Nothing films in LA anymore. Starting to though now. Maybe times of change, but I filmed one, one job in my whole career in LA. You'll never believe who just walks in the backhouse, walks in Ryan. I said, Oh, Nicholas, this is Ryan. Ryan goes, Hey, I go, what are you doing? Like, you don't understand. Like, so he's not supposed to be here. Like he's, do you, are you co-dependent with anyone? Well, you're just hard ones your girlfriend now. Yeah. I mean, that was kind of, sorry. That was kind of supposed to be my close friends. Oh, you did it by accident. Look, I mean, anyone who, you know, follows me, it's all knows that I've had a girlfriend for a few years. But, um, you know, we like to be private, um, which, you know, I think is just easier in this day and age. But yeah, I was, I was doing a shoot, uh, yesterday. And, um, and usually just, you know, post things to my close friends and, and, uh, I know you had a close friends. Well, listen, and let's see how this goes. Okay. Wait, I like, let's see, how this guy, I don't even use close friends. What, what do you use? I like, I did nothing. If I had something private to say, I'll like text it. I, yeah, we start, we start to finish filming at the end, at the end of February. This is a really quick shoot. But, um, quick, quick. Well, I mean, it was just, I, I'm, I'm very fortunate to kind of be in a position now. I'm, I'm kind of going from job to job. So I had to squeeze in a little indie film after that before this. I know. It's so, look at me. Oh, that's cool. It's a narrow indie. What indie was it? It's, um, it's a really, it's a really cool, uh, film called Return of Stanley at Well. It's a, a period piece set in the 1950s, where I play a, the, the air to a massive fortune, whoever and thought was dead. Uh, and then he shows up 15 years later. The guy who has the fortune. Yes. And they don't know if he's a doppelganger. Okay. So what's the sequel of Red, right? And Royal, Royal blue call it tongue twister, isn't it? Red, white and royal blue. To be honest, you call it red, white. Yeah. Okay. Red, white and royal wedding. Is this equal? You guys are getting married? Well, that's the, that's the sort of the, the Easter, you really had to be there for when that first dropped. You know, I, you had to be there. I was there. You were there. You were in it. It's amazing. I rewatched it the other week in prep for this. It's a, it's amazing how, um, how well it did as well. I mean, obviously I know the books were really successful, but it did, it did really well for Amazon. Oh, well, that yes. I feel like, you know, especially since the strike, it's been an interesting time in terms of how movies are getting made and stuff like that. And I think it's almost going back to this old model where, you know, when you, when you had a sort of close relationship with the studio, you know, they trust you and kind of keep, I think that's kind of possibly it. How would you, I love it or pitch that movie to me if I had never seen it before? Well, it's, it's an animated show that, you know, was a toy line that Dolce Lindgren from Rocky fame. I don't know if you saw seen Rocky. Boxer. Boxer. Yeah. Isn't Sylvester Stallone and Rocky? Yes. He is. Rocky, actually. When I tell you, I literally, that was like, as if I had a basketball, and I was facing this way and the hoop was this way, and I went like this. You know, it was like one of the most famous movies of all time. I mean, you could have told me shorts and eager. You could have told me anyone I would have said, right. Wait, what's your favorite movie at all time? Yeah. Devil's Prada. That's a fucking good, good movie. It's a good, you want to wise maybe, or movie? Yeah, of course. Because I would never pull the fuck shit she did in Paris when she dropped her, and I get it. Well, that's the point she lost herself. Okay. So, who do you think the real villain was then? Her boyfriend and her fuck ass friends who would not let her do anything. She wouldn't, she couldn't win. She couldn't win. She'd be like, oh my god, I had the best day of work. My boss loves me. Look how fashionable I am. Well, I'm like, head to toe, like in whatever she wants, showing up late to dinner, cut, chic, whatever. Her friends are like, we've lost you. Okay, so. But, okay, I mean, I hear you, yes, but also it is, you know, it's like, it's difficult when you're in a relationship with someone you feel like they're changing in front of you, right? And you can't, you can't connect, you know, with them anymore. I know it's sad, but she has quit her job over it. No. No. Have you seen the sequel? No, I've been dying too. I love it. Really? So, Alex kind of has to adjust to his, his mood swings, I think, all the time. Did you have fun filming the second one? Yeah, had a good time. I