That's how we're going to get to short into that stick. I was never missing the Netherlands first couple of segments here today are going to be brought to you. Get you up to speed. If you haven't been following the women's game for a long time or if you just are a little forgetful or maybe weren't watching or don't remember off top of your head with the most recent Soulheim Cup results. I've been like what has happened there going to run through a few of those. We spoke earlier this week or earlier last week, I guess it would have been with team USA captain, Angel Stanford after her captains picks were made so it's a couple week old interview as you're hearing this. We talk about a couple things in there. Go ahead, Randy. >> Sorry. It was right. It was prior to the event going in Boston, so just to kind of set the stage. >> Yep. So we talk with her for about 15 minutes or so just about some of her picks and captaincy and things of that nature and then on the back half, we're going to go through those rosters, break down the US captains picks. We've broken down the European ones in prior episodes, but I'm sure we'll talk about some of those as well. Go through a bunch of questions. Make our official picks and score predictions as well as a lot of other stuff to get into. But Soulheim Cup history, can I run you guys through kind of the somewhat recent history? Get you up to speed on where things are at momentum wise going into this one. >> Please. >> So moving very quickly through the first couple of decades. Soulheim Cup started in 1990, the US won eight of the first 11 through 2009. A lot of US domination there. Then Europe went back to back in 2011 and 2013. I would say the fun kind of starts in 2015. This is when it gets spicy. It was played in Germany. Karen Koch was the captain of Europe, Julie Inxter was the captain for the US. Europe was up eight to four after three team sessions and famously in that last team session this finished on Sunday morning. Suzanne Patterson and Charlie Hall are playing a match against Allison Lee and Brittany Linsacom. The match is all square on the 17th hall. Allison Lee's got a birdie putt to win the hole from about 10, 12 feet. Lee misses the putt low. It goes maybe 16 inches past the hole. I mean, the most gimme of gimmies that you could ever have in match play, there's no world. You would ever make somebody putt this putt. Charlie Hall is kind of standing near where Allison Lee is standing, and the caddy start walking off. Charlie Hall starts walking off. The official score shouts out that the hole is tied and Allison Lee goes and scoops the putt and that is Suzanne Patterson's music. She comes up and insists that it was not conceded. It was so shitty. I watched it back thinking like, man, maybe there's some gray area there. It was so shitty. One of the shittiest sportsmanship moves I've ever seen in golf. And as I said, Europe wins that match, goes up 10 to six in singles. So what happens the rest of that Sunday? The miracle of, I don't know, I don't have a phrase for the miracle in Germany, but Angela Stanford, the now captain of the U.S. teams just stomps on Suzanne Patterson and singles. Ball don't lie. Allison Lee wins her match as well. The U.S. comes storming back. They needed to win eight and a half to three and a half to take back the soulheim cup. And they did exactly that biggest soulheim cup come back in history. Jorina Pillar made a do-or-die putt on 18 to keep the U.S. alive and Paula Kramer clinched it. Suzanne Patterson would go on to apologize the following day after they lost about what happened there. It should never apologize. It was so bad. It was so, so bad, but it was good because it just ignited this rivalry and true, not hatred, but true feelings got the golf world involved. It did because everyone had an opinion on this one. And I guess I hate to say this, but it has been like some of the most memorable stuff of the last several soulheim cups have been kind of some of these controversial disasters. The shuttles in 2024, you know, there was a rules issue in 2021, Toledo featuring Nellie Corda, Madeline Sagsdram, things like that. Those are the things that kind of stir people up and get people, get people talking about it, which I guess is a good. The security garden Spain, I mean, major drama there. I agree. I was going to say that that 2015, you know, going through the singles, God, TCR girl, Caroline head wall lost six and four to Michelle, we were, yeah, I can't have that. That was, that was what allowed for her to have the proper experience to get, you know, to, to be the last line of defense, we wanted her on that wall. Yeah. What was that 20, 23, 23? Yeah. I think that's a great point though that that TC made like this event needs some, like on course controversy, I think in, in, you know, it's, it's shitty for Allison Lee. Like it's, it's, it's not good sportsmanship. So I like, I definitely agree with all of that, but in terms of like rising into the public consciousness and making people take note, like you need stuff like this. Yeah. I, again, I watched it back, they can like, yeah, they're had, I mean, I missed her memory. How bad it was. Oh God. No, no, no. There's no way it's that close. Like it is truly, it was a trapment. It was, it was a, it was some bullshit. I, so 2017 goes back to the US. It's in Des Moines. It's a packed house. The US dominates 16 and a half, 11 and a half. They hold serve at home. The US is back, you know, 2011, 2013, those were flukes. We go back to Glen Eagles. And this is about as close and exciting of the Soulheim Cup as you're ever going to get a team event as close as exciting of a team of it as you're ever going to get very close through all the team sessions. And of course, ends eight to eight after team play and the singles. There's a four hour, 43 minute singles, like the whole broadcast from singles is available on YouTube. Like if you ever want to flip something on to have on in the background and relive one of the great days of competitive team golf history, flip that on because it's awesome. It's incredible. There's some huge, huge moments. It comes down to the final match, Marina Alex versus Suzanne Pedersen. Again, went back and watched this. I forgot Marina had about 10 footer to retain the cup. That one missed. There's a, it flips back. Ali McDonnell has a putt that keeps the, just she has to make that on 17, just to keep the US alive. She makes it. And then it's back to Pedersen on eight on 18 has an eight footer to win the Soulheim Cup and walk off her career. It's a door. It's a win or lose putt. That's the thing about these putts as well. Like you will not win the Soulheim Cup if you miss this putt and you will if you make it and she just pours it right in the center. Epic celebration on the green. So she gets her revenge from the shittiness of 2015. I don't know who the revenge was actually on. Maybe it's just for herself. But you're at 0 and 2, by the way, and you can have it. So 2011. This is the first one we had attended in Inverness. It was a tough showing. 