But the other night, or was it for breakfast? Yeah, no, this is for dinner the other night. I'm going to the bathroom, and there's this guy with his wife and two kids, and he gives me the. It kind of caught me off guard. I was like, what's this guy doing to me? Hey, buddy. So I got my first one on the road where I was a little bit startled. It felt great. So shut out, pinkies up, and I've been having a ball in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I'll tell you. That's awesome. I didn't want to admit this part because it was funny. It's very funny. But it got to me a little bit. But I was walking today, Keith, after camp. So we're at the Yandel Hockey Camp weekend, Nantucket. It's awesome. I went for a long walk after, like five miles. I wear the weight vest. It's really pathetic looking. Get out of here. Yeah, buddy. He's a stay-at-home mom. I'm a middle-aged mom. But a family, I'm assuming it was the son. He looked like a 16, 18, right around there. He went first. Then the wife went. Then the dad went, and he turned around as he went by me. He's like, what? What's up? What dog? And I was like, nothing. What's up, bro? I actually gave him the pinkies up. And then as they're continuing to go, his son was like, who's that? And he's like, oh, it's Ryan Wynn. He's like, he's a squid. No. No, he didn't. He goes, that guy's a squid. That's what I heard. I wanted to fucking run after him, but I had a weight vest on. I can't run without a weight vest. And put a stick in the kid's spokes. Ryan Goggins couldn't get him. That guy's a squid. That's all I heard. He called you Ryan Goggins. Actually, it's funny. It's funny. To say that, like two days ago, I was at the same place going for like a dip in the creek. I was eating at Nora's and I went to grab a dip in the creek and somebody honked the horn, but it was the guy in the passenger seat and he leaned over and gave me the finger. And like gave me one. But do you think he knew who you was or more were you in the middle of the road like texting? No, no, no. I wasn't in the middle of the road. I was like off by where Nora was walking to where the creek is, like on that side of the road. Was it a random middle finger? Just a random. Yeah. Did you give him the pinkies up back at least? I mean, maybe it's because I keep taking all the seats up at Nora's or, or, or that guy's like, I've listened to his show. He has 19 favorite teams. Fuck him. And they're going to lose again this year. It's just, is what it is. But we got a rematch within those two teams. Then I believe, is it, is it Mississauga or Brampton? Where's that? But I think everyone who was there was, was pretty complimentary of the, of the venue, the area. I mean, that's a beautiful time of the year to be in Boston early October. I'm fired up. I'm fired up. I still think it's crazy that he can make the national team. Like, like he's having a hard time keeping up. Actually, shut out nose face. USA just won it. Correct. USA saw it. I saw a picture of a nose face in the camera. Oh, geez. Another tournament. This guy's face. But yeah, what happened to the US one? What happened? What happened to the US one? We're down 2-1 to Belgium right now. We're even getting out of red cards, which apparently is impossible. But that was an amazing storyline. Okay. We got, we have to go over that now. I saw a few pictures that you posted. You posted on your, your Insta story. And I never post. You never do. And it was the first one on my grid when I, when I. I'm going to send this pic to G so he can include it. I think it's the greatest picture. He said it was his favorite. He said it was his favorite 4th of July of all time. You know he was posting a photo. How did you get on a float? So, no. So my brother-in-law's buddy, his cousin, um, lives in Nantucket. He runs the rink. He's a great guy, Brian. And he had said last year, so it's kind of funny. So they have downtown on Main Street in Nantucket, 4th of July. They've forever had this huge water fight where the fire engines come down everyone's bringing you know machine gun water guns and you're just it's like a war down there and so last year they actually there's a drought so they canceled it which was a big bummer and then of course there's a drought this year so word was that it was getting canceled again i was actually getting on the boat with the guy you give him that water so um this guy tom green that me and keith know bubba's bubba's is it uncle or something bubba's uncle yeah great guy he runs the car ferry the steamship this guy's a legend and i said to him like yeah usually july 4th they have this water fight it's just so it's like you're in 1950s america it's just the cobblestone just the whole vibe down there and and but they're canceling it again i was hurt because there's a drought the guy's like it's a fucking island like oh i know buddy i believe me i got no idea why they can't get water where there's salt water this year so i don't know i would be fine with that somebody somebody donated i don't even know how much water but they donated enough water where it was the law the guy said it he thought it was the longest water fight that had ever gone down downtown so this guy brian had said hey your kids and riders cousins are here they can ride on top of the 1926 fire engine like i'm talking it's 100 years old so that's the third fire engine to come you know the other two have the actual hoses this thing you were putting out fire in 1926 with basically something less powerful than those squirt guns the kids are using now but they got to ride in on the top so they pulled down main street and all of a sudden that this water fight begins now at one point i said i gotta get up on that on the top of that fire so i got up and as i got up brian brings me over a legit fire hose that's ripping water buddy