In this podcast transcript, the hosts discuss Wes Craven's 1989 film *Shocker*. The film follows a college football player with a psychic link to a serial killer, Horace Pinker, who gains supernatural abilities after being executed. The hosts note the movie's low ratings (29% from critics, 34% from audiences) but acknowledge its cult appeal among some horror fans. They describe the plot as chaotic and disjointed, likely due to Craven having significant creative control without tight producer oversight. The conversation frequently diverges into nostalgic side topics, including the film's memorable VHS box art, trailers for other late-'80s movies like *The Wizard* and *Next of Kin*, and humorous anecdotes about waterbeds. Overall, the hosts view *Shocker* as a flawed, eccentric entry in Craven's career that reflects the era's experimental horror style.
No more Mr. Nice Guy. Tom the fire up the VCR! This one's my favorite! [MUSIC PLAYING] That was gold! Welcome, Dennyl Lajones, in the Tempo film I'm Steve. I'm Chris. And we're a VHS podcast that looks at the box art trailers and behind the scenes. And this week we're finishing off our-- Hey! It's not that bad! It's not that bad. This week if they can't read, Chris, what are we watch? We're watching 1989's Shocker. Oh yeah, Brad, you picked this. That's right. What's the explanation here? It's bringing us in the air, electricity's in the sky, and it just seems right. The universe is aligning, so we have to review this. Everyone needs to hear what we have to say. Yeah, well, there's definitely going to be some things said. [LAUGHS] I had never-- so I'm kind of in between on this with my-- this is not my first time, but I think this is my first time sitting down from beginning to end watching this. And because it took us such a long time, mostly my fault, because I had another hardware issue, but fixed it. And mine, I went on vacation. And Chris went on vacation. So I've seen this twice, and I still-- no, it doesn't make sense. I was in the process of watching it as you guys cute up again. Yeah. The reason I chose this was because I remember when I was like a contrarian teen watching this and thinking, oh, shocker, with the greatest movies of all time, and then I wanted to watch it again, because I saw the ratings were really low on this. So I thought, OK, this is one that the critics didn't like. The audience didn't like-- but I liked it. So it was kind of like, hey, this is a movie I like that everyone else thinks sucks. So we're going to go with it. And we're going to see if it holds up. If people still think it sucks, I think horror fans generally like this movie. I've never heard anybody talk shit about it. People let talk about it like it. Well, for me, this is always wrapped into that right after-- it's kind of like a nightmare in Elm Street. And then he just kind of goes off the deep end with a bunch of movies, because I know he does the Hills I Vise too, but I don't know if he directs that, but he definitely does deadly friend. Which if anyone out there has not seen that, that is something that is very interesting. And then he does the serpent and the rainbow, which I think a ton of people like, and then shocker. And then we get into the people under the stairs. And you're kind of like, I always lump that into that. It's just that right after nightmare. And then before he makes his huge comeback with new nightmare and then scream. But somewhere around there, he also slides in Vampire Brooklyn, which is one of the most bizarre things he's ever made. All right. I remember enjoying that movie. Yeah. I don't know if I have the courage to re-watch that as an adult. [LAUGHTER] I haven't seen this since I was a child. And I was like, man, it doesn't make sense. But I was a child. And then it doesn't make sense. And you grow up and you're like, you understand? Yeah, growing up, you're just making it up as they go. It does look way better compared to Battlefield Earth though. So much better. Well, let's get into this bad boy here. I'm going to-- Oh, yeah. So bring him up. Quick, Facts Bird. OK. So directed by Wes Craven starring Peter Berg, who we have also reviewed a movie of his called Aspen Extreme. A Top Gun in a Mac. A Mountain. Very fun movie. Very fun. Michael Murphy is the detective Mitch Pillaggi from X-Files fame. And Cammy Cooper plays the girlfriend dream connection with the magic pendant. I don't know what she does. [LAUGHS] Here. No, it's like-- What do I do with my hands now? Credit details here. We got the box office pulled $16.6 million on a budget of five. So it turned out a good return, but not enough for a franchise. None of us continue to franchise. This got a 29% in the critics and a 34% audience score. Does that shock me at all? Not a shocker. Not a shocker. Do you want me to read one of the more-- Yes. One of the more colorful quotes about this movie. With an intriguing enough premise and horror legend Wes Craven on Writer Director Duty, the real shocker here is how lame the end result turned out to be. Come on. It's not that lame. You don't really surprise me. I'm going to stop using shock. But what surprised me about this is how disjointed it ended up being at the end. Because I was like, this feels-- two films. It definitely feels like two different films. But somewhere in there is another film. Yeah. I mean, it kind of fits with some of that cool late '80s, middle '80s, weird ass horror video drum. What's the one with the intergalactic satellite signal that they pick up? Is that a television? Yeah, a television. That one where the aliens come to earth and the teenagers are really good friends with them. The weird ass horror movie about it. People start dying. You want to just remember boobs and goo and that one. Yeah, but the big difference is this video drums much better than this. And then what was the other one you mentioned? Terror vision. Now, "Terevision" is a ton of fun, too. I remember the grandpa and that. Love's grandpa. Do you? He's got some problems, baby. Some of my favorite characters in movies are racist grandpas. I mean, they're just-- They say whatever was on that. They're magic family. [LAUGHTER] They're straight shooters. You always know where they stand. That's like the alcoholic neighbor, like old guy. He's like, oh, you don't want to go down that way. Yeah. Like the crazy neighbor and like, what was it, the burbs? These are the burbs for rules. Yeah. So-- That's why if I was ever a director or a producer, I would find a role for Steve Busce-Amy in everything. And Danny Trejo. No, Danny Trejo is weird. He just is awesome and likeable. You're making distinct films here, baby. No one's right. I'm with a big water cash asking me to do a film for them. So probably for a number of reasons that-- Sam, I wouldn't do. I win the lot all. Have you make a movie? Oh, yeah. That'll be great. A cheap one, though. Real cheap. Yeah. One thing, if you look at trying to transition to the poster and everything like that, because I think you guys can notice something pretty distinct. When you see that, this is one of the coolest VHS or even posters I remember as a kid. It's distinct. It's cool. Where you got pinker, just getting electrocuted right up there. I mean, it's-- It's like a metal album cover. Yeah. Like you're imagining it, saying like Iron Maiden or Metallica. Yeah. We even get like an Alice Cooper song in this, not sung by Alice Cooper, which is interesting. Don't know the story behind that. Too busy playing like your local community fair for the month. You know, this place here at the fairgrounds. Does he? Yeah. Well, man's got to make his money. He's got to pay for his-- He's the awful thing. 