Record Measles Cases, Dems’ First Primary State, LeBron James’ New Team and more

Hey, from CNN, I'm a FOMA DK, with the five things you need to know for Friday, July 24th. We start with the second record-breaking year of US measles cases. Just over halfway through 2026, the country has recorded more cases in any other year since 1991. CNN's Meg Tarell breaks it down. Meg, are we a long way from elimination status again? Hi, a FOMA will sum up the Caldex experts think we've already met the criteria to have lost measles elimination status. The US met that goal in the year 2000, and the way we lose it is to have at least a year of sustained measles transmission in the United States. And with an outbreak that started last summer in Utah, Arizona, it's possible we're there. Now we also faced a major outbreak in West Texas last year that killed two children, as well as an even bigger outbreak from October to April in South Carolina. Officials will meet in November to discuss the US's measles elimination status at a time when public health experts warned that declining vaccination rates could lead to a resurgence of other vaccine-preventable illnesses as well. Israel is preparing for a major military operation in the occupied West Bank after four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed. The Israeli military says a group of settlers entered an area of the West Bank, restricted to Israeli civilians for a quote, "unauthorized and uncordinated hike." As the group approached the Palestinian village of TEL, clashes broke out between the settlers and village residents. Despite video of the incidents showing an altercation that escalated and the Israeli military acknowledging that the killing of the Israelis was not planned in advance, the Israeli military is treating the event as a terror attack and have launched the operation to go after Palestinians involved in the incident. Settler attacks continued in nearby areas in the West Bank, including a town where settlers set homes, cars, and businesses on fire according to photos and videos obtained by CNN. South Carolina has been picked to hold the Democratic Party's first 2028 presidential primary. Nevada, South Carolina, knew Hampshire and Iowa were competing for the coveted first in the nation's spot for 2028. The State's party leaders and allies lobbied members of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws panel, as it considered which states it would allow to hold primaries before Super Tuesday. The center of the debate was a question over how to balance acknowledging black voters who are the party's most loyal members while also reaching out to Latino voters who drifted away from Democrats in 2024. Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, and Apple Wallet tell you that they do not hold funds. They merely facilitate a transaction. Your information is stored on your phone, not with them. Are we scheduled White House correspondence dinner is happening tonight? The last one in April was shut down after a gunman opened fire as he rushed through a secret service screening checkpoint on the floor above where the dinner was being held. The man hit an officer before several agents detained him. CNN's Brian Stoutzer has details. In terms of the way this is being set up, it's entirely different. The event that Washington, Hilton last April was a free for all. A lot of entrances and exits, relatively loose security. This time around, it's at a new hotel. There's one way in and one way out. There's room in the ballroom for only about 700 people. So about a third of the size of the event back in April. Many of President Trump's members of Inter Circle will not be there. The first lady not attending. The vice president not attending. But there will be many Trump cabinet members in the room. And I suspect they're going to enjoy this show, even if others don't. Take a look at what Caroline Loveitt said this morning. The president's speech saying the speech will be a combination of unifying, yet vicious, and serious, yet hilarious, all the same time. If you can imagine that one thing I can assure you, it will be entertaining. I am having a hard time imagining a speech that would be both unifying and vicious. We'll see what she means by that. The Braun James has landed on the Philadelphia 76ers as his next NBA team after moving on from the Los Angeles Lakers. CNN's Patrick Snell has more. Patrick, I thought for sure he'd pick between the Warriors or the Caps. Are you quite right or for the speculation had been rife? But the 76ers it is. And here's what else struck me. James even revealed he'd contemplate the retirement. Before making his choice, James taking to X to say, "I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide. But I was pretty sure I played my last game. I still truly love this game. And I have more to give." As you mentioned, the full-time NBA champion has signed a two-year $8 million contract with a player option. After according to his agency Clutch Sports Group, the Braun adding, "This is my last decision. I'm not going for money. I'm not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship."
