Session 151: Sam Nivola

The conversation begins with a personal reflection on the stress and emotional strain of recent weeks, including a chaotic apartment life and strained relationships with friends Will and Cassidy. The speaker expresses frustration over distance and a sense of being overlooked despite being emotionally central to their group. They share a humorous and candid moment reflecting on their messy living situation, joking about their inability to clean due to overwhelming clutter. The discussion shifts to a celebration of Sam Nivola’s new Hulu series *Phony*, with the speaker praising its strong performances, creative storytelling, and emotional authenticity. Sam highlights how the show’s success stems from sincere, character-driven acting—especially when portraying complex emotions like fear and deception—rather than over-preparation. The conversation expands into broader cultural topics, including film preferences like *Rick and Morty* and *BoJack Horseman*, a deep dive into the history of ancient Rome, and modern political parallels. Personal anecdotes about travel, nightlife, and social habits are interwoven with philosophical musings on authenticity, consumerism, and the appeal of creative risk. The tone remains warm, reflective, and intellectually curious, blending personal vulnerability with cultural commentary. The speaker ends by expressing excitement for future content, including a new music single and a desire for deeper engagement with fans through social media. Overall, the exchange is a heartfelt mix of self-awareness, emotional honesty, and admiration for both art and human connection.

please welcome sam nivola thank you guys thank you it's so good thanks jake it's so good it bugs me out that show i know it's pretty creepy you're always drowning in water i'm always drowning in water i'm always drowning in water it's always a nightmare i know what's what's up with that i i don't know i have a sort of fear of what i have a fear of boats that you're close yeah so you i have you have to face all your fears during filming i have to face all my fears during filming you have a fear of boats i have a fear of boats i have a fear of acting do you act like what do you mean i kind of do i get stage fright i but boats is the main thing boats i because i get we've had this conversation i get claustrophobic and being on a boat is like you're literally stuck suck there's no way out i would argue a plane is worse a plane is and i also get it really bad on planes but on planes at least i'm like there's something about the complete release of control of like if this plane crashes yeah it's like what am i supposed to do what am i gonna do what am i gonna do i'm gonna put on a 90 minute cut of avatar is what i'm gonna do of what avatar oh i haven't seen that i haven't seen the latest well i haven't seen the latest i haven't seen the latest either but i mean the original oh like the last airbender no blue people oh that one also the last airbender last ever is awesome i watch a fair amount of like animated like i love family guy i love family guy i love um you like rick and morty i love rick and morty so tell me about rick and morty because my mom loves rick and morty okay i love that your mom loves she's like it's the best show ever where's your mom from new york new york is one of them depressed or am i thinking of one of them's depressed rick is like a crazy depressive alcoholic and he's it's It's like a fucked up abusive relationship that he has with his grandson and he forces him to do all these like weird adventures with him. But the characters are so well thought out and the story structure I love because it's not like Family Guy where Family Guy is great, but Family Guy is just straight funny. It's just straight funny. Yeah, it's awesome. But the thing about Family Guy is that it's it's every episode is a different thing. Like you can drop in and watch any episode. You can't do that with Rick and Morty. You can, but the thing is that like three out of every 10 episodes is tied into some storyline that's going through it. So like some of the episodes are just bottle episode adventures and then occasionally it'll catch on to the wave of the plot of the show. And I think that's kind of brilliant because you get the best of both worlds. You know what? As you were talking to me about that, it's not Rick and Morty that my mom likes. It's BoJack Horseman. BoJack Horseman is also great. And he's also depressed. He's also depressed. And that's great. You would love that. It's such like inside baseball about the film industry and really being in L.A. OK, it's about like a failed actor or no, it's about like an old sitcom, right? And he's a horse and he's a horse. Yeah, which is totally unrelated. OK, well, tell me about phony. Um, OK, let me tell you about phony. What do you want to know? I mean, OK, so you've seen the first four episodes and you need to send me the remainder. I'm going to try and get you links to the rest of it. I I yeah, so I. Basically, I auditioned for this show. That was going to be my first question. Was it offer or was it audition? It was definitely audition. It was it. I auditioned. This all kind of came into play like the week before the White Lotus came out. So wow. So that long ago. Yeah. A long time ago because it was a pilot. OK. And they did the whole pilot thing, which from what I've heard, I mean, I'm very young and haven't worked for enough years to know what it was like in the past. But apparently they don't do that a lot anymore. They don't. Which. It used to be a thing. They did it with Glee. Yeah. That's my most famous example that I know. Because you write a lot and have been pitching. Didn't you just sell a show? I did just sell a show. Come on. Let's go. Thank you. That's freaking awesome. Then it took like a fair few months for them to for them to decide to pick it up. And it wound up working out totally fine. But, you know, the way obviously the way the TV industry works is like there's every month there's a new thing that's like, oh, everyone's buying 30 minute comedies or everyone's buying hour long dramas. It's about miserable people or whatever. And it's I feel like sometimes if you make the pilot and then wait a year, whatever the hot trend is that you were trying to catch on to can disappear. Well, that's why you can't make stuff based on trends. Exactly. You have to. I completely agree. You have to make stuff based on what you want. What you want to make. Yeah. Yeah. So what was it like working with Connie Britton? It was fucking awesome. She was so good. She I mean, she, of course, like she has done not only has just done so much. Acting, obviously, but specifically has done so much TV and like White Lotus and White Lotus and Friday Night Lights. You watch Friday Night Lights. Fucking love. It's literally the best. My mom watched it. My dad watched Friday Night Lights. It's the best. Right. It's just a really good like depiction of like just like normal life. And they make it and all the characters. And it started so many careers. Like if you think about like it was like Jesse Plemons, Michael B. Jordan. Taylor Kisich. Yeah. Minka Kelly. God, it's all of them. It's all of them. But yeah, she's amazing. And she's and she just has so many hours on sets like she's whatever they say about being a genius is you. Ten thousand hours. Ten thousand hours. She's got her ten thousand hours. And it was just so amazing to kind of learn from her and to finally feel like I could really like because it's my first real proper lead role. At least in TV. Yeah. And and I mean, co-lead with her. But like it was the first. I feel like sometimes when I'm a smaller role, I don't feel like I even am allowed to be