Sex and the City S2E10: “The Caste System” with Lara Marie Schoenhals and Carey O'Donnell
1h 24m
The episode revisits a pivotal season of *Sex and the City*, focusing on themes of class, identity, and love across its core characters. It highlights the sharp class divisions between characters like Carrie, who embodies New York’s upper-tier culture, and Samantha, who navigates the challenges of being a powerful, independent woman in a world that judges her. The narrative explores friction in relationships—such as Miranda and Steve’s strained dynamic over financial expectations and Steve’s modest lifestyle—and underscores how classism shapes interactions, even in intimate settings. Charlotte serves as a grounded, insightful voice, challenging the cast’s blind spots about social hierarchy. The show’s early aesthetic—budget-conscious, gritty sets and real-life situations—adds to its authenticity and timeless appeal. Memorable moments like the controversial judith lieber purse exchange and the fire extinguisher purchase underscore how satire and personal vulnerability intersect. While some elements feel dated, the show’s boldness in addressing feminism, race, and social structures remains powerful. Its portrayal of women’s lives in early 2000s New York continues to resonate as a mirror of cultural shifts, proving its lasting relevance in discussions about gender, relationships, and class. The episode ultimately celebrates the show’s ability to blend humor, heart, and social commentary into a narrative that feels both immediate and historically significant.
Steve is so hot. Steve is the hottest guy ever. There's no one hotter. He's so sexy.
His pheromones coming off the screen, I was like, this is crazy.
No, when they kissed, I was like, do I believe in love?
Welcome back to Girls Rewatch, a podcast about girls, TV, and girls on TV.
My name's Amelia Retaller. And I'm Evan Lazarus.
And joining us in the studio today, it is one of the most legendary podcasts in the space.
Joining us are the hosts of Stubb, Carrie O'Donnell, and Laura Marie Shane Hulse.
You got it.
You got it right.
Oh my god, you slayed.
I need to own it more.
Yeah, have conviction.
Have confidence in your own abilities.
Because I saw you waver for a second, and I was like, she's fucking got this.
I had chills.
I could have just done it. And then I watched you.
My daughter come all the way through, and I said, we did this together.
Blame it on the smoke.
No, it's like there's a fire that's a state of an emergency right now.
And for us to podcast through it is really brave.
It's really, it's exciting, right?
Yeah.
It's incredibly brave.
We are kind of boots on the ground at all times, no matter what's burning.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, this isn't your first time putting in a fire.
Not even just us, like just podcasters in general.
But this is, you guys are true Angelenos now.
Once you've been here during a state of emergency, I'm sorry to say, a part of you will always be in LA.
Right.
Well, yesterday, imagine I was like, ooh, the clouds are kind of gray.
And it was like, so that's smoke, babe.
Once you get that alert on your phone, I'm sorry, a part of you will always be trapped.
Wait, did you get an alert on your phone?
No.
Well, then please, I'm still waiting for the call then, it sounds like.
Yeah.
I am still stuck as a New Yorker.
It's so funny coming in from New York and you come to LA, you're like, I'm not a transplant.
I'm from New York City.
Yeah.
It doesn't work that way.
Famously, there's a difference between New York and LA.
Yeah, right?
I haven't figured that out yet.
We've been playing with what the answer is all week.
It's cool.
It's something to think on, to marinate on.
Yeah.
It's the subway.
And then journal about.
It's the subway.
Yeah.
And I haven't.
By Capitol Road.
The subway is-
The Great Connector.
Actually, kind of incredible, I haven't taken it here but once, but they just opened some
new stops that I've driven by and really, it makes me feel like I'm in New York.
Wow.
And it makes me like LA more.
Because I'm like, that's so New York of us.
Right.
And there's always like, there's like a throng of people coming out of it.
And I'm like-
I saw someone going in with a suitcase.
I said, where on earth are you going?
I wanted to do, for SUP, I wanted to have us take the train once just to see what it's
like.
Yeah.
Y'all should record it.
Multicam on the bus.
I've seen so many podcasts turn into vlogs.
Yeah.
That's a huge part.
Yeah.
Subway takes, but for LA.
I have taken LAX to try and get two Los Feliz, because I was like, I don't need to Uber for
$80.
It was legitimately like three buses and like one Metro line, it took like two and a half
hours.
Yeah.
It's a very, we're an isolated people here.
Yeah.
Everything is very staggered and like you're in your own hole.
We were invited to a pool party yesterday and then-
Wow.
We weren't.
Oh.
Whose pool party?
Can you say?
This is kind of this awesome thing where a girl mentioned on the phone while I was calling
my friend and then his friend that I know was like, oh, come to my pool party tomorrow.
I was like, yeah.
Not an invitation?
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Well, you would think.
And then I go, I swipe up.
She doesn't, I never got to actually like text where her address is or where she is.
So I swipe up on her Instagram.
Rude.
Being like, you look amazing at her, in her, in her bikini.
And then no response.
Wait, that's crazy.
That's very like middle school.
Yeah.
To me, I'm like, oh, it's okay.
Well, no, she, she was like, it's in Manhattan beach.
Oh.
Oh, we got invited to a second pool party.
There was two.
Two invitations.
Look at you guys.
You land merely 72 hours ago and you're already in Manhattan Beach.
Yeah.
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
Two invitations. Look at you guys.
You land merely 72 hours
ago and you're already the toast
of the town. It sounds like
uninvited from one pool party and one
that's an hour and a half away from we're saying.
Manhattan Beach is. That's two more pool parties.
That is like an hour away, right?
Manhattan Beach? Yeah. That's the
odyssey.
South Bay. I'm like, yeah, that's
like past the airport. Oh, it's
a different town. That's where people
retire. Like women in oil retire.
It's like Long Beach.
Women in oil. Sorry, but
it is. That's what Charli XCX's new album
is called. Women in oil.
Are you guys music fashion? Haim is going to be so fucking pissed.
Haim.
Are you guys music fashion or movie?
Movie,
fashion, music
is my hierarchy.
Movie, fashion.
Okay, so you guys are movie based.
Actually, you were telling me downstairs for
upwards of 25 minutes of how you're just going to
amazing new wardrobe. I did, but it was
like the first amazing new wardrobe I've ever gotten
for free. Oh, it's like the first
time in your life wardrobe has been at the forefront.
Yeah. That's so exciting. Yeah.
Are you like waiting to go to events?
Um, sure.
I'm waiting to go to events. I'm
trying to master my
style. You're doing an amazing job.
Thank you. It's really hard to find
out who you are. Well, I'll never get over it.
One time I was called, someone referred to me as
old Navy boy, B-O-I.
Before Zach Townsend?
So you were hate-crimed?
Yeah. Wasn't that a listener who called
you that? It was someone, no,
I was in the Reddits.
Okay. It was a hater.
But from then on, but they did help me
and I do, I thank them because
from then on I've been like on a mission
to try to level up. Right.
Sometimes haters are your motivators. Yeah.
So I thank them. Old Navy is so huge right now.
I like Old Navy. I know it's really having
such a comeback. It was a classic
comment. And they're doing cute
things. They are actually doing cute things.
I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't
know. I haven't set foot in one.
I don't know where one is
really, but I'm curious.
Take me there, you know.
They have the iconic American flag shirts.
Yeah, which Americana's
back. So it's like, now's
the time. They brought structure to it,
which is actually why it's so in
style now. It's because Zach knows
structure when it comes to handbags and
they've actually leveled up their apparel business.
And have you guys seen their
Air Force?
Who runs it now?
Zach, Zach, oh my God, I keep saying Townsend, but it's
Zach Pozen. Zach Pozen, sorry.
Does he do all of the Gap group?
He does all of the Gap.
Oh, okay.
He's a head of creative.
So Gap is really slang.
I know he's. Zach Townsend, a guy from my high school.
Zach Townsend sounds like a cool guy name.
Well, his best friend was another person named
Evan Lazarus and it haunted me for years.
Wait, what?
Wait, there were two Evan Lazarus?
My other friend was dating Evan Lazarus and everyone's like,
and I would comment on her Facebook while being like,
hey girl, happy birthday. And they were dating for two weeks
and everyone's like, oh my God, are you a fan?
I was still with Evan Lazarus. He's like, no, that's my gay friend.
Oh.
I know. Zach Townsend took a number out on me.
Don't bleep that. He needs to hear.
Do you have anybody with your name
and it's like a whole thing or no?
No.
There's a realtor in Palm Beach with my name.
Totally.
We're both aware of each other.
Your podcaster?
No, she's like a middle-aged woman who has great hair
and she's like very pretty and like seems to be
a very successful businesswoman.
I'll say a business person.
And but her name is Carrie O'Donnell on social media.
So I feel like she's like the same way.
This is good. She's getting like good
feed SEO probably.
Yeah.
Yeah. You're probably like helping her business.
But she she's had I think we've had our eye on each other for a while.
And it's like she definitely knows about you if you know about her.
I think it's probably a comp.
It's a bit of a complicated relationship in some way.
