Sex and the City S3E1: “Where There’s Smoke…” with Courtney O’Donnell
1h 5m 33s
The podcast episode explores the enduring cultural impact of *Sex and the City*, focusing on themes of female independence, romantic desire, and the evolution of dating in modern times. Through a rewatch of the iconic "Staten Island firefighter" episode, the hosts analyze how characters like Carrie and Charlotte navigate emotional vulnerability, self-assertion, and the tension between appearing independent and secretly longing for a romantic savior. Samantha’s bold, unapologetic actions in the firehouse—such as directly demanding sex and embracing her fantasies—serve as a powerful commentary on female agency and empowerment. The episode also critiques the modern dating landscape as a numbers game, where rejection and lack of meaningful connection breed frustration and emotional exhaustion. The hosts highlight how the show’s portrayal of relationships reflects a shift from passive victimhood to active self-determination, while still acknowledging the deep-seated emotional needs that persist. The discussion extends to the rise of influencer culture, with Carrie’s role as a media figure serving as a foundational example of how personal branding and visibility shape modern womanhood. Ultimately, the episode underscores that despite progress in gender equality, the desire for love, connection, and rescue remains a universal human experience—just as it did in the show’s original era. The humor, nostalgia, and emotional depth of the original series continue to resonate, offering both a nostalgic lens and a reflective counterpoint to today’s dating and social dynamics.
I wish that they would reduce tax on the city with AI. - No, wait, they did. - Oh, they did? - Yeah, and just like that. - Oh, there we go. There we go. (laughing) (upbeat music) - Welcome back to Girls Rewatch. - A podcast about girls and girls on TV. - I'm Amelia Rattale. - I'm Evan Lazarus and we have our dear, dear, dear friend. - Making a grand return to the podcast. - I'm glad you were episode four. - Seven? - Seven? - Craxidate. - Craxidate. - Yeah, kind of the big one, all-timer, and honored. - One of the mics was broken and it's a terrible audio experience for everyone. - I've relistened it. - Awesome. - So recently it's some of the worst things I've ever done on a microphone. - That's okay, 'cause I like was really good. So yeah, it made up for it. - It's like, you made it work. We've re-recorded so many episodes, but not that one. - Yeah, well, this was before the AI boom, and I would have said, let's just, you know, put me in there, replace me with AI. - Yeah, of course. - Yeah. - 'Cause I support that. - That's really good. - I actually think like, it's funny, and I wish that they would do, reduce x in the city with AI. - Am I allowed to talk to you? - Oh, they did? - Oh, there we go. - It was AI. - Craxidate. (laughing) - I thought you were gonna, like, pull out your matiglasses and be like, I have to wear this for all, I guess, if you want to record this? - Yeah. (laughing) - We are kicking off season three today. - I'm so happy to be back. - Me too, it feels kind of random that we're like in the middle of it. To be in the middle of something. I'm always at the beginning of the month. - The watching the show. - Wow, season three, please, come on. - Season three is actually like, so six divided by two is three? - Yeah. - Okay. - Yeah. - Thank you. - Sorry, I'm feeling crazy. - You did have to pull your calculator out for all. - I know, thank you, I'm getting better. - Well, yeah, we all are. - Practice makes progress, Michelle Decker said that. - Oh, well, what are smoke? That's the title of that episode. - Where there's smoke, this is, of course, the famous Staten Island firefighter episode. - I think there's a lot of people's first four-way in Desai and Island. - Yeah. - I can't truly discern any media outside of there, except, of course, with Pete David's end. - Right, which was maybe 20 years later. - Yeah, I'm surprised I'm attached to this. - The "Mod Appetale" movie. - You can go ahead and name it. - King of Staten Island. - Wait, what is, she in that movie? - Is it "Mod Appetale" famously? - I don't know, but it's said the way you said, it sounds like the movie she directed, and I was like, that just can't be possible. Like, I don't know if it was real, but that just can't be possible. - She directed that, that was her feature day, you. - I actually do think this is the first time, like Staten Island as a concept entered my brain, and like-- - Of course. - You know, they don't really do a good job painting a robust picture. It's sort of a stereotype. - Yeah, they've really played with-- - Honey, but you've been to Staten Island, I tell you, it's a stereotype. - It is? - It's walking stereotypes. It's Italian, with cigarettes, and something on the mind. Probably much of meatballs. - You're right. - Have you spent a lot of time in Staten Island? - No, but my roommate's boyfriend. They just broke up last week, but he was from Staten Island. - It's a positive breakup, so it's like no problem, you guys. - Oh yeah, cool, I love to know more about that after. - He's just busy with his tour, so it's like, they agree to kind of step away. - Cool, and he's from Staten Island? - He's from Staten Island. - Okay, and was living there the whole time. - A whole lot of Staten Island talk. - Wait, really, you know what, I would like to know how to get there from here, if I ever need to. - Right. - Like I don't know how to get. - He's never been there. - We want you to gas. - Okay, okay, okay, okay, if you had a gas. - I feel like it has to involve the path train. - Huge. - Is that true? - I'm not gonna correct you until you're done with it. - Okay, so I take a train to the path train. - Okay, love. - When I get there, I have to take a ferry to the other side of Staten Island. - Here's the thing, that's absolute option. Is not the correct one, but you could do it. - Tell me how to get there right back in there. - I'm going up to that, I'm getting a canole. - You kind of want to find a poor, so it's something on the East River, you can go over to Hudson. And yes, so I guess if you take a path. - But is it only by boat? - No, no, no, there's also a bridge. - I've actually been to Staten Island for one day 'cause the host of an open mic that me and I've been met and actually invited me. - It was Staten Island, not Long Island? - Yeah. - Oh, yeah. - It was Long Island, girl, by the way. - Whatever, whatever. Would you ever date someone who lives in Staten Island, like firefighter? - I would totally, I think that's amazing. I'm just a little worried about the like, travel situation. - Yeah. - The commute. - You're already commuting from LA. - Yeah, so it's like I would have to come here or fly into JFK, then go to, it would just be. - Bus, club, another bus, another ferry. - I bust back from the Newark Airport last Saturday. - Can you imagine what parts of New Jersey I was in? It took me two and a half hours to get home. And I stopped at the Oculus, of course. - You must have made your own day of it because you could not two and a half hours from Newark back to Brooklyn. - I kept missing the bus twice. - There's a train, mama. So I didn't, I finally got to the train. - Okay. - I finally, I found the pass train. - Newark is the worst airport to fly into. Like, truly, don't. Like sometimes, or like if I fly out, I'm like, I'll just do it. And I'm like, it's actually worth five thousand more dollars to fly into JFK. - No, let's hurry. - You know, he's built on a landfill. So in a race. - No wonder it's disgusting. When I ran through it. - Brutures outwards. - Oh, like Florida. - Uh-huh. It's like, Newark is a lot like. - Newark is literally just like Disney World. It was built on a swamp. That's sweet, sweet, it's fucking sick. Like, I hate that. No, you know what I hate is the-- - The plot of this episode. - Yeah, that's so bad about it. - The film on a fairy clearly being on a sound stage. - We'll do it all. We'll do a little robust review for the girls back at home. - Oh, yeah, what's the intro? - Three, two, one. Carrie is anointed to be the host in charge of a firefighter calendar contest. Adam's on an island. So she takes the girls out for an amazing event. At the event, they all run into trials and tribulations with some look like Samantha trying to hook up with a hot himbo. And Carrie has to balance her professional judgment when it comes to being a judge, of course. And also dating a fellow judge. And then they all partake in an amazing spontaneous event or back on the mainland where they have to battle with their own white knighthood, which Charlotte