Session 150: Lisa

Lisa shares her journey of personal growth and cultural reconnection, highlighting her first solo award win at the VMAs for the deeply personal song "Dream," which speaks to the emotional experience of loving someone who is only seen in dreams. Inspired by her time in Thailand—where she spent months reconnecting with her roots—she created her new EP *Press Play*, blending Thai instruments like the Thai guitar with pop music. The project reflects her evolution from a K-pop group member to a confident solo artist, embracing vulnerability and authenticity. She discusses her early life, including changing her name at 13, and shares candid reflections on anxiety, performance nerves, and the importance of personal boundaries. Lisa also reveals her love for live music, tequila, and outdoor experiences, while offering insight into relationship dynamics, emphasizing red flags like financial pressure and green flags like thoughtful gestures. She values emotional connection, privacy, and self-care, balancing her global career with meaningful personal moments. Through her openness and authenticity, Lisa demonstrates a strong sense of self, rooted in her heritage and personal experiences.

And I have like a few, have you been to Thai town? >> Yes. >> They have a place, a dessert place called Kanoban Kanoban. They have like a toast with like a pandan sauce, with a pandan ice cream, and they have like a Thai tea-shaped ice. >> That sounds amazing. Thai tea is one of my favorite things in the entire world. >> So good. >> So good. >> Yeah, so that's my favorite place. >> Well, welcome to Therapist. >> Thank you, thank you for having me. >> Thanks for being here and congratulations on your VMA win last night. >> I know, thank you. >> For dream. >> For dream. >> And what is the very special song, very vulnerable song. >> Yes, it's very special. >> Yeah. >> It was also, that's a fan voted award. >> Right? >> Yes. >> So you're- >> It's crazy. >> Yeah, it's crazy. >> I love my fans. I mean, thank you, Lili. >> What did it feel like to win your first, that was your first non-K-pop award, right? Your first solo award, what did that feel like? >> It's so special because it's, the song is stream. It's about, you know, my personal, you know, inspired by my personal story. >> So it's, and it's my first, like, you know, like a personal stuff going out to the world, which is, you know, like me and my team were, we were like, oh, we're not sure that is that okay, too. We put out this out, but we were like, okay, it doesn't matter, you know, it's my first. It's personal, you know? >> Yeah. >> But I think a lot of people can rely on, relate on to this song because it's stream. It's about, in the relationship with someone, it could be your friends, your, you know, your families, or, you know, or it could be, like, love relationship. But you couldn't see that person anymore. You can only see them in your dreams. So I think a lot of people can relate. So we're like, okay, let's put it out and now I got this, it's like, it's crazy. >> And does it feel like, does it amp you up for like your biggest residency and like everything? >> Yeah, definitely. Last night, and also, I did Sawadika performing for the first time ever at the VMA. So it's like, it's crazy. Now I'm like, okay, I'm looking forward for my residency. >> Yeah. Were you nervous before? >> I was so nervous. Still nervous. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So, but yeah, I'm going to get, um, start with the rehearsal and everything and get ready for the biggest residency. >> It's going to be so awesome. I have to come see it. >> Please. >> I will. >> I will. >> I will. >> I will. >> I will. >> I can do like 24 hours. >> That's Vegas. >> That's like the biggest, like, I have the big studio there. >> Yeah. >> That we, um, that we read to or whatever. >> Yeah. >> So we stayed there for like three, four days. >> Yeah. >> Oh, wow. I mean, I guess it's that's a dip. That's like, like, proper Vegas, not like casino Vegas. >> But you can do only 24 hours. >> 24 hours. >> Okay. >> That's good enough. >> Yeah. I mean, I'll come see the show and- >> Yeah. >> And then you just buy. >> And I heard you like tequila shots. >> Oh, my goodness. >> I'm a vodka girl. >> But I'll drink tequila for you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> I'll drink tequila for you. >> Or I'll drink vodka for you. >> No, Lisa. >> Why? >> I'm not, I'm not making you drink vodka for me. I'm drinking tequila. >> Why not? >> Because it's your show. >> Okay. >> And you're the star. >> Oh, it's so sweet. >> It's true. >> Imagine me being like Lisa. You're gonna have to drink vodka for me. >> I can do one or two. >> Oh, but the thing is I can do tequila. I can do tequila. And I need to grow up. Tequila's for grownups. >> Bokka for babies. Bokka for babies. >> I thought it's a switch. >> No, no. I once told someone. >> No, no. I once told someone. >> No, I once told someone I drank vodka shot. And they said, oh, grow up. And I said, yeah. That's about right. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. So we'll do tequila shots. >> We'll do tequila shots. >> Yes. >> I watched your documentary. Oh, is Lalisa. I found it so incredibly moving. I was really not expecting you to open up the way you did. I had no idea about so many things. I didn't know that you changed your name when you were 13 years old. >> Yes, I did. >> Because a fortune teller told your mom. >> I know. >> What was that telling your friends? I have a different name now. >> I feel like in Thai culture, I think that's not normal normal. >> Okay, got it. >> It's not like a questioning question. It's not like, why are you changing your name? It's more like, oh, you went to see a fortune teller. Cool. And they asked you to change your name? Cool. >> Yeah. >> It's like, they're more like, oh, who? Like, I want to go. I want to go see this fortune teller. Like, can you tell me? Like, tea. >> Yeah. >> They love. And there's a lot of, oh, my friends went to the same fortune teller. Like, few of my friends changed their names. >> Oh, wow. >> Yeah. >> Wow, I've never been to Thailand. >> Oh, my God, you have to go. You're going to love Thailand. >> I know. >> If you love Thai food. >> It's one of my favorites. >> If you love Anna Jack. >> Yeah. I've been desperate, desperate, desperate to go. I tried to go in high school and I couldn't. And I need to go. And then after seeing you in White Lotus, seeing that season, I was like, I have to go. >> I know. It makes you want to go, no? >> It's beautiful. It's one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. >> No. Yeah. But I'm a bias, so I think yes. When you filmed White Lotus, was that like the most time you had spent in Thailand consecutively since you moved to Korea? >> Yes. >> Wow. >> Yes. Usually, I just go there for a week or two and that's it. And yeah, that was like the first time after I moved to Korea. And I spend that long in Thailand. It's like six, seven months, even though it's like back and forth. >> Yeah. >> Like two weeks in Thailand, back to LA work, come back, stay one week, go back. So it's like, it's really nice for me to like connect, like reconnect to my root. And also my mom, she, she goes everywhere with me. Like she was at the set. She also, on the White Lotus. >> She is? >> Yeah. >> Where? >> It's like somewhere behind. >> Yeah. >> But so awesome. >> Yeah. >> She's like, she's like, she's all glammed up, sitting. >> Uh-huh. >> Like, and it's like, I don't remember which scene, but she was in the White Lotus. >> Yeah. >> It's so fun to get to include your family. >> I know. >> It makes it so much more special. >> Yeah, she's like, oh my god. I got a debut as an actress. >> She's so cute. >> And yeah. >> How did you find acting? Did you enjoy it? >> Yes. >> And I enjoy it, but still new to me, I still get nervous all the time. I'm like, I still dream like, I couldn't, that I couldn't remember my lines. And I was like, you know, it's like a nightmare. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, but it's fun. >> Do you have like bad anxiety? >> Bad anxiety. Not really. But it just, you know, I get nervous every single time. Because I don't want to say something wrong, and I always say something wrong. >> Really, you think that? >> Yeah. I always say wrong, like, line. >> Oh, you mean on, like, set. >> On set. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got it. >> Always. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> And the White Lotus, I'm like, oh my god. I can't say something wrong in front of my quite. >> I know. I know, but he's so lovely now. >> Oh, she's so sweet. >> So sweet. >> Wonderful. I love. I miss him. >> Do you guys keep in touch? >> We have like a group chat, but we don't really send anything to the group chat anymore. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, because I feel like everybody now has their own schedule. So, you know, like, in a different time zone. So we don't want to, like, you know, send the message to, like, wake someone up, you know. >> I've actually started thinking about that recently. When I text people, I'm like, oh, I wonder what time it is for them. >> I've started to, like, care. >> But not earlier. >> Wait, no, I could be waking someone up right now. Because when I go to bed, my phone's on silent, so I just don't. >> Okay. Wakes me up. Oh my god. Always like when I when I come to LA always My friends always text me like 2 a.m. In the morning and you're like I'm like I need to sleep guys Yeah, but I don't do like night like a night mode or what he called night mode Yeah, well, there's night mode and there's do not. But I feel like it's still the same. Like, the inside, it's just like, I'm nervous and I want to do good. So it's the same, but it's a little different is, I know, I know what to do. - Yeah. - Like, I know how to focus, how to like, you know, not to, not being like, oh my god, oh my god, what, what's next, what's next. - Yeah. - So I'm more calm. - Yeah. - I guess. - Like, 5% more calm. - Do you enter like a different persona when you step on stage? - I don't, I don't think so. It's just, it's always like, always like Lisa. - It's always me, it's always like Lisa, but I feel like, I feel like stage is my safe zone and I'm doing, I'm not doing something too crazy. I know what I'm doing and I practice for it. So I kind of know what I can, what to expect. But of course, like, when I see the audience, my fans, they're screaming, they're having fun with me. It's just, I just gain energy through that and like, I can do more on stage. - Do you have the song you're most excited to perform off the EP? - Oh. Oh. So many. I excited to perform V12. Lady Gaga. - Oh. - Yeah. - What are some of your favorite memories from growing up before you went to trainee camp? - What's my favorite? Like some of your favorite memories growing up in Thailand. - Oh, every single, no, not every single birthday of my bum. That's one birthday party. I had like a little party at my house when I was 10. And then I invited my friends over and my dad cooked them like a chocolate mousse. It's so good. And then he gave me the envelope. I was like, well, what is this? And he was like, open it. Open it. I'm like, okay. And I opened it. It's a Disney Land ticket. Tickets for my birthday. I'm like, oh, because he knows that I love Disney so much. And I wanted to go to Disney Land. And Hong Kong, Disney Land is like the closest for us to fly from Thailand, you know? So yeah, that's like that's still like fresh in my head. It's like the most like good memory of, yeah, when I was the child. Should we get into the tummy? What's wrong? - Okay. What is this? - These are where people write in questions and we give them advice. - Oh. - Yeah. - Oh my gosh. - So it's fine. - Okay. - I have this bit where whenever me and my friends are out, I always make up fake stuff that they've done. Sad, et cetera. I know on paper, this sounds evil, but it's always so clearly a joke. And we always leads to us endearing ourselves to whatever new group we're with, but my friends hate it. Oh, so she, they make, when they go out, when they go out, she makes up stories like that she lies. - Okay. - She lies and makes up stories to make new friends. And her friends get really angry about it, but she loves it. I would say keep doing you. That's what I would say. - Yeah. Why not? - Right. - We make new friends, but the friends who already friends hate it. - Yeah, like stop lying about us, like stop making up stuff. It would be like if I went out and was like pretended to be British and like pretended that way. - What does that have fun though? - Yeah, I think it's fun. - We need, we need that kind of friends in the group. - Agreed. - Right. - Do you like to go out? - Not really. - Really? - Sometimes. Do you? - Mm-hmm. - That's why I said I could go vodka, I could go tequila, I could go gin, I could go whatever you need. - Yeah. - Okay, even though you love vodka, if you see me, you'll be like, oh, I love tequila. - Yes, yes. - Yes, yes. - Shape shifter. - Yes. - But like, I do, like, yeah, I love to go out, do you have like a favorite? Well, you said the first time you ever went clubbing was when you were 25. - Yeah, in Vegas. - In Vegas. - That's my first club. - Did you go to excess? - I don't