Just waiting a few minutes to say Matt Berton is enough for me. We'll talk about Matt Berton's game. Let's see B Damon. There we go. I mean, it might be. It's the best chance for Boston. That's right. [Laughs] I'm not a cop. I'll say what though? I copped this Knight's Cowboys game. It was all right. It exceeded all of my expectations for these two teams as the Knights ran out 28 to 18 winners. Yeah. I've really enjoyed this game as well. It was the kind of loose, fancy, free footy that I like to see in the opening to the season. Clearly two teams. The Knights, I thought, they have some new paths to do this year and some of those paths are really, really big. I actually just, so they're a work in progress. I thought the cows were just like almost exactly like they were last year. I mean, it didn't sense much of a change. I kind of felt like, I know he came back on, but one drink water banged his ribs. It just started to look really hard for the cows to make the most of what fuel position they could get. You know? And when he came back on and they were still pretty hampered, but I'm sorry, he was still pretty hampered. And I really think that they're just kind of like, it just sort of took the spark out of him. I know Deep was able to set up a trial. Clifford was able to set up that good trial for Tau Lunghi, but drink water is the machine. Drink water is the thing that makes this cowboy machine go. And he's not there at his best to kind of grinds to a halt. Did you avoid using he's the straw that stirs the drink just then because that's his name? No, you like straw that stirs the drink. That's one of yours. It is. Anyway, but like, yeah, it's funny. Like, both teams losing sort of like one of their key guys to make big plays in the in the first half an hour. This game played a sharp leaving as well, not coming back. I'm like, drink water. But yeah, I love the first five minutes of this game when we got three bunker referrals before we got any tries. Is it back? We got like one blatantly clear challenge that how did the ref miss it, which was the one the night's one, then the no try, which I thought a very good life call by Ashley Klein. I was surprised. The bunker said, oh, there's no evidence. I thought he clearly lost the ball. And then the read money desperate challenge for an obvious knockoff. We got the full gamut in the open five minutes. We really did. We know the Americans love stoppages and everybody. Everybody loves tedious. If you judge, if you judge, and pads on read money just then and not only that had Ashley Klein face a camera and announced the decision, oh, they would have been in hundreds more would have tuned into Fox Sports 9 or whatever channel it was on. If they got worth it, there were helmets, pads and a referee making everything about himself. I thought Sharp was absolutely crack a jack in that 20 minutes. I was happy. Thankfully, it's not a major knee injury, but man, he was looking great. He looked really good. I'd sort of said that I would have preferred them to go with Smith Brown in the house, but I can understand having seen how Sharp was when he was out there with Brown. I can kind of understand what I was just like. Well, I think they're just like, these are the two best guys. So let's just get them on the field and hope it works out. Sharp is the kind of guy who can turn a contest into a new castle win. Like he did going over drink water to score that to score that. Try, there was another one that he come close to scoring off that loose ball. The shape that Newcastle were using was really interesting and not at all what I expected from them. So they kind of had Sharp and then Smith as the half on the left side. They had Brown as the half on the right side, but they had Ponga playing a lot of first receiver and playing first receiver on both sides of the field and doing a lot of the kicking, Ponga kicked the ball more than any other night's play him and Brown kind of split it. But Ponga did more of it. It was almost more like Ponga was playing half back than anything else. And I've been of railed for years with the nights about how they would do that with Ponga too much, you know what I mean? They'd get him in first receiver instead of out the back where he can create. They've got him in the middle of the field, banging bodies which I just don't think really suits his game. But there were moments where that shape was really effective for them on the the the Dom Youngtry for example Ponga's first receiver goes to the line and they execute the sweep really, really well. Having said that, the nights moment that would have me most excited if I was if I was another cast dream is the best try, right? Whereas the nice offload from Brazil to create a little bit of Ruck's beat. And then Smith goes to the line and he hits Ponga on the inside and you've just got two of your creative pull. You got one of your creative players linking with another one in in a sort of broken field situation. Like that is when you cast will going to be most effective and it ends up with the try to best. Now it's hard to manufacture those sorts of situations because the kid did kind of come off a broken, a broken thing like Miku and had the ball first and he slipped over and I thought the play was dead but then Fris makes something of it like you can't that's something that just goes out has to happen in the course of the game. You can't just say to Fris, okay, Fris you're going to offload and then we're going to do this on the back of it. But I like that stuff for the nights and I feel like the more that they can, the more that they can apply that to their game, the more dangerous they're going to be because while the parts of sharp brown gag I best Ponga and all of that, it's probably not fit together or like placed in the spots where I would like it but they are all talented guys, you know what I mean. And maybe it's as simple as just getting them together. You don't need to worry about structures and all of that. Just get Ponga and Smith or Ponga and Brown or any combination of just get them passing the ball to one another and goods might be able to happen. Yeah, it's that little five minute period that had at the start of the second half of this quarter. It's really showed us a glimpse of what this team can be and going back to what Harry talked about on the preview a few weeks ago about their forward pack. Look, McEwan looked nice early, faded a little bit but then in his stead like Lucas had some great touches on both sides of the ball. There was a great tricever he had just before Braden Burns killed Cale and Ponga. I can't remember who it was on. And then there was, you know, so I feel you look good. Your man Tramuni scored a try and was running pretty hard. And yeah, this was there were periods of this game where it looked like the best case scenario for Newcastle. For the Cowboys. I mean, there was, you are right in the sense that they looked so much like last year and it was probably the sixth or seventh time I saw Tom did and Kravakross the field to know about that I kind of made the same realization yesterday they attacked before. Lukey scores that try is so static and just so poor. And it really, the tries they do score really come down to sort of like a bit of individual of words from Sam McAdry who will never throw pass that good again. Well, you know what? Maybe he will. We joke. Maybe on our Cowboys friend. I love him. Like we had the joke. Was there anything that Todd Peyton thinks Sam McIntire can't do? And maybe there is nothing Sam McIntire can't do. He could throw no. It was a quick pass for Troy. That was absolutely sick. And it was and the Lukey try comes because the traders for whatever reason thought Fletcher shot was sweet to come on the field and the Cowboys went, oh that guy can't move. We should run at that guy. Oh, we scored. What a great idea. And then shot immediately got