Now we're going to be chatting about rounders and NS Rounders had a pretty good turnout by all accounts for its first training session last week and the clubs hoping to build on that momentum. But one important piece missing, which is a permanent home, so to find out more about this search for a permanent base. I'm joined in studio by the co-organizer of NS Rounders, Kate Holland and Michael Sheen from Monster Rounders. Folks, a very good morning to both. Thanks for popping into studio. Kate, NS Rounders, tell us a bit more about you guys. How long you've been a going concern and the positivity from that first training session? Yeah, so it was last Wednesday, it was just our first session. It was an idea I had in the middle of the summer. So again, I've always loved playing and I decided I'd put it out in a certain form to see if there was interest from other people. The interest was huge. I was blown away by it, so on that I emailed Michael from Monster Rounders. I mean, just kind of underwent from there, trying to work away fine pitches. And then, yeah, did our first session last Wednesday and we had 24 people show up, which was great for our first goal. Everybody loved it. I think there was a lot of an older generation as well who would have played it at school and really, really enjoyed it. And it is such a social fun sport. So I think everybody really enjoyed last Wednesday. So we kind of want to keep going and while the momentum is there and trying to set this up properly as a proper club and find a permanent home for ourselves. It sounds like you were pleasantly surprised by the level of interest. I wonder if that to do with, you know, people, especially as the the evenings are getting dark or people are looking for things to do to stay active and so on. Maybe some people find the gym a bit of a chore. No offense to gyms. Whereas stuff like this are like paddle, these are games, you know, you can have fun. Exactly, you know, spend a bit of energy seriously. And that's it. A lot of people message, especially a lot of men actually message to say they're just wanted something to do in the evenings because you know, you're just kind of hanging around nothing to do. So yeah, it was great to see the turn out. And hopefully we can just build on that now. And I suppose from your perspective, Michael, the interest in rounders, it's one of those games, you know, I suppose there's a basis in terms of our connection with baseball. It's not a difficult game to get to grips with and to understand the rules. Very easy game. But you've played sport enough before and we've got great support from, I must say, GA because it's, it's GA rounders. So we play it. But we've got great, we've got great support and an easy game, especially if you've played sport before and you don't want to, you're not able to put up with the pushing and shoving and the tackling that's going around is so sociable. And you completed rounders from 16 years of age upwards. And that was not a parish rule because as you know, with GA clubs, there are parish rules. But rounders are unique that way. There are no parish rules. So you can come together and you can play. And as Kate said, we're in the, we're in the market now for a place to be able to train and play. But it was phenomenal the other night with six different communities represented from around East and South clear. So brought that out for us, Michael. Not just across Claire, but, you know, nationwide, to say rounders falls under the GA umbrella. Are there a lot of people playing us more than perhaps we might think? Oh, absolutely. And if anyone wants any information, GA rounders.ie is a website and it's excellent. We've over 70 clubs now playing rounders all over Ireland. But the absolute take up in women's rounders in the past two or three years has been phenomenal. We 28 women's teams in the journal competition this year alone right across the country. It was phenomenal. And I'm hoping to do it in a move those teams up to the intermediate and the senior grade, which would be the 18. But I started the memory with just one club four or five years ago. We now with, we know in monster. And that was in monster as well. We now would be feeling 12 clubs in monster for the new season. Okay, that's all a bit morphed into car temporary in our boards and Claire finally, uh, copy to the board, copy to the plate, so to speak. I like where your squeeze plate and there as well. The rest of them is actually a bit uh, softball. Yeah. With baseball, the pitch overhand in softball, you pitch underhand. So we could actually play international rounders with United States. It's going to be like in the international rules. It's changed the rules a lot, but it's it's really wonderful. The amount of people commented the game now. Okay, it's a bit brilliantly see that that really escaped because I came here two years ago to you and we didn't make much progress since but when Kate contacted HQ and they contacted me, she's been a wonderful driver of it in the inness in the generally clear area. And indeed, I think on the other occasion, usually you're reporting the call out there to kind of spark the interest. Um, okay, you know, obviously it must be great to see the growth and particularly as Michael says, uh, the interest from women, uh, but part of what you need, uh, which we touched on at the outset is somewhere to play on a more permanent basis. So, um, where, you know, where you're hopeful for anywhere, what do you need? You know, like obviously baseball, that's very much an outdoor game softball and rounders, it doesn't matter whether it's indoors outdoors. Well, outdoor really, uh, ideally, it's a, it's a big pitch. You'd want the size of a pitch. Um, and look, I suppose the dream would be to get somewhere with lights so that we can keep going during the winter because I don't want to lose the momentum now and say, oh, look, we'll be back next spring and then people will just kind of forget about it or move into other things exactly. So I suppose, yeah, ideally in the dream world, it'd be great to have, uh, G A pitch with floodlights. Not asking for much, but we'll, uh, we'll see, maybe today we'll, we'll work in our favor. Well, I suppose in fairness, if there, if there is anywhere that's going to have, uh, floodlights, chances are it'll be a G A pitch or we're not sure to G A pitch is in Clara and in Ireland. So tell us about your journey so far in terms of where you've been playing, if you've been, uh, training in multiple places or just one place at the moment to have, yeah, we only did the last one last week. And we, um, kindly, Ritchie in Lees Road has sorted the fair green for us at the moment, temporarily, but like that now, it doesn't have lights or for, we'll have to see how long we can continue. We'll only be the next couple of weeks, but, yeah, we have something secured at the moment, as I say, but it's just temporary. Okay. I, I, I was in clear sports partnership has been a wonderful encouragement to us and helped us all along the way. He even ran the initial course in sports partnership with his staff. There were, a few months ago. So he has been a great help to us as well. And you can play around us. I don't have a, uh, men mixed and women. So you can have three teams within your, within your club. I just wonder in terms, Michael, as you know, as Kate says that they're looking for, you know, perfectly a G A pitch would flood lights. The fact that rounders falls, falls under the G A remit, whether that will make things a bit easier in terms of, um, clubs being mindful of the call and, and helping out of possible. Yeah, we were hoping the clubs will, we'll see from that point of view and buy into it. After all, it was a great clearman, Michael Cusic who pushed round us into the constitution. And a great clear company here top is make rounder spats. So you're all, that is a good connection with clear. Uh, it's traditionally so hopefully we can, as Kate says, we can have a bit of positivity from some of the clear G A clubs. Okay. So because the majority of clubs around the country are all connected and locked into G A clubs in good way support. Okay. Well, hopefully something similar will happen for you guys, Kate. If people listening, clubs, uh, want to put their hand up and offer, um, their, their, their pitch, uh, how can they get in touch? Um, there's an NS Rounder's Facebook page, which I have to say just kind of proves the, the interest that's there. I mean, it went to 400 followers in the space of a couple of days, last post. There was nearly 5,000 views on it, which shocked me. So yeah, you can get in touch at the end of NS Rounder's Facebook page and, uh, yeah, we'd love to hear from anyone who has a solution for us. Okay. Well, uh, hopefully one of the pluses is well-born. You can also include, if you have rounders in your, in your, in your CV, you know, in your club, you can include that, if you're applying for sports, capital funding, it's the next advantage for you. Plus, I know on some of the clubs where people have come in and giant who'd given up sport and were from neighboring communities, they now become the Linchpin of the new club in terms of funds, raising and finance. So there is a big plus in getting all these people out there who are not at the moment about the club into your club and you might have won a one-up and the neighborhood club. Okay.
