Stumblin'

The podcast reflects on the dynamics of a recent episode, emphasizing the absence of a true "hard out" in the hosting process, where Andy’s relaxed, rolling approach to the show led to feelings of disconnection among listeners. The conversation delves into the behind-the-scenes realities of filmmaking, highlighting the stress, pressure, and lack of fun that contrast with the lighthearted, creative energy of the podcast. A major highlight is the "Stumbling" sketch, where Paul Rudd’s physical comedy and a real hand injury during filming underscore the dedication and spontaneity of SNL production. The episode also celebrates a memorable musical guest appearance by Paul McCartney, featuring his performance of "Berlin" and "A Day in the Life," with humorous and heartfelt anecdotes from the crew. The group shares a joyful, chaotic moment with the K-truck, describing it as a "tiny harmonica of cars" that brings laughter and connection. While some segments lack strong laughs, the podcast values authenticity, emotional resonance, and the unique chemistry of its members. The episode ultimately celebrates friendship, creativity, and the absurdity of live comedy, reinforcing the idea that genuine connection and spontaneity are more important than polished, predictable moments.

we got a hard out and and he's gonna take off at a certain point what do we think about this is like podcast etiquette being last one to join first one to say you got a hard out like where does that I think it depends on if you offered up other times that were rejected by your I think I think that's what you called gee shit yeah thank you this is very disappointing Andy because a lot of people were commenting the last episode and again you clearly didn't have a hard out because you had no respect for anyone's out yeah mine wasn't even a hard out I just sort of had a rolling soft out and you still wouldn't let me go and my take was that you are away from your family shooting a movie and you're finding a lot of connection in the pod I think we're filling a gap that your family is not present to provide you is that right Andy I think everyone is as relaxed as their situation yeah and I think it's a rolling situation can I tell you guys a lesson that I've really learned from the three of you it needed the three of you because I really didn't have a movie career um and what I've learned from the three of you even working on hot rod you know where I was on a movie all three over there is that movies are not fun to make and it's not fun to be around people who are making movies I think that's accurate that's the pre-pro part so fun to watch movies are so fun to watch especially the ones you guys make but my goodness like you know I you're a muse stop I said to Andy like where are you gonna be on Tuesday you're gonna be on set I'll stop by and it's just like I mean Andy loves me you guys know how much he loves me and just a real cold-shouldered the idea of me stopping it was almost like Seth when you invite someone to a Broadway show and then your reaction to that for me uh is how you felt like rejected when I was like hey do you want to go see this Broadway show and you were like no exclamation point are you sure no I said what the show was no yeah like that's kind of how you felt right yeah but visiting a movie set is also you always think you want to do it like that's so cool they're shooting here let's go and you get there and within 10 minutes you're like all right I'm just at somebody's work and it's really boring so everyone's working so hard and so stressed out and you never have enough money no matter how much money you have and you're always racing against time that's interesting oh okay yeah money if I bring a suitcase full of cash it's also this movie isn't like a goofy loose set yeah it's like a little bit more serious and can I can I push back on that when I visited Andy and had lunch with him it was lovely and you know yeah come have lunch with me yeah I'm also producing and there's like a million fires to put out at lunch every day I don't know what to tell you it sucks other actual fires but the gratitude for getting to do it the privilege Andy it's an honor and a privilege and I count my lucky stars every day but it's not a like bro hang vibe Andy skip the media training this is what I want to share with our listeners which is not something maybe they know especially you know oh my god Andy Samberg like if you're ever for example at a charity auction and one of the items is stop by set for a movie that's just throwing I don't care how good a cause it is you're just throwing that money away when we were shooting pop star people would swing by all the time and it was perfect because it's just like joke bag goof vibe you want a party atmosphere yeah it just depends on the project uh but it's a very seminal time for uh I don't even know if I'm using that word right but it's uh 10th anniversary of pop star 25th anniversary of wet hot American summer and I had Rudd on the show and then I also interviewed Rudd at the Tribeca film festival like for a panel for Rudd and we talked a lot about wet hot which it does seem like that was genuinely as fun to make as it was to watch because it was like all dudes the same age who were hanging out at they were basically at camp while they were making a movie about camp yes you can tell you can tell that that one I think is uh yeah exactly that he shared this uh story so it was in a public setting and it makes me laugh so hard every time I've heard Paul say it which is that David Hyde Pierce who was like by far the biggest star in that movie he showed up like a few weeks late and they were basically every night they were like partying in this common area and staying up till all hours despite the fact they were super early call times and the first time they met David Hyde Pierce he walked into like a raging party at like two in the morning and when he did Rudd said it was like a record scratch moment where everybody got quiet and then Ken Marino said uh Frasier but then also that David Hyde Pierce was just uh coming down to hang it was like the most fun guy in the world he was not he was not in any way shape or form uh arriving with uh with Frasier Frasier energy um because somebody's got a heart out and we're desperate to get to stumbling can I do a little uh clean up from from last week yes yeah if you could tell me everything that happened last week because I didn't listen that'd be great what we talked about the bitch stole my line what was x versus sever the full title ballistic ballistic colon x versus oh that's right oh yeah so we're talking about colon movies um batman v superman colon dawn of justice uh