Sasha Baron Cohen shares a dynamic and insightful interview that blends personal anecdotes, comedic storytelling, and deep reflections on satire and reality. He demonstrates his remarkable skill in capturing a fly using a method rooted in empathy and observation, highlighting his attention to detail and creative problem-solving. The conversation expands into his journey in comedy, from creating the character Borat during a live teen TV show to developing the Ali G film, which features real people in surreal, satirical scenarios. He discusses the process of character development through real-world interactions, emphasizing authenticity and improvisation. A key theme is how satire can expose societal flaws, particularly in the realm of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and the manipulation of public perception by technology and foreign interests. Sasha shares a personal story of swimming daily in Australia, where he overcame fear of sharks through routine and mental resilience. He also recounts an intense undercover moment involving a conspiracy theorist, which nearly led to exposure and raised real security concerns. Throughout, he underscores the power of comedy as a tool for truth, connection, and human insight, showing both his humor and vulnerability. The interview stands as a celebration of creativity, courage, and the enduring impact of satire in a complex world.
- Oh, there's a fly?
- It's a pesky fly.
- Can you not do that?
- That's fine, that's fine.
By the way, I can catch the fly.
- Okay, I'm sorry, go.
- If the fly lands, I will catch it.
I'm serious.
If you tell me where the fly has landed, I will catch it.
- How do you do it?
- I'll show you.
- The fly is. - Where is it?
- No one move, no one move.
- As descended upon the Red Bull can.
- Okay, okay, okay, here we go.
This is where you need your camera.
Are you ready?
- Yep. - Is it chilly here?
- It's pretty chilly, right?
- It's quite chilly, yeah.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Do you not like it?
I could change the temperature.
- No, no, no, you like it cold here.
- Whatever you need, I do.
- No, no, no, I like it.
Look at this, it's so colorful.
- Well, it is quite chilly.
- What'd you say?
- No, it's chilly, I like it.
- It's chilly in here, you like it chilly.
Well, comedy thrives in chill.
- Wow.
- You don't think?
- What happened?
- What?
I just heard the volume of his voice.
- A lot of-
- Now, wait a minute.
What do I drink?
Okay, Coca-Cola.
- Yeah, what do you like?
- Red Bull.
- Red Bull I won't have, Coca-Cola I won't have.
- You won't have that?
- What's that, water?
Smart water I can have.
- You like sparkling water, no?
- Yeah, I like.
How do you know that?
- I can just tell, dude, by your face.
Your angler.
- Have we started, is this?
- It doesn't matter.
- Is this it?
- Yeah, yeah.
- It's already happening.
- You know what, you have a swimmer-
- You need more cameras.
- Sasha.
- It's like seven-
- You have a swimmer's body.
- You do, and as a swimmer-
- Yeah, she's a swimmer.
- Really?
- You have a swimmer's body, yeah.
- Are you a swimmer?
You know what, I started swimming a lot
when I was in Australia.
That's why I'm every day in the sea.
- In the ocean?
- In the ocean.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Every night.
- You call it a sea.
- We call it-
- Is that European?
- What do you call it?
- An ocean?
- An ocean, yes, the sea, yeah.
The ocean.
So I'm every day in the sea.
I had a friend of mine.
We had, we would swim, have we started?
- Yeah, yeah, this is how it starts.
- This is it.
This is very casual.
You don't even wear headphones.
- He is.
- You don't wear headphones.
- No, I don't.
- No, no.
- So basically, I mean, so you just talk,
and you just take photos.
I could think you'd go to paparazzi land,
even though you're right next to me.
Why would you-
- I'm on lens.
- Those are-
- It's a massive-
- I'm on a massive lens.
You're six feet away from me.
- What do you want?
- Will you riot on me?
- Are you the CIA?
What are you doing?
- Look at my pores.
Is it demonic?
- You have no pores.
- I thank you very much.
- You look great.
- Really?
- Yeah, yeah, you look really good.
- You're looking gorgeous as well.
- So how about-
- Hang on, so, oh, sorry, go ahead.
- Can I give him an intro?
- Yeah, sorry, sorry.
- Can I give him a fucking intro?
- I'm so sorry.
- Intro, mate.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah, so-
- I don't want to be, I don't want to be,
get too sentimental, but I could tell you a story,
if I may.
- Please do.
- To introduce you.
I was on MADtv, and I was living in this tiny apartment
in Silver Lake, and I got the flu, and I turned on HBO.
This is way back in the day.
And I just didn't know about your show, Ali G,
but it was on, and I remember being super sick
and cackling so hard, and just being so obsessed.
And ever since then, I've just been a huge fan of yours, man.
- Thank you, likewise.
Well, you came in on Bruno.
- Tell me how I, tell me how I came in.
So he has a movie, right?
Great movie, Bruno, right?
I auditioned for it.
- Yeah.
- Right, I remember, and I remember,
what do I do to make this different?
So I was playing your boyfriend.
- Yeah, you were auditioning to be my lover.
- Your lover, right?
- By the way, you had a pretty crazy sex scene
if you would've got the bar.
- I know!
Oh, dude, I fucking missed out!
It would've been a dream of mine.
- There's a terrible story, which I could tell.
But tell us the audition story.
And then I'll tell a story, theoretically,
which you may cut out later on.
- I don't know if you remember, but I ran.
- I remember you coming in.
- I came in and I had a testicle out.
- What?
- Yeah.
- That was on the--
- I had these jean shorts.
- Wasn't that a requirement from the casting director?
Like, you won this, you have one nut out.
- Yeah, so I had short shorts like this.
- By the way, most guys had two nuts out, but okay.
- And they put it off the side and it walked in.
And it was a great magical, you know what I mean?
- Yeah.
You had us at scrotum.
- Yeah, yeah.
But--
- Proper intro, Bobby.
- Oh, let me finish.
- Okay, sorry, bye-bye.
- The intro, yeah, yeah.
- Oh, we're still in the intro?
- Yeah, we're still in the intro.
- It's a very loose format, this.
Wait a minute, why--
- They're eating sushi in the corner.
