The billboard was real. It was a real life billboard. And then somebody said, there's another one to with. There's another one on the other side of Buffalo. I swear to God, I think there's two, there might be two bill to billboards in Buffalo. I got occupying now. And just the fact that like they did that like bravo, bravo, just incredible, incredible trolling by them to a guy who deserves a true scumbag myself. And somebody who just doesn't know what he's talking about. And I've been hosting a podcast or, you know, I've been a part of this podcaster. Where are we coming up? 10 years. I mean, I've got a couple things right. But I'm battenites. I'm batten, but beneath them and those align, I think. I mean, it's like under 200, you know, you're in double A if I'm a major league baseball player. And the way they went about this was just so perfect. I don't know what it cost to rent. The biggest thing that I took from the clip was the poor fans of Buffalo. You wanted it for them. They're ready to go. They're, and they're, and they're laughing at people like me who doubted them this year. Once again, I'll say that was not a preseason prediction either. We were in December when I said that a magical run that we've been over. Now we'll get into the series in a little bit. We got some other things to get to. Since, but it showed up Buffalo. So since that point, they've only lost nine times in regularly. It is like 39, nine and nine. Is that what I saw? Yeah, there's something right around there and remarkable. And yeah, just an incredible run. Now, I think it's going to be a hell of a first round, but we're going to get into the East First Round series. What I want to bring up next, when I talked about Buffalo and the Sabers and saying these poor fans, like I meant it is from the bottom of my heart, these poor fans. There's two other fan bases, just these poor, poor fans. They don't deserve this. One is Detroit. We went over Detroit last episode. And for you Detroit fans, we're dropping Joey Coaster today. These fans, they They've had one playoff series win one in all these years and every year we say the buildings rocking, they're buying merch, they're cheering on their team, they're shooting the cannon, they're selling out season tickets and they got nothing to show for it. And every single year, it's next year, it's next year, they finished the season strong, they got a bunch of young guys coming, it's next year and then the next year comes and they think again. Well Rick bonus guys, Rick bonus went off, Rick bonus lost his mind, I think I went around there to billboard and oh, oh, oh, are you kidding me? I'll take that, I'll take 100 billboards over, I'll take a coach, Michelle Terrien after he heard this wrath problem, he was like, oh, my God, that's kind of harsh. You've been a part of a lot of games and a lot of seasons, have you ever been a part of something that's as frustrating as this has been to the stretch? No, you know, you know, I got to look at the statute, three hits, 23 giveaways, like I don't know if I'm back, but if I'm back, I'm changing this culture. These guys, they don't care, losing is not important enough to them, it doesn't bother them, like how can you go out and play like that, should have done this about a month ago, but this is why we are, where we are, this is why we're out of the playoffs, that kind of effort, losing it, you have to hate losing, I don't care if it's a meaningless game, I don't care, show up and compete, three hits, 23 giveaways, what else you want to know? You've reached them for so long after you got here, how did it stop, where did it stop? Because it got tough, because it got hard, like we talked about after the Olympic break, it's going to get harder, so everything is good as long as it's going their way, and now it gets tough, we don't want to battle back, and that's why, what that's what's happened over the last little week, a couple of weeks, that's all that's happened, we're going to change that, if I'm back, I don't know if I'm back, because I'm not going to talk, we'll get to that, but man, oh man, some of those guys are so lucky, the season's over, and there's no practice tomorrow, it anyways, there's no more games, what else you want to know? I think even in the long history of this franchise, I don't think they've ever lost six games in a row to end a season at home, no, is that worse? It's terrible, inexcusable, if they're not embarrassed by, not only tonight, by that, they're on the wrong team, they are, they got to be embarrassed with that, anything else? Yep. I'm like a guy that wants to be back, do you want to be back, if you scratch the itch, where are you? Alright, we scratch the itch, I'm going to talk to Doc, as we said from there, right, but I'm just, and the players were told tonight, if I'm back, we're changing this freaking culture. I mean, tell us how you really feel, that gives me anxiety, just, hey, close. Training camp next year. Boys, now this, this broke, and as you just heard, he says, I don't know if I'm back, I don't know if I'll be back 16 times, he said that he's back, he's back, because today, Elliot Friedman Friedgebaum announced that he has signed a one year deal and, and with that comes a culture change. Now, business, I'm going to throw it to you first, give me a reaction and what you thought as you listen to that. I don't know if it's after the game of the next morning, you heard it. Oh, I thought they were replaying the one he did with Winnipeg, so that I'm glad you brought that. Yeah. So we've seen this, this type of rant before from bones, and I didn't know him much personally before he joined the desk at TNT, but one of the best guys, one of the best guys ever, and very, very passionate about hockey, like even when he was watching games, much like Rick talk it, when mistakes or things were happening that he wasn't happy with, he'd get pissed. And all of a sudden, you see his emotion get into it, and you're like, okay, wow, like that's the, that's the coach and the fiery, the fieryness that you need in order to be a head coach in the national hockey, you need to show up every day, and you need to pour your heart and soul into it. And it's, and it's grudin' with football, it's just the love of the game, it's playing it the right way. Love of the game and being in the fire, being in the mix with the boys, competing day and day out, and he, I think he's used the line before. He says not enough of these guys hate losing enough, more than they enjoy winning. And that's the, I was, and you know, it kind of made me think like I hadn't heard as much as when he said it when we were at TNT, but also him dropping it at the press conference. So it's kind of hard though, so let's take a step back. He took over and it was a complete real culture change from the beginning, because they turned things around. They started winning. They had this incredible push, all their defensive analytics and numbers come completely flipped upside down. They weren't protecting the house well enough. Guys were getting way too easy to the goal tenor in the crease area where that changed. Obviously, they got the mojo. I think he got a career here at a Charlie coil. You saw what Zach Rensky was doing. Well, he's kind of doing it already, but especially even more amplified when bones took over. So I guess, I guess I was shocked considering they traded for Marchment and then also Garland later on, like closer at the deadline, to see them fizzle out the way they did. I believe they were two eight and one in their last 11 games. I think of 500, their last 11, or maybe even five and six, I think they're in. Right. It wasn't like they had to go on another 10 and one run. No, and what you saw before those last 11 games, you were like, oh my god. I think that, like, maybe from the outside looking in, I was like, I'd like to see Philly and their numbers from a TV perspective rather than Columbus. But if it is Columbus, well deserved happy for bones, happy for that organization and fan base. And then to see them just fizzle out the way they did, I was honestly kind of shocked. And I think the one thing I took away from the press conference, too, is that when he's basically like, maybe I should have done this sooner. Maybe he should have dropped the Ace of Spades sooner and called the locker room and all the boys out to try to light a spark on him. So like you mentioned, so they maybe could have went five and six and then snuck going to play off. So in one breath, I'm like, man, they work so hard to put themselves in that position and worked hard for him to do that. But then like to let it happen and drop the ball like that, I can understand his frustration, but I wasn't in that locker room. I didn't see the way that they dropped the ball and fumble it. So he has all thrown it over to you. Like, what did you make of everything that with bones said? Yeah. Like I said earlier, I love bones. I think he's a great guy. I think he's a great coach, great analyst when he does TNT. I think that's one of those conversations when a coach and a team has something going on, that needs to stay in the locker room. That's not something you bring to the press. That's not something you're using for clicks. And it's the last game of the year. We used to call those game the PA games, the no hitters. You're going out there. Both teams are out of the playoffs. He's complaining that there's only three hits 21 give away that's tough to watch. But I think that's a conversation that a coach should be having with his players in the locker room or in their year end meetings. The season's over. Why do it in front of the media where guys like us now we're going to be talking about it. You're putting yourself in a vulnerable spot as a coach, but it did get him an extension. So I wonder if it did get him the extension. Now I'm not trying to play middleman here, but let me give both sides. The former player side. I was like, that's fucking bullshit. And I was imagining the locker room and guys having beers after you know, last year in the year, everyone's getting together like mother fucking him and saying and the you brought up Winnipeg and he's done it before in Winnipeg and it's like, fuck this guy. Well, so I didn't fight to get them back for him to get them back in it. Like, what? Sorry. They fought for themselves, but it's not like they didn't put their best effort forward for what 90 to 95% of the time he took over. Right. And that's what I think I think part of it was that and I think later on he said, or was it guys who said like, we don't necessarily think we don't hate to lose. We just got to like learn how to win these games and there's a big difference, right? But the like to go out and say that, that is straight up calling out the character. And now if he went out and I don't know if at the beginning did he say, um, this team doesn't hate to lose enough or did he say some player? Guys in here, because if you're saying this team, it's like, fuck you. But if you're saying, hey, it's some guys in there