Season 8 Episode 3 - Helen Vane

In this episode of the HUBBUB podcast, host Faye Miller and co-host Jackie Irving interview Helen Vane, founder of Go Gecko Recruitment. Helen shares her 30-year career journey, starting with negative experiences in the recruitment industry, including poor management and the difficulty of balancing work as a mother. This led her to start her own agency 10 years ago, aiming to "do recruitment my way." Go Gecko serves small to medium-sized businesses in Sussex, specializing in operational and commercial roles, from admin to director level, while avoiding high-turnover areas like hospitality. A standout feature of the agency is its retention service, which helps companies assess whether they truly need new hires or can optimize their existing teams, reducing knee-jerk recruitment. Helen highlights the importance of understanding each client's unique culture and needs, often engaging early to refine job descriptions and ensure a good fit. The team is intentionally small, with a talent manager focusing on candidates while Helen handles client relationships and retention. She prides herself on being a hands-on director and business owner, offering a personalized, relentless approach to matching talent with companies. The conversation underscores how Go Gecko differentiates itself through bespoke services and deep client engagement, making recruitment more effective and cost-efficient for growing businesses.

Hello and welcome to season 8, episode 3 of the Directors Hub podcast HUBB. I'm Faye Miller from Gingerbread World and with me is my co-host Jackie Irving from Sussex Business Times. Today we are talking to Helen Vane of Go Gecko Recruitment. Hi Helen, nice to have you on the show. Hello, lovely to be here. My first podcast, don't worry, we'll be gentle with you. Thank you. Well, so you run Go Gecko Recruitment. Tell us a bit about that and what you do. So we recruit for small to medium size companies across Sussex geographically and we do recruitment and retention solutions for business owners who are looking to grow their companies. And how did that come into being? So I've been in recruitment for 30 years. I say 30 years, I tried to say 25 plus because it makes me stand up at younger. But 30 years of recruitment experience and I had a couple of really bad experiences and I came away thinking either I leave recruitment or I set up on my own. So 10 years ago I set up Go Gecko on my own to do recruitment my way. Can you tell us a bit more about those bad experiences as to what was it about them that made you think I've had enough of this? I think for me it was just being, I was a mum of two young, young-ish boys at that time and recruitment is relentless and it's highly competitive and you have much younger people coming on board who have ambition to earn a lot more money and I only had a certain amount of time in my day. So it was that and also quite bad bosses. Yeah. I won't say who because obviously they can't get sued. But people who maybe mismanaged didn't really see the scenario and it was quite new for recruitment back then to have mothers and women who were aging in their workforce because they were very used to having young people in their workforce who no one really stayed around that long. So yeah, hence decided to come away and do it my way. So is recruitment something that you've done for your entire professional life? Was that what did you do university and then go into recruitment or did you go straight in from college or how did it begin for you? So I went to university and I did Sathy Station Studies and Language but obviously that wasn't going to get me a job. I did a lot of travelling but didn't get me a job. And then I fell in and out of sales clubs. So I realised I'm quite good at talking to people. So that's my skill and my strength and always has been. So I fell in and out of different sales jobs and actually fell into recruitment, which a lot of people say about recruitment because it was another sales job and found that I really love selling people because everyone's different. So that was it for you. As you said, I was going to spread to say what did you love about it? But you said you love selling people. So it was meeting different characters and finding different people for roles and that really matched the roles. That sort of thing that really drove you sort of meeting these different interesting characters. I think really it's people's stories. And also supporting people when I see the gold. So I see people's strengths and opportunities. And I've always been like that. And I think some people struggle to see their own. So it's piecing that together for people and then being able to create a opportunity for them that I really love. So you said you sort of recruit for businesses across Sussex, the South East kind of area. Is there any particular areas that you specialise in at all? Or can they be businesses from all walks of life basically? They, I get asked this question a lot, but I would say that they can be from any walk of life. We tend to deal within the operational commercial element of the business. So things like from an admin through to a commercial director, sales account management, all of that comes up within an office environment. But we do touch on warehouse facilities procurement. And the things we don't really do are catering and hospitality. Because it's very high turnover. And we're a small team. So it's just being able to deal with that. Yeah. So when you started out, was it just you initially, when you started your business or did you have others drawing you straight away? No, just me, on my own. And then slowly but surely, there's still only two of us. We did grow a little bit after Covid, so they were four of us after Covid. One was a part-time market here. She's still with me, but on a freelance basis because she has a full-time job. So she works freelance for me. And I've got Emma, who's our talent manager, who's brilliant. She's exceptional with candidates. So, yeah, we are compacting to be sure. What does a talent manager do then? Is that, sorry, I'm forgive my ignorance. I'm not in recruitment. But yeah, what's their role in the business then? Emma looks after our candidates. So we split the business. So Emma very much looks after our