Preseason Power-Up! + The Curious Case of Cyrus Allen - Dynasty Fantasy Football

In this episode of the Fantasy Footballers Dynasty Podcast, hosts Borg and Mike (with Betts absent) dive into preseason takeaways and the reality of rookie wide receiver production. They start by addressing key injuries, such as Mike Evans’ fluctuating practice status and Jordan Tyson’s setback, which hurts dynasty owners who’ve waited for his breakout. They also highlight Juwan Johnson as a silver lining for the Saints, given his potential role early in the season. The hosts stress the need to temper hype with historical probabilities, noting that rookie wide receivers, especially day-three picks like Cyrus Allen, typically start slow—averaging minimal snaps and targets in the first six weeks. They use this lens to evaluate Allen’s situation with the Chiefs, where Rashee Rice’s legal issues and Xavier Worthy’s gadget-like role create opportunity, but Patrick Mahomes’ camp hype history warrants caution. They advise holding Allen rather than selling low, as his current trade value is likely minimal. The conversation also touches on Keenan Allen’s impact on the Colts, potentially affecting Josh Downs and Brock Bowers’ target share, and Jayden Daniels’ recent controversy, which they view as a mistake but not a reason to root against him. Finally, they discuss rookie draft rankings, placing Allen around the top 12 but behind players like Tate, Tyson, and Stribbling, while noting Antonio Williams’ stock has fallen due to Stefon Diggs’ arrival. The episode concludes with a promise to revisit rookie drafts later in the season.

Speaker 1Welcome to the Fantasy Footballers Dynasty Podcast with Borg, Betts, and a Baller.
Speaker 2Welcome in! It's the Fantasy Footballers Dynasty Podcast with two champions here today.
Speaker 3Just two cool guys, reigning champs of the League of Record. Goodness gracious.
Speaker 4On top of the world, it would be an understatement when everybody else around Ballers Headquarters is just... Not even on the map? Like, they're just not even there.
Speaker 3That is... That is correct. Because I am also the reigning champ of the Dynasty League, so... What are you gonna do?
Speaker 4Yeah, you know, it hurts a little bit because we were runners-up. Jeremy and I were... You probably... I don't even know if you remember, but we were there, but not really.
Speaker 3I mean, I remember some people tried to beat my team. I don't really remember who or what. I mean, nothing was really in the... My team was kind of...
Speaker 5Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Speaker 3It was light and breezy walking through.
Speaker 4Hookah and JSN were in the way. They just couldn't bring us home a title. Man. You have both those guys? I can't tell if you're about to then, like, punch me in the stomach with like...
Speaker 3Oh, I'm just like, I mean, if you have both those guys, my team must be really good.
Speaker 4I knew that was coming. Yeah, I knew that was coming. It's just Mike and I today, Betts decided that it would be more important for him... To spend time with his family in the month of August, which just happens to be the busiest part of the year.
Speaker 3Yeah, Betts is like, oh, what, the busiest month? How about, can I do a week? This freaking guy.
Speaker 4And of all times... And everyone's getting hurt. That's the problem, is that no one else on staff is a trained medical expert. I know that Jason is our next best option, but it's not great when I see somebody go down. I'm like, I don't know if this is, like, season ending or, like, he's back tomorrow. And Betts isn't really here to tell us. But, like, the list goes on and on. I had somebody, Mike, my neighbor, ask me, he said, hey, so how's that fantasy thing going this year? Like, doesn't really understand it. Just kind of casually asked. And what I really wanted to respond with was a list of all the players that I'm concerned about from moment to moment. The entire 49ers roster, honestly.
Speaker 3Yep. Yep. Mike Evans, I mean, he was back at practice this week. And he is back out of practice this week.
Speaker 4I think the one that hurts the most for us collectively, for myself and Dynasty, is Jordan Tyson. And we'll go through a number of preseason names. But that's the one where, like, I just held steady the entire process, going through the prospects. And now it just hurts that I took about 102. And I know it'll be better. But this point of the offseason...
Speaker 3When you start like this, though, it... I mean, you were... You've been waiting. Like, the moment is upon you. It is at hand. The beginning of the season was right there to see the glorious Jordan Tyson-Chris Olave combo with Shuck Daddy giving people the business. And now we have to wait even longer.
Speaker 4I know. And the problem is Nick Underhill is probably one of the best beat writers there are out there. And when he says stuff, we pay attention. But, like, every single day, he's basically like, Jordan Tyson. Yeah. He's going to crush this year. Like, he only said over-the-top stuff. So, yeah, that one kind of hurts.
Speaker 3Well, I mean, he said a lot of other very positive stuff about someone, too, Kyle. Just say it. Just talk about it. Juwan-son, a.k.a. Juwan Johnson. Dude, yes. That's the only silver lining for me as, like, an OG Juwan-son truther have had him forever on Dynasty rosters. And he has, I mean, many occasions. Juwan Johnson has come through as a playable fantasy tight end. And he's going to have a bunch of opportunity to start the year.
Speaker 4Those are the best kind of fantasy tight ends. The guys that you held on to, you know, he's an undrafted free agent and then suddenly turns into something else. So, on today's episode, we're going to go through a couple of preseason takeaways. And I'm just going to ask you a simple question, Mike. Do you care or do you not care? And you and I will get through some of the data, especially about rookie-wide receivers. I think that's one of the main conversations I want to have with people.
Speaker 6Okay.
Speaker 4And I don't know if this is, like, a bad part of what I do for my job. But, like, I like to throw cold water on hype. Maybe that's my personality.
