Protection Magick

Eli Row, host of the Middle-Aged Witch Podcast, emphasizes the importance of protection magic as a foundational spiritual practice. After addressing last week's topic on hauntings, she explains that protection should precede more advanced or potentially harmful spells like curses and jinks. The process begins with cleansing the space using smoke, water, or energy-based techniques—such as moon water infused with herbs like sage, rosemary, and black obsidian. Once cleansed, protective sigils are drawn on doors and windows using a protective liquid or incense, while a personal mantra is repeated. Wards are then created from any object—like wind chimes, stones, or metal coins—and charged with protective energy through visualization, where the witch channels energy into the object. These wards are placed at entry points to shield homes, vehicles, and personal items. The podcast highlights that even positive, light-hearted witches attract spiritual attention, making proactive protection vital. It encourages listeners to practice cleansing and warding regularly, even in a "clear" space, to build confidence and preparedness. Eli also recommends *The Prick of the Horn* as a focused guide for protective magic, especially for those concerned with demonic or hex-related threats. She concludes by reminding listeners that while the podcast offers guidance, it is not a substitute for professional mental or medical care. The next episode will explore harmful magic like hexes and curses, continuing the journey into spiritual depth and responsibility.

Good morning, good day, or good evening. My name is Eli Row, and this is the middle-aged witch podcast. Today is Thursday, October 14th. The moon is waxing gibbous, and it will be full in aries moving into tourists next Wednesday of the 20th. So we've got about a week from yesterday to get those intentions in order, and I hope everyone is well and enjoying the autumn weather, unless you're in the summer, southern hemisphere in which case, I hope you're enjoying spring weather. And I mentioned this last week, but next month on Thanksgiving Thursday, I'm going to be doing a question and answer episode where I just read listener questions and answer them to the best of my ability. I have reached out to listeners who have submitted questions in the past to get permission to read them on that episode with the understanding that I will change names and details to protect the innocent. And I have heard back from almost everyone, so I really appreciate it and thank you for that. Now, if you would like to submit a question specifically for that episode, please message me on my podcast platform, Anchor, or on Instagram @middleagedwitch on Facebook again @middleagedwitch or just send me a goal fashion email @[email protected]. I always respond directly to every message that I receive. So if you have a question that you do not want me to share on an episode, please send it in any way. And just mention that it's a private question, and I will happily respond privately. I will include my contact info in the show notes as well. Now, this week, I wanted to talk about protection magic for a few reasons. First, coming off of last week's episode about hauntings, specifically my family's own personal haunting because got a really did manage to make that episode all about me. It just seems practical to go over ways to protect oneself from unwanted spirit activity. And secondly, because next week we are going to talk about baneful magic like curses, jinks, jinks, etc. You don't really want to engage in that sort of magic without also protecting yourself. But mostly protection magic is just a really important skill to practice and try to master almost before any other kind of magic. You just need to be able to create a bubble around yourself and around your loved ones, your home, your vehicle, your workspace, your altar. And we have to keep that nasty, funky, ugly, unwanted energy off of us as much as we can. Now we can't protect ourselves from everything, but it's so important to practice good spiritual hygiene. You know, brushing your teeth twice a day may not prevent every single tiny little cavity, but cheese us. Imagine the state of your teeth if you never brushed them, you know, it's the same thing. So with that in mind, we are going to tackle different kinds of protection magic and how exactly to use them. Now, if you're not familiar at all with this podcast, generally, I don't give specific like step by step instructions, because I think it's more important for witches to hear that basics and then experiment to make their own magic more personalized, but with protection magic, I'm going to get into detail because I would rather offer a firm foundation to start with, and then as your confidence and experience grow, you can start branching out and creating your own personal wards and charms. So first and foremost, before you ward yourself or your space, you need to cleanse it because wards aren't going to kick things out. They're just going to pretend, they're pretty, God, I can't speak today. They're going to prevent new things from getting in. So you'll need to do a cleansing first, and then you can throw your wards to keep any new little buggers from getting in. Cleansing can be done in a variety of ways for a variety of needs. Probably I would say smoke cleansing is the way that we're most familiar with, and this is simple. It just entails opening your windows and doors, and you can light herbs or incense, and you just wafed the smoke throughout your space, usually beginning from the back of the home and then moving towards the front. And while you do this, you're going to state your intent firmly and clearly. You're going to want to use incense or herbs that support protection in your home as well. You're