Sex and the City S1E11: “The Drought” with Brooke Averick

The podcast explores a pivotal episode of *Sex in the City* where Carrie’s involuntary fart becomes a powerful symbol of her emotional anxiety and her struggle to be seen as a real, autonomous person. The moment highlights the show’s groundbreaking portrayal of women’s sexuality, showing how emotional vulnerability and desire are often suppressed. Carrie’s emotional spiral contrasts with Big’s detached, routine response, emphasizing communication breakdowns in relationships. The episode also reflects on how women are traditionally seen as passive recipients of sex, while the show challenges this by showing women actively seeking intimacy. The discussion expands to Phoebe Berman’s new rom-com, which centers on a woman’s journey to overcome intimacy anxiety, mirroring Carrie’s experience. The group reflects on how modern culture increasingly validates female desire, especially in contrast to past portrayals. They also examine how miscommunication and emotional repression are common in romantic relationships, with characters often hiding their true feelings. The episode is celebrated for its boldness in addressing taboo topics like female bodily expression and emotional honesty. The conversation underscores how women's sexual agency—whether through direct action, desire, or emotional openness—has evolved in media and culture, with shows like *Sex in the City* paving the way. The discussion concludes with a deep appreciation for the show’s nuanced portrayal of complex emotional dynamics, where vulnerability and honesty are both painful and necessary.

But I do think the fart symbolizes the emotional like I actually do. I actually do the fart symbolizes here. I love that. Welcome back to Girl's Relodge. A podcast about girls TV and girls on TV. I'm Amelia Rathaler and I'd have in Lazarus today. We have such an exciting guys. She flew in from LA. We flew her first class just to be on this couch. It's Brooke Adorek. Thank you so much for flying me in first class. I loved every second of it. Delph is strong. Yep. How did you guys see this spirit? It's going to go under. Why? No. They might have this week even. I didn't know that for parts this week because fuel has gone up so much. They're selling themselves for parts. They're selling themselves for parts, girl. And they keep her voting to me. They're keeps sending me emails. They're saying one way tickets, 41 dollars. I'm like, 'cause they can't promise the way. Yeah, I bet. I bet. I've never flown on spirit. Oh, really? Like, I don't have anything against it, except for just like what everyone has against it. Of course. But I've never, no, I've just never gotten the opportunity. You have one week, girl. I have one week. You need to go back to LA. I might not make it in time, but I think that's going to be okay. Well, we must give her a trip on spirit. So you are in love. Oh, my God, it's huge. Thank you. We're so excited you have a book coming out. Yes. That's so major. Tell us everything. Thank you for having me to talk about it. It is called Phoebe Berman's going to lose it, and it's a rom-com. It is about a very, very anxious, 29-year-old who's a hopeless romantic. And she has really bad intimacy anxiety, so she hasn't lost her virginity yet. And she has 30 days until she turns 30, and so she's using those 30 days to do everything she can to lose her virginity. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. And so she goes from having no love life to three possible love interests in those 30 days. And so it's like a love square. Wait, this is so excited. Thank you. It's every chapter a day. Every chapter is like how many days left she has. Oh, my God, that's perfect. It's like-- It's like the pit for a rom-com. No, no. I don't watch the pit, but I love that. That makes me happy. Well, you're done it, girl. Yeah. Congratulations. Thank you. You heard it here first. I'm like, we should get that quote yet. I am begging for the pit to be a rom-com, though. Wait, there is no rom-com. I know. It's like one of those shows where you think they'd be making out because it's like crazy not about it. Right. They don't even-- There's none. Not even a hint. Well, there's come history. So do you think something will happen? So you can build the fanfiction. The lesbians on Twitter are like, so they're all in love and fucking. Yeah. And they're having an origin later. But it's like, well, no. Do you guys have any crushes on the pit? My friends in love with Dr. Abbott. Oh, yeah, that's a good one. OK. I think Dr. Robbie. And that's the main one. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Who doesn't love a, like, a slightly damaged man who has a bit of a belly in a Jewish disposition? It sounds-- And he's tall. Sounds right. A white alley. Employed. Yeah. Well, employed. And good friends with George Clooney, so. Hello. I wish they would make like a version with no medical stuff for me because I just can't do, like, surgery. Oh, really? Yeah. But I would totally love to watch it in an episode before. Are you watching before? I don't think I'm going to. Yeah, because it's-- It's scary. Yeah. It's like leaving without the music. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to. I love the first two seasons, and I just think we've moved on as a culture. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. What's your vibe with this show? And did you first see it? I first saw this show probably, like, right after college. I was, like, 22. So kind of late, I've always loved it. I would say I'm not, like, I can't quote it. Right. I'm not at that level, but I've seen every episode. I know every story arc, but it's not like I'm quoting every episode. Oh, please. You got enough on your brain. So you were never in New York, right? No, but I grew up in Philly. OK. And then you said, I'm actually all set. I'm going to head to the rest. I said, all good. I was teaching preschool in Philly, and then COVID hit. And I was teaching preschool on the Zoom. Whoa, yeah, it was, like, not real. Yeah, so you said, I got a pivot talk online. Yeah, so I pivoted to just being on my phone a lot. And then that's how I, you know, got on TikTok. And then I just was like, I'm going on it. There's a show where a man think about, like, a preschool teacher who wants to just write a rom-com. And it's like, that's who should be writing a rom-com, honestly. Thank you. And she's a preschool teacher in the book, believe it or not. Oh my god. She's not. She's an LA. Oh my god. Is the girl like you? Or not even at all? It's a good question. Yes, in the sense that I am also very anxious. And I definitely channeled all of my anxieties into her. But no, in the sense that we don't really have a similar personality. She's very type A. OK. And I'm very type B. Oh my god. OK, work. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. Come on, it worked. You worked on the book. Work, that's what I'd say. Well, this is organized type B. But like, this is the perfect sex in the city episode because Carrie's being so anxious. Yes, this is good. She's an overthinker, which is perfect. Yeah, she's overthinking. Oh, yeah, wait. It's perfect. It's such a good connection. When you describe the book, I was like, well, we've kind of done it better every day to ourselves. Well, guys, we are covering season 1 episode 11 today. The drought. This is, of course, the famous episode where they're all looking through the window, eating gummy worms and watching the couple have sex for one hour. And then also, it's literally the A-plot of the episode is that Carrie farted, which is beautiful. TV's never yours to do that, you know? It's incredible. And like a very real issue that like, I'm glad they tackled. It's an anxiety that, yeah, in the way that like, nobody had spoken about that on television before I bet. No, truly. But it happens to everyone at some point. Yeah. Yeah. And Carrie's journey with it, she was being kind of a lot. But-- Well, come on, please. Well, she's Carrie. Well, she's Carrie. I don't know what else you expect from her after-- by the way, after 11 episodes of the show. Right, you know what? I always think she's different. No, but you don't remember her, right? You don't remember her better. And I think that's the true beauty of it. Has it been a while since you've watched? We haven't recorded a sex in the city up in like, over a month. So it was like, I've taken a break from her. Got it. But now I'm back. And you know, the mind always likes to heal. Like, so remember things with a silver lining, of course. So we come back to it and go, oh, Carrie's still has the crazy girls here. Yeah, sure. Cherylist still has a perfect blow out in every scene. Yeah, it's incredible. Some background on this episode, it originally prepared August 16, 1998. So we were all probably toddlers, not on Zoom. Yep. And women were still-- So the thing in this episode is like, Carrie and Samantha and all of them being like, oh, no, he can't know. I'm human. And it's like the idea that back then, like, women were seen as objects. And then women also were like, I'd like to be seen as an object and not a human. Whereas I feel like the culture now is like, so I'm a person. You know what I mean? Wow. Well, city, having a lot of big parties, so freely. It wasn't even like this could never be an A-plot in a show that came out today. It's so true. And then their own subjugation to their objectification. Yes. Of course. Not to get serious. Well, please. I mean, and I think this whole show is kind of a emulation of that point, though. But this episode is a great job because it really holds kind of the seethis that women are just as horny as men, which is what we go into this show. Because it's so true. Yeah. Yeah. The seabird carries, like, right now. Yeah. I would say not in this chair at this second-- Not in the World Trade Center. But in general, not in the World Trade Center. I will say, and this is like a C-plot of the show or of this episode. I'm on a lot of anti-anxiety meds. Oh, that's me side. So I would say I'm not usually physically horny, but I'm always emotionally very horny. Oh, and that's how you get to write a wrong call. Yeah. It is not for an emotionally celibate. No, it's not. Yeah, I suffer from extreme emotional horoniness. Oh, my God. Oh, my gosh. That drives the girl to do a lot. It'll drive a girl. I am just glad you found an outlet. Because I've seen much scarier things. I'm so relieved to have found this. Oh, please. Come on. And Phoebe's very horny, too, which is amazing. Because I feel like people think like people who don't have experience don't feel that way. Yeah. But they catch. She's like horny. She's just anxious. She's very horny. And she's very anxious. I think a lot of gents can really respond to that. Yeah. I think that's really emulated now. Ultimately, it's like the romanticization is so much more heightened for those who have less experience. Yeah. Totally. And I think it's a tip that kind of rebounds us is that people that have less sexual partners have a much lower divorce rate. Every sexual partner you have. Really? I think it's like a compounding percentage, like losing 7%, like a 7% chance more of a divorce. So those who have only had one partner have much lower stakes of actually getting divorced. Where did you find these statistics? I picked it up in my life. You picked it up. You picked it up. It's one of those things you see, and you don't forget that. And you don't forget that. Especially when they have like 10 women, and then like six of them are filled. You go, oh, yeah. Six of them are filled in. That is something you can't forget. I'm learning so much. You go, I mean, we have to say curious please. So we hold open. And it's like Kerry talking about how everybody in New York is so horny. And the city is actually famously about getting laid. And it's the city that never sleeps, because everybody is up all night trying to get laid. And so that's where we begin. Is there a beautiful circle people there too, by the way? It's something like a wrap that's self-together. - That's a tick-tock, it could just reel for over. - Hello, so we get the first scene, her and Big are cozy, didn't a bed together. And then she lets out a utsi-tutsi, which sends her into an emotional spiral as we were just talking moments earlier. And I just think like the symbolization of the fart itself, like it's the perfect metaphor that we have to show again, like carry as like the subjugator of her own objectification. - Right, like she literally is monologueging about how she's like, yeah, I'm a human, but he can't know that. It's like girl. - Right, you can be yourself. But I do think the fart symbolizes the emotional like, 'cause I actually do. - Does it symbolize that? - It's like the green light in kind of the great Godspeed. It's very similar, but basically carry freaking out and at the end, Big is like, why are you being crazy? She's like, this is me. It's like her being emotionally afraid to show herself. And then like being like, okay, fart it. I physically like, whatever. Now I'm emotionally like opening up to you. And it's like they only fuck again when carries like, I'm freaking out and Big's like, it's okay girl. - Yeah. - Let's kiss. - Kind of. - Oh. - It's so funny. It's interesting that you saw it that way, 'cause that's not how I perceived it at all. - Did you know what I'm saying? - Yeah, I do. - Okay. - I think I agree. - Yeah. - What do you think? - Well, the fucking came because I mean, there's something I'm disconnecting it and throughout the whole season one, Big is having to like, rifle through carries emotions as she