But also and more importantly, almost check yourself. But you guys don't have one reason if you're watching, if you're watching on Netflix, that's a homemade Reese's glass plate type peanut butter cup thing that has a spit and chicklets logo. She has one too. Yeah, suck it, you too. But the boss, the boss, we're the most loyal Reese's eaters. So this thing hockey sticks and a chicklets logo on a Reese's is probably one of my most prize possessions. It is Reese's. I love the colors. I love the flavors. I love all their different candy and Halloween's approaching show everyone out there. You know, I actually went around a rink. I was at the the Cranston veteran's memorial rink from at 1040 for why it's game Saturday. I went around and I asked a bunch of people, what's your favorite candy? I asked 27 people 25 said Reese's peanut butter cups. Can you go out here? No joke. You don't want to go around kids at these hockey rinks anymore. Every week I get a video of a kid decapitating another. I saw another slasher. The head was talking nuts. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know when kids started thinking it was acceptable to baseball bat people in the head with their hockey stick. Now luckily, the internet wasn't around and videos weren't around as Brian Yandell was growing up because I don't know if he ever got people in the temple, but they were broken risks, risks up and down every weekend. Brian, what was the craziest thing you did as a kid growing up wet? I was a clean honest player, dude. I ate Reese's. I showed up. I put my heart out on and I fucking passed the puck tape to tape. I actually have a great memory though. Speaking of brotherly love and some dirty play, he decided to fight some monster Russian in the bridge water summer league one night. My game ended. I was watching and I just saw Brian Yandell sprinting down the ice, jumping on the kids back. I think this was after KO Keith Brian and he didn't really get Brian, but it was like the Russian from Rocky IV and both the andals were like trying to like stay alive with this guy. That would have been an instance. I wouldn't have been surprised if Brian Yandell had given him the baseball bat swing across the head. You know, that's brotherly love right there, taking care of this. Go down, Keith. So you know our boy Reggie, Reggie Roach. He was in the he was in the course summer league, right? But it was a good summer league lot of pros, college. I think you had to be like either a college commit in college or pro. So playing I was young, probably like 17 right with. But whatever, but I was out. Yes. So our buddy Reggie's dancing in the corner in this Russian kid just comes in and cleans house big head clean hit. Oh my God, that's not happening to my buddy Reg. So I go over square off for this kid next thing. I know I look up. I'm looking at the lights in the bridge water arena. He won bank me bleeding every day. My lip split my lip. I look like nose face killer. Yeah. If you're the nose face cloth. Yeah. So then I look up and then all of a sudden I just see my brother skating all the way down the ice. I think he was on the bench, jumped the bench, skates all the way down, dives on top of him. Yeah, looking out for his younger brother. So yeah, you got to respect. But he didn't do anything dirty in that one, which I was kind of shocked. He, I think he shedded the mitts and his stick at center rice and kept skating or he would have used this stick. He was a lethal with it. But the unfortunate plan to his strengths actually showed up the checklets cup this year with a mustache. Yeah, he has to. Yeah, he has to and he still got his game. Still got his game. I think that he, I think he finally figured it out. I don't think he'd been doing it all the other checklets cops, right? And, and you know what? He kind of lost his fastball. I think the cleft lip kind of helps him out and gives him a little bit of an edge. That was the worst that I'd seen him at any of the checklets caught. I thought he was good and made it to the finals watching maybe in never enough Reese's. So yeah, but you know, like look towards Halloween, just everyone. I know everyone can't get this glass plate with their logo and hockey sticks on it, but you can go buy Reese's peanut butter cups and any other Reese's candy you want. Can I tell you mine? We were in Brampton, planning against a triple A team on the road. It was just me and my dad who drove like my mom, my mom didn't really do the long trips, especially during the work week. What's that ride? I would say from my house probably like an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic, because when you go to Toronto, sometimes going to be other than a shit show. So I went to hit a kid and he submarine me. Like, you know, you so I don't know how many people listening, like, you know, whether you're just getting in the hockey or you're, you know, if you've been following it a long time, you know, it's gotless. When if you have the puck and a guy's coming to hit you, if you submarine and like go like basically go to where the guys knees are, it's gotless. So he did it once and the ref didn't call it. So whatever went to do it again, like to like late, like couple shifts later, went to he did the exact same thing. Both times I went ask over to kettle, but once again, like you could tear your ACL MCL like you fuck yourself up. So I like my wires crossed. So I fucking punched the kid in the head. And then as I was going back and obviously there was a delayed call, their whole bench was kind of turpent at me. And because my wires are crossed, I jumped into their bench. Like I went Superman into their bench and just started swinging. I ended up getting ejected from the game. And my dad was in the crowd. And you know, he was a little bit more vocal in my early days, like when refs were like being bullshit. So he got tossed from the rink, so missing at double, missing at barrel, but gone so double toss, we're fucking driving home. Like those how mom, but yeah, so, don't tell mom sitting there in silence, Pear pops up in the back seat. We didn't even know he was back. Didn't even notice back there. Hey, how you going to do it? But that was probably the most like like the like quarter core greasiest thing I ever did. But I was provoked. I ended up getting I didn't even get suspended from the league. I had a coach Bobby Crawlux, who like was trying to teach us accountability and to keep our cool. He actually suspended me for a game like our coach did. And you know, always look back and appreciative of the coaches I had and well. And when I was back there last year, like I went and met him for like he was having a few beers. I was on the non-alcs, but just great to like to see him. I always touch base with all my old coaches when I'm back home. And yeah, I'll never forget me. They both this and that's got the toss. Well, it's funny. You talk about driving long distances with your dad. You never wanted to play bad on the long ride game, right? No, you're like, why do you have my dad fucking, I know, but I know, but something like that, even if your dad was more into it and let you hear it on the way home, if you played bad, that's one you're like, good job, son. The guy, the kid tried tearing your ACL twice. It's Martian versus Sammy Salo in the cup. Yeah, Martian torched the canoxid entire. I remember that though. He was a pro. Still is. It just going low. And if you're coming to get him, watch out knees. So yeah, I hear you on like the long ride home stuff. I surprisingly, I know I don't shut up now, but when I was growing up on the way to games, like even if we were going to gray Bruce and it was like three and a half, four hours away from well and day of the game, I wouldn't talk before the game. I have my headphones on and I'd be like, like zoned in focusing, getting ready. Even my first year of in the OHL, I didn't talk before games. Really? Yeah, you're a rookie. Shut the fuck up.
Okay, I think I told the story recently where like a few of the vets were like, Hey, this is the shower that doesn't have any warm water. You shower in the cold shower. Even when they weren't around, I showered in the cold shower. Like I was just like a respectful and then I went home that summer. And then it was just like, something changed. Now I don't shut the fuck up with you remember that we're very thankful for that. We're very thankful for that. Yeah, wait for a tough pod. Just here and you, you talk, well, then now we got wit and then or I experienced the only person that's experienced it since then was me and Rod Brenda Moore. What I thought this guy, I thought this guy was an analyst. Yeah, I'll never forget seeing you at the breakfast place before that interview. You looked at me, you looked at me like, Oh man, I'm feeling rough. You're like, have you slept yet? Nope, not one second. What do you remember the incidents? When my dad's team was playing summerville high and the end of the game, there was a huge brawl in the ice and the one kid was out there. Yeah. So biz, I was probably like 12 at the time, maybe 13. And my dad was coaching high school and the end of the game happened. There was a huge brawl like 20 on 20. That was legit. One kid ended up going on to court. It was on the news, everything. One kid starts grabbing the ref and just starts beating like beating the ref. And the ref was my dad's buddy. So I grabbed a stick and I go on the ice. I'm 13 years old and I just start baseball batting this kid like to get off the ref. Oh my God, it is air walks on my dad's key. My dad didn't really knew what happened. And then it went to court and then he came home after that. He's like, I have to see you on video beaten something with a stick. Oh, dude, he was so mad at me. I'm like, Oh, sorry. Thought I was what you dropped to the fourth round, he's helping on a rep. Would you help Oak Kevin Codont? You see, he's a ref now. Yeah, it's kind of weird. I play with Codont in their same. Yeah, we were, we were there with Codont. It's weird Jordan Samuel Thomas is another guy who started out as a lineman, like probably four or five years ago. And now I saw that he's like an actual ref now. He's got the, like the orange bands. I thought you had to read, I thought you had to, I thought you had to start at the bottom. If you were ref and I'm sure he did, there's a new wave of, of like guys that we played with, where I don't know if it just so happens that a lot of the older refs were tired around this time. Keep in mind, two man, like, and this is no knock against the older refs. Like the game has, has like, like probably doubled if not tripled in speed. So you have to be able to keep up to the play. And like, I don't know if that's part of the reason for it. And or there were just a lot of older ones that just happened to retire at the same time. But I've noticed that there's been like an influx of who's, um, who's the rest talk like we do about players. I'll tell you who's that. Oh, yeah, I played against him in junior and he was in sub-bree at the time. So, oh, I would imagine the refs, he see his boots this season too. Yeah, for sure they do. Yeah, I think it's a smart idea to have these guys. Like, can I not have a great career? Played a long time, you know, NHL, HL in Europe. Like who knows the game better than a guy like that? I think it's, I think it's smart for them to have a dude. Obviously he can still skate and he told me he's all in. He did some camps this summer, um, you know, doing some, I think it was like BCHL stuff, like preseason and now he's in the coast and he's ref and he's like, dude, I'm loving it. I'm having such a good time, even just having something to do when you retire. But I think just for like the, the game being good and like you said, it's gotten faster and faster and the younger guys keeping up and guys that played at a high level. I think it's a no brainer to have that. And I'm sure they get paid pretty decent. I mean, they should have to get them on salary and get them doing some Greensboro game soon. Jesus Christ. I know, buddy. I saw the gargoyles, holy fuck. They're leaving off last year, starting off for last year and it owned to business there. I got the redding royals Instagram and Twitter accounts coming at me, chirp and me for last week's, Lord, last pods comments. It's, it's tough sledding. Oh, and two didn't score on Saturday. I was there Friday, though, for the opener and it was a great game. I think it ended three, two, um, but it was, yeah, awesome game. Boys fought hard, just couldn't get the job done. And you know, who was there to join me? Oh, yeah, bugger, bugger, a Jeff Tafe, he's doing some amazing things. Uh, let me text Jeff. God, I forget the name of what it's like wounded warrior stuff, right? Isn't he? Yeah. Yeah, he, he, he brings like, uh, he brings, uh, like families. Like he brought like, what was a three or four families to the games where, you know, he's, he's going to these army bases and he's teaching these kids hockey and like going in Dallas camps, providing like gear for them, um, and he's been doing some awesome stuff. So he reached out about collaborating. I said, hey, first off, let's meet up at a Gargoyles game, uh, you know, treat these families to, to a night out of hockey. It was awesome. I got to hang out. These kids were like so well behaved and, and the families were incredible. So we're going to keep doing stuff with them, uh, and bringing them to game and then obviously hopefully, uh, uh, expanding it as well and maybe even doing a camp, uh, down the road with them. Jeff Tafe, an awesome, awesome player when he played. He was, yeah, I'm actually looking at his hockey DB right now. He could play man. I played with him. He was, yeah, he was, he was, he was unbelievable drinking beers at the bar too. We used to play. Oh, yeah, he's a, he's a plus seven handicap, he had, he's amazing at it. We used to play this game. I played with him in the minors in San Antonio, and in Phoenix, but we'd play a game after practice. Last guy to get up to pee has to pay the bill. This dude, he had iron blotter. He would not get a, he'd have 500 drinks and you'd be like, I will, Buggers not plant yet. One touching them. One touch of them. Never one. Never paying. He didn't pay for a lunch. I'll see. It's called the United Heroes League is what, uh, what Tafe is doing. So check them out. They have a website and everything. He would, so he would, he would be the first guy at the rink every day. He'd have his coffee. He'd, he'd be unreal hands at practice when they would work on power play. He'd be on the half wall, setting up tapens. That was the best power play I think we had of any of the years I was in Wilkes, Bear. His ability to go through the neutral zone and go untouched. He was a, he was a one man breakout and break into the offensive zone. He would get home after practice and he would fucking one touch about 20 Miller lights. He would be in, he would be in bed at eight o'clock and rinse and repeat everything. But I was shocked to see. He's. Look. Great. First of all, he looks just the exact same. He's moved on for Miller lights. Really? He's now a cooers like guy who shat happens to a lot of people, not with any, I was a bud light guy and now I can't even like taste one really. Like it's just, I, you have enough and Tafe for had enough. I mean, he was Nicholas Shea before Nicholas Shea in terms of Miller lights. So you know the silver stick they give out, they gave him a silver Miller light because you have a million of them. Yeah. I heard that. Yeah. I mean, just a great guy, great player six goals and seven games in one of the world juniors he played. And that's fucking no joke. One of the best college teams to like him, Vanna Keith, Ballard, Leopold, that Minnesota, they beat my brother's team, right? That was the UNH. Yes. Or was that the first year before was the year he won the one in Minnesota when they won an overtime. I think so. I don't remember. I was on my hands and knees in the box, begging him to go down between periods and gear up for the power play. Like I was begging him because he loved the, I love the shave job. He said, great. He shaved that head all the way to the wood and it looks great. He had twin dogs, Max and Duke, I'll never forget their names. They looked identical golden retrievers and every time I was at his house, I would just switch their callers. So Jenny is wife would be like, Max, come here and Duke would come running. Every day I'd do it. It'd be like, she would be so distressed, she'd be like, just why? Why do you do this? I'm like, I don't know. It's funny. And then she'd be like, why do we have an upside down pineapple picture in the hallway here? Oh, shit. But that was it. That was what I did. I don't think I had anything else crazy this weekend. Oh, yeah. I was in the, I was in the ranks. I was running around. So pretty low key. We get as beautiful out here too. Just prime fog off whether I haven't played any golf kind of stinks. But I'll tell you guys, there's, there's, there's rumblings in Winnipeg Elliott, Elliott drops a bomb. I think for Friday night or one of the nights, he's like, yeah, so he'll buck suspension is going to be ending here now for people who aren't aware. He requested a trade, didn't get traded, then released the statement and Winnipeg released the statement and then says he's not going to camp or was suspended. I don't know the order of how that worked out. And apparently this suspension ends this Friday. So what's crazy about this and we, I don't know what episode we talked about the feelings in the locker room. Our aim might have brought it up to us. And I was kind of like, yeah, I mean, I can't put myself in there. I've never been in a situation like that, specifically not with the best player on the team and the best goalie in the world. And then we've gotten quotes in camp from Kyle Connor. And then just the other night from captain Adam Lowry, who have made it pretty clear. It's not like water under the bridge, it's not like