- Why are you--
Did you bring us sushi?
- You can have some.
- They're actually gonna eat.
All right, okay.
- California roll?
- No, we're not, we're not.
- Okay.
- You can eat.
- Okay.
- So, how about a round of applause?
Bruno, Ali G, Orat, Tallahegga Nights.
- Oh, Tallahegga.
- Tallahegga.
- It's the Korean way.
- It's the French, it's a French way of saying it.
- Yeah, Tallahegga Nights.
What's it fucking called then?
- Tallahegga.
- Who, oh, I missed a fucking pronoun.
- A pronoun?
- I missed a letter.
Anyway, let's move on.
Sacha Baron Cohen!
- Thank you very much.
- I'm not professional.
- You're not professional, man.
I don't know what I'm doing, you know?
- That much is clear.
- Yeah, so, Sacha, you're English?
- Yes.
- Yes, what Premier League club do you support?
- So, I am probably the only English person
you'll ever meet who doesn't support a Premier Club.
- Boom.
- I grew up into basketball.
- Oh.
- Yeah, and my dad was Welsh,
and we grew up into rugby as well.
- Whoa.
- Do you even know what that is?
- Yeah.
- I didn't mean to be rude.
- Sacha. - No, no, no.
- You didn't know rugby was a thing.
- No, no, it's a footy, a footy player.
- Oh, really, who?
- Yeah, in Australia.
- Australian rules football?
Australian rules football?
- Yeah.
- Oh, wow, so they're crazy.
- Yeah. - Yeah.
- They're wild.
- Why did you have to go so weird?
- No, because when I was dating you--
- No, he gave me, he told me about your dating history.
- Yeah. - Good.
- Yeah, so, but what club was hot in your neighborhood
where you grew up?
What kind of support?
- They support, all the Jews supported Tottenham.
- Oh!
- And Tottenham were known as the yids.
Now, for people out there who don't know,
yids is like the N word for Jews, and so--
- Wait, wait, wait, yid is?
- Yid.
- Yeah, same.
- Yid is the--
- Am I in trouble by even saying it?
- No, not really, it's cool to hate Jews at the moment.
- Okay.
- It's completely in, it's back in, retro.
We're living the fun, it's fun in the back end,
and it's cool to hate the Jews.
- So yeah, you can say, I mean, technically you can't.
- Because look at this.
- And you're a gooner.
- I'm a gooner.
- Okay, so I am sort of a gooner.
- Well, you can't just do that.
- So, what do you mean?
- All of a sudden you're--
- So anyway, so basically I was,
at my first ever football match,
I saw Tottenham play against Chelsea.
- Oh.
- And my mate got me tickets in Chelsea.
Chelsea hated Tottenham.
- Yeah.
- And I was sitting there with my girlfriend at the time,
who was Jewish, and they start chanting,
yee-do, like there's 40,000 people chanting,
yee-do, and I'm obviously Jewish,
trying to hide the fact that I'm Jewish, you know, miming.
- Yee-do.
- And then my girlfriend--
- Oh, you just yelled that out loud?
- Yeah, of course, that's how they would chant
against the Tottenham.
- Yee-do.
- Yee-do.
And then basically my girlfriend shouted, "Shut up!"
And all of these terrifying people in Chelsea,
they had at the time, they had the Chelsea Supporters Club
that were kind of, you know, football hooligans.
And they stopped and they turned to me.
And I was like, and I just pointed at her.
- Wait, were you known then or no?
- No, no, no, no.
- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, young guy.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Wow, dude.
- Wait, but you go swimming now, in the ocean?
- So I went swimming, in the pandemic, we moved to Australia,
and I had an old mate who was like,
an old mate of mine from Scotland.
And the first morning, he turned up at seven in the morning,
he goes, "Big man, we're going swimming."
And we went swimming in the ocean every day.
And there were like 10 people who went swimming every day.
- Yeah.
- And I remember at one point, one of them,
I think, died at one point.
It was the beginning of the pandemic.
We were like, "What?"
Well, I don't know if it was connected with the vaccines,
and I'm pro-vaccine.
But I think one of them had an allergic reaction to one
of the vaccines.
- No!
- And basically drowned.
- He had a myocarditis.
- It was a shitty sexist, yeah.
- It is funny how he drowned,
but it's like, probably the vaccine, though.
- No, you're right.
He basically drowned.
But we swam every day.
It was like, I became the king off the,
there were about 12 people who'd swim
at seven in the morning, every day.
And we decided to get a thermometer, a bath thermometer,
and you was kind of respected if you had a thermometer.
You were like-
- You just had one on you?
- Yeah.
- We bought it.
- Oh, you bought it?
- People were like, "Oh yeah, it's like 11 degrees here."
And we go, "Actually, it's 12 and a half."
- Oh, wow.
- And so we had a lot of stages.
- Wow.
How long have you been in the water for?
- Eventually, I mean, I started swimming in Perth.
I'd swim for an hour.
- Oh, damn.
- And there you swim, 'cause the surfers swim.
And so you swim, the safest place to swim
is behind the surf.
- Behind, but through a channel?
- Not through a channel.
- Well, you don't want to swim through the surf.
I guess you could- - Yeah, yeah.
- Behind the surf.
So, you know, the beginning of the waves,
you swim behind that, and then you go,
and then you come back.
But what we would do is we'd go up
to like the oldest swimmer on the beach
and just go, you know, "Where are the rips?"
- What's a rip?
What's a rip?
- A rip is a bit that pulls you out to sea.
So you're suddenly swimming in, ah, you know.
Out there, yeah.
It's not a current?
Not a current.
Yeah, it's a hot.
So basically, it's the theory of water comes in with waves.
The water has to go out.
Yes.
And you don't know where it is.
So we'd go up to the oldest person.
Wow, wow, wow, wow.
And they know.
Yeah, and then suddenly.
Are you scared of Super El Nino?
No.
So you swim in here?
You're not going to address it?
Yeah, I actually.
You swim in the sea here?
I spearfish, and I freak out.
She's a spear.
Oh, my goodness.