taken off the field. So like, save for those two moments of brilliance. Like it really was quite laborious for the Cowboys at times. And then this is why it's this is what this I don't really know where they go from here because you can't make any excuses. Like yes, drink water leaves a fill for the wild comes back on. But he was on the field for a lot of this game and and didn't again is a guy that isn't it was great knowledge and last year, but this is this is more of the same thing the club. But there was one set they had to write the four half time where. Drink water shake to kick no one fell for it didn't run across the left hand side of the field. No one, no one bought on the dummy. And then the set kind of just ended and I was like, well, what's the point of this? But they're really just doing exactly the same stuff that they were doing last year. And take a look at Croats of the Knights because there was some excellent sort of defense from them in the last minutes that first half when the Cowboys didn't have a lot of ball. And we're all over the momentum index, by the way. But the momentum index. Okay, no, all right. Can we do this now? Because I have to no, no, no, no, no, no, no, save it. Save it. Finish with the cows and then we'll. Yeah, sorry. But like there was just so much of the stuff that we saw them do, which was just like hope to incorporate tricks to guys and sets up and makes a break or hope that Tom did and Jinx is way through the line. And that Tom did not, that doesn't, that doesn't have been happening with the consistency that you need something like that to happen at. One period, one time when I was really happy with them was just before the second try, where Perju was at full bat because drink water was off the field. He makes a great return. And then Braden burns off the back of that makes like a 25 made of dummy hard carry. And they, they flip the field completely in those two players and say, yes, fast direct at playing. Perju's a guy who still can't pass by the way, which was hilarious. He just absolutely feels it's so good with ball and hand and I just wonder like I hated it when he was in the halves last year, but I also. I don't know what their attack can do to change things because they just run it back what they were doing last year and it was. I think this game shows the reliance that they have on Drinkwater. Deerden is the far more decorated player, but Drinkwater is, if he's not creating, then the creation doesn't really happen. And I know he came back on, but he was pretty clearly hampered. And that just shows how much they do rely on him. I said the words aloud with about 20 to go, Jake Clifford's got to win this for them. And like, I am the Jake Clifford believer. That's part of the part of the game. - You say that in your sleep. You just like to do that. - I do. - You're a personal like, - Nick. - Wait, come, you're dreaming about Jake Clifford again. (laughing) - I thought he was good like the kick for the time. He was really good. But that's kind of where it was. It wasn't happening for Deerden. Like on Deerden's bad days, he can look a bit one trick. And it's a really good trick, but it can be a bit of a one trick. If nothing else is working. Though your man Reed Marnie was doing way too much hot doggan. - He was scared. - You can put, but no, you compare it to a cross-lin, right? Who isn't as known as a creative player, but picked these spots really, really well. Like he kicked that 40-20 that. - That was great. - The kind of came out of nowhere. It was inch-perfect. He was engaging the markers really, really well. I think there was a bit of a less is more. Like this is the contrast between less is more. You know, I know Marnie can do a lot, but I thought he was trying to do a little bit too much and kind of just threw off the, threw off the table. - He did you a little bit. - He might have been, but like they didn't do enough. It was a kind of game. I think Marnie LT needed to do something to turn this game. And he has that there's one good kick he falls the drawback and the one towards the other game where he kicks it dead. So you get, you're right. You get the best of it. - Well, it's not just kicking. Like it's, it's, it's, it's, oh, - I know, but it's eagerly in the red zone. You know what I mean? Like, they just look, they just look, they just look, they looked quite disconnected. - I quite frankly don't think they're going to figure it out. Like this is, like I think our Cowboys' Gas Marks pessimism about them was very quickly justified in this game. So real quick, I don't, I'm going to shock you with this. So I don't hate the momentum tracker because it backs up what I think momentum is, which is something that can only be applied retroactively. The momentum tracker essentially just puts up like when a team has had good ball and when a team has achieved relative success in the game and the patches in which they've done it. The same tracker is used in like Premier League and stuff when I watch it like, and it's fine. It all it does is go back and tell it, give you an idea of like which team had more ball and more good possession and more attacks and more stuff. So I totally am fine with that. Obviously, there's a different story if the commentator goes, "Oh, look at the momentum tracker. Why are they taking the two?" Obviously, that's a different story, but that didn't happen. But what I did hate Nick. Now, I have a lot of respect for stats. My first job in sports media was in stats at Fox, like a long time ago now. But that try predicted thing might be the single dumbest thing. I have that the same. When it flashed up on the screen that the North Queensland Cowboys had an 89% chance of scoring a try, offers scrum feed 40 beaters out from the Newcastle line. I was flabbergasted because there's two ways you could interpret that, right? But each of them is equally insane. The first being that they have an 89% chance of score off that set, which is obviously wrong. If Team scored 90% of the time, they started a set in the opposite enough, games would end 100 to 94. And the second part of it is, if the Cowboys will be the next team to score 89% of the time, that's also extremely wrong. Because again, teams trade tries a lot. And no team scores at such a high frequency when they get the ball in good ball positions. And it was, I think there was one that flashed up late in the Dog's Dragon's game that said, like 90% bulldogs, 7% dragons, then hilariously, 3% no more tries. And that was it. But that was in like the 70th minute. I'm not joking. But that was in the 70th minute of the game. I forgot it. Get out there. But like, that's the thing. This game has had four tries in 70 minutes of footy. And they're going, well, the chance of they're not being any more tries is only 3%. What are you talking about? Yeah. Look, you don't need to be a stats genius to eyeball anything, saying basically, nothing on a rugby league field is a 90% chance of happening. Unless a guy has the ball in his hands and is running over the trial line with nobody around him, there is no other time in a rugby league game where someone is 90% chance to score a try. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. I hate it more than the harder in index. I hate it more than the momentum index. I hate it more than the MVP track of things that's about the buzzier. I hate it so much. It is the dumbest graphic I have ever seen. But it's got a red bull logo on it. So damn, if it doesn't make me 30. You can't say this at home list is, but he just stood in solution. Anyway, fuck me. Oh, man. Okay, so the momentum thing, when the first flashed up, I was like, this might be an old colleague of yours at Fox's idea of like an elaborate trail job on you personally, right? You and I have very differing opinions on the concept of momentum and even what momentum is and we can't go into it again. So I was kind of cackling for a second that there would just, that this would flash up all season and I knew it would shit you every time. But then the second time it came up, I noticed that it said powered by AI and I was like, they've done it. They've created a graphic that will equally infuriate you and me. Fantastic. Because I, I despise artificial intelligence. And I think people trying to shoehorn it into every aspect of their lives is like a unmistakable sign of incredible social decline. You won't believe it. The anti-technology guy doesn't like the thinking machines. - Yeah, but I think I agree with you on the AI guy. - And that, that tricecoring predictive stat, I will guarantee you that that's AI as well, you know? And it doesn't take into account like the context of the match. Like for example, the cows are in 90% chance of scoring. Drink water's ribs are busted, right? So he's not at 100%. - I'm a simulation, take that into account, I assume. - Oh, it doesn't, does it, does it now? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, fucking sure it doesn't. - It's got one more try in the entire game, by the way. 93% fuck off. - Yeah, so I don't know. I feel like, and this is happening in a lot of different industries because AI is a tech buzzword at the moment. I think a lot of industries are feeling the pressure to integrate it into their process somehow. Even though I think it adds, I think it actually demeans society to use AI for anything. And if you use it, I will think less of you as a person. So it's great, it's great that they're gonna shove this shit down our throat all season. It's great that the sport I've built my entire life around and that I will consume every single, I will consume copious amounts of every single weekend. We'll shove this thinking machine bullshit into my face. It's great, I'm really looking forward to it. - We're gonna move on 'cause our guest is coming on relatively soon. We stopped at the end of the game. But Tama Lolo thought looked very good and congratulations to you for a Friday, pick in Vegas, one nil already. - I mean, I thought the cows had the same problem where Tama Lolo was strong, but he can't carry the whole team anymore and the rest of the boys, they didn't quite have anyone that could go with him. I thought Mooney, even before the try, was quite good. And I liked that switch that they made with Frizz coming off the bench. I thought that just gave them a little bit better balance 'cause Frizz is still quite an effective middle four, even though he's getting a bit on himself. So the Nights want to really found something there. - Yeah, yeah, absolutely. - All right, Canabry 15, St. George, Aurora 14. - Well, the dragon's ripped off, say it. I know you want to. - Yeah, absolutely. - Yeah, I thought they got ripped off. - And it wasn't just shout out to the like, pervert on Reddit that made a seven minute video today of all the things Grant Atkins got wrong in this game, which is an incredible dedication to the crowd. - Oh, damn, yeah. - Seven minutes. But then again, to have a seven minute compilation video from a single game is quite something. - I thought, I thought Saints got a bit. Bad whistle throughout the match. And like that can just happen at some times. But I thought the strip ruling on catchment at the end. I don't really know what they're looking for when they look for a strip anymore 'cause it used to be you would have to see like a stripping motion with their hands. - Is the loose carrot just coming around the ball? - Probably, and now it's just kind of like, they hate overturning calls, so they kind of just make up language to justify whatever decision the referees already made. You know, like they have today when they come out and said the call wouldn't have been overturned. So if I was the dragon's fan, I would be feeling very, very hard done, but you know, even like, because like the dog score, the two trials, the Galvan pass to Preston is forward. - Yep. - Like it's just several meters forward. And that's just it, you know, like. - There was also the play where Karaz knocks it on to me very clearly near the dog's trial. And Convent Tracy takes off and makes like 65 meters. But like, there's just a lot of things on against dragons. This game to me, like the dogs won. They'll be happy, sure, like congratulations to them. This game to me was like for both teams. You took the ninth row of the only four of the teams this weekend that looked different to last. - I would agree, yeah. - Like the dogs especially, like I just don't know, like it's the same also, like they're great at making meters. They're great at making breaks when they give the ball to kick out or critter or Preston or someone else in the zedges. But it's doing things with the ball when they have good field position that has been their problem last year. Scoring the amount of points that they have field position in their physical dominance in game sticktats. That was their biggest problem last year. It's the biggest problem the year before that. And after this game, I think it's probably gonna be their biggest problem again this year. They end up getting 12 points and six of them were as you said, sorry, and sorry, 15. points, two tries, and they end up getting one of which was offered forward pass. So, like, just not great attack. And the dragons were tough though again, they're the same old dragons. We've come to expect. But I'm not worried, like the dragons fans aren't expecting much from this season. A lot of them are expecting their tend to be very, very bad. Dogs fans are thinking top four. Dogs fans are thinking, "Premise it." And this attack has to approve a lot to get there. Yeah. So some, the big concern I had over the dogs coming into this season was exactly what we're talking about. It was the halves and how they combine together. I know Burton is talented and I don't know Galvan is talented. I've never been that enamored with the fit with those two together. And I thought it really came through in this one with last tackle options. I thought their last tackle options were really poor throughout the game. And they weren't able to make the most of a lot of their field position as a result. It's a bit forgotten now because they went down and kicked the field goal with Crite and bit at the end of the first half of extra time. Remember they had that set it. They had a set that started inside the Saints 40. And you know, we're all thinking, okay, here's how they're going to set it up. Burton's kicked plenty of field goals in his career so I was Crite and they'll be able to, they should be able to nail this. And it just kind of went nowhere. It just kind of went nowhere. And I saw, I'm going to call them out because we're smashing them a lot today. But FoxBords.com had a story about it. It was a Galvin masterclass in Las Vegas. Yeah, what are you watching man? You know, like, you know, there's the past to Preston. I think it was forward. Whatever. It's whatever. It's a, you know, it's a tricist and it worked or whatever. But I thought it was quite notable that Galvin was not very visible down the back end of of regular time and then through extra time as well. In the nearly 10 minutes of extra time, he touches the ball. Let's see five times. It's not very many for half back. And like, you know, they've got, they've got the whole season to try and figure out this balance or whatever. Galvin is still a young player and, you know, can can can improve and a lot of things still. And they did win the game as well, you know, but you're right. This is a scene that's got really big aspirations. But it's clear they've still got some things that they got a that they got a sort of. I don't see it. They're changing. Well, the only way it can change is if these guys getting more time together, right? And that's the thing. That's the thing they have. That's the thing they have on