Spider-Man Becomes Biggest Film Of 2026 In Just 7 Days - The John Campea Show

Spider-Man: Brand New Day set a historic box office record, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2026 in just seven days and breaking multiple domestic records. This success reignited a long-standing Hollywood tradition where top filmmakers celebrate each other’s achievements, such as the Russo brothers’ tribute to the Spider-Man team, underscoring the industry’s collaborative spirit. Meanwhile, fans reacted to the news that Jessica Henwick will not return as Colleen Wing in Daredevil: Born Again, citing concerns about character devaluation and career sustainability. The cancellation of Wonder Man season two was attributed to shifting creative and financial priorities at Marvel and Disney, with leadership fearing the show’s limited appeal compared to high-performing franchises. The proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. merger faces severe legal and financial obstacles, including a delayed trial in 2027, massive daily penalties, and a June 4th termination deadline, making a successful merger highly unlikely. The show also explores how Spider-Man’s success reflects broader societal themes of alienation and connection, resonating with modern audiences. Ultimately, the discussion reveals the complex interplay between box office performance, creative traditions, corporate strategy, and cultural relevance in today’s entertainment landscape.

what we're here to talk about because the most important people here today are you thank you guys for taking your time to spend a little bit of your precious hours with us here as we talk about our favorite things in the world movies and movie news tv and streaming and all that good stuff so here's how today's show is going to go we're going to start off by talking about a number of predetermined topics we got lined up for you guys then in the second part of the show i'm going to talk about a number of things that we're going to talk about live comments and questions if you guys have a thought theory opinion question or an issue you'd like me to discuss go ahead and fire down into our super chat now two things one you have to be watching live to send in a question on the super chat and two i have to deem it appropriate to be addressed on the show but if it meets both those criteria we'll get to that in the second part of the show all right guys with that all down let's get things started with this shall we well you guys will remember uh that uh just this weekend spider-man brand new day set the all-time opening weekend box office record breaking what quite frankly for a long time i thought might be a record that would never be broken the record of avengers endgame that had an opening weekend of a ridiculous 375 or 357 million dollars spider-man brand new day comes along breaks that record insane and now kind of a great tradition that i love in the movie business actually but avengers doomsday's russo brothers congratulate spider-man brand new day on the box office success as they say the gauntlet has been passed and what they did they did a great thing you guys know we've had the wonderful uh you know living treasure who's been on this show before boss logic he's just a an absolute treasure so they used an image boss logic made for them which you can see here and the russo brothers wrote this when they posted that picture huge congratulations to destin toms and day at jacob john mark sadie florence michael marissa producers kevin amy avi rachel and the entire spider-man brand new day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history the gauntlet has been passed so i this is the continuation of what of a tradition now in the movie industry that i personally think is a very important part of the movie industry and i think it's a very important part of the history that i personally absolutely love and adore if you go back to when titanic came out and this is where for me i think it really started if you go back to when titanic came out and it became the biggest film in history you guys remember george lucas i think he put this in the new york times he's got all the star wars characters sinking on the titanic and as as titanic broke star wars records and it says jim congratulations george and i thought that was wonderful and then that tradition continued when uh avengers came along avengers endgame came along and dethroned titanic it said to kevin and everybody at marvel an iceberg sank the real titanic it took the avengers to sink my titanic everyone here at light storm entertainment salutes your amazing achievement you've shown that the movie industry not only is alive and well it's bigger than ever jim cameron and then of course the movie industry not only is alive and well it's bigger than ever jim cameron and then of course when avatar came out later on did the thing the russos wrote a letter and that it just been this wonderful wonderful wonderful tradition of when like some major box office record gets set that the filmmakers or directors or stars of the previous record holder write in this come up with something creative to do and it's actually almost guys become a little bit of a this is just one of those little traditions that makes me like being a film fan and it makes me like the film industry and i love seeing stuff like this even if james cameron is sitting at home those mother effers or whatever i'll write my congratulate whatever he does it he writes note anyway rob i don't know if you can remember this going on prior to when george lucas and made that iconic one congratulating them on titanic but what do you think about this little tradition that starts the russos of course writing the note uh to the spider-man guys uh what's your favorite thing about this well it kind of shows the esprit de corps that all of these filmmakers have you know with one another i mean these are these are filmmakers that have earned the right to work in a very rarefied air they're pushing technology further than it's ever been pushed the marvel cinematic universe started out on a wing and a prayer and they didn't even know if that was going to work with iron man one all the naysayers like why he's a third string character who's gonna go see that movie you know and marvel bet on that you know and and when you get to end game you see the culmination of of an unbelievable string of beautifully conceived and well executed films that landed with the public every time jimmy c goes the goes to the well people like camera's gonna screw up this time titanic was a failure that one was gonna go see it the avatar movies were folly what's he doing with this 3d motion capture business and yet it's these big giant swings you know universal after making 150 million dollars off american graffiti universal's like we're not gonna make star wars what do you want to do what and it wasn't until alan ladd jr said well let's see what the lucas kids got you know and then they they these are these are people that are are going to be the ones who are are happy with the success of other filmmakers they revel in it and it kind of in a way john it's kind of the spirit of america if you want to go that far on our 250th anniversary i mean the motion picture business was something that really the the united states created and now to see the culmination of it i mean we're literally entertaining the world on a scale that is combining the cutting edge of technology with the grand storytelling of that goes really goes all the way back to people like homer telling tales so it's all good by the way i i forgot to mention this is actually because it's really little creative this is a neat one when um avatar retook the all-time box office thing marvel studios wrote uh out said congratulations to jim cameron and john landau the producer of the avatar films and all of navi nation for reclaiming the box office crown we love you three thousand and they made this little video thing that i thought was really cool i just it's just a simple little thing i just thought that thing was really cool i like that a lot anyway sean um you know this is maybe i'm just being you know what's the word i'm looking for a little uh romantic about it but this is a little thing that i really like that happens in the film industry i'd like to see continue what do you think about when you see these things and have you had a favorite one yeah i mean i think it's just really classy classy is the word that comes to mind and as much as i think it's really classy i think it's really classy i think it's really much as you know jim cameron russos these are probably incredibly competitive people being the top dog meant the world to them but also they're acknowledging other people have come along and done something astounding as much as people say things like well with ticket price inflation really actually each of these movies came out at different times with different benefits with different obstacles they faced and each of them did something astounding something incredible that just cut through and accomplished something amazing and the fact that the purse previous person that was holding the statue that had the award went all right i'm passing the baton you you did it well done classy is the world word that comes to mind um star wars characters on the titanic it's tough to beat that one that is that's just really funny so that is the best one all right guys question is for you what do you think about this the russos wrote a really nice little piece and put this thing out congratulating spider-man for beating their opening weekend box office record do you have a favorite one maybe destin's gonna have to write his own back to the russos when avengers doomsday comes out whatever you guys think about it jump down to the comment section below and let us know your thoughts all right guys with that down let's move on to this shall we well the train wreck that was known as iron fist, uh, did have, if you asked just about everybody around one shining light in it and that one shining light was colleen wing played by jessica henwick that seems to be the one thing everybody can agree on was probably a bright spot in iron fist not just because the character was really cool written very well and jessica henwick did a great job portraying the character and when we found out that in daredevil season three we were getting basically the defenders were all coming back we know luke cage is back we've now found out that iron fist is coming back a lot of people started wondering about some of the secondary characters surrounding