sort of picking people's brains, asking questions, like having deep, creative conversations with people because I'm like, oh, I'm just like, I'm happy to be here. I'm just happy to be here. Yeah. Yeah. And for the first time, I was like, oh, I now I like kind of have the balls to be like, OK, Connie, like tell me what your process is and like tell me about how you do things and like. Let's talk about this scene together. And it was almost always just her telling me what's what and me being like, yeah, that's that sounds like a great plan. And but it was great because like I learned so fucking much. Was there any advice that really stuck with you that she gave you? I mean, the thing that I thought was the coolest of the way that she handled it is that the her. She had to be playing two things at once because the whole thing is that she's. An imposter. An imposter. And they do a really good job making her look like one. They do an amazing job making her look like one. However, on set on the day, she didn't have anything on her face because it's a bunch of VFX artists that do this thing. And I don't know a lot about how it works, but all I know is that it was the same person and her performance was so different in these two versions of herself that it really made it easy to tell. The difference between them, like she because the whole thing is like, oh, is she an imposter or is she someone whose kid just went through a really traumatic car accident and she's rattled and she like it's totally fucked her up because she's terrified by the by the situation and you could really feel the difference between those two things. And even in the scenes, I guess this is a roundabout way of saying the scenes where she was supposed to be coming off as kind of creepy, where like the writing was like, you know, she's like, I don't know. Oh, you know, she sort of is putting ointment on his skin and it's like this kind of creepy thing if she's touching him and whatever. And she she would play it so sincerely, like just like a mother who loves her son. And in a way, that was so much more creepy. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, because you know, yeah, it was supposed to be the imposter in that scene. Yeah, yeah. And that I thought was so cool of just like you don't like especially with sci fi elements genre stuff, comedy. The best thing to do, at least in her book, which I've now adopted, is to play the sincerity and like always be sincere and just play the character. Not like try to get something. Yeah, don't do don't do the show's work for it. Like if the show is a well-written show, which it is, you don't need to. That's not your job. You know what I mean? Your job is to be the character. Wow. That's good advice. That's good advice. Do you do you know what this reminds me of? Have you ever seen Good Night, Mommy? No, I haven't. I haven't. I've heard a lot of people have comped it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Is it good? I remember it's the only movie I've ever because it was rated R and I was like 14 trying to see it. And I remember, remember seeing Good Night, Mommy on the Upper East Side and I was trying and I had bought tickets to something else because I looked like a child and they wouldn't let me in and they caught me and I never got to see it. Fuck. I know. That sucks. I know. I never got to see it. But I remember that being such an important part of childhood, like trying to sneak into R-rated movies and it feeling really like rebellious, more thrilling than like trying to get a beer when you're under 21. Oh, way more thrilling because restaurants in New York will serve you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it was it was like it was like this makes or breaks the night. Either I'm going home or I'm going to see an awesome, scary movie. Do you like going to the movies? I love going to movies. That's all I do. What was the last movie you saw? The last movie I saw, I'm going to sound like the most pretentious person on the planet. Last movie I saw was a 1928, I believe, Ukrainian silent film called Earth. You went out of your way to. Yes, but it was awesome. Good for you. Good for you. Thank you. No, honestly, so smart. That's how I feel when I listen to like music that's above my pay grade. Yeah, that's how I feel when I listen to like Bonnie Bear. A little bit. Part of me was like it was this amazing thing where like the ticket it was at the Metrograph in the Lower East Side. It's really cool. They play old movies and they have like a cool bar. I have issues with old movies. You do? Like real issues. Which, well, how old are we talking? Like the earliest I can go is whatever year Goodfellas was released. That's it. That's fair. That's it. There are a lot of great movies after that. What does a night out look like for you? What does a night out look like for me? We tried to have one together. Too hot. It was so fucking hot, Sam. We were in Paris. It was during that heat wave for those who remember. It was fucked up. You're the only one that actually experienced it with me besides my friend Charlie. It was all Paris. What was it like shooting in Thailand? It was awesome. I mean, it was amazing. It was one of those things that like in hindsight was more amazing than it felt in the moment. Of course. Because not because of anything. I don't mean to sound like a total dick of being like, I don't know, four seasons is just not that nice. No, but this nostalgia is a mind's trick. Nostalgia is a, is a trick. And, and I, yeah, it was just really stressful because I really wanted to do a good job. It was my first like huge, huge thing and I, and everyone did, we were all like, cause it's such a big show that no matter who you are, all these people that I really looked up to were also kind of shitting bricks and like we were all really scared, but, and it was really hot and it was really, really hot. You guys had a pretty. All-star cast, but we had an amazing cast and that made it kind of awesome. Cause it was like, whenever we had time off. off we it was like a big dinner party every night and like going to do fun things going to hang out with elephants and how was the food massages the food was awesome oh so so so good i'm so jealous i've never been to thailand you have to go it's really really awesome you should do a whole tour there were lots of people i didn't actually like have the time or maybe i just like was too wanted to just like chill and do nothing on my weekends but like there were people that would go like sarah catherine went to to vietnam for a weekend while we were there and said it was like the most amazing like they're all so close you can really just go around oh my god it's like europe yeah like europe wow america sucks yeah i know i know we can't get anywhere away from everything everything it's brutal where'd you shoot phony because it looks beautiful we shot it in vancouver where they shoot just about everything and it was awesome that guy whoever whoever plays your little friend is so fucking funny he's so fucking funny i'm gonna get dinner with him tonight he's the coolest guy where you guys going we're going to our showrunner nick's house he's gonna order us some food i get anxious when i go to people's houses for dinner there's no escape yeah there is no escape that's true but i feel like in la there's kind of no escape from anywhere because you got to get in a car if you want to escape yeah that's what i that's why i prefer i i've been preferring new york but i i'm happy to be back in la like i just went on a walk before you got here and i was like the weather in la today is like if i could bottle it up and have it every single day for the rest of the year i would it is amazing although