1202: Scottie wins the '26 Tour Championship

Blocky's kind of bottling it away right now, the bad, bad Bogey on on 13, the par five. >> I'm watching on mute, I just look up, he's pulled the pin from a bunker, like trying to hold one from the bunker, I mean, just, he is by, we'll get there, we're gonna chat tour championship. Scottie Sheffler, I believe, is gonna get come up, is gonna come up in that conversation as well. We're gonna dig in a little bit on the good, good situation, we talked about it a little bit last weekend, a lot of developments on that front over this past week, a lot of drama unfolded there, a bit on the LPGA and as mentioned, we'll come back. We're recording this here as the final group looks to be on the 14th hole up at the allied challenge presented by McClaire and Scottie Sheffler wins the tour championship. Mean Jo Dean wins the British Masters by three after a final round, 63, Ronnie Yinn wins the FM championship, and we are in a hole, Stephen Hawker has a two shot lead here on the champion's tour. This is absolutely wrong. Ben and I have a four ball qualifier this week. I cannot wait to put my my GTS driver into play in competition for the first time. I'm excited to go play a competitive golf this week. Tell the people. I mean, it was a solo round. I did shoot a 67 this week playing by myself in under two hours, but yeah, listen, it was unofficial rounders by myself. Can't enter at TC. Can't enter. Doesn't count. Tiger's 59 hour, though. That was an unofficial round too. And what it led to, you know, it's the highest I could have shot at the tour championship. Victor Halvin. He took a one shot lead into the final round of a Ryan Gerard got run down by Scotty Sheffler. He played his first 10 holes in three under par. He then birdied the 13th hole and bogeyed 14, but Halvin bogey the 13th as that was happening. Sheffler was back up by one there around this time. Also, some I would consider it to be pretty darn clear footage of Victor Halvin scraping the sand was shown on his backswing. They marked his bobbing from the tour came in and said we looked at this video. It does not appear that he yet to us that he touched the sand. Testing. Do you have solid images that that did make it clear he did touch the sand. It do wants to make the argument that the naked eye rule I could maybe listen to that. Yes. I think that's what they did on sky, but do you just need to be better there. That's all I'm going to say. I would tend to agree. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know if it was a rush thing because they were, you know, there's no commercials there for that final nine holes in the tournament and didn't have the time to cover it properly on TV. I don't know. It was, it was tough. Anyway, Scotty would go into birdie 16 to go up by two. It did not factor into the final of the tournament. So Victor Havelin did finish in solo second three shots back of Scotty. Ryan Gerard finished in third at minus 12. I was to say that that probably cost Ryan Gerard $1.3 million. That really could also say that like taking two out of the bunker also could probably cost it. It may very well have. It was it. We'll get to Scotty him a second. I promise. But there was a moment, like, of, oh, fuck is roll up. Is he this on it? Because I was screaming at the TV. Like, what is the point of replay if they're not going to overturn that? And I was like, oh, my God. It's kind of like a real sport. I got to do that about baseball and football all the time. Play stands on the field is called not, not, not conclusive evidence to overturn it. But Scotty doesn't, man, doesn't make it looks pretty easy. Just look like the best player in the world all over again. I don't know if you guys just want to roll the kind of same combo we have after every one of these. But third win of the year feels like about his eighth win of the year. He's, he's the dude, man. He's, he's the dude. It's only his third win of the year. Right. How about that? Well, it's, it's, yeah, the guy that, that should win wins, you know, it's kind of the, the headline here. I think there's plenty of, you know, the, the quote that stuck out to me the most this week was Victor Hovelin. And I think probably a number of other players got asked like, if you win this week, do you see yourself winning the tour championship or do you see yourself winning the FedEx Cup? And Victor said the tour championship, like it's, it's a free for all. Everybody starts at zero. It's just, you know, he's like, it's, this is very different than when I won in 2023. It's not really tethered to anything. And that's kind of how it was feeling. It was a very cool leaderboard with him and Gerard and Ludwig and, uh, got her up and obviously Scotty, like up at the top of the board. It was a good golf tournament in a vacuum, but it didn't, like this was the definition of what I think we're trying to fix in that it didn't feel like it was laddering up to anything until Scotty wins, right? And it's like, okay, well, you know what, he was the player of the year. He was the guy that had the best season. He's the guy that strokes gained this scoring average, this top five, this, like he, uh, it makes a lot of sense to see him up there. And the way that he did it is the way that he always does it, right? I mean, he, he chipped away with the irons. He nearly makes an ace on number two. Like maybe I was lucky that didn't go in. Uh, it was just a, uh, quintessentially Scotty. It's just funny, man, when you look at like his, his individual holes, you know, if you want to really like, if you, if you want to zoom out, you can see pretty easily. Why is the best player in the world? If you want to zoom in and actually look at the data, it's just every hole. It's just a little, a little gain here, a little gain here, a little gain here. Oh, that one was his worst shot and he, it was average, another, another gain here. It just stacks that up over 72 holes and it starts to look pretty inevitable. Uh, block, he just flagged on 14, by the way, uh, I, uh, did, I'm with you in that, like it was, it was a really good tournament on its face. And then nobody played good golf. Yeah. It was, and it's, it's, like, it's not an easy, there's some really tricky stuff and we'll get to some of the course setup stuff and kind of how easily, um, you know, place for these guys. But yeah, the guys that I thought, you know, dudes, um, didn't, didn't, they weren't very dude like today. I, I'm starting to think there might only be one dude guys. I think there might only be Robbo. It's not Johnny Robbo. Uh, I think Scotty went for the only dude, Sully, what, what'd say you? So when we try to, this is a nameless debauch, if you want to get out of the wrong, no, no, I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to, I have a hard time believing, uh, again, I was trying to like view this through the lens of like when we go back and do like the 94, 95 stuff, like, who were the dudes? Who are the dudes just kept doing it or they're all the time, winning or top five and all the time. And I have a hard time putting Rory not in that, you know, in that being a dude of this time period, right? And I, again, there's a, there's a whole other level that Scotty's at, but I still think there's like a, uh, a next, I will say that next layer of guys as the season went on, fell off and, and kind of refused to challenge him. I mean, Rory, Cam Young and Ron, the other guys that I said were in that class, like, don't, if we made the list right now, would not jump to the top, you know, it's, it has, it has been a thinning, if you will, of, of, of watching those guys go backwards and watch Scotty just reassend and do it again when it looked like, you know, is the rain over a little bit. We saw the bitchiest version of him. We've seen all, you know, of his career so far this past year, um, you know, just see some weird misses on the golf course. It was a down year in Stroke's game and in wins for him, but like, uh, he has 17, 13, 20 starts this year, T.C. 13 top fives. I know. Try to remind you guys, you don't have to tell T.C. Invented him. You don't have to tell T.C. about this. I said we, we're looking at a generational talent here in fairness. You've said that about 36 different guys, we're going to get to another one of those guys today. I think Tuesday, uh, I saw that I'm so with you and that where I think that separation comes from and what I walked away from today and I think maybe this gets into some of East Lake. East Lake was playing very, very, very hard, uh, in a number of different ways this week. And Scotty, I just don't think it's a surprise that Scotty's the guy that handles that challenge. You know, and I, I don't, I don't even mean this in an unfair way, but like you read some of Rory's quotes about, I don't want to play more than three times in a row. I don't want to do it, which all of which is Rory has earned in his fair and I'm glad he always, you know, kind of says what's on his mind. You just don't really hear that stuff. from Scotty. I feel like Scotty does such a good job of just like, man, if I'm, if I'm there, I'm going to try to, I'm going to do the same thing I always do. I'm going to, you're going to see the same Scotty pretty much every week, you know, the, it looks like a birdie from last year's minute birdie. Oh, less the writer. He's just going to, oh, man, God, who does he, who's the only, who's the only point to get? This is a lot easier people in the crowd. Let's go hurry up off. Oh, my, four holes left. One of them in the par five. This episode's a special treat for everybody watching live. Everybody, other recording is just going to be like, what the hell are these guys up to? But you know what