all the various defender characters and right at the top of that list was people wondering about jessica henwick's colleen wing well bad news cometh because according to jessica henwick colleen wing is not coming back for daredevil born again season three this comes to us from the folks over at ign who write the following iron fist star jessica henwick has said her character colleen wing won't return in daredevil born again season three despite having talks with marvel wing previously appeared in the netflix series iron fist luke cage and the defenders and eventually inherited the iron fist mantle from the show's lead character danny rant fans had hoped that colleen wing would make her return in the upcoming third season of daredevil born again which is the third season of daredevil which is expected to reunite the main four defenders for the first time in almost a decade however henwick has said that while she has discussed returning in the role with marvel she ultimately opted to pass on the opportunity this is what she said i've said multiple times over the years i would love to come back i know that everyone is back this season i'm not in this season henwick told inverse we did have discussions about whether i should go back this season but for me her story ended with her going off into the sunset she has the opportunity to come back and she's the iron fist she got misty by her side daughters of the dragon is happening she ended on a really great note any future storyline involving colleen needed to be worth unpicking that ending henwick continued rather than having her return only to be just stood in the back of the shot all right i have a couple of different thoughts on this let me tell you what my first one was and then i'll tell you what it eventually evolved into my first thought was listen buddy you're an actor you're getting offered roles this isn't your character you are the actor that plays it but it's their character and you say no they can just recast you and who are you to say no to coming back and playing the character the last i checked your dance card isn't all that full it's not like you're inundated with other projects right now you should just come back and give the fans what they want i admit that was my first thought but then when i read her final line again in that quote where it said where she said rather than just come back and be the just stood in the back of the shot i started to rethink my thoughts on this because i think you can make the argument that rather than risking her future in the mcu i think you could make the argument she's protecting her potential future in the mcu because if she talked with marvel and more and as she looked at what the project was going to be if in her opinion it was really just going to be a collection of sheet scenes where she's just standing around in the back room background or she just happens to be there then what that ultimately runs the danger of doing is downgrading the value of the character you remember in once upon a time in hollywood when the uh the old producer is talking to leonardo dicaprio and say you can't be the bad guy because then you get beat up and now everybody's just used to seeing you getting beat up and now you're useless now now your your your name has no value i think for colleen wing the character i think for the character i think for the character i think maybe the danger of that exists like everybody remembers colleen wing's character great like we we love that character if all of a sudden you know you bring her back into daredevil season three and she's like the seventh or eighth person on the call sheet and most of her stuff is just standing around in the background you devalue the character and i think you run the danger of limiting the opportunities for her to be in other marvel stuff later on whereas now if you say you know what i don't think this is right for me to come back then as of right now we still remember her the way she was in iron fist and we still have her in that high regard so guys i might be i admittedly might be overthinking it but i quickly went from oh here's an actor who thinks too highly of themselves thinking they can turn out to you know what maybe this was the smart move because it might put her in a better position for other marvel stuff later than if she did accept it i again i could be wrong about that and i might be overthinking it sean uh you read her comments i don't know if you're like again i didn't like iron fist but i did like her in it an awful lot i would love to see colleen wing back what do you think about her position on turning down coming back for daredevil season three with that last sentence i think it does make a good bit of sense to me if you just look at who is who is the most important person in the movie already established as core members of the show because it's daredevil born again an established show and then we're adding in luke cage jessica jones electra and the iron fist everyone else is a higher priority than her yeah so she's like you're coming back like when she's like i'm i'm just going to be standing there i'm the secondary character to iron fist who's the least popular of these other characters that are returning and you immediately go oh why is an actress would she want to do that if it's if she's going to be a part of the movie she doesn't have a substantial part if there's not really an arc she's just tagging along with iron fist i think it can make sense to me that she's like yeah i would love to come back for an actual arc for an actual story i don't want to come back just to be like hey look we got everybody back and she's standing there like i totally understand that logic and even for the fans that are like oh she was the standout from iron fist i want her back you don't want her back to just stand there yeah you want her to actually be able to do something you don't want her to do something and um i don't even brand new day this past weekend there were you know scorpion came back and like for me i was excited to see scorpion and he only did a little bit he's only in the movie for two three minutes and he doesn't have volition of himself so it's like oh i didn't really get scorpion and that's kind of the same sort of thing like she's there she would be there but is she really there she's just on screen it's not what you want you don't get the performance the arc the characterization if she's seventh eighth build in a couple episodes yeah and by the way i think it's important to note she i never once saw in anything she said saying they should make in daredevil season three calling wing a more major character no she just looked at and said this isn't the right place for me to come back to you know better my potential future with marvel as the character so i mean i thought that was interesting anyway rob uh you read these comments um again we're not talking somebody who was going to be the number two or number three person on the call sheet i'm not talking about the number one person on the i'm sure it doesn't affect the show that much but what do you think about jessica turning down coming back as colleen wing in daredevil season three well you know jessica henwick has developed quite an interesting career for herself she's been in a lot of interesting projects played a lot of she's very chameleon like um and i i really like her i really like her screen presence and i think that you know i an actor has to take into consideration how they're perceived by the industry and you know she's she's i put her in the same i always mispronounce her name but sona mizu who starred in devs and who's now in house of the dragon she's the advisor to ranera right um they have both navigated these really interesting careers and i think they're working their way up and and they don't want to be considered to be tokenized actresses that'll just come back and here we'll we'll be in something that just to say hey to to appease a fan base that they don't even really understand anyway and it's like look if i'm going back to a show that i was a big part of i want to go back and i want to have something to do i mean actors first of all you know an actor is only as good as their last role you know they're they're building a career and she's a really fine talented actress who's on definitely on the ascendant track and i think that she wants to come back and feel that her contributions matter and that she's not just somebody who you can call up and and and have her fill in a hole or something and i i agree with her like you i mean i think she's she's somebody who's very conscious that she's building a career she's made some really interesting choices she's worked on a lot of really interesting projects even when she's in something like look i'm a matrix resurrections apologist i know controversial but but but she was great in it and um i think she brings some something special to everything that she's in. So more power to her. All right, guys, question is for you. What do you think about this? Are you as bummed out that I am as I am that Jessica will not be coming back as Colleen Wing in Daredevil season three? And at the same time, do you kind of get her rationale for it at this point too? Because maybe this gives her a better shot at coming back as Colleen in a better role. I don't know. Whatever you guys think about it, jump down into the comment section below and let us know your thoughts. All right, guys, with that down, let's move on to this, shall we? Well, it came with some surprise the other day when word came out that Wonder Man season two, a season that was never supposed to exist. The show was supposed to be a standalone one shot until it got all this awards consideration. All of a sudden, then they're saying we are coming back with season two. Only the other day for it to be announced to use an outdated term. Psych. Nope, nope. No season two for you. And it's not coming out and left a lot of us wondering, gosh, why would Kevin Feige decide not to do a Wonder Man season two? Well, according to Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Spider-Man Brand New Day, and of course, the director and showrunner of Wonder Man, it wasn't Kevin Feige's decision. This comes to us from the folks over at Yahoo Entertainment, right? The following. The show's Wonder Man series co-creator, Destin Daniel Cretton, says that he was just as confused and heartbroken as the rest of us over the show's cancellation, but that it wasn't Marvel boss Kevin Feige's decision. I love that show to death. If it were up to me, we would be making that