of the figures he's put up are good. You go back and watch them visually, it looks good. 54.5 kilos, high-pressure race, sort of just sits. I would say sixth in run, gets to the best going and rips home and can beat them. Are you taking me on or have you got a different thought?
Speaker 4I don't really have much thoughts about this race, to be honest. I thought the speed map was impossible. There was about eight horses that could lead this and look, in the end, I've got the profile runner of Sylph again, which I was a bit disappointed with the run last time out, but it just looks a very suitable map potentially if there is all this speed on paper, but there's so much obvious speed that maybe they just find their positions really easily and then they just hack along. So look, that's the runner. I'm looking at, but also dual nominated on this card. So it's a bit frustrating, to be honest. Any additions, Matty?
Speaker 5I had those two on top, but I put down all eight in quaddie. That was my notes. So I'm having eight in the quaddie because it's very tough.
Speaker 3Stick fat with me, lads. We'll be right here. I think Somerton Smart is a decent enough horse. Two horses to run top two. That is a set shot. Sydney set, set shot. Go to the bed, are up to get involved. Last week, we got the job done somehow. Go, go, linebacker went bang, bang, ran second. That's all we need to do because that is top two. Betting, Perisher, race five, number two, and race seven, number one, Jimmy Star. Both those horses to run top two. Head to the bet, are up to get involved. This is the Sydney set. When the greats bet, they bet with better. Better ahead of the game. What are you really gambling with? Stay with us. The full Sydney set. We'll go down to Flemington, have a chat. All things Melbourne Racing, Coolmore, Derby, Empiros. Welcome back to the Sydney set. Our man Tommy Papley is in New York, but he's keen to get involved. He'll be back next week. Let's hear what have you got for us for this weekend, Paps.
Speaker 7Into Randwick, just in New York City. Nice little view, yeah, yep. We're going to Randwick, of course. Race three, number eight, just response. First up, very good last prep. Went to Scone, was very, very good there when they had that Scone Cup. Runs anywhere near that run. Be a huge chance. Tried well. Has had three trials into this. So he's ready to fire first up. So race three, number eight, just response. Race five, number 12, Cooley Bar. And go and watch this horse with Snack back first up. J-Mac on, trial in between. Hit the line very nicely first up. And that trial in between just got some fitness on it now. 2,000 metres. Sienna Grimer jumps aboard, but maps beautifully wide to inside jaw. 2,000 metre suits get on each way. Race six, number four, beside the ocean. Just got to be on this horse because if it wins, it'd be sick, man. Ganno would be $14 that you can get with better. I'll be taking that. Just hopefully we get the brakes at the right time. Gets an inside draw from barrier six with heaps of speed outside. So it'll be worse in midfield, but, jeez, I've just got to be on. Just had no luck this prep. And pray Sienna Grimer jumps aboard and gets the job done. Race nine, number nine, my best of the day. Stars in their eyes. Was up the inferior lanes against Baron Gary last day. But gets three kilos off Baron Gary now. Maps beautifully. I think, yeah, I think that's a great bet. One of my best bets of the day. So they're the four for you. Tune in to the Sydney set this week. Ganno, Matty and Pete Anthonis are killing it. So tune in.
Speaker 3Cheers. There he is, Tommy Papley, giving us his best bets. Let's go to the fourth Sydney set. Race one, number seven, Donatello. Race five, number two, Perisher. Race seven. Number one, Jimmy Starr. And race 10, number 14, Summerton Smart. Love the ambience back there. You can hear the sirens in the background there, Matty, in New York City.
Speaker 5Oh, you know, you're a punter. If you're in New York City, you're still doing the form in Sydney. You know, you're going for life.
Speaker 3All right, Jets. We've got about a minute and a half to go through our plays for the Cornwall. Matty, kick us off.
Speaker 5I'll go to Tono Glow. Been down the straight twice before. I think that's a bonus. But we don't know what sort of track we're going to have just yet.
Speaker 4Pete? Yeah, it is tricky, isn't it, in that regard? Look, I actually don't have a track. I don't have an opinion in the Cornwall as a result, which is, yeah, I just can't wait to see the race. But I don't really want to be betting into it. I think it's impossible.
Speaker 3I'm blindly brave. I think St. Goddard's the horse that has the right form, the war woven form. So that's an enormous tick, as we spoke on earlier. I think the 1,400-meter run back to 1,200 meters down the Flemington Straight, which is a testing 1,200, is a massive tick. Blinkers first time. Great signs of intent. And the jump out down the straight looked pretty good to me. He has to do it first time, but I suspect he will. Full brother to Switzerland. Switzerland as well, who was pretty dominant down the straight. So St. Goddard on top. The Empire Rose, Lady Shenandoah for me.
Speaker 4Pete, I can't see how she loses, to be honest.
Speaker 5Three out of three. Great win in the Turek, wasn't it?
Speaker 3Any other plays, Flemington lads? Or we'll go best bets around the grounds.
Speaker 5Matty? Well, at Carbine Club Race 1, Chris Waller loves winning this race. Horses like Aleana, Panova, Fangirl. He's got Unhinged and the Roaring Sun. Make sure you bet Chris Waller in the first at Flemington.
Speaker 3That's fair enough as well. I'll bet them both. I'm going to bet them both. I'll bet them both. Yeah, on Monday. So luckily enough. So something. We'll give them both tricks, Matty. Unhinged was my best bet, saving the Roaring Sun. I think it's a great play, Pete.
Speaker 4I actually want to back one horse who's dual nominated, although he's second emergency in Race 5, but that's King Zephyr. I really think this horse deserves to be shorter than whichever race he ends up in. We'll get back. But I actually thought his run down the straight first up was a little hidden one. So King Zephyr each way is one of my better plays on the card.
Speaker 3That's been the Sydney set, gents. Thank you very much. Pete, appreciate you stepping in and helping us out. Look forward to catching up with you all next week. Good on you, gents. Cheers, Gunnar. Thanks, Gunnar.
