SEC and Big Ten QB Rankings, Ty Simpson’s Debut, and More NFL Preseason Rookie Reactions

For our intents and purposes, summer's over. Rins refined repeat, it's what I always tell you, mench, you know, quarterbacks have to do it in the off season. So do we, as a show, and I feel like we've done a really nice job. We're back from Montana, what a wonderful trip. We'll share a little bit of that today. We've got the top 10 quarterbacks in the two best conferences in college football. PCC in big 10 and we're peeking into the training camps a little bit. Ty Simpson, some other standout rookies, what they're doing so far this summer. Just 255 days until the NFL draft. Bench, you good? We're back, baby. I couldn't be better. Roll that thing, tuck. We also, in addition to two-and-a-half decades of studying tape and knowing what we're doing a little bit, it's what we spend our summers doing. But we have all these things because we've been studying the tape this summer and when Munch hasn't been taking lazy river rides down the Yellowstone River and ATVs around. ATVing around with bandanas and fly fishing and everything else. And I went and joined them for a few days and it was absolutely wonderful. It was kind of like a team building exercise, if you will, and happy birthday to you, Munch. Thanks, man. The Big 5-0. 28. It's awesome. Excited. Happy anniversary, too. It's been a big month for Munch. It's been the month for Munch. Thanks, man. But it's over, bud. It's over. That was quick. Okay. Good. But I couldn't help but sitting in Clark Cabin in Montana overlooking the beautiful majestic mountains in the background, the Yellowstone River just kind of lazily flowing around me, that everyone seems to be creating their own rankings, right? And everyone's got their SEC quarterback rankings and their Big 10 quarterback rankings. And it pissed me off. I don't know why. I'm immature. I'm competitive. I'm like, yeah, like at least at least you're throwing your hat in the ring. You know, it's easy to snipe and then not put your rankings out. You know, today you'll put your rankings out and you'll explain why they may be different than other people's rankings. And so let's start right there. Let's go with the SEC. Let's not waste any time. SEC. Top 10 quarterbacks. You're looking at if you're watching on Netflix, if you're watching on Spotify, appreciate you being here. If you're listening on Apple, I'll rip through them real quickly. We're going to that chamblis, my number one SEC quarterback. Now, I want to remind everybody and we'll keep this graphic up for a second, tuck. I want to remind everyone, this is not, we've gone through our quarterback rankings and the preseason for the NFL draft. This is the way I want to frame this is as you see, Trinidad Chamblis coming in at one from Ole Miss, Arch Manning at two, Texas, number three, Lenora Seller, South Carolina, Gunnar Stockton, four, Georgia, Sam Levitt, five, LSU. Followed by the back, the back five, if you will, in this top 10, John Mathieu, Oklahoma, Marcel Reed, Texas A&M, Byron Brown, transfers into Auburn, Austin Simmons. And then finally, Kenny Minchi, another transfer. Remember, we talked about him a lot, even in the preseason last year, maybe, maybe could steal the starting job from CJ Carr. Minchi becomes the backup there. Bill Stein comes over from Oregon where he, we couldn't, you know, trump it what he did more in Oregon than we have. And you talk about three quarterbacks that he got the best of. The transformation of Bonix to a first round pick, number 12 overall. Taking Dylan Gabriel, kind of this journeyman and making him a third round pick and he kind of watching with the Browns right now and you're like, I think Will Stein got the best of Dylan Gabriel. And then lastly, Dante Moore, what he did. So Minchi with Will Stein, it can tuck he comes in at number 10. And then I put an honorable mention here because we don't even know who the starter is going to be yet at Alabama hearing a little bit more about Keel and Russell than we are Austin Mac. A lot of upside with Austin Mac Keel and Russell. It may be a little bit more like experience. They think like a little bit more ready. Sounds like Russell might have a little bit of an edge after that first big scrimmage, but we'll, we'll see how that plays out. So that's the top 10 and I started it by saying these are not draft rankings. I would not have Marcel read that high, I would not have Gunner stocked in that high. We did our draft rankings earlier in the summer, you can go back and watch all of those shows on Netflix, Spotify, Apple, wherever you get your podcasts. Deep dives, pitting two quarterbacks, you know, head to head against one another and you'll see where we landed with the top about 14 quarterbacks, right, for the draft. This isn't about that. How did I frame this? So you have an understanding mentioned. We haven't even talked about this. It's more so like, it's part of what pissed me off about some of these rankings that I was watching. It felt like everything was being hedged. Like, yeah, of course this guy's going to have a really successful season, wins and loss wise and maybe, you know, in the Heisman race or all that because his team is great around him. But I'm talking about kind of value. Like, what would this team be without this individual? What does this player have to add in terms of his skill set, his experience, what he brings to the table? And so with that in mind, man, when you look at that top 10 quarterback list in the SEC, what do you agree with? Probably more importantly and better for the pod, what do you disagree with? What jumps out at you? There's a lot I agree with and we'll get to that in a second, but you should know what's coming down the pipe right now. I mean, you should know what actually don't because I think it's a perfect list. Of course, you do the not like the Quentin, her team movie, Pulp Fiction. There's a guy named Jules Winfield in that, you know, member Jules Winfield. Oh, yeah, yeah. And there's a stick up scene at a diner and they take his wallet and he's explaining to the guy. He wants his wallet back. He says, I want you to go back in that bag and get my wallet and he says, which one isn't? And he says, it's the one that says bad motherfucker and they pull the wallet out and it actually says bad motherfucker on it. And obviously it does because that's who Jules is. Lenora Sellers is maybe the best quarterback in the country. He is certainly the best quarterback in the SEC. He is him. I don't understand looking at it. I understand just basically the argument that you made, arts has got a better supporting cast. You know, he's got a great play collar in Sark. I understand all that. If you're giving me same play collar, same head coach, same supporting cast, there's no one I'm taking over Lenora Sellers because he can do things that no one else can do. And again, I will harp on this over and over again until I believe differently. He is a better pocket passer than people give him credit for. So you have the arm strength. You have the ability to