that actually switches it up where the guys who are ultra competitive hate to lose and are doing what needs to be done to get it in the playoffs, they are probably agreeing with him. If he's saying some guys, then it's like, yeah, there are some guys in here that just don't get it. He said these guys. These guys don't. Okay. So that's all right. Everyone. That's everyone. You, I'm, I'm sitting there thinking of like Zach Oranski like, buddy, fuck off. Like like at least personally, he did, he did say something back where he did, he did. He did. But now I'll say this too. Clements Blue Jacket player thoughts on Rick bonus from the past few days. Damon Severson. He's the best coach I've personally ever had. Matthew Olivier. I just love the past and passion and energy that he brings every day, the communication with everyone. So what were they saying in the steam room? In the steam room, they were, they were probably like, like, I want to fight this guy. And I get that. Now here's the other side of it, playing middleman. I think the fans probably love the fans are like, they're with them. Like this is bullshit. Like every single year. it's the same thing. Every single year we have promised and then we don't start well and then we go on a little bit of a run late and maybe we get in, you know, we've won around once. Usually we don't get in and it's just the same thing over and over and over and this guy is finally now calling out people publicly in terms of like they don't want it enough. It 100% needed to be said, but my only thing is you say that to the God. You don't need to say it in the media, but 100% agree with you that it probably needed to be said. And I do want to wonder that's what the he I even said at the end of his rant. He's like, I probably should have said this sooner. So that was him not saying it in the locker room to the guys when he should have probably like of those last 11 games, maybe game five or six. And then all of a sudden, like this, you know, the tea pot and then boom, you see a game where there nobody's hitting. There's 21 turnovers and then pop goes the weasel and it I think it was just overall bad timing. I agree with you guys. If you're the guys in the locker room, you're like, what the fuck? But he's going to be their coach next year and they better fucking bring it in training camp and be ready right from this front puck drop because to be fair before he got there, they put themselves in that situation as to why their last coach had to be fired and why they had to go on a magical run to even put themselves in the conversation is his year in meeting with Werenzky. Who else did they have? He'll apologize. He's going to say it wasn't talking about you. It wasn't talking to you. That fucking mask. And if you just heard, if you just heard the audio clip, we played, you could also watch it. The other aspect is like it's right up to the game. Apparently, he was smashing a stick in the hallway before it. Like there was noise of somebody smashing a stick. I imagine it was him. He was crying. He was legitimately. He was holding back tears. So part of it, if you ask him now, he could be like, yeah, I might, it might be hard. I might leave that a little bit. I was so emotional and and that's that's kind of the difference is like, this guy cares so much. And he's looking at it. Like this is the last game of the year, like in front of our a solo crowd and fans who care that are paying big money. And the players like, we kind of battled. We came up short and then this game didn't mean anything. So there's a huge disconnect there. And I think part of it is he's like, there can't be like, it shouldn't matter that you're out of the playoffs. Like, fuck that. Like you need to play every single game. Like it's your last. It's like cliche. But like a lot of these teams in the playoffs, like that's how they go about doing it. So it was just, it was, I mean, it was electric. I'll say that. I didn't think I didn't think he was going to be back. I didn't because I was like, God, like, how do you come back after this? No granted you to still have exit meetings and a lot, but it would just be like, it's going to be some awkwardness there. I mean, the way you say, I'm changing this fucking culture. Like, it's going to be a different training camp next year. I didn't think he'd be back. But then at the same time, it's like, is that just letting the players off the hook if they don't bring them back? So they made up their mind that it's another year of bones. And at this point, you got to expect next year in camp, it's just going to be a, it's going to be a different vibe. No more Mr. Nice bones running around. And I think for him too, is he's putting himself out there saying he's going to change the culture. So next year is on him. Yeah. Pressures on him gets on him. And I respect him for doing that and taking on us on something's got to change. I'm going to be the one who does it. And if they don't, it's going to be on him. If they do, he's going to be a fucking legend there. Yeah. And I think, uh, look, when you got your, your head coach who just came out of retirement, the guy was like, he had a boat subscription down in, in, in, in Florida, like, in Bokehub. Yeah. Yeah. He's, you know, he's chilling and all of a sudden, he comes out of retirement to help turn your team around. And he's showing more emotion after your, after missing out of playoffs and then majority of the team, I think that that, that is kind of, it's kind of a bad look on the guy. So hopefully the ones who weren't bringing it, um, take a look in the mirror and realize you're in the national hockey league and you're getting paid to play hockey. And, and hopefully they kind of bring that effort that he wasn't seeing. But I didn't, I'll be honest. I didn't watch them closely enough over the last 11 games to know like which guy to point the finger. But, um, you know, I, I would imagine like, well, Rensky, man, he had a fucking huge year. Wasn't putting up the numbers towards the end. But I mean, how much, how much he ran out of getting, like how much that team for, yeah, that's why I think he deserves the Norris because you see when he wasn't producing, getting everything the team went to shit. Like he straight up carried his team better than anybody else in the league. And that's why when it's like these guys and he's probably getting that quote or hearing or seeing that video. He's like, I just fucking emptied the tank for this organization another year and, and try to help carry this team into playoffs. And, and I'm getting grouped in with this. Uh, I don't think that's fair. So interesting times in Columbus, but very excited. The fact that they have bones back and what they can do with it moving forward. And, and going back to what we said, like we're, we're kind of playing both sides of it. But I would assume that after he was done his rant, there were some regrets in the way that he handled it, but you can't fault the guy for showing that type of emotion because he cares. And once again, that's a guy who came out of retirement showing that emotion who's, uh, well, how old is he now? 71 71 years old. He's about to have a jammer in the fucking hallway. No, it's like crying. Like, uh, you know, I mean, the guy was in the verge of tears. Yeah. And, and it was after the game that didn't mean anything. And I bet you as far as what he brings to the table, he's probably the lowest paid coach the National Hockey League. And obviously that makes a lot of sense for Columbus as well, where you're going to get a guy pouring his heart and soul. I bet you, I, I'd be shocked if he's making more in two million bucks. And the going rate for a good coach nowadays in the National Hockey League is, is probably four to four and a half million average. And what do you think, uh, what do you think? The board. I think I heard he made north of five. Yeah. I mean, oh, I would, I would think, look, it's like the talk deal now. I think you know, he's five times, he was five times five. Yeah. So I think I think four, four to six million is, is the going rate. Do you think if, if it was any other coach that we didn't like and respect as much as we do with bonds that we would have a completely different tune on this? Um, I think him being around as long as he has is, is adding to the fact that you got a lot of respect for him. I also think him being around this long though is like, the game has changed a lot. We've talked about it over and over and over about like, these young guys, some of these kids, like they can't handle the heat. Like, I'm not trying to say, I'm not trying to be like, uh, boom or wit here, but like, it doesn't work the way it worked on us. And, and guys, they signed these huge tickets after playing a year and a half. Some of these college guys, you, you, you, you have a good entry level deal. You sign an eight, seven year deal, eight million a year. And you're just in way more control than we were. And I think bones, most of his career in coaching, whether it was as an assistant, when you can be nice and friendly or a head coach, he was coaching the 90s dude. He's been, so it's like, he might not really like grasp yet. Like, it, it, it doesn't really work the same way breaking news here. So Pasha just posted this in the, so Aaron ports, a port's line, uh, if bonus regrets this comment. So this is from bonus. Okay. He says, no pause. Did I push the bar a little bit? Yeah. And I know that, but that's me. I've got to live with myself. I'm not going to walk out here and say, Oh, God, I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't have done this. Did I push it? Yeah, I pushed the envelope a little bit, but that's who I am, man. I am not going to come in. Here's that's the grudin. I'm not going to come in here in BSU people, right? I can tell you what I see and what I don't like. And was that a little over the top? Probably, I'll be the first to admit. So we did. So, no, I don't regret it. It was over the top. Fuck. Yeah. Yeah. I'm running a money boots on your couch, bitch. Um, so another thing to do though is, is he had a similar rant and Winnipeg we talked about. And when we had Winnipeg in the St. Louis series on the broadcast, bones was in the chair and they're captain. They he even fucking almost cried. I know. And bones was asked in the question. So regardless of how animated and how passionate he gets, it seems like his former player still love him regardless of his rant. So or at least the ones that matter. The guy is like Adam Lowry and the guys like the were Rensky. So I'd be interested to be, I would love to be a fly on the wall in the room with Rensky and bonus in the exit meeting. Like, I'm sure that they'll probably have a conversation about the guys he was actually talking about. And I feel like the hockey way is like the reason he grouped in everybody is you try not to single guys out, right? It's a team team mentality. And that's the way it is. But you can single guys out behind closed doors. That's my whole thing. It's like, talk to