i have to say today is the wrong day to be making that claim why you it's you don't like this it was raining when was it raining it was raining like 20 minutes ago what was it really it doesn't feel like that at all i know it feels nice i like it i'm sick of it it's been a long hot summer and i'm sick of it and i'm ready for some rain i'm ready for some cold i know what was pouring in new york yesterday yeah yeah pouring yeah what were you doing in new york just i had recordings okay and then i said what um the show oh the show the show and then i went out hell yeah where did you go out we did you go to joy face no i love joy face though i love joy face we went to this new place called bc bc it's like a it's like a nightclub and the catch of bc the reason it's so uh good yeah it's because you can smoke cigarettes inside the club so it feels like europe that's like do you remember clandestino uh-uh the place that was above the cipriani i think it's probably socialista or socialista sorry clandestino's the dime square one socialista the same similar name that you can smoke in there really god i've never been in a more crowded club in my entire life than socialista yeah it's also like the vibe is pretty intense it's a it's a lot i feel like the least attractive cool person oh that's there well that's how i felt that's how i feel all the time yeah that's how i feel all the time so i feel right now but we went to this like mexican restaurant for dinner before for drinks before yeah best mango marks i've ever had my entire life oh mango margarita yeah you just said mango mark i've never i've never heard of a mango mark you're lying i'm not lying you've never heard of a mango margarita mango margarita i've so random that's such a random thing to have never heard of i know i feel like i'm so sorry they're delicious do you like margaritas i love margaritas but do they make them out of all kind of fruits yeah they have strawberry margaritas mango margaritas i need watermelon margaritas third eye and get out there and i know i know and we have to see you next game and we have to see you next game i by the way went and watched your episode of adults which is the funniest fucking thing i've ever seen thank you and you're in it the whole time with my friend sophie she was we were talking about you we did a movie together yeah yeah and she said you guys just filmed in a car the entire day all day every day the entire time but you could but this isn't about me this is about you being awesome in that show it was the funniest thing you were awesome actually i heard oh but you're making me feel like such an actor it was so funny like i watched all i was really happy they posted those fucking funny i was really happy they posted those you coming up with your phone being like we're mine you can't arrest us we're minors you know what i was i was actually proud of that one it's really good do you take acting classes or do you no longer no i so i have a i i had a sort of like two years when i started working where i think i was really misguidedly was just like acting is it is it is an instinctual thing and it's just like either you got it or you don't and like i just i clearly have it you know and like it's a very easy thing to feel if you book a job you're just like oh well i'm just like him but then of course i then i was working with people that were much older than me and and like oscar winners and people that i really look up to who all still do acting class and so i was just like right and you're like who am i who the fuck am i and so i started doing i've done i've done a bunch of like classes here and there in new york but i have this i acting coach that i work with named uh anya safir who works with the atlantic theater company but she's like a she's like a shakespeare expert i didn't know that she's so humble about it i know this but she's like one of the world's leading shakespeare scholars and like uses that in her method and so anyway i i like i i meet with her a bunch whenever i whenever i do a job do you ever get worried about over preparing because i remember when i did uh my i was like in uh my first movie yeah and i remember do you know lewis pullman yes he was like just don't over prepare yeah he was like whatever you and he's so good yeah he's so good that i was like okay maybe i'll maybe i'll listen for once and i because he was like don't he was like with comedy you can't go in and read it and like over prepare because like then it's just it becomes awkward do you ever struggle to find that line this is a great question i totally do i think that that is one of those things that i'm like i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know that it's really different depending on the genre like i think if it's comedy you're so right i think if you over prepare i think the best way you can prepare for a comedy is like watching funny movies totally and hanging out with your funniest friend yeah and like getting good sleep and like making sure that you're like ready to be like fast and on but i i think that for for like phony was the thing that i prepared for the most over the course of my life i was meeting with with anya once a like while we were shooting i was meeting with her three times a week before and i really really like had a whole notebook with every scene like what my intentions are in the scene what i'm trying to get out of the other person like classic whatever but did you find that it helped and i found that it was so helpful even if just for the fact that like because i wanted to be prepared because it i'm gonna have no time and i didn't i didn't have any time to to be like normally when you're a small role in something like you spend 10 hours a day sitting around with all the time in the world to think about how you're gonna do the thing and then you do the thing and it's fine and this was like i was it was like back to back to back scene to scene to scene to scene like if i if i didn't have a notebook with all my shit in it i would have drawn so many blanks and i think that it really helps to to at least have a game plan and then you can always mess with it once you get in there you know what i mean but like to to have some idea of what i was doing was just like invaluable are you an improviser on set or are you straight to the line it's like you stick to the lines straight to the lines well it depends straight i don't know i'm straight to the line i'm cosplaying today by the way i'm cosplaying this is not who i am oasis as yes every part of me is not like who i am except i am obsessed as of late i am too they're great they're great you know they're going to oregon although they are the poster children for a soccer team that did some very bad things recently what soccer team called manchester city oh they're manchester united or manchester they're manchester city and they're and and city have just been uh found guilty of all these like financial crimes and i they basically have these rules to try and keep because all these teams are owned by like saudi billionaires and yeah and like really rich like russian oligarchs and they put so much money in that to try and keep it from being unfair we're just like the richest person's team wins they make it so that the amount of money they spend has to be less than or equal to the amount of money that the club makes so like if the club makes a billion dollars a year on like ticket sales shirt uh streaming rights whatever they can't have the owner spend more than a billion dollars to get to get better players yeah totally okay that makes sense and they spent i think a billion dollars more than they should have right yeah those are those are the scariest i know i know i know like you thought