And I was a competitive swimmer my whole life.
Wow.
But California water.
Which strokes, if I may ask?
I am a 200 butterflyer.
Wow, so you're very strong.
She's very strong, yeah.
I've got big laps.
Wow.
We dated for 10 years.
You two?
Yeah.
And we broke up.
10 years.
Are you still dating now?
No.
What happened?
Why did you break up?
Oh, you're turning the tide.
I love the turn of tide.
But you're in the same room.
This is a great break up.
Oh, yeah, I love him.
I love her, too.
Why didn't it work out?
Porn.
Porn.
Porn.
Porn.
You became a porn star.
You started. I started an only fan.
Started an only fan, yeah.
Anal penetration.
Only anal.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Can I say anal?
I think so.
Okay, sorry.
If you mispronounce it, anal.
And so, porn led. I was watching too much.
You were 10 years together.
10 years.
Yeah.
Wow, amazing.
And then what happens is you get in a cycle.
Why don't you look at me?
Oh, my.
I just assumed that she finished.
I'm right, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, obviously.
Are you done?
I never said anything.
Are you done with the relationship?
No, the relationship's done.
And what happened was we broke up.
Yeah.
And then she met somebody else.
Wow.
And he's cool with you just hanging in the room with him now?
Yeah.
I'm friends with him.
Yeah, he's friends with him.
I'm friends with all my girlfriends.
Fantastic.
Yeah.
So, it's like, you know, it was difficult when her baby was born.
Yeah.
But then I met him.
Yeah.
And what a joy.
What a joy.
What a beautiful joy.
Yeah, lovely.
Congratulations.
Full of light, beagles.
I love it.
Wow.
But, yeah, you know.
What's so funny?
Why are you laughing?
I don't want to move on.
I love it.
Yeah, Sasha wants to know, dude.
No, I'm interested in it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Wow, congratulations.
Thank you.
For moving on.
Not for the baby, just for.
But do you ever.
Not being with Bobby anymore.
Great achievement, you escaped.
Do you ever dive?
Bobby's very charming.
Do you dive?
Do you free dive?
Do you ever dive?
I do dive, not free diving, yeah.
Scuba?
Scuba, yeah.
I used to.
So you do.
I mean, Western Australia, we're still on the.
I don't know why.
Swimming thing.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay, Western Australia.
So basically there's a lot of sharks in the water.
Yeah, very sharks.
Because I went there.
I don't know how long we're going to talk about this, but no one.
It's gorgeous.
It's amazing beaches and no one is swimming.
Wow.
And I go, why is no one swimming?
And they go, well, listen, Mike, you know, 10 years ago, somebody got bit by a shark and
they brought him.
He came out on a Cuttersley Beach and the guy bled to death in front of the whole, whole
of Perth.
And basically everyone was traumatized.
Yeah.
And no one went swimming.
And I thought, I've got to swim.
And I spoke to the fisherman.
There's like local guys fishing.
I go, what are you fishing for?
I'm fishing for shark, mate.
I've got a tiger.
I caught a tiger last week.
Oh my God.
Oh my God.
And so I thought, I thought to myself, I go, I'm going to swim every day.
Because what's the likelihood of getting gobbled up by a shark?
If there hasn't been a single shark attack for five years.
So I knew there were loads of sharks swimming around me, but I thought it's a good mental
process.
So counter anxiety to swim, knowing there are sharks around you.
And then you just, you just kind of repeat the probability in your mind.
I mean, you must do this.
You know, you must.
Well, one time when we were dating, she's like, let's swim with the sharks.
We did that.
And we had to take a class.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
You can't lock eyes.
You can't wait.
You have to lock eyes.
Oh, fuck.
Yeah.
It's the higher.
I've been locking eyes.
And you can't swim underneath them.
You got to stay above them.
Okay.
Yeah.
Anyway, the moment I left Perth.
Yeah.
One week after, a guy went out swimming.
His goggles came back.
He got eaten.
Oh my God.
Almost to the day of the five years.
Yeah.
Wow.
What is that like?
Getting eaten by.
It wasn't.
Bobby.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tell me about it.
It wasn't me.
I know.
That was somebody else.
I understand that.
But what would that be?
I'm still alive.
I'm still alive.
What would you do?
Well, I actually.
I was going to say.
I'll put you on the side.
Well, I also thought this.
I also thought, unless you're religious and you believe in an afterlife, I go, what's
the worst that can happen?
You have like the last 30 seconds of your life are awful.
But then you can't remember it.
You have a great life.
You've been swimming.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And the last 30 seconds, which you can't remember unless you believe in heaven.
Yeah.
Do you believe in heaven?
I don't think so.
Yeah, me either.
Yeah, you think I'd do my job if I believed in heaven.
You think you'd be interviewing me if I believed in heaven?
Yeah.
My God, that paparazzi thing is so unnerving.
And he's quite intimidating.
Yeah, yeah.
Will you stop that paparazzi bullshit?
No, you can do it.
I mean, I don't know what you're actually doing.
Yeah, yeah.
This is insane.
All right.
No, it's mad.
You've never done this with another guest.
That lens is so long, it's actually almost touching my nose.
Yeah.
Sasha, he's never done this before.
Yeah, exactly.
All right.
Relax, dude.
Yeah.
All right.
Yeah, he's a star.
Okay, good.
You know.

So when you – I have a question.
When you're doing a character like Bruno or Bora, any of these characters, do you Meisner
it?
I mean, are you that guy two weeks before shooting or do you just –
Go into it.
So do you mean is it Meisner?
Is it method acting?
What I'm saying is, are you Bora like weeks before you're shooting?
Oh, you don't do that.
No.
Yeah.
So, I mean, it became – out of necessity, I started, like, for example, changing my
underwear.
So each character has their own underwear.
No.
I go to work, I take off my underwear, and I put on the character's underwear.
Why?
Because early on – I mean, these things happen.
These things are iterative.
So I did Bora at Gay Pride.
This was the beginning of Bora.
And somebody said, you know, take your trousers off.
I took them off, and I was going, my, you sash is underpants.