these guys. Tell them, Hey, you don't fucking have it. You're not a playoff player. You don't want it. You got to need to do it in the media. Yeah. No, I'm saying more of the reason that when he was given the rant that he said these guys. Yeah. Is he didn't want to single guys out via media where I'm sure he's not going to have a problem talking to Adele and saying this fucking guy. Yeah. So pack and he's a fucking. Yeah. Well, no one who they drink. Oh, yeah. I think you sit with Rensky. I think we're Dell and bones. It's with Rensky. And I know some people hate the fact when you bring players in to make decisions and you say, Zach, who are guys that we cannot win with? And listen, some players may not want to be a part of that, but I'm guessing we're in skis career where he's at. Like he's probably sick and tired of this too. Not probably. Yeah. I didn't get one more year to figure it out. And if not, we're in skis going over to Detroit. Yeah. So that's even more. That's even more of a reason for them to bring him in and say exactly who are guys that we're not getting it done with here. Here's a problem. He's like me. I won't out. Like what St. Louis has introduced is that small area game in the offense of zone and how they're able to beat a lot of the pressure and still generate offense. So that's the key is is I think that Boston will have the ability to try to suck them into like the mud and make it physical. A lot of fights and a lot of distractions where Buffalo yeah, there's going to be times where you have to push back and and you're going to have to answer the bell. But it's about being disciplined, making sure you're taking the power plays and you're not getting sucked into the bullshit too much. That has to be an element to it. I think that the the back end and that mobility will play a factor in how they cycle in the offensive zone. They get those five man cycles and can create a lot of problems defensively for Boston because they are the slower team. The one key though also for Buffalo Boston all season long with storm system through the neutral zone is they force you to dump it. They force you to play that boring game. And sometimes Buffalo they want to play that run and gun snap it around. Oh look at us free zone entries. Yeah, yeah, when if you're if you're not being given the line and you have to dump it, don't force plays don't play in the Boston system where they're going to create those turnovers. They're going to go back the other way and make you pay. You're going to have to dump it in. You're going to have to go fucking chase it down and play physical and get it back and you can't cheat the game in that regard. So if they don't get sucked in and and and and kind of lose what they have to have for as far as the mentality when it comes to playing as a team like Boston, I think that they're going to be in good shape. And there's very few guys in playoffs right now that command the front of the net in the offensive zone like a Brady could chuck there's maybe like five guys size wise, just like screen, like tipping pucks, second opportunities like what he could do to keep plays alive below the goal line in the offensive zone. So that is a big time question mark for me for Ottawa as far as how healthy is it is he and how quickly can they move up and down the ice because we know that Carolina can move. They can play with pace. They come at you four lines and they keep that pace throughout a full 60 minutes. So that is a big, big X factor going into this year. Okay. Um, and not having maybe the toughness up front, but I think that the speed and the pace in which they play up front is going to cause fits for that back. Can I give you a little stat in term that might I just want to hear your opinion on? Sure. Utah is one of the worst teams in the league at getting the puck back when they dump it in. Oh, really? Well, I'm not going to be able to, I don't think they're going to be able to enter the zone. It's all playoffs team. Uh, I don't know, man. I, I, they got some guys who can move the puck in the back end. Circuit Chebs, one of the best offensive defensemen in the league this year. There's a reason they went and got weaker. I think that they got some, they want to play with the puck. And that's, that's evident, especially those top two lines. You got done through, uh, lethal sniper, 40 goals, uh, uh, uh, uh, coolie who can, we know he can move up and down the ice, the, the offensive chemistry between, uh, schmaltcy and, and Kels as well, uh, uh, Barrett, Hayton, not to also be overlooked. Like, I, I think that there's a lot of speed there, loss and crowd speed and size. That McBane guy's a piece of shit to play against. He's also a big mother fucker. I think they got guys in this lineup that are going to surprise a lot of people. And there's, I don't think Utah games are, are, are, are one of which a lot of hockey fans watch and they're fun and they're fun to watch. And I think they're going to surprise a lot of people and listen, Vegas, they look like a completely different team over the last few weeks with torts. They look faster. Like you said, it looks like they're on the juice. Uh, but I, I just, well, that's what you said. You said he looks like they've been all been taken steroids. I think that was on pardon my take. He's a legend, a tough, tough bastard, Joey Coaster. Thanks for joining the show. Hey, thanks for having me guys. Oh, we appreciate it, man. We appreciate it. We were just talking before we started recording. We wanted to save it. You just saw Bizz. I think it's nice to start off with with your relationship with Kelly Chase. How much he means to you and you guys getting together for the puck cancer event the other night in St. Louis. Yeah, Chaser. I'd consider one of my dearest friends. We grew up together. We played hockey together. We played softball together. We go back in the summer and work at Barry Malarose's hockey school. He's just such a great person. He's great to everybody and for him to be battling like he is. It's really unfortunate, but if somebody can battle through it, that's the type of guy that could do that. We did the East Guardian podcast with him on Saturday. He said if he ever got in a brawl like in a back alley, he was named, I think he named him about four or five guys. It was you, Brandon Shanahan. I think Wendell Clark was in there and of course Tony Twist and I think he said like one or two other names. So that's a fun crew. That's a, I would not want to run into that crew. I would love to have Chaser in my corner at all times. So were you guys from the same town, like same town or same area of Saskatchewan? Like are you talking from like eight, nine years old? Yeah. Chaser is from Porcupine Plain and I'm from Calvington where Wendell's from. He's only about 25 miles away. So we ran into each other a lot. We probably didn't become friends more until junior hockey and pro hockey though. That's when we got to see each other every summer. And I noticed that I think that your second year with the Saskatoon blades was Wendell's rookie year in junior. So what about him? Did you know him growing up as well or was that the first encounter you had with Wendell? No, Wendell's from Calvington. So Wendell, Wendell's oldest brother Donnie was the best man in my wedding. They lived two miles from our farm. So we grew up. Wendell did leave to go to Wilcox, Notre Dame for a few years. So I didn't see him those times, but I played with his older brother, Donnie on all the way up through minor hockey. Awesome. So you grew up on a farm. Okay. So we've had a couple guys on the show and it seems that the overall message is just learning responsibility and accountability and what was it like for you? Your daily chores or what you had to get done on the farm and how your dad and your mom probably like really taught you a lot about what it takes to be successful in that part of life. Well, there's no question. My dad was, he was a tough old bastard and he pushed his pretty hard. So there was no, there's no staffing around whatever he said went. We had no choice to do it, but he had it done. And if there was more to do, he would send us back out in the field to do more. It's almost like every guy that grew up on a farm is said, you know what, it's much easier to play in the NHL even as a fighter. It's easier to play in the NHL to be on the farm work in every day, waking up before the sunrise and going to bed late too. Yeah. So you know what, I really enjoyed the farm when I was when I was younger. I'd like to go back and do do it again, but NHL was was my life and was a lot of fun. And I just I got so much out of it and so much so many more more friends, new people to meet my wife, my kids, it all came from playing in NHL. I was just going to go back just to the to the toughness. Like all you guys can fucking throw with the best of them. Like what age was just going down like, baby, were you guys a little bored on these farms on the weekends, were you guys would just go like toe to toe with the back of the bar like, how does this happen, were all these guys from SASC or just nail guns? I think it's just the way we were brought up. Our parents would wake us up in the morning. They take us out to the field and leave us in the field all day to pick stones. As for the fighting part, I didn't even have a fight until junior hockey. And my coach was a gentleman named Jerry James. Jerry's well known as the only, I think the only person ever to play in the great cup in the Stanley Cup finals in the same year. He was a legend. Yes. And he he was tough as nails. And he convinced me that I needed to do something better than most to move up in this league and and fighting seemed to be the way to go. What position did he play in football? I think he was a a full back and maybe a defensive halfbacker. So I don't know. He was just like, he was on the kid line in Toronto. I do know that. And that would have been maybe in the 60s, I guess. So he was a how much older than you was he? Like how old was he? Well, I think Jerry passed away this last year. And I think he was in his early to mid 90s. So was he helping also like train you guys? Like was this guy just an absolute freak off the ice? No, he was just he was our coach. He pushed us. He actually on that one team. We had Dave Brown as well. So we weren't we were pretty pretty tough team there. But like I said, Jerry was the coach that molded me into the player that I am today. And he was a great man and a great athlete and a great person. So when you first started fighting, did you enjoy it? Or was it kind of one of those things? I got my coaches kind of telling me to do this. I'll do it to appease him. Or did you love it right away? I think I was successful the first few fights. So I liked it. I never never bothered me to get hit. So as long as I hit them harder than they hit me, I was always happy. Somebody was telling me the other day with that like he would punch for the the back of the guy's head when he had to go through it. You would throw