Sarah Matthews Reveals What Trump’s DOJ Tried to Erase

The discussion centers on the erosion of transparency and public trust under the Trump administration, particularly regarding the January 6 Capitol attack. The Department of Justice has removed over 1,000 files related to the events, prompting Home of the Brave to archive and publicly release them as a countermeasure to historical revisionism. Sarah Matthews, a former White House official, emphasizes that these deletions mirror authoritarian tactics to manipulate public memory. She links Trump’s disastrous economic policies—like tariffs and the Iran war—to rising living costs, blaming them directly on Trump’s leadership. Voter dissatisfaction is especially high among young men and Latino communities, who feel misled by Trump’s campaign promises on affordability and peace. The administration’s growing wealth, including lucrative Pentagon contracts for Trump family members, fuels accusations of self-enrichment and corruption. Public campaigns, such as billboards in key states, aim to educate voters on these issues. The conversation concludes that the erosion of trust is not just a political issue but a moral one, with many voters now seeing Trump’s actions as a betrayal of their economic and personal interests. This shift in perception, driven by transparency and accountability, is seen as a growing challenge to Trump’s political future, especially in the upcoming midterm elections.

Hey, guys, it's Sarah Matthews here with The Bullwork, and I joined Nicole Wallace on Friday, where we discussed a bunch of different topics. First, we talked about how the DOJ has scrumped its website of files related to the January 6 convictions. More than 1,000 files have been erased, and this is just another example of the Trump administration acting like an authoritarian regime and trying to rewrite history. We also talked about the upcoming midterm elections, and how corruption is actually the number one issue, according to multiple polls, four voters, as they head to the polls this November. And how the Trump administration is going to have to try to explain that to voters, because many voters who voted for Trump in the 2024 election, he's now hemorrhaging support from, particularly when it comes to young men who feel like they've been bamboozled and feel like this administration promised them one thing and has done the exact opposite. We talked about everything from the Epstein files to Trump's war of choice with the Ron, and his disastrous tariffs, how that has all just raised costs for everyone, and Trump has instead inflated his net worth while most people are struggling. Here's more of our conversation. I'm always thinking about how to balance a busy social life with being present, for my family, and everything else I have going on, even if my family maybe doesn't want me present. I like products that fit easily into my routine and pre-op, all is simple to work into a night app. Make pre-op all your first drink of the night, drink responsibly, and enjoy your next day activities. Well, Donald Trump is putting out into the open just how much he thought through his plan to overturn our free and fair elections. There is a brand new effort to remind all Americans what happened last time. Donald Trump tried to undermine free and fair elections in a very democracy. When he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, before the Department of Justice scrubbed its website of various news releases and court filings concerning the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the group home of the brave downloaded them and saved them. Now they have launched what they call the January 6 memory project. It is an online database where they have published all of the archived material that Donald Trump doesn't want you to see and that he directed DOJ to remove from sight. I want to bring in Sarah Matthews. She's the spokesperson for Home of the Brave. She was a former deputy White House press secretary during Donald Trump's first term. Michael and Eugene are still here. I mean, this is to me the first step of what should be a monument to Harry Dunn and Michael Fanon and Officer Hodges and the men and women who protect the Republican and Democratic lawmakers who were attacked that day by Donald Trump supporters. Yeah, exactly. January 6 is one of the darkest days in our history, but the only light that I see is the actions that those officers and their fellow colleagues took that day to protect our capital and keep our capital safe. And the members of Congress who want to whitewash the events of that day should feel immense shame for it. And so should this Trump administration. But that's why we at Home of the Brave decided to capture and archive these files because I got to give a shout out to my colleague Tom Jocelyn. I work with him at Home of the Brave. And he was one of the authors of the January 6 committee report. He predicted that this is what would happen if Donald Trump took office again. That DOJ would scrub these files. And so he went ahead and archived them all ahead of time. And we're talking thousands of files that have now been deleted. And we've put them on the Jan 6 Memory Project dot org website in