their site, right? This is only around one. This combination can develop as the season goes on. But it needs developing. I think that's pretty clear. Like you're not getting you're not getting a great deal of playmaking out of your one and your own. Like your most creative players are your edgeback rowers instead of cry, which is fine because they're all great. And look, I'm aware people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones about all your most creative players, not big time players. But like, you know, come on boys. It's got some more points. The Crioton move for the Kira's Trial. Fantastic. I was thinking about it. I think that that Matt Gidley flick where the center draws the winger in and then puts his winger away. If I was doing like a top five most aesthetically pleasing things in rugby league, that really might be up there. We saw we saw we saw McIntyre do it and then we saw Crioton do it by Crioton doing it to Valhames. That's certainly not enough. Left foot step always gets me going. Yeah. I like a well struck left footed field goal. Yeah. Come down to Mascarona while struck a few for you. But yeah, that was pretty sweet. And then like for the dogs, it was it was real usual suspect stuff. You know, Kira was exceptional in Yardogen and with his offloads. You know, Kikia sort of came up as much more of a running threat than he has races. And his offloads were his offloads were off the chain as well. But Super Noah was really good in the middle of the field when he came on. He's really, I would say sort of he's been given a different role, a canary that he ever really had at the roosters where he was playing a lot of edge. But middle has really simplified things for him and he's really given them a lot of punch. But I kind of agree with you. I think it was it was a lot of of what we've what we saw late last year from the dogs. And for them to get where they want to get, they have got to they have got to change it up a little bit. Dragons on a rap Damian cook, but he played really well made. I didn't think he had 90 minutes in him. No, no, no, not 90, 90, 90 minutes. There was there was one play I highlighted right at the end of the game in Golden Point. It was that set with the dragon started when I think Fienaid dropped the ball behind himself and they started like a meter up and there are they're going to have to kick from like 20 meters out from there. He makes a dummy half run on I think full of tackle and gets 25 meters out of it and they end up getting a kick away from him. What much more reasonable was that saved Canada from being able to have basically a cheap shop to win the game. I know they end up winning it in the second half of each time anyway, but I thought that one play from Damian cook was really good. Oh, dude, he had a good game in general. They kick from the kick for the Guler try off his off his off his wrong foot. He can't put a foot wrong. Say something I meant to bring up on our dragons preview, but amid the doom and Guler, I forgot. The dragons led the league last year in close losses. So that's losses by six points or less. Well, throw another one on the ball. Yeah, but this game, this game also really fits that profile. I thought the dragons really struggled to move the ball up the field. I thought they'd be able to do it a little bit better than they did because the big back five that they've got, but they just didn't really end up happening. So that, Atkinson was left to kick them out of trouble as often as he could. Dan Atkinson would 900 kick meters. Almost almost the sexton one K. Yeah, yeah. I'd kick meters doesn't tell you anything other than he kicked my ball. I love when it's close to a thousand. Yeah, yeah. So a lot of the time he's just pumping it from his own 40 over and over and over. But they did a they did a they did a really good job of holding their line defensively for the most part. And I will say that as the game sort of got into that final quarter, I did feel like Saints had one big play in them and but just getting up there was really, really tough. But when they did get up there, they were able to execute really well and set to two got over Debbie Nontry. We always love that. So it's a funny it's a funny one for Saints man like because I would feel really aggrieved at at the circumstances of the loss. Yeah. And a little bit worried about the clear limitations of this roster. But also they showed an enormous amount of spirit to push the game to that point, you know. And like Toby Karchman was excellent in the middle of the field again. He was really good. But Harmey Selle had a had a really good stint as well read for a hundred meters in just over 35 minutes, which which is a which is a a very fair effort. So for Saints to be competitive this year, they're going to have to play above themselves like this every week. And that's not really sustainable. But it's clear they've got a they've got a they've got a bit of ticker about them. I would like to see Atkinson getting a little bit more of a creative situation rather than just having to hook it all the time. But like this game just didn't really allow for that. Yeah. Just on Karchman real quick, I listening to our good friend Brian and seeing on the magic sponge this morning. And he made the point that with ACLs, if you do them and you have enough time to actually get a full preseason into you, like after your recovery time's finished and you get that whole preseason to sort of get going, it can really help. And we saw that. Well, I thought I thought his brother. I thought Ryan was really good was really good to end it up playing 55 minutes off the bench. So it's pretty clear that they're going to lean on those the rule butcher boys through the season and and and more of it, I say the rule in Jaren Gong. Why would you need anything else exactly? Do anything else say about Vegas for we move on? I think that is about it. Would you would you agree with Peter Valle's that was the biggest year yet? What's going on with my man salad? Unfilled to the thought was great. Well Matt likes Damien Cook and Nick was impressed by young forwards who ran hard. And bring it to his right on day. No, it's good because because normally the editing process of cutting out all of all the fun guard slurs is quite laborious. That's true. You got the you got the you got the uncut shit man. How long? And it only got only got a verbally problematic right at the end. So it won't be that much editing for me today, which is good. All right. Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say as your team is slur worthy, but I'm not excited about the manly Ringer Seagal's show. Are you? Let's start there. You know what? I'd say they're not even worthy of a slur. That's that's how low I know that's how low I got him. No, no, I say every year my favourite preview is the Titans because I really love the melancholy ramblings of Chris Chard and I kind of want to take his place today because he was rather positive this time around. Yeah, I feel I mean obviously much like you too. I mean, I have grave concerns about mainly this year. Obviously, I don't think they're going to be playing finals football and probably the best thing manly can look forward to as fans is that it's going to bring to an end the sea-bold era and ideally, if that happens without winning a wooden spoon, that'll be tremendous. And I have a feeling I know where I don't want to pull the curtain back, but I think I can guess where Campo is going to have us landing at the end of the year. And I do think that manly leads in conversation for much of 2026. You've thrown out your fridge cut out. You're this man will win a premier shoot. Stick it on your back. You've thrown out your manly one of those. Well, we've recently moved house. Because you had a Brisbane one and you just coloured it in a manly jersey. It wasn't that hard. They're both brown and