punches like that was your main goal. Did he also explain to you to do that as well? Well, I tried to hit the back of the head, but that was going through the front to get there. Right. That's what I mean. Yeah. Thanks for clarifying that. How far how far was Kelvington from Saskatoon? So when you went off to play junior, like, what was that travel? Like, were you able to live at home or is that a decent ways away? Yeah. When I when I was 15, I left to play in New York and first, and that's that's tier two or tier one junior junior eight tier two. Sorry. And that was about an hour and a half away. And then Saskatoon was two and a half hours away. So when I left home, we had to stay stay in the cities we were at. So you talk about, uh, Wendell being from your town and getting to no chase or Saskatchewan guy. But with the Wings battle and the Leafs and the Blues, like, how many times did you end up fighting those guys in the NHL? Because I always find that crazy, like, good friends, and it happens a lot, or at least back when you played, but it's still got to be a little awkward just trying to punch your fricking fist through his head. And then in the summer, be like, Hey, buddy, let's go have a beer. He would only aim for the middle of it though. He wouldn't go all the way to the back. It's my, well, honestly, uh, I didn't fight Jason or Wendell. I, uh, okay. I always felt that I was maybe their bigger brother, and I didn't want to be that guy to do it. But in the same sense, I fought probably a couple times. And, but he was six foot five. And I, he could handle himself. So, uh, now Wendell and Chaser were just too close to family for me to, to go after. But no Tommy sticks, all right? Like you weren't like taping the shin pads. It was all business when the puck drop. Like, would you guys ever be joking around on the ace together? No, it was, it was business. Uh, we knew what our jobs were and we weren't, and we knew the coaches and everyone were watching. We weren't, uh, we were going to screw around that way. I'll see you in the hallway after. Exactly. Were you part of that? Were you part of that legendary softball team? Uh, I was part of that team. That was an amazing team we had led by Barry Melrose. Okay. Barry Wendell, Kaminsky. Have you spoken to Barry at all, at all because that's a guy who, who meant a lot, not only when he went to LA and the coaching he did, but then on TV and the stage and it's been, it's been tough. You know, he had to kind of retire out of the TV with what's going on. And it seems like talking to the Saskatchewan guys. He means a lot to everyone there, the guys who kind of came after him. He did. He paved the way for us. He was the first while there was one gentleman earlier, much older than us and made the NHL from Calvington. Uh, but Barry was our, our guy. We played softball with him in the summer. We all came and worked at his hockey school and, uh, he was, we looked up to him. We'd, uh, we'd be driving to town and he'd be out running the highway getting ready for training, Kam. So he was a great, is a great role model to us. Um, I'm looking at these, uh, junior numbers, two 69 games in your last year. You had 40 goals, 41 assists and 258 penalty minutes. So, obviously, at that level, like, you were highly skilled, probably getting power play time. And, and as you turned to pro, like, the offensive numbers other than one year weren't really there. So, like, was it hard for you to kind of just adapt to that bottom six role? All of a sudden, and like, that was kind of it for your, for majority of your NHL career. Yeah. No, it wasn't hard for me. Uh, I knew my role. I knew my place in the team. I knew what I was supposed to be doing out there. If I, if I got a goal or two, it was always exciting. But, uh, I accepted what I had to do. And I, I did my best to learn that role. And then I had some great coaches along the way that, uh, that helped me become a better hockey player and enabling me to get those Stanley cups and have a bigger role on the ice. Stevie, why was young there too? Was it kind of one of those things when you came in? The coaches and GM said, Hey, that guy right there, number 19 look out for him. Well, I looked out for him every game I ever played. So, yeah, that was a good draft that year. They drafted Stevie, myself, Bob Probert, Peter Klima, Lane Lambert, Stu Grimson. There's a, a mismatch there. Have some pretty good players and some pretty tough guys as well. But you got to play with Tiger Williams in Detroit for a year, huh? He was there. I don't think he played all year, but I got to play with Tiger Williams. I got to, uh, learn from a guy named John Winstank who was, yeah, really tough big guy. So, uh, I had some good mentors. I'm growing up. Yeah, I'm looking because it's weird. Like you, I think for me, I think of the wings and everything came together mid 90s. But when you got there in 85, 86, I didn't realize you made the playoffs for a little bit. And then it was like early 90s. The struggles came and what did you see kind of change over time? I know people have talked about Iserman became more of a defensive player. Like, well, maybe sacrifice at some points, but that whole change from what happened, not just the new players coming in. How did like the culture change? Was it all Scotty Bowman and, and Iserman changing his game a little bit? Yeah. So we, uh, we were really bad in the mid 80s. Uh, then we got a couple years Jacques Demarre command and Stevie started to, uh, we can't captain. We had two good playoff runs where we lost to the Edmonton Oilers, both years in the conference finals and nobody was beating those guys anyway. So then, uh, I think it was also the drafting. I mean, then, uh, Surge comes in, Nick Lidstrom comes in. They made some very good draft picks and it started to turn around in about 92. But at that point, I was in New York at the time. I was lucky enough to come back in 96 though. How was the, how are the crowds in the atmosphere inside the Joe, um, during those years? Like, I got to see it like we talked about on TV as I started winning the cops and being good. And even got the tail end of it, uh, before it closed. So what was it rocking? Well, when I first came into the league, it was not rocking. Uh, the team wasn't very good. I think we had 17 wins in one year. Mr. Illich and the Illich family were given away a car at every game just to try and get people in the seats. And then, uh, I guess it was probably 87 when we made the playoffs for two years and it was, it was bad limb there. It was, we had to play. I think we probably played the Leafs one year. We did, we beat them in seven. And we, we actually won four playoffs series those two years. And there was a lot of excitement. I mean, that, that Joe Lewis arena was the best that I played in in that era. As a visiting guy, the Chicago stadium was, that was, that was the best place for a visiting guy to ever go. Those stairs going up to the rank like those made the best videos back in the day. Especially fallen down him. Too many post game pops. Were you guys having beers in the locker room after like all, all the guys? Oh, yeah, back then. Yeah. In the locker room on the bus on the flight. Yeah, it's good old school hockey. I'm sure you guys did too. How many smokers? Uh, there was some. Probe was a smoker. Uh, Harold Snips, Tim Higgins. Yeah, you'd go back in the stick room between periods to tape a stick or cut one off and you're walking into a plume smoke. Nice of them to at least do it in the stick room, though. Some of them, there was more guys hacking darts. They were just doing it in the room. No, yeah, I thought it was always a room. Buddy, back of the day, well, Joe, is that true? Not in, not on any of the teams I played in. They had to go back in the stick room, but it still didn't matter. You can smell it everywhere anyway. Okay. You end up getting, I looked to hear how you ended up in New York because I don't know how that went down, but once you tell us that, I'd also love to know you must have kind of been shocked. You get the cup in New York 93 94, that legendary run that I want to talk about, but Detroit couldn't get over the hump either. You actually went back and then then the cups came. There had to be some party you shocked that that they still couldn't get it done because of how good those teams were when you weren't there. Yeah, they were, they were good teams. They just ran into some, I guess better, better teams and maybe a little luck here at the time, but I got traded. I guess it was a trading deadline in 91. I didn't expect to be traded. Detroit was my home. I loved it, but you know what, New York, they wanted me there. Neil Smith was a general manager who was with me and Detroit. Colin Campbell was one of the coaches who was with me and Detroit. So I at least had a couple people there that the new me and knew what they were getting when I got there looking at that roster. I mean, you got to see Messier, like the one of the most legendary playoff runs of all time. Ty Dome was there as well. So it wasn't just like a skilled team. There was a lot of toughness with those Rangers teams, huh? There was. There was. When Neil took over there, he started really making a lot of changes. I bet in the five years I was there, they might have made 50 trades. Even the, even the year we won the cup in 93 94, we were first in the power play, first in the penalty killing. Number one overall and on the trade deadline day, I think he made five moves. So he, they didn't sit down. They, uh, we got, uh, Nune and the Mato that day, we got, uh, McTavish that day. Uh, there was a, uh, who else we traded Tony and Monti. We traded. Oh, Glen Anderson. We got that day. So he was very active and he was trying to break the curse and we were lucky enough to do that in the arc. Was Mike Gartner, the, the most shocking one that left, right? Because of his speed and how good he was and all of a sudden he's not there either. Yeah, you know what? Uh, I think you guys all know Mike Keenan. Mike Keenan's got his own way of, of doing things his own way, thinking and if, if you're not his style of player and you know what his style is, he, uh, he doesn't want to have you. So we, we got Glen Anderson from Mike Gartner and, and then the, the big one though was Tony and Monti, who was a young superstar and we got a couple journeyman and I called him that in respect. Mato and Nune and they were so legendary for us to win that Stanley Cup two. So they knew what they were doing. Uh, and it worked out for us well. Yeah, Mato scored that big goal, right? And then Brian Nune and Mayor may not have got the other goal that Messier Gartner, who knows? Let's talk about this. Let's everyone think. I don't know. We defied. Hey, we got the goals all it mattered. Yeah, that's all about it's very nobody was going to argue. No, were you there for that time when it was Keenan right that kept Kovalev on the ice and Kovalev thought he was doing the right thing and he just kept leaving him on the ice. He had like a