I mean? It's, it's really the, I just think it's his commitment is like, dedication, his mentality that, you know, and then you couple that with, oh, yeah, drives it long and straight and he hits his irons better than anybody ever, almost, you know, it's just a, it can putt and when he does miss on these like East Lake kind of shave down, short game spots, like he flashes with the wedges and he's a great chipper. It's just, yeah, it's the same stuff every week, but it's, that's kind of the point, right? It's like, you know, hard it is to do the same stuff every week like that. It's really hard and he's done it for like four years now. So a few, a few stats, if you'll allow me, so far he's had 170 starts in his career. About 40% of those have been top five finishes. Tiger, yeah. Tiger was right at, it was stupid, right at 50% through the same amount of starts, which is again, absurd. But Rory is like below 30% through the same amount of starts. Phil was like 16% through 170 starts, just like just showing how ridiculous it is. He famously didn't win in any of his first 70 starts. This is win 22 in his last 100. So, you know, it's, this, this, this parts unfair. I'm taking a small sample, but 22 out of 100 is 22%. Of course, that's better than Tiger's career win percentage. Now granted, in the same period of starts from 70 to 170 Tiger, one 32 times. So it, you know, that was pretty peak time, and he, you know, Tiger's peak is better than, than, than Scotty's peak has been. But the rate he is winning at is absolutely completely absurd. And I don't see it slowing down. He is over a shot, better, per round than every golfer in the world, over a three year period, not a small sample, over a three year period. He is over four shots, better in a tournament than every player in the world. That is completely absurd. Looking index though. Hey, I would bet he probably goes, separates it more. I see absolutely no sign of him slowing down. I mean, if this was the dip, like I think he's probably getting back to a better, I think he'd be closer to 2025 next year, saying that now, then I think he would be. He's also got what, how were the kids? Like he had one right around the masters. Yeah. Yeah. And two maybe, like, doing it with a couple of toddlers running around. That's more impressive. Maybe this sounds like a late night dorm room talk, but I always, it's, it's really hard to compare like quarterbacks to just like the guy who lives down the street from you, you know, they're, they're not really doing the same thing. But in golf, like everybody kind of is. So it's like, there's like 30 million people to play golf in the United States. He's, he's a full stroke better than all of them. Every, every all 30, all 30 million. It's not even just like the other 10 guys that are at the top. It's like, no, everybody on planet Earth, he's better than all of all of them by that much. That's wild. And next up is Rory, prodigy, Rory, six time major winner, career grand slam winner, a full shot better over a three year period in which Rory has won two majors and has been excellent. He's been excellent over the last three years. That's the time frame that, you know, spans his, his swing change and everything that he made. Like it's, it's, it's really smart. Well, I think just comes back to like the consistency, right? Like there's just the floor is so high. Like that average, that average is not ever getting dragged down. It's just, it's every, every time he teased it up. Does he lock up player of the year with this? Like is it, they were certainly acting like that was the case. Was he the player of the year prior to this week? I forget what we said last week. We talked, I mean, I think we gave it to Wyndham last week. But is this same thing? Well, we said of Wyndham, if Scotty doesn't win the, the tour championship, I think this reverts it back. I think so, which feels silly to say also, because like, I beat that group, but you know, there's 30 guys at East Lake. Granted, it's the best 30 guys, but it's, it does feel a little strange that that's, it feels strange that what I just watched is, is the deciding factor. You know, that doesn't really have kind of the gravity feeling to it. But I certainly think he is for all the reasons that you mentioned about the season and the floor and all of that. And I get the argument of, you know, they both have three wins and Wyndham has the major and Scotty doesn't like being the deciding factor. But if I may, the, those two guys teed it up together in tournaments by my count 17 times this year. Okay. Here's the head-to-head how it went. Annex Scotty one, Phoenix Scotty one, Pebble Scotty one, Genesis Scotty one, players Scotty one, Masters Scotty one, RBC Scotty one, PGA Scotty one, Byron Nelson, Wyndham one, Scotty was third, Memorial, Wyndham, US Open Wyndham, Traveler Scotty, Scottish Open Wyndham, Open Championship Scotty, FedEx St. Jude Scotty, the MW Championship Wyndham, Tour Championship Scotty, 12 to 5 in times that they teed it up this year against each other. Scotty, Scotty beat Wyndham. That's the deal sealer for me, like way more consistent. Didn't win the major like, who's, who's year would you want? Who's year would you like take off the board first out of everybody? There's a different question like the PGA tour player of the year is I think. Totally agree. Who would you take overall? Well, who's you in that regard? Like if you're Scotty, I think would take Wyndham's year. I think he's just like, are we talking money? Are we talking, yeah. That's whatever. Like, what would you want? I mean, I don't know who the you is here, but like, what's the, I mean, Rory won the Masters this year. I think that would, that would be a big ass one. Like, I think, yeah, I think if you're Ryan Gerard, I think Ryan Gerard would rather have Scotty's year. Yeah. And I think if you're Rory, I think Rory would rather have Wyndham's year, that makes sense. Yeah. Or I don't think Rory would trade his year for, for Wyndham's year, though. I think right. Like those are all set. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody gets what they want. Yeah. I mean, Scotty finishing cuticle. Second place five times this year is wild. Five seconds, two thirds. He missed one cut. He was 18 and 19 cuts. Wyndham is five cuts. And a lot of those were just bad Thursdays that he was having and then just charged up the board. And he could have won the freaking Masters this year. Missed on the Masters playoff by one shot. Like he has a good set up. We don't have to get into it. He did. We can't get into it. Sorry. That's all right. Um, any, uh, what's the, what's the offland conversation tonight? I mean, by all measures, runner up the tour championship, you're just it off today. Yeah. Blading a blading a lob wedge into 17 and kind of fluff in the chip after that was just left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, probably the peak viewership hour. Just not leaving everybody with a good taste in their mouth tonight. 100%. It's, uh, again, in a vacuum, you move this tournament to May, and I think it like becomes really interesting to talk about all the X's and O's and blah, blah, blah. It's just really hard, man, that you're, you're kind of, uh, I will get around to answering your question. But you're, you're starting the week being like the essentially admitting this system's broken. It doesn't really work and we're going to completely blow it up. And then you get to Sunday and it's like, who's going to win? It's like fucking cares. Like, why didn't we announce this maybe after the tournament? Uh, anyways, so you get to Sunday and you're, it still kind of gets ginned up as like, you know, who's going to win the season here? And it's like, well, I'll probably not Victor Hoffman. That doesn't make a lot of sense. You know, so just to me, it was like a player that has been very spotty all year and clicked for the first couple of rounds, putter got hot, like it did at Valspar and then, you know, kind of just fighting to swing down the stretch. So it's, it's, it felt pretty, pretty black and white. Uh, but again, like you put it on that stage and it just can't help but feel a little identity list, which is kind of why it feels weird. Maybe. Yeah, it's like for jamming chip, not the FedEx cup finale. Yeah, really. I mean, Vic, uh, fun to see him up there. You know, I think this, I think this year was like a kind of stabilized would, like the freefall that he was in or less, right? Um, if third in Canada, he won the travelers, um, you know, played like had a relatively good year. Um, so I think that's something to build on. But yeah, I, with Vic, it's just, I don't know what it is, man. There's just something, like there's just something that's just always on the edge with him. I feel like we're just, just gripping the steering wheel really tight, trying to, trying to get it in a house and his putts don't ever seem to be like the right pace. Like if, like they're always like going pretty fast and he's trying to jam men or they just totally run out of gas and then like, you know, he had a lot of lips today. I think that was, that was kind of, you know, some of those could have fallen. Um, his bunker place horrible. I mean, like really, really bad. Yeah. And, uh, which is weird. Like I know his chippings never been his strength, but his bunker place just, yeah, and then just, yeah, I don't know, it's just, you know, like the shot on 17 just summed it up, solid. It was like, you hit a great drive on an uncomfortable driving hole. He's got what lob wedge in any, any, any, he's like, 100. it over the green. Yeah. So yeah. But but then again, like that can come about because you've been fighting your swing all day. Totally. So