show, Cretton said, told the wrap. And I do believe that if, and I know this sounds weird, but if it were up to Kevin, we would be doing that. That show continued Cretton. I'm just talking. I don't fully understand the business of streaming, but if the business was right, we would be making that show because I know Kevin loves that show as much as I do. It's a bummer. I'm heartbroken about it, but I need to fully understand why. All right. With that one statement, Destin Daniel Cretton has turned the unfortunate piece of entertainment news of Wonder Woman. Man season two being canceled into a full blown mystery and conspiracy theory, because if you're like me, you will say to that comment, those quotes, wait a second. I thought one of the big points about the ending of the Bob paycheck era of being the CEO of Disney was that Kevin Feige got his authority back. He got his power back. He got his decision making authority back to decide what to do next. Which projects get made with Marvel and which ones don't of course, famously taken away from him under the Bob paycheck era. So what's going on here? Like why is this? If Kevin Feige is not making the decision, who's making the decision? Well, it would give us an opportunity here to go over and take a look at the power tree that exists over at Marvel because Kevin Feige isn't just his own boss. He does have to answer to a couple of people. And who does Kevin Feige report to? Well, Kevin Feige's immediate boss is Alan Bergman, the chairman of Disney Entertainment Studios. Of course, a role that used to be occupied famously by probably the single greatest movie executive ever in history, Alan Shore, who then of course retired for a second time. So he's not there anymore. But now Alan Bergman is the chairman of Disney Entertainment Studios. Alan himself reports now to Dana Walden, who is the president and chief creator of the Disney Entertainment Studios. And Dana Walden reports, of course, not to Big Papa Iger because he's retired again, but rather Disney's new CEO, Josh DeMauro. So there are three bosses here for Kevin Feige, which means one of these three jackasses has to be the one that canceled Wonder Man season two. And by the way, maybe canceling Wonder Man season two was the right move. I don't know. I don't know the inside thing. I'm not saying that. They're all jackasses. But there is only three answers because Kevin Feige within Marvel has all the authority within Marvel. And there are only three people in human existence that has authority to tell him yes or no to something he wants to do in Marvel. That's Alan Bergman. That's Dana Walden. And that's the new CEO, Josh DeMauro. Because one of the things that I don't like the notion of or the idea of is going into a new era in Disney where Kevin Feige doesn't have the freedom to do what Kevin Feige wants to do. Now, listen, Kevin Feige always took his marching orders from Alan Shore and Bob Iger. Absolutely. He always had to check in with them. He always had to get approvals from them. But for the most part, they just gave him guidance, set a few guardrails, but for the most part, kind of stayed out of his way for the most part. You want to do Wonder Man? Yeah, you can't do it. I think the most likely person in this chain here is Dana Walden. I think that's the most likely person being the chief creative officer of Disney Entertainment, because I don't know that Alan Bergman would step in and tell Kevin Feige not to do something without the blessing of Dana Walden. Now, even if we put on our Sherlock Holmes caps and figured out which one of these three told Kevin Feige he had to cancel Wonder Man. It doesn't answer the question why. Why would one of the more uppity ups, one of only three people who actually has decision making authority over Kevin Feige, come down from Mount Olympus and tell him, no, you can't do that. And I think there are two potential reasons that are legitimate. Potential reason number one, they may have told him not to do Wonder Man season two. Because we want to keep Destin Daniel Cretton's dance card as open as possible, because we don't know how long we want to wait to make a Spider-Man five. That would be underhanded, yet understandable, because don't forget, Destin is still working on Shang-Chi, and he's got that ninny nanny bim bombs, whatever that natural neutral. Boy, whatever it's called. What's the actual name of it, Sean? Naratu. Naratu. Right. So he's got that. Probably mispronouncing it, but yes. Yeah, well, not as badly as me. Not as badly as I'm mispronouncing it. Naratu. Which is just, again, set the all-time opening weekend box office record. So that is one potential reason why one of those three may have told him to cancel it. The bigger potential reason could be that Josh DeMauro, Dana Walden, or Alan Bergman have decided, you know what? It's time for Marvel to focus just on the movie. Marvel has never been, I don't think many of us would argue that Marvel has never been better or firing on all cylinders more or at peak performance more than when they were just putting movies in theaters. And it could very well be that under new CEO Josh DeMauro or new CCO Dana Walden, they made the decision, you know what? Let's not have Kevin and his team dividing their attention between making series for Disney Plus. So guys, there have been some whispers going around the last couple of weeks that Disney may be making moves to just tell not only Marvel, but Star Wars to not worry about making original shows for Disney Plus anymore and focus more on making their movies, which will in turn serve Disney Plus better when those movies then go onto streaming. So who, who I say told Kevin Feige, he couldn't make Wonder Man season two is not as big of a question as why would they do it? And if it is guys, either one of those two options, I may or may not agree, but it's understandable wanting to keep Dustin more available to make another Spider-Man understandable wanting to move away from Marvel making Disney Plus series at all. Anyway, Rob, uh, you heard the comments from Justin saying, if it was up to Kevin, we'd still be doing a Wonder Man season two, which immediately made me sit up and go, Whoa, wait. So my question for you, two parter here, who do you think told him he couldn't do it? Uh, and number two, probably the more important question. Why do you think they would tell Kevin Feige not to do a Wonder Man season two? Well, I, I honestly think it comes straight from the top. I think Disney has a new chairman, you know, that's taken over. from Bob Iger and our new chairman, I think, has a mandate. G'day, I'm Justin Wolfers, host of the Platypus Economics podcast. If there's one thing I've learned from a career teaching economics, it's that your life is shaped by economic currents you'll never see. A single price tag can explain things a thousand experts can't. People who understand economics, they make better decisions in their careers, their finances, their relationships and their communities. And I want that for you. Listen to and follow Platypus Economics, available now wherever you get your podcasts. Across all platforms, if something is not pulling its weight, no matter how good it is, no matter how critically acclaimed it is, if it's not making money, if it's not bringing in subscribers, we're not going to continue with it. And it has nothing to do with anything other than that. And I think, on the other hand, though. dance card available, I think is probably a good idea, but it's going to take a long time to have a new script written for a new Spider-Man film. And I think that Wonder Man, the problem with Wonder Man is it's a wonderful show that not a lot of people watched. And I think it was originally conceived as a one-off when it was so well received. Well, it didn't help that they dropped the whole thing at once. So they never even gave it the opportunity to build up an audience over weeks. Yeah, I think they're not going to do that. It's like, it's got to be, you know, they've seen, they've taken a lot of hits. Mandalorian and Grogu, not great, you know, and they're looking at Marvel. They're like, if this stuff is not performing in a way that it justifies its existence, as good as it might be, we're not going to revisit it. We're not in the business anymore of trying to build our audience, especially with Marvel and Star Wars. It either works out of the gate or it doesn't. And I think that's. That's ultimately what they're looking at. Because look, you know what? As you pointed out, Wonder Man was a one-and-done, originally a one-and-done limited series. And so I thought it was tremendous. I loved it. I thought it was great. Everybody gave it their A-game. But I get it. I understand it's not for everyone. It was also kind of a one-off in the MCU. But what I do think it has, now that it's brought some awards buzz, and it's respectable, it's something that they can always point to and go, we want shows of this quality that have more mass appeal. I don't think, you know, there's a lot of people talking about how two different things were canceled. I mean, it has nothing to do with race, because they're coming out hard with Black Panther 3, which is, they'd rather go, look, Black Panther 1 and 2, that's a $2 billion franchise. They're like, bring on Black Panther 3, let's go make that. And they've got one of the greatest, exciting, new, young actors, you know, playing the new T'Challa's son, you know, David Johnson. I don't know if it's Johnson or Johansson. I'll say David Johnson. I mean, he was, that guy in The Long Walk was so good. Yeah, he was great. And he was great in Alien Romulus, the way he could change, literally change himself into a different, you know, artificial person. He's an incredible actor. And he's going to bring something really. He's special to T'Challa. And I just think it's money. I think it has to come down to the fact. And I think even Kevin Feige, he's like, he probably had that mandate. He's like, look, I understand you can have all you want, Kev. You've got total autonomy. But what trumps your power is money. And at the end of the day, we'll give you. I don't think that means he's not going to try new and interesting things in the future. I think they're pulling back their biggest franchises. From streaming and they're going to all into theatrical. And that's what it is. That's it's simple as that. That's what I think. What about you, Sean? The same two questions for you. Who do you think ultimately was behind telling Kevin Feige not to do Wonder Man season two? And like, could it be one of the reasons Rob and