The episode covers the aftermath of the end of the old CBA in North America, highlighting a surge of high-value contract signings across the NHL. Key deals featuring players like Cutter Gauthier, Ryan Leonard, and Luke Evangelista spark discussions about team strategy, player valuation, and the increasing difficulty of comparing contracts due to the new cap structure. The hosts emphasize the importance of prospect games as a tool for assessing future team performance. A central point of controversy is the Canadiens’ signing of Chris Crider, which has ignited fierce fan debates between Montreal and other teams over loyalty, history, and identity. The discussion also includes sharp critiques of Ed Sheeran’s artistic and political approach, with hosts calling it inoffensive and uninspired. Meanwhile, a strong fan narrative emerges around Jeff Skinner’s European debut, celebrated for its flair and cultural significance. The episode blends serious hockey analysis with humor, including satirical takes on fan behavior, obscure player comparisons, and sports betting. It concludes with a promotional segment for Prize Picks, a football betting app, tying in with the hosts’ broader entertainment brand, and reaffirms the trio’s commitment to in-depth, engaging sports content.
Thank you for watching.
It is Wednesday, September 16th, new CBA day in the United States and Canada.
And this is a show called What Chaos from the Sports Interaction Studios in Boston, Massachusetts.
My name is David Bean. I sit beside Pete Blackburn.
And holding it down in the city of champs is Sean DePaz.
Happy new CBA, boys.
I'm very excited about it.
Boy, the end of this CBA's 24-hour stream is going to go bonkers.
Yeah, because it's going to be a lockout.
We're going to live stream until the lockout.
The lockout's end.
That would be horrible, but if you go super long on YouTube, don't you just get bucks?
I feel like we would have to do it on Twitch, because that's when they do the subathons that last 30 days.
Oh, shit.
We could just do the Tim Heidecker shit, who's the comedian, Joe Rogan.
When he did the Joe Rogan show, and it was just 16 hours long.
We could just do it on Twitch, because that's when they do the subathons that last 30 days.
That's what a stadium stage performance of Vineyard Nights would look like.
We did it back in the day, and it would be very Backstreet Boys-y.
A lot of string hits.
Those like, bang, bang, bang.
And the choreography would be amazing, but alas, I will not do it for Ed Sheeran, Pete is considering.
Can I just say, I'm very conflicted about the Ed Sheeran thing that's happening right now.
Politics aside, nothing about that I want to get into.
Rare for you, but yep.
Everybody knows it's on tape.
I didn't know who Netanyahu was like two months ago.
That's my bad.
No, the Ed Sheeran thing, I'm very conflicted on, because going back to the brunch days,
I was saying, yo, Ed Sheeran, stop being so inoffensive.
Like, I feel about Ed Sheeran the way that you feel about Noah Kahn,
except that Noah Kahn is at least presenting an interesting off-the-field persona.
Oh, yeah, off-the-field Noah Kahn, that's my guy.
And Ed Sheeran gives us nothing.
Across the board, which I think, like, to a certain degree is by design.
I think that Ed Sheeran's probably a good hang.
I think it's been thrown into question whether or not he's a good friend.
Yeah.
But just, like, I'm kind of sick of Ed Sheeran wasting his talent on being the most
intentionally inoffensive person in the world, both musically and now in the political sphere.
But on the other hand, I'm torn that now Ellie Goulding gets to take a victory lap,
which, bringing it all the way back to the brunch days, my interaction with Ellie Goulding was Ed Sheeran-related,
and I feel like I won that, and now she's coming back for seconds.
I feel like people celebrating Ellie Goulding cheating on Ed Sheeran is a good example of maybe we've misused
the original intent of the internet a little bit.
I don't know what their deal was.
Don't is still a banger.
Like, that doesn't change.
Don't is still incredible.
But to your point, like. Ed Sheeran lost me when he made Bad Habits, where I was like, oh, so you are trying to
do what is just going to kind of melt into the rest of everything else.
That shit, his vocal sounds so small and so bad.
Give the fucking compression a rest, okay?
It's gonna, the thing's gonna die and the computer's gonna burst into flames.
I thought he was doing the John Mayer thing where it's like, I will play the pop game
and appease the ladies.
One for me.
One for them.
Yeah, I'll appease the label for the first five years, first two albums in my career,
and then I'm gonna do whatever weird, cool shit that I want to do.
And then he just kept doing the same shit that he was doing forever.
I will get a little political for one second.
When Same Love by Macklemore came out, I know that everyone's like, well, this sucks.
Now I gotta like Macklemore.
And it's like, you don't have to, you don't know these people.
But when Same Love by Macklemore came out, it was. Pretty unheard of for a pop star and especially a burgeoning pop star who was gaining street
cred to be like, let me talk to you about some gay shit for a little bit.
I know that that song has aged kind of oddly because it's strange to. Let me talk to you about some gay shit, but I'm not gay.
But I'm not gay.
And pop star obviously did him no favors by mocking the shit out of that song like three
years later once everything was legal to be like, yeah, I'm a rapper and I'm not gay.
But the intention I will always think was good with that song.
So Macklemore, a tip of the cap to you there.
Sean, do you have any thoughts on Ed Sheeran's popularity and his social status right now?
Ed Sheeran's not a guy I thought a whole lot about.
I think inoffensive prior to the last few days was pretty good way to put it.
Now I think that guy's a coward.
Oh, I mean, he's definitely a coward.
I mean, respectfully.
You listen to that shit and you're like, you didn't think that guy was like a coward?
Do you think that guy's out getting in fights?
Becoming offensive through your dedication to being inoffensive is quite the accomplishment.
Yeah.
I mean, if you're trying to be. I mean, one of our mandates, whatever, modus operandi is don't be an asshole on purpose.
Obviously, through life, you're going to make mistakes and you're going to ruffle feathers
and everything.
Like, don't be an asshole on purpose.
Also, don't like go so out of your way to be like, I don't want to upset anybody that
nobody's happy with you.
Correct.
Like, is anybody right now pumped with Ed Sheeran?
We don't have to talk about Ed Sheeran a lot.
We can talk about the actual report.
Yeah.
Do you have breaking news on Ed Sheeran?
I was going to say, this is a different music thing that I wanted to bring up.
Drake and Don Tolliver released their. This guy won't stop. Choosing Texas remix.
Guy won't stop with the Choosing Texas remix shit.
Nobody gives a shit, Sean.
They released it.
No!
But it's not. Ella Langley's not in it at all.
It's like a completely different song, basically, where they just use like the Choosing Texas
kind of. Like, you can tell that it's inspired.
Shit's kind of fire.
Don Tolliver kind of flows on that.
I bet it is.
Choosing Texas is a good song.
I don't care about it.
I don't care about Ella Langley.
I do. Again, I've watched interviews with Ella Langley and I'm like, everyone's getting mad about
what she. Like, this is like a great. Really big example of like. Why do you. Saying why do you care is really annoying, but like, I don't think we should care about
whether this person has publicly endorsed whatever.
Like, I really don't care about Ella Langley.
With all due respect to Ella Langley.
Okay.
Now that that has all been addressed, Pete, again, still mulling whether or not he's going
to do a DJ set.
I've told him he's not allowed to play any of my music.
He's pushing back against it.
He's going to do exclusively my music.
Identify as me and then walk off.
It's going to be brutal.
It's a good plan.
Yeah.
And the audience is going to hate it too.
It's going to be bad for everybody.
Chad Finn, Boston Globe, Scoops Finn has a report that we are going to a very, very
awesome network for this season that we are going to The Ringer.
We. That's an exciting sounding report.
And we're going to talk about all of that soon.
Okay?
So bear with us for now.
Going to hit you with a few things.
One, Pete is not getting a new chair.
Two, our schedule and YouTube presence is going to be the same.
And three, this season is going to be fucking awesome.
And we're very excited that you are here with us.
And most importantly, it's going to be three of us.
It's going to be the three of us.
Oh, yeah.
Sean's not going anywhere.
Oh, yeah.
Chad didn't name Sean in that report.
Yeah.
And it was like, what does this mean?
What the fuck, Sean?
What?
I mean, I'm not from you guys, but I mean, it's not What Chaos hosted by DJ Bean, Pete
Blackburn, and Sean DePaz.
Yeah, but we're trying to have a picture day soon.
And it's going to be pictures of the three of us.
That is true.
That is true.
Somebody asked me the other day, they were like, why is Pete listed first as the host
of What Chaos?
And I was like, I think he made the social media.
Account.
I think that it was that that was his job.
I said, I'm not making that.
I don't know.
You guys have never made me feel like one like, like I wasn't one third, but I, you
know, the outside doesn't if they don't watch the show, they don't get it.
Oh, they fucking every text I've gotten has been like, hey, I don't have Peter Sean's
number, which is like, I would not have texted you.
I would have texted one of those two, but please tell them congratulations on everything.
But again, we're going to get into that soon.
It's going to be very.