You're at war spiritually.
Oh, please.
Yeah, I don't have.
I don't have.
I don't have this last name random.
Yeah, well, there was Evan Lazarus that died and it's like I'll never beat him.
Wait, how are there so many Evan Lazarus?
It's the seventh, the 75th most popular Jewish name, last name in America.
It's a great last name.
It's a powerful name.
The in totality, Evan Lazarus is a famous name.
Well, the problem is that it is powerful.
I will.
It's easy for me.
But Evan Peterson did the Lazarus project.
So he also it's like for me, actually, that's my biggest Evan Lazarus.
Competition. Today, we are covering actually the cast system just over years and decades.
So in this episode, it's season two, episode ten.
This episode asks the question, can we date outside our cast?
Carrie, being a downtown girl, causes friction with Biggs fancy world.
Miranda tries to buy Steve a nice suit, which leads to Steve breaking up with her.
Charlotte hooks up with celebrity Wiley Ford, but quickly realizes he sees her as less than.
Meanwhile, the cast is still in the process of finding a new partner.
And the cast is still in the process of finding a new partner.
Meanwhile, Samantha starts seeing Harvey Turtle, a man with a servant,
and realizes the servant runs Harvey's world and isn't going to let Samantha into it.
This is one of the best episodes in all of Sex and the City.
It was incredible.
Like it season two and three specifically were just firing on all cylinders when it was like,
here's the theme of the episode.
Each girl has an incredible storyline that's really funny.
And we'll like tie it all up in a bow at the end and give you lots of laughs.
Lots of looks in the meantime.
It's like absolutely stunning.
Like now we get YouTube video essays with like random Google images.
Get there.
And it's like we used to have four unique girls tell the same thing.
Yeah.
In a gorgeous way.
I miss it.
It's so good.
And everyone is kind of the best representation of who they are in this episode.
Everyone knew exactly what character, like the characters were so realized.
And.
It was just like, it's so nice to revisit because it also, I mean, there are some elements of Sex and the City obviously that don't feel as timeless, but it still does hit even from a comedy perspective where you're like, this is timelessly funny.
It's so good.
exploratory moments like this is when i like sex city more than girls even because it really
provides a center thesis that allows a viewer to it doesn't tell you how to feel either it just
gives you information drops in it drops in and then you're able to extrapolate your own opinion
based off the context of the episode yeah in a way i don't think there's even a tv show that
rivals this without being so explanatory no it was incredible tv writing yeah so quick it's 28
minutes it's like crazy how did that all end in 20 i know it's insane and it feels yeah like because
sometimes when i'm watching tv or oftentimes it's like i maybe have like an hour an hour and a half
in me of paying attention and then i'm like i need a phone or like i need to scroll i'm bored
i'm done but this is moving so quickly like and it predates all of social media yeah and somehow
they master it and then it's like oh my god i need to scroll i need to scroll i need to scroll
that like quickness that just holds you in the moment it's also the most like carrie's a brat
carrie brat as in like charlie xdx like she was a terrorist she's a terrorist i need to just say
right it's about the judith lieber clutch is cute wait i i want everyone just gonna do about 45
minutes on this you don't think already polarizing we were talking about gracie abrams before the
shock the shock the song it starts with like the cutest music and it's just like springtime in the
park it's like it's easy to say i love new york it's hard to say i love you big carrie and big
kind of they go to the ballet carrie's hair is crimped for the first time which was really
special the crimping i was she needs to samantha needs to take that crimper away from her but i do
love that she'll try something insane every once in a while like she was taking risks out
here from a hair perspective and an outfit perspective and i have to tip my hat to her
for that it was like it's like adrienne maloof with a tinsel yeah except somehow it's much worse
it was the crimpage is far worse the crimp is shocking also the beginning i will say of her
talking about new york was sort of the beginnings of like late season late series uh sarah jessica
parker who was like single had a little more control over the narrative and and really went
on missives about new york right she was like i have a poem i want to write about new york
yeah i have a tome about new york and i'm gonna now she doesn't have her instagram captions but
i was like you see the beginnings of like that carrie new york i love you carrie but it made
me love new york i was like i gotta get over to new york in the springtime i was like is there
anything better men in suits it is like people are allergies girl yeah i don't experience those
so i'm marked safe from allergies at the moment but spring this year everybody with allergies
was like in a bad mood and i was like so i guess i'm resilient
as hell because i just feel like a spring chicken you don't love new york in the spring
carrie has crimped hair what's cool about that is she only crimped one little section
um i like that that's like when we invented curly hair with straightened bangs that's kind of the
taylor swift signature look is a curly hair straight bang when taylor swift do you guys
remember the cultural shift when taylor strained her hair for the first time that's kind of what
happens this season with carrie because she did not have straight hair even one time first season
no and it's
truly shocking when she goes straight and how long her hair is so long she's also like i'm like
this is the most beautiful woman that's ever lived i know like she she is new york she is
stunning woman best body best style she's always doing things where she's like lifting up her arm
and it's like the most insane arm muscles you've ever seen in your life she's linda hamilton arms
she's the most beautiful breasts i do have to say like sorry to comment on a woman's body but
i've always thought this about her they're just like perfect i love that she and jfk
were fooking at one point jfk junior and sarah sarah skipperker were dating for a little i didn't
know candace dated uh jfk junior chic they all dated candace jfk too bergen or no
she did oh and that's why she was so that's why she was in rivals with carolyn beset
that's what fx love stories that's the feud i want to see right well she wrote a i know i know
oh yeah remember i sent you that bitch in the city god i love a popper with an abusive husband
carrie accidentally says i love you because she thinks the judith lieberman swan purse is fugly
i think that there are certain judith lieber purses that are really cute but i do think it
really needs to match your personality so like big giving her a duck purse like i wish it had
swan because a swan would have been something a little bit yeah and when she went to the party
later i saw a woman with like a little watermelon and i was like that's really cute i saw an
eggplant one at the party i liked that one but there is something exquisitely horrific about
a man giving you an expensive present that has like nothing to do with you and you question
everything right she's like oh i'm not known instead of saying i feel like you don't get me
i'm gonna say i love you yeah that wouldn't be my my reaction but
you don't like the purse i don't like it for her but she's such a kitsch queen i kind of love i get
what you're saying it's like it is sort of like who who are we like you don't know anything about
me like we're strangers and it is it is kind of fugly but i also thought it was like kind of carrie
like i don't know for some reason the duck kind of spoke to me as like she's new york you know
like it just felt kind of like it felt like a new yorker cartoon i don't know but it was
i didn't know she was gonna hate it until she told me that's what she was like i didn't know
that's where the plot was going yeah maybe she could have been like oh my god you know very
similar purse to that it's in the smithsonian really because judas escaped the holocaust
they come to america to design bags and then for carrie ignored that jewish american yes
she ignored that jewish american experience with her perfect breasts and she said i i don't want
the swan for me that's upsetting i think also at the time yeah it was
very much like an old lady thing or like a upper east side like i remember watching the episode in
real time and being like this is heinous but then now like in the rearview mirror it is kind of cute
and grows on you it is very older no it is like don't get me wrong like it is like it's low when
you see it but there's something it's like how like edie parker i feel like is sort of like
judith lieber 2.0 like she's like the next generation of people who are like oh my god
of that like her her clutch and her yeah and like i do there's something just like
a kitschy clutch yeah it's like really i think it's really chic actually and i think
i mean i'm not trying to defend big but i think but i do think he was he did see carrie as like
you're different like yeah you're not like it was almost like i'm gonna give you a taste of my world
but i'm but i see you like you're something special i don't know maybe i'm like i get that
like it's cute like it's like fun it's different in a way that he's like you're like the quirky
like cool interesting girl but i can see but that's not what you want to hear that's i get it
it's like yeah but it perfectly sets up the plot where it's like there's friction in their two
worlds colliding so my mom is exact same age as sjp so when and living in new york at the same
time at the tv show was coming out and i remember my mom had a judith lieber so it felt like it was
like a personal attack on even my mother no it was it was i mean it was a black like a
but i'm like still still she was she was in the also this story they are like five thousand dollars
these bags current day current day they were like five thousand probably back then they're like
fifteen hundred but like it's not something to like you're just like about an eyelash no it's a
it's a real investment it's a piece it's a piece i do love they break so easily she's like i love
you and then big is like i'm gonna not react i have to go smoke this cigar yeah like
his eyes like hear it and he's like totally he's dead inside yeah we cut to the girls lunch
where they basically have a socratic seminar on like when to say i love you and like charlotte's
of course so happy for carrie and then samantha's like oh god honey like wait until he does it
miranda's like oh my god and then me paraphrasing it um but then carrie's like setting up the idea
like well i'm not mad at him yet but i will be in the length that it takes milk to curdle like
it's a curdle timeline where it's like he has about a week i love that yeah i also just love
when miranda does something out of character where she's like well i just love love or something
don't you love it and everyone's like the fuck is wrong with you right because she's in her like
honeymoon era with steve she's waxing optimistic also miranda her hair was so cunt
it was so amazing i just i just thought her hair was it was so outrageous at the time it was
positively repellent no i know but now watching it again and again i'm like she's so chic she's
so chic and like just powerful and i they're all just amazing they're amazing women they're
amazing women i just miss them so much i miss what i'm so upset of what they did to miranda
and steve is so hot steve is the hottest guy ever hotter he's so sexy his
pheromones coming off the screen i was like this is crazy no when they kissed i was like
do i believe in love like i was like
I think I might, I need to, like, get on the apps or something or, like, go on a date.