i was picking people off that went downtown with no plans to get wet women with louis bags i was burying these things were shooting bag gets you five yeah yeah you know nantucket lady's got a six you get an extra 500 liters of water if you get the birkin she's like i'm like let me uh yeah let me pour the water out of your birkin bag before you go get a margarita for breakfast on the fourth of july actually fourth of july you see fudge kid around the corner you're licking your chop oh i would have had acid i would have had acid for him i would have fudge kid is the kid who called him a squid he's great i would have had acid i would have had acid for him i would have grown up now oh really we did think we were talking about this the other day i think he's probably like 18 now but uh so so we start off with that it was just amazing right you know you go down there and it was just an awesome time so this picture i'll show you guys now but g can put it in i mean buddy look at how happy i am and look at rider over my what would be my right shoulder your left i mean it's like you won the cup look at rider i i literally it looks like you won the cup i thought you were at the panthers cup parade outside of elbow room no i'll be in edmonton's cup parade next year we can talk about them in a minute what a wagon stan bowman is cooking cooking so so he's a red card so then we went back we went to the pool then we went over to keith and i's buddy zach he owns this great restaurant here sea grill and he had he had this this cookout buddy he had this restaurant obviously the chef is his brother-in-law he's doing all the cooking they had kegs of beers they had kegs of margaritas and they had kegs of beers they had kegs of margaritas and they had kegs of margaritas they had a volleyball court so we did that that was an awesome three hours and then we went down to the beach set up a giant bonfire there's the dunes kids are running up the dunes then you watch the fireworks from the harbor i mean 10 o'clock i sat there i said that was the best day of my life it was honestly one of the most memorable fun fourth of july so it was awesome man you want to hear how my my morning started i want to hear yours yeah so i'm walking downtown to go watch the parade my kids aren't here they're at camp but i was like i want to go see wits kids whatever see all the kids and i'm like i'm going to go see wits kids and i'm like i'm going to go and we were just going to hit up a couple bars i'm walking down there i just hear hey kiki they all got guns pointed at me just lighting me up i didn't plan on getting wet i'm part of this crew that just went down there not to get soaked wyatt squanto squanto and rider and lighting me up off the side of the truck i'm like boys boys it was unbelievable oh yeah it was so much fun it was just uh um yeah it was a it was a did you go to that same cookout afterward no we ended up getting lost in the sauce downtown and uh just kind of hung out there had a couple meals and then came back watched the fireworks from the porch and then just kind of shut down early night in bed by 10 30. oh god i love i love going all day and then being in bed at a decent hour that's the i do too but i have a brother-in-law moose who like you know you have this amazing day where you've been drinking legit 11 hours and then you get home and and he hands me like a quadruple xl with pink whitney mixed in i'm like buddy we're going tito's and pink whitney when i gave him a pinky thumbs i gotta have this with you i gotta have this with you so next thing you know it's 1 30 and then the alarm's going off and i'm like all right but you know what sometimes you gotta pay the piper in the morning for a day like the one we had i mean honestly too i got this picture of cowboys like i'll tell you right now this is getting framed for my office i mean look at this kid look at him with the steps up to the beach oh my god america just a kid he looks a lot man just a kid holding a flag it's crazy he actually is i never told you brie and i we got this sick server we built one of those farms that ai that's right elon gave it to you that's what took the basement so long we drew him up no it was going to be earlier but the basement flooded that's why we had him three years after why he donated the water from his basement that lemon that legit lemon you bought so listen uh yeah it's yellow you're right so biz last thing before the hockey we know every listener knows man you're obsessed you told gavin mckenna obsessed with fly fishing dude how'd it go today well first of all uh bad news on that front is gavin and uh and his team are out on the fishing lure no there will be no right hook yeah unfortunate i actually saw paperson put the x on that i think it probably came from the leaf that's sort of that's my guess you hadn't quit the leaves you might have right hook in like fuck i might be an outdoorsman bass pro shop legend like i might own bass pro shop what so i'm a little a little disappointed but you know um i went down to the south fork in idaho and i i caught like i mean look at this fucking fish i caught boys like look at that thing holy you can't show your hammer on this is is i thought you were legit about to show me a 44 inch or that hey and he's holding it up that's how you hold it out to make it look bigger so that's way smaller than it is hey that's the real pink he's up it's just that fish uh hey so is that your biggest one you reeled in but i caught like three or four that was the biggest one i got all day wow hey i go better than nothing i can't show the boys on the pod look at how small that is so little our is that a baby is that just come out of it how are fishes and eggs i'm guessing yeah that egg must have just cracked well you know what no that was the egg he missed with pissick