mean, it's the first time I've gone back to shoot anything, you know, done a sequel. So, it's kind of trippy, you know, you usually, you get so used to walking with people and then, you know, not seeing them for a decade. And so, that was really, really nice. Right. And, you know, seeing Uma again. Oh, Uma. Who I've, who I've watched. Every time she pops up in a movie, I'm like, that's Uma Thurman. It's kind of crazy, isn't it? Right? Pulp fiction. What are you doing? I've watched a lot of TV. Like, wait, what TV do you watch? I've, you know, how Christine Aculair is like, name every song that I could say in a song. Yeah. Name TV show. So this is not that impressive. You've just seen, uh, you see, you've seen kind of a regular amount of TV. No, I've seen, yeah. Now you have me wondering what I do in my free time. Yeah. What do you do? I don't know. But today, somebody tried to diagnose me on the internet with what is it? And they, they listed the reasons why they think I, I have it. That girl, you know, symptoms may include sudden weight gain. I respond sudden, uh, uh, uh, weight gain. Go to my comment section. It's literally one of the top comments. She's like, I think you have this on my latest Instagram. What is it? It's a mental disorder? No. Okay. Okay. But we were talking about your, my weight gain, what do you, you were talking about your weight gain? Well, you had to put on some pounds for this role. Again, you were so good at the Transitions that is so impressive wait really yeah, that's so good, but you did now I did I did I I don't know if that came across as rude, but you had to like bulk up. No, yeah, it was pretty rude No, I look that I I had to put a lot of weight on in a quite short period of time and I definitely When you're putting that much size on you as well as muscle you also gained a lot of fat and so I Didn't recognize Myself for a few months at least and you know, you're getting asked to come and do like Public like events and stuff like that and you just don't see yourself, which is kind of trippy So did you bulk and then cut? Yeah, okay, that's that's and you had to do it quickly Yeah, and so it's you're eating a lot. I was eating like 5,000 calories, but yeah, it was not fun. It was it was it was kind of like a sickening eating like okay, wake up okay, wake up and the big omelet breakfast potatoes fruit and then there'd be sort of a snack in between then like big lunch with like a lot of rice a lot of protein then another snack then kind of do the same thing again then another snack and then Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, two lunches. Yeah, you kind of have yeah, well Yeah, did your stomach hurt all the time. Oh, yeah, it was it just wasn't fun It's you're kind of going from eating way too much food to way too little little yeah, and I'm like not a good person when I'm hang I get my hangry person Okay, you know, I said that was also equally difficult your Libra Yeah, I am I do know because I love to be worth that good and but I get that Libra vibe in you What does what does it say about me? It's like you want peace like you're good with whatever your chill like you're happy go lucky Yeah, you're not in the mood to fight. What's your partner? You all right. I do feel like I like justice. I like balance. I care about Different people's perspective on it. I feel like the the way to sort of achieve harmony in life is to kind of Get all viewpoints, but but I also I think I'm quite emotional and Libras can be emotional. Yeah, and but I I can react to it in a sort of passionate way. I think when I feel Yeah, like scorned. Okay. I mean aren't you a Libra? Yeah, that makes sense. Would you say that's true to you? It was a tiny tiny movie called the beat beneath my feet where I I played this like kid who Like has an absentee father and then a disgraced rock god who like fake his own death like moves in next door and he like Black males him into like teaching me it like doesn't really make any sense The beat beneath your feet at exactly. Yeah, it didn't do that well, but I wasn't trying to be an actor and so it was kind of you were it No, I was I was trying to be a rugby player What yeah, I had an active until I left school. Okay so what caused the shift? I hurt myself playing rugby so I couldn't do it anymore and then I got really anxious and depressed and then my friends school were actors and they said well you come audition for a play and I did and then I got scouted and then I was like you like scouted yeah I mean it's it's look compared to like I'm sure you've had people on who are like properly trained and stuff like that like I mean I always felt little chip on my shoulder that I didn't have that but to be honest I kind of came to it in a much more organic way and I think it makes my