Speaker 1Hey, this is Amy, and this is Lindsey, and this is Girl Talk Live. We are so pumped that you're here with us as we unpack how being a girl and being a mom is the best when you're walking and talking with Jesus every day and seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness. So grab your Bible and let's get started.
Speaker 2Welcome to Girl Talk. Happy Fall. There's pumpkins. Pumpkins, squirrels, all the acorns. It's officially October now, and stock up. I'm sure Publix is putting all their pumpkin stuff.
Speaker 3Yeah, they had so much this morning. Like so many. All the candies out and all the apple cider.
Speaker 2Sugar cookies with the pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies with the orange sprinkles on them. Yeah, all of this. Uh-huh. And. Cans of pumpkin puree for homemade pumpkin bread. Yeah. That's got to get on the list to make.
Speaker 3There's some down there.
Speaker 2I think that was from last year. We probably need to throw it away.
Speaker 3It's fine. Canned goods last a long time. That's why we give them to the food drive.
Speaker 2Oh, those imperishable goods? Yeah. I'm sure it's still good. Okay. Well, I'm not sure. We'll see. Okay.
Speaker 3Yeah. So you should comment below on your favorite fall treat. Wait, we did that last week, didn't we? Uh-huh. Oh, sorry.
Speaker 2That's okay. If you didn't comment, you can still comment below on your favorite fall treat and give us some new ideas.
Speaker 3Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, we're in prayer.
Speaker 2We're in prayer. Not currently. At the moment.
Speaker 3Actually, we are because last week we talked about how we're supposed to pray continually.
Speaker 2Oh, yeah. Continuously.
Speaker 3Mm-hmm. Sorry. Did I say the wrong word? That's okay, Maddie. Me and Abby are the same person. Me and Abby are the same person for sure. I'm just bigger than her.
Speaker 2But it's okay. All right. So, we, just for a little recap, we have talked about the, we talked about what is prayer.
Speaker 3Oh, yeah. So, you have to have my notes
Speaker 2because I don't remember anything.
Speaker 3Yeah. And then I just lose all the notes because I remember them and then we need them again. Do you still have your notes?
Speaker 2Yeah. You probably have a notebook that you are keeping everything nicely organized.
Speaker 3It is, um, we did the intro. What is prayer? The intro? In the intro video, you can go back and we have this paper that we are currently missing. We have all of that in the first video of all the things that we're going to talk about this semester and it's all really great. So, really, you should just go watch that video.
Speaker 2Sounds good to me. No, don't press stop. Okay. And then we went into what is prayer. Mm-hmm. And then.
Speaker 3There's five things.
Speaker 2Yes. Of what is prayer. Yeah. Prayer is.
Speaker 3Relationship. Trophy stand. Conversation. I'm not going. In order. I don't know. Relationship. Conversation. Weapon. Um, tool. Trophy stand. I was trying to see how many I had done.
Speaker 2Good job. Okay. And so, then. And. We talked about. Prayer is worship. Prayer is worship because we are constantly, as we are continuously praying, we are constantly worshiping God that he is able to answer our prayers and do even more than we can ever imagine.
Speaker 3Which goes into the purpose of
Speaker 2prayer, the purpose of prayer, which is to grow our relationship
Speaker 3with Christ, grow ourselves in Christ and grow others for Christ.
Speaker 2She's so good. Okay. Which brings us to this week at the top of your paper, put the power of prayer, power. We said, gee, yeah, we should make like on the screen, the power of prayer out.
Speaker 3I'm going to fire works, but I don't want to use fire anymore.
Speaker 2Yeah. Y'all. Holy spirit is so amazing because we sat down and we said, okay, power of prayer. What is the power of prayer? And so for you, if y'all had to stop right now and say, and answer that question, what would you say is the power of prayer? What would you say is the power of prayer? Me? Sure. The reason I was asking is because when I asked myself that question, nothing came to my mind, the power of prayer, because I was like, well, we've already talked about that. It's the purpose of prayer, which probably is what you're about to talk about because you texted me that and I was like, oh, that's good. And I couldn't follow the thought.