endeavors an act of trying to wake her hero where Carrie and Miranda kind of take theirself. And independent and use that as a guard to protect themselves from ever being rescued. And Samantha does has fun in a firehouse. - Oh, does she have fun? - How about you guys? - Yeah, I think this episode presents the question, where are we at with fairy tales in the year 2000? - Right. - What are we doing? Are we still waiting to be saved, snow white? - Right. - Aladdin style, does she get saved? - She saves him. - Cinderella. - It's sort of the motif, I would say. We're playing with in this episode. One thing that I felt was really interesting that has stood the test of time, 26 years later, is sort of the rant. Carrie's a writer, she's somewhat New York famous. And the type of events she gets asked to go to are judging a firefighter contest. I'm like, I feel like that is very apropos to what being an influencer or person is. That was the first thing I noticed in this episode. I was like, so we've always had our influence. - Right, yes. - And then so it's like her, who's the other judge? Rosie? - It's a Rosie O'Donnell type, but no, it's not Rosie. It's, I mean, it's a politician, and there's a, oh, who is that there? - There's like another person, and then there's also the politician. - Yeah, I don't know who, I don't know if they believe it. - But the little celebrity involved, very much. - She's like, when you're a small celebrity, you get invited to big event. - Yeah. - It's like, okay, can I get a plus one? Actually, plus three, 'cause my girls are kind. - Yeah. - Yeah. - I'm like, so there was an email, she had to call to get the plus three, right? - Right. - Yeah, yeah, so someone calls her and she's like, "We have this great opportunity." - Well, that was email girl. - Oh. - Why do you think email, what? - Probably 2003 is when email got on the scene. - It's making email on the scene. How do you think it was? - It definitely is 2000, but it's not like, I don't, I think there was a call involved in this whole thing. - There has to be a call. - Yeah. - Oh, you take it all back. - Well, I do think there is email though. - Okay, they probably have it in the big Dell computers. - Yeah. - But like, you know that Miranda doesn't have email. Well, no, she's a lawyer, so she has email. - They obviously don't have email. - You know what, why wasn't Samantha invited on her own PR girl bossitude? - Because this is not an, this is like a trashy event. Like, this is like us getting invited to like, judge a hot dog eating contest in Jersey City, you know? Like, we, and they'd be like, "Oh, you guys are the host of like, "Girls Rewatch" podcast, right? Like, yeah, we'd love to, no, you're just judging. You're not even eating, you're going, and they're asking you to post one post. - Yeah. - And you are like, I'm honored, I guess this is like a fun thing to do on a Saturday. - Here's a story or a grid? - Hmm, story. - Collaborial. - Collaborial, oh my god. - It's six reels a day for the next 25 days. Does that work? - Funny, sign me up, please. As long as there's a hotel involved. - No, no, no. - No, no. - Oh, I'm in and out. - You're in and out. It's only Jersey City. - I know, but you want to see the local sites. - Spend your time. - I've never been to Jersey City. - Me either. - I want to win it this time, it's right, you know? - That's being a list of places that we haven't visited. - Yeah, well okay, and I've been to one more place and we just move on. Is that like, I remember my first job in New York, this one girl had just moved to Hoboken. It was like trying to be like, everyone should move to Hoboken. - Love. - Didn't catch on, obviously. But she was really pushing for that. And I just feel like that was a big thing of like, Hoboken's a new Brooklyn. And where do we stand with that? - Okay, no. I actually have an update on this. - Why? [BLANK_AUDIO]
I was at the not suitable for work launch party the shows already been cancelled up. That's kind of like going to the satin So by the way, thank you so much, but a guy there a guy there had a cocktail and was like Cornering me and being like so I live in Hoboken. It's actually awesome like I have all the amenities in my building I'm like every it took me 25 minutes to get here like you should move to Hoboken All are Marys by their choices today. Like kind of I know and it's like stop. It's like it's like a fucking like pyramid scheme It's like yeah, the more people you get to move there the more like well you can't move out until you get someone else to move in So do you have to check that into their it's so Mary K. I'm like I get it But I'm not gonna do it. No, and also it only took me 25 minutes. It's like And they're always like, oh, we are building has like a bus that takes me straight to the train station I'm like that's we're not in this isn't the Facebook camp That's like what colleges are like well, we're in our way from the city, but every Friday we got a bus that'll take you there Yeah, it's like for why? Why? Yeah, we're kind of in the middle of the city You guys went to a two-lane together, right? Yeah, not at the same time because in a way, but I tried to older than me You're a different world Yeah, in our way kind of we were well, I think about Hoboken. It's like it's such an artless society It's like the people that choose to live there don't they don't want anything that you could easily like the reasons that anyone would actually want to suitably move to New York for yes It's a hollow echo is place that is true about the like okay, I want my well, I'm divided I know we're talking about it for all things. Yes, but like I am divided between like the amenity building life versus like right Character home in New York Where do you guys land on that is amenities are always they're always being they they're Gorgeous and photos what happens to get use and abuse and they're like always shells of their former self I want to move into my apartment the first apartment. I was moved into New York base in Bushwegg I had these following amenities a boxing ring of rock climbing wall two indoor pools two outdoor pools I know the building the Denizen. Yes, yes, what none of them are usable. No, that's true. Yeah, they run out of money They always will promise you the world they'll promise you to sky and you have to settle you have to settle amongst the stars I don't know anybody who has ever lived in those buildings Who's properly made use of the amenities until they're like I'm moving out in a month because I'm over I am not priced Actually that building in particular my friend lives there and I went recently They have like a dog grouping station and he's like he was like, it's actually amazing because like it's basically like the art He's he's it's like too expensive and he's also like it's kind of in the middle of nowhere for me But but there's like there's a pet smart insight. There's a pet smart You can like rent vacuums You can like also he's like by the way all the art you see in the hallways is like People in the buildings art and you can like buy it and I'm like, okay, like I'm not buying this like Piece of converse that just says like pride on it But I will say like I the glitz and glamor of it does sometimes learn me in right yeah, I mean This is the difference between me and Evan is Evan's like I want to be a New Yorker And I'm like I want to be bad the equinox like that is my thing Yes, it is but look did they have in they have in house podcast studio with blink walls They do no, that's what we have I was gonna say I honestly probably think they do I there was this guy that was like showing me he's like I'm filming in spilling it has like a podcast studio and a recording studio Like that's my god should be illegal for like men in finance to get like Get used out of that to find out they're being given the mics. Yes, it's not good. I'm not in finance Uh-oh charla who she dates this episode. Oh, this is a good guy. Well this whole episode I mean this is when I was iconic episodes eight well. I guess they're all pretty iconic in sex in the city But this is a really amazing intro. I always see the beep beep sequence about Every single time I watch like a super cut of this show. Is that the firefighter episode? Yeah, this fire fire episode Where she's like doing this bins under the disco ball? Yes, yes, the dancing in this episode. I did find kind of inspiring and uplifting Yes, but let's get into um. They're on the boat. It's a calendar. It's calendar guy week So it they're taking guys from every neighborhood in Manhattan They're all going to Staten Island to then be judged for what burrows the best or what neighborhood's the best which wins again