know where. I don't remember. I don't know names. - Yeah. - I just go in and then I don't ask like where. What was your first clubbing experience like? - So good. - It's so fun. - So good. I think I start to drink tequila since that first club. And then it's my throat, it's just, you know, my throat is just, my voice is gone the day after. And then I keep doing that for like a couple months and now like, I'm good, I'm fine. Like after tequila shot, day after I can, I can sing, yeah. - Yeah, I learned recently that like, I'm a grown-up now. - Yeah, no, that's what it feels like. I'm like, okay, like I feel like I can take more than I think, you know, because sometimes when I go out, I'm like, I can move, like, do you get hung over? - Every single time. - What do you, what's your, like, what do you do when you're hung over? I assume you just have to push through. - Coconut water. - Oh, really? - I drink coconut water, sleep a lot, some, a cup noodle. - What is yours, like, sleeping routine? Do you sleep hot? Do you sleep cold? - Sleep hot. - How hot? - Sleep warm. Can I say warm, not hot? - Yeah. - It's just like, it's just like, still here. - Mm-hmm. And like, no air conditioner. - No air. - Okay. I sleep at 62 degrees. - Yeah, but at least hot now. Today is really hot. - I know. - Please? - It was so ungodly hot the other week that I left the house and just walked back inside and said, I'm not doing this. - You're like, I'm not going out. - I'm not going out. I said, I'm not doing this. I'm going to go watch TV, which I do all the time. - What do you watch? What's your favorite show? - Oh my god. Okay. What type of shows do you like? Like, what type of show would you want to watch? Because I'll give you a recommendation based off of that. - Mm-hmm. Something cutesy. - If you want something cutesy, I think you would really like off campus. - Wait, I think I watched like the first episode or something. - It gets really, really good. - It's season two. - I was locked. Yes, and they're already filming. Like, so you can just lock it now. - Okay. - Off campus is amazing. - Okay. - I loved. Well, if you want something like juicy, like my favorite show of all time is Scandal. - Scandal? - With Carrie Washington. It's about a woman who runs this like PR crisis firm in like DC that like help. - Like clients with like emergencies. - Oh. - And it's very scandalous. - Okay, juicy. - Very juicy. - Very juicy. - Very juicy. - Okay. - She's hooking up with the president. - Oh my god. - Yeah. - Okay. Okay, okay. - It's the best show ever. - But it was Scandal? - Scandal. - Okay, Scandal. - It is seven seasons. You will. So if you're ever like, if you're ever like, I'm so bored. What do I do? Seven seasons. - Yeah. - Okay. - What is your speaking of season? - No. - What is your favorite season of the year? - What? I love. I love fall. - Me too. Fall and spring. Summer's too hot. But I hate winter, but yeah. - Do you love to shop? - I love shopping. - More than anything in the world. - Oh, I need to stop. - No, you don't. - I told myself to stop. - You deserve it. - Okay. Yes, we deserve it. - We deserve it. - Yeah, we deserve it. - We deserve it. - What's your favorite thing to shop for? - Oh. Coats. - Coats. But not like, I don't want to say like, I'm a collector. - Yeah, yeah. - I'm a collector. - Yeah. - I'm a collector, yeah. - Well, you know, they just released their first four-seater Ferrari. - Sorry. - They just released their first four-seater Ferrari. - Yes. - I was in it yesterday. I was like, ooh. - Oh, the nuance. - Yeah, it was like four. Because I've only ever been in a two-seater Ferrari. And it was four seats. It was like a proper like SUV. - Like a SUV. - Not an SUV, but like a. - Wait, which one are you talking about? - I couldn't tell you the name. - Oh, I guess it's just they just released. - Yeah. - I was told it was the first four-seater. - Oh. - Am I right? - You have the Ferrari. - Pro-Sungate. - Yeah. - Pro-Sungate. I have. - I have that. - My ex and I broke up a little over a month ago. And it ended really badly. I finally felt okay and felt like I was moving on. And then he got a job at my work. I have to see him multiple times a day. And he purposefully parks right beside me in the parking lot. Even though the law is huge. He's been in try hard mode too. Sucking up to the boss. And my theory is he's talking shit about me to my co-workers. This is unhinged to please help me. I know. - He