Like, I could maybe have this.
You're like, this is how I re-downloaded Hinge.
Yeah, basically.
I know Cynthia in real life obviously is a lesbianic, which is amazing.
But I was like, Steve is Miranda's soulmate.
Yeah.
Not Che.
I'm sorry.
No, absolutely.
Steve is the love of her life.
I'm going to say it.
And just like that is a slap in the face to every viewer because they're pretending we didn't see the show we saw.
Yeah, we didn't see this kid.
And I do believe that there could and should be a class action lawsuit.
Yeah, everyone should get on the app.
Lars has been saying this for years.
I've been beating this drum.
Like, I can't lead it.
I have too much on my plate.
But, like, I will testify and take part in it.
Right.
You're like, I'll go to court, though.
I will.
As a non-binary stand-up comedian, it was, like, amazing to finally see myself on TV.
Like, to bomb in real time.
It's like, yes, I know this experience.
A comedy concert.
They were never bombing.
They were.
They were always, like, everywhere Che went, everyone was like, ah!
Like, they were like, this is the funniest person I've ever seen.
They got a sitcom.
And her jokes, her punchlines were all like, I fuck a lot.
And everybody's addicted to me.
And everybody in the audience is like, ah!
She's like, I might even fuck some of you tonight.
And they're like, woo!
I was like, okay, you're a sex pest.
You're ripping fucking pipes of weed indoors.
In a funeral.
Yeah.
In an elevator.
In an elevator at work.
At Sirius XM.
Che got away with everything.
Che was like the Wiley Ford of fucking and just like that.
You might be going, Evan, are you inside a cabin?
Girl, I'm inside the beauty that comes from a Jones Road beauty lover.
Evan, is that cabin in a full coverage forest?
Maybe.
But I can get full coverage from a foundation stick launched this year by Jones Road Beauty
or partial, just depending on my mood.
God forbid.
God forbid I have a mood.
I have a mood.
And if God wants to do any miracles, it better be that miracle balm.
Oh my God.
I can use it on my cheeks.
I can use it on my lips.
Girl, I can even put it on my hips if I just want to have some fun with it.
I showed it to my mom.
She's addicted to the stuff.
Showed it to my brother.
Guess what?
He's playing with it too.

So Wiley Ford, who do you think he's based on?
He looks like Christian Slater, kind of, or Bill Paxton.
Okay, yeah.
He's kind of like a mixture of them.
I don't know who he is.
Bill Paxton.
He does look like Bill Paxton.
Who do you think would, I'm, like, he would be the Connor Story of now.
Do you think?
Or, like, who would be, who would it be?
Connor Story seems intelligent to me.
I don't know if he's buyout.
Connor Story's, like, sweet.
Who's, like. I know, it's so, like, um. There's no hot, sexy movie star now.
He's like Stephen Dorff.
Yeah.
He's very Stephen Dorff.
Kind of, like, the early to late 90s, like, sexy, like, kind of bad boy.
He has an entourage.
He's Chad Michael Murray to me.
pussy posse yeah yeah but so he shows up to um charlotte's art gallery and is looking on a fire
extinguisher and is like how much is it i'd like to buy it and she's like oh and charlotte's like
well i'm not rolling my eyes even a little bit my eyes are actually going a wuga because this
is incredible you can actually buy the fire extinguisher and just tell people he goes my
name is wiley and she goes i know i just love when charlotte also goes out of character where
it's she's like all my rules just went out the window like powerless and i'm just like i have
chills even just thinking of charlotte getting like wrapped up into this world charlotte's one
of the greatest tv characters ever say i'm gonna say she's really funny she's also on like the
multiple rewatches i've done i'm like she's has such soul yeah and it's really
you
like thoughtful and like thoughtfully sketched character like she really rounded she really
came full circle in the series well she has such a marnie vacation of her where marnie is so
isolated to her first season characteristics and then she completely deviates them every single
time she gets a chance and charlotte is in the same bucket where everyone's like she's a prude
she's standoffish but i mean she's she's gonna she's about to put her finger in her pussy and
have and smell it no like yeah like she's she's fucking in the back of the limo like upon just
meeting this guy it is crazy to me that like charlotte i have to pee so much um i'm gonna go
take a leak in the alley and charlotte's like that's awesome when it's like charlotte would
hate that but she's just so like wrapped up and she's like carrie i love this guy and carrie's
like don't do it she's like goodbye carrie's like leave now i love carrie being like we lost her
yeah i love when charlotte charlotte also has some of the most like hilarious
plays in her life i love when charlotte also has some of the most like hilarious plays in her life
the plot lines of the show were charlotte like having some sort of like brutally awkward or
humiliating like sex moment with a guy or like like the guy who kept calling her a whore when
he would come she's kind of the most adventurous one like remember there was like a wasn't there
like a hasidic artist who painted her vagina that i think she's there's someone to paint
her vagina next episode she hooked up with a hasidic artist okay yeah so and then there was
another artist where she did like cross-dressing and she looked great yeah like she actually
is incredibly sexually adventurous she dates a gay man like yeah that was a blast yeah like she was
actually really cool and that's why when she has a lot of depth when she called samantha a slut that
was very painful that one hurt you but then she learned her lesson because she went to the country
club or wherever with her former like sorority sisters and they thought she was a slut wait
wanted to know some lore so i wrote on the tv version of heathers it was doomed but it was a
great show
i didn't know there was a tv version exactly i need to check that out but one of the sorority
sisters played heather chandler's mom love one of the redhead woman that was like oh okay well
let's go into um miranda and steve of it all so they're on a pizza date and miranda's like when
we go on cheap dates i let him pay and he is like scoffing when the guy is like two slices of pizza
and two large sodas 560 i got full body chills i know i know i know i know i know i know i know
i said remember when like this was in new york i know it's in new york you can you can still find
that though no every 99 cent pizza slice oh you shake your heads at me because you worked on
heathers don't you dare the one dollar places are like 150 they're 125 if you do it right and
a soda can is only about 125 as well so we want to do some quick math on that but that's for one
slice one soda but they only had one slice they had a slice each and a soda each yeah yeah
125 for each all those items no i'm just so four times 125 it's time for a forensic accountant to
really get in here and break it down the most shocking part of that scene was how free they
were just eating that pizza like they were just chewing like they were doing it that never happens
on tv i will say in new york it's like you have you spent 125 on pizza you either get sauce or
cheese you can't get both the pizza looks good at all it made me want to slice so bad i wanted one
but a new york slice yeah it reminded me of artichoke pizza when i would go and like don't
bring up that name here i would i would go in a blackout and i'd get a pizza that's like the size
of my torso and i'd like eat it like you know like right before getting on the subway and then like
puking later of course that was my high school by the way really artichoke pizza the girls who
go to highline for a day and get a slice of artichoke pizza where like rising to the top of
like the highest friend group really they could get an instagram post of that
it was really that was like your judas leverman of this episode was
was pizza made out of artichokes or big by melissa which my mom loves to buy me on my
birthday in 2026 love that um but of course what are your guys's thoughts like is samantha and
steve destined to fail because steve has a um shitty apartment and like well this is the thing
as miranda says it'd be one thing if he was a striving artist with like bartending as his job
to paper stuff but his
like the end of the road for him is bartending she said um but she seems fine with it she's cool
with it i think that she likes him just the way he is and he is actually the one with more of a
problem or ego around like i'm dating this like fancy lady she wants to buy me things and it
makes him feel like less of a man she's a philadelphia native turned harvard grad and he
can't handle it he can't handle it and it is like
miranda is so down and steve is just like this hurt my feelings you trying to pay and it's like
okay i do love when like he is like we have to cut this off and miranda's like oh so i'm being
punished for being successful i was like this is so radical and important to so many women of this
time totally and also it's like let her just get you the suit i know it's kind of weird but also
just like roll with it take the w i think the advantage of dating miranda is like you date it's
like the same girl he's got a suit in there for her she has a puffy jacket the same size same size
and like overalls exactly yeah overalls and suits girl miranda was always being persecuted for her
brilliance
And remember the episode where she buys the apartment and they're like, I think it was season one or season two.
Yeah, we just covered that one where they're like, and you're single?
And you're single.
You're going to actually have to sign three pages that say you're single.
Is that the episode at the end?
Does she go to the Chinese restaurant and the woman who, remember?
She goes, the woman, she orders the same Chinese food every single night and the woman is laughing at her.