sicario colon day of the soldado right and someone and again didn't know work on the research someone did say in the comments that I guess it was it was titled day of the soldado and then maybe late in the game they were like let's remind everybody this is a sicario yeah that one is fascinating because sicario is like a very classy movie yeah you don't usually do a colon title for that kind of a movie you mean it was you're surprised not just sicario too yeah um this one is interesting to me it's dragon wars colon d war dragon wars colon capital d hyphen war I don't know dragon wars it sounds like something I would watch does anyone know what the d stands for oh you know what it stands for your that seems like that seems like they're using the colon as an aka it's like I don't know what if it's dramamine though like and it's about you know nausea yeah I mean if it's not dragon again it's it's really funny dragon wars colon dragon wars this is this is a I don't know this movie but it's korean so this is maybe lost in translation yeah but pretty great yeah oh and it is a game because dragon wars is a role-playing game it does bring to mind bad lieutenant port of call new orleans new orleans was which also uh quaid sent in because wasn't the first bad lieutenant also kind of an art film in its way yeah but then that was like best of verner herzog the second one is certainly a herzog make no mistake we're big port of call new orleans new orleans is the iguana it's peak nicholas cage and the more I by the way can I just say nicholas cage did the greatest interview in the new york times in 2019 he ran it back with the same interviewer just recently doing spider-man noir press and this guy is I think it's david marchese I gotta check though hold on uh let me check uh just do yourself a favor jesus christ no no just leave that no no do both do yourself a favor it's david marchese and uh he does back-to-back uh two of the greatest interviews of nicholas cage and nicholas cage he is not ever doing things without it being a choice and that's what's so great about port of call new orleans it is he's just do you remember the scene where he's threatening a woman with her oxygen tank or he's threatening her son he like basically like cinches her oxygen tank in an old age home I don't remember I need to re-watch this movie the same and you know uh our buddy um Dieter von Kuntz rest in peace Val Kilmer yeah all right yeah they're fucking killing it together yeah Dieter von Kuntz it's really bad I remember being uh under the influence watching that movie and being hugely entertained it was one of the it's one of the few movies we all watched together in snl and it was just that's right yeah at joe's house no we watched it at the in the writers literally in the right oh that's right we were like we gotta watch this and it was like a monday at like 3 p.m so we were something so we were just like no one's writing right now anyways we're just gonna put it on and a bunch of people came and sat down and started watching it so we were just drinking yeah I think it might have been a monday night because we were drinking yeah so it couldn't have been uh but it was the most because we did not do that often there was the beowulf screaming jesus the beowulf screening and then port of call new orleans anyway but that wasn't at snl of course no no that was in a proper theater but that was everybody well the first time yeah uh legends of the guardians colon the owls of gahooly oh yeah we know about the gahooly g-a apostrophe h-o-o-l-e zack snyder animated is it not gahoole it's we always said gahoole but I don't know if that's it might be gahoole yeah it's like a world war ii nazi movie but starring owls is it really in a very very clear allegory zack snyder directing animation right yeah oh my gosh and it was in 3d and you could get the 3d blu-ray and watch it at home on your 3d tv right when that was a thing and so it was in three whole derfs we all watched it in 3d together at my house oh you you watched owls of gahooly yeah that's why we know it so well and what was your takeaway of that one like was it is it is it a good one I don't remember these are all like 15 years ago now but we had fun just saying the owls of gahooly and cheersing our drinks and watching these owls talk and like fly out of the tv towards your face I remember this I could be wrong I remember going into it being like this is going to be so crazy and funny and then like halfway through being like this is slightly too good to be funny yeah it was it was on the edge it was yeah there were moments and there are like fascist owls taking over and they're like mounting a rebellion against them well that part was good and it also just looks fucking amazing like you can't front on the lighting it's just so good it was the alchemy of portico new orleans was exactly the movie i think we all wanted it to be from start to finish it exceeds expectation yeah i mean look at the detailing on this mask yep that's straight out of gahool you know i mean that's the gahoolian craftsmanship uh this really made me laugh somebody said 15 years ago they heard colin hanks on a podcast refer to his dad tom hanks movie bridge of spies as spy bridge colon bridge of spies original title i'm gonna see colin today guys oh god tell him you got a shout out for his and well confirm confirm he i'm actually gonna i'm gonna see both of them so i can also hopefully i'll congratulate him in front of his dad so that his dad can go you called it what how dare you boy uh multiple quades of course pointed out pop star colon never stop never stopping but of course that's yeah that's that doesn't count because that's comedy correct if it's comedy it does not count if it's intentionally funny like don't be a menace to south central while drinking your juice in the hood or something right yeah yeah every naked gun movie had one yeah um just fyi so when you miss your arm it's a lot of colon stuff yeah no no i mean i do i do wish we had done the the mcgruber 2 one i i thought that was really good what was it again it was mcgruber 2 colon hawaiian gold colon the search for hawaiian gold two columns it is very funny but i just want to time check uh 14 minutes first mcgruber reference and we're not even done with cleaning up um so you're suggesting mcgruber's yorm's new bay area yeah i'm from the bay so i don't even notice him talk about me really i'm from the bay i also did mcgruber yeah hey what's up i'm from the bay mcgruber colon mcgruber colon curly's gold and over your dead body also is available on vod guys well i thought you had left that behind in the press cycle no it's vod now you can get it on video on demand guys you can