nick's fans were intense eagles fans were intense no uk soccer fans are some of the more more intense people have you ever been to a soccer game in italy no those are so crazy because you can drink in the stadiums there you can drink that sounds so fine it's so awesome but they're those rivalries are so deep because it's like it's like rome is playing against naples or whatever rome yeah rome will be play against naples and it's like it's not a rivalry like new york and philly where it's like you know you have you know you have this stock exchange and we have rocky you know it's like it's like it's like your people massacred my people two thousand years ago and i still haven't forgiven you yeah so it's like way more ancient rivalries and the chants are all like about political figures from like thousands of you know what i mean like it's great when did you go to a soccer game in italy well i lived in rome for a while for like almost a year no like i guess between half a year and a year for were you shooting something no i i went there right after i graduated high school i got i sort of took a gap year i had done my first acting gig but i had not gotten another one since then and i was like i i had so much confidence and i was just like i'm just gonna go like i just made some money like i have money i'm gonna go on a trip and just like do something crazy and i went and lived in rome that is crazy it was kind of crazy but it was amazing because i i weirdly have a lot of family there i have a lot of family in sardinia and they must be nice so so nice to live there year round but the sad thing is that there's very few people that are still living in our town i mean there's there's a lot of people living there but but most of the people my age my like cousin age they have all moved to the like big cities because there's no work in these in these little towns anymore like that that family was historically stonemasons and shepherds and like those those aren't jobs that exist anymore so they most of them live in rome but it was great i was just watching a show what was it below on netflix yeah i saw a huge billboard for that it's cool it's interesting so it takes place in newfoundland okay canada canada so like near montreal yeah but like really rural newfoundland okay so like cold freezing okay and like their their line of business there is like collecting these icebergs and then they sell like they go fishing for icebergs and they and then they sell the ice okay they sell the ice to like to like people and like you can take like shots like a vodka with like icebergs that's what i took away from it it's also a horror film about like an evil thing that like wait and it's set in like modern day yeah it's set in modern day trying to get them to relocate again okay because like like so above my head what i took away though is that i was like taking shots at a bar in rural newfoundland sounds out of ice out of ice sounds so fun so cool so i do want to go there now but there also is like a demonic giant squid underneath that's like killing everyone you buried the lead on that one i know what the fuck i know i watched like three episodes last night you know what i just watched i was so good the new carrie adaptation oh i would love to watch that i love carrie i would love never seen the original carrie you've never seen because it was made before uh eight fellas yeah exactly yeah mike flanagan did a great do you like mike flanagan yeah he's the best yeah have you ever seen haunting of hill house yes i love haunting of hill house i think that is genius because it's like i i'm always wondering when i see a horror movie i'm like this is the most traumatic thing that could ever happen to a person what's next yeah where is this person in 10 years like i know probably pretty fucked up well they used to make sequels about it like they did like i don't know you did not last summer again so we got to see them did you ever actually never saw it but did you see the sequel to the shining that they did what like mike flanagan did it yeah it was mike flanagan there you go doctor sleep doctor sleep no i never saw it with the kid from the shining in it wait wait wait wait what's it about it's a is it good it's another stephen king book right yeah yeah it's just the sequel to the shining when the kid grows up he goes back to the hotel i definitely didn't watch it yeah it was in theaters we should watch that let me just say though one thing about covid i called it i i don't know i don't know if i have text from january being like there's a virus in wuhan china and i'm sorry what from january there is a virus and wuhan china it is a very big problem i am telling everybody right now that it is going to come for us in january oh so you had read an article about it or something yeah but no one's taking it seriously i thought for a second you were like i just had a feeling there was something going on in wuhan china can you tell me what's going on in wuhan china can you imagine that would be awesome awesome yeah but i i saw an article about it and contagion is one of my favorite movies of all time crazy movie so i know i'm like okay well a virus in order to become a pandemic has to have a really successful kill to contagion ratio so like you can't die like you can't more people can't die from it that can give it to you so like ebola has a too high of a right ratio it kills off the host before they can have amazing skin do i yeah like amazing skin what's your skin routine stop that's so nice sorry i got tired of talking about covid that's totally fair i would so much i went my porcelain baby beautiful you do have no your skin's insane what do you what do you do to it i don't well okay to be honest i i've had pretty pretty bad skin over the course of my life i went i went on accutane that's it no but this is but it's not it jake because i i went on accutane for like two months and i had to stop because it was like making me have you ever been on no it was it like it's so terrible for you it just dries your whole body out you have to drink gallons and gallons of water i would go to the gym and like run on the treadmill for five minutes and feel like i was about to pass out i couldn't like do any physical activity it it was the worst and i couldn't and you can't drink which sucks yeah which is so bad i know it's so bad you said something you said hangovers take you out for a week as well yeah i get pretty fucked by hangovers are you jewish i am a quarter jewish that's why it's just i was talking to troy savant about it you're half jewish i'm full full jewish oh yeah hell yeah i'm full so it takes me out for the whole week like louise and i will have the same exact type of night yeah and she'll be fine the next day and i the guilt i don't know what it's i feel so guilty yeah for like doing what i did to my body yeah i know what you mean but it's an interesting thing like it really made i've recently started to have the philosophy of like okay like it's the thing of like being a true kid and being like getting drunk for the sake of getting drunk is just like fun has kind of worn off from it like it's a little bit more of a like i need to like i need to make sure that i am while drinking having the most fun night ever agree the novelty has worn off and now it's like okay how can i like like if you wake up and you've had like awesome like i had a night the other night with my friends where we went to we went to joy face or we started at raise that bar raise raise is great nicholas brano's race great great spot played a little pool i think i can't i can't remember yeah um we went to joy phase until like three or something and then went to sing sing the karaoke place kept going it was we're going