(upbeat music) - This episode we have "Malcom's Hard-Ord." - Hi, Malcolm. - Hi, Jake. - Last time I saw you was at Coachella. - Yeah, love Coachella. - Did you have fun? - It was cool. Honestly, after Coachella, I didn't talk to anyone for three weeks. - Why, what? - Because it was, I think, too many, too many handshakes. It took the energy drained out of me from all the like, you know, if you met this guy and it's like, hey, what's up, I'm Malcolm. And it's like, you're never gonna remember my name. I'm gonna never gonna remember your name. It's kinda disheartening. - I did that to you. - Yeah, but I remember you. - No, but I did that to you. I introduced you to you. - Oh, yeah, for sure. And of course, that's a part of the culture of it, but it's just like, I think the music was great. Had a lot of like-- - Would you see? - I saw, my favorite act was "Turn Style." You know what, I'm sad I missed them. - Yeah, and I just kinda happened to stumble upon them. And I don't really listen to "Turn Style." And it was the best, it was like spiritual and beautiful. And it was cool to discover live music, or like music through a live performance. - That's my favorite thing. - Yeah, which I didn't know I loved that. And now now I'm like, oh, wait, I need to do this more. - Yeah. - Are you, that's the only time that's ever happened to you? - Yeah, I saw LCD sound system, and I hadn't really listened to them. I heard a few songs, but I hadn't really listened to them in depth, and I saw them live. And that was the other time. And that's it. - Do you wanna tell me about this flip flops? - Yeah, they're actually my friends' brand. - Okay. - Yeah, my friend Evan makes them, but I've just been like, really flipping and flopping with my shoes. - Do you like how one-you, do you like when you walk and it makes the, like, sounds? - I guess I don't really realize it. Those flip flops look like they spring back on the heel. - They totally do. Actually, just, I was rocking these other flip flops and then I put these on the day. It feels like siblings don't get along as they should. - But she told me you're great at basketball. - That's what she told me she told you. (laughing) She said, like, she was like, I told them to ask you about basketball. I was like, I don't know why she said that too. I'm okay. She said you'd be, you loved basketball. - I love basketball. I still love it. And did you play in high school? - My, my claim to fame with basketball on high school is that I didn't play on the team. I played baseball quit to, like, Tretheater, which is another story, but like, anyways, didn't play on the basketball team, but in senior year, they were doing a three on three, like, school-wide basketball tournament. And, like, the players on the team would play in it. And I took two of my friends that weren't on the team, and we won, the whole thing. - John, you guys had not played basketball. - Yeah, we weren't, like, on the team, but we played basketball, but we weren't, like, on the team and making our whole personality. And then we won. - And we're the people that were on the team so embarrassed. - Yeah. - And I have this hole in my jeans, and I'm just like, yeah. That's just the right amount of real estate. - Well, I would assume you're wearing underwear. You'd assume. - I would. - I would hope so. - I am. - You know, anyone that just, like, raw dogs pants. - Asher Cartman. - Who? - From South Park? - No, no, no, no. - Asher Cartman, my-- - Oh, that's Eric Cartman. - Eric Cartman. It was so cold outside, I know it's so hot. - And it was cold outside in the waiting room or in the outside, like of the world outside. - Both. - Okay, 'cause it just started getting hot in the real world outside. - I know. - Which was really random, 'cause it was gloomy as F. - You're on the East Side now? - East Side King. - Do you love the East Side? Someone's gonna hold it down over there. - I feel like a lot of people are holding it down. - I know, I know. I like the East Side, but I grew up on the West Side. Where'd you grow up? - New York. - Where in New York? - Washington Heights. - Is that from. - In the Heights? - Yeah. - Yeah. - Is that the play you were in when you tried theater? - No, Audrey was in it though. They did that when I was like in eighth grade, and she was in junior or something. - What play did you do when you tried theater? - I did, it was called something rotten. - Do you remember any of it? - I was in the troop, I was in the ensemble, and I danced around and I loved the musical. I actually saw the musical on Broadway too before they, and we were the first high school production of it ever. - Wow! - Thanks. - Um, but it was cool. - Do you remember any of the songs? - Yeah, I was like, "What's that coming out of the. " It's called like the black plague. That was the song I sang. I didn't even, it wasn't even so low. - I would imagine. - 'Cause you were in the troop. - It wasn't a fricking troop. - Yeah, it wasn't a one-man troop, sadly. I would have been down for it to be a one-man troop. - Do you smoke weed? - No, I haven't in like five years. - Were you a big stoner in high school? - Well, yeah, I just like was smoking weed like sophomore year, high school, like all the time, and then I realized that's not my swag, and I don't, I swear to God, I'll never smoke weed ever again in my life. I freaked out. - Wait, why? What happened? - It just like doesn't mesh well with my brain at all, and it made me very frickin' weird. - Yeah, it's just like, it clearly is like four people and not four people. And if it's not for you, like, it's not for you, and it's not for me. - It's definitely not for me, but I love it. Okay, so you'll like explain. - Like, it's like for me, you