candidates. I do do some work with candidates still, because I enjoy that element of the role and I like to keep my hand in. And I do mentor and coach candidates outside as well. But I then look after the businesses and make sure that that is going well. And also running our retention service, which is about going in and making sure that the teams that we put our people into are effective and running well. And actually, they actually need someone else, because quite often people think they need someone. And they don't. Yeah. Is that something that's the retention service? Is that something that a lot of recruitment agencies do? Or is that something that's quite unusual going in and sort of like advising the teams and saying, yes, you do need someone. You don't need someone and that kind of thing. Quite unusual. Yeah. It's not really like most people will wait for a company to come to them with a requirement or having built that relationship over time. Know the requirements that are coming up. But I've developed it because I felt there was a need with small to medium sized companies when they don't necessarily utilize the talent that they've got. OK. And sometimes it's a knee-jerk reaction to their own companies growing or their all teams being difficult. They think, oh, let's put a blaster over it. Let's get a new person in. Well, actually, they don't need to do that. And it's not that cost effective. So that must be quite a valuable service that you're able to offer to the companies, as well as encouraging them to stay with you for their recruitment needs, as well, I would have thought, because they know that they're going to get value from your service out of that. That's exactly how it works. Yeah. And actually, I absolutely love working internally with companies because it makes recruitment even better for them. The recruitment service that we can offer, then, it's like I have an internal, like I'm working for them directly, so I have an internal knowledge of what they do. So you must have got to know some of these companies quite well over the years and what they do and what their processes are, I suppose. Yeah, I have. I love it. So how does it work, then? If you've got a company that comes to you because they need somebody in admin in the office and that, and then talk us through the process of what you do. So quite often, I like to get in early. So from the point of view of, you know, like we went to the business show yesterday, Jackie will, Jackie and I met the business show yesterday. And I will have conversations, then, with business owners. And they might say, oh, I'm thinking of, I think I might need someone in whenever it is a couple of months' time. And I'll say some great, let's have a chat, generally, a very informal conversation to start off with to really understand them, their business, what their likes and dislikes are, what experience they've had of agencies before, bad, good, indifferent. And then I'm in a good position, then, to be able to support. And we run different services, depends. So we're very bespoke with the client and what their cash flow is and what they're actually looking for. Yeah. The earlier, the better, because then also I can finesse the jobs back for them. So I can then look at what they've got already, what is it they really need, is it what they think they need, or is it something entirely different, and then we're able to finesse that out for them. So you offer a really personal service? Is that what separates you from other recruitment companies? I would say so, but other recruitment companies will say they offer personal service as well. So I think it's, it for me, it's about being a director and owner of my own business as well, because a lot of recruitment directors and owners won't be that hands on. They will have a team of people who are hands on, but I love being hands on. And that's what a director or owner of their own business gets from me, is they get that understanding, because I've got staff, had staff, been through the pay. And I get it and I also, I will work relentlessly until it's right. So it's not about just popping someone in and hoping that they stick. It's very much about keeping an eye as well. So you really drill down into sort of what the company needs and then the candidates that would align with that. So it's not a one size fits all approach, but it means then. No, it never is. And it actually, you know, a lot of businesses have very similar issues and problems and challenges, but one person is not going to fit with the same business because they're altogether different as people. Yeah, so I guess cultural fit and businesses is really important, isn't it, as well as much as recruiting the person with the skills, but how they fit in with the rest of the team is that's going to be a massive factor as well, because I can be brilliant. ansodd egg id Attack'' Chyd msaol at cr amlon na rosir walnut 그lad beth dyddiwymat blând path yn wahanolno fewn cryd bra Uniaan kier y salute mut hect牛 bobl y gael or pleasantiad o'r iawn yws nawr sy'n amgynatš, bobl pendeimb o '掰掰 elfyd roi ar gyffraedn. FAQs

Go Gecko Recruitment recruits for small to medium size companies across Sussex, offering recruitment and retention solutions for business owners looking to grow their companies.

Helen started Go Gecko Recruitment after 30 years in recruitment, motivated by bad experiences with mismanagement and a desire to do recruitment her own way, especially as a working mother.

They specialize in operational commercial roles, from admin to commercial director, including sales and account management, and also handle warehouse and facilities roles, but not catering or hospitality due to high turnover.

They offer a highly personal service with Helen being a hands-on director and owner, and they provide a retention service that advises companies on whether they actually need to hire, optimizing existing talent.

The process starts with early, informal conversations to understand the business, followed by bespoke services tailored to the client's needs and cash flow, ensuring a good fit.

The retention service involves working internally with companies to ensure teams are effective and to determine if hiring is truly necessary, which is quite unusual for recruitment agencies.