five minute shift. Yeah, it was it was like seven and a half minutes. He kept coming to the bench and Teenan would tell him to go back out there and then the players got on. So we started doing it too. And he finished the game from both the 13 minute mark on and I think the first three or four minutes, he thought he was he deserved it. Then he realized that yeah, this is this is a punishment. This isn't what it's supposed to be. Joe, when Whit was entering you, he said video coach for the wings. Like was that just a title? Were you actually watching a ton of film? I was watching a ton of film. I had a computer to break it down whenever the coach was command I'd have to do a power play setup or a penalty killing setup. And and I'm not great electronically. So I don't know how the hell I got through that. But I learned a lot. It was a lot of fun doing that is you you get to see the mistakes are also the good plays and you can it helps to be to go on the bench after that, which was great for me. I was just going to say like the video coaches, when remember when it wouldn't play in like the panic and everyone started giving it to them. But with a guy like Joey, no one's going to be giving it to him. So you're not a lot of help him, we can help you with that. I don't know. I saw the clip of torts the other day in New York and the light burns out. Yeah. And the ease like this is fucking bad, but we can't have this happen right now. Joey would have stood up. What are you going to do about it? Yeah. Yeah. Don't. But the reason I ask is, um, I noticed your first couple of years in New York, you had Roger Nielsen, and if I'm not mistaken, he was one of the first guys to start using video and how to break down stuff for the players in the locker room. Did you kind of like take that from him? No, like, honestly, I don't know how I took it. I, uh, I wanted to stay when I retired to stay with the team and Kenny Holland gave me that opportunity, but with with Roger. We had a little bit of video, but it was still so so new. I mean, you were going from VHS to VHS. By the time I was doing it, it was digital. So it was much easier for us to figure out. Plus I had people helping me too. I wasn't doing this on my own. I worked with Barry Smith and Dave Lewis on all the video we did. But that was a pretty cool with that, you know, having Roger Nielsen as a coach and like, what was it like, um, you know, getting coached by him? He was good. He was a really good coach, real smart coach, uh, detail oriented, uh, detail oriented. And, uh, I don't, I just, he was there and we were successful, but, uh, I don't know if him and mess had a little bit of a falling out because when mess came, I think Roger, that was probably the end of Roger. Oh, and for a guy like you and somebody who played the way you did, it seems that there's not a ton of like headbutting with coaches because they respect so much of how you're going out and doing your job, but Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan are guys that would get into it. I think a little bit with players for you. Did you ever have any maybe fuck you matches or anything like that with those guys. Well, with Keenan for sure. Keenan, uh, Keenan called me into his office one day to vent because he knew if he vented to me that I'd stand up to him and I'd go back to the locker room and, and let the boys know, but, uh, it got to the point where he got up and walked out of his office and I was there sitting by myself because he didn't want to listen to me anymore and, but, uh, uh, for, uh, Scotty, no, Scotty was, Scotty was like that. Scotty kept you on your toes. He was never really a yellow, but you never knew if he was going to say good morning to you or walk by and not stay a word. He just kept you on edge all the time. And to me, he was the best coach that I ever had. I absolutely love him and can't thank him enough for all the opportunities he gave me. When you talk about the thing with Keenan, like, what was it about like your play or like, because I'm just curious what he was actually picking on you for even though you'd give it right back to him. Well, he pulled the whole team off practice one day and I think this was in the playoffs and basically said, our teams, the piece of shit, we're not working hard enough and I was lazy out there and I wasn't doing the drills right. And I just started giving me f bombs right back and he got up and walked out. I'm sitting there with the two assistant coaches and Colin Campbell was one of them. He looked at me, says, do you think you want. I'm like, I'm the only one here. Yeah, I beat him. He's gone. It's my office now. I go into lock group and I've got to talk to boys and let them know what what Mike was dancing. Now that fires them up. And that's just the way you did it. And it works. I think it's pretty cool when we've talked to the the Rangers on that team, how the madness after it because you were you were up three one right then Vancouver one, two of the games and then Keenan made the decision or maybe mess to go up was it like upstate New York. You guys went and spent a couple days instead of being in the city was was that not what you did before game seven or am I misremembering that? I don't I don't remember that. I don't think so. We were actually opposite. He was like, fuck dad. He's like, this is our house. This is the opposite. Yeah. Yeah, we were we were up three one going home. The parade route was already set. Everyone knew what was going on and we start to game out. Oh shit, we're down three nothing right away. And then we tied it up three three and then they won they got three and the third to go up six three and I think we go to Vancouver and get blown out the next game. So it was it was a hell of a run. But when you've got that like we had traven eight or nine ex-oilers who had all won the Stanley Cup. They're the ones that's on the down because they knew how to win. And you learn from guys like that and I was lucky enough to learn from them and then I was able to pass that along to the guys and Detroit when I went there. I've been played for the Rangers and just you know we had good teams. We lost in the Eastern Conference finals the one year just to support you getting everything. But the biggest thing I remember is in the trainers run. There's two huge photos of you guys during the parade and people hanging out of the windows and throwing papers like what was that let that whole run like and then that day specifically like how incredible is that. Yeah, the run was amazing. Even at going into games six in Jersey when we're down three to two in Mesquia, Guarantee and the win. Stefan Mato scored two double overtime goals in that series against the Devils. I believe that was Marty's first year was that his rookie years a goal center, Marty Bruder. I think it was yeah, yeah, might have been and then the championship going to City Hall doing the speech. The what was it called the can it is your opinions. I think it was candy the champions. There's there's people 20 30 40 stories up sitting outside their window with their feet dangling over the edge is throwing all this ticker tape down. I don't know how people don't get injured on that. But it was it that's I got video of that. That's something I will never forget. It was really cool. Did you guys lose the cup to that when you guys were celebrating? I didn't know. I thought Glenn Haley was saying that him and like Kiprio's lost it or something like that. Oh yeah, I had my ring. Like date like and they fell back. So like fuck we didn't even really do anything to win the thing compared to the other guys were the ones who lost it. It could it could be I actually that was the last year before they had to keep her the cup. We used to that's why they got it. We that's not totally the I had to go to the airport to pick up the cup. It's coming around on the baggage claim. I get the case out. I open up the case grabbed the cup. The top is broken from the bottom. I had gotten the cup from the owner of the Rangers and he sent me a broken cup. So what does a smart farm boy do? I went with some silver solder and I started it back together. And it lasted for another another month or two and then next year they got to keep for the cup. That is unbelievable. You know, you know, stand the cup. Yeah. Just let's just packed it in about seven places. You could barely see it, but it held the cup on. Did you ever talk to the owner about it and say, Hey, you sent me a broken cup. No, I didn't want to tell anyone that I fixed it. So I didn't want to know it was broken. That is so good. That is so good. Send the league a bill. So here it is. Here's G wrote of the chat. Him and Kripros lost the cup and they found it 15 blocks away a few hours later with a bunch of Irish dudes. That makes sense. It was brought to Newton. What's even crazier is that you as a teammate have never heard that story. That is crazy. That's so funny. That's so funny. We got to talk because there are such trash buckets now and they were the worst home team all season long. We got to kill a few more stories. So these Rangers fans can get a little bit of, you know, a little bit of love in their life. If anything else you could remember, like you talked about the oilers guys kind of stepping up in the room and calming things down. Was there like a speech in particular. Obviously, you know, if you want to talk even about the guarantee by messy, he said that everybody kind of found out from the newspapers and the bus on the way back for pre-game skate. So I guess just break down that run there. Yeah, you know what, that was that series, I believe it was game. Oh, I can't remember what game, but that's when keen and bench Brian leech in one of the games. Our best hockey player we have and he didn't play him for like last two periods against New Jersey. So that little little fire under us too. And I might have been might have been game four when he benched him, but. I think mask guaranteeing that win. He didn't mean in that way when I talked to him. I wasn't trying to be Joan Amos and do that. What else is going to say they asked me if you're going to win. He says, yeah, we're going to win. Of course we're going to win. Well, you get the New York media. You guys know that. and they turn that into whatever they want to turn it into. So that, that actually probably condes down. But I think in that game as well, we might have been down one or two goals and had to come back and win that game, uh, game six as well. So that wasn't like, because back then, everyone had the newspapers outreading, right? Like when you got on the bus, who was mess like, ah, fuck, sorry, boys, didn't need to put some more pressure on you guys. No, I think he, from talking to him, he was a little unsure what to say in the cab to the ring. But when he got on the bus, he was like, yeah, I meant to say that. Let's do this. Like he where he took, he took full responsibility and said, let's just get this thing done. And he did. We're a hat trick in a third period. Yeah, I