shake defenders off the ability to take off when he gets a crease. And then you add that he's better playmaker from the pocket than people realize I'm sorry. Lenora Sellers has got to be at the top of this list. Now, I'll transition really quickly to say that the guy you put there, Chameless is as close that he's definitely number two. I love that you had Chameless there. I mean, it's because a lot of people will look at him and say, if you're doing this for a draft standpoint, he's not the biggest guy. He's not going to be as highly rated as some other quarterbacks on this list. But watching Tritidad Chameless has filmed this summer, I was blown away by how advanced that kid was by the end of the year and his ability to make decisions. And then you add all of, to make quick decisions, make the right decisions, deliver the ball accurately. And then you add that element of being able to, to make guys miss extend plays and the balls on that kid. I mean, just the absolute balls on that kid. So I like that you had Chameless as high as you did. I just don't think there's anyone better than Sellers. Here's why I did this for college football, right? And I hear you. But there's this proven element that I don't think any other quarterback in the SEC has and you could argue maybe the country of playmaking ability. I want you to hear these three things. They're important. They're not just words that we're throwing out with quarterbacks. When you look at the combination with Trinidad Chambers of playmaking ability, efficiency, and delivering in big moments, find me another quarterback in this in this group that has a better trio of those three specific things. That's why, and I struggled with it, because what arch can be this year with Cam Coleman coming over from Auburn, and with Wingo on the opposite side, what he can be is truly special, but I haven't seen it yet. I think you could make an argument between sellers and arch, but Trinidad, he had 445 pass attempts, three interceptions. He had that 1.5 quarter against Georgia and bounced right back. That Georgia tape, as I said in the college football playoff, was arguably the best tape of any quarterback we saw it last year. Outside of maybe that Mendoza, I would probably give a nod, a slight nod to Mendoza over Ohio State, in the big Tension Championship. So we're talking about, so where he was, now the unknown is, without Lane Kiffin, can they re-wrap and be as explosive, and can they press the right buttons with Trinidad in certain moments? It remains to be seen, but that would be my rationale behind it, right? With arch, I'm betting on the traits in the ceiling and a year of learning and going through the growing pains, and then going back and watching his tape of like, he's up in an elite category in terms of acceleration, taking off running, playmaking. He's in an elite category in terms of inside the pocket strength, sturdy stability, breaking tackles, those sorts of things. Now, I thought his eyes got better, I thought his footwork got better as a season progress, but it's not where it needs to be. And so you could argue that sellers, well, he's more dynamic. He has some of the same inconsistencies as the passer, but maybe became a little bit more consistent when he had any kind of protection. So I can get with the the arch versus sellers aspect of it. The hard one for me was Stockton, quite honestly. Ha ha, interesting, let's go. He was hard for me, man, because like no one there's tough good college quarterback, man. I love him. No one shares toughness. No, there's a lot of tough guys in this list. Nobody's gonna stockton. Okay. Yeah. Nobody has his experience, big games, big moments, showing up consistency, right? The way he competes, the athleticism. But he's like, it's the weirdest thing, man. Let me just explain this. He looked like he didn't belong when he like throwing just seven on sevens, one on ones at the at the Manning Passing Academy. Yeah. Like the ball is rattling out. It's like a 1970s car, like the muffler. That's how the ball comes out of his hand. Like the ball. Right? Yeah. But it's it gets there. Yeah. I just imagine like he's an old man for his age. Like he's icing down his arm after he's like barely getting it there. But he's like so smart. And you know, he's just figuring it out. I feel like it's something the water, it's something the water at Georgia. They all look 15 year like Brock Bowers looks like a 45 year old account. Absolutely. Yeah. But then you look at like he just showed 24 touchdowns, five interceptions, 462 rush yards, 10 rushing touchdowns, 34 total touchdowns, just five picks. And he just shows up and like I trust him. Yeah. So he's a weird one for me. You know, I'm a levied guy. I had I got him at five. I'm a Sam Levitt guy. You know, I am. And I know you're more of like my high school coach Bill Busch used to say every day of practice. I'm from he's from Swamp Scotter from Massachusetts. I don't know why, but he would take on this persona of like like almost like Midwest meets Southern accent of like I'm from Missouri. I'm from the show me state. You know, and we're like okay. Yeah, I've heard every killer man. Right. So you're you're more from the show me state with Sam Levitt. But I think going into the year, I would argue the face of college football. And it's it's yeah, it's arch and yeah, it's Dante and all that. But I think the guy that's most beloved and people nationally or most intrigued by his Trinidad Jambliss. I think when we get I think when I'm telling you man, I think there's a pocket of the country. That's true. I don't know of nationally. I think there's a if you're an SEC country that that's true. I think our child more cache. Yeah, I would I would think that. I think I'm I think by mid October Sam Levitt's going to be a guy that we're all like, oh, wow. Look at look what look what they're doing. You know, Matier, can he bounce back from the thumb injury talked about new mechanics, more efficient stroke, balanced delivery, all the things you're seeing at the quarterback camps with Mattier. Good. Your buckets are good, man. I think your top your buckets are really good. I can argue with some of the placement, right? I think the Chandler's Archsellers and Stockton bucket one, right? Okay. I think that Levitt, Matier and Reed bucket two. I might go Matier read Levitt. I might go depending on the day with these guys because they're so talented, but wildly inconsistent. And that's what drives you nuts about those three. I mean, those three could move way up. They could move way down that there's things to really love about them. Right bucket, though. Those are the next three that I would have. I might, you know, honestly, I'd probably go Matier read Levitt, but I get it. Same thing. And then again, I like the transfers. You got the transfers at the end. I do like that. There's one guy that I wanted to ask you about that maybe you didn't, you considered, but didn't get in. That's Camario Taylor from Mississippi State who didn't start last year. Got some playing time late up and down, kid, but I