2021. What did I say? 2021. I meant 2021. I was at Enverness with tough showing for Pat Hers team, Europe won 15 to 13. Leona McGuire famously went 40 and won. was just an absolute dog that entire week. We did get to go this, the celebration that night. It was very, very, very fun. It was, it was, it was a great, great night to play pool with Dame Lorde Davies. We all were taking sips of beer out of the solarium cup. It was pretty amazing. This is like peak tracksuit Charlie too, right? Just not giving a shit. Yeah. She just sat over there on the table, looking at her phone the whole night. Yeah, Georgia Hall was not, not really participating. This was, this was when Matilda Castron, I don't know if you guys are, you know, she went three and one and it was looking like she was going to be a stalwart for the next, you know, decade plus. So Europe has won back to back. Now we get to 2023. You guys went over to this one in Spain. US jumped out to a four nothing lead, but everything ends in a tie. And that one, Carlota Segonda won the 14th point for Europe. And that one, I know winners, you gotta snuck up on it. I think we, you're right. Headwall was the, the star of the show that week. I made a joke earlier about the security guard. That was just based off our experience there, the security guard who was guarding the media chow. They, they ran out of water on the course for not only spectators, but players and caddies as well, a little bit of a fire fest, such a worse spectator. So hard to get around. They didn't have really any food on the course. Everybody is walking around with these big baguettes. And they sold out of them by like 10 o'clock in the morning. Bad thing. It's like, it was, it was tough. But you want to talk about drama though. It was the first time I've ever seen people like turn on the media. Captain Lewis turned on us in the, in the media because of a Lexi, Alexi shanked it. This is T.C. Fall. He's getting everybody riled up. T.C. I can't remember who your British friend was. Are you guys are just, uh, or maybe his bob hair. I can't remember it. But, you know, just doing, doing God's work in their T.C. I'll never forget that Stacey was blaming it on the media. Just like asked her a simple question about like, shanking it on the last whole and basically Lexi's like, yeah, I'm not going to talk about that. It's like, well, wait a second. Here's a professional sporting event. I think people are going to ask you about kind of massive failures on a big stage as kind of part of the deal here. Lexi played a PJ tour event leading up to it. Yeah. I totally forgot about that. That's, yeah, I've like, banished that from my memory. But yeah. And then, you know what, Cody, we retained the cup, baby. It was a tie. Yeah. The cup. It was a tie. Neil and I had no clue what was going on. We're like, what do you, what do you mean? Retain? Like we're sitting with like both of us with our hands up. We're like, wait, that's, that's not even possible. Like what the hell just happened? Neil, Neil doesn't know what retain means famously. I say retain the USA. I mean, head, head wall had the most incredible sporting performance. I've ever seen personally. She was, she was in a do or die match against Allie Ewing. Allie McDonald before she got married, going back several years. And I got them trying to find the exact match. But she was like, I don't know what was it like, four down with six to play it felt like. And then one of the last six holes going like six or seven under on the score. Carly, it was just incredible. It was shot after shot after shot down the stretch to then put the the euros in position where Carlota eventually, you know, got the, the point to retain. And he see really a win for us. You don't know my ball has played since, you know, head wall didn't play the first three matches. They just kept her. That's right. She was such a controversial captain's pick horrible form. Susan Pederson was the cat. Like a lot of things come in full circle in Spain in 20, 20. So lean was being a malcontent allegedly. If you want to win three, I, I refused. I will not recognize anyone that retains the cup at home. Like you can, if you go on the road and you tie, like you get to keep it, but if you're at home and you're not, you don't hold the cup, you, that's not, you do not keep solid things. That's more impressive. It's more impressive to lose the cup at home and take it. Correct. Yeah. That doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean, they, they did what they needed to do. No, it's tied. They didn't win. They didn't win. They tied. They tied that. I hate the retained thing. There should be a playoff of some kind. I absolutely hate it. Famously, I'll say this and, and I hope this is the case. This is when we were introduced to Charlie not showing up literally until I could day before the match is start. She runs it based off her own time. So yeah, there might be gallows and, and opening ceremonies and everything, not on her watch. She also showed up to the very first D for morning sessions on Friday, wearing the wrong team outfit. That's how prepared she was. So I was just kind of doing her own thing. And while it was three down was six to play. And then just went nuclear. I will note that into the record. 2024. They play him back to back years to get back opposite the rider cup after the rider cup got bumped a year from 2020 to 2021. So they get back to back years the way the rider cup should be played. US wins this one pretty dominant fashion, 15 and a half to 12 and a half at RTJ. There's logistical issues out the ass. I venue a tough leadership. Yeah, bad shuttles. Just all sorts. I mean, security was a mess. It was, it was not good. It did not go well. The event did not go well other than US domination. Cady's are taking their shirts off after haul outs from the fairway. Megan Kang goes three and a Rose Zang goes four or no. Nelly and Alison Corpus both go three and one LC goes three oh and one Lynn Grant went oh and four. So you're and like the singles on the lat like it was 10 six going to Sunday. And the first five matches were all like complete blowouts one way or another six four. Nelly lost six four to Charlie. Megan Kang beat Emily Christine Petersen six and five Rose beat Carlota six and four. Just yeah, it was just not very entertaining. Yeah. Sunday was there was a touch of drama. You know, LC and Lillia Vue both ended up having their matches. I think Lillia secured the the winning half point for team USA. But to to trans point that the those like final six matches could have gone either way. There was a path to victory for a little bit credit. There's always a victory. They shut the door. So that brings us to today. If you allow me, I think we'll get to our conversation here with Angela Stanford. Here's our conversation from just before the FM championship with US captain Angela Stanford. Captain Angela Stanford, thank you so much for taking time out of what I know is a very busy schedule right now to chat with us about the Soulheim Cup. First of all, I have to imagine big relief having