watch it at home do yourself a flavor do yourself it's the best way to watch it guys i know we said the theaters but now it's vod it's actually better on vod do yourself a favor do yourself a favor oh there's another one we're back exclamation point a dinosaur story that's weird that's now that's genuinely now two sentences because you're like who's back and then the second half answers a question you asked which is nice we're back with an exclamation point a dinosaur story that can't be real yeah 1993 i like that though because most of these aren't necessary that first one is like who oh wow that really made me laugh oh yeah interesting fact about that because they didn't do want to do exclamation point colon there's no colon i guess it's two sentences yeah the first sentence is we're back and the second sentence is a dinosaur it's a dinosaur's story yeah it's a dinosaur oh it's not a dinosaur story this is his story i bet they had a lot of arguments about grammar on that one it's one dinosaur story there's multiple dinosaurs on the cover but it's only one of their stories one of them is telling you if you guess which one or it's about one of them truly the protagonist the protagasaur protagasaur we talked about we talked about uh horseplay and andy's wonderful robert smith from the cure and horseplay um we've often also talking talking what the fuck is wrong with me we've also talked about shrooming bro be real you shrooming i thought we were doing an animated beowulf rewatch so i took some shrooms i forgot so do not recommend do not recommend um robert smith we have always talked about when um a sketch has music you can't clear it does not repeat and so uh multiple people said oh my god i've seen that episode on peacock before and at good nights andy's dressed like robert smith from the cure with no context oh interesting because horseplay doesn't air and they have they've taken it out of the repeat so because they didn't want to pay for all the song clearance yeah so it's just even though we're weird howling it i guess not huh more than one person said it so there you go yum yum you won't call the nbc lawyers call it you won't call it you got right up on them uh hey you're uh you're light and light keeve is called a panache in france oh that's nice wait explain this what is this i missed this this is a shandy this is a beer with like a sparkling lemonade oh it is um is a panache oh wait what's a what's a michelada what's isn't that the same thing a michelada is a beer with a little bit of lime juice and often and a little tomato juice and a little hot sauce tomato juice yeah that's a lot of tomato juice or sometimes clam juice by the way guys we're into june it's officially the season for summertime specials oh yeah bing bong what's a summertime special as a knicks fan it was jack it was like makers are jack and it was seven up and a bunch of fresh lime juice is that right little key limes specifically yeah squeezing in little key limes yeah refreshing as fuck do yourself a favor do yourself a flavor do yourself a favor neighbor would you buy a smaller than a normal size lemon squeezer to squeeze your little key limes do you have like a little maybe just cut them in half hand squeeze them and dump the whole thing in the drink so you gotta manipulate that you gotta be poolside though you gotta be poolside the fact that you guys did that unironically to enjoy it and it also sounds like something connor for real would have can we name drop where we were doing it the most at drew carey's house yeah by the pool drew drew was never yeah drew carey was not there this is a we should give credit where it's dude jeff davis is the uh originator of this drink as far as i know oh really and he was the one that introduced all of us to it and he would house it for drew carey yeah when drew carey was out of town and we would just go up to the hollywood hills and swim in his pool this is all pre-snl it was great it was a great time uh and there was also another name for the drink but we can cut this part out but it was called the it was called that shit you can just bleep it yeah just leave it i'll have to guess but just just bleep the and see if people oh my god sure all right andy let's see let's see if i can get you to get this all right andy you go to a seafood restaurant sometimes right absolutely and uh maybe you order the lobster and uh what do they give you when you order the lobster you don't want to get it because you don't want to get on your nice clothes oh a bib yeah okay but like sometimes don't you feel bad for the other people at seafood restaurants they're maybe not ordering lobster but they also don't want to spill on their nice clothes you know if they're ordering uh halibut say or maybe the cod or or or maybe the tuna uh what would you recommend for a person eating the tuna who didn't want to get anything maybe like a a bib for tuna oh it was a long walk but it was really really couldn't have been more worth it thank you how did i not see it coming well it was a long walk but you know what it's consistent because i couldn't remember last week either yeah he wove around some trees and then he got back on the path and so you mean java's assistant yeah java's assistant uh it was also recommended that if jeremy and alan white could play uh a hut they were saying like sudeikis doing new job of the hut and every time he tries to get bib for tuna's attention he says bib like he said babe and two assholes job is coming salacious crumb is doing the wig part by the way never has a character's name been more describing that character salacious crumb it's almost like he let the muppet characters get named by the muppet people i'll do bib for tuna you name her whatever you want they're like all right we're gonna give him a real fraggle rock name uh another thing you missed your arm was i said because i've been trapped into it by a merry fuck kill question i said that i would fucking ewok right as alexi walked past yeah and uh what do you think her reaction would be well a bunch of people said based on the fact that like she had no reaction is that maybe she wasn't surprised by this at all and i think i realized the reason which is when i when i get frisky andy this one's for you andy andy bib bib when i get frisky i do ask for a little yub nub um wait i looked up the spelling of salacious crumb and the first thing i found was artwork depicting salacious crumb on the red carpet at the met gala oh yeah oh that's like dope oh that's salacious crumb yeah um that's a great fucking i would want that on a wall honestly it's uh at karen cast i don't know what that is i hope that they're not racist probably a bunch of fascist owls uh i