look at his frame. I look at his ability. I probably would have snuck him in there in the top 10 somewhere. I hear you going with them. Honestly, after reading before Byron Brown, I know South Florida fans are going to like that. Byron Brown played pretty well last year, but that's where I would start to think about putting Camario Taylor. Yeah, I don't disagree with that. I thought about it. Malik Washington from Maryland and Taylor, were the two guys at Manning Passing Academy that were like from a different planet, you know? Yeah. Yeah. And so I wouldn't know if if a list had Taylor in there, I would appreciate that. I'm interested to see how raw, how, you know, decision-making accuracy is he going to like, is this going to be the year where he kind of develops and shows progress and then kind of has a big year, the following year. How good is the supporting cast, but that's not what this is about. But yeah, if Taylor's in a top 10 list, I'm cool with it. Yeah. And then the other, I love what you did with the Alabama guys. I mean, what are we going to do here? Like I know that Keelan Russell is an elite talent and I know that Austin McAfee wins a job could be a turn into a top five quarterback here. We don't know enough. Well, I think I reversed it. Russell's the upside guy. McAfee is the more little bit more seasoned and like the kind of the guy you trust more, or you know, like the guy they might go with for that reason. Yeah. So, and he was with, he was at Washington with the bore. So he's been around them for a while. But that being said, I, both of those guys can end up being top five guys in the SEC this year. We just don't know enough. So why are you doing it? Why would you, you mentioned him, you pointed out and then you move on, you're not going to put him in there. Yeah. So, so when we look back on this in November, at the end of the year, or come come in the next year, at least we like recognize that like they're, they're, they're Alabama quarterbacks, they're talent. Right. Yeah. They're going to have a chance to be a dude. If he could figure it all out, he has a chance. But I, but I'm not going to put someone in that like week one might not even be the starter. Let's transition to big 10. Here we go. Top 10 guys. Same premise. Kind of a value. What they bring to their team. Without them, what they what they would be. Number one, Dante Moore, Oregon. Surprising nobody. Number two, Julian Sayon, Ohio State, perfect fit for what they are. If it was a different kind of quarterback there, even if it was more physically gifted, I don't think that operation would run the same way as it does with Julian saying that. That's why I put him at number two. Even though there are other more talented guys, like Jaden Mayeva from USC sitting at number three, certainly Niko Iamaliava from UCLA. This is, I'll be honest, transparency. Josh Pate came out with his list and had Niko Iamaliava at 10 and had, and had, yeah, and I got frustrated 'cause then I'm looking at who's he putting ahead of him and then we had Bryce Underwood from Michigan at number five or six on his list. And that's what got me going. I'm looking at other people who are putting out their list. I'm like, we spent all summer watching tape on these guys. It's our responsibility to the audience to share. What does the tape say? It's not like, it's what we see from the tape and it's how we rank them certainly. But if you're not diving into the tape because you're trying to start up a new show or you're a commissioner of the self appointed commissioner of college football or your interview, like that's fine. There's a ton of value in that. People love that. In fact, more people at this point love it 'cause you've been around longer than us. But what we do here is we stay in our lane of like, this is what the tape says. And Niko Iamaliava, even though the numbers weren't great, the wins losses were horrible. Niko Iamaliava was flat out brilliant at times last year. Niko Iamaliava with Chesney coming in, I'm excited to see that product, right? - Me too. - This guy's, this guy's, he's a real guy, talent wise. And so now we've got, we got two years of experience to build on one at Tennessee, one at UCLA, and now we got a new kind of this new excitement around and new coaching staff. So I've got Iamaliava at four, and again, my Ava, Iamaliava, Demand Williams, they're all more talented than Julian Sain, in terms of like unique traits, but say in the way he operates that thing. And I'm not just saying, well, yeah, of course, he's got Jeremiah Smith, and he's got weapons everywhere. He's got Bo Jackson in the back field, and he's gonna be protected well. And you know, they're gonna re-rack a good defense. But I'm saying for what they do, if you take Sain out and put in, honestly, you put in Demand Williams or my Ava or Iamaliava, I don't know that it goes as efficiently as it needs to go, right? - Yep. - And then I draw a line, and I think there's almost a next tier, and you could break up those first five into tiers if you want buckets of clusters. And I think you can. But Hoover, I think is a phenomenal fit. He's not Fernando Mendoza, but in terms of fit, and like, adjustment from one offense to the next, I think they found the right guy. I think Signetti once again found the right guy in that Indiana offense, coming from TCU, okay? Then you got Malik Washington from Maryland. We talked about Camario Taylor from Mississippi State. Malik is like every bit the part, big, tall, sturdy, strong, massive arm. I'm excited to see what he does, you know, year two at Maryland. Rocco Beck, some people might have him higher. I like Rocco Beck. - Interesting name, yeah. - I like Rocco Beck. I like his competitiveness, I like his toughness. I think he's a team guy, but I think there's some elements of his game that need to be refined. I'm excited to see At Penn State with like, it's just a smorgasbord of talent coming in from everywhere, a lot of Iowa State players, some UCLA guys on defense. There's only like five starters from Penn State from a year ago that are projected to be starters for Penn State. So that one's gonna be interesting. Bryce Underwood, we know the talent. - Yeah. - The tape's just not that good. So hopefully that nine turns into two, three, four, five somewhere by the end of the season, but I can't rank him any higher based off the tape. - No. - And then we're throwing kind of some darts with Calandria and Nebraska transferring in. Colton Joseph, Wisconsin. Yeah, so that's kind of where I landed. Again, I don't hate your buckets, man. I think Dante Morse is the clear. I mean, he's not only the potential number one overall path pick in the draft. I think he's clearly, if he's not the best quarterback in the country, it's the lower sellers, but to me, but I think Dante Morse is probably the best quarterback in the country. And then it's everyone else. But then, you know, Julian Saiyan's interesting because I'm with you, I don't like every time I'm like, what's the big deal with Julian Saiyan? You know, he's not that big. He doesn't run that