I just remember this is ultimately not this gloves really. It's really about that. They're just like there's no real actual hate There's no real actual call but to say I feel so Samantha is mr. July that part I know yeah, well she Enates the guy to be mr. July, but it's actually again never confirmed. Right. It's not confirmed today Close watching of the show. I just feel like the writers like we're fucking Hi that day I am obsessed with the like butch pigtail girl emceeing the night Be like don't you love this one all right. Let's keep it going judges like she had pizzazz She knew her gig. She was quite fine. Yeah, she I know okay, so we we get to the sequence carry is She's given half a half scores the politician can't keep his eyes off carry And we were introduced to carry next love interest, which is very fun and in this sequence we also have um Samantha Miranda and Charlotte walk up to the front of sage Samantha's making eye contact with the guy at the big arms Charlotte is disgruntled because she can't handle blatant sexuality and Miranda's just she does have him fun. Yeah She is just having fun. They're having their little staten island ice teas Charlotte, I mean Samantha claims she's like I want to show him my lorman had it. Oh Good. Well, you know what I loved is like obviously Miranda's plotline is this is she's getting laser eye surgery Yes, but we haven't seen Miranda in glasses in the first two seasons And so they use the opening of this episode to be like we can't move back Charlotte. I can't see. I don't have my glasses That's so and I'm like that's such a like shoe-in to be like something's gonna happen I do think like Miranda has such glasses face that it's ultimately believable Even though she wasn't wearing them for the last two seasons that she would be needing A lasex surgery absolutely that girls a contact based of woman She's amazing on that working But yeah, so carries like I don't want a data politician I'm just went through a really bad breakup. This guy is flirting and charming and I like him But like he's obsessed with like being like I'm the guy like he's so Polit like I'm a man who loves to do good and she's like I just can't right now Well, I think also it's like this is a good time to bring up like the fact that like She wants or has no interested like local government now, you know international politics anything she hasn't voted before It's cool that it's like a running gag. They're like oh, I know what game we should play in this episode Carey doesn't care about politics. Yeah exactly, but I just have to say like John Slattery who plays yeah This guy is so attractive and really does it for me and like I mean, I forget like he was probably in like four or five episodes this season right four or five Yeah, perfect amount. Yeah, but I was like I could have done more of him He is like quite hot in a way some people that stick around for much longer aren't right And I like I think his like personality is more charming than a lot of the guy personalities week at 100 percent But they were definitely are ultimately not a match because like I don't think I mean it probably happens all the time, but like a politician should be with someone who's never voted or doesn't even know like her Distract you imagine a politician being like yeah, I'm with a sex writer. Yeah, like it wouldn't go well. No. No. No, I especially 2000 honey No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Well, that's actually different. I'm not lying to me. I guess the correct. Oh, yes, wait, he's not with, well, uh, yeah, he's too unclassy for him. Oh, right. Of course. Yeah. Of course.
- Oh, but I am so good. - They're running us on the walls of your girl. - You're so good. - But okay, the funniest part of this scene where they're at the event is Miranda and Kari being like, it's time to go to the politicians obsessed with me. Let's gather our girls and it's like Samantha went home with the hung and then they're like, "Oh my god, Charlotte's so drunk. She looks so fucking crazy." You go over to her, she's just like bouncing really cute and singing the song and they're like, she's fucking drunk. - I always block out from Charlotte to express herself. It takes a lot of time and I see. - That's what I look like on zero drinks. It's like at the club, like. - Charlotte has this amazing interaction. I mean, Miranda and Kari have this amazing interaction where Kari goes, "I just, he's not cool. I can't be with him." She goes, "Where are you talking to me?" He seems, I mean, I think she should give the Pulitzer to another chance. He's funny, he's very cute. He goes, "Well, I didn't want to tell you this, but I thought I'd give someone a thumbs up." And she goes, "We're out of here." - Oh my god. - That was just good. - Yeah. - So he's probably, at least maybe like five or six years older than, or like 10. Like he's definitely older, an older gentleman. - Yeah, he'll be like, "Burn Dominie at the end of his term." - Thank you for bringing that up. - Yeah, thank you so much. Yeah, I forgot that that was sort of the thing. It's like, he's not cool enough for me or like. - Well, it's so good. It's so easy to write off a man. You can always find a flag. - 100%. This is so funny in this episode. I'm jumping out a little bit, but like how many times she like basically says no to him that any kind of keeps coming back, like these kind of shows made me really think that I could just like say no to a guy. I'm not ready. I'm not ready. And then they would just still just show up and like. - I know. The most shocking part of this episode is the amount of time guys are willing to make any move at all compared to like, now because they're so scared of rejection on any level today. That it's like for him to be like, "I'm waiting outside for you. I'm waiting for 10 more seconds." I guess you really don't like me. - I didn't mean you so really to really do this so much more. - Yeah, well, it's like, it's actually insane that when he just said, "Can I get your number?" I was like, "That's so romantic." It's like, "That's so. " (laughing) He loves her. It's like, "Yeah." - Yeah, when he's like, "Well, how about this? You don't have to say yes now, but I'm going to bring a car." - I'm still waiting outside for you. - I was like, "Oh my God, can you imagine if someone did that?" - Well, my thought is that do you think these shows kind of played into even in a way like, this section is kind of like the inception of like, why partially men have stopped doing this? Because there's all about like, female independence, right? And when women were more reliant on men to be like, even just as provider itself, when the terms of power change, men's dynamic with the power also change. Like, they're willing to want a chase. Because, yeah, even now, like, even if you look at the Steve and Miranda relationship, it's like Miranda as a provider in a relationship. So, it always feel like the provider is the one who also has to pursue in tandem. And then, I think these shows-- - So, you're blaming us, right? Like, you're just saying, like, I should get myself. (laughing) - Well, I think that's like why they're like, Steve and Miranda's relationship ends up being so interesting is that like, there is this like mutual like respect. Well, it's like, every relationship carries in. It's like, guy chases, she chases. Like, it's very, I guess what I'm trying to say, is that Miranda and Steve's relationship is like a healthy attachment. And like, I don't know, what the fuck? - Your team Miranda and Steve. - I think it's okay, it's okay. - I just think Carrie is like silly. I don't know. - Carrie's like purposely putting herself her hell at every corner. - Yes. - Every turn. - Literally. - Every corner. Is she just keeps going in the corner? - Yeah. - So, how does the night end? - I'm just, I don't know what this is. - Okay, so they're leaving. They leave Samantha behind. 