It's when our listeners share our show on social media. Just go to WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and spread the good word about our podcast. It's easy and it helps us so much. The Knute House from the United States, for example, brought us a review on Apple Podcasts. Thank you. Last time, Paul completely messed up texting with the girl he likes. But he got a message from Melee. Let's see what happens today. We will learn how to express eating preferences and decide on different options and prices. We'll also cover the regular verbs, "Vollen, Heisen" and "Möchten" as well as the modal particle "Doch" and how to use it. Hello Paul. Hi Anna, hi Melee. Together eating is a great idea. Thank you for the Nachricht, Melee. You say thank you? I say thank you. Thank you for the heat. I take care of the food. Help? Ah, Anna's office. That was no problem. Did you get hungry? Oh, yeah. What do you want to eat? Here there is pizza, delicious. I want to eat Hamburg. Or the Döner. Hamburg and Döner don't eat it. But there are fish. We eat fish. Hmm, or is there a pizza? Okay, how expensive is the pizza? What? 19,99? That's expensive. A Nachricht von Fritz. He also comes. Has he already bought the big one? The big one? I don't know. We can ask Fritz the same thing. Here! A snack costs only €9.50. That's not expensive. Okay, then we eat snack. Now I'm really hungry. And now let's repeat the part of the conversation. Please speak after me. Hello, Paul. Hello, Paul. Hi, Anna. Hi, Melee. Hi, Anna. Hi, Melee. Suzanne Essen is a super-idee. Eating together is a great idea. Danke für die Nachricht, Melee. Thanks for the message, Melee. Du sagst, Danke? Ich sage Danke. You say thanks? I say thank you. Danke für die Hilfe. Ich bezale das Essen. Thanks for the help. I pay for the food. The meaning is, the food is on me. Hilfe? Ach, Anna's bureau suchen. Help? Ah, looking for Anna's office. Das war doch kein Problem. That was not a problem, though. Habt ihr Hunger? Are you hungry? Oh, yeah. Oh, yes. Was wollt ihr essen? Hier gibt es Pizza, Lacker. There is pizza here, yummy. Ich möchte lieber Hamburger essen. I'd rather eat hamburgers. Oder Döner. Or Dönerkebab. Hamburger und Döner gibt es nicht. There are no hamburgers and Dönerkebabs. Aber es gibt Fisch. But there is Fisch. Essen via Fisch? Are we eating Fisch? The meaning is, shall we eat Fisch? Hmm, oder lieber Pizza? Or rather Pizza? This is short for, or would you rather have Pizza? Okay, Vittoya ist die Pizza? This is what we say word for word. And the meaning is, how much is it? Was 19 Euro, 99? Das ist aber teuer, was that is expensive? Eine Nachricht von Fritz? A message from Fritz? Er kommt auch gleich. "He is also coming soon." Hat er die Großkaufthiebes schon? Does he already have the Großkaufthieves? Die Großkaufthiebe, das weiß ich nicht. The Großkaufthieves. I don't know that. Wir können Fritz gleich fragen. We can ask Fritz zuhn. Hier ein Schnitzel kostet nur 9 Euro 50. Hier ein Kattlet kostet nur 9 Euro 50. Das ist nicht teuer. Okay, dann essen wir Schnitzel. Okay, then we eat blood. The meaning is, then let's eat Kattlet. Jetzt bin ich wirklich hungrig. Did you know that many podcast apps just take Apple's reviews and algorithm for their own app? They didn't write there own stuff so they just take it from Apple and that means if we German stories do well on Apple podcasts then we will do well on almost all podcast apps and that's why we are stressing to please write us a review on Apple podcasts. That is very important to us and you can help us out a lot thank you very much because well nobody cares about these other apps and their other reviews. So if you enjoy our content please go to the link I put for you in the show notes or if that link doesn't work just open the Apple podcast app and then you go on the search field and type German stories. After you've found us go down to ratings and reviews and then tap on write a review and show us how well we can already write a German review of a German podcast. Thank you very much. Got it? Then you're awesome! We highly recommend you to go back to the beginning and listen again to Anna Mealy and Paul deciding on what to eat for dinner. Let's look at today's little piece of grammar. First we cover the irregular verbs heißen wollen and möchten. We already know some verb forms but others are new. Let's start with