but there is so much shit going on
going on today what is it pete today on the show let us discuss nothing but respect for my
deadline fuck july 1st yeah oh fuck it right here go birds go birds fuck july 1st you don't mean
shit to me anymore september 15th my new best friend uh jeff's league jeff skinner playing
hockey he's a trailblazer he's playing hockey before anybody else in the goddamn nhl these days
and boy he's tearing it up my man is swiss max and we will hit that later uh speaking of maxing
max venute yes gonna join the show we have canadians thoughts we have chris crider thoughts
we only have one thought about uh people related to the canadians it's got to be max and finally
held to go not yeah that one's a little bit of a that i i kind of dave max there but you know what
go to camp not yeah uh and hell to go is go to hell backwards and mike wilbon famously got his
ass so we're gonna hit all those things plus greg waschinski did his superstar player poll
on espn and we're also going to be joined by uh denver outlaws defender uh mike manley who
mogs the fuck out of me mustache wise i think he mogs all of us in various ways but amazing hang
great conversation ahead of the pll championship against philadelphia but first let us discuss
the end of the last cba meant teams rushing to sign contracts while they could still get
eight-year extensions as the avalanche did with kale mccarr and to structure it the way bonus
wise is still allowable under the old cba some big ones that got done ahead of the deadline
cutter gautier six by thirteen and a half drake batherson eight by ten point five and a half
eight by ten point seven five million dollars ryan leonard eight by ten and a half justin sordiff
eight by six times 3.5 million and luke evangelista either this morning or last night it was last
night five times 7.25 million dollars with the devils i think the ones that stand out most are
gautier leonard and sort of because those are second contracts the bruins had gotten out ahead
of this last week donnie sweeney always a trailblazer donnie sweeney always a trailblazer
always a trailblazer razor yep frazier minton seven times i think 7.4 and once that happened
everybody who had a player coming up on a second contract was like oh i see what you did there
absolutely do this and there's been some reaction and confusion over the really the aav on these and
i think that nick alberga said it best like i want to freak out about this but i also have to admit
that i have not recalibrated my brain to the new cba so when you do see like gautier six times six
thirteen and a half million dollars i think that we all saw that as like oh i thought he was going
to do like five times 15 i thought that was going to be even crazier so good on the ducks kind of
there but like with ryan leonard where you're like oh ten and a half million dollars for a guy with
46 career points that's kind of crazy but i look at all these deals as basically like players that
we think are good and yeah i think that's kind of crazy i think that's kind of crazy i think that's
as soon as they get better because they're 21 22 23 24 years old as soon as they get better we're
going to go oh that's an awesome contract yeah right it's it's banking on the production that
you're going to get and it's making bets and i think that a lot of these bets are really good
ones i saw a lot of people saying like ryan leonard only had 44 points last year and he's
getting ten and a half million yes ten and a half million dollars is kind of like the going rate for
somebody that you envision is going to be in your top six for the next seven years and ryan leonard
was kind of having a breakout party last year make that bet right now i think it's very smart
yeah i mean how much did um how much did alex tuck get with the capitals was he ten and a half
something like that yeah he's what 31 so like which eight-year deal would you rather have
honestly going into two years from now because leonard still has one more year on his contract
basically uh i was talking to shane about it last night and she was very she was high on a lot of
and i was like with where the cap is going it's just a bunch of trent frederick contracts for
players we think are better than trent frederick like going eight years all of them that you're
like damn that's kind of confusing but they're all better by a lot we are living in a world where
literally every cap hit is confusing because there is not a worse time to be alive making
contract comparables than today given the
pre's off the mcdavid the um who else we want to throw in there leo carlson yeah just and then the
new the new cap structure the rising cap all of it makes for a horrible time to compare any contract
to another contract that was signed at a different time yeah that's why we are really against that we
did this a couple of weeks ago with some of these big con oh no we did it with kale mccarr we were
like okay you don't like 20.4 million dollars for kale mccarr we're not comparing it to zach
warrensky's current contract or we're not comparing it to zach warrensky's current contract or we're
not comparing it to zach warrensky's current contract or we're not comparing it to zach warrensky's
we are comparing it to the other contracts that got signed this summer and aside from that one
dude who is my fucking hero who said that darren radish and what was it like 8.8 million dollars
i'd rather have darren radish on his deal than kale mccarr on his deal my new biggest thing i've
been hammering hammering this on the patreon episodes and i've been hammering it on this show
like my new biggest thing is something i disagree with that i know isn't forced like it happens a
like sean when sean was like the ducks shouldn't match on leo carlson i was like oh no way dude but
fuck yeah a person thinking that now we can have fun i i get it like i i get being a fan of
independent thinking in a world where there's so much hive mind yes but i think that you have to
work on your sorting pile of independent thinking derogatory versus steering yeah how do you feel
about me throwing that darren radish kale mccarr take in with uh your very
knowledgeable hockey opinions i mean i will say that uh part of the reason that i thought you
were gonna have to uh you shouldn't match on carlson because you weren't going to be able to
pay ota and like i thought like i agreed with you that i thought goatee was going to be making more
so i guess i'm giving pat verbie credit for figuring that out a little bit all's well that
ends well you've got those two players for 30 plus million dollars that part of it i don't i don't
think is bad like if you put it together and you say
leo carlson and cutter goatee for the next seven years at coming out math mathematic mathematician
wise mathematically mathematically that's the word uh 16 million dollars a piece yeah hell yeah
yeah but but i don't think we need to give credit to the ducks for pissing in the room
and then escaping the room without slipping in their own piss pete is back has done back to back
really good gone to the bathroom in the room and then i don't think we need to give credit to the
thing what was the uh oh mcdavid and uh like you wanted mike babcock you can't shit on the floor
and then walk out of it and say hey i got shit on what did you say no no everybody was talking about
how uh the oilers like mcdavid and dry settle stepped in it with their comments after they
showed up to camp and it's like yeah the oilers and mcdavid and dry settle that leadership group
shit all over the room there was no way they were going to escape that once showing up to work and
escape the room without stepping in shit shout out veto junior everybody uh what i wanted to say
originally um was that you mentioned all those contrasts and you didn't even bring up the big
umlaut which is what i'm calling noah oslin now oh yes i love that yeah 6.6 yes are you shitting
me that makes me so happy i think that guy's gonna fucking i think he already does rock you
know who like started this fake rap shit like the with these contracts kevin adams
kevin adams
he did the owen power one in 2023 i or i mean i i associate it with gmba with uh with
shit who's our guy that uh dylan gunther gunther dylan gunther where he was like hi
we haven't met here's an eight-year extension and it ended up being and we all knew we were
like this is gonna be like it what i just said before like we think this kid's good if he gets
better then it's gonna be an unbelievable deal and it is an unbelievable deal but you know who's
pissed today samuelson and he did it with owen power so once again advantage don sweeney because
kevin adams zach benson is zach benson we get 7.5 the sabers i don't know if they're gonna be good
but the contracts are awesome you know who's pissed today or i i wonder if the stance has
changed but when we talked nikita zadorov two years ago uh he was pissed that that players
who haven't accomplished shit in the nhl are getting the bag and i know that he's gonna get
that he wasn't alone in thinking that i wonder if like veteran players have outgrown the well what
the fuck is that guy done to deserve that deal because now they're all getting them that's just
the league that we that we live in right it's like it's not my fault your contract isn't up right now
yeah you're right like decent hockey players or even players we don't know are decent yet
are the new nfl quarterbacks where like the next one that is up is going to get a number you
couldn't comprehend and then in five minutes that's going to be a good deal and then in five minutes
that's going to be a deal and then another quarterback will be up and they will get a
number that you can't comprehend it's just going to blow your mentality time and again
Again, some teams that did not get their guys done.
Matt Poitras only got a one-year deal, Pete.
How do you feel about that?
But he's going to be ready for camp.
Congratulations to the Providence Bruins.
We did get a Stan Bowman.
Don't want to talk about his contract,
but Matt Savoy is a really good young player, quote, today.
Not thrilled about that.
That one had extend for the Frazier-Mitten thing written all over it.
But you also don't know what these agents,
like some of them might do what Carlson's guy, Matt Cater, did,
which was, hey, you are right for wanting to sign my guy right now.
So it's going to be no,
and then I'm going to blow your mentality come next year
once that offer sheet comes in.
But yeah, a lot of players getting big bucks, big, big bucks.
Luke Evangelista, five times 7.25 million.
Do you think that the Preds were a little,
and he had a career of 56 points last year
for the Preds.
Do you think that they were a little like shell-shocked
given some of their contracts where they were like,
we can't have another overpay?
I think it's maybe partly that,
but I also think that they looked at the return
on what they could get for him and be like,
yeah, he doesn't really fit in with where we're at right now.
He's so much better of a fit with New Jersey.
And so like, I'm not going to comment on where I stand on that deal right now.
Conditional first and a second, man.
They're making a bet.
And I've just said that like a lot of these bets are good bets to make.
I still think jury's kind of out on Luke Evangelista,
but I think his ceiling is higher with New Jersey
than it was ever with Nashville.
Yeah, I will agree on that.
We're going to quickly, by the way,
speaking of Matt Poitras, young players,
we're going to do,
we're going to make this a long segment with video elements and everything,
but there's so much to do today
that we're not going to be able to get to it.
We talked, I think on the Patreon episode about like the level,
the level of junkie that it takes to watch and consume
and care about these prospect games
that have been played the last few days.
Hand up with the new CBA.
These prospect games are important
and you can glean from watching them
whether guys are good or not
and whether or not your team will be good this season.
So we're just going to do a quick little zip around the league.
Sean, stop making a face.
We're going to just like quick little zip around the league
and see what's been going on
in these prospect games.
Oh, actually.
Oh, well, that's Quinn Hudson
and I coward just fucking dominated.
There's they.
Oh, James Higgins,
three goals in one game and a fourth in another.
Or he had four goals,
four in one game or one game,
four in one game.
OK, let's see what's going on with the Sabres.
That that James Higgins game was against the Sabres.
So, Sean, how you feel about this season?
Sean, you might want to go out and get Connor.
Hello, Buck, pal.
Your team is drowning for our prospect game.
I knew this was good.
I was like, what is happening here?
I didn't I did not know where that was going at all.
Yeah, the Sabres are going to suck, man.
I don't know what to tell you.
Those games matter.
I did.
I tell you what.
I was like the, you know, in draft day.
Shut out Dennis Leary when they're watching Dennis Leary.
Yeah, he just followed a new follower of what chaos?
Yeah, where they're watching the tape on Bo Callaghan.
And he just, like, throws the ball to the end zone and the prison warden from prison break is like, who can't teach that?
That's pure Roethlisberger.
I did watch a little bit of the prospect game and saw like Howard do a couple of things and I was like, they have two Zach Hyman's right now that is pure Zach Hyman.
So if your team has a prospect game, which might be wrapped up, we don't care about them.
Watch it.
Because it is important.
And anything that happens in them tells you what the season will hold for your team.
Yes.
Chat says James Higgins, no matter what.
Okay.
We've got, speaking of what, we've got a couple of what are we looking at here?
Nice.
Okay.
Shout out to our friends from PR Open Ice with this little graphic.
Matthew Schaefer had some words for the Islanders doubters this coming season.
The quote is via Stefan Rosner.
Quote, I love when the haters hate.
That is Matthew Schaefer on people doubting the Islanders this season.
I will invoke Tim Heidecker a second time this episode when I say, huh?
Huh?
Someone's doubting the Islanders.
That was my take.
That was absolutely my take.
There's a difference between hate and not giving a shit.
I wouldn't even say that people don't give a shit.
If you don't give a shit about the Islanders, that's a skill issue, brother.
But I mean,
fair.
I don't know like how much there is to doubt.
Yeah.
I'm in on the Islanders as much as one can be.
I don't think that they're going to just like, just, you know what?
I'll give the Islanders.
I'll give the Islanders 2024, 25 Philadelphia Flyers treatment.
Do you remember what that was?
No.
I will allow them.
I can allow for them finishing anywhere in the Metropolitan Division.
So if you tell me,
they're going to finish first, sweet.
Tell me they're going to finish second.
I'm going to say, Oh, hell yeah.
It's a nice season.
Tell me they're going to finish last.
I'm going to say the penguins did it again.
What the fuck?
They got so much worse.
I got to, I got to amend that.
They, they can't be the worst team in New York.
They can't finish worse than the Rangers.
I don't know.
Rangers did some, didn't, didn't Rangers get Ellie?
Who?
Ellie Tolvanen?
Sick.
And if they did, I've already forgotten about it.
I mean, I, the Rangers, I don't know.
Rangers should be better maybe than last year,
but they should be absolutely probably the worst team in the Metro.
They lost Jonathan quick.
Well, no, technically they didn't.
Is he a coach?
He's a, he's in there like development program or something.
Okay.
He's playing the preseason games.
Oh, that's what you mean?
No, he's actually, he's an employee of the New York Rangers.
Okay.
I'm glad that we all had the same reaction and usually a hand up.
I did not do this.
When I see a pull,
I almost always make sure I read the whole story and see if maybe things have
gotten taken out of context.
I did not do that here.
So I am certainly allowing for the possibility that Matthew Schaefer is not
under the impression that everyone's like, you're, you know,
what expect whatever the expectations are for you guys.
Never going to happen.
Can't confirm.
They have Ellie Tolvanen.
Hell yeah.
Is it?
I guess.
Do we not know his name?
That, that makes it even worse.
If I'm like, Hey, they got this.
They got this guy.
And I don't know how to say it.
I think it's Ellie.
Okay.
Sure.
I, or there is somebody in the league who is spelt like E E L I and it's
pronounced Ellie.
Okay.
Take it to the bank.
Not the, I'm sure it's that player bank, but one of the, there is an Ellie.
And I think it's, yeah, it's L Ellie, like emphasis on the first, first
syllable there.
Okay.
Ellie Tolvanen.
They have an Ellie Tolvanen.
Get behind me, Ellie.
Uh, and then here's the, what are we looking at?
Deering, which is that Jeff Skinner, who is now with EHC BL Ben is I'm sure
everybody knows, uh, has all of his garb on.
And I saw some stuff that was like, Oh yeah, real cool.
Make fun of Jeff Skinner.
Cause he's cause like European jerseys have all this shit on it.
Who's don't make fun of Jeff Skinner.
Who's making fun of Jeff Skinner.
I'm looking at that and I'm like, get me that Jersey.
I, I made fun of Jeff Skinner.
I was assuming I was like, this is probably something that Pete started
online.
It's like, if a Jersey looks like that, we get to make fun of it, regardless
of the context in which it exists.
I'm glad that European hockey has fewer TV timeouts.
I'm glad that the tickets are really cheap.
I'm glad that no water breaks.
People are not as offended as I am, uh, about those jerseys, but those are
trash brother.
You can't make your jerseys billboards and not expect me to make fun of them.
Can you close your eyes?
Picture a man.
Okay.
This man just is.
Sean, he's got on some distressed jeans and he has on the Jeff Skinner E HL, uh,
EHC BL Ben Jersey.
Okay.
Does he look awesome?
Well, it's Sean.
So that's an unfair starting point.
Uh, but no, I was going to say, thank you.
Please be honest.