order for the public to go view these files. And that way that this administration can't try to erase or whitewash the events of that day. And that is exactly what authoritarian regimes do. They want to rewrite history in order to control us. And we're not allowing this administration to get away with it because we need this as a stark reminder to all Americans of what Donald Trump did in the last election when he lost. And what could happen moving forward? Say if Republicans lose control of the House and the Senate. I have no doubt that he and his team are already scheming up plans to maybe I don't know if we would go as far as what we saw with an insurrection on January 6th. But I believe that they are going to take very severe actions to try to cast out on the results of the midterm elections. And so we just want to keep shining a spotlight on the events of January 6th to not let them get away with their attempts to rewrite history. Rebecca Sarah and Angela Sarah these are the billboards at home of the brave has up they're fantastic. For a lot of voters it's the compilation and the cumulative for some voters especially those who sort of swung dramatically to Trump especially after giving Biden a chance. It is it is these issues. It is the price of groceries, the price of gas, the price of everything. Yeah exactly and that is why at home of the brave we're trying to remind folks that there is one person who is to blame for the higher grocery prices that they're experiencing or the higher costs of gas and diesel. And that is Donald J Trump because it is a result of his disastrous policies whether that be him launching his war of choice with Iran or him imposing these asinine tariffs. They're all self-inflicted wounds and so that's why we're spending a million dollars across three states. We're putting up billboards in Iowa, Michigan and Ohio to remind folks that he is the one to blame for the economic hardship. And it's no surprise to me that we're seeing him hemorrhage support among young men among Latino voters because he's broken nearly every campaign promise. He was a guy that said that he would be the peace president. He was the guy that said that he would lower costs on day one. He was the guy that said he was going to release that scene files. I mean the list goes on but the thing is that me and other folks who worked in the first Trump administration, we were warning folks that in the lead up to the 2024 election that Trump's second term was not going to be about improving the lives of everyday average Americans. It was solely going to be focused on himself. And we're seeing that in his self-dealing and the corruption that's happening and how he has inflated his net worth by billions and so have the Trump sons. They have gotten all of these lucrative Pentagon government contracts for businesses that they had no part in before their father took office again. And so I think that that is finally penetrating through with people and resonating that while they're struggling, they see all of this corruption taking place and they feel frustrated and bamboozled by Trump. And I think that that's going to spell trouble for Republicans in the midterm elections who have enabled this administration. You know, it's interesting. I mean a lot of the lies and the brazenness are particularly repelling two young men. It is incredibly masculating not to be able to pick up a tab. It is a terrible tension in any family for the parents to have to say no to things put in a cart by kids or by a partner. And then to be played for a chump, to be played for a fool, to vote for him while he just makes, as you said Sarah, his kids in himself rich. This feels like potentially durable damage. And to Angela's point, I'm not sure they all become, you know, car carrying members of the Democratic Party, but he could turn some young men off to the Republican Party for a long time. Exactly. I think that young men were part of the reason that Donald Trump was propelled back into the presidency. And they feel like they've been bamboozled. And it makes them feel like fools because they believe Trump when he said that he was going to focus on things that they cared about, like lowering housing costs or grocery costs. And I'm saying that he wouldn't launch another war in the Middle East, but he obviously has failed on all of those fronts. And then when we watch the manosphere, too, you're seeing folks like Joe Rogan go out there and say, oh my gosh, I can't believe this happened. And they act like they're shocked. And I just want to laugh. I'm like, you got to be kidding me. This was all 100% predictable. If you believe that Trump actually cares about everyday average Americans and their struggles, now this was going to obviously be a second term solely focused on himself. And I do think that people are starting to finally turn on him and the tide is shifting because they feel like enough is enough. And when they listen to this administration and Trump try to blame the problems that people are facing on Joe Biden, give me a break. They've been in power for nearly two years. And there is no one to blame other than Trump and his enablers. Angela and Sarah, thank you so much for joining us today.