out next week it was an incredible night and then i woke up the next morning and i was like i want to die i'm not i'm not gonna feel good for three days but it was totally worth it it was a great time i had a really good time the other night so it's worth it and i had the afters at my place oh come on that's the best you guys then everyone has to make their time i go to the afters yeah i mean that's like one time i lost my job for the afters i was like i believe that but you know what's something about our generation yeah is that actually like we drink so much less than the previous generation yeah i've been reading articles about this i i um i think it's kind of terrible honestly that we don't drink as much i saw a tiktok that was like what did like millennia like how did we get home before uber and all the comments were like we used to just like wake up random places that's if i woke up in a random place like that one week that would take me out for like months i know i know we need to give ourselves we've gone soft man we have to give ourselves a little more edge i totally agree i think i think it's like tied in i mean at least the thing that i was reading the other day was saying that it's like really tied in with the like health movement of like so much of advertising and the products that are in the world specifically in la but also new york like are about wellness you know and the whole thing is like drinking of course it's terrible for you it's poison it's poisoning your body it's a latin word for poison it's apparently yeah yeah it's really it's really bad but it also like is i think worth poisoning yourself a little bit once a week to like to to meet someone new and kiss that girl that you like and like you know have the whole i agree you know what i mean i've been drinking wine lately and i was never a wine yeah and i've been going out to dinner and i'm like you know a glass of wine sounds nice yeah wine's awesome what's your favorite wine riesling riesling that's a white it's a white and it's like sweet no it's french it's really sweet and it's crisp it tastes like it tastes like a sour apple i'm not on the sweet i'm not on the sweet wave for i know because you're an adult no no no it's not It's because I, it's because my, my family, I have a lot of Italian family and a lot, most of the Italian wine, I mainly drink red wine, but most of the Italian wine is very dry. Red wine is great. Yeah. What are you listening to right now? Um, what am I listening to right now? I'm listening to, I've been, so I've been writing this movie for a long time that I've been trying to get made that is hopefully after I do my next job, we will make it. But I've been listening to a lot of like fifties music and like blues music because that's what we want to be the soundtrack. But I also, I mean, more relevantly, I feel like to maybe your audience is, I'll tell you who I'm listening to. Yeah. You tell me who you're listening to. Do you listen to Cameron Winter? Yes. Okay. So I only, I'm just going to keep it very real. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Keep it real. He, he, I, I, I know his music is like objectively good. First of all, did you know that Paul Thomas Anderson just did his concert movie? Yes. At Carnegie Hall. So cool. Crazy. Apparently it's amazing. Dude, it was so cool. People love Cameron Winter so much that not only did Paul Thomas Anderson shoot it on a IMAX camera, I'm pretty sure, Benny Safdie was pulling focus for him just so he could be there. Isn't that crazy? What does pulling focus mean? Like he was like the guy that was like. Or, you know, the AC, the guy with the, doing the focus thing. Oh, wow. At least I think. I saw a picture of him doing that. I thought, I don't know. But it was good. It was, it was, they just put out the album for it. Yeah, yeah. But he has one of those voices that's like, I'm not, I feel like I'm never going to hear another voice like that ever again in my entire life, which is how I feel about Amy Winehouse. Incredibly original. Totally. You know? Yeah. I love those guys. I mean, I, so I went to high school to the closest high school to. Cameron. Cameron. To Cameron and all those guys. Yeah. The drummer, Max Besson was a, was kind of a friend of mine in high school. I mean, I like, he was really good friends with my best friend and I remember seeing them around at parties and they were always so cool. Um, and I remember, I remember when they chose kind of not to go to college, everyone was like, because that's the thing in New York, you can't not go to college. Like everyone goes to college in LA. It's like very normal not to go to college. No, it was so taboo. I mean, when I dropped out of college, it was like, everyone. I thought I was losing it, but it's so funny. Like in retrospect, they're one of the biggest bands in the world now, but there's so, but it's so true. They, they have such a cool sound sound and it's really like original and like, I love it personally. And even for, even if for the people that don't love it, it's like, you got it. You got it. Acknowledge how original it is. It's so original. And he, did you see the film? No, I really want to see that playing at the movie theater, like two blocks away from my place. I really should go and see it. Yeah. I'll wait for you. Wait for me. Let's do that. Next. Yeah. And then a night out. That sounds. That's not so awesome. Let's do it. Oh, you guys. I'm such an intellectual today. I'm so intellectual. But seriously, we'll see like an old silent Ukrainian film, you know, I'll have to take a hard pass on that one. And I'll just like talk in French and like smoke. Oh yeah. Don't you? Are you, are you not fluent in Italian? No, I'm like, so I like sort of am. I'm dead. I speak enough to have conversations, but I'm not. So you're Italian. I'm like a quarter Italian, a quarter American and half English. Yeah. You're British. Yeah. You don't have to sass with British culture. You are. Have you ever seen Skins? Yes. Oh my God. I'm watching for the first time. Have you ever seen the Inbetweeners? No. Oh my God. Dude, you are missing out. What is that? That's the show. That's the English show. It's like. Okay. Four boys. It's very like boy humor, but I think you'll love it. It's like, it's like. Four boys that go to like a state school and one of the, the, the main guy is this guy who like was just going to a private school and then his mom like went through a divorce and lost all her money so he can't afford it anymore and so he like shows up and he's like all these like poor kids and he's wearing like a suit and he's like looking down on them all and then becomes friends with these four guys and they're the biggest losers in the whole school. Oh my God. I want to watch this show. It's so funny. Do you like to write a lot? Yeah. I do. When did you start writing? I started writing. I mean, I, I guess in just like you in, in like high school writing essays and stuff. I've like, I've, I've started this like film criticism journal blog with my production company recently. You own a production company? Yes. It's awesome. I know. Good for you. I know. I mean, we have like made no money, so it's not like some incredible. But it's still cool. Who is this by the way? I was asking. That is a Slim Arons. I swear it's a Slim Arons. Oh, the photographer you're saying. Oh, you're asking. I'm asking the driver. Oh, I don't fucking know. Yeah. Who gives a shit? Who gives? You know, I did go to F1 in Monaco though, which is where this looks like it is from. Must be. Must be. Was it amazing? Monaco? I've never been to Monaco. Was it cool? So Monaco is not it. Oh, okay. I'm just going to keep it a buck right there. Monaco is not it. Monaco is Vegas in