Don't fucking, don't fucking lie.
I've seen you wear the Australian hockey Jersey that has no ads on it.
Go back.
No, it doesn't.
No, no, go back though.
But the ads, ads, regardless of ads, look at the collar brother.
That was, I was going to bring up.
That's the crazy.
He literally looks like a bell cow, which he is, by the way, he is the bell cow for
that team because the most important thing that Jeff Skinner has done is debuted for
EHC BL Ben and he just fucking owns that league in Switzerland.
This is 20, 32 seconds into the game.
Who are you going to call?
No, it has to be.
It hasn't happened yet.
I haven't done highlights in a while.
TV days are long behind me.
Oh, it's Jeff.
It was always Jeff Skinner.
God, he's so cool.
It's magic, man.
All right.
I got to point out too many flags.
Yeah, there's so many flags.
Oh, I mean, it's a cool visual, but yeah, I would be so mad if I was sitting behind the
flags.
No, those people, those are ultras.
It's like, they're like soccer fans.
They're there more to be the fans.
than they are to even watch the game.
- Yeah, that spot is a designated part
but there's not a single blue lives matter flag where am i orange orange live matters flag like i
want you got i want my you gotta utilize that more this year i know i know i just i forget about it
sometimes but uh yeah also i gotta get my melbourne mustangs jersey is flawless and has like no spot
not even close to that what's going on there i'm sorry that i assumed it did i mean nothing has as
much shit there yeah that's probably what i was doing and like i said you don't try to be an
asshole on purpose but if you make mistakes etc etc sean and uh the melbourne melbourne sorry
melbourne shout out noah eagle or noah eagle excuse me yeah yep uh shout out noah eagle the
melbourne mustangs your jerseys are beautiful and i'm sorry i thought they had ads on them i i will
say i'm getting um increasingly in on the jeff skinner european experience i was very sad that
he didn't even know that i was going to be in on the jeff skinner european experience i was very
sad that he didn't even know that i was going to be in on the jeff skinner european experience i was
going to be in on the jeff skinner european experience i was very sad that he didn't even
get a pto in the nhl but my boy kind of looks at home like he gets to go to europe just probably
score like 55 goals yep have a good old whimsical time and uh cash his checks like all all all due
respect to like edmonton and buffalo new york but now he lives in fucking switzerland and is playing
hockey and gets the ball out like it's probably not the worst uh way to end your career and he
can be uh just
jesse pulley rv which is we slash i don't know if pete agrees but i've decided jesse pulley rv
is actually just fucking awesome at hockey but just just not he just doesn't want to do it for
the it just doesn't work for the nhl somehow if jeff keeps doing what jeff's doing we're gonna
but we knew that last year too even when he wasn't really doing much with the sharks we were like
they could like just pump his value yeah and give him a lot more
more ice time pp1 all that stuff but it just didn't happen he still got it though what do you
got sean we just we also have never considered big thing with uh switzerland is the the taxes
or lack thereof you get to avoid taxes i don't really know how that works if you're making your
money in switzerland this seems like a cash grab maybe he came from california high taxes now he
gets to play in switzerland where people hide their money in banks or whatever it goes on there
yeah we've all we've all seen wolf of wall street
right you want to trade go to hell thank you mike okay uh football is finally back in prize
picks is bringing out their best offer yet new users who sign up will get 150 in lineups if you
win your first five dollar lineup that's right if you win your first five dollar lineup you'll get
150 in lineups and now prize picks is available nationwide so what are you waiting for jennifer
love hewitt voice lock in for kickoff because everyone and everything is on prize picks baker
mayfield jennifer love hewitt voice lock in for kickoff because everyone and everything is on prize
picks baker mayfield humiliated me last week so i am counting on a bounce back i don't think that's
what prize picks was asking where it's like to toss for the non-patreon people who's your backup
quarterback uh kyler murray done you brother yeah well not anymore he's not yeah uh baker mayfield
had three fumbles last week i do not think he's going to have three fumbles against atlanta i am
counting on a bounce back for baker mayfield so i am going to go over on his passing touchdowns
projection and if a fumbles lost projection is going to go over on his passing touchdowns projection
is offered i am going to go under unless it's like one and a half in which case i'm like i was
you might have a couple you gotta leave a little room for supper yeah i don't know if he's i don't
think he's getting three but he's probably getting two yes i mean if we want to talk about good
quarterbacks you see that kurt cousins he had i think three touchdowns this week is now 14th all
time in passing touchdowns he just passed john elway okay doesn't surprise me it shocked the
world we're talking about two touchdowns this week and he's got two touchdowns this week oh my gosh
he's got two touchdowns this week and he's got two touchdowns this week he's got two touchdowns this
week he's got two touchdowns this week and he's got two touchdowns this week and he's got two
touchdowns this week and he's got two touchdowns this week and he's got two touchdowns this week
also by the way the fact that drew brees was considering playing for the denver broncos
last year in the afc championship game the fact that that is even possible is some absolute
bullshit the nfl needs to change the rules that like you can't just sign a guy off the street well
you know the most famous one phil rivers phil rivers was going to play in the super bowl you
can't do that the the roster has to be in the super bowl you can't do that the the roster has to
lock as the playoffs start i agree also chat says you can't have but you can't you can't play an
entire regular season and then have were you scared of drew brees pete is that what's happening
here are you scared of drew brees i'm not scared of drew brees i just think that that should not
be on the fucking table it should not be on the table if you lose to a quarterback who was on his
couch 24 hours ago you deserve it that is
pure way think think of it this way okay uh 2013 stanley cup final everyone's heard on the bruins
okay and this is a bad example because as soon as this guy retired he definitely was like i'm
retired but what if in 2013 in that stanley cup final bruins were like all right we're bringing
mark recce back you know or if like a better example if like if i'll stick with the bruins
like mark recce is a bad example for
a guy who's just like been away from hockey and being able to just return what why well that's
what you were saying i said like he was not a body shaming podcast no that's what i was saying i said
bad example because he was definitely enjoying retired life but like say a team a couple years
ago was like okay now we're in the cup final we're signing patrice bergeron and patrice bergeron is
just going to be our third line center and yeah he hasn't played hockey in a little while but
he's gonna fucking win every face off
and he's gonna be a defensive wizard and now we win the stanley cup because we did that
can't do it and this is from someone who intentionally watched as much philip rivers
as he possibly could from the years 2024 to 2020 whatever 2004 2020 whatever it was i i know you
got to read to finish but sports are about entertainment that'd be fun as shit that's
all i gotta at least keep him on the practice squad like make sure drew breeze is on the practice squad
for like five seconds and then he's gonna be a defensive wizard and then he's gonna be a defensive
wizard and then he's gonna be a defensive wizard and then he's gonna be a defensive wizard and then
six weeks before he can be inserted into a team's quarterback one position in the playoffs it's all
i'm asking okay if you want something a little less crazy than baker mayfield i can't offer you
bryce young staying hot in week two but i don't know if i can give you anything less crazy than
that we fuck around we have fun did you know that prize picks invented the injury reboot i did if a
player in your lineup gets injured in the first half and doesn't return your lineup can steal

bring on max van ute max what's up there he is how are we doing bonjour hi brother i recognize that
prison cell you're in brother how are you hi yeah yeah you know what it's in the transformation mode
actually you guys almost had a glimpse of uh what it's about to look like but uh yeah it's going to
be a little less prison celly
it drives me crazy i can never the team that's on your hat the montreal baseball team what was was it
like are you trolling me no i'm not it's a weird it's i'm not trolling i was like damn dj like
you're going all in trolling me on our beloved baseball team it's the expos this is a setup just
get to it yeah about to expose these nuts brother oh my okay josh allen i don't even like those
jokes that's what i was good that's like that's the only way that i was surprised by the outcome
of that setup because i know that you don't like those jokes so somehow i was surprised there even
though i knew it was setting something up yeah that's not cool because i i i thought you were
trolling you convinced me you weren't and then you went all in with those nuts not cool never go in
all all in with the nuts you don't go all in on the nuts man yeah and so that's a little toxic
masculinity ish for me get a load of that sweatshirt though oh what you got oh you be you
settle a bet oh skateboard you be yeah right
remember you saw that in the store when we went i almost got i wanted to get it i can never wasn't
you be with another team before the canadians yeah and he exposed those nuts on that yes and
that's why you got something yeah we believe in second chances you can't get me ones but not twice
okay uh i've been waiting to talk about this with you buddy uh chris crider signs with the
canadians and by i've been waiting to talk about this with you buddy i was talking to pete uh pete
chris crider
you
local boy goes to the habs how you feel i'm i'm pissed and i'm pissed that i'm pissed
chris crider should have no effect on my mental well-being in 2026 i i like him as a person i
like him as a player the only way that i end up being anti chris crider is if he gets bought out
and goes to the canadians for fucking free that's some absolute bullshit i'm out on the canadians
i'm out on crider i have to throw a big time fuck you
to fat Pat, Pat Verbeek.
I didn't mean to call him fat, uh, Pat.