And they went, listen, mate, you don't – why are they still Australian?
And they go, you're not real.
And so I got busted.
So after that, I always wore underwear.
On that same Gay Pride thing, it was the beginning of – there was a very large – I think
I'm trying to work out the correct –
So wearing a dress, you know, but clearly was a man.
This was, you know, 1995.
And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, you're a beautiful, sexy woman.
But, you know, about 260 pounds, pure muscle.
Wow.
6'6".
And then finally, he was like, you know, you want to come and have sex?
And I was like, yeah, whoa, whoa, whoa, sex at the beginning of Bora.
And I had a camera with me.
Yeah.
And he brings me into the toilet, into a cubicle, and I'm waiting for the camera to
follow me into the cubicle.
And he shoves the cubicle.
And I'm suddenly with a guy who is three times the strength of me.
And he's pulling down my – yeah, my clothes.
And I realized this has backfired.
Yeah, obviously.
And this is going to end badly.
Yeah, yeah.
And it was at that point, I remembered a physics lesson, age 30.
I learned about leverage.
And I realized if I pulled the end of the door and used my leg, I could open the door.
So I opened the door.
Use your feet.
And out I went.
And me and him didn't end up being married.
Have you ever had a moment like that where you're like, wait, stop.
This is all – it's a joke.
Like, I'm just joking.
Like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Do you ever drop it?
Like, scared?
I've never dropped it.
I mean, and I don't know why.
So –
I'm banned.
I was banned from the MGM Grand, all of them, for many, many years.
- Really, for what?
For coming in with one testament?
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Um, no, I showed my ass crack stage. Wow. It's his closer. It's my closer
Yeah
Well, they had specifically asked him not to show that crack and he said I will not be showing my ass crack and he
Showed the ass. Yeah, because you're in the moment. It's a pack
It's hard it's hard
Like you know what the green thing with a Borat the green the green thong thong right? Yeah
It's so hard not to put that on right? Yeah. Yeah. Well, I don't know about that
But sometimes you get carried away
Being on stage we had that in that movie Bruno. So oh
So real quick, please. Did you sell those?
We didn't know we didn't they started reproducing them afterwards
So much money. I know so much money. It was ridiculous. By the way, the tailor actually had to make a measure my
Genitalia to make that perfect. Can I be honest with you based on this? I'm not gay. Yeah, you know, I mean but Wow
Thank you. No, I'm being real just based on this. Ooh la la muy muy bueno
Yeah, which was grosses to you my friend. Yeah, look at that thing. Thank you. I'm very hairy this design like who's like
Oh, this is what we we?
We had a man right designer called Jason Alper and there was also we saw a photo
Somebody with a similar thing on
They're actually quite comfy. Yeah. Yeah, so comfy. I gotta get a pair. Yeah, and
Wow, maybe wax your body. Well, not for that
Bruno Bruno had no hair other than a landing. That's right. That's right. I would be in production meetings and it was one guy's
Job to actually shave me every day. Wow, because I tried waxing and I got a reaction and then I got I took
Some antibiotics cuz they're like I got Canada
So I got a vaginal yeast
Well
So I go where what part of the body no way it said, you know on the on the packet of the antibiotics
I had it was for vaginal yeast infections because I got Canada. So I was so rundown
I was so I lost so much weight and I have this thing and the antibiotics I got Canada. You can have an overgrowth anywhere
Yeah
Sometimes my penis smells I know
No, so I didn't want to mention it because I didn't want to go
I'll do a quick sniff. Yeah, yeah, I mean how
You want to know my system what you have a yeah, I'm doing it what you're kind of ultra bendy
Ultra bendy me you can you're very flexible. No smoke. No, I do with a thumb. Yeah. Why because I want to smell it. Why?
Because I sometimes it smells funky
So what? Yeah, because my girlfriend's coming over
This is very different from the last interview
Yeah
This is where I thought it a little more slick people are
Uncomfortable, I'm sorry
you putting your hand and touching your
I'm not gonna touch you again. Actually. I'm not gonna use that term
Yeah, so yeah, sometimes it smells but let's move. I don't know why I just revealed that. Um, well, it's clean now. We're all good
Um, okay. Correct. Yeah, you have beautiful all of skin. Thank you very much. I appreciate I really do
But I've always thought that really yeah, you never mentioned it before
Because you know when we see each other it's brief. Wait, wait, you're right. Well, we're in the dictator together as well
We were in the dictator together. Thank you so much for that job. I was gonna get into that
Um, yeah, can I just be says it was that?
Okay, I don't know if you know that know this though, but I was struggling back then. No, I did not know that. Oh, yeah
Oh, yeah. She was there with me. I had nothing going on. Really? Yeah, I couldn't get an audition
I couldn't and I did that table read for you. Yeah, and you gave me
Thank you so much. And um
That really was
Just a milestone for me. You were absolutely hilarious. Oh, thank you. So no, you're absolutely
Thank you, but that was really cool because I you know, I just that one
Day coming in and seeing this is a what what are you doing? It's a fly. Oh, there's a fly
It's a pesky. That's fine. That's fine. I will wait. I can catch the flight. I'm sorry if the fly land
You tell me where the fly has landed. I'll show you okay. All right if it lands, but don't just tell me where it is
Don't approach
Do not warn it that I'm gonna catch it, but I will catch this fly, but that was stomach, but that I was stunning
I will show you if
I was stunned. I do with chopsticks. Really? Oh, yeah, I could like that
I will catch you don't use chopsticks. I do but yeah, are you?
Are you good at that? I am actually yeah, you could you seem like you're good. Yeah. Thank you
Is that all a lot of compliments? All right dictator dictator. Yeah dictator. Oh good. Oh anyway, um that first day of work
I was so nervous
Really?