the team set talk to us as as you make final preparations before you head over to the Netherlands. How are things going? What's what's what's there still left to do for you? Well, first off, thanks for having me guys. Yeah, it's it last night was a huge relief, you know, you kind of get them all in one room and you finally have the 12, you know, for more than a year and a half. We've been thinking about getting the 12 and we finally got them. So relief, but fun and yeah, so now it's more just we're kind of we're getting their travel set. Any last minute thing like I need some information from them just for, you know, the things that we're going to do week. So stuff like that kind of like those last minute details. How did when you went about finalizing, of course, nine of the 12 women on the team come via automatic qualifying through various channels, leaving you the three captains picks. I'm curious what type of consideration perhaps the golf course played or certain what attributes did you take that really stood out with these three individuals Lindy Duncan, Roseng, Megan Kang. I guess talk to me about the process at arriving at those three captains picks if you don't mind. Yeah, you know, I think the golf course does play a part of it. I'm really big on, you know, how, how we're going to play the golf course. And first off, Megan Kang hits it really straight. I mean, eight of the last eight seasons, she's been in the top 20 in accuracy off the tee. So that played a role. But Megan was also, you know, her energy, her record. We just can't leave a Megan King at home. Like it just, you know, and again, I'm not worried about her form. Again, we see things that make us believe that she's trending the right way. So, you know, we, I said, she's the straw that stirs the drink. So, you know, we weren't going to leave her at home. Lindy Duncan, you know, look, her putting was really the thing that got her across the finish line. I've kind of said, putting team can mystery. But when we had to start splitting hairs, Lindy's putting was kind of put her over the finish line. And then in the team room, look, she's a mature rookie. She's very aware of who she is. She's not going to, you know, she's going to walk into that team room and be very aware of how she fits. And, you know, when we go over there, I don't need to worry about somebody and what they're doing and fitting into the team room. I think she's going to do it really well, just because of how mature she is. And then Rose, look, if you know anything about golf, if you follow women's golf, rose the stud. And, you know, I think people think when they don't see the results, there's, you know, oh gosh, maybe Rose is struggling. No, Rose was graduating from Stanford. That's a big deal. And she was really excited about that. And she's worked hard for that. So, I get it, you know, I mean, sometimes there are things going on in your personal life. But, once she locked in, she kind of started that slow rise. And we kind of started to see it in Portland. Like, we knew behind the scenes that was coming. But, and we're not worried about that back. I think that's, she played a lot to try to make the team. So, you know, I got it. And I appreciated the fact that she put in a lot of reps to try to make the team. She was doing some pretty serious stuff in those studies, too. She's talking about peace agreements. She was putting together for mock you in, things like that. And a little hold on. She's also like brewing beer, okay? I know, but that was a lot. She was, she was into it as well. There's a balance. No point there. What, Angel, you played on a lot of Soulheim Cup teams. I'm curious, what is a broad question to say? What, what did that experience give you that? What did you store away from those to think? If you, if you thought maybe a future cap and see was, was in the cards for you, what are the lessons you learned as a player that said, oh, I didn't like how that went, who I liked how that went, that you are channeling into your captaincy, both in your selections, how you're putting pairings together, or how you're talking to your team. I'm just kind of curious what comes to mind as things you, you remember as from playing in these that you think will make you effective captain. Well, fortunately, I played in, I believe I played in three at home and three away. I might have informed anyways. I played in more overseas, I believe, but even my Curtis Cup was overseas. So, I think realizing the difference in those team rooms and realizing the difference in those environments and the things that we need to do to prepare as a team to get ready to play on the road. So, there is a big difference playing at home and playing away. I think the other thing that I'm trying to be really careful of and we're kind of working through that this week is, you know, when you want people to start trying other golf balls, like we're gonna have to figure out an alternate shot, there are a couple players that we wanna pair together, but they may play different golf balls. Well, I also don't wanna waste their time. You know, I had a captain one time that was like, hey, I think I want you to play with this player so I went and played with a ball a whole week. I was at home just trying to get used to it and then I never even practiced with this player, never even played with this player. So, I'm trying to be very careful when, you know, when I tell them they're gonna be paired with somebody, there's a high probability. And they wanted to know, like, I felt kind of bad last night because I was like, okay, well, who do you think we're gonna play with? And I'm like, look, I'm one of those people that I function one thing at a time. Like, we needed to get the 12 set. Now, I have a week and a half to just start diving into these pairings and Justin Ray is like already 10 steps ahead of me. So, we're in a good spot. Parings-wise, just kind of getting started. So, yeah, I'm trying to make sure I don't waste their time with things like that. You know, Justin, he's been a good friend of ours for a while and I know he's made a big impact on Stacey's teams and, you know, always kind of in the shadows and it's been very nice to hear you vocalize it and say his name and get him out there. How, when did the decision, I guess, for you be made that like, he's a person that I would like to have around on my team and then kind of the impact that he's had as you've gone through, putting everything together, leading up to your captain's picks. - Yeah, well, here's the thing. That week is so emotional. You know, I think the thing that Justin Ray does with his statistics and data, he takes the emotion out of it. So, that's really good for a captain because it's like, okay, here's what the numbers say. Whether you want to believe me or not, this is what the number says. And even last night, I kind of threw a pairing at him and I'm like, I'm already in love with this pairing and he's like, I would never do that. And I'll just shut. It's like, well, dang. So, you know, I'm very emotional too. So that's