Speaker 3So yeah, you told me that was probably right, but that you couldn't think about it.
Speaker 2I did. I was like, hold on. Let's talk about that later because I'm somewhere else right now.
Speaker 3Yeah. So I think the power of prayer results from the purpose of prayer. So really not a lot of our videos, they do build on each other, but they're really able to stand on their own. Also, but I think definitely coming out of the purpose of prayer, you really get to see the power of prayer when you understand the purpose of prayer, because you don't really like we talked about last week. We don't do anything that doesn't actually have a purpose. And so I think the power of prayer comes out of when we really. Understand the purpose of prayer, and then we see the fruit and the results and like what happens to us in the power of prayer because of purpose. So I think, you know, the power of prayer is what changes us to be more like Christ. Right. Which is also the purpose.
Speaker 2Right. And we said that the purpose is to grow our relationship with Jesus, to make ourselves look more like Jesus, and then also to serve others and love others so that they feel safe to grow. Like Jesus and then which in turn grows God's kingdom.
Speaker 3Yeah, it's almost like the power of prayer is why we can trust the purpose of prayer.
Speaker 2So it's all a circle, which brings us brings me back to why I said Holy Spirit is so good because we sat down and I was like, uh, I don't know. And then literally all open my Bible, I turned a couple of pages and I looked down, I don't even know, I wasn't even really looking for anything. I just. Turned to a couple of pages and I saw power of God and I started reading. I was like, I said, this is it. This is the power of prayer. So in your notes, right? Power of prayer equals power of God. Okay. And that is, um, I'll give you the first first Corinthians one, eight. Eighteen. And y'all, I'm just going to go on down to 25 because it really, we're going to take it slowly. I'm going to read it slowly and we're going to talk about it, but it's really all of it. Um, all right, starting at verse 18, it says for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God, for it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, the intelligence of the intelligent. I would frustrate. Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know him. God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, which is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. That's all the way down. And so basically what that's saying is God and his wisdom are the same thing. God and his wisdom are the same thing. God and his word is the power because, you know, Jesus in the beginning was the word. So that is the power of prayer, which we have talked about, um, praying scripture and we pray scripture and we learn scripture and we become like Jesus because that's where the power is, um, overcoming evil with good, which is what Jesus did.
Speaker 3So really the power of prayer is what gives us the insight and wisdom of God. And it's, I mean, basically, again, going back to purpose, like we, we can only know him if we spend time with him and give him the opportunity to speak into our lives, which is how it is for all people, like all the people in our lives. Like we can't have a relationship unless we have the openness of knowing them and letting them speak into our lives, which is where the power of the relationship comes from. And that's really to be the mirror of our relationship with God and the power that we have.
Speaker 2Right. Because, you know, the, the power that other people have in their lives, whether it's your friends or your parents.
