Randomness / The Draft Doctors

In this episode of the Draft Doctors podcast, host Steve Fizz shares a personal anecdote about attending his home league draft, detailing a stressful journey marked by car issues and a long drive, which left him exhausted. He then delves into his draft strategy, explaining his decision to prioritize players he likes, such as Wanganeen-Milera and Flanders, leading to a team with calculated risks but solid midfield coverage. The discussion expands to broader fantasy football themes, including the high injury risk for ruckmen this season and the potential value of overlooked "jag" players who might emerge due to team changes. Steve also responds to listener questions, offering insights on players he's fading or favoring, like Hayden Young as a riser, and touches on strategies for survivor drafts. Throughout, he emphasizes cautious interpretation of preseason performances while highlighting key resources like the draft kit for listeners.

Welcome to the Draft Doctors podcast. You're home of weekly draft content. Now here's Steve, Jonno, Gem and the Statesman. Good day everyone and welcome back to the Draft Doctors. I'm your host, Steve Fizz. Gonna have a little bit of a freestyle pod. There's nothing super set in this one. I've got some notes. So I was going to go through a few things. It's had my home league draft on the weekend, which we'll get to in a sec. It was not the best of days, also. I mean the team's fine, but it was a long day. I'm still recovering from it like five days later. Anyway, so if you haven't bought the draft kit yet, that is available now. The ranks are up day to last Friday. So obviously whatever happens this weekend, make your adjustments there. But it is a good way to support the show. It's the only financial thing. We've ever asked for, aside from that one time, no, we need to listen to donations. But anyway, aside from that, it's a good product and put a lot of work into it so you can get on the website through the socials on Twitter and Facebook and all that. So help us out there. Anyway. We had the draft. So my home leagues are super coach draft and I'd committed unfortunately a long time ago to attending this year's draft, which I live in Portland and that's in the draft was in Somerville. So I was a long drive. I hadn't been there for a few years. So I thought I'd better do the right thing, especially as commissioner these days. So got up, there's about 4.35 o'clock in the morning, smash my oats. So a lot of people are asking about the running still, which is nice. The running's going all right. I had a 10K on that Saturday morning. I've got doing a self-supported half in about a week and a half. So not this weekend, next weekend. Do the 10K with a bit of effort. So I was a little bit tired after that. Started out about six, something like that, 6.30. Just on laps of the little goon down here. And thought I'll get on the road by 9 o'clock, draft starts at 3. So I should be there between, should be there, you know, quarter past 2 to 30, something like that. So I'll see everyone, etc. Anyway. So I left at quarter past nine. A lot of road works on the way down. Also I was getting a coffee in warnables. So it was funny because I'm like, I hit this road works before Port Ferry. And I was like, man, I've got to get a coffee, but I've got to get it through the drive through it, hungry jacks. So this is like the only thing on the Melbourne bound side that serves coffee in a drive through. So I'm seeing the drive through way, way back my coffee, the high quality coffee that it is. And my car is just rattling like absolute shit. Fism of people people, the fism of people is struggling these days. So I'm like, well, that can't be good. So I'm pulling to the car park. There's no oil. No. Okay. Well, we better. So, you know, it's half an hour running around town trying to find oil. Get back on the road. Wasn't exactly the speediest trip. There was more road works. A few emergency services vehicles. Anyway, get to the draft half an hour. Like it was 330. Everyone's waiting for me. I sit down and just absolutely scattered as you do. I managed to pick up a couple of beers on the way. So just rip the top off them. No fish hooks in them. Get through the draft. And it was kind of funny because like, you know, often, I mean, I remember the drafts, you know, there'd be a bit of a kick on or, you know, you'd have a bite to eat. And everyone just kind of left and we were like, what? And I didn't have any way to stay. So I was sort of hoping someone was, you know, it was going to be a bit of a kick on it. I don't know if I could just fall asleep on a catch. So the draft end is about 7 o'clock. I'm just like, I guess I'm just drive home then. So drive home, which, you know, I got to gelong. It was pretty dark. Stopped at Red Roost to fish some food, which how is Red Roost that like not be getting in Calf's seat? Right? Like Calf's seat is genuinely terrible compared to the Root Up. Anyway, I had to pull over and pour ferry just for a sleep because I was like, man, I'm not going to, it's very clocked up. Work up, get in the door. So I was good, you know, just fucking long day. Anyway, the team, it's kind of funny because I'm so out, you know, super coach draft to talk about our full fantasy so much these days. So the team ended