going to want to waf your smoke up into the corners and into the closets. You just don't want to leave anywhere for the little nasties to hide. Now if smoke isn't allowed or isn't advised for any reason, you can also make a cleansing spray. But first, you know, make some moon water, which is just as simple as filling a glass or a jar with some filtered water. I think we, you know, I know we did. We went over moon water in the water magic episode, so you can refer back to that. So in addition to your water in this jar, you're going to place some cleansing and purifying herbs in there as well. There's like rosemary, chute basil, cedar, juniper, sage, thyme, lavender, all of those work really well. So if you have other herbs that you'd like to add, especially if you feel prompted by spirit or by your own intuition, then by all needs, add those as well. You can add some cleansing stones to your water too, as long as they're water safe. Some of my favorites to work with for this are clear quartz, amethyst, agate, tiger's eyes, a big ol' protection stone, I love it. Black Obsidian is another one. Again, if there are other stones that you feel called to use, don't let me stop you. However, please do a Google search and just make sure that they're safe to use in water. You don't want to damage your stones. Also, I recommend adding some salt to the water as well, not a lot, just a pinch. It's really cleansing and it can really kick up the power a notch. And that's all there is to it. So you've got your water, your herbs, your stones, you put it outside or on a windowsill overnight in full view of the moon and it'll be ready to use in the morning. Some witches will suggest doing this on the full moon so that you get the full power of the moon in your water. Others will suggest waiting for the new moon since you're using the water for banishing. I say, either method is fine, just pick your favorite. And then in the morning, you're going to strain out your herbs and put the water into a spray bottle. You can leave the stones in there if you like because they're not going to get sucked up into the little spray mechanism and wreck it. So the stones are fine. Those can stay in there if you want to leave them in there. And then you just proceed throughout your home as you would if you were using smoke. You open the windows and you just spritz the shit out of all the negative or oppressive free loaders that are in your space. If you can't do this to your entire home for whatever reason, maybe you have roommates that don't approve, maybe you're still living with your parents. You can certainly still just do it in your own bedroom at least, the space where you spend the most time. What's really great about the water method, it is so versatile and it's very discreet. If you're not so worried about roommates or parents, but you're still not down with smoke or water. You can also just use your own energy to get rid of unwanted entities into teas. And by that, I mean, you're just going to raise a bunch of energy in your space and just literally shout those bastards out of your house. Because as we constantly hear, the tools aren't where the magic comes from, the magic comes from the witch. So turn on some music that raises your personal vibrations, turn it on good and loud and start dancing. And I mean, really move your body, throw yourself around. This isn't going on YouTube. This isn't going on TikTok. So don't worry about how it looks. Don't even think about how it looks. Just start calling in energy, get your muscles warm, really move your body. When you feel like you're really in the zone and you feel like you're at the peak of that energy bubble, grab a bell or a drum or even just like a pot and a wooden spoon and just start banging the hell out of it, make a ton of racket and start commanding those unwanted entities to leave your space. It works. It's effective. And it's fun. Now, once you've cleansed the space, you're going to place sigils on your doors and windows. This can be any sigil that you've personally made or it can be like a pre-existing well-known ancient symbol like a Pensacole or even a cross if that resonates with you. So to place these sigils, you can use the same moon water that you already made. If that's the method that you used, you can use Florida water. You can use holy water if you happen to have some. I actually posted a recipe for Florida water on Instagram and Facebook back in like mid-September. So you can go look that up if you're interested. It's easiest hell to make and it smells really great and it's very effective. I love making Florida water and it's not going to be clear like it will be if you if you buy it at the store, but I mean it's cheap as chips if you do buy it at the store. It's like $3 for a bottle. So either way, whatever you decide to use, anyway, you're going to dab some of the liquid of your choice on your fingertip and draw your sigils. while you're repeating this protective mantra that you've come up with, whatever it may be. You can also use chalk or you can just light a stick of incense and trace your sigil in the air a few inches from the windows or doors. So now your space is cleansed, your doors and your windows have been sigilized and next we're going to lock the building or the room or the space down. Tight and we're going to make sure none of those little beasties come back. So for this we're going to make and set wards. Now you can turn anything into a ward. Some of the wards around our home just to give you an idea. I've got some metal wind chimes in the backyard. I've got a set of witch bells on the front door. I have hagg stones on several of the windowsills. I have crystals on several of the other windowsills. I've got a spell jar that's buried near the front walkway of our home. I've got a large metal