You go on the today show and you present that work to the world, to America, in the morning, the first thing they see when they wake up with their full church. The third hour and the third hour. The third hour. My ass hits her and watches three hours of today's show. I told you that. Then I want you to picture heading over to chat with me for two hours. Averiche. Welcome in. How are you doing? So last we spoke, it's kind of confusing because last we spoke was two days ago in terms of that I saw you and spoke to you two days ago. But in terms of people that are listening to this podcast, the episode that we recorded two days ago when I said, I'm not going to make it out of the today show alive. Came out actually after the today show as well. So that's really confusing. But as of in this moment, I just came from the today show. It makes it makes sense to go. We recorded on Monday. Right. When I was bald. Yeah. When you were bald, that was two days ago from where the today. So Monday and bald. Yeah. Monday we record. You see we traveled to New York. Yep. Bricked us today show on Wednesday, which is today. Oh, yes. Tuesday we travel in New York. We sleep. We wake up. Bricked us today show. She heads right from today show to record. So it's Monday, Wednesday podcast. But like both pre both posts today show, which is where both are posted a show. The first one for your recording. The first one I had not yet done the today show. And my feeling during that was that I genuinely in my heart believed I was going to die. Like genuinely die. Yeah. On stage. I did not believe there was life after the today show. Was there live audience? So I legitimately said goodbye to my cats. Like I did not think I thought this was the end for me. There was no live audience. There were a lot of camera people. Yeah. So there's probably like 10 10 people in the room. That's a big podcast. But let me I want to explain to you like a little bit about like my history with public speaking and being front facing so that you can really understand like the severity of this. Okay. Yeah. When I was a little girl. Take me all the way back. I'm going to take you all the way back. I loved being on stage. I loved being in the school plays. I wanted to be an actress. Did the plays all through middle? Do you want me to take that tag off for you? I'm going to get it. But keep talking because you're in the. Okay. Did the plays all through middle school? Then we get to high school and my mental health is starting to starting to deteriorate in a different way than it had before. And I was watching Jay Leno. Yeah. This was probably like 2010 or 2011. And I just had this thought. I don't remember who was on Jay Leno. But I thought never in one million years could I put myself in that sort of position and be on a stage like that. And then the next morning I woke up with the biggest pit in my stomach and just I had developed late onset stage fright from just receiving that episode of Jay Leno and feeling like that looks to me like the end of the world. Like I can't ever do something like that. And so for two years after I saw that episode of Jay Leno, I didn't get up on stage ever. I quit all the plays. It was really sad because that was stuff that I love to do. My mom had to call my teachers and say don't call on her because it was literally I couldn't even answer a question in class. Like I just had a permanent puke lump in my throat. And I just kind of like was pretty quiet for two years. And then you know, I kind of used myself back into it. I could do like a class presentation. But like I didn't really see myself ever like getting back on a stage again. Sure. So that's why when we started the podcast and you were like, I want to do live shows. I was like, I ain't going to happen champion. I recall ain't going to happen champion. But you know, eventually few years happened, worked up to it. But keeping my Jay Leno was still in the back of my mind. Jay had that much real estate in your brain. That is truly like within OCD brain. Like you have one thought and it just doesn't ever go away. You just ruminate on that one thought over and over again. And for whatever reason, mine is just seeing Jay Leno up there and thinking, nope. Like that just seems like the scariest thing in the world. I have no idea. I just remember seeing him doing a talk show and thinking like never. Like that feels, that makes my stomach feel really horrible and bad. And I feel like I'm going to throw up just watching Jay Leno up there. And then so the book tour stuff, that was kind of like really shocking that I was able to do that even. And so when I got this email to do the today show, I was like, you know, first person I thought I was Jay. And you released Jay. And I said, you know what? Like up to this point, like I have been so scared to do every single thing. And I have done it. So we are going to do this today show. We're going to push ourselves. And for the past month, I have not slept. Yeah. All I have thought about was the today show. It really, it almost, it drove me to madness almost. And I just didn't see a world that where I would survive it. Like, I truly believe I was going to be the first person to projectile puke and faint and die on that stage. But weirdly, I woke up this morning and I was just like, okay, like it, whatever happens, like what happened, you know, and I did take a beta blocker. Oh, good. Because you know, up until this point, I had been too scared to actually take one. I had been taking them for practice, like in moments in my home, but I had never taken one like when I need to like do something front facing. But I did take one today. And I do think it helped. But I kind of just got there. What did I do? Did you notice? Did you feel it? Or was it like, so usually like the panic for me when my heart starts to race and my palms start to sweat, it works me up even more. And I'm like, so I am having a panic attack. And then that just makes the panic attack come even faster. But the beta blocker stops those physical symptoms from happening. So I don't get the like, okay, well, my hearts are already racing and my