said uh i stepped on my dick and said uh daily planet when we're talking about spider-man uh peter parker works at the daily bugle j jonah jameson sorry for that everybody for a guy who like knows a lot about comic books superman is that the uh yeah yeah yeah yeah superman's the planet oh and both those publications come out uh weekly or no they both tanked they don't they don't make them anymore print is dead guys they both they both shifted to online digital video digital video uh they're like news vlogs now yeah but they have a and worlds kind of like competitive it's mostly word game stuff I also said that Newman died in the port-a-potty in Jurassic Park that's incorrect he died when the cute little dinosaur spit acid on his face yeah he's in the storm he's falling all over the place you look like a nice little one yeah there you go that's good this is very decent Newman we're really closing in on me wrapping up comments but it's always worth mentioning that someone wrote in been looking forward to the I just had sex episode since the podcast started now that we're two shorts away I'm so excited that I only have to wait eight more weeks that's true well we have a lot of cleanup we also haven't even done the back half of turtleneck and chain yet no so let's do that first well let's do stumbling Rudd's back and it's stumbling speaking of shorts that have music issues so they're hard to find but I did just google it for anybody listening here that wants to watch it you can find it if you google it there's somebody has it on Instagram it comes up right away and then there's a live from New York reddit that's the one we're gonna watch when we watch it that I just found you're trying to get the Instagram person sued Keeve un-fucking-real well yeah it's almost like we want people to check it out but there's no real way to clump it yeah you don't have to clump this one but you can find it just not through normal channels maybe that's nice for our listeners not to have the pressure of feeling they're clumping something you can just watch it for pleasure yeah take a week off from like clumping clump hunt yeah dump the clump dump the clump oh by the way you know obviously we added a bunch of tags to last week's episode yeah oh right someone said what is this this is turning into the Qualtons Jesus I wish I hadn't laughed I don't know I mean we we support a lot of great jokes I think it's good every now and then to show people we're not just delighted by everything it's not just blind positivity yeah you're going to have to use a little bit of Gahoolian craftsmanship if you want I get detailed really forged that shit that was not are you saying that was not that was not a Gahoolan one it was not a Gahoolan one and he's back Seth you're on fire today but like not the way not with the regular words yeah I've also missaid words like talked and had okay so Stumblin talk us through it where do we begin with old with old Stumblin correct me if I'm wrong I believe this was another thing where I had like the first line of it written down in my notes app what was the line well in the original nine to five it's stumble out of bed right is the first line yeah let's confirm that I was right all along I believe she stumbles to the kitchen and pours herself a cup of morning ambition cup of ambition I don't know is it morning I think it's just you wouldn't say morning yeah you can it's tumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen gotcha and that is something I found out after we had completed the whole short that's my favorite shit just like oh and we were wrong and what did she pour herself pour myself a cup of ambition obviously that I knew but I think I had flip-flopped them I thought it was stumble out of bed and I tumble to the kitchen but it's actually like the whole short should have been called Tumbling so it was another just like too many times joke of like what if instead of being the song nine to five it was just she just kept stumbling right everywhere and all the things she did Andy nobody on this pod can correct you if you're wrong because none of us were there at the inception it's December 11th 2010 and my wife is pregnant and due in like a week or two in 16 days was the actual due date and I think she had made a deal with me like hey in December when I'm gonna be that pregnant can you not do the show all the time and I had started not doing the show so I wasn't there at the beginning of the week and then I did come in towards the end of the week if you're having a memory of me on set I was there is this John Solomon yes I have a voice notes from John Solomon and from Mr. Paul Rudd about it fantastic I have not listened so were you living in New York City though Keeve still yes yes okay gotcha so you weren't like flying in you were just like late in the week no no our first daughter was born in New York City oh this is the first one and then where Yoram where were you you were gone from the show in Africa I was probably in Africa he's saying that like it's a joke but around here is when you went to Kenya is this true yeah yeah I think so I'll do my own part about that it's fine just keep okay great it's fine it's a whole thing we should actually talk about that one but you should do the slightest search of your emails to find out when you actually did it yeah that's fair but yeah but Yoram's still off so you and Solomon did it and then I'll chime in when I joined if you get to that point well first off my apologies John Solomon I didn't even fucking remember that this is one we did together but now that you've said it Keev I remember when you came in later we were having an issue because there was like blank spots in the song and it was idling and it felt lame and you were like you should add a big stumbling at the end of each section and put a big graphic on the screen and it did make it have a lot better energy was that during editing during edit yeah interesting good job Keev okay so that was the idea I had then that it was me and it would just as exactly what you would think like let's try and think of as many like weird funny scenarios that you could be stumbling through and I knew Rudd would be funny doing the stumbling because his physical comedy is so good that's where I wanted to I know not necessarily all your ideas were dependent on who the host was but this is a perfect person for stumbling correct he's so good at doing physical performance that is both sarcastic and grounded at the same time you know what I mean since we were just talking about Wet Hot yeah his performance in Wet Hot is fucking phenomenal first of all him talking about his journal don't you mean your journal all time is incredible but his