really good for me. And I sold him, you know, for when we had to redo, you know, every soul home cups different. And when I had to, I went to the LPJ and I'm like, I, what do I need to do to sell him to you guys? Like, I need him because I am emotional and he is very factual. And he can give us, you know, pairings. And I'll be like, okay, well, that's not gonna work because of what we know about these women. So it's a great partnership and you've seen it more in the alternate shot, you know, the four sums. That's really made a difference for us starting in Spain. - Going back, sorry, you had mentioned in your previous answer, there's a big difference between playing a soul home cup at home and on the road. I think there's an obvious thing with like the home crowd being behind you versus over in Europe, you know, that the Europeans get to have that crowd behind them. I'm curious so Angela, is there anything that the common fan, you know, someone such as myself just doesn't consider that makes, you know, such a difference playing at home versus on the road, if you will? - Well, I think you have more of your family usually goes over when you play in Europe, but like all those other, like your secondary, you know, family and friends, like that outer layer that, you know, most people aren't gonna fly over to the Netherlands and much. So, you know, I always say, okay, when we're at home, we can look outward for support, but when we're on the road, we have to look inward. So, you know, you can't be out there looking around, you know, when we're in Europe because you see the opposition's fans, so that's kind of the mentality. Like, we have to look inward and we have to be really sure of who's in that team room. And then you kind of get into like those everyday things, like the food, you're not, you know, you're not used to some of the things you're eating, you can't get the things you like last minute. Like, I made on this packing list that, I mean, the whole page, I had to keep like, clicking down like, okay, well, nine, you know, to make the print smaller and smaller because like we, we have to remember every little thing to pack. - Right. - Because you can't just get over there and be like, oh, I forgot my bars, or I forgot my electrolytes. Like, let's overknight them. So, no, we, it's just sometimes those everyday things that, you know, you just, you can't get. - And then about the team room, I think that's another thing that's a bit of a mystery to fans, again, I'll use myself as an example here and people that are just perhaps tuning in, watching on TV, obviously heard you speak about Megan Kang, she seems to be the leader of this team and perhaps the leader of the team room. But can you just talk about maybe the importance and why that team room is so sacred in a week such as this? - Yeah, I absolutely love a locker room. I mean, you got to kind of think of it as a locker room. It's a place where they can go and look, they're always on. They're always on stage, they're always being watched, they're always being either criticized or praised. And this is the one space that in my mind is very safe. You can say what you want, you can be who you want, same with the caddies. Like caddies know when you walk into that space, they're only certain things you can say and do. But Megan is one of those players that when she walks into the team room, it almost feels like the room lightens up, you know? Like if we're having a tough moment or having a tough day, she has the ability to walk in and just be like, "Look, we're gonna be okay." And, but that's natural for her. It's not natural for everybody. So, I see it as a very safe space for them. To me, that gives them the space they need to kind of recharge their batteries and be around people who are really on their side. You know, when you walk into that room, you know your teammates have your back and that's maybe in a way it kind of recharges on a little bit. - Yeah, it's such a good point. I want to go back to this summer. So you guys made a trip. You went over you saw a Bernartist in the middle of a very busy major schedule for most of your players. What did you learn? Did you think that did you see them, you know? Did you throw some groups out there? They're like, maybe these are potentials that could work together. Oh no, this isn't gonna work based off things that you discovered, learn from the course setup, things like that. - For me, it was more. I just wanted to get their eyes on the golf course. And we did kind of pair on with people that we were, going to see if they could just be around each other on the golf course like personality-wise like can you handle walking around with this person? That was as far as we went with that just because I need them to learn the golf course but I would tell you the thing that the confirmation I got was I knew early on like we did the team function in March and there's an ease about these women like they enjoy being around each other they respect each other I got confirmation on that trip I mean they I never had a dinner reservation and they were mad at me and I was like I didn't know you all wanted to go to dinner every night and I'm like yeah where are we going? I'm like I don't I don't I don't know I'm against someone in dinner reservation yeah so it was nice it was confirmation that they really do enjoy being around each other and and they got thrown a curve ball you know I thought we were going to be riding in carts and we get over there and they got to use push carts and I was like man I didn't say this to him but I was like man I would be so mad if I got over here on a Monday after a major and you're going to make me push a cart and they just they took it in stride they're like oh this is like college golf this is great and I'm like yeah I got a lot of good confirmation on that trip that's great not only embracing the you know the moment but just taking advantage of the opportunity in front of you it's so cool to hear you touched on Rose's back which has you know I think Rose has had a lot going on but she's definitely turned it up and and done did everything that she needed to do which is very you know good sign and again I'm kind of in agreement with you we're very close with Rose and I don't think the back is going to be an issue you do have another health concern though and that's angel and we haven't really seen or heard anything from angel in a bit I don't exactly know what the soulheim rules are is this an envelope situation are you allowed to have a 13th member or or where what you can tell us kind of where we at with angel and soulheim cup so now that the team has been announced and she's been announced on the team it becomes an envelope situation if she would have told us before yesterday that she could not play it would have gone to the next person on points because that's how she qualified look it's almost like the world knows just as much as I do to be perfectly honest I've I've tried not to press angel I think anytime you have a health concern the last thing you want is somebody just nagging you