palms are already sweating. So the panic attack is starting. So I missed that part, which was really helpful. Like I was still nervous, but like I didn't have the physical symptoms making me think like it was even worse than it was, you know. So then I kind of really was just like surrendering myself once I got there. I was like today's the day, like Hunger Games vibes when you're in the when you're in the when you're in the thing that shoots you up. It's like, all right, well, I mean, like today is the day. And you know, I got up there. And Jason Sedacus walked off. I said, hello, sir. And he seemed pretty chill. So I was like, all right, all is good. I sat down with the hosts. Craig Melvin, Dylan, blanking on last name, just for just a second. I will go back to you and outroker. And I, you know, I said to them, I said, listen, like, what will you do if I faint? And they were like, oh, you're not going to. And but they did say they would cut to commercial break, which really helped me. And so once it started, Connor, and they introduced me, I can't explain what happened in my body. You're so professional. I said, I think I love this today show. Yeah, yeah. And I just kind of started talking. Yeah. And Craig was being LOL, like, making me feel so comfortable. I heart, Craig, like so much. And it was a lot quicker than I had imagined. I had a lot of talking points because I was recommending books. So I had a lot of talking points for each book. But they after like my first talking point, they were like, all right, next one, because I think they were running behind. So that made me feel even better because I was like, I really don't even I mean, I have to say everything that I wanted to say. And then I cracked a few jokes too. Even I'll get into why I couldn't watch, but like crack a few jokes. And then guess what Craig had said to me, uh, favorite guest of the day. Wow. Well, you know, Jason today, because I just left favorite. I don't know favorite, everyone loves it. Favorite guests of the day. Well done. Then Owl gave me big hug. You hugged Elroker. Yeah. And then Craig looked at me dead in the eyes. He said, come back anytime. I walked, did you say, did you say, what does that mean? What does come back any time I said, okay, I'll be here tomorrow morning. I also like once Craig was wrapping up and he was like, we'll go to commercial break. I just looked at the camera, I will be right back. And that wasn't my line. I think I did. I will need it. We'll need to pull the clip. No, we don't need to watch it. No, I need to see it. You haven't seen anything. No, I just saw what everyone else posted. By the way, I couldn't go. They run a very tight ship there. Even though Brooke has like, do the golden ticket to like go whenever she wants. Like I was not allowed in the venue because they only, yeah. So Brooke had to bring her team, um, fuck them. But yeah, so I was like hoping to watch. I'll tell you why I think I know I couldn't want. I wouldn't be able to watch somebody who was nervous do something live. No, Brooke, I can watch you do something there. Yeah, I went to the, yeah, I went to your New York shirt. Like, yeah, no, I wanted to watch. I was up stage fright four people. I was up. I was awake. I texted you. Yeah, yeah, you did. I was at a hotel last night. Yeah, because I, yeah, I'll tell you why. So your flight landed well before mine. Um, my original flight. I moved back and then it got delayed two hours. So I ended up landing at about midnight and I wanted to download something to watch. So downloaded that like the Idaho murders documentary that they just put on. Netflix and it's like a limited series. And like I'm, I watch stuff all the time, but like something, obviously it's like unsettling because it's, I guess I never really doubt about like something being like real and can happen to. And so I was landing in New York. Yeah, and I go, there's not a world where I go to my underground apartment tonight. Could not go. You should know how to tell. Got a hotel on a hotel tonight, where? Hit level 13 on hotel tonight and like right next to my apartment. Wow, your apartment's not bad. I couldn't go into it at night at midnight. Wow, are you back there now? Yeah, that's why it was a little bit behind coming here. Got it. But then my hotel obviously didn't have like live TV. I just had like information. I'm not having this today show. No, it's like all delayed and it's like all the new TV is now. And in hotels are like local news and then modern family. Friends are the office and then like something on discovery. That's like not in my wheelhouse to watch. Like not even like mummies. They're doing like Arizona, you know, it's like stuff that. And then, yeah, so I couldn't watch it. So I texted you and then I'm like, I'm looking at like Hannah or our agent. A story and I'm like, oh my god, cool. How long was the segment supposed to be five minutes? But I think it ended up being closer to four because they had gone over. Dang, I want to see it. You want to, I mean, we can walk in, but let me have to tell you something before it starts. Something something happened. And it's not that bad, but I got really thrown off because at the end, they were supposed to ask me about Phoebe, but I'll said, so tell us about your podcast. Oh my god, Phoebe. So I was like, oh, shoot. And so then our big break, I should have said something about it. I do think I oversold undersold our podcast. That's a pretty significant amount when I said, that's nothing. Oh, I should say, I said, that's nothing. Let me tell you about my book. I want to apologize. I love our podcast. So, and that's not like, I don't want to follow up your today's show then with like, I don't know. I'm just back to my, my feeling about the, that it's a really good example of like, there's no like story to expose and like, no message should be told where it's like, you know, it's just like a tragic, it's a tragedy and like, I'm confused why they made a documentary about it. - I was about to say, aren't you very anti-documentary when I come to tragedy? - I like, forgot. 