know how people are like, I love like a glass of wine at the end of the day? - I'm sure. - I love just like smoking a little bit at the end of the day, just laying down. - So it is my mind-worth. - Yeah, there you go, that. - Well, then after those 10 minutes, 'cause that only lasts 10 minutes. That whole experience is only 10 minutes. After those 10 minutes, it's downhill, really bad. - Really, really. - Like, just like freaking out about stuff. - Yeah, and the next day I'm still freaking out, like today was just tears. - Tears. - Mm-hmm, interesting. Does it make you like kind of cloudy? - Always. - Okay, so it's for, well, better be a good fucking 10 minutes. - It's the best 10 minutes of all time. I do my best work in those 10 minutes. - Good for you. Yeah, I think, I don't think it's worth it. So it's like the hub of all media for me. Like, can I get this back? And it's still haven't gotten it back since like whatever midnight last night. And I just want to know why. And when I get it back, I'm just curious. Do you use TikTok at all? It's not the same. It's not the same. It's like I have TikTok is for like, yeah, like Instagram is an art piece. I kind of agree. And I remember getting up out of bad and I went to go stand up and fell to the floor and I couldn't walk for an entire week. And everyone was like, oh yeah, that's like mini polio. And so it's just in your legs where you're like coughing and like did you have like anything? - I just couldn't walk. - And then my parents were like, you can if you walk to us, we'll take you to twin boots. What's it called? - Two boots. - Six. And they were like if you walk to us out of your like little, not what's not soldier, stroller, you can get pizza and I got up and I walked. - And then how long did the polio last just a week? - Yeah, can you fact check me on this on baby polio? Now, if I got lice, knock on freakin' wood. - That's not wood. - Whatever. - That would suck, 'cause I like my hair. I was so down, I was like, oh, another buzz cut, not sure, but now I'm like (sighs) buzz cut, I don't want that right now. - Have you ever had bad bugs? - No. Why are you lying? 'Cause no, my friend did, but I wasn't gonna blast them. Zip zap, oh my mom, my mom had bug bugs once. She got it, she got traveling, and she was really pissed. And I wasn't there the whole time, but every time I'd call her and be like, how's it going? She'd just be like, these fucking bad bugs, I'm gonna freak out. - It holds away, even though it's not tensionally your fault. Like, once you have bad bugs, you're the villain. - You think so? - It's like in the Spider-Man movie when he becomes Venom. It's just like, he can't get it off of him. And like, you're still mad at him, but it's not his fault. - What's your favorite movie? - I'm Spider-Man, no, I'm just gonna (laughs) It's like, probably goodwill hunting or elf. Or Nemo, what do you love about Nemo? Well, it's a childhood movie and I've seen it so many times, and I love the father-son relationship between Marlin and Nemo, and it's just a perfect movie. It's just like. - Do you have a favorite quote? - They're in this whale, and Dory and Marlin are hanging onto the taste buds of this whale, they're trying to escape and ignorant, but beautiful old Dory is telling Marlin. It's telling Marlin, you have to let go if you wanna leave this whale to keep on in Nemo, you have to let go, and then she just yells at him and she's like, you have to let go. And he's like controlling over Nemo, and that's why he left, and it's this whole dynamic. And Dory, in such a pure sense, is like, you just have to let go if you wanna give further and let this evolve, and he takes it in the sense of you have to let go of Nemo. And it's just beautiful. - Pixar movies are the best. - I remember watching that scene in Marine Bioclast for his period, senior year, and I had a mask on 'cause I was in school with a mask. - Yeah, and I had to put my mask over my face 'cause I was tearing up. - Tell me about what high school was like in COVID. - Well, it's like a whole year, my whole junior year, I was online the entire time, not going, 'cause it was like, it was Zoom school, you know? Like, no one went to the campus. - Were you just miserable? - No, I was just like learning how to play the guitar and going on bike rides, and honestly panicking a little bit, 'cause I had this whole month where I was very hazy 'cause I was smoking too much weed. But anyways, I was chilling, I was like learning how to play music and taking bike rides, and school was so easy and they couldn't hold you accountable for anything, how do you tell a kid to show up? I'd be like, my camera's broken, I can't be on the class, and it's like, what are you gonna fucking go to my house and check my computer camera? And so every kid did that, and they're like, what, camera's broken. Sorry. - And you just, and I would go play the guitar. - Well, you were in class. I was kind of like, what I did in college a bit. - Yeah, 'cause you had, did you have like, 'cause it was easy to cheat. - So easy, are you a cheater? - No, have you ever cheated? Have you ever been cheated on? - I hope not. - That would, I'm big on the golden rule. - Treat others the way you want to be treated. - So, it's the golden rule. - It's the golden rule, so I don't cheat. - And it 'cause I've someone cheated on me, I would be so incredibly hurt. - Have you ever wanted to cheat? - Well, I've never, I've never been in the position to be able to cheat. - You've never had a frickin' relationship? - No, no. - What? Thank you so much. - Yeah. - Tell me about your writing process. - I just like play on the guitar and hum, until I'm like moved, or I'll hear like a line, or like think of a