Speaker 3Well, it's definitely your personality. But it does need to happen. Like, this is the time of year that the majority of stuff is the everything is overly positive. And, like, if you've played fantasy football for more than a season, it's like, you know that's not how it goes. The players, you can, everything can be there for that player. And an injury derails it. Or just, like, an injury to someone else on the team. Or just, like, one slight thing and all of a sudden that situation is drastically changed. Which is what we talk about a lot for a Dynasty show is don't draft, don't fully just draft situation. You want to draft talented players because situations change. And generally speaking, doesn't. Yeah, I mean, every once in a while you get a player, like, you get a Parker Washington where it's a day three pick. And we're going into, like, year three of Parker. And the buzz is off the charts now of maybe this player is going to, you know, of course, not that he wasn't talented. But people hadn't truly seen what he could become. So it's, but anyway, zooming back out. Yes, you need to, when you really, really like a player, you do need to do the thought exercise of, okay, how can I be wrong about this? Yeah, like, try to be honest with yourself and give real answers. You might come to it and be like, no, I still, I still fully believe in the side of positivity. But it's, it's a good, it's a good way to check and balance yourself.
Speaker 4We play a game of probability. And I, I just want to, like, zoom out sometimes and just say, okay, what's actually the reality of every single year? Because we go through the same cycle and we're, like, we're so bad, myself included. We just forget, like, did I do this last year at this exact same time and get really hyped over the potential for football? That's really what it is.
Speaker 3Yeah, because it's fun.
Speaker 4There's an appetite that I want cool things to happen, like, in football.
Speaker 3Betting unders, betting against someone is just, it's, it's not fun. It's how we.
Speaker 4If Betts were on this podcast, he would say, this is why we only give unders or why we mostly give unders.
Speaker 3No, I just did a. A spot for Ross Tucker's betting podcast. He has this co-host. I wasn't familiar with Steve and he laid it out. He's like, basically, if you had gone, if you go to all the props and just take all the unders, he's like, you will win about 60% of those. Yep. But it's just. At what cost? That's what I ask you, Kyle. At what cost?
Speaker 4Your soul. Of course. And that's why the format that we get to talk about in this podcast, Dynasty. Is the one that's brimming with the most hope, the most optimism. You can wait it out the longest. And that's why you all play Dynasty football. So we'll talk about some of those players today. Some of our preseason takeaways. I do want to remind everyone, we are still doing the ultimate draft kit for life giveaway. If you order the UDK by August 24th, you are entered in to either win the UDK for life or assign Jamar Chase jersey. Everything's updated. Even when my boy Keenan Allen signed late in the night.
Speaker 3We got. Hey, I was there. I was awake because it came to us on the best coast at around 830 or something.
Speaker 4Yeah, I was about to get in bed and I just said for Keenan, I'll stay up.
Speaker 3I can't imagine you went to bed last night. You just sat in your summoning circle.
Speaker 4I was doing the math and we talked about it on the main podcast. But Mike, I mean, for wide receivers, he's going to be third all time if he just stays alive this season.
Speaker 3That is absurd. Number three in receptions for wide receivers is like, how do you not get in the hall?
Speaker 4Dude, he's not going to be first ballot, but he will get in.
Speaker 3No, it'll take some time, but it's like, how do you keep the number three wide receiver in terms of total career receptions? How would you possibly keep him out?
Speaker 4He's the Ichiro. He's just going to keep racking up hits, man, and just keep going. And it's not the sexiest thing ever.
Speaker 3And we didn't really talk about it. The impact of Warren, you know, like Downs is a huge loser in this equation. And it's like, I really do think it affects Warren's target share. Not a ton. And then I'm going in to do my stats. I'm like, there's just, there's no way Warren's not still the tight end four, though. You could say it's a negative impact to him. So I kind of made the gap between Colston Loveland and Warren a little bit larger for this year. But you don't, you know, wow. I don't think it does matter.
Speaker 4changes how i'm gonna be drafting warren yeah i think overall it raises some of the floor of the offense because i mean you just it was nick westbrook akine it was ashton doolin i did realize that keenan's gonna have to ask for the number 13 jersey from the great laquan treadwell on the team i mean i mean hopefully he'll give it up the way that jayden won't so it i think it helps the overall yeah that was jayden daniels little poke um how by the way side note jayden daniels very likable guy in terms of like player on the field what he did and then he saw a quarterback he kind of got to get to know him he's kind of quiet but man in the last week the world has turned against
Speaker 3you how to fumble your your public persona in one action because it's dumb it's arrogant it's selfish it's just stupid it's all man it's ridiculous there there's so many layers to that i am the number five okay okay bro what have you what have you done where's your championships like if you want to play this game because we all loved you we all think you're an up-and-coming franchise quarterback you want to play this game what have you done you got drafted real early where's your
Speaker 4titles yeah i i i feel awkward about it because i'm rooting for the player yes no i still like jayden daniels it was just that was a mistake yeah yeah it's it's it's awkward um i did have a quick question for us because i really wanted to give us a little bit of room here because jason stole some thunder that you and i have been working on in the depths which is just looking at rookie wide receivers and i think this really applies to dynasty and what do they do in the first six weeks of the year i think it's really important to look at rookie wide receivers and i in redraft there's a different conversation of what should you do with rookie wide receivers in dynasty you can wait it out but you and i were kind of looking at players kind of trying to figure out like okay cyrus allen someone we didn't talk about last week that i think we can talk about today or jacoby lane some of these hot name rookie wide receivers how much are they going to be on the field and the data that we found is kind of overwhelming that they get off to slow starts and we kind of know that we kind of know that they're going to be on the field and we kind of understand that if you're a round two wide receiver you're going to average 48 percent of the snaps and less than four targets in the first six weeks round three wide receivers 30 percent of the snap and if you're a day three pick like cyrus allen the average snaps in the first six weeks of the season is 24 and the fantasy points is basically puka romeo dobbs and nobody else over the last decade romeo dobbs is a standout in this study yeah i did that mostly i was like there is a name here and mike will appreciate that but it's more of us like zooming out and asking yourselves the question what could we actually expect from these players and cyrus allen's the one that i want to zoom in on andy laid out a case recently of him as a sleeper in redraft that's fine you could shoot your shot i'm not expecting very much early on in the season and tons of production but like where do we go with the hype of cyrus allen what people want him to be what rishi rice is in the offense so do you ever read on the chiefs and how you see alan because