only, we'll say, as we were talking about even in a pit episode, where what is being said is not what's the underlying message is behind like the meta message. Carrie's so bad at communicating her distinct feeling, but instead like throws like truth bombs at Big that are meant to like confuse him. But in reality, she's trying to like point to something more serious in their relationship. And this whole episode is her, that's being like, you don't wanna fuck me, you don't think I'm sexual anymore. And it's big just operating kind of in status quo. So complete like, stable in his relationship with Carrie, where she is so unsabilized and needs like to be regulated. And then the moment that like they can see two people fuck and like the onset of like, if you see two people fucking, there's nothing horny or an earth than that. Like that to me. - It's heated right, Laurie. - I mean, please, yeah, that is gonna set up a success. - They could have just been horny. - Yeah. - Yeah. - This is why they put horny and gay bars. - Yeah. I like the idea of two people experiencing the exact same event in just like two completely different ways. Like this fart sending Carrie into like an existential crisis about her relationship, thinking it's the end. Like literally questioning her existence and like, who am I? And then big, it's literally a non-issue for big. So like, I love watching people handle the exact same situation. - Literally. - And to completely different ways. - Carrie is like, I can't go in to work. I'm having flashbacks. - It was like the end of, yeah. Like the end of her life as she knew it. - Yeah, and Mr. Biggs like, I'm gonna go buy a whoopie cushion. And he like barely thought about it. And was like, oh yeah, the other night, like when you threw yourself at me, I guess that was weird. Like he wasn't even really. - Right, he was like, well, you never called me. - Right. - Like I thought it was over. - Right, right. - Well, I think in a way, it's like Biggs older. And I think every girl, I think what the difference is like, maybe every one of Biggs' girlfriends is far down in front of him. But Carrie hasn't farted in front of everyone of her boyfriends. Or it's-- - I would say none of Biggs' girlfriends have farted in front of him. 'Cause I see all of like Biggs' girlfriends as like a Natasha. - Yeah. - I don't even think she farted. - No, they got divorced before that could happen. - Yeah. - Yeah, but don't you think she's so carefree though? - I think when a girl's hair is like that effortlessly straight, you can feel comfortable farting and popping up. - I would think like she had all of like the farts surgically removed from her. (laughing) - Before. - It does become clear when Carrie tells Samantha Eoga, Samantha has gotten all her farts physically removed. - Yes. - 'Cause she's like, wow, that sucks. I would never allow that to happen. - Yeah. - Yeah, it's interesting to see how all the girls reacted differently. - Yeah. - I know, but it's like, we'll be, I don't like, everyone in America has IBS at this point. Like, you're telling me, this is the first time that the one's been farted in front of big. I don't know. I have a hard time believing that. This is when we're introducing Doritos to the world, not taking it away. - Right, right, right. I hadn't considered the Doritos entering the space. - You know, you can do a lot to the microbiome girl. It sets it off. - Oh, of course. - The processed foods of it all. - Well, let's break down kind of the four main plots. So we've got Carrie being like, oh my God, big's gonna leave me, oh, we are not fucking. It's been like three nights in a row where we just like slept together but like didn't even sleep together. - Right. - And then Miranda's like, well, I am literally dry as a desert. - Yeah, she hasn't had sex in three months. - Yeah, and then Samantha is like, I'm gonna choose to be celibate for this yogi. I think it's like giving no no November. She's like, because then it will pay off more in December. And then Charlotte's like, my guy is being so patient with me. But then it's like, she wants to fuck him. And he's like, I'm on pro's act bitch. - Yeah. - Is there really a specific plot line in this episode that feels closest to maybe yours or Phoebe's story about a choice in celibacy? - I mean, I think just Carrie in the overthinking, but I would say there's not much of sex in the city that reminds me of Phoebe, even though like she would want to be that way. Like she mentions, like I'm supposed to be in my sex in the city era. This is so embarrassing. - Yeah. - And I definitely don't, that's the only reason I watch the show and think of Phoebe is, 'cause like it's what she wants in December. - It's 'cause she doesn't have it. - Yeah. - It's very much Shoshana and season one. - Very much Shoshana. Yeah. - Which is beautiful. - Yeah. - I'm like, Shoshana would love this book. - Shoshana would love this book. This book is for the Shoshana. - I don't know if this does create energy. It's the one thing I went in it. I'm like, this girl's anxious for a reason. She's at the least. - Right. - I do think so. Like the whole, like the reason to yogi is holding on or seeming retention is because he feels that it isn't viewing him with energy. Like the, I think you're like, you're able at times on, honestly, my opinion is like, if you hold celibacy at times, you can actually channel that into energy in other creative sources or fulfillment. Potentially. - Well, it's the same as like fasting. It's like the same mindset of like starving yourself. - Yeah. If you have like one gummy bear, or you're gonna go for a second, you know? - Yeah. - But if you hold off the gummy bears, then maybe you can say off for a while. - Yeah. - Do you lose the taste? - I am like, do I eat gummy bears so much because I'm not fucking enough? - Yes, please. - You have to tell it somehow. - My nerd's gummy clusters addiction. - Oh my God, thank you for bringing up nerd's gummy clusters. I love them and I don't like, like candy, really. I love chocolate, but I don't like gummy candy. - Right. - Except for nerd's clusters. - There's something about them. Apparently they like did a bunch of studies to figure out like what would make. I like the signs we're bringing to the public today. - The human brain like most excited and addicted to candy. And then they literally created nerd's gummy cluster 'cause the gummy and the nerd and the tart and the change and the favoraju chew it is like scientific. - They nailed it. - Yeah. - It's like how every time I hear pink pantries, I'm like, "Gee's gonna do a nerd gummy cluster of pop stars." - It reminds me of the like gobshopper from Willy Wonka. - That's what I always think of. - Really? - It never yeah, everlasting gobshopper. - Are you sucking on your nerd's gummy clusters? - Hmm, occasionally. - Okay, okay, interesting