well. He doesn't throw like, he's like a rocket. And then I go back and watch my report, which is, I mean, go back and read my report. And that's so important to do with these guys sometimes. And I'm like, dude, you love this guy. Like when you watched his tape, you love this guy because he's accurate, because he's on time. He just, you know, moves the chains, he makes plays. And the, it's like the, the ceiling, I guess it's rubriz, but damn, what a ceiling that is for a quarterback to have. So again, I love saying there. I think that's my, my, my, I would go next. I think there is a job off with I am, I'm, I'm going to get that. By the way, you did a great job in negotiating those names back to back. Uh, I think there's a little bit of a drop off there. And then after I am, I'm, uh, there's more of a drop off. And you could start sorting those guys a little bit differently. Like, I might put Rocco a little bit, a little bit higher because I like the experience that he's a proven guy, but I get the argument from a league Washington because he's so freaking talented that seven interceptions over the last six games. Yeah, but the, in like the, the accuracy, accuracy is a little bit up and down, but he's a dude that can do things that other guys can't do. And he's going to be someone to watch over the next year or two in terms of the NFL draft. So I get that. I get, you know, all of these things jump out to me. Clandria has an interesting cat, uh, because he's coming over from, he's the Matt West player of the year last year at UNLV. He runs really well. He's mobile. Yeah. I went and watched his tape. He, um, he was kind of awesome to watch at UNLV. Yes. Here's my thing with Clandria. Yeah. Every time I watched him make a play in the back of my head, I kept asking myself, will that work in the big 10? Uh-huh. Do you know what I mean? And a lot of it because he's a good runner and all of his good plays are off schedule. Is he fast enough, sudden enough, instinctive enough to, to make that work against big 10 defenders? That's, that's the, that's the question I have, which I started to think because Nebraska fans were all too happy or seem to be, I shouldn't speak for all of them, but there seems to be a large contingency of Nebraska fans are all too happy to have the Mountain West player of the year come in and watch Dylan Raiola walk out the door and go to Oregon. And I will say this to you, Dylan Raiola might be the best second best player on the Oregon roster. I think he's one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the big 10. I, I like, I, I get it. Last year, if you watched that Minnesota tape, it's tough. They took nine sacks in that game and yeah, a lot of it was past protection, but a lot of was Raiola holding, holding onto the ball too long. And I get that he's kind of easy to poke fun at because, because he's, you know, the Patrick Mahomes, is he copying Patrick Mahomes, the haircut, the movement, some of the, the arm angles that he has Dylan Raiola, I mean, I, I mean, we're looking at this list. He's probably coming into the conversation around six or seven in my mind. I'm just being honest about it. You got a big kid. I heard, I was just like preparing for this. I was just going around seeing like what people were saying. And I heard about statue west, he's not, he, listen, his rushing yards are low because I think Nebraska, the third most sacks in the, in the big 10, again, he's got to get rid of the ball more, but he's not as much of a statue as I think people think. I think even though he's a backup, he's, he's a player, I would consider a top 10 quarterback in the big 10 right now. And guess what? Oregon does it again. I mean, they got Dante Moore when they had Gabriel there. Now they go out and get Raiola where they have Dante Moore there. Like it's just, to me, they're doing such an excellent job of getting their quarterbacks in the building and developing guys and making sure they're ready to step in. And yeah, I know Will Steins gone, but it was Dan landing staff that got these quarterbacks where they were. So it's going to be interesting to see how much of the Will Steins thing was a factor. But Dylan Raiola is, you know, these Nebraska fans, I get at the calendars way more mobile and I understand that. But I'm interested to see how those two storylines play out over the, really over the next two years. It's interesting too to look at both the SEC and the, and the big 10, especially programs that. Well, let me ask you. Well, you know, go ahead. Go, go for it. I just want to make one quick point that. Yep. Especially, especially at programs that aren't Texas and Oregon and Ohio state and have that level of talent, right? Mm-hmm. Lot, lot of mobility. You think back just even, you know, five years ago, especially ten years ago. But these two conferences specifically, the lack of mobility at quarterback is pretty wild. And you go back to that SEC rankings, obviously, you do have arch at one of the arguably top three most talented programs in the country. But Chamblist at all, missing what he brings, Lenore Sellers, South Carolina, Stockton's Running Ability, Levitt's Running Ability, Matier's Running Ability, Marcel Reed, Byron Brown comes in with 1121 non-sacked rush yards and 14 touchdowns a year ago at Auburn. Austin Simmons, Ole Miss, Kenny Minshee can run a little bit. And yeah, and then what we'll see what happens at Alabama, but even especially at the big 10 with my Ava, Eam Ali Ava, Dimon Williams, right? Yeah. Malik Washington at Maryland, and then Bryce Underwood at Michigan, Kalandria, who we talked about, Nebraska, Colton Joseph, who I threw in there as the honorable mention was cut. You got to remember he rushed for over a thousand yards and 13 touchdowns. It was at an old dominion. Old dominion. Yeah. But a little treat. He's very intriguing. So I'm glad you mentioned him. Yeah. I'm asking to watch a few staunchy blue blood conferences is there's a lot of mobility to try to offset that also the best defenses in the country, right? Right. So where were you going to I go ahead? Were you going to I might be better for this conversation or are you going to blend the two to see where your top five would be overall? Yeah. Let's go there. I want to do a top six. Of course you do, because that's the number. Everyone goes like, no one does top fives, they just do top sixes. All right. Well, it allows us to know you don't even know what the premise is yet. You just if I did top five, it would be unbalanced. I want to do a draft. Let it be. I want us. Let's put that let's put our what's I want to put you under the microscope a little bit. Okay. If we if I gave you the first pick of all the SEC and all the big 10 quarterbacks, right? And I really liked him on Williams to I just don't I think that there's a little bit of gap there in my mind. And my I was such a natural thrower of the ball and he's a little more mobile than maybe people realize. So I'm just going through SEC SEC big 10 SEC see 10 big 10. So we got one two four four big 10. Some Notre Dame. And that leaves