'Cause Samantha runs into Mr. July. - Oh, so funny when-- - And it's a part of her type of the hymn bow. - The hymn bow and the horn. - When she's like, bump set. So, he can spike her like with the flirting. And he's like, oh, you want my shirt? Yeah. So, this location might have Merchor. Maybe one of those places, whatever. And Samantha's like, aha, honey. So, this is a time, or this is what we're doing. - Yeah. - Oh, I love the sequence first. She's like, so how did you sign up for it, too? Well, my sister's really thought it would be a good idea for me to get involved this year. Oh, well, you know, what month do you think you got? October, board, and October. I'm thinking July, 'cause you're so hot. - Yeah. - There's nothing behind the eyes. - He's like, I'm gonna get that tomorrow, just wait. But then he's amazing at sex. So, she's like, oh, these sad men do a difference. - I love it every time Samantha has really good sex her hair gets curly afterwards. - Yeah, she has amazing hair the next day. - Oh, please, come on. - That was the most shocking part is these girls are out so late in "Sat in Island." They're studying abroad for the night. Charlotte's the most drunk she's ever been in her life for some reason. - Well, famously, to fairy ends at midnight. - Right, but still. - How they get to be? - The way they're like, at the diner at night, I'm sharp, all together again. No group chat back then. - Well, that's what I wanna say. How are we studying at that time? - Is it phone? It certainly doesn't feel like email. - Maybe we can involve email. - Did they agree that night? Tomorrow we'll meet here for breakfast? - Yeah. - But I'm just like, but when you wake up the next day, that's when you text, so we're not making it. - We'll never really get into our minds. It's just not gonna be accessible for us. We'll never get there. - Oh, I swear. But that's gonna make it to have this a critic seminar of, are we supposed to be safe now that we're like, allowed to have debit cards? - Yes. - Oh my. I mean, one to again, like it when it was iconic lines in Sex and the City. - Yeah. - Where Charlotte is completely devastated by the reality that she's been waiting since she was 15 years old, waiting for her white night. Where is she? And then the rest of the group is completely shocked by her like wanting to give up her independence? - Well, I think also what's interesting is that like, there's so much like putting down of Charlotte's sort of Elizabethan, like, her idea of like her life, which is to like find a husband and get married, but like that is essentially what many of the other women want. It's just not as blatant. I mean, especially with Carrie, like she wants that too. - It's so classic girl to be like, making fun of your friend who's obsessed with idealization. - Yeah. - Because you're like, well, that's not gonna happen. You're so stupid for thinking that we while you're like, "Fuck, that's like all I want." - Yeah, or it's like the thing of like, you see in others what you hate in yourself. - Oh my god. - But I mean, I understand they're like frustration with her, but I think like, I mean, I still think, feel that way 26 years later, like it might not look like I'm sitting here being like, "Where's my man?" And like, I'm like fucking making him homemade like cough drops, but like, I do think that there's like something about that. That's true. - Right. - Or even like, I feel like with like my career, like my life, like I'm just like, there'll be a moment when like, it's the like happy ending. - Right. - Yeah. - It's just so contemporary just conversation. - Yeah. - And it really does remind you that like in New York, like I think womeners, I mean, everyone is kind of like subjected to singlehood here. And like in perpetuity, and you often view people that are able to find a relationship as the lucky ones who are being saved almost. - Yeah. And then you meet people who are dating for 10 years, and you're like, "Well, that sounds awful." - Yeah. (laughing) - That is true. Like, I don't think there's any good things that could happen. I think whatever you do, it's not the right choice. - Wow. - Yeah. - That is a terrible place to be. - So, you're a nihilist. - So, I'm gonna go that later, but yes. - Yeah. - 100%. - Yeah, it's just that it's interesting like, terrible for these like girls who often like find themselves grappling with. - Yeah. - And I often like notice that karaoke is like always like, fronting something that she feels completely, differently internally. - Yeah. - And like, you were getting out that where it's like, she, she said, "It's like bold statements." She goes to Charlotte and she goes, "What if we're supposed to save ourselves?" And she goes, "That's absolutely terrible." - Yeah. - It's like, "Well, she doesn't want it." Like, she tries to save herself and then she like, at the end of the episode, like, a man saves her. - Mm-hmm. - And I guess it's just like letting go of real, it's like the duality of this situation. - Yeah. - I think like who are you in the situation of like, do you try and present as like, oh, I'm independent and it's no problem and I don't care. And then secretly want it. Or do you like actively consciously think like, "Oh, like, I want to save myself of course." Where you're like, "Oh, I'm a little princess." Short install. - I think I'm the former. Like, I relate to Carrie in the sense that she's like, trying to put up these boundaries, trying to do things differently. She's like trying to like, be her own independent person. And then like she just sort of keeps finding herself in situations where she like desires like a savior. - Mm-hmm. - And I think I feel that way. - Why do you, why do you think you feel that way? - So you can't ask me that like that. (laughter) Well, I think I'm like, I'm definitely, I think you're eldest daughter, right? - Yeah. - Yeah, I really relate to that. Like in terms of like, someone who's like, become like, over hyper hyper individualist. - And hyper independent as a pepper response. - Yes, exactly. And like, I find that it's like really hard for me to ask people for like help. And like, especially with like dating. Like, I feel like I've gone like so the other way. I'm like, I'm like, I'm actually so happy alone. But like, bring you someone else into this feels like how? - Like, I was so convinced to build an independent life. But it's like, that I'm so okay with it. But it's like, okay, well, this is what the next 80 years is gonna look like unless you change your ways. - Well, I think it is like, totally true though. Like kind of what you were saying earlier. It's like, we've gone so far in this like, where people are like, you don't need men. Like, there's so many different like flavors to it. But it is like, the hyper independence like, is also like, a far end of the spectrum that like, I don't necessarily know if it's like the right answer. - We always, I feel like ultimately like, also we give ourselves over to like being saved. There's often, it leads to a sense of rejection or regret because you said, oh, I let myself be open to opportunities.
And to finally feel like I can just like relax and like get myself to a situation and often sometimes I feel like I get backfires on us. Yeah. Like in myself to someone in the same breath. Like I will also something is like taking for me in the same moment. It's so painful every time. But you also have to do that to find love. Yeah. It's an endless. I hate this thing. Like friends always are like. Like they're like. It's just a numbers game. Like it really is. Like if you put yours out there. If you yes, you'll get rejected. But think about like us. Right. Think about the person. And I'm like. Okay. You've been in a relationship for seven years. Right. And you met at work. I'm like. That doesn't sound like a lot of numbers. Yeah. Like I actually would rather just like maybe it's like a one and a million chance. Right. A girl we all know went on 75 dates in three weeks. What? And it's and she was able to find her boyfriend out of that. Wait. Yeah. I really played the numbers. Sarah Alderman. Oh. 75 dates and what? Sarah. Like maybe a month. It was like. But she's had a boyfriend for seven years. No. Like shorter than that. And it's because he did 75 dates in a month. 