Speaker 3we didn't talk about him last week and people were mad about it uh i'd like i thought you know one it was like oh boy here we go again of the kansas city chief who's dominating uh training camp and then will certainly turn into nothing but it's like thornton taekwon thornton is still there and he was you know better for the team than i think people realize uh when you when you think about the name taekwon thornton but he did just go down uh yesterday to to an injury i don't think we have an update on it but it's like if the if if the roadblocks keep clearing for him then you have to you pay attention you know his size you like you can make the size case if he's too small so was tyree kill i'm not in this i'm not saying cyrus allen is tyree kill but just of like the both in the fifth round both undersized both you know twitchy of like there's some there's some comparisons you can draw but it's just i felt like there was too many people in the way and maybe by the end of the year cyrus allen is is really making some noise but i i do think you have to pay attention to these things because and a thing and let me let me backtrack it in fantasy football a lot of the stuff that we talk about in this information is we're trying to like just plant some seeds in your brain some seeds of information where you know my sleeper for this year that i just talked about on the main show it's pat bryant is pat bryant gonna do anything at the beginning of the year probably nothing of real note but when he does start to do stuff which i think is will happen that's when like you got those seats like oh i remember we were talking about this of that if this player starts to make moves i should aggressively go and pursue that player you know like on the waiver wire or whatever and cyrus allen is the same type of thing it's not not everything we talk about is like you got to go trade this player or you got to trade this player away immediately it's it's some context it's the it's filling in the gaps of the information stuff that will help you make the decision when the time
Speaker 4the decision pops up the historical data of the day three wide receiver is like a huge gut punch to me of like oh man i you know historically i would bet against this the situation of the chiefs i mean if it hadn't happened it's like yeah it doesn't matter then it's like then basically no one has done it and you think about the best ones like even amon raw didn't do anything in the first six weeks like it was that end of season run when he really you know came to for teams and it was really important but it's the situation with the chiefs that i that i don't think it's that i that has me at least the most attuned because rishi rice has been a player that i've kind of consistently bet against in almost every format because it's like this production this route bush is not it's hard to sustain over a long period of time you have the legal stuff and i would assume right now i think we talked about a couple weeks ago i'm assuming he doesn't get an extension with the chiefs that's where i am as well yeah or i'm approaching it that way and then xavier worthy somebody that we used to talk about on this cast he feels like a guy in the best way i i just think he feels like a gadget player at this point like i was shocked he scored last year 10 plus fantasy points once for the entire season yeah
Speaker 3i think i was just talking about him with my son and i was like i think he has 1100 total yards or so in two years as a first round wide receiver for a team that desperately needs wide receiver help is like that is a that's a pretty strong indictment on you as a player there there's still time like he could have a year three really think turn things around but you know we we play the probability we play historical probabilities and this profile is it doesn't look great yeah through two seasons just
Speaker 4just to give you historical data there have been 40 first round wide receivers the last 20 years that have had 100 catches so 100 catches through two years of those 40 wide receivers he's dead last in ppr points per game dead last in receiving yards per game and dead last in yards per target goodness gracious man it it feels like we've had an opportunity for him but he's fast yes and he had that super bowl well i guess it was kind of a blowout performance at the very end that didn't really matter but so i lay that out because i look at this team and if rice isn't on the team and worthy is kind of a gadget player there is a runway kelsey getting older for him to kind of step in there's also this thing in the back of my mind that says patrick mahomes might be a better player than he is like player gm in how he talks about players whether it's like you know clinton's flair or sky more whoever it's like he's had players that he's hyped up in camp and then they've kind of not come to fruition so that that's my cold water on him but like i don't really know what else you like i'm not telling people to trade him away because you got him for free no i would if if i had cyrus right now i would not
Speaker 3cash out i'd rather because i don't think the cash out right now is is worth it you know like to just get the bird in hand for for alan it's not going to be very much if someone wants to weigh over if they want to pay you like it's an inevitability that it's going to happen then maybe i'm willing to cash out i just don't think that the offers are going to be very strong and the the what could happen i would i'd just leave him on my bench i think that's fair i will finish
Speaker 4with this question about cyrus allen because it's it's a fascinating topic and dynasty and we'll see how that works in the beginning of the season so i gave some cold water stuff if you were redrafting the rookies right now because like any talk about a weird profile a guy that wasn't invited to the combine drops to round five like there's a lot of red flags just in that sense but if we were going through the rookie wide receivers and you were doing your rookie draft today like i had someone message me say hey i have my rookie draft this week should i take cyrus out in the first round of my draft my rookie draft and i'm like i could not in good conscience tell you to do that but in the order of wide receivers i'm going to take tate tyson lemon concepcion boston stribbling stribbling and then it's really like cooper i would probably still take ahead of him although i was very very
Speaker 3down on cooper oh man the news is not i don't think we've heard a single good piece of news
Speaker 4on him i've only heard negative news about him falling behind you know isaiah williams and adonai mitchell and how he's integrated in the offense so then does he belong in the mid-second