mean, that, that team was just so loaded. I mean, was, was teaking in there too? Yeah, we got teaking in a trade debt or that year anyway, that, that is, uh, probably one of the only teams ever to win the Stanley Cup that they're leading score in a regular season was a defenseman. And their leading score in the playoffs was the other defenseman. Yeah, Zuboff. Zuboff led the lead lead lead lead our team during the regular season and leechy led our team in the playoffs. That's a pretty good stat. People don't know. That was his first full year in the NHL. The year, the year before he played 49 games, maybe he got injured, but I mean, such a young demon to come in and do that where you guys like, fuck, what, this guy's incredible. He was, he was so talented, so skilled. And there's another guy that he would smoke between periods as well. Oh, yeah, for sure. He was a, but he, he was so damn good. I have a vivid memory because I've told, told on the pod before that the Rangers run, you guys run in 94. I was 11. It was like my route, like becoming a super fan of the game. And in game seven, Zuboff to leech, D to D for a goal. And it was like below the, the face off thoughts to like looking back. It's like those, that's how offensive they were. They were kind of all over the place. It looked like a center to a winger. And it was the two leading scoring demon, like down low in game seven. I don't know if it was the first goal, but I'm sure you remember. I think it was the first goal. Yeah, I think it was first goal. Yeah, they were so skilled and so talented. And then guys like Kovalev, one of, it was like his first or second year too. He was, he was a superstar as well. I could only imagine like he talked about Leech and Dean in his relationship. Like what him and Zuboff get into it at all because offensive demand. You got to imagine Keenan a couple of bad pitches. He's fucking losing his melon. I don't think he didn't bother the Russians too much other than Kovalev on that one, one play, but nothing bothered, nothing bothered Zuby, nothing bothered Leechy. The fact that he was bench pissed everybody else off on the ice because I don't care what he does. He can make up for it. And Keenan was just flexing his muscles at that point. And we had, we couldn't say in much about it at that time. But I guess we could say it worked because we won the cup that year. Imagine how good Zuboff and Leech would be nowadays with like the freedom that demon have. It would be a joke. And maybe putting Nick Livstream with them too. I had some pretty good demon that I got. Jesus. Yeah. Well, I was just going to talk more about Zuboff because the answer saying like rarely back then would a guy get the green light to like make a move with the blue line where you're seeing like Lane Hudson's coming in like first shift of the, you know, first, his first game he's ever playing. He's doing juke at the blue line. Was that kind of how Zuby was were, were you guys would go out on him and he'd be like, whoop, make a mess. Like there's a fun to watch again. And one mixed tape to her hot sauce going at it. He was so smooth and he wasn't scared of making a mistake. And he didn't make very many. But yeah, he did, he did a lot of stuff with the blue line that most defensemen wouldn't do. I mean, the other guys like Jay Wells and Jeff Bookabum and Doug Lidster, they weren't doing that stuff with the blue line. They were getting it in deep. Who was your like, who were you playing with mostly on your line in that run? Probably them Chinov and Matt McCavish, Matti. Okay. And Matti, no bucket. It was just wild to look back and see the final face off, right? Or one of one of the face offs. I think it was mess was the final one. But I don't know. I might have been Matti that took that final draw. Okay. But like we see the only guy in the league then with no bucket still. I believe so. I think he was the last last one of the dinosaurs to not wear a bucket and people say that he'd like still like he'd like head butt guys with helmets on didn't he say that like he put it on at one point and then guys sticks were coming up so then he took it back off. I think you got hit first game first practice. He did it. He got like stitches in his chin. He's like, fuck this back helmet back off. Well, you know what? When you see a guy without a helmet, you are a lot more careful in the ice. And that's maybe they should all take him off today in today's game and get rid of all that high stick and and chipping us. I think Richter two on that team doesn't get enough or the credit that he deserves with how good he played. I mean, he was obviously an amazing goalie, but that's that whole playoff run. He was incredible. Yeah, Richter's one of the greatest goalies that I ever played with. And then right after that, he goes and wins the the world world cup or whatever for you. I think you that the next year too. So he was this I don't know how he didn't play longer. He was always in great shape. He wasn't one of the goalies that were on the larger size, but he was he was a true superstar in our team. So you finish you end up with a quick stop, maybe a trade to Vancouver the next year. And then you go back to Detroit. Now for you, it must have been like, all right, they haven't won yet. I've kind of been through the battle and seen what it takes. You already mentioned you could help those guys out. You had to be so excited going back there and now understand like what it takes to win with that roster. Vancouver didn't resign me. So I was back in Michigan here living working out, trying to get in stage shape to play. I didn't get a contract. So I was actually playing on the Red Wing alum 19. And I was playing purely hockey at the time. And happened to go down to a game in November when Chicago was in town. And I saw Probe after the game and I told Probe next time he comes to Detroit, act up a little bit, make sure they know that they got to get a little tougher for the rest of the season. And he did. And the next day, Scottie Bowman called my agent and said, tell Joe to go down to minors and get in shape. Wow. And I went down to play six games in San Antonio, came back at Christmas and Scottie called me up and said, we're you staying here for the rest of the year. Holy shit. Brobe got me back in the back in the game. When the fuck did that idea come to your head? When I ran into him after the game, I mean, I just said, I just casually mentioned it. But then add to the story, my second game back was in Chicago Stadium. And I dropped the gloves three minutes in with Probe. We had a fight. I land on top of him and I looked down at him. It's Probe. Thanks for getting me back in the league. And you know, he was. He just, hey, no problem. Big boy. And that was it. That's amazing. It's unbelievable. You didn't let him beat you up. No, like you find it hilarious that like the Detroit guys when they heard their plug. Thanks a lot for that one game. You told them to run around before you were back. Holy shit. I didn't tell him for a while. They're going to find out now. He's going to get the phone calls. You fucking piece of shit. I got ran for behind that game. But so they actually didn't have much muscle then. No, like you went to the game. You could tell, hey, all right. Well, I know I can add something here and it worked out. But I wonder why I wonder why Scotty that year hadn't hadn't had anything like you in the lineup before before he signed you. I don't know. They they they were team tough. There's no question there. McCarty was there. Marty Lapointe was there. Brennan Chanan was there. Defense ball Rouse was pretty strong. I just think they needed maybe a missing piece that just maybe a little bit of fear for the other team. But when I when I went there, my first practice, Scotty called me into the room and he says, I don't want you fighting that anymore. And I was confused about that. But his his thought was as long as I'm on the bench, he can send me out there. If I'm in the penalty box, he doesn't control me. And it made sense though. So I got a chance to join the grind line with Molten Drapes and we had a we had a hell of a run together. When you went down to San Antonio, did like some poor guy in the IHL? Did did you have to beat a couple guys off down there just to remember how it felt? I did. I had to I think it might have been the Roll Bears twins or brothers or something. I did have to try to do a little bit down there just to make sure I wasn't embarrassing myself when I came back. Were those guys hungry though to get you on the resume? They were probably like, yeah. Well, no, you talked about those twins. They must have been scrappers their whole time, right? Like to sometimes you think, oh, they'd be afraid, but sometimes they're like, oh, it's like an honor to get to go toe to toe with coach. Yeah, there was no problem. They didn't turn me down at all. So I was that was good. But it's it's unique. If you've never been to a place like San Antonio, there they were salesmen in between periods, intermission, selling guys cowboy boots. It's just so relate back and relax. Your guys would take their skates off and try on cowboy boots before the second period. Me and wet both played there. I played there. I was all you did. That's where I fell in love with golf. You get healthy scratches in the HR and I got a new thing that I love now and I love it. It was a lot of fun. It was a cool arena and a good spot. I mean, they still have a team, right? Are they still in the HR? No, I was the I was San Antonio drag and I think it was the eye. Okay. It was the eye then. But I'm wondering. So you're not there the year before you bury straits from behind. They lose a heartbreaker of the abs. The abs win the cup. Then the abs win the president's trophy. You're in town now in Detroit and you meet up in the conference finals. It's like, it's now or never. Now they'd already had the brawl, I believe, right? That was in March before the playoffs. So that probably helped out a lot going into the series against them. Like we've already stood up to them. We've gotten a little bit of retribution, but we got to take them out now. What were your memories of the brawl and of that Western conference final in 97? Well, I know the brawl brought the team together. And probably one of the, that's parts about the brawl. I'm not saying because I missed it. I was, I was sick that day. But the team that, the team that they had at the time was the team that stood up to Colorado. They didn't bring in a hired gun to help out. McCarty did it. The team just got all the kinds of confidence after that. And not only people, I think they won that game and Mack might have scored an overtime in that game, but they, they got all the confidence and they got the monkey off their back because Claude Lemieux was talking the town for way too long. Once that was over, we could concentrate just on playing the game and, and that's what we're able to do. Mack must have been a treat to see in the locker room as a young guy. He, Mack was awesome. And