about hey are you feeling better today I know it's been a little bit of a roller coaster not just health wise but emotionally I mean you got to think she hasn't played since the end of June I mean that's that's crushing her emotionally too she wants to be playing so the last thing I needed to do was just beyond on or every single day like are you gonna play ramp of the stress and you know I'm sure that'll be great for recovery yeah exactly so look we're gonna give her all the runway she needs to see if she can play she's been very honest with me and I think that's the one thing that I respect about angel is she's been like hey look if I don't feel like I can play I'm not gonna I'm not gonna take a spot if I if I don't feel like I can help the team I'm not gonna take a spot so she's playing this week in Boston will kind of reassess at the end of the week and you know I think know she's she's going to to the Netherlands you know there's been no word I don't think any speculation that she won't take the spot that she won't be playing she very much is going to attempts to play yeah um I think what's now interesting is how much Angela wants to deploy her right does she try to barrier you know get her out in the one kind of team match before Sunday singles and limit the exposure or maybe angels like hey it it truly was a ton of rust I you know I know she stuck around in Boston was was working on the range you know maybe she feels closer than the scores indicate it doesn't feel it doesn't fill me with a ton of confidence in that pick necessarily she was on that qualifier put the record yeah correct yeah sorry probably you know I think there was a strong Kiara Romero amongst like yeah well I just on points like yeah that's a good point yeah automatic qualifier so sorry sorry do you want to talk about the captain's picks I guess the most interesting thing though coming from that interview which was pre-Boston was Angel played she did not play well and where does that leave things so I don't know we'll see yeah fascinating it gives us something to talk about like it's it's uh like I wouldn't count Angel out um like Angel a lot but yeah I don't you know it was just the right call for so hard to predict so hard you know so hard to predict how your health can actually shake out would be it would have been made easier if the next woman up was an you know uh a cinch right or and again part of this is probably Angel's call and I don't know what kind of you know what kind of call does the captain actually have to say no you automatically qualify but you can't take the spot uh I imagine there's some communication obviously it's going into that but it's not they went pretty far down the list for for captain's picks in terms of where the where the top players you know where the US players rank in the world as it is so it's not like there's somebody that's been completely snub sitting at home it's kind of like the US roster is weak at the very bottom Europe Europe is as well I think both teams are not strong one to 12 which is an element of that conversation as well to say maybe it is worth trying to risk it with Angel because I don't know who the next next person up would be I think on the positive side Rosang played great in Boston finished T4 um she is certainly trending in a good direction so I think that's uh that appears to be a really good captain's pick I think Wendy Duncan is like truly a total unknown you know she's she's relatively old as far as women's golf goes she's a rookie in the Soulheim Cup like the the potential uh variants of Lindy Duncan's performance this week I you know you could tell me hey she's summon something and goes two one and one and and has a really nice week all Allah maybe a Sarah Schmelzel from 2024 I would believe that I if you told me she goes oh three and one and kind of looks out of place and just out of sorts I would believe that I think that's a true wild card and then Megan Kang the best thing going for her she has a seven three and three record in Soulheim cups she finished T27 in Boston you know I her stroke play record this year has been totally met uh but I think she's the type of person that gets juice from an event like this she's a leader in the team room she's the JT JT Memorial Exception yeah yeah I want to believe that she has the potential to really rise to the occasion um but yeah I they're just weren't obvious other choices. So I can't knock the captain's picks, I guess. That's where I met out. Like there was nobody really banging down the door. I mentioned before Kiera Romero, she's unproven, right? The biggest case for taking her is she could be somebody that's involved in the next five, six of these events. And so maybe you just want to take her two years early, get her some experience. But yeah, there's nobody else banging down the door. And let me just throw this in, 'cause I want to hear your guys' reactions. I think the thing that almost worries me the most if I'm Angela Stanford is at the top of the team. Like all of a sudden, Nelly Corda is not in great form. You know, she finished T-50. She didn't have, for her standards, a great week in Canada, her start prior to that. I'm a little worried of like, hey, what type of Nelly Corda are we going to get in the Netherlands? Also, who's the second best player? Like a, not looking at numbers. Who's the second best player on the US team? - They'll see. - Yeah, we'll see. - Yeah, more. - And probably, it could occur and form wise, I would say. I mean, Allison is playing an awesome second half of the year, which I would expect her to have a great Solheim Cup. Big, I am right there with you when we talk about picks, lack of depth here and really the stress that is putting on the top end of this team for a Solheim Cup that traditionally, like the top end kind of struggles to show up. And I know that's asking a lot. Like you ask a lot of the best players to go out there in Solheim cups, not just to get, like we're not asking for four. We're usually asking for like, you're going all five and you gotta show up and you gotta put that meetup on the board. And it's a lot. It's gonna be, it's gonna put Nelly and LC in a tough spot. And I'm excited to see how the rest of 'em, I'm excited for you to get another crack at this. Jen Cup Show, you know, we might not like her, but she like usually shows herself at these team events and is really, really good and shows up for the big moment. And I want to say the same with Allison Lee, you know, when we saw her in Virginia, nobody knew that she was like nine weeks pregnant already and was an absolute dog. And you know, it showed up when her teammates needed her most and did everything that her captain asked her to do when she was literally throwing up every morning, battling like horrible morning sickness. It blows my mind how she can, like how she was able to do that to make her way all the way back on this team, which I think is such a cool thing to see. - I think there's a Lexi-sized hole in this team, like we haven't mentioned that yet. That's kind of, you know, she's played