Speaker 3round of a rookie draft where we took bernard and antonio yeah like jeremy bernard i'm gonna still take in front of him um chris bell may antonio williams is like his draft stock has changed a lot you know of he was he was when you're drafting antonio williams you are that was more of a drafting a a situation stefan diggs is in town situation has changed uh dramatically at least for year one for antonio williams not that he's not that it's over but year one is probably not happening um jacoby lane malachi fields i think i'm still gonna put and then and then after that if you want to go cyrus i think that's
Speaker 4that's fine i think he probably lands somewhere around top 12 which is crazy to say but like the nfl in itself did not have him on the radar he was snubbed he had a great season in cincinnati so it's probably overlooked in general we'll see what he is we'll check back in i know we'll do an episode probably seven or eight weeks into the season where we will do a rookie draft redo and it's really fun for us to kind of update and say hey here's where we were wrong here's what changed and there's a lot that could be done but i think he's probably going to land somewhere around top 12 change with the chiefs and how the offense functions last little note on him is he was 80 out wide as an underclassman 92 in the slot last year so i kind of like the versatility i i mean i
Speaker 3agree with that what but where so it underclassmen's which what school was it um before he
Speaker 4was at he was at a small school i'm gonna get it right before i mess it up um profile uh louisiana louisiana tech then texan him and then cincinnati this last year yeah so it's the
Speaker 3i it's a it is a data point of worth paying attention but i also do factor in okay once you got to the big school you got put in the slot like you know what i mean like your competition at louisiana tech of of who you're normally playing if you're a top tier athlete even though you're at that size you're gonna be able to do a lot of things you're gonna be able to do a lot of things you're gonna be able to have some success against those defenders he will be the name a year from now
Speaker 4that we'll have a conversation the podcast but remember when we had that cyrus allen hype and it was worth it or remember we had that cyrus allen hype and he didn't do anything till the end of the year so let's take a quick break and we'll talk about some preseason takeaways i was looking at what some of the rookies did last year in the first six weeks luther burden which is like crazy to say now because luther burden hype is
Speaker 3is very different um it's i don't fully comprehend what happened with the way that the market got so on board so fast with luther he had one long touchdown against dallas in week three
Speaker 4but he averaged 25 percent of the snaps through the first six weeks like if you had taken him in redraft there's no chance you were holding on to luther burden no absolutely not yeah you were just you were dropping him um some other guys like trey harris 34 of the snaps first six weeks isaac tesla your boy no he caught three passes in the first six weeks also not sounding great out of detroit it's a bummer i mean dan wanted to trade a couple of thirds yeah
Speaker 3and just see what happens so you just do the the uh the evolution of his game doesn't sound like it's happening at the speed of which it should be moving on preseason power up
Speaker 4uh yeah yeah i i have to confess that when i was on the plane to la this past weekend goofy movie was on there yeah a goofy movie i didn't watch it oh that's usually a sucker for you know sandlot angels in the
Speaker 3outfield whatever is on there from the 90s i watched it in my during vacation in june and it was still great it dude it's so good it's so good all right we want to go through a couple
Speaker 4of pre-season headlines and kind of say do we care do we not care i did look back at this doc as we've done this show the last couple years remember in 2023 when kenny pickett had a perfect pre-season yep i remember that one i i had been waiting for
Speaker 3you know just had stored it away to uh bring it up in case uh in case like the carson beck game got brought up again because i was gonna say uh remember jj mccarthy in pre-season his rookie year the dude was on fire like then he when he got his first game in pre-season his injury it was like no no mccarthy has been destroying in pre-season and so chill out with
Speaker 4pre-season quarterbacks yes and prison statistics we'll bring up a couple just to like give context but they don't mean much 2024 remember when caleb had that wild off-balance throw to roma dunze down the sideline so they're both rookies yep that went viral um that same year devin singletary like all the time he was like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm he is our dude he is the only dude on the roster and nobody else matters and then tyrone tracy ended up stealing the job that one was kind of interesting last year some headlines spencer rattler got all the first team reps he is the clear starter he he was this is true started for a while marvin mims he had snaps with all the starters and then left the game at the same time
Speaker 3that was our note what do you call it when like someone so sean payton you know over the course of marvin mims career he has just publicly adored him and said good things and i think like you know payton could say we know that how he gets about some of his players some at times which is like i'm like whoa take it easy on pat bright dude like i gotta be able to believe this stuff but payton said would just always say great stuff about marvin mims and how we got to get him on the field we got to get him on the field but then never playing him so i'm saying what do you call it when you just publicly say how great someone is but then all of your actions are like no you hate that guy what are you doing it's got to be a word
Speaker 4for this just a bad father and a bad friend maybe just a terrible person i'm gonna start looking through the dictionary all right this other one stood out to me this is in our doc last year and i totally forgot this player was in the nfl but zay jones during the preseason was on the field for more offensive snaps with the first team than michael wilson so like when the cardinals were in 12 personnel last preseason you would have been like zay jones is the starting wide receiver on the outside wasn't he also suspended to start the year yeah he had some some like off the field stuff yeah but like there was no hype and michael wilson was the point right there was nothing there all right i want to go through a couple teams and you can tell me if you care you don't care but i think my favorite team that i want to talk about first is the cleveland rogers team and i'm going to talk about the cleveland rogers team and i'm going to talk about the cleveland rogers team and i'm going to talk about the cleveland rogers team and i'm going to talk about the cleveland rogers team and i'm going to favorite team that i want to talk about first is the cleveland browns and their wide receivers because this is confirming all my priors with casey concepcion they basically used him in so many different ways three receptions he had a carry for a touchdown he had a punt return where he tripped after going 31 yards he looked super explosive and then boston was starting like it's clear that it's boston judy and then probably casey starting out in the slot hopefully he can move to the outside one do you care who the quarterback is for these rookie wide receivers uh do i care of course yes
