Preseason AP Poll Rankings Reaction

And I get into a bit of trouble along the way. I'd say probably start bones mashing, but those are more to make you look more defined. They say it works. I don't know. And I just knocked on the door, Jesse, it was a career, he dropped off the AP poll, AP poll reaction, proudly presented here by Ram, nothing stops college football, nothing stops for Ram. There it is. Very fitting by the way that Bill Drove, a red Ram in Twister and was engaged to Melissa, who at some point in Twister looked at him and said, I'm leaving you and I'm not even that upset. What does that mean? I looked at the AP rankings. I do have some issues here, but unlike last year, I'm not all that upset. So Jesse, what does this mean? First off, my theory on the AP in general, pre-season rankings in general, these are a good thing. It's a fun thing. It's not worth getting worked up about. It's also not worth marrying. So if you're an AP voter or if you're just doing good old fashioned rankings for fun, that's okay. Just don't get married to him. Right? I'm in very light pencil. Keep your pencil on a swivel. I used to always say about pre-season rankings. It can be way off base. That's okay. It's college football. If it were predictable, it would be boring. Also, I've never been a general believer that where you ended last year has to carry over. So like with Indiana, for example, they won the national title last year. I've never blindly been a believer that last year's national champ has to be this year's pre-season number one. Having said that, I think you're insane if you've got Indiana at number six. I've lived this life, okay. You guys haven't been in the trenches I've been in with Indiana. I suffer from what doctors would medically describe as CDS, which is a signety doubters syndrome. I was there this time a year ago. There's the evidence. I was there. I had to own it on my own show. Had to throw on the clown nose. Very, very notably, very well documented, Oh, and five record picking against Indiana last year. So I don't know who I'd put number six. It wouldn't be Indiana. And here's what's very interesting. If we dive into the numbers here about where Indiana is, their number six, however, what you don't see on the graphic is they got the third most first place votes of any team. Ohio State got a bunch of them, Oregon did, Notre Dame got some. But Indiana had the third most first place votes yet their number six, which Jesse, if I'm not mistaken, leads me to believe there are people out there walking amongst us with the ability to vote in the AP poll who ranked Indiana lower than six. There has to be a number of you who voted them below six. And to them, I'm asking this as much as I don't believe last year has to blindly carry over to this year. What is it you've definitively seen or heard or thought conjured imagined? If you will about Georgia or Notre Dame or Oregon or Texas, whoever that puts them that far above and beyond Indiana in your mind. And if you have an answer, then I would ask you to base that or maybe test that against the reasons that you perhaps doubted Indiana at various points last year ask how that logic worked out for you. I know that's why I'm removing myself. I don't endorse this and then ask if it's really worth putting them down here. Don't do this to yourselves. It's not too late. Don't set yourselves up for this. I went through it. I came out on the other side. I'm warning you. This right here is a terrible, terrible idea. Number two, I don't know when the last time what I'm about to say would have happened was, but there are no SEC teams with first place votes in the preseason AP poll, which I thought was illegal for the better part of my youth and young adulthood. But apparently, even Texas at number five, Jesse, even Georgia at number three, no first place votes. And yet right on cue, there's the anti SEC bias, but then the SEC bias, all baked in in one poll is just like the JP poll. It's got all of it baked in because as much as I tell you, no SEC team got a first place vote, seven of the top 13 teams are from the SEC. Not to me, that tracks because I think that's the overall makeup of the landscape of college football right now. I'm not that upset about it. I'm not upset at all. I would just draw your attention to number 13, Alabama. Let's say, for example, and I know this is not going to happen, but let's say, for example, the entire season played out exactly like this. First time in history, the AP voters got it exactly right. They predicted the exact final order of the SEC team or SEC teams in the AP poll. How would we describe that season for Alabama? If this is all correct, did Alabama have a top 15 year, or did Alabama barely finish in the top half of the SEC? How would we describe that because I know when we follow recruiting rankings, sometimes that's the way it stacks up in the SEC. You'll have some team 14 or 13th in the country, but they're like seventh or eighth in the conference and the fan base is none too pleased. Obviously, there's so much head to head, especially with a nine game league schedule that realistically it can't shake out this way. Someone's going to have to bite the bullet. Someone's going to have to take the losses. Let's just consider these tears for a second because really in the SEC and the big tenets like this, but in the SEC, you've got tier one, Georgia, Texas. No breaking news there. Tier two, we kind of understood it would be some combo of A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama. That's the order that it ends up falling in. Then the third tier, if you want to call it that in the SEC, would start with Tennessee at 20 and then you have Missouri at 25 and you've got Florida just on the outside looking in unranked. It's not going to fall like that. I think the big question in both of the big two