we're this is like I feel like after the tour championship in 2023, the I would say the exact opposite of what I'm about to say. But Havelin's ceiling feels weirdly a lot lower at the end of 2026 than I would have thought at the end of 2023. Like you will be both solid. He said he's not he's he's I know we're a lot of joke about that. Yeah. T.C. or the floor. T.C. famously took a number one overall at our little fantasy draft six year fantasy draft that we did at the beginning of 2024. I have an update for a point list. Yeah. Congratulations on your on your victory today. So for that one. Yeah. I did take Scotty with the second overall pick that worked out well for me. But his his raises floor like it's not like he's decreased his quality overall as a golfer just doesn't feel like he's gonna he has that ability to hit the noss and like blow people away. And you could have used some of that today. Just feels like it's too fleeting. Yeah. Right. Totally. It's tough for him to get to that to that highest level and sustain it. I'm not going to make the comparison. We don't need to talk about it. But it reminds me of someone that we don't need to talk about on the tour, championship podcast. I'll say, I'll say that. We were kind of going back and forth a little bit on on slack earlier. I'm curious what you said you liked watching watching it more this year than you have in years past. I feel like I did. And I was kind of, you know, I was like, oh man, am I getting heat checked here? You guys were, you know, not as not as high on it. I think it it's not the ideal time to see East Lake. It's August. And it's usually soppier. And it feel like it's usually hotter and more human and more miserable. And it just didn't kind of similar to last week in St. Louis. I know it's hot and human, but it didn't like permeate like the lethargic nature that comes with that didn't like come off the screen like it does in Memphis. And it just felt like there's a little bounce in the greens. So, an interesting pin is it some really interesting shots. And it was like I just don't know if me personally if I've given enough love to the redo. I don't think the golf course is like amazing, but they did a lot of very nice stuff to it. Add a lot of short grass, change a lot of stuff around and made for some uncomfortable shots. I, you know, you hit into some spots. I remember watching God are up on Saturday hitting the long left of the sixth hole, the par five. And he's on downslope. And he's just like aimed completely away from the pin and uses a backstop kicker to like whip the ball back towards the hole to like 10 feet and made the birdie. And I was like, did that, that is sick. Like that is way better to watch than just like circular greens, deep rough, straightforward bunker shots all the time. And yeah, again, it's not ideal, but it, I, it's a good, it was, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing kind of some of this like a hard hole location on three, the front right hole location on three today, made for some interesting shots, just Havelin's ball on 17 that he finned like rolling all the way off that green and getting pretty far away was just like, hey, there's some, some, a fair amount of stuff about East Lake, especially, you know, it's not the slot that it used to be, definitely. And I think we've said that. Yeah, I don't know. I think it's still like, it clears the bar for me. It would, and it would be so much better in the spring or later in the fall, if that was still part of the PGM tour season. I think we know that. But they don't want to be in the spring. It's not, I know. They're like, you know what, like we want to be the tour championship or bust. The fact that Tim Fincham granted them the tour championship in perpetuity is one of the most insane leadership decisions, maybe full time. It's, it's, it's much better than it was. I still don't think it's very good though. I don't think the routing is very good. I think it's, it's just really, really sloggy. And the energy level is never good on site. It's not, CBS did a better job. This year, like, I felt like it was more watchable. Like, I thought Saturday was actually a decent watch. I just feel like it's really tricked up too. And like it's, it's kind of a mediocre routing that they've had to trick up to make interesting. And like, you know, set, like, like 17s a good hole. 17s a really good hole. I think that's, it's cool. But it's just like, it's not, that's not shining through in the season ending championship, you know? Well, that's, I think it's so, I'm very aligned with what both of you are saying. And I think it's, it's so emblematic of like what this tournament feels like. I'm like, no, it's pretty good. It's pretty, yeah, it's okay. You know, it's, it's solid. They made some changes. They, they keep trying to make it better. And like, it's, you know, I think it's better than it was. It's kind of exactly how I feel about the tour championship, where I'm like, well, that might not be good enough for, for what it needs to be. Yeah. You know, and that's where I'm always like, I think it's the best version of kind of like what it, what it can be right now. I think it's a really good tournament golf course. I think the best player tends to win every year. Like, I don't think anybody wins there. And it's playing like fluky golf or getting away with it or just putting it down. Yeah. No, I think it's, it identifies a really good winner. It also just, and I hate to fall back on like the easiest, get out of jail free card of criticism. But like, it just doesn't make me feel too much. When I'm watching it, I don't know if anybody's watching that broadcast. And it's just like, man, I wish I was there. That looks awesome. I just, I'm dying. We got to go next year. And I think if you're trying to make this the capstone of the PJ tour season, and it all comes down to this, like, I just think that there's some intangibles, man, that you just, it's hard to, hard to explain, but you know when you see them, and I just don't think East like has those, try as they, try as they might. I think that like the, I'd never played Medina. Number three before the renovation, but I was just remember seeing it, you know, you had those par threes over the water, and otherwise, there's not a whole lot of going on. And it's not really interacting with the water. I feel very similar about East Lake. Totally. Of, it's, it's actually a really good piece of land. It's just routed the wrong direction. Like everything's kind of routed, uh, East West instead of North South. And I think there could be a lot more interaction with the lake. Uh, like 15's a good example of like, you got that t-box jammed back next to the road. And you have 20 buses just idling, man, like a few from, from the leaders. Yeah. DJ, you were like, yeah, a lot of you were going to turn your field, a lot of e, uh, two more, two more. Like I think the torch is just just gaslighted us for 15 years of saying, like, no, like you guys don't get it. This is the torch, I mean, ship. This is the FedEx cup. This is really important. This is the fitting venue for it and all that. And I think, I think everybody's finally realized, like, no, like we can do a lot better. And that's not like, I don't even think that's a slight on East Lake. I think it's just, hey, let's play offense instead of tripling down on something we know isn't working. Uh, to be clear, I think it clears the bars of PGA tour venue. I do not think it clears the bars at tour championship finale venue. Like, and yeah, we had a whole podcast if you're looking for, you know, stuff on the new match play finale that's coming up. We did a podcast on Tuesday. If you missed that one, kind of breaking everything down with a full reaction to that one. But I think it's like, I don't know, and not to open up a big finale discussion here. But I would say like the tour would just make the most sense if there was just one big end of your tournament that felt like the biggest PGA tour event, like the players. And we're not going, we're not coming down here in August. So that's off the table. Like, I'm not even like a million percent positive. Like a match play finale is going to feel like the tour championship. Like, I think, I think we were also ignoring the elephant in the room and that like that already happens four or five times a year. So it's like, I mean, it's almost like by default because of the last 50 years of professional golf. It's like, at best, this is probably the sixth best thing of the years. Yeah. Maybe seven. And like, it all comes down to this. Like, well, that's pretty. That's stackers of weird yourself. Yeah. So as long as you're working with the assumption like this is going to be the best PGA tour event of the year, it does change like what you're trying to get out of it. And again, as we said to them, very happy with the direction they're going over this. But and I do agree with with what you said on like, it does play different now after the renovation. And like, there is real consequence to the shots. And yeah, it is just bite. It's real. Yeah, it feels like you're watching real golf. You know, it's yeah, it's just not it's just not all the way there, which I don't really can be at that venue. It just it doesn't feel big. Yeah, it feels like it feels very vast and big like the course does, but it almost that almost sucks the energy out of it and the fans are far from the action. And it's like the build out isn't big. The I'm not saying you need a big build out because they're going to do the opposite thing at the the, you know, match play stuff. But even just like the commercials like that. That Accenture commercial, like the Proud Partners Coca-Cola, was