Showtime Spanish Episode 40 Hello and welcome to this last episode of Showtime Spanish. Perhaps the part I liked the most about Showtime Spanish was our telenovela "Verano Español" and today we are going to listen to the last chapter. As you know, at the end of episode number 7 Laura had just returned home where her boyfriend Angel was talking to his best friend Fiona. Well, let's see what happens. How long have you been here? Laura, listen. It's not for you. Good, good. You haven't been here for 24 hours and you're already dating my boyfriend. With your boyfriend? Thanks for telling me that. Shut up. My father was right. Your father? But what are you telling me, man? Laura, I'm sorry. I don't want to see you. I can't find you. That's why I'm back and maybe you're better, right? I'm leaving. I didn't know. Estar enfadado o enfadada con alguien to be angry or to be annoyed with someone? So let's make up the answer together. Laura is annoyed with Angel. Let's try that part. Laura está enfadada con Angel. Ok, so why is she annoyed? Well, it's because Fiona hasn't even been 24 hours in the country, in Spain. So, Fiona hasn't even been 24 hours in Spain. The way you would say that would be is not even 24 hours in Spain or does not carry even 24 hours in Spain. So, you remember the verb that you use for talking about the time that you've been doing something? It's llevar. So, she doesn't carry even 24 hours. No llevar. And then the word we can use here is ni 24 horas en España. Fiona no lleva ni 24 horas en España and Angel is chatting her up. Now, the verb that Laura used was ligar con alguien. That means to chat someone up or it can mean also to make out with someone as well. It sort of depends on the situation. But let's use it anyway here. And Angel is chatting her up, so ligar con alguien. Angel está ligando con ella. So, let's take the whole sentence. Laura is angry with Angel because Fiona hasn't even been 24 hours in Spain and Angel is chatting her up. Laura está enfadada con Angel because Fiona hasn't even been 24 hours in Spain and Angel is chatting her up. Let's move on to number two. Al día siguiente, Laura dé las cosas un poco más claras. De qué manera? So, we'll try to work out what the question means. Al día siguiente, Laura dé las cosas un poco más claras. Laura dé las cosas un poco más claras. So, literally, Laura sees the things a little more clear. She sees things more clearly. De qué manera? In what way? Okay, so Laura has realized that Angel will always be like that. So, to realize, the standard way of translating "realize" is to give oneself a count of something. So, Laura has realized the perfect tense here. We need to take "darse cuenta de" and put it into the perfect. That becomes "Laura se ha dado cuenta". That Angel will always be like that. So, Laura se ha dado cuenta de que Angel siempre será así. So, será the future tense of said. Laura se ha dado cuenta de que Angel siempre será así. Perhaps now she understands what other people say about him or what the others see. So, you could say, quizás ahora entienda lo que dicen los otros. Perhaps now, entienda, the subjunctive of entender, which follows quizás, quizás ahora entienda lo que dicen los otros. That which the others see. Quizás ahora entienda lo que dicen los otros. Okay, the whole thing. Laura has realized that Angel will always be like that. Perhaps now she understands what others see. Laura se ha dado cuenta de que Angel siempre será así. Quizás ahora entienda lo que dicen los otros. So, a nice straightforward question. What does Ramon want? And this is referring to the conversation that he has with Laura in the bakery in La Panadería. So, in that case, he wants to invite Laura to go to the party with him or he wants to ask her to go to the party. So, asking someone to do something in Spanish, you use pedir a alguien que haga algo because there's two subjects involved. So, he wants to ask her that she accompanies him. So, a little tricky. Ramon wants to ask Laura. Let's just do that part. And remember when you're asking someone for something, it's not asking a question which would be preguntar, but requesting something, it's pedir. So, Ramon wants to ask Laura. That becomes Ramon quiere pedirle a Laura. And notice that you have to use the pedirle. You have to get the indirect object pronoun in there as well. Ramon quiere pedirle a Laura to go to the party with him or to accompany him to the party. Now, if you're thinking to go to the party is going to be an infinitive, then that's not quite right here because it's following this idea of pedir a alguien que haga algo. So, what we need to turn this whole phrase round to is, Ramon wants to ask Laura that she accompanies him to the party. The company part, acompañar, needs to be in the subjunctive. So, Ramon quiere pedirle a Laura que le acompañe a la fiesta. Le, here, referring to Ramon. Ramon quiere pedirle a Laura que le acompañe a la fiesta. So, try that yourself, Ramon wants to ask Laura to go to the party with him. Ramon quiere pedirle a Laura que le acompañe a la fiesta. Ramon tiene una idea para poder verle a Laura en la primavera. ¿Cuál es su idea? So, Ramon has an idea that will enable him to see Laura in springtime. What is his idea? Well, Ramon could do an exchange in Scotland in order to practice his English. So, take the first part. Ramon could do an exchange, an exchange is un intercambio. Ramon podría hacer un intercambio en Escocia, in Scotland, in order to practice his English. Para practicar su inglés. Nice and straight forward this one. Let's take the whole thing. Ramon could do an exchange in Scotland to practice his English. Ramon podría hacer un intercambio en Escocia, para practicar su inglés. Pregunta número cinco. ¿Cómo va el refrán de Ramon? So, how does Ramon's say and go? Well, good friends are difficult to find, more difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. So, start with good friends, and remember in Spanish you would have to say the good friends. So, the good friends are difficult to find, remember that difficult has to agree with los buenos amigos. Los buenos amigos son difíciles de encontrar, more difficult to leave. So, the one we're going to use here is dejar, más difíciles de dejar, and impossible to forget. So, that becomes e imposibles de olvidar, and remember that it has to be e imposibles. So, you're replacing the word y and with e, so that it doesn't cause a problem running into imposibles. E imposibles de olvidar. So, the whole thing, good friends are difficult to find, more difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. So, the whole thing, good friends are difficult to find, more difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. So, the whole thing, good friends are difficult to find, more difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. So, what is Laura going to do as soon as she gets back to Scotland? So, she's going to put the photos of her stay in Spain in her Facebook, so that Estella can see them. So, take the first part, she's going to put the photos of her stay in Spain in her Facebook. So, the word for a stay is una estancia. So, she is going to put the photos of her stay, va a poner las fotos de su estancia en España en su Facebook, so that Estella can see them. So, that's a little more complicated, that becomes in order that Estella can see them, and the can has to, of course, be in the subjunctive. Para que Estella pueda to see them, verlas, and has to be las, because we're talking about las fotos. So, the whole thing, she's going to put the photos of her stay in Spain in her Facebook, so that Estella can see them. So, that's it for this episode of Showtime Spanish, and indeed, for the series.