Speaker 3do you care so then who do you want it to be none of their quarterbacks i mean i care this is what i'm talking about um there there's no one on this roster that can have sustained consistent production for an nfl offense and a lot of the guys that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the roster that are on the there's no one on this roster that can have sustained consistent production for an nfl offense and a let alone like fantasy football players i know she do her like she do her overfed um harold fannin last year so maybe that can happen again so let me be less hyperbolic i think one there's enough fantasy points for like one guy to be very good there's not enough to have three players be all very good and there's not enough for if it's spread out more than what harold like it was real consolidated for fannin last year his target share was great if that target share comes down because there's other guys getting involved and it's going to be it's going to be painful
Speaker 4yeah there's there's a worry that they're going to cannibalize each other on a really bad offense with the worst quarterback combo this side of atlanta in the nfl the side of atlanta i'm trying to figure out like who has the worst quarterback room the falcons or the browns um the fact that it's even a conversation right now is what makes me sad we're well i mean it's it's it's a matter of perspective well they both have two quarterbacks which means means they have no i'm saying worse
Speaker 3for this year the browns worse to fix your situation quicker the falcons that thing's not getting fixed where like but you know what i like about the browns and what we're seeing one you're feeling better about so concepcion was basically the the 104 the 105 like edgarian price you're feeling better about so concepcion was basically the 104 the 105 like edgarian price kind of made a uh uh a meteoric rise where i saw him going you know three at uh in certain places
Speaker 4price over concepcion in dino jr at the 105 right yeah and like i just did a draft with
Speaker 3the biggest loser and in his uh i mean the mckay lemon went three then it went price and then it i'm saying right after that as concepcion because that was our our that was kind of like the consensus wide receiver for in terms of talent we loved him it was it was a gut punch when he went to cleveland because you knew that this won't be the year and then it was the the gut punch turned into a uh like a roundhouse to the gut because then they added boston so they took two of our guys uh off the shelf for the next for the next year but it what they're doing at least gives me hope of next year you know if the browns are as bad as they should be and the quarterback depth in the draft stays where it is right now which we've we've had quarterback depth at the beginning of a college season and then by the time we got to the end it was like i don't even know who the number one quarterback is but this quarterback class looks pretty good if they can get one of those guys it could turn around real quick for concepcion in boston like do you do you i feel like i'm i'm just so negative and so out on cleveland as an offense this year do you have any other not i mean you so hot water do you have any you have any hot water you want to pour
Speaker 4into my cup warm me up i think one of the things that we've always loved monken so that's like part of like a boost in the morale of like what this team could be we have liked monken as an offensive yes no no and things can change when you're trying to you know i'm concerned that a coach of his age
Speaker 3who is just now getting his shot to be the head coach like there's you know we're kind of speaking out of both sides of our mouth of like you we always want the head coach to be the offense but there's definitely offensive coordinators who are not good head coaches that happens a lot
Speaker 4he just has a track record from tampa bay back in the day to at the university of georgia like his offenses were top notch to recently with the ravens he just has a long track record where you don't just look at like one place and say oh and maybe that's just
Speaker 3where this dude was personality wise behind harbaugh but it's like the leader who's who's going to bring the whole vision together and make sure everyone it's dysfunctional but i look at
Speaker 4these two options concepcion and boston and i say is there a potential for one of them to see 100 and 20 targets in year one and like concepcion is the one that commands it and we'll get the touches to be able to do it i don't really know how fannin factors in like how does the target pie get passed around but when i'm looking at the hype through preseason it's been the steady drumbeat for boston and for me it's been like i just think concepcion's built better for the nfl to see more targets so right now they are very close if you're looking at different startup rankings for wide i mean they're very close both top 36 wide receivers as startup picks would you still
Speaker 3rather have concepcion than boston i yeah i would i know that the boston hype has been very strong is it as of late but i think concepcion is just the i think he's the better player for today's nfl boston is boston's hard because you've been with the show kind of my my uh analysis on on boston was this profile flames out so much in the nfl and yet i was very drawn and i was like i really like him i'm gonna
Speaker 4go i loved his film for a player that i normally would not like the size yes jump yeah okay so
Speaker 3like this show was we were hiring on boston of like and guys who are in a very similar archetype of him we've totally faded there was just something about the game that was that really drew us into the player even even with all that i'm just more optimistic about him for
Speaker 4the future but i would still take casey yeah the starting x wide receiver is a sexy position to to label a rookie to say hey you can be this player for us and then there's the other players who last year was like dante thornton who was the sacrificial x as matt matt harman always talks about on the outside the digital world and i think concepcion is the better player for this nothing and was the jump ball guy and it didn't really matter i think boston's different than that i just think long-term concepcion can be i don't know like one of the in the family of odell beckhams and uh like a like a garrett yeah like a garrett wilson the name that i threw out in his comps was like emmanuel sanders like someone that command targets play on the outside and is smaller but like i feel like this dude's just gonna get so many touches the the outside really
Speaker 3matters uh like you can't just be a slot player we want you to move all over the place so i think that that that is unknown at this point of will that will he succeed on the outside because if if he does end up being completely a slot only player then there's a chance that boston passes
