033: Sell 10x more with one sentence (with John Meese)
40m 11s
In this podcast episode, John Meece returns to help Matt refine his serve call process, focusing on the final "R" of the six Rs—recommendation. Matt, who has successfully implemented serve calls, struggles with presenting a clear offer for a group coaching program, often over-customizing based on client feedback. John introduces the concept of a "10X promise," a vivid, simple statement that outlines a dramatic transformation by offering a key result without a major roadblock. He explains that this promise must start with a simple verb, be instantly clear (like a "purple elephant"), and directly counter a common fear, such as time commitment or overwhelm. Using examples from his own program and a client call, John demonstrates how to craft such promises. He also stresses the importance of narrowing down a target client to a specific group, using Sean Blanca’s journey as a cautionary tale—Sean failed for months with a broad productivity offer until he focused on creative agency owners and promised "run your full-time business on a part-time schedule." The episode emphasizes that a scalable product requires a specific, compelling promise that resonates with a defined audience, rather than trying to serve everyone. Matt applies this to his own potential program, realizing he must pick a niche and craft a promise that clearly addresses a desired outcome and removes a key obstacle, making the offer both attractive and believable.
[music] I'm so excited to welcome back to the Hakerator podcast and YouTube show. My friend, John Meece, hey John, how you doing man? I'm doing great man, thanks for having me. Awesome, you are our first repeat guest on the show. Well, I'm honored. How about that? I am honored. Yeah, how about that? I'm really excited to talk to you because when you were on the show and you did a session with our community over the summer, this was back in July, you taught us about how to turn sales calls into serve calls. Hey, if you're watching this or you're listening to it in the Hakerator community, there's going to be a link to where you can go watch that first session and there's a link to get a free copy of John's book. Definitely go check that out because everything that we're talking about last time and this time we'll be covered in this content. I was so taken by it that I started doing the program with you. I learned how to do serve calls. I've done four serve calls since then. One of the things that was getting a little stuck on and says, hey, will you come back on and walk me through it and we can also talk through it with the people who are here live on watching on the Hakerator community. Also, when I get to the point where I've done the serve call and it's the six Rs, can you remind us what the six Rs of the serve call are? Yeah, well, the good news is it's actually in the, I plan this so that the table of contents of the book is also the guide. You don't have anything but the table of contents. I have to read the rest, just that part. You've got relationship, results, roadblocks, resources, recap and recommendation. It's sort of a bonus seventh, which is to remember, hearts by first. Yeah. That was something that you helped me with a lot. So you've done a little coaching with me on how to improve my, my serve calls. And it's that recommendation part that I was first doing that is getting a little stuck on now. I was getting a little stuck on. We're working on a program together a group coaching program for Hakerator community members. So if you're interested in that, make sure you book a call with either John or myself. You can do that right, you can do that right away. Our schedules are open to, to talk with you. And the thing though that I was thinking about is like, okay, if I could do a group coaching program with Hakerator and John, but then it also got me thinking about, I've done some coaching before for productivity. I've done some like, I've done some six week, three month mastermind groups. And I started thinking even more about like, what would my, because I feel pretty comfortable with the serve call now. But I was thinking if I was doing it for something that wasn't a creator and I was like taking audience for YouTube channel or from my own newsletter and doing a group coaching program. And I got to the point where for the recommendation that last, that last are the recommendation are like, Hey, I have something that can help you get the result that you want. Would you like to hear what it is? And they say those macabre is like, Yes, tell me more about what you, I was like, then what, what would I say? I was like, Oh, what would you say? I don't know because like in the past and you kind of mentioned to this, it'd be like, I would kind of like customize my pitch based on what they had been telling me. And really not just the pitch, but like the program itself, they're like, Oh, well, we're going to do this. And so like all of a sudden, there would be like this, this new module that would appear out of thin air because someone was like, Oh, I really need help with this thing. And there is, there is something to say for like, okay, you want to custom, you know, make some customizations to your program based on what people need. How do I give them a really clear, compelling offer that is going to be that 10X promise? That's what you call it. Yeah. So, no, have a talk about it. So let's just talk about offers, right? In your products. And actually, I prefer to think about this product because with offers, you can talk about services. And if you're selling a service like, yes, you can have a productized service. But I mean, usually you can customize it, right? You're selling copywriting, for example, or graphic design. There's not a big harm when you customize in the offer for each client because you're selling the output, you're selling the product, you're selling your time, your input. When you sell a product, then where it doesn't matter if you sell one or 10 or 100, it's not going to dramatically change your time investment. You have to be really specific about what the product is so that it's scalable. So with that in mind, let's just, let's talk about the 10X promise because there's