love for it kind of more more you get less jaded I think when you've kind of you haven't had money drawn from you to like do the thing you love does that make sense so because it happened to you so organically yeah because I wasn't desperate for it like I think there's some of some of these actors like you know whether it's they come from like an acting family or you know they wanted to when they were five years old and then they did it in high school and then they went to a you know acting school whatever and then they come out of the acting school and they've paid all this money for it and they're not getting these job they've committed their whole life already by the time they're like 21 to achieving this thing which you know some of it has to do with talent but a lot of it is just being in the right place at the right time and and people just like noticing you and so I kind of came into it being like like I could care less really like I don't really know what I'm gonna do with my life but like if this works out great and then my love for it kind of started to build and build and build and and now I'd like it's kind of who I am in a lot of ways so wow have you ever acted I have I did my first movie in Portland the summer oh no way yeah what was the movie wishful thinking who's that with Lewis Pullman my my Hawk haven't met her you've never met my no she's great I mean looks extraordinarily like her mom yeah it's crazy quite crazy she's so lovely I the best time how did you find it I love it is that what you want to do yeah did you always want to do it yeah but I love doing this as well but I think I have a little more fun when like I don't know like what why do you think you have more fun just playing another character I think I say being able to like like when I say something stupid on here like I'm saying it as Jake yeah you have to bear all the embarrassment yeah exactly but if I do something as like a character yeah but I mean that's very interesting I feel like a big thing for me with acting is letting go of the ego around being embarrassed after you know taking a swing at something right and it's really interesting because you you had Rachel sent it on yeah I love and you know she was part part my I'd say my probably biggest learning experience was on the film with her when we did bottoms because that was first time I did a really broad comedy all about you worked with kaya and kaya as well oh my god the whole game I'm sure you know all those guys there's such a yeah they're really I owe as well I met I owe like twice so lovely yeah I mean it it stands you in good stead that you don't feel as embarrassed making choices and as another character yeah it's a really good thing but like I remember you know I I read that script and obviously like my character's kind of a small part of that movie but I knew I like desperately really wanted to do it and once I got it then it was like oh I felt this huge responsibility to be funny which is kind of like the worst thing in the world because well you just force it and then I got kind of embarrassed trying to force it but then by the end of the job I think just like kind of letting go and letting go of ego yeah trying things out but the fact that you're already experiencing that means you're you're kind of you're ready for it I guess you think I just I mean I don't know like all the time I have to remind myself to just like not care so much I know it's hard though and especially hard to do that in a when when you make your passion your job as well right because you have to keep earning the response that the the ability to like do the thing that you love I think that's the scary thing you because because nothing is given as an actor and you know industry can turn around tomorrow and say there's a younger better looking more talented version of you like we'll just cast him and said you have to keep earning and proving to people that you have the ability to have these opportunities that can go away at any instant and when your ego comes into it my my waffling but it's a waffle it means chag shit no no I'm listening when your ego comes into it as well I mean it's and you keep you know telling yourself oh I'm not good enough and and and that was really that take was really really shit like I don't know why I did that so embarrassing you kind of go into yourself and then and then you you can't be creative anymore and then it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way did you experience this after red white I mean not red white was like everywhere do you remember everywhere yeah come out 2021 22 I think maybe it was huge huge I always find it hard to remember because it was we didn't really promote it because of the strike the strike yeah I mean I didn't feel that as much with red