15th house, yeah, or whatever. Now, this is the time period where this-- and I think a live production did this-- where they were handing out a free reign-- free creative reign-- to a lot of these horror directors. The producers just made sure they're like, hey, you can do whatever you want as long as you put your name above the title. And that's why we get stuff like West Craven Shocker, West Craven's People Under the Stairs, or John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. This entire production studio was built on letting creative people be creative. And when I read that and heard more that on the screen factory DVD that I have or the blue ray that I have, that I had never watched until Brad offered this up. And I'm like, oh, yeah, it's still in the wrapper. I got for $10 on their sale. Oh, yeah. Well, yeah, you can definitely tell that this is a creative person who has free reign. And I'm like, oh, now I know why it doesn't make any sense. No producer sitting there, but like, hey, really an a bit budget. Well, I imagine also too that historically, or in, you know, personally, a lot of creative people, I know they're terrible with numbers. So I imagine they ran out of time or budget on this. Like West Craven's like, hmm, gonna have to figure something of this out. [LAUGHS] I really needed a-- I really needed a better producer on this. Brad, did we have any more quick facts? No more quick facts. OK. Well, we all had seen this somewhat, Brad picked it. So let's move on to this, which I hope is just a tremendous trailer, because I've not watched the trailer on these. But I remember the trailer for this on some of the VHS that I had seen. I remember it looking amazing. Cross my fingers. Hopefully it's still the same. Let's check it out. [MUSIC PLAYING]
[music] We are here today to bear witness to the execution of Horace Pinker, whose unspeakable atrocities have horrified the people of this great state. He stands convicted of 52 counts of aggravated assault, 23 counts of armed robbery, and 37 counts of murder in the first degree. Present at any final words? Yeah. No more Mr. Nice Guy. [music] Get them on you! Wes Craven brings you his greatest creation. No more! Shocker. Yeah, it seems like there's a really cool film. Seried in this film. Like I think Longmore man's fucking rad. I love that movie and most people hate it. I could have picked that. It would have been a better pick than Battlefield X. But there's bits of it that I think are the coolest thing ever. And bits of this movie are rad is shit. Just weird. Wes Craven goes off the rails sometimes. Yeah, you know what else went off the rails? Was the number of trailers on this VHS? You're wrong. Do you like 70- There's zero trailers. There's zero. Well, I'm talking about the UK version. Apparently it was crossed upon there. They love their trailers. You get 17 minutes of trailers in this thing. Yeah, I saw you write that up there. And I'm like, wow, this is an incredible lineup of trailers. Guess what? I watched all of them and. Next of kin. Next of kin. So some suede. That's cool. That would be sick when we first started on this. That was on like my list to watch with you guys. Yeah, that looks cool. You get like the one Baldwin who was in DC cab. And he was in full milk jacket. One who's gotten in trouble for like saying some racist things. We got next up with Johnny Hansen there, starting Mickey work in Lance Hendrickson. May I go back to next kin and just read everyone the cast when I first looked it up. Yeah. This doesn't. Wow, I can't believe I've never heard of this. Patrick Swayze on that one. Patrick Swayze. Patrick Swayze. No, Patrick Swayze, Liam Neelson, Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Ben Stiller, Adam Baldwin, and then a bunch of character actors that people would recognize. But I won't mention them. But. I only remember Patrick Swayze. That's insane. But I remember the movie being pretty good. Wow. I might. Yeah, I'm definitely going to have to put this on my list. I've never heard of this. Roger. It's nuts. It's like some like mafia type thing in the South kills somebody's family. And then they all go secret veg. It's cool. It seems like there's pretty good odds that there's a drunk uncle in there. Maybe a re. Yeah, there's like moon shiner and shit. I haven't seen it in a long time. So I don't remember. Like just think of like Chicago mob mafia bootlegger thing, but like in the South. Sounds great. Yeah, it was tight. All right. What else we got here? Well, Johnny Hanson, starring Mickey Rourke, Lance Hendrickson, and some other people. I don't think I've ever seen this or. You remember hearing about it until some of these trailers came across my viewport. I don't think I've heard of this either, yeah. And the third trailer number three on this bad boy was restless starring Judd Nelson, James Cohn, and Meg Ryan. Meg was coming off her, of course, her Oscar-worthy performance in top-done from 1985. But I don't remember this. Yeah, I know. I mean, now after this, I know these movies. So this is. This is fun. Next up, Hard to Kill. Steven Sigal, I have no idea what else was in it, and I don't care because he's got Sigal in there. Dude, old Sigal movies were all. Oh, well, yeah. Next up, next up was a movie. I saw this in the theater. I'd forgotten about this. I forgot even what the name was, but it's basically an hour and a half long advertisement for Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. 3. The Wizard. The Wizard. It's got a musical theater. Jamie Gertz, I think, who else was in it? One of the bridges, I think, was in it. Yeah, I mean, we reviewed it. It's just. It's such a fun nostalgia blast from the end of the '80s. Just coming out with a Super Nintendo and the new game that the game. Dude, I just looked at Johnny Handsome. That movie looks fun. That movie looks real fun. Yeah, it's the one with Mickey Rourk, right? Yeah. Yeah, actually, this entire list. I'm like, "Oh, man. I know there's one that I. I wouldn't watch the fourth war." Again, I have actually seen that. I don't know how I ended up seeing that, but as soon as I was like, "Oh, my gosh, I've seen this." We got Total Recall and that's. Yeah, Black Rainbow, starting Rosanna Arquette, who was such a great actress, Total Recall and that's the song about her. Is this the one where she's new to Nintendo a lot? And there's like controversy. I don't know if there's controversy, but I can't remember if this is the movie I'm thinking about. Because I remember someone in a documentary talking about it. Well, I don't know. It looks cool. Perhaps her nudity inspired To-To to write a lesson on her. I don't know. I might be thinking about another movie that just kind of has the same visuals. I don't know. I hit the look it up. I don't really know. I don't forget I said it. Beyond the Black Rainbow looks even cooler. I got to watch her and do a double feature and that'd be tight. I want to see a Black Rainbow. Where's their Black Rainbow? I don't know. In space. Because that's what beyond the