this is no big deal. Whenever he's back, he's back. They've been vocal to the media of, yeah, if he's back, there's going to have to be some conversations, which hints at some apologies. And then does the team even want to back and then visit was was Scott or Neil asked about it too? Oh, yeah. That was like, he was basically like, I don't even care to answer this. He's like, we got games to worry about and games to win. So it seems like the whole team is pretty checked out on Connor, Connor, Hello, Buck, the most surprising comments that we talked about it in training camp was Kyle Connor. Yeah. And he played on the US Olympic team with him and both both Michigan boys too, right? Both Michigan guys, like they, I mean, they've both been in Winnipeg for fuck what? Like, almost 10 years, if not 10 years on the nose now. And in training camp, he's like, if he does come back, they're going to have to be some serious conversations. And basically he said, he's going to have to explain to us why he deserves to be back on the team and why we should accept them back in the locker room. And boys, like, I view this situation completely different than the Larkin situation. Do you guys agree with that? Yeah, because he came back, took his lick and he's playing. Well, not not only that, but like, like, this is a team in Detroit that hadn't made playoffs for for 10 years. Like we're talking about a team that's a few years removed from winning the president's trophy. And talk about a team and an organization in a fan base, maybe outside of the noise after the Olympics. But I would imagine Kyle Conner was here in that noise just as much. Maybe and he ends in where you guys could speak more to this. Like, I feel like in hellabuck situation, it seems like the threats and guys with the internet today, like players are getting fucking threats all the time. Like from stupid, but it happens. It's dumb. It's stupid, but it's like not going away. And it's the fucking internet. Do you have to take it with a pound of salt? It seems like it affected hellabuck in his family way more than it did Kyle Conner, but I don't think much phases Kyle Conner. All he does is just show up, put up 40 goals and snap it around with Shifley on one of the best lines in the league, right? Looking like the Shermanator out there. So like, this is an organization, a team and a fan base that's had hellabuck's back when if anything after these successful regular seasons, he hasn't been the same player or come playoff time. So of any of that core group to kind of bail on the team for it to be him, I feel like that would rub the room a lot worse that it would any of the other guys part of that core group. Is that a fair comment? Yeah. Yes. I do think that you know, if your wife's bringing up things that she's dealing with and you have had these, these guys who are making threats or saying kind of inappropriate things, it's hard to put yourself in that situation, you know? Like he's he's in a spot obviously where things have gone down where he doesn't feel comfortable there. It doesn't want to be there. But now it's just it was just ultimate worst case scenario where they start off pretty good. They're getting pretty good goal tending and he hasn't been traded. It's like, this is this worked out as bad as it could have ever worked out. Now I want my money. I want to be paid. You suspended me, what you were allowed to do. Well Grinnelli was trying to explain this where it was Grinnelli hop on here where the team suspended them, but you can't just suspend them for the entire year. Like he has to be able to yeah, Elliott said that on 30s who thoughts today, basically that the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL's lawyers have been working behind the scenes on getting to this date and the date is up is this Friday and Elliott also said, like there's a chance that they just pay him and say, don't even come. They don't want this. Yeah, they're going to have to have that conversation, right? The GM and the players and the coaches before he's able to come back because you can't just have him walk into the locker room be like, all right, boys figure it out. Boys, he's going to have to get down on his hands and knees to get back in that locker room. They got the heritage classic on Sunday against Montreal in Winnipeg. They don't want him around the locker room. They don't want him around the team. I think for that, you say come Monday after it. Like let's enjoy this weekend and then we'll figure that out. It might be what business is saying though that don't come. Yeah, we'll start paying you. Come at all. But don't you think hockey players in general? Like you tell me Adam Lowry, if you're like, Hey, Ella Bucks coming back, he's going to help us win games. Like these guys just want to win games. Like if he's going to be there, based buddy, if you're getting public quotes like this, the private conversation is always times 10, like, I'm going to need to have that. I'm going to read this for you. The last three playoffs for Connor, Ella Bucks, eight, eight, six, safe percentage, three point four, four goals against five goals against five point zero, one goals against. That's the one eight points are eight, seventy, safe percentage. And then last year three goal three point eight or three point zero eight goals against with an eight six six, eight percentage. So those are the last three playoff performances. He's provided them. In one case, got him out in 2024, 2025, got out of the first round because of their goal scoring and a miracle and a complete miracle in game seven. So I get like you said, maybe his family's not comfortable there anymore based on the response after the Olympics. But I would imagine that Kyle Conner was probably seeing some of that and it didn't really phase him and he any realizes that like these are just a few idiots online that I'm sure any fucking players dealing with at all times if they're on social media. And you also have to imagine that guys like Kyle Conner, Shifley, signed these long term deals knowing that they had this really good core intact. Bro, think about how many teams have a star sentiment, like a number true number one sentiment. They got one in Shifley put up over 100 points last year. A starwinger Kyle Conner, who's a 40 goal guy, Morris sees a number one defenseman now. And then they had a number one goalie. Tell me how many teams in the league have those off the list. Yeah, 10 maybe. Oilers. He's putting Levi in that category already. This guy is nuts. So I'm getting I'm getting I'm getting people are really sick and tired of my oilers act. And I love it. I absolutely love it. Oh, okay. Well, read off his playoffs stats. And I'll say this Buffalo's got to go figure out a way to get this guy. And we heard rumblings around the draft. And I know you PL won't go to Winnipeg figure out a three-way deal. Buffalo's given up the most goals in the Eastern Conference as many as the flyers. All right. Go get hell of buck. Make this happen. I don't know how it happens. I don't even three-way trades to me. They break my brain as a hockey podcast host is that a good thing? Probably not. But I hear three-way trade. And I'm I you lost me at the three-way part. Elliott mentioned UPL to the New York Rangers as a potential option. That makes that makes sense as like a short term. Yeah, put a band-aid on it. And also like UPL, I believe he's only making four million bucks. So reasonable amount for a backup. Don't think he's a true starter yet. And I think that that would be a good situation to work out a three-way. So I would love to see him in Buffalo. I feel like it has like a Ryan Miller 2.0 written all over it. Get that American guy in there. But it seems like Elliott was alluding to the fact that Ryan Smith is going big game hunting. And he wants he wants his number one goalie. And also Yanns, you were mentioning that he's looking for another deed in the mix. Yeah, I heard they were going big game hunting for a demon too. If imagine you could bring in a guy like hella Bach and you know, bones keeps it up in Columbus. Where ends he might be asking for a trade like they could be you know, getting two guys like that. But I was going to ask you, do you think that hella Bach got it worse online just because you know, he got like the award from President Trump like he was kind of his faces on the White House. Kyle Khan don't think he went. But I could be wrong. Maybe you can look at. But here's the thing though. So so I think that part of the noise is louder for hella Bach is I think he just told the team, Hey, I'll see you when I'm done kind of this whole Shabang bang with going to the White House and stuff like that. And they had a game that he missed. And I think that Kyle Conner did go back like he just missed the White House because he's like no, I got to get back. But he didn't really play as much. Yeah, like hella Bach once again though, knowing as little as we know because in reality, the locker room and the team it is just so different. That's why the quote are odd because usually everything's kept in house. But if you guys if you were to say that hella Bach went in there and was like, I just want to play and apologize and almost as like guys, like I fucked up, I would be shocked if they weren't happy to take them back. Agreed. Okay. So based on everything that's happened, you think Conner Howell Bach is going to go back and get on his hands and knees? Probably not. Well, I think they could also think it think of it as a way like, okay, if he does come back, he plays well, we're going to get more for him. And that's going to help our team out here if we do end up training. But at the end of the day, when the one of the best goalies to ever play is sitting at home in his prime, like we need him in the lead on one team, one of these teams just to see him out there playing. Yeah. And yeah, I think I guess I was surprised that this guy, if regardless of the online noise that he couldn't get past that considering they had like a family inside the locker room that have been together and gone through a lot and teammates that have had his back through his down.
in that organization where, like, I don't know, I agree with you, Yanns, it sucks that this goalie in his prime is sitting at home and this is a situation that's going on. Obviously, it's good for our podcast because I fucking love talking about all this drama that the leagues kicking up. But I don't see a world where he's playing puts on the Winnipeg Jets uniform again. And if it is, it's like, it's like a facade that he's going in there. Sure. I'm sorry. Yeah. After he gets traded in a week, he's on the bench and a baseball hat. There he is. He's back. When do you think this will get done by, like, because it's got to get done soon, no? I think that I think that Utah has the, I think Utah has the best opportunity to make themselves like a true contender if they're not already now because they have a Ginla. And then that French kid who's an absolute sniper. So if you're looking at like, they have draft, yeah, it's his name's a, uh, there's one name. Maybe they own a, like they could, like these, these, uh, Columbus and, and, um, and Winnipeg. Like, that's like those are the types of players that you can actually get a return on. And I believe that they have pretty good draft capital, like how many first rounders did they have in the next three years? So you already have all your young studs. You got your sign too. You got your, um, Gunther, um, Gunther, uh, you got a small, small, yeah, everyone. They have four rounds. They have four rounds in the next three years. I truly believe that you talk and make themselves a true contender. How many? How many? Four first rounders in the next three years. So, I mean, that's what Florida did. They just traded all their first rounders for play. You got to do it. Got to do it. Florida's coming, by the way. Florida's won three in a row and something that's never happened before, which I wasn't surprised to see it never happened before. Three straight games with natural hat tricks. And in the third game, there was actually two hat tricks. So Brady gets up the schneide against Columbus. He gets a hat trick. The next game Brady gets a hat trick, well, they all in the third period, right? Because the natural had it back when that was against, uh, Seattle was the other one. Was a carol. Vancouver. Vancouver Vancouver. Yeah. I don't know. You get, then you get to their game against Seattle and fucking verhagi does it and Bennett gets a hat trick in the same game. So they're doing this without bar call. They're doing it without Marshawn, a little bit of a slow start, I guess, through what? Like four or five games, but now it's like, all right. They're fine. They're fine. Two and two now. Yeah. The Panthers. The Panthers. And if you're Brady and you're going into Ottawa on Wednesday, the fact that he was pointless in all these Ottawa fans are chirping online, just like these fucking idiot flyers fans and all of a sudden he gets to come in with the big swing and dick back to back. Nadi haddies and fuck I, what does he have like eight to ten points now? Yeah. That is such a, that is such a morale boost like where you know, you're walking in like Conor McGregor and they're like, yeah, bitch is daddy's home, giving my tribute video motherfuckers. I want three minutes. I want three a minute for every fucking goal I scored back to back game, bitches. Three games ago. What do you have? I'm a racist and now he's got ten points games and he, and he's going in Wednesday night. But what's cool is Ottawa looks awesome. Ottawa is getting incredible goal tending and big news today. I think right before we signed on here, Travis Green gets an extension. Well deserved there. Well deserved. I wouldn't need. Why wouldn't he? So that game Wednesday night. That is one that like the DVR set, you're, you're ready to go right at puck drop to see this thing go down. So we're on TNT. There's only one game. We have Flyers visiting Buffalo and then that's the other game on a slate. So the whole hockey world, there's only two games on so the whole hockey world will probably be tuned in to that, to that contest and I wish you guys had that. I know, but we'll be, we'll be talking about that situation and we'll be, you know, going back and forth and yeah, no, it's the drama. There's no shortage of drama in the NHL to kick off this season so far. And you mentioned Ottawa, they, they, they did look good until they rolled into Philadelphia and then all of a sudden lose their, their, uh, lose to the, to the team that was the own, or second, there's two teams league that were winless through the start of the season and Philly was one of them and they finally got off the schneide. I am getting carved for saying that I wouldn't take Meach Cobb for a first round pick because people like a late first round pick, you know, I'm going to trade for Meach Cobb. It did make me think a little bit, did make me think a little bit, maybe, maybe, I kind of, I, I almost, I almost want to change my answer because think about it, probably 30 second overall, if they win the cup, so yeah, I hear it, yeah, Meach Cobb will take you, we'll give you a shot over here in Edmonton, but I don't know, man, I, I don't think it's as crazy as I said, people like, they look at this fucking idiot. This guy is an idiot. I can't lose it to him anymore, but how many flyers fans are in your mentions right now with a lot, they hate me, they hate us, they, they think, they think that we're talking to talk and talk, telling us what to say and then we say it, they, you guys stink right now. Talk stinks. You stink. The city stinks. Everyone stinks in there in that city. I'm not carrying water for anyone. You guys just stink. He's just not not a good team. I don't understand why they want us dead so much. What are we supposed to say right now? Look at you. Not putting out a good, like they can't, as fans, like they're passionate, right? They're bringing you like, they're passionate is shit. But it's like at the end of the day, sometimes you just got to look at the lineup and be like, Oh, fuck, maybe this team just does not have it and they aren't going to have it all year. But to think that somebody's a superstar when they haven't proven anything is a little
, all right, we got Rick talk in here, ladies and gentlemen. So talk. We're going to say it all these fucking flyers fans on behalf of Rick talk it. And I haven't even talked to him so far this year. Switch over to it. These are both ladies and gentlemen. These are both fucking people on the planet. I have gotten fucking, I got more mentions from flyers fans than all the other fan bases combined. What the fuck have you guys won in the last 40, maybe even 50 years? One's the last time we want to spend the 75, let's do the map. That's over 50 fucking years. Do you want to know what's on the winning pedigree for Rick talk it? He's got a Stanley Cup as a player with the Pittsburgh penguins because he had to go to Pittsburgh to finally win one because you guys are losers. Okay. Then he won two Stanley cups with the penguins as an assistant coach. He's got fucking world cup of hockey's. He's done it all. And you guys are just a bunch of losers and you're hating on him nonstop. All you guys are talking about all we want him can last year, we want him can last year. What does he do? Help lead you guys to the playoffs. What the fuck are you laughing about Ryan Whitney? David has more points than the flyer's roster right now. Shut up. Exactly. Is that true? Yeah. Okay. Mechkov five. Zegers four. That's nine. Devorak four. That's 13. Connect me three. That's 16. More tone three. That's 19. Okay. They have like one more point. Maybe. I think I saw that stab maybe before they beat the Ottawa Center. So talk. How do you feel about that? I feel like I don't have much of a roster to play with. Right now Travis connect knees out of line up. I believe sandhimes out of line up. This is not a playoff roster boys and if anything, they should be getting down on their hands and knees and kissing my ass at the fact that we're probably going to get a top three picked this year. It is exactly what we need in order to make this team a contender. We don't have a number one goalie. We don't have a number one demand. We don't have a number one sentiment. I'm the one who went to management and said, offer sheet Leo Carlson. So we can get a number one center and luckily Pat Verbeek fucking came to his senses and matched it. So I don't really know what you guys want from me other than the fact that you guys are all losers and and and Biss and that was there. And he fucking told you guys you guys were losing all you people and Biss and that's mentions. You had the opportunity to go say something to his face when he when TNT was there to start the year. They were all shaking hands getting autographs. You guys are a bunch of frauds. You're a bunch of frauds. Yeah. I also say, I kind of want them to be good when the flyers are good, buddy. That place is electric. I played in the playoffs in that building. It's unreal. The orange crush and then you got you got 2010. They make that run and Kane scores in OT, but what an electric arena. The fans, they're passionate as Keith said, but you guys think, okay? And I'm trying to think of ways that you wouldn't think and I can't think anyways, okay? We go back to what the problem is. What? Well, Michko leads a team in scoring. I think Michko showed up a little skinny this season. I think he was a little too skinny to get him some cheese sticks. The GLP ones, it should have been not lose 30, maybe lose 15, right? If you lose too much, you got no power on too much weight. He's got a little bit of a clock lock and people are going to talk about how he's leading the team in scoring, but I thought he showed up a little too skinny. I don't want to see Michko's abs. No, I like to see a little bit of a punch belly, kind of like Jans. Yes. Exactly. And you talk about acne on my russians. No abs. Well, acne on the russians is how I roll. You talk about like the building and the electricity inside. Like, did you watch the end of the game the other night when they finally got their first win? Like the last two minutes. Yeah, obviously they were hemmed in their zone a little bit, but the crowd was going absolutely insane, like having fun cheering the guys on. Like, let's just do that. Let's focus on, you know, cheering these guys on seeing a decent product that's not a good