You were here layer. I know
Bruno audition. You're absolutely. Thank you so much
And I walked in to the the makeup trailer and it was Sasha Ed Norton Ben Kingsley
Oh my Anna Faris. I mean just down the line
Right, and I couldn't fucking talk
That's how nervous I was. Oh, really? Yeah, but then once I got us because I love Larry. Oh, yeah, Larry Charles is great
you know, and so it's like once I got inside it was fine, but um,
Yeah, it was a really good. I hate giving compliments, but you know
I hate giving compliments, but you know, you've done a lot
But you were absolutely
Thank you, all right
No, you were hilarious
I was hilarious, all right, thank you
First of all, you were hilarious in that, and the Bruno audition
I don't need it
I still remember
Thank you, absolutely hilarious
Thank you for bringing that up, but anyway
Thank you for bringing that up, but anyway
Thank you for bringing that up, but anyway
Is that where you guys first met was Bruno?
Yeah
Right, okay
That was the first time I met him, yeah, yeah, and I was
You missed the crazy sex scene, though, so you're probably pretty lucky
I know
Did you guys laugh?
We had the pedal-powered fucking machine
Oh, my God, do you know how committed I would be?
I would actually have that enter my body
Yeah
Sorry to interrupt, but the fly is
Where is it?
No one move, no one move
It's descended upon the red bull can
Okay
Wait, shh
Okay, here we go
This is where you need your camera
Are you ready?
Yeah
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
What the fuck?
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Oh, my God
Here's the fly, it's still alive
What?
What the fuck?
It's still alive
What the fuck, dude?
What in the world?
What the hell?
Oh, my God
Put it in the Pringles can
Put it in the Pringles can, man
Oh, my God
Wow, dude
I think it flew out
Oh, my God
It flew away
Oh, no, it's there
No, it's there
No, there's a second one
Oh, the second one
What?
Oh, yeah, it's still there, it's still there
Oh
Very nice
Dude, what?
Okay, seriously
Oh, no, it's there
- Oh!
- Very nice.
- Dude, what?
- Okay, seriously.
- That was amazing.
- There we go.
Swimming with sharks.
- You got that on film?
- Go watch Ali G.
That was the first thing.
- Go watch Ali G.
- Go and see Ali G.
Who is that?
- Ali G it, dude.
- Whoa.
- I told you, stunned.
- Is it the sound?
The sound does it or something?
Okay, yeah, you don't have to talk.
- No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, please teach us.
- This is my technique.
I understand that, but. Do you want me to teach you?
Yes, I really do need to know.
Okay, so flies are very intelligent.
Oh, my God
It didn't really seem like it there.
This is my theory.
It didn't seem to move.
You know, I'm very empathetic.
I can put myself in somebody else's position.
I like to put myself in the position of, in this case, the fly.
The fly, yeah.
So the fly sees, again, this is my perception, my opinion.
The fly sees a hand coming down.
It sees the hand.
It goes, fuck, and flies away.
As one does.
It doesn't fly, it doesn't stay there.
The fly is not an idiot.
Let's not belittle the fly.
We're not belittling it.
I like the fly fleas.
The fly fleas.
It flies away.
It's called a fly.
Why would we expect the fly to stay there?
So what I do is, if the fly is here, right?
You can use your, here we go.
If the fly is here, what I would do is I have my hand here and here.
And then they start moving together.
I basically would do that.
The fly sees this one coming towards it.
It flees that way.
Then it sees that one, flees that way, and then it catches.
If you get the right amount of power, you can actually just stun it.
Sasha, can you put your hands apart like that again?
Okay, so the fly is here.
Why can't he go this way?
He's underneath.
He's not that intelligent.
Oh, I see.
We don't know.
East-west is the only thing he knows.
It's my opinion, but it's predictable.
Yeah, yeah.
Wow, that was, you know, we've never had a guest on this program.
Capture fly.
Not just capture fly, exhibit enormous amounts of pure talent and skill.
Thank you very much.
I do different voices, so stay in character a long time.
Sasha has all of beautiful skin.
He's empathetic, right?
And he can capture fucking flies, dude.
Swim with sharks.
You swim with sharks as well, dude.
What's this?
People say this is another popular method, but I think Sasha's
is more efficient.
This is like the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
That seems ridiculous.
That's how many you've said it is?
Yeah, that seems a great way to break.
You're catapulting, like, what is going on here?
You have an erection.
You hold somebody's erection.
You slam something in the direction.
Oh, okay, that's a finger.
Okay, sorry.
That seems absurd.
It seems. Oh, you know, it creates speed as well.
But that's not as fast as. No, I don't think the speed is. I think they are fast.
Let me just see right here.
Okay, well. Pretty fast.
We can try that.
That was pretty fast.
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, that hurt.
Wiki How is. Anyway, anybody who wants to catch a fly,
you use Sasha Baron Cohen's techie.
See the movie, Allie G Who Is I.
No, so let's talk about the movie.
Okay, sure.
Do you want to?
Yeah, I'd love to.
You haven't seen it, though.
We forgot to send you. Here's the thing.
You guys forgot to send me,
but I've seen everything.
We are on it.
MGM, Amazon are on it.
MGM and Amazon are on it.
They just forgot to send it.
I'm going to watch it tonight.
So here's the deal, okay?
Allie G, one of my favorite characters that you do.
What was. I mean, I don't want to give away the plot line,
but can you give me a sense of what it's about?
Or no?
I would say it is. It's the craziest film I've ever done.
Really?
It is the craziest film. It is set in the real world with real people.
Wow.
And there are things in it,
scenes in it that you have never seen before
that you will never see again.
It's basically my version of the Avengers.
Whoa.
So I play three characters in it.
Yeah.
I play. I did a show called Who is America?
Uh-huh.
Mm-hmm.
And I did this ultra-woke character
called Dr. Naira Kane and Degu Cielo.
So funny.
It's like this NPR t-shirt wearing. Guy who. He's a stay-at-home male mom
and empathy doula.
And I play this other character in it
who's this sort of Krav Maga Israeli. Claims he was in the Mossad,
but is actually a complete bullshitter
who hangs out with ultra-right-wing people.
That's you, dude?
That's me.
It's so funny.
Oh, my God.
That's fucking funny, dude.
And so. Can you give me a little taste
of what that character sounds like or no?
My name is. I've been in 14 terrorist attacks
and I have started three.