up, I got wang an in Miller in the first round. I went way so early on Flanders in Round 2 because it's kind of the funny thing. Like we draft on paper, everyone's got sheets. No one knows what ADP is. It's kind of just, you know, it's a fun draft because there's just so many curly ones. You know, you can mind value pretty quickly. I just went with the idea that I'm just going to draft dudes that I really like this year, which it was kind of interesting because I tend to draft pretty vanilla teams and there's lots of jokes about that. Usually sees you to a good position but doesn't always turn into the win as often as you'd like. So, did did go a bit risky through the mids, started off. So wang an in Miller and Flanders in the first two rounds, really to not go a mid or a rock in a super coach league in the first two rounds is pretty, I would say is pretty risky business. Setting yourself up for failure but it was kind of one of those ones. I was picked nine and all of, you know, my first year of rocks was gone. I'm like, well, Wayne in Miller is there. You know, he's going to be the top defender heading into the season obviously. I really wanted to square away a good forward. So it's kind of pigeon me into drafting a mid in that third round. And so if we do a bonsai draft, so the third round loops around the same as the second and then, you know, so I was going to be, you know, a long way from my fourth and fifth picks, I squared away Isaac Haney. And I think in the fourth round, I took, I was really keen on Blakey but I knew I needed a midfielder. So I drafted Blakey on the way up. I should have drafted in the clogged because he was still there but I didn't. I thought I'd get him on the way back and then he was obviously gone and Sarong was there, so that was fine. So I really did want Blakey this year and then yeah, I was acutely aware of what had happened in other leagues and other drafts where I didn't have enough midfielder's and there was about, there was still enough good midfielder's left before it went to absolute slop. So I managed to pick up cold well and hide young in the next two rounds. So I had four, you know, enough good midfielder's there. Obviously pretty risky but I think Haney Sarong, Wangadamilor, Flanners Blakey, probably pretty safe. So the risk in cold well and young, pretty fine. Rest of the team, you know, Jasper Fletcher, Trent Rivers, I did pick up Will Pow, which probably when he started to get that midfield time, it was really interesting to me. So I'm not sure which way they're going to go. I mean, as you fit the Fendi, probably going to send them to the way of a wire at some point anyway. My fifth midfielder is Darsie Parrish, ended up with Tom McConaughey in the rock. I just completely missed the rock runs. I think Darsie Cameron was the last one I sort of felt comfortable with and he went to pick next to me. So that's fine. I'm fine with decoding in the super coach setting and look, you're spooking a bit about it over the pre-season about this rock injury situation. We'll touch on it a little bit later. Maybe spending an early pick on it a rock. We know some of them are going to get through unscathed but it just feels like maybe there's going to be a few more injuries this year. The Ford line it up, Sean Manor, which I had no targeting on it just kind of fell that way. Jack Ross, who I'm probably higher on than most in the community, Phillipu, Dev Robertson, and Kiran Briggs in the flex. I think if you're going to take a late rock, you'd better take a second one and the bench is Jath Florent. Harvey Thomas, my boy. And Connor Butterrick. So it's a squad. Probably doesn't look good. The one thing I did notice about it is I've drafted a lot of team mates. I got Wangan and Miller a decoding flandist, Phillipu, Parish and Caldwell, young and so wrong. Rivers and Jath. What the hell are we doing here people? Certainly wasn't planned. I did notice it halfway through. This probably isn't great. I think Aenean Flaky can survive because they're so different. But anyway, that was a thing. There was certainly other players that would have liked and they just think it was like Frazier went, you know, I was probably expecting him to go a bit later. Conor McDonald, I was expecting him to go a little bit later. But then there's good players who slip through like Man is fine, right? I think anyone's ever excited to get him like Jasper Fletcher slid Trent Rivers. You know, I was expecting to end up with Josh Waitill as my fourth defender. We got some mad Keane Hall-thorn fans and he went, you know, like 10 rounds. I think that was, it's always funny that sort of thing. It's like we got the mad Hawks fans, we got a mad Tiger's fan, we got a mad Saints fan. I think the Saints fan drafted Max Hall. It must have been like clearly around the 9th round or something like that. I was like, what? I know he played or ripe. I mean, he could have got him in around 20 miles. Pretty sure about that. So, I was just, anyway, draft to do as you like. That's fine. So, yeah, on the rocks, it was, so yeah, the draft, anyway, yeah, I don't think I'll be making that trip again. That stuff is just an absolute nightmare. So the rocks, the pace yells. You know, this has been talked about a little bit over the preseason. Certainly on other podcasts, we touch on a