75 hard. She did. 75 hard. I can't even like get that many dates. Like even if I was on there every night. Just trying to make plans. It's like these mother fuckers are like. They don't even live here. They're like in like. Austria on. I swear. How do you stop looking at your partner as a number? Like if you give you also it's the other side of it. It's like. I hope that her relationship is healthy. But also if you look if you're like I gave myself all this opportunity. I found someone that I like. Yeah. Great. That's also it. You played the odds. Good. But also doesn't it like doesn't don't you always feel like you want more of your always looking for some. Like always the hunt of something. Especially the love itself is found in hunting. That's true. I think that definitely is like what the crux of like the dating up problem, which is like that everyone is a number and there's always this idea that there's more like or there's better. Yeah. Inventory. Like. Yeah. It's not good. Which is why I could I understand Carrie being like no no no no no no. And then Miranda being like do you want me to say it and Carrie be like don't say it. And then she's like you're scared of getting hurt again. And the fact that I feel like if that happened to any girl now, they would be able to vocalize that that is what they're experiencing and be kind of okay with it. But the fact that Carrie's like uh huh, I have to go and like is like I'm not processing that and I'm going to go to Staten Island right now instead of dealing with it. It's like whoa girl. But it's like if someone said that I'd be like 100% I wouldn't say that like yeah, I don't want to get hurt. Like I sleep. I don't care. I wait. Sorry about that. Yeah. But she's like I have to go to a different island about this. Yeah. And it's just a proof to herself that she can well I think also there wasn't back then. Maybe like an idea of like not dating like if you didn't work focusing on dating like you were a lesbian or like a loser like a spinster like I think it's very easy nowadays. Like when I say to people like I'm just not really dating that much. They don't like care. Yeah. It's because it's like you and millions. Yes. Right. But like back then it's like Carrie's like wait, I can't like let this stop me from like dating. Yeah. Especially since some time has passed. Wait was I feel like bad for not knowing this but it's her last breakup with big big is like she just was in the Hamptons and saw him with the new girl right. Yeah. That's where we're kind of that. Okay. So that's where we're situated. No, it's sort of reason that she can't even be with him to begin with is because she's still grappling with the breakup. Yeah. Oh yeah. But that would have been like if we think about the what the seasons like it was cold on the boat. That was so I'm thinking like this is maybe the October. Yeah. It's giving that. It's like in November. November even. Yeah. Is it. Is it. We're getting close to voting girls. Oh, there we go. There we go. That might be a good clue for us. Like about as a character. No worries. Um, let's jump into Miranda's plotline with her lay six surgery. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect. Yeah. I mean, it's the same like reckoning as before. I like. I really love this episode in particular because Carrie and Miranda's plots really parallel each other except like the verse and the results ultimately are kind of similar, but the reactants are the thing that feels so different where Miranda she's like has to get lay sick and the whole reasoning and the whole thing is that like Carrie's going to pick her up and not Steve because they're only friends with benefits right now. But Steve is like, I'm also your friend. Like a key part of the sentence is friendship and Miranda's like, no, it's just easier if like Carrie picks me up because she's my friend. Yeah. Then who am I to you? Hmm. She's like, you're a different kind of friend. I have to go. Yeah. And then Carrie cancels and instead of being like, all right, well, Carrie had to cancel so I guess she's like, so I've made four postcards with numbers and I'm going to get into the cab by myself and figure it out because I'm a girl boss. Yes. And I was like, guess girl, get it. No, it's like seriously. That's how I feel. I remember one time I needed to go to the hospital in LA, like I was like, really ill. And I was like felt so I was like, hey, like texting like a friend like so fine if you're not free. But like, would there be any chance you could drive in the hospital? And like, of course she was just like, yeah, like, but like there is this like, I relate to Miranda in the sense of like the asking for help or like, that's like an incredibly vulnerable feeling. And especially the feeling of like maybe being rejected, which is also what Carrie's dealing with. Like lying on him. Yeah. Yeah. Or like to feel the soft love of him and then be like, I sabotage this. I want the soft love of Steve so bad. Yeah. Of course. Of course. You want that. You want that. So he's so sweet. I feel it. It's interesting. I do think that's like that. Also. It's so funny. You'll see some of you have different reactions to see like so many people receiving it's like so beta. Yeah. To Miranda. And it's so off putting for some people. But a lot of people, I think it's weirdly, I think in Brooklyn, especially people like when someone's like a little gay with that like flamboyant or flamboyant or like or in touch with their family. I want a gay boyfriend. Exactly. Or some man with like some sort of emotional worlds over finance. Yes. Yeah. 100%. It's just it's so it's like it really is like kind of actually the show. I will say. I don't I think like we're in a microcosm that wants it. Look, I don't think a lot of there's a lot of women in New York, especially don't want that. No. Yeah. That's what a materialist is about. Yeah. Yeah. There we go. I got to check that out. I love Dakota Johnson when she does things. Oh, but then Steve does shows up for her. He does. She does. Because Carrie calls. So first of all, if my friends called my friends with benefits to be like, can you go together? Yeah. I'd be so fucking pissed off. No, truly. Yeah. And he's walking in and wearing stupid ass goggles. I'm acting crazy. This you didn't have my permission to be here like I'd be pissed. Well, there's no one else. Well, can we say this is where I get frustrated with the show because everyone's best friend is Carrie, but they're not best friends with each other. I'm sorry. She could call Samantha or Charlotte, but it's always pissed me off that like the four of them don't have a relationship. They really it is crazy. It's like a pinwheel. It pisses me off. Yeah. I was there. I was there's a lot of friends for me to do around one person. Yeah. But like, I don't know. You would still like, I guess you're right. And they make me so season three like Sarah Jessica becomes a co executive producer. So she's like, they're all going to be friends with me. Okay. Yes. And I guess that's like, it's like, if Carrie's not in the scene, like, there's not going to be a scene where it's just Charlotte and Miranda because why isn't Carrie at it? It's not another guy. Why isn't Carrie? I'm just like, I'd love to see Samantha and Charlotte having a talk through Central Park together. That would be interesting. There's a lot to work with there. Well, it's like the argument of polycules. We always see where it's like, it's hard to be in a polycule as you have so many relationships to manage. Yeah. And it's like, in a way, Carrie is the center unit in a polycule. Oh, 100%. She's the primary. She's everyone's primary partner. Yeah. That is true. And they do get jealous. I would love to see those four sit down with Orna and really working out. Oh, spin off ideas. Oh my god. You know he's spinning off. Charlotte's. Oh, yeah. Yeah. He's spinning off at a control. Spinning off at a control. Well, that doesn't make any sense. Oh my god. Right. So this is about domestic violence. Yes. Got it. So. Finally, we brought it there. Yeah. Finally. So Charlotte is like, um, sorry. I mean, I want to be saved by a night and then this guy, Jay, Jay, who's like, you got sweet lips. Let me kiss him. I do that. He's like a Borscht belt comedian. It's funny. Well, it's funny to you because it's like this like shiver. Like everything looks like very chivalrous. And it's like, oh my god. He's like a man. It's like a man, man. Yeah. And then he's actually just sort of violence. Yeah. Was I an abuser to her? It's just like to me. Yeah. When a man is violent like that towards men, or like when a man is like, I need to protect my woman, woman, that means in their mind, women will be getting harmed. And it's up to them to punch people to stop it. And also the idea of like, this is my girl. I'm protecting her. It's like, so you're treating her like property like it's really about a land fight. That's like the the inception also of like the white nights in drone, yeah, is that like you're being taken from somewhere to save yes, you're