his like flipping his body around in exactly the way that Andy just described that petulant moment of putting your what is it your fork his dishes away I said it to him the other day in front of a bunch of people which is I think the first time I saw Rudd was in Cider House Rules so I saw him in a drama first and then when he was in Wet Hot when I first saw him on screen I'm like this dude's not cause those I knew a lot of those people from Chicago already as being and like you know from Upright Citizens Brigade on television I'm like what's this dude doing with them and then by the end of that scene I'm like oh he's that he's a comedy icon it's one of the great I don't know introductions to a character I've ever seen reminds me a little bit of the introduction to Mary in O'Mary the petulance and physicality of it throwing yourself against your own petulance yeah it's really really funny and fun to watch had he already been in Stella shorts and stuff by the time Wet Hot came out I can't remember which came first I don't think so only because he just told me the story he had worked with Zach Orth who knew those dudes in Romeo and Juliet and then he like went and saw those guys those state guys do a show and David Wayne basically went up to him and was like hey we're trying to get money for this movie would you be interested in like reading a part for it so I think Wet Hot was his introduction to that world amazing hell of a hell of an intro I saw Wet Hot American Summer at Sundance when it premiered god damn and then we went to Westwood the day it came out and saw it at the one theater it was showing in LA was all of his first off drama stuff like he's so fucking funny that it's surprising Clueless was his first big thing so yeah and that was more like but he was not yeah he was he was a and he's not being that funny he's being like charming yeah right I guess he's not the best friend he's the right but in Clueless I think we can all agree there's a certain level of Cahoolian craftsmanship certainly yeah I knew it wasn't going to be worth it but no they did you're doing one with owls called Cahooless that was a Cahoolan 2 there's so many more things that need to hit the glossary now oh I know this might be where he's like I'm out on the glossary these do not deserve to be written down they're enjoying it too much Cahoolian craftsmanship when something is made with an attention to detail and look just you know what do yourself a favor gahooogle the helmet that I looked at so many moments where I'm like what is this podcast no one knows no one knows and no one cares you know no one cares that's what's so cool about it it's just free it's just free oh my god we just do what we want yep open your mind quids alright so we've got that heart out just bearing down on us yeah oh man can't wait we all can't wait well a little more preamble it was very exciting when we asked Wig if she had a Dolly Parton because we were like oh you know who we should ask is Wig because we were like how are we going to do the song part and then she was like I don't think so and we were like well just try and then she did it and we were like of course it's like really good yeah have we even mentioned that Paul McCartney is the musical guest and will appear in this short not yet I know we've also talked about Paul Rudd's bar in his basement but he has a awesome cue card of promos of I'm Paul Rudd and I'm hosting this week with Paul McCartney which is has that up on his wall but not the painting from Everyone's a Critic everyone was pretty geeked about Paul McCartney all week yeah I mean I don't want to get ahead of ourselves but he came on it was already so crazy and then like halfway through the week it became clear he was going to do A Day in the Life which he had never performed before and it was like the anniversary of John Lennon's passing so it was this huge deal and And I think probably a lot of people are on the same page as me that that's It's one of, if not their favorite Beatles songs. So it was so crazy to get to see that. He did that at the end of the episode. And didn't he do Jet and Band on the Run as well? I think so. It was crazy. What a great show. So you're saying he did Jet, Band on the Run, Day in the Life, and Stumblin'? Wow. That's actually a fucking trifecta right there. Technically, yes. He did a tiny harmonica solo, which we'll see in one second. He was really into his tiny harmonica at this time. I believe there's lots of. It's so cartoonishly little. You would watch this short thinking it's our bit that we made him do. But it was his bit that he was doing everywhere. Yeah. I know we've established the way that John Solomon talks. I do remember him. I was like, oh my God, McCartney's in it? He's like, yeah, he's going to play his tiny harmonica. And I'm like, oh my God, that's so funny. He's like, nope, it's his. Because I definitely thought it was a bit that you guys had put in. Well, you guys made it into one. You'll see. So, Andy. Yes. Akiva, sir. I got called in. I directed the Paul McCartney segments. Oh, yeah. Because Lorne. Couldn't have somebody like Solomon. So, John Solomon is a great director in his own right, but had not directed very much at all at the show and was kind of just graduating into taking over directing on certain things. Yeah. And so, with Andy there. But he's taller than you. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And much more manly. But the problem was he was so tall it made harmonica look even smaller. He is a nice looking guy. I'm not saying you're not. No, he's a very handsome. Taller than you. Classic man. Yeah. Just dad. Ripped abs. We've talked about him as just dad. And you think Lorne didn't want McCartney to spend time with people more handsome than Lorne. That was the main thing. Yeah. Get him out of there. He's like, Paul Rudd's fine. You think Akiva's not more handsome than Lorne? I think Lorne might not think that. I think that. Oh, wow. Young Lorne. Oh, wow. Maya in his dock calls out that he's a cutie. So, anyways, Lorne did call me and was like, I know you're at home this week, but can you actually come in and do the segment with Paul McCartney with the guys? Yeah. You were like, oh, maybe. Who dat? Yeah. Did he do that classic Lorne thing, too? Where he was like, come on, please. Come on, Keith. Come on. There's a whole segment in the Lorne doc that's now on Peacock where everyone's doing their Lorne impression and everyone's just like, oh. Oh, come on. Come on. Do the shorty one. And then it goes to, like, Dana and he does his, come on. And then it goes to Mark McKinney and he's like, oh, no. Come on. Oh, I got a fucking paper cut. Ew, it's thick. I don't have any