us with five SEC what's interesting is pretty balanced. Well, it is because of nine and 10 right but the top the top eight was five SEC C J car and two big 10. I think that's where the differential is. How about the list overall though, man, there's a lot of talent, a lot of talent. How blessed are we and this is a good group. It's a really good group. Compare that to what it would have been a year ago and we were excited about it a year ago and then Nuss Meyer injuries and and and and sellers regressed with the supporting cast and offensive coaches and you know, you can go through the whole litany of things. But there were a Clemson fell apart club Nick club Nick looks looks okay with the jets so far. I've been encouraged by what we've seen. So one other note that I want to share with people we're going to start our QB stock watch draft wise and we keep an eye on this list too throughout the season. We can maybe revisit this once a month. But we're going to one thing we're going to we spent a lot of time not not just fly fishing and lazy river riding and all that stuff over the last three plus weeks. We spent a lot of time watching tape and we spent a lot of time production meetings handling some business stuff and all that trying to figure out what what what let's figure out what the best of. We spent time with the analytics folks at Spotify want to appreciate like we want to know what you as our viewers enjoy the most. And so we dove in hard this this summer on okay what what is received the best and and I think because of the nature of this quarterback class it's a no brainer. We're going to do a weekly stock watch and you can follow along too online. The newsletter the McShay report which you can kind of you can access obviously you can Google it and subscribe and we appreciate it. But also the our our site our database that we're we continue to develop it's the ringer.com slash McShay as I said the top 50 is going to be unleashed. But throughout the season we're going to keep updating on a weekly basis the QB stock watch. And discussing okay here the top 10 quarterbacks as far as the NFL draft are concerned stock up stock down everything's fine. We're going to keep an eye on that throughout the season. I think that'll be a fun tool to kind of keep tabs on on what's happening. And and honestly like some guys are going to be hurt like if Levitt goes out and doesn't play the way I thought it was going to be maybe I'll hang on longer and he'll give you more ammunition to come clap back at me. >> Can't wait. >> But that'll be that'll be a fun thing that we're going to do throughout the season. Okay. One of the biggest story lines of this last draft was Ty Simpson. And we're going to do to spend a lot more time this summer and throughout the entire season of looking back at the rookies. I think it's something that drove me crazy at ESPN. It's like the second they're drafted or we pass it on to all the NFL people and I no longer ever get to talk about it prospect. And quite frankly the last couple of years we've we've delved into it a little bit. We haven't done enough of it. We're going to and and the analytics show that folks really like to hear what our thoughts are as we're tracking the rookies throughout the year. Whether it's for fantasy football gambling purposes or you're just a die hard football fan which we which we love the most, to be honest. So I want to get to some of the rookie stuff we've seen and mind you it's just like 10 days into into playing some preseason games. But we've also had a lot of like mixed scrimmages, practice reports, all that. The biggest story one of the biggest story lines this past draft was Ty Simpson. Most people thought it was a second round or overrated. There are other analysts in our space that really thought that it was that it was a crime that Ty Simpson was considered a first rounder by some of some of the other people including myself. But we had a lot of jokes about you know or Lofsky kind of going a little too far on it. Maybe he wasn't wrong. Well only time will tell and we certainly won't have that answer this year. So at least we hope not because we hope for a healthy season for Matthew Stafford. But my gosh, was I encouraged by what I saw in that first preseason. game. And I know you've gone back and watched a tape too. What we'll start with you guys. What did you see from Ty Simpson with the ramps? When you got picked 13th overall, I was not surprised how to win the mock draft. I was biting my nails as we got to the 10th, 11th, 12th, and then finally the 13th pick like because I purposely didn't talk to less. And you were in the car as well. I know after. Yeah, I know. You're kind of you're an asshole, man, like, you have a job to do. Like fist pump, you have a job to do. But man, I really wish you didn't, you know, I was, you made me run over. Then I should have been. He was great about it. An absolute professional, one of the best human beings. And also happens to be one of the best at what he does as a general manager of the ramps. But my point is, with Ty Simpson, it was very controversial. And then you saw some low lights coming out of training camp and it's like, oh, yeah, here we go. Don't look good. But then you see his first performance. I think it was 21 of 25. I don't get bogged down so much on that. But we both went back and watched the tape. And I'm curious to see or to hear from you what you saw. I love the word encouraged. That's the perfect word for what we're seeing. I'm encouraged too. And as Rams fans, you're allowed to be excited about that. You know, because you're going to hear a lot about, oh, we'll see if you can do it two years again, two years from now or three years from now in November at Seattle. And I understand those things. That is a hundred percent true. I get it. Encouraging though, the thing that encouraged me the most to be honest with you was how quick he looked. He looked healthy with his drops getting from under center to depth. I mean, he was moving, man. And obviously they were doing a lot of those play action rollouts that make that McVeigh system so different, Sean McVeigh system so difficult to defend, you know, kind of simplifying reads early on. They did a great job of getting in a rhythm with learning though, you know, it felt like they ran five of those early on just to get him going. And then we saw what we've seen from Tyson and when he's healthy, he's accurate when he's on time. He can deliver the ball. He's going to make good decisions. I thought, you know, there was, there's things you can nitpick, right? Arm strength. I still have some concerns about it. I think he was, you know, flinging it around there. There's, I think one, maybe two throws that he missed. You know, there's a couple of things, but encouraging that was an encouraging performance from a rookie quarterback getting his feet wet in this first NFL action. And I know it's a preseason game. And again, I know there's naysayers, but I liked what I saw overall. You know what I liked the most? What? There was a, there was a calm to