Black Rainbow looks like. Weird space. Black Rainbow looks like a cult film. All right. Well, I mean, that's quite a lineup. But let's get on to this movie. Good luck, Brad. Good freaking luck. Yeah. We're going to make this short here. This movie basically starts off. We're in a small town. It's a lot of a lot of the same things you see with West Craven here. It follows Jonathan. Peter Berg is a college football player who shares a bizarre psych. A psychic connection with a sadistic serial killer, Horace Pinker. He's got a hot girlfriend. He's got a water bed. Yeah. Fucking love water beds. I miss him. So I've never put anyone here ever done it on a water bed. Is that. That seems like it's awful. No, the water bed didn't exist when I was 19. Neither. I mean, my older brother had a water bed for like maybe a couple years. And then I think he realized this thing sucks. We my buddy had one and we used to have sleepovers at his house. And we'd all wake up wet a lot. Oh, we're just popping. We're like, God damn it. Ooh. Yeah, that's gross. Yeah, I'm waiting for a water bed to make a comeback. We're going to start that right here. It's not going to happen. It's no no. Yeah, I think after we got past the 80s nostalgia boom. And now we moved on to the 90s and get into the 2000s. I think water beds are just they lost their their possibility. I don't know. Those reminds me this thing came back like the 80s. Like when they were in entire water bed stores, there's this guy. He was this entrepreneurial guy. He like had a car dealership. And then whatever was hot, he had like a store that was like that was selling it. So he had a water bed place for a while. And he was selling, I don't know, he was furniture for a while. But this dude was like, he's probably just, you know, rolling in money right now. He's got a knock off Lou Limon store now. No, probably something like that. Yeah, so he wasted it all in his drug addiction. Oh, well, you know, that's probably what happened. People made fun of him. He's loaded. He's probably living in a key West or someplace nice right now. So, you know, chase your dreams. If your dream is selling water beds, I mean chase that. Yeah, brother chase your dreams. Okay, back to the movie here. Pinker, he's a TV repairman. He's gonna act for brutal murders, like breaking into people's homes and like killing them. You finally catch John, John, like basically has a psychic connection and Jonathan's up. Who are you? He's gonna do the next crime. But this is after they go try to apprehend pinker that his his shop or apparently he loves watching old like the comes of nuclear weapon and murderers and just evil stuff and he leaves a TV zone all they long. The store is crazy. The store is pretty cool. Yeah, it's pretty neat. You got like a skate patches. Yeah, tube TVs and hidden passages. And then how they introduce him, which is extremely Freddie Krueger like he's just working on a TV all pissed off and I'm like, oh gee, that's like Freddie make it as glove. You know true to what's craving for them to show up the cops are completely just in the cells and get dispatched immediately and. Yeah, he escapes and. After changing into a cops uniform, but. How about having a trap door or whatever we're going to call it like a hidden entrance and then immediately knowing where the hidden entrance is because there's blood pouring out underneath it and I'm like. So what's the point of putting the hidden entrance to the movie.
I didn't mean for the blood depot out of it. I know, but if you think about it, it's shooting it. Someone made a hidden passage in a room that they didn't really need. And then at the end of the day, we'll, was the point. Oh, yeah, they made it real good too. Yeah. Like you said, what is going on? Anyway, I just think about the production people in that. They're like, fuck, that's it. Yeah. So even though it's out, he pinkers us track down. It goes to his house, kills his girlfriend, makes that, it grew some little scene. I don't know if we see it. I don't know if we saw her get murdered. But he comes and he sees the, you're like, you're in the bathtub. The bathtub and everything. And then pinkers got a message for him. But eventually he catches me through his dreams. They take me to jail, pinker ruffs up some, ruffs up some guards. But he's making a deal with the devil. Yeah, I mean, I know you're trying to fly through this as quick as possible. But we are passing up a lot of gold in this, including at one point when he's playing football, the main guy who, who looks like he's 33 years old playing, I guess some kind of community college quarterback or wide receiver. Sorry, wide receiver. Right there. What? They're high schoolers. No, this is a college. Oh, I thought he was, I thought they're high schoolers. He lives in his own apartment. It's a movie. I don't know. I lost it. It's not that easy to follow sometimes. But it really establishes how stupid the guy is because he runs into the goal post at one point. Yeah, they don't have a question protocol back then because they clearly don't care about his brain. He's just getting just fast over the head routine. CTE is his friend. You get as much push as they're told that see. Maybe that's how we got the psychic connection because he just obliterated his brain. I mean, this movie, what I mean at one point, yeah, Chris brought it up. You get more asked than a toilet seat. That's what it was. And then his girlfriend, I'm going to put clothes around this, said like, you don't remember us. We've been dating on and on for a year and we haven't even had sex yet or something. I'm like, wait, what? There's a lot of movies where people wake up from amnesia or whatever and they find out that their partner isn't really their partner. Did she do that to him? She's like, this is my chance. He's a keeper. I can change him. How's it get more? I mean, did they just make it up their own lines and they didn't like put two and two together. There's like, how at one point does he get more asked in a toilet seat and then the next he hasn't even banged this girl, which I don't even know if they're girlfriend and boyfriend. I don't know what the fuck is going on with this because then she's dead. And he gets like some type of momentum that like is pure. Okay. I don't know. But I continue with this because this is like after you're done, there's many discussions in this film. Okay. So Pinker gets executed and he starts doing this routine like jumping from body to body, which was very entertaining at times, especially like he's like, oh, my jumping to a child. Then she hops on the bulldozer and starts trying to run down Jonathan there. Among other things, he's wreaking havoc in a large scale. He can travel through power lines now. He can come to an out of TV. He's the shocker. You know, he can disguise himself as a chair. Yeah. Yeah. That one. All right. Everything's like fucking electricity based and I get it a lazy boy's or whatever they had the electric one. That one is the most confusing out of this like jumping through people is his power. And then it goes, I think I can. I think I can. Okay. Can they get into the electrical lines? He's like, when there's a little bit of, what do you mean a little power? It's on her in 20 volts right there. That's a lot of power. I don't hurt. I don't get the chair. It's another thing. It