Speaker 2This is the Baseball Tonight podcast for Thursday, October 8th, 2026, presented by La Quinta by Wyndham. A buster only working from Yankee Stadium. Taylor Schwenk is working from the Schwenk Studios. And man, what a consequential day on Wednesday in Major League Baseball. Three teams were knocked out, including an elimination here at Yankee Stadium. Late Wednesday Pacific time, early Eastern time, the Milwaukee Brewers closed out the San Diego Padres. Jackson Churio, who else, drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Missed the first 33 games of the big league season.
Speaker 3Hits it hard, a rocket, and Milwaukee's got the lead. Another game, another Churio RBI, 2-1 Brewers.
Speaker 2Here's what it sounded like at the conclusion.
Speaker 32-2 pitch. He struck him out! And baseball! Baseball's best team takes its step to the Final Four. The Milwaukee Brewers are right back in the National League Championship Series.
Speaker 2So the Brewers follow up a 103-win season with a division series victory over San Diego in what was a great series. Probably it'll turn out to be the best series that we had in this round. The Brewers will play the Dodgers, who finished off the Braves 4-1 on Wednesday. Andy Paez got the big hit for the Dodgers.
Speaker 4Everybody on their feet. That one is up the middle! Out in the left center! Andy Paez has his October moment! And he puts the Dodgers on top 3-1!
Speaker 2And as it turns out, the two best teams are facing off in the National League Championship Series. Brewers, with 103 wins against the Dodgers, two-time defending champions. That should be a great series. In the American League, the Tampa Bay Ravens, the Rays closed out the Yankees. Victor Mesa Jr.'s home run gave the Rays a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Speaker 5Mesa, high fly ball, deep into right center. This is way back, and goodbye! Victor Mesa Jr., a bomb into right center field. The Tampa Bay Rays have snatched back the lead.
Speaker 2So it was a crazy scene after. It was actually kind of funny. When he hit the ball, he didn't watch the ball as it soared toward the right field stands. He actually looked toward the home dugout. He was looking at his teammates. And Kevin Cass, the Rays manager, saw him doing that. It was like, run! It was like yelling at him to run. He said after the game, he didn't feel like it was a good time to wake up the Yankees at that point. To, you know, ignite a team that has a lot of good players on it. So he wanted Victor Mesa Jr. just to take his trip. Run the bases. Now, in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Tampa Bay leading 4-2, the Yankees seemingly tied the score in Anthony Volpe's home run. The would-be home run, because the ball had bounced off the hands of an outstretched fan who was wearing a Navy Yankees jacket. And upon review, that call was overturned. Give a listen.
Speaker 5Postseason with the ABS Challenge System. High fly ball. Left field. Over is Mesa. It's carrying. Back to the wall. It is up. It is out. It's a home run. Anthony Volpe has tied it. A rainmaker to left field.
Speaker 6The crew chief's going to get together here, B.A. I think they're trying to see if a fan reached it. Just tell you this. I would. Because that ball, there were two outs. The ball was in the air forever. If I'm an umpire right here, I'm going double and an RBI. After review, we have spectator interference. In addition, the left fielder would
Speaker 5not have made the catch. Therefore, we have one run scoring and the batter-runner is placed at second base.
Speaker 2After the game, Aaron Boone talked about the devastation of losing, about getting sent home.
Speaker 7It's a broken clubhouse. And you just, what you go through as a team, as a family, over the last eight, nine months, getting ready for this. And, you know, there's just, it's the worst. It's the worst, so.
Speaker 2Now, earlier today, Cleveland's 9-3 victory, Joe Adele cleared the bases with a triple.
Speaker 8Here it comes. And Smith. And Adele fights it off. It's a fair ball up the right field line. Vaughn will score. Ramirez behind him. They're going to wave around DeLauder. It's a bases-clearing triple for Joe Adele. His second triple of the series.