white because you know I was cast first in the whole process and and sorry not not a flex but but as in I felt like oh you aren't the opportunity and then when other people sort of kind of you know I tested with Taylor and and then Uma came on board it was kind of more I had more time to kind of like ground myself in the experience and be like yes but then you know just the next year then I did that I did a movie with Anne Hathaway called the idea of you and then I did the show called Mary and George with Julianne Moore which is this sort of period piece and so then it was like you know sharing the screen with these I mean two Oscar winners and every day you're kind of going I see in them sort of vaguely where I want to get to like do I have enough ability to do that you're kind of in awe of what they're able to do I mean I still do in a lot of ways you know yeah talking about he-man I mean like when someone says here you are going to play a god the strongest man in the uniform and you have to look like this I mean you kind of go like I'm just a person I don't really know how to embody a sort of larger than life character but I mean I don't know it like is there any actor that you think you've come across to you like that person is entirely confident and authentic in every moment that they are you have who I really interesting yeah I feel like that's why he went so much but do you think he spent a long time getting to that place you think he was always that way I have you seen the videos of him in school yeah with doing the rap rap stuff he's been so himself forever yeah I think he's worked incredibly hard yeah he's incredibly talented yeah but I think the reason people gravitate towards him so much is because like he's him but you can I mean sure but also people evolve and so you're always you in different ways I mean like you can even look in in terms of his like clothing like how he started a few years ago tell you know yeah you can't say necessarily one is like more authentic than the other but yeah I don't know I think you're kind of just like forced to change as well but that's interesting I can I can definitely see I think he was I mean I loved Marty Supreme and I thought also the way he promote the movie was like really it entirely someone who knew who they were and what they wanted to achieve that of right what was smart about that was that was like the whole bit of the movie yeah did you was that your favorite movie what was your favorite movie of the movie this year was Train Dreams oh really yeah you know I'd I'd love Joel Edgerton so I really want to see it but that's the one I haven't seen it was really moving what else did you like I liked Train Dreams I liked I liked him net which is crazy because I hate period pieces really what do you hate about it hate hate hate what do you hate about it my thing with them is I just don't know what you're saying so like I can't and it's like okay but what if it what if it's what if it's what if it's like a period thing with like modern like a Bridgerton like with modern language oh see you're like you mean a cell phone you're inch give me a cell phone wait but so okay so what so you won't watch something that like Robert Egger's does for example like Nosferatu now I saw Nosferatu but he like famously won't he doesn't want to shoot anything that has a cell phone in it yeah I didn't understand anything that was going on in the movie at all ever but you got the vibes of the movie right you could do enjoy it just that really it was like a vampire but Train Dreams is kind of period isn't it very much so so you're just the noxie more on really yeah I just yeah I like Train Dreams because I - I got it, I was like, okay, understand this. And it made me cry at the end, and I was like, - Did you make you, did you not think you were gonna get it? So it made you feel quite like. - No, my dad told me how much he loved it, and I was like, oh my God, well, if he likes it, then I'll probably like it. - I actually just started watching euphoria. - I knew you were, by the way, and I knew you were about to say euphoria. - Because it's just all over, yeah. I feel like I've seen every clip on TikTok. - Have you seen season one, or you just started for the first time ever? - I, no, just for the first time. - Well, no, that's not true. I watched like half of season one a while ago, and then just thought, oh, it's really like quite dark, and what happens in this high school. This is like no high school I've ever known. And then, and then recently just started finished it, and then started watching the second season, and out the third season. - I mean, by the way, like I always knew, Zinday was like, great, but she's like. - Incredible. - I was like, really floored by how great she is, as Sydney Sweeney