it Coca-Cola Accenture and Southern Company? I don't think they, I just don't feel like they've gotten anything out of this over the last, however many years, especially Coca-Cola. I'm just trying to figure out which one I want to shout out. I'll say Ryan Gerard, I think Ryan Gerard was unequivocally proved that he belongs and he needs to get better with his wedge play from today. But overall, it was, yeah, he was pretty relentless this year. And I think he's proven that he's going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next two or three years, I think. - And just seems like, you know, for what it's worth. Just seems like a delightful guy. You know, I really like the chasing Sunday stuff with him. I like, you know, kind of his going back to the open and there's him getting a little bit more shine. I mean, it just seems like somebody that I'm like, I'm excited to have on my TV, which is a hard bar to clear in professional golf. - He started the year rocking. He was T2 at Sony. - I was playing World. - He was second at Sony. He was T2 at American Express. And then he finishes it, you know, he lost in a playoff at the memorial. He had a couple other top tens as well. I'll play both the open and then, you know, finishes it strong in the playoffs as well. - I check my lineups, T.C., I had them in the lineup this week. I don't see how I did. He's a fantasy favorite of mine. Always, always a good value. - I think it's remarkable, too, that he's turned his putting around from being like, like a truly horrific putter to actually gaining strokes with him. - Yeah. - So he, uh, I had JJ spawn this week. I got an absolute bond. - Oh, that one's stuff. - They got a five injury report on his speech into DMs. - Yeah, exactly. - I love-- - He's going to protect the gamblers. He's got to replace the groups on his, he's got to replace his lob wedge after this week for how many just, you know, how far he hits it. Now, he was 10 of 10. He had his first 10 fairways today. Didn't miss till he got to 14. The fairway that's almost impossible to hold. He's just a very impressive ball striker, which, you know, the golf swing looks a little funny, man, but I would, I think we need more weird golf swings. - 100%. - Trevor had a great breakdown, too. - Yeah. - The side by side of him in Scotty, and just showing his, you know, his side bend, and how his heads basically parallel with the ground when he makes impact. It was just really, really good breakdown. - Yeah, it's all, yeah, I'm going to, you said who kind of took the leap. I'm going to ignore that you said that because I don't, that was not the prompt you're right. - That's not exactly how I took this, but this is a bit of a strange one, perhaps, and I think it'll lead to a larger discussion about today, maybe. I didn't realize how good Ludwig's season actually was if you look at the numbers. And I know he didn't win, and I know maybe he has a massive closing problem, but I think like the way that I've viewed him just from a zoomed out perspective, I'm like, oh, man, he took a huge step backwards, and in reality, like he finished in the top 10, like almost half the time, he teed it up this year. I think he played 20 events, I think this is his ninth top 10, is worse finished than he played well with the majors. You know, again, like finished well with the majors, maybe didn't play well with the majors, but worse finished, there was T21. I know it's a lot of like non-competitive stuff, but if you look at the, again, maybe don't like this, maybe you do. If you look at the strokes gained over the last six months, he's been the third best player in the world. It's, it's kind of crazy. No, you cannot do, you're not allowed to do that. You're not allowed to look at that. TCC, all right. I think TCC is going to each check me. I think it's going to be my negative. Totally, and that's why I think it's interesting. It can go, it can go either way, where it's like, I would love to sit here and be like, that guy fucking sucks. And it's like, he plays really good every week to be kind of a shitty golfer. It's just a very fascinating, very fascinating. That said, massive closing problem, TCC. We need to talk about it. Like, I cannot, cannot win. But he's got, I can't let's see what I saw at the players. You might have the big tone syndrome going right now. We have to go, there's a, there's a nap we did this several years ago, where it was like, dude, I could just see him being around a lot. And I just don't know how hard he's going to peak. Like, does he have the peak weeks? Does he put good enough, you know, to, to win? Like, you just have to have out of, out of standard deviation putting weeks to win on tour. And he just doesn't seem to have, he's a good putter. But doesn't seem to ever get hot, hot, like, hot enough to just like slam the door. He's a good putter. Yeah, he ranks, like he ranks, what is he? 87% of my tests. If you want some of my tests that don't like, I don't like watching him put. I hate how it looks. I hate how rigid it looked. I just, I'm out on that. 87th percentile putting. We got him in the, I think it's pretty good. We got him in the, uh, the, the mallet now. I'm happy about that. I just, I don't think it can feel like anything except for a big disappointment and love this year. So he's, he's my negative one of just he, you know, yes, he put himself in position in these things and then he kicked it away when he was in position. So, um, I think the, like, the, you know, the results should look a lot better. I mean, 16 of 19 cuts made $7 million, plus whatever he made today. He finished really well. But like, even the, there's, there's no seconds. There's no solo thirds. It's a lot of like T fours T fives. Total eights. So that's just not going to get it done for me and we need to do better. There's a little bit better. There's several of these players where I have these emotions on Sundays of like, I kind of want to root for this guy to win, but man, T.C. is going to be insufferable if it happens. And like that threat looms. And I always say it's about like loving the threat doesn't feel like like it's looming. You know what I mean? Like when he comes up the board, I'm not like, oh, shit, here comes love. Like it's just kind of like, yeah, I don't think he's probably going to make it sweeter. When he does turn that corner, which yet this I kind of regret not making this my guy. I thought I thought T.C. was going to take him here. But like, I feel the kind of the opposite when God are upset there. Of like, oh, he's around. He's sniffing like I he's a problem. It's got to be dealt with here. So I could have taken God up here. But I think I mean, one three times this year we we we we saw that one. We've talked a lot about him. I want to give it a shot. It was be funneling today though. It was. He was just kind of off today. Yeah. But like he's he's got enough credit in the bank with me of like getting up near the top of the board and getting shit done Like you you're not gonna hit a hundred percent of those you're gonna have times where you get up at the top of the board and do not have your best stuff like I don't think I I Zero points lost in my book for God are up today like that just I was kind of impressed he was competing on that golf course to begin with but I want to give a shout out to see what Kim see what Kim has been around for a long time It's been a really long time since he won the players back in 2017 and he had to like by far the best season He's ever had I mean gaining almost a full shot per round on his numbers from last year was always a bad putter He is like almost all the way up to like base He's a 64th percentile putter now, which is a massive leap for him hitting his iron play is up reaching the Seventh percentile. He had the best iron year of his career. He's a delightful guy by all accounts. He was great in chasing Sundays I Are on chasing Sunday the the PGA tour thing I feel like even after watching that when he comes on the screen I light up a little bit and I get excited to watch him and His he had a great hole out on 10 today. He was playing with Justin Rose just some Rose dunked one on nine They were having a blast. It was just a great great season For cebuke him didn't have like a stamping victory only had zero wins this year But seven top five finishes 14 finishes in the top 20 as well Just a I just a massive leap for cebu and I look forward to watching the presence cup as well Totally agree also think you could a I think everything you said about Ludwig I think kind of applies to cebuke him a little bit We as soon as the lights started to get bright this year. He looked like a different player and like none of those none of those were ultra competitive Top five top 10s either but I agree with Everything you're saying. Yeah A lot of a lot of other guy. I mean again I don't think Ludwig had a better season than like Matt Fitzpatrick Alex Fitzpatrick Of course, you know, like there there's a lot of a lot of guys that took Bridgeman even though I would put on their bridgeman back to back toward championships for him. I think the the biggest thing there just how DJ views Ludwig versus how he views Cebu and He you're pretty immediate like Cebu wasn't even close on Sundays. We're like neither was Ludwig neither was Sure, but I my point I think it's I think it's what I think Ludwig must have like a bunch of horrible finishes I'm like, oh no, he doesn't the floor is like crazy high I think it's one of those things where like where we internally put their Floor and where we think that they're sealing is actually at because I know I'll throw this out here right now and Soli we've talked about this at length and you're gonna disagree with this, but