him. Mm hmm. Wasn't holding the ball too long, but there were certain points in time. I would say maybe six, six completions he had where first read wasn't there. Maybe second read wasn't there. And then as a quarterback, it's like the, the shitter get off the pot moment, right? Yeah. Where it's like the 1,000, 1,000, 2, which you don't do in your head, but you just, you're trained. When you get, like, when you start the 1,000 after 1,000, 2, and it's like this mental clock that people always talk about, but literally, like, you feel it. You don't, you don't go 1,000, 1,000, 2 in your head. You just, right. You get to a point where you've wrapped it so many times. You know when it's 2 1/2. And he was at, he was like dancing on the edge of a cliff with that 2 1/2, right? Yeah. And hung in there. And watch, I want you to go back and watch it through this lens. Anyone who's watching or listening to this show, watch at that 2 2 1/2 mark in his head. How calm his feet were and how steady his base was. I know it's a weird thing to get in there. I get excited about, but when you're really diving in, there was this calmness to, okay, I'm in 1,000, 1,000, 2, 1/2. And his, and a lot of times when you study, especially the college quarterbacks and rookies, right? You get to 1,000, 1,000, 2, 1. And then you start to see the feet get anxious or you start to see, all right, my, my, my uppers turning back to the right, but my lower is not coming with me because a panic starts to set in, right? Yeah, has come down. Yep. All of it. I didn't see that. And, and yes, he's a coach's son. His dad was middle, would middle Tennessee state or whatever it was for, for like 20 years, head coach, and he's in around all this whole, but, but in Alabama is the protection started to fail. And, and I talked about that Oklahoma game, where it's like, they, Venables, like, drew up kind of a blueprint, a diagram of how, how to beat their protections. And you saw bits and pieces of it, but they exploited it. And then Ryan Williams, now Ryan Coleman Williams kind of starts disappearing. And it's all on Ty Simpson. Don't matter how much ball you've been around. Eventually we're all human beings, you know? And, and we saw moments in Tom Brady's career, Peyton Manning's career, like when they don't trust it, whether it's the receivers, the protection, when they don't trust it doesn't matter who you are. You start to get this anxiousness about you and, and your mechanics and, and everything starts to fall apart. I didn't see it in your bank. Yes. And, and Ty was late in the last season, as we kind of came to find out, he dropped a 190 pounds, right? Um, it's one game. And it's a preseason game. And I'm not putting, yeah, encouraged is a great word. But when I'm looking for specific things that look better as a, as a rookie than they did his last year in college, his only full years of starter, that's encouraging to me because it tells me this. What Sean McVey is preaching what he's, what he's, what he's putting down, Ty Simpson's picking up. You know what I mean? Yeah. And, and, and this is a very short period of time these two have had to work with one another. I'm not saying this is my homes with Andy Reed, where it's like, oh, like was it 13th overall or 10th overall? No, I think it was 10th overall that the chiefs wound up trading up to go get him. He lands with the chiefs and you're like, oh, he's going to be year behind Alex Smith. He's going to Andy Reed. You know, like, it's going to be better than maybe, maybe we anticipated. Um, I'm not saying it's going to be all of that. I'm just saying there's a comfort level when a, when a quarterback goes to a certain system and then you see early early returns on it. I thought the ball was jumping off his hand. Is he going to drive it vertically with like, Stafford? No. Right. Never. Stafford's, Stafford's one, he's, he's a, he's a one on our grading scale. He's an elite in terms, but I think that short to intermediate stuff, the play action, the calmness about him, understanding where his eyes need to go. Man, that's encouraging. And honestly, I thought Mendoza looked good in his preseason game. I thought there were a lot of encouraging moments to come. Ty looks more comfortable. Drew Aller had an awesome game for the Steelers. You know, my stance on Drew. I may wind up looking like an absolute jackass. If Mike McCarthy keeps it, I can only hope so. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, you'll have a lot of fun for the next one. What if he becomes a great starting quarterback in the league for a decade in Pittsburgh? I'm going to have to eat that for 10 years. Yeah. It's going to be great. But, but, but Drew Allers looked encouraging with the Steelers. But I, but I, and I watched that tape. And there's a lot of good things to come in now, but he's throwing a couple receivers. We were running away from him with a little bit more accuracy in his base and his mechanics look good. So what McCarthy and that staff have done with Aller and Pittsburgh in a short period of time is really encouraging. But none of it's looked as, like, translatable as like, oh, this fits as what we saw in one tiny sample size of one game in the preseason. But it's still that, that looked better than any other quarterback I've seen as a rookie so far this year. Dan's going to argue with you. I mean, Dan Hayden's king pride of Georgia tech. I mean, he's the next Doug Flutey. So we're just going to use it. No, I called him Tim Tibo 2.0 in the mid season last year. Oh, I forgot about that. You could have let that go, but you want to bring it back. That's great. Oh, of course I do. You put, you, you put Haynes King with Florida talent, Circa Urban Meyer. You put Haynes King with Ohio State or or or Texas or like Haynes, what Haynes King was doing in college football last year was with the most overlooked thing that we've seen in the last five years in college ball. I loved him at Georgia tech. Well, you're not saying that you think that that was going to translate the NFL though. Oh, no, no, no, I was just saying, but, but I want to remind people of how, how crazy obviously it was Tim Tibo and the lore, the legend, the all of it behind, behind Tibo that everything that came with Tibo. But Tim Tibo want to play off game in Denver. Tim Tibo showed some flashes early on to the point where I was like, huh, I'll never forget walking walking in the green room in Bristol and, and Dilford and I were like commiserating for months and months about like, man, like, it sucks to have to bang on the Tim Tibo drum. Like he's not an NFL quarterback. And like, I had, I had, I had Trent in my corner, and I walked in on a Sunday like late in the season. I'm there to do like a, a bowl preview show or something. He's like, I'm out, I'm out of mist on urban. I'm like, not a, a two, Brutei, a two. Demarious Thomas takes like a little, you know, a little floater over the middle. It goes 80 yards or whatever it was. So let's be like, I'm proud about it. Some other rookies have stood out too. I don't want to just gloss over the Thai