as well. - Season two is great. You just started season two. - No, I finished it. I'm on season three, I'm up to date. I haven't seen the recent recent. - I haven't seen the recent one either. You know who I thought was so amazing? Was that the stripper that Rue sent to rehab? - Oh my God, she was so good. - She was so good. She was so good. - Just like wild energy. - And then she brought her back. - Well, does she die? I mean, you know, you mentioned Timothy and obviously, you know, he's had the issue with the whole, the ballet opera thing, which by the way, I went to the ballet for the first time the other day. And it was amazing. I have to say, like, ballerinas are incredible. And I had a great time. But, you know, he's someone obviously, the way social media works, like everyone has a sort of, if just usually if you're doing well, people will have a sort of split opinion on you. But someone like Ryan Gosling, I feel like, he's very hard to, like everyone loves him. - Yeah. - He's some days kind of the same way, I guess. - I'm always sat for Jennifer Lawrence. - Oh, she's great, isn't she? - I'm always sat for her. - Did you see "Dime I Love?" - I did. - It was heavy. - I'm sat for Jennifer Lawrence. I think her comedic timing is like, some of the best in the game. - I'm surprised she hasn't done more comedy. - I know. Do you see "No Hard Feelings" the best movie ever? - Do you think the, do you think that she kind of ushered in this, like, sense of, like, relatability? Because, you know, you do notice, like, there's a lot of these, like, a list is now who are, like, trying to be relatable, and words, like, you know, they'll have their own TikTok or whatever, and it's like, she kind of, I mean, I remember she got really slammed for, like, people who thought she was trying too hard, but. - You know, who actually ushered that in first was Ann Hathaway. Do you remember that? She, there was, like, a fucking hate train on her, and I never got it, 'cause I love Ann Hathaway, and I know you've worked with her. - Yeah. - But she was pretty relatable. - Yeah. - But yeah, I guess Jennifer Lawrence really ushered in that, like. - Well, I mean, look, they're so different. I mean, I, you know, obviously, Annie and I talked about this. But that was hard. That was very, like, strange and harsh. Like, someone winning the sort of highest award there is in the industry, and then people kind of really switching off. I think that reality is she's like a theater kid. You know, she's really intelligent. She's really, I don't know, bright, and people don't like that, I think, a lot at the time. It's kind of the same thing with Jennifer Lawrence, don't think, she was like, she had a brightness. How do you, how do you navigate it? Do you see people that you interview, like, consistently trying to navigate it as well, like, how much of themselves to share whilst also kind of, 'cause it's kind of a poison chalice. - Kind of, there's certain people that will come on and be more reserved. - Yeah, but look, and I don't mean like from you, like, you're putting this expectation on them. I mean, sort of the, the world at large is sort of putting this expectation on them. And it's, you know, we're all on our journey to sort of be, you know, find our sort of most authentic self, but I think it's really hard to do. - I've struggled with it recently. Like, I think about what I say more. And I used to just, like, kind of rip it, and like, say whatever I wanted, and like, be myself and cut you off and do whatever. And like, but now that people are, like, - You still cut people off? - Yes, but if you think this is bad, go, like, you have no idea how bad I used to be. - It's like, it's, it's, it's some, well, it's just very, I think it's interesting for you because, you know, your, I say, your journey is kind of much more uncharted, this sort of. So what were you doing before? Were you doing, like, social media before? - I was working at a record label. - Oh, wow, okay. - For this guy named Zach. - Okay. - Zach is now my manager. - Okay. - So it's like, it very much all stayed in the family. - Did you go from feeling just like a regular sort of person to, oh, now I have to, like, put out this version in myself, I have to sort of put out of. - Yeah, I think I felt that way starting when I started doing tour. - Oh, you've toured? - I toured this. - And that's when I was like, oh, people are paying to see me put on a show right now. You can't, like, there's not, like, like, this used to be on YouTube, it's not on YouTube anymore, it's on Netflix, but when it was on YouTube, it was like, I felt like I could kind of say and do whatever I wanted and be whatever mood I wanted to be in because people were clicking on that on their own free volition. But when they bought tickets