for beak fuck you for pissing all over your living room and just giving away a good player to a team
that absolutely does not need it does anyone ever throw up in the room not yet okay hypotheticals
all right well i'm looking forward to hearing it max how do you feel about chris crider to the
canadians which i'm gonna soft launch my take on this uh remember in 2014 in the playoffs chris
collided with carrie price so this this is this factors in in looms very large how do you feel
about the canadians getting a good player for free max you know what's funny is that uh so i'm
getting from pete that boston people are angry and some of montreal people are angry because you know
it's hilarious because on friday i went on the rant on the podcast i host and i went on a rant
on my co-host because he he he brought the possibility of a good player to the canadians
and i was like you're kidding me you're telling me that on november 10 the night we're gonna honor
the greatest hab of the 21st century wearing the blue blanc rouge will be the guy who knocked him
who knocked him in 2014 i was like get out of here and of course the next day they announced it so
i hope that chris crider throws paint on the the the banner like a pita protester
and i hope that you guys have to just sit there and accept it and clap
because he's one of yours now also it's our respect it but the thing is once you once you
take that out of the equation you know the what i've been saying is it's like you know when you're
young and you have to take cough syrup and your mom makes you like cover your nose so you can
swallow it like this is it because as pete said we got exactly the player the habs need for free
thanks to pat verbeek's incompetence um montreal needs side you got it montreal needs a
bit more of scoring touch they got it veteran leadership because somehow this is still the
youngest team in the league although i think this thing is way blown out of proportion but anyways
so you had size you had speed you had a scoring touch a guy who can play on the pk montreal sucks
on the pk uh montreal last year was still one of the team that gave the most quality chances to
opposing team um as a forward he can play on a good line that plays against um the opposition's
side so yeah i think that's that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good
thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think
that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing
i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing
but it's freaking chris kreider so it's kind of like ah but mostly people are are excited it's but
it's funny to see like there's a bit of a civil war going on between the god damn it really crowd
and the get over it crowd if the guy they signed was jesse pulley rv we would absolutely not be
cool about this this would be we would do three hours on that we would do a 24-hour stream about
how cool it is that the canadians brought back jesse pulley rv that would be so much more fun
than this but all right on the like what did you call the crowds there's the get over a crowd
uh shout out the eagles in 1994 that song was horrible and the wait really wait really crowd
okay respectfully the wait really crowd are the worst people in the world yes that is my that i've
been biting my tongue so hard and i understand i preface a lot of things with like fan is short
for fanatic you're not rational i'm not rational if you're a fan of something it means that by
definition you're not making sense and you're not being completely rational i agree nothing gets
my ass like this type of fan behavior which is a guy crashed into our goalie one time when he was
tripped in a series that we weren't going to win anyway we've decided that everything bad that has
ever happened to our franchise is because of this guy and as a result his name is never to be uttered
and he will be you want to boo him or whatever i guess that shows some ball knowledge that like oh
you actually don't want a good player on your team over that canadians you are way too fucking
decorated to be hung up on that like i understand if you're a team that's never won anything to be
like oh we were so close to doing something one time and then this weird thing happened so
we're so we completely hate this guy you've won a bajillion fucking stanley cups and you were gonna
lose that series anyway also like i'm gonna be 35 years old and i was i was two years old the last
time they won so
the love of your life is talking right now he did it on purpose that's fine he's on your team now so
if he wants to do that shit again you're gonna take out the best goaltender on the other side
and give yourself a chance to win that's a good player on your team don't get me started on this
first of all the other teams don't have goalies they don't show up to camp
to act like any canadians fan a single canadians fan is going to continue to hold that grudge
the second that he does anything good for your team and helps them win a game
is some complete and utter woke nonsense bullshit the second that he helps you win
one regular season game the second he helps you win one pre-season game canadians fans are gonna
be like he's fucking ours hell yeah and whatever the french translation of that is stop whining
glad to see republi pete is out number one talking i'm big time out fuck you guys i'm happy to be
back jokes honestly though like i'm i'm rational enough to know that it's irrational to hold it
against him that's why i'm not going to be a fan of him i'm not going to be a fan of him i'm not
saying it is a great ad if he was not named chris crowder one thing you're wrong on a dj though it's
not that we would have won in 2014 they probably don't beat the kings it's that he didn't just
ruin 2014 he ruined carrie price's career it's all fucked up and he started there and then it
ended in 2021 maybe he's still playing without that but anyways i'm no doctor um but the thing
i do enjoy though is that um i like it because it's some we like storylines in sport and as much as i have
hated the guy and irrationally blamed him for everything for the past 12 years if he comes in
and what is one thing chris crider does freaking well is get his big ass in front of the net
and uh deflect is the word in english yep yeah redirect the puck from the blue line uh he did
that so freaking well with adam fox he's not unless injury happens gonna play on the first
power play with lane hudson but even without the first power play if he gets his big ass in front
of the net he's gonna play on the first power play with lane hudson but even without the first
net with no adoption with uh lane hudson taking shots through traffic to get to the net he's gonna
deflect them he's gonna get a lot of goal he can get 25 he can go to 30 no matter what uh and it's
just gonna be a good story of villain turn anti-hero turn whatever you want so like the
storyline is gonna be funny okay what if he's looking at the canadians puckpedia page makes me
so angry so angry lane hudson didn't want trouble he didn't want anyone to get mad in
2026 they don't have a single player making more than 10 million dollars a year
it's beautiful that's fucking that's a third of what justin sort of is going to be making
justin sort of makes 18 million dollars a year starting now it's underreported how ridiculous
the zach boldock contract is 4.2 million dollars yeah for four years they didn't buy a single year
of free agency that's how they got him to that number but me too when i saw all the contracts
being signed for like uh the guy i like to call the coivus poorman coivunen in pittsburgh um yeah
me too i was surprised i was a bit surprised by boldock's contract uh but good on them good on
him because boldock was a guy who like first of all boldock is a guy who the whole fan base
myself included to be honest the whole last year like if there is one thing well actually there's
the jack i think but that's a whole not a whole lot of thing but one grudge people have had
held against martin st louis in the past year is how he hasn't given a single second a single shot
of boldock and demidov together last year not once and it feels like they should be meant to be
zach boldock is a two times 50 goal scorer in the lsgmq uh he is a guy who has an amazing shot he
is great with the one timer he is a goal scorer he's been his whole life before coming into the
nhl he scored 19 goals with the blues the season before so everybody's been thinking that he is the
time to be on the second line with demidov eventually they didn't give that to him and
now adding crider buys maybe another year of him you know bringing some touch-ups to his game on
the third line he was really good in the playoffs last year despite not scoring as many goals
he's had it you know for checking hits to his game so if that gives him another year and then
the year after he's the one coming for the spot on the second line with demidov that could be
terrifying because the guy can score goals he really can and if two years from now
he's a 25 goals car in that economy that's gonna be great who gets uh squeezed out here by the way
in this offensive picture is a kirby doc is like good as mine yeah but it's it's just gonna be
there's gonna be some sort of like super fourth line rotation of making all these pieces fit
because i mean i think that josh anderson is like a good fourth liner and i think that he's probably
gonna
be yeah and he was just given the a he's not going anywhere yeah right so he's not getting
squeezed out what's funny is the fourth line is not gonna get squeezed out because on the fourth
line you're gonna have your two vets you have daniel and anderson they're important on the pk
anderson is one of the heart of the teams
Also, by the way, Dylan Larkin was just given an A.
That doesn't mean anything.
Was he actually given an A?
Okay.
It doesn't mean he's not going anywhere.
Fair.
And, like, theoretically, even though he's a center,
they put Jake Evans at some point on the wing, on the fourth line,
and he's probably going to, you know, take faceoff on the right side,
take his faceoff on the PK and all that.
But technically that fourth line is the line.
It's weird because it's not a real fourth line,
like in the sense that it's your second most important line
in one-on-one matchups because, essentially,
they play Suzuki against the best line, always.
That's why he won the freaking Selkie.
And then you have these three guys who need to play against the second line,
most likely.
So the guys on the third line are the ones most likely to be in
and out of the lineup.
To me, to start the year, there are three candidates.
It's Kirby Dock.
It's Oliver Kapanen.
Despite scoring,
22 goals last year and Alexandre Texier.
I think, it's not my choice,
I think Kapanen is the odd man out to start the year
because of the way the Habs keep on treating Kirby Dock.
What I mean by this is you paid a big price at the draft in 2022
to get that guy.
And, you know, for reasons that are right or wrong,
he's a GM's dream.
Oh, he's huge.
He's got the tools.
He's got potential.
At some point, you know, if you're 30-year-old with a potential,
he's not 30-year-old,
but you get what I mean.
If you get to a point in your career where potential never developed,
I mean, what the heck?
But I think they want to give him one last shot
and he's going to probably center the third line.
With Texier and Bodzik, who did good in the playoffs,
you put Kreider with the new hook on the second line
and Kapanen might be the odd man out to start the year.
Again, despite scoring 20 goals last year, which is crazy.
Okay.
Can I ask, where are you guys looking at the goal?
What's the defending situation this year?
Like, is Dobesh your guy or are you kind of expecting a split with Fowler
and maybe like a Fowler takeover at some point?
So, Dobesh definitely is the starter to start the year.
Obviously, they kept Montembeau this summer,
which is something a lot of people are angry about.
I personally am not because I would be very happy
if the strategy with Fowler is a bit reminiscent
of what Tempa did with Wasilewski way, way back.
I don't know if you remember,
but Wasilewski even, if I remember correctly,
a year played in the playoffs.
Yeah, he was behind Ben Bishop when Bishop got hurt.
Yeah, and he went back to,
I don't know if it was Syracuse back then,
but whatever was the EHL team 10 years ago or more than that.
He went back to start the season
and they had Nabokov as the backup
and then Nabokov wasn't really good,
didn't really matter, Bishop was good.
And then Wasilewski was killing it in the A.
So, by January, they were like, yeah, Nabokov, thank you.
Get out of here.
They brought back Wasilewski.
I wouldn't have a problem if that's the strategy
to start the year with Dobesh, the clear cut number one,
give him four game out of five if you must.
You play Monty a little less.
If he can have a few good games, great.
Maybe a team that will have an injury or something
will want an insurance policy from a guy who,
let's be real, sucked last year,
but had two very good season before that.
And then you get Fowler back.
And I'm a big believer in young goaltender like Fowler
that it's better for him to be the number one guy in the A,
getting starts day in, day out,
while Dobesh is playing number one in Montreal
instead of playing once every week and a half behind Dobesh.
So, to start the year, to me, that's the portrait.
With Dobesh number one, Monty behind him,
Fowler clear cut number one,
getting starts here and there like they did last year
whenever they can because he's freaking good.
I think he's the future.
And whenever you finally get something for Monty
and Fowler is at the end of start this season,
you get him and then you got your duo for the next few years.
I really believe that with Fowler and Dobesh,
especially with a great contract Dobesh signed this summer,
that Dobesh-Fowler for at least two, three years
could be reminiscent of Swayman and Yulmark
if the Habs really play this smart.
So, I was going to bring up Swayman and Yulmark
because Boston did the model that you're talking about in 2020,
I want to say, when they signed Linus Yulmark
and Jeremy Swayman was ready, everybody thought,
and they were like, okay.
Swayman had played in the playoffs, I think, maybe?
Yeah, I think he played against Washington.
Yeah, and they were like, yes.
And they were like, okay.
So, yeah, when Rask had his, oh, and when Rask left, I guess,
and they were like, okay, so it's going to be Yulmark
and it's going to be Swayman, and then they re-signed Rask
and they just sent Swayman back down to the AHL
to get him more seasoning.
I get it, but I'm also like, fuck, if the guy's ready.
Like, Fowler, I think, has the biggest ceiling of the three,
but you also have a, with Montembeau,
like maybe he's this year's Jari,
where you like, you play him,
you play him enough early on in the season
and everyone's like, oh, yeah, he's not great,
but he's an NHL goalie.
Someone goes out and trades for him and then, boom,
that $4 million or whatever it is is off your hands.
And a lot of the discourse around Hellebuck right now
is that teams don't want a Hellebuck,
like a high-priced proven goaltender.
The market now kind of leans towards,
well, where do we find the next Brandon Bussey?
Where do we find the cheaper guy who we can take a chance on
and might be hot at the right time for us?
And like, maybe that's Montembeau.
Yeah, and I know that,
I mean, people do online rumors about every team
and every player.
I would not want Hellebuck if I were the Canadians.
I would be so much happier to have every contract
on your books be unbelievable and to know,
like you have, I know that Montembeau was bad last year,
but you have a guy who was in the mix for Team Canada
once upon a time and has proven to be
like a decent NHL starting goalie.
Plus you have a prospect who,
is amazing and a guy who I think he was overrated
in the playoffs last year,
but like Dobesh had some really good moments
in the post-season last year.
You kind of have the ideal goaltending situation.
Yeah, the thing with Dobesh is,
he, like last year was weird because in this season,
people were high on him because he had an amazing record,
but he was winning those five to four games.
Like it was crazy.
There was a point in the season
when Fowler started playing a bit more,
when he had around 10 games,
and you would see the puck support
and it was actually hilarious.
Like Dobesh would get four goals per game from his team
when Fowler was in, he had like 2.5 goals.
So, and there's this thing with goaltending
and that's why personally, I always feel it's hilarious.
Like in team sports, there are three positions
where win is an individual stat,
the quarterback, the pitcher, and the goalie.
Like, I know it's an extreme, but just to prove my case,
you could lose every single one of your game,
one to nothing, and your goalie has zero wins.
Like, okay, or look, what's his name?
Paul Skeens on the Pirates?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Pirates?
That was a weird way.
Oh, fuck yeah.
The Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hell yeah, brother.
I kind of mixed the French and English pronunciation
and I ended up with an invented word
with the Pittsburgh team.
But in the playoffs, what he showed is
there are goalies that have this ability
to shut everything out when the game is on the line.
And clearly, Dobesh has hit.
It's amazing.
It doesn't matter.
If he gave three softies in the second period,
if it's three to three in the third,
he can clock in.
And this is an amazing ability.
Did he play a bit over his head?
Who knows?
Maybe.
Marco Marciano, the new Montreal goaltending coach,
is amazing.
I think Fowler is more your traditional,
like, he's a mini Price, really.
When you look at him, it's crazy.
He's smaller, but he's,
Andrei Vasilevsky is like this,
all those goalies, you know,
he's so square, he's so compact.
Dobesh is more of a swimmer in front of his net,
but he has the it factor.
So the longer you can keep those two guys,
and you talked about Hellebuck,
it's funny because in Montreal,
there's not even an ounce of talk of maybe Hellebuck.
And I think, honestly, as weird as it sounds,
I think people would be extremely mad
if there was a trade for Connor Hellebuck.
Go to hell.
Yeah.
I also don't think that Hellebuck wants to play in Canada.
You know what?
I think he was a bit wrongfully placed
in the same category as Fowler.
I think he was a bit wrongfully placed
in the same category as the other Americans
when he requested a trade.
Because I think that if there wasn't
all the political stuff going on right now,
and the Kachuks and Quinn Hughes
and whoever else were the other American that left,
he wants to win.