I have suggested you buy into one of those? Could it be another one that we haven't brought up yet? What do you think? Yeah, I mean, I piggyback on what Rob just said about probably goes all the way up to the top of. They're trying to get back to a time period where everything Marvel released was this water cooler conversation that phase three. Every movie was an event, even if you Captain Marvel that people weren't crazy about with its legacy made a billion dollars. Everybody saw it. And so there's this time where everything they did hit and it was big. And then something like Wonder Man was intentionally very niche and the people that watched it loved it. But it had very small appeal to a broad audience. Yeah. And you just contrast that with, all right, we gave this guy Wonder Man and we got awards and we gave him Spider-Man and we made a billion dollars in four days. They're just ultimately they're a business. And you go, this is we were historically the water cooler franchise that everybody saw everything and talked about. It wouldn't be a part of it. That's what we want to do. That's what we want to be. And so we got to make some hard choices. And I think that comes from the top. I think some of it also is kind of what you talked about with Destin being one of their top guys. And clearly, Kevin Feige has thought that for a while because he was supposed to do King Dynasty. Yeah. And then when his concession prize, like, we're not going to get you an Avengers movie. We're only going to give you the follow up to Spider-Man No Way Home. Like, this is someone they obviously tremendously trust. And then he delivered. He did it. And it's confirmed, right? He's one of your top guys. And do you want to have him work on something just to get awards? Or do you want him to be one of the guys that is free to help get this thing back to the excitement, the momentum of phase three? That makes a lot of sense to me. And I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I don't know if you saw this news story that Disney Plus partnered up with TikTok. Yeah. And so soon TikTok content is going to be on Disney Plus in the near future. They're going to give assets to creators if they opt in. And you can just see, like, I don't know if there's any connection at all, but that is Disney Plus moving in a specific direction. And also canceling some other things in a different direction. And one of these costs doesn't cost money. One of these things cost millions and millions of dollars to create every episode. So is there a connection there? I don't know, but they're both related to what will be the content on Disney Plus in the future. All right, guys, the question is for you. Destiny Daniel Cretton, the showrunner of Wonder Man, has come out and said it wasn't actually Kevin Feige's decision to cancel Wonder Man season two, asking us. Well, then who did and why would they do it? We've given you some theories. Do you have any of your own? Whatever you guys think, jump down to the comments section below and let us know your thoughts. All right, guys, with that all down, let's move on to this, shall we? Well, the latest twist and turn has just come about in the proposed and upcoming maybe Paramount acquisition of Warner Brothers. You guys will remember that, of course, there's 12 states led by California and New York that brought a lawsuit to try to stop it. They filed an addition injunction, a temporary restraining order request for the court to stop and prevent Paramount from actually completing its merger with Warner Brothers until the trial. They were successful in doing that. Now, though, we have a trial date. You see, Paramount was asking for a trial in September. However, they didn't get it. It was September, November, one of the two. They didn't get it as the judge ruled that the trial is going to happen all the way now in 2027 in March. Now, here's the thing. This date is not good for Paramount for a couple of different reasons. Number one, you guys remember we've talked about it a lot. When the clock strikes midnight, I believe on September 30th, every day after September 30th that the deal between Paramount and Warner Brothers is not closed, Paramount has to write a $7 million check. I mean, they don't have to actually give it till later, but in essence, they have to write a $7 million check every single day starting on October 1st. Can I get that? Can that come to? Can that come to me, please? Can I get a little bit of that Paramount late money? So, because, of course, Paramount in their deal with Warner Brothers was, hey, if we don't have this deal closed by October 1st, we're going to give you all this money to the tune of $7 million per day. This trial isn't even starting until March. By the time this trial gets going, Paramount is going to owe the good shareholders of Warner Brothers $1.2 billion. That's what that's going to add up to. But that, guys, isn't even the main problem. That's not the main problem for them with this March 2027 trial date. The problem is this. As we talked about before, the magical date is June 4th. On June 4th, Warner Brothers head David Zaslav manifests the contractual. power to say deals are and if he does that paramount is then contractually obligated to not sign a seven million dollar check over to warner brothers but a seven billion dollar breakup check without even doing the breaking up it can be david zaz laugh on june 4th it says deals off it's not me it's you get out of here oh and on your way out the door give me seven billion dollars so paramount needs to have this whole thing done and wrapped up but here's the problem with the march deadline or with the march trial date this is why paramount's kind of screwed is because this trial is going to go into mid to late march maybe even early april not likely but a a a a at least mid to late march okay fine but after that it's going to take a little time for the judge to come back with a decision that will probably be in early to mid april that just leaves about six weeks until that june drop dead date so you might be thinking to yourself john that sounds like they got time right no follow the roadmap with me here so september 30th that ticking time bomb of seven million dollars per day starts going off so that's already costing paramount unspeakable amounts of money on march 2nd the trial date starts that's when the state's attorney general's california new york and a bunch of other states by the way not only the state's lawsuit but the wga's lawsuit is running concurrently with it so that gets started as well both cases under the same judge so that's when it gets starts all right so mid-march the trial concludes the judge is saying it's going to be about 12 days so probably about two and a half weeks then it's going to take a little bit for the final decision and the statement of facts it's not going to be until late april or maybe even may that the court actually gives its decision all right so now we're already in may maybe before the the court gives its decision okay but early may is still soon enough what's the problem well here's the problem this is where it gets really sticky for them if the decision comes in in may and the states win or if the wga wins either of them can win if either one of them wins it's over game over but john paramount can appeal to the state and the state can appeal to the state and the state can appeal to the state oh we'll get to that in a second but if either one of these two win if either the states win or the wga wins against paramount it's over okay let's say for a second that paramount not only wins the case against the wga but also wins the case with the states well then here's what happens the states or the wga can appeal and then the states win the case against the wga and then the states win the case against the wga that appeal process guys two to four months two to four months now i'm not a mathematologist but two to four months after may puts them way past the june 4th deadline way past the june 4th deadline so while they're sitting with their thumbs up their asses waiting for an appeal process to get started they're not going to be able to appeal to the state and the state is going to be able to appeal to the state and the state is going to be able to appeal to the state june 4th hits the calendar and david zazlav saunters into the room with a top hat and a cane and says f off and give me seven seven billion dollars and that's over it's done so here's what it'll happen if and this is a huge if if paramount wins against the states and if paramount wins against the wga even if that happens the immediate thing that's going to happen is both the states and the wga will be able to appeal to the states and the states will be able to appeal to the states are going to file for an appeal and the first thing they'll do in filing for that appeal is file for a stay pending appeal motion that just means hey courts just like you gave us a temporary restraining order can you also please give us a stay meaning that paramount's not allowed to go ahead with their merger until the appeal is done and at that point it's game over it's game over if the wga wins it's game over if the states win even if they lose it's game over if the states lose it's game over if the stay of pending appeal gets granted but let's say for example what happens if paramount wins against the states paramount's wins against the wga and they win in a motion to stop a stay pending appeal let's say they win all of that which is highly unlikely but it's possible it is possible so let's say that all happens so before the appeal gets started paramount goes ahead and merges with warner brothers while they're waiting for the appeal this brings up a problem known in the business world as unscrambling the eggs so even without a stay unscrambling the eggs closing after closing is highly risky and difficult here's the thing what unscrambling the eggs means is that once you merge two companies together it becomes a titanic herculean feat to try to split them back up again you it will ruin paramount if they go ahead if they win against the states and if they win against the wga and if they win against the motion in the states and if they win in the motion against the wga and if they don't have that stay granted and they go ahead and merge with warner brothers while waiting for the appeal they put themselves at risk at literally financially ruining themselves if they have to then later two or three months later have to undo the merging it will financially cripple them so and if they don't go ahead and merge while