every single one of these since 2013. Yeah, we talked to Angel, the Lindy Duncan one doesn't make any sense to me. - It feels like the girls club, this is the girls club. She's gonna be, she's gonna be, you know, like captain set it. She's gonna be comfortable in the team locker room. She puts well, all of that. Maybe she shows up, but Lindy hasn't had a top 25 since March. Which, you know, it doesn't really have loud traits other than the, the putter. So, yeah, I don't know, I don't think as to how it was eligible. I would have found a way to make her eligible. And I would have, I would have gotten both her and Kiarra Romero on the team. And I would have paired them together too, 'cause they played together in the Curtis Cup a couple of months ago. - Kiarra missed four straight minutes. - She finished T-23, T-62 in the last two events, but missed the Myer cut, missed the Evian cut, missed the Scottish Open Cut, missed the AG Women's Open Cut. Like it's just four of her last six events leading up into this, she emcees. It's just as, it's hard to, it's hard to take a fly or pick on somebody that's not playing weekends. Yeah, and so I don't know. It, I think they're gonna, I think they're gonna, they're gonna ride Nelly, LC and Rose pretty darn hard. Like I would not be surprised if those four don't go all four. So like, and are you concentrating? - It'll be a pretty easy walk. So it'll be an easier walk than the last two venues, for sure. - Can you, is it concentrating too much of your star power in Nelly and Allison, again, as appearing that we saw in Virginia? Like is that, how the team is shaking out now? Do you think about splitting them up for any reason? Do you kind of go, what Team Europe does on the men's side? Compare the Tommy, you know, Rory pairing up and go, go super strong with it. I'll be curious to see how they handle that. - I bet they, I bet they would. You're right, though, and we started breaking down these historically. You know, you mentioned, TC mentioned the Lexi hole, but like the fact that we were this far into the season and this podcast and we haven't even talked about Lili Vu who used to be like the number one play in the world. Not that long ago, who made the clinching putt, not that long ago in Virginia. It was just like nowhere to be seen. These traditional pairings that we have, we're missing so much. The fact that, you know, Allie Ewing, McDonald, whichever name we want to go with is, you know, is no longer playing full-time professional golf, is a massive hole here. Sarah Smezel, battering injuries and poor performance. I always go back to somebody who's like, I was fascinated with that I haven't seen in three years now in Cheyenne night, no clue what happened. I don't even know if she plays golf anymore to be honest. So when you look at traditionals, I think Andrea Rose got to have Nelly and I would say Alice in there with her the entire time. You have to send out to your strong, that strong pairing because you just have, you have no clue what angel is gonna have happened. And I know you guys talked about this already. If they hide, if they make the decision now, that angel's on this team, but they hide her all the way till singles, that's the worst case situation. Like that's where I would be like, what do we even do in here anymore? Outside of protecting, you know, so many. And I understand that she qualified for this team, but outside of like literally hanging three full points on the board, this week is gonna be a failure for Angelian, too. - I, one other person that I would have maybe taken a look at is Yana Wilson, who won the Dow, the Gina Kim, like team golf, partner event, played or bought off on Epson Tor last year, two wins on Epson Tor last year. And then, you know, has played decently well on LPGA this year as a rookie again. But again, like we're straight, like I just, the thing that I don't like about the Lindy pick is it's like, it just feels like charity for a veteran versus, hey, let's do something that we're at least gonna be able to yield a dividend from two years from now or four years from now. - Yeah, it was kind of like Mina Haragay in 2021. I felt like that to me. - Got about that. I think the two interesting names for the U.S., I totally agree, you got to ride Nellie, you got to ride LC, Rose. I am fascinated what Austin Kim, who is a Soulheim rookie, 26 years old. I'm fascinated what she's gonna give and then you guys mentioned, you leave me no being back on the team. I went back, you leave me was on that 2021 team. And interestingly, she got partnered with Brittany Al-Tamare and Mina Haragay. So two women that aren't on the current team. So I'm interested where Yolimi pairs, but I think Austin Kim and Yolimi are two very important players for Team USA that are kind of gonna swing the result. - Yeah. - Corpus too. Like she's played better golf this year. She's, this is her third Soulheim Cup, which is third one in three years or whatever. - Yeah. - That's another, I guess third one in four years, but she played well, like she's got a great record between the two that she's played in. She's won five matches. - Yeah, I'll say this on the Rose Pick. I think people are sleeping on her. I think she's gonna play a lot. I think she's gonna tally up a lot of points and I will not be caught sleeping on that one. I think this is a good is a good course for Leona. I think Leona, like it's it's link style, balls on the ground, all that. I'm excited about Leona. No concerns about our top four. Charlie, Esther, Lottie, and I would consider Lynn Grant one of our top four. You know, I know you guys you guys don't don't believe that. You don't believe. You quit her. I did. I did, but but I like her in these. She went on four in the last one. T.C. She did, but I saw what I saw in Spain. And you know, I think there's something there. She will be ready to rock. And then, yeah, I think Lottie is a great. I'm excited to see what Lottie brings to this event too. I think she's exactly what what this European team needs. Beyond that, it's kind of, I don't know, there's it's I don't know much about Mimi Rhodes. I don't know anything about Nostacia, Nadad, Julia Lopez Ramirez. I was happy to see that one. And then you've got Leona as kind of the lone captain's pick veteran outside. So I think it just I think it all comes down to kind of what they get out of Carlota who has been awesome in some of these was not awesome at Robert Trent Jones. Just not a great course fit for. And then Selene as well. Selene's got to step up and you know, come ready to play. So it's you know, it's I think this is a much more this will feel like much more of a home game to them than I think Spain did from a course perspective and culture perspective as well. A lot of, you know, it just feels to me like more of a European fit than what was largely an American style golf course, Spanish resort. Like it's not like, you know, it's not going to be hard to rally local Europeans to come out and root for a local team like it was in Spain. Like this is a completely different environment. I'm