phenomenal season for Cam Young Yeah, I don't know how you can you any I don't know understand how anybody could say it wasn't a the best season of his career money Stroke-scained you name it wins like phenomenal. Are we disappointed by this season? Hell yeah, we are Extremely disappointed just like see who I'm sure is super disappointed how well he played like just didn't even like get close to getting a win but man the only other name that I think Has a man really brought up was mentioned once is just Alex fix Patrick from being like The constant little brother. Hey, he's gonna get like the kind of the charity case to being like holy shit, man Like he's way better than I thought he was and like he's Alex Fitz Fitz Patrick like he's not just little fits anymore He can stand on his own Yeah, I mean we could do this for for a long time, but really it is like You almost had to finish the season pretty hot to get a mention here like one name that like a season We should most definitely shout out as some of like Matt Fitz Patrick like three wins the season best season He's had on the PGA tour on top of that. I guess but Sanders softly Again, not a not a bad season. He had 20 starts. He only had three top fives all year long though Like we just we saw him have 10 top five finishes in in 2024 Obviously had some injury stuff in 2025 didn't get off to a great start there And it was a struggle overall, but I was expecting a bounce back from Xander this year to at least that level pre 2024 Which again, I think we might be looking at that one as a peak and a not a fluke year But just a peak year that you might not be able to recapture But he didn't even kind of come close to that two strokes game level that he has kind of lived at They data golf literally named like the X score Like that's two strokes game per round like that the nickname was just because Xander did that for many many years And he felt short of it way short in 2025 and fell well short of it again in 2026 and feel like it's a problem It's a little it's it's it's iron play has definitely come down But really I mean he was like one of the best putters in the world and it's just now he's a slightly above average putter And he never I mean he was gaining a half shot per round on the greens for a sustained four or five year period Like he was a very very good putter just not the same quite peak and then yeah, the iron play is definitely definitely taking a dip Yeah, yeah, no no notes What do you agree? What it's it's a was he involved in a tournament that this like that was uh, what was it was it the US open open? I forget which one was where it was just where he or she was like you get through like 36 holes and he's kind of lingering and you're like Oh, it's time he's gonna make a move. He's gonna turn into Xander and it's just it was big spots that he just Uncharacteristically went backwards. You know and crazy thing is he was third at the players T9 at the masters T7 at the PGA T11 at the US open and T18 at the open championship So the worst finish in a major was T18 this year Yeah, high floor. That's great. We're gonna need just a little bit more out of him. I think yeah, I will I'll go next. I this one's fairly obvious. I think I think he certainly would agree with this as he said as much after wind him But I will say Brooks, you know, didn't really know what to expect saw that I think you were you were kind of on this block after the returning member program was enacted and just like hey, I don't get too excited this guy might not be The guy that you think he is or was going back to 2018 2019 Didn't know I wanted to believe you know, I thought I wanted to think he'd come in with some spite and some some hard work He does seem like he's working hard. He seems like he's committed He seems like he's done and said all the right stuff. It seems like he really likes being back on the PGA tour But the results just have not followed did not follow This week out there in one or this year one top 10 at the cognizant T13 at the players probably is best Full performance, you know, full tournament performance the year T12 with the masters in a smaller field And then just nothing going in the second half of the season clearly frustrated after he didn't make the playoffs I can't make anything, I can't just, can't make anything and probably a guy that just, you know, it seems like he's been through a lot just the last couple of years, certainly on the course and off the course as well, but probably needs to just shut it down and maybe read, you know, kind of get reinvigorated and fire up EGL, baby. Oh god, that's right, he's joined a TGL. Yeah, congratulations to the people of Detroit on that one, I forgot about that. But yeah, that was just, that was disappointing, I was hoping for, hoping for better. Yeah, it's not, it's not good at golf anymore, unfortunately, as of right now and I, I hope it changes because it's not, it was kind of worst case scenario, like he's, he's back, but he's not involved and I do appreciate his competitive nature and he, you know, wants to be on the more competitive tour now and I think he has regret about how things went, that's not been a secret at all, but yeah, next step up and I, it doesn't seem like he's mailing it in to your point, like he's working hard and I don't, I don't know what to expect next year. I wouldn't, in golf, like hard work doesn't necessarily translate to success. I don't know if he's got any magic left. I, I'm suspicious. I would, I would, I would, if I was to predict next year, I would say like flirting with that top 90 again, uh, to make it, to make the championship level for 20, 28. When did he come back, what, uh, his first event this year was farmers in February. So he was there from the beginning. Um, yeah, that's a little surprising that, I don't know, I think with a good off season ahead of him and, and when he didn't get off to a championship series, he couldn't take sponsors, you know, he didn't get all those events. Yeah, I mean, maybe I was a little harsh to, like, to be on that 90 line, um, he, he feels like, if he gets a full year, without all the hubbub and all that stuff, like a full off season, I think he's playing in that 50 to 70 category. Yeah. I get, the only pushback I would have going all the, not to compare everybody to Scotty, but to use it as an example is like, it's not like Brooks was ever weak to weak guy, totally ever, you know, he was peak for the major's guy. I'm just, this is all, I'm going to put all my eggs in this basket and this is going to be all that matters. And maybe he can, I almost in a weird way, like, maybe he can get back to being that guy because I don't think he's ever been Scotty, I'm going to show up at the Byron Nelson. I'm going to treat it like the US open and they're both going to look pretty similar. Like, I don't, I don't know if he's going to become that guy at 37 years old. Um, but I, yeah, I don't know, he just, he remains a very interesting character, he, you know, in a, in a tour of fairly uninteresting people, I think he's, he's one that my eye continues to be drawn to. Like, he was playing pretty good golf early on. He had the, he was top 10 and down Palm Beach, a cog, T 13, the players, T 18 at Balsbar, or T 12 at, at, at, at, this is just coming across your desk. This is still from a couple of minutes ago. No, I know, but it's just like, I just think like, like, obviously he was, he was, he was a little banged up there mid season, but like, I don't know, I don't, I don't think it, his, like, I, and I know what you're saying about like his, his peaks and valleys and stuff, like where he's just on cruise control some years, um, but you know, like he's, I think even some of those years, like he's still making 5th, 14, 15, 16 cuts and, and playing well. He's just not winning a bunch, but it's weird because his path, it kind of seems like his path back to being one of the dudes is like, he's going to have to figure it out at the other events, you know, like, yeah, it's just, it remains, remains interesting. Yeah. I mean, looking back, he was T nine at the cog, T 13th at 12th, he, uh, am I an idiot, and this is what I'm doing, South of Cuff, masters, exemption, we have to get five years from the end of the year. I'm trying to do the 2023 O kill. So, yeah, I've been 24 or 25, 26, like two more years of master's exemption left. Is that right? I mean, that's, that's, um, and British open. Yeah. Yeah. So shit. Anyways, um, any other notes, uh, from this tournament, um, I know Tigers of rain as the career money winner on the PGA tour is officially over, um, we may need an inflation adjusted leaderboard, uh, in this category, but Scotty, uh, Scotty is now the career money winner, uh, in the history of the PGA tour, uh, couple Scotty clips we can play if you guys don't mind. Let me use that and all the examples when people are like, I, I'm going to compare these guys, but Scotty want more money, man, it's all about the money. Yeah. Do you feel like you're fighting something to swing off the tee just to get in a couple of bad spots? I know one missing right, both days, is that something just in the head or just like early on, just kind of, I mean, there's not a bounce fence in the life that didn't really hit too bad of a shot there. And then, you know, you get a lie, which can advance more than 80 yards. So no, I wouldn't say anything is in my head. Okay. Thank you. Question. I'm eight on that Scotty. I don't people don't like it. I did. I dig that. Yeah. That's good stuff, I think. You had quite a lengthy answer, uh, about setup stuff that I think is in line with a lot of discussion we've had over golf course setup, uh, over many of the years. I promise we won't get too