waiting for the appeal well then june 4th hits the termination deadline warner brothers discovery has the option to opt out and cancel the deal and collect seven billion dollars at which point somebody may say oh but wait maybe warner brothers doesn't exercise that right to terminate it maybe dad david zaz laugh comes in and says you know what paramount don't worry about it we're gonna give you two more months here's the problem with that as pointed out in the wall street journal at that point warner brothers shareholders sue david zaz laugh so there's not going to be a lot of choice so guys when you sit back and look at this cobweb of all these things all because of the date that the judge set and that june 4th deadline and having to win not one but two trials and then if you lose either of them you're done and even if you win now you got to face a stay which pushes you past and an appeals process that pushes you way past the june 4th deadline anyway their road to victory which is something i refer to a lot the road to victory here for paramount still exists but it's narrow it's so very narrow and i think that's the reason why david ellison just came out publicly and said while he's still saying i'm confident we'll win no he's not because he also said very publicly we're very open this is he said this we are very opening to settling this of course you are because that is your only way out and so at this point is it game over no but there are about 35 different paths this goes down that leads to paramount's defeat and maybe one that doesn't can they still win it's yes yes they can is it likely at this point it's very unlikely and you guys know that's a big change of tune for me because i've been saying forever that i think there's going to be compromises made and there's going to be a little bit of give and take but at the end of the day paramount's going to own warner brothers i simply don't believe that anymore i believed it for a i don't know that i believe it anymore anyway sean we've now got this ruling came down that seems just like a detail the start of a court date but that court date puts insane amounts of pressure on paramount and puts their backs against the wall and i just don't see a lot of ways forward from them here what is standing out to you the most about this entire convoluted situation and what do you see as paramount's potential way out here well every week the most stressful time of the week for me is when you give the update on every new obstacle that paramount is facing it's just you just read it off i'm like oh dear this is awful a month ago it was all of the different threats all the different lawsuits and then the last two weeks it's been just that narrowing window of like there's just so little they can do to be victorious there's only a series of bad options and maybe some luck at some point in time but i like you said i just don't see a clean victory in any of this i don't see a way out of it um no matter what it goes really bad is what it currently looks like. So I'm sure they're just looking for whatever is the easiest way to have the fewest losses and save as much face as possible. But it just looks like this thing's coming down, falling apart. You know, I've seen some people in the live chat asking a very reasonable question. It's like, well, wait a minute. Why did Paramount not see this coming? Why would they put themselves in a situation like this? There was a great article that actually came out in Variety this morning where they wrote about that very specific thing. And what they wrote in that article was basically that the Ellisons were under the firm belief that once Trump's Department of Justice and the Trade Commission okayed it, that it would be clear sailing. They really wouldn't be running into any more obstacles, which obviously did not end up being the case here. There was a lot of obstacles still in the way. And again, there is still. By the way, the other little thing in this is that the guy financing all this, for the most part, Big Daddy Ellison, he's losing billions of dollars by the day right now. If you're following Oracle, like Oracle has been dropping like a rock lately. I think they said David Ellison or Larry Ellison's personal value has dropped $120 billion in the last 30 days. So, I mean, at what point do you tap out? At what point do you say no more? I don't know. Again, Rob, there is. I want to be very, very, very clear about this. There is still angles here where Paramount may come out of this and have Warner Brothers, whether it's a settlement with the WGA, whether it's that very, very small road getting through the legal process, there is still a way that it could happen. I just see it being very improbable at this point. What about this whole thing is standing out to you the most and what do you think is the ultimate outcome here? Well, in addition to all of these shenanigans, I keep reading about how our stock market is about to melt down, China syndrome-like, because of the AI. Everyone's gone into AI, which is going to be the worst investment in the history of American business. So, I think that also is out there looming. And I think that, like, look, we have so many powerful forces that are commanding so much capital that are really. They are trying to negotiate a lot of stormy financial seas and surf in on the big wave and catch those cheering beachcombers that are like, wow. And I don't even know what that metaphor was supposed to be. But I just think that the. The. It is. I think it's very precarious all the way around. And I think that Oracle, it used to be like, hey, we're going to do this merger. Larry Ellison came in to back his son's play from the very beginning. They thought it was going to be, I think, a much easier process than it has been. And I think that at some point, you've got to cut your losses. This has proved to have too many headwinds against it. And I. Again, it's hard for me to say because I just. I know so. I know so little about this kind of thing. And in terms of there's elements that I don't even understand that they're trying to grapple with. At this point, I don't even know why you would want to go in with this merger because it's going to be, regardless, so expensive. What's the upside for anybody here? And I don't really understand it. I would cut. I'd cut and run. By the way, someone in the live chat, and I should address this because, I can see why it causes confusion. Jamel is saying, John, the June 1st agreement was put in place for the appeals process, as in, unless the states already have an emergency stay, the deal closes on June 1st. No, what happened was, for those of you who were thinking about this too, when the states were granted the temporary restraining order stopping it, there was going to be another hearing in two weeks after that to determine whether it goes into force for the full length. Instead of facing that defeat, Paramount agreed to not close the deal until either the conclusion of the trial or June 1st, whichever comes first. So some people are thinking, oh, that means that Paramount can just close the deal with Warner Brothers on June 1st, regardless of what else is going on. That's not the case. If Paramount wins, or if the WGA wins, then they cannot close the deal on June 1st. That becomes null and void. If Paramount does win against the states and they win their case with the WGA, but either side files for an appeal and then gets a stay in place of the appeal, it doesn't matter about that June 1st date. They won't be allowed to close on that June 1st date. So that June 1st date kind of becomes a catch-all for all other things in absence, but it doesn't come into effect or into force. So the June 1st date is actually really quite irrelevant at this point, unless a lot of dominoes happen to fall in the right order for Paramount that then makes it applicable. But right now, it's simply not applicable. And this is another good question, because I've seen some other people ask this. John, as Zaza backs out, can Paramount countersue with the claim that the reasons it didn't close by June date is because of litigation? That is a great question, but here's the answer to it. In the contract that gives Warner Brothers the ability to back out on June 4th includes the stipulation of litigation going on. It's actually written into the contract that, hey, if we don't close this deal by June 4th, I'm paraphrasing, even if it's because we're being sued and the courts are holding it up, that still gives WB the option of backing out on June 4th. Because the reason that's the case is because Paramount was making assurances to Warner Brothers about their ability to close. That's why there's this ticking $7 million fine. They told Warner Brothers shareholders, accept our offer. It'll be smooth sailing. There'll be no problem. We'll be able to close this deal and you'll get your money. We're so confident that if we don't close the deal by September 30th, we'll pay you $7 million a day. Oh, and if we don't close this deal by June 4th, which is ridiculous, you guys can kill the deal, even if the delay is because we're getting sued. So it's a very, very good question, Benji. But the answer to it is because it's already in the contract that that allows them to kill the deal because of litigation. So it's a pickle that themselves in. Not a pickle without a lid. They may be able to get out, but we'll see. Guys, question is for you. What do you think about all this? The judge has set a trial date and it ain't the early date that Paramount was hoping for. It's going to be all the way down into March of 2027, which is going to make it, let's say, extremely difficult for Paramount to get this thing all wrapped up by June 4th and David Zaslav's date when he can cancel the deal and take $7 billion from them. Whatever you guys think is going to happen here, jump down to the comments section below and let us know your thoughts. All right, guys, with that down, let's move on to this one final thing here, shall we? Well, Spider-Man Brand New Day, as we've been talking about here, set the all-time opening weekend box office record this past week. It also set the all-time highest grossing, Monday, in box office history on Monday. Oh, and by the way, it also just grossed the biggest Tuesday box office in box office history. And that has led to a number that is rather astounding. According to Variety, Spider-Man Brand New Day has now passed $1.15 billion. And in doing so, listen to this, Spider-Man Brand New Day has become the highest grossing film of 2026, in seven days. Spider-Man