little bit about the injury incidents. Does that mean that if you draft a rock early, you should build that into your overall risk profile? If you're drafting, you know, Max gone or whatever, does that mean you have to play safe around that or do you have to draft it back up? I'm really curious about what sort of strategy is going to win out here. Does it mean guys like Tilthorpe and Sam D'Arcy, do they get any rock time or are they just going to be moved on? The team's going to play that dedicated second rock. Now they've seen the Shannon Neal injury. It's going to be interesting how teams react to this, I think. Because whilst fantasy coaches apparently have a memory like an elephant, maybe a half of fantasy coaches, well, the actual coaches have forgotten what transpires. So we're just going to see a complete jag, second rocks. So it's going to be really interesting to see that Sam Drapers, lower extremities must be just trembling in their boots right now that cannot be good for that. So let's see what happens. But I'm curious to see what works out. Does it mean, do you do you is drafting a handcuff a better option? I sort of always think you want it like if you don't draft Jarred Whits, you should be the guy drafting Ned Moil. If you're drafting a handcuff, like get, you know, you always want to play for that ultimate upside. But maybe it makes sense in some deep leagues that you just at least get a playing rock because maybe teams are playing, are hanging on to extra rocks in case it's interesting. So the other thing I was thinking about is like these, the Jags. You know, we love a good Jag, he, it's sort of what we've been spitting about Melbourne and I know other podcasts and creators and social media accounts have been talking up guys like Trent Rivers. Obviously I've been talking about Jack and Carolyn Windsor and Harvey Langford at Melbourne because there's all this opportunity. But maybe it's a guy like Blake Howes, right? Like he came out, he's been streamable in the past, he's a young guy, he's been at the team, been in the system. And maybe, you know, we're seeing this raft of injuries that look to affect at least the early rounds at Adelaide. Maybe it's not, you know, obviously, Richelle is going to get some time in there, but maybe there's other players who are going to get a bump. You know, sometimes we look past the, I'm not saying we're shopping in the wrong area, but maybe we're just over complicating who it should be or looking for someone it should be. I remember when James Cissley had his ACL and we were looking at the likely candidates to get a bump and like the guys who were there already probably aren't the guys to get a bump and it was Blake Hardwick and I don't think I'd ever heard anyone talk about Blake Hardwick and he was very fantasy relevant all of a sudden. So, you know, don't discount the jags like they can obviously play. It's an interesting one there. Speaking of jags, or should I say, jaggers, eh? Jagger Smith. It's the quality writing that goes into this show. Obviously, the lighten it up is going to be interesting to see what his season looks like. Obviously, I'm personally always scared about guys coming off an ACL, but what can you say, smashing the Al Park? Is it preseason? Madness. Really interesting one there. I've obviously been pretty handy a lot of carton players over the time, so we'll see what happens there. But I do try to not let preseason sway me too much. I mean, it's nice. Personally having that draft in the bank because a car gets swayed too much on the preseason matches. Obviously, the injury is a risk. There's no defensive mechanisms being played by any of the teams. So watching, if an entire midfield's missing and seeing someone step in and score 100 is swaying you, I'd just be a little bit cautious on those sort of things. So I think is it that lucky jakes? No Bailey Dow. I know he's going to miss the first round or two, but when he plays, he's going to, he gobbles up plenty of pool down there. I mean, I guess that he's a salary capator, but it's caught some hate for not having him over ranks. But we'll see. It's an interesting one. I mean, on the other side, it's always nice to have a guy, your hot on, put out a little score. I think in one of the matches, Harvey Thomas scored a 90 according to Heft Stats who did a fantastic job, keeping them all damn and I was like, man, Harvey Thomas, my boy, 90, that's obviously going to continue. Yeah, I don't know. It's just something. I can't believe this Aiffel fantasy classic prize. Like, I'm definitely, I'm going to do a team reveal next week. That's going to be the part. It's a 200 K prize, holy shit. That's interesting. I'm sure SC would as well, but it's probably too busy bankrolling the ex-princindra's legal case or something like that. And then, even then, speaking of that whole thing, there's going to be a trump tower on the Gold Coast, right? How did we not go trump stadium for our sons? Right? Unbelievable. It's a thing. It's just interesting. You know, the season's upon. I'm ready. We're going to get into some questions here. Sorry, like, I know there's not much in this part. It's just, I hope it's a little bit of fun at the very least, asking some questions of ourselves. If you haven't done your draft and, you know, this is a great weekend to do it, what