makes no sense. Yeah. It's another footnote that we go for when Brad's done. So he's trying, they're trying to track him down in there. They're failing. He's going around. He's still murdering everything. He's jumping around through power lines. He wants to take himself like worldwide. He's like, I'm going to be worldwide or something like that. Somehow, I don't know how do the he gets that pendant from his girlfriend. He loses it and he finds it again or something. He's like, I don't remember exactly. And the lady in the leg style, it comes back. Yeah. And he's basically telling you and he tells them media crew. He's like, I can tell you where he's going to be. And then the one guy, when the one guy looks like sign fell. I thought it was like sign fell at first like before his career got going. But I guess at this point, sign feels career probably was going. But you mean, you mean on the crew on the crew? Yeah. I'm not going to do it. Should I stop rolling? No, I got faith in him. I got faith. And we get one of the craziest that fight at the end was the one of the craziest fights where they were jumping around to TV and war zones and the televanjolish show through a news. Or a newscast. And basically uses the. I forgot how we get some how we finally defeat the horse, Pinker with his remote control. And they zap him into the other world and then we're supposed to see him again, but we never do because what's crazy even was moving on to other projects. Yeah. So I would think one place I'm going to start is so he's doing some type of black magic stuff at one point in the in the repair shopper in the prison. Okay. So he does it both places. Yeah. And the prison prison is a pretty cool scene. So we'll talk about both. We'll back to back here. So in the first one, I remember they were hanging cats. Yeah. I don't approve. So is that something the black is that like an animal sacrifice? Yeah, I would imagine. I guess straight cats would just be easy for him to get. Yeah. So it and somehow he gets electric demon powers from this. I thought he got that from the prison. Well, okay. So and then in the prison because you know, apparently he is executed like the next week. There is no trial and like none of the families want to sue him for civil reason or something. Okay. So he just immediately goes to execution. And then his last meal, I guess this is it. There are jumper cables, candles and a television he's praying to to become electric man. I don't know when he was even praying for. Is it just take my soul or whatever? The static. Like talking to him like you got it or something. Yeah. Yeah. It's like he's going to the lamest noise show ever. Yeah. It's like you got that baby. What? So I guess because he repairs televisions, he's found an electric god to pray to and he became the electric grimland kind of only made it. If you think hard enough, gods are only created by the human mind. So if you believe in something strong enough, you could create a god. Okay. Fine. He created an electric god. And who knows who knew that the electric god would also have the power to pass through bodies? We're electricity man. Okay. But sadly, anything that is physical with you would come out the other end because every character that he transforms into has the limp where they drag their right leg. Yeah. I think that's like a bit of falling down like falling down. That's a way fucking better body. Yeah. That's the one with down. Falling down. Yeah. Yeah. Falling down. Now falling down to the one where he shoots up the McDonald's. What's the Dinsel one called? Is it just called falling? I don't know what it is, but he like it's got John Goodman in him in it and the transfers through different bodies to touch. Yeah. That's on. Yeah. Yeah. Falling down to the one where the guy pretends he doesn't have a job anymore. He carries a suitcase and shoots up McDonald's because it stops selling breakfast. Yeah. That's Michael Douglas, right? Yeah. Yeah. That movie rules too. I can relate to some of that now. Nothing actually. It was really cool. And then as I got older and I was like, fuck you. It's 1001. You get to the point. Yeah. You get to the point as a man. You're like, you understand like you're just losing things every day as they go on. And ultimately, all you end up with is like your integrity, like your self worth and you're lucky a family and. Yeah. I think he kills a Nazi in that movie. So that's kind of it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's really great. I was like, he's going down the all right pipeline and then he killed a Nazi. And then you're really confused. You're like, wait, what? Thank you. God's work there, but. Oh. So there's more questions. The lazy boy, yes, is definitely the most Freddie Krueger kill and well, no, he doesn't even kill a son in this. Oh, yeah. We forgot to mention it's his son is why he has a psychic thing when he's getting electrified. He's like, you remember, boy, you shot me as you beat your mother and you grabbed the gun and you shot me and he's like, no, it isn't true. It is a true pop up. And he starts crying and he's like, you're a star, little pussy and I'm going to beat you again. And then he hugs him from behind like a father. There are a lot of good one liners in this. I have to admit that I mean, when he bites the guards hands, the fingers off, it goes finger-like and good. And his coach and his friend Rhino are amazing throughout this film. Dude, what friend did that they got killed when the coach was there? My tape you've seen it is kind of dark. I thought just coach died. Did it find a guy? He's like, don't check the closet. I made a mess. He goes too much.
Yeah, I should have wrote that down. Who cares? It's gonna nerd friend. Yeah. Yeah, I got IMDB. But wait, let's pause everything for 20 minutes. I'm just going through that quote that I sent you guys and my ask for wedding and I'm going to be back. Oh, Ted Rami. Oh, that's right. Yeah, my tape's kind of dark. So I'm like, uh, I see. Yeah, not the best note taking. Yeah, Ted Rami, Pac-Man. I should have thrown that in there. We should have started off with that. But we didn't. I stole mine from somebody else. It keeps my movie was so confusing. I'm not doing it. This is the greatest line in the movie in my opinion. Would coach just like trying to inspire them or no, no, no, when try when coach is trying to figure out what's going what's happening. I don't get it. You mean to tell me pinkers alive somehow and he can jump in and out of people's bodies like the goddamn clamp or something? Yeah, that's what I was going to say that line. If that's not what you're saying. Oh, but yeah, I do. Here's here's all my questions throughout this. One, the necklace I was so confused about because I did not pick up the first time that it was like a piece of their love and somehow it's just the necklace that she was wearing. I'm just the star David every time I see it. I have no idea what the necklace he missed. No, I think it's a heart. It makes it. It looks like they picked it up from Sears at the mall before they started shooting and they're like, we need something. Yeah. And so it's supposed to represent their love. And for some reason, that can stop his biological father. No explanation on that. The electrical demon. Yeah, she comes back as a ghost. Yeah, by the way, he's like a star wars