Wow, dude.
Yeah, so he is. What a great character.
But yeah, you should check him out.
There's some good stuff with him
and Dick Haney,
also known as Dick Haney.
What was your favorite war and why?
There's no actors in this.
These are just regular people.
No, these are real people, yeah.
Yeah.
Does it ever go wrong?
Yeah, I mean, does it ever. Like, you're in an interview,
you go, there's no way we can use this.
Yeah, I mean, sometimes I'll come in
and I just go, the dynamic is wrong or. Yeah.
If I feel they're at all suspicious,
I'd stop it, so. What do you mean suspicious?
Well, if they think something's up.
Oh, I see, yeah.
Hold on, is this real?
Is it their mind?
Is there ever a time where you know they're suspicious
and you think they're going to carry on anyways?
Well, they will carry. You know, I don't want that.
I don't want everyone ever playing along.
Yeah.
So the whole thing,
it has to be. Right.
They don't know what's going on.
What's going on.
It's hard to believe
that people don't know it's you, though.
How do you bail last minute?
It's like,
Ali's just one of those famous characters in the world.
How the fuck. So what we have is we have, like,
a really big research team
who are calling people up.
We did scenes in England.
Now, in England,
the character became so popular
that the mother of the queen of England,
the queen mother, was a fan.
And apparently. Wow, wow, wow.
According to the grandchildren,
William and Harry,
who are now grown men.
At Christmas lunch,
she, you know,
the queen said,
how was lunch?
And she goes,
Booyakasha.
So that's how popular
Ali G became in England.
Wow.
And so we have a scene with the doctor
and we had to interview about 5,000 doctors
until we found one
who didn't know who Ali G was.
Wow.
But here it was, you know,
we never released the Ali G movie,
so it was easier,
but it's still, you know,
it is a very time-consuming period.
I bet it is.
Yeah, man.
The research that you must do.
Wow.
So, yeah, so it is kind of like
the Avengers.
It's an action movie,
but with real people.
They don't realize they're in a
thriller action movie.
Wow.
You want to see the trailer or no?
Yeah, sure.
I'll just let it play
because I don't want to get flied on YouTube.
Oh, you want to be flied?
I see the character.
Wow, dude.
Who's that?
Ross, is that Ali?
This is like, oh, yeah.
How many people not know that's you, though?
How many people not know that's you?
That's his house.
Do you also,
is part of your crew, like,
security as well?
Oh, yes.
Yeah, yeah.
We have, you know,
when it's dangerous, yeah.
Yeah.
I cannot watch.
You promise you'll send it to me tonight?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I cannot wait to fucking watch this thing.
I cannot believe that we didn't send it to you before,
but anyway.
Wow.
Yeah.
And it's shot mainly in. That's Minchuli.
That's Ali's girlfriend.
Wow.
By the way,
he doesn't have dreads under there.
He's got, like, plastic bags
in the roster hat.
He's just tasting,
Did you audition her?
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, but she's brilliant.
Yeah, she's. Morgana is unbelievable.
Wow.
She's a very famous English comedian.
Wow.
Wow, wow, wow, wow.
So, Amazon,
it's already out or no?
When does it come out?
So, it's coming out.
It's in the cinemas.
We're doing just two days in the cinemas
and then going straight to Amazon.
So, next weekend,
23rd and 24th.
What?
What?
Yeah, what is that?
I can't wait.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, as I said,
it turns into an action film.
There are. What is that?
These are. These are Mossad butt guns.
These are. These are guns
that fire their, like,
anti-sexual violence.
Wow.
What was the stage on?
Is that Coachella?
What is that?
Yeah, that is at a. That's at a Deadmau5 concert.
Oh, Deadmau5 concert.
Ali G ends up
with a Deadmau5 thing on his head.
Wow.
In front of 70,000 people.
Yeah.
Wow.
So, it's a lot of him
in the world of TikTok.
That's a very. That's a very famous general
who's wearing. Doing an ASMR video.
Talking about the danger of Iran.
Yeah.
What, does he suck it?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Wow.
Amazing.
Amazing.
So funny.
You know, Sasha,
do you see changes
in the business?
I mean, it is different, right?
How are you adjusting
to all that?
Well, you know,
my speciality was making movies
for cinemas.
So, I mean, obviously,
we did the Ali G show
that was to be watched at home.
But we would. I got really crazily detailed
about making sure
that the laughter
in a 300-seater cinema
was perfect.
So, Borat 1,
if you watch it at home now,
there'll be long gaps.
You know, it's a bit like. If you look at
an original Marx Brothers movie,
there'll sometimes be
like a three-second gap
between where nothing's going.
So, we were. So, I was just. We would record the laughter
every single time
and we would cut the movie
to within a frame,
really within a couple of frames
to make sure that the laughter
was riding like a stand-up gig.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
So, it's cut for a 300-person scene.
Wow, wow.
Because that scene
where they had that race
with the. Remember the Jewish. Yeah, the running of the Jew.
The Jew.
And then the laying the egg.
Yes, yes.
And the egg cracking
and then the kids eating it.
Yeah.
My brother and I
watched that in the theater.
We were on the ground
collapsed.
I'm a pure stand-up, dude.
Yeah.
And, you know,
I think why stand-ups love you
is because you're just pure comedy.
Thank you.
I mean, listen.
You have the skill set
and we understand it
and your game, dude,
it's just been always elite
and we love it.
Thank you, man.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We see you. That's why when I see you
with Jeff Ross,
all these people. Oh, I love you.
Yeah, you're a part of that.
You know what I mean?
No, I love it.
Well, I think it's not worse.
We want laughs.
Dude, look at this thing.
That's crazy.
The Jew head.
The Jew head.
Yeah.
Wait, is Drewski in this one?
Drewski?
No, no, no.
But I just went and did a thing.
Oh, you did a thing
with Drewski, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's brilliant.
He's brilliant, yeah.
Wow, dude.
Brilliant.
There it goes.
What's your process
of developing a new character?
Because you've had
so many hit characters
that are so good.