And she thinks she's being judged.
And she goes to the Chinese restaurant and she realizes the woman just laughs.
No, it's not the same episode where she chokes on her seven wonder surprise.
Oh, yeah.
She's always going through it.
But I'm like, I'm now very comforted by single Miranda because I also now identify the most as a Miranda, which is kind of just the way it goes as a Sex and the City viewer.
But I remember viscerally, I can like, I could like draw a rendering of Steve's apartment from memory, like without even having to rewatch this episode.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was just very, it was shocking to me.
Meanwhile, I'm looking at his, I'm like, so he lives alone in an amazing apartment that's affordable and in Manhattan.
I thought it was gorgeous when they first did it open and he saw them like, they're in Paris.
With his apartment?
Yeah.
He lives in like a tenement housing from like the turn of the century.
I like the beads peeling off the wall.
Way better than my current apartment.
It's like no roommates.
The ceiling of my apartment is elementary school, like rectangles that you push up.
No.
Yeah.
And it's like.
Drop ceiling.
To see.
It's a flex wall and then plus that.
I know.
I love when the light seeps in.
I'm like, hey, remember?
But I was like, Steve's fancy as fuck.
I should become a bartender.
You're like, he's goals.
Yeah.
Imagine going down to a man's like John Wayne Gacy basement and like just having the craziest
sex of your life.
And she fucks him down there and is like, no complaint.
She doesn't care.
She's like, he's amazing at sex.
So like, I don't care.
I don't even care if he had a job or not like she doesn't give a fuck.
You guys get self-conscious like if you find yourself in a situation where you date someone
that is in a wealthier situation to yourself, do you like do you feel a way about it in
the past?
Like in New York, if I if I was in like seeing someone and they were like older or just had
more money, I definitely felt like when they would come to Bushwick and they'd see how
I lived, like I felt like I was like, they're wild.
They were like, I was like Molly and lived in a carry.
Yeah.
I lived in the street with like where people put stuffed animals in the trees.
I know.
I feel that same way.
I was in this guy who lived in Bushwick, but he was like, I'm not your adventure.
I know.
But it feels that way.
We were like, oh, am I this person's adventure?
But they they they take you.
Are you?
So you are.
Hopefully you would hope the kind of kindness.
I wish the guys I was dating were rich.
You're so sweet.
I know.
I was like, like, I wouldn't really care.
I just would be like.
I'm not coming over probably that often to your basement, but like, come to mine.
Oh, my God.
My roommates are impoverished men.
What?
My roommates are addicted to dating impoverished men.
No, they know they're impoverished, which is OK.
That's part of their allure.
It is like you were surrounded by successful women with boyfriends who have a two hour
a week job.
You know, it's like a mattress on a lot of girls love to date like a mattress on the
floor guy.
Yeah.
Well, that means they just come over to your apartment.
Yeah.
But then it's also like there's something about, I think, being in your 20s and dating
like mattress on the floor, mattress on the floor guy.
They fuck you really.
They fuck you better.
They fuck amazing.
Yeah.
They're like, I have something like I have to provide something for you.
And it is like, well, now that this generation and I mean, they're the first generation to
deal with this, but like our generation is like the only purpose of having a man now
is for like the emotional and like.
Like sex and like all of that rather than like the money thing, because like no one
has money.
Yeah.
But are men giving emotional.
But is there a part of these guys in bands are what kind of are because I know another
younger lady who is dating a guy in a band and like it's I think surprisingly good where
I think in my day, if you're dating a guy in a band, he's going to just like fucking
destroy.
He's going to be a pig.
No.
Yeah.
It's like.
He's going to ruin your life.
Like, no, our friends always dating a guy in a band and I always meet them and they're
like the kindest little soul being like, hey.
And they just seem like, look, they're all a little bit like of a gay boyfriend.
Not to sound like I'm going to be like, well, but your generation is very like.
Flu.
Everyone's gay.
Yeah.
Everyone's talking.
It's like a lot of people that are by men who won't touch another man, but they're like,
they're open to talk about it.
It's like when I was in middle school and like actually sometimes in middle school everyone
is like at their most like sexually explorative.
Does that make sense?
There was a period in middle school where I feel like everyone was getting fingered.
All the girls were getting fingered.
But like you went to all boys school.
No, my middle school was public, but like ever.
All the girls are getting fingered, but like everyone was thinking about getting fingered.
Right.
You know what I mean?
I feel like even the straight boys were like, if you're not fingering, you're thinking about
fingering or getting fingered.
Does this make sense?
It makes sense.
It's confusing, but it makes sense.
That would happen at a middle school is only if you were dating a guy at a different middle
school.
They would finger.
Yeah.
Like if you were seeing a guy at like the middle school across town, they were fingering,
but you weren't fingering people that go to your middle school because showing up to class
would be crazy.
Cause you would get, you'd get like, you'd be like, yeah, you'd be like the whole, like
you'd be easy.
Yeah.
There was like one girl that got fingered.
There was always like one girl.
And she like made it her thing.
It was just like, she was always the most sexually adventurous one that it was like,
you just knew, like, she was the first one to get fingered.
She was like the first one to like cyber sex.
She's giving blow jobs.
Like she was like the Samantha.
She's incredible.
She was incredible.
And then she was, then she became the first one to like get married and start having like
multiple children.
And now she's like hardcore Christian.
She's like a trad wife.
Yeah.
They just get to sex in my school.
Wow.
Well, you're in New York.
Well, I was, everyone lived like two miles, two hours away from each other.
So it's like, they don't, they had to make the most out of the time they had together.
I wasn't having sex in high school.
This is middle school.
Middle school?
People were having sex because.
That's like kids.
Like at bar mitzvahs.
I've like not touched anyone ever.
Like it's like high school.
I was like, we have the AP test coming up.
Like this is crazy.
And I feel like so many girls in my grade were like that, where it's like, we actually
don't have time.
We have too many extra.
That's cool.
You guys were, you had your minds on the checkbooks.
We're ambitious, goal oriented.
It's like, how the hell are we going to get into the state of the art?
Like, how are we going to get into the state of the art?
That's cool.
It's like, how the hell are we going to get into state university if we don't fucking
study?
Wait, I'm obsessed with the girl who cybored for the first time.
Did she proudly tell people?
No, we discovered it.
Damn.
You discovered it?
I discovered it because she and I liked the same guy at one point.
Like we were both, I think he was, we were.
He was cyborg.
Either it was between seven, maybe it was between eighth grade and like freshman year,
but we liked a guy that was going to be a senior and he would only have like online
aim relationships with like younger girls.
So he was a predator.
Yeah.
And so he, he would like message us and he was like a counselor at this, our school's
like day camp and we were counselors in training and he would pick me up and like take me to
camp so that we could like do our, like.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like counselor, counselor in training.
And then like sometime when he dropped me off, we would like make out, but we wouldn't
speak.
And then we'd get online and like, but then I found out that he was also aiming with her
the entire time.
And then she had told someone else her, uh, AOL password.
So we logged into her account and we found a whole conversations of them cybering that
she had saved in her email.
I know.
And then I did probably one of the worst things I've ever done in my life.
And I sent out her cyber conversations with him to everyone.
Stop.
How did you send that?
You saved that as PDF and then sent it out.
And he emailed and then.
You were radical.
Sent it out.
I cyber bullied.
Oh my God.
That is like.
You lifetimed her.
Lifetime channeled movie.
That's literally the Emily Osment movie.
Like that's the worst thing.
It was the one time I've cyber bullied.
Uh, well actually the second time, but then.
The second time I cyber bullied.
It was the second time.
The first time I cyber bullied my own brother, but then.
That's okay.
We have it coming.
Yeah.
He deserves it.
Do you feel the consequences?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I did.
And I knew.
Like, and I paid for it too.
Cause her sister was a senior when I was a freshman.
So I got just like.
Fully.
Paid with fire.
Yeah.
I played with big time fire.
Big.
Talking about big.
Yeah.
Back to big.
Back to big.
So wait, they go to the amazing party or let's talk about the pedicures.
Yeah.
So that's where they talk about like classism, right?
Yeah.
They're like, it's normal for the guy to have more money.
That's where they talk about classism.
And then.
Yeah.
Charlotte's the one being like, y'all need to stop.
Pretending the caste system doesn't exist.
She loves the cast.
She's proudly.
She's.
I love just like the set up of Charlotte where you're like, oh, this bitch is like insufferable
or saying things that are just like, so yesteryear, but then she always comes in with like a very
thoughtful bow on it where she's like, but you guys are sitting here acting like this
doesn't exist.
And it does.
Yeah.
Looks over the.
Literally looks down at her toes.
Looks down at the ladies doing their feet.
Yeah.
And then like kindly smiles at them.
I was like, true comedy.
And also like, she just is.
Say what you will.
But she's always kind of on the money about things.
She's.
She's not.
She's no bullshit.
I also just have such respect for.
Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I saw this interview with Kristen Davis that popped up on my Instagram where I didn't know she'd been sober since she was 22
She's fucking glowing, but I was like it just she
She's got a lot to her. She's a very anxious woman. Yeah, really? Well, she reports
It's like there was a great difference between
Jessica Parker and her reaction to before Sexton City got renewed like she would call Sarah Jessica Parker every single day
asking if she knew something about the show between the nine months between the pilot and
Before got signed again, and she thought her life was over like she almost quit Hollywood before
Listen, he knew she always had and she had three other things in a bag already. It didn't work out
And I mean that's also shows like the Nate detail of this show because as
There's have you guys read all these exposés about nail salons?
and
In New York City. Yeah, I mean, so what is what in New York City like?
It's a lot of people a lot of Asian people work
it's mostly Vietnamese populations work at these nail salons and
They essentially live in tenement style buildings in Queens where they have five to six women poor room and they will come into the nail salon
They literally just grab any name tag that's available and that's their name for today and they work for about like
Like like dollar to a dollar half a day and then they go back
Happening now
Yeah, that's was they came out like five years ago the big
Where Alana was like you must be being like absolutely abused and then the one was like you're stupid
Cuz that's how you make it funny. I guess
It's really the other two scene where they're in the uber and she's like, how did I break the NDA?
Like who did I tell about the NDA and she's in the uber driver keeps overhearing her talk about fucking a basketball player
Which it did happen to the other day
On Evan's birthday we ubered to fro yo and I was talking about my family lore of how my dad cheated on my mom with
My stepmom and now my stepmom is exploring polyamory
And then like I'm going on and on and then he's like, how do you know all this
Wait was your birthday. It was few two weeks ago. Wait, that is it crazy. What day is your birthday June 6 and
May 30th May 30. Yeah
I mean, I you're all sometimes you have to read like a parental figures diary cover to cover during kovac cuz you're bored Wow
You got the tea
They always do like her
She changed my life
Love I love when that works out
No, literally, there's so much propaganda when you're growing up that stepmoms are evil and I'm late
My son loves to listen to me and take me to get my nails done. Oh, that's the best case scenario
You have a great stepmom. I have a great stepmom. I've had a lot of stepmom experience
But they have like shaped the woman I am today, right?
Don't you think it's fun to get to have multiple perspectives on how to be a woman?
It is and like there's so much to be learned from a stepmom figure
I would love to be a stepmom like I think I would excel at it. I would kill
I love the idea of having like a pre-existing child that I then take on. Yeah that I like I'm not totally responsible for
but I can
Show them a great time
And like give them a lot of love and like be another
Figure to like guide them if they need any guidance like always be there for them like boundary guidance
Yeah, yeah, I love getting high and being like I'm not meant to be a mom. I'm meant to be a mentor
I want to be like the light for the kid
Partially. Yeah, I became a stepmom to my dog and now he's my dog
Is it open adoption?
No, but Simon had him before me and then I came in and now he's like now I'm bonus dad
But now I'm the real dad. It's gonna be fun. Yeah, it's so much easier to be fun
But it's right. It's it's to be a stepparent is a really beautiful thing. Yeah, I think it's gorgeous
Sorry, not the show. I would hate to do that. But it's watching Charlotte being the character from Connecticut
I often think about how can I get like parallels the South and the way they experience classism as well because in New York
We speak about how like you're always like rubbing
Up against a billionaire in the elevator on the subway, but in Connecticut, it's like it's so definable like the different classes there
That's extreme poverty mirrors the India of America
I mean if you think about Gilmore Girls like Gilmore Girls
You have these really wealthy grandparents in Hartford and then in a town over to Hartford is the lowest
Income in all of Connecticut next to the highest income in all of Connecticut
It's like even talking about like Texas like it's I feel like it's another really profound place for you. Are we talking to that?
Went to Wesley. We were at Ackbar
And this gig I was like I went to Westlake and that was the high school that had amazing musicals cuz their parents donated so much
To the school is Westlake the one or crossroads or where all those suicides were happening
Harvard Westlake, I think okay
You're talking about Texas
There's a lot of Westlakes in this world, I understand of dying in lakes
Yeah, when I was in high school three girls drowned in Lake Austin on different voting of a year like yeah, like they got like
That's fucking crazy
like drunk
We're people kids driving drunk, but I keep having to straight do the serial killer allegedly in Austin kills men
Yes, and apparently he goes to Chicago - there's a there's a all these men all these young like all these male
Victims have washed up in Lady Bird Lake
Oh my god, and they think someone is and one guy allegedly was coming from a bar and he like felt extra fucked up
like maybe he'd been drugged and he was walking by the
Shoal Creek and he got someone pushed him over a bridge and he he survived but he fell like 20 feet
Well, and he said someone tried to kill me and they think someone is like following men home and like it's just like the
Off rainy street. Yeah, the rainy street ripper
There's a guy in Chicago there's also think there's a serial killer in Chicago who's doing that the gay men I
Tried to convince myself serial killer was like a 70s thing and now it's over just cuz like well there were more because of lead
Yeah, like lead poison. Yeah, they think there was like lead in the products when they were all like babies probably
I also it's much easier to catch a serial killer now. Yeah surveillance state and forensics
Yeah back then you could do whatever you want. Technology is like
Imagine being living in a time where you just like could kill someone and no one would ever
Find out meanwhile, we're all like fine. I mean like why is my friend at coffee without me?
There should have been a sex in the city arc where there's like a killer in New York like Son of Sam style on
Saving sex in the city a small podcasting project that I did on the side for a while
I there we had a serial killer really so yeah, I think it was Jonathan's episode
We what happened with the serial killer?
so I had this podcast called saving sex in the city 3 that was like
When sex in the city 3 was supposed to be filming and then they cancelled it at the last minute
I made a podcast that was like I would have a person on and they would
Pitch me just like a log line for each of the girls for a movie and then we would build the movie like
Improvisationally from scratch to finish and it could be anything like it like because the universe
Expanded so much like by sex in the city 2. It's like these women are like anything could happen to them
so it could go in any direction and then
I had a guest on who pitched like a serial killer plot line
Yeah, you can find it if you Google say or yeah Google saving sex in the city 3
We did one and we had like Samantha B. It was like a hologram
she was like a hologram version of
Predated like we really you really like
Future tripped into AI
Yes, she became she becomes like the toast of gay San Francisco
is living there working in tech and like
She hologram Sam is like the gays love her and Samantha's like I have to kill her
It's like how she's a drag queen in an episode before
Like let's call yeah, let's call Netflix once again and make it happen
Netflix exactly the exact people that put together
You guys take a shot
Yeah, just like well HBO Max clearly lost the sauce
so
Oh
Let's go there. Let's talk about Harvey turtle a real estate tycoon turned Chelsea's sweatshop
Into upward spots for the uppity and trendy. I just said so many
He has like a human he's like a he was human trap someone gave him a person to write
So he yeah, and she loves her position in his life
Well, it's to me if some psalm psalm she was
To her I felt like she was like this is the best I'm gonna get so I'm gonna fight for this
Right, but like I was like, baby. You've been human trafficked
Someone else has it have it locked up in a safe
Let's get you out and she's more concerned with like I'm gonna use really good English at Samantha to bully her
And then I'm gonna pretend like I don't know how to say asparagus in front of this guy
I'm obsessed with like the whole caste system
dialogue at the nail salon and then
Samantha going she might be on to something. I'm dating a guy with an actual
And then it's like the darkest servant scenario
And I just love like Samantha getting bullied by people
It's really fun when someone ruffles her feathers
She's blown away
Also Samantha
Yeah Samantha goes through some shit you know
She's always like getting targeted
And again because she's a powerful woman
Who's single
And I think
The worst thing you can be in New York
Yeah but I also loved how all the sets
In the early seasons were so cheap
Like it kind of reminded me of like
It all looked like sets from like real sex
In like 90s
Oh my god
It was this show on HBO
It was a reality show where they like
Normally
Usually taking place in New York City
But it was like
Following people
Exploring their fetishes
Wow
It's an incredible show
It was like after hours in New York City
It was always on like really late night HBO
So it was a surefire way
To like be able to see nudity
On television
Which really attracted me as a young person
And then like
But then also they were just doing like
Crazy sex shit on there
And it was usually people you don't want to
Like I was like these people would repel me
Like they're all like weird swingers
So it was like actually educational
Yeah and they would like do like
Tantra or like there would be like a woman
In like a loft in Tribeca
Dressed like a horse getting like
Finger blasted in front of like a crowd of people
Wow
Okay but that does sound hot
Yeah it was fun
I could do none of that please
And they don't have to like
It's like all visually there
Yeah
Wow HBO was really doing stuff
Taxi cab confession
They were so ahead of it
To me I'm like these are the most gorgeous sets
I've ever seen
I thought they were beautiful too
No I'm talking about like Mr. Turkle's house
Okay it's a mattress close to the ground
You know what
It's a very like
Eastern inspired interior decor
Girl do you know my sets are doing an episode
You're like oh I love the cutaways here
I love how they can do three plot lines at a time
You think you can just build the most gorgeous set every time
Yeah I do
Oh like
It's a 90s set
90s set
90s set
90s budget
Things were
You had bigger budget back then
Step it up
Maybe in Toronto
But girl you can't make a stretch in New York like that
I was obsessed with this Samantha
And this is like just how I thought men were with women
Where he's like
You can stay here as long as you want
Just like luxuriate
And she's like in her little negligee
Being like
Oh right
Like just loving life
And I was like
I can't wait to like date a man
Yeah like
It was just
What an era
No it is
Like that's what I thought being an adult woman would feel like all the time
And that's just not really happening much
No
No one's being like
Luxuriate
Order yourself food on my car
Order room service
They're always letting them luxuriate and order room service on this show
I need that
I know
No one trusts anyone in anyone's space anymore
It's also like
We have too many secrets
Everybody's just door dashes
Like everything that used to be fancy
It's like well now they just Uber
Yeah
Door dash
Like
It's hell
It's kind of hell
We live in hell
Damn
I think one of my favorite voiceovers
When they're like
They're talking about
How dim isn't
She's like playing with
Samantha
And then
Carrie's voiceover goes
Well she isn't so dim
That's um
Oh yeah that was crazy
The puns
The race politics on sex in the city
Definitely don't age well
No
But it is like a
Interesting mirror to the culture
At the time
100%
Especially knowing that it was like
So provocative and woke for the time
Yeah I mean even the episode
Like the famous
When they're on the roof
With all the trans women
And that was originally going to be
The series finale right?
