Hello, Task Force.
This is Christian here to tell you about our show Movie Club yet again,
the first and third Friday of every month over at redwebpot.com.
You can get access to our show Movie Club,
where we will take a movie, usually a horror movie,
but sometimes we dabble.
We will talk about it, give our initial thoughts.
Alfredo leads us through the plot, and we'll react along the way.
And then we wrap up with some final thoughts.
It's kind of like a movie review show, kind of like a plot summary show.
And it's a great way, whether you have seen the movie or have not,
to be able to be a part of the conversation and share your thoughts on it.
Again, the first and third Friday of every month.
over at redwebpot.com.
Here is a preview of this week's episode on the movie that I chose,
Companion.
The film opens in a supermarket.
A young woman named Iris, played by Sophie Thatcher,
is walking around when she meets a guy named Josh, played by Jack Quaid.
He tries to make a good first impression,
only to accidentally cause a pile of oranges to collapse.
But Iris finds it funny.
Her voiceover states that there were two moments when she felt happiest.
The first is when she met Josh, and the second,
was the day she killed him.
Incredible.
Great opening.
I love me a cold open like that.
Yes.
Though I'm very bothered by him taking the top orange and the bottom falls out.
It sounds like something was wrong that moment, but. It's true, but it makes sense.
Yes, it does make sense.
And truly, I love a cold open like that.
It sets the tone so perfectly.
Yeah.
Iris and Josh are now a couple and are traveling to a lake house to meet their friends.
Kat, Eli, his boyfriend Patrick, Kat's boyfriend,
Sergey, Iris is a bit nervous around them because Kat is a bit rude to her.
They party, they dance.
The next day, Iris is by the lake and runs into Sergey.
He makes an attempt to come on to her, but she objects.
When he doesn't stop, she shoves him backwards where he hits his head on a rock.
Sergey gets up and tries to strangle Iris,
but she takes out a knife that was in her pocket and stabs Sergey in the neck.
She returns to the house covered in blood, freaking everyone out.
Iris frantically tries to explain herself.
Josh just tells her, "Iris, go to sleep," and she shuts down, her eyes going white.
And that's when I knew the poster was a spoiler.
I love how this isn't just the tail-end ending.
You know what I mean?
This isn't in the third act.
This is immediately, we're off to the races.
Like, everything is flipped on its head, and I love it.
I love the moment.
Mm-hmm.
Oh, yeah.
Like, 25 minutes in.
Yeah, dude.
And it just immediately, like, again, watching it for the second time,
all of it makes so much sense, because, like, Kat doesn't like Iris.
You know, there's a scene where they're talking, and Kat's like,
"It's not that I don't like you.
I don't like the idea of you.
It makes me feel replaceable."
Yeah.
And obviously, the first time, you're like, "What the hell are you on about, Kat?"
And, like, the movie opens when they're in the car with Josh saying, "Iris, wake up,"
and then she's in the car with him.
Or, like, there's a night where he says, "Iris, go to sleep."
Like, you're just seeing all these little kernels.
They're so obvious in hindsight.
Oh, it's so well done.
It's so good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Even just, like, how curt he is in his talking to her.
Mm-hmm.
And now we're like, "Oh, that's like when I say, 'Alexa, what's the forecast?'"
And then it's like, the FIFA World Cup, the U.S. lost to Belgium by--
It's like, "Oh, you're spoiling it! That's not what I asked!"
So you get all, like-- you just get real curt and frustrated so easily,
because it's just, like, it's so easy to see it just as technology,
as this, like, a personal thing, but this movie, like, really--
really blurs those lines.
Here's a glimpse behind my curtain here.
When you don't know that going in, you're like, "God, this guy's a dick!"
And I realize when you finally see that, I'm like, "Oh!"
They snuck it under me where I'm, like, building sympathy for something
that otherwise has very strong feelings around it in the real world.
Mm-hmm.
Again, like you said, Fredo, very ex machina.
In that movie, you know the whole time, but in this movie--
and it kind of plays with that from a different direction.
Here, I'm like, "Oh, you have no idea," but then it all makes sense.
Oh, man, yeah, it's a brilliant little magician's trick there.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, I really love the way this movie opens,
'cause it reminds me of one of my favorite reads of all time,
which is "The Nice House by the Lake."
Mm.
And then justifies to me that that should be a TV show.
Dude, 100%.
I just love the fact that they all went to this place,
and then there was that foot that dropped, and it was just like,
"Oh, we are--this is not what I thought this show was gonna be."
Same thing as the show that we're all watching.
Oh, Perry.
Paradise.
Paradise, there it is.
Perry, Perry.
Yeah.
You watch the end of that first episode, you go,
"This is not what is happening."
Yeah, talk about a hook.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Yeah, and so I love it.
I love, like, it's instantly, like, flipped on its head.
Yeah, I mean, speaking of "Nice House on the Lake,"
Book Club is available here on Patreon.
I think we just uploaded the whole thing as, like, $4.99
or whatever it is on Patreon that you can just buy the whole, like, set,
'cause that was on Rooster Teeth First way back in the day, so.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm gonna go ahead and do that with some of the panels.
That was a whole big, huge discussion.
They just wrapped up the second arc, so.
All right, I gotta catch up now, yeah.
I would love for years from now for that to get re-lit to be, like, a show,
and they'd be like, "Look!
We talked about it, like, seven years ago!"
"We were on the ground floor!"