the regular rule again. Ich has the ending "e" like ich komme. "Do" has the ending "st" like "do" comes. "Ear" has the ending "t" "air" comes. "wir" has the ending "ön" like "wir" come "ön". "Ear" has the ending "t" again like "ir" comes. "Again" and finally "ze" has again the ending "ön" like "kommen". So that's the regular rule and now for the first irregular verb heißen to be called. Ich heiße. "Do" heißt. This one is irregular and I'll explain it soon. "Ear" has the "heist". "Wir" heißen. "Ear" heißen. "Z" heißen. So we had one irregular form here and that's because verbs that end in "sen" like "se" and "sen" like "sets" "en" "sen" like "x" "en" and "sen" like "z" "en" for example "ssen" "heisen" "putsen" etc. They all merge the "s" of the ending in the "do" form. Normally verbs with "do" and on "st" but here only the ending "t" is applied. Therefore "do" heißt "hei" "setset" "t" doesn't have an "s" between the "setset" and the "t". The next irregular verb on our list for today is "vollen" "want". So "vollen" itself is a new form for us but it's regular. Ich will. We know this form already and it's irregular. "Do" willst. This one is new for us and it's irregular because it's not "vollst". "Ear" the "s" will. Also irregular but not new for us. "Wir" "vollen" "ear" "volt" this one's also new for us and then "z" "vollen" again. So "vollen" is a modal verb. We've already learned that modal verbs most likely have another verb in the same sentence and that they show possibility, ability, intent, obligation or necessity. This verb sounds a bit more demanding than the next verb which is more polite. "Möchten" would like so the form "möchten" itself is new for us but it's regular. Ich möchte. "Do möchtest" "Ear" "s" "möchten" so this is irregular and it's new for us. It's irregular because it's not "Ear" "s" "möchten" and then we have "wie möchten" "wie möchtet" and "wie möchten". "Möchten" would like is not on the list of German modal verbs but it behaves like one. The reason why you sometimes find it in quotation marks is because it's actually a special form of the verb "möchten" to like from last lesson. It also has an additional "e" just like the verb "arbiten". Now let's go over to the modal particle "dach" and its uses and meanings. Modal particles are a specialty in German. They are short words that give more information to a sentence. Usually about feelings. Their meaning is very abstract so it's impossible to translate them into English without sounding weird but we want to help you understand what Germans say word for word and we don't shy away from saying weird English sentences so we'll translate them for you anyway. The modal particle "dach" means "zo" or "on the contrary". It expresses surprise or opposition. We use it when the context is "no" but we want to say "yes it is". Here's an example from last lesson. Paul said "Ich bin Paul" and Laura said "Das weiß ich doch". I know that though. So Paul's context is "she may not know my name" so I should introduce myself. Laura's context is "you think I can't even read your name in your Finder profile?" On the contrary I do know your name. You can also combine "dach" with "nicht" or "kain" to express the opposite. In that case you are surprised or opposed because the context is "yes" but you want to say "no" it isn't. In today's dialogue Melee said "danken für die Hilfe" "Ich bezahle das Essen". Thanks for the help. I pay for the food. And then Paul said "hilfe" "ach anaspirot suchen". Help? Ah looking for Anna's office. That was not a problem though. Melee's context "you helped me" and therefore I should show my gratitude. The food is on me. Paul's context "you think you owe me something" but that was not a problem at all. I just showed you where Anna's office is. And let's be honest, he probably would have been late for work even without helping Melee. We hope you understood what happened in today's part of the story. In any case let me summarize it for you. Anna and Melee meet Paul in town. Melee had asked him in her message if he wants to eat together. That's why she wanted Paul's phone number from Anna earlier. She wants to thank him for the help and invites both of them for dinner. While they think about what to eat, a message from Fritz arrives. He'll be there soon too. Has he caught the ghost of these yet? We will soon find out. Thank you so much for listening.