Did you know that?
Yeah
They were gonna end
They thought the show wasn't gonna go on
So they were gonna end it
With all of them just like
On the roof together
Being single and fabulous
Which I actually think
Would have been a great ending
I actually like that
Not a bad ending but
Then we wouldn't have had
Four more seasons
Right
That wouldn't be ideal
But that season obviously
Is like Carrie's
Doing like
Her voice
And so it was very problematic
But like
It's pretty radical
No yeah
It was just to see them
Yeah
Yeah
It's
I would say exciting
Yeah
You know you get in there
And they're
And because
They are doing so much
For the progression of feminism
It's nice because
I mean they are crossing boundaries
But it's nice to have this
As like a historical touch point
We can go back to
And understand
What level of progress we have had
Yes
And partially it's like
The reason we had it
Just like that
Is because
They're trying to over correct
For the wrongs that were done
In the earlier seasons
But to view them
As even wrongs
I think is
An incorrect perspective
Thank you
Yeah
Because it's like
It's always going to be
When you're really like
In a zeitgeist moment
I think
That's the nature of it
It's like you're in that moment
And it's a representation
Of like what it was
At that time
And so that's what
This show did really well
Was like
It's going to talk about
Things like this
That women are
Talking about
And dating
And to look back on it
Like 30 years later
You're going to be like
Ooh that's a little bit cringe
But that just means
That at that time
It was like cooking
Yeah
You can't even approach
Like class politics
On TV
In the way they have now
To like make it so definable
Because
To even acknowledge
The wrong
Partially people
Will accuse you of
Like promoting
A specific kind of stereotype
Existing in this world
But
The acknowledgement
Is how we find
Correction inside the system
And the whole
Scene
In the nail salon
Is emblematic
Of the exact
Problem
We are dealing with today
Where it's like
You can't speak
Hushly about it
Like it's important
To speak up
Point it out
Like bring out
These moments
And that's why
Again you're pointing
At the character of Charlotte
And how she is
Such a thought leader
In her moments
And it's like yeah
It's really nice to watch
Them again
Tackle both sides
Of the issue
I actually think
Some of like that
Kind of frank
Class talk
Is like
Like obviously
There's like satires
On well
Now like succession
Like at the industry
And stuff
But like
I feel like the media
Because we are
At that tipping point
Where like
The class war
Like is probably coming
You know what I mean
And like it's already beginning
And I feel like
The media actually
Doesn't want us
To talk about it anymore
Yeah I mean
100%
They're like
We're not gonna
Greenlight this anymore
Yeah
Because it's actually
Getting y'all together
Yeah no
And like no one wants
So it's actually like
They were
They were revolutionaries
They were
Yeah and it sure seems
Like the biggest place
That class politics
Are even happening
Yeah
So much TV
That's greenlit now
It's like
White
Like white wine moms
Midwest
Like upper
Lee mobile
Like for white
The hunting wives
Yeah exactly
Every TV show
Do you guys watch that
I watch like one episode
I haven't watched it
Addicted
Can't wait for season two
You love it
Coming out so soon
Loved it
Okay
It's cause it was Texas
And it's like the moms
Are like that there
And nobody's ever
Talked about that
And I thought I made it
Up in my head
And then I saw that
Representation
Brittany Snow
What are you doing
You're crazy girl
I love her
I do too
She's incredible
I'm so glad she
Escaped that man
I know
Thank fucking god
From fucking selling
The OC
Yeah that was
Evil guy
It always happens
To our best girls
Like it's like
Sophia Bush
Like it's divorce
From Chad Michael Murray
It's like get out
Of there girl
Now she's happy
With a woman
Thank god
So Carrie going
To this actual party
So Carrie and the
Uppity party
Where there's no
Brown food allowed
And no smoking indoors
Which I get
It's Serena Bush's
Cocktail party
It's like I don't think
That's a crazy ass
Known for her father's money
I'm obsessed with
Serena
Serena Bush's lore
And just the way
That she moves around
Like her nipples
Her tits are out
In this like
Lurex
Gorgeous
Silver dress
Stunning
And she is just like
Moving through this party
With such ease
And she's so fucking hot
And I love Carrie being like
I knew her
When she was famous
For her father's money
And her biggest relationship
Was with her drug dealer
And like
Like Carrie is pissed
Much like Lexi Featherston
Like I want
A spinoff of
Serena Bush
I just love when
The side characters
In the show
Are like very fully realized
Where you're like
I know exactly
I get this woman
Totally
It reminds me even of the
When they go to the baby shower
Exactly
And you see
That woman
Which I forget her name
I feel like it was like
Lacey or something
Yeah
But
They always
Feel like
Very
Like fully baked
Yeah
Even if it's just like
A one sentence description
Of like who they are
Well they were all women
That like the writer
The female writers
All like
Percibly knew
They feel like
Caroline Bessette Kennedy
Honestly
Like I think
Candice Bachel
Holds onto her trauma
So bad
That she will take
Any opportunity
To get it out on her
Right
And I think we keep
Meeting like blonde women
Who like
Like very structural clothing
The body keeps the score
The body keeps the score
Yeah
Sarah Justin Parker
Walking in
That outfit
I would wear her today
It is
So fucking cute
So cute
Goal TA
Goal TA
Stunning
I was like Carrie
You're being a brat
She is being a brat
She doesn't even say hi
And she's just like
Lighting up
Yeah I was like
Very rude
That's so rude
And antisocial
Like even though
Like this woman is like
A like hottie snob
Like sorry
You're in her house
Like literally
You agreed to go to the party
Kill her with kindness
Be like how are you Serena
So good to see you
Instead she's like
Yeah hi
I'll be on the balcony
With Jeremiah
With the riff raff
It's like okay
Yeah you're
Sorry and I'll have to
Smoke inside
Also I was like kind of
I was as a smoker
I was like
When she's smoking
Over the spaghetti
I was like
Carrie put the seg down
Just in that moment
I'll smoke with you
We'll go outside
Yeah yeah
Me and you will smoke
On the street
But not
Come on
Come on
It's just jarring
Even to see
Smoking on a patio
In New York
Cause it's just
You can't do it
I know
It was incredible
To see like
Her really be like
I'm not even gonna try
At this party
Big needs to come find me
Cause basically
She's mad big
Still hasn't said I love you
So that's why
She's taking it out
On Serena
Yeah she's taking it out
On everyone
But then, thank God, Jeremiah's
there to like remind her of her downtown
life and realize like fuck
this guy fuck his friends
I don't know these people either Jeremiah
Jeremiah's hot he was
him being like check out my new tattoo
I love when she looks like she's
blowing him yeah and Serena was
like she goes
excuse me
and then just walks away I was
like that is power and then immediately
tells Big and Big is like so Serena
just said you were giving head
to the cater waiter I did
like that Big like immediately was like
this is a misunderstanding so he's
like I don't know what you did but it needs
to stop yeah it's so
like a mommy and like I don't care where
you were but you're needing to come home now
he's daddy how much older
is he than Carrie do you
think it's like 10
like 32 and he's 40 something
he's like 43 12 years
okay yeah that's daddy
though that is daddy
but I like when she goes his name
he's not he's not just the cater waiter
his name is Jeremiah and he's a very
important performance artist
he stands naked and like
jerks off
he paints with his dick
and then Carrie like is getting fucked up
and she's like well I don't want to go
you go without me babe she's always
starting a scene and she loves
to create a scene with Big
she doesn't do this with her other boyfriends
it's always in public it's always at
these uppity parties yeah and she's always raising her
voice trying to kind of humiliate
him yeah
downtown
darling sad it's like so distinctly where she is it's interesting to see her
like she's allowed into any space she wants but she rejects the opportunity
because she feels that holding on to this subculture where she feels more
important it's more interesting for her because it's where she has status and she
immediately is a lower status in any of these rooms just because see what
doesn't come from money and it's from Connecticut though right Charlotte's
from Connecticut yeah she is but she's from like she's middle Connecticut the Carrie diary
is right I need to watch that I know it was really good I remember watching in
high school mean like this is the best show no it's actually a really good show
and the woman who put the girl who plays Samantha like when she's the is
incredible the door is unbelievable and Carrie's best gay friend is so cute and
like it was Austin Butler before he did fucking if it was a project and a friend
of mine Nadia Dajani who's an actress she she played Nina Katz Nina Katz was in the Carrie Diary
she was she played Carrie Nadia played Carrie's dad's girlfriend in the Carrie Diaries full circle
amazing but we should do a rewatch of Carrie oh she was she wasn't Nina no she wasn't playing