well the uh the uh um our our fishing guy the same one we had last year adair what a this guy is a beauty dude he's got the best playlist me and ross went out again and i have a couple other buddies in town uh connor and arthur blue he's a local guy as well his dad's the coroner that's kind of fucked up isn't it yeah like people are dying to get into that business yeah i know jesus oh okay oh no oh no we can recover that was just a dad joke that was that's a dad joke they actually they were telling jokes on the raft that we were we were in and yeah you see this is fish that was the best joke of the day it's a same size as his hammer i'd have to get them to retail i'm not a really good joke teller yans you're pretty good you remember a lot of jokes right no no no no i think it's a dying breed my dad's my dad's good at it it's a dying breed though greg ogar we were talking about a kid that i grew up with is still hitting him yeah yeah his dad like will like just like basically stand in the it is like there's been like record-breaking catches because right now like it was a there wasn't a lot of precipitation snow this winter so a lot of it is melted off so a lot of the fish were and the big ones were caught earlier in june normally like july is the big month june was the big month so uh no excuses play like a champion i had but saying that there's sometimes when you're doing something you're doing something you're doing something you're doing something doing it, you'll, the bigger ones are obviously smarter and that was one of the things that he said today while you go they didn't be they didn't get big by being dumb so they know when it's like a fake lure so they'll go up to it and look at it and before they bite it if they know that it's shady they'll fuck off so like two or three times there were some like nice big ones and i was like oh fuck obviously i'm not gonna catch it because i'm stupid we all would have got caught before we could walk we would have been oh my god oh we got that whitney kid again yeah it would have been i would have been in a diaper like the fish that fucking biz just caught yeah no that one's tough that one was tough boys i thought you guys would have fun with that one but that is so good yeah shout out to a dare and he he's actually um he works at that south fork lodge and that's the one that that jimmy kimmel owns that's basically where you end you end at but it's like a they built like a like a two million dollar like place where you go in you can get all the toys that anybody can go in the area to buy from and then the lodge that they have there specifically for specifically for the people who are staying in like the hotel slash the a-frames and kimmel's got one there that's like just for him and stuff like that but like that whole part on the idaho side where you fish and like you you you get in the water and these little boats that they buzz you around in it is like it's stunning like i i have a video right now the last thing i'll show you about it there was like bald eagles like swooping in within in their nests and stuff just chilling as you're going by that's a bald eagle that's a bald eagle just chilling and then above it i would have been like i would have been like i wanted to see that thing get full wingspan go you know flying away that would have been sick he's like have fun with that appetizer biz there there there's that the one on the lower tier and then on the upper tier there's the other one but that one doesn't have like the the white head yet and so that one the only other hawk or something the only other cool thing i i saw was i was golfing three creek the other day and there was a fox or or maybe that was a coyote that went buzzing by while we were on the golf course so that was pretty cool too so you get to see a lot of wildlife here as you're just looking at you that's the ketones right there how how uh how far could you hit the ball up there he's like 220 but as far as that minnow i got 190 yeah it's like i pounded that one it's in the fescue short of the fairway beginning um but no it was it's a blast here man yeah get that one close so enough enough of my uh week and a half here in jackson but i'll be leaving in a couple days it's been a great trip and uh like happy canada day and happy uh fourth of july to everybody 250 for the the month of june july it was good to see him and he was telling us you know some stories about his dad i guess the services they had after was great he said broder was there sackick wayne gretzky darren mccarty had showed up and wow it was good to play with him he hits the golf ball buddy it's it's actually like he fucking murders the ball and that funny story told about the guy who won the u.s open after he played with him yeah he said that um who was that was the guy with the beard it was no it was the it was the uh the players it was um so he was at whatever course he was at where did he say it was a panther national i think so claude was there and and cameron young was there and he was hitting bunker shots bunker shots bunker shots and like claude went over and he's like dude my dad's like he he would say shit that i would be like cringing because he went over to be to give him a tip it would i said it would be like like a guy walking off a men's league ice shift like grabbing like mcdave and being like hey coming out of the corner you gotta try to like you gotta move your feet a little bit finally there he's like giving a tip to a top five golfer in the world but but i guess cameron young was just talking to him and they were legit talking about bunker shots and how to hit him and and then he won the players the next week and he said they were sitting there and his dad's like that's unbelievable so that cracked us up but um no other than that i was kind of just like like