different types of promises you want for different products. I guess real quick, let me just give like a one-on-one version of what I teach is that you first want your business is built on what I call a core promise, which is your kind of umbrella statement for like, why you exist, what you stand for, but that's not a specific product. So for me, it's I help entrepreneurs sell your smarts without losing your soul. Okay, that is the umbrella of what I do, but that's not a product, right? That means that when I'm showing up in a podcast like this, I'm speaking from that. That means when I'm writing my email newsletter or a teaching my coaching program, it's all coming from that, we're writing a book. It's all coming from that same worldview. But to tell the product, we need to think so more specific. So we have the core promise and then a, with these other promises from different products, but let's focus on a 10X promise because that's what your typically use to sell a premium program, like a group coaching program for, well, I'll talk this through for everybody's listening to audio, but I can share a notion document and we kind of just like outline this live with that useful kind of to be useful, be useful for me. But yeah, let me let us know in the chat everyone if you're watching live. So even if you're listening in all my door, I will explain what I'm writing out because I think it's always helpful to kind of see it. So for like me, right, my core promise is I help entrepreneurs sell your smarts without losing your soul, but that comes from a template of I help real people solve real problem with real solution. So that's, that's the first thing you have to figure out is sort of like the broad umbrella of what you stand for because the 10X promise is sort of like a, it's a more narrow category within that. But the 10X promises will focus on today. So Matt, let's create one for you. We'll just share a couple examples first, then we can kind of talk about what this might be for you if you had a group coaching program. So the general framework for a 10X promise, and it's called that because it's, it doesn't have to be 10 times anything. It's more of the idea of this is about dramatic change. This is about we're selling someone. People don't buy products. They buy a future version themselves. And so we're want to, this is, you know, like if you're selling a fitness program, this is the equivalent of like rock hard apps. Like what is the transformation? Where's the outcome? Matt, I joke before. Um, I know you have a lot of father contents. This might make sense. I'm not saying this should be your program. But I've, before that a great 10X promise would be like, go from dad, bod to father figure with rock hard apps, you know, like something like, there could be something fun there. But generally, the general framework for 10X promise is to get a key result without a roadblock. So yeah, so like you want, it's, it's, it's actually intentionally designed to create a paradox where I'm saying like you can get what you want without what you're afraid of. So another way to say this would be to get what you truly desire without what you fear. Okay. So I'm not saying like make money without spiders, like even if you're afraid of spiders, like it's a, it's a related fear. What you're trying to tell people it's possible to achieve what they want without the main thing to see is their objective or their not objective, but their objection, like the roadblock. So for me, my 10X promise for Soul.coach club is to earn $10,000 or more per month group coaching 90 minutes per week. Okay. Now a few key things are going on here for this 10X promise to be effective. It starts with a verb. That's really critical. Okay. Another one is that I've actually created a super clear picture of what success is. It doesn't always have to be a number, right? I mean, numbers help because we know what they mean. But the goal here is you just, you create a vivid picture of I know, I know what I want to see it. When you, when you use that verb is do you try and, do you try and make that as simple as possible? Like earn is a really simple verb, really simple word. It's not, it's not achieve or something that's a little more. Yeah. Fancy sounding. Do you think about that specific thing? Right. We want this to flow over your target clients mind and heart, smooth like butter, super simple. Yeah. Just like get desire and like get exactly what you want. Okay. I'll accomplish. It's not a good match. Yeah. Well, yeah, because accomplished could be it maybe, but it's more like summit or whatever the, yeah. So the example I, the framework I usually try to give to evaluate if a 10X promise is vivid enough to be effective is I usually asked my clients like, is it purple elephant clear? And by that, I mean, when I say purple elephant, you can picture a purple elephant. I don't have to describe it or explain it. That's what you want with your next promise. You want to be so vivid that it's not just sort of this like gray, hazy shape. You're like, oh no, I can see it in my mind. Yeah. And know what this looks like. But one thing I want to highlight is that notice the template is get result without roadblock. But in my next promise, I'm saying earn $10,000 per month group coaching. So that's the result. And then I say 90 minutes per week. So actually about the work without because I basically tell you the opposite of that because what a lot of fears I could focus on. But one is it's going to be super time. It takes so much time. Super overwhelming. Yeah, exactly. So if I can do it in 90 minutes per week, I've overcome the most common fear people have about. Yeah. So do you have any questions about the 10X promise before we start getting into your specific? No, I'm happy for anyone in the chat to drop anything that you might have a question about in regards to this. But I like the, and you hit this for me when we did our coaching on my surf call a couple of weeks ago was keep it simple. Stop talking. Don't oversell. And what has just been re-emphasized for me, you're saying like use simple words, have it like be purple purple elephant clear. I also thought of the one of my first Seth Godin books was purple cow. And he's like, when you go back.