Speaker 4him all right i have a quick one here this is about the cardinals backfield because i did get a report today from mike lafleur he confirmed that surgery is not on the table and he's not well no he won't need it for jeremiah love and his ankle which was we were all like oh man i did not know that that was uh yeah something we were talking about why they because they they don't
Speaker 3have to give full information right now and they're being very cagey like they haven't said high ankle at least to my knowledge but they have laid out a bread mister a mystery of breadcrumbs where we're all like so it's a high ankle like you're not going to be able to get a high ankle you idiots gave the number three overall running back pick 14 touches in a meaningless game like i'm i'm all for pre-season and you look go through go through every yeah i mean he's gonna be a great player but it's like go through everything the warm-ups like get all the feelings that you know go through these motions learn what it's like learn what it feels like to get ready for an nfl game go out there and do it and you're not going to be able to get a high ankle out there have them run some steps get him some touches but it's like jonah coleman you had sean payton was asked like oh why did you pull jonah coleman out so quick he was looking good and he's like yeah he did look good and he was looking good in practice i don't need to see anything more what do you need to see from jeremiah love that you're going to give him all the touches and i'm bringing this up because we've said for fantasy football the only thing that gets in jeremiah's love jeremiah love's way is the idiocy of the arizona cardinals franchise doing stupid things because because drafting him to build a team in my opinion was truly stupid i'm not saying he's like he might be the best player in the draft but if you're building a team you have there's other positions that you have to take care of unfortunately but then to do that and they'll be like hmm let's get this let's get him 14 touches in a pre-season game and then you're going to be like oh my god i'm going to be like oh my god i'm going to be like and then look fluky high ankle injury it's just oh man they're so dumb the cardinals are really
Speaker 4hard when you look at last year's stats and then try to work them into what this team is this year with the new that's impossible it's impossible one of the stats that blew my mind and it well it makes sense looking back but like they tied the rams for the most red zone dropbacks per game in the entire league so like this team was bad and yet they kept having dropbacks in a meaningful part of the ends or part of the field and i'm thinking about the running game and that when it comes to red zone snaps how many snaps is tyler algier going to see in the first month how much is he going to see for later on is he going to have flex worthy week like let's say jeremiah
Speaker 3love doesn't play week one are you flexing tyler algier uh i don't remember the match up off the
Speaker 4top of my head i can look it up right now i'll tell you what they are not favored no that part i could have told you okay i'm looking at their schedule for the first month of season they are at the chargers okay they are against seattle against san francisco at san francisco and at the giants i mean touch touchdown dogs in all four
Speaker 3you know considering the makeup of your team if jeremiah love is actually out algeria is going to see a ton of work and he's a very capable player i like tyler tyler i remember his rookie
Speaker 4year you were like guys i think this guy's actually kind of good for the nfl i think he's
Speaker 3good he's not jeremiah love good but like as of right now trey benson's not doing team practices james connor's name has barely been mentioned or he's still on the team as i tyler algeria will get the ball so many times if jeremiah love misses so based off of pure volume he's definitely worth
Speaker 4a flex or would be yeah all right let's talk jonathan brooks real quick we brought him up the main show as well when chuba hubble was out he played seven of nine snaps with the starters trevor achan did come in for a couple third down snaps but do you feel like brooks is going to eventually have his way where he is like a three down guy for their team or is it just going to be split we're frustrated and we had this rise for brooks all over the summer and it just ended up being a total timeshare man i don't
Speaker 3i don't know how to feel about jonathan brooks i know i i guess i can like work backwards of i'm out on chuba this year yeah same here so it's like well okay so that should at least push you slightly towards jonathan brooks i didn't like the prospect nearly as much as everybody else did not saying i'm right and not saying i'm wrong is that we don't know we have no idea in year three is jonathan brooks a a good football player we have no clue so i mean when you draft a running is this is rational coaching stuff man i'm like he was drafted in the second round with a torn acl at the time of being drafted you have to have a plan you have to have a plan that he's going to be featured but teams do stupid crap all the time
Speaker 4i think it's hard to like in redraft his price is now being baked in as a breakout in dynasty he's a free square like hopefully you did not trade based on the hype of a player who has barely been on the field throughout his career over this offseason like that was the worst time to trade for him is in the last month or two if you wanted to trade him away and gain something he just seems like a hold at this point yeah like over the offseason i was
Speaker 3i feel like i would go back and forth of do i take a a 27 second for jonathan brooks and it's like that's not bad that's not bad because like what where are you with your probability of because i at this point i would say the odds are against jonathan brooks really making it happen i like again we're working in the gray zone if it's not a possibility i just think the odds are against him
Speaker 4the team situation their underdogs and three of their first four the offensive line at least has a lot of juice behind it a lot of money behind it but then it's bryce young i just feel like you're working against a bunch of things that if you got a top 24 season you should be counting your blessings like i i'm just not expecting anything more than that gotcha he will just always have he was the first running back taken as a part of his bio yeah from that draft that's like what pulls him up and what he could be
Speaker 3yeah and it's like but reminder that was a weak running back class it was he was in the second and then trey benson in the third and i think that was the only quorum and uh and lloyd and that was
Speaker 4oh yeah yeah yeah for day two day one and day two but both quorum and lloyd were third rounders as
Speaker 3well right correct yeah so we love to say day two for our running backs but there's a big difference between a second rounder and a third rounder all right let's take a quick break and we'll be right