experience. - I kind of eat them slowly. Like I'll kind of like do the, like kind of crunch on the nerd's first and then kind of get to that little chewy bit. - See, there's storytelling in the nerd's gummy cluster. - It's like a layered experience. - Well, it's perfect for millennial 'cause it's experiential. - Yeah. - And millennial's love experiences. - That's true. - Anyway, let's cut to our first break really quick. I'm 1996 Okay, and I saw this thing on tiktok that was like if you are cusp and you have younger siblings Then you're Gen Z and if you have older siblings in your millennial just because of like what you've been exposed to Right and I I feel that to be true because I've younger siblings and I do I think I do feel more Gen Z because of it Yeah, and again America is forgotten about only children. Yeah as they love are you an only child? No, I have a younger sibling So in that way I am Gen Z. Okay, I'm middle child and that's why I feel like I am Gen Z But I recognize true cusp. I recognize that millennials are like the people who invented me You know, I mean, didn't you watch like so much of YouTube of millennials and it's like well part of my personality is Grace Helberg like I Wasn't a YouTube. Oh really? Which is not yeah, it doesn't make sense for my character, but I wasn't really on line Where you were just outside on a scooter? Not at all. Okay. I was in front of the TV. Okay. You're like a Disney Channel girl. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Do you watch the Hannah Montana? I read I did I did I haven't seen it. Yeah It was good. Okay. I wanted more like Actual Hannah Montana stuff than interviewing. It was Alex. It was mostly yeah, it was like mostly a call her daddy interview Okay, with just like a few Hannah I'm glad that's been so much promo for our caller daddy Yeah, I like lawns when they talk. I don't deny that Right and that's part of the reason you're watching the show right now. No I am like Miranda should just go get laid. Why is she being so mean to everybody? I thought she was gonna end up with the contractor. I for like that's where I thought it was going married. You're nuts Yeah, it's a game the gamification of sexualization Right, I didn't realize cat calling was a game like there was no actual no there's dates involved It was for the love of the game for these guys. It's one month three maybe boy friends and a million reasons to panic I'll tell you and that's a big word of cat call. Yeah. Hello. Hello. I do love Miranda being like I got to go back to blockbuster I'm like, I'll run a few at a time. No, they don't let you that's not part of membership. You get you bring one you take one Oh, I wasn't familiar with that you think you can just it's like a store. Yeah, no way. It's a trading policy I thought you could go into you could go into blockbuster. Yes, of course But you don't you have to return though like you can if you want a few it's like a library You know like you can have so many things out, but not so many You know you took it's give and take yes It's nice to build it. I also enjoy that because it's like now you kind of especially in New York It's like always a nice air and to run or something so met her Paul did about like grabbing your CD or your Whatever Tape. Yeah VHS Well, maybe we are Gen Z please see what is the VCR the machine it goes in yeah, yeah, I remember that cuz blues clothes was in there Was in your VCR. Yeah. Oh, good. Please. Clues VHS tapes were orange Which set them a power remember the orange eyes. Yes, I never been like okay. Was that for Nickelodeon I? Don't know what the science behind that. It is Nickelodeon. Yeah, you found a science We got a lot of you got nerd dummy cluster. We don't have a lot of science today. Please please We'll slide me halfway through just call me Bill. No From my viewpoint of like watching this episode where it's like it's so funny for this like a cultish personality of someone Like the hot yoga instructor who's like trying to like subjugate his fellow yogis and decelibacy like that's cult activity I've ever seen it. I've like put my finger to something. I've seen I've read enough a cultish Yeah, I did to know a one-one. I see one. Yeah, and I'm seeing a few signs there You know, I didn't think of it that way, but yeah Wouldn't you he's a charismatic hot man. Yeah, I'm pleased. I follow him anywhere. I feel like a lot of yoga It's can be cultish. Yeah, right? Sometimes when you think about it everything is can be called and please. Yeah Yeah, whenever I listen to that podcast sounds like a cult. I'm like we Everything I do is cold. I know But that's the cost of community. I fear and fine line Yeah, you know, they have to make ten seasons of a podcast Yeah, so you can find a cult in anything. Yeah, that's a beauty. I do love the idea of Samantha being mad at him But like yes, and then keep she's so horny. She keeps going back to the yoga class Not wanting to fuck but then when she goes want to fuck kind of broad city style on English or something She's like want to fuck and he's like no want to fuck and she's like look We're gonna go fuck bitch like how dare you make me sell a bit for a week I mean how much time do you think past? It's Underserning amounts a few days. I like love Samantha so much and I just like love the fact that she like Just couldn't wrap her head around it He was like I'm celibate. She she like couldn't grasp it and she was trying she was like No, like you could see the wheels turn it. Yeah, she couldn't get there. And I just love that about her There are a lot there's so many funny lines in this sequence to or he first reveals his celibacy He goes I've been celibate for three years and he goes Why and more importantly why? I mean if we go back to Charlottes plot line here where Charlotte is So she's in a romantic entanglement with someone that Carrie has dated in the past and Carrie reveals to her that He's a sex maniac and Charlotte is so touched because the sex maniac has not damed a touch her yet this classy Wasp woman and she rewards him by like now being so Sexually like fervorist for him and they get back to the bedroom And he and he's like I can't get it up even if I try girl. I was so jealous of her in a moment honestly To have a selba boyfriend Just like cuddle I was feeling that way too and I do love like it shows that like women are horny too and like We just want to be respected like when Charlotte felt like she was respected was like she was like all right I'm ready to be my horny self It's beautiful and that's like all it takes. I do think this guy was horrible Yeah, because clearly Charlotte was like really wanting that connection and he was like I don't care. Yeah, which I mean that is pros at coded I guess But I'm like, okay, so you also refuse to have a personality That's