long winded here, but this is a longer clip here, but I thought this was a really interesting and, and on the more thoughtful side, um, for Mr. Schuffler. Really, really large green complexes like these, and they tuck the pins very close to the edges. It's, it's a balancing act between how much you want to bite off. And then, you know, it's like, am I going to try and squeeze it into a pin where it's three yards off the edge. And if I miss it on the short side, I can't get up and down and have 15 feet coming back. And there's a lot of that out here. There's a lot of pins that are on grain changes, um, you know, there's certain holes where just guys are making a ton of bars, like, like the ninth hole, you know, the ninth hole. I looked over the last few days, and I actually asked him scoring today just because I was curious. You've seen, I think, between 87 players going through over the course of, of three days, you've got 79 parts, 79 parts at 87 players. It seems high, it seems high to me. That seems very high. So I, it's almost like, well, I mean, let's just skip it at this point, you know, if we're going to make par, what's the point in playing the whole to be fair? What did you hit? I hit a five with today, and, um, you know, part of its design, part of its setup, but I actually thought it was better from the back box because you might see a few more bogies. Um, but, you know, I asked him scoring just out of curiosity, and, uh, you know, it was just a ton of bars again. So I don't love stuff like that. I, I love seeing rewards for good shots and, and punishments for bad. And I think sometimes, um, especially when you look at these modern golf courses, they do a lot of the same stuff to, to the golf courses. They make the fairways bigger, they make the greens bigger, and then in order to protect par, you know, we shove the pins up against edges, and that's why I think you see the scores get really close. Like they are this week. Um, like I said, it's a balancing act between how much do I want to bite off? Like you look at, like the 17th hole yesterday was a shot where I had a good number, like the number, hit a good shot, I get a bad wind gust, and all of a sudden I'm in a spot where I can't get it within. I mean, I hit a unbelievable pitch and I had, you know, 12, 15 feet for par. And in that moment, you're like, man, I probably shouldn't attack there. But at the same time, it's like, if you're into 15, 20 feet a lot, you know, you look at like the, like the, you know, what, what hole is it today, the 13th hole for me. You know, I'm a spot there left side of the fairway where pins in the back of the green, you know, it's three from the back right edge. It's four from the, the back edge and it's like when swirling, you know, I'll just play to touch short of it, I have a 15 footer, hit a good pot and burn the edge. And little stuff like that over the course of an event, I think, you know, it can bring people closer together. And like I said, I'm, I'm not a fan of that when it comes to, to set up. Hell, yes. Yeah. I was going to say there's a lot of, a lot of familiarity. I could, I could notice a lot of people quoting the mink this week as far as the test that was being being presented. And that's why just he was asking me earlier, she's like, why do you think this place is boring? Like I'm just, I'm just curious. I'm like, I struggle to, I'm struggling to articulate it. It's hard to explain because it seems like they're doing a lot of the work. Not the right stuff, but I'm like, ah, Scotty actually explained it very, very well there. You know, it's just a lot of, you can't really force it, which should be a feature instead of a bug in pro golf. Like you got to wait for the green lights, but at that point, you're kind of just watching people poop out from 30 feet a lot all day. And it just isn't, isn't very dynamic, you know? And it's incredibly simple here. You don't have to put pins three from the left four from the back when they have seven iron coming in instead of wedges. Yeah. I believe the video, uh, from good, good that everyone is seen by now. It was posted on Friday, August 21st. It was a parody video of, uh, I believe the, the movie or the series obsession. It involved Garrett Clark, the one of the founders, quote, what's the quote you're using there? Uh, parody, apparently usually parodies like tied back to the actual thing. It was just, they said that, but I don't, I don't know, sorry. Keep going, keep going. Anyways, the video shows him in the stage acting they're doing. Hit push, collide with a girl, stand over her and say, do not touch my driver. It's extremely unfunny. The internet got very upset about this. Um, good, good, issued a quote apology, uh, on Saturday, August 22nd. A lot of people were not thrilled with that apology, including Brian Rolap, uh, as made clear in his comments this past Tuesday. Uh, CEO Matt Kendrick, he took responsibility, said, good, good is changing. It's creative review process. Callaway CEO Chip Brewer, uh, explicitly stated that Callaway did approve the ad before posting said the approval shouldn't have happened. They're going to launch some internal external reviews. Uh, what has happened this past week, hours before the scheduled premiere, golf channel postponed the big break. Good, good, uh, the new series they had there. Because a sponsor asked to have its branding removed. Uh, that was revealed to be, uh, Dick's golf galaxy. I believe was what that was. Dick's and golf galaxy and eventually PGA tour superstar and target pull all of their good, good merchandise. Um, there was a video posted by Garrett as an eight plus person, uh, eight plus minute video kind of an explanation, uh, behind it all called it, you know, terrible concepts that he was cringing almost immediately after seeing the final product. That was not the end of the news. Callaway terminated its three year, uh, deal, uh, relationship with good, good, effective immediately pledged a million dollars to organizations working to prevent violence against women, uh, and support survivors. Good, good. Then with Drew as title sponsor of the PGA Tour event in Austin, uh, and then eventually golf channel goes, uh, beyond the postponement and shelves and cancels the, this season of big break. Good, good, uh, we've not done yet. Uh, Matt Kendrick, uh, logged on was online, uh, this past week on X, the everything app went after Callaway publicly. Um, we had a lot of 39, right? Had a lot of other tweets that have, uh, since been removed, uh, uh, I'm, I, it's not loading as I'm trying to pull up this exact tweet. If somebody has the language, uh, there I'm trying to pull it up. But, um, yeah, that, because this is the one that went, I got the line. Oh, yeah, yeah, uh, yes, it says interesting. The Callaway Golf asks us to make an ad, then approves it, then asks us to take the fall, then drops us in a coordinated media blitz, and covers it up by giving a million dollars away, thinking everyone will be okay with it. 30 for 39 will be legendary, uh, which was a moment of levity and, and, and, and laughter in this, in this quite serious situation. There's what three a.m. uh, three 38 a.m. He claimed he was up early as well, not up late in this. Rising dry, baby, but, um, talked about some legal action in some tweets, deleted that and confirmed later that he was not serious about taking legal action against golf galaxy all of this. Where do you guys want to start with this one? What's the, what's the question to be asked here? What's the, uh, what's the opening? DJ, you had a whole curriculum plan, right? I, man, uh, yeah, stay with me for a second. I feel like I, I thought about this so much this week. Uh, just couldn't, couldn't escape it. It was one of those like, saw the ad was like, oh, that's, you know, this will probably be the, the same normal cycle. And it just kind of kept going and going and going and I, I just like, yeah, just kind of one of those things you can't really look away from. It was just everywhere. And I, I feel like I, I took like kind of a whole lap around the sun as this was kind of all going this week. And I, I feel like that you can kind of break it down into, I feel like there's the 101 class here, which is just like, man, what a, what a horrible ad. That was, that was awful. Like, I can't believe anybody did that. I can't, you know, right afternoon. We're just like, man, like, that was crazy. Oh, they finally deleted it. I'll see what comes to this. And it was just, it doesn't make any sense. It's not a parody because there's, it's not a joke. It's just like a, it's just nothing. It's just a, it's just bad. But it was kind of one of those like, I'm sure everybody will kind of, you know, it'll be the normal internet. So I go and everybody will kind of content on the internet. There's bad golf content on the internet, right? Yes, uh, 201 class kicks off. And it's kind of like, wow, this is broken contain. This is like, this is really taken off. This is kind of everywhere, which I think makes a lot of sense and is very fair because if you are outside of golf, if you don't have any context on who these people are, if you're even like a little predisposed to not liking golf, it's not needless to say if you have any history of domestic violence or anything in your life and you just see this 15 second thing pop up. And it's like, the internet's mad about this. Do you want to watch this 15 seconds? I don't know how you couldn't watch it and be like, what the fuck is that? But that is, I understand. So again, why people got like very, very, very mad about it and kind of how the whole spiral kicked off. And then, you know, once the brush fire starts, like it just, it just goes. It starts showing up