Speaker 4back speaking of third round running backs we talked about marshawn lloyd last week as a certifiable nasty boy and it made me happy that his adp was rising this week maybe happy that terence ferguson's right adp was rising but i'm not really expecting anything it is worth noting that marshawn lloyd played all nine snaps with jordan love with josh jacobs out so that's a good thing i'm not really expecting anything but i'm not really expecting anything but the context i i mean there's nobody else so like are you projecting him as i know you have seven touches in your career but like you're the clear two if you're looking for acquiring somebody's insurance back i i think he's and do you like him playing that way in dynasty like if you had josh jacobs are you trying to go after lloyd
Speaker 3yeah i think so i think so i i somehow you know like of so people talk about like how do you process and everything and you know like they bring up the idea of gut and you know god is very unscientific bubble but it's like i look at gut feelings as like this is a result of years and years of input that i'm not not cognitively like sifting through all the thoughts like in in a in communication it's just like you know it you know what i mean of like you just it's just like subliminal almost of i've seen these things enough and man my gut and and guts aren't always right or wrong but it's like my gut feeling on jacobs this year is not good like the i know we scored a bajillion touchdowns but it's like he is he's older for a running back the amount of wear and tear on his body is it's a lot like josh jacobs has been in the nfl at a running as a running back as a as like a workhorse running back for a long time you get the henrys you get the mcafree's that they can hold up but to me he just he looks like a guy who's losing a bit of it and we don't know lloyd might have juice the way at least he's being talked about right now so i don't know i'm just i think i'm overall i don't have jacobs ranked catastrophically low or anything like that but when i'm drafting i'm fading him
Speaker 4last week we brought up the amount of touches through his first seven years it's like only zeke touched the ball more among running backs over the last 15 years at this stage in their career so the rare wear and tear is there i think you can get him for like a third
Speaker 3if you if you're josh jacobs i would you're talking lloyd yes yeah i would goodness i would i would sprint to the podium i think that's the type of deal i would want to do
Speaker 4as a throw-in you know to kind of like talk through the manager that way as opposed to i'm trying to solely go after marshawn lloyd at this point but i do feel like there's gonna be a point i hate bringing up the same thing about the gut too but it's like oh man we've done this long enough to kind of know like these running backs yeah they have these seasons where they just it just falls apart and it's done and i know there's like i'm looking at zeke right now
Speaker 3of it was winning that new england season oh yeah yeah but i mean it was before that it was uh his last year as a cowboy uh 230 attempts for 876 yards so that's 3.8 a clip he still finished okay as a uh because he had 12 rushing touchdowns but it's like
Speaker 4it was over i want to say that was the pollard year that pollard like crushed efficiency wise and then the next year is when they gave pollard all the touches by himself
Speaker 32022 and yep you are correct yeah it and it's hard to say historically here's a player with
Speaker 4seven touches and here's what they're gonna do but in dynasty i'm willing to make that trade if you want to back them up all right a couple more quick ones here about preseason and this one's just fun because we need we need moments in dynasty we need moments for the show we're we're happy and our boy jack besh caught a touchdown so let's throw that out there
Speaker 3i think i would be happier if we just let jack besh go just just like we actually like jack this
Speaker 4thing and just let him go off the it's not happening he didn't play i'm giving you the stats right here he didn't play in the 12 personnel snaps it was tucker jalen naylor it's not good i've i've only seen i've only seen good i brought up the raiders mostly to say jack besh's name but also that mendoza's look really good so far in the limited work and that if they're starting wide receivers or tucker and naylor it just it's it's basically just like i only have good things to say about brock bowers i don't have good things to say about the receivers so do you care at all about trey tucker or jaylen naylor nope okay good i don't care either let's go to the giants who just signed naji harris because tyron tracy apparently doesn't care about their franchise quarterback and they hate him they hate him but they rotated their backs and that's the bigger question i have is scataboo saw five snaps tracy seven singletary two scataboo didn't play any of the third down snaps I don't know if I care about that or not.
Speaker 3No, I mean, I think we've talked about things long enough in fantasy that the amount of, the percentage of running back points that come on third down, they're minimal. It's a nice padding, you know, I guess because when you say third down, you're also implying, well, this is their, if they're in garbage time, then this will be the running back that's on the field. Or if they're in the two-minute drill, which, I mean, a two-minute drill when you see, when you're running back just, like all the wide receivers are sprinting and your running back just goes eight yards down the field for the check down and you get three in a row, you're just like, yeah.
Speaker 4Those are the Jarek McKinnon points those couple years with KC.
Speaker 3Oh, dude, those feel so good.
Speaker 4Yeah, just to give you some numbers, 90% of opportunities and 80% of receiving fantasy points occur on early downs.
Speaker 3Yeah, so I'm not. I'm not worried about how they split up the stuff. I'm very, I'm interested in what's going on with this Najee signing. I don't know. It's just, you know, it could be nothing, but honestly, I think it's like the sniff test. Like something's a little, a little funky. It could be completely that one play by Tracy, which it's hard to blame Harbaugh.
Speaker 4There's something stanky in New York, and you already, we know what it is.
Speaker 3Wow, yes, yes. We know, we know who is responsible for this thing, but Najee may not have anything else left to give, but he's gigantic, and he's, to my knowledge, has been a very successful pass protector in his career. So it's like if they feel, if they don't feel strong enough about the other three guys to be doing that correctly, you might see more Najee. All right. So this, the Najee situation is I'm just going to wait and see. I'm not going to make any real reactions, no adjustments to projections at this time, but it's now a variable that you got to pay attention to.
Speaker 4I just, I've kind of been nervous. You're talking about gut stuff. I've just been nervous the entire offseason with Scataboo. It's injury stuff, it's play style, all those things. It's the draft capital. It's the regime change. It's the offense. And yet in Dynasty, he's seen, he's seen as a top 20 back in startups. If I was doing a startup draft today, I could not draft him there. And I'll give you some other names.
Speaker 3I would say top 20 is not a, I mean, you got to what other 12 other starting running back. So it's just, who would you have, who would you be drafting in Dynasty above Scat right now?