coin that I keep in my car. I've got a big jar of black salt in my office at work. Oh, and I have some iron railroads spikes that are buried at the floor corners of our property. And you know, that's not even all of them. At a ward can be made of almost anything. Its purpose is just to house the protective energy that you put into it. And to release that protective energy over a period of time to cover your space. So to make some object into a ward first choose your object. It really can be anything. It can be like a cool stone that you find. It can be, you know, a handful of acorns that you gathered on your morning walk through the park. It can be something that you've bought like a wind chime. I find that some objects are a little better at housing energy than others. I think that natural materials. Wood and metal and glass. I feel like they seem to hold energy longer and work a little bit better. You may vary, especially if the object that you've chosen has special sentimental value. Like, I don't know, maybe like it's like it's a teddy bear that you're duly departed grandma that they're gave to you. And this is where you as the witch need to make that judgment call for yourself. So you cleanse your ward the same way that you cleansed your space before before you charge it before you set it as a ward. You're going to cleanse it. And again, you can use smoke or water, whatever you choose. Then you're going to jam as much protective energy that you can create into the object. So for this, you're going to draw the energy into yourself first. So, you know, at your altar or even outside, we'd be sitting on the earth itself or just in some other private space. Feel if you can and set your object in front of it. Close your eyes if it helps and just envision this energy being pulled into your body through the palms of your hands, moving up through your arms into your torso. Just this blinding white hot olive energy inside your chest, building and getting bigger and stronger and hotter. And then you just blast that energy back out through your palms into the object. This takes time and practice to feel confident about it. So don't get discouraged to start doing it. And, you know, the first couple times you feel like you're not even sure anything's happening. It is, it is. But again, as you get more familiar with the concept of it and the actual act of doing it, you're going to start to feel more confident. You're really going to be able to start envisioning it and feeling it. And so you can make as many words as you think that you need. And then you place them where you want them. You're going to want them maybe near the points of entry to your home or your space at your front and back porch might be a good choice in or near your office or vehicle, your locker at school or your purse or wallet too, so that you can carry that protection around with you. Or to check in with your words periodically because they will need to be charged from time to time. And then eventually if you have a word that kind of gets to the point that you feel like it's just done all that it can for you, and you just don't feel like you're going to be able to use it anymore. Or it's protection and retire it. And if it's something natural like a stone, you can return it to nature. If it's something that doesn't work as a word anymore, but still hold sentimental value and just keep it. And that should be sufficient to keep out most mundane forms of unwanted energy or entities. And you can repeat this process as needed to keep yourself and your space is cleared and rest easy. And there are a lot of books that contain sections on protective magic. And I know that Celtic magic by DJ Conway, for example, has a section also shoe got cottage witchery by Ellen Dugan also has sections on protection. And then they're all around good witchcraft books, but probably my favorite book of protection is called by Rustiff nail and prick of the horn. It's written by Althea Sebastiani. It's not a long book at all, but it is only about protection magic. And it's one of my personal favorites on the topic because it's it's so narrowly focused. And it goes through the theory a lot more thoroughly than some other books and it goes through so many different kinds of protective workings. So particularly if you're concerned about anything that we would typically call demonic or if you feel that you've personally been hexed, it's worth it to have that little book to consult. Again, I'm going to put those books links to those books or just the information. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm going to put those in the show notes just so that if you want to follow up and look into those, you'll be able to do so easily. Now, as a witch, even if you never do anything bad in your whole life and you're a total light worker and you never do painful magic and you're the world's best healer, there's the very fact of your magic is going to attract all kinds of attention from the spirit world. And not all of that attention is going to be welcome, you know, the same light that attracts guardian angels will attract negative entities as well. So it's just best to be prepared. And I hope that this information has helped you to feel prepared. So even if your home currently feels totally clear, just do a cleansing to practice, it can't hurt to have the experience under your belt so that in the event goddess forbid that you ever do feel attacked or compromised, you'll have the confidence to clean your own house and set those magical boundaries so that it's less likely to happen again. So join me next week when we talk a bit about Halloween and get into the deep dark muddy waters of painful work like hexes, jinks and curses. Until then, my name is Eli and you've been listening to the middle aged witch podcast.