Speaker 3I think the power of prayer is also our weapon because we, there are multiple, like Satan can have just as much power in our life as God does. And if we allow him to, he can have more and it's not because he has more power. than God but it's the power that we allow into our lives and I think when we allow prayer to be our weapon and worship to be our weapon and what we talked about with like what prayer is like it is a tool and it is a weapon and the power of prayer like as when it's used as our weapon can keep the power of the enemy out because like he does have power but he only the enemy only has the power that we give him because he has no power on his own mm-hmm and I think the power of prayer is what keeps that down
Speaker 2right when you focus more on your relationship with Jesus and the truth of God's Word and and use that as your anchor and as a weapon you know then that is what fights that battle for you you know Isaiah says at perfect peace will he keep on him whose mind has stayed on the Lord you're thinking about Jesus you're at peace because you're remembering who he is and you're remembering the victory you're not thinking about your circumstances or or the future or anything yeah I watched a movie the other night that had a scene in it where it was a Christian movie and it had Jesus standing on the water asking the main character to step out of the boat and come walk with him and of course the person was like I can't I can't I can't I can't you know and he said well you're you're picturing doing it without me but when you remember that I'm with you then you can do it and of course in the movie you know he did it but I mean it's the same with us where are we gonna put our focus and when we pray continuously we are constantly focused on his nearness and then we have the victory and that is the power of continual prayer is to give us victory in all
Speaker 3things miles was talking about ACC a couple weeks ago he talked about how so many of us are at a disadvantage in our faith because we haven't even stepped out to give him the possibility to be faithfulness be faithful because we haven't yeah we haven't given him the opportunity to be like if he doesn't show up we're not gonna make it and that's what being a Christian is that's what Jesus is saying when he's telling Paul to step on Peter Peter to step out on the water like that's what he's he's calling all of us to do that and on so many of us have a crutch or something to fall back in and on and we don't allow him to show us that he's faithful and then that's why we don't trust him in the very end of things because we always have something to fall back on because that's the American
Speaker 2culture right and and honestly if you think about it it's because we want to have control over everything because we're so fearful you know we're afraid that if we don't do this this will happen and in these days you can find you can find a method to achieve anything there are so many self-help books cooking saving you know finances for middle schoolers there's everything to set us up for success in this world yeah and that's good and I'm not saying that we shouldn't do our best to plan for a good outcome but I think our point is the earlier you start prioritizing your relationship with Jesus and in in seeking him in his ways you're going to naturally do the things that cause other things to fall into place and then also look you might find yourself in a situation where you need that miracle for the Red Sea to be parted but then you might not but if you are in the situation where you find yourself having to or needing a Red Sea to be parted you're not going to be upset about it you're going to know how to cross through the sea and you're going to know that it's going to be okay so that's why developing the discipline of prayer every day every morning whenever whenever you can hopefully in the morning to really start your day and remember whose you are and who holds your day in their hands in his hands you know that's that's the best time to start it and then of course throughout the day so power of prayer that we've talked about is really an exchange we said we when we come into prayer and we come into prayer and we come bringing all our circumstances and our fears and our needs and everything that we bring into the presence of God if we leave feeling the same way as we did when we came in then something wasn't done right because what prayer and the relationship with God is is the exchange of our reality for his presence and his promises and so when you say okay I've got all this going on but I know that you are this and your word says this so I can leave these here and I can I can just give it all to you and I can walk away you know refreshed renewed rejuvenated restored reawakened and revitalized and excited because I know that you know he's got it and and it's gonna be okay because his promise his word says this so which leads me to another quote that I found y'all this is my Beth Moore book it's number two next to my Bible they're both falling apart and it's because
Speaker 3The Bible that's falling apart belongs to the one who isn't.
Speaker 2well it's only falling apart because I have gone through many years or I was falling apart and I wanted to cling to the one who never changes and it's always faithful and strong in my fortress but I love this Beth Moore book because she and her friends that helped her write this book took the time to put all of these scriptures into topics and so that's why I love this but she also added some different quotes from other great Giants in the faith and one of those is Charles Spurgeon and if you have ever if you know who that is you'll know that he was he was strong he was powerful he was I don't know what's the right word for someone who has been a forerunner or I don't know he's really really good I've tried to read some of his stuff and his vocabulary I mean I get stuck I'm like man I need a weekend and a big giant dictionary to really track with this because we're so used to like scrolling and having 15 second headlines to look at but he is he's gotten good stuff and he is deep so in her and Beth Moore's book overcoming unbelief she has this quote by Charles Spurgeon from his book prayer his book on prayer and spiritual warfare he says do you see that the Lord's promises have many fulfillments they are waiting now to pour their treasures into the lap of those who pray God is willing to repeat the biographies of his saints in us he is waiting to be gracious and to load us with his benefits does this not lift prayer up to a higher level and I love how it says that he's willing to repeat the biographies of his saints in us because his saints were just as pitiful as we are they just responded which is what we I guess I said that because just in 2021 there there seemed to be so many more distractions maybe I'm making that up but you think about life in a world where there weren't as many conveniences so things took longer there were also not as many distractions so a people were able to spend time honing a skill or a craft or you know I mean you just who actually chisels things out of wood anymore I mean if you find some real authentic hand carved piece of anything it's expensive because nobody does that anymore and and good things have been replaced with lower quality things that are faster to reproduce so that everything can be done faster and we can have more which is not necessarily a good thing so we have to fight and choose to spend time on things that are the best thing which is prayer in our relationship with Christ which is why I said that so we talked about how God how Spurgeon said that God wants to repeat the in the bible in our lives um and so how how does that happen and we'll talk more about this next week when we talk about how to pray but um i love i love this verse and her commentary on it it's just another quote that she threw into her book which is really just a bunch of scripture with her thoughts in random places but um we talked about i mean we're talking about god repeating the biographies of his saints through our lives and so we have his word and the examples of the saints and so again it all comes back to being in the word and hearing from god and letting the power of his word which is his spirit in us change us to make us who he created us to be and so i love where it says um she says in second corinthians 4 13 it says it is written i believe therefore i have spoken so with that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak and she says if you are in christ you have been given that same spirit of faith the original word for spirit is literally translated to the word of god and it is written in the word of god translated breath so when you speak god's word out loud with confidence in him rather than your own ability to believe you are breathing faith believing and speaking the truth of god's word is like receiving blessed cpr from holy spirit and i love that because once again it's nothing to do with us and everything to do with god it is everything to do with jesus and holy spirit like all we have to bring to the situation is number one we show up and then we bring our sin and we exchange it for his righteousness and his truth to change us to make us more like him and um so that we can love others and they can be more like him which again is our purpose we were created to know him and to make him known and and it's just it all we have to do is open the bible and ask him to speak to us and then when he's speaks to us and then we say okay i'm sorry you were so right i'm so wrong you know that's the full surrender and that um is where our joy comes in the more we
Speaker 3say things the more we believe them which is why it's so important to say things about yourself that are but not bad or other people or anything like that and so the power of our words are so important yeah and so that's really where the power of prayer the power of prayer is like prayer does have power because we have so much power in our words and um and so i think it just goes you know like kind of hand in hand whether you if you just keep praying and keep saying things even if you don't actually believe them yet and you continue to pray that like help my unbelief with it then eventually like your which is what we were saying in the beginning like the power of prayer is that it changes us and it changes our views and our thoughts and our perspective and like the power of our word and the power of the word and the power of the word and the power of the word and the power of the word and saying just like help my unbelief i'm saying this i don't really believe it but i know you said it so i believe you and trust you and just all of that and in the moments where you feel like you have no clue what's going on or what tomorrow will look like like it's just it's all of that and where the power is of just knowing that like it
Speaker 2matters that matters because at the end of the day he knows us he made us and he knows where we struggle and all he wants is us to show up and walk with him and let him love us because you mean you know god is three he's god the father god the son god holy spirit and in the beginning he said let us make man in our image and so he is also a god of relationship and so he he wants to be loved back by us he doesn't need anything from us but i mean if you think about we're made in his image and we want to be loved it just makes sense that he would want to be loved also and so he's going to do the rest you know all we have to do is show up and and if he gives us desires then we you know like the big dreams i always say dream big you know don't think that just because you're a christian you're not allowed to have anything just because you're a christian you're not allowed to have anything just because do anything whatever no i mean as christians we were made to have um influence i'm not saying that you chase that with everything in you i'm saying pray about it you know keep him first but say you know i want to do these things for a blessing to other if if that is your motive i mean he knows the motives of your heart if you want to have influence because you want a stage and you want people to just think you're great that's you know he's not going to give you that yeah
Speaker 3i saw something today that said well done my good and and then had all these words and it was like successful influence like influential like well off like just all these things that we like think matter and all of it was crossed out and it just said faithful faithful because that's really what he calls us to and it's really all we're meant for is to just be faithful because
Speaker 2he's faithful yes he is just calling us to be faithful no matter what's going on in our lives because he is always faithful he says never will i leave you and never will i forsake you and nothing can separate us from his love so which leads me to the last part the best part um okay turn to john 15 9 through 11 the best part of walking with jesus again we still haven't listened to that recording at the beginning again where it's at the beginning of the podcast we made it that one time and then i haven't listened to it again but it says where being a mom and being a girl is the best when you're walking with holy and talking walking and talking with holy spirit and jesus and seeking his righteousness so seeking his righteousness i heard this weekend righteousness is being right with god and right living i love that which brings me to this verse john 15 is jesus saying um 9 through 11 as the father has loved me so i have loved you now remain in my love if you obey my commands you will remain in my love just as i have obeyed my father's commands and remain in his love i tell you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete so that's well where we find our happiness yay that is the abundant life that jesus came to give us and that is the power of prayer just knowing him walking with him surrendering all to him seeking his right with god so the next step is right living hearing his word obeying his commands and y'all believe me i'm the first one to say i don't want to so many times i don't feel like obeying whatever i know i'm supposed to obey and that's okay it's not okay to stay there it's okay to go back to your closet or wherever and say i don't want to holy spirit please take my don't want to and give me your want to because that's what i want to do and that's what i want to do and that's what i want to do and that is part of the surrender process is when you recognize and this is what we've talked about before when you recognize your own flesh and then you go back and you worship god because and you worship jesus because he did the hard things for us and he's already done it all and he's given his holy spirit so that we can do hard things too and we exchange our don't want to for his want to because and that's what the holy spirit does he's our comforter and our helper so that when we don't want to he's you just say what that's um oh it's the 12 9 is that my grace he says i never can remember this address second corinthians 12 9 he says my grace is sufficient for you so you say here's my don't want to can i please have more of your grace so that i can go do this and glorify jesus and that is where our joy is complete when we obey him then our joy is complete good job so i hope that makes sense i hope y'all are able to track with everything
Speaker 3definitely the power of prayer is the showing up showing up faithful giving it to him and letting him be it and if
Speaker 2you use a um because i know everybody's going to say well how do i pray well we're going to talk about that next week we're
Speaker 3going to start like a whole like live weeks and weeks the rest of this semester will be about all the different ways we can pray
Speaker 2oh those are my favorite things those are my favorite things because i am so bad at going through books and praying things like i everybody's like well what about this bible study and what about this bible study and yes those are good like if you're in a small group and y'all meet like y'all are doing now with girl talk you know if they're along you know in other areas of your lives and so many bible studies have been published those are good because you grow in knowledge and understanding and all those things where you know you you um dive deeper into the word but there is just something there's also something special about just sitting down with your bible and just opening it up and just seeing where holy spirit leads you and and there are times for that and there's also times for a good bible study curriculum so both are good um you know yeah
Speaker 3we're gonna give you both yeah so we'll talk through that um starting next week and it'll be really good so yeah so thank you for joining us eat some
Speaker 2pumpkin pie that's right um it's starting to cool down so that's good we made soup last night that was yummy um starting to get more of the soup recipes and the crock pot recipes and the pumpkin recipes and um you know we get to do those things for two months so that's good yeah because we we don't do christmas until and don't throw anything at me because i know so many people not you so many people don't do or they start christmas right after halloween yeah i mean it's starting to it's starting to get crazy so but we've got two whole months of all the fall festivities pumpkins pilgrims acorns plaids yeah super fun the whole season so enjoy your fall enjoy the football and enjoy fall football and what's another one um frogs frogs no all right bye