Brand New Day has become the highest grossing film of the year in seven days. As we now go over and take a look at the chart, of course, the Odyssey, which will soon join the Billion Dollar Club, is down at $911.4 million. Then the $4 billion films of the year so far. The Super Mario Brothers Galaxy movie made $1.012 billion. Michael made $1.016 billion. Toy Story 5 is at $1.068 billion and counting. Now, for example, it took Michael 47 days to just hit $900 million. It took the Super Mario Galaxy movie like almost a month to hit a billion. Spider-Man Brand New Day has become the highest grossing film of the year in one week. Seven days. It hit that mark. I feel like, I feel like like this is just stupid like this is like every single day for the last week we are talking about spider-man brand new day doing something that has never been done before i don't know if we've ever had more than halfway through the year a movie come out that became the biggest film of the year in just seven days i mean maybe avengers endgame did it i mean i'd have to look back but even if it has been done it doesn't happen often and this is just absolutely like staggering to me because this is jill schlesinger from jill on money managing your small business finances shouldn't feel overwhelming zero brings your accounting payroll payments and analytics into one simple platform with automated features that clear away the daily busy work you get a quick detailed look at what's coming in and what's going out you get a quick detailed look at what's coming in and what's going out and I think that's what people are feeling. and I think that's what people are feeling. And that's what people are responding to. It's that. And then, not to be outdone, this movie in a way is really about what so many young people are going through. I mean, they're not all superheroes that have had their memories wiped from collective existence. It's that. But I think a lot of people today feel that sometimes in a way that they have, people are lonely, they're alienated against their fellow human beings because they sit at home on social media. And I really think that this is a zeitgeist movie in the way not a lot of other movies are. So here's a question. That's what's happening. Here's a question for you guys. At this point right now, Spider-Man Brand New Day has made $407 million. Now, obviously, it won't maintain the pace it's had until now. But that doesn't include yesterday. Well, right. But just for the official numbers for now, we're going to say $407 million. Okay. The all-time number one domestic box office is Star Wars Episode VII, The Force Awakens. No film in history has made more money at the domestic box office than it. And it made $936 million. Have a chance at topping Star Wars Episode VII for the biggest domestic box office of all time. Rob, yes or no? I think the potential is there. it made another in the last two days spider-man's made about 95 million dollars monday and that's monday and tuesday chris or sean what about you yes no does it hit it what what what odds would you give it of catching star wars odds i don't have to run some numbers on that one but i mean at the moment i'm not betting against this movie uh just like it is performing in an unprecedented way an unexpected way that is so far beyond what we were thinking even last week we were talking about 800 million whoa bump the brakes 800 million what did it didn't do 800 million it did 900 million 930 million and so it's performing so far beyond what we're expecting it would be unwise to bet against it at this moment in time now force awakens had the christmas corridor which gives you usually particularly long legs and spider-man has about two weeks until school starts back up for a lot of people and so you the it'll tail off really quickly when people are back at school and you're not doing your tuesday discount tuesdays um but that still gives it two weeks of being red hot box office the one thing i think is working against it and i i'm going to give it a 40 chance which is a pretty good chance i'm going to give it a 40 chance here's the big thing working against it and it's that amazing thing we've been talking about everybody is right nobody is waiting to watch it a second and third time they're all doing it right now i have a feeling that by day 16 and 17 most of the people who love this movie will have seen it three or four times and at that point i wonder if it's going to be a very gradual decline and then suddenly this because everybody has not only seen it but everybody's seen it multiple times because they're all rushing out to see it immediately so that's the one thing working against it but i guess we will wait and see guys question is for you what do you think about this spider-man brand new day has become the biggest film of the year in seven days how much bigger can this thing get whatever you guys think about all this jump down into the comment section below and let us know your thoughts all right guys with that down it's time for us to move on to the most important part of our show which is of course taking your live comments and questions but before we do that we are going to take a moment and thank the warrior poets for being here today of course writer director producer mr robert meyer burnett thank you so much sir for being here it's got it's you know what this this whole summer movie season has been crazy so it's fun to talk about it been so good and of course the great sean chandler sean thank you so much for being here man we'll talk to you again next week thanks for having me and guys it's now time for us to get on the important stuff which is of course what you have to say so we're going to go over now start taking your questions that you've sent into our super chat just so you know i did turn off the super chats about a half hour ago because they did get all filled up so let's not waste any time and get right into taking your questions here shall we and i believe we're starting off with ketva who writes what's up campy i've been watching your show for a long time i've been watching your show for almost nine years so thank you so much man ever since the transformers the last night review that was a terrible movie i wonder if you've heard any early reactions to lanterns since it comes out next sunday all right so the the the official reactions and reviews have not started coming out for lanterns yet however uh rob and i were both talking yesterday or two days ago rob and i were chatting two days ago and both of us have heard from you guys for the last nine years from people who have seen it that said they really knocked it out of the park like like none of them are saying i i didn't hear from anybody saying at least this is the greatest superhero tv show of all time i didn't hear that but from just a couple of people that rob and i have heard from is that they've knocked it out of the park so that's two or three people what do a hundred people think not sure but i'm hearing good things so far hearing good things so far we'll see all right next up we got sam writes hey john greetings from finland ah home of yari curry uh how big uh a risk is it for warner brothers to release lord of the rings the hunt for gollum on december 17th 2027 when secret wars is coming out the same day i'd say it's very risky but i i'm just gonna tell you my experience okay i don't know that anybody else has had the same experience as me i will only tell you mine this year now i i'm looking forward to hunt for gollum i mean andy circus i mean he was literally peter jackson's assistant director he knows this world at least on the big screen as well as anybody and i'm i'm looking forward to it right jumping up and down with excitement no but i'm looking forward to it then at cinema con this year they gave a little presentation on it and it wasn't much but i the hair on my arms was standing up i i was getting tingling sensations all over the place just seeing these wide scape shots of the mountains and hearing the voices of gollum and all this kind of stuff and i'm like i haven't felt that kind of excitement in a while for something lord of the rings now look is it a risk yes and here's what i'm willing to bet i bet that if doomsday works out and both avengers doomsday and dune 3 make tons of money everything's going to stay the way it is secret wars and lord of the rings hunt for gollum are both going to come out on the same day however if doomsday comes and like doomsday does great but dune 3 gets buried in it then i think you're going to see that they'll move the lord of the rings film i think it's going to be a big deal but i'm going to bet that if doomsday works out i think they're just going to hold the course though and wait to see what happens with doomsday and if it works out great they'll think they'll have the next doomsday you know lord of the secret wars or whatever it is they call it uh so but yes is it risky it's risky but let's see what happens once doomsday happens all right next up uh delayed critique rights what do you think spider-man brand new day chances are to make one billion at the domestic box office no other movie has ever done it could make it like i said i'm giving it a 40 chance to beat uh star wars episode 7 again i think the thing the engine that is driving the rapid money making right now on it might be the thing that slows it down a little bit later because once everybody's seeing it two three four times immediately once people see it two three four times i think you're going to see it drop off a bit the question will be what's going to happen if doomsday doesn't make it will the pace be at that point i'm giving it a solid 40 chance i'm going to stay with that solid 40 chance all right x-men super fan rights favorite or favorite alfred hitchcock films you know it's funny i i've said different ones before but last year on our movie meetup tour one of our stops for our movie meetup i think it was in new mexico anyway i think it might have been in in albuquerque we did a screening for our movie meetup tour it was my first time ever watching psycho on the big screen never seen psycho on the big screen it was a remarkable experience it was a remarkable experience um and while i've said when talking about hitchcock films before i've mentioned a bunch of different ones as being my favorites and i've always kind of thought saying psycho is like a cop-out one right blah blah but after watching psycho on the big screen i'm gonna go with psycho all right uh machan 151 writes hey john just watched the thing and loved it i was a little