he used the description of remarkability. Like, you don't have to explain it, but it's also like, if you go past, and you say, there's a purple cow, you're going to make a remark about it, but it is something that's, because it's something that stands out and you don't really have to explain it. - Yeah, so just to give a real example, this literally 30 minutes ago, I wasn't a call with a potential client, and he was kind of struggling with figuring out what his 10X promise might be, 'cause we were talking about him and his wife for first time immigrants, they have this podcast on how to be first time immigrants, it's just that was their family in America. And we kind of learned on this idea about the end of the call of what if it's all about establishing a new family dynasty in America? Whoa, now we just took all their examples of how we figured out how to get jobs, how to blend our past culture with our current culture, how to establish a family, how to communicate about the fact that we're living in America, but we're not from America, how to build roles, that just learned about the tax system, what if you could create a new family dynasty in America? It gives everything power, right? He's still debating on whether or not that's gonna be his promise, but he was pretty convicted by that call. So we'll say, I like it. - Yeah, so I wanna talk about yours, Matt. - Okay. - So let's talk about like if you had a program, one thing I thought I find to be super helpful is to start by making a list of what your target client wants, like the result they want, and what are the revocs in the way. But let's first actually talk about who your target client might be, 'cause that's obviously like, we have to decide that first for any of the stuff to make sense. So who would your target client be, when you think about like Matt Raglan, the bullet journal of YouTube guy, starting a group coaching program? - Yeah, my target client is someone who has a lot of information to organize and track. They have a lot of projects or tasks that they're involved with, and need slash want to get done. They are a high achiever, where they're wanting to do the thing that will like help them achieve more. They wanna get a promotion. They want to get a better degree. They want to start a side hustle or a business. They want to get tenure. They want to pass. - Okay, okay, so let me just pause right there. So what you told me are all good things, but that is a lot of different people. Like specifically the last one, I was kinda feeling that already. I was like, I feel like we're talking about potentially an option of a menu of potential target clients, but then you mentioned that either you wanna start a side hustle or a business or a tenure, and I'm like, okay, now we're definitely talking about different things. - Yeah, yeah. - So this is where a group coaching program comes in. A 10X program comes in. Is it does kind of force you to get super specific of literally thinking about a real human being, real people, a real human being that you're like, man, if I could serve five or 10 of that person, that man or woman in my program, I could really help them. - Yeah, and that's hard because there are a lot of problems you could solve. You kinda just have to pick. - Yeah, and especially for something, I think that's true. And especially, so there are two things that come to mind for me, and one of them is to kind of pull back the curtain on this a little bit, even to say, when you use that number like five to 10 people that you could help on this, that is a pretty small amount of people. Now how you get to those people can vary widely, but if you're telling me Matt, you've got an email list, can you find five people on that email list? - Yeah, exactly. - Yeah, I probably could. So it gives me the opportunity to think about what very specific problem, like just narrow it down even more. And what makes, I think, so that was the first thing. The second thing is like, this is kind of the challenge of having at times like a broader type of niche. Is even though I talk mostly about the bullet journal and a log action is another term I've latched onto, it's still like productivity. And so that's why you kind of heard me rattling off some different things. It's like, and I think this has hurt me some in the past, is that there is a sense of like, hey, I want to give you productivity principles that you can apply for any of these things, but people buy more specific outcomes than just, hey, I can be more generally productive. - Yes, I think this is a great time to bring in Sean Blanca as an example. If he's also a productivity guy that's around forever, his most important product is called the Focus Course. - Focus course. - And you can use the focus, I've taken the focus course, great course. There's all kinds of different people in there. I've based a lot, based a lot of what I've done. - Yeah. - Kind of following Sean's example. - Oh, awesome. I didn't even know that. Okay, so that's great. So Sean's been productivity in the productivity space for over a decade, I think like 15 plus years, I think it's point. You know, blogging, teaching, coursing, coaching. And when I started working with him, he had already actually spent about nine months trying to sell a group coaching program. And he has a huge audience. The time I think he had 30 or 40,000 subscribers. Now he has 55,000 new subscribers. Super engaged. When he says a lower priced course or book, like a challenge or a resource or tool for $27 or $100, he gets hundreds of people to buy it. But when he started launching a higher ticket mastermind, saying like, okay, this is $500 a month or $5,000 a year. He was crickets. He had the first time he launched it, he got a few people to sign up just because they were super fans, but he really have a clear offer. And