brownish. Colors are similar. Yeah, no, it didn't make the move to a two-litre unfortunate. Because I'm going to make you another one. Make me one of Willie Peters, if you can. Oh, okay. Jolly, you said you had grave concerns. The first bullet point in my notes here just says grave concerns. Yes, it's something that we share. What is your greatest concern? Cool. I'll be honest, my greatest concern is that I actually don't think manly, I don't know what their identity is going to be this year. And I don't think manly knows what their identity is going to be. And where the points are going to come from. For the past decade, so much of manly's identity installed of play has purely been dictated by how DCE kind of ran around the park. He was chaotic at times, but at his best he was brilliant. I mean, even at his worst he was probably on the 6 out of 10. But manly has pretty much been moulded in his image for the best part of a decade. He's gone. You might have noticed that in the off season. Jake has been the spiritual leader for exactly the same amount of time and he's very close to gone. It feels like no one knows what Tom is anymore. The ghost of Tom Travovici. He had like a three week period at the end where you go, oh, maybe there's a still a little spark, but for almost all of 2025. Even though he played a lot of footy, it didn't really feel like he was the ghost of Tom Travovici. It was avoiding contact. It just didn't give you the full turbo experience. Maybe a relatively injury free off season for him. Maybe there is some juice left in the legs, but yeah, the identity. How manly is going to play is kind of like even through good and bad years recently. They've had a, I would think, a relatively clear identity. A lot of it's just been around DCA or we've got really fast guys who do funky stuff in the outside backs, but yeah, I don't know. I don't see a toughness in the forward pack. I don't see points in the halves. There's a lot of concerns there. I think that's the biggest problem for me is you talk about identity. And a lot of teams don't have a clear identity. Manly for me have had one for the last few years, which is just like, here's these two guys that play foolback and halfback. They touch the ball 500 times each and when they do some cool shit happens and then maybe they get the ball to one of the really fast guys who hangs out on the wing and they score some tries. And you know what, that was pretty good. It was pretty fun to watch for a few of those years there. One of those years this ball was fundamentally broken, but I do agree. Now DCA is gone. Tom Travovici again, at time of, it's Monday night, so we don't know what I assume he's going to be playing foolback, right? But I'll be shocked if he's not foolback. Okay, I would too. So that's good at least. I think that you've just got to stick with it and hope he doesn't get hurt. I think there's no point taking him out of the firing line and having an opposition not to impact the game. But I think that's the, that's that you touched on the biggest problem there. It's not just that chairman's gone. It's just sort of this toughest and this steel that this forward pack has had at times in the past few years is gone. Like to me, it's just one of the weakest forward packs in the league right now. Like Ola Kwaatu is awesome. Of course he is. Persec is great. Like they're both great, but then the drop-off from those two is pretty stale. Ethan Bullymore thought it was one of Manly's better players last year. He's got some great legs, but it's some really good, really good games down the search. And the signing of Kobe Hathor, they basically need Kobe Hathorink to be like. The version of Kobe Hathorink to the Broncos fans spent years hoping Kobe Hathorink could be. And if they get back to that, well, the, the, the, the grandfather about that. What you're talking about there, right? So Ola Kwaatu was a, there's a fair didn't can blue chip and no dramas, no worries. Perseca is coming off the Achilles injury. That is a, a big injury for any player, particularly for a big fella, you know what I mean? I think about, I know they're bigger even than he is, but you think about power forwards and centers in the NBA coming off Achilles injuries sometimes, sometimes they're never the same, you know? And I'm not saying he will be, or he won't be, I'm saying he's a really big dude who probably doesn't have a step to lose because of his size, you know, if he gets any slower, it becomes lumbering very quickly, who's coming off a very serious injury. So that's hard to rely on. Ethan Bullamore is a nice bench rotation player, but if you're talking him about him as your third best forward, you're in big trouble. And then outside of that, what there's, there's Tauke Aher who exceeded my expectations last year, but that's because of the expectations I had were quite low. There's Nathan Brown who's good for, at this point is like a 15 minute a week man, and it's a good 15 minutes, but that's kind of all he's got. Coby Harrington was a good 15 minute man for the Broncos down the stretch last year, but they're looking for Heatherington. How many minutes in a game? Just try to do the maths. How many 15 minute men do we need? And Jake Duboyovich has run for 100 meters in a game once in the last two years. So, there's just not a whole lot outside of Ola Kuala to really get excited about there, you know? And then the sort of the the twin points that manly have revolved around the like the twin sons on the desert planet, planet Tatooine, I've been Treboiovich and Cherry Evans. We'll talk about Cherry Evans' replacement in a minute, but I just want to get some numbers up for Tom Turbo for a second. I think Joe's right, and it's pretty clear that he is now a diminished version of what he was, and he can still be effective certainly. But on the numbers from last year, if you go seasons where Treboiovich has played more than 15 games in a season, right? So years where he's played a good chunk of footy and hasn't just had his shoulder or his knees explode out the five or six games. Last year, it was career lows in Trias, meters per game, line breaks and especially tackle bus. He had less than half of the tackle bus that he had in 2021 in the same number of games. Now, the sport was broken in 2021 and we all understand that, but like that to me just show illustrates everything Joe was talking about. You know, Treboiovich is not as good at winning contact as he used to be. He's still an effective passer of the ball, but passing was always a secondary thing for his running. In the first 17 rounds last year, he had one line break. That's not very many. You know what I'm saying? Especially when, like this manly team for the past four or five years has been built around human like two or three other top guys. If he's not one of those top guys anymore, all of a sudden the roster loses balance and tips the fuck over. Right? Those last few games when he finally did let get as a nilious season with the footy under his belt, I would be hanging onto those for hope. And I still think, Treboiovich can be a very effective fullback, but I think the days of counting him as one of the elite fullbacks alongside the likes of Walsh and Tedesco, I think they're over. I think the injuries have accumulated too much to the point where he's just not the same guy physically that he once was. I completely agree with you. Obviously because we share a lot of those thoughts, but I do still think that manly's game is like whether Treboi's alive or not, like it's still going to revolve around him. They haven't worked out a strategy to win games without him, so he's still going to be the fullback. I mean, that might change. There's been chatter around the offseason about him moving to center and Lehigh moving to the fullback and blah, blah, blah. I can't see them starting with that. Maybe it happens at some point