you're going to come away with. So, JT asks some slightest survivor strat discussion for next week besides, finally, some water drafters in your lobby. I don't know why anyone would want to survive a strat for many after last year's performance unless it was to do the opposites. Maybe we'll talk about some survivor. I am looking forward to that draft and try to do a little bit better this year's, a bit of a, I draft a tenor broom last year, people. What can you say? B.J., give us your biggest fader and biggest richer. So I mean, I've been pretty hot on Haney all year. I would say I've been consistent on that. Harvey Thomas, I mean, like, I'm not saying the draft you have earlier, it's your last pick. Like, go for it. I would say someone who moved up the ranks a bit was Hayden, like obviously Toby Green moved up quite a lot because it's such a prominent role. We got that Frank in the preseason game that happened tonight, which again, I'm not going to say it's, he's going to bang out massive scores every week, but it's just really nice to have that role Frank and it gives you such a good floor. So he moved up a lot. I think Hayden Young moved up a lot for me. I know he's an injury prone player, but I'm such a big believer in having a clean preseason. It's just getting those miles on the belt. If you can get through and get through, I escaped. I think it's a big deal. So he's risen a lot. Who am I fading? I don't know. That's a good question. I don't have to pull up my ranks probably. Anyway, BJ says he's a cherry, probably foolish and york hogs or shelly all in my never-again list. Yeah, I don't think I really have a never-again list. I guess there's players that when they come to in the draft, you might just look down. Probably, I would say John Yucum, maybe as a guy, I've never felt, I must say I wouldn't draft him. I suspect he could go a little bit either way this year, just with that low TOG last year. And a lot of opportunity in that Hawks midfield, he should put out more than he does, but he just doesn't seem to. Does he? Someone I've faded. I mean, I have faded the rocks really. I haven't gone out of my way to draft them. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe, maybe my coach. I find him a tough player to rank. If he's playing off half back, he'll obviously rake, but I've never convinced that that's what they want to do with him. So I think he's a tough guy to draft, and I'm okay missing him. Despite wanting him if he plays that role, Ninja Spoon just in general thought about Slider Survivor vs Normal ranks, anything to be mindful of when doing ranks. I've got to be honest. I haven't, aside from Regis during, I haven't had much of a chance to look into the survivor and what they've done with it this year. So, yeah, look, obviously, if there's interest we'll talk about it next week and get into it. It's just been, there's this week, it's not been a great week in terms of having for free time. Draft Doctor's in turn, Steve, please convince me why I should draft COG this year after he hurt me so badly last year. He'll be cheaper, right? Yeah? Dylan, draft of the goals only league on the weekend. Someone came with handwritten notes with tears, draft rules, salary for fools, absolutely. I'd love to say it, the handwritten notes. The goals only league was a fun league. Jake, if you were drafting BOMB for a game, see some, what would you say? Big surgery. That's one of the best questions I've ever had. Aaron Afro-Fanisey, where do you rate the Holland's burrows? So Elijah Holland's didn't make the ranks. He probably should have, because obviously he was always going to be hitting that spot. Maybe he's, you know, sometimes this can get us back to making realize his talent. But I don't know. Obviously scored pretty well in the preseason game, it's just a preseason game. What's happened in the cart and forward line? Well, that brought in a lot of players from other teams, but yet, where would I rank him? If you wanted to be aggressive, you know, what does he have? All right, so let's go through our checklist. Does he have clean injury history? I mean, he's not really. Has he had a full preseason, yes, by all reports? Has he got a great score history? Not really. Do we see him getting a fantasy friendly role? No. So I don't know that he can be super high. For me, probably if you wanted to be very aggressive, you could put him in the low end of the 20s. Maybe the, probably the 30s would be better. That would be an aggressive ranking. Holy holons. I don't know. I generally genuinely don't know. Probably low. I've never had, I've never really had a share of him. I'm sort of always mindful that guys, you probably got away with bad disposal a little bit more 10 years ago. Whereas now I'm not sure, I'm less convinced you're going to get away with it and be a super valuable member of the team. So I'm pretty down on Archie Roberts versus the community because I don't know that that's his disposal, his strength. Yes, he can find the ball at will. And if you play through the midfield, obviously, you know, you can be a little bit looser with ball use or as you the balls contested. Yeah. Just a little bit. Yeah. Melodyne, when the soup season start, yeah, June, I like footy. Yours, yours and your champion, Tuk Miller, is he shafted out of CDAs as he get