expecting I'm expecting some pretty partisan and strong crowds out there. I would think it's crazy. Me that Ann Van Dam is an assistant captain on this team and not like this, this should have been kind of the culmination or the, you know, the apex of her golfing career a little bit. It stinks that there are no Dutch players on the team, but I don't think that will stop a large hero contingent from being out in full force. Nordquist, head wall, Mel Reed and Ann Van Dam, like they, they will, I think if there's a captain, an assistant captain match, they would, they would beat the brakes off of Angela Stanifer, Kristian McPherson, Paula Kramer, Brittany Lang. Well, you know, Nordquist should be the name in the envelope as well. If there's a I think she absolutely should be. I do like Captain Nordquist, the captain's picks that she made, like you have to take Leona McGuire based on her history in A3 and 1 in the sold-in cup. Yeah, just a total dog. And then she went young, you know, Mimi Rhodes, Julia Lopez Ramirez and Nadad, you know, 24, 23 and 21 years old, respectively. So I think they're trying to infuse some, some young talent, you know, some women that have a chance to be on this team over the next several years. I like the strategy. It's not a great European team on paper. I don't think, but I feel like they assembled the 12 women that almost as best they could. I think it makes for a really interesting match. Like I don't think either team is at like the height of their powers by any means. But there's just very good money. Is it getting dirty? Yeah. Yeah. It's going to make for a really interesting sold-in cup. Let's throw some dirt in people's eyes. Let's get, let's scrap it out. Like it did, it might not be the prettiest effort. And it might not be a bunch of Hall of Famers in this one, but it should be a dog. It is dead even odds for the record. Each side is plus 105 on fandal. It is dead, ass, even odds. So on paper, that would say the US team is a little bit better than Europe, but the European home field advantage is perfectly offsetting it. I only check one sports book for that, but it doesn't get any more more dead even than that. The one that that bums me out that she's not on this team on the European side is Randy, the big German Helen Brim. I know. It's such a miss. Like she just, she just, she's played awful. I was going to say yeah, great year last year. I just hasn't done anything. A great, great to stretch there. She'd been given, she'd been given a lot of opportunities. You, correct. She had a good year, T.C. Not great. That's what I expected by her standards. No, no, no, Cody. No, these some lofty expectations. I do think it's a urine transition for the European team as we have a, you know, Madeline out very, very pregnant, just cannot play. Georgia Hall, who has been a staple for these is going to be interesting to see how they maneuver Charlie around. She still is back playing, but like very much still trying to get back in the groove of things from pregnancy there. Emily Christine Pettersen, who's been a staple on these teams for at least, you know, when the last three iterations, not even close here, battled injury, now back to playing, but nowhere close to being on this team. Albanne Valensuela, who is a big part of Virginia, not close. And then you have your young Swedes, T.C., who you kept telling us they're, they're all coming. Ingrid is just nowhere to be found right now. That's my fear where you're at is you look at the top of your team. And you put, who you put in, you put Lynn in the top of your team as somebody who you need to rely on. And I just do not think that that is either a grit in his eyes. I see how am I going to lose a lot of this one? How do I get out? I think, I think we may be looking at a lost generation of Swedes here. God, I hate that. How's that possible? This was your thing. Like this was the generation. Like, what do you mean this is a lost generation? You know, you know, Sali, I think you said some pretty big things about the US team coming out of Whistling Street. Oh, and I haven't lived that every day of my life. You're right. We're going to live this. It's very easy to find how we, you know, how we get in the, the situations ourselves. Of course, we're going to hold that. We played very well. Lynn played very well where in Spain, better than the record would indicate as well. It was strength on strength. I like that one too. I go to that one a lot. It better than the record show. It's here for that three years ago. TC three years ago. She did. Yeah. I have a question. Sorry. Go ahead, Cody, if it's played all five matches. Well, I think the Lynn that was there is a yes, TC. We know she's fit. But that Linda was a heck of a lot different than the Lynn that we have now. And I think at the time, I don't think we realized that the kind of the dog that my stark was who's turned into a much better player than Lynn Grant could ever dream of me. Yeah, I think, I mean, we would have thought all these years later, the fact that Lynn wasn't getting boosted up, that she'd be in great form for 2026. But maybe not so much. Okay. I have a question for Sally. Sally, I promise this is not a bit. I think it's a legitimate question. If you were ever going to have a playing captain, I feel like this was almost the year for Anna Nordquist. Do you think what do you think of that? And I only asked that she, you know, she was up until Boston where she announced her retirement, you know, still playing regularly on the LPJ tour. She went two and two at the Soul Hunt Cup in 2024, like she still has game. And I think with four rookies, I understand this, you know, I like the idea of this being a transition year and you're kind of looking to the future. I think there might have been a spot for Anna Nordquist, though. I see why you're going. I see why it's a different question than the Kegin situation, I think, is also where you're, where you're headed here. I'm just kind of pulling up her recent results. Finish it. T7 it, Evie on 29 it. Women's open. I hear what you're saying in that like we don't have the same talent depth here. I can come in and play. If you need me to play two four sums, imagine a single match. Maybe I, maybe I could. Oh, I still think the little other qualifiers, I also think on the captains and captains responsibilities on the soul. I'm Cup you get a lot more support from the LPGA tour and the LET that makes it so a lot of the decisions that I think we assume Ryder Cup captains have to make in that ways heavily on them. I think it's kind of, I don't want to say his lesson because of course I've never been in those shoes, but it doesn't seem like it's as grave of a deal accepting the position. Not in headwall, but that's a leader of women. I think, I'm kind of doing this off the cuff again, just kind of pulling up her her strove scheme number. It's in line with somebody you would take, right? It's not like you're going off the board for it, but it's not like somebody that's would be a top four player on the team. I had to think a little bit more on that Randy and to Cody's point, I think it's, I don't really have a lot to support this. But I didn't want to say it, but it does seem like it's not the insanely scrutinized massive time commitment that Ryder Cup captaincy is. It's just not made into being, you know, the Ryder Cup stuff's too much. Like it's just the whole corporate endeavor around it is just too much and it is, you're also not going, as the European captain, you are not going up against like the men's European Ryder Cup team, which is the leadership is our wizards and getting the absolute most out of it. And like the US captain has a big ass role to try to meet the energy of that program. And I don't think that's the same on the women's front, you know what I mean? Like if the US team was like a most mathematical wizards and had a true strategy, we just don't see that. That would take a different level of commitment from a captain than I think is what is currently required. I would consider it. And ultimately she decided not to and I be a fun conversation to have come Sunday night as well. If Europe comes up short, could she have made a difference on this team? She could have said too. Like I think there's different ways to be playing captain. You could say, Hey, you know what? I'm going to play the afternoon, maybe, or like she's got a good four balls record. She's six and four. She's 17, 15 and three lifetime in soul on Cup. Could have said, Hey, you know what? I'm only going to play two matches. Yeah. Right. I'm going to play hard parts of practice. Like that's that's the if you want to like scout your team, walk with your team. It's just the more I think about it, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's one of the other. It's one of the other. I do wonder the other. Like I, if you were going to be maybe one of the best players on the team, if you were Tiger 2019 president's cup, it's a different, it's just a different situation here. I think it would, it just are on the team. I think to, let me, let me, let me twist this around ready. I think you should, if there was a, if you want to put yourself on the team, you should give up the headcaptain C role and fully relinquish, fully relinquish it to whatever your head assistant is and have them be the true captain. And you are now a member of the team. Yeah. I think that's fair. I think that's fair. I just, the, the, the lazy quick analysis, though, is like, who do I have more confidence in going out and getting a point like Nordquist or Nadad or Julia Lopez Ramirez, like, give me Nordquist pretty much every day. Now I might be singing a different tune at the, at the end of the week, but from where I sit right now, it's, it's a pretty easy call. What you can, let me say, hey, you know what, like you're, you're going to knock the captain this year, but we're going to bring a soulheim cup to Sweden in 20, 2030 and you're going to captain there. What you can't convince me is that it's such a good idea to, that, that, um, it's only this person can do the captain C really well and play really well. You know what I mean? Like somebody else can, you just can't convince me that it needs to be the same person. I, I would never see a situation where it would make sense, uh, completely to be like, I need you captain the team and I need you playing is just seems like a silly trap to walk into. Yeah. Mel would have been an easy captain. Turn. Yeah. Like Mel do it. Yeah. If there were, if there was terms put in that said, you are accepting this captain C, but if you first, the sanctity of the event, if you are an automatic qualifier, you are removing yourself from your captain C, you now play because at the, at the first and foremost, this is about competition. Okay. Would you be down for verbiage like that, solid? Yeah. We got name a, you know, a captain in your play assisted captain in your place that can step up and take it over. Sure. It, the hard part is like so much marketing around some of these events is based on the captains too, you know, and a last minute, like flip, there isn't the best commercially for some of these events. These events are big money makers. So I'd argue it would be better. Yeah. You played her way on the team and yeah, but it's like, you know, they love to pit the captains again. You know, whoever the captains are against each other and try to line up rivalries and things like that. But anyway. So bum, we're going to Valhalla. I would not be, I guess it's going to be a fun environment. I feel like it's such a big place, it is a big, big place. It's not a good golf course, but it's got to the steady, like the one thing they do well is noise and like stadium seating and good viewing and they support the crap out of the events. Like, I don't know. That's, that's my. My compromise on Valhalla is like, you can get the golf courses, not my style and not major championship worthy, but you could host a big ass fun event. They're like the OA writer cup was a fun event there. I just think the reason that Des Moines and Inverness, and I think this one are so good is because they're like compact in your kind of like you get the spirit of the place. That's why Finka was tough for Robert Jen Jones stunk because it's just, it's a big ass piece of property and that energy just kind of evaporates into the ether. Yeah. I think it messed with the routing of Valhalla, I don't know, anything else, any, any, expecting any disasters this year, what, what would go wrong? What could go wrong from the shuttles to, you know, unconceited pots? What could we, what, what could we possibly be talking about this coming weekend? I do want to give a shout out, so we mentioned the, the pain points of the last overseas Solheim cup, IMG event management has taken this event back over and took it away from, I can't even remember it, I think like the Spanish Federation ran it in Spain, but I, I know at least the level of communication that we've been given so far, I appear that the event itself is going to be dialed. They sent us a great listing of the available food trucks on site. Guys, we can't drive to the venue, Saul, you know that. I think we're going to get a couple of two dude bikes, so I'm going to make you, you know, ride in the front as I pedal, pedal from behind you, I'm kidding, we're, we're not doing two person bikes, but a lot of biking going on. We got to teach you guys the, how people do it, like you have like a back to the bikes where you would strap a bag or whatever, or really talented bikers will, you know, somebody will sit on the back and like put their arms around you like a motorcycle, and you got a, you got a bike with them. You're not able to master that one, that one's, that one's a, that one's a tough one pass. Yeah. So you get the, what do you call buckfeats, I think, or like the little carriers in the front that you take kids to school in and stuff, we might get you guys to be able to ride in one of the, Randy in one of those, that would be, that would be awesome. I'm sorry. Just get us some strup level, Saul, I will do whatever you want us to do. Okay.