throughout the year. Maybe Terva gets injured and it's kind of forced upon them, but as it stands going into round one with a, as healthy as he is Tom Treboiovich, I'm confidently saying that the bulk of manly's attack is going to revolve around what he does and that is concerning in itself. I actually think like Lehigh regressed quite a bit last year as well. I thought he'd stayed recently. He was quite exciting and his follow-up, he had some moments last year that were pretty cool. The game against the Broncos where he did like he ran through pain hearts and like, I didn't know, he had that game. You look like you weigh 74 kilos, but he ran through the strongest man in Australia. Why did you do that game was the night of your 40th? It was. I remember that. Yeah, that's the thing. It came late in the evening. So I don't know, I can't remember that actually happened, but the important thing is you believe it happened. I remember the heavy victory that the boys got from me on my birthday. No, despite all of this and yes, there's probably a level of copium here, but I do still think that as lopsided as it is as a roster, I still think manly has enough talent individually to avoid the true bottom two or two bottom three teams. Just with cooler, more lately, higher, whatever is left of Turbo, those kind of guys. We're talking about Perseca. I mean, Where am I starting to run out of time with? with Persecut just from how many years he's lost in recent time with injuries. It kind of has to I've probably said the past three podcasts, three preview podcasts that I've done that this has to be the year that Persecut puts it together but I don't know this probably does but outside of the individual brilliance I am a little bit concerned about the ability to create points reliably and that will lead into discussion about our hearts which I'm sure we're going to talk about which and we can talk about the the trial which I'm sure Bunga that's pretty excited about It was a trial joke, can't be. Oh well, I mean that is I'm not super worried about the trial but there was one thing in the trial that did concern me greatly and it was the thing that got me very excited which was the data feeder ran over Jamal Foggydee. Well I think Mali signed for for it for his defense but he's kicking with a holy palt. Yeah it wasn't great. Yeah, we have a we have a fullback and a a late position fullback with Jai Gray who covers. I feel like I feel like after that trial both of you would have said calm down it's just a trial but in very different ways. Probably. Bunga's taking a cold shower to try and like well I was just excited that no one got a trick and then what happened? Brandon's got to be the next day because I'm not Joey's eyes closed deep breaths just to try. Let's just try to get it. Joe how much onus is on Jamal Foggydee to unleash Luke Brooks? Well I mean that's if Luke Brooks plays in the halves and maybe Luke Brooks is going to be the one unleashing everybody else but I have a hook off from the bench or from England. Hang on hang on hang on hang on hang on look there's no way hang on that may be your opinion of Luke Brooks but like that's the only thing he see about his opinion of Luke Brooks. None of that is how Luke Brooks. Luke Brooks gave an interview last week. Manly had their open squad. I had their full squad made Europe and Luke Brooks said that he might end up moving to hooker this year to accommodate on a tiny large and Joey while she was in the house. I'm going to try to play more minutes this year. No but that story did come up. One of the best questions anyone's ever been asked for a Brooksy. All right Foggydee Joe we've danced around that enough how you feeling about it man. I mean it was always going to be a downgrade right like he's not as good a heart back as DCA but well hang on. No the only thing he has on DCA is he's slightly younger but he's just still slow. The thing that the only thing that I rationalized you know the signing with was that a huge part of DCA's game especially with Manly and a slightly underwhelming four pack over the years he had the boot to get Manly out of trouble and I thought with Foggydee they were getting a guy who had a similarly like big boot fairly reliable kicking game and what I saw in the South Trial again it's only a trial. I didn't think his kicking game was very impressive. Short-kicking game was quite underwhelming. Missing the mark like kicks too deep kicks too shallow and that is the biggest concern like I don't I don't think Manly's going to look at him as a DCA replacement in the sense that he's going to have to you know take all responsibility and direct everything around the park which is pretty much what DCA's definitely done for the last three or four years so you don't have that but I mean you're not paying you're not paying you're paying half what you put you're paying daily chairman so you can't really expect that from him but yeah I was I was my eyes were opened a little bit on the on the kicking game which hopefully will improve. Talked a lot about Foggydee on the Raiders preview. I feel like he's in a really really difficult spot because he's coming from a team that was probably asking less of him than any other team Kinda would. I talked a lot about how Camper's style of play just stressed the halfback less and I don't know if that was intentional or if it's just the way that they sort of ended up they were like we can't we can't go signed a gun half-back so we've got to try and build around that position I don't know but the end result was it was a really good position for Foggydee. He ran he was the primary organizer out there but there's I never got the sense that it was a Cherry Evans type thing where he is running everything around the park where like you know he's taking the team by the neck and taking them right right where they want to go that's just not that's just kind of not how it happened and that was fine because at the Raiders he was relatively successful over that four-year period like it was rate of success where you know making the finals is a success but he was he was good at that I think I said only at a 60% win rate the four-year he was there which is really good I'll take that I'll take a 60% I know but he's going from the best possible situation for him and his skill set to maybe the worst I agree with you Joe I don't think that manly are expecting him to be the daily Cherry Evans replacement in the way he runs him around the park but that is what the outside perception will be you know Luke Brooks is the Teflon Don ever since leaving West he just doesn't copy I think it's quite telling that not once in between Cherry Evans leading in Foggedy signing did one person say or think what if we go Brooksy a run at half-back you know what I mean so it will be all on Foggedy and I think that they are asking him to do a job that he's just not equipped to do I don't think he can run an NRL team around the park in a in a dominant and controlled and organized sense over 24 rounds and expect a whole lot of success out of that I'm with you Joe I thought I thought that even if everything else falls apart he's kicking game could still be really strong that is his best asset and that is one of the things that he's honestly when he gets it right he's one of the best in the league at it and plenty of guys have you know been able to get through a season with just a kicking game or something like that but it didn't come through in the Charity Shield and when things get bad for Foggedy they can they can get quite bad and he can he can he can spiral a little bit maybe that was just a function of being with the Raiders who are a spiral team and maybe he can leave that behind I'm not sure but I just I just I really I really don't like the fit I want him to succeed I really do I really like them at the Raiders I understand why he took the the deal at Manly and I