money. I'm going to get shut down by the studio. Why didn't anybody wash the fish tank? Oh, my God. This popcorn's chewy. Everyone's got a Lorne. It was either in too long or not in long enough. I don't know which one, but it's chewy. Everyone does Lorne. That's one of the things. Make it again. What is this, fucking Lowry salt? All right. Should I hit it? Yeah. Yes, please. Yes, please. This is so you, Andy. Yes. This is full-on Muppet mode. This is Muppet-tastic. Yeah, we're already almost a minute in, and I can already be like, it's fine. I have a smile on my face. It's never going to take itself to another level. It's just a sort of mood piece. It's a little pleased with itself, but it's also kind of fun. By the way, fucking shout-out Wig again, because holy shit, I thought it was her for a second. If you hadn't said it, I would not have known. Isn't it crazy? It's crazy. It's so good. It's so good. Also, you do feel like somebody who wants to be stumbling at all times. I feel like it is your natural gaze. There's a moment where you guys stumble and make a turn where it actually feels like it's physically difficult for you to stumble and hit that corner of the sidewalk and go another direction. Well, we were giggling about doing that, because it was so stupid. Also, obviously, shout-out Mario Batali. Shout it out. He was in there. He swung by. Already, though, a lyric where I was like, oh, that's a dud. Stumbled past my good old friend, and it's just super open and empty on both sides. Musically, we hung Wig out to dry there and should have done better. All right, let's keep going. Stumbled past a guy putting on his first lipstick. Stumbled past a girl with a big bowl of Bisquick. Stumbled past three different kinds of bears. Stumbled past the elevator. Stumbled down the nasty floor. So, three types of bears I stand by. Good joke. Yep. Little tidbit, and I'm sure Rudd will remember this. First take he did of the whole shoot, since we were already in the building, was stumble past the elevator. First take, first stumble past the elevator. He sliced. His hand open on the, like, metal siding of the elevator door frame. And he was like, we're like, all right, add action. He's like, simple, simple. Oh, fuck. Just, like, pouring blood down his arm. I remember me and Sullivan being, and by the way, I didn't even remember Sullivan did it until ten minutes ago, but I do remember us looking at each other and being like, oh, no. And being like, do you want to bail? To Paul. And he was like, no, no, of course not. Because, of course, he's not. Because he's the best. But I felt so bad immediately, so guilty. The way he gets hurt, though, did you think it was a joke for a second? Because he plays that really well. No, because there was just so much blood. Ah, I got you. Shit. You can't improv past the blood. All right. The elevator stumbled down the nasty floor of stairs. Walking in slow motion, walking in slow motion. Ooh, walking in slow motion, walking in slow motion. Great just for this, even if it was just for this. I had forgotten that that's what we did, and it's a different song. Yeah, that's another reason this is not on the repeats. Yes. But God. That's great, though. That's fucking great. Is Berlin the name of the group that sings that? I believe so, yeah. It's the Top Gun song. He's saying what? Gotcha. That's why they're walking in slow motion. Which is the first line of Take My Hand. Take My Breath Away. Yeah. Which is the song in Top Gun where they're silhouetted kissing, but you can see their tongues. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They don't walk, though, famously in that line. So it was nice to actually put the lyrics there. It's really funny and cool that he did that, and it's really great that it then goes to Tiny Harmonica. Hang on. This is, again, a whole, this is a shot of adrenaline right as you need this. But also, it's not walking in slow motion. It's not? No. It's watching every motion. Oh, is it? What? Yeah. But. That's fine. Did you think it was walking in slow motion? Akiva, yes. Yeah, there's a lot of misfires. That's how little due diligence was going down here. Yeah, didn't even bother listening to the song once. You have to remember, this is 2010. You couldn't gahooogle stuff. Yeah, you couldn't just gahooogle willy-nilly. Yeah, you could. There's also a whole research department at SNL would have pulled it up for you. Yeah, then you got to send them out. They didn't have time for that. You guys had left, you know? That's true. This is what fucking. This is what fucking art is, dude. Yeah. It's how art becomes art. Anyway, that made me laugh, seeing that again. I'm going to watch him again. He's in like a kind of a pirate shirt. Mm-hmm. Also enjoying B and Paul, both Paul Rudd, both doing the smile without the eyes face while walking in slow motion. It's like a silky pirate shirt. It's also just nice hearing Paul McCartney sing. He sounds like Paul McCartney. He's good. Yeah, he's good. Yeah, he's all right. Yeah. That might just be his wardrobe. Oh, no, you're wearing it, too. Yeah. Look at Rudd's face. Tiny harmonica solo. Wait, when you said that might just be his wardrobe, I thought you meant like he just brought that set. Well, I meant like maybe his people. Those are just his clothes. Yeah, no, I got it, I got it. It looks kind of cool, so I thought, oh, maybe that's like what the vibe of him at this moment in 2010 was. I don't know. Oh, you did mean that. Okay, great. Yeah. No, I did. Like, it's possible that that's what he was wearing for the show. But then it matches what we're wearing as the giveaway. Yeah, and then I was like, man. Intentionality. Yeah, here we go. You think he was like, you turned my tiny harmonica into a joke, you motherfuckers. It was serious. No, I think he was just psyched to be doing it. Yeah, he was. It was delightful. Okay, really look at Rudd on this one. I mean, look how happy he is to do it. Oh, my God, his ass is just, it's such a bummer. And then presents the tiny harmonica at the end. It's really something. He knows it's funny. Yeah, that's great. He was happy that it was getting its moment. ♪ Here, here ♪ I do wish that Wig had come in for that last note. Great call. Would have been good. Also, we had a different shot planned for every single one of those last setups, and we just did not have the time. Right, so you put them all in a hallway. To do them all. So it ended up being like, we'll just do them all in a one-er, and that's why there's little moments of idling that I don't love. Yeah. A hobo acting regal. That's what that line is? Yeah. Yeah, just like normal shit. Yeah, just like top-notch stuff. It is funny, like, when you realize, like, it