conferences is when the tears start to muddy themselves. Well, first off, do they muddy themselves and then presumably the answer is yes, where does the muddying begin? Is Oregon just not this good? Is Washington way better? Like if you look at the big ten because these tears are very clearly defined in the big ten. And again, this is not a shot. This is kind of how a lot of people had mapped it out for a few months. We've been talking about this stuff since the national championship game, basically. But Ohio State one, Oregon two, egregiously Indiana six and then you got to make room for the SEC's second tier, and then following the SEC's second tier, you got the big ten second tier, 14 USC, 16 Michigan, 17 Washington, 18 Penn State. They got Penn State coming to Seattle They got Indiana coming to Seattle and they play Oregon So there is a world where Washington uses that to thrust themselves into the playoff There's another world where maybe Washington doesn't quite make the playoff But they're the reason you don't make the playoff either way jetfish Who can be like a the ultimate chaos agent in college football this year he starts at number 17 How about the teams just outside the top 25 so they're not pictured on the graphic here But we were talking about Clemson last week How the coaches pole had a number 23 how the JP pole had him 20 and we'll talk about that later I'm not on this particular segment mind you but Clemson's 26 Florida 27 Boise 28 you got Arizona and TCU rounding out the top 30 Clemson at 26 and South Carolina at 32 for the record I want you to imagine this with me for a second. What if those are right? What if those are proper correct rankings If Clemson's the 26th best team in the country this year They have several losses if South Carolina's the 32nd best team in the country this year They have several losses keep Clemson up for a second there so What does that mean if Clemson's the 26th best team in the country they lose week one That game in week four is no joke going to Cal they lose in week five Virginia Tech could push him in week seven Uh, and if you're the 26th best team in the country in this day and age that means I can't just assume anything Even when you go to Florida State Syracuse Georgia Tech Duke South Carolina end of the year Could be four losses there or more for Clemson but throw up South Carolina for just a second This is one where rubber really meet true So again, this is not the way the real world works. I just want to do this for the sake of argument for a second The AP has South Carolina at number 32 in the preseason Let's just say they're right and let's say the season plays out exactly as the AP voters Release the preseason rankings if South Carolina is the 32nd best team in the country That means they play seven teams ranked higher than them And if every game just went the way it's supposed to go on paper And they finished five and seven I think we all understand that's not good enough And it's kind of funny. That's where strength of schedule That's where the quality and caliber of opponent you play really enters the equation because there's some other teams in here You know that maybe ranked in the 25 to 35 range and only face two or three teams ranked ahead of them You don't get that benefit if you are in the SEC and in most cases in the big 10 also Boise plays organ And Boise is just on the outside looking in here. Boise is clearly the highest ranked group of six. They're at 28 And I know that people will look past that game. They go on the road to organ for a week one I wouldn't advise that organ's gonna be three touchdowns some on favorite However, I wouldn't advise looking past that and if you think about the two highest ranked group of six teams Boise at 28 navy at 31 What are they having common? They both play top five opponents Boise at organ but also navy plays Notre Dame So if it gets down to it at the end of the year and this is mainly for the you are what your record says you are crab If it comes down to a one-loss Boise or or hey, maybe it's even a two-loss Boise Maybe they lose to organ and lose one regular season game Still win their conference Maybe navy loses to Notre Dame and they lose one other regular season game. How do they get judged against undefeated G 16s that play nobody Just something to keep in mind. I think by far the sneakiest early season game Regardless of AP poll but especially when you consider the AP poll is week three Week three in college football Everyone's attention is gonna be on Oxford, Mississippi Rightfully so man. We've got number 11 going on the road to face number nine. It's Lane Kiffin facing his old team You know the headline there. You know what happens the night before in Lubbock, Texas number 23 Houston Goes in there to face number 12 Texas tech. It'll probably be the first time most of America watches Texas tech this year It'll certainly be the first time you watch Houston this year There a lot of a lot of really quiet but audible noise coming out of Houston and Willie Fritz and kind of Wegman down there at QB Another year into the system Could they mount a charge and if you get Texas tech this year you kind of want to get them early when they're still figuring things out I want to repeat As sacrilegious as it is in the state of Texas that game is scheduled for Friday night So just keep an eye on that week three. You got Florida at Auburn that week They finished just on the outside of this but obviously you've got a main event headline game It's not a one match card. You know, it's not Armageddon 2000 for example Which I was an attendance for in Birmingham, Alabama So there's nothing terribly egregious here. I just I pray for all of you who somehow found it in yourselves to vote Indiana lower than six because some of you have them apparently lower than six. I can't wait to see how that shook out.