ghost. He's banging that ghost, right? You'll find a way. He's determined. I mean, it's like a force ghost. You could feel it. So I think he's definitely banging it. Electric ghost. Then it'd be all like static tingling. What's the opposite of electric goat? Well, water ghost. I think earth beats electric and Pokemon. So, okay, you don't want to mess with the water ghost. They will f you up. Yeah, that seems scary. You also have the heart ring in. And I see a environmental one captain planet. That's the William mischaracter. I've got the power of heart. No cares about that kid. He's just getting his ass beat and he's like, I love you. The character in Captain America is Captain, Captain planet is Captain planet. Oh, yeah, Captain planet. I said Captain America. Whoops. Captain planet. I mean, take your moment. Your green moment and get out of here. Dude, I love the college humor or whatever. Yeah. Uh-huh. redo of it. It just turns everybody into fucking trees. Another one I have is the necklace on the camera that actually ends up killing Pinkett. I that one. I'm like, okay. So he was he jumped into it. He knew he was going to go into TV. He knew he was. Yeah. He told them to destroy the power station. I said, how did the kid even know Pinkett jumps into TV's? He like just that the class and the electric waves and he's like, I'll get him into television into my old bedroom or something. I don't know. Well, it seems like this kid gets a lot of his stuff just by being related. Because he's just like you're a killer just like me. And I'm like, I don't think that's genetic. And then he can travel through stuff because his dad, I guess, is it I don't and then his dad drug them in there. Okay, but still it's just like I still doesn't make sense. No. And I'm like, so I'm going to go with blood blood relation. These like maybe somehow whatever. But then the then the part that really irritates me. So they're like writing new rules from scene to scene about him traveling into a TV and then he can bring his son and you know, somehow this is part of his electric power. Then other people can watch him jump through television and then he gets someone's remote, which it looks like they pop on, you know, into the set of Roseanne or it's just a loudmouth woman just like, oh, my God, so fighting. He steals a remote. And then the remote works everywhere on multiple televisions. Just a little bit. I think they just said, like, yeah, let West crook. Let him cook here. Like let him go. Like he's got a track record of success. I think it's enjoyable. It doesn't make any sense. But it is the funnest part. And all the while they're playing like, you know, they got some heavy metal going in the background. It's it's very enjoyable. Yeah. And it feels like a lot of off brand heavy metal. I'm not complaining about that. The reason I say this mostly because, you know, we've got Alice Cooper's song in here. No more Mr. Nice guy not saying by him, which I don't get I'd love to know the explanation. Maybe Megadeth wanted to really play it and they said, I always can we just play the song like unsmovey, you know, let's go. Is it Megadeth? Yeah, it's Megadeth. He play. I have that CD. I used to have that CD. No way. Maybe Megadeth just covered it. And they're like, we do like that version better. Or Alice is more expensive. Who knows? It comes down to money is all it comes down to money and friendships and who you know. A lot of guys in metal, they they let play like they love to cover some of their songs like their their idols and the people that inspired them, you know, so I think it was a chance to I don't know, I'm just totally making this up right now. I'm thinking Dave Mistain called it Alice Cooper. It's like, Hey, we want to play this song. You cool with it? We'll give you some real days. Yeah. That's usually how it works. Well, I think Alice Cooper also ended up paying in one of the Freddy's. Like Freddy six or something Freddy's dad wasn't he in that. I've only seen Freddy five. So I don't know. That's it. That's the joke. That's the one I grew up watching the the most by far. We had it on tape. I watched it all the time. Okay. My brother had the poster and it always freaked me out when I was a little kid. This son of a child of a thousand maniacs. Yeah, it wasn't the story that his mom was raped by all the men that were a mental institute. Yeah. By a thousand maniacs. That's the one I've only seen once one time. It's cool. It's got a dunk tank scene. That's fun. I remember there's a pizza. Yeah. That's like a weird one. You know, even if you're on birth control and you get raped by a thousand maniacs, you're still likely to get pregnant. Yeah. Because it's it's not 100% effective. Yeah. Yeah. If you're not 100% effective, a thousand times, it should fail one of those times. That's why people come to this podcast for information like that. Yeah. Your medical information from us is like we can be trusted. Yeah. And also, you know, here to hear us explain what I mean. Okay. So the limp when I watch the shell factory documentaries. So the actor who's playing horsepinker, which I need to point out, I really do like the name or spinker. I think that's a great serial killer name. I don't know why. Because it sounds like a serial killer off of a serial killer documentaries. Fair enough. And so I guess he was working on a lot of physical stuff for the killer and everything like that. But then West Craven's like that's great. But we hired this little girl who was awesome. And she started doing the limp for the killer. So that's what you're going to do. And there's your explanation. She limped before anybody else limped. Yep. That was one of the first things they shot that little girl. Because I don't know if it was timing. They freaking loved her. Which by the way, she is a highlight in the middle this in the yeah, I'd say around the middle of this movie where you got a little cousin girl. Yeah. That's the reason I don't know if it was their idea or she started to do it. I don't know how that came about. But yeah, he limps because of her or drags is like. Oh, well, she did really great. She set up a very memorable part of the character. I mean, honestly, in this entire movie, the best part is just horsepinker running around like a crazy person. Dirty, gross, really physically menacing and just like hanging out. It's like burnt skull from the electric chair, isn't it? Yeah. You know what? We even forget to mention that he can. So this is part of it too. So it becomes a body transfer movie. Then it turns into the ability to transfer through anything with electricity. Yeah. That's still the dumbest thing ever. He's pointing at it goes, I think I can. I think I can. I think I like Thomas the train. One then one point. He's so I was trying to figure out if he was like an electric ghost, then he turns his hand into like a plug to plug into the wall to get more power. Yeah. It gets real looney to see how long it goes on, but he's also a ghost. Have you ever seen the movie ghost? He learns his abilities as he goes. Well, that's fair if they establish that, but they kind of make this appear that horse knows everything about this world. The key of plan this for a long time. Yeah. And it's not it's not crazy like a little monsters where you know, things are just going to happen. You're like, that's cool. This is like a guy that just died after getting TV powers. Yeah. I think you just got to do a much better job. First of all, you got to cut a lot of this down because this script is