forward status? He predicted average. So Tuk Miller is a player I have no shares of this year. All those things are genuine concerns. So I'll have to dig up his average. I think you'll still be fine in super coach. Well, I shouldn't say fine, but he'd be better in super coach. So I'd be more likely to draft him there. Where's the kid? Obviously he gets a little bit of a bump in the early rounds with what's his chops being injured. But yeah, he was pretty effective as a forward last year when he spent time forward. So I don't. It's clearly not going to be as good, but he'll get some time through there. Where's Gold Coast? So about this. Just give me two shakes. And then around Tuk Miller. What did I give him? 93 to 96 for super coach and 85 to 88 for AFL fans. So yeah, he trended downwards in terms of mid time last year and they brought in a higher quality impact midfielder. So it's a great question. You can't be. But that being said, he's such a great runner. He should have good T.O.G relative to the field. Paul just creeps average more than 105 this season. Roll wise, would him or Walsh have a more fruitful fantasy role? So I assume that's Patty Cripp's nice. Soon you're talking about super coach. I could be you're on there. I guess. I would expect them to both have a good role. Does he average more than five? It's a good question. I'm guessing I have him in the ballpark of that. Like I said, I don't have my ranks up right now. That seems like a good ballpark. Let's say that. I would imagine Walsh has more upside. I don't know. The weapon is Nank Cooks. Nank can be fine. Surely. Michael, are you ready to meet and greet our alien lord and save your Jagger Smith? He's not in any of my teams. I'll put it that way. But yeah, no good for him. He looks the goods. I mean, it's pretty as matches. What are you going to do, man? I hope he goes well. I mean, I hate seeing all these guys get injured. I don't know how they, you know, I know they're getting paid for it. But I would say coming back from the running injuries and all that has been tough like those guys who suffer the back-to-back injuries. All like George Ward, Lowe, how it's hamstring, hamstring and concussion. I really feel for them. I feel for them. It's tough. The mental resilience of these guys, like Sam Dockety, to keep getting back on and putting yourself through that. And then you'd be like, especially George Ward, right? Because he's obviously coming up for contract talks and like, I know, I'll have fun with the jokes about injury prone play. But I don't. I mean, no, I want that shit. It's tough and I'll drag him through the mud and people will talk shit about him on social media about how can you give this guy a massive deal when he's up for contract and, you know, his body's busted and I don't know, man. The older I get, the more disillusioned with social media and I think we can see that right. Like if you're on social media, it's tough sledding out there and it's incredibly negative and it's a bad space to be. So I know that a lot of our listeners will get more, I'll get a lot more emails these days than I ever used to. Certainly less interactions on Twitter, which, you know, what the future of the show is, is certainly up in the air at this point in time because I don't like spending as much time on there as I used to. It's less fun, it's just all negative and I think what the media has turned into because of social media, that the reporting in that I'm becoming more jaded about it. And yeah, it's probably a good time to step away and be a little bit more analogue like, I don't know, I don't know how the, how do you guys feel? Like I think it's a good year to pick up a hobby. I remember a sort of wonder why we don't go back to like, like that life being it. I remember when I was a kid in life being it in that norm asshole, which is kind of everywhere right? Like, you know, people wearing t-shirts and it was just about getting out and into your sporting clubs and your local community. Like I feel we need that man. I feel we need norm, getting these fat ass off the couch and having to hit a squash or whatever you want to do, like just be around people and get out in your community and you know, you don't have to be the champion of the club, but you can still get out and do run club or whatever it is man. I feel like society needs norm except, you know, norm wouldn't be norm now. But it did be, you know, it did work a fine norm, right? Like there'd be too much of that and then that'd be weaponized by the media. So you can't really win. Although maybe that's a good thing too. I don't know. It's, look, I live in the country. It's pretty, it's pretty norm. It's pretty 80s advertising. So, I don't know man. I just, the online space is tough. It's tough now. Come on. Anyway, that'll do it for this show. Thank you. I hope it was interesting. We'll see. And yeah, I guess we'll talk some Slider Survivor next week and well, let us know how you drafts win. I mean, is there anything special you do for your draft? Is there dress ups or fancy draft lottery or what the go is? Let us know man. I'm always interested in hearing from the people. If that's email, that's fine. If it's, you can message on the Facebook's as well. It's all good. The Facebook's. Jesus, what am I? 75? Fuck me. Anyway, we'll see you next week.