'Cause it's just like an interesting case, but usually like, when you do it, it's like, or when you read, or when you watch these documentaries, it's like, oh, there were all these tragedy things and we want to tell the stories of the, and it's like, there's actually no story being told. It's just like a horrible thing that happened, you know? And it's being monetized. There must be a plus side for like, the families of the victims, because like, I really, it's like hard to grasp that we're all like, ooh, like, let's sit down and watch the documentary about college students being murdered in the sleep. Awareness of what? - Well, literally, like-- - This was my daughter, you know, and like, she was a person, and like, remember her, and also like, this man was a monster. But I don't know. It just feels a little-- - I bet it feels different to every family. - Niferious. - I bet each family feels differently. - Yeah. - 'Cause I know, like, I have seen some of these murder documentaries where the parents, they want to be there. You know, they want to be on TV, or they want to-- - They want to be sharing their story. Yeah, on the documentary, they want to be speaking about their child, they want justice for their child, they want people to be aware of the case. - Yes, this is already-- - No, aren't they reopening everything? - They're reopening it because he's like, withdrawing his guilty plea. He's saying that he was, like, convinced to plea guilty, and it was like a cover-up. No, he's like, no, it's crazy. That's what I'm saying is, there's no like, we want justice, we want this, it was like, a failure, a failure, a failure-- The justice system didn't work, and it did work, and it's like over, so it's like, it must be painful to like bring this back up. I don't know, I don't want to be like, I don't want to talk about that any further, but I turned it off. I was like, let me just not do that, but it did stick with me long enough to get a hotel room last night. - Do you want to talk about incest? - Jump right into incest? - I was telling you the conversation. - We might, like, yes, I obviously want to preface this with, so this is something I, there was a silence at a party a few weeks ago. Can we preface by saying when we, yeah, okay, just go ahead. - Well, I have a lot of disclaimers that I will make. - Well, we asked, we asked on, I wasn't sure how Brooke was going to be still standing after the today show, so I put on online today, give us some deep dives to go into, because we both enjoy deep dives, and I said, please, no, mattress firm, like, conspiracy, triangle, things, no Denver airport. And incest did come up a couple times, but like in different ways, Brooke has an incest deep dive. - Well, I don't have an incest deep dive. I have just like a conversation that has come up a few times in my life about incest. And so there was a silence at a party a few weeks ago, and I asked the question, which was, if a brother and a sister came up to you, and let's say they, like, didn't grow up together, and they came together when they were like, they were like 18 or something, okay? And they came up to you and like, we are brother and sister, full, both we have the same parents. We are in love, and we are getting married, but we will not have kids. - I mean, I'm not gonna hang out with them, you know? - So, yeah, but also like, at what point is love love? Like, what is wrong? - I'm not gonna be an incest sympathizer today. - Listen, it's obviously like everybody's gut reaction is like, that's not okay. - No, but yeah, but your gut reaction should be, that's not okay in the people that are, the brother and the sister. - But here's where it gets difficult is that homophobic people, and I'm pretty sure that they don't do it. Professor this by saying y'all know that like my issue is gay rights. So when I have engaged with homophobic people before and fought them on their belief-- - On their home turf. - On their home turf, on their views. They always bring this up 'cause they're like-- - They bring up and-- - They bring up when I'm like, well love is love and then they throw at me like, okay, well what if a brother and a sister wanted to get together? And they always throw that at me. - So at what point are you like-- - No, well the issue is definitely like-- - The kids, right? - Yeah, having kids. - So I'm saying they are not having kids. You can imagine how the conversation was going. - Yes, yeah, I mean, it must have been-- - Oh, it was amazing, people loved me. - What? - I was incredible. - But I'm saying I used to have this really homophobic person that I unfortunately had to interact with quite a bit. And it was like the bane of my existence and like my life, my life's mission for a very long time was just fighting with this person. Like I hated him with every fiber of my being and we were just fighting all the time. And he would always-- 'cause I would always be like, who, why do you care? Like it's fucking weird that you care this much. And love is love, blah, blah throwing everything I had. Like it affects you in no way. Like who are you to blah, blah, blah, blah? And then he would always hit me with, okay, well, what if? - Then then then then then then then. - And then I was kind of just like, and then I would always be like, 'cause I just was like, then I think that's fine. - Oh, bro, no, nothing. - So I don't know if I was doing-- - You know what, you know what? - You know what, you know what? - No, you, we know your heart. And it's because of that damn school that led you to-- - It's like that damn school. - Your Quaker school that like took you so far in your direction that it actually go, hang on, hang on, come back. No, but it's actually a really hard argument to have. - No, you just say, well, the gay people aren't hooking up with their brother as far as me, hooking up with their siblings. That's a different conversation. - No, but then the person, like let's, he would be like, you would say it makes me uncomfortable, right? If the reason, if they're not having children, you would say it's just wrong. And then the homophobic person would say, well, I think this is just wrong. And it's the same thing.