just overloaded with way too much. And I know they wanted to make this a franchise. And I wonder if one time he's just like, I don't know if this is going to work. So I'm going to show it together. So we're going to shove every idea I've ever had for this in there. I think the body transfer stuff and like the college friends girlfriend dynamic is good. I think that was good. The TV parts type. That's fun. But it doesn't need to be the film could have been two. So that would make sense of mashing them together. Yeah, it's just the last third of this turns into like wax work two where you're like, what the fuck's happening? I don't know. You remember wax work two and I do. Yeah, I do. That is good call back there. Yeah, I would agree with that. Way better than wax work. Wax work had crazy. The crazy guy in the wheelchair fighting the gets his head ripped off. I love that. Yeah, I know I'm always going to say twos are better. Yeah, but I remember two just sucking ass. Yeah. I remember. It's got that crazy lady mutant jaguar thing or whatever it was. We couldn't figure out what the fuck it was. Yeah, but it also has like medieval times in it. That's cool. Yeah, and the fragrance. Yeah, whatever. That's cool. Yeah. All right. Do we have any more questions? Oh, damn, and I forgot this. It just came back to me. The entire I got a dive into the lake, a river would know as a lake to get her. It's like a pernagalist in a park. And at one point, he's just like, I need my diving goggles guys. I can't go back to my apartment because my girlfriend died. And they finally go back and get it and they all have trench coats on before they pull the crime off at one point. But I think before this, they never really get him his goggles because I think they get destroyed. And then he just turns around the floor in the blood where his friend falls out of the closet. Oh, okay. Because I can make a mess on the floor. They're laying in the puddle of blood. But it turns out he actually doesn't need them at all. He just dives into the lake at one point just because oh, here it is. Yeah. Real Lord of the Rings lady of the lake. Just because there it is. I really need my diving goggles guys. They're out waiting in the water like waist deep at night trying to find it with no flashlights or anything. How the fuck would you ever find that? I don't know because it's like a little pond. It's like off of a golf course. It's because it's just a pond. He even made it find it. This is one of the common tropes we see in in movies. Yeah. It's destiny. I did go like this when the modern days looking at this on the cop shoots a guy in the back running away. I was like, oh, that's fine. There could be some political jokes there. But it was a white guy. So it's okay. They'll just destroy the body cam. I'm evident. So anyways, that's fine. He didn't have body cams back then. Yeah, they're lucky. They didn't. Yeah, cops got away. Cops easily could get away with stuff like that. They're just be like, oh, you're gonna believe this crack head? I didn't have any crack on me. Just sprinkle a little crack. What you did now. It's not funny, folks. Okay. You're not funny. You're you're you're awful. Need to be more considerate towards people's feelings about the past. Okay, I'm sorry. You want a hog? You want to sleep out of water bed together? That's how you truly heal. Yeah, dude. They're all pinhole in it. So we wake up wet. See, you know what? Cops and robbers, if they were forced to live with each other in a water bed for one week, they'd learn to love each other because they'd be like, well, at least we don't have to live in a fucking water bed. We're in this together. A lot of comedy. It's a new reality show. What is it naked and afraid? How about water bed and afraid? It's not gonna last long, but one season on Netflix. That's fine. They'll throw money at it. They canceled the good shows and leave the crap ones going for eight years. So so that you're saying that one has a chance. Oh, yeah. It's gonna be the longest running show here in 2050. And then when they interview us, you guys created this. What were you thinking? Honestly, we didn't think it'd make it pass episode one. Kind of amazed. So wait in on our checks. Damn it. It's worth it. At least pay better than this podcast. If at least one Bitcoin, which at that point will be worth about, I don't know, $50 billion. We go to turn it in. Damn it. Brad, did you order pizza? And you start Bitcoin? It's all headband. Yeah, I paid in Bitcoin. Give him a nice little tip in Bitcoin. Anything. Do we have any more behind the scenes on this? I was going to talk about some themes and tropes here. If you know this, like so. One of the themes that this kind of talks into, it goes into as technology as evil. No, and this is something that especially for like boomers, like technology is bad. You know, the way you do it. You know, look at all the violence we're exposed to every day. If you look on a neighbor social media devices, the people figured out pretty quick. And the algorithms that you know what gets people to get people's attention is something controversial or some violence. Yeah, it bleeds it reads. I get a whole lot of like extreme sports accidents. Skateboards and scooters. No, it's a horror movie. It plays on people's things. I eat, which is the influence of like technology in your daily life. Another theme here is the psychotic connections and destiny. We're going to talk about love beyond death, of course. We got corrupting nature of violence, which is a common trope and a lot of things, not just not just West Craven's films. Well, what was that in this one? It's the sun. The oak. The sun's nature. Yeah, the corrupting force, like even how he dies, evil can't be stopped even by death itself. Oh, your stupid mom came into this house with that gun just because I was beaten or see what the fuck? You know, of course, this is like, you know, this movie we got some trope here, you know, the over-the-top flash or the slasher villain, you know, like the flash or villain. Another franchise that we came up with, the trademark that this time, like Freddie Krueger, horse pinkers, kind of with these sadistic, you know, supernatural abilities, you can possess people, travel through electricity, which I don't think Freddie can do that, but you know, pinkers like very, you can say he's very bizarre as an antagonist. I think you guys would agree with that. We got like the dream logic psychic powers, very common West Craven trope there. Even though we don't really quite understand as much this time around in this movie. It's fine. You want some really some? I was just thinking like, because you know, nightmare known street three had the whole, you know, welcome the prime time bitch and the TV death. Did he write that movie? I can't remember. I'm not the person to ask. No. I'm just wondering, yeah, I don't know, because I wonder if he did that movie cause them to get into like TV, you know, a TV filled horror franchise? He's like, I got it. I don't know. What's the nightmare known street three called? Dream warriors. Dream warriors. Dream warriors. Yeah. I'm sorry. Jesus Christ. Oh, yes. He did. He wrote that