We were out the safety, but you are also at the whim of the night. - Yeah, where the hell is the night taking me? - Exactly. - Like, take me to a fucking bathhouse, yeah. - He's gonna take me to his apartment, man. - Yeah, it's like nasty. - I'm like, I know what you like with graphic design and it's not what I want, no. - I mean, it's also like Charlie, you never want to get what you asked for. In this world, please, do not. - That is the summary of Charlottes Pauline 'cause you never want what you want. - But it's also true. - 'Cause you watch her before even the day J. Interactive she walks into this bar with Carrie. Carrie's like, just act chill, she's like, yeah. I want it now, like I need everything to be perfect. Why is that guy not approaching me? How do I get over here? - She's like so pissed that there's no single guys for her on the Staten Island, like hot guy convention. Like, yeah. And I've totally been that where I'm like at every event. I'm like, why, like where are the single guys? - Well, you're at a backyard comedy show and you know everyone. - That's meeting like, where are they? And it's like, you're at Animal. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - You're not gonna meet the person, right? - Also, like all these women's hobbies are dating. Like the hobby vacation of dating also, like, it becomes like so. - Yeah, when I was trying to date earlier this year, it was like replacing open mice entirely. - In an positive way? - No, no. - Yeah. - Both are bad. - Yeah, of course, of course. - But I was like, I was treating hinge dates like open mice where I was like, okay, I'm gonna do like 20 this month. - Oh, was that this year that you did that? - Yeah, I did it in February. - And how did, what came of that? - So it was me and Pascas, the pot, Jesse Lee agreeing to do it as and keeping each other accountable. And I went on 12 hinge dates and said, I'm in this for the wrong reasons, 'cause I mainly think about filling out my Google sheet that I could make a live show about this. - Right. - And then Jesse Lee of course has a boyfriend. - She loves him. So from this experiment, from this experiment. - Well, okay. But did you, like, okay, well, this is to my question. Like, did you feel like it was a numbers game and you ultimately met more people you'd be interested in? - No. - I mean, I don't see a ring on that finger. - Yeah. - So basically, it was a numbers game in that I wasn't caring about their inner worlds enough, but they weren't being interesting. - Right. - I think hinge, I think I just need to go on dates with people I've met before or like, somebody's introduced me to, but for them to be like a random face card that I, like, clicked in message, I just don't think it's gonna work. - Also, like, I think it's hard when you're like a funny woman and they don't, the most I've ever gotten asked out is after a show. - Really? - Yeah. - That's never happened to me. - I'm just saying, like, I don't get asked out, like, randomly on the street. - Right. - People are like when I'm, - Yeah, like, and I think it just goes to show that like, I feel like sometimes, my point was to say that like, sometimes it's like, you go on hinge, like, I don't have like, comedian in my like thing. And I think like, they meet you and then they're like, you're a comedian, it's like, they short circuit. They're like, but you're cute and I met you on a dating app. - Is it a Tuckerfucker? - No, I just think they're just like, I can't, like, compute. But if they see you doing your thing, they're like, I understand you as a fourth person. - That's so real. - Yeah. - Like if I was a doctor and they saw me and they met me in surgery, it's kind of the same thing. - I just hate when I'm on hinge and it's like a guy posting his first photos like him holding a mic. And being like, I'm a stand-up comedian. I'm like, okay, well, I haven't seen you around very much. - It's like, you're not actually. - Yeah, I'm like, where's your podcast? - Oh my god, every activity to my-- - It's the guy we were talking about. - Shout out. - Shout out. - I did reactivate my hinge after a year of it being set the pause. And then I revealed I was like, oh my god, my career, the whole time it's been broadcast are. - I really isn't a thing a girl shouldn't do. - It's okay, it's okay. - It's okay, we're building, we're building. - I just started this writing class where everybody, and it is a somatic healer or therapist. And they asked me my job was, I was laid off. So I was like-- - Somatic healer. - I am a comedian and podcaster. (laughing) Giggling to myself and my head as I said it. And I make full-time income on that. - Yeah. - Yeah, please? - Yes. - I am a creator. - I'm a creator. - I'm a world builder. - I like to tell stories. - Yeah, I'm a story. - Oh my god, you know what Samantha likes to do? - What? - Fuck that firefighter. - Oh, yeah. - Hello, come on. Oh my god, she traces down to the fire station in all blue. Oh my god, the jacket and the corresponding dress? - Yeah, that's a great outfit. - Oh my god, where'd she get these colors? I'm just-- - Oh, the cheetah, the blue cheetah. - The blue cheetah. - I said, let her be the new cheetah girl. - I wrote that done actually. (laughing) - And Raven's gonna leave. She can go to Spain with them, right? - I just don't think she should be fast and forward in a firehouse as like a place for safety. - I just, my heart goes out to Samantha 'cause she put on that whole look. What an amazing look. She goes to that weird place that they are at. - So it's called a fire station. - Yeah. - Sorry, my dad worked in the fire station. - Great. My only experience with fire is to smile. The reference is the dad and my sister's keeper. You know that movie without the girl Brussels? - Yes, yeah, that's my relationship with firehouses. - It's almost like it happened to you. - It felt like it did. But like she's obviously like fish out of water there. And I'm like, girl, no, don't do that. Or like why is he have to be chilling with his buddies? Like he should be like, let's go to the truck. You know what I mean? I think it's just like, it's like he's almost so masculine that sex doesn't matter to him. Does that make sense? - Exactly. - He's just like, yeah, I'm like, I don't, like they don't, of course there's a fire and there's an emergency. But like I love that no one's even like, hi, baby. - Yeah. - They are like so confident in their masculinity that they don't need to be like fucking all the time. - They see this hot blog woman, get out of my pants. - Like I want to watch, I want to eat chili and watch the game. - Yeah. - I do. - It's an interesting thing where it's like also no one objectified her in a firehouse. - Yeah, yeah. - It's, well, and then it's the whole, remember that plot? Miranda, it's like, she keeps talking about a construction site. - Yeah. - I never heard calls on her. They always call all these other women. And she finally wears a cute dress and they call on her. She's like, it feels good to be identified. - Yeah. - Sometimes you want it, sometimes you want it. - It's all Samantha wanted. - I do think it's very inspiring and like inspirational. Inspiring and inspirational, 'cause they're different. - When Samantha says, if she want, I want my fantasy to be my reality. And so I'm going to have to make a work for me. And so she's like, hey, so I'm going to go down this pole. And then I'm going to get in the truck and then you're going to fuck me okay. And she's like really making her dreams come true by just being direct and asking for it. And the guy's like, I'm happy to do this for you. - Yeah. - And I'm like, that's inspiring 'cause so many women would be like, I wanted it to happen, but it just didn't happen. And she's like, I came all this way. - She manifested. - She manifested. - Well, Samantha's always being embarrassed by her own fantasy. - She's now. - And bear it, oh right, right, right, right. Like it's not working out for her. - No, like the, like she's, it's always like the envision. She envision it's like specific like sexual acts for herself. And then like she finds enjoyment in it, but also she finds her own destruction in them as well. Like she has this truly embarrassing moment where there's a fire where she's after she goes out freshly fucked on the back of the fire truck. And she's standing inside the garb of the fireman and they come running out. And she goes, oh, what am I supposed to do? Like, there's a fire, get out of the suit. And then she jumps out to suit, completely naked. And then it comes up in a classy couple and the upper, you saw, like start laughing at her. - Well, I'm sorry. If my apartment was burning down and the reason they were late was because like a sexy woman was like being like, I'm tiny in the suit, I would like be very upset. - Yeah, that's all I was thinking about at that part. I was like, so a mom just died, like, yeah. But I do love the slapstick of her being like, oh, oh, yeah. It's like so like, get it girl. - It's so great. - She's clown. - She is clown. - Yeah, she's good at what she does. - She is good at what she does. Is there any other plot line? I guess we can talk about the, I guess the main plot line of Carrie and a politician. - So Carrie does not pick up the phone when the politician's waiting and calls her. But then she decides. - She's just chased multiple times. So we had the first sequence of Carrie is, she's coming back home. She has these Jimmy Chews. The politicians that's waiting for her in