on CNN's Instagram or whatever. It just, it just puts out the bad signal for kind of everybody come take a look at this thing. And when you do that from the outside looking in, like, you kind of have no choice but to take it on its face, you know, and like, it's not like, I'm going to, let me dive into who good good is. And the fact that they started good, good girls and the fact that they've been around for a while. I think you just are like, let me, let me watch this 15 seconds and kind of judge it on its, on its merits. And it's not a good 15 seconds. I think that's a, it's pretty easy to understand how that happened. Three oh one class, we're dropping everything. Everybody's pulling out. We're like, we're pulling the hats from the shelves. We're canceling sponsorships. We're canceling the big break. We're pulling a TV show. I think it kind of starts to be like, okay, well, like he didn't, it was a joke. Like he didn't actually push her down. It was a joke. Okay, it was like, and then I think everybody understands that this was like a really, really dumb thing. And I don't know how you can make these guys feel any worse. And are we taking this just like a little tiny bit too far? And then the 401 class, I think is like, wait, are people just trying to get out of these deals? Like, what, you know, like, why did this happen so fast? What all of this just starts to feel a little bit strange? And so it's just been a very weird, weird week. And I don't know where I totally fall out on it other than just kind of a bunch of questions and a bunch of like the same questions everybody else had. Like, how did this get made? Why does they have such a long leash to do this stuff? Why is there nobody around telling them this is a stupid idea? All the way down to just like, wow, we pulled like a whole TV show. And what happens to those people who are probably trading on like exposure from that TV show? That's not going to air. And like all of all of that stuff. So just a million questions, a million uncertainties, and a million just like head scratchers for me. I think he had both, he had kind of the the non golf crowd. And then you had the core golf crowd joining up as well with all shrink movement. and just, I think people that tend to resent COVID golfers who, you know, change the nature of the game or the, you know, like, I think people that aren't buying into golf as it always has been, right? And when good good is the, quote unquote, safe, kind of vapid teeny-bopper brand, and they're no longer the safe, like, when there's, they kind of use their, they lose their utility on that front, I think, right? - Yeah, I think that's, yes, I see what you're getting at. - 'Cause they're old work, they're very commercialized, they did what a $45 million round of investment money. It's very much like, hey, this is very much commercial endeavor to sell stuff to, you know, to younger golfers, right? And then, and then that's where, in your 401 class deeds, that's where I'm the, you know, I'm the conspiracy kid at, you know, at the front of the class saying, hey, you know, do any of these kids actually have the money to purchase these drivers or, you know, or are these guys extremely hard to work with? Where, you know, sales weren't great, and the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, and your two or your three, that's possibility. - That's where I'm at, is like, if I wanna be cynical, it's like, was it not going great? Did people not wanna be in this business or did everybody get like the same moral conscience kinda on the, on the same week? I'm like, I don't know, call her me a little cynical on that, that everybody would stand up and do the right thing, so to speak. That doesn't always go that way. I don't know, it was, I see where you're getting at that like, yeah, they're kinda supposed to be the boy band, right, or the, you know, the pop band. And in the pop band, the boy band's not supposed to come with any baggage room. - Right, and that's where it's like, it's just very, I don't know, not funny, it's just strange to me that it's like the first time that it's like, no, we're gonna do something, we're gonna push it. It's just like, oh, wow, you guys missed. Holy smokes, that was not even close to being how you do that. And that's where it, it just circles all the way back to like, whoa, that's probably why there's ad agencies. That's probably why there's people who do these things, who write skits, who do all of these different things because I think that it just feels to me like it was, just made by people who had no intent to make a statement or to do, I think they just completely whipped and were so naive on like, oh shit, you guys thought, that's how you guys perceived it, you know, like that. And of course that, like again, you go back and watch that 15 seconds in a vacuum and it's like, of course that's how people saw it. It's just shocking, man, that the road from inception of an idea to publish is so short. And I sound like an old man here, I know, but I'm like, I've been doing this in golf now for like almost 20 years and it's like, man, when I was that aged, you know how hard it would have been to get like an idea that me and my friends came up with, pushed through to like a global billion dollar brand to like put out as a piece of marketing. That would have taken a year and a half to happen. And now it's just like, yeah, nobody really looked at it before it went out. Yeah, I don't know. - Well, it's worth calling out Garrett's explanation came from like this idea came from the good, good marketing team, right, which is like, you know. - Well, that was part of the problem with their whole apology too, was like, hey, this isn't representing who we are as a brand. Or like, you know, everything was so detached from like, no, you guys are just the dudes on camera, on YouTube doing this stuff. Like you are the brand, that's who you are. You know, like you can't distance yourself from that. Like you should have said it was a shitty idea. - Yes. - On the flip side of that, I think we have been in the shoes. I know I personally have been in this spot where we've been a part of something we've done that I was like, a little hesitant on or I kind of felt a little something in my stomach. I should have said something, but I did it anyways when we posted it as soon as we posted it was like, oh, this was stupid, why didn't I say something? I should have, there's almost like, you know, it can happen in content creation of like, yeah, I'm not really down with this idea and I don't see the vision, but like I got 50 other things going on and somebody else playing this out and did this whole shoot planned out and I'm not going to be the one that shoots it all down. That, I can see it getting through that part. I can't see it getting through like Callaway Review and all that, that's the part that is just absolutely insane. But I can empathize a little bit with something going out that turned out horrible and you wish you would have spoken up and said like, I don't really want to do this or I didn't. And when you're, I guess where I'm, I feel like I'm overly apologizing for this, but like, where I also empathize, like they're just, they're there shooting it and filming it. You don't know what it's going to look like in post while you're filming it and shooting it if somebody else is adding it. Now you could have reviewed it and stopped it. That, there's no excuse for that, but like. - But the premise is like knocking in horrible. - Yeah, stupid. - But I got to, but I think that the premise makes sense to me. If you, if you give them all the benefit of the doubt in the world, it's just like, if you touch this driver, you're going to be possessed and you're just going to want to hit drives it. Like, I'm like, okay, that's kind of dumb, but like I get it, but just like, man, dog, you edited like the worst possible combination, the worst possible madlib of that idea came out in, in that 15 seconds. And that's where it's like, that's where I'm with you, so I'm like, oh man, I feel pretty, that's, that's tough for the people who don't want to micromanage or didn't want to tell the editor how to do it or whatever. - That's also where like, hey, this is a pretty big deal for you, you have your own driver coming out. - To just mail that release of it. - Don't be that detached from your operation that you're not getting eyes on this, I think. And then also, I mean, I think Calaway's, Calaway's statement, like I do think Calaway needed to probably wear more of this, from like they've leaned hard into the good, good stuff and all of that, but I do think there's also a certain element of it is the, you know, the other, like just the traditionalist within golf are basically looking for a reason to say fuck those guys. Like they, you know, like shrink, shrink, shrink, I hate those guys, which I think you're totally right. - It felt like a powder keg that was just like enough is enough. This is the last, the last moment. - Which again, is where it starts to go off the rails and like I think part of the reason it, I certainly felt this at least like myself is you, you watch all this happen and it just becomes such a weird conversation that I feel like any rational person is just like, whoa, I'm not, I'm not getting involved in that, man. So then you just get like the two polar opposite ends of the conversation just screaming at each other, which is not new, that's what tends to happen in every issue anywhere in the world now. And I feel like it happens in golf now and it just ends up feeling like really charged because people don't, don't go there all that much. - Yeah, I think the other, I mean, it's kind of part and parcel with just that