In a speech to the gathering, President Trump said he faces a choice on whether to make a deal with Iran or annihilate the Islamic Republic. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to do it. It's a greatness, potential greatness, or aboteration. In one case it's aboteration, and the other alternative is potential greatness. Later Trump said US officials had a very productive meeting with Iranian representatives, and he said another meeting is scheduled for the very near future. Axel's reports today's meeting included US envoys Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner, and Iran's foreign minister Abbas Rachi. Here is Bloomberg's Becca Wasser. It was certainly a driving force in the US session, where both the NASDAQ composite and the NASDAQ 100 closed at fresh record highs. Chip stocks climbed for a sixth straight session. We had the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index up 2%. There was weakness, though, among some of the big banks, the KBW Bank index down 2.4%. Now, some of that weakness, interestingly, was tied to breakthroughs in AI assistance, like Metas Muse. These agents have shown the potential to disrupt businesses that benefit from so-called "consumer inertia." That's the tendency to keep buying something out of habit, even when better alternatives exist. Many insurance companies and online travel agencies fall into that category. Venezuela's opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, tried three times in the past 24 hours to return home, but she was unable to complete her journey. We were told Machado sought to travel from Panama to Venezuela by different routes. Now, these attempts came as acting President Delci Rodriguez was in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, where she met with President Trump. Machado is Venezuela's most popular politician, and the failure to return underscores the obstacles Machado faces as she seeks a role in the U.S.-backed political transition after the capture of Nicolas Maduro back in January. President Trump signed a security deal with Denmark and Greenland to end a bitter dispute over the Arctic island. This agreement gives the U.S. permanent control over security and all other needs of the territory, and it leaves the island under Danish sovereignty. President Trump said the U.S. will begin building two major military bases on the island. Anthropic CEO Dario Amadei and open AI chief Sam Altman are planning to hold a virtual briefing with the U.N. Security Council tomorrow on the future of AI. Today, President Trump dismissed calls for an international agreement to regulate artificial intelligence. Despite warnings, Trump said the U.S. will be able to mitigate any risk. The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a global scheme to control for the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now here and after officially called super intelligence. But AI pioneer Feifei Lee called for more oversight by independent and public sector entities. Speaking to Bloomberg, Lee said safety assessments of increasingly capable AI systems should not be left solely to the companies developing them. We need to understand and keep this technology continue to develop this technology in a robust ecosystem where there is public sector, there is open source, there is close source, there is collaboration with academia, with government, with civil society. It is very, very important that we come together as a ecosystem and do this right. That is world lab CEO Feifei Lee. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takieichi spoke to the U.N. General Assembly this evening and she called on the U.N. to remove from its charter references to both Japan and Germany as enemy states. Here is Takieichi speaking through a translator.