what like it's totally fine to be affected by the pro-zac in that way and totally understandable But I he wasn't willing to like meet her needs in any way. I don't think it was Hashtag radical when she was like well if that's if you're gonna be this way I have to go. Yeah, I'm like I feel like most girls. I know I'd be like, okay. No worries. Yeah, so for sure Let's be like I can't not even give right he like you care about her pleasure at all Also the idea that her jerking him off and him being like nope still nope nope is crazy It's dropping his thing is polling taffy It's a metaphor you can like you really can feel that one and those moments are like yeah, this was written by a gay guy Polling tax, which of course made me think of the laughing taffy polar that Mike TV goes through and Charlie and the chocolate factory of course It's all coming back to that. No, it's a real theme for you today. Yeah, it always does I remember in college my best friend was dating a guy and then he like he like in our friend group refreshing You're like like a wait office. So he's like so he can't get hard at all and all of us were like I mean he like would go down in him all the time. He's like this is the luckiest man alive. Yeah It's just so happy because he was just give to him all day. That's really sweet like no pressure. Yeah, beautiful That's amazing, but ultimately did not work out right like that's something that I would be like this is awesome at first and then Would be tricky down the line. It gets turkey. Yeah, but It's but then you find out it's like actually it's all about communication That's really it is like every episode of sex in the city is like so this is a communication issue again. Yeah, like every episode It's I know there was a misunderstanding. Oh god, please. I'm learning like because I read a lot of romance as well And like it's all there's always a miscommunication trope in every book and it's like just talk just talk Please I'm begging you when everything would be solved. And then I was like, when I write a book, there will be no miscommunication. - You're like, it's actually impossible. - Oh, it's hard to be so-- - There has to be, like, or else the book ends at page 50. - Right. - You need conflict. And like, there's always gonna be like a little bit of miscommunication involved. - Well, how are you building, like, with miscommunication, how are you building stakes for your protagonist? - Phoebe, like, and her anxiety, she's, has, like, definitely deep-rooted shame about it. And so she lies a lot to kind of cover up how she's feeling. And so that kind of gets her into the miscommunication place, 'cause she's just not being honest. - Right. - Yeah. - And so many girls are like-- - I lie a lot as well. Like, I'll, like, make excuses that are just completely like, like, if I don't wanna go somewhere, 'cause I'm anxious, it's like, I can't go, because my, like, grandpa's sick. And then it's like, I'll get myself into trouble, 'cause it's, like, how's your grandpa? And I'm like, why did he, what? - Right. - So it's like that feeling of, like, just saying anything else, besides, I'm anxious, you know? - Yeah, it's totally, it's, how does he find yourself inside the lies? - You'll see. - Okay, yes, it's a good deal. - It's a song song song song. - It is true, like, even if we look, a guy and I carry his character, we're biggest, like, kind of, rolling around for the emotional truth. Like, there's a whole paper view scene, where, Carrie comes over to her apartment and discreet that he can't say no to her to have sex in. - That's her hips. - Because of her hips, I'll allow. - We all remember that. - I was wearing hips in the right way. - I almost said yes, and that wasn't being asked, you know? That was all the way over here. - The idea of a big being obsessed with watching pay-per-view boxing, it was interesting. - It felt an inconsistent with his character. - Yeah, how did you feel watching that scene? - It's always hard for me to watch, Carrie, when she does that, yeah. - It is really, really, really hard for me to watch that sort of self-destruction is what I would call it. - It just, it went a little too long where I'm, like, Carrie clearly-- - Like, read his body language, yeah. - But then I'm also, like, big hello, both of them, like-- - Both of them. - Y'all are being crazy. - I think the thing with both of them and why I actually love them together is that they're both so selfish, and they're both just thinking about themselves, and so, like, Carrie wasn't reading him. He wasn't reading her. They're just trying to meet their own needs in that moment. - Wait, he froze her over. - I would have been, like, if someone spoke to me like that, what did he say? He was, like, get the fuck off or something? - Carrie, enough. - Enough. - And I'm just, like, the way I hurt my feelings, and just, like, when you're, like, being vulnerable and, like, making a move on someone, especially as a woman, and, like, I do think Carrie's a little bit different in this case, but, like, that would be a really hard rejection. - Yeah, I mean, like, a theme of this episode is, like, the proposition of sex from women, and I think they're, like, the real top-- - Female, yeah. - Horniness. - Female-worniness. - We're, like, even, like, the proposition. - Yeah. - Well, it's, like, yes, we have horniness, but women don't aren't always the ones who act on it, and, like, them being so, like, emotionally forward, and also, the procureurs are, like, wine to have sex, as well, like, even in the ones, and it's also interesting, 'cause the lens of it, like, I perceive it where, like, Miranda's being harassed by the construction worker, and I'm using her harass, 'cause that's what it felt like. - Yeah. - But then when Samantha is, like, constantly berating this man who tells her that he's celibate to have sex with her, it's, like, an endearing trope of, like, the woman who, like, needs to have sex, and it's completely, like, written in a different way, because of just, like, the nature of, like, how men and women, like, in our culture, have, like, been set up the proposition themselves for sex, and, like, also, circumstantially, like, put themselves in the position of power, like, asking someone for sex is a position of power, but when a woman does it, it's, of course, it's empowering when a man does it, it's condescending, like, enforces, like, years of the patriarchy. - I love that, because I, personally, will always get some straight guy, like, commenting on something I say, and be like, can you imagine if a man said that, or if a man did that, 'cause I'm always, like, lusting, and, like, I love having crushes, and I'm just always talking about that, and people are like, imagine if, like, a boy was the subsist, or, like, whatever, and I'm always getting that, and I was thinking