then he was like, amazing, I'm gonna do it again. And then he got nine months, he'd had one paying client from nine months of effort. - Yeah, and that's kind of like, that is a pretty clear mirror to like, when I've done group coaching in the past. The super fans signed up the first and second times. And then it's like, okay, we're done. - Yeah, yeah. So it's Sean, what he had to do when we worked together is, well, first of all, it was too complicated how he was selling. It was like, it was like the webinar and the application funnel, if the whole way you're sort of supposed to do it, where you have a complicated funnel to sell your program. And I just had him delete all of that. I was like, no, we don't need that. Just throw that away. - Yeah, I like something. - And so we just sent, well, first of all, we had to spend some time on what is the 10X promise, right? So we had to keep getting clear. He's like, well, I can help people accomplish more. I'm like, well, why? Like, why do you want to accomplish more? And then it's like, well, we had to realize, okay, in his audience, there are these huge different lists of all the different people that he can help us, people who in jobs, there's people who own businesses, there's people who are designers or photographers. - Yep. - And ultimately, he narrowed down and said, okay, I have a core group of creative agency owners. And he picked them. He could have picked any category, but he picked agency owners. And he's like, what do they want? And we started working through it. I'm like, well, they want to get work done because they want to delegate, they really want to grow their business. But when you hear when you're an agency owner and someone says, hey, I can help you grow your business, Matt, can you imagine when your initial reaction to that might be of like what's your gut feel? Like someone's like, hey, let's double your business and you're an agency owner. - All right. What's that? The panic overwhelm? - Yeah, panic overwhelm or just like not really believing them. They're like, okay. And maybe it's just the number of like random DMs that I get in like Twitter and LinkedIn, promising these things. And like, I don't know, man, we'll see. - Well, let's just say you did believe them for a minute. If they were like, hey, I can get you 20 new clients tomorrow. What problems does that create for you? - Yeah, onboarding, expectation, yeah, overwhelm. That's the sort of thing for sure. - Yeah, exactly. So for Sean, he decided it's run your full-time business. Because he, at first, he was like talking about growing your doubling, but he realized, no, it's like, that's a lot for people to wrap their head around. So let's just say like, let's run your full-time business. How did he say it? Part-time schedule? - Run your full-time, on a part-time schedule. Yep, run your full-time business on a part-time schedule. - So even though he actually doesn't say agency owners, but he knows that's his target. 'Cause that's who resonates with that statement. And that's, and now he's had, I think he's on his fourth sold out cohort of that program. And I recommend people start with five or 10 people. He, the first time, was like, I'm gonna start with 25. And I was like, Sean, you're crazy, but he did it. And then he was like, turns out, that's crazy. And so he came back and he lowered it to like, I think he did 15 people. The second time it maxed it out. It was like, then it sold out. - Yeah. - But yeah, so, but yeah, but that's become a huge business model for him now to teach what his business is, this program. His program's called Focus Like A Boss, but the name is not that important. The problem is actually what sells it. I mean, the name's kinda cool. - Right. - But, you know what I'm saying? - Yeah. - It's not that necessary. - Yeah, run your full-time business on a part-time schedule. It's like, that creates his paradox, right? Where it's like, do you wanna run your full-time business? Like, if like, you can run what you're doing now. So he's saying like, hey, I'm not, I mean, I'm not telling you you can grow. But here's the thing. You're thinking about that and you're like, okay, I can run my full-time business on a part-time schedule. It's like, wait a minute. I guess that I could grow and still work like 30 hours a week. - Yeah. - Or I could keep it at its current level and work 10 or 20 hours a week. - Yeah, he's doing both of this. - Spend more time with your kids. And I've also noticed that like you, on that 10X promise of the one that you have for Sean and the one that you have that for group coaching, they both kinda invert the roadblock. So they remove it without saying it. - Yes. - I will say that is sort of like a pro tip. Like version two or version three. - Yeah. - Usually you can do that. But it's hard to start there. - But I would've said, like run your full-time business without working, without working overtime. So like that's the, that's the roadblock is like, I'm gonna work out. - Yeah, so I have another one. - Yeah, exactly. I've got another guy running a launch computer right now that's like, multiply your agency profits without burning out. Or he has a version, without working weekends, I think is what. He's got different versions. He's playing off right now. - Right. - So, but again, like going back to the family dynasty example, it doesn't have to be business related. Or like, Mark and Jill Savage, they have a program that's focused on helping you and your spouse become marriage mentors. And so it's like that's sort of like the ultimate call to greatness where it's like, yeah, you want a healthy marriage? Yes, but like you want to help marriage so healthy that you become mentors in your community for one of the people that are coming to you to advice about improve their marriage. Like that is a high bar.