Are you basing it
where you see someone online
or on TV
and you're like,
oh, I could do this.
This is. This is like a guy
who I emulate from?
It's. It varies the whole time.
So like Bullrat,
how did Bullrat happen?
Well,
I decided I wanted to do
a foreign character
who didn't know much
about England.
And I was doing a TV show
called F2F.
There were about 200 people
who would watch it every day.
Yeah.
It was like a kid. I was the host of it.
Crazy.
Great.
So it was like. It was a kid's show?
A teen discussion program.
What?
What?
No, it's crazy.
It was live every day.
What?
And I wanted to be a comedian.
Yeah.
And so what I decided to do was
in between segments,
I would like shoot little stuff
where I was playing
different characters.
Yeah.
And I did my first. Accidentally,
I created this genre
of a character in the real world.
It was not intentional at all.
Yeah.
So I wish I could say like,
oh, that's me.
Yeah.
Bloody hell.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Look how young I am.
So young.
So young.
So it's a teen show.
Yeah, yeah.
It's a teen show.
But. Wow.
Wow, dude.
Yes.
So. Oh, she then became quite famous.
And we would discuss stuff every day.
But. So Ali G was originally
this kind of upper class dude
called Jocelyn Judel Hume.
And he still had all the catchphrases
of Ali G.
So it's
Booyaka, Booyaka.
You know,
Rosberg.
But he was far more extreme.
He was an upper class version.
So I would go in this.
show and i would basically record these little bits an hour before the show an hour and a half
before with this director called mike toppin he was like this legendary editor who had worked on
the e-ling comedies there was a period of like the heyday of british movies and he was like the main
guy cutting all the comedies wow and he lost all his money with this thing called the lloyd's
insurance scandal oh no and it was terrible for him it was great for me i had this genius
on this crap teen discussion show yeah and we would go out he goes sasha let's go out
and we went out one day with this character jocelyn cheeto hume and i see these real skateboarders
who look like me yeah i've got a skateboard in my hand yeah and i say to mike you know and bear
in mind i've got a live show in an hour and a half i go i go should i go up to them and speak to them
and he goes yeah by the way he could have said no and i would not be sitting here today wow this is
the take away from this is careful there's a phrase in the music business carefully you let
on the bus right carefully you let on the tour bus this guy was on the tour bus and he changed my life
he said yes he could have said we're on air in an hour and a half come on let's shoot this thing
i go over to these skateboarders and i'm like i'm falling off my skateboard like yo man you're crap
look at that and after two minutes i look at my go i drop character i go hey i'm playing a character
what and i had this moment that changed my life i go they believe me wow so that genre didn't exist
you know in comedy yeah yeah yeah there were sort of prank shows in the 80s where they're
doing a lot you know somebody would wake up and they'd think they're on the ceiling and that
where they're doing awful pranks with people but it was a character in the real world and
i look at the director and i see this tourist bus open top double-decker bus turn up i look at him i
we locked eyes i run onto the bus the camera follows me i go upstairs i grab the mic from
the tour guide and i'm like i start beatboxing and rapping oh yeah check it out here i am mc
drossel and general hugh you know because wow we go across tower bridge we end up in a pub i start
break dancing they call the police i start walking towards the bridge there's a massive corporation
there i go in claiming my dad's upstairs they get security to throw me out and we run back
to the channel it's called london weekend television i change into the clothes go on there
you know i'm talking with those teenagers i go we used to say cut to vt in a videotape
a pre-existing and this guy is editing these are the days of pneumatic you know you are
pressing buttons and rewinding and you know we show the first thing and the kids are like wow
that's crazy and then you know i do another little segment with the kids cut to the second bit
it's on again it's going great you know they love it wow and then i cut the third bit there's
nothing there
the end of the show the one hour live shows i get a message that the head of the channel
wants to see me i go into his office he said you do that again and you're fired oh damn and i was
like i got something yeah he wants to find me i got something so the next week the next week
the next thing i go i think i want to do a foreign character and i drive down to the east end i wonder
if you can find this and this is i had my mom's saab 900 it was actually it was a car that had a
problem it didn't turn left there was a fault where the steering wheel didn't turn left and
it's as he'd be driving and you'd be trying to get the steering wheel to turn anyway i i uh i you
know i i'm going on a detour so anyway we're in the east end you know and i thought i want to do
something about you know i'm going to do something about you know i'm going to do something about you
and i don't know what the character is i open the boot and inside i'm rummaging around the trunk of
the car and i find a hat that i bought on this trip to russia when i was 21 and i stick it on
my head and i go
and i that was the character wow that was how it came and i came up to a guy
i'm looking for a cockney you're a chap
where are your spoons and then the
we played it out it went really well i went the next day and there was a fox hunting rally
and i go again i'm going to take this character again he i did i called him a lexi crickler that
was the name of my roommate i had a roommate called alex crickler i'm a lexi crickler and i
was going up to these real upper class guys who were you know defending fox hunting we want the
right to be able to chase chase and kill a fox with hounds and and i said in my country we hunt
animals you think we should do it here and they were like oh yeah so that would be a good idea
that would be you know and at the time prince charles who's now the king had there was some
scandal where he'd been recorded talking about camilla being uh a actually forget that he's now
the king and he's actually all right when did you change the name to borat so every channel we were
we we gave him a different name oh yeah this is this is the fox hunting rally wow that's a no no no
wait a minute no no no that that is from no that's the allergy show that's earlier on yeah but that
is the countryside protest yeah that is already on the allergy show we bring in borat in the uk
allergy show and i think this was one of the first ones this is a common rally this is like
everywhere online yeah the fox hunting rally yeah very english protest wow yeah yeah yeah so there
was a version of this actually i tried it fine and that was the creation of borat basically so
sometimes they are very quick and then we did a show who is america where we decided okay