that a straight man would comment on Samantha's behavior, and be like, can you imagine if a man did this? And the whole point is, like, she's not a man. - Yeah. - Like, she doesn't have a history of abusing her power. Like, it's different, and I think that this shows that. - Well, it's also, like, the nature of sex itself. - Yes, there's that. - Where it's, like, well, women are-- - Powered by a man. - Yeah, they're, like, they're the receivers of sex. So, it's, it's a complete, like, men give women receive as not, I mean, that's not always the case, but, like, how it's traditionally set up. And, like, because of that, like, women have to give something of themselves, and the situation of men receive something in the situation, essentially. And then, the whole show is, like, the reverse of that dynamic, potentially. - I do think it's fun that this episode, it feels like, like, oh, Carrie should be so embarrassed she's throwing herself at me. - Right. - But there is something radical about, like, all four of these women being, like, I wanna fuck you. And, like, that not really ever being something that happens on TV up into this point. So, even though I'm watching it mad, I'm, like, girl, you can fart. Like, we can't be here right now. But then, it's, like, okay, well, for the time, it's actually, they're being really brave. - I think even now. - Even now. - I don't think you see disillicitation of sex from women that much on TV. I mean, I don't. And then, when it is, like, it's still, even though it, like, actually, probably is happening, I thought it still feels novel to me, just 'cause it's, like, not the traditional stance. - Yeah. - You know, do you ever solicit? - No, I'm really shy and terrified of rejection. (laughing) - So, the way they get rejected every episode, and it's no problem. - And it's no problem at all. I would take years. - I think everybody, I just feel like, Gen Z people in general, the idea of, like, one rejection is so scary and painful that it's, like, avoided at all costs. At the cost of a lot. - No, literally. - Like, that's why we don't leave the home. - Yeah. - Oh my god. - It's just, like, watching the show and seeing everybody out of the house and, like, mingling is always just, like, this feels like a different era, and it was, but, like, it's very clearly, like, no one's on their phones. People are out meeting people, and it's, like, I wish. - How do you feel when you, like, have you, when your proposition, or, like, asked out, do you, how do you feel, like, rejecting others? - I have a really, really hard time. I was just in the position for the first time, where I wasn't interested in someone was, and I always thought I would be able to handle it, but I actually was realizing I prefer being the one that, on the other side, because I was like, to make someone feel the way that I felt for so, like, so many times, feels impossible right now. Like, I cannot do this, like, I can't take on this evil. - I can't, so, and that was, like, really, really, really, really hard time. - What did you really say? - I didn't, I said a whole lot of nothing. - Perfect. - That's paragraphs of just, like, I don't know, I don't know, and I did know. (laughing) So, I think it's hard. - Can you explain that situation a bit more? - If you feel control, no worries at all. - It really was, like, a knot is, I'm, like, making something out of nothing. It wasn't a thing, but just this guy liked me, and we had another date planned, and I was, like, I know that I'm not interested, and I don't want to waste anymore of his time, but we had it, and I was, like, stressing about it for days, and then, on the day at the date, I was like, I can't do this, and so I sent him a text. It was like, I just want to let you know, like, I'm really unsure about how I'm feeling, and I don't think I'm in a place to, just, like, rambling. I don't think I'm in the right headspace. I don't think I'm in a place to date. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and I was like, we can still hang out if you want, but I just don't think I see things going anywhere, and he said he still won't hang out. - Perfect, perfect, perfect. - It was like, okay. - Was it those balls? - Did you want that response? - No, that was, I didn't even think that was an option. - Oh, really? - Yeah. - Right, 'cause if I just said that-- - 'Cause if I got that in, I'd be like, it's a-- - Yeah, well, this is my thing is, like, I recently went on, like, a bunch of hinge dates, all of them are flops, no worries at all, but the idea of, like, girls always talking about, like, I'm getting mixed signals from this guy. I'm like, oh, I'm the mixed signal queen, like, because I'm like, oh, I don't want to be rude and make them feel bad. So I'm just, like, being vague or being, like, not pinning anything down. And then I'm like, oh, like, am I supposed to just say, no, bye, forever? Like, that seems illegal. - I think, like, being in this position for the first time ever, I'm like, oh, there's no such thing as a mixed signal, if it's a mixed signal to know. - Yeah. - 'Cause, like, when I was, like, I don't know, I did. You know, when it's like-- - Yeah, that's what I, yeah, like, the mixed signal is a no. - Right, and I, like, wasn't texting back fast. - Yeah. - 'Cause I didn't, like, you know, it's just like, okay, I totally get it now. Like, there's nothing to analyze. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Well, I'm like, our animation is complicated and confusing and often mixed. Like, I think a mixed signal is because there are mixed feelings. 'Cause I feel like sometimes the weight of, like, going on another date with someone is also, like, weighted against the circumstances of your life at that moment. So, like, if you're stressed by your everyday goings and then having, like, a date, you potentially have to add to your life as well. And other circumstances when you're much more emotionally free, you might take that date on just even for the, like, the experiential part of it. But other times you're like it's my life in a clear up to the point that I could take another date on as well I mean, I'm just I'm sending mixed signals when I am afraid to see them again. I mean, I yeah Different but it definitely did give me some perspective. Yeah, it made me be like way and never it was that complicated Yeah, I do believe That if he wanted to he would is is real Yeah, the whole episode is kind of like the summary. It's like if she wanted to she would well the thing about Carrie is she should be like I'm feeling anxious that we're not having sex can we have sex but instead she has to freak out alone Pain her apartment. I love and big comes over and is like thanks for inviting me and she's like I didn't it It's like okay. What is going on between you? the drama But it's still but like