he, and he still is. I probably seemed two or three times a week. We golfed together, played a lot of hockey together. He's a, he's a great friend as well. That's awesome. He dropping off some of that special stuff he has. Yeah, you smoke a few bowls because he's got. I don't. I smell it all the time, but I, that's, I like my beer and stuff. I don't, I don't do that stuff. Did you ever have a chance to go watch his band play? Because I believe when he was playing in the NHL at one point in the summers, he would also tour with his buddies. And they would go around and sing. Did you ever get a chance to go watch one of his shows? We saw it a couple times. He yells loud. He's not a musician at all. I love Mack, but, uh, I mean, he's always trying something new. He's wrestling now. He's got. He, probably gonna go in. We're going to be tag team partners. The weed boys. I, I, I mean, you were in New York. It's 54 years. You get the cop. The fans, the experience you talked about. I think it was around 40, 45 years since Detroit had won, right? So you get to experience these two original six teams that are breaking curses. I guess you could call it. And then like the, euphoria after, I mean, what was Detroit and hockey town like after that first one, which was a sweep too. So it made it even, even probably a little, a little nicer, just like, not much stress in that cup final for you guys. No, actually, we were, we were underdogs in that cup final. Everybody had picked the Legion of Doom to beat us out. And, uh, yeah, that was, that was a sweep. I mean, the, the city was just electric. I know back in the day, everyone to have those flags hanging outside of their cars. And it was all red wings. I mean, there was no other sports team that anyone even knew of in Detroit at that time. And to win the Stanley Cup there, have the parade there. Uh, but then we had to cut short real quickly with, uh, with the car accident, which made it very, very tough time. But, uh, as much as we could celebrate, we did. And going, going back to that series, we had Johnny LaClaire on years ago. And he, it was him, Renberg and Lindross and the Legion of Doom. He mentioned it was Lidstrom and Murphy, like not even physical guys just positionally and sticks. And it was, those two were so good together. Like that, that line didn't really get much going because of basically them. And I don't know if a forward line was matched up against them. But that deep pair was just incredible. You must have seen it every day in practice. Yeah. Yeah. Nick Lidstrom is arguably the best pure defenseman ever to play the game. Nothing against Mr. Or he was the greatest offensive. But, yeah. Nick, you couldn't get around Nick. And the good thing with, uh, with like Scotty again is, Scotty didn't have one line on them. The grind line, we were on them, probably half a dozen shifts the game. They just kept making different changes for people. But he made sure that whatever forwards were on them were big and heavy, whether we're shanny or Mac or, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, multi, uh, multi, lapoint, the defense he didn't care about. He just wanted the big heavy forwards to, uh, we'll slow them down because back, back in those days, you could hook onto somebody and they weren't getting by and you weren't getting penalty. So that's all my zone too. You just ride them like a watersky. Yeah. So that's why Nick and, uh, Murph never got hit because we just just held on to him so they couldn't go anywhere. Well, did, did you ever see Nick Lidstrom like get fired up? He seems like a guy who was always just calm, like not too high, not too low, like the epitome of it. Like, was there any time you ever saw him got really fired up? I would imagine that the coaching staff never had to talk to him. The perfect man. You never, nobody ever had to talk to him. Uh, and I never once saw him lose his cool, get mad. Ever. I mean, that's, that's pretty impressive. Uh, but no, he was always, always right on point. Imagine 22 years, Keith and not having like a meeting with the coach. Like, way, it's going on the last 22 days. I couldn't go to 22 days, man. No, getting called Twitter this and it none of it was even hockey related for Fox six. He is just, oh, my God. It's who, who was like, who did, who did he look up to? Like, did you ever have any conversation? Where do you learn how to be that type of guy? Jesus, Borey, probably right. Borey's songming was probably the best Swedish player ever. But he was a psychopath out there. He'd be running people and like fighting like they weren't exactly the same type player. Yeah. Borey was pretty smooth. He finishes. No, I know. I know. Yeah. He was, he was good. So, well, you know, Nick, Nick and Stevie and, and Sergey and Egor, they were all the same type of players like really smart, good, talented. They probably had their own meetings. I don't know. I wasn't in those meetings. I was a, I was a malt, be draper and McCarty having their own meetings in the bar or something. Lidstrom's one of those guys. Every team that plays against them, they get, hey, we got to get hits on five. We got to make them feel uncomfortable. But no one could have, I never saw him get lined up or get hit in a vulnerable spot. He was just always in the perfect position. Yeah. No, he, he saw the ice so well. But again, to that point is, if somebody was coming in on him, there was two wingers holding onto that guy to slow him down, so he never got hit. If, if Nick got hit when I was on the ice, I would be in so much trouble. So we, we had to protect him all the time. Was there a local like pub or watering hole? You guys had go to after games. Did you have your spot like in Detroit to have a couple post game beers? Probably not not so much in the 90s because everyone's spread out. We'd have beer in the locker room after back in the players lounge. But then everyone had their wives at the games and most of us would have babysitters at home. So, so maybe in the 80s was a little different. When we were all much younger and single, we'd always have places to go after after games or practices. But when I was in my 30s, we'd, we'd have a couple beer and head home with our wives. Can you tell the story in it's in the notes here about right before you got called up when you chipped your hand on Jim play fair's teeth and almost lost your arm because of it? All the, so the Jim play fair fight was a little different than the one that I had my surgery on. I was actually, I think it's been Halifax out on the East Coast playing in the minors. And it was a Saturday night game and it was Jim play fair that I fought. And after the game, coach called me into his office and said, you are getting called up to Detroit and I was going up with Eddie Meal. So Eddie Meal and I jumped in the airplane, flew to Toronto. Ironically in Toronto, I got to meet Wayne Gratsky and Dave Semenko. It was there making a, going through the airport, Eddie Meal would play with them. So I got a chance to say hi to them on my way to Detroit. I get to the ring the next morning and my hand was swollen up real bad. And I go out for pre-game skate in the morning, couldn't even put a glove on it because it was so swollen. And the coach at the time said, listen, I just want you sitting on the bench tonight. You don't have to have a shift. I want them to know you're here. I'm like, my first game, I'll do it. Problem was the trainer looked at it, took me right to the hospital and I had emergency surgery by five o'clock or they said another few hours I lost my arm because of the bad infection from, from a tooth. But that's what got fixed up. And while I don't think tooth's in there, but they didn't clean it up before they stitched it up. And I had it stitched up for two days before the doctor could see it. So I did the same thing. Mine was a bar fight. Remember I told you guys about that when we got infected. Mine probably could have gotten infected also by the captain Morgan. I tried to clean it out with. But that, how long were you in the hospital for? I had to spend a full week in the hospital. I think I lost like 15 pounds. Yeah, I was, I was in the hospital for two weeks on a morphine drip for a while. And then they, when I got out, they sent me back to the miners to get in shape. And I was, I came back probably about two months later to make my debut in the league. Thank God that happened while you were in the NHL. What year was, oh, that was early days. I would have been 84, 85. Yeah, Keith, that's a good point. What you just said. Yeah, like, thank God that happened while you were in the NHL because you never know in the NHL, the, you know, doctors are a little different. So that was a blessing to be up in the NHL getting that surgery. Oh, it was, it's probably the only reason I have my hand today is, uh, because I mean, you guys know, we got stitched up. It was in the locker room laying on, uh, on the table. And they didn't do a good job of cleaning it. And then we'd have been on probably a week long road trip from bus to bus. Yeah, it would have probably been a different scenario if I wasn't in Detroit at the time. Jesus. Oh my god. So did you have surgery? from that it was that a different story you were saying that you it was that the surgery you didn't mean surgery on it or just like a trip and okay. Yeah. They had to open it up and leave it leave it open for a week. Just air it out and get all the all the infection out of it. It was a poor pink Whitney on it. Now it is pinkies up. No, the same same thing they opened it up and they put like like a, um, a gauze in it like like a like and they they like ghosted something like it like stuff that would help with the infection and every day they don't have to come and like clean that gauze out gauze out clean it back out and then repack it again like it's a fucking process man. It's a pain in the ass. Yeah. It was it was a it wasn't it was tough, but you know what? What we had to do? Yeah, it's weird too when it gets so swollen. It feels like you're like it's coming through your skin and just the throbbing of it like it's and like you can't even like move your fingers because you're so swollen. So it's it's pretty wild. Um, what was it like your last year? It looks like you played about half the amount of games like what was it like kind of saying goodbye to the game? It was tough. Um, I was having some back problems. Uh, I had had, uh, uh, uh, herniest surgery. I think I probably had it in the off season. So I was coming back from that. I was going to a chiropractor. I was going to, uh, acupuncturist. I did everything I could, uh, to do it, but the thing was I could play a game, but I couldn't practice and then play. And I figured if I'm not practicing, I can't be playing anyway. So, uh, it was it was tough to say goodbye to the game. I was lucky enough to get the stick around with the team and become that video coach and stay with my buddies and then coach behind the bench for two years. I don't I kind of wish that I'd chased out a little longer, but, uh, I