the front door. - With her voter registration. (laughing) - I love that where he's like, I don't know what your politics are, but we gotta get you registered. - Yeah, it's like, we don't even know if she's gonna vote for you. - Yeah, like, not this way. I mean, does anyone really care? Well, I guess people do care about city controller. - To be honest, don't even know what that is. I don't know that one. - I think it has to do with the police. - No. - Okay, a cab then. Actually, great, then Carrie, don't vote. Don't sign that job. (laughing) When he's like, let me see those Jimmy's. And she's like, oh, so you're like, really gonna do all this. And she sits down and is like, well, here they are. - Maybe he's a fat-dash. - Yeah, he wants wikif. He's definitely like-- - He's got wiki feet. (laughing) - He's obsessed. (laughing) - Keep moving around. - No, please. It's actually really hot in here. - It's really hot. - It's just like, I'm just like, I don't know. - It's a terrible place to do a podcast. - No, it's not. - No, it is. It's okay. - It's me, it's me. - No. - And I also wear this jacket, which is like part of my outfit. I feel like I can't take it off. - Yeah. - You know, so that's kind of how I'm feeling in this. So it's like, well, you did it. - Right. - You chose it. - Yeah, I chose it. - I chose this one. This one's on me. - We almost shoot it like a European here. - Yeah. - No AC. - No AC. - No blistering lights. - Yeah. - Some girls do this every day. and it's like chill. - And they make. money. Yeah. I money off of this. I've been finding out the kind of money girls are making out here. Wow. We were talking about that the other night. Yeah, it's shocking millions beautiful millions. And and That's why I'm like, I don't feel bad when I do a brand deal. No, please. No. Yeah. If anything, I should do more. I would love to have known the brand deals. Carrie would get right. Newly subscription. Can you imagine she would be on fire. She would be truly raking it in. Well, she'd be amazing LCK. Yes. Oh, my God. That's where she got affiliate marketing. It's really talked about in the show, but like, did she get a lot of like free clothes? No, it ultimately, like, truly, they didn't cover that. They never cover, but they're always like, I'm broke. I don't have any money. What's the newer thing? Like people were getting free clothing until like Paris Holden came onto to see right because like you weren't getting photographed as much. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. That's so real. It's tabloid culture. Like, I think Paris Holden was like some of the first to really start getting like free bags like Louis Vuitton would give her back. Yeah. Because she'd always be out. And that's you'd always have like a new Louis bag. Right. That's crazy to think about the influencer economy and how it's been shaped over the last three decades. Yeah. Hmm. And it started right here. Right. It started with bloggers. It started with Carrie. I know. Well, okay. So that happens. And he's like, well, come to me this to this thing because I got to win this burrow later tonight. And I'll drive you when it'll be awesome. And she's like, no. And he's like, no, but you will. And I'm going to come to your house to pick you up. And she's like, no, I think that's hot. So hot. I was like, run it back. Yeah. But then she gets all ready. She gets all dolled up because she's like, I kind of want to go. He seems awesome. And then she, of course, she's addicted to not answering her phone listing into the white smile mean like, like, yeah. And he's like, okay, I guess you don't like me. Also, we can, honey, he can fully see you. You're standing outside looking out at it. It's like, yeah, imagine doing that. So crazy. And then make sure you don't have to like, you know, it's serious. It's serious as hell. Oh my god. But then so she's like, I'm not going to go. And then four seconds after he drives away. She's like, I'll go and I'll take the ferry. I would never, at that point, you've missed the chance. I'm like, run down the block and get get the limo. Like, this is what happened. The writers and producer of the show is like, we have the ferry for a full day shoot. We've got to use it as much as we can. Like, they rented the ferry for the day. Doesn't make sense just to do one. Yeah. Yeah. That's so real. So real. Yeah. No piece of my production days. Sometimes plotlines are about the location managers and what they were hoping to do with their tie. And I need to spend a lot of time on that damn ferry. They did. We never see it again in the whole show. I really, I really did like it. I like Charlotte being drunk on the ferry. Carey holding her jacket. Like, they were having fun. I really believed it as a ferry. There's no plotline ever in the Bronx. You notice that? They do stand on them but out the Bronx. Do we do Queens? I'm sure we touched on it. Do we even touch on Brooklyn? No offense. Yes, we do. Yes, when you got there. Oh, we do a couple times a second. I'll tell you that. All right, Evans closed. But then so they go on that and the kind of ends there, right? And we'll learn more next episode. No, no. Did you walk? Yes, twice even. Okay, so then Carey gets to the party. She's like, I'm here. And we're keeping it light. There's nothing after us. She goes, let me take you home, please. Because we're just going to kiss tonight. They start kissing in the coke closet. It's kind of hot. It's a sexy make out that reminds me of when Max Medina and Laura, like, Gilmar make out in the coke, coke closet at Shulton that one night. There's a lot of seven minutes in heaven. Yeah. To be amongst all those stable codes too. So so much texture. So much texture. Yeah, that's really sexy. Oh my god. A mosaic of hers. But then again, she's like, I guess I'll just take the ferry back. And she's rushing running in her little heels. Her Jimmy shoes. She brought them to the fairs. She was like, I lost it too for this. Yeah, I lost it too for this. It's like the puns. They are so good at them. He comes riding in his BMW. So I'm quite a white night. We're not going to white horse, but girl. She's ready to be saved. Got an actor that has great to white hair. Oh my fucking god Courtney. Yeah, I'm making connections that other people are. Yeah, you're waking up. You're waking up. Yeah. And I said it. Yeah. Has this exact thing happen in the pilot where she missed the bow and big gets her in the car? Is that a thing? There's a lot of like a lot of cars. Well, ultimately she gets dropped off out of her apartment. She's with Samantha at the club. And then she's like trying to get a taxi. But big is like, let me just drive you home. And then they have the moment of time where she was a freeze frame. Oh yeah, we don't do the freeze frames as much. We'll be only do it once in the pilot. Well, on that amazing note, should we cut to our second break? Yeah, we're going to do our second break. And when we get back, we are going to get carried away. Sorry for the interruption you guys. I just wanted to quickly talk about how when you're listening to the pod, you might be like, oh my god, those two are so sweet. But they're also, hmm, a little bit salty. And it's like, wait, how does that work? And it's actually, it kind of reminds me of the classic experience when you're a kid. And you find out that you're eating a chocolate chip cookie. And what's different about this cookie is that there is salt on the top. And you're like, why would you? Who? That's for french fries. What do you mean? And then you're like, wait a second. The salt with the chocolate chip is kind of the whole point. It's kind of incredible, which brings me to our sponsor today, Kachava. And you guys know I try and be sweet on the podcast. But I'm trying to embrace my salty side now because Kachava's new salted caramel is extra satisfying. And it's making me be like, wait, I could be a little salty. That could be good. Because this is good. And the fun part about Kachava's new salted caramel is the perfect balance of mouthwatering flavor and the benefits. So often you have a mouthwatering flavor experience, not so many benefits included, but not with Kachava. Just two scoops provides complete nutrition your body craves with protein, fiber, greens, and so much more. All I'm saying now is embrace your salty side. Let me hear it. Girl, what girl are you? Okay. I'm a Miranda who wishes she was a carry. Yeah. I think ultimately I relate to Miranda's like underdog qualities for sort of like eldest daughter stubbornness, but ultimately like I want to be a knit girl. Like carry, you know, that's so real. But I don't have enough of carry self-delusion and like self-centeredness. You