doesn't really matter what you're shooting. Like, the stakes are the highest. And so, like, when you look back and you're like, oh, my God, like, Rudd gashed his hand, and Keefe had to be called back into the building, even though his wife was about to give birth, and it's like, what for? The stumbling. For a tiny harmonica solo. Yeah. Rewatching Stumbling just now, my main takeaway is the moment it cuts to McCartney singing and walking in slow motion is great. Yeah. That's my favorite. That's my main thing. Let's see what John Solomon has to say. Quick memories of Stumbling are that it was a 24-hour shoot. I remember seeing crew members curled up in balls at the top of this stairwell where we were finishing shooting. Oh, no. Saturday morning, including Jody from the hair department, who we all love, who was somehow still in good spirits, but it was a marathon shoot, definitely the craziest shoot that I have participated in at SNL. Paul Rudd gashed his hand open, running in or out of the elevator on the eighth floor. He kept doing takes and trying to hide it, kind of, and then at some point, I think I said to him, what's going on with your hand? And he kind of mumbled that he nicked it and then showed it to me, and there was blood gushing out of it, and it needed to be bandaged, but he just wanted to, he didn't want to trouble anyone with it, which was, you know, testament to his love of SNL, professional. And then the other thing was, Lauren said, "Oh, you're going to be filming with Paul McCartney. Can you go say hello to him when he gets here and introduce yourself?" And I had never met Paul McCartney, obviously, and I remember walking down to the dressing room on the eighth floor where the musical guests are usually, and seeing his vegan food kind of laid out in the hallway, and then poking my head into the dressing room. He had his back to me, and he turned around, and he extended his hand, and he said, "Cashew?" And he had a little tub of cashews. And I said, "Yeah, I'll take a cashew." And I ate cashews with him. And he was very nice and super fun on the shoot, and it was crazy. - That was a good note. - Thanks, John. - That was great. - Thank you, John. The main thing he reminded me of was "yes," and it speaks to exactly what you were just saying, Seth, about the stakes feeling so high. We shot for, like, 24 hours straight to get it done. I'm just spinning out because when McCartney said "cashew" to me, I said "gazuntite." I knew it was. It's getting gay. The only surprising thing is that Solomon didn't say it already in his voicemail. Yeah, it's getting worse. It would have been so great to be like, "No, I'm allergic." Like, there's so many different things you can be a bummer to say that to. Oh, he's just like, "Do you have any ham?" Very fun. Do you think, though, that, like, when then Solomon got back, to Loren's office, he's like, "McCartney doesn't care for you." "I have to call Akiva." "Well, we just had cashews." He probably thought he was too handsome. He's like, "I don't trust this guy." "Did you take a fucking cashew?" "You're supposed to say no." "No, they're fucking his cashews." "That's his fucking test." "Do you know how much those fucking cashews cost?" "Akiva never would have taken the cashew." Perfect Lorenz again. "A fucking $100 cashew, you dumb piece of shit." "But you raised it in a fucking barn." "Oh. I suppose you were going to handsome school when you were supposed to be learning about cashews." "No, cashews for everybody. Oh, hey, one of the Beatles is giving out cashews." "All right, call Akiva." All right, let's hear from Rudd. I'm very excited and hopeful that we're gonna hear the Rudd take on his gashed hand. Yes, here we go. Or is he such a pro that he's just gonna not even tell us? I remember shooting this so clearly because it was the most surreal thing. And what was surreal about it was it just kept getting more and more odd and incredible. Obviously, filming this with Paul McCartney as we're dancing around him in satin shirts and clapping. But we had to-- kind of that whole section took a while. And I just remember Paul telling us all these great stories about John and the Beatles and filming Hard Day's Night. And it was absolutely amazing. And then not that later in the day, going in to listen to him record Berlin in a sound booth. And Keev, I remember you were sitting behind, like, kind of a mixing board and giving him direction on how to sing the Berlin song. And while he was doing it, you looked back at me, and we both kind of wordlessly acknowledged how frickin' bonkers that was. And, yeah, it was an amazing, amazing experience. And that didn't happen. That didn't happen in a parallel universe. That actually happened in real life. - Oh, my gosh. - That's true. - He didn't mention the finger. - Wow, you're right. - What a pro. He's just like, that's not what it was about. He just remembers the positive. Yeah, he really-- I mean, again, you're like, how does Paul Rudd stay so young? 'Cause he fucking only remembers the positive. That's right. Let that be a lesson to you, Quades. That guy's not holding any negative energy. I do remember right when I met McCartney that he was just like, "Don't be afraid. Like, I want direction. You don't have to tell me exactly what to do." I think he walks into rooms and people are on eggshells with him because he's who he is. And he was like, basically tried to tell me, "Don't be on eggshells. Just boss me around. Like, treat me like all these guys." Not 'cause I had done something else, but he had just learned to be like, "Dude, 'cause I'll be flailing out there, and I'll look worse. Like, tell me when I'm doing it wrong. Just give me tons of direction. Shout it out." And so I think that's the reason I was, like, able to just immediately be telling him something about Berlin. I have no clue what it would be. You're allergic to cashews. Fucking tell me. Like, don't go to the hospital. Exactly. Exactly. He said, "That's you." And then Solomon was like, "And maybe try." And he was like, "No! Not you!" You! You fail! You're a failure! No joke on a nut! He was doing those small shows in New York, McCartney, I think right before the 50th. You know what I'm talking about? Like, a 500-seat venue. Comedy Cellar? Oh. Yeah, he was just going up for a set. He was working on his Kevin Hart roast material. But I was asking -- I asked him about it, and he was just talking about how much he loves being somewhere small, like, how hard it is, and just how the banter is super fun, and, like, when a string breaks on your guitar, it's super fun, 'cause it's, like, this -- everybody there is like, "Oh, my God, we're -- hey, we're watching him, like, replace