confused in regards to the ending do you think childs was a thing at the end well you know what here's the thing recently carpenter came out when recently i think it was like two or three years ago correct me if i'm wrong in the live chat but i think carpenter came out and definitively said one of the two of them was a thing like one of the two remaining guys was a thing and i can't remember which one he said but i remember he came out and like answered it definitively at the end and i can't remember which one he said they're saying yeah he did say that and i i just can't remember which one it is though but yep one of them was one of them certainly was all right uh two of them were a thing and i can't remember which one he said but i can't remember all right uh two of them were a thing and i can't remember which one he said but yeah he did say that and show writes ted lasso is back baby keep up the good work job when does it actually debut guys in the live chat when does ted lasso actually come back if any of you guys know in the live chat somebody write it in i i can't remember i know it's soon but it's not today is it ted lasso's not back today is it nobody seems to know in the live chat already oh august 5th so it is today oh no no no now somebody's saying the 14th now somebody's saying last night. Oh, no, it is today. it's out. Oh my God. I didn't even know it was back yet. I knew it was coming soon. All right. Well, I know what I'm doing tonight. I'm watching Ted Lasso. Cause I'm with you, man. That show is so good. I mean, I don't think I don't like it as much as shrinking, but Ted Lasso is so good. I'm so excited that I didn't even realize it was back already. All right. Thanks for that, man. Uh, Jay Mash writes one of two should Nick Cage appear in ghostwriter. Fuck no. Uh, and I love Nick Cage, but hell no, he should not, uh, as a Sam Elliott type role. No, no, no. Keep that gimmick nonsense out of here. Keep the gimmick nonsense out. Listen, I love Nick Cage. I even have an appreciation for him as Johnny blaze. I really do. I'm not going to say that those movies were good, but I have an appreciation for him in it, but no, I don't want to see that gimmick there. There are some movies in some circumstances where a gimmick like that totally works. I don't think this is it. I don't, I do not think Nick Cage should be, uh, and I don't think he would want to come back anyway. All right. Christopher Brickner writes after a great Monday and Tuesday holds at the box office. Do you think Spider-Man brand new day will outgross Avengers end game at the domestic box office? Yes, I do. Uh, yes, I do that. Whereas let me bring this up again. This is the star Wars number domestically 936 million. This is the Avengers end game number. I do think it has like an 80% chance, 85% chance of catching the Avengers, uh, end game number. Yes. Now after that, it still has like another 75 million to go just to catch star Wars episode seven. Uh, so that's where I think it drops to about 40%, but I, I would give it an 80 or 85% chance of, uh, catching up to Avengers end games, domestic number. All right. Uh, Johnny got lost rights. Ding dong. The witch is dead. I know it's too soon to declare the deal dead, but it seems like fate that this comedy of errors is what kills the acquisition. Yeah. You guys know right up until about a week or two ago, I'm terrible keeping track of time, but right up until about a week or two ago, I was firmly of the belief that, you know, both sides are going to make some compromises. Paramount will give a couple of things up. They'll do some wheeling and dealing, but I've said for a year at the end of the day, Paramount will get this deal closed and Paramount will acquire Warner brothers. They'll make some compromises, but it'll get worked out and they'll do it. As of just a couple of weeks ago, though, with all these recent rulings, I, I no longer think that, uh, I've had my mind changed. New information makes you reevaluate your opinions, right? So uh, this new information leads me to be very skeptical, very, very skeptical. Uh, when it comes to their ability, this might be again, it's not over. It's not over. There are paths to victory, although they are few and they are small, but it's, it's not over yet. It just looks like it's over. All right. Real writer writes, Hey, John, now that MJ and Ned have forgotten Peter, well, that happened in the past. I'm not sure if that's true. I'm not sure if that's true in the last movie. Do you think they're going to start introducing Harry Osborn? I actually really don't think they are. I don't think they are. I mean, listen, a Harry Osborn character is totally on the table and you could do that in the next movie. If you want to hell, if you want it to, by the way, you don't need a Spider-Man movie to bring in Harry Osborn. Harry Osborn isn't just a Spider-Man. He's predominantly a Spider-Man character, but he's a Marvel character. Now here, here's the trick though. Being a Spider-Man character means Sony would have to give permission, but Sony makes these movies with Marvel. So, um, it's possible. I don't think, I don't think they will, but it is possible. But again, keep in mind, you can bring in Harry Osborn in any Marvel movie you want. He is a, he's a significant player in Marvel as a whole, not just Spider-Man movies. So there's that. All right. Jay bling writes. So right now the Ellison seem happy lighting all the cash on fire, but at some point something's got to give, could we see a scenario down the road where Paramount gets, uh, gets put up for sale? No, no, I don't think so. I, the only, the only way I see Paramount going up for sale is the extremely unlikely scenario that Paramount wins both the trial cases wins the motion for a stay merge. With Warner brothers. And then later in appeals is forced to tear itself apart, which would be devastating to them financially. Maybe under that circumstance, but honestly, I don't see them selling Paramount. Uh, I think David Ellison wants to run a big studio. I think David Ellison wants to be a big Hollywood player and I don't, I don't fault him for that. Who wouldn't he gets, he's trying to live out a dream. And I, I don't see them selling Paramount unless a lot of things go wrong. I don't see them selling Paramount. All right. Good question. Jay bling. Next up, rich reviews, rights, thoughts on the following trailers. Eight 24 is misty green. Haven't seen it. Uh, eight 24 is prime time. Haven't seen it. Neon's bad Lieutenant Tokyo. That looked great. That looked really great. Um, and onslaught and the stunt driver. Haven't seen the trailers for either of those. Yup. Haven't seen that. The one I saw was bad Lieutenant Tokyo, but I have not seen the trailer for any of the other ones yet. So I can't give my thoughts on them. All right. Which reviews rights. Apparently California governor Gavin Newsom wants the AG to settle this out of court because Newsom has big ambitions. It doesn't matter what Gavin Newsom wants. He has no authority to tell the attorney general what to do and not to do, which is one of the reason why the Trump will foreskin, uh, administration is such a joke because everybody knows that Donald Trump just uses all the branches of government as his own personal little toys and they all just do what he tells them to do. But in proper government, the AG does not answer to the president. The AG acts independently in interests of the law. So it doesn't matter what Gavin Newsom wants. I mean, I get it. Uh, Americans living under, uh, a little push boy who thinks he's a King, uh, acting as if he's a King will might make you think that, Oh, doesn't the governor then control what the AG does? No, he does not. That's not the way the law or the constitution or any of that is supposed to work. Uh, anyway, that said, uh, next up, Joshua writes, hope Tom Holland gets comfortable in that Spidey suit. Well, I mean, here's the thing. You got to keep this in mind. Tom Holland now and Zendaya have all the money in the world. I mean, do I think they're coming back for Spider-Man five and six? Yes, but they don't have to, they really don't have to. They have all the money in the world now. Um, now the other thing is Zendaya has a lot of work outside of Spider-Man Zendaya has like, like her Spider-Man is just like one aspect of her career. She's had big, like, uh, critically raved movies and award-winning television and all that kind of stuff. I mean, she's got a very healthy wide career. Tom, not as much. I mean, he did Odyssey. Yep. Uh, but he's done a bunch of things that did not work out so well, but even, even that being the case. And I think Tom is very, very talented. I think he'll be fine. He'll be totally fine, but, um, they don't have to do Spider-Man anymore if they don't want to, but yes, I do think they will both be back for Spider-Man six and Spider-Man seven. Uh, all right, next up, uh, you're Nostum, uh, writes in I've made a fantasy game like fantasy football for upcoming movies in 2027. Your squads are actors, directors, composers, and get points based on their performances. Unfortunately, I've only got like three friends who were probably joined this project. You know, it's funny. I've got, um, one of my viewers has, who has been a viewer of the show for over a decade, like going back to movie blog days and whatever. And, oh, I'm freezing on the name of it, but, uh, he also actually put together like a fantasy movie league that was really, really actually quite good for that. There are different versions of that out there, but Hey, full kudos to you, man, for trying a project like that. And I hope you're able to get that off the ground and running, man. That's that's exciting. Okay. Next up, uh, we've got a geek who writes, Hey, John, are you not going to STLV? I don't know what that is, uh, doing anything for, Oh, Star Trek 60th anniversary. Thanks. Nah, I, I, I don't go to most conventions. Uh, like I'll go to big, wide, huge general ones like cinema con comic con. ventured off every once in a while to a Star Wars celebration now and again. but other than that like i'm a massive supernatural fan i don't go to supernatural conventions i'm a big this fan i don't go to convention of that so and and star trek is nowhere near as important as star wars oh my god oh my god i can already feel the hatred but to me to me as as much as i like star trek it's not star wars uh no i don't i don't generally go to like individual property conventions or anything like that so uh no i will not be going to that although rob is rob's going out to that tomorrow as a matter of