whole rebellion or pushback against the YouTube golf, that sort of thing, like you're seeing it the same thing with the Grant Horvath 200 dollar kids clubs as well, which is like, oh, like you're selling 200 dollar, like I know he said they're not plastic, plastic kids clubs, like that's outrageous, man. And then he's got like the guy that he's partnered with, you know, he's got a big like a hundred dollar bill on his wall behind him, and like what, like all right, this is this is a little bit two on the nose here, dude. - Yeah. - He's kind of the one that creeps me out a little bit - Yeah, and then you get like a subscription to something when you buy the kids' clubs and it's just a, there's like, that's where I'm at. - Maybe you can take all, you can take a lot of it away, I do agree with that, but it's not black and white, and that's where it's all, I'm like, on the, you know, feeling like you're apologizing. I'm like, man, I think the good guys are all like pretty good guys, you know, and I think that, I think they're a net positive to golf. I don't think that they're, again, I don't think they're trying to make some statement, I think they just fucked up. If this was the straw that broke the camel's back on like a group of people that I thought had questionable morals and were in it for like totally wrong reasons, I could see, like when I saw that video, did you guys, when you saw it, did you think they were gonna lose their biggest sponsors, get pulled out of stores, no longer sponsor of PJ Torrevin and like lose the big break? 'Cause I feel like I've seen 50 pieces of golf content that have made me think, all right, that's the end for them. Like they won't recover from that and they'd always do. And this one didn't fit that bill for me. And that's where I'm just, but you're more to it. - More to it, they're probably almost certainly has to be, if you ask me, because I've been in my own head about this whole thing this whole week as well, of just like I did not see this sequence. Even as of last Sunday when we were recording, did not see it cascading this way over this past week. - But I think it's also, it comes down to like, if you know, regardless of which way you choose to, if you choose to own it, if you choose to apologize it away, you choose to push back and say no, like this is why we did this. Whichever strategy you choose, I feel like it was almost the worst of all worlds, what they did where like they deleted it on, because I remember Senator Arslack and I was like, "Did you guys see this ad, this is insane." And then like, then that J Don takes, you know, clipped it and like pulled it back up and you know, and then like they deleted it and then there was nothing until what, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, until like Monday, you know, yeah, it was over the weekend and then and then but like they just kept kicking the can down the road seemingly too with like the first apology was like, oh dude like that ain't it? Like that's had some real whiffs of like we've been informed this is against our values sort of sort of thing, which is tough. So yeah, it's kind of a fascinating and then and then like the crazy part too is then then calories starts getting dragged by, you know, all the the anti cancel culture. Yeah, now it becomes like this culture war talk of war and it's like, man, good goods at the middle of I don't think they think anything about anything like they're they're the we're going to just like project everything on to those guys like, God, what a nightmare. There's there's something to like just marketing in general, right? If if you don't, if you're Callaway, if you're golf dogs here, if you're whatever, if you don't want your brand next to another brand anymore, like we've seen it when athletes run into something and they don't, you know, you know, the, you know, the morals don't align or the image doesn't align anymore, and you want out, you get out, like you just don't, you don't have, it doesn't have to be like this, you know, this specific thing is unrecoverable from just like if we don't want to be associated with you anymore, we're out. And we're going to, we're going to pull the cord and do that right now, but I am, I don't, I think you to your point, you see on Callaway need to wear this more like I don't see the ground they're standing on and it's awkward to talk about because they're a former partner of ours and we had a great experience with them and a lot of people that we worked with there no longer work there anymore, but you approve the video and then you drop them for it feels just those two things work against each other and it feels like if you ask me like, where's good good like six months from now. I think like they're not as low as they are right now. I mean, they posted a video this week and a lot of people were watching it, a lot of people commenting negative things towards Callaway, and I think they're going to rally their audience against the people that have kind of bailed on them in some way right or wrong for that. It's a little bit, you know, and I guess I'm, I'm just, I am surprised that the ties were cut so hard and not and not so quickly that's the, it was a waterfall like slow leak. We're almost every day. Yeah, and then it was just like, who's staying? I don't know. It just awkward to talk about to be honest because it's just the whole thing bums me out creeps me out, weirds me out, and I don't know. I don't think this is the end of good good. It could be wrong on that, but I also know how this world works. That's where younger than me as well. So that's what makes me awkward and I feel like I'm a much older than them, but I'm not too old to not see the value and like they're pretty inspiring to a lot of young people that want to play golf. They, people tune to YouTube and see them having fun playing golf and it probably inspires people to play golf. I think that's overall a good thing for the world of golf. I, to her swing was jumping off the screen of me. I had done two screen experience going. I had the sound on the tour championships. I wasn't following it super closely. BMW is like, it's one of three playoff events, and it's a great playoff event, but we're not doing it at the other ones, kind of have, it just felt a little arbitrary. Yes, I feel like it's such a hardcore golf fan sort of product anyways that it's not, I just don't think you're gonna have, I don't know, maybe you'll have social moments and little pull outs and snippets that you can, you know, hook people with, but the actual YouTube video itself is gonna be for pretty, pretty hardcore fans, I think, so you could price scale it back. Like they're trying to hold it to a commercial partner, whatever, but I think another thing from this week was just the amount of hype videos coming out, God, I've had one, Bridgeman had one. It was just very so hyped hip-hop culture focused with, you know, very fun juxtaposition with Bridgeman and then, and then, and then like cuts to the cuts to the practice, you know, like the practice chip in green and he's, he's just hitting the random bunker shots out of the practice bunker. It did get me hyped, though. That's so high. That's awesome. I'm happy for you. These, these touch of weird nerve in me, I don't, I don't, yeah, I do, I love the Minwoolie one because I feel like that's like we're, we're pushing Minwoolie's brand. Friday night, they did the first live immersive game, the baseball game, they did the Yankees Red Sox and it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm putting this, I'm, I'm getting to the point where I'm putting this on the list of like, I want to see an Apple immersive event at a PGA tour stop at the players, something like that, an immersive camera at 17 at TPC Sawgrass. I legitimately would describe watching it and for those who don't know, like it's a, it's a 3D experience, like where I had said, and like you are, I would describe it. Do you want us to put up the photo of you for, no, no, I can put it back on. What do you want me to? No pressure. I'll put it on if you want me to right now. I would literally describe it as being closer, you're closer to being at the game than you are watching it on television, like that's, that's what it was like. It was so fucking cool. And I think it got, it had to be very expensive to put on, but golf, golf is the ultimate sport of like where people, people want to be at the golf course, like when you're home, you want to be like experiencing that and having that feeling. Not easy. Yeah. Not, maybe not easy, but like I want to see an immersive experience of these, like I want to see an immersive event on the PJ tour. I think that would be, maybe Augusta is more realistic option for that, like they can afford to do that and money's not an issue, but it's, it's, it was shocking, like extremely shockingly cool. I even made my wife, I was like, I was short of the replay, and like you got to see this. I mean, you could see the outline of the sunflower seeds that are spit on the on deck circle. It was so freaking cool. So you need to watch what you're showing your wife on those vision pros, you can get yourself into trouble there. As I've seen, I'm surprised you still have those things because I haven't heard anything about it in like two years, but I will say it's been waiting for them for this moment. Any sphere, basically, I know there's one in Vegas and we have one, or excuse me, one in L.A. and one here in Dallas, and they had the players championship there a couple of years ago. But I think the issue that they have is that there's so many damn cameras that you need for a golf tournament in order to make something like that happen. It would be like one or two holes.