Speaker 2So, the White Sox and Guardians will play Game 4 in Chicago on Thursday in the only unresolved series. Now, we've got great guests again today. Jesse Rogers will be talking to us from Chicago. We've got Jessica Mendoza in Atlanta following the Dodgers' wrap. Let's get to it. Every October, you can see it. Speaker 2Jessica Mendoza worked the Division Series between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers for ESPN Radio. And she joins us now right after the Dodgers wrapped up that series. Jess, what does this mean for the Dodgers to get past the Division Series round, which you know has been kind of a thing for them in recent years, that best of five being so short?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think it's definitely been a series. It's solidified their championships when you look over the course of the postseason. Once you get to their World Series, I think back to the San Diego Padres and how they really almost lost that series. It tested them in more ways than they had throughout the entire regular season two years ago. They ended up winning that series, coming back down and winning. And to me, I look at this Braves series and how they were challenged by a very talented team. But it kind of shoved into them during the regular season, won five out of six games. A lot of times I get it, regular season versus postseason. But you saw the Dodgers, even without their stars stepping up, be able to really be able to get to this third win.
Speaker 2And the pivotal hit, of course, in the decisive game four came from Andy Paez, who, just like in 2025, he had kind of a journey, you know, throughout the year. It was an interesting twist for him, you know, getting off to that great start, being an all-star, getting hurt, you know, kind of slumping toward the end, and he winds up getting a huge hit for them.
Speaker 10You know, I talked to him in the pregame, we had an interview with him, and I asked him, you know first of all about his hand he fractured his hand at the end of the season never really got right and he's got demons from last year's postseason buster i know you remember you know he's won for 26 even coming into the game yesterday and he was very frustrated with the narrative still of what is andy pa is going to be able to do the postseason regardless of his all-star campaign everything he did throughout the regular season and he said that he's like i want to put that narrative to rest and i know the only way to do it is to get a big fit he comes up with that in the nine hole tonight walk
Speaker 2me through the at bat with him against suarez where the base is loaded
Speaker 10yeah you know he felled off a ton of pitches he was late on the fastball early and that was one of the things dave roberts talked to us about pa has he's got that big leg kick and he said right now we face elite pitching every night every arm's throwing 100 miles an hour so again suarez kind of minimizing that late kick a bit and what i saw with him in that count is adjust the late kicks to not be as high get the front foot down and really just need a fastball as classic as it gets hit it right back up the middle
Speaker 2they're pitching uh in this series they allowed eight runs in four games uh what'd you see in that group you
Speaker 10know just the ability to kind of figure out the bullpen i mean yoshinobu yamamoto the fact that he ends up getting the ball in game three versus game one right because they went with two lefties and scooble and snell against the braves and yoshinobu yamamoto just set the tone against chris sale i felt like if that game the braves did not win the chris sale game they were not going to win this series that's how it played out tyler glassnode did not have his best stuff tonight struggled with his command so when you hand it over to the what's been the biggest weakness buster the dodgers bullpen to see edwin diaz back-to-back nights get a save i would have not seen that coming two months ago three months ago this is a dude with a nine era coming up massively huge coming at hitters tanner scott all the players are coming up with a nine era coming up that we saw struggle early on really got it done for the dodgers throughout this series
Speaker 2yeah the crossroad performance in this series when you look back at it now is yamamoto in game three uh i was talking about this yesterday and i covered a basketball coach hall of fame basketball coach named don meyer uh and he would have his players during the course of the regular or during the course of the season he would ask them to write down the three teammates that they would want in a you know in a in a bunker with them if there was a big problem and i was just speculating having seen yamamoto you know respond so many times that among the 26 players he might be the guy named on all 26 ballots you know what
Speaker 10and this is something i was doing the game with dave o'brien we're talking about it coming into the game today and it's it's one of those that how is he still not talked about as much i mean you think about all of the love that mizorowski gets and paul schemes and the star power that those guys have and well deserve for the seasons that they have even terrible school some extent and yet here is yoshinobu yamamoto the mvp of the world series last year the most consistent over the last you know three seasons now for the dodgers their ace and yet he's still kind of that sneaky guy that nationally doesn't get the same recognition attention for everything that he's done so
Speaker 2confession in this moment i think when we did top 10 starting pitchers in baseball last spring i had him third or fourth like scooball paul schemes how's that looking right now jess