Speaker 4Would you rather have Javante Williams with a contract extension or Cam Scataboo? Oh man. Like, and it's funny because at this point in the season, I know that the, the preseason vibes and everything else is adding to it. But if I was doing a startup draft today in mid August and I'm going into my season, like, Hey, my season is starting a week or a couple of weeks from now, I would take Javante.
Speaker 3I, I think the, the sensible thing would be to go Javante.
Speaker 4What about Tootin?
Speaker 5Oh,
Speaker 4these are names that are going after him, by the way, I'm giving names that are going after him.
Speaker 3Tootin, Tootin and Scat aren't that different than each other to me, other than Scataboo had the production. He had the, he had true success, but they're both fourth rounders. The, the, the opportunity for them to get usurped quickly is there for both of them. Man, I think I'll take Scataboo over Tootin.
Speaker 4All right. A couple more names. Travis HN Jr. Also got an extension, a little bit older. Yeah. I would take,
Speaker 3I'd take him. Okay.
Speaker 4Last one. This one's really tough.
Speaker 5This is when they stared at it. Nice. Scataboo or Bucky. Bucky. I, I'm,
Speaker 4I'm the pendulum has swung in my mind. Oh, over the last three or four weeks. Too far. We've gone, we've buried Bucky too much.
Speaker 3Yes. And I agree.
Speaker 4And being, him being hurt. So I kind of like that, but it just, it scares me for a player that I know is talented and I know scores fantasy points. That's what I always hear from Jason in the back of my mind. Like this guy scores fantasy points the way that we want them to be scored in the game we play. And yet there's so many variables here with this team. And, and like, yes, we, Betts and I took the under on the giants really early in the off season. Their wind total, their wind total, their wind total was the most bet over of any team in April.
Speaker 3Because they're the, they're the sexy team, man. They're fun. Wait, like that Thursday night, the Thursday night when they upset the Eagles and it was dart and scataboo, it was, it was electric television. You know, I get, you went to bed just feeling great. You woke up like, man, that Eagles game. So it, I totally get the letting the emotion and the sentiment overdo things for you. We all do that. But yeah, that seven and a half. Yeah.
Speaker 4Yeah. We took the under really quickly. And I, there's things that the bottom could fall out with this team defense though, could rescue them. Last team. I want to bring up here in the, uh, talking about preseason, the commander's running game. Katron Allen got 23 carries, which kind of tells you where they, where he's at in the depth chart. JCM Rashad white didn't play. So it feels like those are the one to Jerome Ford played five snaps. He's probably not even going to make the team. So with JCM and Rashad white, a player that we've universally not liked for a long time. Is there any move that you can make in dynasty with JCM? Because we've gone through it all of what last year was and the hype to then now it feels kind of tame. And yet in redraft circles, I think he's going to continue to rise in dynasty. Are you making any moves with him?
Speaker 3No. Cause I think the, like, we have, you have the hype fatigue of last year of the people who are going to get excited for bill got super excited. Like it was unhealthy. Well, what was happening last year? And I think it's unhealthy of the bounce back of this year where I think if like, if I have bill, the trade window is not right now. I, I believe Washington's going to try to make him the guy and we'll, will he succeed? That's TBD, but they're going to, I think they're going to give it a go of which you just hope in those first three to four games that, that he rips off of a game. You know, like he has a week where we're doing studs and duds and you're like, there he is. There's bill, bill, Ja'Cory Krosky merit. And then if you want to cash out, I get it. I, but that's the time I'm not doing it right now.
Speaker 4Their schedule. The first six weeks is juicy when it comes to game totals. And I know it's, it's early on things will change, but like they have four games at 48 or over, which is like some of the most in the league. They're going to be a high scoring environments. Like I really liked the team and how it sets up for him. And I hope he sees more third down work. I went through the tasks today. I'm trying to figure out what he did on third down last year. And he technically did not run a route. He was on the field for third down pass plays. I think four times. And they were like Debo screens or like, like a deep shot to trail on that. He didn't run a route. He just kind of stood there. And then another one that got like overturned. So like technically he didn't run a third down route. Wow. So funny player trying to figure out what he is. And also what a world where like, he was one of my nasty boys last year. And then by the end of the August, I was rooting against him because he got too popular. And now I'm rooting for him. It was full. It was full Damian Pierce for you. Oh, Damian Pierce never existed for me. Never existed. Never was in the league. Not my player pool. Never would drop that guy. He's one of the few players that like, I just held a grudge and I stayed with it.
Speaker 3It was so weird that you hated him so much.
Speaker 4I just, I did hate that. So many people loved him and I thought he was meh as a prospect.
Speaker 3And yet he had a very successful rookie year.
Speaker 4Yes, but he was, he was like a fifth round pick and redraft.
Speaker 3Yeah, but 220 for 939 yards in 13 games.
Speaker 4I should probably 30 catches that he was okay for a minute. It is what it is. That's going to do it for this week's episode. We will be back next week. Summary:

FAQs

The hosts are Borg, Betts, and a Baller, with Mike and Kyle appearing in this episode.

Betts chose to spend time with his family in August, which is the busiest part of the fantasy football year.

Jordan Tyson's injury is highlighted as the most painful, as the hosts had high hopes for him and Chris Olave this season.

The hosts discuss how rookie wide receivers typically start slow, with data showing they have low snap counts and targets in the first six weeks.

Among 40 such receivers over the last 20 years, Xavier Worthy ranks dead last in PPR points per game, receiving yards per game, and yards per target.

The hosts advise not to trade Cyrus Allen away for a low offer, as his value is low now and could increase later in the season.