Like, this is from a veteran,
something that has been usual in their career
to go, hey, I'm in my mid-30s now.
Like, can you send me to a team
that isn't at the bottom of the standings?
That's pretty usual.
There were rumors that he would be willing
to go to Toronto.
Toronto took Sergei Bobrovsky.
Personally, I've always said, man,
just send him to Edmonton.
Just get him to Edmonton.
They have no more excuses
if they choke with that guy between the pipes.
The thing is, now that Toronto has chosen Bobrovsky
and clearly Edmonton doesn't seem to be
a possible destination.
Well, Montreal are set.
I don't think Ottawa would do it in any way.
If he wants to win, is it Ottawa?
And it's clearly not Calgary and Vancouver.
So only American's market are left
but I don't know if the Habs came knocking.
Would he say no?
Honestly, especially now with Kreider there,
I think he would come to be honest with you.
I would offer, or I'm sorry,
I need to offer an update
and a correction on something.
Tuukka Rask, when he left the bubble,
that was not when Jeremy Swayman made his debut.
We were close though.
Yeah, Halak was the backup then
and I forget who would have been
the backup to Halak at the time.
It was the second round next year
when Tuukka was clearly hurt
and they were playing,
against the Islanders.
That was a series that was more about Ilyas
Sorokin than it was about
either of the Boston goalies. But yeah, it was in
2021, Swayman played, and everyone
was like, okay, cool, he's ready. And they were
like, nah, more seasoning, more
seasoning. Interesting for the Canadians
that a couple of years ago, I think everyone
agreed that they overachieved. And going into
last year, you're like, okay, they overachieved,
they made the playoffs.
I feel, as somebody who really
likes this Canadiens team, as everyone on this show
does, especially Pete, that
last year, they still overachieved by
getting out of the second round and getting to the Eastern
Conference Final. But I
still think for the third year in a row,
they're better than they were last
year. So is this maybe, to jump
sports, a New England Patriots situation
where the team
is definitely better this year, I would say,
but how much better
do you expect the results
to be, given that
they got a little fortunate to
pull the Game 7s out of their asses
that they did last year?
Theoretically, the conference
should be better. The water should
find its level in the conference. Washington is
so much better.
Buffalo, I don't think is, I think Buffalo
got worse, but Buffalo is definitely
still there. I feel
more comfortable saying that the
Eastern Conference as a whole was a
fluke last year than
Montreal was a fluke
to get to the Eastern Conference.
In what sense do you mean that?
Like the Eastern Conference
being a fluke? The Pittsburgh Penguins
making the playoffs.
Yeah, just like
the. The Panthers having a foul year
where everything went wrong for them. Like, the Panthers
should be a powerhouse team again
this year.
I don't know. Like, Washington
was on the downswing.
Sabres managed to kind of
figure it all out, piece it together.
I just think that there's going to be
more pieces in play. Like,
teams were fighting to not make the playoffs
last year, basically, in the Eastern Conference.
The Bruins made the playoffs last
year. It's weird.
Yeah. Yeah, I hear you.
I hear you. But the thing is, to me, the Atlantic
is still the best division in hockey, or at
least the most complete, because
of course, the top three in the
Central
is amazing, but
it's the three. Well, now Utah is pretty
damn good, but, you know, you never
know. The thing with the Atlantic is, the
only team I'm looking at and I'm crossing
off the playoffs is the Red Wings.
And even the Red Wings, I'm
not going to have a heart
attack if they make the playoffs.
That would rock so fucking much if
they trade Dylan Larkin for
a second-round pick and then win the
President's Trophy. I mean, I think their
team's a mess, but it's also
hard not to. It's hard to ignore the fact that they've been close
the past couple of years. Exactly.
They were first in the conference last year in January.
I was going to say, they started
awesome. We were talking about Emmitt Finney
every fucking day. Sean's guy. Yeah.
My guy.
So, like. No, but even Detroit,
I'm looking at them and I'm like, it's not that crazy.
So, there's the. The strength of the Atlantic.
There's also the fact that, let's not
kid ourselves, like, it's weird
because Montreal are both, in my sense,
once. Like, let's say that Dylan Larkin
wasn't a dumbass and he actually
wanted to win and he
would put Montreal on his list.
And he came and he was Montreal's
second lineman. I honestly think
you have to consider Montreal maybe a
top three, maybe even the second best team
in the East if they just added
Dylan Larkin for a bunch of prospect
that doesn't take off, like, actual
talent. But right now,
this is fantastic.
And the thing on the other side
that is weird without that coveted
second lineman is that
in a way, like,
this might be my hottest take on the NHL
right now, okay?
The player that
is the most important to his team
in the sense that an injury
to that player is the most
devastating to his team,
it's not Kel McCarr, it's not Nathan McKinnon,
it's not Connor McDavid,
it is freaking Nick Suzuki.
Because look at the center
line of Montreal
if he's not there. Montreal
are freaking lucky because
Nick Suzuki is an Ironman. He has literally
never missed an NHL game
in his career so far.
Only 10 games
of Nick Suzuki being injured
could be devastating.
Nothing short of devastating
for the Montreal Canadiens.
100-point scorer, Selkie winner
who doesn't have a legit second
center man behind him,
that would be devastating.
Not to the point of Carey Price in 2015-2016,
the Montreal Canadiens literally
went from first to last in the NHL
due to his injury, but
it would be devastating.
Everything is still a bit
on a razor edge with the team
because of the fact that they don't have a second
line center. Jake Evans would become
real important at work real fast.
That would be hilarious.
It's reminiscent of Joel Eriksson-Eck
for the Wild when he got hurt in the playoffs
last year. They don't have
center depth.
He's a guy who is not
quite as
explosive or productive
as Suzuki, but kind of fits
a similar mold in his importance
to that team.
You're right. That whole
picture may fall apart if anything happens
to Suzuki.
Exactly.
As far as expectation to. I did not answer your question.
I realized, DJ,
is that I feel like
now, for the next
5, 6, 7, 8
years, you're at the point
where it's not Stanley Cup
or bust this year for the Habs, but now
it's the expectations.
The next step. You did the
freaking Final Four. A second
round exit would be cool. Another
conference final would be cool, but now
the next step is to get to the Stanley
Cup Final. I do
believe it would take a tremendous
jump from Demidov,
from Slavkovsky,
from Dobesh, still being
an amazing goaltender.
There is still a lot that has to
go right for them to pull off
a Chicago Blackhawk. What was
it? In 2010? The Blackhawks came out
of nowhere in 2009, if I'm correct.
Went from not making
the playoffs to the conference final
and then boom. The next year they were champion
and we all know what happened next.
I don't think this is what's in line for Montreal
because of the lack of depth.
But now, you know,
you have to do a second round now.
I think it's going to be the expectation.
Anything less than that would be disappointing.
Everything more will be cool.
Yeah, I would say simply that they've arrived
in there in their window now and
this happens. This happens sometimes
when we talk about teams like the Avalanche or the
Stars where you're like,
oh, they didn't break through
this year. They lost in the second round
or in the Stars case, they lost in the conference final.
Like, what do they need to do? It's like
they're in their fucking
window, man. You just do it again next
year. Like you're going to be in the mix
all the time. And I think the Canadians
are now in their window where they're in
the mix all the time. And to go to the
other side of their center depth conversation,
who's to say
that this year they're
good. Penguins
maybe regress and aren't
a playoff team. And suddenly we get
to do the Sidney Crosby conversation.
If ever there were a team other
than the Oilers where Sidney
Crosby going to them would change
shit so, so much. I do have a fun
theory that Sidney Crosby should want to go
to the Oilers so they win a Stanley
Cup and then he can say, yeah, Conor
McDavid won a Stanley Cup, but he only did it with
Sidney Crosby. That's immense. His legacy
is the goat over Conor McDavid,
but going to Montreal,
everybody's wanted it forever, but
it would also be
the most unbelievable
fit where you're legitimate. Everybody wants
Sidney Crosby, but that is an
actual need.
DJ man to quote my
boy Hawkeye. Don't don't don't give me
hope, man, right? We finally came to like
the thing is, we finally came to rest
last year in Montreal with Crosby with
the Penguins making last year was the
year last summer. It was the talk of
the town was like the Penguins suck.
They're gonna suck again. Sid is
finally going to realize that he has
no business in this town. If he
wants another shot at the Stanley Cup,
he will come and he will be our second
lineman. He will bring Stanley home. It
would it would be amazing and like I
don't know if
I don't know how known this is out of
Quebec outside of Quebec, but the thing is
you had to be there in 03 and 04 when Crosby
was in the queue. I was in the town. I lived in
the town that had a team. The vote shot at
Romanville that I saw Sidney Crosby live and
boys like it was before everybody knew Sidney
Crosby was it was before his first world junior
and like they overcrowded the arenas. That shit
was illegal, man. Like I never seen this in my
life. Arena.
That had 3000 capacities were packed to
5000. You couldn't even move. And if you
remember like the way the lottery was
done in 05 is that the lottery was done
and then they revealed the logos. So
Montreal were never close to getting
Crosby because they picked Pittsburgh.
But the way they revealed it when we
were down to number six and then number
five, everybody was like, holy shit, he
might be coming here. And ever since
that love story never stopped. The love
story from Quebec with Sidney Crosby
never stopped. You saw it at the four
nation. How much love you receive from the Bell
Center. And we were all in last year. We were
all it was like this is the time, but we put
it to rest, DJ. We know it will never happen.
But you got my heart on that. You got Carey
Price at number five. And until Chris Crider
ruined his knees, he was a really good player.
He won an MVP after his knees were ruined, by
the way. All right, you're the best dude. Thank
you so much for coming on. We love having you
on. And it's been how's the house?