to a show and they like paid money, I was like, oh, there, I have to put on a good show. Like, I can't have someone leave here being, like, I wasn't entertained. - But did you still feel like it was you? - Yeah. - You won't put it on-- - I was able to, I learned how to make it me. I'll never forget it. I was about to go on stage and I think it was. He was Vancouver. Was it Toronto or Vancouver? Which was the first Canada we went to? - Toronto. - Toronto, I was so hungover. Like, so hungover, I'd never been hungover for a show before 'cause I wasn't a great game. I was so hungover 'cause we had New York the night before. And I just like really leaned into the fact that I was hungover and it worked really well and was one of my best shows and I was like, oh, so like. - Well, we were talking about relatability. - Yeah, it's hard. It's like, it's hard 'cause people will be like, oh, you're so relatable, you're so authentic. And then they'll want you to market it. And it's like, you can't market that. That's not how that works. - Yeah, and it's also like kind of a pressure. - And then they'll want you to market it. And then you'll do something that is relatable and authentic and they'll be like, well, no, you can't do that. - Do you think actors can be relatable at a certain level? - Yeah, but the audience doesn't let them. - Really? - You're not allowed to be because everything you guys say and do is dissected on a level that a lot of other public figures are not. - Everything. - It's really interesting. I was, I was, I have a show in development and we were talking about that. How I wanted to be in like the acting world and this. And they're like, it's so funny. You say that 'cause you're in a world right now where you can get away with saying a lot more and you want to be kind of like muzzled. And I don't think you're gonna like feeling muzzled. Do you ever feel muzzled? - Truthfully, I'm quite a, I'm quite a candid person, I think I wear my heart and my sleeve and I really have, I feel very compelled to be honest. I think definitely that, I do think that there are things, no matter what I say, you know, people will disagree with. We kind of have lost a little bit of, I'm interested in nuance, maybe that's the kind of the Libra thing, I don't know. And I just, I think that's the thing that I really struggle with is I want to have like really honest conversations. I wouldn't say if you're a muzzle tool. I kind of choose to like not share a lot about myself and I think that that's not really like a, it was kind of self-muzzling in a way. But I, I'm also just like, you know, when I ask you like, you know, can actors really be relatable? I mean, like do people really want to hear like what actors have to say for themselves? I do, because actors are like kind of the face of pop culture in a sense, actors and singers. And pop culture can be used as like a gateway, I feel like for a lot of people to comment on like socio economic issues without having to talk about politics, they can just kind of use the actors and the singers as like the front facing man. Oh my god, I am so smart. I'm like freak, are you hearing me right now? I was in awe. Are you hearing me right now? No, I'm literally talking at every word. I'm like thinking really hard about the next word. But I don't you agree, though, that like people are like, everyone's freaking out about Timothy Shilman and the ballet thing, but it's like, is that really what you're mad about? Do you think people just need to be mad at something in general? Sometimes, but I think like this country is like in such a shit hole of shit holes that like people are, yes, people do want to be angry about something, but like people are more angry than usual. I've been angry about this fucking cold that I've had. Okay. I'm therapist because I did this like really intense movie and was completely healthy for all of it. And literally the day before I came here to do like the biggest press tour of my career, I like started feeling. Well, why? Because your body was running on like adrenaline. Yeah. And then you had one brief moment where you were like, and then your body was like, okay, great. But I tried to tell myself I was like, this is how it's just how it has to be. I shouldn't do that. Well, no, your body listen, like your mind. Yeah. But now what do I do? Because I got this premiere later. Yeah, I'm a little under the weather. Like, but you don't sound it. Well, I am. So like, so like when I was really sick, my sinuses hurt so am I deep hurt because my sinuses hurt and everything hurt. And so the steroid basically de-inflammizes you. Are you saying that you think I look quite inflamed? No, but you're telling me you feel sick. I'm like, great. You should get a steroid shot. So why is it so hot in here?