And that's kind of what we're looking for is you want to call people to greatness. So with that, who do you think might be a target client that we could run with? So it does change it a little bit because now I'm thinking something that is maybe a little more creator oriented. And maybe that's just because of the mindset that I'm in right now just as as a as a person, it could be like, you know, start start your side hustle without quitting your job. Oh, yeah, okay. Let's try some examples. Successful side hustle. Like people probably want to quit their jobs. Yeah, but maybe before you quit your job. Yeah. And I will say here's the thing. Whenever you can get this is what an opportunity to get purple elephant clear. And if you catch yourself using an adjective like successful, like how so? Right. We got it. We got it. We want to make it purple elephant clear. So you could then define success. Yeah. And the numbers are always like the easiest thing to do because they're clear and short. So it could be like $1,000 a month side hustle or yeah, earn one K per month. I like the lesson there. But yeah, it could also be build your personal brand on on the results. Become a become a new expert. Yes, become a new expert. Yeah. So that one actually reminds me a lot of like my Pacquiao in program. So his to next promise I'll put his up here to his to next promise. I have to pause. I can't talk while spelling his name like Pacquiao. There we go. Okay. Equals create an unforgettable signature talk. That will earn you instant trust with any audience. And so it's very specific. I'm like, we're going to create one talk, but it's going to be an unforgettable signature talk. So we're going to instant trust with any audience. Now you can use that on podcasts. You can use that on stages, which I've done because I went through this program. Right. Yeah, this happens like one in this episode is like a helps me to create a program. It's like so good. I'm like, dang it. I got to join that now. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Mike's always helps. Yeah. I went through it before I did my my convert kit talk or kit kit. Oh, awesome. I should say. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Kit formed the convert kit. That's right. Okay. Yes. They converted kits that they converted to kits. Yeah. As a creator, one of the most important things I've learned is that it's impossible to be on this journey alone. I needed other creators in my circle for accountability for support to learn from and to grow with. And this is why we started the Hey creator community. It's a place to connect with like-minded creators to follow a proven roadmap of success and get the support you need to build your creator business. For more information, just go to HeyCreator.com/community. You know those awesome Hey creator newsletters that go out once or twice a week. The ones that sign off from me, Matt Ragland. Well, I'm not really writing those, not directly anyway. The reason those newsletters sound so much like me is because they're coming directly from the back catalog of content. And I have the team at Automatic Evergreen to thank for that. They research, write, edit, and send weekly newsletters on our behalf so that I can spend more time on the podcast and more time in the community. If you're looking to send high converting newsletters that make you money, you can book a call at AutomaticEvergreen.com. Let me ask you, you've already been helpful about this, but I wonder if we can pull back the curtain a little bit for people who are watching. So you're doing what are you doing right now with me to help me understand what my target client can be? Because the other thing, like if you're a part of HeyCreator and you're watching this, then one of the things that we're going to do, one of the things that we're going to do next is after you've watched as you kind of worked through it, we're going to do like coaching with John. So it's not just like me talking to John will be will be in a zoom webinar. We'll be able to like have these conversations. But I want you to be able to think about it because even I'm pretty good at this, but I'm still kind of sitting here thinking like, huh, this is like something important to consider. And I'm also someone who I know just like kind of talks off the cuff, maybe a little bit more than I should. So I really want to consider this. And so as you're watching it, yeah, I want you to really be considering who is my target client. What kind of results? What are the roadblocks? So what are you doing with me right now to help bring that out of me, but also like pushback when I'm getting a little like off track? I think so that is just to keep my own. So one of the things I'm doing is I try to keep principles for how do you recognize what works once doesn't. So purple elephant, like I mentioned those few different times, like that's a guideline of like I'm asking every time you've mentioned something, I'm like, is this purple elephant clear? Is purple elephant? Yeah. Another thing I'm looking for is I want to make sure we're not selling the medicine, but we're selling the cure. So we didn't get into this yet. But like when you mentioned build your personal brand, a personal brand isn't mean so, right? Yeah. Like what does that mean? You know, like why? Um, personal brand, I think can become something, but that's why I mentioned my pack of examples. It's like create a talk. I say you should talk even, but why? Well, that does build your personal brand. It does. It does. But it's like taking that and just sort of like creating something because Mike had teach you how to like the he could his program could be focused on helping you become, uh, become an unfriicable speaker. But because you hyper focus on this one outcome that you're like, I can picture that of that being the outcome. It makes it easier for you to buy into. So what I'm trying to do here is really just say like let's just start with guardrails and these templates and create like a rough draft. And the truth is right now in this call, we don't need to create a final version of your channel. You know, you're trying to create a new version of your channel. You're trying to create a new version of your channel. You're trying to create a new version of your water. Well, what kind of brand is it? And so I didn't go on to say, I basically what I was doing is going on to say, I, it's reverse osmosis. And it has, like, the pH level is, you know, and I'm right. It's from this spring. And then well, hold on. I didn't know is from that spring. You gotta tell me more about the spring. You're introducing objections on the more hard water I'm doing on here. Yeah. Yeah. It's been like, your thinking, the more you like the water. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Because the more you're officially sure you introduce objections. And so it's really critical to have a really clear, but you have to share a bunch of information if you don't have a clear to next promise. Yeah. Because the text promise captures the picture of like, do you want to, do you want to climb out Kilimanjaro? Right? Like what is that thing that you're like, do you want to climb out Kilimanjaro without dying or breaking any limbs without any injury? Yeah. So I'm thinking a little bit more from the productivity side. Because that's really what I want to try and focus on for this and not get to distract it on the creator side just for purposes of this. Yeah. Well, wait, can you, can you just, you can challenge me to think about it in a different way. So we can totally go for the down the rabbit trail, but just what you shared before it. Let me just share a drop to the 10X promise for you to consider. And then we can kind of play with that however you want. But so Matt's 10X promise version one, earn one K per month documenting your workflow on YouTube. What do you think about that? Yeah. That sounds, that sounds pretty good. I would probably, yeah, I would change. So I'd wonder about changing like, I don't know about workflow as a word, but I do like, earn one K per month documenting. And it's like the your on YouTube. So what is it? Or documenting? Well, one K working in public on YouTube, documenting, you can see your work documenting your work or like the, what is the word that I'm looking for? Earn one K per month documenting your work on YouTube. Because like that, that part, when you said that, that was really, that was really interesting. Because that does like put together a lot of things. Yeah, it captures like what you, like you, you talk about productivity, most of the things in the lens of like, here's what I'm doing. You talk, you have a big YouTube audience. You know, and then it's like the monetization piece is helpful as part of that. But also here's the thing. Like when you say earn a thousand miles a month, you know, when you say documenting your workflow on YouTube or something like that, it makes it kind of non threatening where it's like, oh, so I'm actually going to do more work. I just have the document I'm already doing is like documenting documenting your story. Is that to, is that to like, broad or vague or like ethereal? Yeah. Like what is my story? Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, what is my story? I don't know. It's not a memoir. Yeah. And so like, it's probably, is it too big then to also like, documenting your life? Does that sound like to like, now I got a report to keep it? I got a lot of stuff now. And I get images of Casey Neissat burned out in my head. Like when you say document your life, I'm just like, I don't want that or Gary Vee, you know, like, but this is the second one you need to do, Matt, is like, you take an idea and you wrestle through it. You're like, is that it? And you kind of just, you kind of like, you take out words, you try other words. Yeah. But what I like about this is to kind of explain why it could work for a minute is the, the documenting your workflow on YouTube, it makes it like super specific and purple elephant clear, where I'm imagining myself like screen sharing or just like talking brief. And I'm like, that sounds casual. That sounds easy. Yeah, it's like, I would, I would use, I mean, this is getting a little bit more into the weeds, I think, but I would say like, think of it like sharing an Instagram story more than like traditionally published vlog.
sort of thing. Yeah. It's very like it's not like, okay, now I gotta get, I gotta put my camera here and I gotta get my $500 mic here and I gotta like have the tripod there instead. It's like, hey, yeah, instead of holding your phone like this, just hold it like this and talk and then like use use loom or whatever. Like record record what you're doing. Put your phone here. Like all you need is a phone to be able to to be able to do this. Pat Flenn actually talked about this in this Mar-Pasitive Income or his get-on-secondus letter this morning about the diary method of just saying like if you're trying to like just just just have a public diary of like here's what I'm doing. Yeah. And that's how he's built his whole business basically. Yeah, but I wouldn't be, I like that framing that wouldn't be yeah, that's a little that's a little like you didn't say with your with your public diary that's kind of like back to my life. Well that never backs like, but that is kind of like what you're what you're doing. But just for yeah, talking maybe I'm coming around to a little bit more. But yeah, it's something it's something in that way. It's like show show me what you're doing. Let me like just look over your shoulder. Yeah. Well, and it's sort of like selling the sawdust. Right. It's like this whole idea that it's like you're already doing the stuff. Right. And that's kind of what I like about workflow too is like if I'm like documenting my work, I'm like, okay, I'm like, then am I am I am I go to like, oh, I have to teach you how to write a book. Because I read books or I have to teach you how to like do you know write a newsletter because I write new letters. But if I say document I workflow, I'm just like, oh, I just need a screen share how I plan my day and show you my planner, you know, maybe maybe show you around my office of like the different workspaces I have for different things I do. I'm like, right, that's unsuperasy. I let's talk about that stuff. I never talk about that stuff. And if you see earned a thousand dollars a month, a it's a meaningful amount of money, b it's a low enough threshold that I'm like, that's believable. Yeah. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to make it. But I believe you that is possible. Like, maybe you tell me just I can learn that from just from YouTube ad sense. Maybe you tell me a couple templates that I'm selling for my workflow templates ad sense sponsorships brand deals. Yeah. You're saying like, Hey, like I just I just signed a I just signed a thing today to do for a productivity app that like would be a part of my workflow. And they're going to pay me a thousand bucks to talk about it for two minutes. That's amazing. I there's probably all kinds of apps I use that I pay for. Yeah, that I would probably willing to do that. Yeah. Yeah. And the next other thing is too is that you're focusing on earning because we're talking about making a financial investment of getting coaching with you. And so it's helpful if you can put a dollar in a broad it. I mentioned really you don't have to. It is helpful if you can. But here's the thing is that I know when you tell me, if you told me that you're like, Hey, you can earn a thousand dollars a month just documenting your workflow on YouTube. Immediately, my mind goes like, Oh, cool. And I'm assuming earning also means growing my YouTube subscribers. Yep. And getting more views. Right. And doing more email subscribers. Like that's sort of like implied because it's all part of that picture. Yeah. And so that's why I think it's really compelling. I mean, heck, I just just actual candid story here. I have zero YouTube strategy. I use my YouTube account basically just to like watch SNL and then to like host replays of workshops that I do. And that's it. But like recently, I posted a replay of a workshop that I hosted. And they got 2000 views and it's already led to multiple paying clients. I was like, Oh, maybe I should actually have a strategy here. Yeah. I don't know. You should. So for anyone who's watching this or John's for you, I'll make sure that you have access to it. It is like Tim girl session from the Hey creator summit earlier this year. Yeah. Was like all all about that. And how he does this for story grid. And I think he's at like 20,000 subscribers now. But he started from, you know, from scratch, like basically like where where you're at. He's like post things occasionally. And I think he's at 20,000 subscribers now. And you know, he talks about something very niche as well. I mean, writings, writing, I guess is pretty popular. But really like his paid program is how to be a great editor, not even like a great writer. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. Should we talk about roadblocks is like, let's, let's keep moving on like this V1, V1.1. Yeah. And so, well, let me just yeah. So I think if we were just to kind of say like if we're just running this as your with this as your thanks, probably. It's due to that for a couple of years month documenting your workflow on YouTube. Yeah. It already tell has the roadblocks implied in it because it's telling me what I normally would assume are the roadblocks are like, I have to create something new. It's complicated. And I'm already busy. Yeah. Do I need to invest in complicated production gear like cameras. But if, but we already kind of answered all that because we just say just like just documenting your workflow on YouTube. It's like, oh, yeah, that's like that should be super simple. And maybe you don't say on YouTube, maybe you just say online. I don't know. I kind of like the YouTube. I do, I do, I do too, because it's like, and this is something that I've talked with clients about for other things like anytime you can introduce a term or a frame that is going to like naturally narrow your audience or your prospects even more in a good way, then like take that opportunity. It's like someone I was just talking to a client yesterday and he's like super into AI and that's who he works with clients with. He's like, Oh, I should probably like I did this whole thing in chat GPT, but I don't like, I want to be able to give them like a web form instead. I was like, do you want to work with someone about their hiring you for AI unless they're just like, Hey, do everything for me. I don't want to touch it. But if you're going to be working with someone, they're like, Oh, I don't know how to do anything in chat GPT or like fill in the blank. Do you really want to work with that person if you're going to have to explain it every time he's like, No, I was like, Yes, send them the link, send them the GPT because if they can't figure it out, then that's not yeah, that's not a person that you want to work with because I don't like in this example, I'm going to be like, Okay, well, if you're if you're putting it on all right, now let's talk about how to put it on this other platform or let's talk about how to do this. I'm just getting away from the core, the core promise. Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And it's nice too because like if someone's like really addicted or they're really fixated on the fact that they want to also push their stuff on TikTok, they can also interpret that. They're going to like, Well, this is going to teach me YouTube, right. And I can figure out how to adapt that to TikTok. And that's on that's fine. So let's just talk about your next step, Matt. Okay. So launch this program. Is it yes to send an email? This is called a hand razor. So this is specifically called the one at 10x hand razor that you need to send to your list. And it's the goal is basically to test it to next promise and give people to reply. There's no links. There's no formatting. The whole email is, you know, Hey, whatever their name is. Hey name. Hey, Matt, would you be interested in working with me to earn a thousand dollars per month documenting your workflow on YouTube, Dash, Matt? That's the whole email subject line. Okay. Yeah, that's the whole email. That is 100% the whole