have to curl your hair. They'll change it. Okay, fine. I will. Yeah. How does that feel? That feels really accurate. That's true. We can only guess upon it. Yeah. I do think a lot of people say what girl they are and I don't believe that about what they're saying, but I am supportive because we're on the air. But I genuinely, I'm like, yeah, that makes complete sense. Yeah. Totally. Yeah. I mean like girl, what girl are you? So what did I put? I put Miranda because one thing I'm going to do is refuse help violently. And at any cost. Oh, were we supposed to do it about just this episode? No, that's just okay, because you guys I have. But yeah, I felt very represented in this episode, like her discomfort. This is your answer last time also. Miranda? Yeah. Yeah. For the exact same reason. Oh, really? Imagine. These are recorded on the exact same day back to back and I'm like shocked. I'm like, who the hell was that girl going on about? Miranda's like, she feels embarrassed having needs. And like, I really connect with that. This is so eloquently put. No, I really relate to that as well. Yeah. And it's just like, well, it's obviously like people are like, why won't you just let him help her? And she's like, well, you don't understand the unspoken rules and contract that will then be born of that. Right. And I'm like, if I let someone in, then they can hurt me. Yeah. Yeah. And they can hold it above you and they can get you with it. Oh, I also can I say, like, can I do your exercise of like, I also relate to in this episode, Samantha, like flirting with someone of them, them not knowing that they're flirting. Right. I definitely feel like that. Yeah, because you're probably like being like cool and like a little bit like this about it and they're like, well, a girl would never be that clever. Right. So I'm just going to take her at her word and this isn't making sense. Yeah. Exactly. I hate that people are very wary of being flirted with. Everyone's access is so much to cost it. I know, and I it also like goes the reverse from you to where I'm like, like someone's like, that guy was like, what? No, that's just David. They're like, why wouldn't he? And then I like try to think of the reasons why he wouldn't. And I'm like, okay. Well, excuse me, but they're like your personality. Ultimately, it's to be like very flirting forward personalized, but they like they have three boyfriends at home. Right. They're not taking home a fourth girl. I do feel like I can't trust. I can't trust. Yeah. Never trust. I had a guy that I was like, he's obsessed with me. Do you know, in my
in my DMs, in my DMs. Hang out, we're out of our, comes over to my apartment five AM, just kind of wanted to talk about brand deals. So, you really do not know. And who do you want? - It was at five AM, he's like, so let's talk Verizon. - Yeah, no, it was even before that. He was just like, I'm just like, really focused on like brand deals. - New York girl. - I don't give a fuck if he sees this 'cause I'm pissed at him. - Yeah, fuck. - He probably like watches this. (laughing) That's crazy. - Don't stalked, we have a wide demo. - No, but like, I'm sorry to watch, like, to listen or watch to a full up-sex and city recap as a straight guy. - I'm kidding, please. - No, he's really upset with me. - So then you sent him away or. - At a certain point, I was just like, I'm just, this is weird, like the vibe is weird. - Yeah. - I'm not getting what I want out of this evening. - Yeah. - Just kissy, kissy. - Oh. - So, gotta go. - I'm gonna ask him to drive him to his home. - Okay. - At least he didn't act like a character study. - What do you mean? How does he get in the head of, like his own January blue go? - Oh, right. What if I been in the darkest day of the week with that work? He's like, "Should I do grumblings?" Yeah, yeah. But, I'll let you say, you just never know. - No, you don't. - Yeah, I will be getting married asking if the guy likes me, the alter. - Yeah. - That's so horrible. - I mean, did you guys read "Strangers" by Bell Burton? - Yeah. - Even after marriage, you still don't fucking know. - That's true. That's true. - Oh, that is a devastating bug. - Yeah. - Well, also so funny. - I'm like, girl, I don't know, that whole book. I'm like. - Why, 'cause she is $30 million in a bank. She didn't elude too. - Oh, okay, fire. - I think I was just kind of like, yeah. Like, my thing is like, if you're gonna marry like a finance guy, like that, like, don't expect much. - Oh my gosh. - I do like to define as guy in this episode, the one that's really stating, like next time he beats the one up his at brunch. I'm like, I take brunch that seriously, too, girl. - Yeah, you're like, "Okay, I have this episode." I'll tell you, girl, what girl am I? Is someone bumped into you at brunch, you would beat the fuck out of them? - Yeah, let their bellini over, Batch. - Yeah, me too. - Sorry. - Girl, will a girl, you look charlotte's abusive, away from? - Only at brunch. - Okay, porous. - Sorry, I don't think about that kind of stuff. - Of course. - I love that you're just inventing a random news out there. - It's time to get carried away, if you're-- - Well, you better hope, too. - I'm scared. - Okay. Melee, what are you getting carried away with? - Well, don't be a bitch. - I'm not being a bitch, I'm just being myself. - Okay, I kind of already touched on this, but I think any man that wants to protect their girlfriend is seeing her as an object and property and that he will eventually punch her. - This fence, the Femself podcast that Girls Rewatch is so awesome. - Amen, sister. - Mine is, I also alluded to this as well, but thinking about how, even in my own life, I will accept these barriers for myself when it comes to dating or even taking nice hoods because you don't want to always be relying on others or play Kate yourself in any way to them. And instead, you're left always being wary of people's generosity and you should. I'm able to take generosity, it's face value in friendship, but it's in tandem, and I think carry also grapples with this. From our friendships, you can take friendship. You can take niceity, but it's like the relationship of dating. There's always another extra area of like weariness because also like it involves the body and it's so much intimacy involved. And you just don't know what the act always intends to be behind it is. And that's again, like, he can't give herself over to the politician because she doesn't want to, like, not be independent, but also it doesn't want to like, say, play it again, but like, give away her emotions. Like, she wants to acknowledge her feelings with big and it's, and we're all constantly grappling like, what emotions do we acknowledge now? Or should we save for later and try to enjoy the present? - Yeah. - It's so hard. - Yeah. - Ultimately, I am proud that she went on that date. - Oh, please. You should always go on the date. Is this a hard answer? Like every single time we're presenting it, we always like have to deal with the choice. - And you know what's actually cool about, like, you can go on the date and still be closed off. (laughing) Like, we actually do have the secret third option, which is like, remain closed, but go to the activity. - Yeah. - And then decide from there. - I'm never here from them again. - Yeah. - Yeah, please. - Yeah. - You can care about anything. You have outfits, hair. - Yeah, sometimes it's just fun to like, like, sometimes when I don't want to go on a date, I'm just like, I'm just gonna like get dressed up and like, cause play as a girl that's going on a date. - No, I literally like, well, it'll be good to check out a bar and bedstie with this headband on. - Yeah. (laughing) - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Have you good to like listen to a moon a song on my way back? - I wasn't the person for me, but I'm proud of myself for doing it. The amount of times I'm on like the B48 being like, you did it girl. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Everyone around you, like, stop singing out loud. (laughing) - Well, Courtney, thank you so much for being on the panel. - Thank you for having me. I had so much fun. - Is there anything you want to plug? - I'm starting to rewatch podcasts of Sex and the City as well. (laughing) - And we're watching all the episodes in-- - Reverse. - Reverse. - That'll be perfect. - If you live in a major city, Courtney is in those, all of them all the time. - Please see Planet Guardians of the Funniest Shows on Earth. - I literally never belly laugh at anything ever in the world anymore except for Courtney's show. - Thank you. - So, go see ya. - We love you guys. See you next episode. - Bye. - Bye.