did it on purpose. - He's of course. Men are evil. Men are evil and easy. - Red flag. - Yeah. - Oh my god. - So here's what I would do if I were her. - Why? - I would start playing the game right back. Like you have to, like if he is, or actually, you know what, my frontal lobe is developed. So let me take back my answer. - Okay. - If I were her, I would just take the high road. I know that everyone's true colors come out eventually. - Uh-huh. - And his true colors will come out eventually. - So you're just gonna wait. - I just waited out the waiting game. - Okay. - Your bosses will see, 'cause she's scared that he is, like, kind of talking, trying to get, he got a job where she works, and she's scared that he's trying to get her out. - Oh. - Right. - I don't know how people have to deal with this. - I know. - I was like, how? - I know. - I don't even know. - But what is your biggest red flag in a relationship? (gasps) - And biggest, biggest green flag. (gasps) - Biggest red flag. - I went to a sushi place with my mom and my one of my best friends. It's like only three of us, three girls, like we're gonna eat. And I was just like joking. I was like, oh, are you gonna pay for us? You know, take care of the bill. It's like, no. (laughs) - Even if I'm kidding, say yes. (laughs) - I'm like, is that a red flag or no? - Yes. - It's like, it's like, it's like, it's-- - You're a rock star and you should be treated as such. - I mean, I'm not like, I'm not asking for, to pay my meal every single time, you know, it's just like-- - But also, if he's courting you, I'm like trying to gain your love. I think, and you were making the joke, like, yeah, pay for me, pay for me. I was like, I thought it's like, oh, maybe you just say no, and he's gonna, like, surprise later that, like, oh, no, no, surprise, I paid. - Yeah. - Yeah, so it's like, oh, that's a surprise. - Yeah, that's a surprise. - Okay, this is a surprise. I'm paying myself. I was like, cool. - What is your biggest green flag? - Everything little thing, you know, it's just like, open a water for you. Like, you know, it's like, it's just a little tiny thing that it's nice. - Yeah. - It's like-- - I can't do it by myself, but I'm just like, just doing something that you don't even have to ask. - Yeah, so it's like, what is that? What type of love language is that? - Access. - Access, there's like multiple love languages. And I think my love language is words of affirmation. - What is affirmation? - So, like, someone me being like, you're so beautiful. You're so great. - Oh, you kept saying that. - That's like the way, like, I feel love. Like, someone like tells me, like, you're, I love you, I love you, I love you. I'm like, oh, okay, great. - Oh. - Yeah. - I don't know what's my love languages. I have to try to-- - Access to your best. - Oh. - Yeah, paying the bill, opening your water. - I was like, I don't need-- - I want you guys to pay every single bill, you know? I have money too, but it's just like, it's a little thing that it's just that nice. - It shows you love. - Yeah, I was with my mom, you know, if it's just, you know, it's just-- - Yeah. - Yeah. - Do you cook a lot? 'Cause you're stepped out as a cook, right? - Yeah, I don't cook. - Okay. - My mom doesn't cook. - He cooks. - He cooks. - And what's his favorite dish of his that he makes? - He do like a, what do you call, wait, I forgot a name. FAQs

My favorite Thai spot in LA is Anna-Jack. I also enjoy Tuck, Tuck, Tye, but Anna-Jack stands out to me.

Yes, I’ve been eager to try Thai boat noodles. A great spot is Mamalai in the Thai Town area, which serves both dry boat noodles and Tom Yum variations.

My new EP is deeply inspired by my time spent in Thailand—six to seven months—where I reconnected with my roots through food, family, and culture. I incorporated Thai sounds, like a Thai guitar, into the pop tracks to reflect that journey.

My most personal song is 'Dream,' which was fan-voted as a solo award. It's inspired by my own life story and speaks to the feeling of missing someone only in dreams, which many people can relate to.

It felt incredibly special because it was personal and authentic. It was my first time sharing a deeply personal story with the world, and I saw how many people could relate to the emotions expressed in the song.

I love cutesy shows like 'Off Campus' and juicy dramas like 'Scandal.' I’m especially drawn to stories with emotional depth and strong characters.