was, I was, I had my time up in hockey. And once I got done coaching, I got to coach my son for about 15 years. So it was all worth that too. And Wendell was on that team too. So I must have been cold of finish with him. Yeah. We got that one year. We got Wendell and Shelley came that year as well. Um, sorry. My phone is ringing right now. Another legendary demon you played with. It's one of your own. Yeah. They're hacked in. They heard that you had proby run around that game. They're already calling you. He said he put it in his book. That's where everyone found out. I don't know what that's got. Yeah. No, I think, I think the Stanley Cup soldering it back together was one of one of them. You know what? Some of the Stanley Cup parties. Uh, once the keeper of the cup, they they created that job. Uh, we want a couple more cups and they would come to my farm in Kelvington where mom and dad were and we'd have a bonfire there and all night bonfire. Now when you get the cup, there's a curfew for the cup. Back when we had it, you just got to keep it. Uh, one year, I think it was 98 when we, uh, we raised the banner and Detroit before the season, I looked at the keeper of the cup and I said, what's what do you got going on for the cup tonight? He goes, nothing. I said, can I take it with me? He says, sure, but you got to have it at the LHS little Caesars building tomorrow morning at eight o'clock. But I'm like, fair enough. I grabbed the cup. I start driving home. I start making a few phone calls, take it to my local watering bar, Lutman's tavern. And we filled the bar up with everyone came. We drank all night there, seven o'clock in the morning. I had to drive it to the Liches little Caesars, dropped the cup off then went downtown to practice, slept in the stick room for a couple hours and had an awful practice because I was not feeling good. What about the story? And we've kind of heard it before a little bit, but of the, the biker gang bar fight with Kelly Chase and Wendell Clark. Like, is there any memory, there any memories of that one? It, I don't, I didn't remember that it was a biker gang, but, uh, it was fit the croaky bar back home. I thought it was a rugby team. No, they would never be players. That could be a chaser story that I wasn't part of. But no, the wendell and the chaser one was, uh, that's when Wendell was first drafted. And he was, listen, he was awesome player, but he was also our, uh, our little brother that we always had to watch out for. We couldn't let him get hurt. And, and I think we were in the bar and we thought he was getting picked on while his brother Don and chaser and me and killer Kaminsky. We all had to jump in and, and evidently he wasn't getting beat up, but we didn't know at the time, but we made sure we got those guys to anyway in case they were even thinking about it. Just something. I was reading your mind. You were thinking about making fun of him, man. To be sorry about that, but we were just protecting our guy. Yeah. What is that? What's that hat? You got it. Looks like a hockey player holding two kids hands. Pretty cool lid. Yeah. That's my foundation logo. I started the Joe. That's awesome. Days for children back in 2008. And we've been doing a charity event and stuff ever since it's, uh, it's been great. I learned from the very best. I learned from Mr. Ted Lindsay about giving back the community and, and he taught me that and I've been doing it since like I said, oh, eight. You think, uh, you think the wings are going to get it done? You think they're going to get enough playoffs? Do a month ago I did. Uh, then they go into Buffalo and play best game of the year. And then we lose that home the other night. So I'm hoping they do. Well, Philly's eight one and one in their last. Right. Yeah. They're positive. Yeah. You know what? Little Caesars Arena has never seen a playoff game. And I know if wings could make it in that that would just be so good for that building and so good for the team and, and so good for well, Stevie and, and Dylan, the guys that haven't been there in a while. So I'm hoping that they do. They still have time. But you can't make any more mistakes. What would, did they have like a, uh, closing of the Joe, where everyone kind of came back? Uh, because I think I can speak for all three of us is one of the best barns that we ever played in. So fun. And it was kind of one of the last old ones too. These to have the, the towels that were like, uh, trash bags. Every how bad their towels were. And then during playoffs, only one shower head would be working to be 20 guys trying to. The boards were so bouncy and put the puck, Lidstrom, put the puck off the back of the, the net boards right to home stream in the slot. You're like, what just happened? Yeah, that was, that was a unique place. I mean, the real good thing about that place compared to the new one is they only had one room to go to like the alumni room or whatever was called downstairs. So everybody got to see everybody. The new buildings, especially those seizures, has so many different clubs that the, the fans aren't all together as one as much. And Joel Lewis Arena, it was, when it, when it was playoff time and there was no place better. There was no place better. And, and there was some quirks with the rank or in the locker rooms or I don't know if you heard right before the Colorado series, the one year Scotty decided to have the visitors room painted right the day before just to make sure that I really dumped for those guys. Art moves. So yeah, there's a, or I think it was actually in the 88 and we're playing the oilers when Jacques Demierce had them shut the, the ice machine off. So there's water on the ice to slow those guys down a little bit, messing grettes in the boys too. So they always tried something different in each right. They used to have the high benches, but as a member of their high benches, your legs would be dead. Oh, I know. I wouldn't even get to sit on that one because they were so tight. I think that the away bench would have about five fewer feet. So I was kind of just in everybody's way. So I would sit where the goalie sat on a stool over by the door. No, you good? Okay, I'll just shut the fuck up over here. Yeah, that was my job. But what a, like, that was one of the coolest things is getting to go to like old school barns like that. Like, you know, to get to say I played there or at least backscated there was, was pretty cool. And then like, and then I would be healthy scratched most of the time, I would go up into the crowd and I'd get to see that soup go to work. So that must, we didn't really talk about him and all like holy shit, man. He would use those boards like a fucking pool table out there. Yeah, I actually seen Holly this week at, uh, with Chase's event, Holly, Holly claims that Pavel's most talented player he ever played with and Holly had, Craig Jan, he had Adam Olex, but Pavel was something very special. After the game, the other night, we, uh, we were at the Chaser event and I went out of the corner upstairs for 90 minutes. But yeah, while in Junior Hopkins, Saskatoon, especially my parents would come to almost every home game, drive off. It was pretty special. Yeah. Have you ever thought about how many fights you actually might have had? Like, it could be 400, 500. Have you ever actually thought about that? That's a stupid question. Great question. No. No. Whoever did our book, Bruce Brothers has the amount of fights I had in the regular season. But then you've got to bring in. Not including Junior, right? Not including Junior. You got like 90, 95 empty netters off the ice. Honestly, I think it's in the 200s, but I don't. I have looked at it a while. You know, I guess I probably 500 fights in my life. Would it be easy to say the one where you landed on Prober and said, thanks for getting me back in the league. And then you got two cups. Was that your most memorable? That, well, that one. And then Jim Kite fight because the Jim fight. Good night, Jim Kite. Got me a little notoriety where people started to stay away from me a little bit. But yeah, getting back in the league and winning two cups with Detroit after the proby fight was, uh, would be the top one. I agree. That was the good night. Jim Kite biz. Oh my god. I forget who they were playing, but it was like an actual NHL highlight in the background. Obviously, you know, they were in business together. So, uh, that DTF St. Louis. I mentioned Jason Bateman. That finished the other night. Awesome show. It's a real slow burn. It's not soft for sure. I heard it's weird as shit. It is with. But like when you stick with it, you kind of like, oh man, I'm glad I stuck with it. Cause it's just, uh, it's not so it's not like just a murder mystery. It's sort of a sad tie. But then it kind of has a unique, uh, I guess I don't know. Less, less sort of a message at the end. So give that a whirl. Uh, one more here. Classic recommendation. Arrested development. If you never saw it, I would, the first three seasons. Those are the ones to watch. Uh, one of the most absurd, uh, cringy comedy. Like, I don't know. Funny shows of the 20th century by 21st century, rather. What you must have. That has Bateman and, uh, and Will Arnett. Will Arnett. Bateman. Yeah. Jeffrey Tambua. Uh, what's her name? Uh, Walters. I forget her first name. It's just just hilarious. Uh, uh, blah, blah, blah, blah. Just absurd hilarious humor. Great stuff. I think that's one of Will Arnett's best roles. He plays Job in that. I think it's one of the funniest characters on television. They got another movie cooking right now. I saw uh, between like Will Arnett, uh, uh, the guy who is in, um, there will be blood. No, no, no, no, not that. No, um, was it a movie or a star was born? The guy. Bradley Cooper. Oh, yeah, Bradley Cooper. Yeah, uh, is this thing on? No, they just, they dropped that already. But I saw that they have another show or, or movie that's coming out where they're all working together. So these guys are just machines. They just drop show and movie after show. All right. I heard that, uh, at one of these film festivals, um, the trailer for the social reckoning came out, which is the, you know, social network was the, the Facebook movie. And now this is like what's happened since. Oh, and I think Jeremy Strong from, from Sesson plays Mark Zuckerberg. Um, and I guess the trailer at this, at this, uh, at this film festival, like people were just raving about how good it looks. Social network was. Social network was unreal. Unbelievable. Unreal movie. So the social reckoning, I believe. Oh, I've seen social network. I swear. Yeah. People, they, I've heard that too, what they've been raving about what they've seen out. I mean, he's one of those like crazy method actors too. And he, he's like from around his local. And he was a kid, like 10, 11 years old. He was like basically stock movie sets when they were filming movies here. And his parents let him like fly to like LA and stay with like executives, like to learn the craft. That's normal.