I thought you were saying no no no no no but she played she still was in it but I was like wow
but not Nina Katz is such a huge figure to me too really you can say it why not no that's the face
she makes remember the girl the face about Ada she's like I don't know I don't know I don't know
yeah yeah I dated right after you broke up with them and then Carrie's like spiraling yeah okay
so they go and get this this line I love they went to have a couple of pictures of margaritas
downtown yeah I was like you guys went and like did coke yeah it's like two of you got a couple
pictures like you're they're singing Jeremiah was a bulldog or whatever bullfrogs I don't know
you're not a three dog night fan I know that song from raise your voice starring Hilary Duff because
the choir sings it I love that it's also the beginning of the big chill oh it's also in the
incredible Sandra Bullock movie 28 days what happens in those 28 days she goes to rehab
and that it always plays that song as like the representative like her crazy tumultuous
childhood with an alcoholic mother I'm gonna watch that 20 days it is so good the cast is
stacked the cast who plays the people to rehab like it's people that you're like oh I know them
I know Diane Ladd is in it like everyone's in it wait okay let's watch that tonight the guy who
plays like the German guy that comedian oh my god that movie's so Elizabeth Perkins they got
Elizabeth Perkins yeah she plays her sister I don't know that girl but she sounds awesome you'd
recognize her once you saw her I'm gonna do my homework tonight you'd know her it's a classic
classic movie 28 days it was like an indie movie for Sandra at the time it was indie it was like
edgy okay I love when she did edgy I love her when she that's the edgiest movie of them all what's the
one where she has to drive that bus speed speed I remember watching that and that was like the
coolest movie like that was like one of the first like big girl movies I watched as a kid and I
remember being like what the hell is gonna happen you guys I know they were so hot together her and
Keanu movies used to feel magical I know like they used to film in LA yeah I was like so why do you
live here they don't everything shoots in Toronto or Vancouver we're asking ourselves this every day
confront that question whatever okay so I personally thought Jeremiah and Carrie fucked
thank god they didn't I Carrie makes such self-sabotage decisions like this specifically
is like you don't get what you want so you go and cheat on your man who then who gave you a
5k
purse and you're mad and you're gonna fuck this guy and then hide it you hid it from him and then
you're like their relationship is incredibly dysfunctional but they are endgame the way
it is so dysfunctional I want that I want it he's so hot the way he even even the way he says he
goes I fucking love you okay like that's so you're like oh no well you know I fucking love you I do
it's like it's a small
sacrifice it's like it's so nice when someone gives you so little and they give you they give you
something shut up she deserves she was allowed to cheat on him as a little treat totally make out
just made out and a makeout pass out is pretty harmless this is the second time Carrie has like
fallen asleep with a hot guy in her bed and not fucked him I love that I'm interested in that
please or it's alcoholism yeah either way please
that's power in its own right and on that note let's cut to a break and when we get back we're
gonna find out what girls you are and we're back from the break y'all we have a really
important question okay okay go girl what girl are you
um you can go one at a time so I always identified as a Carrie as a young in my
20s I was like she is the moment she's the woman that I yearn to be and the life I yearn to live
as I've gotten older I think I'm a mixture of Carrie Miranda and Samantha yeah I think like my
sense of humor and way of looking at the world is very Samantha um my sex life is very Miranda
and I just like still will always feel like I just want to be Carrie at the end of the day
Charlotte's not a part of your journey Charlotte no but I love her yeah yeah I think I'm a mix
between Carrie and Charlotte I could see that I think writer a little self-destructive you feel
like somebody who would be friends with Samantha but you're not her no but I've I mean I've I've
been a whore in my day so I'm right so I'm not but like Charlotte true but I but Charlotte is a
self limiting whore like she she puts she puts constraints on herself that shouldn't exist and
I I relate to that and I relate to like being sort of suffocated by your upbringing and like
wanting to fit a mold and being a people pleaser so I relate to Charlotte a lot and I think I'd
like to think I'm I think Charlotte's nice yeah and believes and I think I'm I think I can be
nice I think I'm pretty nice you're nice but I'm also I can be Carrie because I'm like I can be a
rap and we yeah we got that I'm sorry my friend's bullying you on our podcast it's gay on gay violence
shots fired girl what girl are you like a 90 um I well I feel like a Steve you're Steve yeah because
I'm amazing at picking up pizza places and I actually can't figure this one out what do you
think I am in this episode you are Steve in that you would like sabotage a healthy relationship
because of something going on
I think you're Serena Bush
excuse me excuse me I can take that your tits forward Serena was also like she was a little
into it she's always like I would kind of love to hang with her she's just always looking at things
her nastiest version of herself is still like a ball yeah and she's like moving around the room
she's like complimenting people's purses I was like she seems fun
I think it's like I've known her for a long time she's actually not that bad like he's not just for
her he's like yeah she's a little bit of a free ball but like we have fun but when she saw Carrie
what she thought was her just like sucking Cark on the on the terrace a part of her was like I miss
those days no yeah excuse me no she loved it he's Carrie as like a full person and it's like
I know that girl and also I have to say Carrie started it she was initially the very rude one and
would not acknowledge or she was like she was hey and then tries to smoke a cig so you are gonna get
excuse me and then I am gonna tell your boyfriend that you were blowing the cater waiter on the terrace
- I think that's the only natural thing to do.
But anyways, this week I am Carrie.
Just because I love to get mad
and I will get drunk at a party and do something I regret.
- Yeah, we all do it.
We've all done it.
- Someone has to.
- Okay, we have one more segment
called Getting Carried Away.
- Well, don't be a bitch.
- I'm not being a bitch, I'm just being myself.
- Lara, what are you getting carried away with this week?
- What am I getting carried away with?
I'll tell you, actually.
I am getting carried away with my own closet.
I was inspired by "And Just Like That"
to consider what a new closet would look like for me
and what it would feel like to have an actual closet
that holds all my clothes and that feels luxurious.
So I embarked on that mission.
And now I'm kind of getting a Carrie Bradshaw-esque closet
that it's like you walk through on your way to the bathroom.
So I'm literally living a Carrie Bradshaw closet journey.
- Damn, that's stunning.
I'm like, can you put up a YouTube vlog about this?
- You should, Lara.
- I'm documenting it and once it's done,
I will release a short documentary
about the making of my closet.
- It's gonna win a Tony.
- It's gonna win a Tony
and then there will be a musical version.
Duff Cameron can play you.
- Oh my God, yes, I'm in.
- The thing that I was getting carried away with
in this episode specifically is the suit culture
of Miranda being like, he can't wear a corduroy.
He has to wear this suit.
Suit culture doesn't exist because of COVID-19.
My entire childhood, I thought I was gonna be forced
to wear a blouse every day of my adult life.
I had to wear chiffon tops every day.
I thought just legally that was gonna have to happen to me.
I was like, by the way,
I work in cheetah print pajamas every day.
I'm almost 30.
I've gotten pretty far hopping on Zoom with pajamas on.
No one can catch me.
And it's just like,
you can't get away with showing up to an event.
I mean, think about celebrities on the red carpet.
They're doing performance art now.
You could dress in a meat dress.
Nothing, there's no rules anymore.
- Anything goes.
This corduroy suit would have been pretty baller, actually.
And people would have been like,
who is this hot fucking bartender?
- He would have turned heads 'cause he has swag.
- I know.
- So you're saying like the corporate days are over.
- Corporate days are over.
And especially like Gen Z realized like,
oh, playing the corporate game
won't lead to a stable life anyways.
So it's like no one's-
- COVID really changed the rules.
She rewrote, she rewrote the book of life.
- COVID rewrote the book of life.
And like, I literally am like,
everything I was taught as a teen was false.
Because they changed up the rules.
- I know what I'm getting carried away with.
- What are you getting carried away with?