product right now because they're not going to make playoffs, but guys, they're trying their hardest. They're just not the team that you think they are. They're trying their fucking balls off. And I know you people in Philadelphia are all, you know, your biggest hero is a made up person named Rocky Balboa. It's fake human mean. It's a movie. You're giving out the gloves for that. They made a statue of him too. I like the gloves. The glove handover player of the game is a great little handle. There's no Washington's. We'll talk about that in a second, but, uh, man, remind you coach, coach, yeah, myself, I lead the NHL in the history in Gordy Howl Hatchers with 18. So if any of you flyers fans that are in Paul Bissinets mentions, want to fucking actually come and beat him in person, let him know because like you said, yeah, there's a lot of positivity in the building, but flyers fans accounts like flyers nation, uh, uh, Tony S. Cargo, these people don't show up to the rink. They don't handle anything face to face. They just want to live on the internet and bitch and moan and be fucking miserable. So kiss my ass. You've been going with that S. Cargo guy for a couple of years now. I feel like he's still DM me sent and shit to my house, uh, coach final thing for me. Yeah. Are we considering getting rid of the new look glasses? No, 'cause just like our D, I think it's making the women in the crowd horny. Okay. I don't know if you heard Rick school the other day and yeah, but I stole out from Paul Bissinets by the way. I can't say it. I can't say it. I can say it. I can say it. All the women in flyers nations, I mean, they got flood warnings in the lower ball because of these glasses. So I still can't get over that the panthers just get a natural hat trick every single game. Natural haddies, which I thought I thought had to be in one period. I was incorrect. It just has to be three in a row spread over. It could be it could be after an intermission. I thought it had to be in one period, but I was I was wrong on that. So the panthers, yep, Wednesday night. That'll be a lot of fun. The other news that kind of came out of the weekend was Gavin McKenna and the Leafs. And now there's a former Leafs fan that's been saying oilers, Leafs cup final. I mean, I didn't really get where he got. Now Leafs are there, there's pretty mid team. They look a lot like well, first of all, like from a non bias perspective, they're very exciting to watch. Okay. Chris and I have heard now, obviously, the defense is leak and oil and it's, you know, he's their best shutdown defenseman. He helps with the PK. He sacrifices the body to block shots. This situation, this was so fucking dumb is what I will say. So they're up two goals the other night and they have the game in complete control. It's against the Buffalo Sabers, right? That was the game. They lost. If you go and watch all of the six and a half minutes that McKenna played, he was snapping it around. Dude, I just watched it before we started. He looked awesome. There was nothing going on. Mind you in that game, John Poveras ends up going down with a lower body injury. I believe he's weak to weak now. So I believe Hiller's explanation of this is they got it to a little bit of penalty trouble towards like the middle half to end of the second period. So all of a sudden, we know that McKenna is not a penalty killer. He ends up riding the pine a little bit. So then you go in between periods, okay, he hasn't seen the ice in however long. He doesn't get a shift the entire third period. He played six and a half minutes. He was on the bison at plan for that game. He must have been like, what, what did I do? Buddy, they showed his last shift, which I think he set up two plays. He was fucking. He had a half breakaway. He, what? He had a half breakaway on his last shift. He almost scored. But you could go through the whole tape. I don't know if he made one mistake in his six and a half minutes. He made one. They scored. It was the goal. He kind of got dangled in the middle of the ice in the neutral zone. He got dangled a little bit. They made a play and then somebody went to Quinn scored. It was Jack Quinn's goal. It was like it was three layers behind that after the fact it wasn't completely on him. We have an 84, 84 game season here. And we're in game seven or eight here and you're fucking playing this guy six and a half minutes and you sit on the second half of the game where if anybody who's listened to this goes and watches the tape, that was his only mistake of the game. And outside of that, I would say he created way more opportunities, four or five opportunities in that game to make up for the one mistake as if nobody else makes any fucking mistakes on that team. And then to hear his explanation afterward, I don't know man. That is. So let me read. Let me read. Let me read it. This is when I was nothing situation into a fucking situation and sure enough, they had a blown a two goal lead and lose five, four and over time where I believe own power got his second over time goal of the season. And he looks unbelievable. Unbelievable. 10 points already. 10 points. Second in the NHL ice time, I will give that guy the biggest double rister after you talk about Hiller's post game comments. So Hiller said, we went for a stretch. I think we had those penalties. I wanted to get him out there. I love when coaches are like, I wanted to get him out there. It's like with Hazy like we had two lineups. We had two lineups. He sat through the penalties and then I didn't get him out there through that stretch. And then in the last few minutes of the period, we're just trying to get out of the period. I guess you would say, then I've sat him for so long and he sits in the intermission. So I probably should have got about there early in the third. I didn't saw talk to him about it. When I saw that, I was like, this kid's 18. And what do you think? He's 47 years old. And he's got to get a heat pack on it back. Yeah. What are you talking about? He just sat there in the intermission. You're in it. You're now in a game with Buffalo. He's either lying or he's just an idiot and I don't think he's an idiot. So I don't get, and I think he was asked, I think he was asked what he thought of his game. He said, it was okay. So obviously the clips you guys are talking about, he just thought they were okay. But juice. I'll send him to you. Juice. I can't let the exact same thing you just said. He's fucking 18, buddy. It's not like he's, it's not like he's 47 needs the Michelin man heat packs on him to get out there and needs to ride the bike in between periods if he hasn't seen a shift for 10 minutes. It's such a, like, to hear like all he was just okay, like, that's, I don't know, man. It goes back to like maybe the lack of accountability when he was in L.A. for challenging that goal. And then having all five of his guys line up at the far blue line waiting for them to just break the puck in and work on their D zone against Connor McDavid and the five man fucking cycle unit. I'd be, I'd be more worried if I'm a fan of Toronto of what's going on behind the bench. Because yeah, there's four coaches. There's eyes in the sky. Someone's going to be like, Hey, Gavin, how's it got a shift to virus is out. We need a goal. Let's get him out there. Yeah, you need a goal. And like I said, I watched all the chef one mistake. Everybody makes mistakes during a game. You can't sit a guy for that. If he's doing something like he made a bigger mistake in the, what was the next game against the islanders, he got lost in the defensive zone, but he played 17 minutes that game. I think that, I think that he, he didn't like his game. And he was like, I'm not playing him the rest of the game. There's no way that this guy actually was like, Oh, he didn't play at the end of the second. And now he's sitting during intermission. I can't play him a third that that makes absolutely no sense. It has to be like, I'm not playing him the rest of the game. I'm going to teach him a lesson. If I was Hiller, if he thought he was that fucking cold, I would have been in there massaging his fucking quads at the fact, like, fucking, you do something about it. Fuck, like come on, he brings him a coffee. This was a sit, nobody know, everybody's already bitching at the fact that he's not, not on the first P P unit, like read the room, buddy. Read the room. Like this guy is your future. And you're like, how did they only dress 11 forwards that game to against the islanders? No. Against Buffalo, no, against Buffalo in that, in that, in that game, I don't think so. But either way with, with Tavares down, they were down to 11 forwards. So now all of a sudden, you're going 10 forwards in the third against the Buffalo Sabers to try to close out a win. That reeks of trying to hang on just like they did in that series. When are you going against the oilers when he was with LA? When are you going to learn your lesson? I, I just couldn't believe the quote, like, oh, he's cold. It's like what he's called makes no sense. Like you're getting off in the fall seven in the morning, he's fucking buzzing around. Like is he one of those old school coaches that is like, hey, these young guys need to learn. They need to learn on the fly and like, but like, that's not the way the game is. And Merle says it all the time on the group chat is like, the game has passed some of these guys. Or is it, I honestly do, do not have an explanation for it. I went back, like I said, went back and watch it. There is zero reason about he sat absolutely zero. Another guy that was sat, this was very surprising to me, um, health bombed the door of in Boston. So Marco Sturm was very upset at a penalty took against Anaheim. So he actually scratched him first, the game against the Kings. Now, the start, the Bruins have had, they look awesome. I mean, you got a goalie made a dad suit looks great. Hey, guns looks solid. That little Russian, who cuts the dean off, flies around. Just as pasta once again, but everything's going smooth and I was very surprised that you'd be willing to kind of shake up what was finished off as a perfect way.
usco's trip and scratch the door off, but I guess looking at it, he's trying to set the tone for a team and like, he's not dealing with any nonsense. And if you're doing shit, he doesn't agree with no matter who you are. He'll sit you down, but I didn't see that coming. I was like, wow, that's kind of the ballsy move on a win streak to really kind of shake it up and scratch the door off. Who must have been fuming? Who's agent that on Twitter? Yeah. Why was Toronto mentioned in that tweet? That's what I didn't get a Toronto fan being secret was like, Hey, this wouldn't happen in Toronto. Dan Milstein quote tweeted it was like, you're right. It wouldn't happen. No, he just would be sad. If you get, if you get in the pool, I liked the, I love the door off. I think he's great for this team, but this, the brewing steam of like led the NHL in penalties the past two seasons, the door off has to, the door off has led the NHL. And it wasn't one penalty. He got a second penalty immediately after the first one where you have to set like a precedent on this team. Like, you can't just let that shit happen over and over. You can't spend half the game in the penalty box. So I like it. I think if he's continues to sit, that's an issue. Then it's like, all right, now we have a problem here, but you got Connor Clifton, you can jump in there and take his spot. So I don't think it's a big deal at all. My thing with that compared to the Toronto situation, I bet the Bruins is main one of their main focus coming into this season was let's not take as many penalties as we did last year. Marco Stern was trying to set a precedent that we are not going to take dumb penalties to hurt our self, shoot ourself in the foot. Wait, you mentioned the Nick Saban documentary the other day. He had a, uh, one of a stud player that did something messed up. He was like, I had to kick him off the team. I had to set, you know, which way our program was going. And Marco Stern is new to that job. He's still, you know, a year in, but he has to get his point across where it's, hey, we're not going to take these penalties. And if it, if you do, it doesn't matter if you're big Z or, you know, the seventh guy Clifton, you're going to sit for a game. And, you know, I, I kind of respect it. I'm sure it was a tough conversation him and Z had, but I'm sure it was two grown men having. It's like, hey, you're not going to play tomorrow, come back ready next game. And, you know, let's, let's play a clean game. And then they win again. I know accountability, obviously the perfect time to be able to play that bullet. Right. When, when your team's playing the way they are, and, and the person it is is nobody's above the team. And it's obviously rubbed off on that group. And like, I feel like Z's the type of guy that'll be water off a duck's back and he'll be back battling. Now, yes, he does take a lot of penalties. I would say sometimes it's a little unfair. Some of the calls just how big he is and how he can manhandle guys. I do feel like those tend to go away the closer you get to play off time. So you don't really want him losing his edge. He's a guy where when he's playing with that edge, he's a better player. And last thing I'll say about the Bruins boys and not being on the Leafs wagon. I'm kind of happy for them. I'm really, I'm really happy for the Bruins in the way that tattoo Carlo trade is, is like you make crazy. And then like, you just pull up the standings right now in Boston's leading division and Toronto's pied for last. We have their first round pick. We got the thing too. It's not protected this year. So if the lease fall off a cliff and it could end up being better than last year, could you imagine that potter looks great. You guys like and that's that's creating another big conversation around Boston because you have to pay Pavel Zaka at the end of the season. Everyone said Matt potter is a top six guy. They need him to get in there on the top six. Everyone said that. Everyone in Boston. Yeah. I'm saying everyone's in Boston has been saying like, you got to give him top six minutes because you're playing him on the bottom six. And that's not this type of player he is. I like their fourth line a lot too, G. They're exciting to watch, causing havoc. That Castelink said thug, dude. I love his game. Fight again the other night. Yeah, he did. Yeah, he did. Castelick did he fought again. I got L.A. It's texted right away. He said that that Castelick's a thug like in like a positive. Yeah. It's fucking. He's awesome man. He fought Lamel Bryan in Utah. Well, I mean, not to completely shift over to people who are completely nauseated by the Edmonds or others, but that fight between being in Frederick. Fight it. He fought Hellaniac. He fought. Sorry. He has fought Hellaniac on L.A. Um, uh, basically, I thought McDavid was going to drop. There was a little bit of us. Uh, it was right after he doesn't want to call. He's not hungry enough quickly. Just because Pasha, this idiot, he says the Bruins are on the biggest PDO bender in the league by a wide margin. 14 point at goals above expected regression coming. Fuck up, dude. I love Pasha to death, but shut the fuck I know. You know, you know what the Bruins do? They'll actually get to the inside and get around the blue paint because God forbid one of them get there. They'll be. They're going to. Oh, hey, yeah. I was pumping the Rangers and then you guys waxed them, but then you got your faces kicked in by the capitals in that in that day game Saturday. Absolute like a face of face beat down, like just, just right to the nose all day. So maybe the right chart, like you say, and then you play it a legit team to cut the shit with PDO bender or goals above expected. We don't even know what it means. So shut up. They scored. And that fight, McBain and Fredrick, that was about as old school as you're going to get these days, I think, and I thought Fredrick was in one off the start. I was like, oh, McBain look, he was throwing those hammer rights. He's a monster, by the way. And then Fredrick turned it around. That was incredible. And like, I know Fredrick's taken a lot of heat, right? I don't think it's gone as the way a lot of people thought it would go, but when he's doing that and he's running around, it's like, holy shit, like that's an element that they didn't have. But McBain, I'm impressed by him. Like I, he's always been willing to do this, but I feel like he's doing it more now. Am I wrong? I think that fighting's on the uptick. I think that if Pasha could give us one analytic that we actually fucking care about, it's that. So do your fucking digging in your lab over there with your stupid. What do you call those things? Computers? No, but the data center, he's got his own data center there. And it's fucking stupacondo and Vancouver above dovetail. It's the stars guy sending out his ad. He starts his portion the whole apartment turns on. It's like the devil stats coming out of a printer. But so first of all, Fredrick, I feel like that's the type of fight and that'll ignite the fan base to get back on your side. I feel like that like the deal has looked bad. So far, I've given him an eight year deal, but that's hopefully he can gain some confidence from that, start chipping it off offensively. And kind of maybe if he could basically do what Janol was doing for the Bruins, that's what the expectation was when they got him and they traded for him. As far as McBain, there are few guys that are grumpy pieces of shit out there and it's true to their core. And that's what I love about him. He looks miserable there where he's trying to take your head off and he's playing for keeps every night. I love him as a bottom six player and Utah has a good one. And he's almost got that old and old and where he's just like grumpy all the time and just like, and he can clearly throw hammers. I think Fredrick, like, you know, you signed that big deal. What do you 30 million? 3.85 a year. Like he probably in his mind is like, I got to do some stuff offensively to earn this money. But I think for him, it's like just being a solid fourth liner, you know, taking that like nobody wants to hear like, Hey, dude, sorry, you're just the fourth liner, but at the end of the day, if you're playing of a chance to win and not living up to like not looking at the dollar amount and be like, okay, I got to get 15 goals, 30 points, like just worry about good shifts every game, fighting when you need to and not worrying about the money they make. Because at the end of the day, you're getting it no matter what. So good for him. And just if he plays like that, man, like there's no fan base that isn't going to love him. I did not know that Jack McBain's dad Andrew McBain played 608 NHL games eighth overall pick in 1983 years of 32 goals and 37 goals with the Winnipeg Jets. Those years also over 100 penalty minutes. So I wasn't aware. I wasn't where he's get the pedigree. Get a dad who taught him how to play the game the right way. And that's what he does. But that fight was electric and Edmonton went into that building and McDavid put a he's put on a show every night. That was that was fucking crazy. And I will apologize to absolutely nobody for talking about the oilers the way I am right now. He's the first player to have 23 points in eight the first eight games of the year since Mario Lemieux. And I think Stoff said an emphatic note to him getting 200 points. I know. I'm like, dude, he's got two extra games. It's crazy. It's crazy. It's I think his he had he had the most points 50 years or something like right around that. That's the most points. There's Ben. I want to say in 20 years in the cap. I think yeah. The cap. I'll okay. So the fact that like I told you my bet the 386 points. I need this heater to continue to have a chance at winning that bet. That was Bouchard Drysidle and and and McDavid combined it for 386 points. It's a little ridiculous but you never know. And and for the way he's doing it. He's fucking lying. He's always flying. But when he came when he went down to who's the defense and he went wide on it. We got one. He's going so fast that even the amazing goal is doing the splits. The tall guys doesn't matter. He's still going to tuck it right. He doesn't even need to lift the puck in his back.
can he can just put it right next to your pad because he's going to 20 miles an hour. How he extends like that. He always just slips it by the pad, you know, like you said, he doesn't elevate it. He always somehow gets it, just pass the pad and tucks it in like the other night. You're like, Oh, was that a tosafe and he's just like, and you can't even tell if he's score because he doesn't even celebrate anymore. I know. I need him to celebrate harder. It's just man on a mission. Put his arms down. He feels bad for lightening his goal is up. If he, if he's able to do this for another six, seven seasons, like we have to have the car. I even Wayne would say it, this is the greatest hockey player ever exists, like no Stanley Cups, I know, but that's going to change soon with the cock behind the bench. This is like, this is pure domination, guys, like everybody, like these guys don't have summer jobs, right? I think, too, that the cock, uh, well, cock gave a, and it was stuff who asked the question. He's like, we need a little bit more scoring from the bottom six or how do you get more offense from the bottom six and the cox, like, yeah, you're up, you're up, you know, you get a chance they're out. They're one and done. We got to get some chances. We got to control the puck. He said, you got to what was his line? He goes, you're stick, what, what do you, your sticks got to be a crowbar heavy sticks heavy on pox and then did mention that the offensive zones, the fun zone, chill in the fun zone, do what you want in the fun zone, the defensive zones, the works on. So you can laugh at my orders discussion and people said, I said, Mick David on Twitter's man on the mission is the greatest he's ever played, where was he in the cup finals game six and seven? Where was he in the gold medal game? I don't know. I don't know. I'm just watching what I'm watching right now. I've watched the guys his 12th season. This is the best he's ever looked. He's on a different level. At one point, he had more points than the flyers and coach talk it up there in the top left of my screen. So I saw the little dish to Leon. It was like a one handed little pastus and Leon in a breakaway. It's just a team that got beat by Utah at home and then they went down to Utah on the day that Ryan Smith didn't matter the Utah mammoth loss because BYU beat Notre name. I think he offered another million bucks to the kid on college game. I don't know if you saw that. I think he won three million bucks that kid and he got a second try at it. Three million bucks for making a field goal. So, yeah, it's always hockey. I mean, I'll say this so Vegas looks unreal. In Vegas. Vegas with that with their new coach and Eichel's Eichel's not far behind him. I think Eichel has 17 points right here is at 18. He looks unreal. They're Aiden Hills back and I saw Blutman. I think Blutman had tweeted Aiden Hill like move on from time to get rid of this guy. Thanks for the stand. They should have played in the Stanley Cup finals to give themselves a chance to win when I was told that I was a fucking moron. Interesting. Eichel's got 18 points. Going back to Edmonton, like that first game against Utah, I thought Utah did a really good job. Obviously they get the win, but I was thinking watching that next game. You have to play this team and play off because that first game, they just wore them down, right? They're just wearing them down and you could tell Utah was tired that next game. They gave up I think like five breakaways. That's a sign of your deed just being tired of shit the night before you had to play in Edmonton. You're running around. So playing them in a seven game series, like that was my thought watching. It's like, oh man, if you have to play this team in a seven game series, it's over. I just wanted to get off to a good start to the year. You know us guys in the room, we're just talking. We cannot have a slow start. I think last year through nine games, they were four, four, and one and it's a different club. It's the cock. It's Mick Jesus. It's Leon Leon and his wife with just an incredible Halloween costume too. Harry and Mark from home alone, Leon's got the one of those, what do you do to close? My wife does it. I don't do it. Iron. Got the iron on his forehead. Remember it dropped on, on Harry. So everything's coming up, oilers and you can keep complaining and you can keep DMing me. I'm going to keep talking about him. I'm going to keep watching him. I'm going to keep talking about him and you're jealous. You're jealous. There's probably some fires fans in there that have to watch that thing, that absolute stench. The stench of the fires people hate me for talking about the oils. I'm talking about elite level hockey, where to the likes of which we haven't seen since Mario Lemieux. So how are you not supposed to talk about it? Look at that Halloween. Amazing. Amazing. Leon? That's Leon. What a guy. That's Leon. He's got the spider on his shoulder. That's big time. I saw Ovi and his wife. Ovi was a beer and his wife was, you know, an attractive woman. So good for Ovi. He's winning in all aspect, yeah, a missile. Uh, but hey, so I, I hate to continue to talk about the Edmonton or others here because people are proud. Thank you. I was going to move on. Their eyes are just rolling to the back of their head as they're listening to this punching. They're steering well. You got some love from a UFC, I saw that. He was the guy who was like delegating, you didn't know, or whatever. The weigh-ins and the face-offs where Michael Malod, who I don't know how many people are familiar with the UFC. This guy's like an up-and-comer. I believe he does have the belt now where he hasn't been around like forever, right? He hasn't, like, he's only got like 120,000 people on Instagram. So he's not extremely well known in the UFC universe, but it's clearly making an aim for itself. He knocked out this like Buckley guy about the knee hit him with. He got him with a knee and a knockout. And this Michael Malod's brother plays for the Anaheim duck. So they were all watching this, this knockout. But when the, the night before in Edmonton, when they were doing this, the, the, what do you call it? The face-offs. The guy on the mic was wearing an Edmonton oil is Ryan Whitney jerseys. I saw that and, and I was blown away. I mean, the fact is the guy chose my jersey number six, Ryan Whitney. He's got 29. He's got 97. He's got two. He's got all these different options, 93 shout-out news. And he wears number six. So that guy, what a guy, what a, now does he work for UFC or is he like, he has to, he has to. What a guy. He's a good fan and he must be an Irish fan because there's probably like, what, five people that own that jersey and now maybe he doesn't own it and he found it in the lost and found and he threw it on. But nonetheless, I appreciate you. And that clip of the ducks watching, watching that knockout was on, because it's one thing, like, you know, when you're on the bench and like dying, your team gets in a fight and you're standing up and you're kind of like talking in the middle of the fight. If they're close to the bench, I get him to see your brother in the midst of a UFC fight and see him knock out somebody with a flying knee to the temple. Like, these kids are swinging their fucking power sticks around now. I mean, the excitement that his brother and you could tell all the ducks felt that was an electric clip. They were very smart for setting up that camera and I have them watching the file, a live stream action. But what a knockout, what a jersey to wear it the way in and everything's coming up, oilers and wit. It was a bad year last year. What's happening now? We're watching Mario Lemieux, part two, Connor McDavid. How does it end with a cup? Yes, it does. So you could complain, like I said, but I'm going to keep talking. Did you see that that buckley guy who he knocked out at the weigh in and face off? No. He wouldn't. He wouldn't shake his hand. I don't really get that. And then a lot just did this. All right. And then clean him up. Dude, how about did you see Malat's interview after the match, too? Like, they started booing the buckley guy and he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa. We don't boo. Let's celebrate. Like just a classic Canadian, true Canadian, the Canadian flag and the place was going bananas. You know, who had a great time in Edmonton was Strickland, the UFC fighter. Did you see the clips? I am running around downtown Edmonton. No. And then he went to the game against Utah. Why not ask him who fights? Of course, the fight happens in Utah. That fight happened with him in the barn. He would have by jumped on the ice. Yeah. Yeah. He was having fun in Edmonton. That's for sure. I will be on. I'm running after him. I will. I will be honest. I will be honest. He's saying. I will be honest, though, that the game against Utah in Edmonton, it wasn't a sold out barn. And I was all over Vegas who have not sold out. I think they broke their streak and apparently it has something to do with the team's not letting like ticket brokers buy tickets. I don't know exactly, but I think the prices in Edmonton are a bit out of control. Yes, think. Really? What's it to get in the gate? It's fucking 20 bucks for a hotdog. I think it's 70 bucks for a hat somebody was saying to me. Jesus. And then they are expected to throw it when you get a hat trick every game from McDavid or fucking Leon or Boosh. So we're going to have to keep an eye out, we're going to have to, as my, my, my guys over on the trap draw say we're going to have to monitor that situation. That's it. That's all we're getting about the ticket sales. They're too high everywhere, buddy, like people can't afford to go to games. I, I think it's too late. I think they got to start playing games at five o'clock in the afternoon. I think people don't want to be out late. Like if you're, no, it's, it's not dad. It's fucking the middle of the week. I think it's hard to get people invested with 84 games where you, we're not even starting playoffs for another six months. So you want me to start shilling out 400 bucks for a regular season ticket tickets aren't at sheep right? I mean, aren't, aren't that expensive right now, guys? Like I'm looking at the wild verse oilers game Tuesday night and it's $40, $40, $70, $60.
$60, $60, like tickets, you can sit right behind the net for $107 like, I don't know, I don't, that's not that crazy. Is that real sale? This is on a notorious, I can't say the name of the website, but it's a, it's a big website. Is it a resale website? No, it's not. Oh, yeah, but even on, even on the cheaper tickets, you're going to these buildings, then you want to get like Biz said, a hot dog and a t-shirt and everything, yeah. It's everything. Going to a game you're minimum, what, $500, yeah, and every single year, the prices go off everywhere. So, I mean, these guys got to get paid somehow, but we don't want to start seeing buildings not full. That's not good. That's not good at all. And we're talking about two of the hottest teams in the league right here in Vegas and Edmonton. I'm quickly going back to Vegas where I said we'd get off to a slow start. I believe they're eight and two right now. That Ryan Craig, man, he had the three P suit on the other night. He's fucking looking. I know. He's asked about it. He said, it's a saturday night in Vegas. He did look great. He did look great, but I call holy shit. And it's like nobody's really talking about it because of what McDavid's doing. But we have to because I call it some points, going to get a hundred points now. Yeah. I think they like it that way. They don't care. Talk about everybody else. They get to save their energy and fly under the radar. Yeah. That's a good point. But like with that skill at some point, one of these years, it's going to be a hundred and ten point season for Jack Ikels to have this start. You would think this would this would finally be the time where he just pops off like offensively. I mean, he does it in the playoffs every year, but you'd think one regular season, he'd just go nuclear. And then you start like this. I think it would be it would be this season. Another we mentioned that the Rocky gloves for the Flyers player of the game when they have one. Yeah. The capitals, the capitals bringing out OVs is it is rookie year CCM with the tent advisor. Yeah. That's the best post game player of the game award I've ever seen. The fact he's the legend of the game and you get to put that thing on. My question to you guys on the group chat was, why did he ever get rid of the tent advisor? Was that a league not letting him use it anymore? Yeah. Yeah. I really want to use it. Patar had a certain tent. His tent was aggressive to the point where it was the mere tent. Yes. Like that. Fasten the furious. Over from the cops. Yeah. It is right there. Things. Beautiful. I. Who is that OV? It's him. Is it? No. No. No. No. I think that it might have been PLD or maybe one of the other options who go back. No. Look at the gusty. That ain't him. That's OV boys. No. No. No. He doesn't wear that sleeve. No. Well, I mean, if he showed a Pazer from like 1996 through those who knew who's number 73 on their team. Oh, Dayharnay. Yes. Dayharnay then. Yeah. Oh. Did he should be able to wear that visor for his last year or at least the last game? Whatever. He should be able to do whatever he wants. Yeah. He does. Yeah. He would go with a visor if he could shoot himself off a steroids or a little bit with the unzipped pants, the jersey tuck, the tinted visor, his look. He was ahead of his time. Yeah. He was like flying Tesla car. And it was at a time when they didn't want guys to show that personality and he was like, I'm showing my personality and he did it. I mean, if you can rock doing that your first year coming into the league when he did it is so balsy, it's unbelievable. It's legitimate. Feeding out Sid for rookie of the year. All right. Let's throw it now to Kirk Muller, a legend of the game. Oh, actually, I wanted to say 2015 draft, McDavid Eichel. Are we going like, so Ovee and Malcolm is the best one to ever, right? Would you agree? Uh, yeah, I think there was also, um, there was also what was the other one I looked up that was incredible. Uh, sorry. Let me check this. Let me check this. We go set. Glory. And then stall. I think it was 71. Okay. Gila Florent, Marcel Dionne and 71. That's a good one. And then you got 2004 Ovee, Malcolm and 2015, McDavid Eichel. And interestingly enough, another one mentioned was 1984, Mario Lemieux first at Kirk Muller second. Okay. But let's right now throw it over to a guy that's spoken of as maybe one of the best one, two parts. Several was that because the first one was Mario Lemieux, maybe, maybe, but right now, right now Kirk Muller guys, we got to talk draft Kings here. We are very pleased and lucky to be joined now by Kirk Moller Stanley Cup champ six time all star second overall pick in 1984 after Mario Lemieux, what's going on, Kirk? Thanks for joining the show. Yeah, she's privileged to be with you guys, you know, and listen to that. That was going to say thank God I went after Mario, not before. Well, going second now, you're in the category of what is the best one to combo of all time. So we were just talking about this before you came on that we were saying, wow, McDavid and Ikel were the same draft, Ela Flur and Dion were the same draft and then this is according to the internet, we got to mention Mario Lemieux and Kirk Moller, we just said I think the first guy might have carried a little bit away, but you did have 970 points. So who might have said anything? Well, you know, actually, there's a real good draft overall, you know, you had, you know, Brett Hollen there, you know, Patrick Wahn. So there's some pretty good guy. So if you really redid the draft, it might change a little bit. That's all right. Don't fuck. I mean, let's take it up. So you have to, I don't, I don't tell my grandkids or my kids that, but you're from Kingston and you're, you just mentioned you're still there now, okay? So this is the first time in a long time that you haven't been at a camp or on in an NHL locker room. How does it feel to be, I guess, not nearly as busy and just chilling a little bit right now? Yeah. It's, you know, what? It was just, I knew a year ago was just the right time to kind of just step back for a bit. And so I was prepared for it and now that the, you know, the training camp started and the season started it, that was real a test, right? It was like, okay, how do I feel? But I'm fine. I'm good with it. You know, it's just, it's just a nice break, you know, it's nice get up in the morning and take your time. I remember a coffee and, you know, it's a great time of year up here in Ontario, live it on the lake with the, you know, the fall and the leaves change and all that and I've been down to a game. I actually were right in the middle. I've been to a Montreal game already. I've been to a Toronto game. I've been to an Ottawa game. So, so yeah, so I hit three live games. Like, you know, I set the stands and get my beer and enjoy the game and generally able to do that in Montreal. No, much. I'm a little different. Yeah. No. No. No. I kind of hide a little bit there. Yeah. You got it. You got it. I mean, we talked, actually, I'd like to bring up because lie load line, right? Like, it was horrible news that he passed away, but I know he meant to ton to that team when you guys won it all. I didn't know if you had any memories of him as a player and a guy. I was lucky enough, my rookie year. He was all veteran on Pittsburgh and just we were.
We were chatting about him last week and I just didn't know if you wanted to say anything about Ody. Yeah. You know what? I'm heading down Friday actually to Pittsburgh for the celebration of life and just, you know, that team would say we won the cup with a 93, put it in perspective, we never claimed that we're in the most talented or best team. But I think a guy like Ody, you know, the pitify with that group was all about, you know. He was a teammate, he's got, he had everyone's back, he was a competitor and he was, you know what? He was actually the, I don't know if people realize that, you know, at that time, like he killed powder, he's played power play on that team, obviously he played against the best players play with Matthew Snyder and, but aside from all the, you know, the on ice stuff that he contributed to and obviously, all tough he was, you know, he was just a great friend and, you know, tough loss in that manner. Yeah. Yeah. And I never had the chance to meet him, but he's one of those guys that I really wish I did, but everyone said, oh, you just wish you had a beer with him or, you know, got to sit in a locker room with him, just like a true guy's guy. Oh, you know what, we, a little story about Ody just to give you an example was, much y'all's don't want to be one of the, you know, cities that, you know, has a lot, most hard stuff. I think maybe in our North America. So it was, it was, it was pretty common believe and I thought that guys would get the car stolen in that city and they might keen had his car stolen and we're walking down the street. There's a Super Bowl Sunday and Ody and I were coming over the restaurant where we watched it and I don't know why it was raining and much y'all had during Super Bowl very odd, but there was, it was pouring some guy greasy hair along here goes running biases and I know where my keen's car is and he kept running. Well, Ody chases them down, catches them and and I'm like, oh geez, here we go. And as he catches them, the guy goes, hey, I'm only kidding, I'm an undercover cop and I was like, oh, my God, no, this isn't happening. And he goes, well, come on, let's get all the rain and get a beer and we'll stay there. The guy goes, I know you're tough Ody, but you know, I can take you pretty quickly. I'm like, no boy, oh boy, we go, he goes, we're going to the back yard in the alley and whoever, whoever loses buys the other guy ball of champagne and I'm like, up they go and if they go and I look at the bartender, I'm like, this isn't happening. I can't get out there. The time I got out there, Ody's got the guy head in a mud puddle. I got a job on Ody going, no, no, getting away. I said, I pulled the car and got the champagne, just go home, just go home and you know, sparkler's in the back alley. He's not leaving. He buys me that champagne. That's your champagne. Oh, the best. He was a great, great team guy. You said you guys had some good young stud defenseman on that team. So Chelly was there, right? No, that was a lady. Just got trained. That was Danny. Yeah. Okay. Shnides was there. You said Eric Desjardin, you know, Kevin Holler, you know, Snides, you know, Ody, JJ Daniel. It was a whole, yeah. Yeah. We used to do drills and practice and it would be the fours that I have to do laps in the deep. They would, they would blow us away. We're like, we're the only team of the defense. We're faster than the fours. They were, they're, they're, they're, it was built that way. So we had, yeah, they were underrated group of six guys. What a team that was. We were lucky enough, we sat down during four nations in March, we're all with, uh, with Vincent Dan Fouce and it was incredible. He was giving us some memories and then looking at those, the stats. I mean, you and him that year. That was a monster season. I think you had one year higher than 94 points, right? If I look here, uh, I know you're 94 and 94. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I never know. 94 points in Jersey then is like 315 now. Yeah. Well, I had to play, I had to play with the, uh, oh, the time in Jersey was, was great because that's where I started, you know, and I actually got there before a Lou. Uh, but, you know, you think back at all the gains change. I like, I mean, I broke it in 84 and, you know, you're sitting there and I, we had, we had young guys. We're in a mix of like the John McLean's and Papa Beaks and myself. And then there's really hardly anyone in the 20s. And then you had guys at the end of the career like Mel Bridgeman and Chico Resh and Dave Lewis, Bobby Lormer, uh, Phil Russell into my memory, walk into the, uh, bathroom after my first period and the first game and all that. And you got about five of them having a cigarette going, man, those guys are four check in tonight. Uh, that's the NHL, you know, there was a recent photo that came out of like, after a Montreal, Canadians win, a major hack and darts. And there was like girl servers, like dropping off beers in the room. Now, I'm not sure if that was AI generated, but it looked like, like exactly when I would want to go back to time and play in the NHL, celebrating a dub in the locker room with the boys, just rip and victory darts. Having, having girls drop off some, some nice cold beverages, train leaves in 20. Yeah, exactly. Uh, going back though to that cup run in Montreal, so you like tore your collarbone up game one in the first round against, uh, the Quebec Nordics. Yeah, Mike Ricci hit me with a nice, clean, open, nice head, very first shift and came back and tore it and, uh, you know, it's play. Obviously, you guys all know all that stuff. And, you know, Dr. Mulder is with the halves for like 40 years, maybe 50. I think he, I think he's stitched up rocket. And I said, well, what do you do, doc? And he goes, well, it's torn right off. So, but I can inject, inject you here. And, uh, where you go. So after the games you play, it's fine. You don't, but that next day when that stuff comes out, it's like, you're, you're frags about that one arm, right? It's like, it's just, it's just like a flabber arm there or whatever, but, uh, but it's worth it. It's worth it. Damn. So the whole, the whole run after game one, you were getting shot up before every game. Yeah, you're downplaying this a little bit. That like even tire, to even tire skates with that type of injury is savage mode. It was a, it was a bugger. Yeah, it was, uh, you know, and, uh, I'm lucky today. I'm pretty good. Uh, the body's moving pretty good, but there's definitely some arthritis kicking in that one. But, uh, but unless it's, you know, everyone, everyone paid the price obviously. And those, you know, you go, that was a great thing about the playoffs. You know, during the season, you have two or three guys in the trainers room after games and you get into those playoff games. That's what people miss, right? As seeing like, you know, now you're up to 16 guys. And it's almost like if you're not in there after a game and playoffs, you're, you, you must get kicked out in the first two minutes for, for some reason. So, so what's crazy about that year too, is you guys end up meeting, uh, you guys end up meeting, uh, finals. Yeah. I mean, uh, well, so everyone was really anticipating the Toronto much y'all, uh, finals. And to this day, I mean, it is, I mean, again, I live in Kingston in between both cities, but, you know, all you hear about is that, you know, that call that wasn't made, you know, Wayne, you know, with, uh, Dougie and, uh, you know, but it's that it happened and, uh, you know, it was like game seven in Toronto. Of course, Wayne does his thing and comes rolling in and I said, Oh my god. And you know what happened is a lot of the median Toronto kind of said something like Wayne slowing down, whatever. Bob McKenzie. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. The bobble. Well, guess what? We all know what, what happens when 99, you know, here's that. So they come rolling in. We were sitting, we were sitting for like eight or nine days, uh, for the Stanley Cup finals. It was like what, uh, Carolina was experienced, uh, which I'm not a big fan of, of today, that big gap, but they come rolling in and, uh, you know, joctumer's like, okay, Kirk, you're lying, Brian Bellows and Jonathan Claire, you're going to go against Wayne and I go perfect. This is, this is great. You know, if you're going to finals, you play against greatest guy ever. Anyway, joct comes in before the game. He says everybody. And he's all excited and having wound up and he goes, uh, well, guys, this is what separates the men from the boys. So let's go boys. Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait. Let's move the men. Let's move the men. We, we roll every night. We lost. We lost. And guess who's run of stars? Wayne. So, uh, but, uh, but you know, I play with the guy, obviously, you guys don't care about key carbonyl. And so we had to make a big adjustment and, uh, it curves like, hey, listen, let me do my job. I'll play Wayne and it opened up for you and, uh, Johnny and, uh, Brian, you know, to be more offensive. So that, uh, there's a good switch on that part. But was he, was he trying to be funny or did he just fuck it up? Cause he's been trans, he was so his first, uh, standing cup finals and he's so wound up, you know, joct back then. He could fly it and that was this big speech. And we're like, yeah, we're in one shoot me up again, doc. This time right between the fucking temple. Um, were you guys more excited to be facing off against LA?
like, did you want that match up? Like because you obviously were sitting around watching game seven. Like, who would you have hand picked if you could have picked the team? L.A. You know what? I think Toronto, you know, I'd burns it. I coached myself and a bunch of us in Montreal prior to Toronto. So he knew our team well. Yeah. His, the style that burns the, you know, I, Toronto played it very similar to we did right at that time. And they matched up by probably, I would, I'd be honest, I, I talked to Wendell and Deggy and all those guys is like, they probably matched up better against us for sure. The other thing is we, again, you know, I always say that it's not always the best. You know, when it's a couple like we went three rounds and you think about it. We went to Quebec, we went to Long Island and we went to Buffalo, Edmonton. Or so, Wayne and L.A. went, I think Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto. Like, yeah, probably, and then they go game seven and then they come rolling in us. And they had the momentum, you know, they beat us that first game. Of course, Wayne lit it up and all that. But then over a long journey of that series, we're young. We had the legs and it caught up the L.A. and we won the cup. So that's why it's never always the best team that always wins. You know, it was, it was, you got to get the right matchup, finish your rounds early. And, and that's sort of how I kind of transpired that year with, I felt. But Toronto would have given us a tougher goal. Was that the year that Jock called the penalty for Mixor Lee's illegal curve? Yeah, that's something you guys were like aware of or in like waiting for the perfect time. Or because, or was it just like, all right, we noticed it in game two. Let's call it. Yeah, you know what, everyone, I mean, I did it. I, you know, illegal sticks I'd use for a couple periods. And then, you know, late in the third, you'd go, all right. And you'd see the traders exchange, get your legal sticks. At that time, we, we, we, uh, we hit it early is like, I think it was the second period, you know. So, uh, it didn't give, but we were, we had talked about it. You know, we're like, you know, you're, you're, you're looking at any edge and you could, you could tell that. I hate to say it, but the stick you could tell was, it was illegal, right. But I don't think a lot of guys were expecting to get called that early in the game. The part that actually is interesting is like, you know, it's one thing to call it. But you still have to score on it, right? Right. Or Eric, they shared in scored on that goal. So not only did, you know, Jack was bossy enough to call it the big, there was a big move. You know, we're down in that game or it's game two, we lost game one. This is all my trial. We go back to LA who knows we lose that second game. But that was a really, really crucial, uh, turning point that, uh, that Eric was able to score in that goal. Just a banana hook out there. And, and what was weird about it though is apparently he had backups that weren't illegal. Yeah. He just wants to forgot to swap him out, right? Cause at that point, they switched in the third. Yeah, probably didn't have the third. I think got him early. I think we got it early, you know, and, uh, before everyone starts, uh, you know, switching it, you know, late in the games and all that. So it, it, it, it worked out. Yeah. For sure. Then would your sticks come illegal? Would you get the torch on them and really bend them once they came in the Tony twist? Oh, yeah, you get the old, that torch going to get the, you don't get the foot on the, you know, the blades are bending it and work it. Would you do that? Oh, yeah, oh, yeah. Yeah, you know what? I had that, at that time, I had that, it was the, it was the, uh, two piece, the two piece stick. So we had the wooden blade with the, uh, and then the shot that, you know, it'd fit in. And actually I thought that was probably the best sticks I thought even today. Because you got the feel of the wood on the, on the, on the blade, but you got the, you know, the consistency and, you know, whatever, uh, flexibility you want your, your, your shaft to be was consistent, right? So, um, you know, I, I thought, do you guys agree? I thought, yeah, it was an ultra light and ultra light and Z bubble. Yeah. I don't know if they had those when he was playing, though, where you're using the Accretzky aluminum for the shaft. Uh, I was using the Eastern at the time. Yeah. They painted a red, white and blue, so it wasn't the King's colors and the finals. Like, oh, shit. And I have Wayne's stick already. I'm trying to cover them. Like, oh, oh, yeah. The only thing that sucked about those was how sometimes it would get loose. And then member Bauer came out with the blade attachment that had like the hooks on it to try to make. Do you remember when the blades would get loose? So you have to go tape over the end of the blade with the glue. But I can't imagine actually, like torch in my stick, stepping on it to it's a Johnny LeClaire curve. Like imagine telling McKenna, you had to curve his own sticks right now. These kids would be like, what the fuck are you talking about? They didn't even have to curve their own mini sticks. Like we do. They come with a curve now. Hey, also the amount of guys that were probably in the stick room before games. Oh, they just turned your length and, like, you're passing around the blowtorch. Oh, no, the pro pains out. We need another light cigarette blowtorch. I've ever seen now I afraid to get the all-star game sitting there. They were the torch lighting up the cigarette. Coleman the skull it. Coleman the six news everywhere is at the long air. Coleman the six strands of hair that he had that huge bald spot. It won't wait. What's the back story? I believe they're the all-star game was in Montreal when you were a Hab. And you were number nine and Rocket Richard was not happy. I was playing with much all the time and the all-star game wasn't much y'all. So we had a little alumni thing afterwards, just the Habs alumni. But be prior to the game, the NHL called me and said, Hey, listen, you know, Mark Messier, he's got seniority. I knew he's going to wear his 11 and I wore 11 and much y'all. And so they said, we'll give you your old number that you wore in Jersey number nine. I said, ah, fine, perfect. And no, that's no problem. So I played the game and I'll had to go up to the alumni room after and, you know, Steve shuts there in the floor and all these guys in the rocket. So the rocket goes, Hey, Kirk, can I talk to you? I said, yeah, sure, Rocket. You a Hab, and I said, yeah, you wear nine today? I said, yeah, don't make it a Habit. And he's just staring, you know, that famous photo of him with the glaring eyes, you know, the while he was staring at me and I was like, all right. Yeah, okay, I got it. And then I go over Steve's shirt and I go, I tell him the story. I go, was he kidding? And Shetty's like, no, it's okay. Well, I got a message delivered. So did you put, did you play in the game in that look? Yeah, yeah, the game was over. Oh, the game over. Yeah, that was saying, yeah, you wear nine, you wear nine, you mother fucker. Oh, damn, over her night. And it was given to you. So you got set up for, you got, you got set up. Yeah, completely bamboozled. I mean, Steve shot. Fucked out. I mean, I was having a dark closet, Kirk, come here. I know, yeah, I have to say though, that whole alumni down there, much y'all that like, you know, rock it as brother, bevel. Oh, they couldn't, like corn, why ain't like those guys, Bob Gatney. They can't be any class here. Like, they were so cool, like, you know, all the stuff that they won down there. And if I can, you know, we're down there playing, we're trying to win one cup, you know, and they never talked them with themselves. They were, they were the classiest group of guys, you know, whether, obviously, let's be honest, the other halves fan, or, you know, you don't like the halves, you know, anyone growing up or now or whatever. But I have to say those guys were super classy, classy group. Did you carry the flame last year, any of the games from Montreal? Yeah, I did. Yeah, against Buffalo. Yes, okay. Yeah, yeah, pretty cool. You know, it's a real honor, you know, and it was timing was, was perfect. I was just coming over the old, you know, thousand either bridge from the United States, the Canada and the season ended. I've just headed back to the lake and I get a call from Montreal, asking if, you know, if I'd come down and pass the torch. And I'm like, so it kind of reunited me with, you know, Montreal and next I, you know, I'm, you know, what the, you know, the playoffs and I'm staying outside and get this torch. And man, like, I didn't, I didn't see it yet because I just finished in Washington. And next I, you know, I've got this torch. I'm walking down the aisle and I walk out and it's like, you know, whatever, 21,000 people. I stared at you, you know, in the, in the, in the corridor and, and, you know, while they do presentations there. And I was like, it felt like I was like the gladiator coming out of the call to see you. We're the friendlier, friendlier crowd, I guess. I was gonna say, just going back to all those, like, those old school guys who are around, who'd won like nine, ten cups, wherever it was, like, who had the, the most aura? Like, who was the guy where, because like, I remember when we were in Pittsburgh, when Mario would walk into the room, it was just odd, like, how, like, the, just, like, the whole energy would just shift in the room. And like, he just had this, like, aura and presence about him. Who were the guys that, like, they just, like, they had it. Like, maybe the main guy. When John Bellable walked in, you know, and, and he, he came, his wife still to this day, like, goes to the games and they would come in and sit about three or four rolls behind the bench. When, when they walked down the aisle, like, you know, the two of them and entered the, the game, I, I think, I think, uh, Bellable was the guy that,
And it's like, wow, that's John Bellerville. And I mean, we're talking a lot of the greats. I mean, Rocket and all that. Rocket I think is, you know, he was obviously so dynamic and fiery and exciting and goal scorn. And I think people maybe have been a little scared of what he wanted to go up to. But I mean, they all had it. The Flare, Cornway, anything. But when John Bellerville walked into that old, much y'all form, there was a big presence. Big man, you know, and, you know, I was well dressed. And, you know, like those guys, all those guys, you know, you do an event, much y'all. Like you, you better have your shirt tie on. You know, whether it's in the summer golf tournament and those guys, they do not dress down with that group. I'm for sure. But even for you, guy that accomplished everything in the NHL, when you got that phone call and you just named off all the legends that have carried the torso, you must have been like, "Oh, holy shit, this is amazing." Yeah, I thought maybe there was a raffle or something, throw the knees in the ass. (laughing) I called four people and they all said, "No, I need you." Couldn't get through to them. Call number nine. (laughing) Call number nine. It was, I get, it was just really, honestly, it was a real special treat. And yeah, it was pretty nice to be vast, you know, I felt very honored to be honest with you. Growing up in Kingston, did you grow up a Canadian's fan? Like, who was your team? Well, that's a crazy thing is, all my friends were throwing them a bunch of y'all fans. I grew up a big Bobby Clark fan, you know, I was a big flyer's fan. And a lot of guys from Kingston end up in boss. And so it's kind of a mix of flyers and Bruins. You know, you had, you had from Harry Sendin, you know, spent a long time here in Kingston, you had Don Cherry, you had Cashman, it was a captain, you know, during the Bobby Ornays, you know, Rick Smith, the Kenny Linsman, Scott Urineel, like all these, all the Kingston guys all in, I've gone to Boston. So funny enough, I was, you know, more of the Boston and then, you know, I think my favorite player was Bobby Clark. So, so I was, I was kind of like the rebel in the, in the, in the yard, you know, at school with, you know, with a chair for those two teams. Going based on your, your birth, your birthday, and when you started playing, were you 14 playing games in the OHL? - I was, yeah. - Yeah, you were a freak, you were a freak when you were younger. - I, I was, I was, I was a decent up size, you know, and so I played junior B in season ended in February. So Jimmy Morrison, I was a coach in Germany, he said, listen, you know, you, you got a good shot of making the Kingston Canadians next year. The rules back then where you could play your hometown, but then you'd have to go into the draft after that. So, I, so I came up to practice with them, and that was supposed to be the, the deal, and they had injuries. So I played the last two games with them, and then they had injuries in the playoffs against Ottawa. So I played a playoff game. And that was like, Bernie Nichols and, you know, that group of guys. And then I went on and played the next year, and funny enough, it was like, I went to camp and I'm playing the games. And they said, you know, if you stay here for 48 hours, you can't get a scholarship. I'm like, I'm not, don't worry about that. I'm not going to, don't worry about it, guys. But they're like, okay, well, you're 15 now. And you know, like, you know, you're ready, you know, skill wise all that. Yes, but physically, you know, you know, how's it going to be? And I said, screw that. So Belleville was an expansion team. And so I'm skating around the exhibition game. And I'm like, well, who's that big dude over there? And it's like, that's Marty McSorley. I said, all right. So the game started. I went, you know, me, I'm not a heavyweighter. And like, Adam, I went up to Marty and I go, hey, I got to go, yes. So we fought and he broke my nose and I get fell down and all the most shit bang bang. And they're like, yeah, and I go, I then made the team. Should have went to college. That's an unreal move though. You were like, oh, you don't think I'm ready? All right, watch this. Boom. I'll ignore you. Play all of you now. Watch me get knocked out. I'll show you. Yeah, let me see your curve, Marty. Oh, yeah, I'll get you in fucking. I got him back. I got him back. But the same hook on his nose now. And then, yeah, so then I played a year in Kingston and then I had to go in the draft and then I went to Guel. So like, I noticed that like, so you played in your hometown and then the next year you move on to the Guelph. At the time, it was the pladers, not the storm. And then that's really when you took off. You had 52 goals in that year. So was it like, you just like getting away from home was it the best thing? Like, how did that all get facilitated? I think it was just, you know, now is like, you know, 16. And also, it was an expansion team. So they gave me the cap to see because I was the only guy that played a junior A games. It was all working. So, so we weren't very good team. But yeah, I mean, I was able to play a lot and get some ice time and all. And, but, you know, I mean, juniors, you know, when you look back and play in junior in the 80s, I, I remember being up in Sudbury. I went to hit a guy and he ducked. I went headfirst into the boards. And I could feel my bottom teeth all shaking around. So I went to the trainer and I said, hey, something's wrong here. What do you think? He goes, oh, your teeth are all rattled around. Yeah, because I went into the boards. And he said, hey, the good news is the roots didn't pop off. But your teeth are all shattering. And I said, well, you got some gum. He said, yeah, and I said, well, put it with eight pieces of gum, chew it up for me. And he starts chewing it up and all that. And I said, okay, hand it to me. So he hand it to me. I put it on the bottom. That was my mouthguard to finish next to me. Oh, my God, ABC gum. Oh, my God. Bubble, bubble. Yes, the game changed folks. Yes, the game is changed. I was like, what's the trainer? I was like, how was it being on a team, though, that went seven and 63? Holy shit. That's a long. They shared gum, too. There's a long winner. Hey, you know what they, they, they went on the couple of years later, one of the moral cop Gary Roberts and it's a heck of a franchise. So you're last year or junior, you got to play World Juniors? Yes. Where'd you guys get to go to? Did you guys end up pulling home the gold? No. You know what? I got him that we, we finished like fourth or fifth. It was in Sweden and I think it was right around the time where Canada was realizing you're not going to go over to these European countries and, you know, play like A, we're the big physical guys. We're Canada and, you know, we were a very undisciplined team to be honest and, you know, we spent a lot of time in the box. We paid the price and, and, you know, it didn't go well, you know, and I think that was right around that time where I think, you know, Canada was really starting to realize like, hey, you know, these countries are getting better, you know, and they're for real and, you know, we got to, we got to respect them more and, and be ready to play, you know, a different game and obviously we've adopted. Yeah, it was a quite experienced and then from there, we were really overseas and the Olympic team was, was going and they were watching and so they invited the two or three of us to join the Olympic team at that time. Was that the Dave King one with, in tip it was on the team he came back after college, right? Yeah. Yeah. Like, I basically said to my teachers and at Guelph, I said, I'm going over the World Championships for a couple of weeks, I'll be back over Christmas. Well, I went over there and then I joined the Olympic teams. I left in the summer and I came back at like March, so my grades were very, but yeah, that was Dave King was the coach, tip with, tip and I were linemates actually over there. You know, Carrie Wilson was one of our top players because, you know, it was really college in junior A guys, you know, Pat Flatley was in college, you know, they were sort of like, you know, the Russ Courtney and JJ Daniel, Dave Gagne, some of us junior A guys, you know, we went on to play in the HL, but we're, you know, we're a young group and of course, you know, you had Russia, Soviet Union at the time and the T-sov and all those guys, so they won gold and the Czechs won silver and it was up for grabs really between us and Sweden and the United States for, for really for the bronze. What was the Pat Burns, like was he involved with the coaching staff at that time or was that a different time? That was, yeah, that was a different time, you know, Burns, Burns is one of my favorite coaches, you know, he's, everyone says that. Oh, man, you know what, you know, he, he put 90% of his focus on you, like your team, you know, so I had him in March, y'all in Toronto and just, you just love the player for this guy, simple, black and white, coach hard, you know, hard idea, but fair, honest, and I get cut from the team can in Toronto and the can of cup and those, you know, they cut around 11, 12 and, you know, there's a group of us and we had a few beers in the afternoon and before we get on our flights the next day and I come walk into the hotel and Burns, he was there and Brian Sutter and they're like, hey, the barge is shut down. You know, we're going to go up to, we got the key to. Keenan's sweet and my Keenan was the head coach and like oh, I don't want to go have a drink of that guy right now You know, no, he's gone. He's not here. He went home. It's a day off tomorrow So what we go and next thing all these guys birds. He's fired food all over the place Food all happy. I'm like this guy's insane. It is company but there we go We rolled down Mike's bed. I have to tell him on these days and they roll it down and put all the flowers and Roses and thorns and I think I was bed and remade it and I go there. That's what you get for you know I get up the next day and I go fly down to Jersey. I was playing to Jersey at the time and sure enough Week later or whatever. I get traded. Where do I go much or who do who greets me? The test You go. I remember that time in Toronto. I said oh, yeah, yeah, I keep it between you and I What was that great because he went home but then they were coming back to stay there because was the tournament there. Yeah Well, it was, you know, it might have been you know, three weeks later, but they finished the panic up Tournament and then he was coaching Montreal at the time. So he went back right I went to Jersey that I could trace it there. So I'm like, oh great. The only thing I know about you is you're pretty good throwing fruit at me. You guys used to get fucking pickled back that Believe like oh Like the shit that you guys I mean you're wrestling undercover cops You guys are destroying coaches room doing fruit. Oh, it was yeah the 80s and early 90s where we're real adventurous. Oh, it's like quite a quite a quite a time No camera. What are some of the biggest predicaments you saw guys when they were boozing on the road get in like what like What are some ones that you can share where you were like because like back then man guys We're like like half the team would get arrested being the clink and then it wouldn't be public knowledge because it's just it was different Yeah, you know what I I'm not saying that happened. I've never been arrested this We I don't you know why it's crazy it like the like Situations we we I don't know we just they able to get out of them or whatever, you know, I mean I Mean I think of like even Troy Crowder when he came in that year and he won you know The run through the course of this of the of the league and fight him and he fought pro v that first night, you know, and And then all of a sudden is a build up a like old with Troy Crowder fights Bob Probert You know in a month in Detroit and dog cherries going down and all those guys and Troy was like, you know I mean who wants to think about how you're gonna fight Bob Probert tomorrow night So I was captain at the time. I just said hey, we're all going out in Detroit. We're gonna have our beers and all that and We did we went out all hard all that night with the team and Took the pressure off Troy and say we we got you the whole thing and we went in the joy de pop Probe we win the game And we have about another four day wrote four more games on that road trip out in California and all that and so we go out there And the guys were like Kirk like you said to grow the night before the game and we won what do we do now? I'm like try it again We ran the table on that road Yeah, we were just a good average team at that time in Jersey coach calls me and he goes hey Who's the ringleader on this and I am I am because good job Keep it going Future coaching we can't lose Oh, I was coach and I don't really share the stories with the guys When you guys would go on the road would you guys usually all be on one floor? Yeah, for the most part. Yeah, yeah We had you know, we had roommates back then and I'm sure we're all in the you know on the same floors If I you know if I look back it we had We're the year we won the Cup in Montreal. We were we stayed at a hotel even in Montreal so you imagine four rounds Of staying in a hotel on the road and then you'd come home Check in the night before game as a team and then after a game at home We were able to go home and you know, you know, you do that for four. That's a lot of time in the hotel. We I remember we We got you know, we're like what could we do here like you know back to no computers all that stuff Back to lie online and my keen well We started these water fights the only old bucket on the door. Oh, yeah tsunami Yeah, the guys are going out buying the automatic. You don't water fight the Machine pistol things or whatever and super shoulders for four rounds and I have to release the LA game one where game two and We're we're going at it in all ways of like a bunch of kids and that's you know shooting water and having and Enjoctomers sees it. So the next morning calls Gi Carval and I down and he goes you two we have in one Anything, you know, we're in the finals. We're down when nothing guys are goofing around shooting you know Water bites and everything all this stuff. He's like what's Like I'm still disappointing you guys. We're like jock. We've been doing it for four rounds. He's like you have Yeah, he's okay doing it. He's doing The hotel is just molded and festive. Oh, yeah Okay, we'll play mini hockey. I got you these water balloons. Oh You know, there's the new bazooka super solker You know just you know the new boys get the boys I can't imagine Patrick Wagen buried in the face from a water gun being okay with it He's like, what the fuck is on a real gun? It's a good easy on him. Carbonos shows up with an eyepatch. He's like I got swerved it in the eye I get pink eye Yeah, I'm bad. He was a competitor. My first game in my gel axi. I was so nervous and so far It up. I was at the blue line. Not show anthem And uh, I get traded for step on reshape. You know, they go too much all for French player French picking player scored 40-50 goals. That's and I'm English speaking. It's you go in the little pressure And uh, he played that afternoon for jersey and he scored two goals and I get to the ring that night was eight o'clock games And my keen says to me. Hey, no pressure, but he's too up on you already So I was like, so I start the anthem and uh, start the game and You know all of a sudden on the it ends the anthem and I fired up and I turn I start skating my head down I get the helmet in my hand and uh, I didn't know the paddy's ritual was the skate halfway to the blue line stop Turn around face the net. Well Guess who I ran over my first game in the block. No That's up. That's my first my introduction to being a much all kidding Oh, is he angry or is it cool about it? Oh, I skated away. I didn't We got to get what did you know? You said so rock it over again post came you said go fuck this guy again And oh god your last year in jersey. I'm looking they They traded that offseason you and Shanahan. Yeah, yeah, that's kind of what that's crazy, right? Was that what fights? Uh, I believe shanny and there's a Scott Stevens the uh, it was the uh Uh, not I don't know if it was a trade. It was it uh I'm trying to think of the word the compensation. They oh, yeah, I remember the offer with the contracts, right? Yeah, and I think uh, they offered it uh, I think Lou got Scotty Stevens and went to arbitration or something then say Lewis got shanny If uh, it was if I remember correctly it was something like that But they made some big changes like did you know you were getting traded? Did you heard anything about that? I was in a contract dispute. So Kenny uh, Danico and I and uh, basically, you know, I wasn't at camp. I was uh, I was skating on my own there with with Daniel and I think the owner was wasn't too happy with you know me Not being a camp and trying to get my contract signed and uh, then that'd a big you know a big part of you know getting trade it. So Kerr Kehlabok. Yeah. Yeah. Good. I Kerr Kehlabok. You're talking about being a hella buck. But but I would say that a lot of the guys we talked to around that time and also specifically new jersey There was a lot of uh, there was always these contract disputes. Was it because players were starting to become more aware of what other guys were making and like there were I mean, we just talked to Billy G who held out three times. You know, you mentioned chanahan I'm pretty sure he was in one keep the track. Loo at that time could chuck like Loo at that time was obviously a little bit cheap to and want a guys to kind of fall in line So were you guys becoming more aware of what other guys were making even though back then it was still somewhat private Yeah, I think it was starting to change, you know, it was it was a little bit more Guys were getting a little more like hey, it's we got us like kind of stand up and start pushing right like for You know to uh, you know, you know fight for your Fight for what salary you thought was fair, you know, and and loot loot the like loot is uh Loose pretty fair too, you know, I mean the contract before that one. I mean literally called me And said come across to the hotel. I want to talk to you and I would already says we got to get your contract done I said because again, it wasn't done And he goes well, what number Well, like what's your number and I said well, this is it
I think it was like 200 and something at the time and he's like that okay done. Okay. It's done. I go what he was Let's move on. Let's get is that your number. Let's do it and So I call you like yeah, why didn't you call your agent? It was just that's it wasn't that wasn't the thing then Well, I I was put on this ball caught off guard. He's like yeah, yeah shit 240 whatever it was at the time. He's like done. Okay. You know what we'll get it signed up and go back to practice. I'm like Okay, is this a trick or what's going on? It's like what the fuck were you doing? Luke came in like your third year, right? Like was did he when he came in right away? Was he exactly how he was towards the end of his career like now not letting agents come to the games kind of You know knowing everything that's going on in the organization or was he kind of feeling it out for a little bit first? Oh, he came in high. He came in high, you know, and and I mean that in a good way I had so much respect for Lou. I know he traded me and that that's it's we get we're great friends and go on you know great these days But you know what he came in with And we got a lot at the time because we're we're like we're all a bunch of young Canadian guys like junior hockey in Canada You know shanahan for big, you know Kirk McClain, Sean Burke, you know She's like all our group, you know, and then we go. Hey, we got a new gm. He's Lou. Them relays, you know from Providence University I'm like, I don't you know if I knew where Providence was like What's going on here? But anyway, you like he came in and he just obviously changed that culture and changed that organization and You know, yes, he has rules all that banana guys loyal. You know, he's a he's a great hockey person You know, it's like for example, I was coaching Queens University and we had no budget up here when I my first coached job And I was in my hometown here in Kingston and I called him I said hey, I got a recruit, you know and make it Exciting to get people to come here and I said but I got we got no money. He's like no problem He sent our team down to Jersey Put us up in a hotel for free or under him I got us a doubles game next day a Jets game give us a one hour free ice time So you know the guys went to a NFL game all food drinks having free for a hockey NFL game and practice hotels and then set up a game with You know a university team down there and for not any paid the whole bill like that's the stuff that You know people might not know about Lou, but super loyal guy loyal loyal loyal like a dog. Yeah. Yeah, it's like I mean who I mean who does that? You know and so my guys thought it was the greatest thing and everything but there's all on lose bill Pretty cool. Oh, that's unreal. I know. I know that's like you wouldn't think that of him Although I don't know him but the stuff you hear where you had to like tape your socks a certain way him coming down It was like oh shit. He's sending college teams down to Jersey. What a nice guy? I'm looking He I'm looking here also So when you were in Toronto two years there or you got traded there in the middle of the 95 96 season Then you played the next season, but those were the two years Larry Murphy was there when he when he was getting booed Were you guys like what the like because he was so good, right? Maybe not there. I don't know But you guys must be like what the fuck's going on right now? It's insane Larry Murphy is a Hall of Famer and what is Murf got three cups? Pits with the Troy, like he's got three or four Stanley cup four for Stanley cup Yeah, I mean four times like a Hall of Famer you never ever seen the guy on the ice you like I this guy was always on his feet And the fans whatever reason booed him all the time. So I remember Dougie Going to Bernsey in San Bernsey you can't start him at home like it you know the guy gets booed every time You know, so literally you had to change it so you couldn't start at home because they get booed every every time He started the in the Maple Leaf Gardens And it was you know, he got booed and washed and he had this guy was like such a elite defense when it was a kind of like Boo Shard where maybe it looked like he like didn't give a fuck, but he obviously did like is it was a kind of like that I think it is yeah, I think it was just the style he played You know, it wasn't like he was flashy and you know, it wasn't like he was fast He just he was just so smart and so skillly just you know, he obviously made things happen and was a great offensive Defendment and in a pretty good defensive guy better than people give him credit for but I think yeah I think you know, he's a big man and I think he looked like he was moving slow right there and look like you know It was a little lazy look at that whatever style, but the guy was a hell of a hockey player and but yeah, he went through some tough times there Five to 20 goals seasons, yeah, he had 61 points in Toronto. It's not like I a good number. I know Yeah, no, he's a he was a good hockey player What's the story with Cliff Fletcher and Dougie? You got oh, I think you told me at you started to anywhere when we were at that golf tournament this summer. Yeah, Jesus Well, you know what God bless, but Cliff was just a awesome guy He had a really good relationship with Dougie obviously from Calgary You know, and then as well over in the Toronto days and would I get traded Toronto? Supposed to kind of read your contract and all that and anyway, we're sitting there and this is before the I think this is very before cell phones if really kicking in and I get a message from Cliffs and I want to see it my house I was like Jesus, okay, and I called Dougie and I go what Cliff wants to see me as his house. You know why? He goes, no, but he wants to see me too So I said, well, I'll see you there. So we get there and Cliffs says Are you two he says I want to let you know. I think I'm I think I'm getting fired We're like you're not getting fired. He said I know. I think I am. He says so before I do we got to finish this Mickey between the two of us and Of whiskey. Yeah, he's like I need something to drink with the three of us gonna have And then for the next couple days Dougie got traded the Jersey and I can trade the Florida and he didn't get by his state mention you guys Dougie I'm sitting in Florida. He's sitting in Jersey. I said how are you doing? He goes well, I'm I'm on the patio The balcony and my whole tellroom in a parking lot and I said I'm sitting for a lot of deal on the ocean Oh, fuck both hung over with your back Whoever drinks the most can go to Florida. Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh Holy fuck that is wait. Did he mentioned during that day you guys might be getting shipped out of town? Yeah, he did he actually brought us the he actually brought us in to say listen, you know what I we're all done We're yeah He says I have a chance, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna move you. I just want to let you guys know Oh my god, she was so fucked up back then like the way things would go down and it seems so fun Yeah, I wonder how many of these decisions were being made while guys were absolutely buckled Everyone of them all the important ones they probably got together the brain trust They all right crack open that bottle. Yeah, three hours later. Gretz. She getting traded L.A. Yeah Man, what was Florida like then? I guess they had already been to the cup final but at that point Will you guys apply off team when you got there? Yeah, you know what they were yeah, I see I see we end up both going to pretty good teams. Tell you what the jury's here with the Florida and But you know, it's tough. You know you get you come in you come in at the tree deadline, right? And when the team's going well and you come in and also and you kind of bump a guy and a little bit in his role They's been doing for 60 games and yeah, it's it's yeah, it's it's a tough situation You know you because you don't want to disrupt anything and then you think these guys have been you know Doing this together all year and they fought to get in first and then you get Throwing in there and you know you go on you're you're gonna jump on the power play unit and this guy goes off. It's it's It's yeah, it's you can see how sometimes it it works chemistry wise and sometimes it doesn't but it's not always It's not always an easy transition I think for you not only the team But I mean the guy walking into that situation as well. We were just that chick. Let's cup a car was it last week? Or maybe two weeks ago now? And keep track and we bumped into Daryl Sador and You got to go play with them in Dallas right after they'd won that cup But they still had unbelievable teams like Brett Hall was still around Madonna was still there you guys had hitches the coach like You went to the finals right you guys went to the finals against Jersey. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it was Well, you know what's kind of cool is I got bought out in Florida and Prior to going to Dallas and you know what it was probably the you know, I deserve that you know I didn't play well with Florida for whatever reason and and There's Canada day and
and back at the lake and the friends and family already had the phone call. It actually quits it early. It wasn't cliff ledger. It was a sudden chuck that called me and said, "Kirk, we're over buying you out." And I said, "All right, well thanks, Chuck. Happy Canada day." - He's like, "I don't get a bottle of whiskey." (laughing) - The fuck is this? - Oh, nice change. - So I was like 34 or something, you know? And I was like, "Nah, you know, I don't want to end my career on a buyout." So I started training and looking for a PTO and everything. And you know, July, August, you know, September comes nothing. And then, you know, October and the season starts. And so I, all I did was skate with KingstonFront Nax here and the Queen is going, "Gales, the two teams on train and everything." And October and November, December and nothing. And I'm just ready to retire and I get a call from Bob Ganey. And he's like, "Kirk, we got injuries in Dallas. We won the, obviously, the couple last year. We got a good crack at it, I think, again this year." And we got guys out. So, you know, you're a veteran. I'll make you a deal. I'll bring you in for 10 games. And, you know, you come in, you play. If it works out great, if, you know, if it doesn't, then, you know, I call you up, shake your hand and you go back home. I was like, "Perfect." So I went in for 10 games and hitched. You know, I started, I had one practice and then I, on the fourth line and then we're Brian Scrutland and then just before we go into Vancouver to play the game, hitches like, "All right, here's starting lineup. Mike Medano, Brett Haul and Kirk." And I'm like, "Wow." Everyone looks happy. And I'm like, "No warning for you, huh? Just be right in." He's like, "I'll go out and, you know, thanks, thanks, hitch." But he left me with them. And, honestly, because Yuri Latin was their, their goal two guy on that line. He was hurt. And 10 games and, you know, at 10 points with those two, like, you know, it's pretty easy to play with those two guys. And Bob called me up and said, "Hey, you're here for the end of the year." And shit, next thing you know, we're in the stand-up finals against Jersey. And I thought, "Man, I, you know what? I didn't even have a, I couldn't get a tri-out in August, you know?" So, so there was a great way to, great spot to finish my career. And there were good teams and playing with Mike and Holly and Hatcher and Zubavis. - Well, that was the best team I actually played with. - Was Ed Belfort still there too at the time? - Eddie, you know, New and Dike and Legum Brunner and, you know, had too long. - And you were with Carbino again, right? Carbino and Mike, and I were lying. - Oh, it was like, and Keener, I mean, this guy is my favorite teammate in the game all the time. And we just had him on. - I know. - Here's something I'll say. - And then since we had him on, since we had him on, sorry. We, I read something that, was it Stoff who said he's the king, like the middleweight king of the WHO, he was that tough too. - Oh, he, he knocked, lie all line out. And there was a scene. - Really? - So, he lost, oh, he got knocked out and had to sit out with a concussion and Keener got kicked out for on his suspensions. So, he lost two guys. - No, in the, in the, in the WHO? - Yes, yes. - Oh, no, he was, he grabbed the hitch in the dressing room one day and Keener and I were sitting around and I think it was Hatcher. And we're about to go out onto the ice for practice and we were sitting around chatting and hitch comes walking through. And these Keener said something, they tripped each other and hitched. So, hey, Keener, I remember we used to be tough. I remember, you know, you don't play tough anymore. - Oh, oh. - Keener goes really. So, he gets up, he grabs hitch, pulls him down and gets him a headlock and gives him a noogie and all that on the floor. - Oh, this league man, that end coach. - And I got a go back. - This was in 2000 though, it's not that long ago. - We gotta, we gotta start putting whiskey in the water bottles, man. This is fucking old school shit. I love it. - The guys hop in and they're like, get 'em, get 'em. - It was only, it was only Hatcher and I and Keener. And one of them's on the ice or something and it gets up and Keener gets up and lays them in there. Whenever we get the noogie going, it's here is all over and it looks like Keener goes, "You're lucky my skates are tied up." - They were never tied. I like to camp with them. - Yeah, he could never tie. - He slid 'em on with them tied, I think. It was like, how do boots with tucks on the bottom? You just walked away, he went on the ice. - Imagine being on the ice biz and then like, three guys come out and they're like, "What the fuck happened in the walk of me?" Like, you would have no idea. Keener just beat up our coat. - Brad Hall starts clapping. - Was, we were there, was there a story when Hitz called one of the guys on like the phone in the room 'cause it was next to the bath tub? 'Cause he got stuck in the tub. - I don't know what happened. Didn't Keener tell us that story? - That's, that's before me, that was junior. But I don't know all the, I don't know all the facts. - I heard a story, he got stuck. He couldn't get out of the bath tub. - Hot tub. - And thankfully, what player likes me enough to come help me? - Yeah, I think he called the one guy that he could trust. - Oh, he's so good. - It's, it's like, I'd say I use a great coach, he'd be paired just like so well. I mean, he's such a great bench coach, you know, and all that. But I'd say he was relentless. You know, we're playing in Tampa one night. And I'd say anytime you skate by your bench with that puck, you can hear him going like, "Dump it, dump it, dump it." It's all you hear, right? Jamie Lagerbrenner has the puck. He was skating down the reed by her bench and he's yelling at him, "Dump it, dump it." Jamie dumps it and then he goes and does a great big lap way away, not in the old zone, but way back in the new to zone, like a great big, so the play's going along in the old zone. And Jamie's doing a great big lap in the new to zone and, and then comes flying straight at the bench and starts. And he says, "Did you like that dump in it?" - Oh, my, is the bench crying, Lagerbrenner? - Oh, and like now we, we're playing four guys in the old zone, we're late. - Now there'd be a clip of this. This would be on like Twitter by the way. - It would be amazing. It was right in, it was right in Tampa. It was like, "Oh my God, why do we have it like we used to?" - I know. - Oh, you played with some characters, man. - Oh, what about all the in-hatch going back out? - So if you couldn't, you couldn't get a deal. You get brought in the Dallas. You guys go to the cup finals. You come back the next year. You have one goal. You kept, you were there three more years though, they couldn't get ready after that. - I signed, I signed four one-year deals. I was, I finished that season and Bob gave me another year. I said, "Okay, great. I go play that year." And season ends and he's like, "All right." "Okay, I think you got one more year in your unit." And I was like, "Okay, great." I hit the fourth one and then I went up and now Doug Armstrong's a GM. And I go up to the army and he goes, "No, no, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, one year." There you go. See you later. Were you there for that one? Oh, yeah. Do you know the story? We've heard it before, but from different opinions, we'd love to hear it again from what you remember. Oh, Jesus. Yeah. Well, we lost the game before, but it was like 2-1 and Hitch said, "Hey, you know what? I don't mind the loss because I love how well we played defense. We played great defensively." Well, that's all Hully needed to know. So Hully's like sitting there going, "I come walking in the dressing room with my coffee." He goes, "Hey, Kurt, scoring is overrated." And I'm like, "What? Okay. If I go off, I sit down with my stall and the next guy comes in and he's like, "Hey, scoring is overrated." He goes on and on. He's in this thing. Because Hitch is talking about, you know, it's all about defense, right? So we get on the edge. And you lost. Every loss is the thing. But Hitch is that's okay. I love how we played. So, you know, we get the old lines going and Mike and Hully and let them are firing around like normal, like three-on-old, you know, break-out, conflying down, bang, you know, mode and let's over to Hully, walks in and tee it up and he flips it into the corner. And then we're all along the neutral zone, you know, like the next line. Hully Jades is like, "Member, he's the jug that's sticking to you." And he goes, "Scoring is overrated." Another regroup, bang, bang, bang, down the goal, you know, with the blue line, Hully's got it again, flips it into the corner and then Hitch is like, "That's not funny, you know, get off the ice, or off the go and Dorell wasn't, they take off and the other golf and then 45 minutes." That is fucking unbelievable. Was it Dorell's in first place? That is unbelievable. We need that ship back on this. Oh, you know. Hully got us so confident and cocky.