Number one rule of talking
to somebody who's doing renovation dj you don't talk about the renovation yeah it's uh we we have
a roof and we have running water so man are you living through the renovations or are you elsewhere
no we're we're living through the renovation and it's a very very painful project and you know
it's getting a bit cold here at this time of the year yes so uh yesterday uh poor wifey got up and
because 90 of our clothes are in a trailer behind the house and she was like yeah i have a problem i
have no coat and it's five degree outside in celsius for you guys since you guys are it's a
real crisp sounds like in the air it's it's fall there's a real you know what you should do it's
hockey sweater weather hockey just toss on i'm gonna start like the next couple of weeks is my
opportunity to wear some hockey jerseys around so tell you and you and the wife toss on whatever
jersey you may have and just enjoy that fall crisp
watch the movie roof man with channing tatum it's about what you're going through right now
that's exactly what we'll do we'll do love you buddy thanks for coming on thanks guys
bye pal max van ute our our guy god time just melts away we're on with max what an absolute
legend yes uh what a guy by the way should note on those uh on that contract for chris crider it
is a 35 plus contract so it's got 3.25 million dollars in performance bonuses to go with the
2.15 million dollar base two million dollars for 10 games played that's what i call the old
tie in your skates incentive well if you get your skates on how many games how many games in is that
carrie price retirement night and like or whatever the honoring night for carrie price is what if i
don't know people won't shut the fuck up about that stupid fucking night what if gary price gets
his revenge what if gary price comes to the arena and uh nancy tanya harding's carry price's knees
gets his revenge and he's gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my
god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god
then he'll have done worse than what chris crider did because chris crider who was playing hockey
played hockey and crashed into the goalie but gotta get over it folks i mean at least price
would be making his count he'd be taking a lot of money out of that guy's pockets yes true speaking
of still uh cash grabbing that's right being out speaking of goalies connor hellebuck not likely
to report to jets training camp a lot of a lot of reaction to this one and uh the biggest one that i
have seen is you don't get to do this you signed the contract it's year three of an eight-year deal
i'm seeing a lot of the reaction and i'm like will bond had it first seriously you all laughed
at that will bond rant but i'm hearing a lot of the ways people are talking and it sounds an awful
lot like be one of them dude sounds like that i'll say i did not anticipate the connor hellebuck
situation being messier than dylan
than dylan larkin heading into the season like i thought that that hellebuck was just gonna like
quietly hope for a trade and may like his list is more expansive he's being less picky about it
the non-reporting is kind of wild to me yeah i think it's better for everybody
if he's really not gonna play but i'm also like who's fucking trading for you man
darren drager do we have the audio sean of darren drager talking about the
trade offers for connor hellebuck right now hit me yes we do why wasn't he traded and the harsh
reality fellows the offers were terrible the offers were terrible i mean and you know you
know he hasn't expanded no trade list which means that there are more than a few teams that hellebuck
would consider going to well that's great but you know you do have to look at the bigger picture and
a lot of those teams have decent goals and they're not going to be able to do that because they're not
going to be able to do that because they're not going to be able to do that because they're not
have decent goaltending so automatically that makes them a non-fit right you know or you you
get teams that kick tires and have decent goaltending but they do see connor hellebuck as
a potential upgrade but they want connor hellebuck at a discount price bargain basement return well
kevin shovel layoff and the winnipeg jets can't do that they can't do that how would you sell that
to the fan base right um and there's all kinds of speculation out there about well you can come back
he'd be a good fit for the fan base right and there's all kinds of speculation out there about
really we just want to be that's enough yeah okay yeah the trade offers are terrible i also need to
know have you heard from chevy on this one because i'm seeing everyone get all sorts of pissed at
connor hellebuck and i'm wondering if it's a both sides agreed let's just not have a circus here
like we do not want to have every like i talk all the time about like it's not worth having a player
on your roster if there's going to be a circus and they're not very good how about if they're
not going to play for your team and they're not going to play for your team and they're not going
to play for your team and it's going to be a circus yeah but here's the thing if if shovel
day off told hellebuck don't come it's gonna it's gonna be a mess if you come
uh then hellebuck should make that clear yeah but they can't but they can't they they because if
if the jets admit we told him don't come then it's saying oh yeah we have to get rid of this
guy he's burning a hole in our pocket well he's burning a hole in your pocket either way
he is i don't know
a ten and a half million dollar hole in the winnipeg jets uh pocket we talked about the
offers and how maybe no one's gonna beat that pick swap that the uh sabers were trying to do
with the jets sean the more this goes on though are you like you know what i'm cool with dax and
rudolph i'm cool with that that they did not do this pick swap and trade and there was gonna be
21 involved or something and a prospect to get connor hellebuck because i stay on the side of
sabers you're good don't do that i mean no i don't think they're good i don't think their
goaltending is good enough and i would have done that trade in a heartbeat because first off but
here's the thing if they wait like doesn't the the doesn't the deal just become worse and like
maybe they get them for lower than they originally offered oh i mean if they can get them for less
that then yeah it'd be awesome but it doesn't lose in leverage by the second yeah i agree but i mean
it just seems like they're like they're not gonna trade that guy i don't like i don't i don't really
know how this goes because it's going to require them to take less than they were reportedly
offered um which is just like that's how i think gms lose their jobs which like honestly shovel
day i might lose his job anyways after all this but um i i don't know i i think the reality is
they probably would have gotten dax and rudolph at eight too like it seems like everyone everyone
wanted they had a d-man that they wanted and it was all different
and nobody knew who was good so like i don't know i uh i still want connor hellebuck i still
would be happy to give up like any draft picks whichever goalie they want but they don't want
picks jack quinn yeah they i don't know who they think they are they need centers they they think
that if they get young centers they'll be good and the sabers are good that roster is not good
i don't know if they think that they'll be good if they get young centers i just think that they
they might be good if they get young centers i just think that they they might be good if they
believe that they won't have to look for centers if they get for young yeah they're probably just
spent the last 10 years looking for centers um the the thing that i thought of this morning was like
when was the last time we had a player just say i'm not showing up to camp like well that's what
i was gonna say not a contract dispute or not a lack of a contract like everybody kept calling
the swayman thing drove me crazy wasn't a fucking hold on he didn't have a deal yeah well i guess
he was holding on to a contract he was holding on to a contract he was holding on to a contract
he was holding out for a deal no but that's not what it is like a holdout is i will not play for
this contract right and so i don't remember the last time that a player was just like i'm not
reporting despite my deal maybe it was alexi ashen uh that was 1995 years ago so 20 nope that
was 1995 95 31 that was 31 years ago 31 years ago so this is like fairly
unprecedented or fairly foreign territory for the nhl precedential uh medal of freedom yeah
here's a question because i don't like how did that hold out at i don't know he set out the entire
year okay so yeah that's what i was gonna say is like not a single point yeah it was real rusty
jeff better connor hellebuck doesn't strike me as someone who's going to uh
bend the knee capitulate however you want to put it like like what happens if connor hellebuck
terrorist demands yeah like what happens if connor hellebuck just doesn't play an entire year
i have an answer jets make the playoffs and stew skinner is the fucking heart winner
that would jets are not making the fucking playoff i know not without but if they do
do you say heart yeah all right those idiots who are like connor hellebuck is the mvp this year
are going to either admit they were wrong about something or all right
you got to vote for stew for mvp now well i mean what if they what if they reggie busham what if
they take back the heart take take back connor hellebuck's mvp yeah i think that's i think that's
a good idea it's the right thing to do uh how do we feel they're definitely not going to do that
though they will they will just give like mark shifley mvp or something like that i don't think
for any winnipeg jets if they make the playoffs i don't know uh okay another big thing that's come
with the hellebuck thing
has been players with no trade clauses demanding trades and a common refrain is if you
demand a trade you should lose your no trade list how do we feel i think that it should shrink
like if you have a full no move full no trade and you request a trade it should shrink to like
10 teams no trade or something like that that's exactly it that's exactly it it should be smaller
it shouldn't go we you should you should defund the no trade list you should not abolish the no
trade list but here's the thing like you're definitely not talking hell about language now
nice nice does does that like introduce a really weird gray area though where like
four teams and players will avoid formally making the no trade or making the trade request formal
and then having to submit it to the
league so that it shrinks the thing yeah that's what will happen yeah they'll just go to their
they'll have their agent softly say you know what there will be a lot of our guy wasn't thrilled
about uh our guy wasn't happy about this kind of thing but then what happens when
then we're going to interpret things as like well is this a trade request if we have what
happened with like rick bonus at the end of last season where rick bonus they missed the playoffs
blue jackets comes out last game and is like got some bitches on my team the ones in there
you want bitches go into that room that is where you'll find bitches and then the next day crazy
that that worked to get him a job but then the next day but then the next day it was
zach warensky was not thrilled with rick bonus giving uh it's some bitches in their speech and
we'd be like oh oh is that is he a bitch no no not to be one of the bitches but like oh like
is that uh is that and i'm not requesting a trade but he wants to be traded kind of thing
that'd be that'd be like the hit chat of trade rumors and i think that i would not want to
have to look in depth at everything that closely shout out rick bonus my thing is that like
contracts at the end of the day are an agreement between two parties and like you could just those
those people can do what you could do whatever you want like if we one of them dude like if
connor hellebuck doesn't want to play then like don't pay him i like i don't know like it's
i don't know what to do with that and if he wants to request a trade like in any other circumstance
if you had a contract like you can leave the you can you can leave your job you might have a no no
compete or whatever but like i just don't understand why it's such a such a big deal i guess
like i'm pro players requesting trades i think the whole like oh you signed a contract you gotta like
that's not how the world works in any right like there's ramifications for not completing your
contract obviously as there should be but it doesn't mean that like you can't request out of your job
right but on the other side there's ramifications for not completing your contract obviously as there should be but it doesn't mean that like you can't request out of your job
i agree and and like i think he's well within his right to request a trade it's the it's the not
reporting thing to me that is iffy because like you can say it's gonna be messy and the team can
tell him to not report blah blah that's fine but if he if his end goal here is to win which he keeps
saying like he wants a trade to win you know how you have zero percent chance of winning is by not
playing hockey at all like he shows up to the jets camp
and
he could win he can win some games can win
miniscule amounts of games perhaps but he's gonna win zero games if he's not playing hockey
how does this affect his hall of fame candidacy zero wins didn't do shit in camp got mogged by a
bunch of rookies so like that's where i'm i'm like he it's not about wanting to win it's about
not wanting to play in winnipeg yeah i think i just need more information about winnipeg's
end of this before i can fully uh skewer connor hellebuck for this because as sean said like i
get wanting out of there and yeah i'm not thrilled with the if it is a and i agree with max that it
doesn't seem that it is as hard a get me to the united states line and i i think that we are uh
making an association there that i think you know understandably so but i don't know it to be true
that he's like just get me to the united states line and i think that we are uh making an association
to the united states i think he's like i won something holy shit i didn't know that could
be done i would like to do more of that yeah i i i believe in a player's right to request a trade
i also believe in a team's right to not fulfill it and i also believe in a like if your trade
request is not fulfilled by the team you should play out your contract like you you signed a play
and you request a trade i
why he gets shit for it a lot you don't but you don't take to brusco did it jake to brusco requested
a trade like 80 times yeah and they just never traded him and you know we've heard the stories
of he would like pack extra on road trips because he'd be like this is it this time i'm they're
really gonna trade me i'm ready to relocate and they were like okay we're gonna make the playoffs
we're not trading you dude for all the shit that i've talked about dylan larkin this summer and i
was an absolute bitch this entire summer being like trade me to three teams i don't think that
you should be able to do that too i don't think that you should be able to strong arm your team
into trading you period i don't think that you should be able to hand pick your trade destination
that kind of kill like i mean i get it in the sense like the brad martian situation where he's
like i i want to be traded to florida i have no movement clause that's when you get to flex it
fine if you want to get into that that's fine i just don't like holding your team hostage to
trade you that gives me a weird feeling for all the shit that i've talked about dylan larkin
at least he's showing up to camp and going through the humiliation ritual of getting the c-stripped
and just kind of eating it until they trade him yeah i think everyone has a right to do whatever
the fuck they want like if you don't want to play there request your trade i don't give a
fuck about like you sign a contract cool you don't want to play there request a trade if they don't
want to trade you you don't want to play if you don't want to play they don't pay you like i think
it'd be ridiculous if connor hellebuck was sitting there if like
the jets were like well okay if you're not going to report we're not going to pay you and connor
hellebuck's like well i signed a contract you owe me this money well then that makes no fucking
sense but like yeah if you if you don't want to you don't want to play then you don't make like
yeah that's your you're you're you're right do whatever the fuck you want i just think yeah i
mean i i'd just be really fucking pissed if you sign an eight-year deal and then what three years
into the eight-year deal you're just like i would rather not play hockey
than be here that to me is like i mean i but i also have the same situation isn't that bad or