Speaker 10looking pretty good and that your top two are still legit really good pitchers but i just feel like to your point we all do it is yamamoto still just does not get the attention and i'll tell you what he will if he continues to do what he's doing especially in this
Speaker 2postseason so uh because the dodgers are the first team to punch their ticket to the league championship series round uh they do it now what does this do for their pitching as they move
Speaker 10forward you know i think that especially waiting to see which we talked about the the game and he was talking about kind of well he's like i hope that series goes five games of course the ms has to throw friday you know so that it would depend a lot on kind of what happens over there but he really hopes to face a brewers team and not because he feels like the brewers are worse than the padres but just understanding the drama that comes along with the san diego padres and we've seen it historically for sure the regular season but the postseason just kicks it up a whole different notch and so i think a lot of the pitching strategies are going to be going to be involved around the team they're going to play um but i my guess would be yoshinobi yamamoto gets that game one start because ultimately he is their
Speaker 2best pitcher and then scoobling game two uh maybe i mean depending on how he they feel about where blake snell is maybe he goes game four or would you know what's your guess on game three or four i
Speaker 10think glass would definitely glass i would definitely go game four instead of i just feel like he's a guy that they might need more out of the pen depending on how the series goes and what ends up happening i feel like as far as the confidence goes i mean he's been the one to not be able to get his command down and give them length so depending on where their bullpen is that that is a massive factor because yamamoto and tarik scuba are the ones that have given them the most length and up until now the bullpen has been a weakness you don't want to get to those arms in the sixth inning you need your starting pitcher to get to the sixth seventh inning so that you can go to the few guys who dave roberts trusts
Speaker 2it's a process for shohei otani missed so much time to get his swing back beginning of the series he looked terrible how was he by the end in your eyes
Speaker 10still struggling and it's just kind of caught in between you know you're seeing him flail at sliders off the plate chase fastballs up in the zone take fastballs right down the middle i think a pivotal moment that we saw in game three was him challenged you know an abs that he thought for sure the pitch was going to hit him it ended up being a strike and not even like an inside you know just barely getting the plate it was right over the plate and so i think just his understanding of the strike zone where he's at health-wise he is now nowhere close to being 100 it's amazing buster to think what this offense has done against a really good braves team and braves bullpen without the bat at all shohei otani all right uh it's
Speaker 2the end of the season for the atlanta braves how would you put their year into context i know i i feel like that uh you know with with some of the injuries they had with the starting rotation the fact that they got this far uh i mean at the in the end i think the braves have to feel good about their year what do you
Speaker 10think absolutely i mean i think the biggest thing and we saw it when you see chris sale be able to throw game three of a wild card series that to me and talking to walt weiss it was just so important to beat the phillies the braves had never beat the phillies in the postseason he talked about normally you would never um go with the game three you know your starting pitcher that had just pitched a couple days before in that kind of game but that's how important buster it was for them to win that game three and i think that's what's so important to me and i think that's what's so important to me and i think that's what's so important to me and i think that's what's so important wild card series i'm not saying that they weren't you know satisfied with wanting to keep going the year that they've had winning the nla east but ultimately i think them advancing to get to what's arguably the best team in baseball is understood by braves
Speaker 2nation okay all right jess good to see you good to talk with
Speaker 10you so good to see you buster thanks

Speaker 2jesse rogers covers baseball for espn and on wednesday that means covering that meant covering the game between the guardians and the white socks game three of their best of five series the guardians win nine to three uh and look uh apparently rayfield emptied out so quickly that now it looks like you're doing the ball game and you're doing the ball game and you're doing the blair witch project uh from the press box i'm so afraid jesse well
Speaker 13it was a blackout game everybody in the stands was to wear black and so i guess this is appropriate it was also a dark cloud over the white socks because they played terribly they walked the house on the mound they struck out at the plate it was the worst game in a long time maybe some of it at the end was by design because will venable didn't want to unload his good bullpen arms today with the game tomorrow but man it was a really bad game and they actually led one nothing but after that it was all cleveland i want to get more
Speaker 2particulars on that first you know we talked to chris gatz yesterday uh and he talked about looking forward to the atmosphere in right field separate i mean before they the uh you know the stuff started started turned bad for the white socks what was the ballpark like no it was great
Speaker 13it was great to start the game it was great pre-game they got loud early but as soon as joe adele cleared the bases with a triple in the third inning it really did change now there were some other moments white socks climbed back to five to three they had the bases loaded and jose ramirez made an incredible play so it it the the volume went up and down but it wasn't the nine inning frenzy you might think especially because they were trailing from the third inning on so there were moments but i think tomorrow probably will ratchet up a little bit more knowing that after tomorrow they have to go back on the road if they don't
Speaker 2win white socks had a staffy array in the first four playoff games of 1.75 going
Speaker 13into that game what changed well their their bullpen game fell apart a little bit now like i said they weren't going to use all their a arms brian hudson really struggled um on the mound early with walks so did hagan smith this was the one thing will venable did not want to do with cleveland give them opportunities with men on base because they know they're a little bit power challenged and they're not going to string a lot of hits together and jose ramirez hasn't been jose ramirez so walking the house was exactly the opposite of what will will venable wanted and look when you play so when you throw so many bullpen arms buster there's always that chance one to two are not going to have it and they there was a couple guys that just were not on their game and and their free passes were uh i would say at the beginning um it started out okay and then it just opened up the door for the cleveland guardians they just were walking the house
Speaker 2you mentioned jose ramirez double triple great defensive play this is someone who during the course of the year dealt with a hammock injury uh you know i covered the guardians uh in a game a couple weeks before the end of the regular season and what the feedback he got was yeah he doesn't have full strength in that wrist what did you see in him
Speaker 13today he played with his hair on fire and it's the old jose ramirez we know i hadn't seen that for a long time um his base running was classic jose ramirez he stole third base and then moments later there was a hundred and five mile an hour ground ball the second infield was in and he got home and beat the throw and made a amazing head first slide just momentum going exactly the way you want it leaving his feet exactly when you wanted it and he beat the throw which i could not believe he did and then you mentioned the hitting and the fielding the play of the game was was uh that that that stop on a miguel vargas shot they was able to get up and throw out to first with the bases loaded just classic jose ramirez and that's what everybody in the locker said that's quintessential jose
Speaker 2ramirez and it felt like it was i mean cleveland so young as they are every year because they have to manage payroll felt like something that was needed uh in this moment when they're down to oh
Speaker 13yeah and remember it's also joe adele the veteran that came over mid-season um the socks working up the ladder on him with the bases loaded he sees it that it's that they're working upstairs and finally catches up sort of speak he hit it down the right field line but he got just enough of it on a late swing up in his eyes to to clear the bases with a three-run triple so the veterans did lead the way and and you know you talk to people with with cleveland i'm sure you do buster this is the only chance they have is if jose ramirez shows up and to a lesser extent joe adele as well they just don't have enough parts especially offensively to to lead them if if um at least one or if not both those guys are doing
Speaker 2it yeah what i heard jesse uh was that joe adele you know had not only been you know good in terms of getting right-handed production for a team that has a very left-handed heavy lineup but also just his presence that he's a calm guy other players on that team really respond to him yeah
Speaker 13i interviewed him on on the field right after the game and like the heartbeat was slow everything was fine i mean it wasn't a close game but it just i think you're right he's a calming force look jose's the leader there's no doubt but you add a guy like that mid-season and um hedges was mentioning after the game like the the right um guys to plug in in moments they don't do a lot of big big trades but when they do it's the right guy and joe adele has been a fine i mean he tied kenny lofton for most postseason triples and he had two in back-to-back games that's the most in cleveland history
Speaker 2so we're seeing teams now it's the postseason which means they're leaning into uh some of the key pitchers and big spots i thought it was interesting that you know in a game in which cleveland won nine to three cam smith winds up throwing two innings uh that was i'm sure related to what you're talking about with the white socks making some
Speaker 13noise yeah a little bit i was surprised they came out for the second inning because they extended the lead in the eighth um or in the top of the ninth i should say so i was a little surprised but the guy's already hot he's throwing it was a quick easy eighth inning so you know as long as this stuff is sharp tomorrow okay fine who cares if he pitched two but we saw mason miller in a second inning not even in a back-to-back struggle grant taylor has been used a lot he got hit a little bit in his last outing so kate smith is almost inhumans sometimes sometimes he's kind of robotic but man um i i wonder if if he loses anything tomorrow night i would assume no but you never know two innings when the game was nine to three little interesting kind of tidbit
Speaker 2there yeah and if the guardians uh have a lead they're gonna give the ball to him because i was uh you know in our conversation uh getting ready for the broadcast we did i said he's like the canadian mountie like he he is just all big and he's like he's like the canadian mountie business out on the mound there's no messing around no excuses he just takes the ball and just plows ahead and i you know stephen vo was telling us you know what a great uh you know personality is what you see on the mound i think is this great stoic relief pitcher
Speaker 13yeah and that fastball has such zip i don't care what the number says 98 one or whatever it is there's more on it than you think it has great zip and it had great life tonight and that's why i'm interested to see after two innings does it have the same life tomorrow all
Speaker 2right uh look ahead to
Speaker 13game four what do you see in terms of the matchup so this is interesting now we go back to parker messick and maybe gavin williams if they get to five the socks were able to get you know win those games that they started in games one or two now the socks have played in front of their crowd which you know i wonder if it can work against you sometimes but it won't in a second game maybe in the first game um and and lord only knows buster what the socks are doing on the mound at this point like it's not going to work against you sometimes but it won't in the it's it's going to be their a guys you know hagan smith had a moment today on the mound but he's going to be in into it grant taylor's going to be involved like anybody that didn't pitch today or didn't pitch prominently but look they are not pitching four or five six innings out of these guys it's it's two winning stints maybe three innings if they get lucky um but i i do think they will unload their bullpen tomorrow on the sock side with the day off if they lose while the the guardians are going to rely on parker messick to throw a park parker messick type game
Speaker 2right if the white socks get to the world series they would be one of the great underdogs of all time uh given what happened two years ago given their trajectory coming out of the american league against whoever comes out of the national league they will be underdogs uh and in all seriousness has there been any talk about the pope attending the world series because it just feels like it's meant to
Speaker 13be people thought he was going to throw out the first pitch today that was never going to happen you don't bring out the pope for game one of the ds first if you get the pope
Speaker 2it's got to be for the world series
Speaker 13yeah there's been no talk yet but you know that it'll ramp up if they get there for sure all right
Speaker 2we'll be checking the uh flight you know the the uh what are they called the vatican flight patterns that's right coming vatican if they get there all right jesse thanks for doing this you got it buster anytime
Speaker 14all right buster beat your tweets for a wednesday evening thursday morning let's go to our guy big cito he writes how do i convince my wife to pivot from wesley for our next child's name to yoshinobu yamamoto taking all suggestions seriously this guy's his nail this guy's nails in the offs i love offs as an abbreviation for playoffs love to see it let's go dodgers let's i hope she cracks big cito i
Speaker 2i'm just thinking as someone who's had two kids your chances of a cracking there might be close to zero right i mean there there are the you know the couples that agreed to an o'neill cruise to name before paul o'neill former yankee outfielder uh-huh a few other examples but it doesn't happen very often so good luck with that
Speaker 14maybe you make the the the deal here like hey they win the if they win a third title in a row then we gotta go with yoshi but uh yeah i don't know if that's i mean there
Speaker 2would be some you know what i think bribery needs to be
Speaker 14involved oh i love big cito okay another good one here i saved it from last night jake from utah writes super pumped about all these playoff uh playoff podcasts can we take a second to reflect on the epic baseball tonight podcast episodes last subway last october on the subway uh he recounts some Highlights here, Eduardo helping a Red Sox and Yankee fan on a date. The Yankee fan clairvoyantly saying we need Schlittler for eight solid because he's young and has no fear. He carved up the Red Sox for eight innings after that. The fact that none of the Yankees fans before the game could say Cam Schlittler's name correctly. The Yankees fans who cut class from UMass to drive five hours to get to game three. The fans chanting Kony. Not even a Yankees fan, but those three Clown Caboose episodes were top shelf. Missed them. Hope we can bring them back. Wanted to bring up some memories here. Thank you, Jake, from Utah.
Speaker 2Yeah, Jessica Mendoza, when we asked her to be on the podcast today, the first thing in response she said was Clown Car, right? I remember doing that episode where she and I are walking back from the ballpark in Toronto and we bump into Caleb Joseph, the former catcher for the Orioles. That was pretty cool. I mean, we really did have a lot of fun doing those Clown Car podcasts. And Taylor, you and I haven't talked about it yet. We have to figure out if some version of that's going to be possible.
Speaker 14Yeah, maybe in the next round here. Again, you're a busy guy, Buster, but we're working on it behind the scenes. So glad it resonated. Thanks for writing in. We'll try and do some more Bleacher Tweets to end the week here.
Speaker 2That sounds great. Well, thanks for watching the Baseball Tonight podcast presented by La Quinta by Windham. Tonight, La Quinta to Mario Shana. My thanks today to Jessica and Jesse. And, of course, to Taylor, who's staying up late putting these podcasts together until three or four o'clock in the morning. Tip of the cap again. Thanks for listening. Stay safe. And remember, hate and inequality based on skin color is something we need to fight against every single day.