you know i became too well known with bruno and the dictator we go we're going to use prosthetics
now and the technology and prosthetics had just got to be good enough but we thought maybe they
could be good enough to convince real people and so we decided to do a 10-week process me and a
dance timer and we go what we're going to do is every week on the first day we're going to come
up with a character and write it work how they dress create the prosthetics and on the sunday
we're going to shoot with real people wow and we're going to either dump the character or keep
it so for 10 weeks we did 10 different characters oh wow and it was it was really interesting because
what i realized was on the sunday my guys would say you lock in what we
mean by locking in was you create a character and wait wait wait those are all you these are all me
are you out of your mind yeah so they are okay the top wait who's the red tell me about her okay
he's like omg with boy oh omg with boy omg he's an unboxing character
and basically he would have we would go to dc yeah and he would unbox with uh you know politicians
that in the middle is rick sherman rick thurman was a um he has just come out of jail yeah for
murder and he basically he becomes like one week he's getting his first michelin star as a chef
yeah and we had all this you know it's prison-based food and we end up actually feeding
one restaurant critic we go this is you know i've been a
night in prison and i cut up my room roommate the cellmate and i ended up you know tasting it
and it was actually delicious yeah and uh you know we're trying to replicate that feel off the
you know human flesh and they basically i pull out what he believes is human flesh wow okay this is
a chinese dissident he's he's grass-fed the completely vegan diet yeah yeah kept in solitary
very fatty it's delicious and we get this restaurant critic eats this dissident oh and
you know the food is kind of delicious and i go you know this was chum fai could you please you
know his parents record a message to his parents and he's like you know chum fai thank you so much
chum fai was absolutely delicious look at him this guy is believing the prosthetics work look
at that thing dude that's a real human is that you too
that's a real human oh my god i've never seen human buttocks oh here we go cake
with grated new zealand human excrement and a vanilla
so i go yeah i included in it i go what can you taste and he goes i'm not sure am i tasting
oregano i go it's shit shit is such a it's such a strong has such a strong flavor yeah
such a strong flavor
when you're using human shit that you must be what the fuck what did it taste like though
i think they were delicious we actually yeah gordon ramsay helped us like
what's what's i love gordon ramsay yeah what's he like he's well he's a brilliant
shit i mean he's yeah yeah he lent us his team to that's amazing dude
he's trying to work out what the secret ingredient is dude he looks like schmeagol
right
anyway
yeah probably good credit yeah so he like did this character he did like
You know, he became a DJ one week.
He became an artist.
Wow.
It was all about that, you know, in the art world,
they love the idea of somebody who's come from a disadvantaged
or dangerous background.
Right, right, right, right.
Oh.
You were in jail for murder?
Oh, how exciting.
And then that guy bottom left is Billy Wayne Ruddock.
He's like a conspiracy theorist.
There he is.
Bernie Sanders.
It's Bernie.
Does Bernie know that it's you or no?
No.
So Bernie, look at his face.
Bernie afterwards was, we got, you know, the interview went well.
And at the end, one of his team was suspicious.
And we get a phone call saying, we think that's Sacha Baron Cohen.
Oh, wow.
Our team denied it.
And then they said, if you don't give us back the tape.
And again, this is from hearsay, from the person who,
who was on our team.
They said, we're going to go to Congress and say that there is
potentially a terrorist in town.
What?
And so I was living in an Airbnb in D.C., you know,
only sneaking out at nights.
You know, I was living in D.C. for two weeks.
Wow.
And.
You wouldn't go out to restaurants or anything?
No, no, no, you can't.
I was going out in the middle of the night.
Wow.
Yeah, because no one could see me for two weeks.
Otherwise, we'd be busted.
Which doesn't help.
It's not a secret terrorism case either.
Yeah.
A secret safe house.
Again, I'm saying allegedly.
Yeah, allegedly.
I was told.
But he didn't get the tape back.
Yeah, how does that work?
How do you say no?
Just no?
You're not giving it back?
I think, no, we didn't, the team did not admit that it was me.
Wow.
I think, you know, we're consulted with, yes, it aired.
Wow.
It aired.
He looks so weird.
He's a conspiracy theorist.
You know, this was 2018 and we thought, you know, he's like,
Dr. Billy Wayne.
You know, so he's, I think, yeah, everything, everything.
I like the new truth, Brary.
Yeah, so it's like, you know, and the new movie is all about
conspiracy theories as well, where they, where they lead to.
And we get some conspiracy theorists and we do probably the
craziest thing that's ever been done in cinema before.
Wow.
I'm glad you're addressing it, too, because it's fucking insane
out there.
It is insane.
You know, we're in a world where you can't tell the difference
between truth and lies.
And the people benefiting from it are a handful of people,
the people who run social media.
Now you've got AI where it's purporting to be the truth,
but it's also sucking up information from Reddit and Wikipedia
that's got a lot of lies in it as well.
Wikipedia itself, they recently showed that it's being manipulated
by foreign governments who want to change certain pages.
Well, we have a big AI scene in it, actually, because,
and hopefully it would lead to a change in the law.
But you've got to see it.
But it's, we've got a lot of famous people in this AI video
who Ali G is claiming actually come out.
He gets cancelled at one point and lists all these people, too.
Oh, wow, wow, wow.
Some of them are dead.
So everyone listening right now, you know, I'll be honest with you,
dude, thank you so much for doing this.
No, it's been great.
Firstly, I've had a number of compliments.
We've talked about swimming.
I managed to stun a fly without really hurting it.
And you have it in there.
That was amazing.
My gift to you.
My gift to you.
I got to hang with you again.
By the way, I always loved hanging with you.
Oh, thanks, man.
Always loved.
I never knew you were going through a difficult time.
That time, yeah.
Everyone I remember from that first, we were like,
he is absolutely hilarious.
I'm killing it now.
No, absolutely not.
We couldn't believe it.
You know, and that's how we brought you back to the Dictator.
Thank you.
I know you did, man.
And that was fucking amazing, dude.
Yeah, thank you.
By the way, you were lucky not to do the Bruno film.
It was terrifying.
No, I would have.
Poor guy who got the job.
Poor guy had to deal with neo-Nazis and all this stuff.
It was terrifying.
Well, give Sasha a round of applause, everybody.
All right, thank you for having me on.
Fucking thank you.