France. Yeah. So let me, as I put it in my Dubai variants. Okay. There's Vegas. There's Dubai. There's Monaco. There's a lot of fake cities. And there's. Was it Culver City? Culver City. And there's Culver City. And they are all the same. Culver City here? Yes. We would call it a Dubai variant. Why? I just stayed in Culver City recently for work. Because it's a fake city. Because it's where all the studios are. No, it's just like, have you been to that? What is that little- The platform. The platform. Like what the fuck is that? What with the stairs that go up and- Yeah. Yeah. I ate in that restaurant. It was so weird. It's weird. It's really weird. It's like Vegas vibes. It's very weird. Although I think I'm not sure. Although I went. There's something kind of interesting. If you walk literally a block north of there, there's a Goodwill and a parking lot. And I'm going to sound so. I don't know LA very well, but there's something so deeply American feeling about these weird neighborhoods in LA where it's like there's not really anything there. There's a warehouse and a store and it feels sort of dusty and. It feels like a hopper painting or something. It's like the gas station. Like very American. Who's Hopper? Hopper. He did like. Let me show you. Let me show you this gas station painting I'm talking about. I have been more intellectual lately though. I can't lie. I've been like experiencing stuff. This is so. I just. I happened to go to the MoMA the other day with my friend who is far smarter than me and he was telling me about Hopper. Like this beautiful- Oh my God. I've never seen that. That's great. Yeah. Right? Wow. Edward Hopper. I kind of get into art. Are you into art? He did the one- Yeah. Yeah. He did the one- Not really. I wish I were more. I'm like very. I love art like that. The sort of. A lot of the abstract stuff just pisses me off probably because I'm not smart enough to really- Right. Because it's just like what the fuck is this? Understand it. But I'm just like fucking. I don't know. Like I love like Picasso and stuff, but like Miro, like the dot, the like dot on a canvas. Doesn't even. I'm like what are you. I don't even know what that is. Come on. It's the same way of like when like- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Like when Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, everyone was like, "Whoa." Do you believe that he had a ghostwriter? I don't know. I'm so the wrong person. We should ask Anya, my acting coach. She would know. Yeah. Because apparently the rumor on the Shakespearean street is that he had a female ghostwriter. Yeah. Yeah. I've heard this. What's the evidence? I have no idea. There is no evidence. There's no evidence. I've also. Well, actually, I'm sorry. I literally. You know what? Are you ever just on autopilot and you just say things? Yes. There's no evidence. There's no evidence. However, here's the evidence. There must be evidence. Yeah. I also, speaking of conspiracy theories, heard that people think Abraham Lincoln was gay. Really? Like for real, for real gay. Like had like male partners that would sleep in his bed. That doesn't surprise me. At all. That doesn't surprise me at all. I think so. I think it feels like it's only in the past few hundred years that being gay has become a taboo thing. Right. Have you ever done like a deep dive on that like ancient Greek gay thing? I've heard about it. I've heard about it. It's so fascinating. There was this. Oh, my God. You'll love this. There was this elite. Apparently, I was like always a real nerd about. Well, about ancient history and like ancient military history, and I studied Latin for years and years and years. Wow. There was this. In Thebes, there was this ancient. What's Thebes? Thebes was like the third biggest city in ancient Greece next to Sparta and Athens. Okay. They were always fighting with each other. Thebes had their most elite. The equivalent of like the Navy SEALs today was 50 pairs of gay lovers who were like not just like sexual lovers. I think they lived together and were like openly in love with each other. Partners. Yeah. Yeah. They would go out onto the battlefield and the whole. They were just insanely trained and everyone. There were descriptions in Spartan and Athenian writing of being like, "Fuck, we went out to war today and we saw the sacred band and we all shat our pants." You know what I mean? They were terrifying because their bond with each other was so strong and they loved each other so much that if one of them got killed, they would just go berserk on the revenge path. Wow. It was like they would fight stronger than anyone else to protect the man next to them that they loved. Wow. That is fascinating. Isn't that awesome? Are you a big history guy? I am. I'm not like. I mean, once again, I have this. My best friend Teddy studied history at St. Andrews and is a genius and I hang out with him all the time and I always feel like a fucking idiot next to him, but I. Yeah, I love it. I studied – Latin was, like, really my thing that I studied my whole life, and that's part of why I lived in Rome because the history there is so amazing. And it's so, like – it's so incredible how cyclical it is. Like, the way in which the Roman Republic collapsed and turned into an empire, like, is just exactly what's happening right now. Yeah, that's what I was about to say. It, like, fell almost overnight, no? It – well, so the thing is, like, yes and no. In the same way that, like, Trump was elected overnight, it was the symptom of a kind of movement towards populism that was, like, happening in the shadows for years and years and years. How did Rome fall? Fuck, man. Oh, man. Don't get me started. Because now I'm, like – I never thought we'd get here in this room. How did Rome – the Republic fall or the empire? What the fuck is the difference? The difference is that the Republic was, like, a democracy, like we have. Right. And then it turned into an empire where Caesar basically, like, took control and then started passing the crown down to his kids. So would you say that Caesar is Trump? In many ways, yeah, honestly. Like, in the sense that he basically – that, like, republics before that – before Caesar had been very much based actually in aristocracy. Like, it was very much a thing of – So I'm going to keep it a buck. I haven't – I haven't known a lot of the words you've said. It's okay. I specifically don't know that one. It's basically, like, it was a group of rich people that were, like, the sort of senators. Oh, like – like – okay, got it. Like aristocrats, like – Aristocrats, got it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they all kind of controlled things. And there was voting, of course, but, like, it was kind of inside baseball. Like, they were the people that controlled everything. And then Caesar basically realized there are way more poor people than there are these rich people. So if I can appeal to them, if I can give them money, if I can, like, appeal to the masses, then I don't actually – any. I don't actually more need the support of this rich group of people that have been controlling everything for forever. But Trump does need their support. He does, but it – but the way that he came into power was by appealing to the masses. Was by appealing to the poor people. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. Which is funny because, of course, like, what he does doesn't benefit them at all. And it's all a trick of the eye. But, like, yeah. Then Caesar was killed, no? Yeah, then he was killed by the rich people, essentially. By Brutus and Cassius and these people that were, like, very part of the establishment. Sorry, I feel like I'm – No, I'm honestly, like, learning. Ancient Rome is my ancient Rome. That is – you mean that's your Roman Empire. That's my Roman Empire, yeah. Is ancient Rome. Yeah. And so where did the power go after Rome? It kind of got fucked for a while. I mean, it went to the east. The Roman Empire, like, had a resurrection in Constantinople, like in Istanbul, where they had a whole – the Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Roman Empire. But then it was, like – it wasn't until, like, I don't know, like, the kind of 10, 1100s, I guess, I think, that, like, the countries started emerging. Yeah. Like France and Spain. The only history that I can – that I – I do like history to an extent. And I actually did just watch a movie that Parker Posey was in. Have you heard of Wild Horse Nine? Yes, the new one. It's really good. That's fucking awesome. I've heard the – because that – because Rockwell was, like, doing – or prepping that, right, when we were doing – Oh, my God. Yeah. And they were talking about it all the time. He's the one that gave that – that really intense monologue, right? Yes. Yeah. Crazy. Yeah. That – your season had some slammer monologues. Wait, but how was Wild Horse Nine? I'm dying to see it. It was amazing. It was amazing. It was amazing, and it was – John Malkovich is in it? Yeah, he's – Yeah. I think he – could go all the way with it you think like he's really gold yeah i think he could oh shit i like really like he was that good damn like i felt that shit oh my god i can't wait i i don't know enough about like the chilean coup yeah but i knew is that the u.s they had a major hand in like um dismantling like regimes around the world that like yeah yes like they thought didn't suit their purpose yeah and so basically the movie is about him like reconciling with the fact that he was a major player in a lot of these regimes that went down and then so the chilean coup is kind of his like last hurrah in a sense and he's like there's two students from chile that are there that love the current administration oh my god it's so good that sounds amazing it's so fucking good there have been so many i mean did you see uh the secret agent the wagon i did see the secret agent i mean there's so much it's how cool was that last scene how about that last scene cool oh have you seen digger no i love it okay what what is it it's like i don't i don't want to spoil it but it's like basically it's a lot like that movie don't look up do you remember that movie fucking loved that movie i loved that movie too but i do have to say i think when that movie came out at least what i remember the discourse being about it was like it's a little too soon and like for that kind of sweeping political takedown this feels like the perfect time and it's a very similar thing of like climate catastrophe the people in power doing nothing to stop it and and being completely unashamed about doing nothing to stop it and like where does that leave us and what's and what and tom cruise plays this guy who's like an oil an oil man who like is basically single-handedly responsible for what will be the destruction of the world and he just doesn't give a shit and it's kind of and he's good he's good at that he's amazing so what he's like my favorite he's one of my favorite actors of all time really what else is he in that you love like he what i love so much about tom cruise is that he has been in every kind of movie like he so he did digger it is a totally new genre i mean that isn't a genre it doesn't even exist as a genre that's a totally new thing he was in all the mission impossible movies he did all the action stuff you have to you have to see the third one because philip seymour hoffman is the villain and he's unbelievable and wow he was in tropic thunder never seen which he's hilarious and he plays a movie producer that's like a total like he's a it's out and out comedy like you would fucking love that movie but then also like risky business right jerry mcguire the color of money um uh what's it called a few good men is that yeah yeah uh uh what else eyes wide shut eyes wide shut i did see him in eyes wide minority report like he he's just done every kind of movie and he's been incredible in every one of them you know i mean would you rather be a part of a movie like digger that is like so polarizing and that people either fucking hate it or fucking love it yeah or would you rather be a part of a movie that are people are like that's a good movie definitely the form the first one yeah the digger type when you take a big fucking swing at something it's so cool and respectable and like whenever i see a movie that is like that that either everyone loves or everyone hates i always kind of wind up loving it even just for the sake of just being like how ballsy in this time when everything is so data driven and about ip and like hedging your bets on something like that i don't know i don't know i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know i don't know i don't know what i'm gonna do with it i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that i don't know what i'm gonna do with that by trying to make everything just like the most recent thing that's been successful yeah to make something that's like truly original and just fucking go for it is will always uh garner my complete respect you know i mean do is there another movie that you can think of that has done that for you what were the movies that people didn't like last year i can't remember like eddington eddington i thought was great yeah a lot of people were half and were split on anora anora i loved i fucking loved anora i fucking love anora there's but it's because it's original you know what i mean it's like that's you've never seen a movie about a like a stripper dating a stripper in coney island dating a russian oligarch yeah it's awesome it's awesome i yeah i always just feel i i i'm trying to think of if there are other new ones but like yeah people it's always the people that are like pushing that pushing boundaries always deserve at least respect even if you don't fuck with what the thing is you know i mean even like like kim like cameron winter you know i mean like geese people like lots of people don't like geese lots of people are like oh it's i don't like the way it sounds but you can't deny that it sounds like nothing else which is awesome because i was listening to the live album and i was like oh my god i really he there is no one i've heard that sounds like him yeah no one no one no one and the only other time i've ever felt that way or i i've seen people feel that way is with amy winehouse yeah the first rebellious thing i did was when i was like 15 or something i kind of like snuck out and went to go see chance the rapper back at forest hills when he was like king of the world coloring book had just come out i went i have a picture honestly let me try and find it what the fuck happened what happened to him because he was so good yeah look at this this is me and my friend lc in just a sea of people at the chance the rapper concert when i was 15 no oh i need to see more live music i really know that's what i've been saying too it's it's so worth it it's so worth it i think i'm gonna do glastonbury yes dude i did glastonbury last year and it was fucking awesome do you see the 1975 i did not oh i saw i saw olivia oh how was that i heard she shut it the fuck down she was unbelievable she shut it down there was there there was like half a million people there or something crazy like that definitely hundreds of thousands of people it was insane i saw rod stewart oh so cool it was really cool that 1975 said i will say made me a 1975 fan yeah like i had liked them before i'd seen them live and i'd been a fan but that said i remember seeing