and then and then two years later, he did shocker. Guys, you know, doesn't take a lot to kind of see where that links. Yeah, he's got a formula that works. You know, another trope that we go. He doesn't. We're working that regard in far as a studio is concerned, but that horror is kind of like a meta commentary, you know, how the idea of like in this movie specifically, it's like the plays of the idea that mass media itself is a source of horror. You know, which is very prescient because if you look now mass media, like even though world's not as violent as it was all 30, 40, 50 years ago, it's like we're exposed to more violence now. So our perception is that it is. Yeah. Completely agree with that one. Yeah, I think that one's that one's been used so much. Technology is evil or your your kind of view of life has like just become distorted through mass media. I mean, Robocop was doing that all the way back in the 80s. I think it's how you use it. That's it. Yeah, using AI to replace our like artistic folks instead of mundane everyday remedial tasks and then letting people do creative ventures is a better way to use AI, I think, but you know, whatever. Tomato tomato. Yeah. I want my likewood terminators. That's all I'm saying. If we're going to go down, I want a T1 or no way. T1000. Yeah, I was right. Yeah. Yeah, another trope. I'm sorry. Another trope we see here is the ineffectual authorities just like in all the other and so many other rest Craven movies, the adults, the police, everybody is just pretty much useless and it's up to the hero to stop the stop the villain. Yeah, how about the sun pretty
Dicking everything and the dad's still like, you know what? You need to go home and I'm like, I You might want to listen to him. He's like dreamed all this. Okay. Have you come with me? That's against regulations Our party wants to break into some place that he's just like yeah, more it is a shit Fuck it. It's not like we have body cams. All right guys. They all joke So how they know you guys know what a file is sport, right? Yeah, straight into the garbage He didn't say that but that's what he meant when one last row by I put down here was a creative kill sequences You know with the body hopping we got people being terrorized or electrical appliances Over the top 80s horror excess Yeah extreme in this. It's fun That does remind me in this One of the documentaries on the shelf factory They mentioned that he had West Craven had an incredibly hard time getting this past the MPAA As are like he submitted it 1718 times or whatever and it kept coming back is X rating And I was like this isn't really that bad and apparently a lot of it had to do with him killing the guards Dude there's a whole documentary on that too Not involving this film but the whole rating process as a whole Yeah, it's complete bullshit. Yeah, some Just stuff. Just really depends who you get Gotta learn to pay these people off. I think that's what it is always I mean just just do it. I mean They're crooked. Do you guys will be crooked too? It's not like you're killing kids or anything. It's just who gives your shit movies Killing I mean that I would I would say that's bad. I don't know how you feel about it. I think it's awful. What? Yeah, okay? And the kid I'm glad we're on the same page I'm glad we're we're there on that one I wrote we're meeting in the middle and then I wrote some trivia down here. This is terrible I cannot believe I'm a cement hard and I wrote this one. He guess what? trivia about this movie mega death plays a song in it That's trivia. That's trivia. We didn't know it until you told us that's true We already spoiled that one but uh, yeah, and I completely called mega death like uh, what did I call? I didn't call Kmart Put posters. Yeah, posters fucking posters Oh man Chris puts words in my mouth and I just agree Yeah, that's what I said I'm not saying you enjoy killing kids or anything. No, but I did it's an accident Listen when there is one box of fruity pebbles left You got to get your own you got to get it fuck them Yeah, you know and one one more fun fact here is despite the mixed reception shocker remains a cult classic love by fans of off the wall He's horror That's something chat gbd came up for me. So I mean these things are Getting put to use here Somebody open concept feels similar to late horror films like fallen and Jason goes to hell we talked about fallen I looked it up. It's called fallen Falling down. Yeah, falling down falling in up falling in Ah All right, well at the end of the day before we go on the museum These listeners out here need to know for recommending this Brad you picked it. What do you say? Even though it wasn't as great as I remembered as a teenager I watch again as adult. I still recommend it Especially if you're a horror fan and a West Craven fan which if you're a West Craven fan you've seen this So why am I recommending it to you? But you know, I recommended it. It's fun. It's crazy Yeah, yeah, I don't recommend it. I still recommend it It could be cut a little bit I go with you there, but it's fun It's it's fun. There's nothing bad about it really Got one liner's got cool kills All right, I think you guys are high. I do not recommend this alone I thought this movie felt like three hours. I was like fuck. It was entertaining at parts But it's so just choppy and weird and makes no sense now I do have an asterisk next that if this movie's playing with all your friends around and you're drinking this is probably Oh man actually Most films that we don't recommend we have a caveat of with friends. Yes Yes, we haven't we haven't really picked anything that's like bad That we just because we like bad films we haven't like picked yeah bad a field earth could be fun with friends so Could be Like there's most films that we picked are more fun with friends Yeah, the only thing that can get that like the only true really really bad films that I would like You can't do this with friends or you're by yourself are boring films. Yeah, because they're the worst and I think well There was that one film that we all three hated Until we got on here and talked and I can't remember what it was. It was a fan one The one where the tires are always flat in the car that was driving me nuts with the big neck big chin guy in it It's got like shitty karate whatever Wow, it's not samurai cop. That's all I remember no I recommend it. Yeah, it was samurai cop seven days a week Samurai cop was rough by yourself and just just one of the most amazing bad films ever put on To like anyone who oh my god, it just keeps getting better after watching yeah Yeah, see Samurai cop is one of those weird ones where I didn't fully enjoy it by myself talking with you guys I'm talking about yeah, you might be right Yeah, this is like I'm like talking Yeah, and then talking about with you guys made it so much better that I think I could go and rewatch it Because I would just think about us talking about it. Yeah, imagine you're in the bar It's speaking the same Rick off and all of a sudden there's naked people doing it in the same bed Just I don't know where then the guy gets his hand cut off and there's ninjas and The guy finds out his father is a Korean or something. I don't remember the exact plot but it just goes Gonna wrap holes in sanity. I just remember that really well I remember a lot but