fact i think he's actually hosting a panel out there tomorrow so if you are going to that keep an eye open for the panel that robert meyer burnett is going to be uh moderating all right uh next up uh sora fan sends in a $20 super chat thank you sora fan appreciate that man who writes uh checking in and i can say i've seen spire five times in all formats 40x was a thrill ride even saw the doomsday trailer in 40x going to be awesome too and screen x was also a a marvel in itself especially those wide city shots well you know what i didn't realize sora fan uh rob filled me in on this earlier today i didn't realize that spider-man brand new day actually shot content in the movie specifically for screen x i never knew that before so i might actually have to run out to a screen x tonight i've never been to a screen x and i've been thinking about doing it and after rob told me about the spider-man thing i might actually try to run out tonight or tomorrow if i can find a seat um or two seats together for me and ann i might actually run out and go see it in a screen x tonight so yes i'm i'm looking forward to doing that anyway thank you again for sending in a $20 super chat man that's incredibly generous of you dude i'm looking forward to doing that and i'll see you in the i appreciate that all right dan the fan writes never did i think i'd see spider-man yanking the punisher never mind gonna move on from that sorry for you guys watching the show hopefully in the audio podcast you did not get the uh spoiler all right next up uh gkb beetle writes saw a brand new day last night uh favorite spider-man film ended in a way that i'd be satisfied uh if this were last mcu spider-man film do you think hulk remembered peter no but i i i know i don't think hulk remembered peter but i do think oh and again can't really go into it can't go into why i thought that i mean you all know hulk is in the movie he's in the trailer so i can just say uh no i don't think hulk remembered peter but i cannot elaborate as to why all right um sora fan also writes in again says oh by the way got my imax tickets for brand new day and can't wait yeah i've not seen it in imax yet i think i'd like to go see the imax all right dia writes uh what's in dune 2 that makes the best movie in 10 years everything everything i'm not going to sit here and do a full 30 minute breakdown of the greatness of dune i've reviewed it i've talked about dune 2 many many times it is the greatest motion picture made in the last 10 years so i'm not going to sit here for a half hour and go into it all again all right dia writes are there any comic book films that are all-time great films to you that's a great question um i think well i mean like right off the top of my head i think the dark knight i think logan um i think um there's a real argument to be made for captain america civil war uh yeah i'd say there are three or four of them to me now when you say an all-time great film do you mean in a list that can only hold four films or when you're talking about your general ideas of all-time great films that there could be 30 or 40 of them because when i think of an all-time great i think of a collection out of the 100 000 movies that have been made a collection of 30 or 40 of them and do i think if i had a list of that like 30 or 40 of them that i would put a list of all the movies that i've ever made and i think that's a really good argument to be made for the dark knight uh for logan and probably a couple of others if i thought them so yeah i would think there would be a couple that would fit in there into that list of 30 or 40 at least to me to me i think a couple would fit in there all right dia also writes spidey's weekday grosses suggest it can beat episode 7 domestically even endgame trailed episode 7 day-to-day spidey is ahead yes but don't forget this you're going to have to wait until the end of the show to see if you can beat episode 7 domestically even endgame trailed episode 7 day-to-day spidey is ahead yes but don't forget this it absolutely can but also remember that every year that passes movies become more and more front end loaded what i mean by that is the movie going audience when they have movies they're interested in seeing in theaters they're going earlier and earlier for example avatar you know the the highest grossing film of all time spider-man had a 360 million dollar opening weekend avatar is the highest grossing film of all time any of you guys know how much it made on its opening weekend 200 million nope 150 million nope 120 million? Nope. 100 million? Nope. Made like $70 million, somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million opening weekend. That is to show that, you know, the further back you go, like movies inhabited the theaters longer. If people had a movie they really wanted to see, they didn't necessarily feel the urge to get out and see it opening weekend or even the first four or five days. With every year that passes though, statistics show us that movies are becoming more and more front-end loaded and that people are seeing them earlier and earlier. And while you will still find exceptions of movies still making real money after eight weeks or nine, that still happens, but not as much as it used to. That's what the data shows. So while it is true that Spider-Man Brand New Day is currently paid for, it's not as much as it used to. It's not as pacing ahead of, say, both domestically for Avengers Endgame and Star Wars Episode VII, which is the all-time domestic box office leader, don't think for a moment that that means it will cross it. Pacing changes. Again, I say that as somebody who is telling you it absolutely has a chance. It absolutely has a chance. 100% it has a chance. But don't think that it's because of, just because it's pacing ahead of it right now means it's going to get there. That's just one thing, just a caution for us to keep in mind. All right. Well brought up though, Dia. Well brought up. All right. Devante writes, it's because the Disney Plus era of television series is over. Well, if you're talking about the Wonder Man thing, maybe, maybe. Listen, I think Marvel's place is on the big screen. I think Star Wars' place is on the big screen. But that being said, Andor is the best anything Star Wars related in 40 years. There hasn't been anything nearly as good as Andor in the universe of Star Wars since the original trilogy. There's the original trilogy, then there's Andor, and then there's everything else. But I am still one of these guys of the belief that Star Wars' true place is on the big screen. That Marvel's true place is on the big screen. And I've loved a few Marvel shows, but I think Marvel's true place is on the big screen. So maybe, maybe Disney is just going to get away from making originals. Maybe. Maybe they're going to get away from making originals and just use it as the place where all their content then goes to after it's been in the movie theaters. I think there's a lot of success to be had for them if they did that, but we'll, we'll see. We'll see how it all evolves. All right. Thanks for that, Devante. Free Art Productions writes, is there a chance that when Steve Rogers returned the Soul Stone, he had Tony Stark's soul reborn? When you take the Soul Stone, you give a soul. So he, so the reverse should be true? No, no, that's, no, that's not happening. They're not doing that. And I, and I don't think that's how it works. It's a soul for a soul. If anything, the taking in, um, in Avengers, the taking of the Soul Stone costs Black Widow. If you return it, logic says that should be the return of Black Widow, not some other random person who died somewhere in the universe. So I don't, I, I mean, look, Free Art, anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anything's possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They can say whatever they want, but do I think that's, if there's any realistic possibility that that's what they're going to do? I, I honestly don't think good theory, but I really don't think that's something that's, uh, on the game board. right now so to say and all right guys that will do it for today's installment of the john campion show thank you guys so much for being here making our little dumb show a part of your day it's incredibly appreciated big thanks of course to sean chandler robert meyer burnett huge thank to the thousands of you guys in the live chat even still right now appreciate you all so much for being here and a big thank you to you guys who sent in the super chats number one because you gave us fun things to talk about but number two you supported our channel as you did it and all of us involved with the show thank you guys so very much for your support uh make sure you guys come on back tomorrow it's gonna have jonathan voyko and 3c films chris parker is gonna be here as well we've already got a couple things lined up for us to talk about tomorrow i'm very excited about it looking forward to seeing you guys then that will do it for me for now guys thanks a lot for being here my name is john campia and until next time my friends bye you

This success reignited a long-standing Hollywood tradition where top filmmakers celebrate each other’s achievements, such as the Russo brothers’ tribute to the Spider-Man team, underscoring the industry’s collaborative spirit. FAQs

The message is part of a long-standing film industry tradition where successful filmmakers acknowledge and celebrate record-breaking achievements by their peers, fostering camaraderie and respect among creators.

Henwick stated she passed on the role to protect the character's value and her own career, avoiding a subpar return where she would only be a background character with no narrative arc.

No, according to Destin Daniel Cretton, the show’s co-creator, Kevin Feige did not cancel it. The decision likely came from higher-ups in Disney, such as Dana Walden or Josh DeMauro, who have decision-making authority over Marvel projects.

The shift could be driven by financial strategy, with leadership prioritizing theatrical releases to maximize returns and focusing on franchises with broad appeal and proven box office success.

If the merger proceeds before the June 4th deadline, Warner Bros. can terminate the deal and demand a $7 billion breakup fee, and any appeal process could push the timeline past this date, risking financial ruin.

It set the all-time opening weekend record and became the highest-grossing film of 2026 in just seven days, surpassing previous records and outperforming other major films in both speed and total earnings.