his string." You know what I mean? It's not -- it's not a failure. It's just, like, an incredible person to -- It turns into a hangout as opposed to, like, that you're just having to put on a show. Yeah. I like -- I like him using it as a transition to talk about, like, "Oh, I love small places," and then slowly bringing the harmonica up. Yeah. The smaller the venue, the bigger this harmonica looks. You know how small things are -- Like a little Hot Wheel, "This is my call." You're like, "Wait a minute." First time I ever spoke to him, I said hi to him, and he said, "Are there any good skits this week?" And I was just like, "Ugh. I don't know the sketches." "Lauren prefers sketches." "Lauren prefers sketches." "Take the cashew out of your mouth, idiot. It's called a sketch." Oh, Akiva. You can also call them a scene. "Take the cashews out of your ears." Or a piece, right? A piece. Oh, that's a good piece. That's a good scene. Yeah, a piece is really -- That's -- that's the -- that's the good stuff. So Stumblin' was a piece. Yeah. Stumblin', maybe -- I don't know if we have a bucket for where Stumblin' goes. I enjoy it fine. It's a nice little thing. I don't think it's criterion. I don't think it's Kim's video. No. No. But the McCartney moment when it goes from one to the other and he starts singing is -- I'll say this. If you were making, like, a montage of all moments that were cool from them, I would definitely nominate the McCartney moment. Yeah. Yeah, walking in slow motion, and you guys walking in slow motion, is right up there. And I also want to say, in a real -- because I do think a good message is how hard this shit is. Because you have Paul McCartney, who is a genuinely great moment. You have Wig doing an insanely great Dolly Parton. You and Rudd are great the whole time. And just something just doesn't quite click together. It's just -- It's nice and short. Yeah. It's nice and short. It's fun. It's a fun one. Here's what it's lacking: hard laughs. Yeah. But sometimes you got to just make something, because it's -- you know, you don't go on because you're ready. Wait, do it in your Lorne voice. Well, you don't go on because you're ready. You go on because it's 11:30. We just do it, you guys. It's like I'm there. Come on, guys. Just do it. It's 11:30 already. Is this fucking Jiffy Pop? Oh, my God. This popcorn tastes like Daffy. It's so chewy. So, hey, look at that. This one felt like a real episode. We didn't talk about any of the red stuff. But you got a hard out, right, Andy? Well, let's take five minutes to talk about the rest of the show. And obviously, I got to hit up my man, Jack Black. Oh, well, let's just do that part, because I don't want to rush through stuff. Yeah, there's some good first shorts in this. I'm looking at the right one. at the rundown, stuff we talked about. - Yeah, so let's put a pin in that, you know just had sex is our next short we gotta put a little air in this thing Andy how did you do on the spelling bee today hit it Jack Black spelling bee spelling bee Seth I intentionally didn't text you because I wanted this moment to have tension and the answer is I quibbied clean pangram first bitch oh shit and I also confirmed with you via whatsapp that you had to use hints and that's what makes it so much sweeter you guys it's the pangram what is the pangram the pangram he uses all the letters oh yeah we talked about this a while ago now I'm remembering I know because I got solid today alright I was by the way no drama for me Andy when I finished with hints I would have bet the house that it was gonna be a clean bee for you that's right it was only a 20 word day so I was feeling real confident but nothing no crazy deep cuts or anything what bud I did quibby clean at least two or three times this week yeah so I had a good week thanks for asking everybody that's great Andy congrats one more I want to give one more shout out to my brother-in-law's documentary Rafa four episodes on Netflix I went to a screening in New York City this week that Rafa was at and Andy Roddick interviewed Rafa and Zach Heinzling the director and Andy Roddick has been on the show he has a tennis podcast right now and is really good he's just a really good interviewer he's really funny and as a former SNL host I'm just glad to see that man thriving oh wait there's one thing I did want to mention is that the truck the van the K truck has made its way to New York and I did get to drive it around with my man Andy I rode in it y'all and it did not disappoint it's even stupider in person it can't disappoint because it is it's like built to disappoint I feel like Andy we should put in because we drove around Manhattan and we hit one of the cobblestone streets and it does not have good shocks yeah and there's a very funny video there's a nice we went to dinner with our friends Josh and Paul which was a delightful time we went to Via Corota shout out Via Corota thanks for making great food shout out the bay paid full price so I don't know why they didn't bring us anything free or anything it was excellent it's highly rated for a reason kind of frankly thought maybe bluetooth speaker in the van because there's no like real usable sound system it's like a cassette player it's cassette 1996 and so we were rolling around the west village on a Saturday night like you can barely move gridlock traffic in this wrapped Japanese van with dragons all over it blasting dance hall and every single block we went down people were like laughing and pointing and smiling and I was like this is bringing so much happiness right now it was like like we when we walked up to it to get into it people were walking by going like oh shit like everyone was so delighted by it I was like okay I get it this is like Yorm in a car it really is it's like a little clown car like ill conceived and delightful and like defies all the rules it's not safe but it's just great would you say it's like the tiny harmonica of cars I would definitely say it's the tiny harmonica of cars it also made me so happy because Andy I don't know how you worded it but you were like it's so great that we're such good friends but that we're the opposite we make the opposite choice in every single moment in life and yet we're like very dear friends and we are it's a beautiful thing it is like if a witch turned Yorm into a car this would be exactly what it would be oh that's a good movie premise yeah only if that happened Seth I wouldn't want to be turned back yeah and the whole movie is friends being like we're gonna get you back and you're like no no I'm good I'm good meep meep meep meep I was gonna do the same joke Seth same joke meep meep joke first day that I was driving it in Brooklyn