that dire so like that's what i was gonna say i guess on the other side is that like because like
even the brusque thing i was very uh supportive of the brusque because like i get you sign the
contract and everything but you sign that contract with a completely different understanding of what
was supposed to be going on like when he signed that contract in vancouver vancouver was supposed
to be good like they were in the right and then they
blew up the entire fucking franchise like that's not his fault and to us it's different with
winnipeg but like he signed that contract with the expectation that they were going to do
literally a single goddamn thing to make that team better and they haven't it's so funny i was
talking about jake de brusque's contract in boston when he was demanding a trade and i'm pretty sure
he's i'm pretty like hasn't he also requested a trade from the yeah that one is completely
makes way more sense yeah yeah yeah okay that's i didn't think i was thinking about the boss
thinking about vancouver but like i don't know i get that that's not part of like the language of
the contract but you sign the contract with an understanding of what this thing is supposed to
be and if they don't hold up their end of the bargain in that right in that regard like i
understand you want no okay let's uh do espn superstar poll greg wachinski pulled a bunch of
nhl stars on such topics as the upcoming 84 game season texas expansion and rule changes that they'd
like to see in the future and i'm pretty sure that's what they're going to do so i'm going to
read it on espn.com uh i want to go through my three favorite questions and answers that
happened here sean have you seen this pete have you seen this i have not i was gonna say you left
out my some of my favorite answers from the texas one in particular okay yeah yeah we can go through
some of those as uh well i know what those are gonna be it's gonna be uh yeah we can go through
those let's start with the texas one and i'm gonna go through some of those and i'm gonna go through
with the question how will your life be impacted by an 84 game season matt coronado
superstar participated in this and said quote my life will not be impacted by it i mean that is
quite literally incorrect you will be playing two more games playing two more games brother i mean
not necessarily he can hold out last two that's true oh that's a proper holdout that's a good
read i like that read it's like my life will not be impacted i ain't playing those two fucking
yeah i signed my contract i signed to play 82 games oh that'd be cool this is the oh that's a
good point this is and this is also like the most uh like state testing answer like reiterate the
question how will your life be impacted by 84 games my life will not be impacted by playing
84 games oh fuck yeah shut out not knowing the answer on the test and doing that that's the good
shit uh the nhl is adding another team in texas in either houston or austin what would you like for
them to become
called my favorite answer came from tom wilson who said not for me to decide
my my favorite was um i think logan cooley was like the cowboys brother yeah there were some
people who did not understand the assignment at all or so i think uh philip forsberg said
the butt kickers oh that's because of the cowboy boots the butt kickers because of the boots uh
there were a lot of what associations do i make with sports teams in texas oh i know i'll say
sports teams in texas we love quentin byfield we're a quentin byfield podcast he answered every
time i think of texas i just keep thinking of other teams names i mean i like the longhorns
fuck yeah brother that's my guy you don't want there to be a hockey team called the longhorns
when we've already established this is going to be a tough one to have juice with i mean
definitely not but i do like that quentin byfield is a longhorns respecter yeah i'm gonna say it
brady kachuk said the wranglers oh no that's calgary yeah we can do the same for texas team
but we can do the same name for texas uh yeah logan cooley said i was gonna say cowboys i think
it's baller would make a sick logo too and he's american he's american like it's like what's the
logo logan cooley is it a star by any chance cole caulfield had a little bit of uh dot com the need
you have to be the smartest person in the room is off-putting answer you see that he said yeah
houston arrows run it back yes run it back i was like okay this guy's a story arrows like
yeah i uh i fancy myself a bit of a hockey team name nowhere myself yeah uh jack eichel said the
cattle there were some okay wyatt johnson got weird said the houston humidity yeah what about
that's a guy that plays in texas the houston drivers all right that play drivers and cattle
drivers yeah i like the drivers i'm not not mad about it okay stay out of this now my favorite
one is this is like the first lengthy answer that i've thrown in here the question was if you could
change or drop one rule in the nhl what would it be leo carlson answered the offside review when it
takes long after the play if it's an offside and they score right away it should be offside but if
it's 30 seconds after then the team scores it's like oh come on it doesn't affect the play but i
do love it when the other team scores and then it's offside right on brother rule for thee not
for me rules for thee not for me
i thought i mean i thought that leo carlson's answer was just gonna be get rid of the salary
cap restrictions yeah i thought it was good too what's i thought you should be able to have 21
percent those were some good ass answers were there any uh others that stood out to you sean
no the the the texas name ones were the one that real stuck out to me it's like these guys
really did not want to use their brains when answering this question it was like it was like
name association basically i like when i i like when the hockey player shows up within the
answer which is like exactly i don't know i uh am not capable of thinking about this not for me to
decide that was to know that sounds so bill uh belichickian i cannot wait to uh screenshot that
clip it for when tom wilson delivers an elbow to somebody's head and then they're like how many
games for this hit and tom wilson's not for me to decide not for me to decide baby freak out about
the statement okay the pll championship is this sunday at 12 30 p.m eastern the united states and
canada on espn and we've had pll it's been fun keeping an eye on lacrosse without hockey this
was a fun little project that we've been able to do checking in with pll having some guys on brett
dobson was amazing with us that was so fun uh denver and philadelphia in this one and we are
going to play a conversation that we had with denver defensemen uh
mike manley who you'll see from the as soon as it starts you're going to see him and be like
this is going to be fun it's an absolute blast yep can i interject real quick uh before we get
to facial hair mogging can we do can we do like a brief facial hair mogging segment on brent burns
why what oh yeah brent burns shaved his beard and replaced his teeth and he might now be like the
only person who's ever shaved his beard and he looks so good yeah he looks really good looking
man unbelievable didn't know he had it like that yeah oh it's like this is like the anti james
harden where it's like you remove the beard it's like oh why did you have the beard in the first
place yeah exactly where's james hard and you see that and you're like ah i could you probably
started growing that the second facial hair showed up do you think you saw that just a picture of his
face in a t-shirt you'd be able to tell who that was like if i saw if i saw him in that state walking
down the street walking down the street walking down the street walking down the street walking
down the street i think i would be like that guy looks familiar well there's a weird thing with
like and maybe it was from my beat days where i was like had the bird's eye view and was i could
identify players just from their bodies like their shoulders and everything i don't know if in street
clothes i'd be like oh that's brent burns but brent burns does have the build that would stand
out to you if you walked by them on the street but if you just saw that face i don't think i'm
clocking it's brent burns yeah that's crazy that he just chose not to look like that
for like the last 15 years yeah no i'm married he made some very cool choices i would say yeah
i think he's married with some chickens i think that he made a uh he made some personality choices
yeah it's fun to he had brand yeah right exactly and he stuck to it okay here's our
conversation with mike manley it is a blast let's get ready for the pll championship by
bringing in denver outlaws defender and two-time pll defenseman of the year you know i'm best
from absolutely fucking mustache mogging me right now it's mike manley what's up man how are you
doing guys appreciate you having me on i'm doing horrible you popped i i knew what you looked like
i knew what you looked like and i was like you know what maybe he'll have shaved maybe i don't
know maybe he'll have something going on with his face maybe a distracting tattoo and then you
popped up and i was like well pete you'll be handling this one i look like a little child
yeah you gotta look like a little child
you got a little better hair you got a little better hair than i do though you got some good
flow going on oh i'll take it we both have good eyebrows though so we can there we go we can
meet there yeah you're saying that i should handle this because you look like a little child when i'm
the littlest child in the world right now is tough that is an unbelievable mustache
when have you when did you decide to commit to that how old
oh man probably like eighth grade yeah it started coming in uh it's uh ever since college i think
i uh started growing it and especially with work and stuff like that i can't really have a full beard
so mustache it is it's such a like for you playing defense that's such a and like i know like you can
throw big hits we were looking at the one from uh was it against new york new york yeah where you
just absolutely like murdered a guy to begin the game like that's like i know we're coming from
hockey but like the big burly hulking defenseman with the mustache that fits so well yeah it's uh
it's definitely part of i think my character and i think a lot of people in the stands kind of know
me through that mustache and by my mustache i feel like you could definitely i mean even the name
like mike manly and then you have the manliest mustache of all time like it's pretty unbelievable
i mean have you considered or been offered any acting gigs in like wild west movies
no i haven't but i actually have a couple pictures up on a horse on my instagram so
yeah yeah there we go taylor shepard
and get this man's number uh how have you navigated the uh pushback uh the healthy pushback in society
against toxic masculinity with your last name being manly because for a long time being manly
uh a lot of people would they would wear that proudly uh but pete and i have tried to back
away from anything that could associate us with being manly so people don't get mad at us how have
you navigated it yeah i don't have to worry about that too much like you guys do i'm not on the big
media platform like you guys as much so i'm not too worried about that part i mean you're a
professional athlete who destroys people i think you're you're clearly more historically
traditionally uh defined as manly uh than we are uh you are we saw in the notes we would not have
brought this up but that you are we're the same age but you are technically time is a social
construct you are technically the oldest player in the league as you go through the years you
go into a championship are you thinking like i'm gonna mark recce this thing i'm gonna win
and i'm gonna get out or are you like i'm gonna look did you see any gray in this mustache i'm
gonna play forever yeah i i've been saying that for like the last four years but here i am um
yeah so last year that was it that was the plan and then you know hopefully yeah it all comes true
and it goes the right way this this weekend and uh now i can decide after that it's you know i got a
so it's ultimately talking to them figuring out what's best for them and and then moving forward
from there well i gotta ask what keeps bringing you back uh just the uh i love the sport man i
just i love you so once you step away from that locker room you can't find anything like it you
know it's it's hard to replicate that in in real life um and just the overall i guess the
competitiveness to kind of it'll be my first championship in the in the pll and and professional
lacrosse so just chasing that
still sorry
Are you thinking about it at all?
Like, if you win this one, that'll be it?
Yeah, I'll be on a horse ride into the sunset, for sure.
Dude, I'm loving the horse imagery.
Seriously.
Taylor Sheridan has got a lot of projects,
so he can find a spot for you, for sure.
How well do you do with the old jokes,
being the oldest player in the PLL?
How many do you get?
Is it a problem for you?
This is Pete's way of saying he's got some in the holster.
Like, am I allowed to make any old jokes?
Go right ahead.
I've been here every weekend.
Kyle Hartzell came back this year for a little bit,
so it kind of took the light off me
because he was the oldest for part of the season.
But all last year, and mostly this year,
I still get it from guys I'm covering and all that,
so it doesn't bother me.
All right, let's try this one on for size.
The championship game's at 12.30.
Do you think that you'll be back from dinner in time to get there?
Yeah, I'll be having my espresso for dessert for it.
Nice.
That's not when you go to a track and just walk around it a bunch?
To walk to dinner off, yeah.
No, it's actually. I don't know why I'm making old jokes about you.
You can actually see me at the mall,
and I'll be walking to the mall before it opens up.
Full jumpsuit?
Oh, fuck yeah.
Do you keep playing lacrosse because they give you the free jumpsuits?
Yeah, I mean, we went Nike this year.
I got to get the Nike merch.
It is.
I mean, to do it, to shout out the PLL, like, team store, pro shop,
whatever it would be, the merch is very nice.
I've got a PLL fucking raincoat.
I am praying that it rains every day so I can stunt on.
I just found my quarter zip, like, this week,
stashed in the back of my closet.
It is truly some good stuff.
We do have to mention you are a Buffalo Sabres fan.
Our producer, Sean, diehard Buffalo Sabres fan,
and how good was your year last year?
Oh, it was great.
I mean, we've been in the trenches for so long.
Obviously, the Bills kind of being a Bills fan the last few years,
actually quite a bit now, has been great.
But being a Sabres fan, it's been tough.
But this past season was awesome.
It was really exciting just to be in this general area.
Like, I'm in Rochester, and even from Buffalo, Rochester,
everyone was just so excited about it.
I ended up making it to a place.
I went to a playoff game.
It was awesome.
Which game?
Yeah.
The first series.
I went to the first series.
I went with a buddy of mine.
It was awesome.
We went to games one and two.
Were you at game one for a chance?
No, it wasn't game one.
Shoot, I'm blanking on it right now.
But no, I was there.
They lost that game actually at home, so it sucked.
But yeah, it was the crowd and everything was electric,
so it was awesome.
Yeah, man.
That series was so cool.
Buffalo fans are awesome.
They'll keep it real with you.
Like, when it sucks, they're not going to say,
hey, man, it's okay.
They're like, this fucking sucks.
So getting to see that many people who have been,
what's it called?
Like, the atrium in the key bank?
Like, seeing happy people file into that after a game
is just unbelievable.
They got such a good team.
They should have had you bang the drum instead of Josh Allen
because famously,
he banged the drum.
He banged the drum.
He banged the drum at one of the home games,
possibly the game that you were at
because it was a home game that they lost.
Did you think about getting in there?
Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting invited to that.
I don't know if they know me that well.
Well, settle a bet.
Do you know who William Fickner is?
I do not know.
Fuck me.
He's an actor.
Sean is off screen going nuts.
He's an actor.
You know him from the opening bank scene of The Dark Knight,
among so many other things.
Prison break.
He's great.
He's got a show right now on Amazon or not on Amazon on Apple TV,
but he's like the celebrity super fan of the Sabres
and they'll have him at games
and he'll bang the drum and everything
and we'll be like,
Sean, you see that Fickner was at the game
and Sean's like,
we don't know who that is, man.
Like we're just watching the game.
We don't care.
We're not doing like the New York Knicks thing.