wish him nothing success but success I just don't think it's a great fit for him and I think if Manly crash and burn I think he will cop the blame I he'll be the he'll be the Mariah absolutely without doubt and yeah I think I said this on the camera people and we briefly talked about Foggedy not sure if you listened to it Joe why would you do oh you did oh thank you and basically like Foggedy was in like one of the best positions a player with his skills that could have been in in Canberra in the sense that it accentuated the things he's really good at and was able to mask the things he's not greater through just the sort of the will bear and the grit and the athleticism of some of the guys around him I don't think manly have those pieces around him in in in large quantities to to do the same thing I don't think that forward pack is his dynamic or is athletic as Canberra's I think with the exception of Colour I don't think that I don't trust their backline anywhere near as much and whilst Tom Tauoevich is certainly a more accomplished and a real player than Ethan Strange I'm not sure if at this point in his career he all Luke Brooks has the sort of powerful running game that can that can put teams into minds in the same way that Ethan Strange does at Canberra so all the things that Foggedy Ben and Tudor from last year I know longer there that doesn't mean it's going to be a failure it just means he's going to have to adapt his game at age 33 or whatever it is it would be strange to see a guy that was you know in and out of first grade on the goal goes it's sort of really had a career awakening at Canberra it would it would be quite something if a player with that career path at that age was able to just completely reinvent himself as a completely new sort of player I just I would struggle to say it happened you know what I would liken it to it like he's he's a man he's a college quarterback who's used to play in the run and shoot there you go and now he's transferred to another college you're on the center he can't do it that's the thing that's the thing now he's under now he's under center they're looking for him to be a traditional pocket passer and I just don't I just don't think my man's got it I just don't I'd love to be love to be wrong but yeah I'm I hope so I my last point on Foggedy which does kind of go back to the chicken game that the the one avenue for points that I think I like previously I'd have been confidently said that was a good option is it mainly does have two wingers who are pretty good under the high bombing subs terrible under the high ball if you're kicking it to him as a defender but he's a he's a he's a tall unit so like he's a in theory he's a good target on the week yeah palms and I'm sorry but I'm the one yeah Lee Hyde's really good in that kind of regard as well obviously Tom's a big unit good under the high ball so in theory if he does get the kicking game rolling then mainly could have a little bit of joy there off kicks which is maybe the the most most repeatable kind of attack that they can have but they're going to get in attacking what I'm told I'll call it six against what if what if tolly college scores 70 major solo tries every week but that worked I'll be I'll be thrilled if that happens because he's resigned for five years so I won't be oh oh this brings me to one point that I was going to I wanted to make which is like aside from the fact that the team is almost certainly going to be shit everything that manly is darned over like the entire summer I actually think has been really good like Tony Metro of moving on kind of cut one of the limbs of the Isaac Moses tentacles off. And he knew the club Joe. But the new. Not a lot of Jason King does. He knows the club. Now he knows the club. Oh, sorry, Joe, go on. Couple of. No, no, Jason King definitely knows the club. And people know that he played for me and I'm not sure anybody really knew the Tony. So people know that he knows the club. That's important because a lot of that's the only best shot in the club. They know Jason King knows the club. And you know who everybody who else everybody knows knows the club. Karen for who they brought back, which you know, I have no real understanding of like whether Karen for is going to be an amazing coach or like is technically gifted on that front. But like that dude loves manly and glad for manly and like every single person who sits on the hill of Brookie looks at Karen for and goes, I fucking love that guy. I so getting him back into the fold is just undeniable. Good like that. That's good. And then he's going, it's how many injuries are we away from? Oh, you see who's going for what you got. You're on the word. Why do we need an injury? You're saying round eight, Foggedy dropped four and in. Well, he's just dropped. Yeah, but they've got a drop loop Brooks. Are they near? Come on. No, he's playing hooker. Um, like those things and the fight and the five eighth cliff lines. He's back. He's off the darts like he's got 25 minutes in those legs. You know, but you put all those things together plus like they didn't get into a bidding war for Garrick. Um, like they did the obvious thing which was like Lockham Croaker had to retire. These sort of things, I feel like after five years of or certainly three years of pulling that ROM rain on literally every single decision. I feel like all these things were their big or relatively small. I think they've pulled the right reign, which gives me hope that even though this year isn't going to be, you know, a success on the field. I don't think I'm at if it is miracle days, but it gives me hope that, um, you know, they are heading in the right direction. I feel like this is almost certainly seen as last year. And if that happens, then green shoots will be on the horizon. Speaking of Jason King and Manley Joe, I was, I was just seeing what stories were around before we jumped on to preview the show. And I do love that in the in the tele-telegram. There's essentially just an article that is advertising Manley memberships, which is fantastic for Manley where the headline is if you're, if you're, if it could be members only for home games. And then it goes into say that, uh, Manley often sells out and the only way to guarantee your cease is to be a member. It's like, this is an email that gets sent to like, man, why is this a story that's going to be in the news paper tomorrow? But hey, Jason King, he knows how to get people to that club is, is the point, I guess. The most, I actually, he knows where the club is as part of knowing the club. This one's surprising, but I know I have read that story. Um, yeah. I do work there. So the most surprising, the most surprising part of that story was that I think you said Manley has 20,000 members, which is obviously more than the capacity of Brookfellow, but I don't, I'm a little bit surprised by the number of 20,000 members. I will say every team's membership has been massively inflated by several things. So the most, I think that the KO thing being one of them, if people have missed this, you can get a digital membership for your club now and it's cheaper than paying for KO and it includes KO in it. So like, I know people who aren't fans of a club who've become club members to save my life. Unless you're a ticketed member, I don't think you're going to need a member's only, uh, past to Janet and Brookie. Probably not. Uh, Joey, what you were sort of alluding to before is something that I agree with that this is a team that is very clearly in transition. Not sure how many people in this team know that it is a team that is, that is, that is a, that is approaching a transition. But for that transition to be completed, some of those green shoots do have to come to the four who are some, who are some young fellas at Manley that you're excited about saying? Well, there's four who we actually saw in the