Simpson thing. Like how encouraging is that for a Rams fan? And obviously everything's about this year. And then you go put them on the shelf. But what if the 37 year old, what I think he's 37? It's got to be around that. Yeah. Matthew Stafford. What if, What if they're four or five games because there's an injury or what if his body starts to, you know, like, and one, if you don't see, I said, like, there's still next year or two years from now, like to see that as a Rams fan, it's not just like, okay, we're going to go win another Super Bowl and then we're going to tear this whole thing apart. Now I'm looking at this thing and like, I'm like, vase here for a little bit, unless this here for a bit, and they just got made, they may have just like kind of plucked their quarterback while also bringing in Miles Garrett. And now maybe Aaron Donald and a couple awesome cornerbacks from Kansas City. One's also another one's a good play. And so we're winning now, but we also, we get this plan for the long term and it's not F them picks. We're doing it without F them picks. What's a little bit of F them picks, but yeah, but not like it was. No, they didn't get it in early first. Yeah, Merr. Yeah, I would say early first. I would call it that some other guys that stood out, anyone else that has jumped out or you want me to go through a few, you know, my son Tyler won't shut up about Cyrus Allen, the receiver from Cincinnati at Kansas City. He's going to he's a fantasy guy and he's he's talking about taking him in the first round. I'm kidding. He's not going to take him that early, but like he just will not shut up clip after clip after clip after Cyrus Allen, which is awesome to see talented kid. I mean, they need help a receiver. So hopefully that continues to develop the way it's gone so far. Let me give you a few wide receivers as we're on it. And I, I loved his his suddenness. I just I thought he was one of the most, I thought he was one of the most underrated receivers in last year's class. So it early returns as I got that right. All right. I feel good about that one. Here's a few where I don't. You ready? Yeah. Kobe Lane, his inability to separate drove me fricking crazy at NUS a big tall physical massive hands. Can run, right? Couldn't separate trope like McIlon. And I thought he could have been a lowly. He wasn't like Drake London in 50, 50 stations, which is the bar. That's the bar. Like if you're looking at at a guy who's built like that, it's Drake London. And as he played like Drake London, one of the balls in the air and and he didn't. Right. But he has in training camp for the Ravens. And that's been pretty cool to see. Yeah. Because now you're looking at Lamar. And it's like we just paid big money to to our to our what's my flowers, right? And we love flowers coming out of BC. And then he just like keeps getting better. It feels like, right? So we got our number one. We got our explosive guy, we shot Bateman. Can you stay healthy? Kind of consistent. And I think even even the ceiling when he is healthy and everything's good, I feel like he's a good number three in the league, you know? Yeah. But fine. Fine is it too. Okay. And Mark Andrews is getting up there in age and we and I say likely goes cause with a hard bar to the Giants. So so they need another guy. And I didn't think he was going to be Jacobi Lane to be honest with you. The third round pick. Maybe Eric DeCosta was on to something more than that. Now again, you go watch the highlights and you go watch some of the clips from camp. It's not great separation so far, but they're doing a good job of scheming, scheming him open using those big hands to make like tough one handed catches acrobatic. So there's been I'm not saying maybe he's there number three. Maybe it's a number four to start the season, but it's been really encouraging as a third round receiver coming out of USC that I didn't love with all the talent and wide receiver in this class. I had him pretty maybe like the 13th or 14th best receiver to see what he he's been one of the big stories of training camp in the NFL in terms of rookie wide receivers. Another receiver who I knew was a really great return man. And also like here, I think he blew up the I don't think he blew up the combine some of his numbers and the combinations of like 40s and vets and but but Kaden Wetchan. I mean, he like talk about kind of like freakish ability and explosiveness. Like it's I don't know. He's a return specialist and a receiver who's shown a lot of flashes of fourth round pick for the Steelers, right? He's had a good camp. Now I did love Casey conception. I've really liked what I've seen from him for the Browns. Really liked that Denzel Boston was your guy. And I tried to piggyback on that too. He's had a really good camp. So I think like a B I did say I think conception is going to have a better rookie year. I think you could argue he's been a little bit better than Boston. But the fact that they're getting too rookie wide receivers that look the part right away is really encouraging. Is to Sean Watson going to be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns? Are the Browns starting to figure it out? Like even after trading miles get are they starting to figure it out? Like that's I mean, it's interesting. That team is going to be fun to watch and interesting to watch this year. They might have had the best draft of any team in the national football. It's crazy, which is crazy. It's crazy. But then the third receiver that I wanted to show a little love to is Camden Brown from the Cowboys. We didn't do him. I don't remember doing him. We didn't even do him. So I can't say I was right or wrong, but the fact that he wasn't on a list of like 250 players that we want up evaluating. And it was a late jump. We probably in a in a normal year where we're like 350 plus what have gotten to him. We didn't do him. Georgia Southern receiver, three catches, 62 yards, two touchdowns in the Cowboys last preseason game. I talked to a couple people and they're like he's like his camp has been awesome. He may be our surprise. I remember like Terpen came in from the USFL or like he may be a guy that just shocks everyone and is like the number four, number five receiver and contributes on that team. But he's legitimately in that like 53 man conversation right now. And that's awesome to see. Some some guy they're like seeing, you know, I wasn't at the senior bowl didn't talk about the combine under after free agent. So I thought that was cool. Some other names of guys that have been impressed with from what I've seen. David Bailey, we knew he was but like he's looks every bit the part with the jets. I've been really excited like one of the best players in their in their camp regardless of what year. Okay. He's so he's he's coming right Ruben Bane. Tampa Bane is what they're calling it. Not just like what he's doing on the field, but every day in practice, everything that we reported that we're getting that's out of Florida. He has set a tone for that defense. Now Vita Veya is holding out and and what's going on Baker Mayfield. It feels like this this organization is kind of like splintering a little bit. But Ruben Bane is is the future of and he's he's be quickly become one of the leaders of that defense. And I think it was a three three sacks in that joint practice they had against the jets is what I was told. So he's a guy that's that stepped in has been every bit the part. Caleb Downs for the Cowboys. Just talking to people around the league like everything we said coming in. It's not just he's going to be a really good rookie. He's going to make some plays. It's he's probably going to step in as a rookie with all these other veterans and become the leader of that defense at least the leader of the secondary exactly what we expected. And then I've heard a lot of good reports even of Texans have didn't look great in their their their preseason game recently. I've heard Kate McDonald's been awesome and that's not surprising. No, I watched our Val Reese his naps. He looked pretty good too. Not surprising. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, pretty sunny styles is the one that I saw a couple clips. I'd like to go back and actually watch the tape that he like his eyes weren't where they need to be and things like that. But it's hard to it's hard to tell. I can't. I thought he looked pretty good. I get it. People are going to I understand. I like what I'll say this what sucks. Is I thought Arizona had a pretty good draft and now chase missant is the cut the guard out of Texas A&M looks like he's he's going to miss the entire year with the knee injury. And it came out that Jeremiah love has reportedly a high ankle sprain is going to miss the season. Yeah, rest of the preseason. I don't want to choice that clearly. Preseason. Yeah. Yeah. No, I hope Jeremiah just like watching I don't care free running from Jeremiah love. It's a different league, different speed, different power. I hope he learns pretty early on how to protect himself as much as you can while still being a physical presence. And, you know, it's really my only concern just physically. I mean, he was the best player in the draft. There's no question. And he had like 11 carries for 58 yards. He looked awesome. It's just yeah, he's going to have to stay healthy. Jeremy Bernard, both of our guys, I think he's more my guy at the end, but okay, at the very end. Yeah, you reminded me that I appropriately put him in the second round here. He's having a good training camp for the the Steelers as well. And the thing that I've heard with Jeremy is exactly what we said when he was drafted of all the rookie wide receivers. This guy's got the best and maybe the only shot to prove his reliability to an old crusty quarterback in Aaron Rogers and actually get on the field and become a reliable weapon. And that's what I'm hearing that he's done so far. So I'm excited to see what Jeremy Bernard does this year. Really quickly. Your guy, more than my guy, but both for our guys too. It's struggling for the 49ers. Is it also a strong start too, man? Do you see He was good. Yeah. And now and and Ricky Purcell. - Like, another, that's, can't buy a break, man. It absolutely sucks. He's too, like, to come out and work it. - Oh, it was so good. - So good. But with injury comes opportunity, and yeah, Stribbling was, - Stribbling, I remember the last month of the draft being, like, there's two guys in the second round, Stribbling and Bernard, or like, they're not, they're not the maybe elite talent, number one guys, but as number two targets, whether it's rookie year, second year, they're just gonna become really reliable, good players with ability to generate after the catch, and so far, so good for both of those guys. - All right, this was fun. Good start. - Yeah. - Good to be back in the seat on the horse, you know? Did you get out of any horses out in a month? I mean, I mean, we were gonna get to Montana and show some, we wanna do any of that? - I just really wanna say thank you. I just really wanna say thank you to Tim Solso and Matt Solso. - Oh my gosh. Matt Solso, my next start day, my great friend, for the hospitality, having my family out there for 10 days, me out in the 14 days. - It's also a family, I've been around a lot of people who have had success, you know, I don't wanna. - I mean, it's kind of like Kirk's dignity. You can Google it if you want with Tim Solso and see what he's accomplished in his life. One of the more impressive resumes you could ever have, you know? - I wouldn't know it. - If you sat down next to him at a restaurant or at a table, you wouldn't know. - But first of all, you did not warn me of what I was entering into. Like it made, was Dutton Ranch, you know what I mean? - Yeah. - Yeah, Dutton Ranch looked like cute, okay? - It's nice. - It's nice. I'll never forget that ride when they pointed out this is the beginning of the property line. We're going 80 miles an hour in a highway and it took about two and a half minutes before we took the left onto the property. I'm like, so this is all, but he's earned it. And pictures of him with presidents from both sides Republican Democrats, you know, like he's so brilliant and so impactful in what he did to him that was called upon a leadership to nationally to help. And to see him as gracious and humble and to sit down and to be able to just like have conversations with him and to see the true joy that he had in sharing it with the bench family, the McShay family. - Oh yeah. - Roth Townsend or McTowns former teammate. And it didn't matter of like what you came from, like he genuinely interested in everyone all the way down to six year old Stella who lost to Chewbacca for a minute and he helped find Chewbacca. But it was an awesome experience, you know, it was an awesome experience. And so, and he's a Matt, it is Matt's wife, Kim. Oh, they've been an unbelievable experience of my family. My kids, myself. - They're essentially extended family for you guys. - Yes. - And I very quickly, you know, I'd met them before and went on your podcast, screen the screener. Check that out by the way, people. I don't do enough. Benches got a kind of a Boston centric sports podcast. With Matt and with Tyler's son, which is awesome. And so I've met Matt a little bit, but to be able to spend time with him, I can see why they, you consider them kind of an extended family. It was awesome. - By four matters rolled through it by the end of it. I mean, we had Alex Stevens, we had Sam Kaufman, Roth Townsend, Bert Horsley and Todd McShay all rolled through. That was kind of cool to see five former teammates, you know? - Yeah, and some of the pictures, and they were smoked, it came through. So it was hard, but like, as it cleared up in the last day, to see like the mountains surrounding you. Literally like one exit down from the Yellowstone National Park. It's kind of the base, the foot, like at the foot of all of it. It's kind of what, you know, if you watched Yellowstone, Tyler Sheridan's, they saw a pool. - A pool rest show, like at the, in the foothills of this mountain range, it was insane. - Yeah.