aren't the other characters kind of playing at the fantasy of like what it what it looks like for a woman to ask for sex Like if he wanted to he would but I also think the other side of it's like Also, I think the overlying message of this show in general is like the Liberalization of female sexuality Just to close out the episode so this scene where they're all like looking through the window before we had ugly naked guy We had the hot couple fucking so true. Oh my god Have you ever seen through a window people hooking up? No, I have it. Oh my god I've heard it upstate like above me. I've heard it in the other in the hotel room next to us above and next to me But I've never seen and I actually don't like I don't like that like I feel really like Yeah, like it feels violated it feels illegal for like like I'm breaking the law and there Yes, it feels it doesn't feel like it would not turn me on the way that it turned them on like I know I don't think I would look Yeah, the way they're watching like so kind of scientifically. Yeah, it's like okay. Yeah, I can appreciate watching scientifically But like what do we think going on with the man that he can be hard that long? Is it a blue-choose situation? It's a blue-choose situation girl Did they did they have the science for that back then of course girl? Wow, they've really solved all of men's problems It's only this whole episode about the decades ago abusive pills for men We're gonna look at it. Oh, yeah, yeah, I love when they say the acronym SSRI they're all the words. I'm like, okay, yes What is it? serotonin selective selective serotonin rehabilitation and So we nailed it. We're getting nods from the studio audience very good That's good. I like and doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. It like it feels true to us 100 I am just like the idea that Miranda and Carrie were hanging out there Like we got to get out of our girls involved in this. I'm like, this is so fun. That's why you would have got that okay knowing you for 45 minutes now I'm like it's giving Charlotte. Okay. I love that. Your hair looks gorgeous like hers That's very sweet. I feel like I was having a bad hair day, but thank you so much. The way you're bang Well, not bangs, but like the framing pieces. I really appreciate you noticing my face frames. It seemed really good Thank you, Charlotte. I think I am a hopeless romantic love and Also kind of more reserved about sex, but also horny and yeah, just like kind of a loving prude. That's beautiful Yeah, a loving prude. Yeah, would you say your shows and girls too? I would. Yeah. I would, but I also think a little Hannah Okay, yeah, cuz writer. Yeah, I think but not a carry. I think ah, you know what? Like I really struggle with carry But sometimes I wonder if it's because I see myself and at the parts that I don't like Yeah, yeah, maybe you'll look back when you're 40 and be like it was just cuz it was Exactly, I want you to wonder sometimes You gotta stay curious, please. Yeah, I actually and curious to hear you call yourself a charlotte too because have you noticed any Like cultural trends around like either the shift of charlotte's character itself or just like the more people are identifying with her in general. I think that we went through an amazing era of like Samantha of like sexually like empowered women Which is amazing, but I think there are a lot of people who are like more reserved and like shy and like hopeless romantic and I think that We're kind of having our time now. I do believe that to be true. Yeah I also think like the 2010s like feminism where it was just like well women can be like sexually free to the point where it's like Oh, like all these women if they're not identifying with that. They're like, okay, well then I'm out of the game right completely So the charlotte characters like so like okay, I'm I exist right. Yeah, I can be horny and approved Yeah, cuz it's a real the real lens that people say that charlotte like is growing in popular because of the rise of conservatism In the country, and like, okay, I don't think it's wrong. Okay, because I mean also a big part of it is that like liberal culture Often borrows from conservative culture and conservative culture borrows from liberal culture all the time It's like why people in Bushwick are wearing camo and Christopher people are driving electric cars now You know what I mean? Where it's like everything. It's always borrowing from mother. It's all about branding That's why people say charlotte is growing in popularity though as a characters because people are becoming like more solid bit more Homebound more like sexually prude, but it's all I don't think it's a bad thing I think like there's so much nuance to it and you're trying to true classic doesn't matter why you're a charlotte You've always been maybe. Thank you. I kind of love reclaiming charlotte as a liberal. Yeah Yeah, the liberalization of charlotte is important now more than upper We're with earlier you this week. I really do feel like I am Miranda because girl I'll get the point if someone says something I will say something back Oh, I love I do love Miranda. Oh, well. How can you know? Yeah, I really do. Please She is fierce as hell. She looks amazing and navy. I don't feel so far from that myself Her overalls were cute as hell. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, she is good and as I like get older, I like the Prociousness like if someone says something to me like I just love giving it back And it's javani of it. Yeah, she's just like giving it back to his own like cultural language Like a specific read is all I want in this world So I'm like trying to emulate a Miranda at least in this situation I love that. Yeah, you gotta yeah, you do I mean, what are you girl? What girl are you this week? I am Kevin the guy on pro-sac I love that somebody on a pro-sac will be you train combo I've never felt more represented in the media than him being like sorry I feel chill. I haven't felt down in months because it is like I feel so neutral every day It's awesome. Wow, it is so awesome and thank you for bringing up the well-beautoned combo I do you know about it. I'm on it. Oh my god. Absolutely. Absolutely. Don't you think it's people are like oh Should I do both because they're just on pro-sac? And I'm like yeah, the well-beautoned did a secret third thing I don't know what exactly it was but I really made the sauce magic. Well-beautoned is my favorite pill It just feels good. I'm not going to break them. Yeah, and apple. You know like Tylenol. No, I'm an apple girl I think that I don't like Tylenol, but like I feel like you're one or the other. I know that girl. I think it's like a family traditional style It's like what you're born and do yeah, I'm like I am Adderall my dad's I didn't Tylenol my mom's side But