trials this year. So it's, it's the first time in a few years, other than Lehigh Hopper Light out. I can't really think of too many guys who've come in and had like a tangible impact. Caleb Navale looked like he could do it and obviously he is out for the year with an ACL injury, which is really quite despotic because I had aspirations for him to be starting at lock at some point in the year. Maybe that's going to be Kobe Hetherington now. By the by. But there were four guys who played in the trials. Luke Walsh is a guy here, you've already heard, Luke Walsh, Joey Walsh is a guy that you've already heard of, heard plenty about. And I probably don't need to explain anymore. He played last year. I think he's going to end up being Manley six certainly before, you know, more age and time. And he's a guy who, if he's as good as people think he is, I'm not quite as convinced yet for based on what I've seen. He obviously has an enormous amount of talent. He's got a left boot and a lot of very impressive impressed admirers. He's a guy who can come in and make a difference this year. On Tony Lodge, I would say he's probably too young. He's currently playing SG Ball, which I guess would tell you just how far off first grade he probably is. But towards the back end of the year, I really wouldn't be surprised if certainly he's getting a spot in, you know, 18 on 19 Jersey and getting a chance to either play in the tennis or maybe it's six. I don't know. It's not like everything's on the table for Manley this year because I don't think they're going to be able to point to results and say, no, we can't blood young guys. The two guys who people may not have heard quite as much about is a big unit who I thought did incredibly well against the very seas and worries pack. Phillip Ollin, the name of Simi Lafay, who I mentioned last year. I think he was very, very close to getting some first grade into him at the end of last year. I think it would have been wise if Manley did do so because he's one of the few really red-blooded young forwards that Manley's had on the books for quite some time. He was really good against the Warriors Pack. Ran with Anger, which again is something that outside of Nathan Brown. Manley doesn't really have a great deal of. I think he should be playing off the bench from round one, but I suspect that will be a bridge too far for Seabes, although he did play a decent stint in the trolling at South, which maybe tells you it's pretty close. He'll definitely, he's 100% going to be playing a size of a roll off the bench at some point this year. The last guy who I want to mention is Hugo Hart, who's 18 or I think he's 19-year-old back rower, who is giving me serious kind of Steve Manley's world abs. He's a big, big, raw-boned figure who Manley has, I think, given him two contracts extensions in the past 12 months, they gave him another two-year extension last year. There's a great highlight that you can find if you're looking up on YouTube where he just picks up a loose ball, runs 70 metres, showing off a bit of pace, and then the Caledifense comes across India's palms. Some poor fella into the shadow realm and scores a try. It's like, this guy's got instant athleticism. He played both the Warriors Trial and the South Trial. He started the South Trial because there was no Ben Treboi, which I think, which kind of tells me maybe he's like literally one injury. There's not a huge amount of depth. Obviously, Oliver White's here was playing as well, but there's not a huge amount of depth on those edges for Manley. It kind of tells me he's really close to nailing down maybe a bench spot or if two or three injuries come along, he could be one of Manley's starting edge back rowers. I don't think he's ready, but he does look very promising and I think he's got a big future. I do think you'll see a bit of this year. If he plays a lot of first grade, then may it sound some bad. Lodge has an enormous reputation. I've not seen him play, but all the wraps are very, very good. Welsh was a bit the same, but I had seen much of him play. I thought, in that Warriors Trial, what I saw are Welsh. I'm pretty convinced he's got the good stuff. I'm really keen to see him get around as soon as possible. Hart was someone who I hadn't heard of until that Warriors Trial where he gets a double as well. I looked into his background a little bit. I got a good tip from someone. His family lived in America for a couple of years when he was growing up and he played high school football over there as a safety and a linebacker, ended up playing against Mick Millen from the Panthers who's just got an offensive rookie of the year and Mason Graham from Cleveland who was a top five pick in the draft. They come back to Australia. He went to school up in Brizzy and one of the rugby schools up there. Last year was his first year playing rugby league ever and he played SG Ball, Jersey Flague and then the back half of the year in New South Wales Cup. I agree with you Joe. He's fleet of foot and just seems to be one of those guys who's always around the ball. You know, you could kind of see in that Warriors Trial where he scored a double. I think both of them end up a little tapdowns off kicks. He's just always down. there and thereabouts and things seem to happen around him. Write a story about him detailing, well this shit I just said which I probably should have obscured a little bit more but the story is out there if you want to go have a look at it. I think he's a real likely customer and I agree that he will play first grade this year. If it's really early in the year then it's probably big fucking dramas for Manly but I agree that getting the run in the trial sort of says to me that he's not far off at all and I think in the long run he'll end up being quite a good first grade. I'm quite high on him. Put it this way he's probably already jumped Corey Waddell in my Manly Edge power ranking so. Wow. No, the Waddell was tough for us. We're fading in. We're seeding ground all over the country. It's not looking like that. One last player and there's a very obvious connection. It's on Attorney Larger's brother Ashton. There is zero chance of him playing first grade this year because he's only 17. He's literally a child but he's a hooker. And Manly hasn't really had a dominant or exciting hooking prospect since somebody stabbed to somebody else in it. Church. Card Rock. But he's 17 year old hooker. He's playing SG Ball with his brother at the moment. Every game that they play together is just stacked with highlights of the two of them combining. He, I think Manly is actually more excited about Ashton than they are about Anatooni. Ah, that's the classic trope. The John for Laos. He's going to be even better than he thought they're so good. I don't know if they've got a 12 year old brother who's even better. Yeah. Anatooni hasn't done anything in first grade or even reserve grade yet. That's true actually. You can't really say like he's going to be better than he goes. Yeah, but like casual fans have heard of Anatooni life. I think he's my point. Yeah. I hope they have my great viewer, say Joe. No, no. Ashton's the guy. Ashton's the guy that everyone is putting his flag in the sand on Ashton. Anatooni, you're old news. He's an Anatooni large watch stuff. Yeah, that's what I'm just asking many people are saying this. All right. I've got him 16th for all the reasons we outlined. I think it would be rough going. If Tom stays fully fit for a whole year, then maybe they can make the eight. That's a big hit at this point. And even if he does, it's not a guarantee where it's in previous years, I would have said like if you get 24 games or 22 games, that's on to work. It's like pencil and then the eight. And I'm not doing that this year. So, class, I just don't think anything's going to work. Yeah. Sorry, Joe. I've got them stone motherless. I've got them last.