email. It's done. I've had people send this and get dozens of replies. I've had people send this and get over 300 replies. So you have to be prepared for that. But the client I'm thinking about, um, getting his last name, Austin sailor, I think his name was. Oh, yeah. So he's great. Yeah. So he said this email during a bootcamp that I taught, like literally on the lunch break, he said the email was like, Hey, would you be interested in working with me? Uh, and I think his thing was like to earn an extra $50,000 as a motion graphic designer. Right. And he got over 300 replies. And he just like, just spend a week replying to people to look good. So let's throw about 3000 emails subscribers. Okay. So then he whittled that down to the people that were like after a couple follow questions, like my favorite go to follow question is, Okay, well, I'm glad you're interested. Tell me more about yourself in your current situation. Most people just don't reply to that. And so if you do get a lot of replies, you say that. I mean, the people who do reply and they give you their life story, you're like, awesome. Let's jump on a call. And then he used that to sell out his coaching program just with that one email. And then a handful of circles. So the subject line you want to ideally, like kind of a fallback is you can just say a quick question. But honestly, it's better if you can have a curiosity trigger that's related. So like, you know, sell your sawdust or let's see what's in the way you could say. Yeah, something along the lines of your, yeah, you're already, you're already doing everything you need to do to make a thousand dollars. That might be too wordy, but something like that. That's, yeah, we want something really like two or three words ideally, but you're right. Like the kind of capside idea. I feel like, you know, your workflow on YouTube, maybe or your, let's see your, yeah, I mean, maybe it's just this like, I mean, that's it. Like, I feel like there's something of this like live stream your sawdust. I feel like it might be a really interesting one. I'm like, wait, what? So that's it. That's your next step, Matt. Okay. I love that. That's great. So what's right. I will try it. That sounds great. Okay. All right. And y'all, if you're, if you're watching this and you're like, okay, I'm thinking about what my 10X promises, I think about the results, the roadblocks. This has been really helpful. If you want, John, or I to walk through this with you, then go ahead and book a call. Book a call. You can do that right away. And our, you know, calendar, calendars are open. We have space to talk with you about this specifically. The other thing that you can do is we're also going to have another call with John that is more like group oriented, zoo. We wanted to get like all of the big picture stuff out on this call and then give you something to work on and think about before we come together as a group. So if you want one on one, if this really like is hitting for you and you want someone on one, like engagement and advice and like direction from from John or myself, go ahead and book a call or join us next time. We're going to update everything in hate creator, but join us next time. And we can going to do all of this and more of a meeting group setting than like, then what we what we've done right here, which is a little bit more like again, like make sure. Podcast Summary
Key Points:
John Meece returns as the first repeat guest to discuss improving "serve calls," a method for turning sales calls into service-oriented conversations.
The six Rs of a serve call are relationship, results, roadblocks, resources, recap, and recommendation, with a bonus seventh: remember hearts first.
Matt struggles with the recommendation step, specifically how to present a clear, compelling offer for a group coaching program without over-customizing or overselling.
John introduces the "10X promise," a vivid, simple statement that promises a key result without a main roadblock, designed to sell premium programs.
Examples include John’s promise
The 10X promise must start with a simple verb, be "purple elephant clear" (instantly understandable), and address a specific fear or objection.
Matt’s target client is initially too broad (anyone needing productivity), and John advises narrowing to a specific group, like creative agency owners, to make the offer scalable and compelling.
A case study with Sean Blanca shows that a broad productivity promise failed for months; narrowing to agency owners with the promise "run your full-time business on a part-time schedule" solved it.
Summary:
" The episode emphasizes that a scalable product requires a specific, compelling promise that resonates with a defined audience, rather than trying to serve everyone.
Matt applies this to his own potential program, realizing he must pick a niche and craft a promise that clearly addresses a desired outcome and removes a key obstacle, making the offer both attractive and believable.
FAQs
The six Rs are relationship, results, roadblocks, resources, recap, and recommendation, with a bonus seventh R which is to remember hearts by first.
A 10X promise is a vivid, dramatic transformation promise for a premium program, framed as 'get a key result without a roadblock,' such as earning $10,000 per month with only 90 minutes of work per week.
Start with a simple verb, define a clear and vivid picture of success, and use the template 'get result without roadblock' to address the main fear or objection of your target client.
Being specific helps you create a compelling offer that resonates with a real person, making it easier to find and serve them, as opposed to trying to appeal to a broad audience with varied needs.
A core promise is your umbrella statement for why you exist, like 'sell your smarts without losing your soul,' while a 10X promise is a specific, narrow offer for a particular product that promises a dramatic transformation.
Sean simplified his complicated funnel, got clear on his 10X promise, and narrowed his target to creative agency owners, ultimately focusing on the promise 'run your full-time business on a part-time schedule.'