line, and try to build around that. It's kinda just like, you know? - Oh. - Yeah, just kinda like strum in my guitar, and then sometimes it's that. Sometimes it's just like banging on like bunch of synths. Whatever inspires me, and then I just follow it until it's over. - So my favorite song of yours is "Rumates." - So did that start like with the little riff on the guitar? - Yeah, it did. I remember, I played it, I still have it somewhere on my phone. I played it into my like, headphones on my, iPhone, GarageBand, and just like demoed it out, and then I went on a walk, and then I like always forget after I make a riff, I leave, and then I come back, and I like hear it for the first time again, 'cause I don't really remember what it was. And then I was like, oh, this is good. And then I went out to my backyard and wrote the whole song. - You just, it just flipped it. - Just listening to it on my phone. - Very musical family. - Yeah. - Yeah, for real. - Did you have a, because you discovered you wanted to do pursue music when you were like 16. - Yeah. - You taught yourself a guitar. - I don't know, I was really into writing. Something creative, you know. I was just like down to just like be creative, and like, dress like Joseph Gordon Levit from 10 Things I Hate About You and go to high school, and just like be cute, and be into art. - You know I've never seen that movie. - What? - Yeah. - What are you waiting for? - I don't know, I'm a TV guy. - You're TV guy. - I would say I'm more of a movie guy, but I feel uncultured in most things. I'm a very anxious person and it's now manifesting into me being weirdly, weirdly bloated at the most random times. And it's the fact you may work out on daily routines. Wait, I relate to this. Could this actually have to do with my stress levels and how do you recommend daily with stress that impacts your body? Well, I don't, I don't know, but that does happen to me all the time. I'm now realized. - When you're stressed, do you feel bloated? - I think so, yeah. I think I bloat myself 'cause I'm so stressed out all the time 'cause your cortisol levels are so high. - Okay. - I would take like medication for that. - Like de-bloating medication? - No, like I would take like anti-anxiety medication that you go see a psychiatrist. - Okay, yeah, sure. - But you know health care is impossible in this country, so. - Godspeed, girl. - Yeah. (laughs) - I have relationship OCD. So sometimes I spiral thinking that my boyfriend isn't the right person for me. Something terrible is going to happen to him if we stay together, et cetera. Recently, I opened up to my friend about how I was feeling that she told me I should listen to my quote, "gut feeling." And now she keeps trying to convince me to break up with him. She knows I struggle with relationship OCD, but I feel like she doesn't really get it, any advice. We'll see the gut feeling and OCD is very difficult, at least for me because I have a gut feeling constantly, but really it's just anxiety. - Yeah, I'm big on like, I'm big on trusting your instincts. And I don't know this person, so I can't read it like. If I see somewhere, and I know their instincts are right, the best advice you can always give those people is trust your instincts. - But her instincts are saying that if she stays with the guy, then something bad will happen. - Yeah, so that's a distortion. - Okay. - Elaborate. - That's anxiety talking and you're making up for your anxiety with like irrational decisions and like. - But you deep down the. - That's been me, by the way, this whole time, I've just been like really chill about it. - Me too. - Yeah, what's up with that? - I don't know, it happens to me all the time. She just, I just burps, she, she, she. She loves her boyfriend, but she thinks if she stays together with him, something bad's gonna happen. Which, there's no justification to that. That's just a full blown, like. That's a worry that she's having. - So should she leave her boyfriend? 'Cause now her friend is like, you should leave him. - No, your friend's giving you bad advice. If you love him, stay with him. And fight through this feeling and you'll come out the other side. And tell your boyfriend about it and you'll go to therapy about it. 'Cause Jake and I can only do so much in these like 20 seconds. So the sounds like something you really dive into. - I know. - Yeah, what do you think? Exactly what you just said. Well, like if that with me, I totally understand that. She seems like very selfless this girl. Like something bad's gonna happen to her boyfriend and not her. - No, for sure. That's sweet. But she loves him and it's like, what the hell? Don't let like, you have to fight for what you love and like, and you have to fight through the like distortions and stuff to like, you know, and that'll be the best for her life, even though it's like, the quick fix is like break up with him, but that's not gonna solve anything. And then also that's gonna fuel the next distortion in your brain to feel like, okay, well then I'll just get, you know, it's gonna make the evil thing in your mind. I feel like it's gonna, it can just make you do these things. - Right. - And that's like, not how you should live your life. - What music are you listening to these days? - I'm listening to like, really chill music in the last like a week. But I was just sitting there. I think we got home late and I was like, yeah. They said it'd be $2,000 for the dildo late on the bottom of the car. And he was like not really paying attention or something. And he was like, bro, just like given the money or like whatever, it was like just fix the car, it was like whatever. And then I like, go around the car and like, bro, the dildo later.