that really long sex scene that's like just way too long in that movie where it's just like That I'm uncomfortable for the actor. Yeah, it's meant to be enjoyed with your bros if you know what I mean Yeah, you get the whole hands and the water bed while you watch it. Yeah, they just go you really go to the bar and it gets especially towards the end where they're hopping around through TVs and like nuclear weapons going off when he's jumping into a newscast and the Televangel everything. I think this would be so much more fun with people. Yeah Get some boozing. Yeah, or whatever. Yeah, or die. Let's Or don't I mean hey, why do you don't? Yeah, I don't care Um, just don't tell me what to do Okay, if all your friends are new, it doesn't mean you have to But you can if you want to Especially when Chris pressures you. Yeah I just endorse half of him paint As much as you can Yep, let's go on the museum of that dude. I was at I was at the con and there's this new rust product That's really cool. It's like a three-part rust Thing and this guy he's like do not do this near your face and the guy goes home unless I want to and I go It's not a fun high and the guy behind the booth goes no it sucks Oh perfect, let's go on the museum This was the second time I've had to reclaim my property from you That belongs in a museum So do you This is the part of the show where we go out in the film jungle like Indie and bring something back to our hey It's not that bad Wing of the museum. This is one of my favorite theme names to say by the way um Brad you picked it It's just like recommendations go ahead and go first even we didn't talk about him Even though we didn't talk to him very much. I'm going with the coach He gave even over the top performance and he's just an enjoyable memorable That's what I think I remember besides like that the crazy action scene is the coach I think it's the worst acting in the film when he's taken over But it's the most Yeah, coach is good. He was the only death that where I felt something emotional Because like when the girl dies, I'm like I don't care. But when coach died, I was like Dude when the family dies. It's just it's just out of nowhere You trying to just like thrown into it you don't even know the family. There's no build up Just come to his mom What are you trying to say Brad? You don't like women? We've established this Oh yeah, I forgot uh, I was gonna say Nancy Drew But Heather laying in camp is in this for like Three seconds as a victim at the very beginning. Yeah, right now. It's not a note. I forgot to add to this Oh, it's fine victim Wait, what? All right Chris, what do you got for the museum? Oh, but. The trench coat lock picking scene. Dude, they just turn the corner and they're fucking dressed like they're going to blade. I don't know where they just all own trench coats. Just leather dusters. It's pretty much what it is. And I know Stephen really likes the next quote. So I'm not going to steal it from him. No, no, you can say that quote. Go ahead. Yeah. Where he's like, it's locked and just pick it. That's a felony. No, that's a lock. No, pick it. It's just a really great little scene, I think. It's the timing too. How that guy just like how rhino, by the way, I looked it up. His friend's name is rhino. And I'm like, that's awesome. Yeah, he's a cool guy. Cool cat. I'm sorry. I'm going to go with the laysboy because that was the, that was the part where we get into this movie where I go, what the fuck are we doing? Yeah, it's like you're watching P Lee playhouse and cherry tries to kill P Lee or something. Feet start stretching out of the bottom of it. The eyes that come up of the seams and the top. And I'm like, what are we doing? That was as serious like Freddie crew stuff. That was great. It's just like, okay. Yeah. See, if this is a stab, here's the thing that's so irritating about this is Freddie establishes his powers in the first one. And I feel like the first three Freddy's, maybe even the fourth, like we understand his power. You know, he has all this stuff they can do in the dream world. He can kill, if he kills you in the dream world, blah, blah, blah, you give him power. And then he has some ability to cross over, you know, like she pulls him back over and everything like that. But like his powers are limited and they're slowly established. You know, like, you know, licking Heather Lening camp in the phones. But is that in her mind? Did that really happen to the phone? You know, stuff like that. I think a lot of it's like in and out of dreams like when you're, you're dozing off and you're confused on reality. I agree. This one. No, what's Craven just, he's just like, I'm throwing everything I have at this pal at this canvas, everything, every color, fuck it. I'm a, and this was supposed to be a franchise. This is a horse picket was supposed to be the next Freddy Krueger for him and man did it fail spectacularly. I think I think if they want to skip the TV bit in this one. Yeah, I think the body hopping's enough. Yeah, I think that's a cool idea. I mean, fallen, that's all they did. And that made it really well. Yeah, right. Yeah, nine years later too. So maybe they seen this and they're like, let's throw out the TV idea. Maybe not making an electric demon. Yeah. Sorry, Brad. Yeah, I'm gonna say the TV hopping took this equal if you forget everyone. Where he's like been learning his electric powers. Yes, exactly like, you know, you like continue the war download. Yeah, he pops into a TV and he's like, guess what I learned to do. And he's like, you can say him do stuff on the TV. Yeah. Yeah, just too much, just way too much. And you know what? I'm going to say this. I think Peter Berg is, is way too goofy for this. Because you can't, you can't have a goofy ass bad guy and a goofy ass main star. Because it just doesn't work. Like if it would have been like a really good straight guy, like, I don't know who could have played this at the time. But it just, you can, he makes goofy faces. He's just kind of a goofball. It's not working. He did not work for me in this at all. No, this seems like a dark. I think Mitch, uh, Pilegi did really, really good as pinker. I like him. Great. He is scary. Yeah, he's physically intimidating. He is a scary man and he looks very angry. He plays a lot of tough guys for a reason. Yeah. Dude's in good shape, even when I saw him in this documentary, which I think was done closer like 2000, I don't know, 15, 16 something like that. Yeah, he was still in great shape, probably in his late 50s. That was impressed. Or maybe even 60s. I don't know. He looked great shape. I think it's his face too. He just always looks mad. He looks like he has face muscles. Oh, he's got like one of those things that work out your jaw. Have you seen those? Yeah, those are ridiculous. It's going to be your guys Christmas gift this year. Jaw workout things. What do you say? Now I have a wild to find jaw anywhere. We all need better wild to find jaws for these videos. I've seen so many pictures of me tagged lately since they've been like, oh, I got a lose weight. I look 40 finally good. Lord. It's things up on you. All right, that will end this week. I have no idea what we're doing in the future. So we'll announce it when we get to it. So remember to be kind and rewind. You're listening to the Geekscape Network. [BLANK_AUDIO]