We don't know who our celebrity fans are
and we're like,
yo, I'm talking about.
Yeah, this is really devastating for us.
Not good for us.
We were just like,
we were,
we were blaming the age gap
and like you're old as shit.
So this,
we lose,
we lose it here.
This sucks.
Are you not a movie guy?
I am.
I've just,
I'm terrible with names at times
and just,
just the overall,
like I'm not,
you know,
like I said,
I'm,
you say I'm older,
but I haven't,
I'm not crazy about social media.
I'm not on it all the time.
I don't post all the time,
stuff like that.
So I'm not really hip with the new shit today.
That rules.
Are you,
why aren't you on,
on social media?
Is it,
are you too shy
or is it,
you're trying to live a healthy life?
I'm thinking a little bit of both
and just too much shit pisses me off.
I don't want to be on there.
Just raise my blood pressure.
It's a bad time to be on there then.
It's a bad time to be on there.
Just raise my blood pressure for no reason.
Yeah.
It is crazy.
I saw a tweet today about our show
and it was like,
DJ Bean sucks.
That's me.
And I was like,
it's fucking bullshit.
And then like an hour later,
I saw a tweet that was like,
Pete Blackburn doesn't know anything about hockey.
And I was like,
all right,
even at least social media.
Like I need to see bad news about somebody
to just like even out how negative social media is.
And the best part about that is there was like a thousand good tweets,
nice tweets sent about our show today
and just ignored all of those to focus on the ones that say that he sucks.
It's like,
are you ever,
if you're like looking at a hotel or a product on Amazon or something
and it's like this hotel,
has 4.1 stars.
And you're like,
that means something brought it down and you,
you go and find like 4.1 is good,
but you got to find why is somebody mad about this?
And that's the social media experience.
Yeah.
I was going to say,
if it was because you were shy,
I'd say just get out there,
man,
just volume shoot.
It's what everyone's doing these days.
As long as everyone's agreeing,
they're mad at Sydney Sweeney for an ad.
She did.
We're mad at Arch Manning for good reason.
And I don't know.
I don't know what we're happy about.
I mean,
everybody's talking about how Mitch McConnell famous old guy is like dead.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
But like not there.
They're,
they're a weekend at Bernie and him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's it.
Well,
so that's the most positive thing is that somebody who looks dead,
we all agree is alive.
Mitch McConnell.
Nice.
Yeah.
McConnell.
Slip a little bit in it.
How do you feel about this championship game,
man?
I love it.
Last year was awesome.
I mean,
this year is even better.
We learned,
you know,
you learn from your failure failures.
The experience just being on there for the weekend.
It's a lot,
right?
You have different social media personalities.
They're interviewing you.
You know,
you're in one room.
They're grabbing you over here,
grabbing over there.
You have the end of the year awards on Friday.
So you're kind of,
you're kind of busting into the city.
You have a nice,
you know,
couple of drinks,
nice food,
the whole league's there.
So it's,
it's a lot,
but just experience lit last year.
And then kind of gain that experience and then going,
knowing what to expect this year.
I'm super excited.
I mean,
Philly's a great team.
They really are.
They did a great job in the off season,
putting some guys together.
And then also we got,
you know,
we technically let's let go a couple of their guys and we picked them up and they've been great for us.
So how do you balance like staying within yourself before like a championship game,
but also kind of getting up for it,
but not getting too up for it where you,
you kind of lose yourself a little bit.
Yeah,
that's tough.
Everyone's nervous.
I don't care if they say they're not,
they're fucking nervous,
right?
Like it's a good thing.
No nerves are good.
It means you're excited.
It means you care.
It means you're passionate.
For me,
it's just kind of being even keel,
kind of,
like you said,
being as an older guy,
you know,
not trying to be too emotional,
not trying to be too high up and kind of letting the rest of the guys kind of just see me.
And then just moving forward from there.
But,
you know,
it's,
there's a lot of passion involved in this and something goes wrong.
You might hear me start screaming a little bit,
but it's all passion.
I get after the rest a little bit.
They know it though.
It's not,
it's not directed at them.
It's just passion.
But we,
we kind of go back and forth at times throughout the game.
But yeah,
it's,
it's,
it's overall like you can't beat this experience,
right?
Like this is what we play the game for.
It's do or die.
For many of us,
it's a career defining game.
I know we made like a lot of old jokes,
but I'm asking this question genuinely.
Like what is,
what's changed or like what's your kind of recovery like at this stage of your career?
Because we talked to a lot of older hockey players and some of the answers there are fascinating with like new medicine or like new techniques to kind of stay loose and stay limber and things like that.
So has anything changed in recent years where you're just trying to say,
where you're just trying to stay kind of at the top of your game?
Oh yeah.
I spend way more money on my body.
Just trying to get it right.
Do massages every Wednesday.
This during the playoffs,
I started this acupuncture.
The guy actually works for the bills and works for the Sabres a lot.
I had him back when he first started in Rochester when I was coming off a knee injury.
And then he has his practice now out of,
out of Buffalo.
And he's phenomenal.
He works a lot with,
a lot of athletes just doing a lot of mobility stuff.
I haven't,
you know,
probably my earlier days,
just trying to lift a lot of weight and now i've done more or i'd say less weight i still lift but
less weight more mobility stuff and just kind of getting getting uh hitting the groundwork a little
bit getting the heart rate elevated um and other than that just i really focus on the recovery
aspect of it uh i ask this of every soccer goalkeeper or defender what's the yelling
situation because you brought up like yelling out there if things are going tough what's the
yelling between uh goalie and defenseman situation like on the outlaws oh logan's he's quiet he's
yeah he's very even keel like he's he doesn't yell very much i honestly i don't think i've ever
ever really heard him yell or like go off about anything the only time i hear him yelling is
your positioning or if uh we need a slide or something like that so honestly the only time
i've ever heard him yell
you
which is honestly great as a goalie do you know why i actually i i read an article about this do
you know why he doesn't yell at the defenseman that much you tell me i have no because one of
them is a fucking monster who looks like javier bardem i wouldn't yell at that guy either
i mean i probably coached him when he was in like i i mean i was probably like his camp counselor
back in the day too so he probably was like i'm not yelling at this guy that's amazing yeah because
i always ask like it
with soccer players i'm like why don't you yell back at the goalie like stop yelling at me i'm
trying to play i figured we were talking to i was at dersey who said that like the uh the
defenseman and goaltenders like have a a monthly dinner where they just talk shit about the forwards
and i think that the forwards were having meetings where they were talking shit about the defenseman
and the goaltenders is there any sort of divide in in the outlaws locker room between the forward
guys in the back end uh i think it's more known like we just get after each other a little bit
like especially during practice we'll just chirp each other i feel like that's pretty common amongst
many teams uh we're not quite going to dinner just defensive versus offense i mean most of our
dinners are together as a team we don't have like a ton of guys on the team it's not like we're
splitting up a huge restaurant or anything like that but there's definitely some chirping going
on between the offense and defense and you know whether it's uh they didn't score that many goals
or they let a bunch of transition goals off because they're too lazy to run back to the end
stuff like that like you know the scoreboard moves when we make mistakes they can just you know
dick around and throw the ball away stuff like that like it's all good they take it you know
they don't really take it to heart they they respond really well to it so if you are to win
the championship we know why and if you are to lose the championship we will also know why uh
mike thanks thanks so much for coming on we're looking forward to watching
the championship
between denver and philadelphia sunday at 12 30 p.m eastern on espn thanks so much mike good luck
thank you guys i appreciate it no toxic masculinity we like manly that was a like a
stunning development that a guy that looks like that would vibe with us yes it just just has all
the makings of somebody who would look at us and just be like i don't get time for those fucking
losers no he was in right away he was in right away he was excellent and you can watch him
uh yes we know sorry to cut you off i was gonna say to sort through what we were working through
there it's not javier bardem it's uh it is james dean morgan yeah yeah jeffrey dean morgan jeffrey
james dean yes different different entertainment i'm just shocked you didn't just go straight to uh
daniel day lewis like uh it's very there will be blood mustache yeah well i don't want to
you mustache you uh daniel claimed you a guy but yeah that's he's big

industry what is happening what do you mean what's happening sean what was that that little
jingle song that you were singing you know that song you know daddy would you like some sausage
oh yeah yeah he got fingered pretty got fingered yeah
not familiar no not only movie buffs know damn damn john you should check out freddie got fingered
and report back water dogs and outlaws in the championship sunday you can get that on espn
and uh the outlaws per sports interaction getting one and a half against the water dogs every game
is your game when you bet with sports interaction bet the action on every period every shift every
shot with canada's homegrown sports book sports interaction ontario or alberta
only must be 19 plus in ontario 18 plus in alberta please play responsibly uh yeah outlaws getting
one and a half against the water dogs but what's really interesting to me sean is that the over
under is 22 and a half in the semi-final against utah the outlaws won 11 to 5 so i'm assuming
philadelphia oh i mean philadelphia and boston had a pretty had a bit of a barn burner i have to check
the score of uh what that was but i'm assuming philadelphia is bringing a bit more raucous
philadelphia won 13 to 10 so oh so that's just barely over that 22 and a half that's a that's a
it's a tempting total are we perceived perceiving this as disrespect to our guy uh the manly man
yes because they while the while denver is on the road this is a neutral site game
being played in new jersey i think we just do denver plus one and a half i'm like i'm tempted
for denver straight up right yeah yeah like i'm i'm absolutely rooting for denver just based off
that interview and the manly man him getting a ring getting to retire like he's gonna have to
play forever if he doesn't get a ring in the bl the guy clearly doesn't want to come back next year
yeah he's like i'm just trying to wrap this shit up trying to move on with his life he's got shit
to do he's got a family now he's 84 years old that's right let him stop working every game is
out with sports interaction from punk drop to overtime bet with live odds on every play with
easy deposits and payouts go to sports interaction.com slash what chaos to open an account
ontario or alberta only must be 19 plus in ontario 18 plus in alberta please play responsibly sean if
you would hit me with the super chat starting with karen who says sean leaving what chaos to start
his own podcast with so i we need to vet these before we read them today uh with risillo and
pursue screenwriting jk so excited for whatever is to come and another season of what chaos uh
that reference yes yes uh what is the uh qatar one from ambassador to greece sean can you explain
that qatar no i have no idea what's going on there gota go to oh cutter go to a there you go

that's cutter go to a uh mistaken mexican uh-oh says piss chat tyler your m chuck would love this
indeed he would love your life uh-oh says just smoked three darts
are so back boys shout out carrie price luxury trash says cup come into the island mark my words
drive for five is alive baby not according to the haters not according to which there are apparently
many which there could be them according to the haters reportedly there are some emma haven says
brent burns you were hiding this indeed he was talking about the face karen says if you showed
me a picture of that guy and asked me what i think his name is i would say mike manning
that's the uh mike manly does sound like a um one of those almost friday podcast names when they do
characters like your name is mike manly you are a lacrosse player and state trooper the prophecy
was foretold yes uh smakalka oh no sorry emma says too much lacrosse on my horse podcast
that's on us uh smakalka says i will be at the poll championship
with a group of confused friends lmao thanks for being my intro to the pll and go dogs sorry mike
steph says sean thanks for the support of ku football last weekend hopefully he continues
this weekend in london rock chalk jaywalk jayhawk okay listen folks all the support for kentucky
was as sean pointed out kansas kansas kansas is like yeah we're losing this rivalry but
as is a fun move to do
i'm just gonna say you're racist and what are you gonna say back because anything that you say
says the racist i you were a slave state i so fully support a team being on the losing end of
a rivalry and just official a team counts going to yeah well you guys are fucking racist and evil
people so pick your side and also like john brown i believe was the first person in american history
to be executed for treason but he's a good guy i mean he was a good guy like he wasn't he was a
an abolitionist but i'd love if they just like we ride with that guy also kansas plays my arizona
state sun devils in london this week so it's fuck kansas i don't care if you were just for one week
and then it's back to being rock chalk jayhawk and rock chalk algeria right okay michael curtis
says sean needs to see freddie got finger sausage you do nothing about that i don't know if i want