i need to listen to more of them they're so good yeah yeah and like there's so many songs that like you i just have never heard like when i was at that show i bumped into literally in the sea of people like not in some like fancy back room like in the in the in the in a field i bumped into amy lou wood at oh that's so funny glastonbury it was really weird and she was like getting swept by a sort of mob of people and she was and she goes it was the most like ethereal cool thing i've ever heard anyone say she goes meet me by the big tree and then like faded into this group of people and i was like she's so everything i was like what the fuck what's the big tree and i turn around and there's this huge fucking tree and i was like it must be that and i like go to the thing and she's at the big tree oh fuck okay i guess we'll skip therapists today unless there's something that you're like angry about that you want to talk about but you seem like a pretty you seem in good spirits pretty content is there anything that's the one the one thing i'm actually curious what your take is on this we can do it quick but the one thing that's been pissing me off is the lions in new york the lines what is is there a line epidemic there is a line i will say if i try to get frozen yogurt which i have multiple times why is the line yogurt i don't is yogurt that good like i'm really tell you some of the places are not that's what i'm saying it's really weird and i the thing that that makes me confused about it is i'm like like tourists coming to new york is awesome like they they feel the economy they're they love the city like there's some people in new york hate tourists i'm always like it's great like they're like we all love the city that we're from like other people should be able to enjoy it but like if i'm a tourist i'm in new york for a weekend let's say i'm there for two days do i want to spend six hours of my waking day standing on bowery waiting i don't wait lines by the way i refuse yeah okay so these are the tell me what's wrongs okay i think i just learned i have misophonia it means i'm incredibly i know what it means you know what misophonia means like the soup i don't know what misophonia means it's like you're very what about about like chewing it's like it's chewing like you get very sensitive to sounds yeah it literally sends me into fight or flight because it pisses me off so much when people chew with their mouths open slurp talk too loud etc now knowing this is a thing i'm really aware of it and it's so much worse it makes me irritated to be around people and i don't want to be that way is it like so rude to tell people to shut the fuck up when i'm triggered by it i'm like willing to lose friendship oh my god so it is rude actually and the reason i'll tell you it's rude is because i your problems making them other people's problems is rude so like when i'm out at dinner i get very claustrophobic like i know the reason i can only sit for like 50 minutes it's because i'm claustrophobic yeah but that's still rude like two things can exist at the same time i think i think there's like a big thing with our generation about like self-care yeah that can sometimes bleed into just like selfishness selfishness and like narcissism where it's like yeah of course you should look after yourself but like it's not yeah you you can't not everything revolves around you and like being forced to do things you don't want to do or listen to things you don't want to listen to builds character and like makes it so that you can be a person in the world and and i get it it's fucking annoying to have someone chewing in your ear it sucks and you and if they're a close friend of yours then you can be like yo shut the fuck up yeah but like sometimes there are things in life that you just have life is not fair life is not fair it is not fair you gotta just shut up and listen so sometimes you just have to listen to someone too yeah i give my full attention to each of my friends and never want anyone to feel invalidated even if they are truly in the wrong i feel that i'll flip it and make them feel valid and whatever is wrong and help them get through it but i never receive any of the friendship i give no matter how many times i speak about speak up about it oh so they've said something nothing changes but they have been my best friend since i was little i need advice on how to stop giving 100 when i never get the same you need new friends really okay i have a take on this i don't know if you'll agree with i think actually the solution is to give less yeah because i think that you i think that first of all it's actually not like because the start of that said that like when even when i feel i think my friend's wrong about something i'll tell them they're right or whatever that's not good like a really good friendship is like you hold each other accountable and make each other better people i know don't you think yeah yeah yeah with me what i tell my friends sometimes is like yeah i will have your back of course if you're wrong of course but know that you are wrong of that's exactly right know that you are wrong but i will have your back yeah but it depends if the if the per if the person's friends are like if if if you're going through something and your friends are not there for you then yeah then you then find new friends find new friends and give less and see what happens my roommate is a super judgy and negative person but she stays in our common area all day like 8 a.m to 8 p.m and anytime i go to get food she starts a convo that's miserable to get through so i feel like i'm stuck in my room anytime i'm home what do i do wait what was the first sentence of that my roommate is her roommate just sucks and she's like i can't leave my room because i can't deal with her you just need to start so i know we just said not to be selfish but in this case you actually just need to just be like i can't right now well because she's not your friend she's your roommate right and you just need to be like i can't right now and that's awkward and sometimes you have to sit through the awkwardness but you need to be like i can't right now and sometimes you have to sit through the awkwardness but you need to say that sooner rather than later yeah because the later you leave it the more you become normal friends and then it's like then if you say something then it's like fuck you yeah my dog is so mean to everyone we invite over and now people have stopped coming over so she'll literally attack whoever walks through the front door causing them to drop and break shit just be generally pissed off etc she's never bitten a guest so that's good but we've like tried training her and she's a little better but everyone is still scared to come over and that's just life i know so many friends that have had dogs like that and it's kind of just like you it's almost the charm of coming over yeah that dog that that dog is going to be insane yeah and you're going to know that it depends on how your friends are reacting to it it also depends on who you're having over if you if you're the kind of person i mean what if you what if you have a have someone over that you maybe want to kiss bang yeah or bang yeah and then your dog's like pumping them isn't that kind of charming though it's like funny it is it's like oh my god remember when my dog welcome this is my life you're part of it now oh my god right it reminds me of the dogs in bastion show with parker posey yeah yeah honestly i think it's fine i think it's charming it's charming well sam what did we learn today what did we learn actually so much by the way like we learned about the roman empire which i hope you cut because fucking what am i talking about wait no