in his ability like which like obviously he'd earn that to just have the like right after you get off the ice to be like, all right, let's go tee it up. These guys can give a fuck, man. That is such a good story. It worked because like at the end of the day when it was such a veteran team that when the puck dropped at seven, you know, I mean, everyone played and they, in that team played hard like it was a, it was a good team, you know, skills, size, toughness, goal tending. I mean, I mean, you went back to the stand like a finals, you're a pretty good team, you know, and, but aside from the game time, oh boy, that group was a, it should have been played in the 60s or some of that group. Biz, my first training camp, Holly was in Phoenix and it was the first year that they implemented like the three hour rule. So he would set his timer three hours as soon as he got there and as soon as the three hours was up, you know, some guys would just stick around. You're not going to leave like whatever. As soon as that was up, he was gone. He is like, he, he's a treat. Oh my god. We got, we got to get him on the pod eventually. He's kind of, he's one of our white whales, obviously. Um, I, I know that was the rollback last question, but, uh, coaching, like, you know, you've done an awesome job behind the bench. Like, you, you, I believe in your, in your retirement, since you've retired, you've been a head coach and an assistant coach. What do you prefer more? And do you see yourself getting behind the bench again? Like, it sucks because like Washington's got a good squad. And I'm sure it would be fun to be back there, but you'd rather be a head coach, maybe. Yeah. You know, I, I think that's where I, you know, I'm at. I stepped away. You know, I've, I've been really fortunate. You know, I mean, you know, I've, you know, worked with, uh, you know, uh, Cole, Julian, who won a cup, you know, uh, you know, I have, uh, Darrell Darrell, you know, and, uh, so it's, you know, worked with Hitch, you know, so I worked with these three Stanley Cup coaches, veteran guys. And, you know, I had, I had some, actually, I hired, uh, uh, uh, Ravi, uh, in Carolina. I don't know many people. Nobody was by a assistant. That's right. I saw that looking at this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which was great. You know, he was awesome. And, uh, so yeah, I had that one opportunity. And, uh, then I, and I really enjoyed it. And I just, you know, but I just wanted to step aside and, uh, you know, that opportunity comes as a head, uh, job again. Uh, obviously, you know, I'd love to, I'd like to take that challenge on again. But in the meantime, I've been busy and, uh, doing these speaking engagements. And it's been, it's been going great. Well, I'm sure you're gonna be getting booked up after this one. I was, this is, this is awesome. This is so old school. So you just go around, you get booked up, you go around and just kind of tell, tell these old school stories. And like, where, like, where have you been doing these speaking engagements? Yeah. You know what? Basically, everyone loves stories, right? It's, I mean, that's the part, but I really support it with, you know, I, I talk about, uh, you know, created the, the hat trick method. And it talks a lot about building a championship team. And, you know, we've had a lot of fun chatting about all this stuff. But at the end of the day, there's some real strong pillars that, you know, I talk about, you know, with, uh, clarity and accountability and working with people. You know, and I believe those three pillars there really are the, you know, the, the foundation of, you know, building championship teams. And, you know, so I explained a little bit about 93, but other teams have been a part of and talk a lot about leadership and, you know, being a captain and a, you know, coach. And, you know, being in the HL for 40 years, you know, like, you know, a lot of people have concerns of different things. The game's changed over four decades. The world's changed. A eyes coming in, you know, making comparisons and all that. So, uh, yeah, I've been really enjoying, uh, you know, you'll tell them people about our world, you know, in the NHL and how it transpires into the corporate world. And, and what was it like for you to coach OV? I mean, that, that year where he broke the record must have been incredible and just kind of being around him day-to-day, seeing how he goes about his business. It must have been pretty memorable for you. Yeah. Well, you, you know, again, people don't see like the passion he has, right? Like, you know, on the day-to-day basis in the dressing room, you know, it comes in, you know, a guy at his age and you got young guys and, you know, he's excited and having fun. And he loves the game. And, um, we always kind of really cool is, is, uh, when you coach him, every time he takes a shot on net off the face off, uh, line rush, uh, all his own play, whatever it is, every shot, you know, I knew that as I was standing there as a coach, it's a cook. Give me the, uh, the iPad. I want to look at that shot, you know, so you imagine like the, the thought of, here's the all-time, you know, Grace Goldscore. And yeah, every time he shoots, it's like, you know, why did he save it or why did I, you know, was that a bad shot? Yeah. Is he just getting the goalies tendencies on the goalies reaction? And yeah, or he'll be like, uh, I had him, you know, what he made a great save or I didn't, you know, I didn't get it up enough or I didn't, you know, this or off face-offs. He'll be like, tell his wing or see where the guy came from that that got through to get to me, you know, you know, pick him now, you know, so I can get that shot, you know, like, all, every shot he takes, he looks at to see why he didn't score, you know. And, uh, so, so is, you know, it's, you know, he's, he's a detail on that goal scoring. And going back to like, say Wayne, like cool thing about something the people wouldn't know about, Wayne, but Wayne would actually, the two years before when, you know, he's having a little trouble scoring there for a bit. Wayne would call me up and say, hey, you know what, I got some ideas that might work to help him get scoring again. And, you know, like, when if you put him with this guy or when it, when he plays a little bit more in front of this that net on a power play or whatever he observed, you imagine he's chasing Wayne and Wayne's calling me going, hey, I wonder if this would work for him, you know, so I think that's pretty cool that, uh, that's something like way would do that. Wayne's watching hockey non-stop. Every night. He's got a little, he travels around with a, like a box so he can get all the broadcasts and stuff like that. So it's pretty, I was shocked to see how much he consumes of it. Like, even when he's on the road and like, the hotel wherever he is wouldn't have the certain types of broadcasts, he's watching him somehow. So pretty fascinating. And going back to OV, he's pretty old school in a sense of, I don't think that people, like, he doesn't really give him his personality, like you would see in the locker room. Like, even when you interview him, he's very soft-spoken. He's, you know, he's very selective with his words, but behind the scenes, you could tell, like, he's just an absolute clown with the guys. Like, he's fucking around all the time with him being joky joky, embracing all the young guys and stuff like that. I wish we got to see more of more of what he is behind the scenes. Yeah, yeah, he's, yeah, he's pretty, he's, he's old school, you know, he's, you know, he's, you know, he likes to be, he loves to be in the room, he likes to be at the guys, you know, I mean, that's, that's the big thing right there, you know, it's, but, you know, again, another thing that, you know, this is OV, you know, we, we play that game as an afternoon in New York, Long Island, he sets the record and says, everybody we're getting on the plane. I booked a restaurant back in Washington. Everybody, wise, you know, trainers, coaches, anyone who's part of the team, like, you're invited and we, you know, we landed back in wash, we go into the restaurant, you know, have some, some dinner, head. I saw the video. I think he walked in with two beers in his hands. There's a video. It kind of, it kind of, I've scripted any better. I mean, he, he does it in the afternoon on a short flight back. But, you know, he, but you know, he did it on a, not only that, but, you know, he went and bought everybody a special watch with a description on the back of your name and and the bottom of the watch is, is his famous, you know, logo him scored and not, and, uh, called everyone out one by one in the dressing room, like, uh, surprise, you know, team meeting and, uh, you know, you know, hand delivered each, each one to every person there and just to say thank you. So, pretty classy guy as well. Bays will still never forgive you and carbs for giving him that fucking D zone start in Utah last year. That was the only bad thing. You guys got him out there in the season. And I was bored on one of them, which was amazing. Well, carbs, carbs goes, like, oh, I didn't really want it to be a topic anymore. It was fucking game 76 of the season. Like, we've been, we've been talking about three months and Bays was in the building where you guys, like, I was there in Utah. Like, did you, did he mention it to you before the game that he was going to give him one or was it just spontaneous? Uh, no, he, no, um, he didn't really mention it to us that much. But I know that all was, you know, wanting a little bit more ice time from the game before he also, he's like, if you guys start in the D zone, start me in the D zone, get me out there and he's like, yeah, he did it. He did it. Oh my god. Well, this has been unreal, unbelievable, Kirk. We appreciate it, man. What a career you had. And it's, it's so funny to hear these stories. So thank you so much. Oh, thanks. The guy who really did it all in the game. Biz brought up what's the best one, two, three draft. Strong was with Mick David and Eichel. Then it went Mariner, Hannah Finn, Zaka, Proverov, Worenski, Rotten and was in that draft Kyle Connor, Barzell. That was a hell of a draft. Brock Besser, Kineckney, Ross Lovitch was the first runner that 2015's no joke. 2003 is probably still the best draft that's business draft for everyone wondering. What was the top 10 there? Top 10 of 2003. I didn't think that maybe even the 10 to 20 picks are what's more impressive about that year. That's the second round. Also, I think with Shay Weber and Bergeron. So that 2003, Flurry, Stahl, Horton, Gerdev. We got to get Doug McLean on. I've seen some clips. He's funny bastard. He's fucking hilarious. Vanneck, Milan Mahalek, Ryan Souter, Holburn, Fannoff, Andre Kustitson, Jeff Carter, Hugh Jesseman, Hugh Chasbesseman. Bigger, one of the bigger buss. Dustin Brown, Seabrook, Parisi, Get Slav, Brent Burns, Mark Stewart, Kessler, Mike Richards, Anthony Stewart, Brian Boyle was in that Corey Perry end of the first round. Yeah, that was that draft. Paul Bisonets in there somewhere, guys. I don't know what the Calgary flames. We had Craig Conroy on and everyone knew going into the year. It was going to be a tough go. The building was packed, Susie. They beat the hurricanes and the interview after the game. Devin Cooley, correct? I love this kid. This kid is I love play the interviewer now. I'm talking dope amines and what he was talking about, like, like not having too much fun while he was playing. We talked about him having the pet bunny with Craig Conroy. I think he was trying to learn astrophysicity or something whatever the fuck you call it. I'm a moron. But we just have to get him on and talk to him because he's like a type of guy where if you did mushrooms with him and you had a full blown conversation that you would leave with a completely different perspective on life. And I appreciate this guy. No, he seems like a type of guy that actually you'd be like, wow, how many mushrooms do you take? He's like, I've never taken one. Yeah. But you would have to be on mushrooms to talk to him. Yes. Yes. But him talking about just like the dope amines and like, I didn't even know it like the whole time. I'm listening. I'm like, oh, this guy's never got drunk. He's never taken anything like he is just living life to the fullest. And he's experiencing all these little things in the middle of a game playing in front of 20,000. And like truly, I feel like he's embracing every single moment when he's on the ice. And at the end, he's like, yeah, when I'm playing like that, I don't remember anything. And then when the buzzer ends, everything just comes out of me. And all my emotions come out. Like, he's living in the moment. I fucking love it. I love his quote when he's like, like they asked some of what maybe like a bad goal or something. He's like, I don't think about the past. There's nothing there for me. The past is dead. It's dead. Like, there's nothing. There's nothing in the past that's that that that benefits me anymore. So just an unreal perspective that any. And I think it's important for like goalies to listen to him in the way that he spoke on Liam McHugh had a quote tweet on it saying, well, he's got two boys that are lacrosse goalies. So he's like, if you're a parent of a gold tender, make it, make sure you hear Devon Cooley's quotes and his post game post game interview, never a dull moment with that guy. The goalies are quirky, but this guy takes it to a whole different level and shout out the flames fans because it looked like a playoff atmosphere. I know. Just playing Carolina on a Sunday afternoon. So wonder about 34 saves in your night. Just how you felt and what you saw as you looked out from your crease. Yes. I felt nothing. The problem with me is that I have a lot of fun playing. But when I start having too much fun, it makes me into from an unconscious goalie to a conscious goalie. And my conscious brain is really bad at playing goalie. So I have to let my unconscious brain do the work because it reacts a lot quicker. When I'm having too much fun and I'm smiling and I'm talking to everybody and I'm hanging out, what happens is that shifts me into more conscious brain goalie. And then I can't react in time. And then I'm slow on behind the play. And then I give up seven goals, you know. But today it was just unconscious. Don't think about anything. You know, if you ask me how I may say, I have no idea. Just my unconscious brain does it. And that's what you work and practice for, you know. Well, you felt nothing during the game, but I wonder what you felt like after when you're doing the three stars and you hear the crowd. And when the buzzer went, that's when I was like, okay, now you can let it all go. So you get a huge rush of like dopamine and sartana and adrenaline and just like goosebumps. It's the best feeling in the world. It's like the biggest reason why I love to play. And yeah, then you can just let it all out. Now I can smile and enjoy myself. But yeah, like TV time out in between period, I'm like, don't smile. Don't talk to anyone. Just focus on your game. Let your unconscious brain do it. And it was great. It worked. It worked. Congrats on everything and feel all of it. I also got pretty lucky to like three posts, you know, no goals off my own team. So that's, you know, hopefully that luck continues that I continue to mix it. Keep it rolling. Appreciate it. Yes. Thank you. Okay. I need this guy and also like at the end, they cut out when he's like, why is your microphone growing right now? Because maybe he was on the drums. So, but you might have been on to something. But what a character. Um, I'm gonna get him an invite to peaking. I would like for him to be the first current NHL player on the episode of peaking. If that's what that would be. Imagine him in the wanton feeding the information. I'd be like, you guys in band for something and be nice mid season hike in band. Get the snowshoes out. You'd be unconscious for that. Last, last team I'd love to bring up just to show my puck knowledge compared to YouTube dummies is the wild. The wild are incredible. And and you guys, I remember you just just just cowering like a little puppies, little cats saying Billy G were so sorry when he came on to talk to me. He just talked to me. Um, the wild look incredible. They're leading the central Caprice off has 10 goals already. Okay. I think Merle said he couldn't win with that guy. Now, Merle's are arguing. Let's see if they ever win with him. But I'm watching this guy. I'm watching that release against Columbus yesterday. The guy shoots it with the puck in the middle of his feet. I don't even know how that's possible. He drags that thing in. It looked like a hit crossbar and hit bold. He's foot. No, no, that was back bar and the wild. They look phenomenal. And they got injury. They got seven guys up in the press box. Spurgeons out. You know, favors out. They're dealing with all this bullshit. They keep winning. And what do you have to say, Biz? Uh, I'm a fucking idiot. That's it. I'm a fucking, I'm sorry to all you wild fans. Um, I think Billy G mostly took care of it. Whatever all you wanted to say to me. Yeah. You're right. I did cower because I love Billy G. And he's 20 times the hockey mind that I am. And he proved it. And this is the shot that he took Caprice off as we're showing the picture. There's a Wayne would be saying goalie stand on your fucking feet right now. But I don't think it mattered what any goalie did. That was absolutely sniped top cheese. How's your mom of the Polish princess back? And, uh, yeah, I'm a fucking idiot. Sorry, sorry, wild fans. Heinz said after that, that you're off. I think he said he's going to be a top two. It's going to be a top two line center in the NHL. He looked good. Their team looks good. Now, obviously that the, the, the question remains with Quinn Hughes. But fuck, are they going back to Vancouver? They probably are after they play Edmonton. Is that his first game back there? It might be
gee, check that quick. Sunday. Yeah. Sunday. Quinn Hughes back. They should not be booing him. No, do you guys agree with that? Absolutely. Absolutely. And I just want to quickly mention here, uh, central, uh, Minnesota is leading the central with 13 points right now. I had the missing playoffs. Still early. So said Vegas was going to get off to a slow start. They're eight and two and they are leading the Pacific. And, uh, yeah. Yeah. He said the leaves are going to the cup finals and they're last place in their division. So they hit keep on coming. Yeah. What? Yeah. We want it. We want to, uh, we want to thank Kirk Mueller. Love you guys. Hell of a weekend of hockey. And now we got the, we got Brady returning, right? We got Quinn returning to Van. And we got more action coming this week. So everyone have a wonderful week. We will see you on Friday, Peace, Dr. Reese's. [Music]