- I'm getting carried away
with the fire.
I'm getting carried away with the fire,
keeping track of the fire, monitoring it.
- Does it have a name?
- Explain what the fire is for people who aren't LA based.
- It's like a warehouse that does like food storage cooling.
And it's like, there's some weird chemicals in it
that are like keeping the fire,
like they're unable to get to it.
It's like, I just, let me read you the explanation.
- They're like the second largest provider of processed meat.
- Yeah, there's like meat, meat's about to burn.
- Like Chomps or what kind of processed meat?
- Chomps is burning down LA.
- Fuck.
- That's gonna suck for people trying to get their protein.
- Yeah.
- It's amazing it's one warehouse lasting like four days.
- One warehouse in Boyle Heights
has been burning since Wednesday.
- Yeah.
- And continues to burn. - Keeps reigniting.
- And I thought that the fire had come and it had gone.
- No, girl, it's still here.
- And when I was driving here, I was like,
God, it's so smoggy today.
But no, it's just the fire is still burning.
- It's crazy. - I think this was yesterday.
- Okay.
- Why can't they stop at you still?
This is crazy.
- It's like people haven't heard of like water
on the fire. - Yeah.
I'm like, y'all actually famously have water here.
You are next to ocean.
- No, I'm just saying like this also--
- No, I know, I know.
- There was like another thing
that was overheating recently in Long Beach.
It was like some sort of, not a warehouse,
but like a factory that it was overheating
and it was like an emergency evacuation
because they were like, if it heats up too much,
it's gonna explode.
And cover like toxic waste everywhere.
And in my head, I'm like, okay,
we'll fucking pour some water on it and cool it off.
Like, what is the fucking holdup?
I just don't understand.
Like, it's pretty easy. - This is LA, guys.
- Okay, so there's a--
- Get a hose and hose it the fuck down.
- You need to be ahead of fire department in this town.
- I think I could actually do a great job.
- Okay, so there is a chemical on the roof
similar to basically rubber.
So theoretically, this is quote from--
- The water just bounces off like a trampoline.
- This is info from somebody
I follow in Meetsicle who's an amazing LA native
who always has the beat on LA shit.
There is a chemical on the roof similar to basically rubber.
So theoretically, it's basically a tire fire,
which are impossible to put out.
My dad was a firefighter for 50 years.
I'm not a fire bug, I promise.
- Whoa.
- So it's just like burning, burning, burning.
- We need an extinguisher.
It sounds like some fire extinguishers get in there.
- We gotta get Wiley Ford in there to spray it down.
- Wiley Ford can act in the movie version
of the Boyle Heights fire. - Yeah, Backdraft.
- Yeah, Backdraft. - Two.
- The Backdraft reboot.
- The child that pissed out the fire in France.
- But I'm also-- - It's very similar to that.
- I'm also getting carried away with my dog.
- Oh, yeah, your dog that you're a father of.
You're father number one now.
- You are just carried away in general
being that you are Kerry O'Donnell.
- I'm just, I'm kind of always getting--
I'm kind of just like-- - You're always
getting carried away. - Always getting carried away.
And not always in bad reasons.
Just getting carried away, you know?
And I love it.
When I got my earring at Christmas, I was carried away.
- Did you just get your ear pierced?
- Yeah.
- Evan's been trying to get up the strength
to do that for four years.
- Oh my God, just get a piercing.
- Okay, you should just do it.
- Is it one or two?
- I'm giving you support. - Do you have both?
- No, just one.
Simon has-- - Look, I have two.
- You guys have matching?
- Okay, I have double.
- A double. - Simon has one on his right
and I have one on my left, yeah.
- But what are you gonna talk about
if you have your ears pierced?
- What do you mean?
- 'Cause you know, you go to a party
and get to talk about for 25 to 30 minutes
if you're gonna get your ears pierced or not.
- You just need to do it.
- Then you'll have another subject that's my go-to.
- And then you can talk about your journey of getting in.
What's the healing process been like?
- I'm telling you, if you're kind of even circling it--
- I'll do it, I'll do it.
- No pressure, but I'm saying if you're circling it,
there's a reason why you're circling it
and you should do it.
- I keep throwing party falls
like I'm gonna get my ears pierced
and inviting my friends to my house
and then we don't do it.
- What if you go, do you just want one piercing
or are you trying to have a story?
- I know. - You want both.
- I would go for symmetry.
- Okay.
- But just one on each? - We gotta go to Claire's
at the same time.
- Go to Maria Tash before you leave LA.
- Go to Maria Tash.
And there's also like another place.
- You can't, you just have to clean them.
- Just clean it with a little alcohol.
- If you get them here too, it's the recovery was,
I cleaned for like a couple months,
but it was so painless
and I basically had no like after effects.
- But are you a side sleeper?
- Yeah.
- There's certain pillows that you can get
that will make you not go side
if you need to like stabilize that.
- I need to have my ears pierced more than anything.
- Then you sleep with a special pillow
that makes you feel okay with not being on your side.
- Sides need to have your ears pierced.
- Yeah, if you are a side,
you have to have your ears pierced.
- Okay, okay.
- That's why I got these ones.
'Cause I sleep, I go to sleep on this side.
- Laura's a side.
- Laura's a side.
- I did get like a helix here
and I had to sleep on the other side.
- No, Samantha, a side piece?
- No, a side is like, a side is a-
- Did you know what they were saying?
- Yeah.
- A side is a gay guy.
- Let her, she got it.
- Yeah, guys, let me handle this.
- Okay.
- Educate me.
- A side is a gay guy that doesn't wanna do like mouth
or butt. - No, no, no.
- They just wanna like lay next to.
- Like a pillow princess.
- Right?
- Oral only.
- Oral only.
- It's mostly oral, yeah.
- They don't wanna do penetration.
- Why is it called a side?
- It's unexplainable, but beautiful.
- But sides are becoming,
sides are really becoming more,
coming to the forefront more.
- So they're like oral only?
- Oral only, no pen.
- And they won't penetrate, nor will they get penetrated?
- They're not into anal.
- One of my good friends, Connor Janday, is a famous side.
And-
- He's so funny.
- He's hilarious.
- He's so fucking funny.
- He's the best side we have.
- A famous side.
- But he keeps going around town being like,
oh, this gay guy said that the reason,
like oral penetration is penetration.
And it's like, he keeps saying like,
that's why Trump won the election.
- Yeah, that's his joke.
- Well, by the way, that's me.
I said that.
I think oral penetration is penetration.
It's an orifice, that's the definition of it.
- Oral sex is sex.
- It is a penetration.
- Oral sex is sex.
Please, by definition.
- Yeah, otherwise gay isn't real.
- I loved you being like-
- I thought we were talking about side sleeping.
- Right.
- And I was like, I'm so hardcore sat.
Maybe I am a Charlotte after all.
- Right.
- You kind of, I was gonna say-
- I am a little bit.
- You are a little Charlotte.
'Cause Laura is like immersed in queer culture.
Like she is that bitch.
- She is that bitch.
- And she, but you are,
you do come from like a sheltered upbringing.
So like sometimes-
- I have an innocence about me.
- She has an, you have an innocence about you.
Which is really, which is charming.
- But you're a cyber bully.
- I did cyber bully.
- There's something innocent about this.
- No, but there's innocence there.
- Yeah, 'cause you can't go face to face.
- It was like not really knowing the trouble
that I was causing.
- Laura's innocent.
- Right, but Oklahoma.
- Oklahoma.
- In Oklahoma, cyber bullying is completely different
than like, imagine cyber bullying in like-
- It wasn't like cyber bullying on the Upper East Side.
- It's different.
- You know, it's not like Gossip Girl.
- When we come from the East Coast people,
we are, we're not as innocent.
- No.
- You knew what you were doing.
- I knew what I was doing.
- I come across as like, I'm nice, but I'm not innocent.
- I'm just like, I'm usually like, oh, this-
- I'm nice, but I'm not innocent.
- I approach things like, oh, this'll be funny.
And then realize like, it wasn't, it wasn't funny.
It was harmful.
Um, what are you getting carried away with, your ears pierced or what?
No, I was just like, this episode of TV is so nice because they base it off of Edith
Worden.
Her writing this episode is based off of, and now every TV show is based off Sex and
the City.
And it's like, it was nice when we had such clear references from literature and translates
to TV, even when it's not like a direct, it's not like one for one, it's nice that we have
that.
Like, everything feels so repetitive because we use TV as a reference instead.
Well, thank God Reese Witherspoon is like, we're going to turn book into movie.
Thank God for Hello Sunshine.
Yeah.
But that still is referential because they're still are using a TV show plus a book.
Right.
That's why it's like, it's like, it's pluribus, which I want to love.
But every time I started, I started playing Candy Crush instead.
It just doesn't get its claws in you.
I loved it.
That's how I kind of was with Widow's Bay.
It's hard.
I loved Widow's Bay too.
I can't, I couldn't like.
I watched it, but I felt like I needed a phone with me at all times.