he said very relaxing over here but man when that news broke about big bad danny briere rocking the nhl to its core with a five-year offer sheet to leo carlson which was then signed for $18 million a year. I texted the group boys, and I'm not exaggerating. I think it changed the league forever. Is that maybe a little aggressive comment? I don't know. I don't know. Because look at now what's going to happen. Imagine, you know who the first person I thought about was? Like Celebrini and like Bedard even and all these guys coming up. And there's so many things we got to talk about with this discussion. But the main takeaway for me, and this is not just me saying it. Everyone's kind of rumbling around the news that Verbeek completely fucked this thing up. Oh, buddy. This guy, I mean, what a player he was. He had built Anaheim into a team where it was like, holy shit. You watch him in the playoffs this year. Like we could be watching a complete dynasty be informed here. And the whole organization's completely hosed now. Whether they don't matter. Whether they do match. They have to sign Gauthier. They're going to have to sign Seneca. But Biz, I'm going to throw it to you for just initial reactions about everything. Like going back to Verbeek. If he actually tried to lowball him and didn't try to get anything done before the offer sheet. Like we don't throw the R word on this podcast, but that's retarded. Well, listen, also, and I should have mentioned back to you. Elliott said today that they offered 12 and a half. Okay. And. And they said, like, an offer sheet's coming. So when they offered 12 and a half, Carlson went back with Cater. I didn't know Ryan Cater, Matt's son, is we're working together now. They said 15 a year. And he still said no. And it's like, what? Yeah. He deserves to. This is all over Twitter. Like there's Twitter feeds that recap Elliott and like what he says on his show. And that was the one I read that they went back to like 15. No, it's like, buddy, we have a fucking. You have an offer sheet. It's coming. Hey, shut up. Danny B. Elliot. Once again, we got no hats off all summer to him. I mean, what a run in everything we talk about as far as what's breaking, what happens behind the scenes, like 99% of it's coming out of his mouth or his Twitter account or his podcast. So obviously, like, we got to give him the recognition there. I am just in shock. And we talked about this, me and G before we started recording, before you guys even hopped on. Like, so Verbeek has been a little bit of a. Hard ass when it's come to contract negotiations, but you look at the two guys who are the main culprits of that. You look at Zegras and you look at McTavish. Okay. You know what? Given that maybe the year that Zegras had before he was offered that contract. You know? Okay. I get it. I get it. Same thing with McTavish. There's a little bit left or left to be desired. These guys are not Leo Carlson. There's 15 teams in the league where Leo Carlson would probably step in next year. And may probably be their best center. Right. And if not in a few years, he will be. And right now, I think it's safe to say, if you're looking at trajectory outside of Celebrini, he's the best young centerman available outside of Celebrini. I put him out of Bedard. If Chicago Blackhawks fans want to argue with me, whatever, you can argue with yourself. If they're arguing that they've never watched him play. The fact that, that they went back and try to work out a team friendly deal, which is clearly team friendly. It's a $3 million discount. And he was probably going to offer them three more years in term. It was probably an eight times. That's what I was thinking. I know. Eight times 15. So now all of a sudden you've put yourself in this situation where you've got to pay him three more million dollars and you're going to have them for three less years. And it ends when he's UFA, which is the dirtiest, most sickest part about this. I love this league, dude. Biz, it's the fucking best. It's, it's the best. And this kid. Obviously hit this period of time at the perfect time, right? Like we know the caps going to, I think it's projected right now, not next year, maybe not the year after, but the year after that 126 million, it might even be, I think it's 28, 29 is the year that it gets to that. So for a team like Philadelphia and many other teams who maybe aren't exactly in win mode right now, they're like, let's just solidify having our, our, our main center. Let's in, in, in retrospect to maybe next season. The season after overpay him. But by three years down the road, when the cap is one 26, they got their first line center. They have all these young stud wingers lined up and it makes perfect sense for them. And the fact that repeat couldn't see this coming from not only Anaheim, is it reported that other teams also put in offer sheets, but they weren't when I texted you guys, I texted you guys the night before that. Somebody just told me Seattle was offering him 17 and a half. I sent it to the group. I said, somebody just told me Seattle's offering him 17 and a half, a eight year deal on an off or seven year deal on an offer sheet. And, and then it was, so I think there was other, I don't even think I'd rather go back to Anaheim for eight or for four. I think there was two, I think there was two other teams. I think there was four teams maybe. And the argument and the discussion that, that that's come from this, I get all of it. And there's one side of ducks fans being like, well, what the fuck? The guy just completely screwed our organization. Like, even if we match it, it's like, buddy, what are you talking about now? Now I will say I do get, I get a portion, a portion of that where, you know, you see the deal. McDavid just took granted. It was two years, but he, he kind of took a bargain before that. If you want to be honest and what Crosby did all the years, I, there is an argument for it, but body, like you get offered fucking $90 million in which I think every year is salaries like 900 grand. So I would say that they're a top three destination if Zach Wierenski ends up getting traded. Now, now, the realistic. Why wouldn't you at least try to come close and then just jack up the term? So let's say Zito has made in that organization have made so many unbelievable decisions to get where they are. has a very unique release like I like he's able to really get like his shot off quick and it seems to trick goalies but I think that there's still a little bit left to be desired like I would not be shocked if he ended up on a team where he got a little bit of confidence where he ended up becoming exactly what they thought he was when he was drafted I you know like a 30 goal guy like like a 30 goal 60 point guy I could see him see him being an un like like if he's a third line center making four and a half five million bucks and he's getting regularized time and he can get you 22 to 25 goals I think that's an unbelievable job like he I don't think he I think through the process of like getting sent down having to play a little bit in the minors and developing and and kind of slowly coming up now and also when you're fifth overall sometimes you you can't really fly under the radar there's like a lot of pressure for you to develop I don't think it's necessarily like been there and he hasn't really been in the spotlight especially being in Phoenix and then now Utah I think that that he could be one of those guys that finally like you know at mid 20 range finds his game and he's In this case, with them having that much money and them having Celebrini and Smith and a few of those other younger guys cheap, at least for next year, those deals will be over before you know it. All of a sudden, let's say he's lined up with Darnell and or Trouba. That's a D pairing that's making fucking an average of four and a half to five million per guy. And it's also, you have a young D man that both of those guys will fight for him. They'll let him have his ice. They'll get him the puck. Let him do his thing. You need to have these guys around. better than us like they're so and it's it's just kind of bizarre to me i i think what i think the the u.s priority without athletics is so so much more focused on football basketball baseball hopefully more hockey but those those types of sports you know i mean it's not a fringe sport soccer's made huge strides i mean it was nothing when i was growing up but i think that's a huge factor just you know culture i know but it is one sport where like i don't i don't even know what it's like to be a soccer player i don't even know 50 years from now like we're in the mix of like a top five top eight countries probably because the professional leagues over here aren't like as desirable as to go play over in europe and then like what are the chances you can go and do that so i don't know yeah it's a great question but yeah it's just kind of it's because how many guys i did see landon donovan talking about and you know you could say this with hockey in a sense but not even close like he was on bald stool the youth system is completely broken where the youth system here is like it's just there's so much money in the coaches i think the coaching i'm guessing for 10 12 14 year olds in europe is so much better right and i think they go to academies when they're like 11 years old over there i think yeah yeah but they even have like sister academies in the u.s for those teams over there really yeah well think about think about think about the sport the four major sports like soccer reigns over all those in those country so you group all those kids that would have went and played and been distracted by those other four now they're going to this one but i still think our numbers of kids is is it's gonna be way more yeah oh so it's like it doesn't matter right if you look at the numbers they don't want it bad enough i don't think they want it bad enough that is i'll tell you i'll tell you i've i've you you want to make it in a sport so the kids who make it in the sports they just fucking want yes they have genes they have great coaching but in the end it is who wants it the most like think of every single sport dude you get kids and at 14 15 if you want it you're gonna go out there and do it yourself with all the time at home you have and then the kids who don't they usually don't make it i think i think you just mentioned the biggest fact genetics i think that's the biggest factor in somebody making it athletically i so uh we were i was talking to uh a buddy about this recently he was saying he was i honestly think it's genetics and how bad you want it like it yeah it's kind of like when it's all said and done it's like genetics and how bad does he want it right you have one or the other it's probably not enough i get them both yeah every day down the rink down the street for 10 hours a day for you know until i was two to 22. i'd still never play for the boston berlins you know what i mean like yeah it's you know you need that genetic uh luck as it were so so fish is saying it's a pay-to-play system in the u.s europe has professional clubs scout and fund youth development entirely okay that would make sense where yeah so so the kids don't even pay so any kid poor rich is getting the chance in europe i mean it's not an expensive sport you get cleats and you and you and your own knee pads or shouldn't pads excuse me and i mean there's got to be thousands of soccer players who probably grew up not even with a soccer ball or shoes that are kicking around a fucking little tennis ball like but yeah u.s they'll just never i mean
