This guy played 1,100 games in the NHL and then played five years in the NHL to end his career. And he wasn't full around the outside either. He was like grinding in your face in front of the net. Those five years in the miles. That was a great interview. That'll be coming out in a couple of weeks. Biz, how is his vacation started with the parents? Yeah. Yeah. It started yesterday the first full day and it was a tough one, boys. Oh no. So if you've watched, if you watch the BC peaking season, we go to a place called we peaking, we peaking. The next one's coming out, I think early September. That's going to be the Lake Havasu one. But we went to this place called Cooms where they have this like outdoor. They got all the beautiful fruits and vegetables are locally grown. You can go into the one of the supermarkets. It's got like every kind of cheese and all these unreal homemade pepperoni sticks, beef jerky pastries. Like this apple strudel. I can't even show you. Like look at this apple strudel. Look at that. Apple strudels are phenomenal. Like look at that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Same better. I've seen so of I not even trying to be a dick. It's like you can't see much of the apple. There's too much crust in the top of that thing. Oh, fuck you guys. It's vacation. It's vacation doomed. Yeah. That looks store bought but that's what was bought. Okay. So we go in there. We had a great a great lunch. They went on a little bit of a tour beforehand. I'd already been on this tour with Donnie to see all these old trees. Trees that go up to about 800 years old. So they actually had a tour guide. So he was driving them around before that. So I met them at Coons. Okay. Because I got my sister, her kids, my dad. So there's six of them. So we finish off at this place. It's got the goats on the roof. Everyone I said. Yep. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That place. So I'm parked probably 15 minutes down the road. 15 minute walk because it's packed. You know, it's like the the high season here. So I gotta walk that way. So I give them a kiss to say, oh, hey, I'll see you at the hotel. Okay, I great, you know, great, great afternoon. So I walk towards my car. I stop at this little antique shop just to take a few peaks inside. And then as I get to my car, I get a text from my sister and she goes, we're on our way to the, the, the, the, whatever, the ICU. We're going to mom fell down and she's got to get stitches. So buddy, buddy, the minute I must have said by them, they're walking up to go meet where their ride was picking them up. And they got these speed bumps, but the speed bumps aren't colored yellow. They're the same color, color gravel is the road. You got to, you got to make sure people can see that that's you got to make sure you could see the nice little suit for you. There's a law in the United. She slipped on a shrewdle. So she fucking toe picks on the speed bump, buddy, go down, even the hands couldn't stop her boom right on the corner of her eye. We're off to the, to the ICU unit over the fuck you. Eight zips in the corner right here. Eight zips for you, buddy. I'll tell you what though. Not yet, not yet, but she was a trooper. She was cracking jokes, chirping herself, even when we were signing in with the, with the nurse and stuff like that. So a couple of clicks for Yoli. Yeah, I'm breaking in the new feet. Yeah, that's the hits cock going. Guys, fire and puck center on the ice once you got out there, buddy, just eat shit in front of everybody. There's probably a hundred people there just like having a chuckle at Yoli's expense. No, no, no, you see somebody fall like that. You're going to be a real piece of scum to be laughing at that. There had to go to Canada. They're all running to help her, little friendly. Yeah, I thought you were going to say one of the goats from the roof fell off in the itter. That's tough. That would have been tame. That would have been better. Yeah. That we really would have got some money out of this. Maybe I could have got a 30 footage of that. I could have sold an ad on that video. Did you, did you have to drive her? Did you have to drive back up and pick them up to take them to the hospital? No, by the time I got the text on, I was, by the way, their phone service was absolutely brutal at this place. So I got the text. So she just sent me where they went and I drove down the road. It was like 10 minutes away and they were already there kind of checking in. So spent, you know, two, two and a half hours there waiting for her to get stitched up or wherever it was. And then on she went, but hey, man, trooper, she was up today buzzing around all good to go. Okay, no conkey. Yoli's a tough customer, man. Yeah, that's where you get it from. Yeah, you always a tough cut. You had Irish traveler by the fucking goats at the at Coombs. So that was the start to our vacation. But after this, I'm going to mini putt. And I'm, we're going to, I'm going to go play against my sister's kids and her husband. No, no mercy on these guys. Zero mercy. Body. I told them yesterday at lunch. I said, you know, I'm bringing them out on putter, right? Yeah, yeah. I'm going to, I'm going to dust you guys and they're like, oh, Hanik, what's the Hanikap? I'm like, you ain't getting nothing over there. If there's one thing you can do in the game of golf, too, it's pot. That's it. - Everyone saw on the most recent bagger with the Bob, the sports boys, the collared boys, taking them for a walk, you were reading the greens, we decided, you are our guy putting our guy. - Thank you. - Thank you. - How old are her kids? - 10. - Yeah, 10 years old. - Yeah, that's old enough to like, yeah, like I'm not. - Take them to the woodshed. - Oh yeah. - Well, they're twins, right? But one boy, one girl. So they're probably gonna be working together. They're always attached at the head. This is, last year was the first year, they didn't do, they're like, they're grayed together. They split them in the classes. So, these two work very well together. - Okay. - I'll be ready to go, but that's it boys. Just getting a little bit of R&R here on the island. And what about you guys? What do you got going, yeah? - I saw the order, you know. - Same, same. - What'd you think? - Loved it, I was in, I was in, not had, did not have the best set up. I was at the, you know, have you been in the movie theater here in Nantucket? - No, it's, is it small? - No, it's a great movie theater, but then there's like a separate one that's just basically like a screen that comes down and then just regular chairs. And that's where we were at for the Odyssey. - They didn't get the big theater? The Odyssey wasn't on the big theater? - Not sure why they were playing a young Washington instead of the Odyssey and that one. - Don't even have that. - I thought the movie made me exactly. - I thought the movie was insane. I know we talked a little bit before about how much AIDS is actually in it. That was incredible. - Hammer's teeth. - You see him third time. - Everything. - It's like a war in the movie. - Is it weird? - Is it how his normal teeth are? Did they kind of darken them up? 'Cause it'd be weird if a guy had such nice teeth at that. - I think he said that- - He said that- - Didn't he tell us that the producer told him to never show his teeth? Didn't he say that to us? - He wasn't showing his teeth that much because your right is you don't notice the big Steve Harvey pearly whites in the middle of trying to get home or on the Odyssey. Now, I thought the movie was excellent. Loved it. I want to see it again because I didn't see it in IMAX. My theater experience though. It was one of the all-time worst theater experience. Not the movie part, but going there and getting home. I couldn't find tickets in this movie. Every time I looked, there was no tickets and then I looked and I see, oh, Foxboro movie theater in Patriot Place, which is right around Gillette Stadium with the Patriots, but they got restaurants, obviously movie theater, all this. I'm like, oh, there's a bunch of tickets tonight. I'm like, this is perfect. So I bought the 730 tickets. Then I found out the babysitter could come at five. So then I saw there was a 630 film. There's tons of tickets for that one too. I'm like, this is my lucky day. I'll go to the earlier one. The movie's three hours long. I won't get home at 1115, 1130, you know, I'll be home earlier. Well, we get in the car to leave. It's usually 25 minute ride. It says an hour and 15 minutes. I'm like, what the fuck? I look it up. I didn't check. Gillette had monster jam for the monster trucks. Oh, no. So I'm like, oh, no, I can't do this. Like, sitting in that ride on Route 1 to get to when there's anything going on at Gillette. This is just horror film. - To my man. - It was horror, horror film stuff. I don't even go to Patriots games because of it. So then we turn around and I forget it. We're looking at all these other theaters. Of course, there's no tickets. There was tickets because there was a monster jam. By the way, so I'll hold on. So then I'm like, well, what else are we gonna do? Let's go. I got tickets to the 732. She's like, you had tickets to both of them. I'm like, yeah, well, first what I've explained that. Turned out just sat in the traffic. Now, at one point, I'm like, what are we doing? Like, it took an hour and 15 minutes. It was, we barely made the 730. We're sprinting in there, basically. And that's my problem with the theater when I tell you, sprinting into this theater is nearly impossible. What they've done is, well, by the way, I get out of the car. I get out of the car and I hear the announcer over the loudspeaker in Gillette. Like now racing, so and so and so and so. Megalodon can't race. He's in the shop or something. Megalodon's not at the booze I heard from the crowd. It was like, 'cause Megalodon's one of the kids' favorites. The monster, I think, the shark looking one. So I'm like, oh, fuck, man, those kids are rattled in there. But we get into the theater. If you thought these kids were rattled up to no Megalodon, I'm standing in line to get, this is like, it's a newer theater. It was just redone. But it's back to like going to the theater in the 80s. There's no, there's not, you know the, there's hero acts at all the theaters now, right? Like you order food at your seat, stuff like that. And I don't know if you've been to a theater like that. But this is not one of those. You just go up there. They got popcorn, soda, whatever. I'm waiting for a while 'cause we're kind of late to the movie. I get out, now I go to the guy who gets your ticket, right, it's on my phone. I'm holding like 20 different things. I got popcorn, I got candy, I got, you know what? I'm loaded up long film. I'm like, do what theater is it in? Here's my ticket, right? Like he's like, no, no, no, no, no, I can't tell you what theater it's in. You gotta, you gotta find out what theater it's in from the guy that just sold you all the popcorn. I said, no, no, I'm like, no, I'm like, dude, I just, I was going, no, no, no, I'm like, what are you talking about? And he's like, I know, it's crazy. And I was, I looked back and I said, are they gonna let me in front? He's like, no, man, you gotta wait in the line, I, buddy. I was, I was like, where's the man? It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. And all of a sudden, this guy's walking towards me with like a bowtie on real nice guy. I'm like, I can't wait in that line again, man. You gotta tell me what theater this is. You, he's like, I'm like, just go look at the theater. Tell me what that is. - Who gives a fuck? - Have you ever, I missed the very beginning of the movie. So I still have to go back. I couldn't believe that you had to get, and then why they don't tell you when you're, I got a large popcorn. I'm like, you think the guy'd say, hey, I gotta scan your ticket to see what theater you're in. So the whole idea, but then the movie starts and it was incredible. I mean, I'm telling you, I love this movie. I want to talk to R.A. about it. I'm not gonna give spoilers out. Avery definitely spoiled a part of it. Like I was like, oh, but then not really Keith because of what happened after either way. Then I got out, I didn't, there was still traffic leaving. There was traffic leaving. I then sat in the same traffic leaving the monster jam. So I got buried on this night. You know what, great. - I get what you're gonna ask, Dan. - You're gonna say, if you ask someone, hey, are you going to see Odyssey and just say, where are you going, where are you heading to? - 'Cause then they had to scan the ticket. They wouldn't scan the ticket till you knew what, I'm telling you, buddy, this was one of, it was crazier than some of the one-eyed monsters in the Odyssey was just trying to get your ticket punched and be told what theater to go in. So kind of a ridiculous experience for the movies, but like I said, the movie was great. And then that was actually after that day I played with Celebrini. So maybe I was already on edge. And this is all on me and this isn't that crazy of a story. Kevin Hayes, he set up golf with me and him. We're gonna play Will Smith and Celebrini. All right, awesome. Hayes, he had to back out last minute. I'm with Foles, I'm like, you wanna go play? - Get out of here. - Yeah, Foles, like all right. We waxed these two up and down this golf course for four hours, just a complete shit kicking. We get to the 18th hole. Now I've been told by my accountant to never mention financial figures on what we're playing for in golf. So I'm gonna take his advice. But we're playing for a good amount of money. They go double or nothing on 18. Okay, we win that. Now I'm laughing. Now old sandwich has a 19th hole. Okay, it's got one little extra green. And when you walk off the 18th hole, there's a shot from 100 yards or 140 yards. Kind of like a little gambling hole, a buy hole for say. They double or nothing again. We win again. I mean, I'm laughing. I'm like, oh my God, I'm like, this guy's new contract. 18.80 year. I mean, what the hell is he gonna do? How's he going? - He's playing for free in two years. - Yeah, for sure. So they want to double or nothing one more time 'cause you can go up from a different angle and hit an 130 yard shot. So the same green, but a totally different like place where you're hitting down from. And I hit it to about 15 feet, a very good shot. And I'm humping air. I'm yelling, give the sharks my address. Like I'm like, this is false, this is unbelievable. Celebrity goes after me and hits it to about 12 feet. And I was like, oh no, I'm like, fuck, I gotta make this pot because like this kid seems like one of those guys, you know? And he was horrible. He's gonna be good at golf. Like he kind of just started playing. He's got a nice swing, but he must have shot 98. He was horrible, but he hit this shot. And I'm like, oh no, and it's me. And like my, my past as an athlete. And if I don't make it, then it's him and who he is. Sure shit, I miss. And these guys read this pot for, I'm gonna say 10 minutes. I have a video, false video, the entire thing. Will Smith lining up the ball, then he's going back. Celebrity standing over. He's like, move your hands, two inches to the right. They're just adjusting like a video game. And what happens? He nailed it. He cans it. Of course he can't it. And at this point, the groups behind us were now coming up there and they're watching. 'Cause I think two of the kids played with Will Smith at BC. They happened to be out there. And it was like, I just knew it. I knew it walking down. I said, if I don't make this pot. And even if I do make it, he's making it. You know, some guys have that, that it factor. So that was it. And then I couldn't get into the goddamn movie theater until I got my, the general manager to help me out with Tom Loat theory was. 1-0. Overall great Friday a great what I was going to say what a great Friday for those two guys and they probably headed into the weekend. They went right down to Chadum and then they were going to Nantucket the next day. I saw them about to get abused. But did you see them in Nantucket on Nantucket? First thing Celebrini says to me with tell you about my putt. I swear to God. I go. I think I heard about it two minutes after. Oh, yeah. He left out the fact that he shot a 98. But he was telling me all about that putt that he buried in my face. Fulls was like, Oh my God, I can do an addition on the house. I can do it. And it was just it was it was it was a it was a balsy move. It was a big time hot by a big time player. And I guess we that kind of lead just into when that contract news broke, I was like, wow, I was more amazed at just five years. I'm like, so this kid's going to be a UFA with $100 million in the bank when he's 25 years old. Yeah. 26 maybe or maybe 25. Not exactly sure. Awesome for the sharks. Awesome for him. I don't know if it was a real quote or tweet. I saw that said, Mike Rears, like I would have given him whatever he asked for. I think I think the full the full 20% he said. Yeah. Okay. That wasn't fake. He's 20.8 or something that yeah, I was. And then all of it well deserved. Well, yeah. I mean, this guy's a unicorn voice. I witnessed it a unicorn. Yeah. And he's telling me his younger brother. He's like, my younger brother is disgusting. I think he's 14. So I think there's another one of these things coming. If he does come, they have to set it up where he gets the play they play in the same team. Yeah. If he's this good, you're saying in four or five years. Yeah. I know. But he'd have no he'd have no control where he gets draft four or five years. He'll five years. Celebrating will be a free agent. He can just go to whatever team drafts him. But what did you think when you saw the number? I think that I don't I would say thank you, Leo Carlson offer sheet because that kind of I guess set set sort of the around where he was going to get. But I don't really think it mattered. I think that San Jose is one of those markets where it's like, okay, we need to keep a guy like this. You know, there's other obviously other markets where he could thrive from a from like a marketing standpoint and marketing dollars. But he's had great success there. He broke the all-time record for most points in the season last year and a second year in the NHL. And that's I mean, he's Sydney Crosby 2.0. He's the he's the perfect player. He does his own dirty work. You see these clips of these shifts where he's out there of just busting his ass for a minute straight, stripping guys, getting another four check, backtracking. And and and then he could get it done offensively and pretty much do whatever he wants with the puck and and to also do it with listen, like I'm I I'm not trying to take anything away from Sid, but in in Sid's like second and third year, they, you know, they're bringing in some some veterans to surround them with this last season. Their team was was not very good. If you look at their team on paper, you'd be like, it's a little bit underwhelming. And the fact that he did that with having all that pressure and and also doing it in an Olympic year where he went to the Olympics and they pretty much rolled that line out there with him on it every other shift when they needed a goal. So you're talking about the best Canadian players in the world and he's the guy that you're looking to at that age. He's a freak guys and I hope the league gets about 10 to 15 more of them because it'll just raise the bar for everybody else and money well earned. But like you said, five years, that would kind of suck to have to fork over that much dough and only get the five years, but he had him by the balls and he's got all the control and and shout out the paperson and his team for knowing all that. But more importantly, him for putting in the work and being the freak freaking nature that he is. Yeah, I don't think there's when I saw the number two is just like, yeah, whatever number it was going to be, it wouldn't have rattled me just because what he brings to your team, what guys will want to do to go play there with him. I forget who we were talking to might have been talking to whoever, but he was saying that all the guys on the Olympic team, like, I want to play with Celebrity. I want to play with Celebrity. So like he's already got that it factor at such a young age. And I mean, wait, you spent four or five hours with him. Like he just seems like such a level headed kid where it's like, it's not going to get to his head, him signing this big deal. He's still going to be trained his ass off, working hard every shift. So I think it's well earned, well deserved and, you know, good for both sides. I would imagine obviously if you're a San Jose fan, you'd like to see him for eight years, but ey, listen, you build around him. You get five on real years out of him and, you know, then maybe he does want to stay and they're building something and they're winning cups in the next few years. And you and you say like, ideally, yeah, you'd rather get him on more years if you're if you're my career, but you're also like not pissing him off. You're not starting any sort of like, oh, like why why won't they kind of give me this? And you're just like, Hey, we love you. We want you to be here. If this is what you want, and this is what it takes right now, here you go. And then there's no bad blood. You know, you just look at kind of like, look at what we've seen with different teams and pissing guys off and kind of how it goes. So I, I'm excited. He is really like a very genuine person. You would never know what talking to him friendly to everyone just seems to kind of know he's got the world by the balls right now, but not be cocky about it at all. So and and a big time potter. This also puts a little pressure on the sharks where it's like, you know, five years, let's get moving here for making some moves. They did do some stuff in the offseason. Now, now with knowing he's making 18.8, are you a little bit more like the money they threw it that true bud and now they got darn out like does that worry you a little bit? I don't know what I didn't think they had they had to do it like they just needed to bring in some veteran defenseman. How many more years those guys have for each? I mean, they have a lot of prospects. He was telling me like they're draft this summer. We talked about that right after the draft. All the guys they've draft before Misa like he's pretty fired up about what it's looking like there and how quick they think they can get it going. Was he talked to Stenberg? I didn't ask him that. That's a great question. I was. I was not a folk. Me and false are just like what we're just in our game. Like I didn't even remember you. So it seems like these guys are all dialed in. It seems like they're on the ice constantly. We've we've had this discussion a lot. That's just that's how a lot of guys are doing it now. And looking back, I've said this instead of bagging myself on the bike or bagging myself on sprints, I think I would have just skated way more had my cardio always be on the ice. Like why mess around with other cardio if you can just do it on the ice constantly. And then you never have as many guys around though. I know, but I get an actual good skate. I know, but I think even if it was you and I, we could have gone out there and bagged ourselves with like drills and different types of things where, all right, we don't have to do. I don't know. Maybe that's where I'll do our guys still. I was doing it. I just didn't invite you. I don't need that. I don't need that. Shit, man. Thanks a lot. So I don't need that guy on the ice. The sharks. So it's like, that's like prime NHL fandom, I'd say. Yeah. I know for sure. 95. They had a really good team, too. And they were supposed to like go far. And then in the first round, they faced Montreal, they lost. So like, I was at the first two games. So yeah. So it hurt. But at the same time, I was a big fan of sack, it can forceburg. And then they moved on to Colorado. So it was a big Avalanche guy after that. Do you remember going to games in Quebec? Yeah. It's still there. It's still there. Still there. New one. But it's a new one now. They don't really use it anymore. It's kind of like, now there's a big debate on what they're going to do with it. But like, right beside it is a brand new rink. Because it seems like every year or whenever expansions talked about, it's always Quebec should get a team like, oh, how much do you think they deserve a team? I mean, I think it'd be great. I feel like it became a lot stronger in the past 10 years, I would say. And yeah, hopefully down the road at some point, I know now there's, you know, creeping up on the amount of teams that we have in leagues, so maybe it'd be a move or from a different franchise. But like, I would love it. For the fans, for the kids to have that as well, because I grew up having, you know, you know, idols and guys that were in, you know, in the same city as me and, you know, playing the NHL and having that dream is pretty special. There's like 100 10 51 13 65 15 26 13 21 and like keep going and going and going and going but All of a sudden you're in the NHL and second-rounder and like I don't know what your expectations going I've always wanted to ask you like did you have any idea you'd make the team no not that year because they couldn't have even thought it I'm guessing no I there's no way I mean I as you said I was a second-round pick and For me it was more when I got the training camp was more like let's leave an impression, you know Yeah, hopefully you know next year or the following year. I was supposed to like go through the rookie camp and and come back to to juniors to batters and in the Quebec League and the Quebec scout at the time Daniel Dore was Canami is like, hey, you know, you had a good camp. You're gonna bring you to regular camp first win down Yeah, so I'm like that's just amazing and then first week of camp. I slowed down the first couple game for a couple days I was more like an off like C. Joe Thornton. Yeah, merubo was on team then so like and he came to me again Which could host to him for like doing that, but he was like, hey, just you know, don't you know Don't think about who you're playing against who you're passing to but like just keep playing your game. They really like you So that was kind of like the the moment of being like all right like you know, they're watching me. So like that's just like even more More energy, I guess I don't know how to say it or explain it, but anyways So go through the first week and the first game was coming up on the weekend. It was Montreal. So I He can't he comes to me again. He's like they're gonna give you a game and after the game you're going back to juniors Like you had such a great camp. They want to give you a game So I go there. I play the game and I score an overtime and they're like you coming back with us. Oh, I play this you must have been so happy at this point Thank you. You're like, oh my god. I'm that was wild. I'm surviving this. Yeah, I know and I was just Happy to play that game to be honest my whole family drove down. It's about three hour drive All at the game. I had some friends. That's not three on three overtime at that point either, right? No, yeah, I don't find it out real old school Yeah, it was yeah, no, you're right and then Yeah, so I scored that goal They're like, hey, you're coming back, you know for the Boston. So I go back on the plane and We had nine games nine exhibition games back then, which was a lot more than now. I played all nine And signed the contract at the end. They signed me. Yeah. Oh, I bet they weren't sure though if you were gonna like because you could men Isn't it the eight games thing then like did you when you sign where you're like, I'm right here all year or not You know, they're like they're gonna try and at that point So I signed the contract Which means I'm gonna start the year And they signed Travis green the next day as a center. I'm like, oh no, I'm going back like you know There's no way they're gonna keep me and then so I played my first few games and they switched me to the wing and Yeah, I guess we were on the road played the California trip to start which was pretty amazing as it all started an LA for oh, you know I think it was Dallas and then we'd play in Jersey at the Garden the first game. That was my first NHL game And it was a tie there were ties back then. It was a tie to two And back then Jersey didn't give up any space right it was just a boring two-two game And then we went to that Dallas and California trip and and I didn't know if I was gonna make it and after I think game Maybe seven or eight. They're like hey You should look for a place. Yeah, yeah, when did you decide to live with Martin the point so that's that's what happened so Mike Sullivan and that's Marty that told me that I guess Mike Sullivan a coach went to Marty and said Can you help Berge like find a place to stay he's you know, we're gonna keep him and he said well If he's okay with all talk to him, but like I'd love to for him to come with me So took me on his wing and stayed with his family and I mean that was Beyond like It was surreal to me to have him. How was your English at this point awful? Okay? Yeah, I remember like I could barely be commercial him on the Zamboni with Uh, Ray Croft. No, no, it was uh, Samson off Sergei Samson off. That was Razer. Oh, it was Razer. For Bruins fans and even hockey fans like O304, the Bruins roster, Thornton, Glenn Murray, Brian Roelston, Mike Knubel, Samson off. Nick Boynton was there. Travis Green, Michael Neelander, a couple games, Hal Gale, Rob Zamner, like this was. Oh, wow. This is a firm group. Gone char. Yeah. That deadline going back to like date because the Bruins were known as like a pretty cheap organization back then, right? I bet they were just flying you up there so they didn't have to pay for your flight from Boston. You know, it would be 100% quicker to get them to back. Yeah. We'll give them a day. Yeah. Yeah. We'll boss you to Bathurst. Thank God you scored. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you made it. You're going to take a break off set. Who'd you play in game seven? Who was that first round against seven game series? Montreal. Oh, my God. Where was game seven? Boston, we had the whole mice. We should have won that series by by mile, but I mean, it could was obviously Montreal, but I'm just saying, like, we were up three to one and we lost that series. I remember that. That was the end of all this. So this is, you came in an interesting time too, because you came up, came in pre lockout. I know. That's so easy. I mean, before we get there, though, I want to talk about the draft specifically. Like, did you know where you were going to go around? Like, did you think you would go that high? And then like, what was it like as a French Canadian kid getting drafted by the Bruins at that time? Because I feel like that rivalry was still a thing. Yeah. I loved it. I was, I was, as I said, I was a big Nordic fan. And when they left, like, I was not a Canadian. So like to be with the rivals for me was, was great. So that's, but like the draft, like, I, I didn't know, I had no expectations. I obviously, I fell onto the radar. Like, I wasn't really, you know, I wasn't, I, the second round, the third round was kind of my hope. I knew the first round was not like kind of out of the, the equation. I didn't go to the, what was that game back then? Like the prospect, prospect. I didn't go make that or cherry. Was that something at a time you're like bummed out about? Or were you really, I started on the fourth line in bad. There was that for my first year. I was on the fourth line and it kind of moved up in the NHL one year. Yeah. Yeah. It's 70 points and like that. Yeah. Cause that first year in junior, you played four games to kind of get your feet wet. You came in and played that full season before you made the NHL and like you ended up at camp and started fourth line and just progressed your way up. Yeah. Exactly. So like that. So those, those four games were like around Christmas time. They, they had a lot of injuries. They call me cause they were playing Quebec City. So like, I was right there. They're like, do you want to? So I, I came in for a few games around that during that road trip and then went back to midget AAA. But then it's the following year. I still wasn't like a sure shot to make that team. I was a fifth round pick in, in juniors. Yeah. So at 13 or 14, I know we're kind of all over the place where you like not one of the big names in Quebec City. I mean, you must be pretty good. I was a good player like on, on my team. Yeah. Um, but I don't know if you guys remember like Steve Bernier, Mark. Oh, yeah. I played with them in under 17s. Yeah. And they were like the guys like they were like above and beyond it with Crosby and Ramoski. Yeah. Exactly. Rusein, Danny Rusein. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. So those guys were like the, you know, there are above and beyond everyone. They were like, like man playing with kids basically at that age. They were like amazing. And so they were like the ones that were supposed to be like, well, that ended up being first round picks. And but you could tell like they had some special about them. But like, so I kind of fell because of that on the radar a bit because I was playing in the same league. Um, and yeah. So like got drafted in the fifth round juniors, got a couple games that that same year when I got, I went training camp, got cut. But then when played midget replay, got the four games around Christmas time, came back down. I think the following year, that's when like I was, I was saying like I wasn't a sure shot to make that team. So like I was at the end of training camp, like obviously ended up making it. But I was on fourth line and kind of worked my way up during that year to eventually being on the radar to at the draft. Because like that was something that I, it's funny because like my, at the time I had like an agent, but he wasn't, you know, he was more advisor, kind of advisor. Yeah. Exactly. And then, um, he called me in January and he said, um, how's everything going? It's going well. I mean, I, I'm having fun and whatnot. And then he goes, uh, I was talking to Chicago the other day and they, they, they, they like your game. I was like Chicago. Like who you talking about? He's like the black ox. I'm like, what? I was like, what do you mean? Like, so I had no idea that I was like, it's almost like it, it kind of, like good. It was over my head. The fact that it was, it was my draft year. And you were, it seems like you were probably were not reading the press clippings, like eating things about yourself. You're just kind of worried about playing hockey and getting better. And that, this is a really small town. Like, you know, Yann's nose. Like it's. So yeah, I was just hanging out with the guys and like, do you think they'd say starting off on the fourth line? He had to be pretty good defensively. Like do you think that led to like the type of player you became where you were just, it was so responsible, right? Like because you had to be that way, maybe at like a younger age. And in a league where I feel like it was very point driven, like the Quebec league, like a lot of these guys, 100 points, 150 points. Yeah, I think the, you know, it definitely made me like conscientious of like, you know, my defensive game and like making sure that, you know, because if you make a mistake, if you're on the fourth line, like, yeah, you're not seeing the eyes again, right? So like, obviously, there is that part, but also our coach that year was really big on like face-offs and like playing the right way and like, you know, like not taking any chances. And, you know, I'm a type of guy I'm wants to do right by the coach. Yeah, you want to press your coach. Right thing. And like, so like that was like, I took so much, I put so much emphasis on like face-off and working on it and like making sure that, you know, was doing the right. So I think that helped me a lot that year, that learning process of like playing defensively sound, but also like, you know, try to eventually bring some offense to it as the year progressed. All right. So take the, the rookie year happens, which is just incredible, like the way that all works out. And then all of a sudden, like boom, leagues canceled. Right? Now, since you're under the entry level deal, like, was there any discussion of anything or was it providence? Like, you knew you were going to be in providence, which I was in the age of that year. It was a great league. Oh, yeah. Team five to seven guys on the NHL team the next year. But was there talk of going to Europe or anything? You know, guys, yeah. And I feel like those players had the advantage coming out of the lockout. There was a lot of like old school guys who they probably had big contracts and they took the full year off and they came back and it felt like the game because of no more obstruction. It was like another, like another level, another speed. And yeah, like what, so what, what was all that? Like, indeed, like the, the new rules we did in, during that year, they tried to know red line. So we were a million penalties at the beginning of the alley. Yeah. Oh, sure. All that stuff. Like we tried, like we were kind of the guinea pig, guinea pigs for that. So like, it was helpful having that year. For sure. For myself, like, I never really considered Europe because like, so the, my junior team was like pulling hard for me to go back. Yeah. But that's like, but then I was like, well, I really wanted to go to Providence. The main reason was to continue my development. But also the second was to continue to learn English because it was so bad. I was like, I got it because last year, the year before I was with Marty, right, playing, speaking French, speaking French to the family, pretty much the whole year. So then like, you don't really, you need to immerse yourself if you want to learn and really improve. And so like I was like, I need to go live on my own and like learn English and like develop as a player. And I knew that the league was going to be a great league. You know, like, there was a lot of talk of like, a lot of guys in my situation or the younger guys that were going to go play. Like I remember Spedza went and played. Yep. So a lot of guys, their team was awake and he was talking about Bingo. Yeah. You saying how they ran through the regular season. Then you guys beat him and playoffs. And I actually wanted to ask you, if you remember, we played you guys in Providence. And it was an afternoon game. And there was 16 anthem David Kochi fought Colton or I don't know, I mean, you've played so a lot, buddy. Kochi must have got to go tall. It looked like me. I was in his blood, reached the blood, reached Boston from the Providence Arena from Kochi's nose. But I actually, I knew Colton or you guys have, but you had Brent Thompson. Yeah. Oh, my, you had Brendan Walsh on that team. It was Walsh. Yeah. Jay has your ship. That was a tough team you guys had. But every team was like that though. Yeah. There was a big guy then. Yeah. Meets. There was at least three or four fights every game, every game. Yeah. But what's cool about that? Oh, sorry. Go ahead. I was just going to say from playing in the NHL with the old rules, going and then in the NHL with the new rules for you. Was it like, oh my god, this is so much better, because the D back then were big, holding you. And I'm sure you were 18. You were still grown into your body, not as strong. So was it much easier for you in the NHL that year as opposed to the NHL year before? It just felt like it was a lot more fun. Like, you know, you felt like you had more room, more time. Obviously, it was nice to have more power plays here. You know, like, but the red line made such a big difference. But then it was a big adjustment, like defensively, like a neutral zone. How do you defend? And so there was all that. But like, I can't imagine, like playing with a red line anymore. You know what I mean? Like Wayne says they should bring it back. I asked him what would be one. I said, what would be one rule change? And he said he would bring bring back the red line. He had a, he had a great reason. reason as to why my CT's kicking in right now. I can't really remember what that was. That's so tough to just bring up something Wayne Gratsky brought up in a crazy rule and then not knowing what he said. Yeah. Okay. Well, there's a 10% chance. We drop this interview. We'll have you call so we can then after the interview. Give it, give it, give it, give it. But that year. So the coolest part for you that year was you leave middle of the year and you go to play for the greatest world junior team. Are you automatically that's ever that's ever kind of been fielded. And that was the first time I think you and Sid played together, right? For some. Yeah. And I just remember it was in North Dakota. I remember you guys. And it was like, Oh, Vetskin vs. Rozby. And and Maulkin was there too. And Maulkin was there and like take, take me through your memories of that and also like seeing Sid who hasn't even been drafted yet. You must have been like holy shit. Who is this guy? He is. I remember the first practice when Sid was on the ice and he. There's a three on two. And I don't know. We kind of like regrouped in neutral zone. And he ended up being in the middle. And I passed to him and he went right through both these with such pita. I was like, what is going on? Like, and it was like Shay Weber in like for enough. Yeah. I was your, your decor was like a Hall of Fame decor. So it was, I was like, Oh, my God. So I'll just give him that puck. I got so I'm still like these. Yeah, he was on a different level. He was 17, too. Like with the bubble and. Yeah. Yeah. But nine, too, was any right? Exactly. No, that team was was incredible. I mean, so much fun. And as I. Like, I've never really had, I guess I played the year before at the Worlds, but like, I didn't really, I didn't know much of these guys because I was in part of these games. You know, they're young. There's 17 or under 18, whatever that's called. And so like, I didn't, they really know gets laugh or like Carter and Richards and all these guys were new to me. But like, I was so impressed with the talent and. And the character also, it wasn't, the guys wanted to win. And like, they were like, chirping each other and like, in practice, they were going hard and the intensity was always like, because they're almost like dealing each other out. Like you're on the same team, but there's some competitive. No, yeah. Right? You're all that plan again. You're all that. I guess that's not playing against them. Yeah, I mean, going through this, the tournament scoring leaders, you led the tournament scoring. Then it was Getzlaff, Ovechkin, Jeff Carter, Malcolm, Crosby. And it like, you just keep going and going. It's nuts that you got to kind of experience that, which is probably cool to break up the HL season two. Yeah. You get to go away for two, three weeks. It was a fun, fun experience, but also it was a nice little break up in the season. Yeah. Especially at that time, I think there was talks about like, if we're not going back to the NHL halfway through, it's, you know, it's over. So like, knowing that, like I went over there, I had the chance to like, live that experience and, you know, I'm looking at it as the glass half full, even though you and I missed a year playing the NHL. I had a chance to play the world. Juniors and like, on one of the good teams that, you know, has been, has been on the ice. I've been till that point. Like, had you faced ever faced pressure like that because I believe it was the year prior, where it was the Patrick O Sullivan goal off of flurry, right? It was. They've lost the goal of the goal medal. We, so all of a sudden, you guys have this stack lineup. Half the team was a year under age of the max, the year prior. So now all of a sudden, you have the funniffs, the sea Brooks. I think Colburn was on the team, Crosby. Obviously a year older, like, was that the most pressure you'd ever felt to that point to like bring home gold for Canada? I don't know if we felt pressure all that much. It was more like the expectations inside the locker room was so high. The guys had a chip on their shoulders because they lost a year before. Like, as you said, I think it was 11 or 12 guys coming back from the year before. Even Dexon was on the team of all guys, like MacArthur, I think, was on it. Yeah. Like he was there. Dickey. Dickey on that team was crazy. He just fourth-line grinder brought up. Was he shaving his V-neck and his chest back then and his triceps? Him being so funny, man. He was the best in the locker. The one-liners that he had, he was a great guy. But yeah, the guys just, I think because of what happened the year before, it was just like, they were on the mission. Everyone you could tell, there was nothing was really going to stop them from getting that gold that year. I was running along and it was a lot of fun to be a part of that. What was the gold medal game? Was it against Russia? Yeah, Russia. Okay, and what was making progress? It's one. Oh, God. That's a state. That was the double deon game. Yeah, the double deon. Yeah, that's right. Double deon. In release in each one. You mentioned going to Providence, learn English, then you go into a locker room like that with all, like, coming to those guys ended up being captains of NHL teams. And for you, you're known as one of the best leaders. Like, when did you find your voice to be that leader and be able to speak out and be who you are now? Yeah, I think that year was, I was definitely helpful for me to start, I mean, going to the world juniors also, the fact that, you know, I played the NHL the year before, you know, I was bringing some experience to the locker room. And it's, you know, I coach was Brent Sutter at the time, put a name on my jersey. So that, you know, obviously, meant a lot. I was still maybe a little shy with the English, but once I was with guys my age, it kind of helped like finding my voice a little bit not, you know, you're more confident. Yeah, I'm not feeling so bad about like messing up or whatever. So like that, that tournament really helped me with like, leadership part, but also leading by example, but and learning from some guys too. Some guys were like, you know, Mike Richards was a guy that was pretty impressive as a teammate. And he was, he was a menace on the ice. He was, you know, he was a game exactly. I played under 17 with him under 18, him and Jeff Carter. Like just his stick was so good. Maybe not the fastest guy, but just fight anyone. So that locker year, him and Carter came to Philly after their, yeah. And then getting the second round, we were up for one in the third period, game six, they won seven, four, they ain't a plane. You guys in the club play them in, we lost in, once it's six, but and they won it. They won. Yeah. Yeah. They, oh, the year of the lockup. Yeah, they added those two. And it was, it was, it wasn't fair when they added those two guys. Yeah, they led the, the league in scoring in playoffs. Yeah. Carts and Richie, I think, do that out of juniors insane. Oh, and now we, and like we said, that league was legit. Talk about the first three years of your, your, your like your professional career. So you make it out of camp after only playing one year junior on the fourth time, you're beginning that year. Yeah. Yeah. I get the round back in the queue. That three, four year span. Then the next year, you go to Providence, you get the win gold with, with Canada and experience, you know, that, that year down the miners with the new rules. And then that next year, you come back and then 23 games in the season, Joe Thornton gets traded. Yeah. What's the fucking goal? I'm so shocking for it. Yeah, it was, especially this early in the year, like, it was, yeah, it was wild. There was a crazy time for sure. Now going back to the year you lost to Montreal, that was when they were all over him. He had broken ribs, right? And the media, it was, and the fans were like, oh, he's not producing. And it's, and I think a lot of people who knew, and you, I'm speaking for you, it's like, they can't even breathe with a broken rib. Right? Like, that was part of it, I think, wasn't it? 100%. Like I, I was always impressed with Joey, always wanted to play and threw so much. Like I remember, like, earlier in that year, my first year, he, he got into a fight against Lindros. And Lindros broke his face like his orbital bone and his nose. And he got surgery. And then we had a game like the next day or the following day. And I remember a trainer being like, hey, you're going to take them a few weeks off. Like it's the regular season. And he was, it was on the ice. You played the game. No, she was wild. Full cage, full cage. And then, yeah, he was in love with the game. So much being questioned. I know. Yeah. No, that was not, not it. Like, he was, he was as tough as they come, but also his love of the game was special. I don't think there's anyone who loves the game more than I'm still in the walk. They'll do it in hell. I call the locks for the boys. Yeah. I'm fucking out of mine. I love them. But it must have been, too, like, they knew they had him where, which is weird for you, I bet, right? Yeah. You're 20 and you're lighting it up that year. So they're part of it is like, oh, we kind of got our guy, which is maybe awkward for you. I don't know if I saw it that way. I mean, I couldn't tell you really what the reason why they treated him and what really went behind the scenes. But I was still young, you know, like, I know, I needed some time to really like be the face of the team. But yeah, I mean, it was a, it was a crazy, crazy year. Obviously, it was, it was definitely a tough time around, you know, the fan base and like, there's a lot of things going on around that time. The building wasn't always full, you know, there was, there's some tough years early, but, you know, obviously, it was all worth it in the end, I guess. And so those two years out of the lockout, point per game player right there, your games like really in your 21-ish. And then all of a sudden, that Randy Jones hit. And, and I think, would you play 10 games that year? That was my 10 games. Did you ever try to come back during that year? I mean, it was kind of similar to what Sid went through later, where you're, it's kind of a scary time, right? Like, you'd been through a lot, physically and mentally to not know if you were going to be good again, right? Yeah, no, for sure, it was a, it was more mentally, that was, that was the hardest part. You know, like, I probably could have played at the end. I think I was, I was ready to play. And I'll never know if, you know, what was the best decision at that point, maybe I would have been fine to play, but they shot me. I think I was young and they wanted to shot me down and like, you know, let's start over. Let's have the whole summer so you can really build your strength back and. And they weren't the playoffs anyways? No, we were there for the first round. We lost in the first round, but like, we were kind of rebuilding also, that year. So it was, yeah, it was a tough year. It was mentally really draining and it's more of the questions that it goes through your head. Well, the questions that people ask you, right? Yeah, you've been asked all the time how you feel now. You're going to, you know, you're going to be okay or, you know, are the media asking if, you know, you're going to feel it going to be scary. We go back on the ice or feel it going to be the same player. So, you know, a lot of soul searching at that point, but like it was something that obviously made me stronger than I learned from. I guess like after that, I mean, it was kind of like you're saying the rebuild happened. What? Besides then, I mean, there was names that came in and Craig, she becomes a player and then the biggest thing always like big Z and what he brought and survived. And then you have to see him go through everything, but you must have been realizing we're building something special here. Right. And what did big Z act like when he came in? Because we've heard the stories of camp when he's doing 35 pull-ups and everyone's like, oh, you were still pretty young when he came. That's 21. Yeah. Jesus demanding, right? I mean, like, so I played against him right when he was in Ottawa. So like, when I found out that we signed him over the summer, it was like, oh my god, thank god. You know, like, I don't have to face him anymore. But I guess like what I didn't realize is he places has hard in practice. So that's like, it was like, so I asked, I'm more awake. I always tell that story of like usually it come to me and be like, hey, let's set the tone today for practice. And he always wanted to start drills. And it was like a one-on-one drill. And I was like, yeah, let's go. Like, let's, let's, you know, let's play hard and let's, let's set the pace. And I go into the corner and he absolutely buries me like from behind too. And I'm like, I'm on the ice. I fall down and then the whole year. No, but that wasn't that year. I'm just like, that kind of jumped a few years at that point. But like, and then he's, I'm on the on the ice and he's pushing me down. And like, my helmet's over my head and I'm like, what is happening? And then like, Claude, like, feels bad. He's like, all right, like, you know, I'm waving to the white, uh, the white towel here. Like, so like, he blows the whistle. Like, goes back to our line and goes, great job. And I'm like, yeah, for you, you abuse me for 15 seconds in the corner. I go, it, anyways, I always thought, I always tell that story because it's kind of like Z in a nutshell, you know, like, you just can't turn it off. But like, what he did for us as a team and, and individually, like, just to like, find that edge and find the intensity and like, don't take a practice or shift or a workout, you know, off. Like, you always need to be on and, and, and that's the culture that he, that he brought in. I mean, it's just leading by example every day, right? They didn't have to say much. You just had to look at you like the wrong way to be like, all right. Like, I'll dial it back in, you know? So, and then yeah, you're right. You know, they, they brought in some character guys and some pieces that came in and like, wanted to be a part of the solution and, and, and really bought into what, you know, the leadership group wanted to sell and, and the coaching staff. And, um, but it definitely started with Z, you know, and, and, and, and it's intensity and, uh, and you, you're right, you know, the, the pull ups and a training camp and back then we used to do the, um, the wing gate. Oh yeah, the one, but it was, it was the first and the rule. You feel like you have a puke after, yeah, a hundred percent, but he crushed it by like, it wasn't even close. Like the sec, it was first, but then the second was like, I don't remember exactly what the bike was broken. Yeah, they came down to base you what you're, you're what your job put, right? Yeah. If you're able to sustain, uh, anyways, but like he was, miles ahead of everyone else. So, and then he was kind of like mad at us because it was kind of like, hey, we need to like, we have a lot of work to be in front of us. If this is what we're showing up with. And so then that's when like in the summertime guys, like, which is about him. Yeah, but also like I think it was great for him to be like, you know, this is unacceptable. Like these numbers are like embarrassing. Like we need to like figure it out. So a lot of things happen, but obviously that part of it, that competitive drive and that leading by example of like this, never being satisfied from Z has been pretty special to, to witness, but also I think it's really helpful for us because we were all young at that time. I tell the story all the time when we were during the lockout in what was that 12 when he came back from China, came back from China. We were all skating at BU. It was like the dog days of the lockout. And he flew overnight landed came skate. And we were like two minutes late getting on the ice. He comes in the locker room. Get the fuck on the ice, everything screams. We're like dude, we've been doing this in September. Leave us alone. He's like, get on. He landed a three in the morning. I'm like, go see your family man. He was a machine. What was your introduction to Brad Marsha? Like when when did he how when did he come in off? I didn't know. I thought the cup year was his rookie or he played 20 games. Yeah, I didn't know that. I thought it was that first. Yeah, no, he had a couple training camps, I think before maybe one training camp they went back to juniors and another training camp where he played in the A and then came up and played those 20 games and then the following. So I think it was his third training camp his rookie year. Was he being a rat out there? Like did you notice him? Like was he on the radar? He was like, I remember actually when I was coming back from my concussion that summer. So I missed that whole year, come back in the summer and there was like dev camp. They started doing that. So Marsha was there and I asked if I could go skate with the guys and like so I was there. And I remember doing like a first practice. I didn't know Marsha at all. We do this drill and it's a one-on-one in the corner and he comes in so hot and he like and he hits me. I'm like, who is this guy? And he's obviously like he's he's not the biggest and I was like, what's happening? And he was so relentless on the park and like hitting me and like so like I was like, all right, like this. But I liked it. I was like, this guy is a gamer like he's like, I knew what he was doing too. So like from that training from that camp and they asked me they're like, if there's one guy that like stood out and I was like, this guy like Marsha, like he's he wants it. You could tell like, you know, I don't know if you guys saw, but like Mars is saying that we said he was a dev camp for the Canadians. I think it's from this past year and he said, if I you know, if I have like a ball and I leave it at the center of this locker room, who's going to leave with it? Right. You'd be on the team who's got I guess the guts and the will to go above and beyond and really do whatever it takes to make the team. That's what Marsha you know kind of felt to me that during that that week of dev camp. Like he was just like like a dog on a bone at every play. He wouldn't give up like let's say like you go for like, you know, a shooting drill early in practice and just take the one shot going the corner. He would go for the rebound, grab the rebound, try to go score. Even if like, yeah, you know, the goal he was still watching the next guy coming, right? You still going put the puck in and like why I don't like how Talbot was a little bit. Yeah, yeah, Talbot was like that too. Yeah, but like Marsha just was so skilled. I remember so I know I remember watching the finals and I correct me. He was on the fourth line at one point in that year. Yeah. And then by the finals, you guys are playing incredibly gathered top line and I was like, this guy like he's so much more skilled than I thought, playing against him early or watching. I was like, wow, he's like toe dragging guys and like he had moves that I didn't expect where you say Talbot didn't have like that aspect of it. Oh, no, which was even crazier. Oh, no. No, he definitely had that skill skill set that, you know, but then he he came in and he was willing to do whatever he took to stick and to be on the team and if it meant to be on the fourth line and be like, yeah, you know, a past he's, you know, he didn't care. Like so and could host it to him for doing that and obviously he had it in him too as well. But for Marsha, I think it was more like the growth you know, from like the the steps that he took from from like the beginnings to like to now really like it plays all just like maturity wise. Yeah, I think he was it was hard. It's almost like he was stuck between like he had to be that like four-checking guy who would get on your skin in that rat, but yet then he had to be like a top line player. So he was trying to find that balance. Like, yeah, there was a few instances, but like he looked back on hockey history. Like in the area, him lick and call hands face. Fucking hilarious. And it's just what it is and he would be the first to say After the incident to be like, yeah, I know you don't want to say anything like I know I just the wires crossed Yeah, exactly on the best many times I had to like put my arm and around him be like buddy like simmer down like we yeah It's get back to the game like we need you, you know, like would he ever bite back at you or would he always no? It would like that's cool. No, we had that relationship right like we were really good friends and we still are so like it's Yeah, it was more like and I was you know, it happened to me as well where he would be like hey like you know Let's focus back on the game and like, you know, let's forget about this or whatever. So like we had You know, we've played together for so long that we were able to like be able to talk to each other and like and have no hard feelings From it. Take us through kind of like the team like on the way home and basically the fact is you just pounded them every home game that series. Like, did you guys know going in this thing is so far from being over going into game three? I think we did. I mean, so to go back to like the first round, we're down to nothing against Montreal. That was the parents, middle finger. Yeah. So like, we're down to nothing heading to Montreal for game three. We lost the two home. Yeah. So that was wild. And so we had that, we won the series. So like, we had that in arm. Okay. So like, hey, we've done it before. Like, so we kind of had that speech would be like, Hey, and we did it on the road for you. Exactly. Now we're going home. And like, so I think we had that confidence of like, we've done it. And we've been through so much during, like, that was a wild, you know, run. I mean, all the playoff runs when you go all that all the way. It's a pretty wild and the long, you know, journey. But we went seven the first round. We won the fill in four seven again against, you know, Tampa. So like, it's not like we, it was an easy way there. So I think like that experience and that that knowledge of like, hey, like, it's not going to be easy. Like, where we have to find ways, was in our minds. And, you know, we got home, obviously, it's a much better feeling than going game three. Yeah. Real, right? So like, at least we're like, all right, let's just get, let's just do the job at home, stay in the moment and go from there and just beating this shit out. So the one thing, the one thing that I remember from from talking to Kevin BX about that is how like confident they were until game seven at home. He said that he could sense the tightness in the locker room. Now you guys going on the road for game seven after forcing it to game seven. Like, what was your guy's demeanor? Were you guys like we're playing with the house's money? Were you guys were confident? Or were you guys also tight knowing that man, one game to decide whether we're standing up champions or not? No, I think it was the opposite. It was more like a school play hockey. Like it was, it was a pretty cool. You had that feeling. You guys were going to take it down. We got on, I shot with one at home. Like it's kind of a little bit on the road. When you go on the road, I think the fact that you're on the road, that's crazy as it sound. Like you're with the guys and like you just have that you go for dinner tonight before and we actually had it a team dinner at the hotel. We just stayed in because like it was crazy over there in Vancouver. Oh, yeah, it was wild. You know, we'd get boo that we'd like with like some restaurants didn't want to like host us for like for dinner. Like it was pretty wild, but it was it was awesome. I had the same time, you know, but that being said, we had that team dinner and I remember sitting with Rex, Mark Recky and just seeing this demeanor of like he grabs a glass of red wine and he's like so relaxed that I'm like, all right, you know, like this, this was and then I just asked him was like, um, if you've been in game seven of the finals before and he goes, yeah, twice. I was like, and you won both. And I was like, I like that. Yeah, he was so, I don't know. I just liked the way that he was like, and it was his last game, right? He was retiring after that. So like just to see him like, yeah, just like enjoying the moment and like almost being like, hey, let's enjoy dinner now and we're worried about the game tomorrow. Well, you know, it's pretty cool. Yeah, see a veteran who done it and be like, oh, he's he's twirling his wine glass. Rex fell on all those ends of him. And I'm like, both freaking out beside him. I'm like, all right, I guess that was a huge cup final, too, because it was the first time in a while that it was a US team versus a candidate team. And then there was all the hate with the Bruins and the canucks like burrows, bit your finger. There was a lot, like, I think they called them the city insisters at some part of Martin Martin, Sammy. Oh, my air and Rome hitting Horton and knocking him out of the series. Horton poured the water on. I brought a water from Boston. What was that? Did you like, did you know that was going on? No, I didn't know the water. But the hit on Hori, that honestly, that that poked a bear a bit. Like that really kind of turned the air. And the next one was like, eat one, wasn't it? And the guys like, we, yeah, it was like almost like, all right, we're we going to do this for Hori now, you know, like it was, and we had Timmy. Timmy stood on his head, like, and he had like the hit on Sadine, like one of the games. Oh, yeah, when he was looking up at the puck or something. Yeah, exactly. But having him, like, you know, like his demeanor also, like, just always so confident and like, would you guys ever be like, what the fuck is this guy doing? You just skated out to the blue line to hit some guy. It was almost amazing with like his competitive drive and like his will to win. And you know, he's, you look at his career, man, Timmy, like he's been like through so much and he's overcome so much adversity and, you know, almost like had to prove people wrong, almost all the time, right? This to be like, all right, to eventually become like a number one goalie. And then when he was given that chance, like, he freaking ran with it. Like, it was pretty impressive. So like the confidence that we had, like, having him, having Z behind, like in the back end, like, or, yeah, I feel like our structure helped us also. But like Vancouver was, they were wagon too. They were a good team. Like, it was, it was a battle. It was, I feel like Dennis Sidonburg is such an underrated guy. He was incredible. If he wore regular skates, son is like really good. And his son apparently is a complete wagon of a human to one of these sides is a machine. And he's like, what? I think he told me he was 12 or 13. I talked to him the other day. But that being said, you know, there are professionals. I mean, Lou's been around for a long time at that point. Yeah. We're going to win one road game. Exactly. We've lost three, like we're due. Yeah. And there were tight games too. You know, they weren't blowouts in Vancouver. Yeah. One of them was, I think borrows in OT early. There's, there's a note to you. So for us, the things for the first one, I think, and in lap here had a game winner on the game two. And a third game, I'm not sure who got the game winner. Yeah. That's true. Where you were blowing them out at home and they're close there. It's like guys, whatever, like, hey, we just have to go out and win one. And you're right. Like, it's the, and I can, I can see it on from the van, the Canucks side where they're like, you know, like, game three was eight one. Game four was for nothing. Either way, not close. Yeah. No, no. Game six. Game six was five, too. So another, another one. That is, that is not, I mean, what an amazing run that was though. And for you, just to like, CZ raised the trophy, kind of an all time screaming. It just had to be just such an incredible feeling with those guys that, that had done it together for a long time. And we're so close to being broken up, I guess. Yeah, I know the first crew after they won that we hurt. To go all out. Because it was bar story. That was because of bar story. Yeah, help me in my bill. Yeah, it was the jet bars to like just port noise getting Pixar saying it March on saying March. Yeah, you know they got the call after two weeks probably go go home. Go home Yeah, I believe this is it. Yeah, it's time to go train. So I guess like um. Thorny got a call from I don't know if it's Kim or Swings or wherever but like oh, back then it was Peter Sirelli, but I don't know who called Thorny, but like, hey, make sure you talk to Margin sags and tell them to leave the town, leave the city. So I guess Borussia told me that he's like, you know how it's kicked out of Boston? I don't know how far he anymore. I'm going on a week. Remember his voice singing black and yellow was like, but he was mangled. I didn't realize he was, yeah, when I called him out on that, I was like, then he started singing. So like, we could talk more about that. But then, you know, there were some heartbreaks for you. Obviously, we haven't mentioned the gold medals in tan and Vancouver and sochi, but with the Bruins like that lockout short and season, that was the year that it was like, this guy's playing with a punctured lung and what you went through in that heartbreak and game six loss. They got the two goals quick. Was it true? You weren't going to play game seven. Yeah, I don't think I could have played it was too bad. Yeah, because at that point, I was at the hospital and they had to do like that, I had that surgery on the long to get back up because I was it was collapsed at like, how did that happen? Yeah, how did that happen? Oh, I broke my ribs in game two or whatever. And then I kept playing and eventually like the rib punctured my lung. Geez. Yeah. Who got you? I couldn't even tell you like it just started from like like a weird play. Like I think it might have been Seab's Seabrook. Like it kind of I was trying to shoot and I was off balance and trying to push me and I fell on the ice and I fell awkwardly and I was and I think that's what it broke. Well, you had a separated shoulder to it. Yeah, that was later. That was like game five. Oh, jeez. Oh, my gosh. I don't know less than this is based after one hike. This could do the podcast with the air operation. When the rib punctured the lung, was it like, like, where were you? Did you feel that right? I don't know. It's weird. Like I felt like something poke. Yeah. Like, you know, like a sharp pain and then just went away. So I'm fine. And eventually, yeah. So Jesus. I mean, that is like, but that team was so good, man. That Chicago team was incredible. Yeah. Like that was their second, I think second. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They had a good team. I, um, there's there's tight, though. Like it's hard to like, at that point, you know, like it's anybody's game, but they, I mean, could host to them. But I remember where I was, where I was in Vancouver and I was I was like walk walk it by a bar. And they had the game on, like at the at the end. And then they went bang bang bang. Who got the first one, Bickle and bowling. Yeah. No bowling got memory shift. It was like, I think bowling even, like almost thought it was, he didn't think it was all the time. Yeah. It was gloves. Yeah. Just got the winner. What would be the winner kind of broke up the core after that, though. That's when Sagan got traded right after that. That was after that. Yeah. That's it that year. Yeah. I'm not mistaken. Huh. We haven't asked about Crachey, though, who we got to do a sandbag or which great guy like playoffs performance. Oh my god. That guy in the playoffs. He was a machine. But it was always like, you look at Stanley Cup championship teams in Pittsburgh. And it was two great sentiment. So like it was always, you know, you're never together, unless it was power play, right? But you just knew he had his own line. You had a line. And that's kind of how you always knew he'd be ready to go in the biggest games. Yeah. I mean, he was like, I don't know. I think it's his demeanor for Crachey. Like he was always never too high or too low. He's like that for anything in life. By the way, like he's so like laid back and such a great guy. But like it's just talent. It's just the way that he would slow the game down. Obviously him and Luch and Horde who was a menace on the ice, right? They were like a pretty amazing trio for for a long time. So like it was it was great to have him. You know, like I said at many times, but like obviously we were competing, you know, like being both Sanemen playing on the same team and like in a way that competing for ice time. But we never felt it that way. We never really had that that sort of like unhealthy competition. It was always about, you know, like, you know, they would have a good moment, a good game. And I was always extremely happy for him by his versa. Like Chris was always great with me and always a lot of respect for each other. And I think that helped also like kind of for the rest of the team to realize that, you know, like we can all be, you know, ourselves and be successful and individually. And like that's going to as long as we're like bringing it collectively. And I think that that's spoke volume for the rest of the guys that, you know, like, don't they're not big or they're not playing about exactly like what you're not getting or what you want. And it's more it's always about, you know, the team and Cretch was really good with that throughout this career was always taken whatever ice time in whatever minutes that he was getting and making the most of it and and always respected that. And he was an amazing teammate and obviously player. Just like I'm sure you don't want to talk about yourself that much, but like, I think you bark of copetare like these two two hundred foot players that just do everything right, but also if you guys wanted to, you could have had a hundred points every year. If you just cheated the game like some guys do a little bit, but what's kind of like you're in even with Cretchy learning from you? What was kind of like you're going into a season for you to have a good year? Was it a certain amount of points? I wanted to be the best defensive player because he did bolt so well. I never really set like goals for myself as far as like points or statistics. I think I was always trying to worry about, you know, the team's success and like that's how I would like, I guess, rate my game, you know, and I always felt like I wanted to bring more to anyways, I always wanted to improve and like, felt like there's always, you know, another level to get to or like other players that you're like, oh my god, you know, they're able to do this. That's try to work on that or this. And so like, you know, I've, it was maybe based on my overall game. Like if I was able to be strong on the face off, it was all, to me, like, it was all, it's always been a game of details. Yep. And if my details were good, like, the rest was taking care of itself and like the junior coach almost said. Yeah, right? Yeah, it goes back a long way. Yeah. Wow. Because like, if you think about it, sometimes like, you know, like you're, you're not scoring for like five, six, seven games. And now that's when you, you're being asked about it. And that's when it gets in your head a little bit more. You know, like I think like it's, it's one of those things where, if you think about the end result and you think about scoring goals, you're never really going to get there because you don't take your, take care of your details. But if you always worry about your details, winning a face off, making it, you know, getting the puck out when it's time to get the puck out, giving, making a nice pass, when it's time we're shooting when it's, you know, you're always going to eventually, or have a good forecheck eventually, you're going to be in the right place at the right time because the puck's going to find you because you're, you know, doing the right things, right? So like, I feel like that's, that's something that I've always kind of preached was for me to take care of my details and the rest of my game will follow. And, and, and and it's more of the collective side where like, you know, I wanted to make sure our PK was good or face offs, you know, that's for my team. Like, I want to make sure like, I'm effective for them. Like, so that was how I would rate my, my game for the most part. So if you don't probably young kids for sure to hear, right? Oh, for sure. So much put into stats and the money and I get it. And you understand like where they're coming from, but it's like, God, there's going to be a lot of kids who have to become different type players play for a long time. You know, it's funny too. I think like it's when like, uh, around the years, that like 2011, those years when we had those guys that, you know, as I said, the, the glue guys and the guys, you know, that that really bought in the things that we would say that the young guys was, you know, if you win, no matter what your role is, you're buying yourself like another four, five years of your career, instead of like thinking about the individual stuff and like, maybe scoring 20 and then I'll get a better contract. Think about like winning with your team and doing whatever takes the, and I think like the Panthers is a good example, right? Got a AJ Greer and these guys that like came in and let, you know, played tremendous minutes at the end and like really were effective. Now there's headlines. AJ Greer is going to free agency. Like when they, if he hasn't played for the Florida pantherin, Macaron, yeah, like just like, yeah, any type of success. We were, you know, on the road, you have the momentum going, then you have like 10 to 11 days. It was like at the time, it's like, it's nice because you can rest, but also it's it's a long time in between, you know, series, but that being said, you know, when you're a game seven doesn't matter, you've played six before. So you should be, it should be ready. Obviously, we, you know, like we we didn't just in play, which then, you know, we had a good start of that game and great start of that game. We should have scored a couple actually, Bennington stood on his head, made some great saves. And I think that kind of took that first goal. Obviously took the win out of us. And then we couldn't really recover and that was that was it. So I mean, obviously if we score, you try to get it back. Sometimes you look back, I mean, I said that many times, I think like, of course, like the championships and, you know, the things that you're able to accomplish as a team, you know, that's what you look back and you appreciate. But the losses, they hurt, like, it's hard to, you know, to go through that. So it's obviously still something that is a sensitive subject, but like it's at the same time that you have to be proud of what you've accomplished still as a team and to get all the way there. And like hurts more than like almost a winning thought. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you try to think a little bit about legacy too. Imagine being able to bring the Boston Bruins to Stanley cups. Like, you know, maybe I don't, maybe not you because the person you are, but my mind would have wandered a little bit. Being like, fuck, Crosby was able to get three of them, you know, like, yeah, yeah, those types of guys. And I put you in that category. So to get there and to be so close. But hey, at least you get to say you won one of the two games seven of the Stanley Cup finals. You've been legacy is just fine embossed. Yeah. Like we fucking love you. I would take a bullet for you. But like I also looked at my kids and I was like, I actually want to run with them. You know, I want to, you know, grow up them to grow up and have me and around and be able to actually play and, and, and, you know, and be able to, to be active. So that was part of what eight and under at that point. Yeah. Yeah. My, I think he was seven my oldest. So, yeah. Uh, and I think, yeah, I think mentally, I was, I was there. I was, you know, I had a great career. And, um, so there was not one reason really why I did it. It was more, had you told the guys before that game? No. Okay. I did not. I said, I told the guys, I never, I guess I told March, you got told like a lot of guys I knew from even the start of the year. Um, if we go back to the, to the summer, I called Cretch to, to come back because I wanted them to, because it was my, I told it was, wow. Yeah. And, and do you think that that, um, like, like had influence on his decision to come back over? I don't know back. I hope so. I would be okay. I would be okay or understand if at one point the league in the next CBA was like, it's like limiting teams. It's max three a team. I would get that. Yeah, that'll be what's next. Like the legal want that next and they'll probably get it. And how many my guess would be like five per team you can get, but I don't know. I hope everybody gets one like from the player side of it. Like I get it. Like it's ruthless. It's cutthroat. You don't want to get trading of families to deal with from a fan element. It's kind of like, oh, fuck all these like sick trades are getting nicks because of these, these, these no move clauses. And I think that did they not say like 60% how what percentage of players now have them to some degree in their contracts? Wasn't it like over 50% of guys now, out of entry level contracts. 50% of the league has no move clauses. I don't even know like a modified no trade or a certain amount of team some type. Yeah, yeah, I think progressively it's gone up. Maybe it's a breach like 37% or something, but they have a, they had a chart of year over year. How much it's gone up. Maybe 50 is an over over exaggeration, but obviously entry level players can't have them in their deals kind of crazy here. So just across different leagues, the NFL eight no move clauses, the NBA two no move clauses, the MLB 35 no move clauses, the NHL 245 no move clause. And there's what 700 players in the league. So yeah, they're, they're gone in for this and they just redid the CBA. So that it's going to be a while before it can get changed.