we've made it work. My dad's side definitely had I be profan and my mom always had Tylenol. Whoa. Whoa the power the power - No wonder they couldn't stay together. - Okay, and in our last segment, oh. Why can't Amelia's parents stay together? No. - We talk about this every episode. No, lastly, it's time to get carried away. - Well, don't be a bitch. - I'm not being a bitch, I'm just being myself. - So this is where you deliver like a hot take from either this episode, pop culture at large that like feels thematic to what we've talked about here. Or just like something that's been brewing on your mind, honestly, and we're happy to go first. - Yeah, how about you guys go first? - Yeah. - What I'm getting carried away about this week is the idea of Miranda not having access to the app grinder. Our girl is so frustrated. It sounds like she's ready to like fuck the sidewalk. So I'm like, if we had some sort of situation for her where she could just call a guy up, get him in there, why don't we do that? I mean, it does like, I know we talked a lot about it in this episode, oh my God, it must have been so nice to call your friends to just be so in the moment, so present. But it sucks that Miranda doesn't have an app 'cause if she could just go on Tinder really quick, it really would have solved her whole plot. - Really what? I mean, there is an episode where she tries to go on a three-way from a newspaper. - Right, yes, that was fine. - I think she's more than Samantha. - She is, but she just doesn't, I feel like she isn't playing the game. - She's one of 'cause she can't have sex. I mean, we're seeing her on month four. I'm sure month one would have a different story. - Her being like, I'm getting carpal tunnel. Girl, go buy a rabbit. What are you getting carried away about this, you guys? - So in this episode, Miranda's returning a five-hour documentary about the Nuremberg Trials to Blockbuster, and I guess what's a Dunshaw people interview where she goes like half Nuremberg defense with it, where she goes, people are telling me to do it, but I also owned a small business. So like, I guess I kind of knew what I was doing, but it's also my co-conspirator to mostly like, send me up for it. I'm like, she should have gone full Nuremberg with that. I mean, she should have brought that to the courts also. She should have said there's like a secret third party that's kind of orienting all her actions. She should have said Elizabeth Holmes had to hand a play with it. - It's Norma, girl, what is it? - Norma, girl, Nuremberg. - Nuremberg. - Nuremberg Trials were-- - I didn't want to ask. Thank you so much. - Nuremberg. - It's the famous trial where the Nazis said that they were just following commands. - Yes, I remember that. - So the whole thing is, so yeah. So she's like-- - Oh, like, if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off bridge? - They're like, we're not guilty. - We're not guilty. - It's like not our fault, because we're telling us to kill six million Jews. - Okay, yeah, okay, yeah. - It's not great. But my whole thing is that like, Jen Shaw should have just gone full with Nuremberg. - So Jen Shaw, somebody was telling her to abuse the elderly. - Exactly. - God. - But she only alluded to, there was like a secret entity telling her to do that. But she wouldn't like give names. And then, and it's also just like, well, your name's on the LLC girl. I'm like, what the hell are you talking about? You don't get the Jen Shaw squad for no reason. - Well, girl, what would you like to get carried away with today? - I will get carried away by big placing the whoopee cushion on the chair. And I, this might be a hot take. I'm really curious to see what you think. I think that is exactly how I would want the situation handled. - Really? - Yeah. - That was funny. - I think that was a perfect way to make light of it and break the tension and just move on. 'Cause they had a good laugh. And I think it could have ended there. - Right. Yeah. - I thought it was funny. Yeah, I think like if I was in carry shoes, that's what I would want my man to do. - All season one, I actually like really doing, I try to hate bag, and it's in my heart I want to. But season one, when carry acts so ridiculous at any point, like you don't wanna blame the woman, but I'm like, well, you know what, big, exactly. - Sometimes you can. - Yeah. - Bigs have an indigestion after a nice, hardy meal, and he has one of his sex afterwards and carry takes it so damn personally. And so they're just saying what the hell's on her mind? - Yeah. - And then he actually doesn't want to have sex with her. And he shows up after like actually picking up enough signals that he wants to have sex and they like, he just should be all fucking in. And then he makes another joke, lightens his attitude. - Yeah. - So he keeps having to do all this heavy lifting. - Yeah. - And then guess what, she's gonna be back on her shit next episode. - Yeah. - Hey, it's hard to watch. - It can be. - I will say when he placed the weekushan and like this episode, I don't remember this at all, I was like, oh, she's about to freak out. - That's what I thought too. - And then she was like, (laughs) and I was like, thank God, I needed you to laugh, girl. - And she's doing a full, cool girl, you know? And when you do a full, cool girl. - You think it was a forced laugh? 'Cause she's like, I wanna play it cool. - It's like, how can you even discern when the cool girl falls into such a persona and character? - And she was like, I'm doing, I'm not myself. I'm being a version of Carrie that like, - Yeah. - Yeah, so maybe it was cool girl. - I think it literally was a cool girl. - She killed that. She did a really good job. - Yeah, she did. - 'Cause I was like, proud of you, girl. I thought you were gonna freak the hell out. - Well, thank you so much for being on the part today. - Thank you so much for having me. - When does the book come out? - The book comes out May 26th. Oh, my God, that's so soon. - Oh my God. - So soon. - Are you freaking out? - I actually feel really good and I'm hoping it stays that way. 'Cause I am subject to really quick emotional changes. - Oh, perfect. - So I'm really hoping that I feel good for until then. - I know. - I know how long after. - We wish you feeling good now and after. - Thank you so much. - Come on. - Yeah. - Where can people find out? Where can people find you? - You can find the book anywhere that you get books. (laughing) I narrated the audiobook if that's something that interests you as well. Wherever you can get audiobooks. And you can find me. I have a podcast too. It's called "Broken Connor Make a Podcast." - Yeah. - Well, thanks for joining us. - Thank you for having me. - Thanks for listening. And y'all, we'll see you next week. - Bye.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:
